Wanted Man ~ Chapter Twelve

Summary: A price on his head, Loki of Asgard finds himself stranded on Earth and in need of one woman's help in order to free himself from the bounty and try to reclaim what he sees as his rightful throne in Asgard.

McKenna Carlin just wanted to put a horrible day behind her. She had no idea that things would get worse before they get better…

McKenna always thought the idea of strolling along the beach at sunset holding hands with someone was probably one of the corniest things one could do at the Jersey shore. And yet, there she was, her fingers linked with Loki's and the surf washing over her bare feet while her flipflops dangled from her free hand. 

Loki gazed down at her. “What’s on your mind? You’ve become very quiet.”

“I’m tired, to be honest. It’s been a crazy week.”

His thumb caressed the flat of her hand. “I’m sure it has for you.”

She stopped and turned toward the water with a sigh. The ocean was calm, the whitecaps no bigger than normal and the tide was going out. In the distance, she could see several boats, and there were still a few holdouts refusing to cede the day to night.

Loki draped an arm about her shoulders and pulled her back against his chest. “Where are you? You seem miles from here.”

“I’m just waiting for Coulson to jump out of the surf and blast you with his ray gun again.”

His laugh rumbled softly against her ear. “I don’t think we need worry about that.”

But they did need to worry. It wouldn’t take much for Coulson and his cohorts to figure out the mystery of Loki's disappearance. And although they were several miles from Point Pleasant, it also wouldn’t take long—in theory—to track them to the Winchester. Loki was a wanted man—er, god—S.H.I.E.L.D. was most likely making him their top priority. And the barrier islands weren’t exactly big, either.

“We should probably leave the shore. Or at least go somewhere else, maybe a little more south.”

“McKenna, you’ve nothing to worry about.”

“How can you say that?” She turned to face him. The setting sun streaked the sky with coral and gold-tinged pink, seagulls sailed on the gentle wind blowing in from the water, and she shivered as the air cooled a little each minute. “S.H.I.E.L.D. knows you’re back. They don’t know you aren’t planning on taking over the world again—” She narrowed her eyes at him. “You aren’t, right?”

He smiled, catching her face in his hands. “No, I’m not. Not yet, anyway.”

“Loki.”

“No. I have no designs on Midgard again. I learned the hard way. My back may never be the same again.”

“I could walk on it for you.”

His thumbs brushed lightly over her cheeks. “You could what?”

“Sometimes it helps. I used to walk on Joe’s back now and then.”

“I appreciate the offer, but something tells me I wouldn’t even be able to feel you there, any more than I felt your cat lying on me.”

“Cinder. God, I hope he’s all right.”

“Didn’t your friend say she had him?”

McKenna nodded. “Yeah, but Tony isn’t fond of cats.” Those gentle sweeps of his fingers on her cheeks brought about a drowsiness that made her want to just melt into him and rest her head on his chest again. 

She gave into the impulse and he responded by wrapping his arms about her. “What happens now?” she asked.

“Now? Now we go back above and see if the hot water has returned.”

She laughed. “I think we should probably wait until the morning for that.”

“Very well. Morning it is.”

Her head still against him, she shifted to look up. “You need to go back, don’t you? To face the Chitauri, I mean. You can’t keep running from them forever.”

He sighed softly, and her heart sank as he nodded. “I do. I don’t really wish to, but you’re right. I can’t keep running. And I don’t want to keep running.”

“When?”

“Not before morning.” He held her gaze and brushed her jaw with one hand. “And I will be back.”

“Maybe not.”

He bent toward her and covered her lips with his in a gentle kiss that quickly deepened. McKenna tightened her arms about him, as if to hold him, to hold them, in that moment for as long as she could. To hold time still, if only it were possible. Hot tears stung behind her eyes at the thought of the day coming when Loki was only a memory. She didn’t want to lose him. And she knew—she just knew—that if he left, he wouldn’t be back.

He pulled away to press his forehead to hers and whispered, “I will be back, love.”

She squeezed her eyes shut, turning her face against him with a soft, somewhat shaky sigh. He said nothing, but tightened his hold on her and kissed the top of her head. They stayed that way for a long time, as the winds picked up and the sky grew darker, and finally, Shannon’s voice shattered the silence as she called down, “Are you guys coming or what?”

McKenna lifted her head and let out a weak laugh. “Her timing is perfect, isn’t it?”

But Loki didn’t smile. He swept the tip of his forefinger over her cheek and murmured, “I will return for you. I promise.”

She managed a smile. “I bet you say that to all the Midgardians.”

He still didn’t smile, but instead looked even more serious than before. His expression was far more dour than it had been that first night, when she found him sprawled on the area rug just beyond her front door. What lay ahead of him weighed heavily upon him and he couldn't hide it.

“Come on!” Shannon called with more impatience. “I’m starving and you two lovebirds already have a room. You can get back to it after dinner.”

Loki pulled away, but reached for her hand. This time, his hand didn’t feel quite as cold as usual. He gave her hand a squeeze as they made their way up the dune and to the wooden walkway leading from the beach to the B&B.

Shannon paused on the first step of the veranda. “Did I interrupt a moment there?”

“No, it’s fine,” Loki said.

“Because it’ll make you both happy to know I’m leaving tomorrow. After breakfast. I’ve gotta get back to work.” 

McKenna groaned and slapped her hand to her forehead. She’d been on vacation all week, but she was due back on Monday. “Damn it. I have to call Scott and ask for a few more days.”

“I’ll talk to him.” Shannon waved away her concern. “He shouldn’t have a problem with it. He never does.”

“I don’t know, Shay. How do I even start to explain this?”

Shannon grinned. “I think if you tell him you’re helping a god, he’d probably understand.”

“You think so?” McKenna drawled sarcastically. “Would you believe it?”

Loki looked from her to Shannon and back. “Who is Scott?”

McKenna rubbed her forehead. “He owns the bar. Shay and I are bartenders.”

“You work in a tavern?”

“Yeah,” she nodded. “But, it’s not too bad. Scott pays well and the tips are good.”

“And the drunks only get grabby every now and then,” Shannon added.

Loki’s forehead furrowed as he looked from Shannon to McKenna and back. “Grabby?”

“Oh, we get some real winners in the place. Guys who think they are the shit and can grab us when and where they feel like it.”

“Do they now?”

McKenna didn’t miss the frost in Loki's voice. “It’s not quite that bad. And there’s bouncers, so—” At Loki's puzzled expression, she clarified, “you know, security? Anyway, they’re all around the floor so the grabbers don’t get to hang around all that long.”

“Still—”

“No still, Loki. And I know that look, so don’t even think about it. We’re not going anywhere near Brunswick just yet.” McKenna rolled her eyes and tugged his hand to continue up the steps. “I don’t ask for a lot of time off, so it shouldn’t be a problem.”

“I’ll talk to him and let you know. I’ll tell him you’re taking care of a sick aunt or something.”

The room was dark and quiet. The windows were open, and Loki could hear the faint crash of the waves as they broke along the shore. It was a cool night, no need for air conditioning. 

McKenna was asleep. He could just make out her shape beneath the light quilt she insisted on using. She was always cold. Then again, of course she was—he wasn’t nearly as warm as humans were and she spent more than enough time crushed up against him. A chill had to have set in at some point.

It was nearly midnight. Their clothes lay scattered from one end of the room to the other. The neatly made bed didn’t remain so neatly made, although they never did make it back into that wonderful shower. McKenna practically glowed by the time he was finished with her, and she worked a special magic on him as well. Amazing, really. Absolutely, utterly amazing.

But whereas she sank into contented slumber, he couldn’t sleep. His mind refused to still, but whirled like a dynamo, faster and faster, until he thought he’d go mad from it.

So there he sat, on the loveseat, staring out at the white tips of ocean waves that seemed to almost glow in their brightness. They reminded him of the seas of Asgard, the way they’d roiled the night he and Thor did battle on the Bifrost. The night he was hurled into the abyss.

He rubbed his forehead. No. That wasn’t entirely true. In exile, he’d tried to convince himself—and almost managed to do so successfully—that Thor tossed him into the abyss. But the truth was, he chose to let go of Odin’s staff. He chose to drop off the face of Asgard and plummet into the unknown.

Anything had to be better than being reminded how he failed to prove himself to Odin.

He tried to convince himself he didn’t care. About Odin. About Asgard. About Thor. Even about Frigga, which was one of the greatest lies he told himself. 

McKenna told him how she felt like such a monster because her last words to her mother were angry ones.

His last words to his mother were cruel.

While he was imprisoned in Asgard’s dungeon, she’d come to visit him, even though Odin forbid it. But Loki had inherited her gifts, one of them being the gift of illusion and by using that gift she’d passed on to him, she could make her image appear wherever she wished. And as long as he didn’t touch her, they could talk—or disagree—about anything. Her visits were the only things that kept him sane during that dark time. Neither his brother nor Odin troubled to visit. And when he needed Loki's help, Thor promised him he would one day return to the dungeon, that he no longer considered them brothers any more than Loki had. Should Loki betray him, Thor warned, he would feel no guilt in killing him. And Loki believed every word Thor spoke.

On the day the Dark Elves penetrated Asgard’s defenses, Frigga appeared in Loki's cell, serene and beautiful, with eyes almost the same shade of blue-green as his own. He was not her offspring, but she’d gifted him with everything she had.

They’d argued and when Frigga made mention of Odin as being his father, he was quick to yell, “He is not my father!”

She looked at him, still serenity personified, and hint of a smile played at her lips. A sad smile, but a smile nonetheless as she calmly asked, “Am I not your mother, then?” 

“You’re not.”

He winced now, turning his gaze from the sea to the sky. The moon was full. Silvery light cascaded across the water, across the sand, across their room. He followed the beam’s path. Right to McKenna.

The last words he spoke to Frigga were said to hurt her. He was miserable in the dungeon. Hated every creeping moment. And in his fury, he lashed out at the one person who still cared what became of him. She made sure he had books, if not freedom, and someone to talk to, and to listen.

And his last words were meant to hurt.

That night, Fandral was the one to tell him of Frigga’s murder. There was no outlet wide enough for his grief, for his anger to vent. There would never be revenge enough.

But at the same time, had she not died, Thor never would have come to him for help. And he would not be in Bay Head, New Jersey, on the verge of falling in love with a Midgardian woman whose kindness was stronger than her fear.

He didn’t want to leave her. Not to the mercies of men such as the lunkhead Joe, or those who thought so little of her they grabbed her as if she were no more than a plaything. But the chances of his surviving his next encounter with the Chitauri was unlikely. They wanted him dead. He’d not only failed to deliver them the Tesseract, but because of him, a third of the Chitauri army had been annihilated. They wanted revenge.

They wanted his blood to spill.

McKenna sighed in her sleep and rolled over, tucking a hand beneath her cheek. In the moonlight, her hair shone almost silver. He wished she would wear it down more often instead of pulled away from her face. It was beautiful and thick, and he wanted to gather it in his hands and let it spill through his fingers. 

She was just stunning. And she thought he said so in order curry her favor, to make her capitulation easier. But nothing could be further from the truth and it baffled him how she did not seem to see the woman he saw. How was that even possible? How could she not see what he did? She was a temptress, soft and curvy, with a body made to be loved by a man who knew how.

No, he didn’t want to leave her. He wanted only to spend the rest of his days there, with her. Now he understood why Thor was so protective of this realm. Now he understood why Jane Foster had ‘turned him soft’, as he once taunted Thor.

Well, McKenna turned him soft as well, and it was a softness he never thought would ever seek him out, one he’d sneered at and mocked. If this was love, he’d thought he wanted no part of it.

Unless it was with McKenna.

He rubbed his eyes as he rose from the loveseat and crossed to the bed. He wanted to show McKenna his world. Wanted her to see him as he truly was. But, in order for that to happen, he’d have to admit his latest deceit and seek forgiveness, to somehow redeem himself as far as Odin and Thor were concerned.

That was the rub. He didn't know if such redemption was even possible and there was only one way to find out, but with it came an enormous risk. 

Loki slid into bed beside McKenna. Gentle heat wafted from her, beckoned to him. Her warmth offset the chill in his blood and as he slid an arm about her and gently tugged her close, she sighed in her sleep. She rolled in his arms to snuggle her head against his chest and her arm draped over his hips. Her fingertips brushed his flank and he almost shivered from it. The slightest touch, and his desire for her burned bright blue. 

She stirred, lifting her head and asked in a sleepy voice, “Loki?”

“Yes?”

“Where were you?”

“I was sitting over there. I couldn’t sleep.” He kissed the top of her head. “But you can, so go back to sleep.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. Just much on my mind.”

“About leaving?”

He sighed softly. He didn’t want her to cry and he knew she’d been on the verge of doing so earlier, on the beach. That was to be avoided if at all possible. Tears made him feel helpless and no god—him especially—liked feeling helpless. “About what I must do to get back into my father’s good graces.”

“Laufey?”

He smiled. “No, love. Odin.”

“But, I thought—”

He grimaced. His story never grew any prettier. It was violence and more violence, with some humiliation and defeat thrown in for good measure. “Yes, Laufey was my true father. But I—well, I—”

She peered at him through heavy-lidded, sleepy eyes. “You killed him, didn’t you?”

“I did.” 

“Tell me, is there anyone you haven’t killed?”

“Well,” he arched one brow at her, “I haven’t killed you.”

“True.”

He relaxed then as she rested her chin on his chest and smiled at him. “But, why do I think I should be sleeping with one eye open, considering your track record?”

“I like you, Midgardian.” He brushed her hair out of her eye, his fingers lingering as he smoothed it over her ear. Her hair was every bit as soft as it looked. “I don’t kill those I like.”

“Then why do you call me Midgardian? It sounds like an insult to me.”

“I mean it not that way, love.”

She shivered and smiled. “I like the way that sounds. Much better than Midgardian.”

“I speak them both as endearments.”

She squinted. “It’s almost three in the morning. You should get some sleep.”

With that, she yawned and as he continued stroking her hair, she let her head come to rest on his chest again. “Are you going to stay here, or are you going to insist on sleeping on the loveseat again?”

“I will sleep anywhere you might be sleeping. I find my mind rests much better when you’re in my arms than so far from my reach.” He kissed the top of her head. 

“Mmmm…” she murmured drowsily. “Me, too.”

“Good night, McKenna.”

“’Night, Loki.”

for those of you who have read demon in the woods, he got to meet the white tigers :)

his bedchamber walls are carved into trees bc he loves the woods

his favourite trees in particular are pine trees (or just evergreen trees in general)

he used to be afraid of the dark (many possibly worrying? interesting? implications to this; i won’t get into it here tho)

he likes bright colours, but wears black all the time basically for the aesthetic

he met his younger half-sister, Ulla, when he was a seer’s apprentice in Fjerda 

the darkling is a musician! He plays the fiddle, and growing up, he played the balalaika and oud (i wonder if he can read tablature,,)

🎢- Were there any scenes you were nervous about? For audience reception or otherwise?

ALL OF IT JSHDJSKD, but again a lot of the enki scenes i was worried would be too edgy TM, and the whole annunaki plot as well i was worried might be too ‘out there’ for ppl, but it takes the story exactly where i always wanted it and lines everything up perfectly so i went for it lol. i was also ofc worried if people would like ila or not bc oc but most ppl love her actually which is so 😭❤️

probably ! ive learned i definitely like the edgy/darker and emotionally driven stories with ongoing plot, so that trend will almost definitely continue. idk if ill write a dystopia again anytime soon, but i think my future stuff will at least retain that long and heavy vibe

oh yEA like basically i was ready to quit after the very first chapter before it was even written and kinda just got it all out on a whim of motivation but was expecting to flake on it like i tend to do with projects, but the invested response to it was just so uplifting that its what ive been riding on all ten chapters and im so grateful for it :’)))

✏️-Would you go back and change anything if you could?

hHHHHHHH yes and ok this is terrible but i actually tend to avoid re-reading my older chapters until i hAVe to bc i suffer from that sO much ,,, , its just little things like tiny words i wanna change or bits i wanna take out/put in and once or twice ive even caught a mistake or plot hole/smth i forgot to add that i rly do have to go back and edit and i just turn to dust every tim e

⭐- What’s a scene/paragraph you’re proud of?

i really liked the northern lights scene!! it was meant to be a pivotal moment of that ‘bittersweetness’ vibe i was talking abt and it was another one of those scenes i had been planning for a while;;;

“ I think of how much the rest of the family would love this. This isn’t like the moon and the sun, where I can see it and know that even if it looks different, they’ll see the same one soon enough, wherever they are. isdfhSDF YEs, part of my hesitation to write came from this thing where i always just assumed there was a wildly high standard of writing in fandom spaces like in original literature spaces, where you had to have like 10+ sentences to a paragraph and you had to describe every tiny detail of a setting and you had to follow every single grammar rule or it was unreadable but like. genuinely its like sculpting with words as long as you have a shape ppl get the idea which is such a weight off my shoulders lol, its still a lot of work but so much fun to know i can to an extent do what i want and ppl actually like it like that. i also learned that like most other writers i have to cause my favs emotional and physical pain,

🎁- Any writing advice for people who want to write something like this?

hhHHHH 1. please do it its so fun just give in to the edge my guy , 2. try to get comfortable re-reading your chapters, for me its like when ppl listen to themselves sing/act but im trying to do better bc its so much more consistent when i keep it fresh in my mind and it also boosts confidence when u can pick out the things u like instead of the things u dont, 3. trying to have at least one scene in mind for each chapter that ur excited to write so u can have motivation to update faster! for me it doesnt have to be smth i think would excite the audience either like it could be the most basic thing but just having an idea of it and knowing i want to see it come to life rly helps me stay on top of it all

Lions. Big cats, and cats, of course, but lions are my favorite. I'm actually heading into college now to get a degree in biological sciences, and, long story short, my lifetime goal is to save the big cats! (MSG me bout that if you wanna hear me rant n ramble too)

FOOD. Holy SHIT I love trying new recipes. I'll get cravings at midnight, look to see what's in the pantry and look up recipes that I can swing by on! Sometimes its perfect, other times... Total failure. (I've had bad luck with mug cakes lately)

My OCs. I know this also seems redundant, but these guys are like friends n family to me, all in my head. And it's not just Marcie, Devion, and Jayden, either! I have so many that aren't even connected to ninjago that I love so much. I'd be happy to introduce some if you'd like. (Again, just ask!)

Oooo, this one’s hard, because usually when I see a headcanon my first reaction is “oh cool, that’s a neat headcanon!” ... I’ve been sitting here thinking about it for 10 minutes now, and I honestly can’t come up with one!

Poppy: What’s one of your biggest headcanons for the series?

I have a lot of headcanons that I really like so I’m just gonna list some of them:

Whitestorm and Tigerclaw were best friends when they were apprentices, and even had a bit of a romantic relationship when they were young, but it didn’t work out. (this is why Bluestar didn’t trust Whitestorm to be deputy)

Some cats I see as gay: Hawkfrost, Sol, Lionheart, Redtail, Runningwind, Stonefur, Leopardstar, Rosetail, Russetfur.

All the tortoiseshell toms are trans! And other cats on top of that ofc

Trans Mothwing!

Many, many years later, in Starclan, Rainflower did eventually sincerely apologize for how horribly she treated Crookedstar. It took them a long time, and they aren’t exactly close, but they get along ok (and because I know this fandom can be Like That sometimes, I don’t want to get into it but I relate to Crookedstar’s parent situation very much. I’m not saying that Rainflower deserves to be forgiven, but I like to think that she and Crookedstar eventually got on better terms)

I would be Spottedtalon, warrior of Riverclan! I remember taking that one quiz on the warriors website a long time ago when I was younger and getting Spottedtalon of Riverclan as my website assigned warriorsona. Ever since then, she’s been my main warriors oc, probably for like eight years now! I don’t think of her exactly as “me as a warrior cat” anymore, since she’s more of a separate character now, but we are still very similar and she has changed over time as I have changed over time.

Hello dear author, I’m glad we share one of these wonderful little fandoms and I hope you’ll have fun writing for it. The sections aren’t all of equal length for one reason or another but I love them all so much, from the classics I’ve been requesting since I started doing Yuletide (can’t have enough of those!) to this year’s shiny new findings. I tried to leave both specific and non-specific prompts for each canon and, again, I wanna see the farfetched postcanon scenario just as much as the vague one-word prompt and my general likes. Pick whatever works for you, or mix and match!

Ghost Trick: Cabanela, Jowd

General: platonic or romantic, loyalty kink here we go, in any shape and form. Night time and secrets. Out of town. Knitwear. Twenty years from now. Size difference. UST. Cabanela’s scarf being in the way sometimes. Cabanela’s legs being in the way sometimes. I have Final Fantasy on my mind a lot recently so any FFIV, VI, VII, T, IX, X, XII or XIII reimagining would be fantastic (Monk Jowd, dancer/red mage Cabanela...?), or indeed The Last Remnant, but also regular fantasy, space opera, sci-fantasy… anything fancy!

Canon-specific dislikes: Sissel not being Jowd’s cat in the new timeline (which ofc doesn’t shut out Yomiel’s unbreakable bond with his cat – as the saying goes, Sissel has four paws...), infidelity

Cabanela&Jowd or Cabanela/Jowd: I love Cabanela being fierce and dazzling bright and determined and loyal to the very end, dancing to his own rhythm, so sure of himself and of his ideas that he doesn’t even need to prove to anyone that he’s right. Too sure of the wrong idea, once, and everything crashed and burned. And I love Jowd being the immovable object to Cabanela’s unstoppable force, a self-depreciating asshole with a penchant for gallows humor that grows more morbid by the hour, and also incredibly smart (both jerks figured out Sissel’s powers better than Sissel did) and athletic and with an unsuspected talent for stealth.

I ship them dearly, as part of a triad (or Jowd-centered V...? Has it been explored?) with Alma with all the fun possibilities of the third party sneaking into the marriage and negotiating that relationship. Or adjusting to a life together with Kamila in a no-reset scenario or a what-if in which Alma was never around (please no breakups or noncanon deaths if you don't want her around).  But I also want to read all the best friends fic with the corniest, most intense found family dynamics you can muster!

Alternate scenario where it’s Cabanela who keeps his memories, not Jowd: how does that change their dynamic in the new timeline? Or what if Cabanela stays dead in ch15 like he wished he could, joins the rest of the gang as a ghost and goes back 10 years with the others and so both of them keep their memories? (with my apologies to Yomiel, whose ch16-17 redemption has just been made a lot harder by the added stowaway)

Jowd knowing how much Cabs did for him and remembering him broken and bloodied is A Lot. especially if he’s a lil into it (and mr spotless is. not really on the same page.)

Casefic! With ghosts! There could be a new ghost created by Temsik’s shards or even by some unfortunate soul dying on top of the buried meteorite. Or with their own ghost, teaming up with Sissel! There’s so much potential for tense, death-defying situations! (with make-outs afterwards, if that’s your thing)

Deathfic, until it’s reverted. Jowd dying in Cabanela’s arms or the other way round, but one of them knows about Sissel and the other does not…

Jowd’s loyalty to Cabanela being tested for once, as a change of pace.

More detailed prompts for a few FF fusion AUs: FFX, Summoner Jowd and reluctant Guardian Cabanela. Any moment of their pilgrimage could be fun (and/or tragic and/or intense), or if you like a more detailed prompt, would Yunalesca’s truths be the tipping point of Jowd’s conviction? Would Cabanela manage to drag himself and his Summoner to safety before she killed them? What would life look for them afterwards as survivors bearing forbidden truths, would they stay away from Yevon? FFTA or XII, viera Cabanela and nu mou or bangaa Jowd. I’m sure there’s a poignant plot about magic-endowing extraterrestrial rocks and political backstabbing somewhere at the intersection of Ivalice and GT. If you can see it, I’m here to read it. But I’ll be honest here, the real point here is bunny Cabs. Please consider bunny Cabs. (viera, nu mou, bangaa visual refs for non-FFTA players who might wanna do a regular fantasy AU instead?) FFVI, Cabanela faked defecting to the Empire and is a magitek-infused officer while Jowd has Blitz and... Sketch somehow? And they meet again in the World of Ruin and things are very emotional?

The Last Remnant: Any (Pagus, Maddox, Sibal, David)

General: characterization based on battle quotes, red bubble dialogues, and even their unique stat (‘authority’ is a natural fit for David but ‘romance’ tells me something new about Sibal!) Character interaction. Bit of worldbuilding. What’s another festival they celebrate? Do they erect something else instead of the Valeria Heart? Any fun discoveries down in Siebenbur? Where the hell IS Veyriel, anyway, do they go look for it and if so what do they find out? End of an age. Old bonds.

Canon-specific dislikes: strong narrative emphasis on game mechanics. Stuff like mentioning that a character leads a unit is fine, but for example listing the materials they need for their weapon upgrade would take me out of the story.

The Qsiti bunch: just give me the deets on Qsiti worlduilding and I’ll be a happy camper. I ship these three very much but I’m also invested in their friendship and in each of them as a singular character. The fact that Pagus is a goddamn catch is one of my favorite things, and he can be a smart cookie with any of the other smart cookies in the party, or be a history buff with Glenys, or tutor Yuniver. Proud, paranoid chatterbox Maddox entrenched in his cover-up stories, finding it hard to stop being a spy and relax, maybe spending time with someone very simple, like Sheryl, or a very different kind of fellow veteran like Roberto. Self-assured Sibal who probably knows a lot about the mysteries of the underground world and is also the most romantic soul out of the entire cast, talking volcanoes with Paris or discussing the Rainbow Bond with Haruko? If you also like all three of them, either as old friends or as a ship, who of them comes up with what excuse to reconnect again now that Remnants are no more, or do they drop all pretenses and admit they just want to make up for lost time? And what do Qsiti cuddles look like?

David: Post-canon, adjusting to a life without remnants - how did it feel to be bound to one or two of them anyway, and what’s it like without, and suddenly knowing you’ll be the first Nassau in who knows how long who’ll reach old age? - and without Rush. Finding support and friendship even outside his trusted Generals. I’d be interested in seeing him get closer to any unique leader you might like, I can easily see half the characters absolutely adoring him sooner or later. From the Duke of Ghor to Roberto, to sweet Zolean who knows what it’s like to lose someone dear and hope he comes back, or Rhagoh & Remnant Kate, or Paris or Jager or, eventually, even Allan… David/Rush prompts: focus on Rush’s supernatural nature, how he was a strange boy with a good heart (Things Unchangeable meant so much to me!) who ignored human social conventions because he was not in fact human. Reunion fic more than a decade into the future, showing how David has changed and with emphasis on Rush’s Remnant nature.

David & Qsiti: basically a mix of the other prompts. David is close to all his Generals but what’s his dynamic with Pagus specifically? Is he a mentor, a friend, did Pagus stop David once when he was about to do something very stupid? And what can David learn about his dear General from people who have known him since long before David was born?

Myst: Yeesha, Jeff Zandi

General: The oddest of friendships. Road trip. Desert sunrise. Desert bird shenanigans, be it with actual roadrunners speeding by or cartoon ones. Descent. An oddly shaped rock. Strangers. Shooting stars. Any line from Words.

Canon-specific dislikes: please no Yeesha bashing?

Yeesha & Jeff: He’s definitely Team Yeesha and she could definitely do with a friend, the year is 2018 and I still want fic about this unlikely duo.

How much can he really say he gets her? When did they meet? Was it when a younger Jeff was exploring D’ni with his father Elias, did that create a rift between the two?

What do they do when they hang out? Has he played the Myst games – heck, has she? Does he play Magic the Gathering like his RL counterpart?

Do they set out on a road trip because she needs to chill for a hot minute and experience for herself that whole ‘you shall seek the journey’ thing? Late night driving and liminal places could be cool. Or does she link him somewhere cool with no travel time needed?

Do they agree to meet by his camp fire once a month or something like that, and one time Yeesha doesn’t show up? What happened?

Does he get to hang out with bahro thanks to her, in the depths of the Cavern where the DRC will never be able to reach, and what’s that encounter like for him (and for her, and for the bahro)?

Maybe some relaxing time can take place after End of Ages. He’d notice that something has changed, she’s somewhat less of a depressed wreck that she used to be...

Speaking of End of Ages, was Jeff chosen by the Tablet? If so, how did he fail his quest? I appreciate Esher a lot so if you go for an EoA plot feel free to use him too.

Anything based on Uru history is great!

The Secret History of Twin Peaks: Tammy Preston

General: Character dossiers that involve Tammy more directly. TSHOTP themes being used front and center. Owls, figurative and otherwise. Tammy Fashion™. Tammy Freeform Infodump™. The risks of staring into the void for too long. Gentle illusions. The moon. Static buzzing. Any title from the s3 ethereal whooshing compilation used as a prompt, actually. AUs and fusion AUs are great for this fandom! I have Final Fantasy on my mind a lot recently so any FFVI, VII, T, IX, X, XII or XIII reimagining would be fantastic (what would Tammy even be... scholar, fencer, mystic knight...?), or indeed The Last Remnant, but also regular fantasy, space opera, sci-fantasy... anything fancy!

Canon-specific dislikes: Gordon being a harmless, fun dad or conversely having the worst intentions. Clear explanations for canonical ambiguities.

Tammy: what I find fascinating about Tammy’s positioning in the narrative of the books (and of the show, but not as markedly) is that there is this whole narrative of trauma, and the circularity of trauma, even within Blue Rose and the organizations that came before it, and she stands at the end of it and learns about it all without being directly involved. She can learn from it in a sheltered position. Maybe when her turn will come, she’ll know a little better. Her name’s anagram is Praemonstrata, “Having been guided”. She’s the new Archivist, in a way. She’s the future of Blue Rose, last woman standing as soon as Albert and Gordon retire and/or vanish (and after the show’s finale, I can’t see either of them lasting long). What does it all mean, in the context of the book’s overarching theme of secrets VS mysteries and the cost of knowledge (and the show’s connections between trauma and the fragmentation of the self, and TFD’s doubling down on the general concept of shoveling oneself out of the shit, and her moving final considerations)?

What could be a test for her, something that would involve her personally and make her risk losing her way? What makes her tick - would she cross to other worlds, how, and why?

I don’t know much about aliens, but I really enjoyed how the book wove it all into Twin Peaks lore. If you want to do the same with some other bit of UFO trivia and have Tammy draw her connections, I’m interested!

The books show that she’s not only Albert’s spiritual successor as the only other rationally-inclined soul in there, she also knows Albert personally to some extent, for example that he’s a jazz lover. Have they ever gone drinking in cool (LGBT…?) clubs with fancy live music? Are they jazz buddies or what kind of music is she into (and what does he have to say about her tastes)?

What other characters or pieces of TP history would she look into? What about that Diane dossier, for example? What about Lucy? (If you have her look into Diane, please be empathetic toward her and her tulpa)

Twin Peaks: Harry Truman, Lucy Moran, Chet Desmond, Garland Briggs

This one is an OR request – feel free to only write about some of these people and completely ignore the others. There were just too many good characters in the tagset and I couldn’t choose so, you know, to hell with matchability. The prompts are for the characters on their own or with some nominated canon mates but if you have an idea for Ruby&Lucy, Garland&Albert, Harry&Naido or any other odd combo, go for it!

General: the mystery of the woods, obviously. How do they relate to the woods, what do they gain and what do they lose in the woods. Case fic but they don’t find out jack shit, someone disappears, David Bowie was there, it’s complicated. Fragmented, shifted, mirrored identities. New Lodge spaces. Still any title from the s3 ethereal whooshing compilation used as a prompt. When in doubt, add Margaret. AUs and fusion AUs are great for this fandom! I have Final Fantasy on my mind a lot recently so any FFVI, VII, T, IX, X, XII or XIII reimagining would be fantastic (paladin Harry, dancer Lucy, fighter Chet, sage Garland...?), or indeed The Last Remnant, but also regular fantasy, space opera, sci-fantasy... anything fancy!

Canon-specific Dislikes: any singular Dreamer being the ‘source’ of canon, BOB (let alone Judy) being forever defeated in the finale, Judy being an active malevolent presence in the characters’ lives, ‘Odessaverse’ being the reality layer, the Fireman's House by the Sea being the White Lodge, Naido being nothing more than Diane but since she was nominated as her own character I'm hopeful here

Harry: Bookhouse Boy Harry both in the sense of avid reader Harry promoting literacy and vague bastion against the evil in the woods Harry. Harry getting a sword out of a pond in the woods like he was meant to but , like, in a way that’s less random kitsch and more meaningful magical realism. Harry and Frank as actual brothers but also Frank as a projection of Harry’s insecurities. Harry, Ed and Hawk as friends. Harry finding some sense of belonging somewhere, somehow.

Lucy: Kimmy Robertson said she would like to be the color blue in Lynch’s palette, if the prompt works for you. Lucy taking her time to understand and organize the world around her. Lucy with Andy (the one functional couple in all of canon, bless), with Wally, with Maggie Brown and the rest of the new sheriff’s station cast. Lucy with people who don’t usually appreciate her (both sheriffs and Albert come to mind) but have to come to terms with the fact that she’s amazing. I also like that Hawk is a first-class gossip, apparently, and so is Lucy, so if THAT prompts works for you… last but not least, she seems to have some sort of connection with the symbolic weave of reality (picking chairs when a very important chair is introduced, wondering about bunnies and Jack Rabbit palace will be relevant, Robertson said that Lynch said that Lucy perceives a lot and needs time to sort it all out) and I’d love to see it explored one way or another. If you wanna go wild with meta Invitation to Love shenanigans, Lucy could be a good POV character.

Chet: What’s his deal? Empirically, new canon draws a hell of a lot of connections between personal troubles and being jettisoned out of reality. So why did he? A friend recalls that he was named after Chet Baker and Norma Desmond, so that could be a starting point. I like to think that he manages to pull himself together at some point and make it back – how? Does he find any familiar faces beyond the curtains, like Phil? Finally, like all Blue Rose and Sheriff’s station characters, when all other prompts fail: office shenanigans. Please. Now that they’ve all been blatantly retconned as a merry gang who coexisted at some point, please give me Chet bouncing off literally any other named character in there.

Garland: He’s a good bean, almost naive compared to Doug Milford & co in TSHOTP, and I wish him the best wherever he is... the metaphysical adventures of Garland’s floating head could be a fic (maybe Bill Hastings and Ruth Davenport could tag along). Or back when he was alive, weird occurrences at Listening Post Alpha up on Blue Pine mountain. He wasn’t born in town, so what’s HIS relationship with the woods? Or an encounter with some of the federal cast, like Gordon and Phil or a very young Albert. I’m also intrigued by his s3 narrative but I have a very negative view of The Plan(tm) so I don’t really know what to make of it. If you also think that the Fireman’s hints only ended in tragedy and that Blue Rose’s search for Judy was a monumental act of hubris, and you have a good spin for Garland’s role in all of this, I’m listening! All I got is something like "he gave his last fuck... now he's free....." (not that Garland is legally allowed to say fuck, I mean)

Albert/Harry: my main headcanon is that they got together in the aftermath of Coop’s disappearance, holding onto each other in his absence not unlike James and Donna did with Laura. Then... did they last? Or was it a terrible moment to get together (...not unlike James and Donna) and they had to go their separate ways for a while before finding each other again? Does this sad time last up until the end of s3, when Albert can finally quit the castle of lies that was his job and stay with Harry? I am also, however, open to other timelines for these two. Emotional reunions are great and so is domestic fic with a dash of surrealism. What would Harry do for Albert? For example, when would he take his side in a heated dispute with someone else? What would Albert share about his past? What could they do in town? Or do they take a well-deserved vacation somewhere else? Do they team up for a small investigation? Old men taking care of each other is very much welcome, especially after Harry gets through the worst of his treatments.

Dale/Harry: Harry seeing his Coop again... somewhere, somehow. Maybe he perceives him in the woods, maybe Coop isn't all human now. Monster cuddles very welcome. Could be canon divergence but could very well be post-s3. Harry getting closure for waiting all that time in front of Glastonbury and never giving up on Coop... they can live in the woods together...

Harry&Lucy: what could make them spend some time together outside of work (is it donuts)? Does he ask for relationship advice since she and Andy are literally the only people in town who could make it work? Does she feel loyal to him and Frank or is it just a job to her? Does she go visit him after s3 and does he tell her that she was very brave? What about Wally - Harry is the boy’s godfather after all, I don’t usually read kidfic but I can make all sorts of exceptions for my beloved Wally (maybe when he’s more of a teen than a kid). Are they all fans of Marlon Brando?

Chet/Sam: reunion fic! Chet’s been AWOL for years, Sam has fallen through the cracks, how do they find each other again and why do they choose to remain off the grid? I would also like to read about them in the present day-ish, handwaving the return and reunion. Maybe they made a new life for themselves. If Sutherland were to play Sam again, Sam would be... notably more buff. What caused that change, was it traveling with Chet, what kind of person is he now? Could they be in Buenos Aires, investigating on their own whatever that shrinking box was?

Chet&Dale: In which ways are they both real boys and in which ways are they aspects of each other? How do they work together?

Chet/Albert: whatever passes for an uncomplicated office romance around those parts, where they both know very well that they’re not the other’s One True Love, but they have a good understanding - except when Albert’s pacifism clashes with Chet‘s readiness to throw down 24/7. But then again Albert is also ready to throw down 24/7, only with words instead of fists, so there’s fertile ground for conflict and unexpected agreements. Also they’re hot.

Garland&Harry: they’re both good dogs living in a cold and cruel world, with their own partial experiences of other worlds beyond this tangible reality, and I think they should be at least a little friends. Maybe Harry found himself at Garland’s observatory one day without even knowing how he’d gotten there, maybe they chatted at the RR. Then there’s Mfrost spitballing some connection which, given how Garland ‘died’ literally on the day after s2, can only be read as Harry passing his info to Garland when Garland was already beyond this world. I’d read that in a heartbeat.

I didn’t think I published any but 2017 was longer than I remembered (this Cupid!fic has taken over my brain) and I actually finished 3. Ish.

I’m saying ish because all the ways to say I love you is a drabble thing that I thought I’d keep writing on while I was doing other things and HAHAHAHA.

2. Work you are most proud of (and why):

It has to be LBAT because I started that fic in 2013 and well. Look where we are. I never would’ve finished it if it weren’t for @almostdarkobject and it taught me that I can write more than I thought I could and also finish a fic before uploading it. 

3. Work you are least proud of (and why):

None because all writing is good writing even when it’s bad writing

4. A favorite excerpt of your writing:

That’s like asking me to pick one of my favorite children (spoiler alert I do not have any children). So I decided to pick this moment because I think it’s very important that people realize that you can always redefine yourself and figuring yourself out can be an unending process and that’s all ok!

Liam opens his mouth to protest that, then bites his lip. He had thought of Zayn. Of the way he’d smile at him, tongue pressed to the back of his teeth. Of how everything had seemed less scary when Zayn’s shoulder bumped into his. “I’m just. We’ve never. I don’t have Zayn.” It sounds a bit hollow.

“But you like him, yeah?” Louis prompts softly.

“Well, yeah. Sure I do. He’s-”

“Yeah, yeah, he’s been a great friend. I’ve heard that. That’s wonderful, Li. But I’ve never seen you go starry eyed over Nialler. And unless you’re talking about me like I’ve personally hung up the moon and decorated the sky with stars, he’s not a friend in the way that I’m your friend.” Liam can’t really protest that, as much as he wants to. He loves Louis, there’s no doubt about that. But not in the way he loves Zayn. He doesn’t think he loves anyone in the way he loves Zayn.

“I’m not gay though,” he almost whispers it, so soft he’s not sure Louis has even heard it. He’s not sure he wouldn’t prefer that, if he’s honest.

“I’m not saying you are, love,” Louis’ voice sounds patient. “You don’t need to label yourself. You don’t even need to know exactly what it is you’re feeling. Just as long as you know that whatever you feel, it’s ok. It’d be ok if you did consider Zayn to be more than just a mate.”

Liam swallows, looks up at him. “It is?”

Louis nods, wraps his arms around him. “Yeah, Li. It’s alright. Whatever you feel, it’s always alright, yeah? Feelings are never wrong. They’re confusing and frustrating sometimes, but you always have the right to feel what you feel, yeah? No one gets to tell you that you can’t. Just because you’ve never liked boys before doesn’t mean that you can’t. Doesn’t mean that you can’t like Zayn. And even if you’ll never like boys again, that doesn’t make the way you feel right now any less valid.”

“Feels weird,” he hums, looking up at Louis. “Like. I never thought of myself as, y’know. I mean you’ve been with girls but you’ve always told me that you weren’t really in love. That you just weren’t ready to admit that you wanted to be with a boy instead.”

Louis looks somewhat amused. “Yea, but, Li, I’m gay. Liking Zayn doesn���t necessarily make you gay. You know that, right? That there’s more than just gay and straight. The way you felt for Dani was real, right? So maybe you’re bisexual. Or pansexual. Or maybe it doesn’t matter what you identify as. It just matters that you like him.”

Hearing it like this, it’s sort of soothing, in a way. Makes him feel settled. “I do,” he admits, wondering if maybe it should feel like a more momentous occasion. His very first crush on a boy. It doesn’t feel so scary though. Not unless he allows himself to think about the fact that Zayn is no longer a part of his life. Or that his silly crush might be unrequited. “Quite a lot, if I’m honest.”

He gets a hug from Louis in response, a kiss to the top of his head. “Alright then. So now that we’ve established that you quite fancy Zayn, what are we going to do about it?”

5. Share or describe a favorite comment you received:

OK so technically this is a comment from 2015 but it’s on the fic I finished this year so I find that it still counts. It’s a comment that hit me where it hurt but in the best ways. I’ve really struggled with the lack of visibility in fandom (feeling as though I’m writing for no one) as well as massive physical issues. This one comment is one I still think of at times. I wish I could hug this person for writing those wonderful words and I hope they know they made my existence better.

Your writing is just, suberb. And I don't know if your thumb / elbow (arm??) still hurts, but I hope it got better! And the fact that you might have written it while you were in pain, that's just, amazing. I don't know why people aren't commenting because WOW, you are just.

(Don't tell anyone I said this but -- you write better than some people who are super duper famous (as in other fans) IN MY OPINION OFC.)

I learned that I can write long fic. I also learned that I grossly underestimate how verbose I am and that 80k is not enough to write a fic in when I’ve been thinking about it for four years.

Man I just hope to finish my fic and that people will like it. I’m 133k deep into a fic that I’m literally expecting one person to read so it’d be fabulous if I was proven wrong and I am happy to grow and accept my being wrong!

Holy shit ok so this is where I gush about my undying love for @londonfoginacup is it? I mean, what can I say?? None of this would’ve happened if it weren’t for her. She’s been reading along with me and helping me and also being a generally amazing person who sends great Christmas cards and who will be rewarded with a care package when I finish this fic because I adore you so effin much and this whole fic is for you.

Big “Malcolm Merlyn and Oliver Queen are lions and no one can convince me otherwise” trash post bcs I can’t help myself

What It Looks Like versus What’s Really Going On.

Fight me.

Warning: Long post under the cut. Because this is so important.

Both Oliver and Malcolm are big muscly brutes but also stealth ninjas. Plus they’re scary predators and they do most of their hunting at night. Ergo, in the animal world, they’re big cats.

The primary difference between the lion and other cat species is that it’s a social animal. Female lions form prides, male lions form coalitions. Malcolm is always more comfortable working with a group than by his lonesome (even if that group is hostile like Team Arrow). After his return from Nanda Parbat he could have chosen to work alone but didn’t. He looked for partners, created an organisation in order to pursue his goal of saving Starling City. Of course he prefers to be the one calling the shots (as leader of his secret organisation or CEO of Merlyn Global or even Ra’s Al Ghul), but he will bend when necessary (he was Ra’s horseman for years after all). As for Oliver, even if he feels like more of a solo artist, one of the first thing he did coming home is bring Diggle into the fold - just like one of the first thing young solitary male lions do after being kicked out of their pride is find themselves a partner, because they know they have almost no chance of making it out there on their own. Wherever he is, Oliver always ends up joining a group or forming his own. These aren’t just things that happen to him: it’s a choice, or a direct result of his personality. Oliver and Malcolm are both always looking to make alliances with different sorts of people (or groups of people). More than that, they are absolutely ready to ally themselves with somebody they don’t like, with each other, if they need to in order to survive, vanquish a common enemy or protect their family.

Generally, there are two things that matters to a lion (apart from food but that’s like every animal on the planet): family and territory/power. Malcolm Merlyn and Oliver Queen in a nutshell. Also note that while male lions are the only male cats who care about family and have a hand in raising their cubs (mostly by offering protection), their focus is the territory. Which is like the whole theme of Malcolm & Oliver’s story in S1: their unbreakable focus on their respective mission despite the distance and tension it creates between them and their respective family members, motivated by their (delusional?) conviction that they are doing this for their family (to secure a better future for them in a better city in the name of those they have lost). The main difference between them being that Malcolm is way more deranged and mostly doesn’t give a shit about human life if they’re not related to him.

Seriously though these two are mad territorial. Every time there’s a new predator showing up on their turf they just go “who are you and wth are you doing in my city rude i’m gonna beat you up”. Well, in season 1 in Malcolm’s case, because after he was ousted he stopped having a turf. But pretty much all 5 seasons for Oliver? (I think the most “wtf” time was when he decreed that the league couldn’t touch Merlyn in S3 while he was in Starling because he was under his protection or something, like I can’t even?? And every time there’s a new vigilante in town he’s like “nope the only illegal justice in this city is mine get out”)

But yeah ultimately one of the things I find most fascinating about lions is also one of the things I find most fascinating about Oliver and Malcolm. Violent, merciless killers who show a softer, more caring side around their loved ones. For lions, it’s like, how vicious and terrible they are to their enemies or preys has absolutely nothing to do with how affectionate and loving they can be to their companions (think Mr T and Kinky Tail of the Mapogos - bloodthirsty bastards who loved each other like hell). That contrast between the monster and the lover is always at play in Oliver and Malcolm’s characters (ofc with different levels of dominance for each side), and it’s just really interesting to me.

Young male lions leave their pride once they come of age, and spend years in hell as nomads struggling to survive in a hostile environment (between buffalo and crocodiles and most dangerous of all: other lions, pride males often in a coalition, eager to hunt them down and break their spine). They have to learn to fend for themselves for the first time (mommy isn’t here to bring the food home any longer), to hunt and fight and stand up for themselves. Most of them die, but those who survive, those who have managed to become... something else, these ones can hope to conquer their own territory by killing or driving away the older resident kings. If this isn’t Oliver Queen’s story I don’t know what is.

Btw, kicking out their grown-up sons is a very important pride male job. Adolescent males (big, lazy, hungry, aggressive, horny and useless) can become a real weight to the pride if they stay around too long, but if the males are neglectful (Malcolm) or distracted dealing with too many prides (Malcolm), they can be late to the task (Malcolm). But once they do it’s always kinda brutal (Malcolm). No offense to Tommy!

Also, really, if we choose an animal to represent Malcolm or Oliver, you know it has to be some major drama-queen. We-have-literally-evolved-a-mane drama-queen level. And the lions mane has basically three main purposes: 1) protection (practical purpose of the suits), 2) intimidation tactics (actual realest purpose of the suits - the whole Hood and Dark Archer personas), and 3) looking gorgeous and attracting females and I think this really fits Ollie Queen and Malcolm Merlyn (Malcolm doesn’t seem particularly interested in sexual or romantic pursuits but he is vain as hell just look at the guy it’s written all over him).

Male lions’ stories are all about war, just like Oliver and Malcolm’s stories are all about war (particularly S1 Oliver). In terms of evolution, they have sacrificed everything in order to become perfect killing machines. Their role in society is to protect or conquer. It doesn’t matter if they’re tired and just want to settle down with their family (happy little cubs!), if they don’t go looking for war war always comes looking for them - it’s a violent life. For lion fans who follow their shenanigans in real life, it can be kind of like Game of Thrones: you have several coalitions fighting over territory - who will be king? And for how long?

So, just like human warriors, there are two types of successful lions: the fiery ones and the cunning ones, of which I kinda think Oliver and Malcolm are fitting representations. Like Oliver “I fought the Dark Archer and Slade Wilson and won thanks to my mad willpower (also remember when I challenged RA’S AL GHUL to a duel twice)” Queen, some lions never run, are always in the thick of battle, and will fight to the death for their territory even against overwhelming odds (in lion fandom, Kinky Tail and Mr T of the Mapogos are again probably the go-to examples). Others tend to pick their battles, avoid serious injury, can patiently wait for a better opportunity or let go of a territory if outnumbered, and sometimes even let the lionesses do the fighting in their stead (the famous Notch is more this type I think - managed to hold on to his first pride alone for 2 years after the death of his companion with the help of the females, got ousted, came back with his sons and took over half the Masai Mara, and remained healthy and beautiful for all of it).

Lions are bloody resilient creatures. Like, it’s astounding what they can survive, and in battle you can see lions fighting to the end despite terrible injuries (freaking broken backs). Oliver Queen is the Arrowverse’s poster boy for resilience, I am not even going to begin listing the reasons why - it’s all over his body anyway and we viewers are treated to many shirtless scenes. And say what you will about Malcolm Merlyn but he also did go through a lot (poison, an arrow through the chest, torture, a handcut - he also lost everything twice), and he’s still healthy and fighting at like ~52 years old (5 years ago he was already saying that Oliver’s youth was a big advantage). “Every warrior must learn the simple truth: that pain is inevitable and suffering is optional”. They both just never give up.

They are both really intelligent, but unlike Ray, Felicity, Barry, etc. they aren’t scientists or tech geniuses. Oliver and Malcolm’s strength lie in tactic and/or strategy, which is what makes them natural leaders. Lions are often seen as big “all brawn and no brains” animals, but they’re actually pretty calculating. They can’t solve complex logical problems like ravens or crows (that’s Felicity btw - Overwatch), but they can count. They know their stuff when it comes to battle. They can calculate the odds, they have their established tactics when it comes to hunting, and they even make strategic choices all the time. 

Cute little heir is a troublemaker who worships his dad. Dad’s best friend/brother gets rid of both of them in the same trap, forcing Dad to sacrifice himself for son, sentencing son to exile. Son stays in exile for years, ravaged by guilt, and grows into a formidable opponent. When son comes back, Dad’s best friend/brother is forcing his mother to do his bidding. He finds out he’s the one responsible for his father’s death and stops him, but not before the bad guy had a chance to destroy his home. Tell me you don’t see the parallel. They’re lions.
