Summary: Wen Qing is fairly confident in her own skills. She knows the theory—wrote the theory—and has performed many surgeries before, has worked with broken cores and devoted her life to the study of it. But there’s something different about this. - Or, the one where the Golden Core transfer goes...sideways. Kay's comments: This story explores an idea that I find super interesting, what if the Golden Core Transfer just didn't work? The odds weren't in their favour after all and here it just doesn't work, Wei Wuxian's core says nope and returns to Wei Wuxian, no matter what Wen Qing attempts. It changes things and for the better, at least for Wei Wuxian and the Wens and I love that and love their relationship especially. You know I'm so weak for Wei-Wen found family vibes. Ah, and now I'm sad again that justdoityoufucker left the fandom. I adore their fics so much. Excerpt: Except, a half shichen later, it disappears. It disappears. The core disappears out of Jiang Wanyin’s body. It’s an instantaneous happening—one second it’s there, channeling the remnants of Jiang Wanyin’s spiritual energy along with Wei Wuxian’s, and then there’s an abrupt, gaping emptiness that is familiar only because it’s how his dantian felt before the transfer. “J-jie?” a-Ning asks at the same moment that Wei Wuxian makes a rough noise of abject confusion, an emotion that is mirrored on her didi’s face. “What’s h-happening?” She forces some of her spiritual energy to remain in Jiang Wanyin’s meridians, cycling to ensure nothing goes wrong, and rushes over to Wei Wuxian, who has suddenly regained some color in his face. It’s hard to focus on splitting her energy, cycling it in two other bodies, but immediately she can tell what’s wrong. Wei Wuxian’s golden core is back in Wei Wuxian, like she never took it out. His meridians are perfectly reconnected, spiritual energy cycling as if it had never been stripped out.
pov wen qing, pov wei wuxian, canon divergence, no golden core transfer, jiang cheng has no golden core, not jiang cheng friendly, pre-sunshot campaign, sunshot campaign, post-sunshot campaign, wei wuxian lives, wen remnants live, families of choice, hurt/comfort, rogue cultivator wei wuxian, angst with a happy ending, everybody lives, wei wuxian leaves the yunmeng jiang sect

Wei Wuxian is killed in Path Qionqi's ambush and Lan Wangji decides to marry Wen Qing and pass off A-Yuan as his son to protect the remaining Wen.
There were too many of them. And Wei Wuxian knew this was where he would meet his end. But that doesn't mean he would go without a fight. But first things first, he had to get Wen Ning back to a conscious state and send him off to Wen Qing with the Seal to protect them. Now that it had come to this, Wei Wuxian thought back briefly.
Perhaps this situation could have been avoided if he had been careful about breaking out the Wens. If he had been covert and not made a big spectacle out of this, perhaps things would have been different.
It was too late for regrets now.
He tossed the suppression talismans on Wen Ning and called out to him. Told him to use his arrays to protect the Wens long enough so that they could escape somewhere. Perhaps they could blend in with the townsfolk if they changed their clothes. The elders could, at least. Wen Qing and Wen Ning, on the other hand, would have to run far, far away, if they could.
Wei Wuxian didn't know. He had no time.
With one last command to Wen Ning, forcing him to flee, Wei Wuxian snapped the two halves of the Seal together. He planned to destroy the damned thing along with everyone here.
As he poured every last bit of energy he had into the Seal and felt himself get sucked into the ensuing explosion, his last thought was........ that now, finally, he could rest.
..................................................
The news broke out soon enough. Jin Zixuan limped back into his son's one month celebration and announced what had happened. His stupid cousin Jin Zixun had ambushed Wei Wuxian with members of both Lan and Jin and forced him to use the Seal to protect himself. No one except Jin Zixuan, who had arrived too late, was only able to witness the explosion and death of everyone there.
Jiang Yanli cried out in despair, pleading Jin Zixuan that it wasn't true, that her A' Xian, her brother couldn't be dead. Jin Zixuan didn't know how to comfort her, but merely replied that he saw his broken body among the many others littering Qiongqi Path.
When asked about the Seal, Jin Zixuan shook his head, it had completely crumbled to dust. The many greedy faces of the sect leaders looked dismayed, including Jin Guangshan.
In the corner, Lan Wangji stumbled back, whispering a heartbroken "no" and simply left the place. But no one paid attention, all they could think about was the defenseless Wens.
...................................................
No. No, no, no, no.
Lan Wangji begged any god that ever existed. This couldn't happen. This didn't happen. Wei Ying wasn't dead. It was a joke. A cruel joke that Jin Zixuan said, right? Wei Ying and Jin Zixuan never got along, so of course it would be like that.
Lan Wangji didn't lose his chance. Wei Ying was alive. He was alive. He had to be alive.
Cause if he wasn't.....
He landed at Qiongqi Path.
If he wasn't.......
He desperately searched the desolated place, ignoring the implications of the many Lan members with weapons in their hands.
If he wasn't---
He collapsed beside a broken, torn body. Chenqing was in pieces by her master's side. Lan Wangji lifted up a trembling hand to the vacant silver eyes, perhaps the only intact thing on his face.
The cry that left him was silent and desolate.
What was Lan Wangji supposed to do? How could he go on? How could he.....when it was his fault, his letter that led Wei Ying to this place. To his death.
.
.
.
Numb to everything, he lifted Wei Ying's body up, tucking him safely by his side, ignoring the blood staining his clothes. He had to get to the Burial Mounds.
........................................
Wen Ning wanted to cry. He wanted to sob, to rage, to tear them all to shreds. Wei-gongzi died. He died, alone and hurting and there was nothing Wen Ning could do about it. He couldn't even go back to get his body. Because what if A' Jie and the others were attacked while he was away? He couldn't risk that. Not when--Not when Wei-gongzi gave his life for them.
But what could they do? They could, perhaps look for a place for the elders to settle down somewhere, but he and A' Jie were too well-known. They had to leave far, far away. But where could they run to? And....how far? Would there ever be a day when they could be safe?
Wen Ning didn't know.
.
.
But he didn't have to know.
Hanguang-Jun soon arrived with Wei-gongzi's body. But....something was wrong. Hanguang-Jun’s expression....it looked.......dead, somehow. It looked wrong.
“Hanguang-Jun, thank you for bringing him back.” A’ Jie said, her voice trembling. “But, why....why are you here?”
Wen Ning suddenly remembered the various Lan disciples that had attacked them and tensed. Lan Wangji had been amicable to them in their previous encounters but who could say that his mind was changed, considering how many Lan disciples were killed.
“I....I had a plan.” He whispered, to no one in particular. “I had a plan. I could hide you in a town near Caiyi and bring A’ Yuan in as an war orphan. Then, bring Wei Ying to Gusu under the guise of healing him and bringing him back to the sword path. We could lock the Seal away and find a way for Wei Ying to live peacefully. But.....”
Wen Ning acted quickly and caught Hanguang-Jun as he seemed to collapse in on himself.
“Why.....Why did this happen? I just....I just wanted him to see his sister. He was so....so sad the last time I was here. I just wanted to see him smile. Why? Why?”
Wen Ning yelped even though he felt no pain. Lan Wangji’s spiritual energy seemed to spiral out of control at that moment.
“This is-- Damn it, he’s going into a qi deviation!” Wen Qing panicked. “A’ Ning, get my needles! I need to knock him out before it’s too late!”
“Y-Yes!” He quickly scrambled away and got her medical supplies.
Without hesitation, she transferred spiritual energy into her needles and knocked Lan Wangji out. She pulled Wei Wuxian’s body away and couldn’t help the tears that fell down her face at his condition.
She turned her attention away and used it to calm Lan Wangji’s energy down. They didn’t need another death on their hands.
.
.
.
.
..........................................
Lan Wangji woke up.
Why did he wake up? Why should he be in a world where Wei Ying is no longer there? What is even the point? He was too late. Always so late.
He shouldn’t have been so scared of rejection, of his own feelings, of Wei Ying’s response. He should have just gone for it, confessed, perhaps even courted the other until he fell for him. But he didn’t do any of that.
Like a coward, he said nothing. He didn’t convey his feelings, he never corrected Wei Ying about his supposed “hatred” towards him, he never did anything.
He couldn’t do anything right.
Why was he still here?
Why--
“Rich-gege?”
Lan Wangji got up with a start, “A’ Yuan?”
“Mm.” A’ Yuan nodded. “Rich-gege, you’re back! Xian-gege said you wouldn’t come, but he was wrong! Hehe. Are you staying for dinner this time?”
Lan Wangji’s lips trembled. He should have stayed for dinner that night. He should have stayed forever that day. If he had, would Wei Ying still be alive? Or...if he had showed his support more outwardly, had given him food, water, even crops to give him strength, would things be different?
So many what ifs come to mind and what did Lan Wangji do?
Nothing. He bought a toy - not that A’ Yuan didn’t deserve it - and a meal and thought that was enough. Thought that nothing would go wrong.
Oh, what a fool he was.
“Rich-gege, why are you crying? What it something A’ Yuan said?”
Lan Wangji shook his head and bent down to hug the boy. “It’s nothing. I...just need a hug.”
“Okay! I’m good at hugs. Xian-gege told me so!”
Lan Wangji took a shaky breath at the mention as he hugged the boy.
Because Wei Ying was no longer here.
..................................
They buried him in the spare ragged blankets they had and put whatever flowers they could around his grave. Lan Wangji wanted to take Wei Ying’s body to Gusu, but he didn’t know what his uncle or others like him would do should they discover Wei Ying’s grave. He couldn’t risk it.
They decided to settle the elders in the abandoned village near Caiyi and decided to “show proof” that Wen Ning was put down. In actuality, he would be a guard for the Wen village, though they would do their best to disguise him as a human.
Wen Qing and Wen Yuan on the other hand, were tough decisions. They could leave A’ Yuan in the village, but the elders were all on their last legs and weakened from their time in the Burial Mounds. They couldn’t really take care of A’ Yuan. And even if Wen Qing were to disguise herself and run away, it was only a matter of time before she was caught considering her well-known medical skills. The Wen elders too. Even if they were old, if they happened to be recognized, there was little Lan Wangji could do to prevent the Wens from being murdered without implicating his clan.
“You could....” Wen Qing gritted her teeth. “You could...marry me. Pass of A’ Yuan as our child.”
Lan Wangji stopped breathing for a moment. “.........What?”
“Look, I don’t like it either, but this could be the only way to grant us immunity. Besides, I remember one of A’ Yuan’s parents being from the Lan clan, at least a distant relative of one. Some of his features resemble you, so it could work.”
“I....” Lan Wangji was conflicted. He had never wanted to marry anyone but Wei Ying, but if this method helped protect the people Wei Ying gave his life for, then.... “Okay.”
..............................................
It didn’t go down well with the elders. The demanded seclusion and the discipline whip for his slight, but Lan Xichen and Lan Qiren managed to calm them down, opting to give him a couple hundred strikes with the discipline ruler, three strikes instead of the thirty originally suggested with the whip, and seclusion for a few years, at least until the storm of rumors died down.
In the end, the Wens were protected and were able to live out their last years peacefully. Wen Ning migrated away from the sects after their deaths, occasionally popping by Gusu to see A’ Yuan grow up. Wen Qing contributed to the Lan sect with her skills and the originally wary Lans, warmed up to her, though not too much. Lan Wangji recovered from his punishment quickly with Wen Qing’s help though he was still stuck in seclusion.
A’ Yuan grew up to be Lan Sizhui, a calm and gentle person who occasionally showed a mischievous side. And Lan Wangji.....well, he never quite recovered from Wei Wuxian’s death, but found companionship in Wen Qing, who shared stories about Wei Wuxian with Lan Wangji.
Everything seemed fine, until Nie Mingjue’s violent death and the resurgence of demonic cultivation.
.
.
.
In a shed near the Mo residence, a bloody array shimmered. The body in the center of it woke up, disoriented.
“Wasn’t I dead?”
________________________________
Sooooo, wasn’t sure whether you wanted more details out of the repercussions of Lan Wangji taking in the Wens, but I did my best, haha.
Hope you enjoyed it!

Wei Wuxian 🤝 Luo Qingyang: deciding this was not the cultivation sect that they signed up for, and discarding a symbol of their former sect in front of their former sect leader to solidify the separation between themselves and the corrupt cultivation world

unlike in wwx’s first life where lwj was torn between clan expectations and wholeheartedly supporting wwx -> ??? yeah... 'cause someone openly speaking up, casually meeting for a lunch date, and fighting his clan for the cultivation world's enemy #1 must be SO concerned with the clan expectations. i swear to god i don't get what some wx stans want from lwj to be seen worthy. attacking 33 lan grandpas in advance? killing all the great sect leaders? getting rid of his bro, taking his place, marrying wq, and adopting her people into the clan? (the last one might've actually worked, just saying)
I’m like 90% certain this is bait, but I’ll answer anyways. Yes I’m one of the people who believes that Lan Wangji was hesitant to fully side with Wei Wuxian in the latter’s first life until it was much too late, which is what makes his actions in the latter’s second life stand out so starkly. However, I’m not sure what unambiguously siding with wwx in his first life would have even accomplished outside of him still being punished by his clan (except his actions would be public knowledge rather than the Lan being able to hide it) or him dying like everyone else. The Lan wouldn’t side with their Hanguang-jun when they were in the midst of Jin Guangyao being revealed as the culprit and their own shameful actions were being exposed to their children; why would they side with him during a time when he didn’t have the proof to exonerate wwx?
Anyways, that last little bit you added in which makes me think this is bait is a terrible plan that absolutely never would have happened and never would have worked anyways. Lwj is never gonna get rid of his brother, the Lan do not just happily let lwj do whatever he wants, especially since they also hate the Wen, and the other clans would most definitely not let that fly. Idk why some people are obsessed with heterosexuality being the solution to the novel’s conflicts lmao

I don't think this particularly means anything, but I did just realize that the "four great sects" setups in MDZS and Tai Sui are kind of similar.
Both present a world that used to have five great sects until war erupted between the fifth and at least one of its counterparts. This war leads to the fifth sect's absolute destruction.
Then, in the aftermath of the war, the former fifth sect's resources are split amongst the remaining four sects, and the people once associated with it become pariahs. Those once part of the fifth sect are made to live somewhere otherwise unlivable, and they are generally treated as less than human for it.

in awe of the donghua for slapping "Jiang Cheng had to give up his dogs as a child so that Wei Wuxian could live with him in Lotus Pier" into the same episode as "Wei Wuxian refuses to give up the Wen dogs Clan Remnants so that he can live with Jiang Cheng in Lotus Pier".
Really hammering that nail home about how Jiang Cheng has repeatedly given up everything he reasonably can for Wei Wuxian, and how Wei Wuxian (with one major exception) simply does not do the same. Wei Wuxian does whatever he thinks is right, and does not evaluate the collateral damage of those choices.
His major exception, his one major sacrifice that's done explicitly for Jiang Cheng, is something that he grapples with for the entire rest of the story and which Jiang Cheng is barred from knowledge of until the end, preventing Jiang Cheng from being able to feel that there's been any kind of reciprocity between them. From his perspective, he has given and given and given while Wei Wuxian has simply done whatever the fuck he wants forever, and the second that interfered with the Jiang Clan he... simply left the Jiang Clan. From his perspective, actively prevented from knowledge that would prove him wrong (which he WANTS, by the way, he WANTS to be wrong), Wei Wuxian has taken and taken and taken, and then fucking left.
Anyway they're both right and they're both wrong and I love their messy complicated relationship and the donghua's choice to put these two scenes back to back was HUGE brained

//long rambles ahead!
I think what really lingers with me about MDZS is that it's not a novel with a cathartic ending at all. It's a bittersweet story that leaves you slightly hollow. Yes, it's a beautiful and epic romance. It's a piece of social commentary interwoven with a love story and murder mystery. It's a cautionary tale. But it is also very much a tragedy. It's a story about being too late, second chances, and moving on.
By the time the truth of everything JGY and JGS did comes to light, it's 13 years too late. Everything that mattered has already happened. Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan are long dead. Jin Ling is still an orphan. Wen Ning is dead, and sometime in the future, his death will be permanent. Wen Qing was burned to death at the stake for no fault of her own. Nie Mingjue has already spent ten years in a no-doubt agonizing state of un-death, and Lan Xichen will have to bear the guilt of loving both Nie Mingjue and Jin Guangyao, and by doing so, forsaking them both. Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng's once-close bond is irrevocably broken, and the woman who sowed the seeds of resentment when they were still children will never face the consequences of her vitriol.
People sometimes say MXTX was too hard on the side characters, and only gave the Wangxian a happy ending, but what stuck with me after finishing the story is how… sad things are. Yes, Wangxian finally get the happy ending they've deserved for nearly 20 years - but at the same time, it's not a happy ending where the people who've wronged them get the consequences they deserve.
Wei Wuxian will spend the rest of his life haunted by guilt and loss, over what happened to Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan, over the loss of the Wen remnants. The rest of his years won't even be lived in the body his parents gave him.
Lan Wangji will spend the rest of his years wondering if he'd chosen to stand with Wei Wuxian when it mattered - would his son have had to grow up without his birth family?
Nie Huaisang is left wondering if his brother had been a little less trusting and had never taken Meng Yao in as a Nie deputy, would his brother have died a less wretched death? Would he have been forced to stoop to ruthless machinations and manipulations to seek some semblance of justice?
Wen Ning will have to live with the knowledge that if he'd been a little less kind, if he'd let Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng die that fateful day - his family would still be alive. The Wens would've won the war; Wen Qing might've even succeeded Wen Ruohan.
No one really gets the ending they deserve. MDZS isn't a story where good people get happy endings, and bad people get their dues. Sure, Jin Guangyao's crimes are revealed and he faces the consequences of his actions. But what about the people who stood by and made him into a monster? If anything, the side characters and antagonists who survive get better than they deserve. The real villain of MDZS - society - will never face retribution. Those cultivators who always believed in their own bigotry and righteousness over and over again, will never face justice.
Do you think those cultivators and the public will ever feel any regret for the innocent people they condemned to death in their own prejudice and blind self-righteousness? Do you think the people who gathered at Nightless City to call for Wei Wuxian's death considered for one second that he was the biggest reason they won the war? When the cultivators who sacked the Wen settlement at the Burial Mounds threw the bodies of the Wens into the blood pool, do you think that was a sign of shame?
Do you think Jiang Cheng will ever regret leading a siege on a small settlement of innocent farmers? Do you think he's haunted by condemning to death the same people whom he owes his life to?
Do you think those people like Yao-zongzhu will ever feel an ounce of remorse for so easily believing rumours and hearsay, and spreading speculation and vitriol about innocent people?
Do you think that unnamed cultivator out there will ever lose a single minute of sleep over smashing in Wen Popo's head?
In the years that follow, Wen Ning will have apologized a hundred times for lives he did not take, crimes he did not commit, because of the name he bears. People, both in-universe, and even readers, will condemn him for actions he could not help, for doing the right thing. But did Jiang Cheng ever apologize for killing his family? Did the Jins ever apologize for their horrific treatment of people in the labour camps?
People will continue to demand that Wei Wuxian apologize for causing the deaths of their friends and family. But how is Wei Wuxian meant to do that? No one ever apologized to him for taking his family away. No one ever apologized for condemning the Wen Remnants to death for crimes they took no part in. The Wens were his family too.
There's so much potential for bitterness and corruption in MDZS. Instead of saving everyone, Wei Wuxian could've stood aside and let the people who tried to kill him die. MDZS could've been a story of succumbing to hatred and grief, but it wasn't. MXTX could've gone on and on about how society wronged the protagonist, but she didn't. The narrative is one of forgiveness and moving beyond past grievances. The story chose to close the story on a positive note. I truly love that aspect of MDZS, where MXTX leaves just enough room for hope and love at the end.
A-Yuan will finally get his closure about the family he lost as a toddler. Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian get their happy ending together after being separated by nearly two decades by war, miscommunication, cruelty, and death.
Wei Wuxian will never regret protecting survivors of an attempted genocide, because it was the right thing to do.
And Wen Ning will still stand in the way and take a fatal blow meant for Jin Ling, despite everything the Jins and Jiang Cheng did to the people he loved.
Because they chose love. Characters like Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning and Lan Wangji have the chance to move on and live a happier life because when they could've succumbed to hurt and fury and resentment, they chose to be kind and do the right thing. Wangxian get their happy ending because they learn to recognize the toxicity of the cultivation society's self-cannibalizing prejudice, and chose to pursue righteousness above personal benefit.
MDZS isn't a story about good people getting good things. Just look at what happened to Xiao Xingchen. There's really nothing satisfying or cathartic about everyone's fates at all. There's no promise about society facing the consequences of their mob mentality or Wangxian actually changing the world together. Even in TGCF, for all its makings of a love story, we get the promise of societal change once Jun Wu is deposed.
It has all the makings to be a tragedy or tale of vengeance of epic proportions - but instead, it's a love story. It's a story about making the best of what you've got, and staying true to yourself and your morals, even if that's sometimes a bitter pill to swallow. It's a story where everything that could go wrong went wrong, but the characters still managed to fight their way to a better ending by choosing kindness. At its core, MDZS is a testament to choosing compassion over cruelty no matter how tragic and hopeless life gets, no matter how long the journey gets. Even though the happy ending is more personal and only applies to the specific characters, even though we don't actually get the promise of their society becoming a better place - we still have the hope that Wei Wuxian's second chance brings. The hope that sometimes, no matter how cruel the world is, some people who deserve it still get their happy endings. That's what makes MDZS such a memorable work of art. That's why it stays with you.

Gods this fandom sometimes, I swear. I'm sorry I read two deeply bad takes back to back, and I have to rant. I'm sure others have said it better than I, but really. Come on. I actually have to wonder if people who talk about the extras actually read them because...
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji didn't leave the cultivation world in canon. They elope, and then they come back. The fact they're not involved in the bigger politics is... pretty much to be expected, but they very much do participate in the day to day lives of the Lan sect. They go where the chaos is to night hunt, they teach, Lan Wangji comforts his brother in his seclusion, and Wei Wuxian meets some new Lan disciples.
As for the cottage fantasy... Again, I honestly have to wonder if the people talking about it actually read the extra it's in? Because it's just that. A fantasy. A dream. It's basically a representation of Wei Wuxian's wants for a domestic life, something he definitely has now! He's always been characterised as someone who wants to help others and who loves cultivation. Why would you think the dream is to be taken literally?
And the idea that Wei Wuxian has 'several important relationships just floating there', that he's not dealing with... Where? Which ones? He teaches the juniors and grows closer to Jin Ling. He doesn't exactly interact with Lan Xichen, but he asks after him. He meets Mianmian again and wishes her well. He asks after Wen Ning after Lan Sizhui comes back then has some father-son bonding moments with him!
Nie Huaisang and Wei Wucian aren't close. They were friendly once, but they didn't ever meet after the lectures. I don't see how that qualifies as an "important" relationship, especially with Nie Huaisang never openly admitting to his part in Wei Wuxian's resurrection. But even then, Wei wuxian says he'll be keeping a close eye on him, so one can imagine they meet again at some point.
As for Jiang Cheng... what more do you want Wei Wuxian to do exactly? Even if you want a reconciliation, why can't Jiang Cjeng be he one to actually grow up and do the work for once? He's the one who never apologized. He's the one who is still openly hostile in the extras. If Wei Wuxian wants to move on and not interact with him, he's well within his right to do that, given how Jiang Cheng treated him. Hell, he's more generous than most since he encourages Jin Ling to talk to Jiang Cheng. If I'd been treated by someone like Jiang Cheng treated Wei Wuxian and saw him hit our nephew several times, I certainly wouldn't encourage them to meet. (But that's Wei Wuxian for you, the moral ideal and better than all of us.)
Anyway, I really don't understand why people insist on making Wangxian have a sadder ending than the one they actually did. It's a HEA for them, sorry guys. And yeah, maybe Wei wuxian has some trauma to work on... but the whole point of the character is that he doesn't let his trauma define him. That he wants to forgives, forgets and moves on.
(Also, just because he doesn't have a breakdown or the cultivation equivalent of therapy in the extra doesn't mean he's not working on them? He finally is at peace, with a solid support network. Maybe he does talk about his past hurts with Lan Wangji - Lan Wangji certai ly knows when to comfort him when he needs it. But the narrative point of the extras is to show they're moving on from the past! And you know what, sometimes the beat thing to do to heal is to do just that. They're living their best lives, deal with it.)
And finally... shit did you really read the whole book and come to the conclusion Wei Wuxian should have 'learned to accept help'? Who the fuck offered help? Who did he refuse?
(Don't say Lan Wangji. 1) I love him, but "Come back to Gusu" is very much not an obvious offer to help, and when Wei Wuxian understandably misunderstands him, he never manages to correct it.
And 2) once Wei Wuxian tells him explicitly he's not leaving the Wen remnants behind, Lan Wangji understands and backs off. He approves! I'm sure he'd do more if he could, but just like Jiang Yanli, he can't!)
Jiang Cheng literally said, 'No one will help you, no one is on your side' (and then made sure that was true by saying Wei Wuxian was the enemy of the cultivation world). Jin Zixuan chose to ask the one who was ambushed to disarm rather than the 300 cultivators attacking him and lunged at him when Wei Wuxian refused to comply (because he'd be killed if he did!!). How is that help?
Who else tried to help? Whose help did Wei Wuxian reject?
Wei Wuxian was presented with a series of bad choices and took the best he could, the ones aligned with his principles, accepting he'd have to face consequences at some point but also knowing it was still worth it. He's not the one who failed or made a fatal mistake or betrayed his word.
Rant over. Sorry about that.

Hey just read your lovely hands fanfic and the concept of the blood pool being a prison for malevolent entities barred from the cycle of reincarnation is so COOL , is it a thing implied between the lines and we western audiences lack the cultural context to recognise it ?, or is it something you came up with if so can I have permission to incorporate the concept into my own fan works?
It is a cultural thing. It's not even implied in the novel. It's just outright stated. But it's one of those hundreds of tiny cultural details that probably fly over the head of the international audience.
Remember when the Wen people came back as bloody corpses to protect Wei Ying and fought back the fierce corpses riled up by the repaired Yin Hufu?
Tumblr media
In this part, the novel describes the events following the first Sige of the Burial Mound. After the hundred cultivator houses slaughtered these defenseless elderlies, women, and children, they threw their corpses into the blood pool, thus forever barring them from reincarnation.
The phrase the novel uses is 永不超生 (lit. to never again be reborn, to be barred from the cycle of reincarnation forever). That's not a figure of speech. The novel is being literal. The Burial Mound itself is already a prison for all kinds of undead and ghost wraiths. The blood pool, by the novel descriptions, amounts to a maximum security cell. A ghost in the Burial Mound can eventually let go of their grudge/resentment and enters the afterlife/reincarnation. But anybody thrown into the blood pool doesn't have this option.
永不超生 is commonly portrayed in Chinese culture as a punishment by the authority of the underworld. That's not a judgment that a mortal is allowed to make.
The fact that the Hundred Houses carried out 永不超生 on the Wen is a detail that speaks of both their arrogance and their awareness of their guilt.
The Hundred Houses are well aware what they did to the Wen remnants is a sin. The custom of the time is, if you profess yourself to be the righteous side and slay someone seen as 'evil/villain,' it's customary to hang their corpses up for all to see.
Remember Nie Mingjue beheading Wen Xu and hanging Wen Xu's head at the gate of Uncleam Realm for all to see? NMJ is not doing that just because he has a vendetta against the Wen. He's doing that as part of ancient customs to declare to all that 'his kill is righteous,' that he doesn't need to hide it, and that Wen Xu and the Wens are villains that need to be put down.
That's the principle. Justice has no need to hide.
But not only did the Hundred Houses hide the corpses of the Wen remnants, but they also imprisoned their souls, hoping that would keep the Wen from coming back as grudge wraiths or for the karmic cycle itself to snap back for this sin.
The Hundred Houses built up the Wen remnants to be this evil army at Wei Ying's beck and call. So they need to be put down. But the truth is that they were just a bunch of elderlies, women, and children who spent all their lives being doctors (as they belong to the Qihuang branch, with their own pacifistic philosophy).
Had the Hundred Houses performed the custom and showed their supposedly righteous kill to the world, then the truth would out. That they were either liars or stupid, and that they best be prepared to repay for their transgression on both innocent Wens and on the authority of hell itself.
And that, my friend, is why the second Burial Mound Siege ended the way it did, and why the vast majority of those same cultivators left Wei Ying alone afterward. What do you think those same cultivators think when their victims break out of the supposedly unbreakable maximum security cell to save Wei Ying (another of their victims)? And then those same Wen souls entered the afterlife?
The Western vernacular for this part is: Karma is a tenacious bitch with a long memory. It doesn't matter how much they lie about their crime and act like they are righteous or how good they think they hide the proof of their deeds. Heaven and hell itself are watching.
....Sorry, I have some strong feelings about the treatment of the Wen remnants.
That is to say, feel free to incorporate it in your works.

i have the burning need to write one of those "came back wrong" fics for wwx when they find him again after the first three months in the burial mounds during the sunshot campaign but like. i need to make it REALLY bad
his body shattered when he hit the ground, and resentful energy is the only thing keeping him together. it's so agonising he's learned a way to deaden himself to the chronic pain, to the point that he can get sliced by a sword and literally not feel it, even when he's being patched up again afterwards.
he can barely eat. everything tastes like ash. the smell of meat reminds him of the carrion he was forced to consume to survive. jiang yanli starts preparing vegetarian soups for him filled with even more spice just so he can taste something.
he can't put weight on, but also isn't losing any, and he's pale with sunken cheeks and when he changes to clean himself every single joint seems like its one wrong twist away from bursting through his paper-thin skin.
wwx took in nearly all of the resentful energy in the burial mounds to keep himself alive, to hold him together. there are a thousand ghosts living under his skin, constantly screaming and chattering and whispering, not a single second of true silence. when they're packed in so close to his soul sometimes he forgets that he isn't a we, speaks in plurals and has memories and knowledge that the teenage head disciple of the yunmeng jiang should never have acquired.
that amount of resentful energy would be enough to poison anyone's mind, but only wen qing has read the studies conducted on the effects of consuming human flesh on the living. wei wuxian's brain is slowly deforming, proteins folding all wrong as the prions wrack the entire organ. he has seizures, hallucinates, unpredictable mood swings.
it's clear to literally everyone that wei wuxian is a literal dead man walking. even after the sunshot campaign is finished and he goes home to yunmeng, there is no chance of him getting better, even if they purged all the resentment from him and let his skeleton break apart again. he rescues the wen remnants and brings them back to lotus pier, but wen qing can't fix this. all his siblings and friends can do is watch as each day the wwx they know and love continues to disappear, until all thats left is a skeletal figure unable to move, periodically laughing and mumbling to himself, trapped entirely in delusion as his brain continues to destroy itself.
wwx still dies horribly. but this time he dies surrounded by his loved ones, all tied together by their love for wwx, forming strong and unbreakable bonds.
and eventually, when a young depressed boy still gives his life for revenge, wwx is given a second chance in a body that is whole and unbroken with a brain that works properly, and his siblings and lan zhan and wen qing and all the others welcome him home.

When Words Just Won't Do
by SailorBryant (@sailorbryant)
M, WIP, 10k, Wangxian
Summary: Wen Qing swallows her pride and writes a letter to Hanguang-jun asking him to escort Wei Wuxian to Jin Rulan’s one-month celebration. It changes everything. --- "Still, as you must intimately know, asking Wei Wuxian to take the cautious path is as useful as asking a mountain to kindly move out of your way. However, I cannot acknowledge my own fears while not pursuing every option available to assuage them. If possible, I would ask that Hanguang-Jun would consider escorting Master Wei to the celebration himself. He is determined to make the trip on foot, - Lan Wangji stops for a moment, reading back over the line as he makes sure he has not misread the characters. A trip from Yiling to Koi Tower will take days on foot, instead of hours. He knows Wei Ying has been casual with his sword, to his own detriment, but to choose to walk instead of fly when no one from the other clans would even know - It defies logic. Kay's comments: Don't we all love a good what-if story? What if Lan Wangji accompanied Wei Wuxian to Jin Ling's full moon celebration instead of Wen Ning? Would have things gone better? Something this story explores! Though at first it's about Lan Wangji being sneaky (which I loved) as he receives a letter from Wen Qing, which makes his family suspicious and then we get some good slice-of-life content of the Wens and Wei Wuxian in the Burial Mounds on top! Truly the cherry on top! I really enjoy Lan Wangji's POV in this story and how it portrays his frustration towards himself. He wants to be better, he wants to express himself so that Wei Wuxian understands him, but he's struggling, especially after past misunderstandings... Excerpt: By the end of the dinner, his uncle’s shoulders seemed to have relaxed, and his eyes were less sharp, assured that nothing was off in Lan Wangji’s behavior. If his brother’s knowing eyes see something different than his uncle’s, he keeps his thoughts to himself. After a quick reminder of their duties in the morning of preparing the senior disciples for the trip to Koi Tower, Lan Qiren dismisses them both with a nod. The two brothers trail out. “Wangji,” comes the hesitant voice of his brother when they reach the path that splits to lead to their respective residences. Lan Wangji turns to face him, giving him his full attention. His brother searches his eyes, his face, his posture. He opens his mouth multiple times to speak, but hesitancy crawls across him in grasping waves and he closes it every time. Lan Wangji knows his brother does not know the exact contents of the letter; it has stayed on his person throughout the day. But he knows that his brother knows him. And his brother is smart; he knows the situation and can make his own inferences, his own assumptions.
pov lan wangji, canon divergence, ambush at qiongqi path, fix-it, everybody lives, wen remnants live, wen remnants deserve better, canon - mo dao zu shi & the untamed combination

au of an au for mdzs where canon plays out exactly as it was supposed to except
wwx became a calamity after dying and cared for his coven of ghosts in yiling before mxy summoned him for revenge.
he still elopes with lwj after solving the corpse question
supreme ghosts have a similar ability to gods taking deputies, except since they're not sharing immortality they can have a lot more of them
wwx's "deputies" are (in order) jiang cheng, the wen remnants, luo qingyang, nie huaisang, mo xuanyu, jin ling, lan jingyi, ouyang zhizhen, lan sizhui, and lan wangji.
being a calamity's "deputy" means that you are soul bonded to them, with a kind of preternatural sense of the wellbeing of the entire coven.
one of the heavenly officials decides to fuck around with time, and only other heavenly officials were supposed to remember, except extremely strong ghosts and their covens also remember because there are TWO gods married to calamities, and calamities are weirdly cooperative with each other (hc, hx, wwx, & gL discuss trade agreements over tea and artistic process over alcohol).
thus like 75 people are now in the past.
wwx's child body cant stand the power his soul has and just kinda crumbles under the weight. thats mostly fine tho cause he can shapeshift.
of course he immediately comes up with a dastardly plan to inflict as much chaos onto the sects as possible while also protecting his loved ones at the same time. he gets in contact with the wen remnants (bigger and there's more of them) and slowly moves them over to yiling while he builds places for them to live on the mountain, and then offers the people of yiling a very good deal:
"we'll deal with all your ghost problems for free, and in exchange we get discounts on food, and you tell everyone who comes asking that the Yiling Wei sect has been here the entire time."
its almost too easy to set up, too. they forge some trade agreements and other documents to place in the other sects' files, waiting to be found, with ease, bc he knows what the filing for the jiang, lan, wen, and nie looks like, and part of the story is that the jin offended them so badly that they just stopped doing business with them altogether and also tend to actively hate them with few exceptions.
meanwhile, huaisang, qingyang, and wangji will reference the Yiling Wei and act like this is something everyone knows about, and jiang cheng catches on and starts doing the same.
wwx's plan is to drive them all insane by appearing out of nowhere and acting like he's been there the entire time. make them question reality.
wen popo, at a discussion conference: i'll be standing in for my grandson so he can participate in the games
jiang fengmian, initiating polite conversation: your grandson? what happened to your son?
wen popo, internally cackling: fengmian! are you so quick to discard changze like this?! for shame!!
jiang fengmian, who has never met this lady: what
wen popo: you know i trusted him when he said he wanted to stand by his sworn brother's side but if this is how you treat his memory after he was so unwaveringly loyal to you, only ever leaving for Cangse, the love of his life, then i'll have to have you stricken from the legacy registry!
wen popo, with unfaltering confidence: good evening wen-zhongzhu
wen ruohan, who has incurable face blindness: well met Wei-zhongzhu (do i know her???)
nie mingjue is the only one who's taking any of this well and thats solely because his brother has been spoon feeding him Yiling Wei propaganda for 13 years. lan xichen has a crisis because his baby brother eloped with a clan leader he met thrice and they're having a spring wedding.

Wei Wuxian: The Untamed Hero
Wei Wuxian had to be killed even if:
1. He carried his sword
2. He didn't use gui dao
3. He didn't create Yin HuFu
4. The Wen remnants were not in the plot
Then, why? The reason is here, voiced by Jin Zixun of all people:
Wei WuXian, you are too bold! Did the LanlingJin Sect invite you today? And you dare run wild here. Do you really think that you’re invincible, that nobody has the courage to confront you? Do you want to overturn the Heavens?”
Wei WuXian smiled, “You’re comparing yourself to the Heavens? Excuse my language, but your face is a little too thick, isn’t it?”
So, you see, this untamed heart can only meet with tragedy as the world is unrighteous, as those who are in power think their actions cannot be contested (and they often aren't!), and that their words are like the law. How many times have we seen, a convicted powerful person escape the justice system? Far too many. And how many times innocents or victims were framed for crimes? Also too many. People like Wei Wuxian aren't condemned by fate, but rather, being born into a world where the "heavens" are those who are powerful and corrupted, he very well might be destined to live tragically, along with others of his type.
Returning to the matter of this particular scene: on one hand, the Jins throw private banquets, gilded with gold. The major scandals are: Jin Zixun is forcing the Lans to drink alcohol! You see, Lan Xichen can't outrightly refuse, so he is trying to be polite about his rejection. Jin Guangyao is trying to reason and excuse, and distract. The crowd spurs Jin Zixun on, wanting to see the Lans drink for once and fall to their level.
Everyone is in their own fine little world, doing their niceities in their golden halls drinking expensive wine, admiring pretty women, gasping at scandalous behavior, asking for favour, gossiping etc.
And then Wei Wuxian walks in. Uninvited. He simply drinks the wine himself, before demanding these people to spare him their time for real wordly issues, such as deaths, debts, cruelty, the parts that society wishes to hide. A few scenes later, we are shown with much description, just how terrible Qiongqi Path is. That's the Jin's backyard. You see their achievements that are drawn on those big walls? We see the reality of the people making them.
Now, let us come to another incident. Think of the soup incident. I fully expect before Wei Wuxian came into the scene, people were simply gossiping, uninterested in finding out what was going on, why Lady Jiang is crying. Then, Wei Wuxian comes and realizes Jiang Yanli who never really cries... was crying, and firstly decides to beat the shit out of Jin Zixuan. Secondly, he understands the whole truth, beats Jin Zixuan up for humiliating his Shijie, and also makes the other girl face responsibility.
Although his shijie had an easy temper, except for how they cuddled and cried together the day the three of them reunited after Lotus Pier was destroyed, she hadn’t really shed many tears in front of others, much less cry so loudly, so pitifully in front of so many people. Wei WuXian was filled with panic. As he tried to ask her, Jiang YanLi was crying so badly that she couldn’t even speak properly. Then, when he saw Jin ZiXuan standing on the side, astonished, he fumed with anger, wondering to himself why it was the dog of a person again. With a kick, he pounced on Jin ZiXuan. The fight between the two would have alerted the Heavens. All of the cultivators around the base came to break up their fight. Amid the ruckus, he finally understood what was the cause of all this, and became even more angered. He spread his tough talk, saying that one day he’d definitely make Jin ZiXuan die in his hands, he told people to drag out the cultivator woman.
A round of questions later, the truth emerged, and Jin ZiXuan’s entire body was frozen. No matter how much Wei WuXian continued to curse at him, he returned neither words nor fists, his face dark. If not that Jiang YanLi held up her hand a while later, while Jiang Cheng and Jin GuangShan came to pull Wei WuXian away, it was likely that even now Jin ZiXuan wouldn’t be able to attend the hunt of Phoenix Mountain.
See.
The point is, perhaps, people feel Wei Wuxian's actions are unnecessary. But imagine if he wasn't there! The consequences as I predict them will have been:
1. Jiang Cheng who doesn't want to upset a prominent clan would've grumbled and cursed underneath his breath, but eventually just moved away from the ruckus and taken his sister away.
2. Perhaps the truth would never have been found out, unless Jin Zixuan later searched by himself.
3. Thus, Jiang Yanli's reputation would be stained for the years to come.
It's because Wei Wuxian dared that the truth was revealed. I took this small incidents simply to highlight this, without the addition of more factors. In the book, often, it might seem like people are trying to stop him from creating trouble. You might often wish, ugh, this is going to be so bad... The point is Wei Wuxian knows! He's not stupid, he knows of the consequences of his actions.
But he isn't the one creating trouble. It was already created by the likes of those very people who try to stop him from investigating deeper. The trouble in question is that immoral and unrighteous words and actions and decisions have already been made. Society tries to hide them. If you can't see it, it's not there. Yet, even if it is not visible, a crime has its traces and it will bleed into their world sooner or later.
Wei Wuxian forces people to snap out of their comfort zones. He doesn't care for the barriers they set around themselves. Here are some examples to explain what I mean by these barriers:
Who dares hit Jin Zixuan, who's the only heir of LanlingJin, even when he deserves it? Protected by his status, his birth, his clan who dares? Wei Wuxian does.
Who dares to annoy Lan Wangji, the second jade of Lan, who from birth is considered otherwordly, strict, immovable, rigid, untouchable and protected by his extreme cold aura? Wei Wuxian dares.
Who dares to enter cultivation society without even wielding sword, without even cultivating a core? Wei Wuxian!
Since time unknown, treasures have belonged to the powerful sects: The Lan Clan and their library, their many secret techniques. The Jin clan and their treasures, their gold. The Nie Sabres. The Zidian. Yet, a son of a servant somehow ends up possessing the most powerful treasure all by his own! Everyone goes to this popular refinery, some famed blacksmith, or that popular sect to get specially created spiritual weapons, yet Chenqing, one of the most powerful weapons, was forged alone by Wei Wuxian during his 3 months in the Burial Mound!
Since years, the cultivation world has taken to heart rules of Lans, words of the powerful sects, and their leaders! Then, once again, this orphan child comes and bends the world and changes the cultivation society forever! Yiling Laozu said that... Yiling Laozu created... Yiling Laozu's manuscripts...
His words literally become the law.
Think of how 13 years after Wei Wuxian's death when "all was peaceful" despite us knowing very well, just how much shit happened after his death - slaughter of minor clans, deaths of two prominent sect leaders, xue yang etc (because, you know, most of it was purely accidental, kept hush-hush, or the victims were people who weren't important), he comes back to life and in a matter of a couple of months, upends the cultivation society again.
The "problem" is that this guy simply doesn't conform. The problem is that he is better. The problem is that he is not unnecessarily humble about it, despite his origins. He doesn't seem to treat himself as an outlier, but an equal. (That's why I hate insecure Wei Wuxian, like this guy is righteous enough he won't even treat himself badly.) The problem is that all those barriers - social classes, power, the locked doors - they won't keep him away.
Even if he was only the Jiang Da-shixiong with a bright golden core, he will still not be a conformist. To those who aren't used to having their decisions questioned, he is their worst enemy. To whose who are used to talking in circles, spreading rumors, he is asking them. What source do you have? What is the factual evidence behind what you are saying? Why are you saying this now?
Think of how he cross questioned a petty seller selling Yiling Laozu portraits in Qinghe, and how he questioned the gathered cultivation sects in Lotus Pier during Sisi and Bicao's intervention with the same sort of attitude. Surely, there was a major class difference, power difference between the two. Yet, they don't matter to him. What matters is the truth.
So, no matter what, when the people who are in power, start having too much dirty laundry and corpses in their backyards, he will definitely know. For this guy, knowing isn't enough - he will get to the crux of the issue. The problem is, he even has the skill for it. He has the ability. One also can't distract him with offers, promises, gifts, riches, status, women. He doesn't care for any of that. He perhaps might even hate one's victims. Yet he will stand up for them.
Of course, those who are in power, all smile at each other. They understand things sometimes have to be done. People sometimes have to be silenced. "We know better."
Then, Wei Wuxian comes in and says, actually you don't. He comes in with factual accounts, evidences, forces you to face your misdeeds. Says you're all a bunch of hypocritical people. No, perhaps what is worse is that he will make you realize that's what you are! Because he's got to be good at talking, too! He's not going to act on anger or be stunned in fear.
So, now you have someone who's not only digging into your evil deeds, someone who's capable, who's not easy to persuade, but also someone with high emotional intelligence who can play the same role as you do, of being a noble, accepted gentlemen with immaculate manners, of very high literacy and outdo you. Because this guy knows very well how society works, he can comprehend social cues perhaps better than you can. He can use your own polite words and nature against you.
It's precisely because of this he must be killed. Perhaps, in every world, Wei Wuxian will end up being the victim. It's only that in MDZS, these were the particular circumstances, and those were the particular excuses.
My personal take is: sometimes it is good to be a centrist, and hold everyone's better intentions in mind. most of the times it might not be, as there are many conflicting systems in place that allow for true victims who are stuck. most often, the victims are always the ones who DON'T have a voice, who are brushed over as numbers of corpses, rather than people with stories. most often, kindness is shown in little action that are trampled upon by those who hold true power. most often the people who are good, who are heroes die young, or are hated and ridiculed, for speaking up for the victims. it's not right, and never will be.
if someone like wei wuxian or his presence in the book makes you uncomfortable it might be because you hold the "niceities" and the pleasantries to be of more importance than the issues at hand. just because something is too troublesome doesn't mean it is wrong. if everytime he enters the scene you're scared of what he's going to do next, you should know it's not him who is the problem but the prople who aren't doing anything who are. don't be scared of "trouble-makers." he's not erratic or spontaneous. he has considered society's standards and deemed it useless. why is that that the koi tower scene, where he is in his "yiling laozu, loss of control, threatening" moment is followed immediately by him being extremely kind to Wen qing ? it's not that he's losing control. it's that Jin Zixun wouldn't have acted and told him where the people were without him using intimidation tactics. Wei Wuxian is the one forced into bad corners by the powerful people, where he has to show his edges. Don't end up twisted the narratives. if you bite someone for a while, expect to be hit.

16. Hello again! Thank you for your recs!
I was wondering if you could rec some fics with sentient burial mounds, like- them being protective of wwx, sort of treating him like- either as the master/chosen/hier of burial mounds or something? Or any story with ghosts/spirits being protective of wwx or treating him as a sort of leader or something? Just want some wwx & supernatural goodness lol.
Also, any fics with wwx being sort of like- strangely in tune with nature? And maybe people being freaked out by his connection to the nature or dead. Like - cryptid vibes wwx lol
Thank you!!!

17. Hello! I'm looking for fics with:-
A) rich wwx!! As in- he's like rich af, but people don't know it? Like he's very normal about it but doesn't advertise the fact that he could buy everything he wants. I'd also like if he's big on donating, or just helping people in general and stuff.
B) wwx doing dangerous stuff like volunteering in places with natural disasters/civil unrest, etc. Him being very into activism and stuff
C) jealous sizhui...like- he's jealous of wwx paying attention to other kids and stuff. Maybe something like- wwx thinks sizhui has lwj as father figure, doesn't remember him, or maybe he'll be bothered if wwx acts too familiar or something? So he keeps his distance. It could be a modern au too, or any fic where wwx adopts other kids/is a mentor figure to them/has close relationship with them and sizhui is jealous of that??
I appreciate you taking the time to do this!
