FINALLY getting around to answering these! since im better at them, heres some college age headcanons that apply just as much to how i view them in the show!

DIPPER PINES

parents are INCREDIBLY supportive, super understanding. hes on hormone blockers in the show and starts HRT as soon as hes able, getting top surgery and bottom surgery in his early 20s

Two mini reviews, partly brought to you by tumblr autosaving - Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas. I wasn't sure what to expect; I really liked The Sunbearer Trials (Ive not yet read the sequel), and DNF'd Lost In The Never Woods because it was the wrong type and intensity of dark and spooky for me at the time. Cemetery Boys is a freaking delight. Maybe my least favourite part was the villain reveal, it made sense but either it wasnt foreshadowed enough or I just wanted better for that character? idk. But this isnt primarily a plot book, its a romance, and its a story about community and acceptance, and figuring out how you fit into the world when you're not the shape you're expected to be. And it did really well with both those aspects. I also appreciate that with so many stories, real and fictional, about people who have to leave their communities to find themselves, I appreciate a story of someone who never once thinks maybe I need to leave, and instead forges on to create space for himself in his community and his heritage. That's not everyone's story and thats totally fine. Our experiences are diverse and we deserve diverse stories. Its all good. As for the romance, its really believable. Its quite an opposites-attract situation, from Julian's aggressive queerness and non-issue with Yadriel's transness making his albeit and unexpected presence a breath of fresh air to Yadriel, to their growing understanding of each other's lives and admiration for the strength of each others convictions. (When Julian is upset about his friends and Yadriel nevertheless pauses to set that boundary about ghost-safety, that was hot.). And the ghost aspect! (this is not a mini review anymore lol). I was not really sure how that was going to go, and then cheering for them, and then wondering what the heck they were gonna do about ongoing ghost-itude and the finiteness of that situation, and actually I really liked how it went. The romance and how they push each other and grow to understand each other is fun, romantic, sexy, heartfelt. Remarkably sexy given that one of them is a ghost who cant be touched. (Spoilers for a sec - the scene on the car where Yadriel reaches for Julian's jacket to pull him closer and there's nothing there to grab? Oh that feels like grief.) The book is quite a bit about grief. Missing parents, missing support networks, missing opportunities to be yourself and be accepted. Its about a guy who can communicate with ghosts and its set around Dia de Meurtos, there's grief themes.

I also really love Maritza, showing off another aspect of (gender) non-conformity, that its not only trans people who have trouble fitting fairly strict defined roles. (Julian's friends do so similarly). Almost all the Spanish I picked up from context, but how Julian refers to Yadriel at the end I knew I had to look up that word specifically and oh my heart. Overall really enjoyed. probably 9/10 second, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. I havent read the books/comics, I have seen the movie. This show....for at least the first half I had no idea what the rules of the universe were or what exactly was going on or what themes exactly were being explored. I was definitely entertained though. The last few episodes manage to make sense of the first few and deliver on those themes in ways I quite liked. I liked that Ramona is the "manic pixie dream girl" and then almost immediately gets upstaged for that role by Envy Addams. I normally am annoyed at stories in which some boring guy "gets" the manic pixie dream girl and certainly doesn't appreciate her - you know the kind who goes on reddit and complains that she wont stop talking about slugs or decorates their whole house in anime? And I know scott pilgrim is a comment on that trope. I like how its about scott but its not really about scott. Largely its about Ramona and her friends (and her exes). And the others recognise that scott isnt so great, or so smart, and also that if Ramona likes him thats cool. He can be a "lovable idiot" and shes not automatically making a mistake with him. If they're happy they're happy. (and of course the ways that *could* go wrong, but arent destined to). Plus the music is fun, the visuals are bright and pretty. It might lean overstimulating for some people, I had to stop and think about my spoon levels between episodes. Thats what I got for today. Two very different fun stories I recommend like 8-9/10, not perfect but a damn good ride.

my name is rebecca. i am a young trans girl, who just went on summer break from middle school. my parents are strict, overprotective and transphobic. at school i had access to other trans people. at home i have no way of expressing myself. at school i couldn’t either, but at home i feel disappointed faces staring at me every day. i’m openly trans online. i’m terrified of them finding out that i’m trans, i know they would disown me. but i’m tired of hiding and looking the way i do. i’m tired of my short hair and my thick brows and my boyish outfits. masc presenting trans women are amazing, but i’m just not one of them.

i’m extremely insecure, and i have some makeup hidden under my bed, as well as a bra and a skirt my friend bought me. i would love to go out with my friends as the girl that i am, but i’m horrified of the possibility of my family or other kids from school seeing me and outing me.

do you have any advice?

hello there rebecca, im so sorry you're dealing with this situation right now. i feel like a lot of folks can relate to this- while you may have support in places like school or sometimes even work you may not at home and it's especially hard when you're home from school for the summer or winter. i can totally understand how hard this would be on you right now and i'm sorry that the pressure from being observed by your family is so intense, i would feel the same way

if it's possible, i wonder if you would be able to go hang out at a friend's house and spend time with them there, if you know of anyone who has an accepting home environment? obviously you do NOT have to out yourself to anyone's parents, but if you know someone has accepting parents it may be worth a shot. you could also try to go somewhere fairly isolated, maybe hang out at a natural spot or park or something like that and just be yourselves

that can be a very hard situation to be in, i totally understand being scared of being spotted in public as well. you may be able to see if there are any places in town, like queer bars or other queer organizations in town that are safe for minors or have times for all ages meetups. a lot of places like these will have bathrooms where you could change in and out of your clothes, and you could keep them in a neutral backpack, or something like that!

it would only be an issue if you were seen leaving and folks knew about that location, but the likelihood of your parents or anyone being near a queer location and knowing about it is slim, and even if you came out of one you could say you were visiting a friend, or were curious about an event that they had going on because you saw cool costumes, you were enjoying the music, etc.

if anyone has any more suggestions feel free to add on, we hope you're able to feel more like yourself this summer without your parents getting in your business and stressing you out. you deserve to be able to be yourself, even if it's stressful and scary. i hope we can work something out for you, stay safe for now, rebecca!!

Rise Turtle Headcannons

Bunch of head cannons of the turtles.

Mikey:

When using his Mystic powers, he has a limit to how long or how big of a spell he can do, because when he uses a spell it basically "burns" him. those bright light along his arms are the burns, they heal better than a normal burn, but basically using it too much can cause a serious injury. so if he is practicing his powers he would need breaks to let his hand cool down.

He likes using his mystic powers to create glowing chains, and often uses them in his artworks.

he goes into his shell when scarred, and after the kraang, has been sleeping while in there, which may or may not cause sore limbs when he wakes up. luckily getting out of the habit tho

loves painting his brothers shells

Shellshocked ( i love the ship so much it is adorable) they will do artworks together and they always end up as absolute masterpieces.

He goes over to Draxums place once (or twice) every week to train his powers.

Leo:

he got into being the medic because he likes how they say how good he is at it.

He surprisingly likes to study it and even went as far as to pester Donnie to make him a sort of spy drone to sneak into medical schools to learn how to do certain procedures and how to treat different sicknesses. Sometimes he would use the drone and drive it into hospitals to see how it is done on an actual person with said injury or sickness.

He does stay up studying this which does not help with his insomnia at all.

also Leosagi. Those two are both dumbasses, and will get flustered over each others garbage attempts to flirt.

Is Casey Jr's father figure, (Jr accidentally called him dad, he was very sleepy, and Leo just went with it)

Despite Warren and Hypno being his enemies, he went over to them for sexuality advice (they were the only openly gay people he knew of at the time) and they were surprisingly nice and gave him good advice. (he once saw them at a pride parade, it was cool tho)

He still will dress up in anything (he slays in dresses).

although his fashion sense is terrible and his brothers (Donnie and Mikey) and April help him choose clothes.

Donnie:

He can breathe underwater like normal softshells, but the oxygen is absorbed in the throat instead, so he has to either swallow the water or breathe it into his lungs ( it doesn't hurt the lungs in any way, though he will have to cough it up afterwards)

it is more of a last resort tho as transitioning between water and air is uncomfortable

breathing water doesn't get him enough oxygen for the body, so like softshells he has to come up for air at some point.

hates people touching his shell (even more after the invasion), but it is ok if it is his brothers shielding him.

his friendship with cassandra is like :

he is a growing hungry boi, he will eat anything mikey cooks (mostly because he cares about his littlest bro and want him to feel good about what he makes, secondly because he is growing, a lot. boi is tall af)

tried making his own plushies (with the help of mikey) and knows a bit of knitting or sowing (it's not the best but he is learning)

So in case you haven't heard, there's a really good Fangan that's been dropping episodes every weekend called Danganronpa: (He)Artless Deceit. It's only got 4 episodes, each around 20-30 minutes but so far it's been an incredible experience. Below the cut are my opinions on the characters based on introductions and predictions for their possible role in the story. I may make a seperate post for theories on the mastermind when the prologue is completed. Spoilers below!!

So first let's cover our protagonist, the Ultimate Rizzler herself, Akira Hayasaka. Firstly, I absolutely love that she has such a distinct, vivid personality that really contrasts her against other protagonists. Also, her double talent is interesting, especially seeing as one is so dangerous and criminal. I think she'll end up having some kind of solidarity with Kyouran as they have criminal talents and I think she's set up to foil Izanami, as Akira's talent and Izanami's beliefs conflict. I absolutely adore her interactions with Tomoya, they're such a funny duo.

Speaking of Tomoya, he's definitely in my top five favourite characters. He's just so funny, his sprites are over the top and you just can't help but love him despite his huge ego. I've seen theories that he and Shion switched talents, which actually sounds pretty plausible, as I'd imagine an Ultimate Therapist to avoid huge conflicts with others. If you ask me, it sounds like he needs to be recieving therapy more than administering it. Either way, it's fun to bully him.

Rei Fukuno is such an interesting character, I would've expected her to be an easy target given her blindness but her personality definitely shows that she'd be more likely to be a culprit than a victim, after all who'd suspect the small, weak blind girl with a useful talent that has potential to be used against the cast?

I don't have particularly strong feelings for Takeshi? It may be that his design doesn't appeal much to me, but his personality depicted in the wiki makes me like him a little more. I hope to see more of that caring side of him.

Otome is a character I sympathise with, I know how easy it can be to lose your temper and act irrationally grumpy when you're tired. I predict that she'll be an early death, I think a manga artist's execution would be cool to see though, so hoping for culprit. Now that she doesn't have to worry about deadlines, I can see her chilling out and coming out of her shell throughout the story.

I absolutely LOVE Itsumi, her design, her personality it's just... whhdiwjwhw. I feel so bad for her, dealing with nasty comments from strangers. If she dies I will ugly cry hard on the cold hard floor. Also, where can I get that hoodie??? I want one so bad.

Satoru is so suspiscious but I can't help but love him. He's just like me fr honestly. Given his wiki bio, he seems to be an entertaining person to listen to, so I think he'll hold some sway in the trials. Plus, if you've watched the trailers you'd know that he has one of the famous "unhinged" sprites. I think he has potential for a bigger role later on.

Honestly Shion is so cute and I love her personality. I think there'll be tension between the twins as I think their parents are divorced? Either way I think she has a higher possibility of dying than Tomoya.

I absolutely love Kiyoshi, he's so cute and I love the puppets. As much as I want him to survive, I think an Ultimate Puppeteer execution would be amazing and I would cry if he died. Like a lot of other people I believe that he might be trans, which may be why he dislikes his feminine appearance. If he is, it will probably play a part in the story, perhaps in a motive like the secret one?

Katsuhiko is such a fun character, sure he's the "sensible" one but how easy to annoy personality will definitely lead to shennanigans, probably led by Hideyoshi.

I love delinquents who become better people, so I love Hideyoshi. I think he and Katsuhiko will become the new Ishimondo which probably means that they'll meet a grizzly fate. Either way, hope to see more of him.

Izanami is just so HgauwhshaiJJuHRauiwuw. She's so pretty and she looks like a fairytale princess???? I think she's already being set up to be an antagonist, she dislikes "sinners" and seems to be suspiscious of Akira already. I think she's going to be a culprit, possibly killing Kyouran as he's another character I imagine she'd dislike.

Speaking of, Kyouran is probably my favourite at the moment. I love Robin Hood style characters and there's definitely more to him than meets the eye. Plus, his design is super cool and he reminds me of a victorian era thief.

Chiemi is also another favourite of mine, I can't believe how cute and kind she is! I can definitely see her being best friends with everyone, I see her as a middle game victim, maybe chapter 3? I think her optimism will eventually lead to her death.

I'm gonna be honest, I don't like Yumeo. I thought I would, but I like cold characters, not rude ones. The way he treated Tomoya was terrible. I may eventually come to like him after development but so far, nope.

Chou is the last one I think, and I love her too! I think her nad temper will definitely lead to her being an early culprit. I think she's super interesting!

This time it's Headcanons and dynamics I think fit the characters. My girl Mica is underappreciated me thinks, so I'm gonna fix that.

Reminder that these are HEADCANONS! They aren't actually canon to the characters themselves, and this is just information about the character's personality and background that I think fits them. If anyone wants to add theirs, feel free, because I love reading peoples headcanons and comparing notes! :3

Fair warning, the last two of Jules' headcanons are a bit heavier, so trigger warning for SH and dysphoria mentions! There are also Hemophobia and Emetophobia mentions as well

Jules headcanons;

✧ T4T, or just an overall preference for a Trans/Genderqueer partner, pansexual possibly

✧ Has a pronounced accent when he's angry, excited, singing or acting. Like he definitely has one, but it comes out more when he's being expressive if that makes sense

✧ Definitely looks back at his old clothes from his emo phase and almost cringes because of how bad the style he used to dress in. He just fixes everything up with other absolutely ruined clothes and makes them better.

✧ Cleaned and donated his binders for sure! I feel like he'd deep clean them and everything, gives em away to other trans teens/young adults in need

✧ Studed gauges, spiky earrings, just.. out there and absurd jewlery that somehow goes so well with his outfits

✧ Was definitely a cowboy almost every year for Halloween growing up.

✧ Active protester against waste dumping! Very vocal about it too! Even makes awareness posts online and such! Made a GoFundMe to help protect land, especially indigenous land or ranches!!

✧ When he dances, it's not just generic or free style dancing. He's like.. expressing his emotions and soul with it, letting his body move without thinking about it. Like Goth dancing would be, but more expressive and fluid and just overall freeing if that makes sense

✧ Still finds glitter everywhere because he's probably spilled some as a child when doing arts and crafts. They're a very artistic person, me thinks.

✧ Definitely had his nipples tattooed on instead. You can't tell me they wouldn't find a really weird, goth or just overall funky design for a tattoo to replace their nipples after post op healing. Something like a skull, or a cowboy hat.

✧ Loves any kind of animal. Doesn't have a preference. Probably somehow tamed a bearded dragon when they were younger?? And they just. They just had it as a pet for a while. His parents never found out for a while either?? Until he just brought it out like "hey look! This is my new pet!". They also screamed the first time the bearded dragon shot blood at him from it's eyes. (Yes they can do that. Yes it's weird. And yes it's also cool)

✧ Plans on getting tattoos on his surgery scars. Animal skulls or something like that, a mix of alternative/goth and western.

✧ Probably had an unhealthy way of coping with dysphoria. Binded a lot more than he should, stuff like that.

✧ more than likely has a few scars from sh when struggling with self image and dysphoria. He's been clean for years now, and he most likely got tattoos over the scars because they accept that part of them, and they aren't ashamed of it

some Mica headcanons because my girl is swag and deserves some recognition!!

✦ Genderfluid, any pronouns. Doesn't even care if you call her an "it" (probably takes it as a compliment)

✦ Used to be irrationally scared of horses until she met Jules

✦ Prefers reptiles or arachnids as a pet, but would totally foster black cats. Most likely pagan/wiccan

✦ didn't talk to Jules for a week because he showed her the bearded dragon defense mechanism. She fainted.

✦ Hemophobia + emetophobia (the fear of blood & vomit)

✦ either has the nicest nicknames or the most rancid god awful nicknames for her friends.

✦ Drives a hearse! Decorates it for festive stuff. Also named it (She'd name it something like Salaman or Pamantha just because it'd be funny)

✦ Mild scoliosis and chronic back pain probably. Has to wear a back brace for it

✦ Enjoys costume design! Makes her own clothes from scratch

✦ Supports small businesses/creators/artists. She has a lot of skincare products from indigenous businesses to support them.

✦ Very vocal about protesting against waste dumping and using land for things that'll harm nature in general! Goes to protests with Jules. Even has social media platforms to help spread information and stop waste disposal on indigenous lands

✦ Supportive of Jules getting into his culture! Very interested in learning about customs and traditions. Also goes to festivities to be his emotional support friend

✦ Was a theater kid in middle and high school, started her alternative phase in 6th grade(she boasts about this to Julien sometimes just because)

So, April is the first one to meet Casey and brings him to the turtles for help. I am working on a comic book script for this event to try to learn how to write comics, so hopefully I'll be able to show it on here soon!

April is 15 years old. She's super into horror media and video games, and has known the turtles for about a year. Raph met her first and she considers him her BEST friend, but the other turtles are all a very close second. The two of them play video games online a lot even if they don't see one another in person that day, and they're working on a horror game together. She is kind of the opposite of Raph and Mikey - they both dream of being normal kids and being able to be normal and live around other people, but she hopes and wishes her mom would somehow fall in love with their dad, pull a brady bunch to fuse their families together, and give her unlimited Turtle Little Brother Time in their world instead of having to return to the human world. Donnie is teaching her some Turtle First Aid (as well as what Human First Aid he knows) and the two of them watch How It's Made and do cute things together. Leo and Mikey are both teaching her martial arts - Leo because he thinks it would make their dad proud if he did a good job teaching her (despite Splinter currently not knowing she exists,) Mikey because he's wracked with anxiety and has terror-visions of her being defenseless against Bad Guys. (Raph does not feel like he has to teach her anything, they're just friends who have fun together and are making fun stuff together and he really feels like he needs a friend who doesn't... depend on him for anything, poor boy.)

Casey is 16 and he's had a very rough life so far. Meeting Casey (and by extension meeting April, who introduces herself to him this way) is like a thirty-second process from Splinter going "Oh no a human" to "Oh no, a human THAT I MUST ADOPT, POOR BOY." (He does ask if April needs to be adopted, which adds fuel to the "April wants to Parent Trap Splinter and her Mom" fire, but she politely declines FOR NOW) Casey is VERY into the Fallout games and pretty explicitly models his way of dressing/weapons of choice/general aesthetic after Fallout New Vegas, which the turtle boys are too young to have played but April knows what's up. All four of the turtles feel incredibly obligated to teach Casey how to fight and take care of himself, especially when they find out that he's on the run from the same apocalyptic death cult that mutated them* mutated their dad into a rat** and chased them from Florida to the sewers of New York***. Casey likes all of the turtles equally, but has a special attachment to April, Donnie, and Mikey for nebulous Genders Reasons that he is not equipped to deal with at this time.

(Splinter has fallen into the trap of Making Shit Up when he's not sure of the answer or is ashamed of the truth and despite having good intentions he has caused bonkers problems for his boys, mentally)

(also: Leo's decision to train April started with Leo going "Hey, Dad, GIRLS can be ninjas too, right?" and Splinter, Trans But Awkward, Firmly Stating, "ANYONE can be a girl." which did not really answer the question but Leo decided it would work as permission until he did a grand reveal of Girl Ninja April)

(Splinter then spent a couple of months trying to State To The Room that any of his sons can be a girl if they want and they can just tell him if they're a girl, that's normal and fine, just let him know, he has girl names lined up if anybody's interested)

(Donnie is Not A Boy either but he's too caught up in "Thinks He Might Not Be Alive" to put too much thought into it right now. give him a few years)

Why do you and other jp players despise twst en sm? Other than small character features, I don't get it. (jp player)

I have a whole large post that compiles stuff I personally noticed but there's tons more. What you call "small character features" are actually pretty big things for people who care about these characters or relate to them.

By making Cater make fun of Riddle while he was crying after his overblot, they took away Cater's empathy which is a very important trait of his. By censoring his flirtiness, they took away his coping mechanism for feeling inadequate and unlovable.

By taking away the twins' violent tendencies, they stole about half their personalities and why they are so loved. They took away the conflicting natures they show to others vs those they care about. By making Floyd nothing but a meme, they took away the depth in a character that many would argue shows clear signs of being neurodivergent.

By taking away or hiding the fact that Jamil is a servant, they changed his entire arc from wanting to be free to essentially bitching about being asked to watch over a friend. The power imbalance is important because it affected Jamil on many levels (see: people under the influence of Snake Whisper calling him master, and master being also the first word he would teach his parrot – twst en changed that to simply teaching the parrot to say hello which lacks any sort of personality). A lot of what his parents say doesn't make sense either if you introduce him as a family friend rather than a servant, and that's not talking about the pre-release mishap of making them cousins in promo materials.

By taking away Epel being called cute, his arc goes from finding out cuteness and strength aren't opposites and you can be both to him being a brat unhappy with his looks who suddenly decides it doesn't matter how he looks. Similar but lacks the punch.

By making Vil use gendered language and emphasize manliness, they took away a core part of his character that focuses on breaking gender stereotypes and traditions that are restrictive to either sex or gender.

By making Trey's parents yell at him instead of Riddle's mom, and by mellowing out Riddle's mom's abuse as much as they did, many EN-only fans view Riddle as a spoiled brat who wants everyone to listen to him just because his mom was a little strict.

By making Sebek rude to his seniors and always put everyone but Malleus down, also calling Malleus exclusively by his first name, they took away a core part of his character and what made his interracial origins so compelling because there's no longer any conflict in his values.

To the censorship point, I'm by no means an advocate for forced representation and I don't believe that every fictional work has to have characters of every race, gender, and sexuality. I am, however, a firm believer in keeping characters as they were originally written. If a character is written as gay or bi, erasing that is wrong. If a character is written as trans or nb, erasing that is wrong. Same goes for straight and cis characters. My problem with twst en in this regard is that it erases a lot of this. It's not just Cater flirting with Vil or Epel or paintings or Eliza or her guards or Trey or whoever else that man flirted with, it's also nearly every mention of Vil being beautiful (they usually get replaced by handsome or cool) or Epel being cute, it's the way Jamil blushes when Kalim compliments him, it's the way Rook often hints at Trey and Riddle being together even if they're not, it's Silver saying Vil is who he thinks of when he hears the word beauty, it's Idia thinking Silver is extremely pretty, it's Lilia going out of his way to be cute, it's all that and so much more. Cater is just the most blatant example of this.

Censorship also applies to other things though. The violence and darkness of Twisted Wonderland is what makes these characters dear to a lot of us. Riddle's mother is abusive and extremely controlling as well as violent. Trey had no childhood because he was a parent to his younger siblings and until he discovered his magic, his whole life was controlled by the family bakery. Cater's sisters together with the moving made him believe he was unworthy of being loved on a personal level. Ruggie's struggled to survive his entire life. Azul was severely bullied since he was very young. The twins hinted multiple times at murdering us, Jade hinted at cannibalism. They also both had near-death experiences during Halloween under the sea. Jamil was forced to put himself down because his life and happiness were treated as less important than Kalim's. Vil got systematically dehumanized and physically and mentally bullied for putting in effort and looking a certain way... If you censor the darkness in these stories, they are no longer the same characters and it is no longer the same story.

Side note here: Twst en removed Sam's makeup supposedly due to racist stereotypes but then they changed the name of Jamil's unique from Snake Whisper to Snake Charmer... which is a racist stereotype... so yeah, they clearly don't care about actually not being racist besides the low-hanging fruit of virtue signaling.

There's more if you wanna dig deeper. But aside from all of these, there's also the constant inconsistencies in translation, the translation team clearly not caring enough to translate catchphrases the same way each time, the oftentimes blatantly wrong translation, the horrendous new English names for things that already had English names in the first place, the visual censorship on Sam (do not use the voodoo argument, Sam has no connection to voodoo and his makeup is purely decorative as stated in Magical Archives), as well as the fact that as soon as twst en was announced, even the original twst started back-tracking on some of their earlier content. For example, despite Cater saying in his school uniform story that he wanted to date Vil, his union birthday suddenly has him claiming he wants Vil as a brother. This is especially interesting because Cater was the first character twst en gave a birthday banner to.

And going even more meta, the pace at which they release events is horrible. Being F2P in twst en is extremely hard unless you have the luck of the gods. They are rushing out too much content all at once and the overall quality of the game suffers for it.

I just felt slightly uncomfortable when, in a review where you deservedly pointed out how some jokes in Adventure Time repeat tropes that hurt trans women, fat people, disabled people etc. you yourself made jokes that repeat tropes that hurt adopted siblings.

Hi anon. I did get a bit defensive, definitely. Let me give you a more genuine answer.

So yeah, textually Finn and Jake are adoptive siblings. This is so far mostly played for humour - Jake's dad is a very silly caricature of a father, the rest of his family have not yet been introduced at this point (I don't think we've met Jerome) - but I think it's absolutely fair to say the dynamic they're going for with Jake's relationship to Finn is 'cool older brother'. It is kind of a failing of media literacy that I didn't pick up on that, thinking of them more as 'bros' in the figurative sense (very close friends). And I can see how that could make joking about Finn and Jake's relationship feel tasteless.

We could talk about the thin line between fictional portrayals of close sibling relationships and romantic ones (c.f. Azula bedroom scene). Bearing in mind that we're talking here about a cartoon boy and a cartoon dog - Finn and Jake are symbols. They invoke various associations based on the needs of the narrative. Trying to read it based on real human relationships is at some point going to founder against the fact that nothing about this show makes sense in 21st century human terms.

So I was reacting to a story about two boys who live together in a treehouse, do everything together such that they're basically treated as a unit, and constantly display a great deal of emotional sensitivity towards each other, which often draws parallels between their relationship and established romantic ones (for example, the gladiator episode, or the 'do the thing I like' in S4E16). Notably they don't really tend to show Jake in a 'sibling who takes on parental role' light either. I certainly don't think the show intends a romantic reading as the primary one by any means lmao, the way the show indicates romantic relationships is not subtle, but I found it amusing that it gives grounds for that reading at all.

But like sure. I don't mean to treat adoptive relationships dismissively. They are precisely as meaningful as 'blood' relationships and I'll keep in mind that it's an incest joke if I ever feel like making that kind of joke again. (which I probably will, because that just makes it funnier.)

That said, I do think the narrow focus on 'social justice' criticism as my only approach, particularly in the 2018-era liveblogs was... a limiting frame, to put it mildly. It's not that I think I was wrong, exactly, to find things like the early Ice King plots tedious. Princess Bubblegum for example becomes a much more interesting character once they start playing up the sinister, tyrannical angle and drop the 'love interest' frame.

But there's more going in this work of animation on that it would have been interesting to talk about. And having seen the alternative in the painfully didactic cartoons that have become the norm... well, I regret worrying so much about frigging Adventure Time of all things lol

ANYWAYS,,, on the off chance that you do somehow remember a teen messaging you on here and you giving kind words back that really helped me, I just wanted to pop in as the 23 year old I am today and kinda just say thank you for being kind to a stranger online :) not only am I out and living as a trans man (been on T for little over 2 years now!!!), I have an amazing boyfriend, I’m medicated for adhd now and on an antidepressant and I feel more mentally healthy than I ever had before!!! I’m possibly autistic too which explains a lot of my past troubles with people but haven’t gotten formally diagnosed yet.

to those who have an issue w/drag (& tbh, queer/nonconforming people in general)

TL;DR: please don't follow me if you are the above. I'd be supporting ignorance. Here's my explanation.

Brief background (on me & my stance): I was born AFAB, to parents who, for most of my childhood, either took no stance or a liberal stance in conversations that became politicized/publicized by the media. My school didn't talk about politics until President Obama was elected (& ofc his election was seen as a historic, positive moment). Anyway, no one talked about sexuality, biological sex, or gender identity--all of which are different, sometimes overlapping topics.

Then my mom happened to have a young student who had 2 dads. I was confused. When they'd hug or kiss (nothing graphic, just regular couple stuff), I felt...weird. No, not aroused OR disgusted--I was maybe 8 at the time, anyway. But I was definitely not used to seeing or hearing about gay people. Whenever that good ol' scene where 2 sexy college girls kiss to appease a bunch of boys came on the TV, my mom would roll her eyes. When 2 men would kiss in a different scene, my dad would make an excuse and leave. Long story short, until I literally Googled what it was to be queer, I didn't understand what I had seen. I'd learn that my mom supported all queer people (going as far as to publicly support a student's efforts to transition in high school) and my dad, who is still learning, grew up exposed to extremely heteronormative ideals.

Now we get to my identities.

I started to question my sexuality at 10, but I wasn't "sure"* that I was bisexual/pansexual (I don't mind either term; yes, I "can" be attracted to trans people) until I was 12. Unfortunately, my parents initially tried to ignore my realization. They didn't want to talk about it. But I had friends who came out at the same time. (I was also a very salty high schooler.) So I kept pushing and pushing for the discussion, because I had a right to be heard. I had a right to be myself and not lie about who I was. My parents had always talked about how I should be proud to be a smart Black woman, so...I ran with that. I am lucky to have a family who (finally) accepts my sexuality.

Again, I'm AFAB. I don't mind my genitalia. I hate my body, but that (for me) is tied to my mental health, as I have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (I inherited a disposition to this), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (the result of several environmental and self-imposed factors), and Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (due to some trauma experienced outside my home). I have thought about having traditionally-male genitalia, but I don't think I personally need it to be happy. However, I acknowledge that this is just how I feel, and it doesn't take away from how others feel.

I didn't even think much about my own gender until the last year or so. I only knew that I had always been unhappy with my social life. I currently have a badass handful of buddies who I love SO MUCH, but I still sometimes feel...wrong. When I look in the mirror, I don't just feel ugly. I don't think I look human. I hung out with boys throughout elementary school and I (mostly via the CW and Disney Channel) was exposed to a lot of what some call the "male gaze". For example, I remember all the shows that featured a girl (usually the male characters' crush(es)) getting splashed with water--enough so her petite hourglass form would show through her then-transparent clothes. So I had an idea of what beauty was. Somehow, I also had an idea of what being cool/handsome (my words for "beautiful in a masculine way" back then) was: toned muscles, the ability to intimidate anyone, wearing tight clothes, etc. Anyway, I started school early, meaning that until maybe the end of middle school, I was always shorter than everyone else. I didn't mind being called cute all the time, until my friends were getting asked out as teenagers. Suddenly, I wanted to be seen as attractive. I ended up basing my self-image on how many people had crushes on me (which appeared to be zero, according to how many people turned me down). My point is, I believed that I had to be pretty for men. Then I realized that I liked women TOO, which irritated me because even when I came out, it saddened me that I still wasn't getting asked out (despite me supposedly having TWO TIMES the chance to find love, in my mind). In the end...I found that I identify as nonbinary. I'm agender, possibly genderfluid, because I don't understand OR want to conform to society's standards for gender (at least, in the USA). (Also, a bunch of the people I had crushes on years ago were actually insensitive jerks, but that's not the point.)

Elon Musk has said one thing that I might actually agree with. Said loosely, he asked why people are bothering to look so closely at gender when we claim that Western Civilization has come so far in terms of gender roles. Why DO people have a problem if someone who is AMAB wears a dress or a skirt? Kilts are part of Celtic culture, for both men and women. The Ancient/Classical Greek civilization that is so revered by so many countries had a garment called the chiton, a knee-length tunic worn by both men and women. Plenty of cultures throughout human history have worn ceremonial and/or optional makeup. Why DO some Americans still take issue with men teaching kids in elementary school? Is that any worse than a woman becoming President of the United States?

I was inspired to write this because of all the recent ideological and legislative attacks on human rights, specifically those of trans people and/or drag performers. I thought about the friends I have who identify as trans, and who have expressed their joy at discovering their identity. They are so relieved and happy and they have the most beautiful smiles when they detail their journeys. Their happiness isn't hurting anyone. I also thought about drag in general. I haven't been to a live drag show (yet), but I've seen the show Legendary (a dance show featuring drag, among other elements of queer culture) as well as the Netflix documentary Disclosure (a film about how trans people have historically been depicted in media). Drag is art, and for some, it's a lifestyle. It might be a kink or fetish for some people, in the same way that intercrural sex or lingerie might be. What it is NOT is a way that people commonly commit crimes--as the media has often claimed in the past, by showing AMAB "transvestite" serial killers wearing dresses to seduce their victims. It is NOT encouraging children to have sex at horribly young ages. And as many have explained, a drag queen is most definitely no more dangerous than a person (of ANY gender) purchasing an automatic weapon. If anything, seeing someone in drag perform can be an awesome learning experience for kids. They'll be exposed to a marginalized community that they may find themselves as part of as an adult. They won't grow up like I did, feeling like something is wrong with them just because they didn't know their identity existed.

I am not perfect and I do not claim to be. I had to do a lot of research to learn what I know about various communities. I still research online and ask (thoughtful) questions when members of these communities allow it. Until this year, I had no idea that some nonbinary people choose to get top surgery and/or begin hormone therapy because they like the way it helps others view them as more androgynous individuals. I did not know how much hormone therapy could cost (it's a heartbreaking reality, considering the meaning behind the whole process). I did not know that drag, something that I always saw as a fabulous form of self-expression and pure happiness, would be demonized by so many people.

I don't think this IS an opinion, but uh:

Gender Identities: woman, man, agender, nonbinary, two-spirit (term exclusive to Indigenous North Americans), etc.

Sexualities: gay, straight, queer, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, etc.

Sex: AFAB/female, AMAB/male, intersex.

People who are transgender are absolutely valid, whether or not they get and/or disclose their thoughts on personal sexual reassignment surgery. The term transgender is difficult to evaluate as a word because it's somewhere between gender identity and sex. In English, we say that someone identifies as trans, but someone who is a transwoman, for example, is someone AMAB (or possibly intersex) who identifies as a woman. But again, these people still exist and deserve just as much respect as anyone else.

No one hates people who grew up unaware of the queer community. The problem are those who hate queer people for simply being different--in essence, for those who pose a threat to the fantasy of a forever-heteronormative society that promotes unrealistic ideals.

*stuff in parentheses includes terms that you may not agree with, but it's how the mainstream media and groups I've interacted with define certain concepts. I'm sorry if the phrasing isn't perfect--despite my Master's and Bachelor's in various sections of the English Department, choosing the correct words to define feelings is still difficult.

The Little Things I Love About ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE

Just like the one I did for PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH, and just like the one I did for STRANGE WORLD, here's a little list of particular little details I loved in a detail-packed... Like, literally jampacked movie... SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE:

So far, I have only seen this movie once all the way through in theaters, caught multiple sections over and over at my movie theater job, and again in full on Blu-ray once. I've watched and rewatched sections since, always finding cool stuff. I may revisit the post and update it, too, like I did w/ the previous ones.

Also, MASSIVE SPOILERS ahead... Just in case you still haven't seen this months-old movie...

Much like the first SPIDER-VERSE... Tons of stuff to catch in the glitching opening logos. Logo/design p0rn aaaaall around.

There's already a lot to love in the opening Medieval Vulture attack set-piece, but my favorite detail? As an Italian-American? "Ciao, ragazza!" Complete with the parchment paper script "Bye, girl!" accompanying it. Any elementary school-age kid watching this now knows a little Italian, that's cool!

Lyla's first scene in the movie. Whichever version, too, whether it's the fist-bump or the selfie... I love how she just glitches and zips in and out, while Miguel keeps asking her in vain to call for back-up. Just an out-of-nowhere display of what kind of quirky relationship these two have...

Many have written about the scenes of Gwen and her father, Captain George Stacy, and how they hit very close to home. In that, they perfectly mirror some folks' experiences with coming out. Myself included, whether it's Miles or Gwen... It's even more effective with Gwen, because there are a lot of not-so-subtle hints that she could be a trans girl. (i.e. the dad having a trans flag on his uniform, Gwen having a "protect trans kid" flag, her room turning into trans flag pastel colors when she reconnects with her father at the end of the movie, etc.) I feel it's twice as hard-hitting in the opening action sequence because Captain Stacy has no idea the white-and-pink Spider-Woman is his daughter, loathes Spider-Woman for not-unfounded reasons (he's rightfully upset that Peter Parker is dead) but is taking it way too far (revenge territory), and he's also a cop. Here's this girl trying to reason with a hardened gun-wielding tough guy, who even fires the gun, prompting Gwen to remove the mask... And all the little complexities in the animated acting on George's face, the shock of his daughter being Spider-Woman, mixed with his grief over Parker's death and his sheer anger... It's maybe a minute or two, but goddamn did these animators go off. That's what anchors these movies amidst all the nerd/reference-stuff, spectacle, and dynamic changing art styles.

And to elaborate on this... This is basically a movie about a queer kid running off, without a home, while another one tries to find their people and be with them... Not prepared for the gatekeeping that's ahead... and some of us queers either experience something like those specific things or have a feeling of not belonging. (I also really dig how Jessica Drew is almost like a surrogate mother for Gwen, a parent of sorts who takes her in after showing her father who she is. Almost, as her protectiveness soon starts to wear off and gives way to sarcastic coldness after Gwen pays Miles a visit.) And the little nuances of both of their struggles trying to make it in this truly "elite" Spider-Society. It works perfectly through either Miles' lens or Gwen's.

Lots of graphic design and logos in that short convenience store scene, too. Lots for someone like me to look for.

The Spot seems to have linework going on inside him, of his anatomy and structure... Not dissimilar to the Xerography process used by Disney for animated productions from 1960 to 1985, and how the process overriding the clean-up animation process meant that you saw lots of rough linework, sketches, and planning inside of the characters. Like the rawness of the drawings preserved in the finished films. That technique is often paid homage to in other animated works, such as Tomm Moore's Irish triptych films that he did for Cartoon Saloon.

Much was written about, especially because one of the trailers showed this gag, Rio Morales snapping her finger upon hearing that Miles got a lower grade in Spanish class. A little after that, while Jeff is speaking, the look on her face. How utterly INSULTED she is- Again, just, ooh, great animated acting all around.

The first universe Spot visits, love that it's very 2D-looking and very, *very* comic book, a hint of pulp and Art Deco and '60s modern rolled into one... before giving us Venomverse (oh I'm sorry, SUMC) and LEGO.

Much of the Morales' rooftop party scene is just jam-packed to the moon and back with all these little writing nuances, tying in all this stuff about being a teen who is hiding something, reasoning with one's well-meaning but very controlling parents, all the humor and drama that stems from that. All that awkwardness, the embarrassment, how the guests play off of all of that, etc.

Miles pursuing The Spot whilst trying to talk to him... I mean, the entire Mumbattan sequence alone mops the floor w/ maybe 95% of superhero movies made in the last 5 years, but... This scene in particular, where the two are flying through a bunch of intricately-designed and planned buildings full of people with all these swooping camera angles- GO HARD they did.

Hobie's universe particularly referencing the ransom note letterforms that made up the cover of the iconic Sex Pistols album NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS, HERE'S THE SEX PISTOLS. They leaned *hard* on early punk from the '70s, more so than any other era, and that's so damn cool.

The subtle animated acting from Gwen during Miguel's warning to Miles about disrupting canon. All the inner-conflict over believing in it or not. And even before that, too, particularly in the aftermath of the Mumbattan Alchemax building collapsing onto the bridge.

And during that whole scene, as the different Spiders start to surround Miles, I like how Hobie is more turned to the side than facing Miles directly, unlike the other Spiders. That's just seconds before it's made clear that Hobie is on Miles' side.

The super-widescreen, Panavision-esque aspect ratio change when - during the whole Spider Society chase - Miles lands on Widow and is confronted by Web-Slinger. Really channeling the spaghetti Westerns, even if that bit has been done before, its use here - very clever.

"SNITCH!"

Miles' smirk when he begins to use his electric charge power to knock Miguel off of him, right before he's about to tell him - and by extension everyone who ever doubted him or told him he can't do what's right or what he desires - off.

The "Go Home Machine" literally being an elaborate spider, itself, inside a nest. Everything, right down to the machinery, all spider-themed. Simply going ALL OUT. Also that scanner that Miguel angrily rips out of the console... What a hilariously excessive work of art that thing is, and we only really see it for like 5 seconds.

Like I said, will likely add more, and this probably read more like yet another review of this film that I really, really love. I apologize for that, lol.

Trans Guy Tips #8: Testosterone HRT Changes PART 2

1. You will notice your fat redistributes a LOT. like they say this but you might be like "but what exactly does that really mean?" like I felt.

Well basically, for me I was average weight but had slight chub, and feminine thighs, hips, thick love handles & pooofy huge fat baby cheeks that people always blamed their misgendering of me on.

All of those things about me disappeared recently.

I am now a way more lanky guy, much more than I used to be.

My already grasshopper long legs are now powerful and manly, muscular, and so different in a way I can't even describe, just different. Even my mom pointed out my legs changed noticebly!

I have zero love handles anymore as of these few months, which I have never experienced in my life, and my gut which was huge is still there now too, but is now a reasonable unbloated size. I miss my cute round tummy but I like having a flatter stomach too, either is cool with me!!

I have no extra jiggly fat anywhere on my body, it feels more "solid" and less "loose" if that makes any sense. I tested, it doesn't jiggle and shake loosely when I move my arm to the left & right for instance, or my leg.

I have also grown two full inches in height since beginning T.

I was 5'8" when I began and I am now 5'10". This is so fucking dope because my whole life I said I wanted to be at least 5'10" and I'd be happy. Well I did it!!! *High-fives myself*

These are due to bone changes, which are caused because I started Testosterone when I was barely 18 years old, not finished with my female-born body's puberty yet, (which ends later on than you think!) which causes your body to basically welcome the sweet embrace of Testosterone and will give you things like;

1. Increased height by at least an inch or multiple, rarely can increase by a lot in some cases it's been rumoured. I experienced two inches of growth so far, nut I'm only a little over a year on T so far. The maximum span of Testosterone's effects is said to be 5 years. I did a series of height calculators based on both female & male settings, and using my parent's heights, and it said if I was only female e.g. untransitioned, I would probably grow to 5'11" by about 25 years old or so (makes sense, my dad is TALLL.). I did the calculations again with the male setting, e.g. with Testosterone in my system, and it said I could grow to 6'1".

HOOOOLY SHITTT my dream height wtffff

It may be incorrect.... it may be just some stupid internet site...

but if it works, I'll let you know, and report my findings again to you guys.

2. Bigger. shoe. size. Your feet will IMMEDIATELY rush to outgrow your shoes by about two to four sizes on average for most men. Prepare for your old shoes to be sold, trashed/recycled, given or kept as a keepsake 😆😭

3. An adam's apple! Yes, you can fucking grow an adam's apple. It's legit. It will look either a little smaller than a cis man's, or sometimes the same, kind of like beards.

4. Along with the adam's apple, comes even deeper vocal range! Yes I said it. If you start T young (As long as you are 1000% sure it is right for you!!!!) you will get a slightly or sometimes quite deeper vocal pitch than some other trans men who started later, whose vocal cords were used to their positions. Again, every trans man's experience is different, so maybe you may not even experience much of this at all, but it is very possible and likely!

5. Bone changes that are majour, such as facial changes to the very structure of your face, not just the fat. I'm talking your Skeleton. Fucking. Moves, Bro..

I believe I am experiencing it, as my face is so drastically different and I have random bruised feeling in my face sometimes. If anyone knows, feel free to add!!

6. Same bone changes can happen in small but noticeable ways like that throughout the rest of your body. Prepare for majour shape changes. I got huge shoulders and chest, while my hips narrowed.

For reference, I am 1 year and 3 months on Testosterone now as of posting this, I began April 08 2021. It is so fascinating, and I loooove who I am becoming looking in the mirror!!! I finally look like the me in my soul. 💜💜💜🏳️‍⚧️
