Siren-human cohabitation before the Pownall massacre

NOTE: The following is a theory. It is an argument based on evidence by the show but has not been confirmed by the writers or any episodes of the show.

Obligatory TL, DR: I believe the show depicts Sirens having regular contact with humans (at least with the Haida) up until the time of the massacre.

One of the biggest questions that arise out of Freeform's Siren is when exactly human and mermaid paths diverged. Biologically speaking the Sirens and Humans are closer to each other than Horses are to Zebras. Whether they share a common ancestor or whether Sirens evolved directly out of the human species is an imposisble question to answer due to a lack of evidence, though I favour the latter theory given the close similarities between humans and sirens.

Just for how long did the two species coexist peacefully together after the biological divergence though? This is the main question of this post and although we never get an explicit answer I do believe there are several scenes in the show that allow us, the viewers, to form an opinion about this subject.

Evidence 1: The Siren Song

The mere existence of the Siren Song is by itself a strong piece of evidence for continued Siren-human interaction as the Song itself only works when in proximity of humans.

As Donna demonstrated in Episode 101 “The Mermaid Discovery” the more powerful and more harmful "defensive" variant can be sung even when there is no visual contact with humans (she sang it from inside the hold of the north star in the premiere). The less harmful "love" variant can only be sung when in visual contact (and close proximity) with a human, as confirmed by Ryn in Episode 203 "Natural Order".

Evolutionary changes in human or near-human species take a lot of time, especially when such a change manifests in different body physiques. This is especially true regarding such complex changes (in this case changing the vocal cords and surrounding area to be able to use so many frequencies). This alone tells us that they had enough prolonged contact with humans to develop these abilities. Furthermore this also suggests a very close, maybe even an originally symbiotic relationship between humans and Sirens because otherwise there is no reason such an ability would ever be favoured by evolution.

Evidence 2: Cave paintings

Further evidence of a harmonious, maybe even symbiotic earlier relationship arrives in episode 207 "Entrapment". In this episode Katrina leads the group to a cave where they discover cave paintings made by native americans and the Sirens. Eliza (who seems to be the groups intellectual), Levi and Frank help Helen translate them.

According to their translation, the original message was: "We live here in harmony, tribes of land and tribes of sea"

And after all, it would make sense that those that evolved into Sirens would stay close with their human cousins and that this continued even after different societal structures had formed in the two tribes. Did this cohabitation continue into a timeframe close to the time of the arrival of US settlers in Bristol Cove? I would argue that it did, based on the following.

Evidence 3: The Haida knew how to help hybrids

In Episode 110 "Aftermath" Helen reveals her ancestry to the Trio, namely that she is the last descendant of the daughter of Charles Pownall and "his" mermaid. She explicitly mentions how the British settlers did not know how to deal with the Baby being born in mid-transformation. Charles then brought his baby to the Haida people, who helped the Baby complete her transformation.

The question though is how the Haida knew how to deal with this? It might have been simple trial and error based on what Charles would have told them. Yet I find this unlikely considering that it was a life-threatening situation that would not allow for a slew of experiments and that time was most likely in short supply.

A more logical explanation would be that the Haida of Bristol Cove knew about hybrids precisely because they had interacted with the sirens before. Charles' daughter probably was not the first hybrid either given that Sirens and humans were literally living together (see above). I would therefore argue that the Sirens probably lived with (or at least had regular contact with) the haida right up until the time the British arrived. Otherwise, it would have make no sense for the Haida to help a hybrid born from a British man and people they had no contact with. Nor would they have had any reason to pass on such knowledge of how to help hybrids complete their first transformation in the first place.

Evidence 4: Eliza can diagnose human medical problems

In Episode 212 "Serenity" Ryn decides to get help for Ben and Maddie. She eventually returns with Eliza, the mermaid healer. After placing some resonating chrystals in their hands she hums a few tones at them and then immediately (and accurately) diagnoses both the problem and prescribes the cure.

When I first saw this scene, I was so impressed with Eliza and how routine this seemed for her. If you would ask any human doctor today to diagnose a brain problem in a near-human species he would probably tell you that he is not qualified to do this and that you should go to a specialized vet. Yet for some reason Siren physicians are able to do so. Not only do Siren healers have knowledge of human anatomy but they also have knowledge of the effects of the song on humans. This knowledge must have passed on to successive healer generations even after the massacre as Eliza was not alive back then (the oldest merm we have seen so far was Frank and he was not hostile at all against Ben or humans and thus most likely not involved in the massacre). Again, it makes no sense to pass this knowledge on unless it occupied a significant and useful part within their reportoire of their medical knowledge.

[A caveat: It might be that Eliza only knew the problems with the brains because human and Siren brains have a similar structure. Yet this does not explain why she knows the problem with the song's effects as the song is a feature reserved only for the human-siren interaction.]

Evidence 5: The massacre itself

The mere fact that fishermen armed with with harpoons, primitive nets and ships that were unable to go faster than ~14 knots (20 km/h) were able to slaughter many Sirens is unbelievable on its own unless one assumes special circumstances.

Sirens can run as fast as a deer on land, break steel bars with one hand, swim faster than sharks in the ocean and have a unique defence mechanism that can turn humans into thralls that are entirely at the mercy of the Siren that is singing the song. Plus the massacre by all accounts happened on the water where Sirens enjoy even greater advantages than on land over humans.

The only way the whole story of the massacre makes sense is if the Sirens and humans were in close proximity and if the Sirens did not consider humans a threat, thus allowing surprise attacks to work. Which would in turn require the Sirens being used to a human presence in their lives. Maybe there was a long history of cooperation with (some) fishermen. After all, how else could Captain Pownall not only gather more fish than anybody else but also have regular contact with "his" mermaid?

This of course would also mean that the Pownall Massacre not only dealt a severe blow to the Siren population (maybe even one they never recovered from) but also ended hundreds, maybe thousands of years of cooperation and cohabitation.

Based on the above evidence I would therefore argue that Sirens had regular contact with humans (at least with the Haida) up until the time of the massacre.

Speculation: It would not surprise me if there are more hybrids besides the hybrid cult we see on the show. There might even be pureblood siren families who have lived for decades and centuries among humans and have gone undetected for all this time.

Of Oracles and Kings

After surely enough hours of thinking I finally managed to write down, what I am thinking of the Prologue of Episode Ardyn. Everything I gathered since the release of Final Fantasy XV will be used in this post, probably not pleasing every single individual - but this is my opinion alone.

All the facts I am going to list are part of the Game, may it be from several translation sources - as far as the german was closer to the original japanese, I considered a few things from there, too.

Remember, this is a post made by someone who hated Ardyn on an early stage, but fell in love with the chancellor after enough time, fancfiction - replays and so on. But I will edit this whenever I find something new that is a reliable source.

Now is your last time to turn back, if you are an Ardyn hater or want to spill more fire into it.. Last chance to scroll past this. Thanks.

And by all means. Whatever I have written down there - this does not justify what he had done in the game.

1: Izunia

Ardyn Lucis Caelum. The name we all got to know during the stage of the game, as Noctis goes into the chrystal. The tale of the accursed. I guess I do not have to repeat this. We all know it very well. But the first name we stumble over by this handsome traveller with that voice like silk -> Izunia.

So, in the Dossier by german translation it was stated, that the Name of Ardyn was Izunia.. Before they became Lucis Caelum. Considering the Anime now - I have two theories.

They messed up the translation. Again.

Which is hopefully more like to be happening: Before the Plague went down and everything went to hell, everyone might have been normal. Same for Somnus and Ardyn. Only as the world needed it, they were gifted by the Astrals to stop this. Rising over the human limits with their abilities they were given the Name of Lucis Caelum. For whatever reason. I hope this will get finally solved and covered in the DLC.

2: Fleuret/Oracle

We have Aera. A woman that is betrothed to Ardyn and sneaking out to see him. Called the Oracle .Didyou guys ever reconsider that an Oracle was not always meant to heal the people? If we can take the information of the Prologue for granted, Aera was talking to the Astrals/Godsl and spreading their word and plans among the people. Perhaps because she could understand the godlike gibberish. She was no healer. It was Ardyn on his own. They looked up to her and took her word for granted.

So after he was no longer able to heal, I guess the Astrals or Bahamut decided that they needed a new source of Light in this darkness. Because the Plague was not gone after Ardyn was killed/imprisoned/abandoned. But it couldn’t be her. It couldn’t be Aera. Even if she looks a lot like Lunafreya and shares her last name as far as I know - she died to protect the man she loved. Besides the shared looks are quite intersting.. Remember the time Ardyn was killing Lunafreya and his entire look softened for a mere second? Perhaps he saw her again.

So, we see another woman next to Aera - perhaps Gentiana as she was a Messenger of the Gods as well and some Artworks show a dark haired woman that wields the Trident. It is not confirmed yet, but I guess that she might have assisted Somnus indeed. Just not like the very first Oracle did.

3: Scourge

While both brothers have their way of dealing with it, I have to say I like Somnus even less than before. Not that he just burned the people alive - he made it worse without noticing, calling his brother a traitor for doing his best to stop the plague from spreading. So in fact, Ardyn cleaned the mess up - his younger asshole brother created. Also - people say that the Memory might a fake. I can nearly assure you it is not. During the early scenes you see Somnus gathering the Victims of the plague. It is night. Do you guys remember what happened in the game during night and with Demons around? Right. The Area got misty/foggy and some particles were flying around. So. GUESS WHAT. There are DOZENS of people. It’s just what happens with all the scourge piled up. As Aera dies Ardyn can’t hold back the darkness he had gathered over an undefined amount of time. Maybe it had been years. So what Somnus had faced with Gil in the beginning.. Was probably NOTHING compared to the darkness Ardyn had been holding back, Same for the moment Ardyn gets stabbed by his brother in the tower/Temple/whatever.As the entire Scourge that was gathered in his body is released, it’s all dark. This is one of the effects of the scourge. Don’t play it down. So killing someone with the scourge is not an option, as we saw it only spreads ( Reference: The ‘Death’ of Ardyn during the ending) Unlike the method Ardyn used -> Taking it in and keeping it contained. That gives me to think..Did Lunafreya heal it the same way like Ardyn did? Was she getting that weak because of it and the Covenants?

There probably was a way to clear it. Perhaps a special rite whatever. But that was never mentioned. Maybe Ardyn was just send to sacrifice himself with all the Scourge, only given this task. One live in exchange of countless. But we know how this played out.

4: Kings

I noticed some people claiming that Ardyn was in the end selfish as he announced himself King. He didn’t. He never really did. First of all he was traveling alone and in secret, admired by the people he helped with a real solution. They despised Somnus for what he did - and I can’t blame them. If someone would burn my entire family just for the sake of ‘preventing’ things, I would be pissed too.

Ardyn was loved by the people. They asked him to be king. They had chosen him. And he knew what kind of burden that would be, but for the sake of them - he would have been their king. We see Aera talking to the Chrsystal - performing some kind of ceremony to listen and spread their word. It was Somnus who asked. But the ones seeing the scene don’t know what was told. Only Aera and Somnus know - at least that was what I thought. But recalling Episode Ignis helps here. The Chrystal itself tells us there, that Ardyn was indeed chosen.

They call out Ardyn and he ends up in the same room - Somnus seems to snap, revealing his master plan to get Ardyn to them because they had lost him before and says that he is the chosen one. Somnus lied. Otherwise Aera wouldn’t be so surprised. He didn’t even wait for HER to announce it. Aera the Oracle - the messenger of the god, the voice the people would listen to.

So I assume that Somnus is indeed the jealous King Ardyn told us about.

That he was in the end rejected by Chrystal was not his fault. Ardyn hadn’t done anything wrong in this case. He had tried to fulfill his calling - knowing what would happen. Sadly we have no real information about this but I really guess that Ardyn was talking the truth. He was erased from history. And we know that Somnus felt guilty.

5: Curse and Blessing

We know that Ardyn is immortal. Unless Noctis shows up and fulfills his calling and cleans up the mess Somnus and Bahamut had created.

We also know that the Oracle promised Ardyn to remember him always - even if no one else would. Foreshadowing? Perhaps. Perhaps she had seen the future like Ignis did during his Episode. Words she used during the gameplay trailer reveal, that she wanted Ardyn to live ( I guess she meant him. And I guess the scene was a dream that haunts him during the 2000 years or after his freedom.)

Maybe she had used these words before, trying to encourage him. Perhaps she had known about the state he was in. Maybe she knew he had a calling to follow. This is just a theory of mine and I can’t say for sure how this will play out. But I hope SE will play it smoothly, otherwise I will be mad af. But he calls it himself Both during the train-scene. My thougts on that. The Blessing part might be indeed from Aera.. While the curse keep him chained to this world and far from the woman he had loved.

6: Lies

There is no good or evil, only thinking makes it so.

If it would be a twisted memory, I assume we would know. Ardyn had suffered a lot. He had seen people die he cared for. He had lived, loved and in the end found peace. People say that this insight into the Episode might be twisted because it is Ardyn’s story we’re talking about. Think about it again. Aera is telling us the story and we have enough proof that he is talking the truth. As it is even said by the developers that the Anime will show the side of Ardyn we didn’t know so far. It is confirmed.

(And if someone screams. BUT THE PLACES ARE DIFFERENT - Watch the prologue again, or at all.... Watch it for real. And notice the details, temple area, open at the sides, different time. It is as confirmed as I can say now. If SE tricked us.. Well. I just can work with what I have. There is no mistake in the Animation or such. Watch it 200 times if you have to. I can point it out by seconds, but I am too lazy for that.)

To erase every single trace of Ardyn in history, Somnus had to work cleanly. I have to say, Somnus did good by that. Either because he burned everyone alive who knew or made sure the day was never mentioned like it happened.

But why isn’t Aera mentioned? Somnus erased Ardyn from history. Guess you wouldn’t want anyone to know that you actually killed his fiancé, because you’re a mad,stupid idiot she knew the truth that he didn’t. Sad death. I hope they’re happy in the Afterlife. They deserve it.

A lot has been lost. No one had known. No one. And to be fair, a common quote I stumbled across lately a lot: History is written by winners.

He calls himself noble, thinking that his actions are the right ones. Maybe that’s why he burned the people alive. But burning innocent people is not noble. There is nothing noble about killing the fiancé of your brother and calling her a foolish woman. There is nothing noble of tricking your brother and cursing him, giving him no choice but to mourn for the love he had. Good job Somnus. It took your nearly 2000 years to realize and ask your friendly younger version to give Ardyn peace, huh. A little bit late, asshole. No, I don’t forgive you.!

To finish this for now, I have to say: Ardyn deserved better. Same for Aera. It is a tragedy.

Not you, Somnus, I hope I can smash you in an epic-long-ass-bossfight during the DLC: Otherwise my comrades-Character will wipe the Lucian floor with your remaining body parts. I hope we get more answers during the DLC and can’t wait to finally play it.

Well, you already know a lot about Obsidian, so I’ll tell you more about my other characters.

Diamond is his little sister. He is closest to her because they share the same father, Ore. Diamond is a sweet little baby, but she is the world’s most tactless girl. She calls them how she sees them and isn’t afraid to insult someone. She loves hearing the stories Obsidian tells her about the Dragons. She is still young, so she isn’t really aware of the male and female boundaries of their culture yet. There is actually a really cute scene where she asks Obsidian what the bead in a young male’s hair is for and he is embarrassed to tell her even though they are siblings.

Emerald is another interesting character. Obsidian has a huge crush on her, but she ignores him, her interests elsewhere. She plays a big part in his life, though, and she soon starts to see him in a different light, but he loses interest. Diamond hates her, though. Emerald becomes the leader of Obsidian’s village, Colorsfall and makes a deal with Diamond to help her with a task.

Chrystal is Obsidian’s mother and the mother of all his other sisters. She is the village leader. She is wise and beautiful and is a Priestess of the Dragons. She and two other women wear a necklace to symbolize their power. It is a silver four-toed Dragon claw pendant with a jewel clutched within the talons. The gem is different for all three women; Chrystal’s is a white crystal. The pendant is worn down and has a pinkish tint to it. The necklace is plaited with light pink pearls and silver. She is the High Priestess, the leader and commander of the hearts of men and women. She is responsible for seeing to it that the Dragons’ bidding is carried out.

Ore is Obsidian and Diamond’s father and Chrystal’s favorite husband and lover. Chrystal married four men because Jeweler society is a polygamous society and having one husband would be strange and insulting. Ore is the perfect husband; strong, loyal, and loving. Like Obsidian, he trusts too much and gets burnt harshly. Out of anyone, he is the most faithful of the Dragons and becomes a key part in events to come in Obsidian and Rudy’s lives.

Ginger is Obsidian’s mentor and is a cross between Mama Odie from the Princess and the Frog and the Fates from Hercules. She is from Eolar, the neighboring country and has dark skin. She, too, is a Priestess and wears a necklace identical to Chrystal’s except it has a different stone in it. She is the soothsayer and shaman of Stormheight. She assists people in the realm of the spiritual. She is also a bit of a pervert.

Aquamarine is Colorsfall’s village healer and is also a little kooky. She is an older woman and was married to a man from Eolar. She is quieter than Ginger and more aggressive than Chrystal. She is the warrior of the three. She is responsible for caring for the Dragons’ temples and recruiting new Priestesses. She becomes Diamond’s mentor.

Our home solar system may be down by a planet with the recent demotion of Pluto, but the number of giant planets discovered in orbit around other stars continues to grow steadily. Now, an international team of astronomers has detected a planet slightly larger than Jupiter that orbits a star 500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Draco.

TrES-2 was identified from observations made with the 10-cm telescopes, Sleuth and PSST.

Unlike the mythological names associated with the solar system’s planets, the newly discovered planet is known by "TrES-2" and passes in front of the star "GSC 03549-02811" every two and a half days.

The new planet is especially noteworthy because it was identified by astronomers looking for transiting planets (that is, planets that pass in front of their home star) with a network of small automated telescopes. The humble telescopes used in the discovery consist of mostly amateur-astronomy components and off-the-shelf 4-inch camera lenses. This is the third transiting planet found using telescopes similar to those used by many amateur astronomers.

By definition, a transiting planet passes directly between Earth and the star, causing a slight reduction in the light in a manner similar to that caused by the moon’s passing between the sun and Earth during a solar eclipse. According to Francis O’Donovan, an Irish graduate student in astronomy at the California Institute of Technology, "When TrES-2 is in front of the star, it blocks off about one and a half percent of the star’s light, an effect we can observe with our TrES telescopes.

"We know of about 200 planets around other stars," says O’Donovan, lead author of the paper announcing the discovery in an upcoming issue of the Astrophysical Journal, "but it is only for the nearby transiting planets that we can precisely measure the size and mass of the planet, and hence study its composition. That makes each new transiting planet an exciting find. And because TrES-2 is the most massive of the nearby transiting planets, it sets a new limit to our understanding of how these gas planets form around stars."

The planet TrES-2 is also noteworthy for being the first transiting planet in an area of the sky known as the "Kepler field," which has been singled out as the targeted field of view for the upcoming NASA Kepler mission. Using a satellite-based telescope, Kepler will stare at this patch of sky for four years, and should discover hundreds of giant planets and Earth-like planets. Finding a planet in the Kepler field with the current method allows astronomers to plan future observations with Kepler that include searching for moons around TrES-2.

And finally, the research team hails the discovery as the second transiting "hot Jupiter" found with the Trans-Atlantic Exoplanet Survey (TrES), an effort involving the "Sleuth" telescope at Caltech’s Palomar Observatory in San Diego County, the Planet Search Survey Telescope (PSST) at Lowell Observatory near Flagstaff, Arizona, and the "STellar Astrophysics and Research on Exoplanets (Stare) telescope in the Canary Islands. The name of the planet, TrES-2, is derived from the name of the survey.

To look for transits, the small telescopes are automated to take wide-field timed exposures of the clear skies on as many nights as possible. When an observing run is completed for a particular field-usually over an approximate two-month period-the data are run through software that corrects for various sources of distortion and noise.

The end result is a "light curve" for each of thousands of stars in the field. If the software detects regular variations in the light curve for an individual star, then the astronomers do additional work to see if the source of the variation is indeed a transiting planet. One possible alternative is that the object passing in front of the star is another star, fainter and smaller.

In order to confirm they had found a planet, O’Donovan and his colleagues switched from the 10-centimeter TrES telescopes to one of the 10-meter telescopes at the W. M. Keck Observatory on the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Using this giant telescope, they confirmed that they had found a new planet. O’Donovan says, "Each of us had spent countless hours working on TrES at that point, and we had suffered many disappointments. All our hard work was made worthwhile when we saw the results from our first night’s observations, and realized we had found our second transiting planet."

TrES-2 was first spotted by the Sleuth telescope, which was set up by David Charbonneau, formerly an astronomer at Caltech who is now at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and is a coauthor of the paper. The PSST, which is operated by Georgi Mandushev and Edward Dunham (coauthors from Lowell Observatory), also observed transits of TrES-2, confirming the initial detections.
