Villain - Chapter 5: Breakout Band
Summary:
Dick teams up with Roy, Harley, and Ivy to break Jason out of Arkham.
TW: Death, Violence, Flashbacks, Blood, and Swearing. lemme know if I missed anything!

POV of Dick Grayson, approximately thirty minutes after the last chapter because that’s how much time I wrote this in after uploading chapter 5.
I’m sitting on the roof of the manor, thinking. Why would Bruce do this? Why now, of all times? When I’d finally gotten my little brother back?
I can feel tears form in my eyes. Jason must be so scared right now, he must think he’s all alone again…
A hot tear runs down my cheek as I bite my lip.
“You always cried too much,” A familiar voice pipes up from behind me. Wiping my eyes, I turn around to see my old friend Roy Harper climbing onto the roof. Smiling slightly, I got up to give him a hug.
He wraps his arm around me and whispers, “He’ll be okay, Dickie, he’s the strongest person I know.”
Then why do you sound like you’re trying to convince yourself?
Pulling away, he sits down beside me, his green eyes meeting mine. “So, why’d you call me, of all people, to help? Why not, like, Superboy or someone?”
“Because you’re not just my friend, you’re Jay’s friend too. He trusts you.”
“Yeah, friend .” His smile fades slightly. My eyebrows furrow, but I decide not to pry.
“Well, I was going to call Star too, but she’s off-world with her sister, and I have no idea how to contact Artemis or Bizarro.” I shrugged. “But it’s okay, we’ve got a pretty good team here.”
Roy raises an eyebrow. “Just you and me? We’re gonna break into Arkham, one of the most heavy-security prisons, all by ourselves?”
I laugh a little. “Well, rogues break in and out of that place on the regular! Which is exactly why we’re gonna ask one of them for help!”
“Wait, what? ” Roy’s confused. “Do you even trust them? Why would a rogue help us? If anything they’d be happy Red Hood’s locked away for good—”
“Chill, Roy,” I smile. “We’re asking an ex-rogue for help. Harley Quinn! She’s broken out of that place about a billion times, surely she knows her way around there. Plus, she went straight-ish over the past few years, she was even batgirl for a few days.”
Roy snorts. “Straight-ish? Isn’t she dating that plant chick?”
“You know what I meant!” I slap him playfully on the arm. “Now come on, we gotta go find her.”
“So you want me to risk my life, help you break into a heavily secure facility, go to the cell right by my crazy ex’s, break out your baby brother, kill a couple guards, get Hood out, break a few hundred laws, and bring him back to you, when I’m finally starting to gain the police’s trust?!” Harley Quinn questions us with a pointed stare.
“Well, yeah,” I mumble, “Except for the killing guards part. Plus, Arsenal and I will be helping you.”
She stares at us for a few more seconds before answering, “HELL YEAH! ‘Course Aunty Harley’ll help you, birdie!”
“Harls, think about this,” Ivy spoke up from the corner. “What if you get caught?”
“We won’t get caught,” Roy answered for her. “It’s a simple in and out mission. Little to no damage, if possible.”
“Well, that won’t be possible,” Harley says. “The only way in is to break the walls down.” She turns to look at her girlfriend.
Ivy stares back at her for a second before realising what she’s talking about. “No. No. Absolutely not. No way!” She replies sternly.
Harley jumps off the table she’s sitting on and clings to Ivy, making her best puppy dog eyes and giving a pout. “Pwease, baby?”
Ivy gazes into her eyes like a lovestruck simp before finally looking away and huffing. “Fine. I’ll use my plants to break through the walls.”
“Yay!” Harley spins around excitedly. I smile at her gratefully. “Ooh, we need a team name! What about Breakout Band?”
“We are not calling ourselves Breeakout Band!” Ivy tries to say, but Roy speaks over her, hyping Harley up.
“WHOO! BREAKOUT BAND!!!” He yells as Herley cheers.
“Great, now we can start planning!” I say, pulling out a map of Arkham Asylum.
We’re coming, Jay, I think, hoping he can somehow magically hear me. Just hang on for a bit.

R. Stepanov/A. Urrea tried to step up the play in the second set as they got more aggressive, trying to go after T. Farjat/G. Bueno's net games. However, the latter started to pass again through their point constructions as timely as possible, which allowed them to break back as the former pair served for the second set, shifting the moment back right as they started with their balance. This allowed T. Farjat/G. Bueno to optimize their chances, converting 60% of their 5 break points while R. Stepanov/A. Urrea only converted one-sixth of their break points in the second set as they got out-paced toward the end of the match.
Besides, both pairs had distinct service game strengths throughout this match. Here, T. Farjat/G. Bueno had a slight edge on their first serves, winning 1% more of their first serve points as they had 76% first serve winning percentage than R. Stepanov/A. Urrea. On the other hand, the latter pair won 8% more second serve points by winning 53% of them than T. Farjat/G. Bueno's 43%, but it was insufficient for them to stay in the match as they double-faulted twice during the play.
Last week's San Miguel de Tucuman Challenger champion, Patrick Harper/David Stevenson, awaits as they then defeated fourth seeds Franco Roncadelli/Stefanos Sakellaridis 6-3, 6-4 in a close encounter after the latter's mouthwatering singles clash earlier to start the day. This could be one of those types of clashes that might feature an additional court coverage test, while testing their aggression in one way or another in constructing their points. Could be a fun watch for the doubles semifinal day!

Content Warning: this newsletter talks about food, if you are fasting in recognition of the holiest day of the Jewish Calendar, then please feel free to pause until tomorrow…. Ok?
And now let’s get into it: our Summer CSA ends this week! What in the world are we all supposed to eat after this week’s goodies run out? Cereal?! Hot dogs? Nightly takeout from Brownsville Butcher and Pantry? JK, As you all know our Fall CSA begins in a week, so this is certainly not the end of fresh veg for those that signed up. In fact for many of you, the fun starts next Wednesday (first FALL CSA!) when our efforts go into filling the farmstand with towers of brussel sprouts, bins of onions, trays of greens and if you are smart and gluten friendly- a fresh warm loaf of bread (via add on bread share).
And as for the fields this week, they did get a light frost two nights in a row. Some plants are toast but the majority remain and they will continue to kick around until a deep kill frost hits and the fog breaks. Truthfully, none of us expect the peppers, corn, and cherry tomatoes to stick around much longer, but while they are here, we will love them dearly and pick them with pretend Summer delight. The brassicas and other greens have no problem with these cool temps, and we have enough greenhouses growing food to keep our bellies full and happy through the Winter Solstice (and beyond?).
In other field topics, we are all impatiently waiting for the tops on the potatoes to properly dry so we can begin to dig the spud field using our fave large piece of equipment, the potato harvester- this will save an insane amount of time. We are all a little sick of hand digging and our fingernails could use a break. For real, the pain of hitting your finger nail into a potato while digging into the soil is a shock to the system for daaaaays.
But the most pressing topic to really hit today is all the food we ate together these last 17 weeks. From strawberries in June, to blueberries in July and Melon into the end of September. We ate like kings and queens! And come January, I guarantee you, the onslaught of Equinox peppers will be missed as you sip on your dried tulsi tea. Moreover, a huge shout out to all CSAers near (farmstand pick up!) and far (Eastman! The Studio! Novo Nordisk! Windsor! Brownsville!). I don’t know what the CSA means to you- is it just groceries? Is it more? But for me, the CSA gives my every week real meaning and rhythm. With the help of so many awesome hands and fellow farmers (Ray, Roy, Garnet, Claire, Denroy, Carlington, Tim, Jasper, Strong, Joe and Mike, Mrs. T and Pam), I get to curate your meals from a field! That is a huge honor and I do not take it lightly. And bottomline here, a massive cheers to you all for taking a chance on Edgewater this season, and I do hope to check in with you all again in the not too distant future.

The dressing - a mix of maple syrup, lemon juice, and olive oil, plus an optional jolt of ginger- could make anything taste good, and the salad, with its autumnal profile, works just as well in holiday menus as it does in packed weekday lunches… Add some crumbled feta if you’d like a tangy creamy element.
2 cups winter squash cut into bite size pieces
1 to 1 ½ tablespoons maple syrup or honey
3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
2 teaspoons finely grated ginger (optional)
Salt & pepper
1 small fennel, cored (also optional!)
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 large bunch of kale (stemmed and torn into bite size pieces
¼ cup crumbled feta cheese (optional)
Parsley, (chopped)
Preheat the oven to 425. Spread the squash on a baking sheet, then toss with 1 ½ tablespoons of the olive oil and sprinkle with a big pinch of salt and pepper. Roast until tender, 15-20 minutes, stirring once or twice. Cool.
Whisk together the remaining1 ½ tablespoons of olive oil, the lemon juice, maple syrup or honey, and ginger, if using, in a serving bowl. Cut the fennel (if using) into thinnest-possible shavings, preferable using a mandoline or, if not, a very sharp knife. Add the fennel and squash to the bowl with the dressing and stir to coat. Let stand for about 5 minutes, which will soften up the fennel, then add the kale and toss with your hands. Top with cheese if using and chopped parsley!
Grounding roasted roots with herbed jalapeño yogurt sauce is a beautiful and simple side dish that features a delicious sauce.
PREP TIME:15 MINS/ COOK TIME:1 HR/ TOTAL TIME:1 HR 15 MINS/ SERVINGS 4 -6
ROOTS:
1 lb carrots (5 medium), peeled and chopped into 2-inch pieces
½ lb beets (3 medium/4 small) peeled and chopped into 1-inch wedges
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 ½ teaspoons za’atar spice
sea salt and ground black pepper, to taste
YOGURT SAUCE:
1 cup mixed herbs, packed (I used parsley, dill & basil), plus extra for garnish
1 small jalapeño pepper, seeded and chopped (I left some of the seeds because I like the heat)
1 garlic clove, peeled
2 tablespoons shelled and salted pistachios, plus extra for garnish
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon lemon juice
sea salt and ground black pepper, to taste
1 cup thick non-dairy yogurt (see notes for recommendations)
Notes
I would make this a meal by serving it in a grain bowl-style setup with some cooked farro, white beans, and a big handful of chopped/baby greens per person.
I used carrots and beets, but any mixture of root vegetables you like is good. You’ll need 1 ½ pounds.
If you don’t have za’atar spice blend, that’s fine! Just use salt and pepper. The sauce is super flavourful.
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a 9x13x2 baking dish with parchment paper.
Place the chopped carrots and beets in the baking dish and toss them with the olive oil, za’atar, salt and pepper. Once the vegetables are evenly coated, spread them out into a single layer and slide the dish into the oven. Roast the vegetables for 1 hour, taking them out at the halfway point to stir them up and flip them over.
Make the herbed jalapeño yogurt sauce: In a food processor, combine the herbs, jalapeño, garlic, pistachios, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Pulse the machine a few times until everything is finely chopped, scraping down the sides of the bowl with a spatula if necessary. Add the non-dairy yogurt to the food processor and pulse until the sauce is fully combined and uniformly light green. Check the sauce for seasoning and adjust if necessary.
To serve: Spread the herbed jalapeño yogurt sauce out on the base of your serving plate. Pile the roasted root vegetables on top of the yogurt sauce.
Garnish the grounding roasted roots and herbed jalapeño yogurt sauce with extra chopped herbs and pistachios. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Heads up yall, this corn was picked on Saturday pre-frost as a just in case frost precaution. It’s great for soups or freezing for winter!
To freeze: blanch in boiling water, let cool, remove kernels, put in zip lock bag, and freeze!

sempre gostara de chuva, especialmente a de verão. gostava das gotas pesadas contra a pele quente, da risada de lian quando os dois resolviam correr pela grama do parque em dias assim, da sensação de seus pés sobre a grama molhada e mais ainda do sorriso pequeno que parecia despontar as vezes no rosto de jason quando ele achava que roy não estava olhando.
neste momento, contudo, a chuva parecia fria demais. não havia grama, só a sacada aberta de seu apartamento que tinha um piso extremamente frio e a sensação das meias encharcando-se de uma maneira extremamente desagradável, de um jeito que fazia os cabelos em sua nuca arrepiarem-se, mas a maior causa dos calafrios sentidos era, provavelmente, a perfuração em seu abdômen. ironicamente, roy mal podia sentí-lo e, naquele momento, questionava-se se isso era seu corpo entrando em choque. “— maaaaan, that’s some fucked up shit.” ele murmurou, mais para si do que para o cara que tinha absoluta certeza que havia matado, caído há alguns metros de si, perto da porta de entrada; afinal, a faca que lançara acertou bem entre seus olhos. feliz ou infelizmente, parecia que os quatro caras que derrubara eram os únicos invasores, e jason logo deveria estar ali de qualquer forma, com uma lian segura que havia passado a tarde na casa de uma amiguinha em seus braços.

ele queria viver. queria muito viver, e queria muito poder ajeitar a porcaria das calças que estava usando, porque se não jason iria descobrir que ele as roubava de vez em quando e isso só podia acabar mal.
foi então que notou a chuva parando de cair sobre seu rosto, abrindo os olhos de um verde agora quase transparente pelo choro apenas para encontrar outro par, azul e aliviado aparentemente. se permitiu rir disso, gemendo logo após pela dor sentida, a mão alheia logo sobre a sua para ajudá-lo com a ferida enquanto, a despeito da dor que agora realmente podia sentir, as bochechas esquentaram por algo próximo a embaraço e felicidade.
havia esperança, afinal.

Young Man With A Drum
It’s time to find out what exactly has been going on Roy for the past 10 years, and for that I decided to go all the way back to the 70s, to his appearances immediately after his “addiction arc” (which was really only one issue). “They Say It’ll Kill Me But They Won’t Say When” was released in October/November 1971, after which Roy had exactly 0 appearances until almost three years later. In June 1974, he finally appeared in Action Comics #436, in the Green Arrow story “Young Man With A Drum”.
Green Arrow and Black Canary have been on the trail of a crime ring, and the clues led them to this band. This is our first sight of Roy Harper in three years, and he’s playing a drum set that says “Great Frog”. Because of course he is. Note the Editor’s Note that says Roy “went out on his own” instead of “was thrown out”...I’m not sure if they’re trying to cover it up or retcon it or what but...hmm. Also apparently only a few months have passed since Oliver last saw Roy in universe, though it’s been three years since his last comic appearance.
Ollie finds stolen goods hidden in the band’s dressing room and assumes Roy must be undercover and about to close his case. He basically decides to wait around to meet Roy instead of taking the evidence and trying to make the case his, so good for him I guess? But he’s still standing around awkwardly in Roy’s dressing room which is maybe less of a good idea.
Especially if we’re assuming that Oliver kicking Roy out is still canon at this point, that’s not a very good look, Ollie... (Note: There still haven’t been any direct references to that, even though it was definitely part of canon at this time. As far as I know though, the writers for this issue had nothing to do with the GL/GA arc, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the discrepancies are a case of one set of writers doing something weird and shitty and other DC writers looking at it and saying “so we’re just gonna pretend that didn’t happen”). Unsurprisingly, Roy tells Green Arrow to butt out of his case.
Roy’s band manager/agent guy comes in to check on him before they Roy and Oliver can have any sort of conversation that would indicate what sort of relationship they’re supposed to have here. It would be kind of nice if we either got an acknowledgement of what Ollie did or a solid retcon of why they split (it’s not like they’ve never done that before, Dick quitting as Robin has been retconned several different ways).
Roy knocks Ollie out, which impresses his shady manager enough that he decides to take Roy to meet the boss of their “operation”. On the way out, Roy tosses something to Oliver, which turns out to be a radio tracking device.
Some goons come to “dispose” of Oliver and wonder who it was that managed to knock out “a genuine card-carryin’ super hero”. Ollie gets in another offhanded compliment about Roy (which only seems to happen when Roy isn’t around, of course).
Meanwhile, Archie the manager and “Mr. Aubrey” offer Roy a job in their organization, giving Roy the proof he needed to take them down.
Oliver, who has escaped and followed Roy’s signal to the office building, swings in to help and we get to see the old team fighting together for the first time in a very, very long time (since before GL/GA, I think). Note: Google says a “bunkie” is either slang for a roommate or cellmate.
After some friendly banter, boxing glove arrows, and a chance for Roy to show that he doesn’t need his costume or bow to be a formidable opponent, the crime boss is ready to give Roy and Green Arrow whatever information they want.
Back in the GLGA drug trafficking arc, there was a lot of talk about drug dealers taking advantage of kids who were hurting, including Roy. There still hasn’t been a single mention of Roy’s addiction, so I’m not sure if this is an intentional callback to that or not. Roy's desire to help and protect other disenfranchised kids is pretty consistent, and it’s nice to see it start so early here.
The issue ends on Ollie and Roy having a conversation in which Oliver tells Roy he doesn’t have to do everything alone, and Roy calls Ollie out for his ego and headstrong behavior. It’s not the friendliest interaction, but it’s not really unfriendly either and it gives us a few parallels between the two. It also ends on a very pointed use of the word “son”, in contrast to Ollie consistently thinking of/referring to Roy as his “ward” in GLGA. Also, Roy is going to keep playing drums for “Great Frog” and shows no intention of getting back into costume.
In the end this was a pretty decent issue that seems like it mostly served to bring Roy back into DC canon after his 3 year absence (although they still proceed to not use him again for another 2 years after this). I’m really unclear on what exactly is going on with timeline and continuity here. The way I see it the Action Comics writers are either:
1. being gross and weird about brushing off the fact that in their last appearance together, Oliver hit Roy and threw him out on the street or
2. trying to pull a soft retcon and change what happened between Ollie and Roy because they didn’t like how it was done previously.
It’s not exactly uncommon for comic book writers to rewrite each other’s canon storylines, but it’s also not uncommon for them to be terrible and gross, so I really can’t tell. I’m personally pulling for the second option though, I still maintain that GLGA’s “addiction arc” was trash that needed to be retconned/redone in a better way. I love Roy’s later arcs that deal with his recovery and talking about drug addiction and think they’re very important, but the original source was very poorly done.
