Ten years ago some friends asked me to sing this at their wedding and I recorded this little voice memo so they could hear my very rough version of the song... I’ve always loved it and thought it was time to send it out into the world :) 

There is also a beautiful video to accompany the song. The footage is courtesy of Deb Mostert Studio and family and is part of a 25 minute film her Opa made in 1955 as the family migrated from the Netherlands for a new life in Australia.

A few years ago I went to an exhibition of Deb’s in Brisbane about Migration and saw this footage playing on loop. I remember standing there silently watching, completely mesmerised by the scenes playing in front of me. 

First Day of My Life and this footage seemed to go hand in hand and I am thankful to be able to share these images with all of you.

My favorite music video is for the song First Day of my Life by Bright Eyes.

It came out in 2005. This video has queer couples - gay and trans - as well as interracial couples, and it is just incredibly romantic the entire time. There's a pregnant woman pressing a speaker up to her belly so her baby can hear the song. There's a woman holding a portrait of her deceased partner. There's young people, there's old people. There are single people.

This video really sums up what it's all about.
