#circe nico au

Note
Hiya yone! Recently my brain has been infested with bugs that want me to make a Circe Nico AU (Nico is Circe?? Kinda.) You are the glorious fanfic writer who can conjure up anything from anything, so please do your magic.
I'll try my best, however I only know like. 2 stories about Circe at best? So please don't put too much trust in me lol 😅😅
The first one is when Odysseus visits her during his return voyage to Ithaca. I forgot most of it (typical me) except that she turns his crew into animals, which Odysseus managed to convince her to undo and if I'm not mistaken, they live together for a while?? Let's just go with it.
As for this story, I think it would fit best with Jasico? Mainly bc they have that sort of enemies-to-lovers air (Jason distrusted Nico at first). Jason is best fit to be a returning hero, too. Though the Cupid debacle is like heaven and earth with mere convincing on Odysseus' part, I reckon we can work around it with enough maneuver. Why does Nico accept to turn them back? - Maybe he's feeling generous, maybe he's a petulant lonely witch who wants people to stay but never knows how to voice it, and ppl often run at the first sight of him, so he just turns them into animals to keep them by her side.
In the end, Odysseus leaves Circe. This aligns well with the fact that Jason just dropped dead shortly after he and Nico became friends. Which is a funny (and depressing thought) if you put thoughts into it. Which I can't atm lmoa.
Anw. think of it as a piece of quiet Jason has given Nico in the expanse of his loneliness. That, though he was swept away by the natural order of things at the end, Jason did try his best to alleviate Nico's pain. So I reckon there should be a little bit of affection - if not love - in there.
The second story is, well, Circe and Scylla. And the male lover whose name I forget.
This is a classic case of jealousy - so who fits it better than Percy, the canon epitome of every jealous trope in the history of fiction?
sorry that was my pettiness talking. Anywayyyyy, I suppose I don't need to talk about this... I mean it's pretty clear who is who and how the story transpires: Circe is in love with that-something-sea-god, who is in love with Scylla, so Circe turns her into a monster. The only difference between Circe and Nico in this is that he doesn't do anything to Annabeth (even refuses to hate her still. gosh).
But that wouldn't be Percico, is it? So I say just say fuck it and make Percy a sea monster or something Idk. A witch living secluded in an island with his beloved sea monster? I'm in.
Another choice would be to make Annabeth the bad one but I'm in no position to make that propose.
If you still want to keep the story, and if you're any of an unhinged person like me, just make Nico the villain. Well, Circe is the villain in this story, yeah? Embrace it - Nico as the powerful witch, whose loneliness-induced jealousy wreaks havoc on even a sea god. What's left is not love - because love is the last thing Yone needs in fanfics srsly - but an impression of terror, of how disastrous Nico's love can be.
The concepts mix well in this case btw. I remember a painting of Circe pouring a plate filled with poison into the sea. Just imagine it - a blinding blackness spreading rapidly across the lapping water with just a touch of Nico's dainty finger. The shadows overlap with the roaring waves - the black undercurrents raging all the same - and darkness swallows all those whom he call enemies. If Percy's the sea and Nico's the lightless bottom, dark, mysterious, and full of threats.
That's everything I have atm, I guess. Sorry for not being able to help much :(((

More Hunger Games Au stuff!!
This will be more explore the changes for characters and how they're like in this au.
Percy Jackson
Victor of the 74th hunger games, from district 4. Afterwards he was positioned as a replacement mentor for district 10 as the last viable victor had passed due to unknown circumstances. He works with Annabeth and Grover as part of the rebel force. Very beloved by the capital citizens.
Annabeth Chase
One the leaders of the rebellion and district 13. Her father's family came from a line decent of D13 survivors who settled in D3. When she was about reaping age she ran off and was found by Grover who took her to Chiron and D13. She was introduced to Percy by Grover after the 74th games and world's with them for the rebellion.
Grover Underwood
Set undercover as a tribute escort why working with Percy, he's worked in disguised for multiple tribute escort positions, including D4. He's quick to find demigods tributes and tries to keep them alive best he can in his positions. He also tries to help people escape their districts when he can.
Luke Castellan
Took care of Annabeth when she was still in D3,was reaped right before he turned 18 and was the Victor of his games. Had started with a rebellious look on the Capital but President Nomiki took interest in him and steered his hatred towards Hermes and other similar gods instead. He's one of few from districts to be given a capital position, now assisting the head Game Maker despite knowing what the games are like.
Thaila Grace
Formally born in the capital, she was separated from her younger brother when their mother gave him up to President Nomiki. As she grew she became very anti-Capital, and when her mother died she was found by Artemis first before news reached the President. Artemis took her in as a hunter and she joined the rebellion. She had once been close with Luke, but drifted apart when she saw what he was becoming.
Jason Grace
Jason is the youngest of all Zeus/Jupiter's kids at the moment, he was abandoned by his birth mother and taken in by President Nomiki when he was still quite young. Despite this, Hera/Juno took attention to him and made sure that he wouldn't become a repeat of Nomiki. Why he had not the best guardians, he continued to keep a big heart and was ultimately tasked as the tribute escort for district 2 why still pretty young himself. He's not aware of the rebellion as no one really considered pulling him into it, but he's very much supportive of tributes best he can. He is escort for the 74th-75th games.
Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano
Reyna and her sister were born in district 2, but their father had became high enough in ranking military wise, they were moved to the capital. Shortly after their father passed and they were cared for by Circe for a short time before she went missing. Leaving just her and her sister.
At a certain point her sister ran into and joined the Amazons, leaving her in the Capital on her own. She grew to know Jason and often studied with him. She soon joined D13 after the 74th games, working alongside her sister and others in the rebellion.
Bianca Di Angelo
Bianca was born in District 1 with her younger brother Nico, early on she been taken in by Artemis but was captured by peacekeepers and had been rigged to be reaped for the 74th games. She had trusted D4's Percy Jackson and followed him closely as well as the other demigods that had found eachother during the games. She had been killed by her fellow tribute from District 1, making Percy promise to look for her little brother if he survived.
Silena Beauregard
Silena was the female tribute from district 8 for the 74th games, she had allied with other demigods that had been reaped that year and had fallen in love with District 2's Charles Beckendorf. She was killed by a acid rain beast during one of the game arena's events why trying to defend the others.
Charles Beckendorf
Charles was born into District 2,he had managed to be led to his other half siblings in that area. Immediately taken up caring for himself and four younger siblings. He was reaped for the 74th games and allied with the other demigods reaped that year. He fell in love with D8's Silena Beauregard and was close friends with D10's Lee Fletcher and was saddened by his death. He died why blowing up a enemy tribute's camp.
Lee Fletcher
Lee Fletcher was born into District 10, he had taken in his younger four half siblings and helped where he could around the District. He was reaped for the 74th games and was well liked by the capital viewers for his more laid back and nurturing nature. He joined in with the other demigods that year and was the group's medic. He was the second of them killed when he stayed back to let the others escape why he held off District 1 and 7's male tributes. He was killed by District 1's tribute by his head being smashed in, yet shortly after his death the tribute was swarmed and killed by a unkindness of ravens sent by the mourning furious godly twins outside of game maker's controls. The death really sticking with viewers afterwards even without seeing the full attack.
Nico Di Angelo
Youngest brother of Bianca, he already was suppose to be sneaked out to D13 after his sister joined the hunt. However, her forced reaping left him alone in District 1. Percy found him after the games, why their relationship is tense Nico still somewhat trusts Percy. Percy manages to find a way to let him take him back to D4 to live with him and his mom and stepfather in Victor row. He still can be reaped, but his name will be add amongst D4's tributes instead.
Will Solace
The third, now second oldest of his half siblings, Will was born in D10 and was taken care of by both his mother and older brothers. He was devastated after his eldest brother Lee was reaped the 74th, then he had been reaped for the third quarter quell, but his older brother Michael Yew volunteered in his stead. He's protective of his siblings and greatly loved by his district. He's one of their best medics.
Michael Yew
Michael Yew was the second and now oldest of his siblings. He was born in D10 and had lost his mother after she was punished for making bows on her own merit. He's a small ball of attitude but is greatly valued as a hunter and a medic in his district. He's often called "Raven" for how he looks when running or jumping from place to place to get somewhere. The nickname only strengthening after Lee's death.
He shocks others by volunteering for his younger brother during the 75th reaping, which most didn't expect volunteers for. His attitude was actually a charming feature to capital citizens, some finding it amusing. Though many underestimate him for his size.
Jake Mason
After Charles Beckendorf's death Jake became the oldest of his siblings,he was reaped for the 75th games hardly a year after. Being from a career district he definitely has more people thinking he has a chance, especially when the strength and skills his brother had shown the year prior.
I'll add more but this main gist of characters for my idea hdgsf
Yes it's gonna be more an excuse to write Jake x Michael... ^^'
I'm thinking so much about this it's taken my brain.

heroes of olympus trc au
frank as the rich academic kid searching for an ancient roman emperor to cope with the gaping emptiness inside him and the fear that his life is worthless and that he shouldn’t be alive. reyna as his roommate. after her dad died under mysterious circumstances and her surrogate mom circe went to prison she’s kind of going off the rails and also has a buzzcut and tattoos and a vintage car (frank has his grandma’s volvo) and an older sister she hates. she can also manifest her dreams into the real world but that’s book 2 shit. hazel is living alone and working several jobs bc she’s on scholarship and dealing with medical issues and ptsd due to past abuse but its fine :). she’s fine :). she and frank are kind of in love but not admitting it and its not going to end well. she also might be psychic and/or deceased but doesn’t know it yet. leo is living at the waystation with his foster moms who are psychics but he is not psychic, nor is he a scholarship kid even though he’s a genius bc of his record as a runaway but its fine :). he’s not angry or jealous :). he’s fine with staying in this town forever with no clear purpose :). he’s also fated to kill his true love if he kisses him. nico is frank and reyna’s roommate. they don’t remember why he lives there or know a lot about him or remember him when he’s not around. bc he’s so unmemorable. no other reason :(

The EagleOwl Swap Part 4B- House of Hades Au Part 2
Anyway after the death of Jason, everyone's very riled up, and thus the monsters are just eviscerated. Now it's time for Percy who is a beast to handle, and it doesn't really help that Nico and Annabeth aren't really keen on really fighting him, they're too traumatised and conflicted to do so. But that doesn't stop Reyna, Hazel and Leo to fight Percy very aggressively, rather then Leo, who's too angry to think properly and fights very aggressively. Too aggressively, and that cost him. He gets stabbed by Percy, and Hazel gets injured as well. Reyna, not wanting anymore people to get hurt, digs deep inside of her and activates her barely-known-magic she learnt from Circe and teleports her and Percy away to who knows where, and Annabeth and Nico are left carrying the bodies of Hazel and Leo while they leave the crumbling temple. Leo nearly dies, but he lives longs enough through spite to get the proper medical attention. Hazel's injuries, while not as serious as Leo's, still makes her unable to fight much, and Annabeth's drowns in even more angst, because her teammates are injured thanks to her loved one, and oh no it's like Luke allllll over again.
Meanwhile back at the romans, Gaia's army shows up, and the greeks have to fight them. The romans were going to help them out in fighting them, but wait, some romans are switching sides with them, and wait, Octavian's joining them as well? What-
In all the confusion, and the fragile trust between the romans and greeks that's barely there, CHB gets destroyed, and the greeks are running away from what has been, to some, their only home for years. They initially reject help from the romans, but they eventually accept help from them and they set up a temporary base. Still don't trust each other though.
Nico and Annabeth return too late, as their home has been destroyed, and it hits Annabeth the hardest. Her home, the place she's been living for more than ten years, is gone. Just like that. Overtaken by monsters. The comfy bed in her cabin. The woods where there's scorch marks and flyaway arrows from the war games. Thalia's tree, where she loves to hang out, either reading a book or letting Pe- she shuts that thought down very quickly.
There's an angsty reunion between Grover, Thalia and Annabeth, which would only get worse after she spills the beans to them about what happens to Percy, so her and Nico decide to not reveal that information for now. It's not the time. They soon join in on the soon to developed into a crying feast, and the head councillors join in as well.
Also at the makeshift infirmary, Leo's been transferred there. Hazel got better a bit, though it would take a few days for her to fight again. Piper and Frank head in there and start asking rapid questions, but Hazel leads Frank out to give Piper and Leo some privacy to let him explain to her what happened to Jason
The Greeks and Romans are very unsure on what to do now, but the romans offer them a place to stay at the roman camp, atleast for the greeks willing to accept. The bonds between them are slowly being formed, and maybe peace is acheivable between the greeks and the romans, so that's a bright spot.
Of course, Hera show up, and mention that Gaia's amassing all her forces at Mount Orthys, and issues them all the order to go there and fight Gaia, for the gods, for themselves, and their loved ones. The amazons, the huntresses and all the satyrs and nyaids and other helpful sprits will also be joining them. And thus they trudge on, towards the Battle for the Blood of Olympus.
Annabeth questions Hera where's Percy and Reyna, but she's unable to give her a proper answer. "figures" Annabeth mutters under her breath.

@derpy-grackson Here is your trans girl!Percy ft.Jercy au,my liege
Also, quick note in case some things are confusing:I headcanon Percy as a black dominican and Jason as black/white mixed! Now let's start:
Percy was very much your typical baby trans.'Oh,no,don't be sorry for confusing me for a girl, gender dosen't matter to me!' 'Girl characters are so much better than boy characters, they're just so much more relatable' 'Mamí,can you buy me girl clothes?' 'I'm just a cis boy who likes feminine things :)'
Sally had her suspiciouns but didn't want to confuse her in case she was just gnc.But just in case, she made sure to teach her to respect and support trans people
Percy faced some different kind of bullying in addition to the one in canon-we all know this one:Kids are taught that not being cishet is bad so they're are encouraged to bully kids that show signs of being lgbt.Percy started keeping her femininity hidden after a while but it hurt her a lot to be forced to be seen as a boy
But at least Sally let her present however she wanted at home and when they went somewhere far(like Montauk)
It wasn't until Circe's island that she got over her denial, because Circe showed her a vision of what she wanted to look like:Long and poofy hair that reminded her of her beautiful Mamí's,a softer face and a body that was that of a pre-teen girl's.Because she's a girl and she wants to be seen as one
Jealousy burned in her when she saw Annabeth's makeover, which only increased when she remembered all the times she'd referred to her as nothing but a dumb boy.Why was she allowed to practically look like a princess but Percy wasn't?Annabeth didn't even like girly junk!If she could, she would have swapped bodies with her-okay,maybe not that far.Percy loved her thick black hair and dark brown skin and sea green eyes and all her other features. She just wished she was as seen as much of a girl as Annabeth was
The first thing she did when she saw Sally again was come out to her.She was trying not to shake and hugging herself the whole time, fearing the worst but instead came a beaming smile on her face and a hug that smelt like blue cookie dough and felt like acceptance, followed by words of reassurance and validation(No,Percy did not cry of happiness, shut up)
Their neighbors were confused when they found out Percy started presenting as a girl but were smart enough not to say anything because who in their right mind would want to anger a woman who was rumored to have murdered her abusive husband?
Percy let Sally pick her name again and they settled on 'Persephone',partially so she could still go by her nickname because it was important to her, partially because Sally wanted to show how much she loved her daughter like Demeter does.Sally gave Percy her clothes from when she was her age(no,Percy did NOT cry AGAIN,shut up!!!!)and shared her makeup and jewelry with her.The reason was because they were poor but Percy took a huge amount of happiness in her Mamí's support of her
Sadly,Sally couldn't buy her estrogen for the same reason but don't worry, that comes up later!
Annabeth and Grover were the definition of the 'he a lil confused but he got the spirit' meme.At first, they were so over the top that it was suffocating for Percy and she blew up at them for it eventually but that lead to them discussing boundaries and discovering what kind of support Percy actually wanted
Thalia and her are besties off the bat thanks to Thalia taking an instant liking to Percy-Trans people are punk as hell!!Thalia introduced her to Green Day and Percy starts collecting pins to give her to put on her jacket and they try to spend time together outside of quests as often as possible
Her relationship with Nico is a lot better than in canon thanks to him not having a crush on her.Nico didn't feel the need to distance himself from her out of fear that she'd find out and she's part of the 'Nico di Angelo protection squad'(like they should've been in hoo like they we're in pjo but Rick sucks😔)and he's part of the 'Percy Jackson protection squad'(which consists of himself, the rest of their friends,Sally and Tyson)
Percy is SO HAPPY to finally be able to present femininely in public like she wanted to for so long.Sally's old fashion sense and her current one are a bit different but she still feels so good when she wears her off the shoulder sweaters and mid-length skirts and stockings
Rachel lied to her dad about wanting money to buy for stuff for herself so she could use it to buy Percy estrogen pills(Okay, fine, she cried)and Percy smothered her in a bear hug when she gave her her first dosage. She still wishes the normal ones came in blue
Nico takes to hanging around the Jackson home after Percy's 15th birthday and that leads to Percy telling him about her identity and he's shocked but happy that she's like him and in turn tells her about him being gay and jokes that she would be his type if she were a boy. Also! He ends up having blue food as a comfort thanks to her and Sally
Frank was the first fellow trans person Percy met!Speaking as a transmasc person,Frank's character arc feels a lot like a trans guy's(this post is pretty long so send me an ask about it if you're curious JDHDJF).He didn't want to come out to her at first because he thought she was cis but then Percy mentioned her transness when they were with The Amazons and he was like 👁👄👁 and told her when they continued their quest
Jason and Percy's first meeting is similar to but not the same as in canon.Jason had known Percy was pretty from the pictures Annabeth had showed him of her when she'd been looking for her but seeing her in real life and up close took his breath away. Her big and curly hair-unlike him,she wore hers in it's natural state-which looked so soft, her eyes-he used to think calling them 'sea green' was pretentious but they were as beautiful as the sea-that popped with the golden eyeshadow she was wearing, her dark brown skin, her strong figure, the way her lips quirked up in a crooked smile when she fist bumped him...She was a real life dream
Percy didn't think much of Jason at first other than she wanted to be friends with him but then on her first night on the Argo ||,she had a nightmare about Zoe's death that scared her because she hadn't had any clear memories of her yet so she decided to go splash some water on her face to cool down. She didn't think her scream when she woke up had been heard by anyone but then she bumped into Jason on her way back to her room
"Uh,hey Jason!Sorry, did i wake you?"She put her hand on the back of her head sheepishly,an apologetic look on her face, and he looked at her with worry."Yeah.You okay?I heard a scream."Percy tried to convince him that her nightmare hadn't been that bad but he just told her that they were supposed to trust eachother if they were going to defeat Gaea and she winced before sighing and telling him about it,with the additions that she didn't remember Zoe but felt responsible for her death and that she wished she had her memories so she could understand her feelings
Jason's next words are what made Percy develop a crush on him:"Listen,i get you.Hera whipped my memories too.But from what i remember,we're a lot alike-Everyone at Camp Half Blood kept talking about you like you invincible. The people at Camp Jupiter treated me the same way.You should be allowed to be sad and angry and not just their golden girl. You're a person too,not just their hero."Jason smiled kindly after he finished speaking and Percy lifted her arms to hug him but hesitated until Jason noticed and walked closer to her and she launched herself into his arms and he hugged her back. They stayed like that for a full minute, just appreciating eachother, until they realized they had to go back to sleep and said their good nights before going back to their rooms
Jason after his battle with Percy when they got possesed by Eidolons:
Tumblr media
Piper is a Tired Lesbian™ who knows they like eachother and is apalled that they don't realize it themselves."Why do you insist on holding Percy's hand all the time?" "She has really soft hands😳" "Please just kiss her,i'm begging you."
They are S I M P S(yes, the capital letters and spaces are necessary).Percy silently dies in a good way every time Jason does something nice for her(which is often)and Jason cannot and will not shut up about how much he loves being friends with Percy
They were having a nice conversation about Thalia because Percy was getting her memories back and Jason telling her about his interactions with her helped and she kissed his cheek at the end of it as a thank you and he acted like a golden retriver over it before her and Annabeth fell into Tartarus :') I love pain
Jason acted like an overprotective boyfriend towards Percy after she got out because he was afraid of losing her permantently and nobody, not even Percy herself, was pretending she didn't love it
Jason decided to start visiting the Jackson family after the war and Sally absolutely adores him and treats him like her own son, even calling him 'Mijo' like she does Nico.Him and Percy have gone on several 'accidental' dates, including the time they were at the arcade(Jason's treat)and one of the new employees asked if them if they wanted the 'Double Heart Rootbeer Floats' which was like regular rootbeer floats but came in matching cups with hearts on them and were made specifically for couples to share and they'd never been more embarrassed in their lives.Percy told Nico about it when she came back home and he cackled like a hyena
Camp Half Blood Campers are now VERY wary of putting Percy on a pedestal like they used to.Jason made it clear to them that they shouldn't do that when he decided to stay at their camp instead of Camp Jupiter and Percy's very grateful to him for it
I'm having a hard time thinking of how they get together so if you want, feel free to reblog this with ideas on how!Keep it sfw though lmao

Notes and Full Chapter below cut:
Hello everyone and welcome back! I'll admit, this is a little later today than I'd been planning to post (was hoping to get an early start), but hey! If the Puppet History season 4 finale can be late, then so can I!
First off, a massive massive thank you to waterbottle_stickers for being the best beta reader ever. This chapter would be a mess without you. Also, if you haven't already, please check out their enola holmes fic wherever you stray, i follow it's truly wonderful.
If you've been following me on tumblr, then you'll know that, in addition to reblogging an alarming quantity of good omens fanart, I've been making some plans for fics this month. The original plan from back in august was to post every day of the month, but... ahhh.... I just don't work that fast lmao. I'll have to be content with just posting a fair amount this month. Happy october! Anyway, stay tuned.
On this fine day, we've got two lovely QUEER fanfic recommendations that I'm very excited to share. Up first is one from the tumblr blog izzielizzie (which you should all absolutely check out! especially if you're into the one of us is lying fandom!). it centers around the skye/melissa pairing and their senior prom, which Skye is said to have only gone to last minute, and also wearing a lab coat, in a passage of the penderwicks at last. featuring some oblivious lesbians and also jane. once again a massive thanks to izzielizzie, as this fic is one of my favourites!. click here to take a look! (also keep an eye on her blog in general bc her penderwicks fics are awesome!)
The second fanfic is also one I'm very fond of, as it focuses on the siblinghood of skye and jane, which is one of my favourite topics on earth. check out rolling down the ancient high street by hanchewie/ramblemadlyon (tumblr and ao3 respectively) for the sibling antics of aroace skye and bisexual jane when the latter visits the former at her college in california! and, if you like it, ramblemadlyon has two other penderwicks fics from the past couple days that look fantastic as well, and that I look forward to reading.
This chapter is dedicated to my therapist, since I've decided this will be the month of oddly specific dedications. thank you for telling me to stop referring to cruel summer as my "trash baby" and help me recognize the true worth that it holds in my life.
Disclaimer: not my characters, you know the drill. Jeanne Birdsall and Rick Riordan are lucky ducks indeed. chapter title is (obviously) from "lucid dreams" by Juice WRLD.
FROM THE POV OF JANE PENDERWICK
The woods loomed around me, seeming as tall as buildings as they invited me in further. I took another step, the sharp pain of a pinecone digging into my foot barely registered in my mind. I kept walking. A crack sounded throughout the air, and, behind me, a tree splintered round its base and fell down, only inches away from crushing me dead, and completely blocking the path out.
Frightened, I began to run, looking for a way out of the forest. But no matter which way I went, there were only trees in front of me. Where was the path? Where was the grassy hill I had walked down to get in here in the first place. Had I even walked down that hill to begin with? Now that I thought about it, I wasn’t sure I remembered coming here. I wasn’t sure I remembered waking up this morning, or going to bed last night, or anything besides existing in the forest. Who was I? What was I doing here? How could I get out?
Panicking, I stood in the middle of a clearing, looking frantically at the trees around me, trying to find something familiar. Nothing. I was exhausted. How long had I been here? An hour? A day? A lifetime? I collapsed at the base of a tree, sobbing as I tried to remember. Something. Anything.
Then, a voice echoed around me. “Welcome,” it said, and my mind went black.
I bolt upright in bed, a scream halfway out of my throat. I clamp it back, not wanting to wake my cabinmates. Thin light whimpers through the window--enough for me to see my white-knuckle grip on the sheets, but not enough to pass as daylight.
What time is it?
Our cell phones don’t really work here--that was one of the first things Miranda told us when we arrived, and Batty’s been gleefully lording it over us that her Mp3 player will still play music and, like, function, while our smart phones recline sadly in our duffel bags. That being said, I don’t feel quite brave enough to get out of my bed just yet and tiptoe over to the big analog clock that Rio bought at a pawn shop in Colorado. Maybe my phone will at least show the time.
I reach under my bed and fumble for my duffel, hooking my pinky through the zipper loop and yanking it out onto my floor. My phone’s in the front pocket, buried under two pairs of headphones, several gum wrappers, and some strawberry leaves (?????). A piece of gum peels off the screen as I disentangle my phone, and I mentally chide my past self for being so messy.
My phone does not turn on. Big clock it is.
I tiptoe across the cold tile and peer around the tree.
5:45 .
Jesus Pagan Christ.
It’s too early to wake anyone up (as I think this, Batty lets out a snore to rival any crabby Tyrannosaurus Rex), so I wrap a blanket around myself like a criminally attractive burrito, and creep out onto the porch, with my notebook and pen tucked into my shirt.
As long as I live, I will never get tired of summer mornings. There’s something deeply lovely about the soft light of the still-sleepy, pink lemonade sun, the quiet anticipation of the cool air, damp from dew and preparing for the upcoming heat. At home in Cameron, Skye’s woken me up many an early morning to go for a run or do soccer drills or for a grueling “Seven Minute Workout Except You Don’t Follow The Rules And Torture Your Sister by Making It Actually A Forty-Nine Minute Workout.” (But it’s okay, I’m not bitter). But, as delightful as those experiences have all been, I don’t think Skye really gets it. The beauty of the summer morning is not what it can do for your workout schedule, but rather in its gentle softening of an otherwise boiling day. It is to be appreciated in the way that I am now, sitting curled up on this frighteningly creaky porch (I mean, seriously, who built this?) and calling up the Sabrina Starr section of my brain to try and write away the residual panic from my nightmare.
Sabrina sighed as the plane took off. She wasn’t sure if she should have followed the voice in her head telling her to come here. Saying it out loud--even just thinking it--made it sound ridiculous. A dream, a voice in her mind. Barely more than a whim.
Worse than that, Sabrina wasn’t even sure where this whim was taking her. On a napkin in her pocket, she’d scrawled everything she remembered about the dream from the night before. The dark sky, lit only with spiderwebs of lightning, the shadowy figure huddled on a beach and soaked through with rain. The voice crying for help.
And a name. Aeaea.
After she’d woken up, Sabrina had looked up Aeaea, too tired to fully connect why the name felt familiar. Her heart had sunk further after reading the Wikipedia entry, and a breath of hopelessness had left her lips. According to the internet, Aeaea was not a real place. It had been the island prison of Circe. Fiction wasn’t new to Sabrina, and neither was mythology (she recalled an adventure spent with a ghost called Rainbow from a few years back).
Fictional places, though, were another matter. How could she get somewhere if she didn’t know where she was going? Was she trusting her gut with too much this time?
Sabrina folded up the napkin and put it back in her pocket. There was no point in worrying about that now. She’d looked at enough maps to make a guess at where Aeaea might be if it was real. When she got there, she could get more information. Sabrina Starr had survived this long in her career of rescues and whims. She could survive one more adventure. Worst case scenario, she said to herself, I spend a few days running around for nothing and have to brush up on my Greek.
She repeated it to herself like a promise. Worst case scenario, worst case scenario… Eventually, tired out from all her anxieties, and from trying desperately not to worry about what would come next, Sabrina fell asleep.
FROM THE POV OF RACHEL ELIZABETH DARE
“Okay, I give up. Tell me what’s wrong.” Annabeth’s voice startles me away from my plate of eggs, which I had been pushing around with a fork. Anxiety bubbles in my throat, just as it had been since I woke up, and food just doesn’t sound like a good idea.
“I--what?”
Annabeth waves her hand impatiently. “Don’t play dumb. I’ve been talking to you for five minutes and I don’t think you’ve looked up once. Also you’re always hungry in the mornings, so unless you, like, ate an entire cow before I got here, this ,” she gestures to my uneaten eggs, “is unusual behaviour.”
I give her a look. Sometimes, I get the feeling that Annabeth exists as a part of multiple different dimensions at once, like she’s having four other conversations that I can’t hear, and is still ten steps ahead of me in the one I’m actually a part of.
Or maybe I’m just easy to read.
“Nothing’s wrong.” I don’t want to talk about it. “I’m fine.” I’m terrified.
Annabeth sighs. “Is this about the prophecy?”
“No,” I spear another piece of egg, and don’t eat it. “Maybe. Yes.” I feel like going back to my cave and staying there for the rest of my life. Waiting with a book and some paints for the prophecy to get bored and go away. Maybe I’d take Jane with me, or Nico, for some company. That sounds nice.
My plate is pulled away from me as I aim my fork again. “I can’t pay attention when you do that,” Annabeth huffs. I think I wouldn’t invite her to stay in my cave. She’s too on the nose when I want to mope. Then again, she says the same about me.
“Fine,” I turn and face her. “Let’s talk feelings.” Connor Stoll, who had been making his way towards our table, abruptly turns around and walks the other way. I should get Chiron to hire a therapist. Gods know we need it.
Further proving my point, Annabeth’s eyes widen a little, before she remembers it is I who will be spilling. (I make a point to corner her later. It’s a routine we have). “Wow. You broke fast.”
I nod. “I’m tired and you’re annoying.” (False. We both know it. Another routine). “Like you said, I’m nervous about the prophecy.”
Annabeth nods. “And?”
I frown. “What do you mean, and ? There’s no and.”
Annabeth frowns back at me. A mirror, a mime, an annoyance. The nerve to look disappointed in me. “I thought you were spilling, Red.”
I roll my head back and study the roof of the pavilion, which Annabeth designed, and slowly lean my head down to stare at the table. I really don’t want to have this conversation. I go along anyways. “I’m worried about Jane.”
Annabeth leans back, triumphant. “Ah, yes. Your girlfriend.”
Maybe if I try reeeeeeeally hard, I can activate the Oracle of Delphi and freak Annabeth out enough to make her go away. “ Not my girlfriend. You know that.”
“You called Percy my boyfriend for weeks before we actually officially decided.”
I wave my hand dissmissively. “That’s different, you guys were dancing around each other for like three years. You needed a bit of a push. Jane and I kissed once! Over a week ago! And nothing came of it.” We actually haven’t really talked about it. We’re in this sort of in-between zone where we spend a ton of time together, but don’t have a label for it. Honestly, it’s been nice.
Annabeth grins, apparently reading my thoughts. “You’ve been eating lunch with the Demeter cabin, like, every other day. I saw you doing archery together yesterday. Both of you were awful at it, but you stayed there for hours. I’ve never seen you focus on something that long outside of your paintings.”
I stare at the ceiling again. Maybe Annabeth designed it so that a single square foot of rock might fall down onto my head and relieve me from this conversation. “Yes, fine, we spend a lot of time together. But that doesn’t make us a couple, and has nothing to do with what I’m actually worried about!” I can see in her face that Annabeth is more serious now, and is about to fully listen to me, when Percy and Malcolm show up, sliding into the seats across from us, and clanging several plates of pancakes down onto the table in front of them.
“Made them ourselves! Wanna share?” Percy gives Annabeth heart eyes and a kiss on the cheek when she folds a large blue pancake into thirds and bites it like a burrito. I roll my eyes at them because they are a horrifying and disgusting couple and also I kind of want to be them when I grow up. Malcolm ignores them, instead turning to me. “Were you talking about Jane?” he asks, pushing wire rimmed glasses up his nose.
I frown. “Sort of. Why?”
He shrugs, sheepish. “You know. Just, uh, just wondering.”
I narrow my eyes at him, then Percy, who tears himself away from looking at Annabeth to sigh dramatically. “Malcolm wants to ask out Jane’s sister. You know, the blond one.”
I snort. “ Skye? Seriously?”
Malcolm looks vaguely offended. “What’s so weird about that?”
“Sorry, it’s not weird.” I reach over the table to pat him on the shoulder with my fork. “Perfectly normal teenage hormones.” He glares at me and I smile sweetly back. “I just can’t imagine Skye going out with anyone, that’s all.”
Malcolm stares down at his pancake, disappointed. “Oh. You sure?”
I nod, feeling a little more normal with my friends and less doom-related breakfast conversation. My eggs are past the threshold of “warm and appetizing” but I take a bite anyway. “Pretty sure. Jane told me that she’s aroace and, based on past occurrences, there’s a seventy percent chance she’ll punch anyone who asks her out. Anyway, why the interest? I didn’t know you guys talked.”
Malcolm shrugs. “We don’t, really. She just seems cool.”
Percy pipes in, “He’s been practically obsessed with her since she won that soccer game against the Nike kids and made them cry.”
I nod approvingly. “Well, Malcolm, at least we know you have good taste.”
Annabeth pats him on the head, ignoring his complaints that her hand is covered in blue maple syrup. “Better luck next time, brother of mine.”
Piper and Leo join us next, contributing an alarming volume of grapes and a single hardboiled egg to the breakfast display. Leo grabs a pancake and wraps it around some grapes, before taking a big bite. “I hear you’re discussing Malcolm’s romantic failures,” he says around the world’s worst breakfast burrito. Piper gasps in mock offense, then swallows the unpeeled hardboiled egg whole, like a snake. (This is a regular morning routine. She’s trying to work up to being a sword swallower, since her dad did it in a movie once and she thought it looked like fun). “ Malcolm, why didn’t you come to me? I could have given you a verdict within five minutes!”
“I wanted advice on whether I should ask out that Heaphestus boy two weeks ago and you told me to fuck off.”
Piper pouts at him. “That’s on you, you caught me at a bad time.”
Annabeth holds up a pancake with the air of a respected royal and we turn to her. “As delightful as this is, Rachel and I were initially talking about her romantic prospects and also her worries and fears, and I feel that we should get back to that before she slinks off and avoids the rest of the conversation.”
I glare at her. “Why would you bring this away from the very nice conversation we were having about everyone else’s problems? Do you hate me?” Annabeth rolls her eyes. “No, dumbass, I’m just not letting you walk away from a potential breakthrough. Now, where were we? You were saying that you’re worried about Jane but it has nothing whatsoever to do with your relationship, or lack thereof.”
I give a long suffering sigh, and try to communicate telepathically with Piper that she needs to Save Me Now, but she’s looking at me in interest with her chin resting in her hands, her long fingers adorned with rings sent to her from her Mortal girlfriend, Shel, who bought them at a vintage punk store. The traitor. Defeated, I turn back to Annabeth.
“It’s just that, whatever ends up happening with this prophecy, I don’t want it to fuck her up, in the way the quests have sometimes done to us. Like, we’re used to this by now, but it hasn’t been a smooth road. I don’t exactly like going on quests, and at first I was really worried at the prospect of being included in a prophecy, since that’s fairly abnormal, but Jane was only made aware of her heritage a couple months ago! What if this turns out like Silena or Beckendorf or-or Jason, and the prophecy destroys her, and it’s all my fault because I’m the one who pulled her into all this?”
Everyone tenses up at the mention of Jason, but they continue to look at me with a mixture of concern and love that makes something soften inside of me. For the hundredth time, I think of how lucky I am to have these people who love me unconditionally. Even if they really, really need therapy.
“I know that I didn’t plan any of this, but we’re both tied in now, especially since both Chiron and I had the prophetic dream and I actually gave the prophecy that day in the woods, and, well, this isn’t her world yet. She’s only got a little bit of ichor in her, and she grew up knowing nothing of any of this. In a way, I did too, and I have no ichor, but I had clear sight. For me, it was ineffable, but she could technically leave any time, if it weren’t for the prophecy. She can leave, and I feel like it’s up to me to make sure that doesn’t change.”
“Oh, Rachel.” Annabeth reaches her arms out to me and I let myself be pulled into an embrace. “Jane’s going to be okay. We’ll make sure of it.”
Sabrina stood in line at the boat rental hut, her arms crossed and a frown plastered on her face. It had not been a successful afternoon. For hours, she’d been searching the coastal towns near where her plane landed, looking for some trace of Aeaea, or anything else she’d seen in her dream. She was used to working with dregs. It was normal for her to have to squint a little at the evidence, have to shuffle things together around big holes of “Maybe,” like she was working a jigsaw puzzle with half the pieces missing.
But this was something else.
Sabrina had read about places where mythology shaped the culture. Places where the tourist draws were events that had supposedly happened thousands of years ago, or creatures that only existed in grainy photographs and people’s imaginations. Hell, she’d met the Loch Ness monster. Was it insane for her to have assumed she’d be able to find the same kind of thing here? All her training and years of experience had told her that, if you sniff around long enough, you’ll find a conspiracy theorist or a slightly off-the-rails guidebook.
So far, though, Sabrina had found nothing. Absolutely nothing. She hunted around, searching up library catalogs, checking every store on the street. “Aeaea,” “Circe,” even “the Odyssey.”
Nothing.
The line edged along slowly, and Sabrina ran her hands up and down her arms. The air was chilly from its proximity to the cold sea water. There were three people in front of her now. She just had to wait a little longer, then she would have a boat and be able to explore these waters herself.
Something was wrong with this place. Something was wrong with all of these places. And Sabrina was going to figure out what.
Later, Jane and I are taking our time walking to the pegasus stables to watch the riding lesson that Rosalind has reluctantly agreed to let Batty take (provided that Percy, who’s teaching today, doesn’t let her fly high enough that she’ll die if she falls off, and that Batty wears all of the necessary protective gear). Jane looks lovely, wearing a sunshine-y yellow bandana that sets off her dark curls and warm sepia skin. She has on her Camp Half-Blood shirt again, and a short green skirt, and all of it should clash horribly, but it doesn’t.
We’ve decided to cut through the strawberry fields, and I swallow a sun-warmed strawberry while Jane tells me about the dream she had last night. I think back to my conversation with Annabeth this morning when she tells me of the dark woods and the feeling of drowning, the memory warping and the echoing voice. At some point we sit down in a patch of grass, a simple circle amidst strawberry plants with a couple logs where the campers and satyrs take their breaks when they work here. Jane finishes her story and we sit in comfortable silence for a few moments, only broken by the grunts of annoyance Jane makes while trying to get her plant powers to activate again. She’s been doing that a lot.
“Well that sucks,” I say finally. “Have you been having other dreams like it?”
Jane shrugs, the neon orange fabric of her shirt wrinkling on her shoulders. “One or two, I think. Last night’s was the first one I really remembered. ” She smiles out of the corner of her mouth. “I hardly ever remember my dreams. It used to upset me. I thought I was losing potential writing material.”
I laugh. It’s such a Jane thing to think, that I can’t help it. She goes quiet, like she’s reminiscing, and I picture a tiny version of Jane, sitting crossed-legged on her summer quilt, writing. I look at her now, scrunched up nose and big brown eyes. Oh gods, she must have been an adorable child.
“My mother used to say that my imagination was the eighth wonder of the world,” Jane says. She’s looking down the hill at the cabins, plant powers temporarily forgotten, and I remember her telling me about her mother, the first Elizabeth Penderwick, who came here and was a daughter of Demeter and loved opera. The Penderwick siblings’ beloved mother who died so young.
I move closer to Jane on the log. “I can understand why she’d say that.”
Jane smiles again, a little sad this time, a little absent, but full to the brim with love.
“Bet you she’s in Elysium,” I say softly. I explained the Underworld to Jane a couple weeks ago, and she’d gotten this same absent look on her face, that I now know means she’s thinking about her mother. Jane nods, now, then turns to me. “Could we talk about something else?” Her voice is quiet, her eyes a little shiny.
“Course,” I say. “Shall I regale you with tales of dimwittery at this camp in the years past?” I told her last week about the time some Hermes kids tried to order pizza to the camp, accidently causing Chiron to think we were under attack. Jane had nearly fallen off the bench laughing.
She grins now, but shakes her head. “Tell me what it’s like being an Oracle.” I give her a look. She’s asked me before and I never really know what to say. When I give prophecies, it’s like I black out. I’m taken over by another entity who shares my body. (“Like that lady in Suicide Squad ,” Leo had said when I tried to explain it to him once, but I’d refused to be compared to such a gods-fucking-awful movie). So, in a way, I don’t know what it’s like to be the Oracle.
As if reading my thoughts, Jane shakes her head. “Not that part. I’ve seen you all green and smokey, and I know you can’t feel it. I mean the other stuff. How did you know it was you? What did you have to do to become the Oracle? That kind of thing.” I relax a little. Jane’s asked me all sorts of weird questions about Greek mythology and the gods recently. She calls it “research for her book,” but sometimes I think she’s just nosy. It’s cute.
Jane shrugs and looks off into the distance. If you tilt your head a little you can kind of see the stables from here. We have fifteen more minutes to get there, according to my watch. I decide to take it easy. “Delphi is this weird ethereal spirit,” Jane continues, “but there’s also just everyday, Oracle you, who likes paint and denim and bagels.” At that, I laugh. “I actually don’t like bagels that much. I’m just late to breakfast so often that they’re usually the only things available.”
Jane pouts at me and plays with the bracelet tied around my wrist--the one she gave me. “You know what I mean! You know all this weird shit about me because my siblings don’t shut up at lunch, and I know stuff about you, like the denim thing, which I still think is funny by the way. But you’re also the freaking Oracle! Your dormant self lies waiting!” I laugh at her, and she rolls her eyes, but I see the corner of her mouth tilting up. “Rachel, that’s very cool!”
I give in. “Honestly, there’s not much to say, that’s why I don’t talk about it.” I pause. “Well no, it’s that a lot of the stuff beyond the obvious is actually sort of creepy and weird, and not in a good way. There’s stuff I try not to think about, is what I mean.”
The edge of her yellow bandana sticks up as Jane tilts her head at me. “That makes sense. You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.”
I shake my head. “No, it feels okay right now.” I mean it. Now that I’ve gotten into the swing of it, I do want to talk about it. Still, a small sigh escapes me. “I like being the Oracle, because that’s what brought me to a place where I feel like I belong and I have people who love me. It’s nice to know that I’m fulfilling my purpose in life.”
Jane pulls her knees up to her chest. “But?”
“But I also get lonely.” It comes out in a rush. “There are other oracles, but I didn’t know about any of them until the Apollo thing happened, and even then, they’re all supernatural beings--I know, I know, but not in the way I am. It’s not the same. Also, there are all these weird rules. Like I have to stay an unmarried virgin my whole life.”
“That’s fucked,” Jane says softly.
“I know! Chiron won’t even tell me why, just that it’s ‘the rules’” I let out an annoyed huff. “And, like, it’s not even that the idea itself bothers me. That’s pretty much what I was planning to do with my life anyway.”
“Same.”
“But it’s the principle of the thing!” I flick a strand of hair out of my face, offhandedly noticing that the tip of my pinky finger is slightly green. I ignore it. It’s not important. “Just because I don’t want to have sex or get married doesn’t mean it’s a fair rule to impose on me! Besides, why is it always the women in these things whose identities are tied up in who they do or don’t fuck? Last I checked, Grover didn’t have to sign an ‘I shalt not fornicate’ contract when he became Lord of the Wild!”
“Exactly!” Jane raises her hands and shouts up to the sky. “Don’t you fuckers realize we’re more than that?”
“The Hunters of Artemis, too!” I’m a jack-in-the-box, and something’s winding me up. “Thalia and Reyna send me letters all the time, and they seem really happy! Which is great!” I pause to emphasize the greatness of their happiness. My pinky is completely green, now. “But, they also had to make a stupid ‘ode of chastity,’ like I did!”
“Are you kidding me?” Jane’s hair flips as she turns to me. “I thought Artemis was one of the good ones!”
My voice lowers to a husky rumble, and I stare into the distance towards you, the reader. “In a broken system, there are no good ones. Abolish the police.” I clear my throat and my voice turns back to normal. “Sorry, zoned out for a second.” My green pinky has begun to vibrate.
“Happens to the best of us,” Jane’s voice is light and nonchalant. “And yeah, I know. Pretty much all of the gods have skeletons sitting on their shoulders, but it just seems out of character for her. I thought all of Artemis’s groups were supposed to be safe havens, not oppressive structures in their own right.”
I frown. “Yeah you’re right, that is weird. I’d never thought of it much beyond the gods having weird rules, but I wonder if something bigger is at play. The gods might be fucked up in the way that regular people are, and are undoubtedly responsible for all sorts of crap. But then there's more personal things, like the ‘chastity vows’ the Hunters and I had to take, and the fact that Nico was initially outed by Eros, and the weird unexplained eye condition that Piper had during some of her quests that made her eyes a bunch of bright, Eurocentric colors, rather than their natural brown. All sorts of other stuff, too.”
“Wow!” Jane says, sitting up straight on the grass. Her hand moves from where it was resting in her lap to cover her heart. “It’s almost like a bunch of genuinely good and inspiring material, such as including prominent queer people and characters of color in fun children’s fantasy, as well as having an immortal group of warrior women who support each other and are free from the gaze of men, was taken into the hands of a cis white man armed with unchecked misogyny and a fair amount of white Twitter feminism, both of which really showed when he tried to create an inclusive and empowering book series for children! Like yeah, it had its moments, and definitely some good characters, but overall, a lack of meaningful research in certain areas really made it fall flat!” Once again, I stare through the bindings of URLs and internet coding, now joined by Jane as we lock eyes with you, the reader. This time, we hold eye contact for nearly a minute, giving you time to read and process the long tangent spat out by this fanfic’s author, who, if we’re being honest, has gone just a tad off the rails right now. Finally, Jane and I look away from you, and resume our roles as fictional characters, still shaking off that strange cloud that comes with staring into the soul of those who give you life.
“Ugh, what’s going on with me today?” Jane groans at the same time I mutter, “What’s Twitter?” We turn to each other, blinking in the sunlight, then grin. This is normal. We’re fine. Jane looks up at the sky again. “I wonder if the gods are watching us. Maybe we should make them think we suck so they’ll leave you alone.”
I laugh as she sticks her tongue out, grinning wickedly at a nearby cloud. “Better yet, make them think we’re too powerful to be messed with,” I say. Jane sees me watching her and opens her mouth, sucking the cloud in between her teeth. The sky seems bluer in the space where it had been, and Jane’s eyes glitter with mirth as she swallows. “Mmm, tastes like sugar.” I giggle, feeling a small shiver on the top of my head. When I peer up, I see another cloud has floated over to me. I open my own mouth, and take it in, just as Jane did hers. “Sugar, yes. But there’s a touch of blood, too,” I say. Jane nods sagely. “What were we talking about?”
“The inherent misogyny in much of Greek mythology and the world of Camp Half-Blood in general.”
Jane nods again. “Right. A very important topic. It makes it weird when I’m writing sometimes. You know, cause I want to bring in Circe and Zeus and Apollo and all these fascinating characters, but there’s just so much bad stuff tied up with them that comes up when I research.” She looks down at our feet, which are standing in the midst of a strawberry patch. We seem to have been walking, crushing sweet summer strawberries as we go, which is odd because I don’t remember getting up. “You know Rachel, I’m feeling a bit strange.”
I look at her, and see an odd blankness in her warm brown eyes. “Now that you mention it, Jane, so am I.”
“My thoughts and words are my own,” Jane says, “But there’s something up with my body. I can’t really feel it.”
“I agree, I’ve honestly gone a bit numb.” I try to glance down at my fingers, wondering idly if they’ve gotten any more green, but find that my neck won’t bend.
Jane’s eyebrows furrow. “Yet, at the same time, I feel as though I could do anything. Grow another grass blade. Grow a flower. Grow a tree. Bend the world to my will if I wanted to.”
“Or is it the world bending me to its will.” I grin at my own philosophical point, but find that the smile won’t go away. Pretty fucking inconvenient, since the next thing I was going to bring up was part of the whole serious misogyny conversation. I decide to go for it anyway. “And I’m not the only one with weird rules!” Jane nods, as if this is a perfectly normal segway, and the only extraneous thought that floats through my mind as we find ourselves walking down a hill is how unfair it is that she still has control over her neck and I don’t. “Remember when I told you about the Hunters of Artemis?”
“Oh yeah! Your friends Reyna and Thalia, right?”
“Yeah, them! They send me letters sometimes, and seem really happy, which is great.” I pause, meaning to add emphasis, when I’m hit with a great sensation of deja-vu. “Wait a second, we already talked about this, didn’t we?” I try to remember, but something in my mind is rapidly melting. I cannot find it. I cannot find anything.
“Jane?” My voice quivers, and I squeeze my eyes shut. Oh gods, please let this be a dream. For a moment, I try to convince myself that it’s the Oracle of Delphi taking over, just like she did the other day and generally does a couple times a year. But I know that I’m lying. This is not what that feels like. “Jane, where are you?” I can barely move my mouth to say the words. I can feel nothing but the frozen fear of paralysis, of lost control. When I open my eyes, this other thing in my body has brought me to the edge of the forest. “Jane? Jane?” She could be right beside me, unable to speak, and I wouldn’t know because I can’t turn my head, can’t move my eyes, can barely even hear right now.
It’s okay, something says.
“Jane?” It’s not her voice. It’s no one’s voice.
It’s okay. You’re home.
With every cut the wooden oars made through the choppy ocean water, Sabrina knew she was getting closer. She could feel it in her bones, in her brain, a little voice that whispered in her ear. It had been three hours. Her body was worn down, energy levels dipping dangerously low, when she felt something scrape the bottom of her boat.
A rock.
Frantically, she peered through the fog that had begun to surround her boat a mile ago. The island. Had she finally made it?
As if answering her call, a peel of thunder rang out, and Sabrina’s boat began to fill with rain that pounded down from the sky. The storm from her dream. She rowed even faster, then, fear sparking a renewed strength in her tired muscles.
Just as Sabrina was about to reach the shore, a massive wave crashed over her, and her boat capsized. She came back up, sputtering, holding her sopping wet bag above her head. Another wave swept against Sabrina’s face, and she found herself spitting out a mouthful of saltwater. Finally, she washed up on the shore, heaving breaths raking through her lungs.
Sabrina blinked, pushing herself up onto her elbows. It was real. She was here.
She had made it.
FROM THE POV OF ROSALIND PENDERWICK
It’s been a pleasant day so far. Breakfast with my siblings and some of the Demeter cabin (though Jane did seem a bit absent-minded). Miranda, Florien, and Rio convinced me to practice some plant magic with them for a couple hours and I built up to growing a small sunflower. Lunch (again with Jane seeming distracted, though Rachel ate with us this time, which appeared to help). Then, Skye and Jeffrey disappeared with some of the older campers (supposedly for a regular game of soccer, but the unsettling gleam in their eyes had me doubting that was all there was too it), Jane and Rachel went to take a walk in the strawberry fields, and Batty and I were left to prepare for a pegasus riding lesson. If it had been up to Batty, the latter could have easily taken up the entire afternoon, but changing into durable pants and finding a bandana can only take so long.
After a somewhat restless hour, during which I grew three peonies and Batty rhapsodized about the stable of unicorns that another demigod camp apparently has, Batty and I arrive at the stable. We’re ten minutes early, and she’s been talking a mile a minute the whole time, not stopping from before. I swear I now know as much about pegasuses as she does. According to Rachel, the teacher today is Percy, her friend, who’s very responsible “when he puts his mind to it.” I wasn’t sure how to tell her that’s actually not very comforting, but Batty looked so excited and I figured there will be plenty of other people there, so. Why not. She’s been spending so much time there anyway.
Needless to say, I very much regret my decision now.
The stables are modest, made of wood and painted green, and I’ve been there several times by now. There’s a long line of stalls visible when we first walk in, but Batty skips straight to the far end, where a massive pegasus the color of a carrot pokes its head over the door and nuzzles Batty’s hair. She looks up at me with a smile that could melt anyone’s heart, and pats the horse on the nose. “Rosy, this is Queen Lotus Flower. Percy said we have a impenetrable bond.”
I look at the two of them with a questioning gaze. How can they both have the exact same puppy-dog eyes? I swear to god. The gods. All of them. “Batty, sweetheart. That horse is like ten feet tall.”
She nods enthusiastically. “I know, she’s so much taller than any other horse I’ve seen. Percy says she has the biggest wingspan of any horse at camp.”
I nod, slowly, wondering why my sister picked the biggest pegasus to fall in love with. At that moment, Percy pushes the door open. “Hey Batty! Ready for your lesson?” Batty leaves her post by Queen Lotus Flower to wrap her arms around my waist and nod. I look Percy over. He’s a few inches taller than me, with brown skin and curly hair. A beaded camp necklace, orange tshirt, and jeans. Weird arm tattoo aside, he’s one of the most normal-looking people at camp. I’ve only met him a couple times before, but, my nerves over Batty flying around on massive horses aside, I do trust him. Rachel seems to have a good taste in friends. Also, Batty likes him, and she’s still shy around a good number of Skye and Jane’s friends back in Cameron.
For the next few minutes, I watch as Percy instructs Batty on buckling Queen Lotus Flower’s giant saddle and looping the bridle over her nose. Not wavering a bit from the “lesson” aspect of all this, he steps back to let her show what she’s already learned from hanging around the stables so often, only stooping in to guide her when she gets confused. As the minutes tick by, more people show up for the lesson: three other students, and a good sized crowd of people who just like watching the pegasuses. By then, I’m seated on the grass outside the stables, soaking in the blistering sun and watching as Percy (seated atop a wiry black pegasus who Batty pointed out as Blackjack) darts around the large dusty enclosure, making final preparations for the lesson.
Skye and Jeffrey show up then, and sit on either side of me. I want to ask them where Jane and Rachel are, but they’re talking non-stop about a game they just played in the woods with some of the other campers, only switching the subject when Percy and Blackjack return and they begin discussing whether or not it should be scientifically possible for a horse to fly.
Just as Batty and Queen Lotus Flower begin a gentle trot around the enclosure, I feel a tap on my shoulder, and hear the familiar sound of Tommy’s chuckle. “She’s got a weird knack for that,” he says. I nod, grinning.
It’s been good with us. We’ve had breakfast together a few times, even played a game of basketball one afternoon. Our conversations aren’t the same as they used to be, and there’s a sense of newness that feels cold and strange every so often. But it’s good. It feels right. At least for now, this feels like where we’re supposed to be.
As Percy starts demonstrating how to take flight, I look around again. Jane and Rachel still aren’t here. They promised to come. (“For moral support!” Jane had said. “Wouldn’t miss it,” Rachel had added with a smile). I try to push it out of my head. This lesson is a big deal. Batty’s going to be flying.
She leans forward on Queen Lotus Flower’s neck.
They begin to run, moving together like a single being.
Just as they burst into the air, Batty’s euphoric smile lighting up the sky, Katie grabs my shoulders from behind. I shush her so I can lean forward and watch Batty silhouetted against the pegasus’s wide orange wings.
“Rosalind. Rosalind, guys. ” Something about the panic in Katie’s voice makes me turn around. Her usually tied back hair is loose and her clothes rumpled, giving the impression that she was dragged out of bed for this. (Some part of my brain distantly remembers her saying she was going to take a nap). Skye and Jeffrey turn around, too.
“What, what’s happening?” I reach out my hands, trying to calm her as she collapses into a squat, breathing heavily.
“Billie… found me in the cabin… had been looking for you guys… been running all over the camp… lucky I remembered about the riding lesson…”
Jeffrey leans over and puts his hands on her shoulders. She stares down at the dirt while her breathing levels.
“Katie, what are you saying? Why were you and Billie looking for us?”
She looks up, and I see that her forehead is drawn into well-worn creases of worry. “Jane and Rachel have gone into the woods.”
Something was wrong. Sabrina crouched on the wet sand, straining to see through the heavy rain. In her dream there had definitely been someone else on the island. She remembered the hunched figure, the sound of sobs leaking through the rain.
But she’d circled the shore at least twice by now, and there was nobody to be found. “Am I late or something?” she wondered aloud. Somehow, she’d gotten that dream It felt like it had been sent to her. Why did it show a person when there was no one?
Sabrina sighed and began to traipse inland, tucking a knife in her pocket. It wasn’t a big island, and she might as well find some shelter aside from her boat, which was now overturned somewhere on the beach. Circe lived here, didn’t she? There must be some sort of roof, especially if this kind of weather was standard.
Or maybe this was just a random island and there was no Aeaea and Sabrina’s dream had just been the unhinged work of her unconscious mind.
There was a small grassy hill set aside from the sand, which Sabrina crawled up with the determination of a dying warrior. Something was pushing her back. An invisible force, a last crumb of survival instinct, plain old fatigue, she wasn’t sure. But something wanted her out of here, and it pushed back harder and harder as she climbed.
She let out a cry of frustration, clawing at the ground, at the air, at whatever this goddamn thing was, and found a renewed burst of strength that pulled her to the top of the hill. Once there, the force that pushed back ebbed a little, like it was giving up. Sabrina let herself relax, and simply took in the view for a moment.
The hill she lay on top of gave way to a deep valley, sprawling and green. In one corner, there was a cluster of trees that looked healthy and comfortable, despite being on a random Greek island in the middle of the ocean. A modest garden lay next to it, somehow appearing unaffected by the rain, and a narrow river wound around the whole scene.
There was also a house.
Sabrina wasn’t sure what she might have expected from the lair of an infamous Greek enchantress, but it wasn’t this.
She hauled herself up on the hill and started down, rushing through the rain onto a wide wooden porch. There was a large stone vat of something dark and crumbly, with a heavy looking staff of sorts leaning against it. The door to the house was short, and Sabrina heard it scrape on the floor when she pushed it open.
The scene awaiting her was surprisingly cozy when she stepped inside. There was a fire in the hearth and rows upon rows of little viles arranged on a set of shelves beside it. A broom leaned against the wall. Sabrina looked around, noting the way that the rain didn’t make any sound as it thrashed against the roof and window, and the almost drug-like stupor that threatened to take over her brain, whispering that everything was fine, she was safe, nothing bad could happen to her.
Sabrina had encountered hypnosis before, and it only ever made her more jittery.
There was an open hatch in the floor with stairs that lead into darkness. She followed them down, feeling the air grow cooler with every step. Sabrina was quiet, taking tiny steps on her toes, and wincing when one of the stairs creaked. She didn’t know what was down there, and she didn’t want to find out the hard way. But there were no arrows flying up from the space below, no sounds of footsteps or slashes of swords.
Sabrina stepped onto a dirt floor and let herself exhale, shuffling along until her toe hit something hard. Only seasoned reflexes made her reach for the knife in her pocket instead of crying out in fear. She knelt down and squinted in the darkness, trying to see what she’d hit.
A leg.
She frowned, shaking it until she heard a low growl. “Stop that.” She stopped.
“Who are you?” Sabrina leaned closer. If they hadn’t killed her yet she was probably safe.
Instead of answering, they reached out a hand. Sabrina could see a gold ring on the thumb that glinted in a little sliver of light that had crept down from the room above. “Pull me up,” the figure said. “I’ve been paralyzed by the witch.”
Helping the stranger sit turned out to be no simple feat. They were tall and muscular, wearing a cape and a heavy metal chest plate. “The witch?” she questioned, propping them up against one of the cellar’s dirt walls. Her eyes were beginning to adust to the dark, and she could just make out their sharp chin sticking out as their head lolled back.
The figure made a noise. “The witch, the sorceress, the woman. Whatever you want to call her. I figure she sent you down too?” They snorted. “Good luck. I told Zeus not to sent mortals, but does he ever listen? You’re gonna die.”
Sabrina tried to piece together what she could from all this. The witch must be Circe, unless she’d wound up on an entirely different island. And if Circe was going around paralyzing people, then something must be going on. She must be hiding something. As for the person in front of her, Sabrina wasn’t sure who they were. By the way they talked about Zeus, and casually said “mortals,” she’d guess some sort of god? As if that narrowed it down. She’d have to be careful.
“Why did she paralyze you?”
Another weird gutteral noise. “She didn’t like my offer. It’s not the first time this has happened.”
She was growing impatient. Why’d he have to be so vague? “What?”
“Yeah, I don’t know why he always sends me. I don’t think he trusts me. He’d rather me stay her paralysed in the basement of a witch than come back home.”
Sabrina let out an exasperated sigh. This wasn’t working and she needed answers. A whole coast of people with mythology-shaped holes in their memories awaited her. “You’re going to need to be a little more specific. I don’t think we’re on the same page.”
The figure sounded confused. “What do you mean? Don’t you know who I am?”
She leaned forward and inspected them in the darkness. “No. No I don’t.”
They slid their eyes down to her face. “I am the god Apollo. I came here for Circe and she did this to me.”
“What? Why?”
The stairs creaked behind Sabrina and she felt a long nail drag up her back. “I just want to be left alone,” said a voice as deep and powerful as the smell of red wine. “You don’t mind, do you?” Before Sabrina could grab her knife and turn around, before she could even scream, strong arms had surrounded her shoulders and a hand was clamping a damp cloth over her nose and mouth. Shock made her breath in, sharply, and she smelled the sweetness of sleeping drugs.
A heartbeat, a brief struggle, and Sabrina Starr was gone.

hello!!! here's your prompt: think sleeping beauty except when knight!will goes to find the sleeping princess he instead finds nico, definitely not asleep. nico's parents locked him up with all the crazy thorn bushes and stuff because he was too "dangerous" and they came up with the sleeping princess thing as an excuse to make a maximum security prison for him. also nico can turn into a dragon and that's why they locked him up
oh that sounds very fun, and so as to not just have this in my ask box forever and somehow forget about it, I’m gonna do some plot points rn (because I don’t feel like working on the elams au I was so excited about an hour ago lmao)
a thing: I dug really deep into backstory instead of plot, as I do with everything lmao
nico mostly spends his days in the dilapidated castle summoning ghosts and skeletons and playing card games with them - sometimes he gets news of the outside world, but not a whole lot of people die near the castle. mostly knights, and Nico finds them all pretty annoying
will’s been training to be a knight ever since he was old enough - his father, Sir Apollo, was once one of the strongest and most trusted knights of the good King Zeus. at least, until he was cast out of the palace for crimes against the crown. will just wants to be like his father, make the king proud.
“your father made some horrible mistakes, William. but he was a brave and strong knight - I believe you could become the better version of him.” - mr zeus
will lives by those words literally for like seven years
and then he hears through the grapevine that there’s a prince who was cast into an eternal sleep by a wicked witch (who turns out to be the bastard princess Hazel, who is not at all wicked and just wants to protect her brother) and he’s like “hey, saving that prince would totally boost my status up and maybe I’ll get a cute bf out of it too”
our boy is completely unaware that the good King Zeus and his wife Queen Hera actually sent Nico (their nephew/adopted son after Hades and Persephone died in a raid sometime after Hazel’s birth) sent Nico there because his powers were getting out of control
also they may have had a hand in Bianca’s death - but hey, they didn’t know the war on the eastern front was so bad. yes, they sent her regiment, the hunters, there, but they didn’t think anyone would die
so Will visits his friends for some supplies and heads out w/ absolutely no clue where to go except some vague directions young General Reyna (famous for climbing so high into the palace ranks despite not being part of the large extended family - and, of course, being close to the young prince, the poor girl, however does she feel? King Zeus was to have them married, she must be heartbroken) gave him
will goes and fights and gets in (and he maybe meets Hazel and her new coven at some point - Calypso, Circe, Hecate) and then he sees Nico and he’s like “hey what the fuck you’re not asleep”
Nico’s like “hahah ye my uncle thinks I’m going to kill him in his sleep and like at this point I might, his son’s way cooler than him anyways”
they talk, stuff happens, Will’s like “cool ok I’m getting you out of here” and it somehow happens
so they meet up w/ Hazel and her gals and collect some friends and Artemis too (she’s just like uhhh dad’s been kinda mean recently don’t like that) and they storm the palace and Nico gives a big and dramatic speech and in the end Zeus and Hera yields the throne to the next in line - one of the princes or princesses aka Jason, Thalia, Percy, or Nico (literally none of them want it but Nico gets out w/ “hey I've been trapped for like twelve years idk what's happening” and Thalia’s like “y’all know I’ve got an army to run” so Jason n Percy are like “u no what we can figure this out later”)
and then Nico and will are like “hey I kinda really like you”
“do you like like me” “yes you gremlin I like like you” and then they kiss and everything is all well and good and happy
wow this is gonna turn out to be really long isn’t it :// I'm probably not gonna finish in time here’s to hoping tho?

Why can't I hold all these cool stories?
CURRENT CRAVINGS: Please see this GDoc, because I have some plots I’d like to try! I’m primarily interested in original plots and characters; setting them in original worlds or fandom worlds is fine. I am not interested in playing canons other than as side characters/world filler as of right now.
DISCORD: KYLO REN AT CHILI’S#8808
TIMEZONE: CST
PERSONAL PREFERENCES
I’m over eighteen, and would prefer my partners are, too. This doesn’t mean I’m interested in NSFW-heavy plots; I do not write smut. It just means I’m more comfortable writing and interacting with other adults.
I consider myself to be lit-adv. I tend to enjoy partners in the lit+ category, but as long as you’re an enthusiastic and engaging partner, I don’t care about perfect grammar. I would rather write with someone just as involved and excited as I am, than I would with someone who isn’t very engaging but knows exactly what to do with obscure punctuation.
I’m not interested in playing only one type of character or playing against only one type of character. I typically don’t enjoy writing with people who are only interested in playing one type of relationship dynamic or one kind of character (such as only m/f, playing the female, or m/m, playing the “bottom”). I have no problem with these dynamics or characters at all, nor do I have an issue playing against them. I just prefer more variety, compromise, and opportunity.
OOC chatter is really important to me. I can’t write with someone that I don’t feel like I can get to know. I’m looking for friends, not a faceless reply robot. I won’t communicate over any medium but Discord. I’ve tried Kik, Hangouts, etc.; they just don’t stick for me. If you would prefer first contact be through email, you can shoot me a quick message and your handle to [email protected].
I’m fine with threading in a GDoc or a server, but I will not thread over DMs. It’s difficult to have OOC chatter and the thread over the top of each other.
If you’re looking for a partner that writes a reply a day without fail, that’s not me. I prefer that we don’t have “posting schedules” or set posting times, because I find that it turns writing into a chore. It’s great if you reply immediately, and it’s totally okay if you need a week to figure something out! You’re absolutely free to poke me. I’m not always the most mindful. However, I’m not going to reply every day. Three to four times a week is my frequency.
PLOT PREFERENCES
I’m interested in both fandom and original settings, and I’m down for playing both canon characters and OCs. I don’t necessarily prefer one or the other.
I definitely prefer canon doubling from my partners in fandom plots; I mesh better with people who do a little give-and-take when it comes to that. If you only play one canon character or only play OCs against canons and won’t play canons, I don’t think we’ll work.
I can play as many characters as needed, whether it’s just one or it’s six. Whatever our story calls for, I can manage that. In fact, I would love to play multiple “main” pairings so we can both get what we want, versus a single main pairing (unless it’s a pairing/dynamic we both like equally well). I find more than one facet to a plot really interesting, and multiple characters helps flesh out a story’s dimensions.
I’m absolutely interested in joining groups, so please don’t be shy about asking me to participate in plots with more than two players. So long as they don’t involve me writing sexual NSFW, we’re Gucci; everyone else writing NSFW isn’t a deal breaker for me.
Multiple threads and plots at the same time are no issue for me. In fact, I love the idea that we click so well that we just can’t stop coming up with good ideas! So definitely don’t be afraid to pitch something new to me, whether it’s because you want to switch gears (and drop a thread for another), or want to do everything at once.
Romance is a must for me! I prefer slow and agonizing journeys to get there, but my attention is best held by romantic chemistry between characters.
I can provide writing samples upon request, though I never require them from my partner. Additionally, I have some plots written out if you’re interested in that sort of thing. Otherwise, we can brainstorm together!
FANDOMS
I’m very much a fandom player. I’m always down for AUs, or inserting our own characters into the plots of fandoms! This is in no way a complete list; never be afraid to ask if I’m into something! I’ve probably forgotten a hundred things I love.
Most of my fandoms will have favorite canon characters listed with them, both who I like playing and playing against; you’re always welcome to ask about others not listed.* There’s a good chance I’m pretty good with them!
*I will play OCs in every fandom, but I might not play canons in every fandom.
ALWAYS

NOT SURE, BUT WILLING TO EXPLORE
Avatar: the Last Airbender (particularly Zutara), Eragon, Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiznaiver, The Legend of Zelda, Soul Eater, Steven Universe, Tokyo Ghoul, Twilight, Yuri!!! on Ice
GENRES
For the most part, I’ll genuinely play most any genre! Of course, everyone says that, but then they shoot down all your suggestions because everyone has stuff they don’t like doing. I’ll try to make this as brief as I can, and know that if something isn’t listed, but you’re pretty sure (based on everything else) that I’m into it, then definitely let me know what you’re thinking!
SETTINGS
A/B/O (I will not play only alphas for only omegas, nor will I play overly trope-y, non-con, “boys love”/"yaoi” plots.), Age of Sail, alien worlds/alien invasions, celebrity, fairytales and mythology (including “inspired by” retellings), fantasy (including medieval, urban, and high fantasy), alt-historical and modern royalty, mutants/gifted, organized crime, science fiction (especially including aliens), some historical (excluding medieval, colonial, and the Roaring Twenties/Great Depression), Southern gothic, supernatural, Victorian (especially the London ton), post-apocalyptic
PAIRING DYNAMICS
arranged marriage (I’m always down for slinging our characters together, whether or not they want to. It’s always a bonus if their families hate each other.), enemies to lovers (I love conflict of any sort, especially romantic!), human x not-human (The not-human must be sentient.), bad guy x good guy, intellectual x emotional, captive x captured (especially when the captured is willful, annoying, and full of fight), step-siblings (I don’t play step-parents x step-kids, so please don’t ask!), status/power imbalances (such as characters being from different socioeconomic strata or different ranks/positions in an organization), celebrity x bodyguard (I’m okay with the celebrity being the son/daughter/offspring of someone famous!), famous x not famous, rivals of any sort, unwilling traveling companions, unwilling soulmates
If any of this interests you, please feel free to reach out to me however! I’m really looking forward to hearing from you!

So I’ve been dead in the grave pretty much for the last 2 days because our area’s WiFi completely stopped (some animal chewed through the main router) so it dented my plans a little bit. Needless to say I’m working on another part to the Mafia AU, staring an intro to my Circe!Nico, and I am also working on two little sketches for both.

SETTINGS
A/B/O (I will not play only alphas for only omegas, nor will I play overly trope-y, non-con, “boys love”/"yaoi" plots.), Age of Sail, alien worlds/alien invasions, celebrity, fairytales and mythology (including “inspired by” retellings), fantasy (including medieval, urban, and high fantasy), alt-historical and modern royalty, mutants/gifted, organized crime, science fiction (especially including aliens), some historical (excluding medieval, colonial, and the Roaring Twenties/Great Depression), supernatural, Victorian (especially the London ton), post-apocalyptic
I'm really looking forward to hearing from you!

The EagleOwl Swap Part 4A :House of Hades Au Part 1
Don't worry y'all, I'm alive, I was just busy with school :( I have like three projects due on Friday, but I'm done with them so time to continue the swap. Also My Au has veered off course since Mark Of Athena, so beware.
So, Nico tells them two bad news. 1) Apparently the romans have covered a lot of ground, and are now really near the CHB borders, and there is some sort of army gathering near the outskirts of the camp, with all the monsters getting killed getting reformed very quickly thanks to the doors of death being opened. 2)To close the doors of death, someone has to close it from the other side, which was a system implemented after Gaia's enemies (demigods and satyrs) started coming back from the dead as well.
Also Nico wasn't trapped by Gaia in this timeline, and Nico is healing from the trauma that was the Titan's curse better than original, so he has a much more healthier mental state, especially after coming out to Will and some campers at CHB and them be extremely understanding. In fact, it was kinda reminiscent of him pre- Bianca's death. Nico needs a break, y'all. Cue adorable reunion between Nico and Annabeth.
"By the way, there was this giant gaining on you, so I sorta fought it. Didn't work though, so I distracted it with this bomb the Hephaestus cabin made" "Wait that was you?" Anyway since they sorta figured out why Percy left, they decided to press the advantage and head towards the doors of death, much to Annabeth and Nico, who just found out Percy's state, chargin
So they have to split up; Frank, Piper , Jason would be sent to reason with the romans, carrying the Athena Parthenous with them Nico tailing them, or stall them at the least, the others to head out to the doors of death, while Leo, Hazel, Annabeth and Reyna head to the doors of death to try to close them.
Hazel gets to shine in this one, because she tackles with the new lease of life she just gained, and she hasn't given it much thought with Frank around, but now she's giving it some serious thought and she does not know what to do with it. And she at first decides not to give too much thought to it because why would she need to, she's probably going to die in this quest, but after she almost dies during the many battles they face while getting to the doors of death, she realises that she's really scared of death and start actually considering what she gonna do in life. Her arc's pretty much knowing that it's fine not knowing what to do in life, but as long as you have your loved ones at your side supporting you every way, it doesn't really matter, for life is sea of possibilities, and it's a way better life than what she would have gotten in the 1940s.
Meanwhile, while Frank, Piper, Jason, meet Eros and boom, Nico get's outed. Very horribly. Of course, Piper and Nico have a bonding moment after that, while Jason completely eversicates Eros, and they become part of Nico's protection squad. Nico jokes that they have to check in with the president, who's Percy, and the mood falls after that. The vetereans from CHB tend to rave about Percy a lot, but Jason, Piper and Frank just don't get it. So Nico starts giving them little tidbit during the Second Titan War Era. (This will be plot relevant later on)
Meanwhile, back on the Argo 2, they crash-land, thanks to Clytius, Hectate's opposite. They do a little bit of monologuing, before they bring out the big guns- Percy. Hazel and Leo is on fighting Clytius duty, Annabeth and Reyna are on fighting Percy Duty. Percy starts pointing out all the insecurities Annabeth has, "forgotten child of Athena' because Gaia told him to do so, but Reyna point out all the good parts of Annabeth, cause ya she's still mad at her, for the whole Circe Island debcale, but she's slowly forgiving her (Percy, not so much)
Percy manages to knock out Reyna, but then Annabeth starts pleading with him, "Please Percy, you can fight it, I know I can" and he seems to fight it a bit but then Gaia comes swooping in and destroys all the effort Annabeth made. Damn.
Thankfully, before Percy kills Annabeth and Reyna, Leo starts raining the entire artillery of the Argo 2, and while Percy's distracted by that, Annabeth, Reyna, Leo and Hazel, who has temporarily subdued Clythius, rush towards the doors of death. Percy manged to survive that show of gunfire because he has the heel of achilles, which in this timeline still hasn't been taken away yet.
Piper, Frank, Jason and Nico reach the roman battalions nearing outskirts of New York around dusk, showing the Athena Parthenous to themcarried by a roman demigod of war and the greek demigod of love, as a sign of peace. Then they start talks with the romans, making connections with them and how the greeks fought bravely during the Titan War, while they fought at Mount Othrys. The romans start doubting their stance against the greeks, and Nico's chiming in, the guy that pops up to the roman camp from time to time, which Frank,( a newbie), Piper (barely stepped foot at the roman camp) and Jason (lost his memories) look surprised at. Octavian though manipulates the crowd for hating on Jason, saying he abadoned them and whatnot, and the peace talks are broken. However, most romans are not dead set on killing the greeks anymore, so while they won't make peace with them, they opt to not engage them for now. Octavian seethes at that, by realising he can't change anything about that, resolves to try to motivate the romans to attack the greeks tmr.
Leo calls up the Argo 2 gang at CHB, telling them they need backup, but since the solstice is nearing in like two weeks and they haven't made peace with the romans, they decided to send only Jason there. Nico decides to join him as well, so off they go on the storm pegasi.
Why did they need reenforcements? Well because guarding the temple where the doors of death is are a bunch of monsters, and they just finished their battle with Clythius and Percy sooo they decided to make camp for the night while they wait for Jason and Nico to come. Of course, halfway through their waiting time, Dionysus shows up, saying something about making their reenforcement get a speed boost and mention that the only way to break the very strong enchantments on Percy, and clear atleast one of their obstacles, is to go back to Circe Island, which Reyna visbly groans at. Annabeth's curious, but before she can prod further, some monsters spot them, Dionysus peaces out of there and they start fighting against the mosnters.
Also meanwhile we jump to Nico complaining about the horse travelling too fast thank to Mr D, and we actually have a bonding moment where Jason helps Nico get over his fear of fallinng off the horse, and never really fitting in.
Just when Leo's about to die, Jason and Nico show up and they finally enter the temple. Hazel vs Clythius showdown, with Hectate helping Hazel to kill him. Meanwhile, the doors of death are still open, so the monsters are still arriving by the horde, and Percy's here as well.
Nico, Reyna and Jason fighting Percy, while Annabeth, Leo and Hazel are left to deal with the monsters. Realising they have to close the doors on the other side soon, or they will die due to the sheer numbers of monsters getting revived, Jason makes the sacrifice to enter the house of hades and close it from the inside. Of course everyone, especially Reyna and Leo, who know him the most, object. Nico, doesn't want to lose a brother so quickly after just getting to know him while Annabeth doesn't want to lose Jason who she's sees as a little brother. Jason giving a bittersweet smile as he walks into the elevator, and the doors shut on him. They start killing out the monsters, and it looks like Jason suceedded, in living long enough to close the doors on Tartarus Side, because no more monsters coming, but Nico and Hazel feel his death soon after, and after hearing that we get a very heartwrenching moment with Leo crying, screaming, and promising revenge on Gaia
There's a word limit I'm about to reach, so i guess we will be extending the HOH Au to a part 2 then.
Previous Part -> The Mark Of Athena Rewrite
Next Part -> The House of Hades Part 2 Rewrite

PJO Arranged Marriage AU Guide
Below the cut is a guide for my PJO Arranged Marriage/Royalty AU.  I’ll continue to update this post as I write the AU and I’ll reblog it every time I update to keep it easy to find on my blog.
Have a question about the AU or can’t remember a tiny detail that was said 3 fics ago?  Shoot me an ask or leave a comment in the fic and then I’ll either answer you or add it here.  I know what’s going on, but sometimes I might forget that you guys don’t know everything I do about this universe!
Locations/Peoples
Location names are, for the most part, the Roman name of the ruler.  Character names are Greek and locations are Roman.  (I will break this rule a few times, e.g, when there isn’t a Greek/Roman counterpart or the person in charge is a demigod.  I equate Enyo and Bellona in this au, even though HoO states they are not the same).
The three major countries (or the Romanus Terris):
Pluto -- Ruled by King Hades.
Location -- far in the north.
Demonym -- Adj: Plutonian; N: Pluton, Plutons
Economy -- Mining, tends to lead innovation and invention, jewelry, economy collapsed after illness called Scarlet Delirium
Major landmarks -- 5 major rivers: Acheron, Styx, Cocytus, Lethe, and Phlegethon (which leads to some very nice natural hot springs)
Major Cities/Duchies --
The HQ of the Sorority, Venadica, is in Pluto’s borders (but is not technically part of Pluto).
The Royal City is Divitia (which comes from the word for “riches” the ancient Pluton language -- aka, Latin).  It is sometimes called “the city of riches,” making Hades the “father of riches.”  (Just to tie in Dis Pater).  Divitia is in the Duchy Angelus (yup, you guessed it, Nico’s going to be the duke of Angelus when he’s old enough).  (The palace is called the Palatium de Divitae, or Palace of Riches, and one of the royal family’s other estates is called the Privilla).
Also duchies of Trivia, Somnus, and Vulcan, with the duchess/dukes Hecate, Hypnos, and Hephaestus.
Misc. notes --
In many senses, the most conservative of the three.
Old Pluton (which is really just Latin) is the language used in many official affairs/old names.
The coldest of the three countries in the au
Jupiter -- Ruled by Emperor Zeus.
Location -- South of Pluto.  There is a range of mountains along the western border.  On the east, it borders the sea.
Demonym -- Juvian or Jovian. I can’t decide on a spelling, and neither can they.
Economy -- Farming, trade, art and entertainment
Major landmarks -- Mount Olympus, upon which the imperial city was built.  The mountain range, Monti Ouri, is on the western border.
Major Cities/Duchies --
The imperial city, Olympus, resides in the Duchy of Juno, which is near the coast.
Apollo is the Duke of Diana.  Mars, Ares’ duchy, is along the western border, where the mountains are.  Demeter is the Duchess of Ceres, which is located far in the south.  Other duchies: Ventus (Duke Aeolus), Mercury (Duke Hermes).
Misc. notes --
Largest of the three.
Most diverse population (aside from Venadica) which can be seen in major cities like Olympus.
The Jovian language is spoken mostly everywhere, as the trade language and technical language.
Neptune -- Ruled by King Poseidon.
Location -- A large island and its surrounding keys, located east of Jupiter.
Demonym -- Neptonian, Neptonians
Economy -- Fish, fine fabrics, dye, pearls
Major landmarks -- Prata Pontia (Latin: Prata = Medows, Pontia = of Pontus.  Named this because Romans sometimes called the sea Prata Neptunia), the sea separating Neptune from the mainland, bordering Neptune and Jupiter.
Major Cities/Duchies --
The Royal city is Salacia, located in the duchy Jafilius (Ja = shortened “Jack,” filius = son in Latin).
Duchies Venus, Bacchus, and Aeaea for Aphrodite, Dionysus, and Circe.
Misc. notes --
Most fashion-forward nation, sometimes considered a bit risque.  If Pluto is the most conservative, the Neptonians are the opposite.
Other groups:
The three main countries are collectively called the Romanus Terris (Roman Lands) because they share a religion and the Sorority binds them together, making them culturally similar and politically allied (mostly).  It helps that they’re all right next to each other.  But there are other countries, as well.
Within the Romanus Terris, there are several ethnic groups, like the satyrs and the nereids.  I’ll write a more detailed section about them when I’m not as exhausted as I am right now.
Southwest of the the Monti Ouri and across a desert is Aegyptia, which, obviously, is Egypt (this is the word that the populus romanus - Roman people - know for it; the Aegyptios have their own language).
Across the Prata Pontia and far to the north is the cold, mountainous Skatinavia, where the Norse live.  It is actually comprised of three main islands, the Scandiai islands.  Annabeth was originally from Skatinavia before Athena took her in as a ward.  (I chose this spelling because it was the one used by Pliny the Elder, so I think it’s the first known Latinization of the Protogermanic name. Credit also goes to Pliny for the idea of making it three islands, the idiot didn’t know they’re peninsulas.  HA! I kid, I kid.)
So is Scatinavia spelled with a “c” or a “k”? Lol, idk. I keep changing my mind, but probably “c.”
Noble Hierarchy
The hierarchical setups of the monarchies are modeled after the British monarchy, with some influence from the Holy Roman Empire.
Basically: King/Queen/Emperor/Empress are the highest positions, followed by Duke/Duchess, and then Earl/Countess.
A Marquis/Marquise is basically equivalent (or perhaps slightly superior) to a Earl/Countess, but the county (or more accurately, the march) is located on the border.
There is little social mobility in these societies; in other words, you stay in the class you’re born into.  Marriage can bring about small changes in status, but not large ones (e.g., a commoner cannot marry a king).
Notable exceptions: as a consor, knight, or soror, you have an achieved rather than ascribed status, but this is not transferable. In other words, if you are knighted or study to become a consor, you gain more respect/power, but you do not pass this status onto your children. Your title dies with you.
Even as a consor, knight, or soror, the class you were born into still matters. For example: it is questionable whether Reyna would have been picked out to be Nico’s adviser if she hadn’t been born into a noble family (of course, she’s perfectly qualified, regardless of status.)
Currency
As of right now, I’m still working this out, but the Romanus Terris all use the same coinage, which is based on ancient Roman currency
Mythology/Religion
The Sorority is structurally somewhat modeled after the Papacy and the Catholic hierarchy.
Sorority terminology:
Consor -- A normal person (i.e., not a Soror) who volunteers services or studies with the Sorority, usually refers to a student/philosopher/scientist kind of person.  There isn’t a direct translation because it is a very culturally specific position.  Consors are often men, married women, and others who cannot or do not wish to join the Sorority.  Affiliated with the Sorority, but not technically recognized. Comes from a Latin word for “fellow.”
Matestra -- Leader of the Sorority (basically the Pope), currently Artemis, comes from the Latin words for “mother” and “mistress.”
Puella -- Priestess in training, one who has not yet taken the oath.  Comes from the Latin word for “girl.”
Soror -- Priestess, comes from the Latin word for “sister”
Soror Princepa -- High priestess
Sororal -- Relating to the sisters or sisterhood, like the word papal relates to the papacy.  Again, coming from the Latin word for “sister”
Sorority -- Priesthood/sisterhood.  You can probably guess what this means in Latin.
Venadi -- Another term for priestesses, referring to their search for knowledge.  Comes from the Latin word for “hunter.”
Venadica -- (Ember’s pronunciation: /vɛn’ædɪcə/) The HQ of the Sorority, similar to the Vatican.  Like “venadi,” this comes from the Latin word for “hunter.”  It is also called “The City of Enlightenment” because the Sorority leads a constant search for knowledge, which is often informally referred  to as “the hunt.”
Besides the Catholic influences there are also Greco-Roman influences, more with regard to worship.
The deities in this AU are mostly Greek primordial deities (or protogenoi). Basically everything is the same as Greek mythology until the Titans come in. I will take a few creative liberties, though, and sources are inconsistent with each other. I use Riordanverse as my main source, but not all the time. So if something is inconsistent with Riordan canon or with Hesiod or some other scholar, don’t worry, I know. I chose to do it that way because it’s my au and I can do whatever I want.
Like Greek and Roman Mythologies, religions don’t necessarily “conflict” with each other. In ancient times, when new deities from other cultures were discovered, they were added to the pantheon. The populus romanus used to be several different tribes who worshiped several different deities and over time they added to each other’s pantheons, eventually becoming one big society with an organized mythology.
For the most part, if a name isn’t listed here they either a) don’t exist in this au, b) don’t exist in this au yet, or c) exist but as a mortal.
The protogenoi:
Aeon -- Protogenos of eternity.
Aether -- Protogenos of light.  Consort of Hemera.
Anake -- Protogenos of inevitability. Consort of Chronos.
Chaos -- Protogenos of the void (genderless).  Parent of Gaea, Nyx, Akhlys, Ouranos, Pontos, Tartarus, Erebos, and Eros.
Chronos -- not to be confused with Kronos (who is referred to as Saturn in this au to differentiate).  Protogenos of time.  Consort of Anake.
Elpis -- Protogenos of hope.
Erebos -- Protogenos of darkness.  Consort of Nyx.  Father of Hemera, Aether, Moros, Ker, and Thanatos.
Eros -- Protogenos of love and sex.
Gaea -- Protogenos of the earth.  Consort of Ouranos.  Viewed as a protective mother figure by mortals.
Hemera -- Protogenos of day.  Consort of Aether.
Ker -- Protogenos of painful and violent death.
Moros -- Protogenos of doom.
Nyx -- Protogenos of night.  Consort of Erebos.  Mother of Hemera, Aether, Moros, Ker, Thanatos and Akhlys.
Ouranos -- Protogenos of the sky.  Consort of Gaea.
Pontos -- Protogenos of the sea.
Tartarus -- Protogenos of the Tartarus pit.  Not the devil; just the guy you don’t want to meet.  Sometimes also called the protector of the pit, like a jail keeper.
Thanatos -- Protogenos of peaceful death.
Legends
Saturn and the Titans -- a team of 12 mortal sons and daughters of Ouranos and Geae, who, in an attempt to overthrow the protogenoi and seize control for themselves, threw their brothers and sisters (the cyclopses and the hundred-handed-ones, etc.), into Tartarus, leaving the protogenoi defenseless.  The war was said to have lasted decades.  In the end, one of the titans, Rhea, returned to her mother, Gaea, and helped her trick and defeat Saturn.  Rhea was killed in the process and died in her mother’s arms.
A reminder that the titan Kronos is called Saturn in this au to avoid confusion with Kronos (titan) and Chronos (protogenos).
Rhea and Gaea, particularly the Gaea clining to Rhea’s dying body, are often the subjects of pieces of art.  They have this cool mother/daughter-protectors-of-the-world theme.
This story is also the origin of the phrase “a hundred hands dealt a hundred poor cards,” because the hundred-handed-ones got a really crappy ending.
Yes, Ouranos lost his balls.  “Ouranos’ ballsack” (or variations thereof) is a vulgar, but common, exclamation.  So is “Gaea’s rocky mountains,” btw.
Remember when Nico and Will went to the opera to see Mutilationem Ouranos?
....yup.
Feasts, festivals, and other celebrations:
Chronalia -- A harvest festival, dedicated to Chronos (not Kronos) to honor the passage of time and the end of waiting. Held in Ceres (Jupiter).
Erotia -- A fertility/love holiday, held in honor of Eros.  Takes place in Venus (Neptune) during spring.
Rhegalia -- Celebration of Rhea and Gaea’s defeat of Saturn.  Held in winter in Angelus (Pluto).
Gaealia -- A festival held in Ceres (Jupiter) to celebrate the beginning of the harvest in Spring.  Sacrifices are offered to Gaea to pray for a fruitful season.
Pontonia -- A festival held in Jafilius (Neptune) in honor of Pontus.  Occurs in summer.
Games, Sports, and other activities:
Stones-and-Stems -- A children’s game.  The children attempt to throw a stone into a “target” made up of twigs or stems.  If a child makes the target, they continue to move farther away from the target until they miss.  The child who gets farthest wins.
Wolf-in-the-Pasture -- A children’s game.  One child is the “wolf” and the others are “cattle.”  The “wolf” chases the “cattle,” and when the “wolf” catches a “cow,” that “cow” also becomes a “wolf.”  The game continues until all “cattle” are “wolves.”  The last “cow” standing becomes the “wolf” in the next round.
Bluff -- A card game similar to poker.  Generally more popular in lower class.
Quadratis -- An aristocratic 4-player card game.
Belli -- An aristocratic 2-player card game.
Acies -- A two-player war/strategy board game meant to simulate a battle.  The board is rectangular and the players sit at either end.  The board is filled with eight large square-shaped tiles, each representing a section of the battlefield.  Each large tile contains 16 squares to signify spaces.  Figurines with differing attributes are used, similar to chess, and each type of figurine has a limit on how many spaces it can move per turn and has specific battle abilities.  The players take turns moving their characters or using an ability.  The goal is to seize control of all tiles on the board, which is done in one of several ways, including a particular combination of figurines on a space, defeating an opponent on the tile before either claim it, or taking control of the tile from an occupying opponent.  Once the tile has been claimed, the player who seized it places a token on the space to signify it is theirs.  The token can be removed and the tile seized by the opponent if the area is left unguarded.  The first player to control all eight tiles wins.  This game can take many hours, even days to complete between a well-matched pair of skilled players.
Bull Leaping -- a traditional sport/performance in Jupiter, based on ancient Greek (mostly Cretan) ritual bull leaping and the more contemporary French course landaise.
Misc. Culture, Customs, and Social Norms
Introduction — The reason I started this au was because of my fascination with arranged marriages, social stratification, cultural norms, etc., so I wanted to add this section on miscellaneous customs not otherwise specified elsewhere in the guide.  This section is going to be much more descriptive rather than simply definitional, so I apologize for my verbosity.
I know some of you feel that the formalities in the au are a bit much, but I’ve actually toned down the formalities because I knew I was probably the only person who would like them.  I’m not trying to write a romance in a historical setting.  I don’t want to write the trope about love being more important than social class.  I’m writing a historical drama with romance in it.  So if things seem formal or proper...yes.  That’s the point.  I’m writing an arranged marriage/royalty au.  It’s all about social class and etiquette.
Just as a note, originally the arranged marriage was much more...arranged, I guess?  The whole thing was far more of a slow burn, too.  In my early plans, Nico and Will had been betrothed for years before they even met in person for the first time.  Their families were discussing the details and they were kept fully informed about the situation, and even wrote to each other some.  Will, of course, was smitten from the moment the negotiations started.  I had this little joke that when they exchanged portraits before the engagement was finalized, Nico’s portrait was the original Nico di Angelo official art, and Will picked it up in complete awe and said, “He’s beautiful!” And then when they actually met in person for the first time, Nico had grown up into Viria official art!Nico and Will basically had the same reaction.
Anyway. I still love this original idea, but I changed it for simplicity’s sake. I’m happy with Privilla, so it all turned out fine, but if I were to do this all over again, I think I would go back to the original plan.
Disclaimer: I’m not an expert on history (I haven’t even taken a history class since high school).  I’m not an expert on sociology and anthropology either, but I have taken classes and I absolutely loved them, and I have done a lot of research for writing this fic.  I drew a lot of inspiration from my cultural anthropology class (I fucking loved that class, have I mentioned that?).  Still, I’m not an expert, nor do I pretend to...ok yes I do pretend to be an expert.
However when it comes to economics and government, I’m making all this shit up.  Mostly.
By mostly I mean like 99.9% of it.
Marriage
Arranged Marriage
Here I’m going to explain the positive things about arranged marriages, but I’d like to say that my no means do I think we should all be having arranged marriages, and I certainly don’t believe we should arrange the marriages of children. I am expressing things from an in-world point of view and this world has many flaws.
The point of an arranged marriage is not love. That does not mean that there will not be love. That does not mean that people are forced into marriages. That does not mean that it is an entirely impersonal transaction. I only said that the point isn’t love.
Marriage is a rite of passage. You become much more respected when you are married. People generally are excited for their marriage to be arranged because it means that they are growing up and serving their family, and they are enthusiastic about the next chapter of their life with their spouse.
Marriages take a long time to arrange. There is a lot of communication between families. Sometimes, the couple in question may not meet for many years, but in this case they usually will exchange letters and get to know each other in preparation for their life together. Again, none of this is done against their will (except that it absolutely is done against their will considering that very often parents begin preparations when their children are still minors). Their feelings are taken into consideration; if they absolutely cannot get along, their families will decide that a marriage would be unsuccessful. Usually, however, they are encouraged to try their best to get along. Again, people are generally excited to meet their suitors and they want to have a successful marriage, so they will be kind to one another and become friendly. Clashes so severe that they lead to breaking off the arrangement after the official betrothal begins are rare.
Sometimes we say things about finding “the one,” like the person you are destined to be with. The concept of fate in this society is a bit different in this respect. In the au, everything that happens was meant to happen because that was how the fates dictated it. If you marry someone, then that is the person you were fated to marry. That person is “the one,” no question about it. Does that mean you’re fated to fall passionately in love? Perhaps, perhaps not. Love isn’t the point of a marriage. All it means is that person is the one you are fated to spend your life with.
Try to consider how people in the au view our “love marriages.” To them, our marriages are weird. They are also quite unwise. Passion, the kind of love that generally leads to marriage today, is a fleeting emotion, one that only lasts the first few years of a relationship. It is not a good foundation. Not only that, but the person you are marrying, most likely, isn’t from a family that’s close to your family, and the two families haven’t communicated to plan and sort everything out. This is a huge decision and you are making it largely on your own. That is seen as very foolish. You are marrying someone who is a complete stranger to your family, which is incredibly risky. So, if you think it is cruel to arrange a marriage, try to consider exactly how terrifying, risky, and impulsive a love marriage would seem to them.
We say, “first comes love, then comes marriage.” They say, “first comes marriage, then comes love.” Just because love didn’t trigger your relationship doesn’t mean there won’t be love.
Think of it this way: most of us, I sincerely hope, love and are loved by our families. You did not choose them. Often, you probably wouldn’t be friends with them or even like them if you aren’t related. But you love them anyway. This is what marriage is like in the au. Your spouse is your family. Under other circumstances, you may not have even picked them out as a friend. Still, you care for them. They’re your family and your partner. You are going to be together for life and you will support each other unconditionally.
Love, although not the foundation of marriage, is expected to happen.  But the kind of love that defines marriage is not passion; it is companionship.  Passion, of course, can and does also happen, but when passion inevitably starts to ebb, it does not seem like the marriage is falling apart because that wasn’t why they married in the first place
I steal a lot of my love terminology and conceptualization from Sternberg’s triarchic theory.
As for courting: yes, suitors will try to woo a potential fiancé.  There are a few reasons for this: 1) you want to get along with your spouse and it is presumed that you will love them eventually; 2) if you are one of several suitors, the wooing is sort of like bribing someone into favoring you, which will make them more likely to choose to marry you; and 3) in courting someone, you demonstrate your ability to provide for your potential spouse through personal attributes such as dependability and patience, as well as wealth in the form of gifts.
All in all, no: love is not the foundation of marriage. However, it’s there.
Unless you’re Zeus and Hera. Failed marriages can happen.
While I’m on the topic: Daphne and Apollo. Their marriage was based on passion and it failed. This is to show the culture’s perspective on love marriages. However, I will say this: we fight with family. We don’t get along with family. Sometimes, we don’t even personally like our family. Yet, we love them. Apollo and Daphne may not get along, they may not be able to stand being in the same room, and they may have other lovers, but they are partners. They are family. In some way, deep down, they do care for each other and they will support each other — and they’ll definitely work together to protect and preserve the well-being of the family they created.
Divorce
There is no divorce--another flaw of the culture.
Annulments are possible in cases when the marriage was unconsummated.
Same sex vs Opposite sex marriage
Same sex marriage
I already went on my long rant about marriage not being founded on love. We have same sex marriages today because marriage is about love now. In Ye Olde Days, it made sense to have a same sex lover, if that was the team you played for, but it wouldn’t have made sense to have a same sex spouse. So, I had to come up with a reason for a same-sex marriage to make sense, if it didn’t have to do with love or procreation.
A same sex marriage is about money and power and prestige. Yes, those things are also involved in an opposite sex marriage, but the degree is different. The traits that make someone a good suitor in a same sex relationship may not be the same as the traits that make a good suitor in an opposite sex marriage. For one thing, the orientation of a same sex marriage is immediate. The benefits of an opposite sex marriage, on the other hand, may take a while to show up. A lot of the functions tie into gender roles as well, which I’ll go over later. I’ve discussed this within the series already, so I don’t think I have to go over it more: just know that in a same sex marriage, the goal is “GIVE ME MY MONEY AND POWER AND PRESTIGE AND GIVE IT TO ME NOW VIA AN ARRANGEMENT THAT DOES NOT RESULT IN OVERPOPULATION.”
Opposite sex marriage
MAKE DEM BABIES
History of marriage
This is a bit complicated, but sort of ties into the same sex and opposite sex marriages.  A long time ago, before monogamy became widespread in the Romanus Terris, it was not uncommon in the upper class to have two spouses, one of each gender, if you were going to inherit a title or land because husbands and wives brought different but equally valuable benefits in a marriage. Eventually, because of foreign influence, monogamy became more popular, but what kept same sex marriages alive was the idea that the sex of your partner was relevant to what they had to offer. I’m not sure if the I’ve explained that well, but it makes sense in my head.
Anyway, this factoid probably won’t come up in the story, so don’t worry about it. It’s just an extra tidbit from world building.
Weddings
Inspired by Ancient Greek weddings.  In Ancient Greece, weddings lasted three days and progressed similarly to what I outline in the series.  The first day is for sacrifices and honoring ancestors and stuff like that.  The second day is for the ritual bathing ceremony and the procession.  That night is the wedding night.  The third day is when gifts are exchanged, some dowry/bride price stuff is taken care of, that kind of thing.  So all that, but in an 18th century Europe inspired setting.
Gender
Nonbinary, Transgender, and Otherwise Not Cis
This culture is extremely cis-centric and dyadic.  It lacks the language and conceptualization to think about and discuss gender the way that we do today, but nonbinary and transgender characters do exist.  More details to come later in the story.
Gender Roles
Gender roles are fairly similar to those in cultures we’re familiar with. More physical duties are masculine, whereas things dealing with childrearing are feminine. Childrearing includes education, which is why education is seen as such a feminine thing.
And yes, this means that Will is actually seen as a rather feminine character.
There’s a theory about gender roles and sexism that I particularly like; basically, this idea states that the problem with feminine gender roles is not that women are forced into roles (i.e., teaching, child-rearing, cooking) that are inherently demeaning. Instead, the problem is that women are treated as inferior, and therefore the things that we associate with women are also deemed to be inferior.
One notable piece of supporting evidence for this is nursing. In Ye Olde Days, nursing was considered a masculine career, but at some point, that switched. At the same time that nursing was becoming viewed as more feminine, it became a considerably less respected profession. This isn’t proof, of course, but it’s definitely worth considering.
There are lots of academic articles about this kind of thing out there, and I definitely buy into it. I find it very empowering and I think women in traditional feminine roles deserve a lot more respect. Reading about theories like this has really helped me learn to appreciate women, I think. I used to believe that a woman was weak or subservient if she subscribed to gender roles too much, but I’ve since figured out that there is absolutely nothing inherently demeaning about child-rearing or other feminine roles, and it was rather sexist of me to fall victim to the groupthink of the patriarchy. So I’ve had a lot of fun experimenting with writing a culture that has clear gender roles, but equal respect between the sexes.
Breaking Gender Roles/GNC
In this universe, because both sexes are very respected, whenever somebody comes across someone breaking a gender role, they might just stop and think, “huh. That’s interesting.” And that’s the end of it. That being said, there are consequences, both good and bad, for breaking these roles.
Let’s take Chiron, for example.  Chiron is a tutor--an extremely good one.  As an educator, he’s in a rather feminine role.  Because Chiron is male, people tend to be especially impressed by his skill, because it’s so unusual to see a male in that position.
However, it was challenging for Chiron to get to where he is now.  Early in his career, people didn’t take him as seriously as they took the women.  He had to work a bit harder than everyone else to succeed.
Female guards
Physical careers (i.e., soldiers, guards, farmers) are definitely more masculine for physiological reasons. That being said, upper class ladies usually have at least one or two female guards, for several reasons.
The first reason is a being-in-the-room-while-you-change/we-all-have-the-same-parts-here kind of thing.  It’s not a sexuality thing (pretty much all the characters are bi anyway).  If you’re a female guard and you happen to see a boob or two, then it’s not a big deal. Nothing you haven’t seen before. Although it wouldn’t be polite to stare.
Is this transphobic?  Yes.  One of this world’s flaws is the dyadic and cis-centric nature of the culture.
But by no means is this a set-in-stone rule.
Could a cis male guard be in the room while a cis noble lady is changing?  Sure.  Besides, she’ll probably be behind a screen regardless of what her security has in their pants (or skirts).
A female guard could also be in the room while the male noble she’s protecting is changing.
Because yes, a male can also have a female guard.  There are no rules against that.
And if you’ll recall, Reyna has been in the room while Nico was changing before.
Another reason for female guards is to be a body double.  A female guard may pretend to be a noble lady to protect her if they think she’s in danger of being attacked.
A third reason for a female guard is that girls can do whateverthefuck they want.
But what I really mean to say is I don’t want people to walk away with the idea that this world is feminist because women can be guards.  This world is feminist because it respects women.  Being in a “man’s role” isn’t what makes a woman powerful.
Gender and Leadership
Men and women are seen as having different but equally important specialties when it comes to leadership. Women bring wisdom and empathy, whereas men are, for lack of a better term, “enforcers” (that isn’t quite right, but I can’t think of a more accurate description at the moment). Both of these qualities are necessary for good leadership. For that reason, there is pretty much always a somewhat equal gender balance in leadership roles. Often, this means a husband and wife.
Let’s take the example of Pluto. Hades is the King and Persephone is the Queen. (Well, technically speaking, Persephone is not the Queen, she’s the Queen Consort, but you get the idea). The Pluton inner court is made up of a fairly equal number of men and women. Nico, unlike Hades, will not take a wife. This is why he has Reyna. Because Reyna is eternally single and not going to mingle, she will reliably remain by Nico’s side when he becomes King and through the duration of his reign. Politically speaking, her position in the Pluton court will be comparable to a Queen Consort. The bond between Nico and Reyna is like a marriage in that sense; it’s a very formal partnership and they will share Nico’s authority (albeit not completely equally). This sort of relationship is a remnant of the polygamy in the history of the Romanus Terris.
So where does this leave Will? The purpose of Will’s marriage to Nico is money and trade relations.  Also to get a sunshiney poster boy for the Royal Family because Pluto, in general, doesn’t like Nico.
However, neither Will nor Reyna will have the same amount of power that Persephone has because Persephone is the King’s wife and adviser.  More about the details of Nico’s marriage will be revealed later in the series.
Food and Meals
I’ve probably been inconsistent about this in the actual series, but these are the official facts.
Meal times
Breakfast: Served in the morning; generally a small meal, traditionally cheese and cold cuts.
Lunch (or Luncheon): Midday meal of the upper class.  The working class has an earlier dinner.  The size of luncheon varies by culture.  Juvians have the largest lunch.
Dinner: In the upper class, takes place later in the afternoon, maybe around 4 pm or later.  In the working class, it takes place earlier, perhaps at 1 or 2 pm.  Largest meal of the day.
Supper: For the upper class, takes place in the evening.  For the working class, takes place in late afternoon.  Is a smaller meal, often just snacks.
Cuisine
I try to give Aegyptia and Skatinavia somewhat culturally and historically accurate foods.
Neptune: Much of Neptune’s culture, including cuisine, is inspired by New Orleans and the Caribbean. Loud flavors. Spicy. A lot of seafood.
Jupiter:  Southern Jupiter’s cuisine is influenced by food in Southern USA. Cornbread. Chicken pot pie. Butter.
Pluto: Tends to be meat-heavy. Kind of bland and dry.

Pipeyna colours soulmate au
In which you can’t see colour till you meet your soulmate
Reyna thinks soulmates are a hoax sometimes. She thinks the world has conspired to pretend that you can see colour once you meet the person you connect with on another level. Her father never saw colour. Circe - her foster mother said she’s never seen colour even after all the boyfriends she’s had. It baffles Reyna how some people would try to make it work when their world didn’t light up in colour when they met, but Hylla told her you had to fall in love with them. How did Hylla know anyway? She was having her on. Lots of people told her you had to be over 16 to really know what love was so it never happened before then.
Piper was obsessed with knowing everything about soulmates and how you found them, what happened when you did. She knew that her mother and father weren’t soulmates, that her mother dropped her father not long after she was born to go in search of someone who would light her world up, but her father was content to make a life with someone who wasn’t 100% compatible. With 7 billion people in the world to search through, he wasn’t bothered. Piper talked to a lot of people about soulmates and found out that you had to fall in love with them to see the world in full colour but from meeting them, they were in full vibrant colour.
When Reyna met Jason in primary school she thought she was in love, but her world didn’t light up in colour so Hylla must have been lying. She realised later that she was just lonely, she wanted to believe she was in love and so she tricked herself into thinking it. Sometimes she hoped that all it would take was for Jason to fall in love with her. She fought with these feelings till she was 16 years old and Jason moved away. She missed him, but not like you’d miss someone you loved so deeply. She realised she was just so attached because he was her only friend, he was the only person ever kind to her.
Piper was 15 when her friend Annabeth told her how her world lit up in colour when her best friend Percy turned 16. She had turned 16 a month before and their worlds lit up at the exact same moment. She told her that Percy had the most beautiful green eyes, the same colour as a stormy sea and that flowers came in all sorts of amazing colours, not just shades of grey. Piper couldn’t wait to meet her soulmate, maybe she already had and just didn’t know it yet. Percy and Annabeth seemed so happy together, she couldn’t wait to have a life like that with someone.
When Percy arrived at her school for the last year, Reyna thought maybe he’ll do. He actually talked to her, made an effort to be friends with her. Other kids wouldn’t speak to her often, she was shy so they gave up soon after and she’d been brought up in a kids home, a lot of the other kids didn’t like that - they thought she’d try and steal their stuff or something, kids brought up there had a reputation for that. But Percy had already met his soulmate, Annabeth - a beautiful girl that seemed so calm compared to Percy. Reyna realised with a start that she’d rather have Annabeth as her soulmate than Percy. Then she began to worry - what if her soulmate couldn’t be a girl?
Annabeth was there for her when Piper came out to her and told her that she hoped her soulmate was a girl. She had always known she liked girls and maybe thats one reason she was so obsessed with the lore behind soulmates. When they taught you about soulmates at school they never mentioned about same gender soulmates. But Annabeth told her about her friends Thalia and Bianca, they were three years older than Annabeth and Bianca was Nico’s older sister - he had never mentioned that she’d found her soulmate. That made Piper feel much better.
Annabeth and Percy were young when they got engaged, only 18. They had a party, inviting all their friends. Piper was running late, as she always was and knocked on their door out of breath after running up to the apartment they shared. A tall regal looking girl answered the door after a moment. Her brown hair was in a long thick braid down her back and she was wearing a short purple dress and white lacey heels. Piper blinked. She could see her in colour. Her dark brown eyes closed for a moment and then opened again. She looked bewildered. ‘You’re top. It’s pink. You’re jeans are blue.’ she said. She laughed. ‘I’ve never seen colours before.’ she looked relieved, happy.
Piper beamed at her. ‘Neither have I.’ She held her hand out for the girl to shake. ‘I’m Piper.’ She said. ‘And I’m so glad to meet you.’
The girl was called Reyna and Piper and her talked all night. She found out that before tonight, Reyna had disregarded soulmates, she didn’t believe in them. Piper was shocked at this but grins so so much at the thought that now, she does believe and it is her thats made her believe.
They really hit it off at the party and organise to go on a date three days later, to coffee at a local coffee shop. They sit there for hours and hours just talking and laughing and getting to know each other and the world begins to colour all around them as they fall in love.
They go on a date at least once a week and fall in love. Reyna loves how easygoing Piper is and how supportive she is. She always listens really carefully to her problems and always has the best advice. Piper loves how confident Reyna always is. She seems so shy at first but when its something that really matters she slays.
A year later and their whole world is in vibrant colour, at the same pace as each other and they marvel at it, always discussing the colours they can now see around them and gushing at it. Reyna loves looking into Pipers kaleidoscope eyes knowing that she was wrong to not believe in soulmates. How could she ever think that she’d never see all this!! Piper loves Reyna’s chocolate brown eyes, she melts in them, and she’s glad that they’re the first thing she saw in colour. She wouldn’t have it any other way.
Piper is really cheesy and always introduces Reyna as ‘my soulmate’ whenever they meet up with her old friends or acquaintances. Reyna rolls her eyes but she loves hearing her say that.
