Beast Fables - Wyverns, Gryphons and other Avian Chimera Part 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the big worldbuilding focus of this month! Wyverns, Griffons and other Avian Chimera, for my Beast Fables setting.
Context: Beast Fables is my worldbuilding project, where everyone on land is some form of werebeast, while merfolk are the denizens of the seas and oceans. In the context of Beast fables, Chimeras are basically the temporary forms of animals that also have the Gift of Transformation as Werefolk do, usually involving borrowing traits from OTHER animals.
Birds have a multitude of chimeric morphs, the most famous are the universal Wyvern, a form all birds can transform into, and the Griffon, an iconic morph emblazoned in various segments of Werefolk culture.

Warning: Admin is back on their headcanon bullshit
So, I bash Gruff a lot for being a terrible guardian to Gallus.
And…. Yeah, he absolutely is.
But I actually want to be nice to the decaying old buzzard for a change and paint him in a somewhat more sympathetic light.
Because… I do genuinely believe he cares about Gallus.
Now, unfortunately, just caring is not enough to be a good guardian. It is a skill, and you need to be competent at it. And Gruff just… isn’t. He is, in no way, shape, or form, emotionally, mentally, or even physically capable of keeping up with the demands of providing for a child. Much less a hormone addled teenager. To say nothing of Griffonstone’s lack of infrastructure giving absolutely no benefit to that particular issue.
But… seriously think about that. When Twilight opened her school’s doors to all the other races of the world, she didn’t pick and choose the first set of those non-pony students who would serve as a proof of concept to the idea. These kids, essentially unofficial representatives of their homelands, were chosen by the leaders of those races at Twilight’s open invitation.
And Gruff chose Gallus. A homeless orphan.
Now, Gruff is a character who’s been portrayed before as being wistful for Griffonstone’s golden age. He knows Griffonstone is on a downward spiral, and he hates it.
So, here’s his chance to send a representative, however unofficial, to cull favor for the griffon’s from Equestria’s public, a great chance at getting a foothold to barter for economic aid.
And he sends a kid who is, on a purely practical level, completely politically worthless to Gruff.
Because I think, on some level, Gruff knows he’s a terrible guardian and he knows Gallus deserves better than him. The greatest kindness Gruff could do for him is send him somewhere where others are far more willing to be kind.
Because he genuinely wanted the best for Gallus, and he was smart enough to know that ‘the best for Gallus’… wasn’t him.

Hexapods
There are no mammalian hexapods.
Most hexapods are reptiles and birds (or birdlike reptiles) but there are some amphibians.
Amphibians are typically confined to cave systems.
Some species (not griffonoids) have three sets of walking legs.
Some species have two sets of walking legs and a set of wings.
Some species have legs and wings (or legs and legs), plus a set of raptorial grasping claws.
Most griffonoids and winged dragonoids are carnivores and insectivores.
Most dragonoids are pursuit predators.
Some mid-sized griffonoids are scavengers.
Griffons and griffonoids are social, and form packs or flocks. Some griffons are territorial, especially when brooding.
Dragons are isolated, but some species mate for life and very few species form basks of 3-5 individuals.
Dragons are usually ambush predators.
The largest dragons and griffons have been known to occasionally predate on humanoids.

Encounter in Dungeon Level Three, Room 2: Three Griffons contemplating a tattered banner (from Under the Storm Giant’s Castle, D&D adventure by Thomas A McCloud, Judges Guild, 1979). The description assumes some familiarity with heraldic colors, but what really stands out here is the casual inclusion of an item belonging to characters from a specific fantasy novel that is not mentioned elsewhere in the adventure. This banner in a cloud dungeon below a flying castle somehow belongs to the Dukes of Corwyn (spelled here as Corwin) in Katherine Kurtz's Deryni Rising, the first of the long series of Deryni novels. The author otherwise leaves it to the DM to decide how the game world is connected to Kurtz's fictional setting and what this might mean for future adventures.
Are the players supposed to recognize this banner and its origins? Who are these griffons that are implied to be more intelligent than the usual hybrid animal mounts in D&D, and how would they even communicate the fact that they don't know the banner's history?
Other encounters in this module include "Ariels of Moab" (small hybrids of snake, scorpion and dragonfly parts, but named for biblical warriors mentioned in certain translations of the Old Testament) and "Satan himself, disguised as a demonic worm" (who is mostly here to observe, but is capable of assuming humanoid form and fighting as a 15th level magic-user/18th level cleric).

The brothers Harkin and Denos Falstane of the Arrovale Marshes. Sir Harkin is the Knight Warden of the marshes, and his younger brother Sir Denos helps train their gryphons. When the party found and hatched a gryphon egg, they tried at first to keep the creature around, but eventually they set it free and later found it in Sir Denos' care. (They are now hatching a dragon egg… wish them luck!)
The Falstane family's coat of arms features a capybara on a nest of gryphon eggs, below the noble sword Greensteel belonging to the local baron.

Gargoyle griffons are a domestic species of griffon that, in their natural habitat, prefer to live on mossy and overgrown cliffs. They are known for holding very still for hours at a time, and only move to eat or protect their territory. When living with people, gargoyle griffons prefer to be outside in the sun, and can be so still they are often mistaken for statues or lawn ornaments.
This gives potential invaders a mighty fright, as their deep and throaty honks can shake the ground and rattle windows nearby. Their honks have been described as sounding somewhat like foghorns or trombones.

i love applying biology/zoology/evolution to fictional creatures.
would griffons from different regions evolve to mimic birds in their environment? would the cat half also evolve to be optimized for the environment? a griffon from the maasai mara might be part vulture and part cheetah. it could be part lion, yes, but cheetahs are relatively lightweight for big cats and would have the highest chance of success in flight.
unicorns in colder climates might be built more like draft horses. unicorns in general would probably have curved horns, better for grappling and also less brittle. maybe unicorns in mountainous regions would evolve hooves similar to that of mountain goats, to be able to climb the sheer cliffs with ease.
ents might be biologically similar to crabs or snails, their bark exterior like a protective shell able to root itself in place while the ent soaks up nutrients from the ground. maybe knotholes in its bark are peepholes, little spots for eyes to peer through.
i could write about this kinda stuff for HOURS, meshing reality and fantasy together is so very interesting!!
