any unpopular opinion about Jake or/and Bradley?

Other than the fact that ew, they’re military men?

I think some people like to pigeonhole Jake as this asshole who has very little regard for those around him, and while I agree that he puts on a front, I think it’s also fairly easy to see that he DOES care for those around him.

I think Bradley is what people want Jake to be: the asshole who doesn’t give a shit if what he says hurts people’s feelings.

Make me choose: LoTR (the films) or the books?

Books, hands down!

I love the movies and this is no shade on people who prefer them (you are a legit fan even if you haven't read the books). I found the books through PJ's Fellowship of the Ring and I think they're brilliant adaptations of the trilogy.

That said, Tolkien's writing was so formative to my interests, to how I see the world, to how I write to this day...it's difficult to overstate the impact they had on me. Reading them for the first time got me through some tough times and provided a stepping stone to the medieval literature and history that I studied at university. No matter how widely I read, I always come back to his writing as some of the best I've ever seen.

I love sinking into the deep lore of The Silmarillion or the detailed descriptions in lotr. I feel like even the most minor characters get a bit of depth and nuance. Like one of my fave characters is Ioreth of Minas Tirith and she's just like, this gossipy old lady that doesn't have too big of an overall impact but Tolkien creates such a vivid person just through what she says and how she says it. Or the Faramir/Eowyn romance? It's like under 2k words and still so believable and emotional.

The movies are total comfort food for me but cracking open one of the books is like coming home and all my favorite people are already there and they're reminding me of everything I love in the world. There's just nothing like it.
