boy; girl; dragon
Hiccup only needs two things. He knows he can rely on both forever.
masterlist
There is a boy, and he has a girl. And also a dragon.
The order matters. He had the girl first, even if he didn’t know it yet. She didn’t say a word to him about the feeling beating against the bars of her ribs like a dove in a cage, not until he did first. The dragon helped things along, surprisingly. Usually, fire-breathing reptiles can only complicate a situation, but when two young people are soaring through the sky with only the billowing light of the sun and stars around them to bear witness to the truths they have to tell, secrets end up not so secret anymore. Hiccup told you he loved you. You said the same.
The dragon watched, and listened, and waited. It, of course, had known the whole time. Almost everyone did. Tact is a rare occurrence among the Vikings, but the people of Berk could tell that interference in the story of you and him, him and you, would not bode well. You and Hiccup were something different, something special. You didn’t need anyone but each other. And the dragon.
Loving a Viking is dangerous. Loving Hiccup was so far along the line of adventure and risk that even your first kiss felt like throwing off your armor to embrace a knife in your chest. If this was pain, though, it was the loveliest anguish you had ever experienced in your entire life. Falling in love with Hiccup was brilliant, like dragonfire; exhilarating, like tumbling in freefall; unfailing, like the son of a chieftain knowing that he would send his entire village to keep you safe from harm or die trying. Staying in love with him was soft torchlight, quiet mornings, wispy clouds around your temples when he took you up to see the stars. Easy. Perfect. And yours, all yours.
The two of you are together now, sitting side by side on the edge of a cliff. Most of Berk is rocky with occasional splashes of slate blue or chestnut wood to break up the monotonous grey, but tenacious patches of grass have managed to crawl up to the top of the cliffside here, providing you with a threadbare emerald blanket on which you can rest your legs.
A cool wind whistles through the air, toying with your hair and clothes before plunging off the edge of the rock face. You watch it go, taking a few errant leaves with it, and consider the drop down to the sea below you.
“If I fell right now,” you say to Hiccup, “off the side, you would catch me.”
“I would catch you,” he affirms. “Dragon or no dragon.”
“What if I fell too fast and you couldn’t reach me in time?” You ask.
He takes your hand, voice soft and gentle in the early morning. You’ve heard him louder and more assertive when directing the villagers, but you like him best like this, when Hiccup’s peace is only ever meant for you. There is an entirely different young man who exists only when he’s alone with you, a Hiccup that no one will ever know as well as you do. It is a delight to keep the secret of this second, inner boy. It’s a treasure that will only ever be claimed by you, a sparkling spread of gold and jewels captive to one person and one person alone. Not even blood relations can claim that sort of glory.
“There is nowhere you could go that I would not follow,” Hiccup asserts. “Not off the cliff. Not into the sky. I would follow you past the sun, or a hundred thousand lengths in the sea. I would search the world to find you, if I had to, and I would bring you back with me. Always. Do you believe me?”
“I do,” you whisper. “Always.”
“Always,” he repeats, and presses a kiss to your temple.
This is loving Hiccup, then. Always. Always the guarantee of a heart beating in tandem with yours. Always the confidence that you will not be alone in this world of yours, even as it seems to stretch out forever, even as it looms to hide a hundred friends or a thousand enemies. If the odds are with you or against you, you will have Hiccup to guide you through the trials and tribulations of this life of yours. It is written in the stars, and it is sworn by the one you love. No promise could be greater.
The two of you will descend into legend, into myth, into folklore. Never in the world have any two people loved each other more, and never will they again. Every young pair thinks that they could have this, a love to last a lifetime, but you and Hiccup will do them one better and last a thousand more. You could love him in every universe, every incarnation of yourselves, and Hiccup has already promised to be by your side no matter who you two were. Gods, maybe. Heroes or villains. Ordinary lives or glorious ones. All of them will feature the two of you together. Always.
A shadow briefly blots out the sun overhead, a pair of jet-black wings soaring through the early morning skies. As it loops and wheels towards the two of you, its shade flickers across the trees, dappling them with night’s fury even as the sun climbs higher into the sky. It occurs to you that you’d like every day to start and end like this one, for each one of your hours to be filled with this sort of blissful joy. You don’t need riches, you don’t need a legacy. All you need is right here before you. A boy and a girl. And also a dragon.

Daydreams
A/N: Rufflout oneshot, because it's an underrated pairing that deserves some love-- for no other reason than they'd make a spectacular dumpster fire of a couple; and I'm honestly here for it.
Rating: T+
----------------
No one suspected Ruffnut had much going on inside her head. Most of Berk assumed the space between her ears was rather vacuous, save for a permanent cloud of mischief and chaos that shot out hairbrained schemes at random intervals. What they did not realize was that she possessed a vivid imagination. True, it was at its best when augmented with a little dragon nip, for flavor; but even by its own merit, her capacity for daydreaming was impressive. The only drawback was that she did not wield much control over it.
Indeed, it could be a bit of a problem. Hidden behind her distant gaze, while she picked at her fingernails or absently twirled her heavy braids, was an entire world that consumed her. At its epicenter was a certain short and beefy Hooligan. A few years ago, she would never give him a look; but sweet Allfather, hormones were powerful.
Anything could set off a fantasy--a much better name for it, really. His laugh, the way he could chug three tankards of beer in rapid succession, or even the stupid way in which he stopped to admire his own reflection whenever he could. He was a dumbass, truly--but oh, gods, was he a beautiful one.
"What are you looking at?" she would bark when he caught her staring, much to his utter confusion.
Unbeknownst to him, they were just rolling around in the sands of her imagination, shoving hands up and under articles of clothing as if their lives depended on it. She did not know for sure, but at least in her wild daydreams, he was a good kisser. Then, there were other parts of his body he wielded with equal finesse.
No, he had no idea as he challenged anyone who would listen to an arm-wrestling match, that he was also doing rather scandalous and impolite things to Ruffnut in her mind; it was a personal achievement to maintain such a blank facade while the fires of lust ranged beneath her skin. She mastered the art of scowling at his dumb face, while she thought about all the ways she might make him beg.
But she heard tell that fantasies were better left as such. Undoubtedly, Snotlout would leap at the chance to act out any of the scenarios that manifested, unbidden, in her brain. Maybe she was not the wisest, but she was not a complete fool, either. She and Snotlout were a volatile couple, outside of her salacious imaginings. Whenever he opened his mouth, she wanted to put her fist in it. At the same time, she wanted his lips all over her. In reality, he found her antics rather exhausting, but could not get enough of her in her mind. Daydreams gave him unfettered access to her body, but she kept him at arms-length with her abrasive attitude in the real world. They were destined to crash and burn--like the Red Death; any previous attempts to get close to one another ended that way.
She wished they could get along as easy as Hiccup and Astrid, who made the most infuriatingly perfect couple--but Ruffnut did not do perfect; she did messy. At least, she did so in her daydreams, pulling Snotlout down on top of her, shoving her tongue in his mouth. They were a disaster, unfolding anywhere and anytime she fancied it. He was clueless, and she liked it that way. No permission was necessary to undress him in the places they could never go.
"I hate you," she often told him.
"No, you love me," he would boast, just to get her dander up.
While he was not right, he was not exactly wrong either. The truth was not a binary; it existed somewhere in the space between. So did her unspoken attraction, and all trysts that never happened, which would remain comfortably nestled among her dirty little secrets, right where they belonged.

lost and found - ezra bridger
Request: nope Pairing:  ezra bridger x jedi!reader Summary:  along with the remainder of the ghost crew and ahsoka, you're trying to find ezra Warnings:  HEAVY SPOILERS FOR AHSOKA S1!!! im warning u dont read this if u havent seen all of it yet Word count:  1.1K A/N: I survived the war (im posting fics again) but at what cost (brainrot has taken over)
your music is blaring through the speakers of your ship as you're working. though your ship isn't in need of any repairs, you're always finding new modifications and additions to upgrade it. at this rate, it's unrecognisable as the ship you once got from a sketchy dealer on an outer rim planet.
working on your ship is also a way to distract yourself. when you're focused on working with your hands, your mind doesn't wander off.
it doesn't wander off to hera and jacen aboard the ghost. it doesn't wander off to sabine and ahsoka on her T-6 shuttle. but mostly, it doesn't wander off to ezra. you try not to think about the fact hera is on an unauthorised mission, that you haven't heard from sabine and ahsoka in a while which is unlike them, and that you feel like you're not even a little bit closer to finding ezra.
even though you haven't seen him for years, you refuse to believe he's gone. you tell yourself you would simply know if he didn't make it. before you lost him, the two of you shared a strong bond in the force. you figured if something had happened to him, you would have felt it.
but after all of these years, it's hard to hold on to hope. you really want to. but at some point logic has to take over.
though recently, hope has sparked in you yet again. with the map ahsoka found, the chances of finding ezra have increased. you are optimistic again.
but the search hasn't been without danger. even now, you're worried.
which is why you're working on your ship. otherwise you'd just pace around or stare off into the distance with your mind running around in circles getting lost in the "what ifs".
a faint beeping sounds pulls you out of your thoughts. you get up from your position underneath one of the main consoles and get your comm.
'general syndulla for commander y/l/n.' comes hera's voice.
'go for commander y/l/n.' you say.
'hey y/n, where are you right now?'
'just working on my ship in the main hangar back on base.'
'new modifications again?'
'yeah, yeah, I know. "a good ship doesn't need modifications." well, I like them. the ghost could use some upgrades as well, you know.'
'no thank you, my ship is perfectly fine.'
you chuckle as you wipe your hands on your pants.
'have you heard from sabine and ahsoka yet?' you say. 'and when are you coming home from this unauthorised mission?'
'sabine and ahsoka are alright, we're actually on our way now. and we have some news regarding ezra.' says hera.
'you have news on ezra?' you say, unable to hide the relief in your voice. 'do you know how to find him? or where he is? is he okay?'
'we'll talk about it in person. we should be arriving soon.' says hera.
'I'll wait for you.'
'see you soon.'
hera disconnects her comm, leaving you alone with the music again. your mind is racing. they have news on ezra. you knew it, he's still out there somewhere. you're sure of it.
you quickly put the panel of the main console back and tidy up your tools. just as you pause your music and exit your ship, you see the ghost and ahsoka's T-6 shuttle getting closer to the hangar.
you anxiously await them, watching as they carefully land. the shuttle door opens and sabine and ahsoka come out of it.
sabine smiles as you half walk, half run up to them and pull them both into a hug.
'I'm so glad you guys are safe.' you say. 'it scared the shit out of me when I couldn't contact you.'
'we're alright.' says ahsoka, patting you on the back.
you pull back to look at them. they both look tired, but other than that they seem fine. sabine has a twinkle in her eyes and smile on her face.
'what is it?' you say. 'do you know something about ezra?'
'yeah.' says sabine. 'but hera should tell you.'
she points to the ghost, where hera has just exited the ship. jacen follows her, but is looking over his shoulder and talking to someone. at first, you assume it's merely chopper.
but as they walk further down, you see it's not chopper at all. it's a young man. he's wearing colourful robes and has a beard and curly hair.
it doesn't matter he's older than he is in your memories. it doesn't matter he still has the same eyes and the same scar on his cheek. it doesn't matter something in the force tugs on you so strongly, as if it has found its home.
none of it matters, because you would know him anywhere, in any universe, no matter who you are.
ezra. your ezra. talking with jacen as if nothing had ever happened. he's here, he's alive.
a sob escapes your mouth as you take off.
'ezra!' you yell.
you don't even bother to hide the tears as they stream down your cheeks. after all this time, he's finally here.
for a brief second you see his smile before you crash into him. you wrap your arms around his neck and bury your face in his neck, holding him impossibly close. you're never going to let him go.
words fail you as you just cry into his shoulder.
you feel ezra's arms around your back and get lost in the feeling. it's all so painfully familiar, as if no time had passed at all. yet you know everything has happened since the last time you saw him.
you slightly pull away to look at him.
ezra is smiling at you just like he did all those years ago. though he's older, he's still the same. still the same kid you met on the streets of lothal.
you reach out and brush a finger over the scar on his cheek.
'you're here.' you say breathlessly.
'I am.' he says.
you'd heard his voice in your dreams and memories and the recording sabine still has. but this is different. it means everything and more to you.
'you're as beautiful as the day I lost you.' you whisper.
'I dreamed of this day.' says ezra. 'thought about all the things I would say to you. it all seemed so simple. but now? I have no idea. nothing seems like the right thing to say.'
'but it is simple.' you say. 'I love you.'
ezra smiles even brighter. 'I love you too.' he says. 'I always knew I would see you again. we have a lot of catching up to do.'
you smile as ezra leans in and kisses your forehead. you'd finally found each other again.

I totally forgot that:
1- Changewings can hypnotize people.
2- Hiccup has actually (kind of) trained a changewing in the past.
How. Are. We. Not. Talking. About. This.
I know this doesn't have that much fic potential or anything (except if your a weirdo like me and love the potential of hypnosis in almost every sfw situation). Like??? Phantom made Hiccup kiss Tuffnut and other stupid things just so he could not have the time to train her?? That's so freaking cool.
I need changewings hypnotizing people, I need this to be a chapter of RoB/DoB where the teens are actually suffering because the changewings are causing trouble in Berk WILLINGLY.

Picnic Date (Short Chapter)
You and Hiccup started dating. Both of you wanted to do something together like going out or flying together. But Hiccup wanted to do something different. He wanted to take you on a romantic picnic date.
You didn’t mind, you love picnic dates. In the forest, Hiccup decided to tell Fishlegs to help him set up the hanging lights around the trees and help with the fireplace. He wanted the date to be more perfect. He knows what spot he can take you.
Toothless wanted to help too. He has feelings for your dragon, (D/N). He wanted a picnic date too with your dragon. So Toothless and Hiccup went on a flight to catch fishes for your dragon. He also wanted the date perfect too. Hiccup knows that Toothless likes (D/N) so he grabbed the basket full of fishes in there.
You were in your hut, reading a book. (D/N) is sleeping on the floor while you are reading peacefully. (D/N) loves to sleep, she doesn’t like to be disturbed. As you were reading, there’s a knock on the door. You went to see who it is and it’s Hiccup.
“Hey (Y/N). I hope I’m not disturbing you.” He smiled.
“No. You didn’t disturb me. What are you doing here?” You asked.
Hiccup told you to follow him and you did. You and (D/N) followed him through the forest and you saw something that caught your attention. Lights coming through somewhere between the trees. You didn’t know what it was so you decided to check it out. As you were about to check it out, you saw so many hanging lights, a fireplace by the cliff, a picnic table, and many flowers on the ground surrounding the picnic table. You were flabbergasted how beautiful it is. You had no words.
(D/N) saw Toothless with a basket full of fishes in there as he carried it with his mouth.
There is a sunset that has a beautiful view. You loved it. Hiccup went up to you and took your hand to sit down with him as he pulled up the basket which had food in there. He knew what favorite food you like. You loved it. The date. Sunset. Lights. Fireplace. The spot is a perfect place for a picnic area.
After you guys finished your food, Hiccup wanted to take you on a romantic flight. You agreed. You mounted your dragon and so did Hiccup.
Now it’s night, You and Hiccup started flying together on your dragons. You loved the date so much. Hiccup loved it too, and so did Toothless. After the flight, you guys went back to the picnic area and started chatting. (D/N) and Toothless are cuddling each other. You guys had fun and wanted to do it again.
“I love you, (Y/N).” Hiccup said, hugging you.
“I love you too, Hiccup.” You replied as you hugged him back.

The Feather and Boulder
Snotlout x GN Reader
589 words
TW!: none :), fluff
(Snotlout x OC here)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Footsteps thunder through the forest, one feather-like, the other bouldering after. Leaves and twigs snap back and forth as the two vikings run, the reason for running an outsider may not know.
“(Y/n)!” the boulder shouted. “Give me back my helmet!”
The feather turned around and held the desired item up high so the boulder could see. “Why? You compensating for something, Snotlout?” they stuck out their tongue, and delved deeper into the dark timber. Snotlout stopped to catch his breath, bending over at the waist with his hands on his knees.
“Fine! You win! Can I have my helmet back please? (Y/n)?” Snotlout shouted into the dark, not knowing where the feather was lurking. Sneaking up behind Snotlout, (Y/n) raised their hands above their head, the helmet now placed on their crown, and struck their hands on the unsuspecting boulder’s shoulders.
“BOO!”
All that was heard was a shriek that one might think came from a little girl, when in reality it was a grown Snotlout. (Y/n) wasn’t prepared for the shriek, so it was no shock that the feather covered their ears to block the sound that came out of the boulder. Once Snotlout realized what happened, he looked around and cleared his throat.
“*ahem* Uh huh, that-that didn’t scare me one bit,” he crossed his arms to prove that he went unfazed after the scare.
“Oh really now?” (Y/n) questioned. They began to stalk towards Snotlout, making the viking walk back towards the nearest oak. His back hit the ruff bark, their hands cornered his noggin on either side so his only focus was on them, which was their downfall.
“If I didn’t scare you then why can I hear your heartbeat?” The boulder looked the feather up and down, and the boulder cracked.
“Because you look cute with my helmet on,” Snotlout looked (Y/n) dead in the eye, they stepped back shocked at what he said. Immediately the hunk of metal went flying towards Snotlout, it was caught without trouble, they turned their back towards the viking, flustered at what was just revealed. Their hands shot up to cover her mouth, thoughts running just like they did, wondering what just happened.
Snotlout readjusted his helmet, now smirking as the tables have turned in his favor, he crept slowly towards the feather, soon enough his breath warmed the back of (Y/n)’s neck. Widening his arm span, he swung them back inwards towards their body, gripping them in a bear hug.
“And,” he breathed. “You look breathtaking no matter what.” they spun around within his arms, not believing a word Snotlout was saying.
“Snotlout, I-,” before any other words could come out, he picked them up at the waist and threw them over his shoulder, (Y/n)’s view now showed them where they were just standing. “Snotlout! Put me down! I am perfectly capable of walking myself!”
“Not a chance babe, last time I let ya walk freely I lost something very dear to me,” the boulder continued on unbothered at what happened a few moments earlier, as if the viking on his shoulders didn’t weigh a thing, and with his pride intact.
The feather didn’t like the predicament they were in, but they didn’t mind it either, the boulder was very soft with them, despite his exterior. They could always count on him to not ruffle them, even if it was for fun and games. And, he could break open and show them his crystals knowing that they would admire him for him and not his exterior.
hello, I saw your post earlier :D
For the fanfic prompt ask:
I had an idea that’s been haunting me, namely: httyd - Snotlout and the twins being overly competitive over something (eg card games. These guys would tear each other apart verbally during werewolf I swear)
thank u and have a nice day!
Saturday Night
Fandom: HTTYD
Words: 482
Rating: T
Warnings: swearing, mention of weed/alcohol
Genre: humor
AU: Modern
Notes: they are 21
Also I’ve never played werewolf so I wouldn’t be able to write that correctly (sorry). And I haven’t played Mario Kart in a while so don’t fact check me.
Saturday night was the favorite of all nights among the group of friends. Ever since they were fifteen they would get together at one of their houses and have a sleepover. The night always consists of junk food, games, and pranks. This year however alcohol and weed were a big part of the night. And so things got a bit more wild and a whole lot more competitive, well at least among three of them. Hiccup and Astrid had gone outside to get some fresh air, everyone knew they were actually making out somewhere, and Fishlegs had fallen asleep about an hour ago so now Snotlout and the twins sat in the basement playing a game of Mario Kart.
“Are you fucking kidding me Ruffnut! Another green shell,” Snotlout yelled, nearly throwing his controller across the room.
“This is payback for your banana you jerk,” Ruffnut replied, kicking her friend in the side.
“Well stop using all your items on me and use them on your brother, who is winning by the way! Though how he is doing that when he is high off his ass is beyond me. No wait, he's always high,” Snotlout said, taking a jab at his best friend.
“You’re no better than him, you drunkard,” the blonde retorted, grabbing her drink.
“Hey! I’ll have you know I’ve only had two beers tonight, no three,”
“Oh wow, I’m so proud of you,” Ruffnut said, the sarcasm practically pouring out of her.
“Will you two quit flirting, it’s disgusting,” Tuffnut interjected, his eyes never once leaving the screen.
“You’re disgusting,” Ruffnut said, Snotlout nodding his head in agreement and following up with the snarky reply “Yeah, when’s the last time you showered?”
“Two days ago,” Tuffnut said, though it sounded more like a question. Ruffnut rolled her eyes in disappointment but her mood quickly changed when she got a golden mushroom and was able to win the game.
“Who’s the best, I am! You two are stinky, dirty losers,” she taunted while doing a little victory dance on the coffee table. Tuffnut pushed his sister off the table and threw his controller at her head. “No, you’re just a cheater you little…cheater,” he pouted.
“Yeah, well you gave me a crappy controller anyway. I would have won if I had a good one,” Snotlout added, placing his feet on the table and leaning back against the couch.
“Wow, you guys are such sore losers, and all because you lost to a girl that's a bit sexist don’t you think.” Snotlout scoffed, looking over at Tuffnut with an expression that said ‘What the heck is wrong with your sister.’ Tuffnut shrugged his shoulders, grabbing the remote and turning on some random movie. Ruffnut chuckled to herself before sitting back between the two men and wrapping a blanket around her and Tuff, she sure did love the feeling of winning.
Thank you 🙏 😍🥰🥰
'we'll be brave together' - hiccup haddock
masterlist
Tumblr media
Hiccup is returning from a wild dragon ride through the clouds when he realizes that he might finally know the secret of the bravest Viking Berk has ever seen.
It’s not like he’s the first one who’s tried to parse out the details of Y/N L/N. There’s hardly a soul in the village who hasn’t. Y/N has been the strongest of the strong, the fastest of the fast, ever since she started training. Everyone their age either wants to be her or beat her, and neither option is remotely reasonable.
Hiccup is no stranger to Y/N’s reputation. How could he not? She started training to fight dragons a year early, purely because it was so obvious she would be an asset to Berk that the elders couldn’t wait to put her out there. She’s been saving lives since she was small. Hiccup wouldn’t be surprised if her first words as a child were a rallying call to arms.
Courage inspires courage, but it’s impossible to see someone that naturally good at everything without trying to find some chink in the armor, a way, no matter how miniscule, to prove that they’re still human. Still like you. But no matter how hard people search, Y/N still seems relentlessly, impossibly perfect. Sure, she has her off days, just like anyone else, but she’s so good that it doesn’t even seem to matter. There has to be something off, but no one else can figure it out.
Except Hiccup, maybe. Probably not, but maybe. Hiccup’s no stranger to the maybes of the world. He’s proven quite a lot of them in his time. Maybe Hiccup, skinny, clumsy Hiccup, could manage to do well in the dragon fighting classes. Maybe he could save Berk from threats. Maybe he could do a decent job of governing a tumultuous group of Vikings on one of the most inhabitable rocks known to man. And maybe, just maybe, he could find the loophole in Y/N L/N’s otherwise flawless streak of victories.
Hiccup only gets the idea when he’s touching down from another dizzying flight. No matter how many times he and Toothless take to the skies, it never gets old. Somehow, each and every time Hiccup and his dragon leave the world behind, chase the stars, shoot the breeze, it feels like Hiccup’s very first time up in the air. The majesty never leaves him.
And so Hiccup was very reluctantly starting to plan out his landing when he saw Y/N below him. Ax in hand, she was probably coming back from yet another round in the training grounds, and judging by the cocky grin on her face, she’d probably been very triumphant yet again. She had a victorious bounce to her step, and as she headed back to her house, it seemed as if nothing could happen to break the young woman’s stride.
Nothing, that is, until Toothless swooped in low from the side, casting his shadow upon the ground where Y/N walked. She had done her best to hide it, but Hiccup had seen it– an uncontrollable flinch, a quick jerk of her head towards the sky to assess the threat, and then, so foreign to him that Hiccup almost wondered if he had mistook another girl for Y/N, a spark of fear in her eyes.
Fear. In Y/N L/N. It made no sense. Hiccup has never known Y/N to be afraid. Not even when facing off against Vikings twice her height. It’s as if the word has simply never entered her vocabulary. Yet the memory of Y/N’s reaction to the arrival of Toothless is burned into Hiccup’s memory as if by a brand. Yes, there’s no doubt about it. Y/N was afraid.
This should mean nothing at all. Berk, although recently accustomed to think of dragons in friendlier terms, has been an enemy of the scaly fliers for as long as Hiccup can remember. A recent change in their mindset would not substantially change their long term memory, which firmly cements dragons as a dangerous enemy. Of course anyone would flinch upon seeing a dragon suddenly emerge from the clouds, especially a Night Fury.
But Y/N isn’t just anyone. Now that he comes to think of it, Y/N has been rather separate from the rest of Berk regarding her reaction to dragons descending upon the village. She has yet to adopt a dragon, claiming that she’d rather prove her skill as a Viking by herself instead of needing to depend on a dragon to do the work for her. And back before Hiccup even crossed paths with Toothless at all, he has memories of Y/N during her dragon training days, how she used to completely lock down her emotions, facing the dragons when required but never so much as looking at them unless she absolutely had to do so.
It couldn’t be, yet it is. The more Hiccup thinks about it, the more he’s certain it’s true. Y/N is afraid of dragons. Not just Hiccup’s dragon, all dragons. Hiccup feels a sudden rush of sympathy for the woman. Although she’s as proud and brave as any, being around the thing she fears the most day in and day out must be taking a toll on her spirits.
And so, although it’s probably a terrible decision, Hiccup makes up his mind to help her as best he can. They’ve never really been friends, in fact, quite the opposite; Y/N was in accordance with the typical Berk mindset that Hiccup was a nuisance since he didn’t quite think like the rest of the Vikings, and they’ve clashed over that ever since. However, Hiccup remembers quite painfully what it was like to fear what everyone else seemed to embrace, and it’s a nasty feeling. Y/N doesn’t deserve to suffer through that, even if their relationship hasn’t always been the sunniest.
True to form, Y/N is glaring at him from the moment she opens her door to find Hiccup smiling awkwardly at her from the front step. “What do you want?” She asks crossly, making it obvious that she has far better things to do than entertain him.
Hiccup grins weakly. “I think I can help you.”
Y/N raises a dubious brow, taking an obvious glance over Hiccup. “You do? With what, philosophy?”
Hiccup forces a chuckle. “Maybe some other time. No, I’m talking about your, ah, dragon problem.”
If there was any doubt in Hiccup’s mind that Y/N was really afraid of dragons, it is completely erased from the moment he brings up the subject. Immediately, her entire expression ices over, but even as her glare sharpens in value, he spots something bright behind her mask, something like fear. She really doesn’t want anyone figuring out, does she?
Y/N glances around quickly to make sure no one could have possibly overheard, then quickly jerks her chin towards the inside of her house. “Fine. Come in.”
Inwardly, Hiccup cheers. He wasn’t entirely certain that she wouldn’t do something drastic to protect her secret, like stab him in the back or shove him into the sea. He still runs the risk of being poisoned, but he figures he’s safe from that so long as he doesn’t eat or drink anything while he’s here.
Once they’re both sitting opposite each other across her wooden table, Y/N fixes him with a steely gaze. “Start talking. How did you know that I–”
Her voice trails off, but Hiccup can guess she’s talking about her fear of dragons. “I only figured it out recently, honest. I had no idea until just now. No one would guess.”
“Yeah, I try to keep it that way,” Y/N remarks dryly. “But you could tell?”
“You don’t like Toothless,” Hiccup explains. “And yeah, he is a Night Fury, and that takes a little while to get over, but most people in the village consider him an ally by now.”
“Except me,” Y/N supplies, glancing towards the table.
“Yeah,” Hiccup agrees. “Except you. Plus, the hesitance to get a dragon of your own.”
“No Viking should accept a dragon unless they can defend themselves!” Y/N argues. “Otherwise, you’ll leave yourself stranded in case something happens. It would be a monumentally stupid risk to take.”
“I feel like that’s a really targeted comment,” Hiccup complains, “but yeah, even with that argument, it made sense once I connected the dots. You’re afraid of dragons.”
Y/N’s eyes narrow. “Did you just come here to hold that over me? What is this, blackmail?”
Not a fan of the way she’s eyeing the carving knife near her place at the table, Hiccup hastily raises his hands, feigning surrender. “Hey. Hey. No blackmail. That wouldn’t be very, uh, Viking of me. Where’s the strength in that? And you know I’m all about strength. And courage. Lots of courage. In fact, that’s why I came here today. I want to help you get over your fear.”
Y/N looks at him doubtfully, but at least she’s stopped inching her hand towards the carving knife. “You want to help me.”
“Yeah,” Hiccup replies earnestly, “I do. It’s better for all of us if we don’t have to feel like we’re hiding things. So? Will you let me help you?”
Y/N stares at him for a long time. At last, she jerks her head up and down in a sharp nod and says, “I will.”
Hiccup claps his hands together excitedly before pushing away from the table. “Perfect. I already have a first lesson in mind.”
Y/N looks substantially less inclined to trust him when she realizes that her first lesson involves getting to know Toothless on a far more personal level. “I thought we were going to ease into this. Like talking about it or something.”
Hiccup shakes his head. They’re both walking through the forest, crunching leaves and stepping over fallen boughs on their way to meet up with the Night Fury. “Not a chance. You don’t gain anything from talking. Besides, I figured you’re the kind of person who likes action over sitting around.”
“I do when it doesn’t involve dragons,” Y/N mutters from somewhere behind him.
Hiccup just grins. “You’ll like Toothless if you give him a chance, honestly.”
They emerge into a clearing. Toothless is curled up in the center, soaking in the sunlight. Immediately, Y/N freezes behind him. Now that she doesn’t have to try and hide from him, Hiccup can see firsthand how bad her fear truly is. Y/N’s eyes are wide, and her breath seems caught in her throat. She seems unable to move a single step.
Hiccup comes back to her side. “Do you trust me?” He asks plainly.
“I think,” she whispers back, her eyes still firmly fixed on the resting dragon in front of her.
“That’s fine,” Hiccup tells her. “At least believe me when I say there’s absolutely no chance that I’d let you get hurt. It would look awful if a chieftain’s son got his best fighter killed by his own dragon, wouldn’t it? You know it’s my responsibility to lead Berk, do you really think I’d risk my popularity by getting you murdered?”
“I trust that,” she admits, and lets Hiccup lead her further into the clearing, until she’s right in front of the dragon.
Sensing visitors, Toothless pokes his head up, exhaling a soft snort from his nose. Y/N flinches back from the movement, but to her credit, she doesn’t try to run.
“This is Y/N,” Hiccup tells Toothless. “You two are going to get to know each other, alright?”
Toothless regards Y/N with faint curiosity. Hiccup reaches out and presses a quiet hand to the dragon’s snout. “Now it’s your turn, alright?” He tells Y/N.
Y/N shakes her head quietly. “There’s no way I’m touching the dragon.”
“He’s not going to hurt you,” Hiccup promises. “Come on, we’ll do it together.”
He takes his hand away from Toothless’ snout and presses his palm against the top of Y/N’s hand. Slowly, carefully, he moves their hands together until they’re both resting against Toothless’ snout. Y/N breathes out once, a great sigh, but doesn’t move. Carefully, Hiccup takes his hand away, and then it’s just Y/N and the dragon. Toothless leans slightly forward into the touch. Hiccup waits for something to happen, for Y/N to flinch away again or give in to her fear, but instead, a shaky smile crosses her face.
“He’s nice,” she says.
Hiccup pulls a face. “He’s only trying to impress you.”
Even his feigned irritation can’t last for long. At the sight of the quiet joy on Y/N’s face, Hiccup can’t help but smile as well.
“What’s my next lesson?” Y/N asks.
“Flying,” Hiccup says. “Do you feel ready for that?”
Y/N glances back towards him, a cross look on her face. “I’m a Viking. I’m ready for anything.”
She laughs, though, and so does he. “I was hoping you’d say that.”
Hiccup climbs onto Toothless, then extends a hand to help Y/N up as well. Toothless, to his credit, is quite gentle when going airborne, although Y/N still holds tight onto Hiccup just in case. He’s not sure that he minds, though. She doesn’t, either, because she keeps holding onto him, even after the flying turns smooth, even after the colors around them flit from saturation to saturation, as clouds frost their vision and the air grows cold from height.
“I’ve changed my mind,” Y/N announces as they soar over the sea. “Nothing about this is scary. I can’t believe I waited this long to figure that out.”
“It grows on you, doesn’t it?” Hiccup remarks. “All of a sudden, it’s the only thing you want to do.”
“Yeah,” Y/N says. “Exactly like that.”
When he looks back at her, Y/N’s expression is soft and sweet. He doesn’t think he’s ever seen her like this, unafraid to be vulnerable, to let her real self shine through.
“Thanks for helping me,” she says quietly.
“Any time,” Hiccup promises, and he realizes he means it.
She smiles. “You have to be careful, I might take you up on that offer.”
Hiccup meets her gaze, and finds nothing but happiness there. “I’m looking forward to it.”
Below them, the waves surge, and the birds swoop. They fly on forever.
I've always thought about the fact that if Jack was in the httyd universe, then he would 100% get along with the light fury, and that would be why Jack and hiccup meet. Because toothless and the light fury do first, but then kinda 'force' hiccup and Jack into a friendship, maybe something more?
