Hi everyone,
My name is Matt and I am trying out tumblr again. I've had an account for a while but never posted much. I'd love to share my work, see other people's art, get some art tips, and most of all talk with fellow artists. I'm a comics artist, illustrator, 3D modeler, and fakemon artist. I'm happy to start sharing my stuff again, and would love if you'd share some of my work if it interests you. I'll be sure to do the same!

I’m doing dooble prompts over on Ko-fi! You can tip whatever you want, you also don’t have to leave a prompt, if you’re just feeling generous.
These are just monster/fakemon doobles btw, not full illustrations. Hopefully y'all are familiar enough with my art to know what to expect.

Your videos have given me inspiration, and I've been thinking of possibly making Fakemons based on more esoteric math concepts, such as Quaternions and beyond, Transfinite Numbers, Combinatorial Game Theory Numbers (Watch Owen Maitzen's video on the topic for more information), and so on.
Can you give me some tips for how to make such designs? Thanks in advance.
Sounds exciting! Yeah abstract concepts are harder to represent, but there are also a lot of abstract-looking life in our world, especially invertebrates. While I can't think of the best tip off the top of my head, I do usually start with the concept and then go look if there is a species or body shape I can tie it to, trying to focus on what is most visually evident about the concept at hand to reference it in the design.

Yet more fakemon! These two are based off of Xenomorphs, Samur Aran/Metroid, and parasitic wasps of all kinds.
Shidell - Bug/Dark
“Born inside the shell of another pokemon, they hollow out the insides in order to hide from the outside world. They struggle to use this body, so when in danger the only thing they can do is run away.”
Paramorph - Bug/Dark
“Now too large for their shell, they’ve been forced to become dangerous fighters. They can now use the full potential of their shell, able to shoot powerful blasts of energy from the tip.“

having painstakingly looked through every palworld creature design, I can confidently say I ain't interested. I wanted my negative first impression to be wrong but lord amighty it does not look better up close.
I was an absolute pokemon kid growin up and I love seeing people's fakemon and fangames and the idea of a poke-like game appeals to me, so I have a lot of thoughts. if you feel defensive of palworld then uhhhh don't read this because tldr I think it looks awful
I thought it looked bad when it was announced so I wasn't paying close attention, but lookin through the pals quickly killed what little interest might have been lurking in me. like I don't wanna be unfair to anybody tryna make pokemon-like games, but these things weren't made with love I can tell you that for sure. there's maybe like 5 that look pretty good and original but the rest.... where do I begin
So first thing, the ripoff pokemon designs. I thought people were exaggerating but oh my god, they weren't. I would be disappointed to see one knockoff pokemon model, but there are dozens of them holy shit. Like at least half the dex is badly-tweaked pokemon models. This alone is enough to completely turn me off to the game because creature design is the heart and soul of this genre so if you ain't even gonna bother making your own damn creatures, what's the fuckin point? Even on some of the more "original" designs, I can point to at least one element that was straight up copy/pasted from an existing pokemon.
Second thing, recycled models within the game. Why do so many bird pals use the same (ripped off) body model? Why do so many pals suffer from same-face syndrome? The first pal I saw was Chillet, I thought it was cute. When I looked through the pals, I kept thinking "oh that face looks like Chillet. oh hey that face looks like Chillet. that one too." The overall effect of this is that a majority of the designs are forgettable, they blur together and feel indistinct from one another. the dex feels increasingly hollow with each reused asset. if you got 10 bird designs and 6 of them look the same, you really only got 5 bird designs.
Third thing (sort of. it's related to the other two), I noticed that there are no object-mon designs in palworld, which I would guess is intentional. I get the feeling that the devs were like, "object-mon are stupid, everything has to look like a creature," which is a common discourse topic in poke-like fan communities, and I think that maybe this played a part in the reusing of assets, because making animalistic creatures that look both natural and distinct from each other is hard! Trying to fill a whole dex with no inorganic-ish creatures is a daunting task, and at a certain point you either need a lot of time, or a lot of artists, otherwise you get same-face syndrome and heavy asset recycling. (I personally enjoy object-mons, as they're reminiscent of yokai, it's like hey here's a mundane object that has been inhabited by a little spirit! I think it's cute.)
Fourth thing, the silhouettes are too busy. Chillet works because it's simple and distinct. Most pals, though, have too many features going on at once, and you couldn't really play "who's that pokemon" with them. Again, this is a consequence of trying to mix-and-match the same pool of assets instead of designing from scratch. In order to make them look more distinct from each other you have to just add a bunch of unnecessary frills and appendages that makes for a cluttered visual impression.
Fifth thing, varying degrees of detail? Some of those pals have smooth, almost textureless skin/fur, but then others like jormuntide have super detailed texture? (also I know I've seen jormuntide's face before, it's from a different game on the tip of my tongue but I can't place it right now, but that's beside the point) You generally want to keep your creatures relatively consistent in terms of like, level of texture detail. It's like some of them are just higher resolution. Which if I'm being honest makes me think they stole assets from more than just Pokemon.
Finally, edginess. Maybe this is just me being too cynical but it feels like this game hates Pokemon. It feels like middle schoolers making jokes about hurhur what if somebody killed Barney the Dinosaur with a gun. The whole making them work in factories and butchering them? Who is the target audience here? There's a pal called Hangyu which vaguely resembles a noose and its dex entry says it was used to execute people by hanging them and also ripping their skin off....Come on man.
in terms of pal design, I give palworld 2/10 because Chillet is cute

FAKEMON TIME HHEHEHEEEHE
First up: Apparotia!
Tumblr media
It’s based on the conspiracy theory that birds aren’t real/are spy drones created by the US government
Classification: Phantasm Pokémon
Type: Ghost/Normal
Ability: Deceptive Wing (gives immunity to Ground moves and gives S.T.A.B. to its Flying moves)
Signature Move: Phantom Cloak (raises its own accuracy by one stage and lowers that of the opposing by one as well - if there are other Apparotia on the field, they’ll get the same buffs)
Lore: It’s made up of ghostly mist that formed the shape of a fairly average-looking bird Pokémon (save for the eerie blue eyes).
They constantly survey their territory and stealthily scout out areas for potential future real estate. When doing this, they enter stealth mode, becoming invisible save for their blue eyes and the red tips of their antenna-like feathers, which glow. These glowy bits signal their presence to other Apparotia in the area, and when a potential threat passes enters the area, the first Apparotia to spot it will rapidly blink the red feather tips to alert the others.
The name pulls from:
- apparition
- maybe apparatus? bc the whole spy-drone thing
- parotia (the bird it’s based on)
ID under the cut
[Image ID: A drawing depicting several sketches of Apparotia, a fan species of Pokémon. Apparotia is a black bird with six antenna-like feathers protruding from its head, with red tips. Its eyes are wide and blue, looking directly at the viewer. At the top of its head are orange feathers, and its chest feathers are orange with a blue and white eye-like marking. Its head feathers, wingtips, and tail feathers are wispy and fade into transparency. A layer of white feathers adorn the underside of its wings.
To the left of the colored fullbody sketch is an uncolored version of the same sketch, in gray linework. At the top is a small sketch of what the wing would look like outstretched. All the faded, wispy feathers in the sketches are labeled ‘wispy bits’. End ID]

Art dump!
Here's a few works that I totally didn't forget to post because I forgot I had a tumblr account *again*, the first one is something I drew in school last week, the second is an artwork inspired by Lord Huron's "meet me in the woods" song. I created it after @lunehowls and I made a connection between that song and both Over the garden wall and Night in the woods!
and the third is Rain World inspired fakemon, Slaggtea and Neurocket.
Fakemon have interested me for a while now.. and if anyone has any tips on how to draw them correctly those would be greatly appreciated!

Soooo, I'm gonna post this fakemon now. Might use in an upcoming fic, might not. But I felt like posting it, 'tis silly and fun :D
Stellar Type Eeveelution: Celesteon
The Starlight Pokemon
Appearance: It is short-haired but has fur tufts by its paws, the end of its tail, the sides of its face, and the tips of its ears. It has a ruff of fur around the neck, and its short fur is a shimmery rainbow gradient. The fur tufts have a star/crystal motif. The head makes up a star shape due to the ears, the tufts of fur extending from its cheeks, and a little unicorn horn on the top of the head (also made of crystal). Its eyes gleam like gems. Its body is slim and dainty. When it walks it leaves behind glittery pawprints.
Ability: Stardust - This Pokemon is covered in a special, glittering powder. This causes it to resist every move type once per battle. All subsequent moves hit the Pokemon for neutral damage.
(This Ability cannot be changed, suppressed or copied via other moves or Abilities)
Notes: Stellar type moves are only supereffective against Terastallized pokemon. These moves hit neutral on everything else. Keep in mind that in canon, the only Stellar type moves are Normal type moves that can change to the Stellar typing under certain conditions (Tera Blast and Tera Starstorm)
When Celesteon Terastallizes into Stellar type, it gains the ‘attack boost for every move type once per battle’ which is a 1.2x boost for everything except Stellar type; for Stellar type moves it gets a 2x boost. If Celesteon is Terastallized into a type other than Stellar, offensively it gains the usual 1.5x STAB for that type and also retains its 1.5x STAB on Stellar type moves. Defensively it takes the defensive properties of its chosen tera type as usual.
Stats: HP (95), Attack (60), Defense (65), Spec Attack (125), Spec Defense (65), Speed (115), 525 total
Learnset:
Lvl 1: Covet, Bite, Copycat, Baton Pass, Take Down, Charm, Double-Edge, Helping Hand, Tackle, Growl, Tail Whip
Lvl 5: Sand Attack
Lvl 10: Quick Attack
Lvl 15: Baby-Doll Eyes
Lvl 20: Swift
Lvl 25: Light Screen, Reflect
Lvl 30: Power Gem
Lvl 35: Healing Wish
Lvl 40: Shooting Star (Tera Type, 85 BP, 10% chance of Terastallizing the target)
Lvl 45: Cosmic Power
Lvl 50: Tera Blast
Lvl 55: Last Resort
Evo: Prism Beam (Tera Type, 50 BP, 20% chance of dropping accuracy by one stage)
TM Movepool: Take Down, Protect, Facade, Swift, Giga Impact, Double Edge, Body Slam, Endure, Sleep Talk, Substitute, Helping Hand, Baton Pass, Hyper Voice, Hyper Beam, Roar, Psych Up, Weather Ball, Trailblaze, Fake Tears, Sunny Day, Curse, Shadow Ball, Charm, Alluring Voice, Mud-Slap, Dig, Rain Dance, Stored Power, Rest, Calm Mind, Reflect, Light Screen, Power Gem, Dazzling Gleam, Draining Kiss, Flash Cannon, Confuse Ray, Air Slash, U-Turn, Psybeam, Meteor Beam, Tera Blast

any fakemon design tips? i wanna start making fakemon but idk where to rlly start and the fakemon designs i have done feel kinda... bleh
With Pokémon usually the simpler the better! Although even that has some exceptions, usually the legendary Pokémon have a lot more going on design wise than the other pokemon around them.
I know recently there’s been some concept art of combee vs. it’s final design going around focusing on that whole simpler the better concept, and I think looking at different pokemon early concept designs and their final product can help a lot as well to figure out what makes a Pokémon look like a Pokémon.

i made a fakemon :D
ID: Picture depicts a strange little creature that resembles a cross between a bat and a bird. It's predominantly gray, black, and white, excepting the tips of its feathers which are red and its helmet, which is yellow and curved like the beak of another pokemon, Toucannon, and has blue eyespots.
Text on the picture reads:
Quillusion
Dark
Originally from Alola, Quillusion is an invasive species in other regions. It uses its natural camouflage to confuse predators of Pokemon like Wattrel and Rookidee before it attacks.
End ID.
