Yay!! In that case… could I get some headcanons for going to the county fair with the gang as a friend??
-🛼
also i hope youve been doing well hon 💖
A/N: For you Roller! I'm excited to maybe hit my county fair this summer so I hope you enjoy reading this! County fairs are close to my heart because I have family in 4-H so we get to help show animals some times <3 I based this off my county fair but I tried to be as vague as possible so you can apply it to any of your fair experiences!
Tumblr media
The chaos y’all get into, I swear
For the sake of this set of headcanons, you’re about Soda’s age, maybe a little bit younger, so you’re pretty centered in the middle of the gang’s ages
You’re young enough to fit in with Johnny and Pony but old enough that Two-Bit and Darry can trust you to take care of yourself
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s move onto the fair shall we?
We’re starting with the animals of the fairgrounds!
Cows, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits, the occasional llama if you’re lucky enough to have one
Dally doesn’t like being in the animal barns; he stepped in cow poop once and has vowed to never walk through another
So he stands on the outside and supervises whoever walks through
Usually, it’s you, Ponyboy and Johnny!
Steve and Soda love the thrill of the rides, Two-Bit does too if he’s not trying to pick up a girl at the fair
Darry tends to go along with them to make sure no one dies
Pony likes the cows and Johnny likes to watch sheep being shown in the event rings
(Side note as someone who’s worked with sheep at a fair before, they may be pretty but I assure you most sheep are very dumb and are very capable of injuring you)
After messing around the animal barns, Dally eventually gets tired and ushers you all back to Darry and the others
Ride time!
Two-Bit loves to go on whatever kind of roller coasters they have at the fair and would live for dragging you along with them
It doesn’t matter if you’re afraid of heights or just don’t like roller coasters, you’re going on at least one of them with Two
You know those spinning teacup ride things? Where you sit down and you can spin the thingy you’re sitting in as fast as you want?
You end up riding in that with Soda and Steve
They’re both spinning it as fast as you can, if you’re into it, they’ve got you spinning too!
The world’s blurring past, you can barely see the others because of how fast you’re going
Maybe you end up getting banned from the ride but it was a lot of fun!!
Johnny’s not a ride guy? Especially if you guys get food before that?
Pony like the house of mirrors, loves going through it with the guys because they’re all laughing so hard by the time they get out
Dally likes the carousel but doesn’t want to admit it although if you try hard enough, you can get him to go on it with you
Darry’s a ferris wheel kind of guy? I feel like he would enjoy the peaceful ferris wheel
Since I mentioned it a little bit, let’s get into fair food!
Darry buys a few things of cotton candy for you guys and everyone just sort of splits them between each other
You’re pulling pieces from one before moving to another, pestering whoever is holding it so you can have a piece of that one too
Y’all get drinks and stuff too, simple things like that
You guys ended up getting funnel cake one time and the one time you got it, Sodapop dropped the entire thing on the ground
Darry refuses to buy anymore funnel cake for the group
So at my fair, usually they have some sort of event at the end of the night that you can go to
We’ve had rodeos and like crash-up derbies before, they’re always loads of fun to sit and watch
If they have something like that here?
There’s a good chance at least one of the boys is in the rodeo but none of them are in the crash-up
It’s just that none of them have a car they can just destroy for one night of racing
It’s a lot of fun to see someone you know in the rodeo, especially if you get to go down panel-side and watch them
But even if no one’s in the rodeo, it’s a lot of fun to sit with the gang and watch whatever’s happening in the arena
All in all, going to the fair with the boys is a lot of fun!
You’re going to get into a lot of things and make a lot of memories <3

Note
What would the lis favourite activity or ride be at the amusement park?
Arjun: Tilt-A-Whirl. He gets nauseous on bigger rides and gets headaches from wooden rollercoasters, which is a bummer because he wants to like carnival rides and will go on them if MC or Elijah wants to for the sake of having fun with them. But Tilt-A-Whirl is just easy enough where he has fun on the ride whilst not getting overwhelmed. Plus he loves throwing himself against his partner and trying (and failing) to control the cart.
Bobby: Swing ride. Don’t get me wrong, he loves playing games with his partner and rides they can do together, but I think this is the one ride he always makes time to go on. He likes the simplicity of it, the feeling of flying, softly kicking his feet. If MC/Noah is in the seat in front of him he’ll try to be silly by kicking the back of their seat, but honestly he has more fun if they’re behind him so he doesn’t get distracted from actually enjoying the ride.
Carl: Food. He’s here for the food trucks. He especially likes to seek out weird things that aren’t served in restaurants, not just the ‘deep fried X on a stick’ but also the more niche stands with food from another culture (I don’t know if this is universal but at our state fairs/carnivals people who like to cook will rent stands and you can just. Have a plate of some Persian grandmother’s food, or have the most mindblowingly amazing curry you've ever tasted from a stall with zero marketing that serves it in a styrofoam bowl)
Elijah: The High Striker/Strength Tester game. He just wants to show off to his partner and win them a cheesy cheap stuffed toy.
Felix: Laser tag. He gets super excited to play and SUPER competitive. Actually cares about the leaderboard, and it’s one of the few times you see him focus and strategize.
Gary: Drinking. I think carnivals are probably a little overwhelming for him. He likes playing some of the games, but if it’s a big sprawling one with lots of activities he doesn’t want to pick activities or plan anything. I think his favorite part is just getting a cold beer and wandering around, looking at all the things.
Hannah: For some reason I just get the vibe that she’s super interested in those games where you win a goldfish. I think she always gets excited when she sees it and commits herself to winning one. Once she does, she decides this is her new best friend and she’s going to take such good care of it, but they never survive more than a couple of weeks.
Henrik: Teacups. He’s going to convince you to ride, then use all his arm strength to spin you both as fast as humanly possible. When you get off he says ‘whoa I’m dizzy’ every time, but then later will ask you to go on again.
Rahim: Ferris wheel. He likes that it’s slower, and also a little more private (because it’s just him and his partner in the compartment/bench, so it's a nice break from the crowds). He also really enjoys seeing the whole carnival from a height and looking out at the scenery. Plus he can’t resist a romantic kiss at the top.
Jakub: I don’t know if this is universal, but in the midwest we have demo derbies. It’s when people take old crappy cars, fix them up, paint them flashy colors/designs, then literally run them into other cars in a stadium until they won’t drive anymore. The car that keeps moving last wins. It’s loud, competitive, suspenseful, and campy (kind of like wrestling, the drivers/car teams are assigned a performative personality). Plus sometimes the cars explode/catch on fire, and that’s fun to watch.
Kassam: Roller coasters. I feel like Kassam’s the type to go to theme parks at least four or five times a year, and he really likes the fast, new ones. I think his favorite type is the Impulse Roller Coaster which goes insanely fast and insanely high in a short period of time, but he also likes the tower of terror style drop coasters. Anything where you get that sinking stomach feeling. If you go to a theme park/carnival, he’ll plot out all the roller coasters and make a plan to go on all of them throughout the day.
Lottie: Fortune teller, obvious reasons. She’ll walk away either way too somber/serious or scoffing like ‘that lady/dude was absolutely full of it’.
Lucas: Bumper cars. It’s one of the few times Lucas really lets loose and allows himself to be unpolished. But the genuine joy of him trying to chase MC’s cart down, or raucously laughing when he gets hit, or the cheeky grin when he narrowly evades someone, or stumbling out of his cart with the rare messy hair and dazed smile… It’s so cute. And he has a lot of fun. He won’t ask to go on the bumper cars initially, but will always ask to go again once you’ve done it.
Marisol: People watching. I think her favorite part of the outing is when you get a snack/beverage, find a bench in the shade, and just take it all in. She giggles and points out people doing silly things, or just makes up little narratives about the relationships of couples/families she sees. She likes getting a vibe for the general type of people who attend the event they’re specifically at, and making generalizations about why that is/how the carnival could attract other people.
Noah: I think he really like the slow boring rides that most people dislike. Like the ones that run around a little track and have a story- think Disney’s Carosel of Progress or It’s a Small World. He just finds them charming and once he finds one he likes will want to make it a routine to visit. Also wait now I’m fantasizing about going to Epcot with Noah, I think that’d be so fucking fun. Like hanging out in all the countries, getting different drinks and food, acknowledging how cheesy it is but genuinely enjoying it all the same.

Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Harley Quinn: [voice over] Oh, I fell hard. Like out of a plane without a parachute, right in your dumb fucking face kind of hard. I lost all sense of who I was. I only had eyes for Pudding. We all know the saying, "Behind every successful man there's a badass broad." Well, that was me. I was the brains behind some of Mr. J's greatest stunts. Not that he let anyone know it.

Fuckruary 2021 Prompts
Each day in February has three types of prompts: a trope / kink / sex act prompt, a location prompt, and a quote/dialogue prompt.

Examples in parentheses are suggestions, not requirements or all possible interpretations of a prompt.

Day 37, Monday, October 4. 121 miles. Johnson Shut-ins SP to Montauk SP near Salem. Took the long way thru Eminence.
Followed U.S. Bicycle Route 76 most of yesterday and all of today.
Quiet night till bedtime at Johnson's Shut-in SP. Happy, strange noises coming from the young couple's tent next door. Cave man like talk. Started up again in the morning. I hope they're ok. :)
I know, I say this a lot, but today was truly a ten riding day. All colored roads, several miles on yellow, which are never to be missed. Ups and downs, some so big they're like a roller coaster - would be so easy to catch air. Sweepers, trees, rivers, ponds - just beauty at its finest.
There are a lot of 'scary' looking "homes" out here though. Hoarding poverty. Now I know where cars, RVs, boats, kitchen appliances and more go to die. Definitely don't want nothing to do with river rafting around here :). Strange this comes and goes. Will be a 5 mile stretch of hoarding poverty, then 5 mile stretch of beautiful homes - back and forth all day.
Took a couple side turns on dirt/gravel 'roads' to see some sights. Unfortunately the sights were not really sights. Shades of Fort Ransom's 'waterfall'. Checked out the just completed Echo Bluffs State Park. Bit over the top with a Lodge & overnight rooms, a fancy restaurant, 'cabins' many as big or bigger than my house. Missouri spent some big money here.
Montauk SP is a great little campground, right on the Current River. My campsite backed up to the river. LOTS of fly fishermen, or is that fisherpeople, up and down the river. They had their annual trout fishing derby the past weekend. I guess this place was crazy packed.
Coyote Choir back in action last night. Missed them!

IN PRAISE OF YOLO
by Jasper L
Here’s the thing about jeans: they’re jeans. You may have been told this before. And jeans, being jeans, look best after you beat the crap out of them. Yes, I know you want to wear “dressy jeans” with an odd jacket. Let go of this mid-aughts conception (and abandon the club-ready striped shirt, too). Even worn with an odd jacket, blue jeans aren’t dressy. That’s okay, though - if your jacket is of casual length and construction, and the jeans have lost the sheen of new denim. Accept that they won’t stay that crisp, beautiful indigo forever; learn to wabi the sabi and your mind (and your jeans) will thank you.
Getting to that state (mental and physical) takes dedication.
Walking the dogs? Denim time. Gardening? Denim time. Changing your oil? Yup (for those who live on the US East Coast: there are these things called cars. They have engines, the operation of which is aided by a lubricating oil, which must be changed every so often). Cook in them, dance in them, hike in them, forget your worries about stains and wrinkles and creases. Once you’ve worn your jeans into a pale, chalky blue, that oil stain is going to be just another mark of character (again, for the US East Coasters: you could substitute an olive or truffle oil stain).
Worries are for trousers, which jeans are not (denim trousers excluded - always exclude denim trousers). Don’t agonize over length. Let your jeans stack, or, if this bothers you, cuff them until they hang straight. If you hem them at all, wait until the denim settles; that way, those starchy folds have time to calm and crease. If you wear your jeans with a collared shirt, you’re not obligated to tuck it in. And please, never iron your jeans.
A lot of people still think jeans can only be worn with sneakers - sort of like how once upon a time people thought you couldn’t serve burgers in a fancy restaurant. Credit Hedi Slimane with encouraging people to wear derbies with their skinny jeans. But I’d suggest boots. If you’re wearing slubby Big Johns, try balancing out your cuff with a pair of heavy boots. If you’re wearing a slimmer cut, experiment with letting them stack atop a sleek pair of Buttero side-zips.
Despite everything that I’ve written above, there really are no rules for jeans. You just wear them.
Quality content, like quality clothing, ages well. This article first appeared on the No Man blog in 2015.

Round and Round (closed for Pushspacetocontinue)
Joey honestly couldn’t remember the last time he had been to a county fair. He had memories of going as a child but, after he was a certain age his parents just stopped taking he and his brother.  At least now he could maybe have a chance to make new ones here, and with a good friend no less.
“I’m really glad you decided to come out with me today,”he said, handing Russell a wristband that will let them get on as many rides as they want. “I think this’ll be really fun.”
He could hear people screaming in both joy and terror inside the park, and the sound of people winning large prizes drifted over the top. Various fried foods could be smelled cooking within the multicolored tents, each boasting they had the best in the area for  what they were. Corn dogs, funnel cakes, curly fries- all ready to be handed to the next bout of customers.
A number of rides were scattered through the fair grounds: swings, a drop, the zipper, gravetron, slides, bumper cars, even a small roller coaster as well as various other spinning rides. A Ferris wheel spun slowly in the distance.
“Are there any rides you’re looking forward to? I think there’s also a demolition derby later in the day if you’re at all interested in that.”

Cedar Point 2018
May 25 & 26, 2018 Photo Album Video Album
Tumblr media
If you can’t find a way to go to Cedar Point during dead week, Memorial Day Weekend has proven to be a great time to head to Cedar Point and find moderate attendance and lighter lines.  In the past four years I’ve spent 3 Memorial Day weekends at the park, and have had a great time on each visit.  Even with the long drive from North Carolina to Sandusky, the trip is worth it to visit America’s Roller Coast, and having followed the transformation of Mean Streak into Steel Vengeance over the last 2 years, I was determined to get to the park this year to ride.  My friends Isaac and Blake joined in, and on Friday morning we headed north.
Isaac found a nice AirBnB about 30 minutes south of the park and, after stopping off there to drop off our stuff and freshen up, we made our way onto the peninsula.  We parked in the Cedar Point Shores parking lot since the Magnum lot was closed, and headed in to meet up with Bryan Bird.  After introductions and salutations, we walked towards Dragster, which was testing after being closed.  The line opened as we walked by, so we quickly got into the queue as the wait wouldn’t be this short all weekend most likely.
Dragster is always a great experience, even if it isn’t a great coaster.  We waited about 35 minutes or so to ride near the back of the train.  Dragster always makes me anxious because of that launch.  This was Blake’s first time at the park and first time on anything like this.  As always, the launch was super fast and intense and I really still like Dragster as a ride.  This was our only ride all weekend because it was being cranky both days.
Tumblr media
We walked around the front of the park and headed over towards Millennium Force.  I noticed when driving by that the line started at the end of the ramp and was happy to see that was still the case.  It only took about 30 minutes to get on the ride.  I know the coaster gets a lot of ‘hate’, but I actually really like it.  The first drop is already amazing and the setting can’t be beat.  There is airtime on the two hills hopping back over from the island, and even the small hop by the station gives you a rise out of your seat.  Blake once again loved it.
After that we headed across the midway to Rougarou, which was nearly a walk on, and we got on in the back.  The ride packs a punch and is so much better than Mantis ever was.  We walked around for a bit and thru Frontier Town.  Steel Vengeance had a very long line, so we walked around the park and finally hit up the burger joint back near Steel Vengeance as Bryan said the food was good.  And the food was decent.  The customer service, however, was severely lacking.  It took way too long and they kept messing up orders, but eventually we did get our burgers.  After that we headed to the entrance to Steel Vengeance to get in line to end our nite.  The wait was about an hour and twenty minutes with them running one train.
Steel Vengeance-I can’t even give a proper rundown of the ride.  Its just as good as everyone said, no overhyping here.  The first drop was amazing.  We rode in the back seat.  The 90 degree drop was amazing.  After that you have the two outward banked ejector airtime hills. Then I can’t honestly tell you much about what happened because it was a big convoluted mess.  And I mean that in the most awesome way possible.  This coaster has the intensity of Voyage (the only ride I can say is in it’s category), but without the rattle (however slight) that any wooden coaster can have.  I was weak in the knees and dizzy afterwards for a good thirty minutes.  Instant number one.  It delivers every thing.  All of the things.  It has them.  Airtime, floater and ejector.  Sideways airtime.  Inversions.  Insanity.
Tumblr media
So that was the end of the first evening.  I was in total ecstasy.  And it shown thru for the entire ride back to the AirBnB thirty minutes away.  Once we got there we got our stuff together and I took a shower and quickly fell asleep.
The next morning we got up and got ready to head out.  There was a McDonalds down the street that was good for breakfast.  We pulled into the parking lot right around 9am and headed in for Platinum Pass early entry.  We had planned to go straight back and get on Steele Vengeance, but once we got back there the line was already full.  We decided to forgo that till the end of the day once again and get some other early rides in.  And the closest early ride was Maverick.  I still love Maverick in every way.  I’m glad they’re restoring effects.  Thusfar some of the lights in the tunnel are working.  I can’t wait till the LED walls and more of the effects are added back in in the tunnel.  It really helps an already amazing ride.
It was getting close to park opening so we headed up to Valravn thru Frontier Town, stopping by the closed petting zoo for a brief visit with some donkeys.  On our last trip, Isaac and I got a back row nite ride because it was the debut year and the line was really long, and the ride barely ran the next day.  This was my first daytime ride, and we rode in the front row this time.
Valravn-That first drop on any dive coaster is great.  The view from Valravn though, is really beautiful.  While not a huge fan of dive coasters I do think this is the best layout, even if Sheikra has better theming.  The inversions are smooth and that zero g roll has great airtime, which was hitting much harder on this visit.  I really like the coaster more on a second go round.
Tumblr media
As we were in the area we hit up Blue Streak, which was (and has been for some time now) running phenomenally along the track.  Great airtime and such a classic coaster.  Then we walked over towards the front of the park.  I mentioned at some point that I wanted to ride Ocean Motion as I never had, and it has such a cute, quaint setting.
Though I'm still trying to get back down to my pre-surgery weight of 2015 (I’ve lost 20lbs since December!), I’m not skinny enough to ride Wicked Twister.  And that’s fine for now because I know I’ll be back down.  But I didn’t want Isaac nor Blake to miss out, so after getting some Starbucks I told them to get in line while I sat and watched and had some coffee.
Since we were already in the area and close to Gatekeeper, that was what we got in line for next, which was basically a walk-on.  Maybe a one train wait.  I know this coaster gets a lot of flack for being big and snoopy and boring, but I like big and snoopy and don’t think it’s boring.  Plus it’s very stunning to look at.  After Gatekeeper I took Blake to see the top floor of the Coliseum, knowing that he’d love the big band era art deco.
Tumblr media
We decided to have lunch, and with Isaac having some food allergies, and Blake being in the mood for it, we decided to hit Panda Express.  Oh, and since I have the dining pass, I was fine with it too.  We walked over to Melt first as I wanted to try it out at some point and decided to have dinner there.  Then we walked to the main midway and followed a marching band.  As we walked across the park we were able to see some of the rehearsal for the new show on the former Luminosity stage.  Meh.  I liked Luminosity. Once we were done eating we got in line for Iron Dragon.  This was actually one of the longer waits of the day, clocking in at around 20 minutes.  But thats okay.  I can give or take Iron Dragon, but didn’t want Blake to miss out.
I wanted to see what the wait for Steel Vengeance would be like so our next stop was back in that corner of the park, but sadly the line was well over 2 hours.  We walked back to the main midway and hit up Derby Racer.  I love this thing.  I really need to ride the other 2 at some point.  At that point we were on our way out the front gate to move the car and hit up the water park for a bit.  The lines were even lighter at Cedar Point Shores.  I never visited Soak City.  The current waterpark looks outstanding.  Much better than what it used to be.  We weren’t planning on staying very long.  After changing into our swim trunks we headed over to some random slide complex and did a pink slide.
Isaac and I had wanted to do the drop slides, as we love them at Carowinds, but we passed for the moment and went to the big family raft slide.  As we neared the top, we could see a storm coming our way.  The large raft slide was really a lot of fun, and I got some good airtime up the side of the trough.  At the end it was starting to sprinkle, so we went for a dip in the older lazy river.  I wish Carowinds’ Lazy River was this long (Or that they had 2 like CPS).  As the rain got heavier we decided to call it a day at the water park after about an hour and a half just as the bottom dropped out of the clouds.
Tumblr media
We went into the bathhouse and changed while basically being stranded in their for around 30 minutes.  Then once the rain subsided enough we headed to the car then drove over to Hotel Breakers for a drink at their bar.  I also had a cinnamon bun from Starbucks whilst drinking my Long Island Iced Tea.
The sun came out while we were hanging at Breakers so we headed down the boardwalk and entered the park by Windseeker, which I contest is still the best one of the group thus far.  Then I wanted to get some pictures from the Ferris Wheel, so that was obviously next.  We had looked at the line for Raptor before going to Shores, but it was still long.  At this point, however, the line was maybe 20 minutes so we hit that up next.  Blake and Isaac were then going to get their credits on Corkscrew as I took some photos, but the line was really long so we headed to Melt for dinner.  This was my first (and hopefully not last) Melt experience.  Our server was great and so was the food.  I like all of the nostalgia Cedar Point pictures in the restaurant.
A ride on the CP & LE railroad was our next stop.  Had it not been getting late we’d have rode the entire circuit but Blake still needed some rides and we hadn’t ridden two of the best rides in the park, so we took another look at Steel Vengeance’s line, then headed over to Gemini.  At this point it was only running the red side, but the ride was still super fun as always.
Tumblr media
By this point it was a little past twilight and we headed to Magnum.  I couldn’t take my small nap sack on so I waited for Blake and Isaac to ride, then Isaac took all of our stuff to the car while Blake and I rode in the front of the car at nite.  Magnum is as glorious as ever, even if I didn’t get trim free rides this time.  But that’s…okay.
Blake still needed the mine train, but I needed a bathroom, so I told him to go ride that since I knew it would be a walk on while I went to the restroom, then we headed to Steel Vengeance to meet up.  The fireworks were going off as Blake and Isaac arrived and we got in line just before the point we had the nite before.  Again it was somewhere between 70 and 90 minutes to ride, but I lucked out and got a ride in row 8 as a single rider.  And it was still so amazing.  As we walked to the Magnum entrance to the park, I saw my first Dragster rollback.
My only main issues with the visit was that obviously they’re only running one train on Steel Vengeance, otherwise I’d have ridden a few more times as lines were light all weekend.  Cedar Point nearly every year is starting to spoil me as I’ve been 3 of the past four Memorial Days.  I think I’ll likely skip next year, but I will definitely be back for more of America’s Roller Coast soon.
We headed back to the AirBnB and we were all wiped out, so I fell asleep pretty soon after closing my eyes, ready for the drive the next morning to Kings Island.

💔 “Mixing business with pleasure since 1965” 🎸 Baron Wolman, 25 June 1937 - 2 November 2020 - Photographer & Friend ❤️ It is with a sad heart that we share the news of the passing of Baron Wolman on November 2, 2020. Baron died peacefully at the age of 83, after a battle with ALS. Baron was propelled into his photography career in 1967, when he was invited to become Rolling Stone magazine’s first chief photographer. Not only was Wolman in the right place at the right time, he was recognized as a photographer whose work was inseparable from the roller-coaster social phenomena of the era. His pictures were about the times and his artistry and unique vision landed him a wide variety of assignments from advertising and record companies, universities, government agencies, and a multitude of publications from Esquire, to Sunset, to Newsweek, to Playboy, to Vogue, to Smithsonian, to airline magazines - to name but a few. Baron’s subjects represented the cultural icons of the time: the building of the Berlin Wall, rock & roll, the NFL, the Goodyear Blimp, Roller Derby, American cars, Israel in flux, the changing nature of fashion, and aerial landscapes photographed while piloting his own plane. Baron’s pictures gave us a rare, comprehensive, and accurate reflection of that time executed by a gifted artist whose visual intelligence is unsurpassed. We share just a glimpse of Baron’s incredible collection of work, along with a few photographs of his time during his exhibition in Sydney at Blender Gallery in 2011. ⚡️ Baron, it has been an absolute pleasure to be able to work, live and be involved in your life. 5: Center Circuit
North of the Entrance Plaza is what could be considered the “main” area of Sanguine Park. It’s certainly the most central of all the areas, and most of them branch off from it in some way or another. That’s not to say the Circuit lacks its own charm though, no, as it’s a wide, open area with many attractions of its own, such as several constantly running roller coasters of varying types and sizes that act as decent murder machines if you happen to shove something or someone in front of them. Extra points for style and creativity!
Also present is a go-kart track in the northeastern portion of the area that has most of its fences torn down, allowing any and all to simply steal the karts and drive them throughout the park, for better or worse. Joyriders should be aware that the karts are very open and somewhat fragile, so attempting to use them as battering rams against the zombie hoards is bound to result in your violent death as you are ripped from the seat and torn to pieces under the teeth of the hungry dead.
You may also find a bumper car ride in this portion of the park, though those cars have even less utility in attempting to run down or escape the undead, and you’re more likely to find unfortunate cadavers still strapped inside the cars, victims of the harnesses meant to keep them safe.
Meanwhile, more towards the western section of the Circuit, you can find a rather large stadium that proclaims itself to be the site of an exciting demolition derby, though you’ll need to wait for the proper participants to arrive for that part. Outside, however, you can find a rather nice amount of sports cars and motorcycles being put on display for the enjoyment of vehicle aficionados and the attempted escape of anyone lucky enough to manage to find the keys to them. Attempting to hotwire the cars is also possible, but will likely be regarded as cheating and will almost certainly result in your violent execution by the refs.
Also the Hunt has referees. You’ll meet them later.
You might also notice by this point that the area generally has something of a racing theme, and some of the undead present are even dressed like racers and pit crews, though without any racing helmets. They can’t exactly get their teeth around your throat if there’s plastic in the way, but you might get lucky and find the helmets in question elsewhere to use as protection.
There’s one more special thing to note about these zombies though; if you happen to see any of them with black gums, or leaking black liquid that smells a great deal like oil instead of blood, do not light them on fire. Or do, if you’re into that sort of thing.
Burners are what the announcer calls these particular zombie variants, and through a quirk of a chemical cocktail that certain individuals were supposed to be disallowed from producing, they light up quite nicely to any type of ignition. And then they keep burning.
A lit burner will let out a horrendous scream of pure agony the instant the flames erupt all across their skin, burning a brilliant orange as their flesh blackens, bubbles, and cooks. Their eyes will sear away and the empty sockets will glow with the flames that cook the still moving body. Indeed, the body will actually move far faster than the average zombie; a lit burner moves at an outright sprint, screaming all the while as it relentlessly pursues whatever cruel soul condemned it to this horrific fate.
If it catches you, it will do what comes naturally to a zombie and attempt to pin you down. Its hands will clutch at your head, digging into your skin like a hot knife in butter and press as it keeps on screaming, as though demanding you feel the same pain it does. Then it will clamp that open maw down on your head and rip into your skull. It won’t leave you after that point; unlike other zombies, it will simply keep eating its sole victim, single-minded and vengeful, even as its body begins to fall apart under the flames that eat all the way down to its bone marrow.
You can understand why they weren’t deliberately mass-produced.

Chapter 52. Finnish Lapland
Tumblr media
I’m writing this introduction from our flight from London Gatwick. It is 6:14 AM. Cold and rainy. We’ve been up since 4, and even my few hours of sleep were interrupted by relentless coughing. I should feel tired and angry.
But instead I’m bursting with anticipation - like my body can’t handle the excitement (maybe that’s the reason for my cough?).
This is Chelsay and I’s first weekend trip, and as the plane makes its way to the runway, I’m remembering the #1 reason we moved back: accessible travel, starting with this weekend’s trip to the Finnish Lapland.
Our second round of European adventures began with this road trip to Nellim, Finland, an extremely remote town of 150 people tucked 250 miles into the Arctic Circle, just five miles from the Russian border.
However, before writing about our three days in Finland, I want to quickly cover our first three weeks in London.
I could talk about our return to Richmond Park, about our walks through Soho and the reminders of how “cool” London is, or about how we found our flat in Hampstead within 24 hours of arriving... All of that was great, but I really only want to write about one thing: Indy.
Yes, 12 year old Chelsay’s dream finally came true. As a kid, she’d tell her mom she was going to live in London (...she watched a lot of Mary Poppins). She would have a great job and a nice husband. But most importantly: she would have a border collie named Indiana Jones. This dream came true when Chels and I traveled up to Derby, England to visit a puppy litter. All of the puppies had chubby butts, but our little Indy was easy to spot: tail wagging, stomping over his puppy siblings, and already showing affection to his new parents. It was love at first site.
Tumblr media
We won’t get to take little Indy home for a few more weeks, but that hasn’t slowed Chelsay’s “puppy mom” obsession. We bought his crate and fence on the ride home from Derby. We’ve been watching hours of dog training videos on YouTube. I’m receiving dozens of texts each day with the same puppy picture. ...Who am I kidding though? I’m just as much of an obsessed “puppy dad”.
Tumblr media
That one Indy story means you’re caught up on our first three weeks in London. Back to our first trip.
There’s always a buzz when you’re going somewhere new, and that’s especially true in Europe. Every country is so accessible yet so unique. Spain is nothing like Sweden nor Morocco. They’re all just three hours away, but might as well be on different planets.
Tumblr media
This was proven true as our plane descended into Finland. The landscape was whiter than a Dave Mathews concert. Snow everywhere. No patches of civilization, just patches of evergreen forests covered in more white. We took off in metropolitan London and landed literally in the Arctic Circle.
Tumblr media
If this was evident on the flight in, it became especially clear as we left the airport. I asked our rental agent for the car keys and he looked back at me as if it were obvious: “They’re in the car - I started it 30 minutes ago.”
As we stepped out the airport doors, I realized why this should’ve been obvious — and also why his directions to the car were so emphatic. Everything was frozen, including the car had he not started it earlier. Chelsay and I would’ve been frozen too if we didn’t literally dive into the car.
After barely avoiding frostbite, my first thought upon hitting the road was “How can people survive here?” It’s just snow, ice, and sub-zero temperatures for months!
Tumblr media
youtube
But the Finnish rightly play up their winter wonderland. In fact, it’s close enough to the North Pole that Lapland claims to be the Home of Santa. Yes, of all the places in the entire world, Santa chose Rovaniemi, Finland to set up shop. What an honor.
Tumblr media
After a brief stop at Santa’s offices, we hit the road for our four-hour drive to Nellim. This place is remote, and that was exactly the intention. My two goals for the trip were (1) to see the Northern Lights and (2) to walk through snowy, silent Finish forests. Heading as far into Lapland as possible gave us the best chances for both.
The drive was a breeze: we had studded tires for the icy roads, and a James Acaster audiobook for entertainment. Plus the landscape kept us in awe - tall spruce forests lined the roadway and the black concrete was covered in ice, loose snow whipping around in the wind.
youtube
We were conscious of daylight on our drive up. In winter, the sun technically rises at 9:30 AM and sets at 3 PM. I say “technically” because there is actually far more daylight thanks to Nautical and Civil twilight, two things I’d never heard of before this trip. Given Lapland’s latitude, sunrise and sunset last about two hours each — rather than have a defined light time and dark time, Finnish days are just caught in perpetual semi-visibility... In addition to being “Home to Santa”, Lapland is apparently also the Twilight Zone.
Stop it Mike.
Anyway, we arrived at Nellim Wilderness Resort after sunset and nautical twilight and civil twilight and any other twilight. It was dark, but there were still a few activities available our first evening.
First, our resort had an illuminated sled hill. We didn’t know about the sledding beforehand, but once we’d seen it, Chelsay and I couldn’t resist.
Our riding styles were absolutely on brand: Chelsay laughed and screamed the entire way down (reminding me of our ride on The Mummy roller coaster at Universal Studios).
youtube
Meanwhile, I took sledding to an extreme by riding headfirst (likely breaking my ribs with what Chelsay called “The Salmon Jump”), then later trying to surf down (likely breaking my back with what Chelsay called “The Concussion Tumble”).
youtube
youtube
We were in the right country to recover from our (my) frigid falls, because the Finns love a hot sauna. In fact, they invented it! 1000 years ago, some Viking named Olaf probably tried that sled-surf thing, and a smoky sauna was his novel therapy!
Luckily the resort’s saunas were private, because similar to sled-surfing, I introduced a new twist to an old tradition: no one in the history of saunas has ever sweat as much as I did. Olaf included.
Outside of sledding and saunas, the other big nighttime activity in Lapland is searching for the Aurora Borealis. The Northern Lights are fairly common this time of year: about 50/50. The problem was the weather was due to be overcast & snowing throughout, so Chelsay and I came in with zero expectation.
We mentioned this to the receptionist at Nellim, but she wasn’t giving up hope. She said to keep our eyes peeled for stars: if you can see the stars, there’s a break in the clouds and a chance to see the Aurora. It didn’t hurt that our room was 50% window.
Tumblr media
Just as the receptionist predicted, we saw stars from about 10:30 to midnight. Staring out felt like being on a hunt, eyes dashing from one side of the sky to the other in hopes of seeing a green flash. Eventually I fell asleep, but the resort offers an Aurora alarm in case the lights appear.
Unfortunately there were no alarms either night.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed - the Northern Lights were one of the main reasons for visiting, and the brief star sightings provided a cruel tease of unwarranted hope. But the Aurora is just weather after all, and as the sun rose the next day, we remembered how cool it was to be in Nellim, Finland. Plus, the flip side of this snowy cloud cover was a clean and white-coated winter wonderland.
The fresh snow was perfect for our first activity of the day: dog sledding. These huskies were dying to get out and run, and I’ll never forget their excited gallop as we burst through the trees onto an open, frozen lake.

Chelsay and I switched off as driver, both flirting with danger. Chelsay nearly led us into Russia, while I ghost rode the sled. If you’re not familiar with ghost riding, it’s where you hop out of a moving (now driverless) vehicle and run beside it. Based on the look in our dogs’ eyes, I’m not sure they’d seen this before.
After the morning excitement, Chelsay and I had earned extra whipped cream on our hot chocolates. I’ll briefly mention the dining, which we both surprisingly enjoyed. Finnish food is not traditionally exciting (a lot of lingonberry and reindeer), but the Wilderness Resort came through for each meal: tasty lamb shanks, potatoes gratin, mushroom risotto, panna cotta, and more. And obviously a lot of hot chocolate.

We regained enough energy over lunch for our afternoon activity: snow shoeing. We planned to be out for a few hours, so bundled up in three layers of everything: socks, leggings, sweaters. We even doubled up on gloves.
Now insulated from the sub zero temperatures, we were motoring around the quiet, empty wilderness in no time. Nothing but clean snow and creaky timber for miles. Chelsay said it reminded her of the land of swirly twirly gumdrops from Elf: “Byeee Buddyyyy”

We climbed up hills, slid down slopes, trekked across frozen lakes, forged our own paths through the deep snow, and tracked the only other footprints we could find: wolf and reindeer.

Just as the sun was setting (at 3 PM), Chelsay and I stumbled into a peaceful and perfect grove. It was a beautiful setting and the most memorable moments I’ll take from the trip.
Tumblr media
The evergreen branches were coated in snowy white clumps, the crisp air was cold in our chests, and the only sound we could hear was crunch... crunch... crunch... as we gently shuffled across the deep snow.
Tumblr media
We returned to our room with that “exhausted but content” feeling. Our quads were burning but we’d accomplished what we came for.
That night, we enjoyed another remedial sauna - this one was somehow sweatier than the last. We didn’t have any energy or unbroken bones left for sledding that night, so we instead stayed in our room and watched Parasite (great movie) while sipping hot chocolate. I doubt I’ll remember what JOMO meant when I read this in 20 years, but this night describes it well.
We were making the long drive back to Rovaniemi around lunch the next day, but had plenty of time for morning walk. This time we attempted to go without snow shoes, but quickly realized that walking through deep snow is hard! Your feet sink with every step, and you have to contort your legs up & out of the snow to make any progress.
youtube
Chelsay compared it to the Sahara, except instead of sinking ankle-deep in sand, we were literally waist-deep. Luckily we persevered long enough to stumble across a pack of reindeer.
Tumblr media
With our quads burning, we figured the reindeer sighting was a good enough cap to our Lapland adventure. Sure, I wish we’d seen the Northern Lights, but Chelsay and I are still very content with our first trip back in Europe.
I say that without any doubt. Rewinding to our flight from London: Lapland’s frozen landscapes exceeded the “new city” excitement I felt as our departing plane rolled toward the runway.
Lapland is a different planet: part winter wonderland, part uninhabitable wasteland. Its frigid wilderness is unlike any of the previous places we’ve visited, but the craziest part is that it was all so easily accessible. Chelsay and I were 250 miles into the Arctic Circle, literally a short walk into Russia’s northernmost territories, yet remained just a three hour flight from London.
That’s why we moved back: because every trip Chelsay and I take has the potential to bring us somewhere new, special, and completely different from anywhere we’ve ever been.
I can’t wait for our next departing plane to roll its way to the runway.

Crazy ‘Bout an Autmobile: https://ift.tt/2YIHPWT
Every woman I know is crazy ’bout an automobile…
Ry Cooder
For people who live in other parts of the world, one of the many baffling aspects of American life –- aside from, among other things, its racism, its prudishness about sex, and its tolerance of violence — is the fetishizing of The Automobile. Men tend to be even crazier about automobiles than women, and the names of cars often reflect aggressive masculinity: Gladiator, Roadmaster, Rampage, Cutlass, Marauder, Mustang, Cobra, Ram, Bronco… the list goes on. During my adolescence, the car of my dreams was no less than a Rocket 88. Alas, I was unable to afford one. This was probably good fortune and a guardian angel at work.
Normally, cars and trucks don’t darken my thoughts, but the Nevada County Fair, now in progress, has brought them into my awareness in the form of Monster Trucks. Here’s a photo of one flattening what’s left of an automobile in front of the grandstand at the fair.
Tumblr media
More than one wag has suggested that it would be more accurate to call them Monster Tires. But nearly everyone agrees that a large part of their popularity is the monster racket they make. Our home lies less than a mile from the fairgrounds, so for the past two evenings, the usual sounds of the fair — country-western music, the carnival, and the happy shrieks of children riding Ferris wheels and roller coasters — have all been drowned out by the snarling engines of monster trucks. We’ll shut the windows again tonight. It’s the last night of the fair, and the featured event is the Demolition Derby. No need to guess what get demolished.
This is not a complaint; after all, the fair happens only once a year, and who would want to deny the thrill to other people of watching — and hearing — vehicles destroying other vehicles? Especially if one shared the same — albeit muted — pleasure? I don’t dislike automobiles. I own a good one, but I’m far from crazy ’bout them. So you can imagine the ambivalent feeling when, one afternoon years ago, I witnessed, in a vacant lot across the street from my studio in San Francisco, an American icon from the Ford Motor Company blazing into extinction, like the death of a dream.

Ember – Acrylic and collage on masonite – 27 x 38 inches
Painting “Ember” was an attempt to create out of destruction an image of transcendence. First, I painted a night sky full of stars and five trees in a row, and then opened the middle three as if they were a door into another dimension. Behind the Ford I painted what I saw across from my studio: a hotel and three other buildings, the furthest of which was the Bank of America on the corner of Van Ness Ave. and Market Street.
Tumblr media
The silhouette of a sky-blue bush sprouts from the roof of the bank and clouds emerge from it to float in a Sun-lit sky. This image was created a long time ago, but I find that thoughts of Death and Rebirth are never far from my imagination. I paint them still and likely always will, even though “always,” like everything else, will in time come to an end.
