Whenever I see people say things like "Pinkie Pie should've been a pegasus" or "Fluttershy fits earth pony more" I get a little frustrated because TO ME the mane six have always been a really good example of "societal expectations" VS "societal deviance" of the three pony species within equestria.

Earth ponies are almost always expected to be providers. Like the Apple family for example or the Cake family OR even the "flower trio". They provide necessities, often food or they often provide hard labour (note how "background" jobs like construction and taxi pulling are most often done by earth ponies too). Applejack is obviously a perfect example of this! She's the head of her family, she's extremely hard working, shes incredibly physically strong, she's known and relied on by most of Ponyvill. Applejack very much lives up to the expectations that pony society has of earth ponies.

Pinkie Pie on the other hand is not one bit concerned with hard work. Her whole thing is having fun and throwing parties. In a way she is also providing something very important and necessary, socialisation and relaxation, however these are generally not deemed as valuable as strenuous labour and food production. Pinkie Pie is always written off as "childish" or not taking things seriously enough. She isn't deemed as very reliable a lot of the time and has to work very hard to prove herself, more so than someone like Applejack.

Ponyvill was founded by earth pony farmers, and is densely populated by earth ponies. Earth ponies are expected to work hard and grow food and provide for everyone, their roles are incredibly necessary and their work is highly appreciated. However, without someone like Pinkie Pie who deviates from those expectations, Ponyvill would be a miserable place (as seen in the episode Magical Mystery Cure). She may not be a farmer or a construction worker but her divergence from earth pony "standards" is what keeps everything in balance.

The same can be said for Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy too. Rainbow Dash is an exceptional athlete, she flies like no other pony and she almost always has her wits about her. At the end of the day, Rainbow Dash is truly a performer at heart, she wants to be in the Wonderbolts and show off her skills to all of Equestria. Pegasi are expected to be fast, agile, eager, always cool, proud and quick witted just like the Wonderbolts, and just like Rainbow Dash. She is a peak performance pegasus.

Fluttershy is Rainbows exact opposite. She doesn't care for speed, adventure or displays of athleticism, she truly doesn't even care for flying. She is, in both a literal and metaphorical way, very "down to earth", however her role is still very important and her being a pegasus is still very integral to who she is. If it weren't for her experiences of being ostracised for being different she would never have the empathy and dedication to her animals the way she does (and on more practical note, being able to fly does aid her in her work a lot the time). Fluttershy slows down, she's quiet and she gentle which something that other pegasi (and earth ponies honestly) struggle with. It was alway right for Fluttershy to be a pegasus who could soar the skies, because if she never fell down to earth she would have never found her true calling. Without ponies like her, many important things, creatures and events would go unnoticed and unchecked.

Rarity and Twilight Sparkle is kind of a funny one because I think a lot of people may expect Twilight to be the prime example of unicorns, but that's not really true at all. Twilight, despite being our mane character, is actually the deviant one here.

This is illustrated for us almost immediately in the first episode, where she's invited to a party by three other unicorns but ditches it to go study instead. Magic is merely a tool for most unicorns, but for ponies like Twilight or Starlight, it is their whole existence, it's what they were quite literally born to do. Twilight does not value social status at all, she doesn't have time to and growing up so stuck in her studies I'm not even sure she aware that it's such a big deal to others, especially within Canterlot. It's also worth noting that to Twilight, Princess Celestia was always her teacher and Princess Cadence was her babysitter so their status as royals never really mattered to her and she's able to see them more are regular ponies for that reason also.

Most Unicorns are socialites, they value "social currency" and monetary gain more than they value magic. They don't care that the Princesses are very powerful magically, they care more about their political powers and their social status as royals. We see this clearly in the season 2 episode "Sweet and Elite" where Rarity gets swept up on the high society life of Canterlot, when she mentions being from Ponyvill to two random snobby unicorns they look down on her, yet once it's revealed that she's staying at the castle for her visit, things change, mostly notably: her status. Rarity is a prime example of a unicorn, she's stylish, she's ambitious, she's concerned with image, she's social, she has very fine tastes and she's a businesswoman.

As the series progresses we she both Twilight and Rarity gain some fame. Twilight is mostly inconvenienced and troubled by this whereas Rarity, like most unicorns would, relishes in any sort of limelight. Unicorns are expected to be professional, they're most often more modern or "ahead of the curve" than other ponies and tend they to be the primary business owners of Equestria. However without ponies like Twilight, magic would become just an afterthought. Without powerful wizards like Starswirl, dedicated students like Subburt or magic obsessed freaks (affectionate) like Twilight Sparkle, pony society would crumble.

Applejack, Rainbow Dash and Rarity are prime examples of what is expected of earth ponies, pegasi and unicorns, respectively, in Equestrian society. However without ponies like Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy and Twilight Sparkle there would be no balance and no progression. In fact in the episode "Hearts Warming Eve" we literally get canon lore telling us that if it wasn't for three ponies who deviated from the rules and expectations of their respective tribes, that Equestria wouldn't even exist today.

I think the mane six are a great small scale example of how pony society functions and I really appreciate this aspect of the writing <3

this is a regu-bowl account so all regulus ships are pretty much a go for me. also, i have this like messed up spot in my heart for bartylus both as a romantic and platonic ship. *shrugs* i like them toxic and codependent.

anyways, the trio! the unholy trio gods i love them. i love them so much i think they constantly pull each other from darkness. it's just a given, ya know? no one was there for them and they all see each other's missing pieces. so much of their friendship lives in spite of all the people they lost and have left them. "see this? this is true loyalty." something like that. it's messy, convoluted, and complex but somehow it's the easiest thing they've ever done. they recognized each other's whale songs and swam to see who it was that sang back.

and because i'm a regulus girly, i think it's especially wonderful to have rosekiller pine over regulus. rosekiller sex because barty is so heartbroken about regulus. evan snapping at regulus because he keeps chasing after people that don't want him back when they're right there. barty claiming he knows regulus best but when regulus keeps lying to himself evan is the only one who can call him out on his bullshit.

"I've known you since we were kids, we saw each other grow up. Our families have touched branches since the very beginning — do not fucking lie to me, Black." He says as he grips Regulus' chin. Evan is so tired of all the lies. "What. do. you. want?"

. "You. Both of you." "Good. There you go, bunny."

Evan calls regulus bunny btw. He calls barty his pretty knife. Tells you something about the role he plays in the trio and how barty and regulus typically are with each other, huh?

Barty calls regulus starlight, starshine, and princess. He calls evan rosie, red, and, secretly, petal. Out of the three of them he's the most unreasonably feral over his lovers just as he's also the most openly romantic. Big sweeping gestures (no matter how disturbing). Proud declarations.

Regulus doesn't have pet names for barty but will fondly shorten his name to Bee. On Halloween he calls barty, Boo. He calls evan apollo. When he's feeling like a bitch he'll call him Vincent.

Regulus calms barty down, barty calms evan down, and evan calms regulus down.

Evan is dom to bartylus. Regulus is dom to barty. And barty is sub to evan and reg — he has the deepest need to be taken care of. Non-dynamic sex (outside D/s), however, is very different for bartylus *ahem ahem* regulus *ahem* is a cumslut and needs a good dicking down most of the time.

Complex trauma has barty "dropping" from time to time. Which is really fucking hard. Regulus and evan routinely "putting him down" helps for most of the time, but there are instances where he feels himself dropping and the real challenge is getting to both or either one in time. It's... A lot. Barty needs a lot of caring for but it absolutely doesn't fucking matter when Barty is easily the most trusting out of the three and would drop everything for his lovers.

Thoughts on rarijackdash, startrixburst, and chrysarmordance? For me, these are personally my favorite mlp ot3s

I personally hc that Rainbow Dash actually does enjoy dressing up(a la g3 Rainbow Dash, but only occasionally), so other than modeling(cuz she doesn't like sitting still) she actually enjoys Rarity's work(besides, both AJ and RD are like the heroes in Rarity's tropey adventure romance books, with one being strong and brave, and the other being swift and cunning), and there's just something about Rainbow and Applejack's constant competitiveness

I could NEVER break up startrix, and for starburst I really enjoy the childhood friends dynamic. I've actually consumed more mlp fan content than the actual show or comics, so I don't know much about Trixie and Sunburst's dynamic, so they might be better as queer-platonic, but I do enjoy the hc of them both being trans(Trixie being transfem and Sunburst being transmasc)

I think it would be sweet if two beings of love were wives, but it would funny if they were also the wives of Just Some Guy(TM)

rarijackdash - This one is pretty funny, because i see exactly what you find appealing about it, its like a love triangle that ends in a polycule n stuff. Rarity keeping the competition going because she likes both of them and loves them fighting for her affection is very cute; but i have never even concidered this one, because there is no world in my mind in which between AJ and RD competing for someone's romantic affections (specialy rarity) that applejack wouldn't win by a landslide everytime, lmao. I'm sorry to rainbow dash fans but the girl is tragicaly self centered and nigh charmless; but i definitely see the potential on what you mean! (also ive recently discovered that Rainbow had closer to rarity's personality on g3 which is very fun) Though hey, i see the potential you mean! its a cute trio. (rarijack has made me mentally ill though i love it too much. 20 pages in to writing a shrek1 but its rarijack fic and i'm not stopping) Okay now the case with startrixburst is an peculiar one, because although sunburst is def one of the best male characters in the show, thats also an incredibly low bar, so i never really thought of it; i do find it funny for a failpolycule of unicorns centered around the biggest failgirl of all time, starlight tho. Worth stating i never paid much mind to the childhood friends backstory because it pissed me off that starlights backstory is "i was traumatized bc i was inconvenienced as a kid and now i'll make it everyones problem" its hard to salvage a character after such a weak ass backstory. But hey, it does seem to come naturaly to make this polycule trio, i aint got nothin against it! (lord knows the startrix dynamic is impecable though) Okay in the case of chrysarmordance, this might be my favorite of all three because like. i thought of how bland shining and cadance's relationship was on the show, then i thought of how simple Cadance and chrysalis would be, but if you stick her boy in the middle; suddenly something really fucking funny happens. Whether its two beings of love arguing over 1 white boy, or if its Shining getting cucked by a bug monster, the entire thing becomes fucking hilarious, with such a potential for hilarious jokes. Alright imma do something i normaly wouldnt do and show some disjointed notes of a multiverse story i'm writing because it's pertinent to this ship and also fucking hilarious.

Okay, hear me out:

So this episode / song from MLP. If you're familiar with it, you know that the premise is the Mane Six are off having a wonderfully successful friendship retreat and reflecting on how happy they are for their friendships with each other, but meanwhile, Starlight and Trixie are back home in a lot of trouble because Starlight has been literally bottling up her frustrations with Trixie all day until they're accidentally released, infecting a trio of nearby ponies and causing them to act on that anger and frustration in Starlight's place. The Mane Six end up failing their retreat because they were so distracted talking about how perfect their friendships are, and Starlight ends up only able to get the trio who are attacking Trixie under control by expressing her frustrations herself. Moral of the episode is friendships aren't perfect and it's better to talk about problems than ignore them and let them fester until they're out of control, yada yada, anyway.

Trolls.

Specifically, Poppy and Viva, and the Brozone Bros. I think it goes without saying that Poppy and Viva would fit into the Mane Six's roles. They're both the types to think their bond as sisters is just perfect and nothing can go wrong, especially after all they went through during Band Together. They've moved past their issues, and now everything is going to be perfect until the end of time! Simple as that! Except, obviously, life isn't that simple.

Meanwhile, the Bros taking on Starlight and Trixie's storyline. Now, one thing I didn't mention earlier is that one of Starlight's main motivations for bottling up her emotions is that she's scared of losing her closest friend because of them. I think this applies perfectly to the Bros, because, after the events of Band Together, they're all probably on edge and worried about being the one to accidentally start another fight and cause them to split up all over again. As such, really any of the brothers could take on Starlight's role for that reason alone. But there's one other factor that makes me tend towards one specific brother to take on that role--and no, it's not Branch.

The thing with Branch, along with JD, Clay, and Bruce, is that they're all very open about their frustrations. The three older brothers are at each other's throats constantly once they're all together in the movie, and Branch doesn't hesitate to tell them all off and storm out when they've hurt him. The only brother who we haven't really seen act on anger, and as a matter of fact is seen trying to dissipate the other brothers' fights, is Floyd.

Floyd is the sensitive one. He's the quiet, shy, sweet one. He's understanding, he's never angry, he's always going to be the voice of reason. His very role in the band/family is to bottle up his emotions.

Speaking from experience, there's only so long you can keep up that kind of facade before you're just going to snap under the pressure of it all and lose your shit.

So, yeah. Floyd takes on Starlight's role, getting progressively more and more annoyed with his brothers but trying to keep it under wraps, only to ultimately, inevitably fail. Honestly, while it might make more sense for one of the three older brothers to take on Trixie's role, and he the one person his anger is ultimately directed towards, I honestly like the idea better of that role belonging to Branch. After all, Floyd and Branch are meant to get along the best of the brothers--but that certainly doesn't mean they won't have their issues, too. And maybe Branch is too excited to have his favorite brother back to be willing to acknowledge those problems right now, resulting in Floyd's annoyance with him.

Tl;dr: Just let Floyd lose his shit. Just this once, let him blow off some steam. He deserves it, as a treat.

the following is an excerpt from my new ATLA aang is aaged up AU fanfic!! (or at least, a teaser from the upcoming update on wednesday) (!!!!) (so excited bc u guys seemed to really like the first ch and left so many lovely comments!!

i present to you, a little sample of ch2 of "the teenager in the iceberg"!!!

The trio flew on through the sunset, until Tui rose above them, pulling the colour out of the sky as if she were weaving onyx black strands of soft wool into the most beautiful of tapestries. Katara settled on her back, tugging her fur lined overcoat closer, huddled against Sokka, who was in turn huddled against Aang for warmth. Moonlight and starlight bathed the three in enough light that neither Katara nor Aang could sleep, although Sokka seemed to be snoring away just fine. After a few hours of fruitless attempts to slip into dreamland, both Katara and Aang rose from their respective spots beside Sokka and moved to sit in the driver’s bench.

“Trouble sleeping too, huh?” Aang cocked a grin, tilting his head to Katara. She kept her eyes fixed upwards, trained on the moon and the stars, worried that if she looked away, she’d end up staring into his eyes like a weirdo.

“I always feel so awake with the moon’s light on me. Sleeping under the stars has never really been a thing that works. It’s too energising, too… too much. It’s hard to explain.”

“No, no… I get it. I feel the same way in a windstorm, all those breezes and gusts of wind, it feels… exhilarating.” She watched through her peripheral vision as he looked up at the moon. “In times of war, I think we all tend to forget how spiritual bending is at its core. I’d say it’s a good thing that you’re in touch enough with the origins of your abilities to feel the moon’s pull tug at you just as much as it does on the ocean.” Katara raised an eyebrow at the cheesy sincerity, and he chuckled in response. “I’m serious! Out of all the nations, Airbenders have the highest rate of benders, and I’ve always felt like it’s because of how much we connect to the spiritual aspect of all of this. We feel our element through our veins, we acknowledge its origins, we treat it as a sacred art.”

Katara nodded, puzzling it all over. “I wish I’d gotten to learn bending as a child properly, the way you did, with the stories of its origins and the teaching of precise bending forms.”

Aang’s brows wrinkled at this. “You- you didn’t get a teacher? But… weren’t you the one to break me out of the iceberg?”

“You’re looking at the last Waterbender of the Southern Tribe.” She sighed, hanging her head. “Everything I know about my bending was either made up through trial and error, or scraped together by bits and pieces of the few bending scrolls my tribe held on to. We’ve never believed in building fortresses and kingdoms the way the Northern Tribe does, and so, when the Fire Nation raids began… our waterbending numbers just continued to dwindle as they were defeated and taken to Spirits know where.” She bit her lip, trying desperately to steady her voice.

“That's… that’s how my mother passed. I was there, in the tent, when she was…killed.”

So...

WE'RE BACK AGAIN LADS- BUT THIS TIME IT'S A BOY.

Even as this Cradle burns down... From the Ash I will Rise once Again. - Finale Quote

This is William Rivers (Full name drop!) which has appeared on the blog before! Now you may ask me- "Realm? Why is William a Magical Boy now?"

Well one- He is a Magical Girl- because calling him that makes him scream- and Two- It's complicated.

William pretty much as the same back story and personality as Innocent Ash- I just never gave Ash a civilian form or an actual name. So when I did make William- I realized "Wait... this is just Innocent Ash."

So two became one and here we are. I'm not going to mention the certain flower girl toy mascot horror game- because unlike Claire, William was pretty much fully formed- just no name. Or some smaller details I've ironed out now. I have no 'legal' basis to tag this under Poppy Playtime- (Maybe I do? This situation is strange)

However- for the sake of being fair- and because I want to- Thank you @realizinau for indirectly helping me fully realize the OC. (I also think you maybe want to see this? It has a bunch of extra William lore if you just take out the Magical stuff and ignore the other characters mentioned- Great work by the way as always Vis, hope your vacation/trip is going well!)

As before with Claire- who if you have missed you can find HERE-

Below are some details, and under that is a short story telling you more of how he got to this point- In "We who are Blessed Under Starlight" specifically.

William is a Magical Boy by the name of Innocent Ash. He's rather young, one of three of what the Blessed call "The little Trio" which make up him, his adopted sister Swan, and Alice's adopted brother Mako. The three of them are pretty much inseparable (which took William's survivor guilt getting addressed- but more on that later)

William fights with a short sword on occasion- really just when he needs to. His main way of fighting is with his power- FIRE. Be it burning, destroying, or even warding things away, William fights like a fire bender who just wants to see the world burn.

His flames are sadly pretty one note- except for detail that he has almost always perfect control on what his flames will burn. He has also found that changing their color is pretty easy, not that it does much. This has lead to some... creative applications of fire. (One time, he was bored, so he tired to make a normal tree look like Christmas cam early. He is now asked to make flame decoration whenever he can. It's an art form at this point even though William isn't an artist.) (He does it for Swan.)

William is a quiet kid, who's rather smart but that comes from just how perceptive he is. He notices things. Be it moods or information others may miss, he always seems to catch that stuff first. It doesn't help his natural paranoia, but when it's needed- he uses it. (He... has had a lot of bad experiences in orphanages. Even now it clings to him. The feeling of someone trying to hurt him, right behind him- even when it's nothing at all)

William is an Orphan. His parents died in a home fire when he was young. Unluckily, his entire life has been accidents and hardship like that. From one orphanage that met the same fate his parent home did, to one who's entire child populace made his time there hell. He sadly had grow accustomed to wearing a mask- seeming meek and not worth the abusers time... even if it didn't always work. (The only time he's snapped is when his life was really in danger- when things actually got violent- those would also lead to him moving orphanages.) (The only time he harmed someone without violence... is when an older man who worked at the orphanage he was staying at at the time tried to touch him. William had to be dragged away from the man's blood face.)

As said before, he's the adopted brother of Swan- who's parent's took him in after he finally began to trust that he won't be the one person left again- that he won't be left alone again. Even if his new parents love him... he still has trouble sharing that back. He isn't trying to replace what he lost... but he has to tell himself that.

Swan's parents adopted him when he went back into school... there was an entire thing with the law trying to throw him back into the foster system- Claire and Zaken both has paid for a really good lawyer to help win custody and deal with the whole issue. (Later he learned that why it was so hard was that the Orphanage he was last at was only keeping kids so the government paid them- and was trying to keep it hush hush.)

William loves reading. It's his favorite pass times. He usually spends that time helping Swan to read. He cannot lie he doesn't enjoy teach now and again. (It's even better when it's all three of them. Him, Swan, and Mako.)

He has a weird bond with Kaito. Both of them once living on the streets- they kind of get on well together. He does not like when Kaito goes full gremlin and starts stealing stuff. (He usually has to be the one to place everything back. He just remembers where things were easily.)

As much as his entire brand is fire- he likes all of his drinks cold. Give him hot chocolate and he will place it in the freezer to cool it down quickly. Several other of the Blessed have issues with this. Swan emulates him to their collective horror.

William has periods where he just needs to be alone- be in silence and calm down. Over stimulation can get to him easy. Best one can do is give him that. (He tries to deal with it sometimes, pretend it isn't happening. Claire can always somehow tell though. She always makes sure he gets the room he needs)

William Rivers Story:

William believed himself to be Cursed for the longest time.

He had evidence for it. Just look at his life.

When he was only 5- he had to watch his parents burn alive in their home. When he was growing up he had to be tossed from orphanage to orphanage because he caused 'problems.'

Few wanted to adopt him- none ever fully committed after hearing everything he's been in. They said he was too quiet, too antisocial, too cold.

Maybe what else they called him was true... but he was never cold. He only learned how to hide the flames, hid the emotion. To put on a mask and seem like he was only part of the background. It helped, stopped at least the other children from bothering him- either in misguided blame or genuine attempts at friendship only missing the endurance to break through the shell- so he kept doing it.

He was the center of tragedy. No matter what, he always came out fine. He was always the lone person to survived unscathed. Eventually, he believed that to be true. That no matter what, he would be the only one to survive- only one to live. And so he would be alone. That is what he internalized during his time through those dark days.

One day, a Star had fell into a nearby forest. William, who had nothing better to do, followed to where he saw whatever fell from the sky above. Starlight seeped into him as he stepped forward towards the light in the clearing, clinging to his form.

His mind grew cloudy as his skin began to heat. Flames struck and clung to nearby trees. Soon, this once living forest became kindle to a flame unending.

And yet- William did not. Even as fire threatened to make him one with it- he stepped forward and reached for the Star-

The flames that once ate at the green plant life around him snuffed out in an instant, his body back to as it was before he stepped into this place- now with his Matrix, a bright shining Flame above what he knew was meant to be ash, hovering in front of him.

William, with his new found powers, ran. He lived on the streets, away from the constant hurt that came from the places that tried to board him.

One day, a Stranger appeared, and promised him he would grant him his most wanted wish- if only he were to gather Starlight until his Matrix was bursting.

Unannounced to the Stranger, he chose his lie poorly. William, despite it all, never truly wished "For his parents to come back to his arms." They were gone, and he had accepted that.

And so William distrusted The Man who Thought Himself God from day one.

Sadly for William, others did not share his worry, blindly trusting that horrible man's promises. And so- he was brought into the fight orchestrated by the one who sought to claim God's throne.

He did not trust any other Blessed, and did not fight against the Cursed. He defended himself when those who realized the other Blessed carried far more Starlight then a normal Cursed ever would. He ran when the one who could freeze others with just a touch approached him-

And again and again and again.

She wouldn't stop. She even started to do it outside of her costume- with no weapon and powers weakened. He didn't understand.

So he watched her.

He watched how she fought not for some stupid Wish... but for the sake of protecting others. How she had a smile when she saved that child from being eaten by the Cursed teddy bear. How she laughed in joy when she finally beat the tainted master of the towns local Dojo- before undoing as much corruption as she could- not thinking to harvest the poor soul for even a second.

Watching became brief interactions. Where he would ask a question- and she would answer as well as she could.

That too turned into him aiding in fighting- no protecting people. And soon he met others like her- Like Alice. (That was her name... why did it take him so long to ask?)

Then... he met the girl who would become his sister.

Later... he met the boy who he and she would call their brother.

Slowly but surely... he learned he had wandered into a family. He was afraid. Afraid they would die, and leave him... But they proved him wrong.

Again and Again and Again-

They lived. They survived. And they all went back home together in the end.

Even when it got hard. Even when the world itself chose to challenge them- to try and slaughter them as they tried to do what was right-

They did not leave him.

He isn't alone- and won't ever be again.

Gender and Sexuality in Sailor Moon

⚠️SPOILER WARNING⚠️

Everyone by now knows that Sailor Moon isn’t shy about its queer characters….(Except if you’ve only watched the DiC dub. My goodness, what’s up with the whole “cousin” thing?)…so let’s give these characters some love!

For this post specifically, I’m going to focus on Usagi, Haruka, Michiru, the Sailor Starlights, and Mamoru. Yes, I do love and adore Kunzite, Zoisite, and Fish Eye, but I would need to do a lot more research on them if I were to discuss them.

First, I’m going to bring out the elephant in the room (I love this phrase so much). Yes, Mamoru, otherwise known as Tuxedo Mask, has been portrayed as queer. This can be seen in “Sailor Moon R: The Movie.” In this movie, he is shown to have very close past relations with Fiore, an alien who found himself on Earth as a child and befriended young Mamoru. Though it is never mentioned straight up (like many of these character’s relationships), it is shown that there was definitely a strong bond between the two- and this does not include Fiore’s obsession with Mamoru throughout the film.

To further prove my point, my Roman Empire has to be one of the English voice actors of the movie saying straight up that Mamoru and Fiore had a queer relationship during a panel (this was a feature on the movie’s DVD. My little twelve year old brain couldn’t get that memory out of my head.) I could only find snippets of the talk online but the whole thing is available if you have the DVD!

Next I’ll talk about the trio that has been itching my mind ever since I finished the Sailor Stars arc. The Sailor Starlights are three characters who present male in their civilian form, but when transformed into Sailor Guardians, present as women.

In the manga they are noted to be referred as women no matter how they present themselves, but in the anime they are referred to as however they are presenting at that given moment.

I find this to be very cool because let’s face it, it was the 90’s. Name a show that was so straight up about gender expression at this level (no literally, please do, I’m curious.)

We can never forget the iconic couple, Michiru and Haruka. Their relationship has never been outright called out (like in terms of them saying “oh this is my girlfriend!”) but it is no secret that the two are romantically involved.

In the Sailor Moon stage play, in fact, two actresses were able to sneak in a kiss..

Focusing more on Haruka, she is a gender nonconforming character. She doesn’t mind being called a man or woman, and dresses in masculine clothing. Her style and charm has definitely caught the eye of every sailor guardian, especially Usagi..

Usagi has always been played off as a hopeless romantic, and her romances don’t just focus on guys! Yes, Mamoru is her soulmate, but we can never forget her moments with Haruka and Seiya.

I love Sailor Moon and how it’s not afraid to protray LGBTQ+ characters, especially for being in the 90’s. Let me know who I missed and more about Kunzite, Zoisite, and Fish Eye if you can!!! I’m rewatching the first season so maybe I can get more info on them.

Okaaaay let's do star charts and signals after dark!

Hi hi Lexi, thank you for the ask <33 (As if I haven't subjected you to all of these and then some /lh)

First up, let's talk Star Chart. One of the many listener squared rarepairs created by me and @mr-laveau (It's fun, y'all gotta try it sometime okay /srs /lh). In short: Star Chart refers to the pairing of Avior and two Starlight OCs, Sherlock (Veau's) and Marcel (Mine).

I can hear some of you asking, "PK, how does that work? You can't have two Starlights, the story wouldn't make sense." To that I say, think bigger. How that pairing works (and many listener squared rarepairs) is one of the two versions of a listener takes the "canon" position. The other is adapted to either enhance or play around with canon. Suspend your disbelief for a moment and imagine that somehow, all three of them got pulled into the meridian. In this case, Marcel is the Starlight that the meridian wanted. However, Sherlock is the one that tries to escape the first time. As it goes in canon, it backfires, but now Avior and Marcel have to watch this person they fell in love with barely moving and just out of reach. When Sherlock gets brought back and they realize he's got no memory of before, you get the funkiest flavor of added hidden truths and subtle paranoia and pining.

Marcel ultimately merges with the meridian, talks with the Sovereigns, they all get out, y'all know how Sovereign State is going as of late. I'm biased towards this ship because Starlight is one of my favorite listeners, Avior is one of my favorite d(a)emons, and Sovereign State is one of my favorite storylines. This ship scratches a specific part of my brain by expanding on so many elements of each of those things.

Now, Signals After Dark? Pairing involving Vincent, Ayl ("Lovely"), and Maia ("Darlin").

The condensed version of this is Maia and Ayl had a chance meeting when they were both a lot younger, Vincent and Maia had a brief fling years before he meets Ayl (ended mutually because it wasn't the vibe at the time), and eventually the three cross paths once Maia is back in Dahlia after Quinn's initial attack on her unempowered friend.

This ship is one of my personal favs because you've got:

Maia finding comfort in a space completely separated from the pack (which is a breath of relief in some ways)

Pushing back on Vincent's "golden child"/"model prince" reputation by having him question what lengths he'd go to look after the ones he loves

Sprinkles of Maia being tripped up by being that close with another vampire after Quinn/given all that Quinn did to her (Bonus: It gets even more difficult post-Inversion /lh)

And some background Sam/David action /lh /pos

This trio scratches my brain is such a lovely way (pun not intended). I'm very biased towards making rarepairs with Maia (my other favorite listener alongside Marcel), but I think it's also an interesting exploration of Vincent as a character. What if?

What if, as Iruma’s demonic adoptive mother, you raised human Iruma from a baby to a teenager (about to enter high school) as a single mother... but something was missing (besides a father figure). Having been raised in the netherworld after you found him squirreled away in a tree, he had to watch EVERYONE around him have something he didn’t, flight. Yes, it was possible for demons to be born without wings but those cases were split by nearly six generations. So it was hard on the two of you. This was only enhanced by the fact you two lived way out in the wilderness where you had taught him everything he needed to know to survive, but being “country bumkins” it further estranged him from kids his age and you worried so...

As it turns out, demons (beings naturally affinitive with magic and the like), when under a lot of stress (from worrying about their spawn), make a wish...

Sometimes, against better judgement, they might just come true.

The sun hadn’t risen. You were pulling an all nighter. A bad habit that never left you. You started thinking about a conversation you had with your son.

‘Mom... What’s it like to fly?’

You paused before answering with, ‘It’s like being set loose, you know how sometimes you’re so happy or so upset that you just... go on a run, feel the wind brushing past you? That’s what flying’s like except it’s like the wind brushes past ALL of you, and laws like gravity hold no meaning.’

After a beat you ask...

‘Why do you ask?’

‘Uh... I- I know what it’s like to be flown around but uh... uh... I was just wondering.’

Iruma had to get a little better at lying... though, maybe it was because you were his mom that you noticed a little easier than most.

He was not, in fact, “just wondering”. That expression on his face was one you saw pretty often in other children.

Disappointment. In this scenario it had a more crushing effect than usual.

And though you try to fly with him, as he enjoyed it, such activities weren’t as frequent as maybe either of you hoped. As you sigh, you gaze out the window, at the milky white moon, he night sky almost as bright as day from all the starlight, you feel something in your chest shift.

Chuckling at how bitter it was you say,

“If he could fly, fly as far as he’d like, whenever he’d like...”

“To see new places, meet new people...”

“Find more meaning than just “survive” in this life...”

You don’t finish and opt to go to bed. You had work tomorrow...

Work was... fun, more or less.

On the plus side there was never a dull moment. On the downside....

There was never a dull moment...

Working at a sweets shop was a little out of sorts for you, but you were great at dealing with customers who were a little crankier than others.

Strangely enough, today three demons walk in and take a seat at one of your tables. One was obviously dragged here by the other two, so you opt to take a calmer approach.

“Good Afternoon, my name is Y/n and I’ll be serving you today. Here are some menus, I’ll be right over there if you need me. For now, can I help you with anything?”

The red haired cat demon spoke up then, “I’m actually here to pick up an order.”

And so, business continues as per usual, nothing too difficult. You learn that these demons worked closely with Sullivan, one of the three greats, at Babyls in the high school division and came here after hearing about the sweets.

They ended up staying there a long while. And as you were leaving you get a phone call from Iruma’s school.

“MS. Y/N! IT’S AN EMERGENCY THERE’S SOMETHING WRONG WITH IRUMA!”

And you freeze, ice plunges your heart into your belly, a lump bunching up in your chest.

“I’ll be there as soon as I can!”

But as you get ready to fly, rushing out the door, almost bumping into the trio from earlier as you briefly apologize, wings thrusting you off the ground.

You drop, scraping your limbs as your body hits pavement. And a blood curdling scream leaves your lips as you writhe in pain.

Sharp, ice cold, like a needle entering your back and then pulling through the flesh as if trying to engrave words on your back. You can’t think, you can’t see, you can’t breathe. You only vaguely register that someone was gently holding you, restraining you so you didn’t twist something the wrong way.

“P-pleAsE... help. my Son. I... ru... ma....”

He was still at school, there was still an emergency, there was no guarantee you’d make it, it felt like you were dying!

There was no guarantee these three would help either though...

Low ranked... moderately high ranked... why should they...

And with a great fear in your heart, skin ice cold and clammy despite the gentle and warm hold on you, you black out.

‘Am I... dead?’

There was a light ringing in your ears, and through bleary eyes you peer up at something... no... someone long and lanky standing by your bedside. It almost looked like...

“Sul... livan...”

“Hmm~? You’re awake?”

Your eyes drift shut... before ‘snapping’ open, really it was more like you fought to keep them open. Because despite this strange situation, strange room, strange bed, and an ever so powerful figure at your side, you were worried about your son.

“I... ru... ma...”

“He’s safe. And so are you. Just, close your eyes and get a bit of rest. All will be said and dealt with later.”

And so you do.

The next time you wake up, there’s a gentle breeze kissing your nose. The room, a soft color with a nice dark wood floor, was sparsely furnished save for some bare necessities.

From your place on the bed, propped up by what had to have been at least ten pillows, you catch sight of an open window and a door, both leading to outside.

But what was the most important was the mass of blue at your side.

“Iruma...” your voice was hoarse, dehydrated from sleeping so long...

But still, he heard it. As his head snapped up to gaze at you in disbelief, a face that held memories of despair and desperation scrunched up into tears...

“Mom...” His voice was shaky, watery, and you couldn’t help but be a bit surprised before you smiled reassuringly, you were alive, you were fine, and so happy that he was ok, that he was here with you.

You could only hold him as he cried.

At 13 years old, your son experienced pain like no other. You’d go on to understand that, there had been an instability of mana in the netherworld that caused a rip in the border between the human realm and the netherworld, releasing large amounts of mana previously a part of maintaining that border. And that mass amount of mana, and a strong desire, was how you lost your wings.

Where is Lunafox?

If you ask any of the three members (Serena Knight, Leaf Bailey-Moon, and Lily Hecking for those not in the know) of this chart-topping band, you’ll get an assortment of cheeky answers. “Right here,” “In the moment,” “Hell if I know.”

Truth is, despite not releasing any music in over a year, it’s not like the trio hasn’t been busy with their own pursuits. The trio’s hiatus began when bassist Lily announced she was expecting a baby with her superstar beau Chris Bevins. She gave birth to a daughter named Juliana earlier this year.

Pianist Leaf has mostly worked behind the scenes. She participated in the production of her mother Octavia Moon’s first album in 10 years, and has songwriting credits on multiple albums in the top 100 on Billboard. Never forgetting about her fans, she connects with them often via livestreams.

Lead singer Serena won a Starlight Accolade for featuring on Lil Raz B’s chart topping hit “Simdustry Baby.” She also began an on and off relationship with rapper Emoja Bat. The pair are currently off, but when they’re on the paparazzi follows their every move. Serena’s social media following has eclipsed her bandmates and she’s nabbed many lucrative sponsorships. Sources to say she’s made more as an influencer than she has as a singer.

Fans worried that the band would never reunite, but they need not worry anymore. The trio is currently holed up in Oasis Springs working on new material.

When I ask if they’re releasing a new album, Leaf says, “Perhaps.” But while they are tight lipped on exactly what the project is, they all have thoughts on what drove them back into the studio.

“It’s wild,” Serena says, “’living the life we’re living while also waking up to more bad news everyday. We have to write, to get everything out of heads and try to make sense of it.”

“I stay up late after Juli’s in bed coming up with melodies,” Lily adds. “It’s like a compulsion. If I don’t go to my home studio, I can’t sleep.”

Without even telling their management the girls planned this trip to Oasis Springs in their group chat. It began as a getaway, but it quickly became a long slumber party/recording session.

“Sitting right here in this studio with these girls is what makes me happiest,” Leaf says. “We’ve written so many songs at 3AM eating gummi bears and drinking way too much Diet Coke. Everything from ballads to dance songs. Being together, it just makes sense.”

The band is truly back together.

When can we expect to hear these songs? “Obviously soon,” Serena says. “You’re here interviewing us for a cover story.”
