What does Elsa want?
Tumblr media
Since I’ve been on a bit of a Frozen binge recently, I was having some thoughts:
If anyone’s been in the Frozen fandom for as long as I have, we’ve all wondered whether Elsa would ever become attached to someone. The early Jelsa shippers, Helsa (which I do ship, I have my reasons, don’t @ me), #giveelsaagirlfriend trending on twitter, the newer Elsamaren shippers, and so on. Ever since Disney realized the franchise potential of this story, that's been the big question brought up for the past decade.
I will say I can definitely understand the perception of Elsa being aromantic/asexual because honestly, think about it: considering her past struggles with controlling her powers and her fear of hurting those she loves, it’s probably very difficult for her to be vulnerable with other people, even platonically with her own family. If she was that uncomfortable being around others and trying to manage her issues, how uncomfortable is she with being in love? Being desired? Wanting to be with someone?
No matter what options they go with for her in the 3rd sequel, it might be an interesting perspective to see this more vulnerable side of Elsa, if they choose to give her a romantic partner, because for the past two movies we’ve only gotten the perspective of her focusing on herself. She wanted to learn the truth of who she was and to make her peace with it, no longer denying her magical abilities or trying to shove them down out of fear. She wanted to reconnect with her sister and try to have a family again. But what does Elsa want for herself beyond that? Who can really stand on her level and approach her?
In spite of her connections with her sister and the rest of her family, there is still a level of unapproachability to her because of the dissonance between her humanity and the almost mythic nature of her powers. Even though Anna loves her sister, we can observe that even she struggles sometimes to understand Elsa’s powers, especially her role as the Snow Queen/the 5th Spirit, and Anna falls back in awe of her like everyone else. It’s like this quote from the movie The Philadelphia Story (which is a great movie btw, highly recommend):
Tumblr media
“You're like some marvelous, distant, well, queen, I guess. You're so cool and fine and always so much your own. There's a kind of beautiful purity about you, Tracy, like a statue.”
To which Katharine Hepburn’s character replies:
“I don't want to be worshipped. I want to be loved.”
Does Elsa want that kind of love? So far, the answer’s been a tentative “no,” at least from the writers and cast. Whether it's because of the potential conservative outcry or disappointing the lgbtq community yet again is anyone's guess, but for now I can only assume that leaving her unattached has been the safest option for Disney so far.
But since we’ve already crossed the threshold of Elsa’s self-acceptance and self-realization of her powers, where do we go beyond that in terms of her character? It’s only natural to wonder what she wants beyond understanding herself, being comfortable with her powers, and being accepted. She has a supportive family, is making friendships with the Northuldra, and has a kingdom that loves her, but does she stand alone or can someone meet her at her level? Romantically or otherwise? Who can challenge her, really?
Tumblr media
Tracy Lord: "I don't seem to you made of bronze?"
Macaulay Connor: "No, you're made out of flesh and blood. That's the blank, unholy surprise of it. You're the golden girl, Tracy. Full of life and warmth and delight.”
Does she have to remain this mythic goddess that everyone admires, who has to have a dress transformation/inspiration anthem about self-actualization every movie? What if she had a moment where she was grounded and had to focus on something besides her powers? What if she lost them? How would that affect her character then?
Those are questions I hope might be answered in Frozen 3. I'm fine with whatever choices they make in terms of her sexuality, as precarious at that may be, but I just think it would be an interesting aspect of her character to explore whether or not she could have an equal, or whether or not she can finally come down to earth.
Tracy Lord: "How do I look?"
Seth Lord: "Like a queen. Like a goddess."
Tracy Lord: "And do you know how I feel?"
Seth Lord: "How?"
Tracy Lord: "Like a human. Like a human being.”

Elsa + Queen Disa VS Elsa + Honeymaren
A conversation about this before it turns into a discussion beyond what I'm seeing in my social circle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The look of Queen Disa from the "Frozen Podcast" was recently revealed, and due to her interaction with Elsa in it, a new shipp is being born in the Frozen fandom: Elsa + Queen Disa.
I haven't watched the entire podcast yet, but I've seen some analyzes and in fact Elsa and Disa have a lot of interesting scenes: they start off having problems with each other because of their thoughts about magic and technology, they eventually end up helping each other (especially Disa helps Elsa), and in the end they really become friends, promising a new moment for them to meet. It's almost like "enemies to lovers".
And because Elsa + Honeymaren is the current shipp, it is obviously leading to a certain principle of rivalry. And a lot of people jumped on the theory that Elsa is a lesbian because of Elsa + Honeymaren, and now we have a new girl to steal some of the spotlight.
Tumblr media
I went through this myself in "Frozen 2" with the appearance of Elsa + Honeymaren to the detriment of Elsa + Marisol. As I said before, I had certain problems with "Frozen 2" at the beginning: I hated the separation of the sisters and that Marisol was technically replaced by Honeymaren. It took me a while to understand "Frozen 2" and accept ElsaMaren, and especially to understand that Honeymaren is the mainstream version of Marisol, the version that Disney could take to the cinema.
And so today we have an absence of the Northuldra tribe in material that precisely addresses the Enchanted Forest, and in Honeymaren's place we have Queen Disa who is appearing on the "Frozen Podcast" alongside her sisters.
A few days ago I made a post talking about the possibility that in “Frozen 3” instead of having an approximation of Elsa with Honeymaren, there would be an approximation of Elsa with an original woman, a more mainstream character and free for Disney to use in merchandising. And therefore be different from a woman linked to a tribe that exists in real life and that perhaps has some control over her image, as is perhaps the case with Honeymaren. And now we have Queen Disa.
I really don't believe that Queen Disa is in "Frozen 3", although a podcast released close to the franchise's anniversary is more mainstream than a book or a comic, I still don't think it's relevant enough to be the gateway to a character that it will be in a film... but I could be wrong, I never rule anything out.
Tumblr media
But unlike my initial problem with Honeymaren, I don't intend to create any resistance to the possibility of a new woman for Elsa. As long as it's a woman I have no problem.
And one last text about Elsa + Queen Disa vs Elsa + Honeymaren. Queen Disa and Honeymaren are almost opposites:
Disa seems to be much more extroverted while Honeymaren has already demonstrated that she has some problems speaking in public (Disney Magic Kingdoms).
Disa is a book girl, Honeymaren is a warrior.
Disa is knowledgeable in technology while Honeymaren has some knowledge in magic.
Disa is the girl of the city and modernity while Honeymaren is the girl of the forest and traditions.
Whether it was a coincidence or not, I found this interesting, and it's really easy to see Elsa pairing up with the two women: friendship beginning until an eventual romance.

I’m back on Tumblr, so it’s time to talk about GAY FROZEN! The movie is gay. All of it.
Okay, not all of it. But a lot of it!
Daily reminder as I yeet myself back onto Tumblr that Elsa is freaking gay okay? That’s how we’re gonna start this and the main thesis of this bullcrap will be Elsa’s obvious gayness.
Tumblr media
I’m sorry, but in this scene (only moments before Elsa is shown talking to Honeymaren while holding her hand and gazing at her face) there is clearly some gay stuff going on. Note the absolute HOPEFULNESS on Honey’s face when she looks at Elsa and says “you belong here, you know?” in an extra hopeful tone? And the way Elsa actually does stay there with her?!
Tumblr media
And earlier in the movie when they’re talking to each other it looks just like that scene from Tangled where Rapunzel is talking to Eugene! If it was a girl or boy the calm and wholesome way they talk to each other while maintaining steady eye contact and all that wholesome stuff would be read as a romantic connection, yet here it’s just shrugged off by the people who watched it as friendship. Yes, it could be that, but it also could be more and y’all aren’t even willing to suggest that alternative simply because they’re both girls.
Let’s talk about Oaken! He’s gay and has a husband and kids, and it’s clearly seen in the first movie.
Tumblr media
Yes, I’m aware the tall girl with brown hair could be his (snore) wife. But all the kids honestly look more like the possible mother other than the blonde hunk, so it doesn’t make too much sense. If that woman was the wife and mother, why does she look just like all her kids except one, and the one doesn’t even look like her or Oaken? It would make much more sense if the blonde guy, who looks older anyway, was his husband and the kids were adopted. Yes, realistic genes usually don’t mean much in animated films, but then why are Elsa and Anna and their family designed to look related? And Honeymaren and Ryder from Frozen 2 look related as well. So yeah.
BACK TO ELSA! So, you see, if Oaken is gay, it would be perfectly reasonable for her to be given if this is true the franchise has tackled gay characters before. A gay Disney Princess would be awesome and given the first two movies showcased Elsa’s own personal journey and journey to mend her relationship with her sisters, a third movie could in turn have her beginning a romantic relationship with someone who very well may be a woman, and very may well be Honeymaren given the way they behave in the second movie. It seems to me like the Frozen 2 interactions are like Raya and Namaari from Raya and the Last Dragon— homoerotically toned friendships that seem to all but outright say that the two characters are gay. Except with Honeymaren and Elsa their friendship is shown a lot less given the movie is about Elsa’s self discovery. Unless, you know, Frozen 2 is merely setting up the building blocks for them to get in a relationship later. A girl can dream.
Did any of that make sense? I hope so. Because come on, Disney. A lot of people don’t like you know and some of your actions have gone to crap, but you can at least try to fix things by ceasing to support genocide and just maybe hearing us out and giving us a gay Disney Princess— hopefully Elsa, because that girl is gay-coded as all hell.
