Just gonna throw a few prompts around tumblr to see what sticks.

Jiang Cheng fails a timetravel fix-it, it results in Wei Wuxian pulling a MianMian AU

Jiang Wanyin goes missing from Cloud Recesses a few weeks after Wei Wuxian was sent back to Lotus Pier.

Madam Yu irrationally banishes Wei Wuxian for failing to protect Jiang Wanyin despite him not being there.

Rogue Cultivator Wei Wuxian goes investigating to find Jiang Cheng and discovers him alive and well but deaged to a small child with memory loss.

Now Wei Wuxian could return to Lotus Pier... But Jiang Cheng was never fully appreciated there and he's such a cute tot now. Also Wei Wuxian is wary of the unreasonable expectations that young Jiang Cheng would be burdened with to 'do it right this time' by Madam Yu.

So Wei Wuxian gets his dream cottage and farm early and raises Jiang Cheng (renaming him as well because its a new start) again far away from said toxic environment with all the unconditional love and support he should have gotten growing up.

Prioritising parenting over night hunting (because he remembers being orphaned on the streets) Wei Wuxian sits out the Sunshot Campaign completely(to the extent of purposely ignoring all cultivation world news), The Sunshot Campaign lasts long enough that without Wei Wuxian all the sects are in ruins at the end of it.

Years later Jiang Cheng encounters something on a night hunt that restores his memory and the reason he was deaged in the first place. Jiang Cheng had travelled back in time to 'fix' things (funnily enough removing Wei Wuxian from the Jiang before he could antagonise Wen Chao) but the clash of his original core and the transplanted core sent him into a Qi Deviation that de-aged him.

16 years after he was de-aged Jiang Cheng investigates the changed world outside of his home and things are to put it lightly, so much worse.

Lotus Pier is basically gone, Madam Yu is missing her right hand, Yanli is grieving over dead Jin Zixuan. Rebuilding Lotus Pier is impossible because Madam Yu has zero support because of her behaviour and Yanli is basically a grieving ghost.

Lan WangJi is still in a coma from fighting the Xanwu of Slaughter 16ish years ago.

Jin Guangyao is Sect Leader Jin through lack of better option, he very much enjoyed giving Madam Jin the boot from Koi Tower.

All the great sects have been reduced to minor sects with little chance of ever rising again.

Jiang Cheng has no idea how to fix this mess, but he's going to need Wei Wuxian's help.

This. This is an amazing idea.

Also, I was a lot nicer on Wei Wuxian since I could have had Madam Yu whip him before kicking him out. Let's just say that Madam Yu was too distraught or grieved to think about dealing with Wei Wuxian like that, okay?

It happened a few years after Wei Wuxian’s death. Jiang Cheng had been drowning in his sorrows and had had enough of this. ENough of being alone, enough of missing his parents, his sister, his....his brother. He hated this feeling of guilt over leading the siege, over not doing enough to make everything right.

And Wei Wuxian’s notes contained just the thing.

Time travel.

It would be risky. If he failed, he would lose his core. But what hasn’t Jiang Cheng lost already?

Laying down the prepared array, he took a deep breath and poured his spiritual energy in. The array lit up and Jiang Cheng felt himself being sucked in.

Pain.

All he could feel was pain. Sharp and constant and crushing.

Everything went black.

Wei Wuxian had been peacefully studying some random arrays when a shidi of his burst into the room.

“Da-shixiong. Da-shixiong! You have to run now!”

“Huh? Shidi, what’s wrong?”

“It’s Yu-furen! She seemed angry and I eavesdropped and she said she’s kicking you out! I think she’s serious this time!!”

"What reason did she give this time?" Wei Wuxian rolled his eyes. Madam Yu made this same threat at least three times a month.

"She said that it's your fault Jiang-gongzi went missing. So....so...."

"Jiang Cheng is missing?!" Wei Wuxian exclaimed.

"Yeah, he went missing on a night hunt at the Cloud Recesses. But never mind that, Da-Shixiong, hurry!"

Frowning, but knowing that this was most likely not a joke, he quickly packed everything - even Suibian - up into qiankun pouches and hid them in his robes.

His shidi left and Madam Yu burst into his room soon after, storming over to him. He tensed up, knowing that that expression meant that he might be punished.

Madam Yu grabbed his collar and dragged him away, tossing him to the ground outside Lotus Pier.

"Yu-furen, what--?" He was smacked across the face as Madam Yu glared at him.

"It's your fault." She hissed at him. "If you were there, you could have prevented A' Cheng from going missing! If only you hadn't been so disobedient--Get out!" Her expression was thunderous and promised a world of pain if he didn't go. "Leave your bell and get lost!"

Shakily, Wei Wuxian untied his bell and ran away from there. He didn't want to stick around to find out what would happen if he tried to contest her decision.

The scars on his back was more than enough proof of what happened when he disobeyed.

The first step to his new life was finding a steady source of income and that was easy enough. he'd built up a reputation in his time with the Jiang of helping whenever needed so people were more than willing to employ him to assist with local hauntings and minor yaos. (Madam Yu hated going on such easy hunts and often ignored the cry for help in places like these.)

He rather enjoyed this life rather than the restrictive one he led at Yunmeng Jiang where he had to think about politics and the like when no one taught him how to act better.

Now that he had enough money, Wei Wuxian decided to go investigate Jiang Cheng's disappearance in Gusu. One quick ask around for someone of Jiang Cheng's description and Wei Wuxian headed towards the forest where he was last scene.

After wandering without aim for a while, Wei Wuxian wanted to give up, but soon heard crying in a cave nearby. Wary of it being some kind of creature that wanted to lure him into a trap, he drew Suibian and inched closer to the sound.

Upon seeing a flash of Yunmeng purple, Wei Wuxian gasped as he recognized the robes.

"Jiang Cheng?!" He cried, rushing in.

He couldn't have expected what he saw next.

Cocooned in his now much larger robes was a mini Jiang Cheng!

The child looked frightened and curled away from him, eyes blank and unknowing.

Oh. "Umm, hello" He said quietly and he knelt down a distance away from Jiang Cheng. "What are you doing here?"

Jiang Cheng stayed quiet and looked at him warily. "....Got lost. Got hungry and got lost."

"I see." Wei Wuxian felt guilty. He should have come sooner! "Then, shall gege share some food with you?" He rummaged in his qiankun pouch and brought out two apples. He ate one to show that it was safe and handed the other to the child.

Jiang Cheng eyed it and moved forward to take it. Wei Wuxian did not move, not wanting to frighten him. He quickly grabbed the apple and chowed down on it. Knowing that he'd likely choke, Wei Wuxian carefully put down a waterskin that the child quickly grabbed after he started choking.

Wei Wuxian sighed in relief seeing the mini Jiang Cheng okay now. But.....Jiang Cheng didn't remember him. That was obvious after Wei Wuxian had asked whether he wanted to go home and was given a confused look and a quiet 'to whom?'.

Now Wei Wuxian had a choice. He could quietly return to Lotus Pier with Jiang Cheng and perhaps get back into the good graces of Madam Yu or......he could take care of Jiang Cheng himself.

Jiang Cheng had never been appreciated by his parents, with his father being too strict and his mother always berating him and comparing him to others (though mostly it was Wei Wuxian). Wei Wuxian always wanted to take Jiang Cheng away from such a place where he was never given encouragement but he never could given his status and place among the Jiang.

But now.......

Determination shone in Wei Wuxian's eyes.

"Baba, baba!" A child squealed happily. "You're back!"

Wei Wuxian smiled back, picking up his child. "I'm back! Have you been good?"

"Yes, yes! I even cleaned the house!"

Wei Wuxian gasped delightedly. "Oh my god, baobei! You're the best!"

"Mm!"

It had been nearly a year since Wei Wuxian had found the amnesiac de-aged Jiang Cheng and a few months since they finally settled down in a cottage on the outskirts of the cultivation world. Wei Wuxian had worked tirelessly to get them this far and he has to say, he's done a magnificent job at child rearing!

It had taken a few weeks to get Jiang Cheng to trust him enough to leave with him and another week to travel away from the sects. Along the way, Wei Wuxian took lower level night hunts to earn some income. Any time there was talk of a strong monster abouts, Wei Wuxian considered helping them, but knew that he was one bad night hunt away from leaving Jiang Cheng on the streets to fend for himself.

His parents' ends were a stark reminder of that so Wei Wuxian did not take the night hunts. However, he did not feel good about leaving the innocent to fend for themselves until whatever sect was nearby deemed it worthy enough of their attention. For places like these, Wei Wuxian stayed longer in order to create some talismans to ensure protection against such beasts. He was always paid for his work, of course - he has a child to feed, after all! - but tried not to deprive a family of all their funds. He wasn't heartless.

And so, life had passed like this until he assisted an elderly couple near the edge of a place called Yunnan. The couple had no children to speak of and no relatives so they had asked Wei Wuxian if he could look after his garden and cottage once they passed.

Wei Wuxian wasn't one to refuse since this meant a steady roof over their heads and a constant source of food nearby.

He accepted.

That's where he's living now with Jiang Cheng who's been newly renamed to Wei Hu (lake), courtesy name: Chunyu (spring rain).

They'd been living without troubles for some time now that Wei Wuxian had largely left the cultivation world. Of course, he occasionally disguised himself and headed to his merchant who sold his talismans for him from time to time, but aside from that, he largely stayed at home with his adorable child, farming away while his donkey brayed in the background.

This life was one he had always wanted. A partner, a child, him and a donkey. He's missing a partner, a lifelong companion, for now but he could be content without one. Not many people want a single father as their spouse and Wei Wuxian could be content with that.

(There were whispers of a war between the cultivation sects but why should that matter to Wei Wuxian? He was no longer a part of them.)

Many years later.......

Wei Chunyu was on a night hunt by himself! His baba had finally allowed him to go hunt beasts alone!! Baba was always protective over him despite how strong he had gotten. After finally managing to hit his baba while they sparred, he was allowed to go hunt for himself without supervision.

Licking his lips, he readied his sword for whatever monster lurked before him.

Jiang Cheng felt like he had been hit by a bear yao. Just what on earth had happened?? Shaking his dizzy head, he tried to remember what had happened.

I activated the array and I remember seeing my much younger hands and then..... Jiang Cheng jolted in shock. I qi-deviated!I qi-deviated and turned into a child because of a dissonance with the core from my future life and the core of my past life! But why? The array said my cores should merge, but maybe....because mine was brought back by Baoshan Sanren.....

Jiang Cheng gathered himself and then remembered. He remembered the life he had lead after that.

Wei Wuxian.....adopted me! He adopted me and took care of me and.....and loved me. Even though I.....I....I was planning on removing him from the Jiang before he could ever cross paths with Wen Chao. I mean, I guess, in a way, I did remove him from the Jiang but what happened with the war? It's been so long.

Shaking off his dread, he strapped his sword to his side and went into town. Asking discretely around for some information, citing that he didn't know anything because he's from Yunnan, Jiang Cheng held his head in his hands in distress.

The war had been won by the Sunshot allies. But all the sects were in ruin by the ends of it.

The Wen sect is still there but only the healers and civilians had been left. Wen Qing had taken ahold of the remnants of the clan, given reparations to the sects for Qishan Wen's crimes and dissolved the Qishan Wen sect and soon disappearing with her family from the rest of the world.

Lotus Pier still met the same end, having been decimated. But his mother was still alive, merely missing her right hand and some pride. (Though her reputation as someone too fierce and always angry had driven away what little recruits the Jiang had.) His sister - he could nearly cry at that - was alive but Jin Zixuan was still dead, leaving her as a husk of herself. Jin Guangyao had become the head of the Jin sect after his father's untimely death and booting Madam Jin back to her maiden family.

The Lan sect is barely hanging on, with Lan Xichen grieving over his comatose brother who had become like that through the draining fight with the Xuanwu of Slaughter and Lan Qiren barely alive.

The Nie sect has been reduced to nearly nothing as well, what with Nie Mingjue half-dead from multiple qi-deviations and Nie Huaisang who was suddenly thrust into the Sect Leader role unprepared.

"It's a mess." He muttered to himself. "It's all a mess."

Jiang Cheng has no idea how to fix this mess, but he's going to need Wei Wuxian's help. But....how?

No matter how much of a genius Wei Wuxian was, there was no bringing back the dead from life, not with how uninvolved Wei Wuxian was with demonic cultivation in this life and how the bodies had probably been cremated already.

Of course, he could rally together the Jiang sect again but if rumors of how volatile his mother was were true......perhaps it would be best not to provoke her.

They could bring his sister with them. She was alive and....well, not quite well, but she was alive! And maybe taking her out of the cultivation world will do her some good. It sure did Jiang Cheng a whole lot better....wait. What is he thinking?!

Jiang Cheng shook his head. No matter how comfortable his life was with Wei Wuxian, he shouldn't be thinking like this! But.....his sister deserves some peace after everything that's happened to her.

And Lan Wangji......well. Having a sect leader in his debt would be nice. Wei Wuxian was sure to concoct some sort of miracle with his talismans and bring Lan Wangji back to consciousness. If Lan Xichen were to be grateful to them, it would surely help with.....something. Maybe he could even solve Nie Mingjue's health issues!

But he would have to discuss everything first and maybe even tell Wei Wuxian the truth of how this all occurred?

Jiang Cheng packed up his stuff and headed back......back home. Because it was his home now. Wei Wuxian had always irritated him and Jiang Cheng even hated him, despised the very thought of him. But in this life.....it was different. Wei Wuxian......was a great father and raised him extremely well.

But.....what if Wei Wuxian grew angry with him for all of this? He didn't know what to think or how Wei Wuxian would act.

As his mind clouded up with worries, he hadn't realized he had already returned.

"A' Yu? Are you back already?"

Jiang Cheng froze up and Wei Wuxian's warm smile graced him. "Uhh...."

"Hm? What's wrong A' Yu? Did the night hunt go wrong? Did you get hurt?"

"No. It went fine. But....But Baba--" God, that sounds so weird! "--I have something to tell you."

"You can tell me anything. You know I'm always here to listen."

Jiang Cheng's heart warmed. "Well, you see, the thing is....."

He'd figure this out. They'd both figure this out. And maybe, this time around, the three of them would always be together.

He looked at his hand, considered for a minute, the point of his tongue sticking out between his teeth, put another finger up, then put it down, then up again, before he finally shrugged. “That many,” he said, as if he’d given them a satisfactory answer. In which Wei Wuxian is cursed, Lan Wangji is protective, and Jiang Cheng is tired. All three of them have to learn how to deal with each other in the aftermath.

Mojo's comments: Oh, this was so nice. I had a rough day today, and apparently needed some slightly traumatized, de-aged, skittish wwx in my life to make it better. :)

Excerpt: “Slow down, Wei Ying,” Jiang Wanyin grumbled, and frowned when Wei Ying froze up at his words and swallowed hard, tension pulling his spine into a straight line. “I mean, I just don’t want you to choke, that’s all, ok?” He thumbed a stray grain of rice from Wei Ying’s cheek in a surprisingly gentle gesture. “No one is going to take it away, and there will be more when next you are hungry, a-Ying,” Lan Wangji said gently, and Wei Ying looked doubtful, but he nodded. Jiang Wanyin’s eyes widened with understanding. Jin Ling took a second longer to process the implication, but Lan Wangji could see realization passing over his features as he studied Wei Ying. Sizhui was watching Wei Ying, too, the slightest of creases above his brows to mark his feelings on the matter. “Sizhui did the same thing when he was young. It took several years to break the habit entirely.”

6. Help please? I think it was on tumblr here. Modern day fic where Madam Lan is alive and LZ and WY get together as teens but the Jiang's kick WY out and he comes to live with the Lans who all love and adore him. Later on LX brings Meng Yao, who he is dating, to met the family. Meng Yao doesn't get a warm reception and gets jealous of how the Lans treat WY. LX then explains WY history with the Lan family which Meng Yao tries to use against WY. The family then gets mad at LX for telling. Thanks! @isis-moon

I remember in a chapter WWX explains to LXC why he's asking for sanctuary and shows the whip marks on his back and is rushed to the healers.

11. Looking for two fics:

A) The one where wwx explodes a wen’s head because they were going to kill lwj. I remember wwx being injured in this fic and constantly in bed save for sitting at the table working on wards and talismans. He made talismans for lwj to use while he was away fighting. I remember jzx helping wwx change his bandages and helping him to the battle field because he couldn’t walk well. On the battle field wwx sees lwj about to be killed by a wen and makes the wen’s head explode. I think lwj in that scene chose his last view to be the sky instead of his killer’s face but he instead got covered in blood and brain matter. All this takes place in cloud recesses btw.

B) The one where wwx is immortal (i think) and lwj lives in the burial mounds with him and the wen remnants. I’m not sure how they get to this point but they travel to Qinghe to ask for his help with something I think but wwx ends up sending nmj is dying and helps him too. I remember more or less the conversation when wwx met nmj went like “huh this is a bit awkward. Sorry to ask but you DO know you’re dying right?” And nmj responds something like “yes, I’m aware.”

14. Hello, me again! 😆 I'm looking for another wangxian fic that I would like to re-read. What I remember is: Jiang Cheng kills Lan Zhan in some sort of time travel ritual (?). Jiang Cheng then goes back to the past, but the ritual has erased Lan Wangji from existence. Even so, in this new timeline both Lan Xichen & Wei Ying feel that something/someone is missing. It's post Sunshot and Jiang Cheng uses an old treaty with the Lan that was some kind of "in the future" betrothal agreement in order to open negotiations for trade, using WWX as the bait. 16. Hello!! I've been trying to find a fic where Lwj doesn't know that the elders told Lsz to stop calling him a-die, and just assumed it was Lsz's choice. It hurt him, but he didn't complain because he wanted it to be Lsz's choice. Okay so um. Assuming that this takes place post canon and JC doesn't like...lose his memories during the de-aging, and just wakes up one day fully kiddified CWN-style, he would probably really....hate it lmao. The Vulnerability of it all, yk? On top of that, while JL might find him cute enough to not put his kid Jiujiu down(except said Jiujiu will hiss and howl until he is compelled to do so), I don't know about a Jiang Cheng who assumes that he's genuinely unlikeable and won't go out seeking affection in general. Because he certainly won't ask it from his disciples and definitely not from Mr "It's all in the past now" "It was repaying a debt" because what is he going to ask? Hi, you gave your core to me and shouldered all of that by yourself because apparently you couldn't bother to tell a single thing to me so now I want so cling to you? Hah. Like he has ever stuck around.

...... honestly it will probably make him feel worse. The first time around his father barely held him and it was because he was too much like his mother (inherently unlikeable). This time too no one will pick him up because.... he's inherently unlikeable. Poor guy. At least he has his nephew.

Short answer: Jiang Cheng would love to be physically clingy de-aged but he would die before asking for it because thank you Jiang Fengmian for being the father of the year and to canon(Wei Wuxian) for making him the isolated widow of the decade.

Hi! I have a question, what was Jiang Cheng's cultivation level before the core transfer and what was his cultivation level after the transfer?

Hi there anon!

This is difficult because MXTX doesn't really go into detail as to how her cultivation levels work. It seems that once a core is formed it's very much considered a done deal for cultivator ability and reputation regarding core strength.

My point being, that Jiang Cheng in his own right was talented above normal mortal achievement to have formed a core as well when he was young. Usually for cultivation lore it's supposed to be very high fantasy and takes at least one hundred years to break through from Qi Condensation to the Foundation Stage (the refinement of Qi strength above a normal mortal).

Then what usually follows (now this starts to how many "levels" you choose to pack in to achieve heavenly achievement), is:

Core Formation: The flow of Qi is solidified in the body. Further strength is now available to the cultivator and it means the dao path has been refined, whatever that may be, and dependent on plot this can mean longevity can be achieved at this point in some capacity and cultivators are even able to choose how to look in age.

Nascent Soul: The Cultivator is able to essentially fail safe their soul and in the case of death of the physical body the soul is still able to cultivate itself to once more create a physical form (give it hundreds of years though).

Worldly/Earth Immortal: The Cultivator can't be harmed or killed by normal mortal means and are difficult to kill usually impervious to mortal illnesses at this point but now in danger of Qi deviations causing de-ascension to Core Formation again by Heavenly Tribulations (This is most definitely not a thing within Mo Dao Zu Shi) and in most high cultivation plots THIS is where The Cultivator can even start to dare to think entering a Cultivation Sect as a member and are once more a small time fish jumping from your elite pond where you became king into the ocean of many other like you once again.

Sky Immortal: The Cultivator has fully defined their own Dao, the body can regenerate itself from any physical wounds. Get the whole fancy concept of personal soul realm now and access to others as well for a short period of time.

Heavenly Immortal (The Cultivator has ascended in ability to be one of the elite and are essentially a god in abilities). Congrats you're a bad ass now and can fuck with even Primordial existences.

These "levels" consist of Nine Heavenly Tribulations each within the designated sphere where the Cultivator falls within ability. With these definitions listed we can now see how MXTX shook these all together and squashed together general lore all into the Core Formation Level for all our on page cultivators. So, in essence all are on the same level, of Core Formation only still. Jiang Cheng is the little fish in the pond that is in the ocean with all other fish as well as the others!

If one has truly achieved full true immortality remains to be seen by anyone in plot as longevity does not equal immortality if we are working by traditional cultivation methods and achievements.

All this to say, that Jiang Cheng is not an untalented hack whatsoever and is very capable in the low level cultivator setting we are given, and is doing well either way, old core, or Wei Wuxian's core, as it's only considered a power generator in itself for an extra boost for humans. Cores are like batteries, interchangeable and doesn't really care what or where it is as they are not sentient. It is the person that chooses to push the limits of their dao to break through ascensions for that core power. The core does not make the person, it is the person that makes the core.

god it kills me that i cannot help you much, if at all. i haven't read a xicheng fics in months (maybe possibly a whole year) now which means all my recs are definitely fics i've already mentioned before AND i know none of those have even a sprinkle of the kind of dynamic you're looking for, mostly because i tend to lean towards post-canon xicheng and at that point it would be hard to have a starry-eyed jiang cheng lmao

So I finally finished reading TGCF! (The main novel, I haven't gotten to the extras yet). I watched the first season of the donghua ages ago (right after I watched what was available of the MDZS donghua at the time and before I read the MDZS novel), then started reading TGCF as the first volumes of the official English versions were releasing and fell off.

My original plan was to "catch up" through book 5 and just keep up with the official releases. As soon as I finished book 5 I immediately abandoned that plan and went straight to the fan translations (whatever, I'll still be buying the officials as they release so I don't feel too guilty about it).

Anyway, I am feeling..... surprisingly normal about this book? I enjoyed it and had fun reading it and so far have not felt any inklings of obsessive derangement over it.

(Extremely long and rambling first impressions/thoughts after a single quick read below the cut, probably not that interesting. May contain major spoilers, and sorta comparing it to MDZS and specifically JC a bit just because the comparisons get pushed a lot because of the overlap in the fandoms)

Anyway, as a Jiang Cheng Enjoyer I've fairly often seen people say things like 'you should just read TGCF, Mu Qing is actually what JC stans wish Jiang Cheng was' or 'Mu Qing is Jiang Cheng but done right' and I just....... kinda don't see it?

Anyway... Is it just me? Am I stupid and missing something?

I mean, there are some obvious parallels and MXTX very clearly has a pattern/dynamic/formula she likes with the 'best friend side characters' slot, re-used some similar surface-level descriptions for Mu Qing that had been applied to Jiang Cheng (bad-tempered, sarcastic, unlikable, good looking, etc). So I'm definitely not saying people are totally wrong for seeing a connection there.

But they didn't actually feel all that similar to me beyond a handful of traits? And not only because of the tragic lack of jilfy purple electro-whip.

I think part of the problem is that Mu Qing suffered from a serious case of "tell, don't show" in his portrayal... in the text we're being told by other characters that he's so unlikable or has such a nasty personality or is so untrustworthy... but then rarely or never actually says or does anything "on camera" to show that?

Like, this isn't "he has done nothing wrong!" in the "I shall protect this precious blorbo of my heart" way, it's in the "ummmmmm... he has actually... not done anything wrong in this situation...? And I am confused as to why these characters are reacting to him in a way that is so wildly out of proportion to what has actually happened?"

As much as I love Jiang Cheng, he does at least actually say some mean things "on screen" in the novel to earn that bad-tempered sharp-tongued characterization. I might personally think he was perfectly justified in saying about 98% of them and being pissed as hell, but at least he actually does the being angry and bitter and verbal lashing out that he's characterized with. (Though I think he actually does a lot less of it than people seem to think, as most of the time he's just being pretty normal actually. But there are some scenes at least.) Of course, conversely, Wei Wuxian does also do many more actually bad things to balance it out too and make JC's on-screen anger/reactions make a lot more sense.

But Mu Qing on the other hand... a few snippy comments and some eye rolling? Everything else always ends up being someone else baselessly accusing him based on some accidental circumstances that got cleared up with reasonable explanations. His involvement in the whole turf war over the meditation place was mostly him showing up after the rest of them had already made up their minds and he was trying to de-escalate the situation without losing the job he was using to support his mother with or creating more problems.

The only kinda bad things I think he does (be okay with the idea of using the Human Face Disease against the Yong'an people to stop it from spreading in the Xianle capital city) is one of the few things that nobody actually has any issue with him for! You could argue that it was bad to get Hua Cheng kicked out of the army... but also he was 14 and there are no actual details given and tbh that kid was kinda creepy from an outside perspective (even if I liked him)...

To be honest I'd seen a few people making vague comments about his "betrayal" in the past so I knew it was coming, but "I'm gonna go take care of my mom instead of doing these former rich fuck's laundry" was so deeply underwhelming on the betrayal scale I was like "wait, that's it?"

I mean there was not even a siege involved...? Not a single declaration of hatred? Not even a little bit of threatened torture?

Anyway, I was already still feeling some kind of way about that royal laundry situation when I got to the scene in Mt Tonglu where Mu Qing is all "I was in awe of you, you're a better person than me and I wanted to be your friend" while Xie Lian is like "um well you'd spit in someone's cup but you wouldn't poison it so I don't want you to die I guess."

I just felt sort of vaguely put off by the whole exchange and the sense of a total lack of reciprocity from Xie Lian. His whole vibe is "well I don't dislike you enough to let you die, and saving people is my thing in general so, y'know, here I am saving you."

Because what made the whole dynamic work in MDZS was how (even if the characters didn't necessarily know it about the other) they just cared about each other so much, to an absolutely unhinged degree, and that felt missing here. So even though WWX has some of the same vibe of negative or resentful opinions of JC at points, it hits different because they're laid on the backdrop of an utterly unhinged sacrifice specifically and uniquely for Jiang Cheng (which, unknown to WWX, was needed because of a more standard in type but but still unhinged sacrifice of his own that was specifically and uniquely for WWX)

I don't necessarily mind that specific relationship being different or less intense in TGCF (in fact I prefer that it's not just a copy-paste of the same characters going by different names with a bit more polish, the way some people made it sound like it would be), but the way that specific scene played out given the backdrop of how MQ keeps getting treated throughout the rest of the story just felt icky to me. Idk.

A lot of the way the characters interacted with each other just felt like the action and reactions were a little mismatched or something? Something about the behaviors involved didn't ring as painfully, horribly, clearly true to me as they did in so many MDZS scenes.

Anyway I did enjoy both Mu Qing and Feng Xin as characters, I'll definitely be indulging in some FengQing content (recs/links welcome if anyone actually read this far lol), just specifically their relationship with Xie Lian did not inspire in me even a teensy fraction of the depths of absolute feral obsession that the Yunmeng Shuangjie relationship does. It... just did not resonate that way with me. If I had to speculate (in a wild and baseless fashion, source: my ass), I think that toning down the intensity might have even been intentional on the author's part this go around.

Anyway a lot of that was mostly because the expectation of a strong parallel and deep reaction to the Xianle trio's relationship was pre-planted in my mind, and such expectations are generally always doomed to fall short anyway.

As far as the rest of the novel, like I said - it was generally quite enjoyable, I had fun reading it, I'm certainly not trying to trash it! I'd say I actually overall enjoyed the HuaLian relationship developing in the novel itself more than WangXian, in terms of how the flirting was executed. Like "what if you had an extremely dangerous and fervently obsessed stalker, but also make it cute". I don't dislike WangXian, but for me their relationship was just a fun side-plot and not what I really cared about or kept reading for. I did find the Hong-er and lantern ghost flashback scenes quite touching and sweet.

The first ~200 chapters (by the web novel serialization chapter numbers) I'd say were generally constructed better than MDZS, so I see where people say there was a bit of a level up there. The last ~40ish chapters the pacing felt kind of off to me, like there was just too much crammed in and MXTX just wanted it to be over and done with.

The 'uncovering secrets of an ancient lost empire/kingdom' type of plot is my absolute jam, my favoritest trope of all time, I actually loved the concepts there. It was like a two-for-one, since we got the learn about the fall of Xianle which scratched that itch a little bit, and then the full-on mystery aspect with Wuyong. I wish there had been more time spent on the mystery/uncovering information about Wuyong aspect of the plot rather than the answers coming relatively quickly.

Unsurprisingly in addition to Feng Xin and Mu Qing, I was a huge fan of Yushi Huang, Ling Wen, Shi Qingxuan, He Xuan, Lang Qianqiu (his adorable golden retriever energy is irresistible when combined with a Tragic Backstory), Guzi, Yin Yu, Quan Yizhen

Surprise favs were Pei Ming (I'd only seen through the donghua S1 so I kinda had him categorized in my mind as the offscreen God of Fuckboys, but ended up liking him an unreasonable amount) and Qi Rong

Anyway I had all of these thoughts while I was reading then felt a bit guilty about them when I read the postscript because I am the person she was afraid of coming over to read TGCF after MDZS :x
