I always thought it was weird that the speaker of "Jesus in LA" refers to "[shaking] hands with the devil" and actually getting good advice ("It's a crying shame you came all this way / 'Cause you won't find Jesus in LA"). When you think about its basis in Alec's experience with the music industry and how he mentions that he wrote this when he was 18, Columbia Records dropped him, and he was wondering where to turn next, it becomes clear that the reason the speaker refers to the devil as giving advice not because the people he was with at the time gave him that advice, but because he learned that implicitly through the experience. This also has support in his next album (Un)Commentary when he stated that he actually wrote "Devil Doesn't Bargain" about the music industry--both songs make the same comparison.
