Scottish Folklore of Cursed “Dolls”

There is a rarely talked about (though seemingly uncommon) historical custom in Scotland that will likely sound a lot like the exaggerated “voodoo dolls” (which, despite the name, are not prominent in Haitian Vodou or Louisiana Voodoo) of media.

The Scottish version is a doll that is a form of sympathetic magic(a magic category invented by Scottish folklorist James George Frazer).

Sympathetic magic has two varieties; one of which requires similarities, and the other requires contact or “contagion.”

“The former principle may be called the Law of Similarity, the latter the Law of Contact or Contagion. From the first of these principles, namely the Law of Similarity, the magician infers that he can produce any effect he desires merely by imitating it: from the second he infers that whatever he does to a material object will affect equally the person with whom the object was once in contact, whether it formed part of his body or not.” “The Golden Bough” by James George Frazer(1878)

The dolls of this topic are a form of imitation type sympathetic magic. For these, the dolls were crafted with ill-intent in the likeness of the person you wanted to curse, then what was done to the doll was thought to harm who it was made to look like.

While they are called dolls, they are not really what you might expect a child to have. Instead, they are sculpted of clay but not cured in an oven.

“An image of the victim was made of clay, and because it had a certain resemblance to him (likeness denoting real connection), it was believed that whatever was done to the image would produce a similar effect on the person whom it represented. “ “The misty isle of Skye : Its scenery, It’s people, Its story” by Eneas Mackay, Stirling, (1927)

It could be stuck with pins and needles to cause aches and pains, or you could do far worse. For example, if you put the doll into a stream, as the clay broke up in the water, so was said to gradually happen to the targets health.

“When any one wished evil to another he made a clay image of the person to be injured, and placed it in a stream with the head of the image against the current. It was believed that, as the clay was dissolved by the water, the health of the person represented would decline. The spell, however, would be broken if the image was discovered and removed from the stream. It is perhaps no surprise that this was not a type of magic talked fondly about, and is instead classified in books as an evil act of black magic.

Rating cursed/killer dolls (as an objectum person)

Disclaimer: This list is not going to be very complete, because I rarely watch movies :-P

Number one: Chucky

I've watched most of the movies in the franchise and half of the series, and overall, I think this little guy is really funny. In terms of killer dolls, he's really iconic, but as I'm judging by my standards (as an objectum person who's attracted to dolls), Chucky isn't exactly someone I'm attracted to. I don't think I could handle spending an afternoon with him btw (he would easily turn me into a target lol). So my rating for him is: 7/10.

Number two: Tiffany

Tiffany is also a very funny character and I think she is very stunning. Honestly, I like her more than Chucky. So my rating for her is: 9/10.

Number three: Annabelle

I have to confess that I don't like the movies, because in my opinion they are very weak and this lady here does not have much personality (unless you think that being cursed and killing people count as personality traits), but as I have a weakness for porcelain dolls (and the design of Annabelle is actually pretty cool), my rating for her is: 6/10.

Number four: Brahms (also known as Brenno for me and my sister)

I don't know if he fits as a cursed/killer doll (I say that based in the first movie of "The Boy"), but as he is a very well-made and quite adorable doll, I will grant him an exception. Seriously, he's disturbingly beautiful. My rating for him is: 8/10.

Number five: Lilith

I didn't remember much about "Finders Keepers", but now rereading the synopsis I realize how racist and culturally offensive the plot is. It's a seriously mediocre movie, but this little doll is very cute. My rating for her is: 6/10.

Number six: Megan

Megan is....wonderful. She's beautiful, sarcastic and she dresses very well. I seriously think she can be as iconic as Chucky (or even more, but I won't get into this discussion) and....oh, I'm in love with her. My rating for her is: 10/10.

Please, everyone, I'm begging you.

STOP shopping for cursed dolls at shops like this.

This is not a healthy or a safe environment for them to live in. Each individual cursed doll needs at least a two bedroom apartment and a family of no fewer than three individuals to haunt and spread their curse around. Confining so many of them together is going to lead to fighting, then their curses will tangle together, causing more problems for the surrounding neighborhood, while offering the dolls themselves no real enrichment.

Remember- a cursed doll isn't just for Halloween. A cursed doll is for the rest of your life.

"Anything yet?" Megumi blinks to hear this but he looks from his cell phone. He didn't know what was going on, giving the thought that something might have happened. Gojo was told Kisho still was on his on going mission to find the cursed items that came from that party. However, it leaves another wondering what was going on. He did have some help along the way so it was something.

Right now, Megumi was told by Gojo to check on him but he was not answering the text messages he sent a while ago. "I don't think so. I can try to call him and see if he can answer the phone instead. Or maybe something is effecting the signal."

"I guess that's possible but give it a shot." Yuji said. Megumi nods and goes to do that, seeing Kisho's number and hits speed dial and waits for him to find something.

"I'm sure they are fine you two..just call them and we will see their fine." Nobara said. Miko agrees hoping they were alright. She wanted to go with them but she was still on stand by to recover.

"S..same here..." she mutters seeing Megumi still waiting for Kisho to pick up.
