Despite its undignified name, Muddy Creek is a lovely mountain stream that normally runs fast and clear on its steep descent to Cheat River. But after a week of heavy rain in NC-WV, the stream looked a bit murky yesterday. Not even the sediment washing away from the mountains dims its beauty in my eyes. And the enchanting, moss-encrusted forest along its bank holds its own late summer treasures.
From top: great blue lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica), which pairs beautifully with cardinal flower to provide late summer color in a native wildflower garden; white wood aster (Eurybia divaricata), which is the most common of the shade-loving white asters in this area; crooked-stemmed aster (Symphyotrichum prenanthoides), also known as zigzag aster, whose clasping, spatula-shaped leaves distinguish it from big-leaf aster, another woods-loving aster with lavender flowers; blue-stemmed goldenrod (Solidago caesia), whose spreading, yellow-flowered stems provide stunning late-season color in a native wildflower garden; an intensely-green collage of moss, woodland stonecrop (Sedum ternatum), Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) and heartleaf foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia), which I am trying hard to reproduce in my own native wildflower shade garden; the shaggy-maned stem of Coker's Amanita (Amanita cokeri), one of the most impressive mushrooms of Appalachia's summer forests; beech-drops (Epifagus virginiana), a parasitic plant that grows and subsists on beach tree roots; the bright red berries of false Solomon's seal (Maianthemum racemosum); yellow jewelweed (Impatiens pallida), whose explosive seed pods give the plant its other common name, pale touch-me-not; and narrow-leaved tick-trefoil (Desmodium paniculatum), also known as panicled tick-trefoil, a late summer pea whose sticky seed pods commonly hitch rides on shoes and boots.

Prayers•
In general
Beautiful, black-eyed Nyx, cloaked in darkness, older than old, daughter of misty Chaos, mother of great and mighty spirits, I call to you. Ever-present one, you live in the shadows; we know you in the dusk, in the comfort of the night. Broad-winged Nyx, you clasp the hand of bright Hemera, each eve and morn, you greet her with love and sorrow for only in those moments may you embrace your child. Goddess, awesome one, in your realm are we all unblemished, in your realm do lovers’ promises ring true, in your realm are all things possible, if only until daybreak. Nyx, I honor you.
Small prayer
“Nyx, mother of the night, mother of sleep, mother of death: Might your darkness embrace me Might your energy caress me Might you be mine and Might I be yours Blessed be.“
In general
O ancient Goddess, born of Chaos and steeped in shadow, I honor you now and always. With eyes which have watched the beginnings of all that is, see us now embracing your sleep and mystery. With power that strikes fear into the hearts of the most revered of Gods,
I remember your strength when I am searching for my own. In the starless night where light shines not i will give my thanks to your Greatness, And surrender to the dark.

Kushiel’s Legacy GIF sets || Cecilie Laveau-Perrin
In her prime, Cecilie Laveau-Perrin had been an adept of Cereus House; indeed, she had trained under my old mistress, the Dowayne. She was one of the few who had attained the pinnacle of success for a member of the Night Court, attracting sufficient following among peers of the realm that she was able to set up her own household upon making her marque. For seven years, she was the toast of royalty. Peers and poets flocked to her gatherings, and she held her own court, bestowing the favor of her bedchamber at her own choosing; or not at all.  … By light of day, Cecilie Laveau-Perrin was tall and slender, with fine bones and pale blue eyes, the color of a new-opened lobelia. It is a funny thing, with adepts of Cereus House, how the underlying steel is revealed in those who do not wither and fade. In this, she reminded me of the Dowayne, but she was younger, and kinder. Still, she was a harsh taskmistress, and set us to read and memorize the first of the great texts of which Delaunay had spoken.

Dwalin/Bilbo fic recs
for @booknerd0612
this are most of my bookmarks for these two ;)
Dwalin & Bilbo - bc this one made me cry
In From the Rain      by yellow_craion
Dwalin travels back to the Blue Mountains, cold, wet and miserable, when he is faced with an unexpected kindness.
Bilbo takes in a dwarf trope, basically Warnings for reference / implied violence, prostitution and i suppose extortion but all in the past
Dwalin/Bilbo
Key to my House (Key to my Heart)  by JackQuaker
"It was the act of bodily union that achieved marriage, and after which the indissoluble bond was complete." -Laws and Customs Among the Eldar
Marriage rituals are the one thing Dwarves and Elves have in common.  Hobbits do things differently.  Bilbo might have appreciated knowing that sooner.
Protective Nature   by silverneko9lives0
Everyone survives the BOTFA and Bilbo stays in Erebor. However, it seems that all the nobles suddenly want to seduce Bilbo and not all of them have honorable intentions. Dwalin may just be the Captain of the Guard, but he'll be damned if he allows anyone to hurt their Burglar. He makes it his unofficial job to chase off any unsavory characters.
Swallow by Headwig1010
A tale of love, swearing and food.
So much food.
Together, Despite It All    by jcrycolr3wradc
Whatever Bilbo was expecting when he opened his door, Gandalf, Lobelia, a noisy neighbor trying to intrude on his dinner, he was most certainly not expecting a hulking figure of a dwarf.
 In Silence    by PurrpleCat
"„Dwalin, son of Fundin,” Dain says above him, his voice devoid of any emotion, „You are banished forthwith from the Kingdom of Erebor under pain of death.” Dwalin can almost hear the smile in his voice as he says: „Bring me his beard.”
He can hear Balin scream, but he cannot recognize the words – blood is pounding in his ears, horror making him freeze. He closes his eyes tightly, swallows. This is what he wants, he reminds himself. This is what he deserves.
Thorin, he thinks as one of the guards yanks his head back and puts a blade to his chin. Forgive me."
Marry That One    by Aloneindarknes7
Balin had always advised his brother to marry someone who could cook.
Marry Me?    by beargirl1393
When the dwarves come to invite Bilbo to join their quest, he does so readily. There's just one problem. In order for him to travel with the Company, he needs at least one family member to be with him. Since Bilbo has no close family (and no other hobbits would want to go on an adventure) the dwarves decide that he must marry one of them, in order to create family ties. Dwalin is chosen to marry the hobbit, and even though this is a marriage of convenience he hopes that, eventually, he and his new husband will find love with each other.
Chronicles of a Warrior and a Burglar    by silverneko9lives0
For Hobbit Kink Meme:
"Dwalin’s a crusty warrior with a marshmallow interior, so what I want to see is Bilbo forced to marry him. Scenario is as follows: none of the dwarves are traveling alone, that is, without family. So, Bilbo can’t travel without family either, and we know the easiest way of creating family ties is by marriage. Cue the dwarves discussing the issue among themselves (with or without Gandalf) to see who would be willing to marry the Hobbit. Bombur and Gloin are out, Balin is too old, Kili and Ori are too young, and Dwalin just goes, “Did anyone ask the Hobbit what he would like?” Unbeknownst to the Dwarves, Bilbo has eavesdropped on the conversation, and when they follow Dwalin’s advice, the Hobbit, who really wants to go on the adventure, promptly asks Dwalin to marry him. To everyone’s great shock. Points if: the relationship between them develops slowly, if they are honest about slowly falling in love, and if it ends happily ever after with everyone alive."
With Thorin/Bilbo/Dwalin
Synergy by    alkjira
“Would you want to fuck him?” Dwalin breathed against the side of Bilbo’s neck as he ground the Hobbit down on his now aching dick. “Or would you just be looking to have him take you? You seem to like this. Imagine how much better it would be if it was Thorin rubbing against you.”
Wherein Dwalin and Bilbo are both in love with Thorin and we end up with scenes like the above.
With Nori/Bilbo/Dwalin
the sweet honey that sticks them together by Thorinsmut (FormlessVoidbeast)
It might look a bit odd from the outside, but Dwalin and Bilbo and Nori have a relationship that works for them, and they couldn't be happier.
Enjoy this one-shot of some established-relationship porn.
With Fem!Bilbo
Songless    by Timfleur_Salisbury_Cornwallis
Birabelle Baggins was many things; well-read, generous to those who deserved it, an excellent cook, twelve-year reigning champion of the Buckland Spring Festival Conkers Competition, and quite proficient with a needle and thread if called upon. However, she was not what others of her race would call “respectable”.
In the Dark    by  Madkat89
After the Battle, Bella is taken into custody and imprisoned for life in the dungeons of Erebor for her crimes against Thorin Oakenshield. However, the company doesn't even know that she's alive, believing that she fell on the field of battle before they could make amends. Will the truth come out or will she forever be lost to them in the depths of Erebor
After Famine    by Magniflorious
From this kink meme prompt: Female Dwarves, being rather manly looking, don't have a lot going on in the chest area. There is enough there to nurse a child, but it's more flat muscle than bulging fat.
Which is why Bilba's ample bosom is so distracting to the Dwarves. It's like being given a triple chocolate cake when you're used to eating apples for dessert - it's just too amazing to handle.
Bonus points: One of the Dwarves gets to touch her boobs (after asking of course) and comes immediately.
Dankûna    by Cuptivate
Small candle, burning bright.

Sneak Peek: A Diamond in the Garden
New chapter Monday, I hope you enjoy this sneak peak! So I think I mentioned this in the AN last week on AO3 but the timeline is a little different so Frodo is already born and we get to meet him this chapter!! Hope you all enjoy.
I also want to thank @rosasynstylae for being a great beta. (also check out her fics they are great!)
Chapter 4: A New Addition to Bag End
“Yes, my dear boy.”
“Are they real?  The King and his company?”
Primrose looked at Bilbo as though she was trying to hold back laughter but waited for the other hobbit to answer.  Frodo was not quite certain what was so funny to auntie Prim.
Bilbo asked Frodo to retrieve a map on his desk.  When Frodo brought it over he sat next to Bilbo on the settee and Bilbo pointed at various places.  Here is the Shire and the Weather Hills (all places Frodo knew about already).  And then Bilbo pointed to a large mountain range to the West of the Shire.
“This is the Blue Mountain, before the quest to reclaim Erebor, King Thorin and his people lived here.  The Shire folks trade with them sometimes.  Now it is almost empty, as the dwarves there go back to their true home, Erebor.”  Then Bilbo pointed to one mountain all the way on the other side of the map (it looked very faraway, thought Frodo).  “Here is the Lonely Mountain, the Kingdom of Erebor.  That is where King Thorin Oakenshield lives.  He is very real, my dear boy.”
Frodo looked at his uncle Bilbo then. He thought Bilbo looked sad, almost the same sad that Frodo was when he thought of his parents.  Like he wanted someone he lost to come back.  The young hobbit was young but he was not stupid, no matter what nasty aunt Lobelia said.

An IRL Update!
Just a general update on things, and some fun life hacky adjacent type things!
It's been a busy summer for sure, been trying to find something fun to do every weekend so I can hibernate guilt free in the winter. Some highlights:
Concerts! Including Styx in the rain, which was very fun! Learned that earplugs at concerts are 100% a must for anything inside, if only for the crowd noise. We used cheap Harbor Freight ones, like $5 for 100, worked pretty good!
Camping! which was delayed due to a combo thunderstorm/flood. We made hobo pies! Recipe: 1 cast iron pie iron (~$20) 2 slices of Hillbilly (TM) Bread, or similar soft wheat/white bread (think wonder bread texture) Fillings (i highly recommend PBJ for sweet, or cheese and pepperoni for savory, melty is ideal) Optional: Non-stick cooking spray (Spray inside of pie iron), put bread in each side, add filling. Clamp pie iron. Place in hot coals for about 5-10 minutes each side, flipping once. The edges should be dark, but not actively on fire. Remove iron from fire and unclamp, turn pie out onto plate and let cool until heat comfort level is reached. Eat!
Gardening! My lobelia, obedient plant, vervain, verbena, harebell, and anise hyssop flowered! I picked blueberries! My petunias have lived! I successfully transplanted lemon balm from cuttings (to a pot, the stuff is very aggressive and I'd like to bring it inside in the winter)/I somehow kept the "finicky" plants alive, but killed a nanny-berry (a notoriously hardy viburnum variety). The squirrels keep digging up my wild bergamot! But a 100% increase in bees and bugs, as was the goal! We have fireflies in our 1/4 acre city lot, which is very nice! (to see more bugs/birds, find out your city's grass cut limit and hang tight to it. Where we live it's a pretty generous 10", so lot's of "weed" plants can come up. We actually need to remove a lot of the beech and maples that are growing in places they really shouldn't (like 6" from the house foundation), but we've let all the clovers/violets/asters hang out. We also use a push reel mower and an electric weed whip instead of a normal two stroke mower, which both do a worse job of mowing grass but a better job of not annihilating the things we want growing!
Art fairs! I bought so many mugs, I'm going to need a second mug hutch! (My first mug hutch was the first piece of furniture I bought because I wanted it, not needed it. It is red, with dark green insides. The doors stick and the glass is cracked, but I adore it!). I collect mugs, but I may need to purge if I keep this up. I also bought a "rice vest". It's like a hot sock, but a vest. It has a bunch of little sections full of rice so the weight is evenly distributed. You can microwave it or freeze it. Great for my tense shoulders! I love it so much, I attached a picture!
Tumblr media
Art classes! I took multi-media storytelling, which was basically working with collages! I made some pretty cool pieces, and it inspired me to start cleaning my side of the basement for an art studio. I'm going to sign up for more classes in the fall, see if I can get into the pottery courses (our local art center has all sorts of classes for adults, but the pottery ones are the most popular and actually have an order you need to take them to unlock them in). 100% recommend, it was nice doing something creative with other people.
Birding! Not too seriously, but I got a pocket guide and Miles bought some nice binoculars (the lad loves optics and lenses, it's the fun part of photography for him) and we take 'em on hikes! Highlights so far are some cedar wax wings (not uncommon, but not something we see a ton around where we live), a bald eagle, several great blue herons (the nature center by us is a big river/wetland, so lots of birds stop over), and a black crowned night heron. We also got caught in a surprise thunderstorm while looking at some red-winged blackbirds, which was an experience!
That's really for it, it's just been a busy time and I wanted to share! Have a wonderful day!

Pressing on with the great Good Omens reading, I am quite in love with our favorite deliveryman's doing his duty by Death:
He was halfway across when a German juggernaut came around the corner, its driver crazed on caffeine, little white pills, and EEC transport regulations. He watched its receding bulk. Cor, he thought, that one nearly had me. Then he looked down at the gutters. Oh, he thought. YES, agreed a voice from behind his left shoulder, or at least from behind the memory of his left shoulder. The delivery man turned, and looked, and saw. At first he couldn't find the words, couldn't find anything, and then the habits of a working lifetime took over and he said, "Message for you, sir." FOR ME? "Yes, sir." He wished he still had a throat. He could have swallowed, if he still had a throat. "No package, I'm afraid, Mister... uh, sir. It's a message." DELIVER IT, THEN. "It's this, sir. Ahem. Come and see." FINALLY. There was a grin on its face, but then, given the face, there couldn't have been anything else. THANK YOU, it continued. I MUST COMMEND YOUR DEVOTION TO DUTY. "Sir?" The late delivery man was falling through a gray mist, and all he could see were two spots of blue, that might have been eyes, and might been distant stars. DON'T THINK OF IT AS DYING, said Death, JUST THINK OF IT AS LEAVING EARLY TO AVOID THE RUSH. The delivery man had a brief moment to wonder whether his new companion was making a joke, and to decide that he wasn't; and then there was nothing.
There's something delightfully macabre about this whole scene but so mundane at the same time. It's understated. It's full of a certainty that this is just how things are. And it lends such an understated but inarguable power to Death here, a finality that fits quite well.
As for the deliveryman it presents him as so thoroughly non-special, it really packs a punch because this could be any one o us. He seems like a hobbit. Not one of the heroes but just one of those doing their best in the midst of it all; a Fatty Bolger or a Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, perhaps.
Plus, it's funny. It's just hilarious and twisting-a-knife-in-the-gut oofiness all at the same time.
*************
Using a slightly different part of my brain, I'm intrigued by the description of Pestilence Pollution. The character is literally Mr. White (here, Chalk), and while I guess his race was never spelled out, assumptions defaulting as they do, I always thought he was meant to be racially white as well. The show gives us a brilliant nonbinary version of the character, but also one played by an Asian (specifically Filipino) actress.
Which is interesting, for a start. because of the politics around pollution and global warming and the role Asian countries like China becoming more developed contribute to that. In reality Western countries are responsible for so much more, but connecting pollution with an Asian face seems to tap into something slightly uncomfortable, at least for me.
To be clear, I doubt it was intentional, and Lourdes was so brilliant in the role, I can't really imagine anyone else doing so well. But seeing a character my brain insists on imagining as a white man, probably a middle-aged white man in a suit, definitely hits differently.
*************
Finally, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out the River Uck is an actual place, and if Wikipedia can be believed its signs are subject to exactly the kind of vandalism one would hope. But even without that, what a glorious place-name for this scene. I like imagining Neill and Terry giggling over it back in the day, or at least smiling gently at the world's neverending absurdities.
*************
That's all I've got time for this weekend, reading-wise, unfortunately. It is nice to get my readerly toes wet again, though.

A selection of late summer wildflowers growing in the riparian zone along the Monongahela River at the Friendship Hill National Historic Site.
From top: Paleleaf woodland sunflower (Helianthus strumosus), also known as pale-leaved sunflower, distinguished by long leaf petioles and a pale leaf underside; common sneezeweed (Helenium autumnale), a water-loving aster whose dried leaves were once used to make snuff; cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis), whose scarlet, five-lobed flowers draw hummingbirds as pollinators; the closely-related great blue lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica), which early settlers once used as a treatment for syphilis (wishful thinking); and blue mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum), or wild ageratum, a native aster that has become popular as a garden plant.
Tumblr media
As a note, about a dozen sunflowers call NC-WV - SW PA home and they readily hybridize, often complicating identification. Pale-leaved sunflower has a tall, branching structure up to 7 feet in height and dense clusters of large flowers. In addition to long petioles and a pale leaf underside, this sunflower has a smooth stem with a whitish bloom to it. It's a very beautiful mid-to-late summer aster and one of my favorite wildflowers of Central Appalachia.

In this heat, look to your native plants! In my gardens, the ones doing the best with minimal fuss are lanceleaf figwort, echinacea, blue mistflower, anise hyssop, great blue lobelia, penstemon, and common milkweed. That doesn’t mean they don’t need water! Out of that group, hyssop definitely needs some attention. But they’re supporting pollinators like champs and tend to be more drought resistant, and many will get their bearings next year.

Hey! I love your blog so much, and I'm so happy that I found it (it's helped a lot)! I was wondering if you could do a list of flowers that mean (or fall into the category of/are similar to): Obsession, Obsessive love, 'til death do us part, I want your attention, I belong to you, you belong to me, etc., etc. Along with this, I'd also like to know what flowers are native to New Jersey (And also which ones bloom in the fall, if any?) Thank you, and have a lovely day!
That should be possible with some creativity given that obsession and bonding don’t exist as meanings themselves, but it leans well enough into the Victorian flower language to get something out of it still. Hope there’s something in here that works for your story.
