Bright the Day We Met
by ereshai (@ereshai)
G, 1k, Wangxian
Summary: Xichen wasn’t even sure Wangji was open to finding his soulmate. The mechanism of soulmate matching was inexact and open to misinterpretation. It was very frustrating. Wangji had always preferred certainty. Kay's comments: A cute little outsider POV story where we follow Lan Xichen watching over his brother as he first meets his soulmate. I really enjoyed how soul marks work in this story, very creative! And I'm always weak for some good outsider POV. Excerpt: A group of visiting students from Yunmeng Jiang wandered by on their way to the first class of the day. Despite their hushed voices, they were a noisy bunch, especially in contrast to the silent groups of Lan students who sedately made their way to the classrooms. “Lan-er-gongzi,” one of the boys in the Jiang group shouted. Xichen recognized Wei Wuxian, Sect Leader Jiang’s ward. Wangji turned his head away. “Hey, it’s me,” Wei Wuxian continued. “I’m not late! Aren’t you proud of me?” Xichen felt as if he had missed something. Wei Wuxian had arrived yesterday with the rest of the Jiang contingent. As lively as he was, he had certainly made an impression during the welcome reception, but Wangji had not been present for it. However, there had been a misunderstanding at the gate when they arrived, and Wangji had returned at that time…
pov outsider, pov lan xichen, canon divergence, soulmate-identifying marks, soulmates, supportive lan xichen, good sibling lan xichen, lan xichen/nie mingjue, nielan, fluff, first meetings, getting together

I sincerely doubt teen Wangji was ever sighing and swooning to Lan Xichen about his hopeless little crush. It's more likely he was, "😡 Xiongzhang, play cleansing on me. Or at least give me a concussion resulting in amnesia."
And Xichen was like, "Wangji, it's five past nine. Go the fuck to bed!"

happy international hot and spicy food day to wei wuxian
Tumblr media
(Image Description: The cover art for the extra episode Glutinous Rice Congee from the Chinese MDZS audio drama drawn in a cute simplistic comic style. There are two rows of tables with characters sat at it with Wei Wuxian in the bottom left hand corner. The character in the back row to the left is Lan Qiren. He is red in the face covering his mouth with red liquid around his fingers and his hand is slamming against the table holding a sign that reads zero in Hanzi (零). Lan Wangji is next to him in the back row in the middle. He is sipping on a bowl with a small amount of red liquid dripping over the top of the bowl, his eats are red and a bead of sweat is on his right cheek. He is gripping a sign that has the Hanzi for ten (拾). In the table in front of him has a plack with his name written on it like he's a judge in a contest. Next to him in the back row on the right end of the table is Jiang Cheng. He is looking at Lan Wangji to his left with a look of disbelief and much judgement (typical jc behaviour). He's holding a sign that says the Hanzi for the number three (叁). In the front row to the left is Lan Jingyi. His tongue is out and he is red in the face and on his ears. He is looking very worriedly at Lan Qiren. On the table in front of him is a bowl of red glutinous rice congee with a soup in the bowl and a little of the liquid has spilled onto the table. He has a name plack in front of him too and he's holding a sign that has the number one in Hanzi (壹) on it. Lan Sizhui is sat next to him in the front row to the right. He has a slight blush on his cheeks and ears. His mouth is open in an O shape and he's looking at Lan Qiren. On the table in front of him is a bowl of the glutinous rice congee and he has a name plack. He's holding a sign in his left hand with the number eight in Hanzi (捌) on it. Wei Wuxian is in the bottom left hand corner smiling with his eyes closed holding a big steaming pot of glutinous rice congee with cloth to act as oven gloves. Rising from the pot is a mist of red and little stars. He has a slight blush to his cheeks and he's wearing a pink-ish white bandana on his head. There is a little heart to the right of him <3)

Can you tell me why you like Lan Xichen, if that doesn't bother you?
I know why the fandom at large like him, but I disagree very hard with the "N°1 Wangxian shipper, best wingman, the only person in this cast that has eyes" thing they've got going on because all of this is directly contradicted by canon, and I'm just not a fan of blissfully ignorant characters that are fine with staying blind to the faults of others depending on how convenient it is for them.
I may be exaggerating a bit, but his "You were his only mistake" speech while advocating and protecting and giving the benefit of the doubt to Jin Guangyao made me a little bit salty, and the implications as to how he participated/supported the siege and Lan Wangji's punishment didn't really help.
I usually enjoy your takes and often agree with you, so I figured I'd ask, maybe you'd provide some insight in his character that I missed?
Hello anon,
I think part of this does simply come down to personally what type of person I myself am able to tolerate and want to see the potential of capability and being better. I do agree on with Wei Wuxian as he observes Lan Xichen's faith in Jin Guangyao, is that he unlike him was able to interact with memories of Nie Mingjue and the only reason he himself was able to believe that Jin Guangyao wasn't what he presented as. Lan Xichen isn't presented as a character to despise even in his ignorance which yes, is a factor of his one comfortable position, yet he is a kind simple man.
Simple kind men, are not meant to be politicians and should not be as they are easily manipulated. Yet the people that Wei Wuxian commends and listens to are simple, kind people. He understands very well where Lan Xichen himself comes from as a party close to Jin Guangyao and as an outside party to Wei Wuxian. They don't know each other, Wei Wuxian also is not a grudge holding person for slights against himself because they are wrong. Why would he himself care for what is not true? He knows who and what he is, whether it's liked by outsiders or not. He knows how to work with either reaction and is not sensitive to what is said about him, he also doesn't need others to take up that mantel in his stead, what he appreciates is those that trust in him as he is to support that.
Wei Wuxian also understands the casual misunderstandings perpetuated, some of which he did continue once he came back and hid for a time as Mo Xuanyu. He didn't think his unconscious love from when he was you g would reawaken, he WAS fucking around to disgust Lan Wangji to abandon him. He did not expect Lan Wangji to be caring and as loving as he was because the man hadn't so openly been anything like that in their youth.
Lan Xichen had the privilege of knowing this about Lan Wangji, hence his protectiveness and assumptions. While Wei Wuxian did not. It's a case of great misunderstanding on part of what Lan Xichen knew against what Wei Wuxian knows. As the audience we DO have a greater privilege than either of them because we get insights into both's actions and thoughts the other has no idea of. They are outside observers of the other.
Do I think Lan Xichen held a grudge towards Wei Wuxian either? No, but he was weary of Wei Wuxian's intentions to his brother given the outside view he had of them. Subconsciously yes we see that Wei Wuxian greatly loves Lan Wangji, but that is not apparent for Lan Xichen given the history he had seen. He had at one point thought a friendship with Wei Wuxian would be good for Lan Wangji who didn't ever seek companions, yet the only thing he was seeing and told was the hurt and struggle Lan Wangji struggled with. He had no investment or friendship with Wei Wuxian to think of other context.
Wei Wuxian also gets this, it is why he is terrified of the potential hurt Lan Wangji had been put through unintentionally because of himself and the assumptions of outsiders as well that influenced both of their hesitance to be open of their growing feelings, trust and love.
We all want to think of the best in those close to us. Wei Wuxian understands how that becomes so natural to the point of blinding yourself to the worst. It is what he did when it came to Jiang Cheng who continued to escalate his hate and actions towards Wei Wuxian who gave Jiang Cheng the benefit of doubt until he no longer could. And it is what Lan Xichen is faced with when it comes to the whole of Jin Guangyao's crimes exposed. Wei Wuxian was the perpetual stain and hurt for Jiang Cheng and did take the blame Jiang Cheng put upon him while reasoning with himself that Jiang Cheng had such a right and what good would it do for him to complain.
Lan Xichen trapped himself in the blindness of wanting Jin Guangyao to be reasonable in his choices in a very unfair world that condemned his class. He did know that Lan Wangji loved Wei Wuxian, he was weary of that love due to not knowing the whole. And why at the end he is disgusted, horrified, hurt in his own self snd yes embarrassed with his stubborn assumptions and blindness. He is not proud of that and what he is torn up over at the end. It's not the great tragic friendship he supposedly lost, it is his own stubbornness and ignorance he let overcome him and what he allowed to go on for too long. He is forced to see his one sided idea of Wei Wuxian was wrong, he has no hate over that, he to a point had seen Wei Wuxian as an influence for Lan Wangji to open up, yet lost his own faith in that due to his assumed biases.
He to a fault is coddling to the point of it being offensively infantilizing to Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian understands the why of this and also is completely logical in understanding as to why Lan Xixchen thinks as such. He thinks Lan Xichen is a good man, because he is, whether we the audience like it or not in the logic of their world Wei Wuxian understands the mechanism of Lan Wangji's punishment as well and the cruelty it was for the society they are stuck in that is slow to change. Simple kind men are not made to be in a world of intricacy and conspiracy because it is more complicated than they know. Good intentions and offer of protection is dangerous when you have not been exposed to cruelty that can personally hurt you and take advantage of you when you are ignorant to the extent of the backlash.
I think this is also why Wei Wuxian in the end does respect Lan Xichen he had been there as well. He can't condemn something that he had been a part of at one point and had been taken advantage himself by multiple others.

What’s your favorite of the 3zun ships or do you like them all equally? My favorite is nieyao but xiyao and nielan tie for a close second.
I absolutely LOVE 3zun, but I muct confess that if I have to choose, nieyao is my fave too ^^;. I just think that those two have one hella juicy and complicated dynamic on their own that is very fascinating to explore independently.
That being said, between xiyao and nielan, I’m more into xiyao bc jiggy is my special little boi and xiayo is so rich and pretty much canon.
However, for some reason, nielan is the one ship that gives the more fussy feelings, probably bc I mostly have this image of childhood friends to teen crushes, and I just think it’s adorable to think of NMJ and LXC being each other’s first crush and first kiss and all that stuff ;u;
But again, these ships are not apart by a big margin, I just love these 3 in any sort of combination bc their entire deal is Too Good and Complex :’D

Having finished yet another rewatch of The Untamed, I am once again consumed by the Xiyao madness.
Tumblr media
Meng Yao is coocoo for Cocoa Puffs. We know this. Throughout the story we watch him devolve into madness as he gets revenge on the whole world for his lifetime of abuse. He feels like he’s owed power and respect in return for his trauma. He starts off being absolutely devoted to Nie Mingjue. He goes above and beyond, does everything that’s asked of him and more, puts up with the rest of the Nie clan abusing him, because he wants Mingjue’s respect so badly. He gets run through with a sword to save Mingjue’s life. And he still gets thrown out of the Nie clan even though he was willing to sacrifice his life for it.
Now, as we later find out, he did in fact murder the Chief General in cold blood. He expects to get away with it because of how much he’s sacrificed for Mingjue. He expects mercy in return. But he doesn’t get it. He tries to prove himself (again) by risking his life (again) as a double agent during the Sunshot Campaign. That’s not enough for Mingjue either. So Meng Yao goes over to the Jin clan. He’s the perfect son, basically runs the clan for his father. And he’s still treated like a servant. He’s not even allowed to hold his baby nephew. This is when he goes fully bonkers and starts having people murdered left and right.
And then – Guanyin temple. Lan Xichen is tricked into stabbing him. The temple is collapsing around them. Meng Yao knows this is the end. And he says to Xichen, “Die with me.”
Now, I think this was Meng Yao being his usual manipulative self. He wanted Xichen to have to live with the guilt when he abandoned Meng Yao to his fate, like everyone else has always done. But Xichen does it. He stays. And at that moment Meng Yao realizes that Xichen really loves him. Loves him enough to die with him.
So Meng Yao does what might be the only genuinely selfless thing he’s ever done: He saves Xichen’s life. And he accepts his own death, having finally gotten the only thing he’s ever really wanted. In the end, Xichen’s love saves them both.

I see a lot of autistic Lan Wangji posts, which is great, but I don't see any posts on how the two people closest to him (Wei Wuxian and Lan Xichen) accommodate him. So here it is!
(Please keep in mind that this is based on my own experiences of growing up autistic, having less than a handful of close autistic friends and doing a tiny bit of research. I'm far from an expert, so I apologise in advance if I said anything that doesn't gel well with other MDZS fans on the spectrum.)
-----
Lan Xichen:
- Is a literal saint in part because of his brother, because showing frustration at every little thing Lan Wangji did didn't help either of them (especially since he had a lot more difficulty understanding why Lan Xichen was always angry when they were little). However, he made a note not to enable certain behaviours when Lan Wangji actually did something wrong and will gently let Lan Wangji know when his patience is being pushed.
- Lan Wangji learned to follow rules religiously from Lan Qiren, but Lan Xichen was always there to encourage him to bend them a little bit when need be (within his comfort level of course).
- This leads me to my next point of Lan Xichen generally just being there to act as a wingman to Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian, not only because there was someone who was so invested in befriending him (a rarity because of his reputation and seemingly aloof persona) but also to encourage the above. Plus it was endearing to see that eventually turn into his brother's first crush.
- Lan Xichen was always there to translate what Lan Wangji wanted to say (especially because of his tendency to respond in three words or less), as well as politely excuse him to a safe space whenever Lan Wangji was getting overwhelmed at social gatherings. He'd also be the one to ask as soon as they arrive (always a full hour before the social gathering starts) if there's a quiet room they can go to.
- I'm aware this is something a parent should have to deal with, rather than a sibling who's only 1-3 years older, but Lan Xichen knew from a young age that their actual parental figures weren't able to care for Lan Wangji the way he needed, because one was too busy and generally had little patience (Lan Qiren) and the other was just not around to help (their actual dad). However, he's also learned to manage his frustration in healthy ways when it started to get too much for him.
- Lan Xichen picked up a lot from how their mother treated Lan Wangji before she passed away, so continuing to behave like her is his way of honouring her memory and to provide comfort to Lan Wangji.
- Lan Xichen made sure Lan Wangji knew how to take care of himself, because he knew he would become sect leader once he was 20 (I'm assuming that's how it would have gone if their dad didn't pass away sooner?) and would be too busy to always be there for him. So when he does become sect leader at 17-19, he did so knowing Lan Wangji would be fine without him.
- While I'm on the topic, I really didn't like Lan Zhan leaving Lan Xichen alone after Jin Guangyao's death, so I headcanon that he and Wei Wuxian do immediately leave the Cloud Recesses (since Wei Wuxian is incapable of following their rules), but live close by enough for a few years so that Lan Wangji can visit his brother every few days. This is Lan Wangji's way of caring for his brother after everything Lan Xichen has done for him. (Also, I like to imagine he and Wei Wuxian find an abandoned house at the edge of the woods, and rumours eventually start of screaming and moaning coming from it at around the same time every day lol)
-----
Wei Wuxian:
- Wei Wuxian was a newcomer in Lan Wangji's life and didn't have the same experience as Lan Xichen, so he behaved in his usual hyperactive self around Lan Wangji. However, after seeing Lan Wangji have a shutdown for the first time during their month of isolation (something that may have been caused by WWX), he had the insight to give him space at that moment.
- The second shutdown was when they were in the cave, when Lan Wangji suddenly became so overwhelmed by having to mask through recent events (the burning of Cloud Recesses, his father essentially being in a coma and Lan Xichen missing). Wei Wuxian learned from his previous experience to give him space. However, Lan Wangji was comfortable enough around him at this point to let him hug him, so that's what Wei Wuxian did. That was also the first time Lan Wangji cried around anyone that wasn't his brother and uncle.
- The rest of the novel's events pretty much play out the same up to them meeting again after Wei Wuxian's resurrection. It's from then on that Wei Wuxian gets to really know Lan Wangji. I won't get into specifics because there are a ton of really great autistic LWJ readings and headcanons out there and this post is long enough already, but I personally have one of Lan Wangji clenching his clothes (around his hips specifically) to signal when he's overstimulated. Eventually, he adds gently squeezing Wei Wuxian's hand as a signal once they get together.
- Wei Wuxian has ADHD, so while he isn't able to fully understand Lan Wangji's autism, he at least can relate to having hyperfixations, the need for stimming, and so on.
- Wei Wuxian's constant chatter has become something of a comfort to Lan Wangji, as it reminds him of better times and also that Wei Wuxian is back and with him.
Edit: Mistook shutdowns for meltdowns, so I corrected it. Since it doesn't tie into his relationships as much, I personally headcanon LWJ as being more prone to shutdowns than meltdowns, regardless of who he's around. However, I imagine he did have meltdowns a handful of times when he was very little.

I think SMS is another example of how the current system that runs the cultivation world at large (family based) is kind of shitty. We see with him that if you aren’t apart of the main family, you’re considered expendable. That’s not to say there aren’t any issues with being within the main family but being an outer disciple is not a secure position. He’s probably yet another mirror of WWX, but he’s no where near as favored as WWX was.
yep, hard agree. i'd also say that cql!sms is evidence of just how secure an outer disciple without kinship ties to the main family is when they choose to join one of the major clans. he was clearly loyal and dedicated to the gusu lan, but that was not enough to earn him the loyalty and favour that the inner disciples received. his security was entirely dependent on the broader political landscape, and as soon as that became volatile and unpredictable, well. 🤷‍♀️

I cannot decide whether make the Lans be eighth or sixth. I feel like sixth is the best match overall but their fun hating is essential because their biggest contribution to the plot is Lan Wangji.

Highly Specific Ship Ranking : Lan Xichen/Xue Yang (giving you one of my crack ships because I wanna know your thoughts)
Talk about coming out of Left Field :D
Squick / Just nope / A trainwreck you can’t look away from / Mehh but they are bloody everywhere / Not interested but no negative feelings / I need to see how I could make it work / BroTP / Cute / I love them / They rented a room in my mind and are here to stay / ***I have literally never considered them until you suggested them but it intrigues me***
So, how would these two work? We know XY gravitates toward kind, non-judgemental men (e.g. XXC) and LXC definitely suits that bill. And LXC has been known to overlook darker aspects of people he cares about. Perhaps an AU in the CQL-verse where after CR is attacked and LXC is on the run, instead of JGY he runs into XY without knowing who he is. XY thinks its amusing how easily he can earn LXC's trust and he goes along with him, waiting to see if there will be a moment that he's tempted to turn him into WRH... but then he starts to develop feelings, damn it, and LXC is just so damned grateful for XY's kindness, and by the end of the war, LXC comes out with his own personal attack dog who will fuck up anyone who looks at him wrong :D So yeah, I suppose it has potential!

because this just happened to me, here's some idol wwx and fan lwj
-
Lan Wangji was excited today while working. His good mood was obvious even to his secretary, his brother passing through now and then by his office's open door with a curious sparkle in his eyes.
All this because of a picture.
His favorite idol (and his first and only love since high school) posted a picture earlier in the subscription only app for fans where his hair was bleached blonde saying it had been a while since he dyed his hair.
Wei Ying with dyed hair was always hot so handsome. Lan Wangji still has his pink era as his wallet photo. He can't wait!
His excitement went through the whole day and he even did half of his work for tomorrow. Soon enough he was getting into his car, taking out his phone and opening the fan app again, heart beating so loud and fast inside his chest. His dick twitching inside his pants.
There was nothing new there, so Lan Wangji went to his secret social media where he was only another Wei Wuxian fan, refreshing the timeline and scrolling through other fans posts and fansites.
Oh, him and his group just arrived for a recording and–
Ah.
Well.
Wei Ying's hair looked almost exactly the same. Why did he bleached his hair, though? Is that dark brown? Looks black.
With a deep, disappointed sigh, Lan Wangji pocketed his phone and started his car, ready to go back home.
Just another day being a Wei Wuxian fan.

Summary: As A-Song recovers, the issue of Meng Yao in Lanling is addressed. Nie Mingjue has a proposition. Meng Yao agrees.
Characters: Meng Yao, Nie Mingjue, Nie Huaisang, Jin Zixuan, Lan Xichen
Rating: E (sexual content)
Alright, at last the final chapter of the current plot! Now there’s only a small epilogue to go :D
Unfortunately (or not idk lol), this chapter ended up being much bigger than the previous ones bc I apparently can’t make nieyao have less feelings. Also, this contains baby’s first attempt at nsfw, nothing too graphic, but pls mind the tags.
