Multishippers and neutral-ship, proship or wincestiel peeps

I wonder if people's preferences for destiel or for wincest (taboo/ick aside) have anything to do with their interpretation of Dean as a character.

I think Dean occupies very different roles in each of those ships. Explanation below.

So.....

This is really only for multishippers, wincestiel peeps and pro- or neutral-ship peeps.

Obviously if you're an anti-ship person, your opinion is self-evident. That's cool! I respect that. If you're an anti, you can just sit this one out :)

Explanation of Dean's characterization and relationship dynamics under the cut:

Destiel:

Cas pulled Dean out of hell and watches over Dean so he is the protector and Dean is the protected. He is a literal angel so he is in a position of relative power. However, he rebelled for Dean so Dean unwittingly holds more power over Cas' heart. Dean hates himself and sees himself as a monster, but Cas thinks that he is the most beautiful, pure, loving human in the world.

Wincest:

Dean is the big brother who always took care of his baby brother, so Dean is the protrctor and Sam is the protected. Their upbringing and age difference gave them a dynamic which places Dean in a position of relative power. But Dean would do anything for Sam and give him anything he wants. Between Sam and Dean, I think Sam is the more likely one to see himself as innately wrong and unclean. But Dean still thinks he's perfect. Nothing will ever dilute or corrupt Dean's love for Sam.

Dean is afraid to admit he wants to be held, but Cas has always broken past his defenses

It started after sex, they had been worn out and tired. Cas hadn’t wanted to get up for a towel and Dean had been too exhausted to even move a muscle. He had been nodding off already, not noticing or caring about the mess between his legs.

So Cas had decided that it would be a problem for morning them and had nodded off as well, Dean held tightly in his arms.

That night both had slept without nightmares and had awoken well rested, tangled up in each others arms. They didn’t really talk about it and only cuddled after sex, so Dean could pretend he slept better because the action had worn him out instead of facing the fact that he felt safe, warm and protected when Cas held him.

But then his stupid body had to betray him and soon he found himself longing to be cuddled, to be cradled, to be held, to be cared for.

Which was stupid, because he was a man and he shouldn’t want it.

It had taken him long enough to be comfortable with him liking to take it up the ass, but that was pleasure, the body wants what the body wants, but cuddles that was a whole other story. So he kept it to himself, deciding to push it down.

He did push for more sex, trying to seduce his angel every night, not just for the pleasure it would bring in the moment, but also for the comfort that came in the aftercare.

When Dean would lie down, tried and spent and Cas, his beautiful Cas, would carefully wipe him down, while he held him in his strong arms. He would rub Deans back, card his hands through his hair and whisper sweet nothings in Deans ears until he fell asleep.

But nothing good can last, so after two weeks of trying to get cuddled every night, with a lot of success actually, the fun was over.

Cas confronted Dean one night after a bad hunt. Dean had wanted a hug, so in light of past events he had kissed his angel the moment they got into their room. Cas had kissed back for a moment, but then pushed Dean back and said: “Dean, not tonight, okay? I’m tired and so are you. These past weeks we’ve had sex almost every night and I’m not complaining, but lets just lie down, just for tonight. Sex can come tomorrow.”

Then he had pushed Dean backwards gently until the hunter was sitting on the back, a torn look on his face. Cas saw and knelt down in front of him with a concerned expression. He softly laid his hand on Deans cheek and asked: “Dean, are you alright? What’s the matter?”

Dean blushed, heat crept up his face and lit up his cheeks. He noticed and firmly looked down to the ground, not meeting Cas’ eyes. This made the angel frown even deeper and with a bit of fear in his voice he said: “Come on, Dean. Talk to me. What’s bothering you? Don’t lie, I know something is. Just talk to me.”

Dean shook his head, acknowledging he could hear Cas and hadn’t drifted off, which relieved the angel as well as worrying him further. He pushed the worry down and said: “Why don’t you want to talk, sweetheart?”

At the pet name Dean met his eyes, Cas rarely used pet names, but when Dean had a rough night or felt alone, he would let one slip to let Dean know Cas cared and he was his.

Dean looked away and bit his bottom lip, then he quietly said: “It’s embarrassing.”

Castiel’s gaze softened as he grabbed Deans chin to force the other to make eye contact as he said: “Nothing you say or want is embarrassing. You can trust me. I love you and nothing can change that.”

With his words Deans eyes grew wide, Cas tried to tell him as much as he could, but Dean always seemed to forget how worthy Cas thought he was and how much the angel loved him.

Dean took a deep breath and said: “When we- when we have sex, you hug me after, you hold me like you- like you never want to let go and you tell me sweet things and- and- and it’s just- it’s just so damn nice, but it’s girly to want that and I’m not girly.”

“Oh, Dean,” Cas sighed, he was glad he knew what was tormenting his lover, “it’s okay to want certain things, it doesn’t have to be girly if you want to be cuddled. It’s okay if you want that. You are allowed to want that.”

“But- but you don’t want it, I mean you never do it unless you’re blissed out and I know how you let go when we hug and I don’t want to force you to do something so dumb, just for me and my stupid feelings, who decided to want this,” Dean blubbered.

He was cut off by two arms pulling him forward into an embrace. Cas held him tight and whispered into his hair: “Dean, I only let go so fast because you don’t want to pull any attention to it, so I assumed you didn’t like them. I didn’t want to push you, but you don’t fight it after sex, so I just kept doing it, for me, but you don’t have to have sex for you to be loved. I love holding you, feeling you in my arms, your heartbeat under my palm, your soft snores against a pillow we share, our legs tangled together. I love cuddling you and I will every night if you let me.”

He could hear Deans shaky breaths against his collar and then a soft: “I’d like that.”

It was all Cas needed before he was gently stripping Dean out of his clothes and putting him into soft pajamas. Dean let Cas do it, sitting there in a comforted daze.

As Cas un- and redressed him he kept up a stream of soft praises that Dean let wash over him.

Once Cas had them both in soft clothing he moved them so that they were lying under the covers. Both on their sides, Castiel’s chest flush against Deans back.

Cas had one arm slung over Deans torso, pressing his hand against Deans heart, his other arm under the pillow and, with that, their heads. Dean held Cas’ hand against his heart with both hands, legs tangled together with Cas’.

He looked peaceful with quiet breaths leaving his mouth. Castiel was pretty sure the hunter had fallen asleep already, tired from the hunt, but just when Cas had decided to let his eyes slip close he heard: “Thank you, Cas. I love you too,” before the quiet breaths turned into soft snores.

From that night on, Dean was the little spoon every night. Cas felt like he could protect what he needed, provide comfort where words could not and Dean felt like he was protected, like he could let his guard down and it would be okay.

It wasn’t perfect, but Dean knew that this was a close to heaven as he would get and he wouldn’t let it slip from his fingers.
