was implies past tense that i will never reach. being a drarry is more than just a fleeting moment in time is more than just ship of the week for me in the midst of my boredom and encroaching dread no no being drarry is one of the foundational character traits that, having known, one can make sense of a lot of the ships I go for. like drarry is the foundational text in the historiography of my yaoi dissertation. every ship I’ve ever liked i have liked because there is an element of drarry in them. this is also why all my favorite ships have someone die. that metamorphosis cannot be undermined in a story trying to tell perseverance and making it against all the odds and waiting for each other at the end of everything like there is a red string of fate pulling them together at the first moment and the last and no matter how elongated and thin that that thread may be for years and years the thread is still there. the fact of having to close each other deliberately and consciously even when it would be easier for everyone and for yourselves if you snapped the string once and for all. but literally you can always come back to life and then the next generation is predicated on your commitment to being better and doing better and love bigger than death. literally francesca by my baby daddy. so yes i am a drarry❤️💚

Redemption Arcs are like Marijuana for my Soul

Is it just me, but it's never very satisfying for me when fics sort of gloss over Draco's redemption post-war. When Harry and the gang sort of just forgive him for nothing and they all agree to let bygones be bygones and how oh we were all child soldiers puppeteered by men more powerful than us, so let's just all blame them and go on without any animosity,

I can't buy it.

Cause these people just went through an all-out war, and you're telling me they don't feel a single ounce of resentment against Draco for not making better choices? For believing in the blood supremacy ideology that got people killed and tortured? Not to even mention the bullying.

Like, Draco was a shitty person, but what made his character so interesting to me is that I genuinely see room for growth in him. Because of the very fact that yes, he WAS puppeteered by adults more powerful than him, and he WAS an unwilling child soldier caught up in things he really didn't know the first thing about. But, that will never excuse his actions.

He was thrust into a position where his family could die and he had to make do with the choices he had. It made him re-evaluate everything his family stood for, and mind you, his family isn't JUST any family, is it? It's a legacy. Generations of twisted ideals and pride and ego, all on the shoulders of this one boy who is starting to realize that everything he'd ever been taught, was a lie.

Which is why I love Draco redemption stories. I like it when he has to really work hard at himself into becoming a better person. I love the way the people around him start to see that he's a changed man and gives him a second chance. I love the way Harry slowly falls in love with this new, amazing, kind, snarky, funny man he never had the pleasure to know before, and then he'll wonder, very briefly, if this was the boy behind that handshake the whole time.

I will now and forever be a dramione hater, I hate how certain dramione shippers perceive Hermione.

Hermione “brightest witch of her age” Granger would NOT fall head over heels for the guy who bullied her and called her a slur for six years. Also, in what WORLD would Draco ever feel that way about Hermione? Draco was a spoilt little brat who hated muggleborns and thought they were subserviant to purebloods, it wasn’t a “playground crush”, he felt Hermione was beneath him(and NOT beneath him in the way that you guys try to push in fanfics)

Also, ALSO, if the only way you can make Draco a likable love interest is to bash Ron, maybe he’s just a bad love interest.

Don’t even get me STARTED on how heavily sexualized Hermione is sometimes, Jesus Christ it’s like her whole personality is just being a glory hole for Draco at any time of the day it’s GROSS, on that note the amount of SA, specifically of Hermione whether it be from Draco or a third character just to make Draco save her and be a cool good guy, which is in an abundance of dramione’s media is so gross. You give Draco the barest minimum of character development, sometimes not even that, then make Hermione basically just an one dimensional hole with no other characteristics except her sexual prowess, and that’s not saying you can’t make Hermione be comfortable with her sexuality, that’s great, but holy shit is that all she is, is that all the development she gets as a character in your mind??

To make it even worse, Draco is sometimes STILL a piece of shit to her, news flash guys “mudblood” isn’t a silly little insult in the Harry Potter world, it’s a derogatory slur!

It’s not even enemies to lovers! At all! Drarry is enemies to lovers! Dramione is just bully x bullied, oppressed x oppressor at the worst.

Hi Liv! What really draws you to Drarry as a pairing and Harry and Draco as individual characters?

Personally I was always a fan of Draco (because of the whole bad boy rebel thing- I didn’t realise there was so, so much more to him than until I started getting obsessed with Drarry) but I actually never really liked Harry (except I always supported his decisions and loved his sass) all that much in the beginning until I joined the Drarry fandom and realised that in retrospect, he’s an incredible character and wasn’t done any justice at all in the series. I mean the turning point for me was revisiting the part where he tricked Ron into performing well by pretending to give him the Felix Felicis. Like this boy-

But what made me fall for Harry was The Ordeal of Being Known by @lou-isfake . That fic. Oh. My. Gosh. The amount they delved into Harry psyche and the extensive knowledge they had of that character, what he went through and how all of these experiences shaped his life later on; I’m a little suspicious of them actually being Harry’s actual creator and not the terfling (I personally think all rights of Harry Potter should go to them).

And Draco. What the fuck. He’s the most underrated character in the entire series because unlike how he was portrayed as a villain who ended up receiving no redemption arc, he was a victim of his own circumstance just like (his lover) Harry, and they were both very gay grey characters.

And the more fanfics I read, the more and more I fall in love with the millions of slightly altered versions of them both and honestly it’s criminal how little we really know about them. And well, Drarry. My obsession with these reading about these two idiots falling in love (which is canon in my mind) grows enormously every single day and I just pray for more opportunities to get involved within the fandom because I’d quite literally have lost my mind if it weren’t for Drarry.

But my thesis aside I really want to know what you feel about it as well (and your lovely followers too!).

Well this was one hell of a Ted Talk, I love it! It was really interesting to read your thoughts and insights about this. And TOOBK is an absolute masterpiece, @lou-isfake deserves all the love and praise for coming up with such a moving, thoughtful and emotionally complex story, honestly their mind!!!

As for me… I will admit that I haven’t revisited the books in ages, probably even before Cursed Child came out *hides* I found the increasing plot holes, lack of character depth and diversity issues very disappointing and since fic gave me everything I needed in terms of expanding the universe, I kinda let go of the books pretty early on. I moved abroad 4 years ago and didn’t even think of taking them with me lol for shame 💀

Which brings me to my second point: I’ve never felt particularly drawn to either Harry or Draco in the books. Great levels of sass aside, I found Harry boring, whiny and indolent, while Draco was confined to that one-dimensional bully arc that wasn’t really done in a clever or satisfying way, and didn’t deliver redemption or closure. I’ve never found them compelling as main character/antagonist, I didn’t even care enough to ship them. Now I understand my perception was shaped by young Liv’s limited mind and bad writing, I’d probably read Harry differently and be more compassionate towards him. Isn’t it great that good fic and growing up give us some perspective!

So to answer your main question, what drives me to them is a good “enemies to lovers” story because I freaking love these dynamics. I love the fire, the intensity, the inner conflict, the vulnerability, give me all the implications and complications. Fic makes it possible because it gives them emotional depth while exploring multiple post-war possibilities. There are so many ways to bring them together and pull them apart, and so many interesting ways to expand the universe and the magic lore while doing that. Like you said, it’s refreshing to see those slightly different versions of them finding each other and falling in love! At this point I feel like I’m more knowledgeable about fanon as the canon characterization becomes a distant memory in the depths of my mind. I love it that fics take time to properly explore their trauma and give them the room to process it and to do some self-discovery, whether it’s professional, sexual/romantic, in a found family scenario, etc. One fic that transformed the way I see Harry is Away Childish Things by lettered, it felt like a punch in the stomach but oh, it hurt so good!

I took many breaks from Drarry over the years but I keep coming back because we’re lucky to have SO MUCH top notch content. It blows my mind the amount of talented creators that keep joining the fandom, the superior quality of their works, the sense of community we all share. I haven’t found this anywhere else and it fuels my love for the ship which, let’s face it, might not have survived under other circumstances. I wondered if creating a blog would be a good idea because I didn’t plan on staying around for very long, yet here I am two years later nowhere close to leaving 😂

Wow this got really long and somehow I feel like this was an extremely vague and unsatisfactory answer, sorry anon. Thanks for the ask, I’d love to see other people’s thoughts on this too!

Enemies-to-lovers ships are toxic.

I can only imagine how toxic they are.

Drarry. Draco wished DEATH upon Harry and vice-versa. May I also add, Harry almost MURDERED Draco and the latter wanted to ship the former back to London on the Hogwarts Express? What do y'all drarries see in the ship?

Dramione. This isn't even enemies to lovers, it's a victim x abuser ship. Draco pretty much ABUSED Hermione during the whole series. Need I explain more?

Tomtord. Tom and Tord attempted KILLING each other. The End is basically just Tom and Tord's rivalry in detail. Tom even HARPOONED Tord's robot, thank you.

Red Pastry. I like the ship name, but Red Velvet and Pastry are rivals, if you didn't see the Tower Of Sweet Chaos story. Sure, Pastry might've felt bad for Velvet at the end, but doesn't change the fact that they're rivals. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

I absolutely LOVED your ted-talk about drarry. How do you think they'd get together?

Ahh, thank you, love!

For me, it would take some good time before they actually got together romantically. Because even though they were obsessed with each other during the school years, they only knew what they saw. They never knew each other personally.

They would have to be forced together for some reason (either it be from sharing common rooms at Hogwarts during the 8th year, because Minerva has no idea where else to put them but together, being forcefully teamed up as Auror partners, or have an accidental bonding that requires them being close).

They would throw nasty comments at each other. They would bicker. But somewhere along the lines, they realise they have the same sort of humour.

They start pranking each other (Draco hiding Harry's glasses, putting Sleekaezy's Hair Potion anywhere Potter would go, Harry buying Draco a stuffed white ferret, putting pink hair dye in his shampoo, etc).

They would slowly and unintentionally form a sort of friendship between them, based on their common grounds. Such as being sassy, dramatic, clever and their humour.

They would make each other laugh like no one else could. Harry would laugh at Draco's complete failure of trying to grasp muggle things, while Draco would continuously mock Harry for the gawking girls following him around whenever they walked around Diagon Alley.

They would sit up late at night together, when they can't sleep because of nightmares, and confide in each other. They would tell the other about their side of the war. Draco would understand Harry in a way no one else does, which for Harry, is highly valued.

They would find themselves protecting the other, defending the other. Slowly starting to care about each other because of the friendship they slowly forged.

Harry would tell Draco all about his time at the Dursleys, making Draco furious and wanting to storm Privet Drive to scold them and throw hexes and jinxes at them.

Draco would tell Harry about his strict childhood. How he would never be allowed to go outside and play in the rain, how he would be fed false facts and be thrown into the world of pureblood supremacy. That he would be punished at home during the holidays for letting a "filthy mudblood" top his grades.

Harry would drag Draco into doing things they were never allowed to do as kids. They would run around in cornfields, dance in the rain, have food wars, dress in only muggle clothing and swim in the ocean.

During that time, they would occasionally touch each other. Like grabbing the other's hand, catching the other if they accidentally fell, and they would realise that having that sort of intimacy did something to them. They would find themselves wanting to be near the other, wanting to hold hands, find every tiny excuse in the world to hug the other.

And during one night, when Harry shows Draco the concept of Disney movies, Draco would laugh at something and Harry would look at him and he would just...

realise.

Realise that he loved Draco.

Realise that he had slowly fallen in love with the blond git.

And he'd throw Draco clumsy hints, making jokes about them being together, mentioning the "enemies to friends to lovers"-trope in one of the muggle books he read. But he would never go further, because he'd be too bloody scared. He didn't want to lose Draco. He didn't want to scare him.

But Draco would've picked up on those hints, because he wasn't daft. Nor blind. Unbeknownst to Harry, Draco had a crush on him and had had it for the longest time.

Draco didn't just believe that Harry could save them from Voldemort. Draco's heart broke when that awful monster jeered about Harry being dead.

Draco had sent Dobby to Harry at Privet Drive when he was twelve, to get him to stay away from Hogwarts, because he knew his father was up to something. Something to do with the Chamber of Secrets, because he had accidentally heard his father's conversation to get rid of the mudbloods. Especially the one mudblood that bested his own son.

And although Harry wasn't a mudblood, he was a half-blood. And that was enough, which Draco knew.

And that was the first time Draco defied his father. For Harry's sake. And he'd tell Harry about this one night, during their sleepless ones. And Harry wouldn't be able to restrain himself. He'd be so overwhelmed by the feelings for the prat, that he'd throw himself over him and kiss him passionately.

And it was just right. From that moment on, they just knew. They knew they'd spend eternity together. They would love each other, soothe the other, share laughs, bicker, defend the other, they would make the other a better person. They would complete each other.

And Harry would know, that somewhere, Sirius, Remus and his parents cheered with laughter and applause. Because they had known all along. Harry and Draco were just too much like Lily and James.

Blimey, this got longer than I expected, LMAO.

if you're sitting behind the rider, grabbing onto their shoulders makes it uncomfortable for them and holding onto their waist is uncomfortable for you. you don't really need to hold anywhere, you can just lean your upper body forward and your balance will be fine.

Draco had no idea what made him go into the Forbidden Forest in the middle of the night.

Maybe it was out of curiosity, if it still held the promise of something forbidden and dangerous now that he had seen the worst things a person could see. Maybe he wanted to know if the forest was just as scary as he remembered it from his first year at Hogwarts, or if the scared little boy he once had been was lost in the memories of better days.

He was afraid of more mundane things these days. If he'd get a job after finishing Hogwarts, if he'd ever be able to face society again or if he'd be shunned forever, if he'd find someone to spend his life with or if he'd have to stay alone. Those things were the ones he was worrying about now.

Rustling leaves to his left caught his attention and he stopped and tried to make out what it was, but there was nothing but darkness. Shrugging it off he walked on, curious to see what he'd find in here.

Centaurs crossed his way but ignored him entirely, he recognised one of them as Firenze and somehow felt happy that the others had welcomed him back home. Maybe they knew that Draco would cross their paths, maybe not. He'll probably never find out.

The air around him was cooling down and Draco saw cobwebs wrapped around the trees in front of him like glittering milky curtains and decided to head the other way. He had heard of Hagrid's Acromantulas and knew better than interrupting them.

He still wasn't sure what he was looking for when he reached a clear field that was lit by the full moon. The taw on the grass underneath him looked mesmerising and Draco couldn't get himself to move any further.

He wondered for a second if this place had any meaning, was something special, when he heard a crack in the woods.

Looking up he was stunned to see a herd of Unicorns watching him from the treeline, the golden foals sniffing the air curiously while the grown one's just stood behind and watched.

He was sure they would leave, not trusting him, probably sensing the things he had done, the dark magic running through his veins and poisoning his entire body.

Just as he was about to leave, thinking this was their clearing and that he was intruding their grounds, one of the biggest Unicorns he ever saw stepped forwards, coming closer, slowly and in no rush.

Standing frozen to the spot Draco watched it approach him, shuddering slightly as it sniffed his head. He tried not to think of the horn probably sharp enough to impale him once it figured out that he wasn't one of the good people. Not a noble wizard like Potter was, not as big hearted as Hagrid.

But to his surprise it laid down, just then and there, right next to him, and closed its eyes. And suddenly he was surrounded by the herd.

Reaching out, Draco let his fingers slide through the mane of the Unicorn next to him, careful to not pull any hair out. He felt tears burn in his eyes as it didn't try to get away from him.

Hidden in the darkness of a group of trees Harry watched the encounter, smile spreading over his face.
