I know everyone's freaking out about the book 7 update (I am too) but I've been brainrotting about Yuu and Sebek duo shenanigans post Malleyuu marriage, put them in a random quotes generator and then doodled them really badly. Just!!! I really think there's so much potential for a really fun dynamic between these two in the instance of Malleyuu happening. Sebek's really loyal so once he gets over all those issues he has with humans imagine how protective he'd be over his human besties!! And one who's his beloved boss's spouse at that!! I imagine Knight!Sebek to be Consort!Yuu's most trusted confidant that they have a lot of banter with.

Is that halal?

So, I have to preface this by saying that, not all Arabs are Muslims, and not all Muslims are Arabs. In fact, the country that has the highest Muslim population is Indonesia, which is situated in Southeast Asia. It is also stated that, in Book 4, Grim was given a steamed pork bun to eat, and pork is haram (not allowed) in Islam, thus implying that although Scarabia dorm does have a lot of Middle Eastern elements, students that reside there may not necessarily be Muslims. All that said, lets jump in:

It was tough being the only girl in the all-boys school, but being the only hijabi? Man, Yusra couldn’t catch a break

For one thing, she had to run around doing all sorts of errands for Crowley and show up to class early, while staying on top of her salat (prayers)

Why was that a problem? Let's just say, in a school where all the toilets were for men, having to run all the way back to Ramshackle to take Wudhu for prayers then rush back in time for afternoon classes wasn't exactly easy, especially for someone of her atheletic (or lack thereof) abilities

There was also the problem of her hijab, the most glaring one being, she only had one

ONE hijab, which coincidently had been her ancient, frayed crinkle hijab

It had taken a good two hours, and a whole lot of pleading, for Crowley to give her extra allowance to buy another ONE more

And finally, there was the halal issue

She had yet to find a single halal-certified meat product in that cafeteria, and if she had to make do with eggs and tuna cans for the remainder of her stay, she was going to LOSE it

"Why not just ask someone in Scarabia? I heard most people who come from the Scalding Sands are Muslim", Deuce asked

"Yeah sure Deucey, she should definitely do that. 'Hey there, random stranger I don't know, would you please help me get some halal meat?' ", Ace quickly retorted, and Yusra swore she could feel her migraine grow stronger

That or maybe the heat radiating of the many people in the cafeteria

She could hear the start of an argument coming from Deuce's indignant response, and she couldn't handle another headache

"It's fine Deuce. It's a good idea, but Ace is right, it'll be weird if I just go up to someone and ask them for meat of all things. I think I'll just go get some fresh air instead", Yusra said, as she pushed aside her disappointment of a salad, which Grim quickly pounced on

"More for me then! Nyahaha!", Grim chuckled victoriously, before realising that she had been eating pure vegetables

"Never mind", he grumbled and sat back down with his chicken sandwich

Soon Yusra found herself in the botanical gardens, hoping to bump into a certain carnivore who she could irritate into sharing a space in the shade

Walking around for a while, she spotted someone opening their lunchbox and was about to promptly ignore him-

*"Allahumma baarik lanaa fima razaqtana wa-qina adhaban-nar. Bismillah", was that...

"Thanks for the food Jamil! ", the man with the white turban said before digging into what looked like...

"Um...", she cleared her throat and a few heads heads instantly swiveled in her direction, but she was too hungry to be embarrassed

"Sorry to interrupt, but, is that halal"

In contrast, when Zoe Ansari received a giant hourglass and was told she would train to slay nightmares, her only question was when do we start? Zoe quickly falls in love with the warped Escher-world of the Thirteenth Hour. She knows no fear. She knows no danger. She knows, if you ask Zack, far less than she thinks she does, and is likely to get herself and everyone in a ten-mile radius dead - which makes it a crying shame that he's her training partner.

Zack grudgingly joins the Sandmen in the hopes that they can save his grandma, who is in hospital after having her mind stolen by a dream. But shadowed secrets lurk in the heart of their new school. When Zack and Zoe discover a dangerous truth about the Sleeping Sickness, they will be forced to question their loyalty to the school and each other, and what it truly means to be brave.

❝ Most adults see teenagers as confused kids who don't understand much, while they're the pillars of knowledge and experience and know exactly what is right at all times. I think the truth is that everyone in the entire world is confused and nobody understands much of anything at all. ❞ 🦇 Alice Oseman's I Was Born for This is an exploration of friendship, self-identity, and the effects of fame. "Angel" Rahimi lives and breathes one thing: The Ark, a boy band of growing, world-renowned fame. Joining The Ark's fandom has given Angel her best friend, Juliet, a community, and a place in the world. Too bad her Muslim family can't understand why The Ark takes up so much space in Angel's boundless heart. The band's frontman, Jimmy Kaga-Ricci, knows The Ark owes their fans everything, but sometimes...they're a bit much. It doesn't help that their more intense fans are shipping Jimmy and his bandmate, Rowan, or that their constant presence is triggering his anxiety. When Angel visits Juliet in London to meet the band for the first time, reality comes crashing down on all of them. Sometimes, fame isn't all it seems.

💜 It's no surprise that Alice Oseman has artistically explored coming-of-age themes through the universal concept of connecting through music. The Ark and resulting fandom give Angel a family and community; a sense of belonging she lacked in high school. At the same time, her position in the fandom has erased her individualism and identity (her real name is Fereshteh, which translates to Angel). As much as she loves the band, she's not IN love with them though. The Boys--Jimmy, Rowan, and Lister--have lost parts of themselves as well. Fans see the versions of them they want to see, and The Boys, knowing they owe their fans everything, smile and play their parts. They don't see Jimmy's debilitating anxiety, the relationship Rowan is trying to hide from the press, or Lister's depression, alcoholism, or bruised bisexual heart.

🦇 This is a deeply character-driven story; a story that's focused on growing up through friendships and found family, NOT romantic entanglements. As always, Oseman excels at creating diverse, nuanced characters, including: 🎵 Jimmy: trans, biracial Indian and Italian, gay, with severe anxiety 🎵 Angel: Iranian, hijabi, Muslim, queer and questioning 🎵 Rowan: biracial, Nigerian, and very protective of Jimmy 🎵 Lister: bisexual struggling with alcoholism and depression

🦇 One of the most important messages in this story is to love yourself first. The Boys get lost in their fame, which leads them to neglect who they are and what they need, while Angel loses herself (and potentially, her future) in the fandom. As a coming-of-age story, it's also a reminder that it's okay NOT to be okay; that recognizing as much doesn't make you weak, but human. However, I do think the final act is a little messy. Since the story is character-driven, the first half drags, while the second half feels like a tangle of ideas and motivations. I think the story would have been stronger if it focused on the three boys; if they gained Angel's perspective through a fan letter instead. There's so much to Rowan and Lister's story we haven't seen yet.

can we get some facts about amalia and the mc/rowan’s childhood (and up until high school adventures if you will) and the little things they would do together??

MC and Amalia met in elementary school. The way they met is up to you!

At school, if Amalia and MC were on opposite teams during dodgeball, Amalia would always purposefully tag MC. More than once, were the last two standing and the rest of the team members chanted them on in an epic showdown.

They get crazy competitive during Mario Kart and end up spending the vast majorty of the time trying to get into each other's way instead of actually racing. Annie loved to watch their Mario Kart battles.

Amalia got along with Rowan's entire family, especially Annie. Sometimes she would come over and Annie would hog all of her attention.

Amalia’s parents consider MC a second child. After all, MC did live with them for two years after their family died. MC still spends every major holiday with the de Leòn family.

MC was the first person Amalia came out to and vice-versa, if MC’s LGBTQ+

For hijabi MC, Amalia's their official taste tester if they're in doubt whether the food is halal.

MC went to all of Amalia’s martial arts contests. When Amalia lost, a genuine MC would take her out to dinner and treat her to a great night. A sarcastic MC would joke about slashing the ref’s tires and prank call the person who won. An aggressive MC would give Amalia honest feedback on her performance and try to help Amalia improve so she could win the next time.
