Abbreviated xenoblade session tonight! And it might be for the best, considering how unhinged my roommate is being right out the gate.

We load up the game (Nia and Dromarch in the lead) and the first thing she says to me is "I feel like Dickson can't be my 'hear me out' guy, because he's conventionally attractive." Great start.

20 Questions More

This is a deeper and more detailed version of the 20 questions for AO3 fanfic writers.

I yanked the questions from someone in the supercorp fandom. I forget who. I never get tagged since I'm not really well known writer yet (I'm still a tumblr newbie!), so I'm doing this just for funsies and because I like answering questions.

I will be answering this for the supercorp and korrasami fandoms. My works are here (though I do one-shots on tumblr sometimes).

1) How do you keep getting ideas for your ship / fandom?

By existing, reading, listening, writing, watching things, staring at the sky and watching the clouds drift by. Seriously, my ADHD's superpower is generating ideas. So I have way too many of them, and I have a note in my Scrivener projects with all the ideas. If anyone needs more ideas, I'll spin out so many. lol

2) Which authors inspire you in your fandom, and why are they so freakishly good?

So for the Korrasami fandom, that would be @korrasamibottles for their fantastic oneshots, Progman for one of the best post-series fics I've ever read (seriously, the Asami Sato of RRU is awesome), Shigan for some amazing korrasami oneshots, FuzziFox for an adorable and action-y AU where Asami goes south with Korra, lovedeathcats for the best Indiana Jones AU ever, RainbowRosie for a great AU where bending has vanished, paxbanana's Place in the World is an interesting AU take on Korrasami. @asamiontop's Modern world AU is a must read (she also has some great supercorp one-shots). For supercorp? @jazzfordshire has exquisitely written fics, everything @fazedlight writes is gold, @snowydragonscave's oneshots are adorable, @mycatismyeditor has some great AU's that really dig into the characters, @ekingston has some of the best written AU's I've ever read, @karalovesallthegirls has the most hilarious fics ever (Mime fic), robie's AUs are some of the best slow burn I've read, TheUnforgivingMinute wrote a fantastic spookysupercorp, @coffeeshib floored me with their gorgeous prose, @rustingcat not only does amazing art but the fics are such a great slow burn, @chaotic-super's back to Krypton was absolutely goldmine of fun and digging into the lore of Krypton. I could go on. Let's just say I LOVE Y'all's fics. The above are the people who had the most impact on me personally. Where I learned the art of fanfic writing. Since I'm a science fiction writer, I tend toward creative writing techniques that don't always jive well in the fandom realm, so learning from others helps me refine my writing to use the least amount of words for the biggest impact possible. It's also great practice for my original fiction honestly.

3) Aside from the characters of your main ship, who are the characters you love to write?

I really love writing Sam Arias. Nia is also super fun to write, and writing Brainy and Lena arguing about science is always fun too. Alex is a littler harder for me to write (her snark is hard for me to capture), but she's a blast once I get in the right headspace for it. For Korrasami, I really love writing Jinora and Bolin. Asami considers both of them basically siblings at this point, and Korra does too actually. heh.

4) Are there pairings or tropes you know for sure you'd never write about? Which ones?

I will NEVER EVER writing Makorra - that is a clusterfuck I will never touch. Hell, it's why I didn't rewrite book 1 of TLOK for my Shared Moments series because I really didn't want to touch it at all. lol I just skipped to the six months after and started there. I'll NEVER write Lames or any relationship that features Mon-el. Nope. Not touching it. I prefer to write sapphic pairings for the main protagonists. Sure, side characters can have het pairings (like Brainy and Nia), but I won't write a fic with them as the focus. Other folks can do that.

5) What is your writing process and why is it cursed?

Step 1: Wake up, wash up, and get tea. Step 2. Cuddle the cat to prepare myself. Step 3: Put on my compression gloves and stretch my arms. Step 4: Put on the correct playlist (absolutely essential step otherwise it'll throw off the entire scene and then I have to start over.) Step 5: Try to avoid Tumblr. (Doesn't always work, this place is cursed I swear. lol) Step 6. Open Scrivener project (who am I kidding, these primary projects are always open on m computer). Write while my brain is cooperating. (30 to 40 minutes before I got to rest for 45 minutes then I can start writing again. Chronic illness sucks like that.) Step 7: realize I need to research something and lose two hours to that. Step 8: AO3 emailed me! Who commented this time! Oh noes, now I've fallen down the looking at the Internets.

The other thing I do is carry my journal everywhere to document everything and end up with some weird random poetry, drawings, and dialogue from people I overhear. Oh, and on bad brain days, I'll draw cursed images.

I also use Scrivener and go all haywire on all its features to a ridiculous extent. Like, I try to stuff ALL my outlines, research, scenes, into that Scrivener so it's all in one place, that way I don't forget anything. It makes for large projects. ha.

6) What is your favorite part of your writing process?

Incorporating my research into the story in subtle ways to fill out the world and immerse the reader more fully. It's fun to put some of this research in the end-notes for my fics on AO3. (The power AO3 gave us writers with those end-notes!!)

7) What’s the weirdest thing you’ve had to research for a fic?

Maturation of bird species and the DNA overlap with human beings to see if I can craft an alien species that is at least 90% DNA similar to humans but is more birdlike.

I looked up the absorption of chemicals through skin. (This is why I use duckduck go for anonymity for this sort of stuff. LOL)

8) Is there a particular writing rule you struggle with (grammar, spelling, tense, reality in general)?

Reality in general - ha. Seriously though, the chronic illness makes it really hard to concentrate and have energy for writing or really anything. The second thing I struggle with is I have an annoying habit of adapting my tenses to what I'd last read. So if the story I read was past-tense, I'll jump into my writing using past tense (which most of my stories is that tense, but there's two that aren't so that's when it gets annoying).

9) What was your hardest scene to write so far and why?

The hardest scene was the end of Book 3 for Shared Moments for the Korrasami series. Both Asami and Korra (due to the bond they forged by accident at Harmonic Convergence) are captured by Zaheer, so that was a brutally painful set of scenes. Full of pain, fighting, poisoning, and a struggle to survive. I wept through it honestly. Whew. Yikes. For Supercorp, the hardest scene was when Nia assists Lena with her dreams and memories of her birth mother. Those were so sad and I totally teared up writing them. It was also hard to sort out the best way to reveal details without giving too much away either. Since Nia's powers are a little all over the place too.

10) Have your characters ever done something you didn’t expect, changing your plot completely?

All the time! For the TLOK: Shared Moments series, Asami keeps surprising me, so I often have to sit down and remap her timeline, and it always enriches the entire series. For Supercorp, Nia keeps doing things that surprise me. She's like this chaotic good agent that adds in humor and twists that enrich the tale in subtle ways I think. There's many other surprising moments the characters do. That's half the fun! Seeing where the characters end up and if I need to adjust my plans. :D

11) If you could converse with any of the characters, who would it be and why?

That's a tie between Asami Sato and Lena Luthor honestly. But then I sort of think of them as basically the same person (Lena may be more neutral in temperament while Asami is chaotic good. Also, Asami isn't afraid to fly planes and crash them for Korra. Lena would prefer no flying. lol). I just wanna talk science with them. Oh and ask them about how in-love they are with Korra and Kara respectively. (Lena will try to deny it, but Asami will gush and admit it because she's a little more in touch with her feelings). I just love these two so much. :D

12) What are some of the tropes or themes that you find yourself returning to in your writing?

Healing journeys. I really enjoy writing healing from trauma, because I feel like it's so relevant for our times, and the characters never really get that in their series (well, Supergirl characters don't, and they really need it!).

The theme of chosen family is another theme I come to again and again. Partly due to how my life is -- my bio family is not healthy for me (outright abusive), so my chosen family is my real family. So I like to dig into those dynamics a lot.

I also tend to write the survivor narrative a lot. It's a more interesting narrative structure, but it's also less used so that can startle readers. Sometimes in good ways? A good example of a survivor narrative structure is TLOK actually.

Another good example of the survivor narrative is Sam Arias' journey in Season 3 of Supergirl. Maybe I'll write an essay someday on it.

13) What's your most important resource as a writer?

There's isn't any one most important resource. I'd say fellow writers and artists is a great resource, lore books is another, random research books (yes, I have a guide to weapons for writers, guide for poisons for writers, guide to x or y for writers, because I'm a nerd like that), the Internet, and lots of listening to others.

14) Can you share some of your strategies for editing and revising your work?

For editing/revising, I start with SPAG: spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Once I do a few run-throughs of that, then I look at the dialogue -- Is the dialogue true to the character's personality and quirks? Can I make the dialogue more succinct?

After that, I look at descriptions: Is the description immersive? Do I utilize the five senses in a concise way? Can I pare down the description while still keeping the immersive quality? Is there any description that doesn't add to the scene or character's growth and can that be moved to a different scene or saved for later?

Finally, I do a fresh read-through and check how it impacts my emotions. Do I laugh at the funny parts? Do I tear up at the sad/angst parts? Does it feel too dry or not emotive enough? What words could be used instead to better invoke emotions?

15) Which is worse: making the summary, picking the tags, or the anxiety when you post your fic?

Ugh, summaries are the worst. Sometimes it's easier to just pick an excerpt of a scene and slap that as the summary. Tags are even worse. I never know what to use for tags, especially since people seem to be kind of random with AO3 tags. I mean, I feel like some writers just will write a statement as a tag and it's amusing but also confusing.

16) How do you define success for your fanfic - hits? Kudos? Comments? Bookmarks? Or just if you like it?

I don't really measure success.

If I get comments from folks that say they're enjoying it? That's a source of joy for me but it's not about success. Because I'm writing mostly for my enjoyment, but to hear that others enjoy it too? Damn, that's like the best news ever. It really helps me feel better about myself and my writing. Like I'm valued and not forgotten. That I actually have an impact. So yeah, go leave comments if you like stuff, please. Us writers love it.

17) Do you have a playlist for your favorite character / ship?

YES. I Always make a playlist for each project I do. I craft it based on their personality, their character arcs, the mood of the piece, and I focus on a variety of genres. I think about the lyrics of songs and try to match it all together. I might spend way more time on playlists than I need, but since I have them playing as I write, I need them to fit the mood and atmosphere to increase inspiration.

18) If fan art was going to be made from your work, which fic would you pick and which fan artist would you like to create it?

Um. Huh. This is a hard question. I try to draw my own, but I can't do color (y'all that do color, are freaking WIZARDS). I think Confession fic and the scene where Lena resurrects Kara, and if and when I have money again, I'd ask @rustingcat if commissions are open for them.

For Korrasami, I'd choose Book 3 or 3.5 but I'm not sure on the artist.

19) How many WIPs do you currently have?

UM. If I count just fanfics, probably fifteen. I'm actively working on six. (Three in each fandom. Two are usually shorter, and one is the longer fic) If we include original fiction and fanfiction? Uhhhhh. Hahahah, that's like twenty-five or so. I'm only working on one original fiction piece set on my SF world of Elivera.

20) What's your advice to new fanfic writers?

Pace yourself and take some time to edit and revise before posting. Also, take some time to review the transcripts and how the characters talk. That can give some fun insight into the characters and ways to expand on them in interesting ways.

Ask questions a lot! There's so many nice folks in the fandom, and folks are so kind about answering questions. I know because I still ask questions and talk to folks about this, and more seasoned writers have been so lovely.

Write what you want. Don't write for your readers (unless someone requests and pays you for a fic, then I guess write for them. lol) but otherwise, write what you want. This is supposed to be fun. If you're getting stressed out, take a break otherwise you will get burned out. To avoid burn out, take time to rest. Read a bit, do fun hobbies, do some practice writing, and then dive back into your fic.

Yes, it's important to try to finish things, but don't feel pressured. Remember, having fun is crucial! It's okay to take your time. Readers will stick with you if they like your tale.

There really has been no dom beomgyu smuts lately as a switch myself I’m a little sad haha but I also find it really funny but I don’t think there’s a lot of sub beomgyu smuts just because people think beomgyu is submissive because honestly I just think the whole of txt are switches and I think dynamics also really depend on what kind of partner you have as well so I wouldn’t say someone is dominant or someone is submissive. I think reading femdom smuts is just a lot more fun to read and probably to write because I feel like normal ones can get quite repetitive and it feels more exhilarating and powerful even if you aren’t actually a dom irl it’s nice to see women being more dominant with men because in real a lot of guys have quite a fragile masculinity with it. Also txt tumblr is quite small compared to other kpop writing communities I’ve seen, there isn’t actually that many consistent blogs on here and so actual smuts on any txt members have actually been quite sparse. I’d say sub beomgyu became a thing because of the blueprint blogs that kickstarted it such as wildernessuntothemselves I had never really seen submissive beomgyu until they came around and other blogs such as you and fairyofshampgyu inspired others to write sub beomgyu because those blogs were the only really ones consistent and kickstarting this. Haha I don’t know why this is so long but hopefully it is somewhat coherent!

Definitely agree with the femdom writing being fun-- like, you don't need to be a dom in real life to enjoy writing it and that is the case for me 😅 This is a little bit of a contradiction to your earlier statement but I genuinely do not believe I have one percentage of dominant energy, completely submissive over the years with my relationships (but I'm starting to doubt it just a little bit after getting into femdom content so....idk 😂). Yes, yes about the women being more powerful kind of serving as an exhilarating experience even when just writing it-- is it a little embarrassing to admit that most of my smut are incredibly self indulgent? Writing it as a fantasy of putting someone "in their place", definitely like a reliever after having to put up with it practically every day of my life.

Did a quick comparison to other 4th gen boy groups and it's a little odd how significant the difference is at times? 😂 Yet the smut tag has more people posting under (maybe that changed over the past few months and fluff is what people are leaning more towards?) even though there's definitely a sparse number of consistent blogs (which would naturally equate to less variety in content).

Ha! I was on here earlier than I started posting like most people are on tumblr, and I'd have to say that your observation skills are so good because lol yes, @wildernessuntothemselves (heh sorry for tagging you mort but i just might want you to see this 😂) was definitely a blog I first got introduced to with sub!beomgyu like, just hardcore, straight up whiny boy and a powerful woman (lover = loser fic...ah, very delicious).

There were definitely some fics here and there, but kick starting it, I'd want to give that credit to her! After a bit, @fairyofshampgyu came out with their fuck you series, and I'd say both are sort of the blueprint of the recent rising in seeing beomgyu as a very strong sub. Before this, you'd see one of those MTL posts and almost always Beomgyu is categorized as a hardcore dom, and now I almost get shocked seeing Beomgyu being considered more of a sub than Hueningkai and Soobin (who were often seen as softer doms or just sub men in general).

I wasn't even meaning to turn this blog into a sort of sub!beomgyu cult of fics, like...at all so I find it funny that I'm jumbled together with a more experienced writer like Nia 😂 But yeah, some really good points. It's just funny how a few months ago I was desperately looking for anything sub!beomgyu related (to the point i created this blog in hopes of receiving sub beomgyu requests), just a tinge because everything under the smut tag was hardcore dom, I wouldn't have imagined the tables would turn so quickly especially considering male subs aren't particularly that popular comparative to their counterparts.

I do feel for people who are sub leaning, content is sparse with txt in general-- and for people to get even simply blocked for requesting a dominant beomgyu? A... little insane 😅? I even remember this sort of thing being brought up around three months ago, someone talking about how they see Beomgyu as a complete dom and do not understand that appeal of the recent surge of sub Beomgyu-- perception is different, and I do wish for you and others to get more dominant Beomgyu fics, everyone deserves a little treat 😭

Immortal Desires | Luca, Cas, Gabriel: These 3 are super comfortable in a closed poly triad; seeing how attracted their partner is to their other partner is a huge source of joy for them.

Gabriel doesn't frequently experience attraction to people (who aren't Cas or Luca) beyond "oh, huh, yeah I guess objectively that person is aesthetically pleasing, now that you point it out. Cas and Luca will be like "damn, that person is hot" when they are out and about and see someone they find attractive, and the other will just shrug and agree lol

BOLAS | Dorian and the crew: In my Blades fics, there's a poly dynamic amongst the gang; its not everyone paired with everyone, but there are lots of interconnected relationships (like... Dorian x Nia; Dorian x Aerin; Dorian x Mal (non-romantic); Mal x Tyril, etc etc. I'm still figuring things out with them.)

The only one who gets super jealous is Aerin (which stems from a deeeep insecurity), but its early days -- he'll grow!

WHAT IS YOUR OTP FOR YOUR CHARACTER(S)? I actually don't have a set OTP for Corvus at least not canonically. (I did at one point but tbh it's mostly something that stays outside of tumblr and written on discord with someone only because I don't like anyone feeling like that's why I'm writing with their character.)

HOW LARGE DOES THE AGE GAP HAVE TO BE TO MAKE IT UNCOMFORTABLE? With Corvus ranging from 20-26 in all of their verses, I'd say even 18 is pushing it if they're 26 in the verse it's happening in, but I'm not unwilling as long as the muse is 18+. However, ages older than them don't bother me in the slightest it's just rare they attract to someone much older than them. If it happens it happens.

HOW FAR DO STEAMY MOMENTS HAVE TO GO BEFORE THEY ARE CONSIDERED NSFW? Honestly, I tend to consider even heavy petting nsfw to be tagged just for the sake of others but I believe stuff considered nsfw doesn't have to be sexual. It can be anything more gory or violent in general. But anything going beyond that in sexual terms I've never written with anyone other than with my best friend through discord so I can't exactly definitively say what I consider that to be. So just. Baseline I guess LMAO.

ARE YOU SELECTIVE WHEN SHIPPING? That depends! I'm not exactly super selective when it comes to it as long as our characters possibly have some type of chemistry to work with. Like I don't mind shipping characters who seem to hate each other because that's how every good enemies to lovers or enemies to friends plot starts, but if they obviously don't have even a speck of attraction to or willingness to get along with each other that's obviously where it would fall through. I'm usually fairly easy going about it though, it just takes some talking about it because of how Corvus can be in terms of trusting others depending on the verse.

WHO ARE OTHER CHARACTERS YOU SHIP YOUR CHARACTER WITH? @poeticphoenix Genesis and @poisonpicked Rio comes to mind automatically because those are just. Chef kiss. And of course I will always feel lovingly obligated to mention @prismpowa Corvus' best friend @pluviacuratio a friend that Corvus trusts. And tbh so far Corvus is happy to have Nia as their 3 AM gaming buddy in their villain verse @sleepdeprxved.

DOES ONE HAVE TO ASK TO SHIP WITH YOU? Asking is usually appreciated, but if your muse is simply acting how your muse does and it happens naturally I'm always good with that too. Of course I might eventually I'm gonna crawl over to you to discuss it if my anxiety allows me, but 9 times out of 10 if you ship the thing I probably ship the thing. If you want to send the meme then send the meme etc. I tend to just go with the flow on it so if you burst aggressively into my DMs I'm likely to just "yes".

ARE YOU SHIP OBSESSED OR SHIP MORE-OR-LESS? Ship more-or-less. I say that confidently because even if I am easy going about making connections for Corvus, I'm here simply to have fun and write as well as to enjoy writing them with others. Even if nothing comes out of an interaction with someone, it was still an important in terms of developing the character and I still had fun. That's what matters at the end of the day. Our muses don't have to form a bond for us to enjoy writing together, and on that note, they especially don't have to form a positive one. Enemies are always welcome for them to be a little shit to.

ARE YOU MULTISHIP? Yes! I don't really have any desire to limit them there. There isn't really much I have to say about that either besides the only time I wouldn't multiship is if a verse called for it and it felt right.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SHIP IN YOUR CURRENT FANDOM? I don't really have any favorite ships in Corvus' main verse fandom and tbh I barely have any within any of the fandoms for their other verses. I've never been someone who was big on shipping canon characters all that much. It's not that I dislike it, but I've never really been struck with the interest to do so. I usually get so focused on the plot that my brain doesn't exactly think about pairing the characters. The most I've been hit with shipping characters is... well, here.

Hi!! Read your recent fic, it’s so good! But about the AN, may I ask why you didn’t like the ending of the game, if it’s not too much?

Hi! I'm glad you liked my fic. And sure, I can give you an answer--I'll do my best to not just start ranting angrily because honestly thinking about it makes me want to start crying again.

I'll post it under a cut because Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is still so new--if you haven't beaten the game, don't click on it, because here there be spoilers.

So the thing is. Xenoblade 3?

This is basically how I felt about the game. The setting, the style, the cast...it all felt like it was made for me. It was, genuinely, a perfect 100 for me until the last five minutes.

Let me try to be concise as I explain this.

The main issues I take with the ending can basically be summed up as:

It comes out of nowhere.

It betrays the themes of the game.

As the intended finale of the Xenoblade Chronicles trilogy it falls immensely short because of a mix of all these other points.

Considering the endings the XBC1 and XBC2 casts got, this one really feels like a slap in the face.

It, and I cannot express this enough, makes everything you do pointless. None of it mattered, it was all for nothing.

Now, let me explain these points in more depth:

It comes out of nowhere.

Maybe some gigachads with universe brains could sense where this was headed, but I could not. I think this was part of the issue, honestly--it felt to me sort of as if they wanted it to be a twist emotional gutpunch, and thus never telegraphed it to the player, leading to the player being caught off guard entirely.

What I thought would happen is that we would simply reclaim Origin and continue on in Aionios, rebuilding and experiencing life not on a timer. It seemed to me that the issue was that Z had taken control of Origin and frozen Aionios in stasis, not that the worlds needed to split again. It honestly came out of left field and took me out of what should have been an emotional moment, a triumphant moment, as I scrambled to understand what the hell was going on.

It betrays the themes of the game.

This is one of the big ones for me. XBC3 claims itself to be a game about life, and yes, it is--but it's about grief and moving on, it's about the past and letting it go, it's about facing the future you chose and fighting for the freedom to choose in the first place.

And yet, in the end, there is no choice. Against their will, the people of Aionios are split apart, after finally uniting. And yet, in the end, it's not the future that is chosen, because everything resets back to fucking zero. But I'll get more into that in another point.

I can tell you that when I finish a game, I want to leave it satisfied, if not happy. And when I finish a series, I want to leave it the same way.

At the ending of Xenoblade 3, I was in disbelief and shock. I was sending messages to my friends on discord in complete rage. I was sobbing in my bed at midnight and crying myself to sleep not because of the cathartic release of emotion I like to experience from fiction, but because I felt like the game had just stabbed me in the back. There was no closure, and there was definitely no happiness. I was excited, to go into the "postgame" and pick up Nia and Melia, to finish my sidequests and hero ascensions. To fill out the rest of my maps and fight the remaining unique monsters. To try my hand at the superbosses.

I was excited for these things, prior to beating the final boss and seeing the final cutscene. After that, I just felt hollow. I haven't picked up the game since and I know I won't for a while because I'll get angry and upset again, because What's The Point, Really? I'll elaborate on this more in my last point. But basically, for a minute there, when I beat the game, I wished I could rewind time and never finish it. I wished I could wipe my memory of the ending and stay in side content limbo forever. No ending that makes me feel like that is a good one.

Shulk and his friends get to live amongst a new, unified world and work together towards the future. It ends open ended, but happily.

Noah, Mio, Eunie, Taion, Lanz, and Sena do not get a happy ending. The people of Aionios do not get a happy ending. They are no longer frozen in a cycle, but they are torn apart, reset to zero, and don't even get to keep their memories. You can say it ended open ended if you want, but I can't see anything about this that is happy for them.

It, and I cannot express this enough, makes everything you do pointless. None of it mattered, it was all for nothing.

This is the big one. The one that really, above all else, makes me so upset.

The sidequests of rebuilding colonies, of learning to farm. Of liberating these colonies and getting the people of Agnus and Keves to work together and be friends. None of it matters, because none of it stays. What's the point in going back and finishing these sidequests and having the characters interact with each other when I know there's no point, because it's all going to get erased?

This is what I mean, about it betraying its own themes. This was it. Aionios was the world where life could have walked together hand in hand, as soon as they took that life back from Moebius. Aionios was real and lived in and loved and they made you love it too, only to take it all away and wind everything back to the start.

For a game about walking into the future, it sure couldn't let go of the past.

So that's it, basically. That's why I hate the ending. It's why XBC3 is, a little, ruined for me. I still love the cast and world and everything about the plot before that final reveal of the ending. But I can't help but feel bitter about it now. And it might take me a while to ever want to play it again.

If you or anyone else liked the ending, that's fine. But I can't. Not ever.

Playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2 again before 3 comes out.

I'm only through chapter 3 again, but my god the writing is terrible. The voice acting is... okay I guess. I've heard worse. The plot is pretty paper thin at this point, and the only reason I can actually follow it is because I've played Torna. The most interesting character, Praetor Amalthus, has only just been introduced, and I'm looking forward to everything he's going to do and say. The worst part of this game is how uninteresting most of the main cast is. Pyra and Mythra are, frankly, very boring to me. I didn't remember Rex having any character development my first time through, but I guess the part with Vandham counts. Jin is almost interesting, but he only shines when you play Torna, and after that he's ones of my favorites. I can't remember if they mention anything at all about Lora other than just showing her sealed away on the ship, but her dynamic with Jin in Torna is infinitely better than the awkward, half hearted "romance" between Rex and Pyra. Nia is one of the only characters that shows actual growth, and she's already made the realization that she sank pretty low, so I'm looking forward to her realizing life is pretty okay. I also have a soft spot for Morag, but that's neither here nor there, I just like a lady that could intimidate me at will. Zeke has only been shown once so far in the current play through, and honestly, he's terrible. A complete waste of time until you get to Tantal. I don't really know where I'm going with this, but I want everyone to know that XC2 kinda sucks for most of the game, and Torna is really good, so I have no idea what to expect going in to 3, but my gut tells me it's going to kind of suck.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (2017) (NG+)

I first played this game back in early 2018, as I think the fourth Switch game i picked up. Naturally, with Xenoblade 3 being a game I'll likely get to soon, I wanted a refresh on this game's plot.

I opted for a NG+ run rather than a full replay mostly due to a combination of time and... I did remember enough of the gameplay to not want a full replay.

I'll keep this one more brief than my Xenoblade Definitive and Future Connected posts, and just give my brief opinions on the game rather than a more in depth explanation.

Gameplay

Bluntly, I think it's a noticeable downgrade from Xenoblade 1. The game adds several new battle systems that it doesn't quite explain that well, which I wouldn't mind as much on its own amongst other gameplay elements. The biggest one is the gacha for Blades, which mostly just sucks due to having story progression tied to it and most blades kinda just sucking, even the unique ones. Some Blades are available just through sidequests which, honestly, I wish they all were.

Battles also feel like crawling through molasses compared to 1's feeling so much more fluid as well, which is probably more of a nitpick but it feels far slower by comparison to me.

Story

This game made the utterly alien writing decision of splitting the game's overall plot between two writers on an odd and even number chapter split. The end result is the even number chapters noticeably having a much more comical tone compared to the odd number ones, and the game suffers for it. Especially so with chapters 2 and 4.

In fairness, chapters 6, 8 and the final chapter do feel more like they blend in, but 2 and 4 are a very rough initial impression with a heavy comical emphasis, of which for me just... doesn't land. These chapters are also where the game's slightly overblown sexualisation of Pyra/Mythra comes into play, like it's definitely there but I barely noticed it as much in the later chapters.

Chapter 4 is my single most disliked part of the game, nothing happens of relevance to the rest of the game's plot and getting through it just felt like a slog, I cared about nothing happening at all.

But that said, when the game does get going it does manage to make a few interesting points with its world, the game's themes mostly focusing on power and humanity. Though I do feel it kind of misses some discussion points on those notes.

Characters wise the game does have a few good ones, but on the whole I do think this game's cast is weaker than 1's, I'd say Morag is my overall favourite, and Pyra and Nia are otherwise standouts as well. Most characters do have a decent amount of likeability going for them, though I regrettably will be punting Rex for the sin of being British British.

Also not an inherent issue but the game's characters that are actually story important is limited to 2 of the antagonists, Pyra/Mythra and Zeke, with everyone else being here simply for worldbuilding or by necessity. Or you could be Morag, who joins in a filler arc and then has most of their arc resolved in a second filler arc later on. Not a dig at Morag, she ended up being one of my favourites, but man she just gets nothing.

Overall

I consider Xenoblade 2 something like a 7/10. It's still an alright experience but it stumbles in just enough areas to bring down the overall experience. Not terrible, by any means, but I'd way sooner play Xenoblade 1 again.

I do still need to play Torna, but I'm more interested in Xenoblade 3 currently, so that'll be the next one.

can i ask for some headcanons with ushijima and his s/o who is also oikawa little sister/brother (the age difference is not big btw, just two years or three)? i don't know why but i think it would be really funny if oikawa's sibling was in love with ushijima and the two of them got together with oikawa's disapproval. of course in the end he would see that ushijima really cares about his little sibling so he would accept it but it would be hilarious and he would be constantly in “protective big brother” mood XD

them wearing his jacket as long as possible before giving it back so oikawa doesn't notice...them visiting toshi at practice and being friendly with the team despite their brother :(broken_)heart:

but as oikawa's sibling, they've seen him coming home late from practice and heard him ranting about shiratorizawa multiple times

which is why he genuinely thinks they're joking when he first finds out (they probably like, accidentally posted them on a date on their public story rather than private or something) because "how could you date one of my well-known worst enemies?!"

the next time oikawa sees ushijima it's on sight.

"so you're dating my sibling. my sibling. why? what are you going to do with them? do you even remember how you met or when you started liking them? huh? so help me if you decide to hurt them i will end you,"

toshi is just standing there like. "why would i hurt the person i'm dating? i love them?"

the face on oikawa's face. the sheer distraught. gags a little

the same thing happens anytime ushijima happens to come over. any form of pda and oikawa is dramatically yelling/gagging, "not in my house you don't"

he's so annoying i'm crying he photobombs them, won't share his food, pulls his sibling away when he thinks they're too close, sticks his tongue out at them, will literally respond to his sibling's story of the both of them with an angry emoji, pulls the "you have to since you decided to date ushijima" as something over their head—the entire gig

objectively the funniest thing he did was when he made his own meme with a crossed out photo of ushijima that said "if my sibling don't got me, i know i got me. can i get an amen?" and sent it to them

"tooru please" "[amen!] yeah exactly thank you you get it"

iwaizumi is somewhere taking advil from the sheer headache hearing his friend talk has given him. "can you believe it? they're dating Ushijima. iwa i think they're out to kill me. i think i'm dying. he was in my house on the weekend. USHIJIMA? IN MY HOUSE?"

someone help him (iwaizumi)

tooru probably ends up accepting it when he had to go pick them up from a date

he was fully prepared to be loud while dragging his sibling along (again)

but then he gets there and ends up seeing them laughing and they just look so,, happy. both of them

he overhears his sibling ask "do you think he's ever gonna be okay with us? i mean, i know he's upset and all and it's the whole protective brother thing but i just— i still want him to support me and go back to how we were, y'know? he's my brother."

his heart hurts a little (lot)

he walks up with his hands in his pockets and only a slight pout/pointed stare at ushijima. they both know something's different when he's silent as he waits for his sibling to pack their things rather than hounding them

his sibling really knows when he asks "so, did you have fun?" like excuse me?? that's it??

seeing them knowingly grin and nod, all tooru can really do is sigh and smile a little. younger siblings, he guesses

eventually one day he gets home and he's tired and god iwa was so mean to him and he whines, "hey you can't tell me what they did at practice when you visited your boyfriend, can you?" knowing full-well they wouldn't say anything

"so you're picking that ugly guy over me? your best friend and big brother who loves and cares about you? who helped you ride a bike and picks you up and buys you food and—"

really his protectiveness has toned down but his jokes haven't. but they're different and that's how you knows he's fine.

less "stop hugging get away from each other you're going to make me sick" and more "take it to your room oh my god" (alternatively if that isn't super clear: less Stop Dating At All, more general annoying but accepting sibling)

he still doesn't like ushijima but his sibling's happiness is more important at the end of the day

the next time tooru catches ushijima alone he gets all serious, "you really like them, don't you?"

when ushijima (per usual) is direct and says, "yes, like i told you before. are you okay with it now?" oikawa feels like he's going to burst a nerve why can't you be more annoying about this

"yeah yeah yeah whatever. but i swear to god if they ever come home in tears because of you—" and he's back.

looks straight into his sibling's eyes and says "at least it isn't tobio. i would have disowned you, you know?" smh he's so annoying /j

As I promised a while ago, here are some thoughts I had from the last few chapters of xenoblade 2, presented in rough chronological order:

I liked Mikhail in Torna a lot, and I liked what they revealed for his backstory here too. Honestly I was even kind of cheering on his revenge in killing Indol even though the other half of me was like "wait no that's bad don't kill the whole Titan"

Amalthus is like. I get him, yeah, and he's a perfect philosophical foil to Rex, but he's not really interesting to me in any way except for how he managed to get and keep power for so long without anyone noticing, like "banality of evil" kind of stuff

I'm really glad for that conversation with Jin near the end because it reassured me that they did in fact have a reason to make Blades the way they are and it wasn't just a horribly thought out piece of worldbuilding. It seems to me like the point they're trying to make is that the Blade-Driver bond and the endlessly reincarnating nature of Blades isn't inherently a bad thing as long as the humans don't take advantage of the Blades' dependence on them, and Indol's religion has made everything a lot worse for Blades because of its teaching that they're inherently lesser and subservient to humans. I still vehemently disagree with that idea (that Blade dependence on humans is Fine Actually) due to the reliance on good choices by humans, but I at least respect that they're making a point

Once again the osmosis of xc2 lore from people who don't like it has failed me, because I thought that they made it so Zanza was just Klaus' "evil half" and really Klaus was good all along, guys! (gag). I like the actual reality much more, where it's more that the Architect is a version of Klaus who didn't get what he wanted and tried to fix the damage he caused while Zanza got exactly what he wanted and so didn't care about the damage. They both started at the same point (genius asshole) but diverged after The Experiment

Althought speaking of the Experiment, now I'm confused. What's the point of the Trinity Processor if the Conduit is what actually made things happen? How do they relate? I feel like I might've missed something wrt that

(Also side note yeah I know that the Conduit is important to the wider Xeno-series lore, but I neither know nor care nor care to know about any of that. I'm happy just staying within the -blade series)

Finally I'll admit that I don't like the change from "creating a universe" (xc1) to "opening paths to other dimensions" (xc2). To be fair this is an incredibly minor change that affects basically nothing in the series and really just boils down to a change in wording. I just personally hate retcons on principle; if I liked it the first time, why would I want it to be changed in a sequel? And so anything like this instantly gets a disproportionate response out of me lol

Last thing I thought of while editing this: what are the abilities of flesh eaters?? I thought they were basically just Blades that weren't dependent on Drivers and could bond Blades of their own. I was willing to accept Nia switching between Driver and Blade forms after her awakening as a hardware limitation or something until I saw the cutscenes were she physically switches between the two forms on-camera. It isn't just an outfit change either, her ears change size and shape! Is that something all flesh eaters can do? Something all blades can do? Is it specific to just Nia, and if so then why?

But Kate was all over the place. Why was she there for? For her sister? And found love for herself? My mother pointer out, very unsettling for me, that Kate doesn't seek to have any lasting effect on her as Edwina. She is the protagonist and yet......

Heya Anon! Thank you so much for the ask and for waiting while I let all my asks sit for the last two weeks. I've just been trying to process the season before answering asks about the new season and also managing some irl personal stuff but I digress.

Everything is under the cut because this got long as always lmao:

When I first saw this in my inbox I'll be honestly I had no idea how to answer it because the lasting impression bit dumbfounded me (so allow me to answer that bit first!).

To me, Kate wasn't lacking or forgettable. But that's my experience and how Kate had already made her place in my heart after I read TVWLM after S1. Even more so when Simone was cast as her because I saw a lot of myself in Kate Sheffield but now Kate Sharma reflected someone who looked like me on the outside as well!!

So no matter how little screen time she got, Kate was always going to blow me away and leave an impact on me.

However, rereading your ask and in retrospect given how much time Kathony and Eddie got compared to the useless B Plots *cough* stupid LW, Cousin Jack and while I love how entertaining Pru, Portia and Philly can be, their screen time this season was 15 mins too long *cough*

Kate was very much shortchanged and compared to Anthony who got his backstory and Kate didn't, it was a very glaring difference. It was really a disservice to the character we loved so much in the book. And it's even more disappointing that your mom had a more lasting impression of Edwina from her breakdown wedding day speech (can we PLEASE get Charithra the Emmy she deserves for that scene). I'm happy for Eddie getting the love she deserves and having a shiny new backbone and agency compared to the books but where was the enhancement and improved characterisation for Kate??

CVD and his team can't say they want to write three dimensional women and then go throw two sisters with the best bond into a love triangle like wtf.

On that note, even if he fleshed out Edwina this season, she was still reduced into a plot device role and was an obstacle for Kathony to overcome. It is SO ironic that CVD thought he did something with Eddie this season. Yes, she wasn't as docile like in the book but as Nia @missfairygodmother pointed out in her post here in a way Eddie had more of a personality in the books. Her main role this season just seemed to be the diamond.

Yes, we did get some insight of her being a nerd and studious but as Molly @newtonsheffield has pointed out in her Ton & Tea videos that while Edwina is very talented in all these things - a polygot, can dance all three dances on the regency dance floor, etc, she had to be taught somehow. It is implied that Kate taught her so Kate has to know all these things too. So I wish we got Book!Eddie's quirks of always carrying a book around, being bored with dumbass Anthony, unconditionally loving her sister. I honestly hated the love triangle with a passion because my fave comedy moments in the book was Anthony and Edwina platonic relationship. They literally had NO romantic chemistry, it was literally crickets every time they talked but like after he marries Kate, he takes her under his wing like a sister because she is Eloise's age so he should have always viewed as a younger sister type!

I'm just really upset that the creative team wanted to prop up Eddie but it was done at the expense of Kate's character. Eddie got to pop off in Episode 6 - WHERE WAS MY DAMN STORMS BACKSTORY IN EP 3 HMMM CVD?? If not Ep3, give it to us in Ep4 AT THE LITERAL LIBRARY STORM SCENE!! Do you know how excited I was to see the library still in the trailer? Super excited, it was one of the turning points of Kathony for me but we didn't get it SIGH.

All in all, anon if you read this far, please know that it's not just your mom and you. The writers did Simone and Kate SO DIRTY this season by not giving her enough screen time or explicit conversations about her past. They always say "Show, not tell" WELL THE WRITERS DID NEITHER FOR KATE THIS SEASON, Simone did it all her damn self. We love to see our queen take the reins of her character and shine on her own when Netflix and the promo are failing to promote her as their lead.

okay I honestly wish I could describe to you what I felt during the last episode… but I cannot. I was full blown sobbing. How are they gonna do this to us Brainia shippers after we’ve come so far. There has to be some sort’ve plot twist where kara goes instead of him or the legion shows up and is like “nvm” or brainy changes his mind- fucking SOMETHING. They can’t just do this no wayyyyy-

I'm right there with you. I had somewhat mentally prepared myself for Brainy getting the news that he had to go back to the 31st century, but what I was not prepared for was the fact that by doing so, he would also be killing himself to save the Coluan species.

In a strange way, though, that gives me something to hope for. If the story we had been presented with here was just Brainy returning to the future of his own volition, then the likelihood of it actually happening would be a lot higher. But, instead, what we see is Brainy being told he has to give his life away, and this is something that he clearly doesn't want. He doesn't want to leave his family, he doesn't want to leave Nia and he most certainly doesn't want to die. But, he's committed to his people, he's committed to the Legion, and although we get to see an absolutely fantastic performance from Jesse showing us exactly how much he doesn't want to be doing this, at this juncture, he believes there's no other way.

But, Supergirl is a show where answers do present themselves later down the line, and somehow I don't see the show ending with Brainy signing his own soul away. Brainy doesn't actually tell Nia that by leaving, he'd also be dying, and I think if she had known that, things would have gone a lot differently. Even still, I am obsessed with the Brainia content we got this episode, I just hate that we seem to get the best content between them when something super angsty, potentially relationship-ending, is happening. (Seriously, writers, tell me where you live. I just wanna chat. Pay no attention to the sledge hammer in my hands - it's for dramatic flare only, I promise).

We know that the Legion are being called in for reinforcements, and we also know that the reason Brainy is being called away in the first place hinges on what Nyxly does in the future. If she was stopped before then, or if there was some kind of loophole that could be exploited, then hopefully that would mean Brainy's life could be spared. And, if Brainy's people weren't in danger, if he was given the choice to stay or to return to the future, I think he's made it pretty clear in this episode what he would decide.

Also, it might be nothing, but a line that 'earnest' Brainy said is really sticking with me.

It is unfortunate that you are burdened with feeling so much.

Now, this line could very well just be pointing to Brainy having so recently removed his inhibitors, but hear me out:

What if Brainy is the most emotional of all known Brainys, or at the very least out of his two counterparts? What if the fact that he feels so intensely allows him to see a path that his other counterparts wouldn't? What if the alternative here is something that can only be seen through the heart, not the head?

Brainy's love for his friends and family is so important to him, so strong, that maybe that'll give him the answer he needs. After all, his earnest self even said he had calculated other options - which means there are other options - it's just that none of them appeared viable to him. But, as I say, he's not our Brainy, he doesn't have the same emotional ties to this place, and so isn't as committed to finding a loophole.

I guess that's just food for thought. We still have the big finale to come, and hopefully something good will come out of it for Brainia.

And... if the worst comes to the worst, meet me here with your ideas on the ending you wanted to see... and I'll write it for you.

Oooh, maybe you could all give me your best ideas and I could put them all together into an extended fic!

But, y'know, fingers crossed it doesn't get to that and we get an ending we want to see. 😉

I think we've been together for 5 years now huh... Going for the 6 I think?? Yeah I'm pretty sure, we had this conversation literally two days ago I'm so bad with remembering the exact dates uejhcdhjs but it's okay because Nia is the one who remembers all the little things she's hella gay just sayin and super caring with a grumpy attitude but that's why she's so precious hehe. But what matters is that we are still together and do not plan to be apart thumbs up!

Damn time flies, it's crazy to think we met on here so long ago thanks to Yu and Mika and it ended up with y'know- all the cheesy stuff haha! But I would have never thought honestly I'd meet my soul mate thank to Owari, so I'll be 5ever grateful to it!!

It's a shame with work and life in general we don't have much time to write anymore as much but it's good to always come back, Nia's Mika literally destroys me every time he's always been from the beginning THE Mika for my Yu, something just clicked since we started rping and my Yu was like POINTS AT I FEEL ATTACKED RIGHT NOW HE'S MY FAMILY HE DOESN'T HAVE ANY CHOICE.

And here we are shrugs.

Concubinage Behind the Scenes - intro

I mentioned a while ago on Twitter that I was tempted to write down behind-the-scenes explanations, different pov, etc, for Concubinage, if there was interest for that kind of things. A few people were interested, so I decided to start now.

In this post, I'll talk about how the idea came to me, and give some details about the settings. The next post will be about the characters (canon and OC) who appear in this fic.

How it started

I've always liked the concept of Arranged Marriage AU where the characters have to navigate developing feelings while being already married. It's no secret I'm a fan of period dramas, and Gaius' backstory is a perfect period drama setting. So thinking back, it's not really a surprise my mind eventually started conjuring up scenarios. I was in the middle of other projects then, so it was nothing serious, just me lowkey throwing ideas out there for fun. Hah.

A month later (Feb 2020), I started writing the first chapter on a whim, refined some of the ideas from my first outline, etc. I was still jumping from project to project then, but I eventually finished it a couple of months later, and got a start on the next chapters, so I decided to post it on 25 April. I was honestly not expecting much--my track record for multichapters was abysmal (5 years between ch1 and 2 of Fractured Lives lol), and as it was an entirely self-indulgent idea, I didn't think many people would be interested. I just thought I'd write a few chapters while it kept my attention, then throw it on the hiatus pile like so many other projects. We now know this isn't what happened XD

Settings

The main project I was working on at the time was a pre-game canon compliant series about Gaius and Wingul's backstories, so I had worked out a lot of setting details already, and just had to reuse them. I drew a complete map of Auj Oule and added a bunch of locations, made up a bunch of clans, etc.

Here is a screenshot of the relevant area:

(unlocalized names because I spent a long time researching potential names that fit with the canon naming theme in the Japanese version)

I named the river that runs through Xian Du the "Xian River" and decided to stick the Long Dau capital (named Xian Yang) on it. Despite the proximity to the Mon Highlands, it's under a different, much milder clime.

Darhan, Gaius' hometown, is in the mountains up north, same kind of clime as the Mon Highlands.

wrt clan territories: the area around Khan Baliq (Kanbalar) and the Mon Highlands belongs to the Sarakhs clan, the clan of King Melard.

The eastern part (starting from the Xian River) is split in two: everything north of Xian Du/Labari is Long Dau clan territory, while the south (down to Hamil and Ilat (Aladhi); the latter is not shown here) is Kitarl Clan territory.

The Nia Khera area is neutral and rarely accessed due to the Kyzyl (Kijara) Seafalls and Xagut Floodmeadows. Then the Rakorum (Lakutam) area belongs to another clan, but I don't think it'll become relevant here.

As you can see, the Long Dau and Kitarl are sharing a border, so there's been a lot of feuding over territories between those two big clans. That said, their territories may be large geographically, but they're made of numerous smaller clans that submitted to them. Those clans often also fight each other, even if they're both on Long Dau territories, for example. So lots of clan fighting lol

Canon Divergence

While this is an AU, it is set in the canon universe--it's just that some events happened differently. It's like a fractured dimension, in a way XD;

The main point of divergence is the Battle of Fezebel.

In canon, following the death of Rashugal's king Milan, Auj Oule's king Melard launched a campaign to conquer Rashugal and rallied all the clans under him to fight. The armies clashed at the Fezebel Outback at the same time as Elympios tested its first Lance of Kresnik prototype, resulting in the outback being swept by a giant tsunami. Both armies suffered tremendous losses (the Outway clan in particular, who lost most of its warriors), and that put a stop to clan squabbles for a while, until Gaius, fed up with the way the large clans toyed with the smaller ones, decided to rebel and conquer Auj Oule.

Here, the battle didn't happen. Melard was too preoccupied with his own internal troubles to worry about Rashugal, so he missed his chance to attack, and business went as usual.

The Elympios stuff and tsunami did happen, though, so the Zenethra is now stuck in Rieze Maxia, and Maxwell created Milla and Muzét as in canon.

However, since there was no one in Fezebel that day, the event went relatively unnoticed, and there was no big tragedy that killed a lot of people and changed many things in Rieze Maxia.

So Arst and Lin... got to have the childhoods they were supposed to have within their respective clans.

Arst is still very much a rebel at heart and doesn't like the way the small clans are treated either, but there wasn't that big event that pushed him to act and rebel for good at 15 like in canon. So he was mostly stewing on his own, showing acts of defiance and insubordination here and there. He also started laying the foundations for the creation of Taurus, but it came much later than in canon, and his plans were interrupted by the marriage.

Meanwhile, Lin grew up as a pampered prince, but the more time passed, the more it became apparent that his personality and values clashed with the clan's ideals. So it wasn't all a smooth ride, even though his life is much more stable than Wingul's was at that time in canon.

On the Rashugal side, things changed a bit too, but some things still played out in similar ways as canon. The Fenn brothers fought for the throne, and Nachtigal emerged victorious, with Rowen at his side. Carrie's still around here (and married to Rowen), so he hasn't turned tyrant (yet?).

The Rashugal-Auj Oule relations are pretty much "we're both too busy with our own problems to fight each other, but you'd better not make any suspicious move toward the border" XD;

Meanwhile, Exodus is doing Exodus things...
