Do play with the original spritesets though, the steam ones are notoriously bad at conveying the original expressions

Or just go to youtube and read a playthrough, you'll get the same experience pretty much. A lot of playthroughs use a PS2/PS3 mod that adds voice acting and more professional art, which also makes for a pretty great version of the game (though I still vastly prefer the og artwork)

That said, I understand not having the patience to read a 60 hour visual novel. There is an official manga adaptation which actually covers everything super closely to the source material - it also starts with the Onikakushi arc. I really recommend it!

Sadly the 2006 anime adaptation cuts out a lot of very important plot points, and the new series is the most crackfic ass sequel I've ever seen. So just stay clear of the anime if you want a good first time experience, I'm begging you

Higurashi is my favourite story ever, so it really saddens me that some people's first exposure to it was through lackluster iterations!!

seasonal animes: 16bit sensation s1e1

i decided to give 16bit sensation a shot knowing not much more than 'at some point, the characters talk about dithering'

first episode impressions: ok I admit, this is very cute. it's funny to have an isekai anime that's about as close as it gets to being about my actual line of work. thankfully we are not on the 'milf hypnosis' level, like our games are technically ambitious and fun to work on, but I do share the protagonist's wish to create expansive, elaborate narrative-driven games that is just not really the sort of thing my company is here to make.

much like Eizouken, this is both directly about characters making things, and also an expression of love to a particular era of media. for Eizouken that was 80s-90s scifi anime; here we have 90s eroge for the PC-98, one of the most ambitious eras for visual novels. presentationally, this doesn't have Eizouken's level of charm (but what does?), but it is full of very cute little attention to detail.

for example, in this shot of games from the magical second hand game store - I'm sure someone's already made a list of all these and what they're punning on, but I love this set of slightly corrupted names of movies and PS2 games. the English ones are evident; in kana we've got some like Gorira, Radia the Secret of Blue Water, Michael Quest V, and my favourite has to be Higurashi: When They Don't Cry. Wish my kanji was better so I could pick up on some of the others.

this has got to be the anime sub with the most uses of 'MILF' I've ever seen (crunchyroll rip with halfassed typesetting). if you're wondering: 催眠 saimin = hypnosis, 人妻 hitodsuma = married woman (I assume with a similar connotation to 'MILF' in English). my dictionary's preferred translation for MILF is 熟女 jukujo, though!

overall, it's hilarious that 'the early 90s' is now old enough for a nostalgia-driven time travel isekai. and the 'look, here's a 90s thing' jokes are so cute and dorky. I mean they go over my head because I was a baby when this show is set, but still lmao.

That said, I wish they'd taken a more 90s anime style with the character designs and backgrounds. of course, we face the limit that today's digital compositing pipelines just do not give you the same feeling as the cel era without a ton of work, which wouldn't be economical for this 'niche form of autism' anime. it's all solid and there are a few really nice cuts, but this isn't a show that's selling itself on flashy animation in general.

think i'm gonna watch the rest of this. it's very much a high-concept 'can be summarised in a sentence' anime, but 'autistic himejoshi bishōjo-game otaku time travels back into the 90s' is something that scratches enough itches that yeah, ok, i will bite!

A/N: Instead of the servants being cursed into objects I’m gonna change it to being them cursed with some sickness. I’m also going off of the animated one from 1991 cause that was the one I saw again recently, and I don’t know if any of the other movies have anything different in them.

The post that inspired this

There was always such a strange person who walked throughout the town, yet beautiful none-the-less; Y/n, the child of an inventor in the village.

Everyone thought Y/n’s father was insane with his out of the world idea’s sometimes, but Y/n? Most everyone loved them.

Once again, they walked through the little village, daydreaming and humming to them-self. “Good morning, Y/n! Would you like anything from the bakery today?” The baker questioned politely.

“Not today, thanks!” You replied cheerfully, and continued on your way; the library was your favourite place, it had so many interesting things to read and learn about and it took up most of your time. You arrived and opened the door, the bell ringing as you did. You greeted the owner in a sweet voice; “Hello, Mr. Itadori. How are you?”.

“Oh! Good morning, Y/n! I’m fine, thanks. Here for another book I presume?” He chuckled at the end of his sentence.

“I am,” you laughed lightly; “I’m here for Higurashi Gou again.” Itadori stalled for a moment. “Really?” He asked, incredulously. “How many times have you read that again?” He questioned with a bewildered look on his face. Rolling your eyes playfully, you stepped forwards to take if off the shelf.

“You know, if you really like it so much, you can take it.” He offered, turning to you; “Wait really? Thank you so much!” Hugging him, you thanked Itadori again and went on your way.

“Hello? I’m home!” You called out to your father. He was usually working on projects whenever you saw him, so you assumed he was down in the workshop. “Y/n? Welcome back, did you get the book you like?”

“I did,” You replied; “What are you working on now?” Taking a look at it, it was a strange looking thing, big and had weird proportions on it too.

“It’s a wood chopper!” He exclaims proudly, you nodded and smiled. He put a piece of wood in the machine to demonstrate, and it immediately started cutting it into smaller chunks. “Huh, that got the job done much faster,” he grinned; “You’ll certainly get the winning prize at tomorrows festival.”

“Oh right!” His eyes went wide, “The festival, I might be late!” He through his stuff together and hurried outside. “See you soon, Y/n! Make sure to stay safe!” And with that, he was off.

You walked around the house with your book, before sitting in an armchair; something about today didn’t feel right, like everything was quiet. To quiet. But it was probably just your imagination and you enjoyed the peace. Well, that was until there was a loud, obnoxious knock at the front door.

Sighing, you got up and made your way to the door to see just who was disturbing your precious time. Looking through the peephole, you sighed, again, and opened the door.

“Good morning, Mahito. How can I help you today?” You questioned, slightly annoyed at seeing him so early in the morning, though you didn’t really wanna know what he was there for, you just wanted him to go on his merry way.

“Well,” He started, fixing his clothes and looking you in the eyes; “Today is the day we get married, and you become my partner.”

Your eyes went wide. Marriage? With him? No! This has to be a joke right? “Marriage? You’re not serious right?” You asked, hoping he was kidding even tho deep down you knew he wasn’t.

“No, dearest. I’m completely serious!” He laughed, inviting himself in. He sat in your arm chair and kicked off his shoes, getting mud on the burgundy rug. He put his feet up at the table, a shit-eating grin plastered on his ugly face.

“And once we’re married we’ll leave this tiny town, have a family. Children on the floor playing with the dogs, while you massage my feet and my back like a good little partner does. And we’ll have 7.”

“Dogs?” You asked, he laughed. “No! Children.” You shuddered at the thought of having children with Mahito.

He got up, walking towards you, and you started walking back until you hit the door. He put his arms up by your head, caging you. “I’m honoured, I really am. But I just don’t deserve you,” putting you hand on the door, you spun the handle and ducked down as he tumbled down the stairs.

Throwing his boots out you close and lock the door before scurrying out the back. You breathed heavily, and turned you head around the wall to see if he was still there. Upon further inspection it seemed like the entire town was there, at least those who carried enough to show up.

“Ugh! Imagine me, being his partner!” You huffed, the images in your head were enough to make your skin feel icky.

You walked away, close to where the forest began. Sitting down to walk the sunset, it was peaceful like this. Being alone, the warm air, having a quiet moment to yourself; it didn’t happen very often in the place you live.

As it seems luck isn’t on your side today, another disturbance appears. Although, this time, it’s isn’t an annoying or cocky bastard, it’s your fathers horse?

“Wait, what are you doing here?” Standing instantly, you ran over to calm it down. “If you’re here, where’s my father?” You questioned in worry, although it was obvious you wouldn’t get an answer.

Jumping onto your fathers horse, you leave. “Please, take me to my father!”

A/N: You know how in the beginning of the movie, all the people in the town are saying Bonjour? Imagine if it was Japanese so everyone was looking out their window shouting greetings in Japanese 😭

do you have any horror manga recommendations? I've been reading them a lot lately

ooh that is a very very good question!! and honestly if you've been following me for a while you've probably seen my catalogue of horror manga lmao. as much as manga is my preferred medium compared to anime and ykno i have a casual fondness for horror, it actually takes me a while to work through new manga DX DX i do have a couple of stuff i can probably suggest, though.

(since you're actively seeking horror, i'm gonna take a guess and assume you're not really in need of any major trigger warnings, since a lot of these recs include gore/violence/sexuality/abuse/general skeeziness, or at least can anticipate that you're gonna run into unsavory stuff, but you can follow up and let me know if there is actually something i should take note of.)

One thing I find with horror manga (and horror in general, but manga especially) is a common big genre drift with things action or comedy or adventure or something. A lot of the well-known names on rec lists have horror elements rather than being primarily horror, or the horror influence ends up downplayed as the story goes on. but still excellent. If I have recs in the realm of "horror-lite/influenced", I'd say:

Kemono Jihen by Sho Aimoto, kid joins a detective agency in Tokyo meant to resolve supernatural incidents between "kemono" and humans.

Dandadan by Yukinobu Tatsu, a girl who believes in spirits & ghosts and a boy who believes in aliens become friends! And a lot of things happen because the creator assisted for Fujimoto of Chainsaw Man fame, so it has a lot of the same off-the-wall, irreverent humour. While it's not as tight or classy as CSM, it's still a fuckin fun romp with nice horror moments.

Both of those I actually need to catch up with, haha. I'll actually recommend Can You Just Die, My Darling? as well, although I'm not sure if you're the anon who recced it to me first. Much stronger on the horror & violence elements, but it's another one I still have to catch up on.

I'm trying to avoid the obvious recommendations that you can get off any list, like Junji Ito or idk. Tokyo Ghoul, Dorohedoro or something like that. But special shout out to Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni. I'm most familiar with the 2006/07 anime series rather than the games (besides a couple of let's plays) and the manga, but I watched it with my sisters when I was young, LONG before I considered myself a horror fan, and I still consider those question arcs to have some of the best horror sequences ever experienced blind. Hugely influential.

In a similar vein to trying to avoid obvious recs, I know that Shuzo Oshime has gotten more popular as of late, but I've been working through Blood on the Tracks, which is about really insane mommy issues, so if you're cool with that!! You can also check out his other works that I haven't gotten to, but yeah I think he's

For probably my biggest recommendations though - the first one is a short-ish read, I think it was only one volume? The other two were excellent recommendations from my friends!

Helter Skelter by Kyoko Okazaki is about how fucked up the modelling & beauty industry is. There's also a movie adaptation that I haven't watched it.

Hikaru Ga Shinda Natsu (The Summer Hikaru Died) by Mokumokuren, a relatively new BL ongoing series about two friends who live in a rural village - except one of the friends had disappeared months ago in the mountains.

And my actual personal favourite recommendation, Kurosagi: Corpse Delivery Service. It's about a team of students at a Buddhist college who start a company to deliver corpses. They also solve murders along the way! This is a really great series and pretty easy to get into, I think - there's some ongoing plot, but a lot of the arcs are more episodic in nature. A lot of fun discussion on Japanese culture and views on death, it's funny, the gore and horror art are just great, it's just a cool unique series. The only thing is that while I believe it's completed, it's not fully translated in English - I think translations only go up to chapter ~89? So while there's story threads that are unanswered, the translations don't end on a cliffhanger at least.

I do have a "To Read" list compiled after going through some other rec lists / Youtube videos about horror manga. I can't speak to the quality of these yet, but they must have been intriguing enough for me to write them down. Here's a selection of them, not including general creators I wanted to check out:

-Innocent Rouge(its gay,its brutal and i fell deeply in love with the authors oc who has sex with historical figures)

-Oyasumi Punpun(its as heartwrenching as you heard)

5. Anything you haven’t drawn yet but want to?

OOH hmm, quite a few things! First off, proper full CrowMoth art LOL 😭 Zatanna/Etrigan and Zatanna/Jason Blood.

There's a lot of DC characters who I need to draw in general who I WANT to draw. Like my takes on the other Amethyst characters or the Monster Society of Evil!! The rest of the Marvel Family and some proper Captain Marvel/Shazam art!

There's still a lot of Transformers Animated art ideas I have on the back burner. Earlier this year I REALLY wanted to draw some Ratchcee properly but never truly got to it. God and I want to draw Yoketron meeting Bulkhead and the Dinobots so bad, that was always a big one.

I know I've drawn Higurashi before here and there but... I really do want to draw more Higurashi art in general. There's a certain scene from the 6th arc that really stuck in my head and I want to illustrate.

And then there's my long list of merch ideas I still need to draw. 😭

And my friends OCs... I have to much gift art I want to draw. OTL

17. What inspires you?

Man, SO many things. Any piece of media I read or watch or play, I'll probably get SOMETHING out of it. There's new ideas to get from everything! Nature too, I feel like I turn to it a lot when gathering refs and inspo.

Of course there's ones I always go back to. Paper Mario and Higurashi are big ones for me as far as writing inspo goes, when it's about more technical story things like structure and such.

And I have to shout out Metroid specifically for creature design, even as a little kid I was drawing Metroid monsters absolutely ENAMORED with them, and for me it's my go-to inspo for alien and creature design.

But most of all, what inspires me to create is just... sharing the things that make me happy with other people! I struggle a lot to communicate with others... and art is a big part of how I try to and how I interact with the world. The connections make me very happy, and also just being able to realize my ideas for me.

And of course, my lovely friends who support me. 🥺💖
