It's weird how people paint "daddy issues" and even "mommy issues" as, like, a joke or a failure on part of the person who has those issues, rather than recognizing that daddy and mommy issues stem, for so many people, from abuse. What this all is is just abuse apologia, and nobody seems to either notice or maybe even care.
When somebody with daddy or mommy issues opens up about the "why," I can't ever seem to shake the fact that they tend to have gone through a ton of abuse and bullshit as a child. It's just crazy that other people would look at that and see a joke or a failure of the once-child who was abused.
#abuse#abuse tw#abuse mention tw#child abuse#child abuse tw#mental health#it really goes to show (to me) that people either can't or don't WANT to acknowledge that parents can be the ones to have fucked up#if all the blame is placed on their child/ren then you can maintain the illusion that the parent is always right...#...that parents know what is best and they will always do what is best for their child/ren#it's just weird to be somebody with parental issues and all that gets steamrolled into 'mommy issues' that then become a Big Joke...#...especially because i'm a man (and because people are misogynists who think it's just so funny that women are people)...#...i find that my own issues are expected to be treated as a joke or a punchline or something i must whisper in the dark...#...so that others may have the luxury of pretending to not hear it or to have the luxury of forgetting in the morning...#...and it just sucks because that leaves me to remember and grieve and doing that with the knowledge that my abuse Is A Joke at My Expense#if you wonder why so many abuse victims/survivors become unsavoury: this is why#i'm too bitter about this topic specifically to care about the comfort of people who don't get it and don't WANT TO...#...because it is THEY who are uncomfortable with the very NOTION that abuse happens#if you can't acknowledge that abuse happens WITHOUT downplaying to for your sense of comfort you will NEVER help abuse victims/survivors#you will find that you start prioritizing YOUR sense of comfort over the safety and continued survival of victims/survivors

The final shot of Link Click's season 2 ending theme feels veeerrry reminiscent of the prop used in the 1960 movie The Time Machine (especially that red seat!) but interestingly enough, the actual plot being animated before us—screenshots below—seems to borrow elements from the 2002 release of The Time Machine, which is quite different from its predecessor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the 2002 movie, the main protagonist's motivation for building his time machine actually wasn't in the original story (both movies are based on an H. G. Wells novel published in 1895). Care to take a guess at what that motivation was?
His fiancée was murdered, so he travels back in time to find a way to save her.
While the motivations behind the character in Link Click's ED aren't really clear, it sure does imply that this man's (implied) wife is dead.
Now, if you haven't yet and really really want to see the 20+ year old movie I'm referencing entirely unspoiled, you should probably stop reading here. For everyone else...
In the 2002 movie, the time machine inventor travels back in time over and over again to try and save his wife, but no matter what he does...something always kills her in the end. She was destined to die. Hmm, sound familiar?

These are lines spoken by Lu Guang to Cheng Xiaoshi during the earthquake episode (s1 e5), while Cheng Xiaoshi was still in Chen Xiao's body.
SO. What does the fact that Link Click chose to reference this specific movie and this specific plot point from the movie mean for season 2??? I'm terrified excited to find out—all I know is that the implications here are making me lose my goddamn mind.
(Also the fact that this time machine is only revealed by making the figurines of the couple touch palms which directly mirrors how CXS and LG clap in order to time travel DOn'T tALk tO ME)

Ben Solo being a girl dad means he gives in when his daughter asks for anything :D (this action will have consequences) 👀 I love the idea of Ben being the cool parent while Rey is a little bit more firm (still a great mama).

I need s3 to acknowledge Cheng Xiaoshi's missing parents. We didn't see a ton of it in S2 and like, fair enough it isn't the most pressing issue going on at the time. But Cheng Xiaoshi's trauma is just so integral to the story. His longing for his absent parents is what drove him to text Emma's parents, leading to her doom. His longing is what drove him to attempt to save Chen Xiao's mother, and the devastation that occurred afterwards. His heartbreaking love for his parents was integral to the two most important dives in Link Click--the instigating effect dive and the core thematic dive.
And considering how much the audiobooks are embellishing his trauma more, I feel like...surely this is leading up to something, perhaps?

If I were greedy…
I spend a disproportionate amount of time appreciating the addition of these four simple words to the "I really wanted to develop these myself…" line in the manga side scene with how much insight they provide the audience into Ray's mindset during this arc.
Greedy people don't pull off successful escapes. Greedy people risk getting their friends killed. Greedy people end up losing everything.

(Chapter 181.1 | Chapter 4)
It's a layered message to Isabella as well.
You've known what I've wanted for a long time now. None of those three things have changed. You don't have to worry about me betraying you.
The way he looks at her when he says it, too; tries to make himself both nonthreatening to not invoke her ire or suspicion, yet aware enough to convey he can still competently complete his side of their agreement (along with a bit of pettiness, wanting to believe he has more control of the situation and not wanting to let it seem like she can pull a fast one on him. Knowing what's to come in less than 48 hours is heartbreaking), all while having the most subtle sad and tired tinge to his eyes and subdued grin to mask it.
(Because what if things were different for the two of them. For all of them.)

He already believes he's asking for so much, and yet…

I KNEW IT I FUCKING KNEW IT WOULD BE THIS
Akechi and Ren's "Welcome home/Honey, I'm home" is an okaeri/tadaima exchange.
And it's tempting to be like oh, this is the adaptation hitting us over the head again. But there's an intimacy to this.
Akechi isn't supposed to be there. He wants to unbalance Ren, so he's deliberately intruding on Ren's home, on his uchi. And he emphasises that with that okaeri that you would only use with your uchi - in the in-group of close people, the family, who belong in your home.
And there are two real ways you can respond: you can either call him on it - "Why're you here?" - or you can accept it and respond in kind, with tadaima, unbalancing Akechi in turn. (Because even though Ren is fighting back, being accepted into the group is very, very dangerous ground for Akechi.)
It's also kind of touching and sweet any time Ren treats Leblanc as his home, but that's a whole other deal. But, idk. There's a really sweet subtlety to Ren's tadaima, I think, that "Honey, I'm home" loses entirely.
(Also it's easy to miss that Akechi started it, like the troll he is.)
