Today I finally finished the fanbinding project I started back in October 😅
This is a fanbind of Atlas, my favorite ever Spirk fanfiction and a loving portrait of the mote of sunlight that is AOS Jim Kirk. This fic was written by @distractedkat and can be read on AO3 (Tumblr isn’t letting me add a link on mobile.)
The text block was kettle-stitched and typeset completely from scratch in Word, and the dust jacket was designed in Canva Pro. I realized I forgot to take a picture without the dust jacket, but it’s cloth bound in a navy linen bookcloth from Amazon.
I’m really proud of how tightly this bind came out compared to my wonky first attempt! Now my partner and I can reread this amazing story in physical format for years to come 🥰

My first REALLY tiny book, a bind of Four of Swords. A sextodecimo! This lil guy is about 3" x 2 1/4" and is bound with actual cards from the miniature edition RWS deck. Because of the fun tarot imagery I'd been wanting to bind this one, but it's so short, just about 5000 words, so it had to go really little :3
Printed on pop-tone white from French, spine and sword detail done with HTV. I printed the main narrative in black and the flashbacks in blue, for visual separation, and the endpapers are of artwork done for this fic by the incredible @sandwichartistdatzu !!

So I got in to bookbinding a few months ago and finally made a collection of all my batjokes stories. Since money is tight I told myself to stick to only supplies I already owned, so while these wouldn’t be my first choice of endpapers for this material, I still think the skulls are cute. The cover art was hand foiled with a foil quill pen and took a little under 3.5 hours.
Huge shoutout to everyone in the Renegade server for lending me their opinions and advice while I designed this little chonker 🙏🏻💜

A Leap of Faith by Misery_C_Epicaricacy & Ynnéalay
Merlin confesses his magic, upending the trust between him and Arthur; when he goes missing from Camelot, a conflicted Arthur must reckon with his fears and prejudices as Merlin’s life is put at stake.
Fandom: Merlin (TV) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Archive Warning: Graphic Depictions Of Violence Category: Gen Relationship: Merlin & Arthur Pendragon, Minor Gwaine & Arthur Pendragon, Minor Gwaine & Merlin Words: 40,475
Fanbinding of A Leap of Faith. Process, commentary, and additional pictures under the cut ♥
First of all, thank you to all the lovely folks from the @renegadepublishing discord for enthusiastically encouraging me to fanbind my own work, though this is not entirely just-mine. This fic was co-written with the awe-inspiring @whoawhataconcept (Misery_C_Epicaricacy on AO3) and this binding is as much a love letter to her writing, her mind, and our creative collaboration as it is to my own contributions.
On: Textblock & Typesetting
I've bound a couple fics at this point, but was saving Garamond for this one because I fell in love with how these particular words look set in Garamond. The headings are done in a simplistic all-caps Calibri with expanded spacing to pay homage to how many hours editing this damn thing were spent looking at the font in question. I've also used font 'Merlin' for the front title page—which I got linked out of the @merlinbingo discord server—and Felix Titling for the interior title page.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The body is printed on EarthChoice colour cream paper, and stitched with red crochet thread.
On: Endpapers
The endpapers were a tricky one for me! They are prints of my own fanart which was not the correct aspect ratio to use as endpapers for a book printed on letter paper. This was also the first large map I created, and if I could go back, there are things I would do differently. But in the end, I decided to use it as-is because I'm proud of it. To fix the sizing issue, I up-sized the map so the width was correct for a letter-sized print, which left a border on the top and bottom of the image—this I filled in with black and red checkerboard pattern to match the banners and standards of Camelot.
Tumblr media
Originally, I wanted it printed on this textured, pearl-finish linen paper, but then the print shop I use didn't have it in a large enough size to do endpapers on and I was heartbroken. I ended up using topkote gloss paper by Oji.
On: Endbands
Hand-sewn in red and gold crochet thread. I redid these like three times to find a core I liked, and ended up doing them over tightly rolled paper.
The Dust Jacket
Tumblr media
I'm not a graphic designer, so the jacket design is simplistic. It includes a cover, back cover (with a 'praise for' section), and two inside flaps (which contain the fic summary and author bios). I took some cues from this dust jacket post. It's printed on a thicker weight of topkote paper by Oji, this time with a dull finish.
Closing Thoughts
I'm so proud of how this turned out! It's my best work yet in terms of straight-ness of the spine/cover paper, and I learned a lot about printing. Lots of firsts for me here, and I feel that every time I make a book, I improve. I've gifted this copy to my co-author, Misery. Seeing her flip through it, and seeing it on our shelf, is giving me a lot of joy today!

I am obsessed, in awe, humbled, honored, and feeling many other emotions over @serpentsnestpress gorgeous bookbinding of my fic Becoming His Mobius.
The cover! The font! The front and back inside covers being orange and green! The TVA and Loki series vibes are immaculate. It is perfect.
The attention to detail is stunning. My brain is still on overload seeing my fic in the physical form.
(I am also again laughing at how what I intended to be a “one-shot fanfic of my own fanfic” clocks in at 300 pages 😅)
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Easily one of my most treasured possessions.

A few months ago I was asked by a client to bind Something In The Orange by @randomwordsandstormydays and @insomniamemoirs and I was happy to take on the commission (with permission from the authors).
This is by far the largest book that I've ever made. The final total was 528 pages, and even using relatively thin paper it still ended up as a hefty book.
I learned a lot making this and it's helped me to learn what does and doesn't work for formatting and binding a book of this size.
I was very happy with how the typesetting turned out on this. I'm not in the CoD fandom, so I worked closely with the client to make sure that the formatting and images worked with the story. They seemed very happy with the final result.
The one thing that I wish I had the skill to do would have been to make a dust jacket for this. The checkerboard book cloth is gorgeous, but I don't work with vinyl so I couldn't get the title on the cover. Something to think about for future projects.

Started a little over half a year ago, I have finally completed my first “books in books” project! There’s elation, there’s pride, and there’s a sense of relief in the project turning out pretty much how I’d hoped it would from the start. Although instead of just one series tucked into a book, I’ve two!
This six (seven?) book set features two series by @argyleheir, both canon divergent from the Dracula 2020 Netflix series (which itself is already a canon divergent off of Dracula). Be warned, they are both very explicate.
A Gentleman Vampire’s Dossier [AO3] is the 4 book series- each book exactly 5k- done in black with spattered edges, hand sewn headbands, home made cover paper, and home marbled end pagers. It was done first, completed in... December?
House of Dracula (Fearful Symmetry AU) [AO3] is the 2 book series- both ~13k- done in red suede on bible paper with home marbled end pages. It was completed early April.
The enclosing book was painstakingly cut throughout April to early May (worked on during HavenCon!), covered in leather with cranberry alcohol ink staining the edges. I’ll have a post later bemoaning the process in greater detail.

It's a little tight because I didn't give the proper allowance on the spine, but otherwise, it's done! I just have to figure out how to make these top two corner protectors stay on.

The meaning of mistletoe by Endrina, first volume of The secret language of plants. @llendrinall I have read this charming story several times. The voice of the narration, with its fairy tale reminiscence, is something I really like. Endrina is a great author, it is worth reading their novel length fics.
Typeset by Lindsey P. For those inexperienced in fandom, this story can be read for free at AO3.
What I like:
It's quite a simple binding, but something in it remind me of the old editions of my childhood. Reading it give me a special kind of joy, it's both, the comfort of this story and the childhood-like feeling this tome brings me while holding it
What I could do better:
I had problems with the guillotining of the edges, but went ahead [I had already lost a lot of material with a failed first printing]. I couldn't say what happened, but - for me - that mistake gives a Je ne sais quoi to the edition that I love. I don't know why, but when I was a child, back in the 70's, I had many books with the same feeling. The paper was a bit thicker than usual, and the edges weren't perfectly cut. I didn't realize, until I sat down to read this edition, that this binding conjures up memories of my childhood.
Special thanks: During the process, I had a severe case of printer hiccups (Or binder's brain hiccups, to be more precise) but @getfuckedblr hold my hand and helped me.
@llendrinall
[If I learned to bind, you can do it too. It's not that difficult... ok a little at first, but it is doable. Don't buy fic binds, ok? It spoils fandom's fun]

Love in a Time of the Zombie Apocalypse by @rizzlewrites
Featuring a tiny edit of some fanart Rizzle commissioned from @artofcrumbs (I had permission from both to edit)
This bind was intense in every imaginable way. And the outcome was worth every drop of tears, sweat and quite literally [fake] blood.
I hope you guys enjoy! I am most active on Instagram if you would like to keep up with my binds!

...So as a multimedia fan fiction artist, the reports about motherfuckers stealing our work and profitting off of it on Etsy to the tune of over $150 a book (Manacled, the Dramione fic) sickens me to my core.
Fuckers like that don't understand the concept of stealing. We as fan fic authors understand it, and the bulk of us are merely borrowing characters for our own purposes. Theft occurs when you start making money off IP...even if the IP was 'stolen' to begin with.
Fan fic authors are still protected under copyright laws despite our work being borrowed characters/IP. Our works still belong to us and are still copyrighted to us. If I wanted to bind up a copy of Afterburn to GIVE to a fan, I would be in my right to do so, since it's mine and I'm not making any money off of it. But here we are, and some cocksucking asshole in Texas thinks it's alright to print a fandomer's popular work and sell it.
I know Afterburn will never, ever be popular enough for someone else to bind it and sell it...thank the gods. But srsly, this shit is insane. Don't fucking do it. Don't fucking buy a copy of Manacled, or any other fan fiction that was bound and sold on Etsy or ebay. If I ever walked into your house and saw that shit on your bookshelf, you can bet on an aggressive verbal assault about THEFT/stealing fandom work and jeopardizing ALL of us fic writers because YOU fucking bought it and contributed to the theft of someone else's work.
Fuck you if you bought a copy. Srsly, fuck...you.
....With that said, I have shit to do today that I don't wanna do, but I think the walk will give me the fuel to keep writing the Jairo I'm finishing up but god damn, this shit. What the fuck is wrong with people? What the fuck is wrong with people?

The newest quarto binding, featuring my first hand-wound headbands - the four finished stories in the watchmen Carrefour AU. Cover design meant to evoke the idea of crossroads, along with marigolds, which were an important image in the story. I wrote these collectively with Daylilymoon back in the day, and it's one of my fondest memories. Daylily if you are still around, please reach out to me, I'd love to make you a copy too--and I won't even fuck up the spelling on the spine, for your version DX
Text is Sylfean, Trajan Pro for the titles and drop caps, Caslon Antique for the cover text. Chapter header graphic and back cover version of the Kalfu veve by me. The text block was printed on some rustic, thick grain paper that I bought ages ago at Meiningers and I have no idea what the brand was, but it seemed appropriate for an 1800s era story. Cover and endpapers are art paper also from the art store. Siser metal HTV as usual.
I cannot believe I misspelled the spine, aughhhhhhhhh
