September 22nd, 2019. Today was the first official day of Fall. It used to be your favorite time of the year. Nothing made you happier than the colder weather, the leaves changing colors, and of course Halloween.
That was all tainted now by memories of him.
It was all your fault really. Your friends told you not to get involved with him. Told you it would end in nothing but heartbreak. You really wished you would’ve listened to them. It would have definitely saved you a lot of heartache.
You can’t believe you wasted 3 years of your life with him. 3 years you would never get back. The only good thing about any of it is the lessons you learned from the failed relationship.
They say it takes 2 people to make a relationship fail. You don’t think that’s the case this time. You were totally and 100% devoted to him and making it work. You thought he was as well. You thought wrong.
September 3rd, 2015
You really hated going to the clubs. Why go out when you could be on your couch huddled under a plethora of blankets and binge watching your newest obsession, Schitt’s Creek?
But, unfortunately you had promised your friends you would stop being a hermit and rejoin society for the evening.
So you put on some black leggings, a long burgundy sweater, and some black ankle boots and head to your friends. You decided to walk since it was only a couple of blocks from your apartment.
The smile couldn’t leave your face if you wanted it to on your little walk. The air was chilly, Fall was definitely almost here. Boston was the most beautiful place during Fall. You couldn’t wait for the hayrides, getting lost in a corn maze, and delicious hot apple cider.
You finally reach the club and head inside to find your friends. It takes you no time at all to spot them at a table near the back. You head to the bar to order a drink before heading to your girls.
It’s crowded tonight so you find the only open spot and squeeze your way through and attempt to flag down the busy bartender.
After a few minutes of failed attempts you decide to sit on the stool and patiently wait until he comes over to you.
“Having trouble getting his attention, sweetheart?”
You turn your head to the left and you momentarily forget how to speak. This man attempting to start a conversation with you is beautiful. You’d say handsome but that’s not nearly good enough. He has amazing blue eyes that you feel yourself getting lost in. He chuckles when he realizes the effect he has on you. It shakes you out of your trance.
“Sorry, my brain quit working there for a minute. Yes, I can’t seem to get his attention.”
He smiles and takes a sip of what you assume is whiskey in his glass. He gives you a quick wink before turning his attention to the bartender. “Hey, Earl! This gorgeous lady here would like a drink.”
You blush furiously. He just called you gorgeous. When he looks like the walking version of Adonis.
Earl comes right over. “Sorry dear. Super busy tonight. What can I get for you?”
Still being in a Fall mood you decide on an Angry Orchard.
He nods and goes to get it for you.
“I never would have pegged you as a hard cider girl.” The beautiful mystery man says as he not-so-discreetly checks you out.
“I guess I’m full of surprises. Thanks though for getting his attention. Are you guys friends? He came over here right away.”
“Nah, I just spend a lot of money here so he never makes me wait. I guess you could say I’m at the top of his priority list.” He gives you a heart stopping smile when Earl comes back over and sets your Cider in front of you.
“That’ll be 4.50 hun.”
As you’re reaching for your wallet, the mysterious man speaks up again. “Put it on my tab Earl. In fact, put whatever else she drinks tonight on my tab, too.”
Earl nods and goes to tend to one of the many other patrons. You look wide eyed over at the stranger. “Thank you but I can’t let you do that. You don’t even know me.”
“Well let’s remedy that shall we? I’m Ransom.” He holds out his hand to you.
You gladly shake it. “Y/N. What are these drinks going to cost me, Ransom?”
He releases your hand as he smirks at you. “Well gorgeous, what will it get me?”
You put your finger to your chin and ponder for a moment. “Hmmm. Well I guess you could take me out on a date.”
He grins even wider. “Done. How about next Friday night? Say 7? We could meet here?”
“Perfect. I’ll see you then, handsome-I mean, Ransom.” You wink as you grab your drink and head over to your friends.
“Geez took you long enough!” Jessica exclaims as you sit beside her.
“Sorry! I was in the middle of staring at the hottest man I’ve ever seen. And I must have charmed him because I have a date next Friday!”
Your 3 friends look towards the bar. “Okay, which lucky guy is it babe?” Rachel wants to know as she looks back at you.
“That one, in the blue sweater. His name is Ransom.” You point discreetly towards him.
Jessica looks at you with wide eyes. “No, Y/N! You can’t go out with him! He’s an asshole! Like I’m talking major asshole. He changes girlfriends like he changes underwear! Go cancel it.”
“Yeah, I’ve heard nothing but horrible things, Y/N. Save yourself the heartbreak and go end it now.” Rachel agrees with Jessica.
You can’t believe them. The first date you’ve had in god knows how long and they are both trying to shut you down. You turn towards Sophie, who has remained unusually quiet. “Well what about you, Soph? What’s your opinion?”
She glances over at him. “Look, I’ve also heard he’s an asshole but I also heard he’s phenomenal in bed so what’s wrong with her getting some?” She then directs her gaze at Jess and Rachel.
“Nothing is wrong with that at all! We just know how she gets. She can’t just sleep with him and then be done. That’s not her. She’ll catch feelings. Like always.”
You glare over at Jessica. “First of all stop talking about me like I’m not even here! And yes I know I’ve managed to catch feelings in the past but for Christ’s sake it’s just a date! It’s not like I accepted a marriage proposal. Who said I’d even want to see him again after Friday?”
You regret more than anything not canceling that date.

By now you were on your 10th date with Ransom. You had suggested a horror movie marathon at your place which he graciously accepted. You were still trying to find the asshole part of him. He’s been nothing but amazing to you so far.
You answer the door as soon as you hear him knocking. He greets you with a huge smile and a bag of snacks. “Hi, gorgeous.” He drops the bag and pulls you in for a searing kiss. This is as far as you two had gone and you were hoping to change that tonight.
You smile as you break from the kiss. “What movie do you want to start with first?”
He picks up the bag and hands it to you as he heads into the living room. “Why not start with a classic? Halloween.” He picks it up and heads to put it in the DVD player.
“Perfect! I’ll go get the drinks and snacks.”
After grabbing a couple of beers and some popcorn you head back in to find Ransom all comfy on your couch. He smiles and opens his arms for you. You happily oblige and get settled in them before pressing play.
You make it til almost the end before the kissing starts. Which leads to you straddling him. Which then leads to grinding down on his growing erection.
He groans and pulls out of the kiss. “Should we take this to your bedroom, gorgeous?”
You nod enthusiastically and lead him to it.
Well Sophie was definitely right about one thing, he was phenomenal in bed.

November 15th, 2015
You’ve officially been dating Ransom for about 2 months now. And you couldn’t be happier.
You were currently in the throes of passion and tangled up in the sheets with Ransom buried deep inside of you.
“Come on, gorgeous. Move those hips faster. You’re the one that wanted to be on top.” He smacks your ass and grabs onto your hips.
You place your hands on his chest and move as fast as your body will allow. “I’m going as fast as I can, Ran. You could help you know.”
He smirks as he sits up and starts meeting your thrusts. He grabs onto your hips and starts basically moving them for you. All you can do is wrap your arms around his neck and hang on for the ride. You know you’re about to fall over the edge.
“God damn, gorgeous. I can feel you squeezing me tight. Come on, come for me. Make a mess all over this big cock.” He moves one hand and starts rubbing your clit in hard circles. That’s all you needed. You come with a scream of his name. Your release triggers his. He whispers your name as he spills inside of you. He thrusts into you a few more times before he stills and pulls you in for a hug.
After a few minutes both of your breathing comes back to normal. He pulls back a little and tucks some hair behind your ear. He cups your face and runs his thumb over your cheek. He pulls you in for a breathtaking kiss. So different from the heated ones you were sharing not even 2 minutes ago. He pulls away and looks at you with what you can only describe as love in his eyes.
“I love you, Y/N. I know it’s only been 2 months but, I do.”
A smile breaks out across your face. “Thank god you said it. I’ve been wanting to say it for weeks now!”
He gets the biggest smile on his face. “You have not! You’re just saying that because I was brave enough to say it first you chicken!” He says teasingly as he starts peppering kisses over your neck, causing you to giggle.
You gasp, pretending to be offended. “Chicken? Excuse you, I am no chicken. I just didn’t want to scare you away!”
He starts poking right under your ribs, knowing how ticklish you are. “You couldn’t scare me away even if you tried, chicken.”
You try to pull out of his grasp but he holds you even tighter. He pulls you back in for another toe curling kiss.
You pull enough away so that you can tell him, “I love you, Jerkface.”
He throws his head back in laughter. “I love you, too, gorgeous girl.”
September 1st, 2016
You were wrapped up in Ransom’s arms and listening to the sound of the rain hitting the windows. You both decided today was a great day to stay in bed and do nothing. You had recently moved in with Ransom and so far things had been amazing. Sure you had the occasional spat but the make-up sex was always fantastic. Sometimes you think he starts them on purpose.
You were almost asleep when you heard Ransom say something. You gaze sleepily up at him. “I’m sorry Ran, I didn’t hear you. What was that?”
He continues running his hand through your hair as he smiles down at you. “I asked if you wanted to go to the Fall Festival when it’s up and running? I know it’s your favorite thing.”
You sit up a little and look down at him. “Ransom, you hate the Fall Festival. You wouldn’t go with me last year.”
“Yeah, well I want to take you this year. I even promise to enjoy myself. Please?”
Well how could you say no to that?
“Okay, fine. You’ve pulled my leg.”

October 21st, 2016
As soon as Ransom pulled into the festival you started squealing with excitement. He couldn’t help but laugh at your eagerness, almost feeling it himself. Nervous, but eager nonetheless.
You both get out of the car and head towards the gate. “What do you want to do first, Ransom?”
He pretends to ponder it for a moment. “How about we get you some cider and then go for a hayride?”
You beam up at him. “Perfect!”
You can’t help but notice as you’re in line for the hayride how weird Ransom is acting.
“You okay, babe? You’ve been acting off all day.”
He looks down at you. “Uh, yeah. Fine. Just a lot on my mind. Nothing for you to worry about.”
You furrow your brows. “Are you sure? You know you can talk to me about anything.”
Before he has a chance to reply, you’re being called for the next hayride.
You’re relaxing against Ransom and enjoying the beautiful view when he clears his throat. You give him a questioning look.
“Y/N. I know we haven’t been together terribly long and have only been living together for a few months but”...he reaches into his brown coat pocket and pulls out a small box. You gasp and put your hand over your mouth... “You have really changed my life for the better. You make me so happy and I just want to do the same for you. So with that being said”...He opens the box and reveals a beautiful diamond ring...“Will you marry me?”
You can’t even speak. You have tears pouring down your face. You are beyond happy. You furiously nod your head and throw your arms around his neck. He reciprocates the hug and wraps his arms around you. You hear clapping coming from the other people on the hayride.
He pulls away from you and grabs your left hand. He places the diamond on your finger. “Thank you gorgeous girl.”
“Thank you for what?”
“Making me the happiest I think I’ve ever been.”
“Is this why you wanted to bring me to the festival?”
He looks away sheepishly. “Well, yeah. What better way to propose to a girl who loves Fall than on a hayride?”
You smile and give him a kiss. “You know we’re having a Fall wedding right?”
He chuckles. “I wouldn’t expect anything different. But can we be engaged for a while? Just enjoy it before the headache of wedding planning takes over?”
“Fine with me, handsome.”

September 15th, 2018
With the wedding only a little over a month away, you were super busy. Not only did you have work but now you had to plan a wedding too.
Ransom didn’t help with it. He said he wanted you to do what you wanted and he’d be happy.
Well easier said than done. Of course your girls helped you out. After they got over the initial shock of Ransom proposing, they were on board for a Fall wedding and you couldn’t have gotten the planning done without them.
The stress of the wedding has really been taking its toll on you and Ransom. You guys have been fighting a lot more recently. You’ve actually taken your ring off a few times and threw it at him, claiming you could never marry a child like him. Of course that always blew over in a few hours and he would slide the ring right back on as he fucked you against the nearest surface.
You guys haven’t had much time together lately what with you working and wedding planning. You were in some desperate need of Ransom.
You decided to leave work at noon today to surprise him.
On your way home you stopped by his favorite sandwich shop to pick up lunch and even stopped by a bakery for some cookies. Pumpkin chocolate chip. His favorite.
You smile when you see his Beemer in the driveway. You couldn’t wait to see him. And let’s be real, fuck him.
Your smile falters however as you’re unlocking the door. You hear some odd noises coming from the kitchen.
You turn the corner and stop dead in your tracks. You drop everything in your hands to the floor. There was your fiancé, with some girl bent over the kitchen counter, fucking into her without abandon.
He looks over at the noise and notices the food spilled all over the floor. He moves his gaze up your body and reaches your tear-filled eyes. He holds out his finger to you, asking you to hold on a minute.
Your jaw drops. Not only is he fucking some bitch against YOUR kitchen counter, he has the audacity to tell you to wait?
He turns his attention back to the whore in front of him and picks up his pace a little. You can’t stand there any longer. You head upstairs to your shared bedroom and start looking for your suitcase. You find it buried in the closet and throw it opened onto the bed. You start throwing clothes into it, not even bothering to fold anything. You are trying your hardest not to let the tears fall. You couldn’t let him see you cry.
A few minutes later you hear him come into the room. “Y/N, what do you think you’re doing?”
You stop rummaging through your underwear drawer and turn towards him. He’s standing at the doorway looking shocked that you’re packing. “Excuse me, shouldn’t I have asked you that question when I walked in and found you fucking some random girl in our kitchen?”
He rolls his eyes as he walks in the room and starts taking your clothes out of the suitcase. “Would you calm down? It’s not like you’ve been willing lately. Had to find somebody else to take care of my needs.”
He was saying this like it was no big deal. You couldn’t believe it. Sure you’d been stressed and tired lately and had turned down a couple advances from him. But you had sex only 2 weeks ago so it hasn’t even been that long. You started yelling. “It’s been 2 weeks Ransom! Not 2 years! I’m sorry I’ve been busy working and planning our wedding alone!”
He once again rolls his eyes as he crosses his arms. You start throwing your clothes back in the suitcase. “You’re not leaving. It’s your fault I had to go find some slut to get off. You’ve been turning me down and acting like a real bitch lately. What did you expect me to do?”
You close your suitcase and zip it up. You look at him, the tears trying desperately to fall down your face. “I expected you to be faithful to me no matter what. But I guess that was asking too much.”
You brush past him and head down the stairs. You can hear him stomping behind you. “So that’s it? You find me fucking someone else and you’re done? What about all the others, huh?”
You stop dead in the hallway and turn around. “How many others have there been Ransom? Have you been faithful to me at all?”
He comes over and puts his hands on your shoulders. “I don’t think it really matters how many others. Haven’t I been nothing but good to you? What’s it matter if I fuck someone else from time to time?”
You shrug out of his grasp. “You just don’t get it do you? Am I not enough for you? Before this wedding planning we were having sex everyday! What more could you want?”
He puts his hands on his hips. “No, sometimes you’re not enough Y/N. Sometimes I want something different. But that doesn’t mean I don’t still love you.” That did it. The tears started falling. You weren’t enough, apparently you’ve never been enough.
“I deserve someone who thinks I am enough, Ransom. You were always more than enough for me. I guess I was asking too much for the same in return. Now you can go fuck anyone you want. Don’t let me stand in your way.”
You turn to leave and feel him grab your arm. He makes you drop your suitcase and spins you around. He wraps his arms around your waist and pulls you in for a kiss. The tears are really falling now. You realize this will be the last time you kiss Ransom Drysdale so you indulge yourself a little and kiss him back. You wrap your arms around his neck and thread your fingers through his hair. He tries to push you back against the wall, that’s when you come back to reality.
You pull away from him and step back. “No, Ransom. You can’t just kiss me and make this better. Nothing is going to make this better. I’m done.”
“Then why the fuck did you kiss me back?”
You pick up your suitcase off the floor. “I guess I just wanted a last kiss from you.”
You turn to leave when he yells at you. “You could at least have the decency to give me back the fucking ring I spent 50 grand on!”
That struck a nerve. You drop your suitcase by the door. “You want it back? Fine!”
You head into the kitchen and remove the ring from your finger. You take a moment to look at it one more time. It really was beautiful.
You hear Ransom come into the kitchen. “Y/N, what are you doing? Give it to me!”
You chuck the ring down the sink drain and flip the switch for the disposal. You turn around to leave and see Ransom standing there with his mouth hanging open. “You fucking bitch! I was going to return that to get my money back!”
You don’t even respond. You just head towards the door and grab your suitcase and don’t look back.

January 20th, 2019
Your friends allowed you to cry over Ransom for only a few months before they came to your apartment and did an intervention. You had only been leaving for work and groceries. Listening to Taylor Swift’s song, Last Kiss, on repeat.
You were thankful for them. Not once did any of your friends say I told you so. But they did all threaten to castrate him.
They also told you that the best way to get over someone was to get under someone else. So you did, a few times.
You decided that tonight was another great night to take someone home. You were hoping it would be this guy at the bar you've been staring at for the past hour.
You decide to just go for it. You ask your friends if you look okay before you start your way towards him. Unfortunately you were stopped about halfway there. By none other than Ransom.
“Well, look who we have here. Y/N, nice to see you.”
You knew this moment would come eventually. You’d been practicing what you were going to say to him. “Hugh, wish I could say the same.”
“Hugh? Ouch. I remember a time when you were moaning Ransom, sweetheart.”
“Yeah well you did a good job to make sure that wouldn’t happen again.”
“Who says it couldn’t? I wouldn’t mind taking you home tonight.” He runs a finger down your arm.
“Ugh, pass.” You start to walk past him. But of course he wasn’t done running his mouth.
“Oh, so you can whore around town and fuck random strangers but you won’t go to bed with me?”
You whip around and glare at him. “What did you just say to me?”
He crosses his arms over his chest and smirks at you. “Yeah, I heard you’ve been sleeping around. Turning into a little whore. I’m proud.”
You walk up and slap him hard across the face. Everyone in the bar has stopped to stare at the two of you. “You don’t get to call me a whore. I’m sorry that I thought you were going to be the person I spent the rest of my life with. You were it for me, Hugh. But you had to go and fuck someone else. So yes, I slept with a few people to try and forget you. I make no apologies for how I chose to repair what you broke. If anything, you’re the whore.”
He stands there, mouth agape, with his hand over his cheek where you had slapped him.
You don’t even give him time to say anything. You head back over to your friends. They all high five you and tell you how amazing you had been.
Ransom feels all eyes on him and decides it’s probably best if he leaves.
🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁 September 22nd, 2019(Current day)
Since Ransom ruined Fall for you last year, you decided to enjoy every second of it this year. Your goal for the day was to take a nice long walk in the park and then go to dinner with your girls tonight.
You get dressed in a pair of black leggings and a grey sweatshirt that says ‘It’s just a bunch of Hocus Pocus’ from your favorite movie ever.
You put on your tennis shoes and grab your keys and a 5 from your wallet and head out.
You moved to New York a few months ago for a new job. You love it here. And so far Fall is just as beautiful here as it was in Boston. The only downside was you missed your friends. That’s why you were so excited for dinner tonight. They were coming in just to see you. Okay and to shop.
You gasp as you enter the park. The leaves are just beautiful. Orange, yellow, and red as far as the eye can see. You can’t help but smile. You just know this Fall will be better than last year was. You just have a feeling.
You spot a cart selling hot apple cider. You remove the 5 from the pocket in your leggings and stand in line. You thank the man who hands it to you and tell him to keep the change. Nothing is going to ruin your mood today.
You start leisurely strolling down a random path and just enjoy the crisp autumn air. There’s a chill to it today and you absolutely love it. You take a sip of your cider. It’s perfect.
You look to your left and see children laughing and jumping into piles of leaves. That was your favorite activity when you were a kid. You smile and go to take another sip of your cider. But before it reaches your mouth, it’s knocked from your grasp. Something has hit you from behind. You start to fall forward and reach your hands out to brace yourself. But then you feel a pair of hands grab your waist.
You hear a deep voice behind you. “Oh my god! Are you okay? I’m so sorry! I was trying to change a song on this stupid IPod and didn’t see you!.”
You turn around and get ready to give whoever ran into you a piece of your mind. But you’re stopped cold. There's a pair of beautiful blue eyes looking back at you. You quickly shake your head and move your gaze over his face. He looked almost familiar. Almost like Ransom. But more handsome if that was possible. He had the same blue eyes but instead of brown he had a gorgeous head of blonde hair.
Once you realize he’s still holding onto you and you’re staring at him like a creeper,  you take a step back and clear your throat. “Oh, it’s okay. No blood, no foul.”
He smiles at you as he gives you a once over. “You sure? I didn’t injure you did I?”
You return his smile. “Not at all.” You hold your hand out. “I’m Y/N. Nice to meet you.”
He shakes your hand. “Steve, nice to meet you too.” His gaze lowers to your shirt. “You like Hocus Pocus, too?”
You reluctantly release his hand. “Like it? It’s only my favorite movie.”
“One of mine too! Autumn is actually my favorite time of the year.”
You smile widely. “Me too! It’s the best!”
His gaze then falls to the ground behind you. “Oh, did I make you spill your cider? Please let me buy you another one. I know how important hot cider can be on a chilly day.” He holds out his arm for you to take.
You loop your arm through his. “Are you sure? You really don’t have to.”
He starts walking in the direction of the cider cart. “Of course I do. Besides it gives me an excuse to keep talking to the beautiful girl I almost ran over.”
You look down and blush. You knew this Fall was going to be better. You just felt it.

The 5 Times Patton Tripped and the 1 Time Patton Fell (In Love)
Happy borthday @midnightsdarkangel!!!
AU: Human Pairing: Moxiety Words: 3704 Warnings: Lots of tripping, brief mentions of pain. Anything else, please let me go.
Summary: Patton falls over a lot; always has, always will. But while he was used to it, that didn’t mean his new roommate and friend would immediately be okay with it.
--
Patton had always been clumsy. Ever since he was young, he’d been covered in so many little scrapes and bruises that his mother fondly nicknamed him ‘Dalmatian’. It continued well into his adult life and was just his normal; not once did he step out of his home without a plaster covering some sort of scratch. However, just because he was used to tripping so often, didn’t mean that everyone was used to seeing him falling to the ground.
It always happened in an instant. One second, he was upright and just fine. The next, his face was planted on the ground and something was stinging. Patton would simply laugh it off, pick himself up and continue on with his day. However, when he fell in front of his new roommate, Patton didn’t know that he wasn’t going to let it go so easily.
“Patton, oh my god. Are you okay? Are you hurt? That looked like it hurt a lot. Do you need help? What happened, oh god.” Virgil rambled in a single breath, falling to the ground beside his new friend.
Patton pushed himself up onto his knees, brushing the dirt off his hands. “I’m fine, I promise. Just a little fall, nothing big. I’m used to it.” He reassured him, though did wince slightly as the grazed skin moved in his attempt to stand. Patton went to brush the dirt from his leg, but Virgil’s hand gripped his wrist tightly before he could even get close.
“Don’t! You’ll get more dirt in it! There’s a bench a little down the street. Come sit. I’ll clean it. I have water in my backpack and some wipes, probably some tissues too.” The emo dragged Patton towards the bench as he continued to rattle off words. Patton didn’t have it in him to turn his friend down, so he simply did as he was told.
As Virgil was swinging his backpack over to unzip it, Patton glanced back to where he had pretty much made out with the pavement. He found that it was pretty flat, none of the stone were too out of place and made an obvious Patton-Hazard. Nothing around the area was showing as something that would be at fault either.
“Ow!” Patton yelped, flinching away from the damp tissue Virgil held.
“Sorry, but we need to get the dirt out…”
“Oh no, it’s okay! I didn’t mean to do that! I just wasn’t expecting it.” Patton reassured, relaxing more and giving Virgil his full attention. He still cringed when the damp tissue pressed against the graze, but Patton did his best not to worry his roommate even more.
Eventually, Virgil crumpled the tissue up in his fist and dropped the bottle back into his backpack, “It’s the best I can do for now. We should probably get back and put something over it though. Just to be safe. I’m gonna go put this in the bin over there, back in a sec.”
Patton nodded and went to stand back up, but something moving out of the corner of his eye caught his attention. Patton looked down at his feet, blinked for a moment and then sighed, “I swear my shoelaces were tied before… that was probably it.” He reached down to tie them again, but a sudden incredulous voice had him looking up.
“Are you serious? You think you tripped on your shoelaces?” Virgil asked, his eyes wide.
Patton shrugged, “I mean, yeah. I’ve done it loads of times. They just never wanna stay tied.” He pointed at the laces of his shoes and wagged his finger at them, as though he were a father scolding his child.
“Oh my god…” Virgil dropped to sit next to Patton on the bench, “Are you for real?”
The pastel-coloured man sat back up, finally having his laces sorted. He tilted his head in confusion, patting his body down, “Um, well… I think so?”
--
Virgil learnt quickly that Patton had a very special relationship with gravity. It seemed like it wanted nothing more than to have Patton be as horizontal as possible. He’d learnt that Patton had issues with walking on uneven surfaces, even surfaces… just generally walking anywhere. Patton’s biggest enemy, though, was stairs.
So, when they went to see a movie with some friends and they had to climb the steps to get to their seats, Virgil was already counting down the seconds until disaster.
Their two friends went first, making it up to the seats with absolutely no issues, as most normal people did. Virgil gestured for Patton to go up before him, just so he could see if and when his roommate was going to fall down. He counted each step.
One. Two.
It was going fine. He was halfway there. Maybe today was a good day and the universe would leave Patton alone.
Six. Seven. Ei-
Never mind.
The fall was spectacular. Since Patton was holding a full bucket of popcorn and his natural reaction was to throw his arms out to cushion the blow, the sound and sight of the snack falling all around him really made it look more dramatic than it was.
Virgil quickly hopped up the stairs, taking them two at a time. He crouched by Patton, offering a hand to help him to his feet. Patton got back up and looked down at the popcorn all around them, a slight wobble to his lower lip as the guilt punctured his heart.
Patton turned to his roommate, “I’m so sorry, Virgil.” He whispered, clearly trying not to let tears roll down his cheeks, “I shouldn’t have held that. I knew I was gonna fall. I just wasted it all.” He suddenly gasped and tried to push past to make his way back down the floor, but Virgil stopped him and steered the man into his seat. “Virge! Let me go! I need to go tell someone!”
“No.” Virgil responded firmly, pushing his own popcorn bucket into Patton’s grip, “That’s why I got two. And I’ll go find someone. You stay here. Logan, make sure he stays.” When their friend nodded, Virgil turned on his heel and sped back down the stairs. He quickly located the nearest usher, let them know what happened and made his way back to his screen. The lights had dimmed, and the adverts had started to play, so Virgil creeped back up the stairs and slipped into his seat beside Patton. Before he’d even had the chance to relax, a pair of hands gripped his hoodie sleeve.
Patton looked to be right on the edge of crying when Virgil turned to look at him. “Virgil, did you find someone? Is everything okay?” He whined pathetically, sniffling like a hurt child.
“Yes, I did. They said they clean it once the movie’s over. No one was mad.” Virgil whispered back, awkwardly patting Patton’s hands to try and be reassuring. After Patton smiled softly and turned back to looking at the screen, Virgil let out a silent breath he didn’t know he’d been holding.
--
“Virgil! Virgil! Come out here! Look, look!”
Virgil groaned and forced himself to sit up in bed. He checked the time on his phone, only to find it was around 8am, far too early for Virgil to be awake. But, the constant happy squealing noises from outside his room forced his hand and he slid out from under the covers, exiting his room in a sleepy haze, “What?” He grumbled, rubbing his eyes tiredly.
“PUPPY!” Patton held the dog up to Virgil’s face, causing the emo to yell suddenly in surprise and take a step back. “Sorry, I got really excited.” Patton had a light blush to his cheeks, but his grin still remained as large as ever as he petted the small animal.
“Right… um, so… why is there a dog here? You didn’t, like, get one without telling me, right?” Virgil tentatively asked, trying his best to hurt his incredibly sweet and cute roommate’s.
“Well…” Patton swayed back and forth, trying to pick his words carefully, “My mum’s friend is out of town for a bit and she needed someone to look after her dog. She asked my mum, but my mum is really busy and already has two dogs that she can just about look after and they don’t really like other dogs. And, well, long story short, I kinda said I could look after the dog for a while… and now she’s… here?” Patton offered with a sheepish grin.
Virgil looked between Patton and the dog for a moment, his sleep-addled brain trying to come up with something to say that wasn’t embarrassing. He eventually just shrugged and turned back to go into his room, “Whatever, just make sure it doesn’t destroy anything. I’m going back to bed.”
Patton let out a high-pitched squeal of happiness, “You’re the best, Virgil! I’ll make sure that she’s good!” He called out as the door shut behind his roommate, not allowing him to see the light blush the compliment put upon the emo’s cheeks.
A few uneventful days passed by with Patton fussing over the dog every second of every hour while Virgil awkwardly listened from either in his room or from the couch. It seemed like everything was going just perfectly. But then…
A loud squeal and yelp sounded, with several more noises that struck fear into the emo following shortly after. Virgil jumped to his feet, wrenched open the door and practically threw himself out into the living room. “PATTON?! Are you alright?!” His gaze trained downwards to the man sat on the ground before him, with the dog cautiously approaching him again.
Patton rubbed his butt while he smiled sheepishly, “I didn’t see her down there. I just fell back after I felt her on my foot. I’m okay!” As he started to collect up his belongings that had fallen from his grip, the dog had seemingly deemed Patton safe and started to jump up to lick his face again. It distracted him enough to drop his things back to the floor and just be reduced to pure giggles.
Virgil let out a sigh of relief and moved across the room to pick up Patton’s stuff, “Next time, just don’t carry so much crap with you. I don’t need another heart attack like that, okay?”
Patton nodded, holding the dog in his arms with a wide grin and shining eyes, as though he had the best life he could possibly ask for and hadn’t just fallen on his ass a few minutes ago. The sight had Virgil’s world stopping dead for a moment. Just enough for him to commit it to memory.
--
“And you tell me that my room is a mess…” Virgil quipped as he opened the door to his roommate’s bedroom.
“It’s not that bad!” Patton protested with a huff. He’d taken a few steps in and turned to stare at Virgil with a pout. It was hard enough to see where his feet were as there was a pile of clothes just in front of him, as well as other piles of random objects around the rest of the floor space. It had clearly been like this for a long time, as there seemed to be something akin to pathways running between the mess – going from the bed to the desk to the door to the window.
“Uh huh… sure.” Virgil carefully took his first steps into Patton’s room. “So, what was it you needed help with?” He asked, peering at all the pictures that littered the shelves closest to the door.
“Oh right!” Patton spun on his toes and wandered over to the tallest bookshelf, “Can you help me reach up there?” He pointed to the very top, “Something accidentally got up there and I can’t quite reach by myself…”
“I mean, I can try.” Virgil cautiously stepped around the rest of the mess and joined Patton just in front of the bookshelf. “How do you wanna do this? I’m not exactly that much taller than you. I could… maybe… try and lift you up to reach it, or something…”
Patton gasped, his eyes lighting up, “That’s perfect!” He grabbed Virgil’s arms and tugged him closer, “I didn’t even think of that!”
Virgil opened his mouth to ask how else he was supposed to help but thought better of it. He crouched down a little and wrapped his arms tightly around Patton’s legs, “Are you sure you’re okay with this?”
“Yup! I’m ready!” Both Patton’s hands were ready on Virgil’s shoulders, in case he needed to steady himself.
Carefully and slowly, Virgil stood, lifting his roommate up in the air. Patton’s grip on his shoulders was tight, but not entirely uncomfortable. It was a bit of a shock that Patton was as light as he was, and that Virgil was as strong as he was. Neither expected this to go so well. Patton, with a moment of hesitation, managed to reach up on top of the bookshelf and feel around for the missing object. The moment his hand came in contact with it, he gasped, “I got it!” He grabbed a hold of it tightly and pulled it close to his chest. At the same pace, Virgil dropped him back to the ground and let him go.
It was only once they’d fully parted that Virgil got a chance to see what it was.
“I’m afraid to ask why that stuffed cat was on top of the bookshelf, but I’m apparently too stupid to keep my mouth shut.” Virgil cocked his head, raising a questioning eyebrow.
Patton blushed and clutched the plush toy tighter, “It was an accident… We were dancing and just, all of a sudden, he went flying…”
“Dancing?”
“Yeah! Like this!”
Patton started to slow dance, holding the cat’s paw in his hand as though it was his dance partner. He twirled around the room, humming to himself. It was a little silly, but ultimately endearing. At least, it was for a while.
Somehow, a rogue bottle rolled into the space Patton was dancing in and got under his feet. In the moments he was going down, Patton’s eyes widened in fear and he reached out for the closest thing to try and keep himself upright. Unfortunately, the object he grabbed a hold of was not steady enough and both of them fell to the ground. Patton let out a pained squeak and shut his eyes tight as his head hit the floor, the blow only somewhat cushioned by the mess beneath it.
“Owww…” he whined, going to reach up to rub his head. It was stopped by something sorta squishy yet still firm. Patton’s brow furrowed as his hand grasped a hold of whatever it was that was in his way and his eyes opened, only to be met with a familiar pair of eyes underlined with dark eyeshadow. “Virgil…?”
The emo’s face was a deep red as his blush spread across his face. He opened and closed his mouth several times, his eyes darting between Patton’s face and the hand that was curled around his forearm. Eventually, Virgil managed to croak out a few words, though they were no louder than a whisper, “You… you okay?”
Patton muttered a gentle “yeah”, as he seemed to almost forget where he was, staring up into Virgil’s eyes. They seemed to be getting closer, but Patton couldn’t say if he was seeing things or not. They’d eventually get off the floor and have a long chat, but for now, this was fine. The pain was gone too.
--
Over time, Virgil had done everything he could to make sure anything that was a trip hazard was either removed or given more height. It did mean that the rug they had was now pretty much glued to the floor at the edges and the coffee table was like a mini dining table, but less injuries were far more beneficial.
Virgil was relaxing on the couch, watching some show for the umpteenth time while scrolling through his phone absent-mindedly. In the kitchen, he could hear the sound of the oven and dishwasher – both of which Virgil had been supervising helping with since Patton almost toppled over or walked into them whilst loading them up. Thankfully, they happened on separate occasions, but it was enough to have Virgil’s anxiety going crazy if Patton was alone in the kitchen too long. His roommate was currently in his room, on the phone with his family. It was a calm afternoon, something Virgil needed.
After a while, Patton’s phone call ended and he practically skipped out into the living area, ready to greet his roommate. He’d only gotten so far as to open his mouth, when his foot caught on his other and he went plummeting to the ground.
Thankfully, he’d been close to the couch when his feet got all tangled together.
Patton’s landing was cushioned by Virgil’s hands and his face pretty much ended up directly in the emo’s lap. His cheeks flushed a soft pink as he raised his head to smile up at the man on the couch, “Whoops, sorry about that…” However, Patton didn’t move from the position – other than tucking his legs under himself so he was more comfortable. His head rested back down onto Virgil’s lap and Patton relaxed, one of the hands that had caught him now gently running through his hair.
Virgil let out a playful sigh, “What are we gonna do with you?”
“Hmm, I dunno. Sure you’ll figure it out though.” Patton reached up and interlocked his fingers with Virgil’s free hand, pulling it close enough that he could place a soft kiss upon the metal band.
“You might be a lost cause, but we’ve got plenty of time to find that out…” Virgil’s voice was low as he looked down at the man resting in his lap, a gentle smile tugging at his lips.
--
Patton was positively giddy with excitement. He’d not been able to stop smiling since the moment he woke up. His day had been absolutely magical, something he’d treasure for years to come. He felt stunning in his gorgeous, tailor-made white dress with flowing long sleeves and soft makeup, all complimented wonderfully by his partner’s darker tastes as they stood side-by-side.
Finally, he was in his partner’s arms, slowly swaying to the music. Nothing over-the-top, no spinning or twirling, no choreography – much to their friends’ dismay and frustration - just a sweet moment for a sweet couple. At least, that was what Patton thought was going to happen.
All of a sudden, his hand was grasped tightly, and three words were whispered into his ear.
“Hold on tight.”
Patton had no time to even ask what that meant before he heard the song change and he was spun out and back in. He could only laugh in surprise, when he caught the playful glint in Virgil’s eyes and they both started to dance with more purpose. It was still far from choreographed, but it didn’t matter to them.
Patton’s smile had widened into a grin as he continued to laugh. Once more, as the end of the song approached, he was spun out and back, but this time he felt his weight tipping backwards. He squealed in shock, reaching up for Virgil with his free hand and grabbing a hold of his shoulder. Patton didn’t even reach the floor, however. Instead, he felt his weight being supported by Virgil’s arm beneath him.
“Gotcha.” Virgil said quietly with a grin. His partner burst into giggles and Virgil returned him upright, wrapping him in a loose hug.
“That wasn’t fair, Virge!” Patton jokingly chastised his new husband as they took their seats at the head table with the rest of their wedding party.
Virgil simply shrugged, “You’d fall at some point today anyway. Why not get a head start?”
“Virgil!” Patton whispers, lightly tapping against his arm with the back of his hand causing them both to smile at each other.
Later, once the speeches had concluded and food had been served, Virgil was looking over to his now-husband. He’d been under strict instruction from Patton’s mother to keep as close to Patton as he could for the duration of the wedding and reception, in order to save him if he tripped over. Not only to avoid him any embarrassment, but also save the pristine white dress from any dirt so the pictures would look good. But, it was bound to happen at some point during the reception. Patton was going to find some way to end up falling over and he would probably scuff the dress up a little bit. Patton would immediately feel so awful about ruining it, even if it could just be dry-cleaned later. So, Virgil had concocted a plan.
He purposefully grabbed his drink with more force than necessary, causing a few drops to spill over the edge and at least one tiny splotch to appear on Patton’s dress. Virgil gasped exaggeratedly in order to grab Patton’s attention, “Oh my god. I’m so sorry, Patton. I spilt my drink on your dress…”
Patton looked down and noticed the little mark, “You didn’t. It’s just a tiny little mark, it’ll be fine!” He cheerily reassured his partner, who shook his head.
“No, no… I really did ruin it. It’s no longer… perfect. I’m so sorry.” Virgil emphasised that it was his fault.
The cogs clicked in place and Patton’s expression slowly turned to one of understanding, “Ohhh…” he breathed out as his smile returned, “Well, it’s still okay. No harm done to either of us, right?” Patton winked unsubtly.
“Yeah, no harm at all.” Virgil pressed a kiss to Patton’s cheek before returning to his food.
Patton couldn’t help but stare at his husband for a moment. This man had gone from fretting and worrying about Patton’s little falls and trips to making sure that Patton wouldn’t be upset with the consequences of a little stumble on their wedding day. It was enough to make him fall all over again, and this fall wasn’t one he’d ever want to pick himself up from.

Christmas Love
Pairing: Tom Hiddleston x Reader
Chapter: 3/4
Prompt: It is Christmas Eve and you are at your friend’s celebrating and exchange gifts. You just got out of a relationship and surrounded my couples. Tom Hiddleston is your best friend and long standing crush that you have come to terms with that you will never have. The night isn’t as great as you thought it would be, but then you get an unexpected visitor.
Warning: Low self-esteem, unsupportive friends
Tumblr media
Part One   Part Two
“Jake,” (Y/N) fights out. “I need to get back together with Jake.”
The words roll through Tom’s mind as he tosses and turns in his bed. Outside his room he can hear the faintest sounds coming from the tv. After calming (Y/N) down, Tom convinced her to stay at his place. He told her that he was worried about her being alone, and really needs to sort things out. But he also knew that if (Y/N) was truly serious earlier, he would see (Y/N) less and less until they became perfect strangers.
“I’m sorry I just don’t get why you are still with the guy.” Tom presses. “I get that you’ve known him forever, but I think-“
“What is so wrong with Jake?” (Y/N) huffs crossing her arms while leaning back against Tom’s couch. ”He is really sweet.”
Tom positions his body closer to (Y/N). She doesn’t move away, but doesn’t move at all. But Tom doesn’t either. Looking into (Y/N)’s shimmering (Y/E/C) orbs, Tom feels an overwhelming pinch of nerves dance through his stomach as his heart starts to race.
Glancing at her lips Tom thinks of all the times he so badly wanted to kiss her. Anytime (Y/N) would pout trying to playfully get her way. When her bubbly laughter escapes passed with the biggest smile that brightens Tom’s whole day. Any moment of any day he has wanted to kiss her.
Almost consumed by his pent-up emotions. Tom manages to back away. Settling at a safer distance, Tom clears his throat before continuing.
“I just think you deserve more.”
Maddened by the memory, Tom throws his covers off his body and heads for the door. Looking over at the couch he finds it empty except for the chaos of blankets. Suddenly a lump forms in Tom’s throat, did she leave without saying goodbye?
Trudging into the kitchen Tom freezes at the sight of (Y/N) in front of him. Finally exhaling the breath he didn’t know he was holding, Tom fights to keep his composure.
(Y/N) hasn’t noticed his presence yet. Walking over to the sink next to her, Tom tries not to startle her. But once next to her small frame, Tom finally hears the sniffles coming from (Y/N). Engulfing her in his arms, (Y/N) crumbles into his chest. They stay like this till (Y/N) calms down enough and removes herself from Tom’s arms.
“Jake is coming to get me at about noon tomorrow so we can talk.” Her voice grows tighter with each uttered word.
“Jesus, you were serious?” Tom’s composure begins to fade as anger settles in. “(Y/N) he cheated on you! I don’t care what his reasons are. I don’t care that he felt neglected or second best. He should have talked to you instead of fuck someone else!”
“Shut up!” (Y/N) screams before quieting down. “You have no idea what is going on!”
“Well, it looks like you’re trying to get back with a guy what you don’t love. I know the only reason you are doing it is because your friends prefer him.” Tom watches tears stream down (Y/N)’s cheeks like silent waterfalls. The last thing Tom wants is to upset her but she has to know.
“(Y/N) I’m sorry for yelling.” Tom takes (Y/N)’s hands gently in his and looks down at them. “I just want you to be with someone deserving of you. Someone that makes you happy.”
Heavy silence falls in the kitchen. Tom’s gaze remains on (Y/N)’s hands. Rubbing circles against her skin Tom attempts to memorize the pattern of it, the length of each finger, that (Y/N) loves her nails painted the shade of red they are now.
“Jake is not a bad guy, Tom.” Her voice shakes. “Maybe he’s the one for me, maybe not. But he is the only guy I know willing to try.”
Her words sting against every cell in Tom’s body. He can sense that the conversation is over and has to do something. If he doesn’t Tom could lose her, and Tom knows he wouldn’t survive that.
(Y/N) starts to take a step away from Tom. One hand slips from his grasp. Panic sends Tom’s brain into slow mode as he tries to comprehend. As her last hand makes its way out from his, Tom wakes up.
Reaching for her hand, his skin meets hers and gives her arm a soft pull towards him. Stumbling into him, Tom can see the shock and confusion displayed by (Y/N)’s wide eyes and knitted brows. Not wasting another moment Tom crashes his lips to (Y/N)’s.
Responding, Tom feels (Y/N)’s slightly chapped lips dance with his. Tom’s hands gently cup the sides of (Y/N)’s face. Feeling her arms loop around his waist, he is pulled closer to her body. But as soon as the kiss starts, it is over. (Y/N) pulls away but stands firm in place. Catching his breath, Tom tries to figure out what happened.
Dazed but slowly coming to, Tom feels (Y/N) lean her head against his chest. Something wet glosses over a part of his skin. Realizing they are (Y/N)’s tears, Tom wraps his arms around her once more.
“I know you’re overwhelmed.” Tom whispers sweetly. “But I couldn’t wait any longer. And I didn’t want you leaving before you knew how I care for you.”
 (Y/N)’s POV
The events of tonight are a whirlwind in your mind as you lay on the sofa in Tom’s apartment. You can still feel the touch of his lips on yours, and you can’t help but smile. Without realizing it fully, you have been waiting for that moment for years and it was everything you imagined.
A dark solid pit takes place in your stomach, killing any butterflies you have. I have to see Jake tomorrow. Jake is who almost everyone wants you to be with. Almost. You groan at the situation and wished it was more simple.
You look at your phone for the billionth time that day. Shiloh is in the dressing room trying to find a new outfit for tonight’s party. A party that you have no desire to go to, but being forced to appear anyway. If it wasn’t for your friends and boyfriend, you would never go to parties. Sometimes you wonder if that is exactly what you want. Though, it doesn’t look like you’ll get the chance to find out.
“Are you sure you don’t want to try on anything?” Shiloh emerges from the dressing room in the tightest red top you have ever seen. “I think Jake would just die of happiness seeing you in that black cocktail dress out there.”
“I’m fine.” You insist. “I have clothes at home from other parties.”
The same argument has been on replay since getting to the mall two hours ago. Every time there is a new party you always end up here for any of the girls, mostly Shiloh. You already know what you are going to wear, a short black romper that Jake picked out for you months ago that has quite the neckline.
**
The music is booming all through the house. You wouldn’t mind if it was music you actually enjoyed, but your music is never played at these gatherings. Rap is not your style but it of course has to be everyone else’s.
Peering over the crowd you look for Jake. Normally he is with Josh around the drinks in the kitchen. Jake is notorious for drinking way too much at a party, at every party.
Finding him exactly where you thought, you feel a buzz coming from your small bag. Thinking it was a text you let it go but it continues to vibrate. Excusing yourself to the side, you look to see who is calling you. Tom.
“Hello?” You answer while trying to make an escape to outside.
“Darling!” Tom’s excited voice filters through your ears. “Where are you? It is really loud.”
“Just another party everyone dragged me to.” You huff, imagining what you could be doing right now besides being there. You could be reading, watching a movie, sleeping, or talking to Tom without being worried people will hear.
You know none of your friends particularly like Tom. The only reason why is because they think he is a threat to your relationship with Jake. You think they need to mind their own business. Tom is your best friend in the whole world, and you wouldn’t do anything to hurt Jake but you’re not a mind reader. If something is bothering him, he needs to come and talk to you and not everyone else.
“So, what’s up? Why’d you call?” Your curiosity gets the best of you.
“I just missed you and wanted to hear your voice.” Tom says, and you can’t help but feel weightless. Tom could literally choose anyone to have in his life and for some strange reason he chose you. You’re definitely not complaining, in fact you are more than grateful.
Remembering that night, you also remember Jake getting really drunk and insecure about Tom being in your life. Jake has asked for you not to mention Tom while he is around, and you have been doing a great job. Though not long after, Jake asked if there was anything you were hiding about your friendship with Tom. Paranoid that things are happening behind closed doors that you are not mentioning.

The Mechanic: Pt. 2
Link: Part 1
Summary: This is the second part to the first part of The Mechanic. Basically about Harley surviving the snap and becoming apart of Tony’s family. May or may not make more parts, we’ll see.
Word Count:
-
-
-
Tony was never the biggest fan of post-apocalyptic movies.
They were all so… unrealistic. If the world ended, the Avengers would be there to pick it back up. It wouldn’t resemble those over dramatic, grey skied dystopias where everybody is always depressed.
However, then the world actually ‘ended’. And the world may have not been completely like those movies, but it was pretty damn similar.
And that’s why Tony made it his number one priority to keep all sadness and despair away from his sweet little home in the woods. Away from his family.
Family.
Just a few years ago, Tony could barely say he had a family. There was Rhodey, and Happy, plus the rest of the Avengers, but in the end, Tony would go home to an empty house. Then, Pepper gave him a second chance, and even with the snap killing away someone he had held so close to his heart, he had found it in him to rebuild from the rubble.
That’s why now, as he picked up spare clothing around the house for the laundry, Tony cant help but stop and smile as his family peacefully sits in the living room. Not just his wife, but also Harley, who he had legally adopted not too long ago.
A very pregnant Pepper lay on the couch, reading whatever book she had picked out this time, with Harley, cross legged on the floor playing a video game. Tony wasn't quite sure what game he played, but he knew it managed to consume most of his attention as of late.
“Harley,” Pepper looked up from her book, barely managing to catch the teens attention. “Could you grab me a glass of water?”
Harley turned around, raising a brow at the glass sitting on the table.
“I got that one for you, like, five minutes ago. You already finished it?”
“There’s another human being in me, consuming almost everything I consume,” Pepper deadpanned. “Excuse me for being thirsty.”
Harley dropped the remote, holding his hands up and muttering a sorry as he went to complete the task.
“Don’t even try arguing with her,” Tony said quietly as Harley passed him. “Especially In this state, there’s no chance in winning without unleashing the monster.”
It earned him a small laugh, which was enough for Tony. When Harley had first begun living in the compound, there was rarely a smile on his lips. It was expected. His family was dead, he had just hiked for days with nothing but a small backpack and survivor’s guilt… it would be tough for him to get back to his usual self.
However, not too long after moving into the cabin, things started to look up. Pepper announcing she was pregnant. Planning for their small little wedding in front of the lake. A family was built from broken pieces, and though Harley would still wake in the middle of the night with nightmares, or have a breakdown at random moments if he happens to find something triggering, both Pepper and Tony were always there for him.
Harley left down the hall to retrieve the water, while Tony and Pepper returned to their tasks. The chiming of the doorbell broke concentration.
“F.R.I.D.A.Y, who is it?” Tony asked.
“Not sure, boss,” The A.I. responded, projecting an image on Tony’s watch. A man he didn’t recognize stood at the doorway awkwardly, dark haired and blue eyed. He frowned down at the picture.
“Who is it, Tony?” Pepper looked from her book, noticing her husband’s troubled expression. Tony shook his head, giving her a small smile.
“Probably just some lost hiker. I’ll go shoo him off,” Setting down his basket, Tony walked over to the door and opened it, giving the man a polite smile, while remaining alert in case of attack. “Can I help you?”
The man’s gaze shifted from his shoes to the now open doorway, clearly exhausted. There was something… familiar about him. Tony couldn’t quite place what.
“I… I’m sorry, I’m looking for two kids,” The man explained, running a frantic hand through his hair.
Tony’s heart dropped at his words, as pieces began to click together, He refused to give in just yet.
“Kids?” He repeated, clicking his tongue. “Not sure I can help you. Sorry about that,” Tony moved to shut the door, however, the man was quick to place a hand on it. Tony stared at the hand on his door, then back at the man. Some nerves this guy had.
“Harley and Sarah Keener,” The man continued, ignoring the hard set gaze Tony was giving him. “Please, I need to find them. I-I need to know if they’re still alive.”
“If you’re looking for someone, then go to the tombstones. Everyone dead is listed there,” Tony knew it was cruel to turn this man away, especially considering who he was. But he doesn’t care. He won’t jeopardize his family. “Other than that, I think you should leave.”
“They’re my kids, please!” The man exclaimed.
Tony knew. A part of him knew the second F.R.I.D.A.Y threw up the projection. However, there is a fine line between thinking you know, and actually knowing. And he has just crossed it.
“Please,” The man repeated, his voice cracking. “My name is Jack Williams, and if you know where they are-”
“Harley’s here,” Tony snapped, cutting him off. He could lie, turn him away. But that wasn't his choice, and he then realized that. Harley should have been able to make that decision on his own.
“W-what?” Jack’s brows furrowed in confusion.
“Harley’s in the kitchen right now,” Tony explained nonchalantly. “He lives with me and my wife now, after his mom and sister died. Oh, and after you decided to make a one way trip to 7-Eleven.”
Jack’s eyes gazed down as he processed the information. His ex: Dead. Daughter: Dead. But his son? Sitting inside that house, not a clue that his deadbeat father was waiting outside, hoping for some kind of reunion.
“Then let me see him,” Jack frowned at Tony, trying to step into the house. His path is immediately blocked.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” Tony stares at him coldly, pushing his shoulders back. “You take one more step towards this door, and I’ve got about a hundred security protocols that I can initiate with just one word. And guess what? They all end with your ass six feet in the ground, and Harley doesn’t ever have to know you were here.”
Pepper has caught sight of what is going on at this point, silently watching her husband handle this. She would intervene, however, being as pregnant as she is, she doesn’t want to risk the baby.
“But I won’t,” Tony continued, easing the stiffness in his shoulders. No use getting worked up for this waste of space. “That’s Harley’s decision.” Jack opened his mouth to object, but the door had already been shut in his face.
“Tony?” Pepper sighed, searching her husband’s face for some kind answer. She’s become fluent in reading him, but this is an all new emotion all together. A fatherly one.
“Sorry that took so long, I found a spider and was trying to get it outta the house,”
Harley announced as he exited the kitchen, running a hand through his brown locks while carrying a chilled glass of water in the other. Pepper silently took it from him, trying her best to put on a grateful smile. It came out morbid.
Harley’s own smile faltered at her grim features, turning to Tony, who didn’t even attempt to cover the mixed feelings of emotions written across his eyes and lips.
“What’s going on?” The teenager turned between the two, clearly confused.
“Your father's here,” Tony doesn’t try to sugarcoat or ease into the topic. It’s best to just rip it off like a bandage, which he does, and Harley’s response is just as expected.
“W-what?” His voice was barely above a whisper, as if a lower tone would mean the words would just rewrite themselves.
“He wants to see you,” Tony stared at the floor, sliding his hands into his pockets.
“Did you tell him to go?” Harley asked, swallowing thickly. Tony gazed up, his brows furrowing together. Not angrily, but… sadly.
“No,” He shook his head. “It’s not my place to tell him to go. He’s not here for me,” Harley sucked in a sharp breath, wordlessly walking to the door. He walked in quick, loud steps, but there is a cave in his shoulders from the fear and nervousness. Why wouldn’t he be? He spent countless nights running to his parents’ bedroom for his father’s comfort, only to find an empty bed. With his mom working such long nights, Harley was basically the parent for his sister. He did his father’s job. And now he’s here, wanting some sort of relationship with the child he left behind.
What gives him the right? The anger boils in Harley, and he wants to yell, and scream at Jack. That’s all he wants, at this moment. And yet, all he can do is stand in front of the door with shaking hands. Like some sort of coward.
“I can tell him to go, Har,” Tony gently laid a hand on his shoulder.
“You don’t have to do this now,” Pepper added, to let him know he had both of their support. Harley shook his head, slowly wiggling out of Tony’s grasp.
“No. I can do this,” He stated firmly, praying they don’t see how badly his hand trembles as he opened the door.
A part of him hoped that Jack had already left, disappeared from his life for a second time.
His heart dropped when he saw him sitting on the steps of the porch.
As soon as he saw his son, Jack sprang up, hope filling his eyes. It was odd, the way he looked, to Harley. When you’re a child, you worship the ground your parents walk across. They are pure and sinless creatures who seem like Gods. But now? Harley realizes how flawed they really are.
Jack isn’t quite as tall as he had always imagined him. Taller than Tony and Pepper, but still an inch or two beneath Harley. He looks different, as well. It may be the stress, or age, but Harley doesn’t remember his father looking so disheveled, like someone had picked him hungover from a bar. Perhaps that’s exactly what this ‘look’ is.
“Hey, buddy,” Jack grinned, and it seemed to wide. Too fake. His eyes are the most unsettling part. They’re identical to Harley’s. Funny. With the lack of photos in the house, Harley had just always assumed his father had brown eyes. Guess not.
“Hello, Jack,” Harley blinked, trying his best to keep a stoic expression.
“How are you,'' Jack ignored the cold tone, his foot tapping anxiously. He looked up at the house, grinning. “Nice place you got here, huh? They treating you alright?”
“Better than you ever did,” He can’t help it. Harley’s still a teen. Meaning he can’t exactly hold back cruel comments. Not that this is mean. Jack doesn’t even know mean, yet.
“I deserve that,” Jack nodded, his smile vanishing. He walked forward suddenly, causing Harley to flinch. His entire body stiffened up when Jack deemed it okay to wrap him in a tight hug. “I’m so, so sorry, bud. I should’ve never left, I should have stayed with you and your-”
“Yeah, you should’ve,” Harley can’t be a feelingless robot anymore and just simply tell Jack to leave. He thought it would be that simple, but it's not. He yanked Jack’s hands off of him and pushed him away. “I was seven when you left! I was a kid! And now, you’re crawling back! Where do you get off thinking you can just do that?!” Harley screamed, his voice cracking at the end. Jack is stunned by the outburst.
“I-”
“Please, for the love of God, leave,” Harley rubbed his face, turning away as the tears begin to fall.
“Son,” Jack began softly, not giving up. “We’re family. After all that’s happened, family has to stick together.”
“No!” Halrey whipped around, no longer caring if Jack saw the broken pieces he caused. He jabbed a finger violently at his father’s chest. “You are not my family! You were never my family. My family is dead! They-” He cried, pointing at the door. “-are my family now. They love me, and they would never leave me one night because they felt ‘overwhelmed’. You’re a coward, and a deadbeat. You… You need to go,” Harley doesn’t wait for a reply. He can’t. He turned and rushed back inside..
His body shook violently in sobs as he slammed the door closed and fell to his knees. He’s thought of what to say to Jack’s face for years, and when the time comes? He can only get a few sentences out before the emotions rack up and cave in on him. It’s just like all those nights, when he feels so alone that it becomes too much to handle.
But this time, it’s different. Because he’s not alone. Harley is made very aware of that as soon as Tony’s arms wrapped around him, a safe haven from the cruel hands of his real father.
“It’s not fair!” Harley cried, running frantic hands through his hair. “Why does he get to live? Why does my mom and sister die and he gets to live?!”
“I know, kid,” Tony rubbed his back, sighing. “It’s not fair. But you did good out there,” Tony pulled back, staring Harley firmly yet kindly in the eyes. “I’m proud of you, kid.”
And that’s all Harley really needs to hear. A phrase he didn’t have the privilege of hearing very often of growing up. A phrase he had never heard from his father.
And yet, that’s the difference between Jack and Tony. Jack is Harley’s father. But Tony?
Tony is the closest thing to Harley’s dad. To his home. He and Pepper both. And Harley will take that.
