Hi, i'm a newish bl drama watcher from thailand that just started watching thai bls. i'm a bit ashamed to say that for a long time as a gay man living here i've been avoiding bl shows like the plague cuz of both the fandom reputation and of misconception from my yaoi era which i leave far behind. i'm just want to ask how did you got into watching thai bls and what were you preconception before you got into it.

Welcome to the Tumblr side of BL fandom. I'd actually like to also hear more of your experience with yaoi and BL as a gay person growing up in Thailand if you're willing to share.

For me, I'm a Black American from the Gulf Coast (the South). I grew up in a Catholic city and spent my entire adolescence in the closet. Despite having a sense of who I was as early as 8 years old, I kept most of that to myself. Because I didn't talk about it much with people, I found out most information about queer media and queerness from the internet.

I entered BL via queer cinema. I think the first explicitly gay character that I remember from TV was Marco from Degrassi: The Next Generation. There were probably others, and definitely more subtle expressions, but when I think about the oldest gay character I remember and connect to, it's Marco. I don't like counting things like shipping Shawn and Corey on Boy Meets World or Tai and Matt on Digimon for oldest gay characters. Sailor Moon can't even count because we got a censored version of it in America.

I got access to satellite television away from observing eyes around age 16 and started watching content on Logo back when they aired gay content regularly. I watched basically whatever I could late at night. It's how I saw movies like Get Real (1998), Beautiful Thing (1996), and Bent (1997). It's also how I saw Queer as Folk (2000-2005) Noah's Arc (2005-06).

After hitting adulthood I mostly got lost in video games and standard American TV for a while, but I did basically show up to any Gay Event in TV. I appreciate that Stef and Lena from The Fosters (2013-2018) were some of the only TV lesbians to survive the horror of 2016.

I watched a bunch of movies in this time, many of which appear on the Queer Cinema Syllabus I made for a hypothetical Westerner new to BL and queer cinema, which @wen-kexing-apologist has decided to try to complete.

I got into Thai BL in 2018 accidentally. I started seeing gifsets of Kongpob telling Arthit he'll make him his wife passing around Tumblr and was basically like, "Right, what's all this then?"

I had watched a few Thai gay films, mostly notably Love of Siam (2007), Bangkok Love Story (2007), How to Win at Checkers Every Time (2015), and The Blue Hour (2015), but this was the first time I was seeing a long series made available so easily from any Asian country.

From there I got into Make It Right (2016-17) and Love Sick the series (2014). Once I realized that yaoi had moved beyond manga and a few anime adaptations, I went looking for a lot more. I basically haven't left since I started in about 2016 with SOTUS.

There's my basic entry into the genre. I don't think I was as worried about fandom and worries at the time because so much of being a fan of queer cinema was a mostly-private experience for me for so long. I didn't realize that BL fans active in the space would predominantly be women or queers figuring themselves out. It took a while to adjust to that, and also to adjust my expectations of the kinds of queer stories BL distributors were willing to fund.

That being said, I tend to agree with @absolutebl that BL has a useful role in normalization for non-queer audiences who encounter it. I like cheering BL when it does things I think work really well, and also deriding it when I think it does things that are offensive to help nudge the genre and offer my perspective as a gay man.

I like the place we're at right now where there's way too much to watch for any person with other hobbies and responsibilities because it means that people can pick and choose what's to their tastes.

More often than not, I'm probably most-invested in something airing from Japan because of my melancholy nature, but there's so much variety these days that it's okay if you don't like everything. I certainly don't!

INTRODUCING REBELCAPTAIN SMUT WEEKEND MONTH

I'd made a promise to make something smutty, and I'm here to keep that promise. In the legacy of the much beloved Rebelcaptain Smut Weekend, I'm organizing a Rebelcaptain Smut Weekend Month! Since I felt like a single weekend was just not enough time for all the smutty goodness, I thought why not do four weekends instead? This gives us more to look forward to and more time to create.

SCHEDULE: the event will run during May, every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (so that means May 3-5, 10-12, 17-19, and 24-26)

RULES

✩ the obvious ones: your creation has to be about Jyn and Cassian, and since it's a smut themed month, it should be at least a little spicy!

✩ I'll be using the tag rcsmutmonth for organization. feel free to tag your creations with it too so we can all find each other's works!

✩ no sign-ups required, anyone can participate. if you see a prompt you like, and you want to make something for it, go ahead!

I can't live like this, I made a post about how much the group still needs Eddie and @joseph-quinns made a stunning gifset of it which planted my ass FIRMLY back into seething rage territory over the damn flashlight. So hear me out okay, hear me out

That scene? Where he wraps up the flashlight? That's not just a flashlight and that's not just a one-off. Yes, Eddie protected a beacon of guiding light to send with Steve into the dark, but that's not random. That's a purposeful narrative act!!

In 4.05, at 38 minutes in, the party almost in full enters the darkened Creel house, the den of the beast. Lucas tries to turn on the light, and it fails. Dustin pulls out a flashlight and clicks it on- and here's the parallel. Steve asks him where everyone got them, and Dustin (Dustin, who point-blank told Steve "you die, I die" last season, Dustin who is closest to Steve next to Robin, Dustin who is closest to Eddie, the bridge between the two) gives him a reproachful look and asks him if he needs to be told everything, reminds him that he is not a child, and... tells him where to find a flashlight. Doesn't give him the light, doesn't turn it on. Expects Steve to be taking care of himself.

Which is fine, it's fine, he's a kid, a teenage boy. This isn't to speak on Dustin's character.

But it is to draw the parallel line right up alongside Eddie, who (in 4.06 on the lake) doesn't wait for Steve to ask. He doesn't ask if it's needed. He pulls out a plastic bag from within his clothing, dumps his own belongings on the floor, and uses the bag to wrap up the flashlight, to prepare a beacon for Steve. Eddie solemnly hands it to Steve, something I'm not sure it would have even occurred to him to ask for (they are all so used to the darkness by now). The light is already on, shining bright, when Eddie passes it off with the soft, mundane protection of a good luck.

THIS is what they need. In every war, there are medics. There are healers. There are the helpers, the support. There are those who are the home to come back to, the reasons worth fighting. The ones waiting with clean water and a hot meal and a soft blanket. Even in the midst of the worst days of his entire life, Eddie looks at the warriors around him and says "I can give them light, I can give them a home, I can give them protection."

He can wrap up a flashlight, he can steal a vehicle that is most like a home, he can build shields. He can buy them time.

And perhaps most importantly? Dustin, early on, didn't hand Steve the light. But... by the end, he is building a shield alongside of Eddie, learning how to protect others.

And that's why the flashlight is important.

Yes, comment and Kudos and share the fics you enjoy.

But also, comment on artwork you enjoy. Leave tags on gifs. Give comments to podficcers and vidders who receive no appreciation at all. Have you looked at the Hit to Kudos ratio for the vast majority of podfics lately? A podfic might get hundreds or thousands of downloads but only twenty Kudos and a comment or two if that. It's sad.

I feel like we often talk about how important it is to leave feedback for writers, and that's true. But other creators put just as much time and effort into what they make and receive far less feedback and encouragement than writers do.

People like and reblog fanart and gifs without a peep assuming they don't just take them in and scroll on by.

They download podfics and watch fanvids and don't even give a like or a Kudos or a thank you.

Written works are by far more appreciated than every other medium in fandom.

Not to say writers couldn't always use more appreciation, but don't forget about everyone else.

Just because it only took you five seconds to look at a piece of fanart or a gifset doesn't mean it didn't take the artist hours upon hours of work. The same can be said for podficcers and video editors. These pieces of art and multimedia creations often take days or weeks to complete, so hearing crickets?

It's just as discouraging for those creators as it is for writers.

We'd have more fanart. More gifs. More podfics and fanvids and creations of all kinds if creators were at the very least thanked for what they do.

Please just keep that in mind. Authors aren't the only ones who need a boost.

every time i remember that gifset of daniel laughing and talking pre-race with max and his dad in spa 2014 and realize that max saw daniel win his third race and red bull's 50th race live and IN PERSON....like daniel must have seemed so cool and larger than life. and then come to find out a few weeks later it's max's test and he had made a welcome video for him. like...it's too much they're TOO MUCH.

This response got ludicrously long.

It’s such “fated to be in each other’s lives forever” shit. It’s always been Max and Daniel. In 2011, before Max was even a red bull junior. In 2014 at spa, ahead of Max being announced for toro rosso. In video form at his super license drive, when Max being his future teammate wouldn’t have even been thought in Daniel’s mind. The things Max got to see Daniel achieve and dream that he might have that and more, and the hot guy doing it is paying attention to him.

He wins that race and backs him, saying he couldn’t have done what he’s about to do and saying Max has the talent to be there… I just know it was good to hear that the man you just watched on the podium believes you deserve this oppprtunity. And if he wasn’t ready at your age and is sitting in front of you a three time winner, what can you achieve by his age?

Obviously, Max has never needed other people’s validation on his skill. He knew he could be successful and had no issue staring his naysayers down. He’s a cactus, not a delicate orchid. You cannot kill him. Your opinions mean nothing to him if you are not in his inner circle (though Daniel certainly worked his way into being someone whose opinion Max holds, hears, and values).

But still, it has to be nice to hear back then that there are people with achievements you want who believe you’re capable of getting there. Even the most brave-faced sixteen year old (with a father who tries to toughen his emotional resolve by saying he will never be anything more than a truck driver) still appreciates having someone believe in him, even if he doesn’t need the validation.

I think people tend to wrongly characterize young Max as some delicate friendless loser and Daniel was the only person to ever show him kindnesses etc etc etc. Max is extremely confident and never relied on Daniel to build self-worth or whatever pathetic way people try to write him. But he always just glowed around him — textbook of that first crush that makes you have the italics “oh. oh” moment. It’s very apparent that Daniel meant a lot to Max as a teammate and that the two of them just liked being around each other, such an anomaly for that era of f1 (ex: like they mentioned in on the sofa 2017, Lewis, — who had been busy with the life altering downfall of his relationship with Nico — was in awe of Max and Daniel and asked for the scholarship of how they got along so well).

It’s so clear that this draw between them started for Max so early from just the way he looks at Daniel on that phone, shy and not knowing quite what to say, and his gaze lingering on it even after it stops playing with that smile. He has to tear his attention away to say his sweet little praise of Daniel. Daniel respected Max as a serious competitor from day one with his quotes about Max’s talents, and that already meant something to Max — but then he also went ahead and liked Max and was kind to Max in a time where he was drenched in doubters.

It’s a great tragedy that we will never know what it would’ve been like to see the two of them in a car that could compete for championships. Obviously tensions would have altered their relationship (I mean, the Renault engine frustration and natural increase in rivalry as it became Max’s team already meant their relationship improved post-leaving), but I’m going to be delusional and think that they never could have hated each other in that bone-deep way because they like each other in a way that is so natural that it feels encoded in their DNA.

Things would have gotten messy as competitive battles do, with many a wall punched and inflammatory quotes in the media pen — especially as Daniel would have to reckon with the inevitability of Max being a generational talent whose already sharp elbows in their early days only doled out more hits on the road to WDC. It’d be claws out, teeth bared tension.

Still, I employ my delusion to say that in that universe, at the end of their careers, they could sit on Daniel’s farm and still enjoy being around each other — like Daniel said in 2019, they had a heated rivalry and pushed each other, but there was always respect. At the end of the day, Max has never stopped looking at Daniel outside the track with anything but effusive love, and Daniel is always there looking back with his mouth open and ready to make Max laugh — and I genuinely believe they would have cared enough about each other to keep their fight contained to the environment and time period and rebuild anything lost when it’s all said and done.

It’s the eternal thesis of them, that everyone has said a million times over: they like each other so much, so genuinely, without a veneer of fakeness and PR to it. They’d like each other in any universe in any conditions, even ones where they were built to hate each other. There could still be fighting and resentment and cold shoulders, but they are not built to hate each other, and that’s why I like them so much.

What is UraIchi Week?

It’s a week-long fanworks event to promote the Urahara Kisuke x Kurosaki Ichigo ship. There’s no sign-up, it’s just for fun, and everybody can participate. Completed works and wips are both acceptable, and any type of fanwork (fanfic, fanart, gifsets, etc.) is welcome. NSFW and/or potentially trigger-y content is allowed, although please remember to tag your works properly.

The ship itself can be written romantically or platonically, as lovers or friends or even enemies, so long as it stars these two characters together in some way. Poly ships are also fine so long as Ichigo and Kisuke are still the focus of the fanwork. And crossovers and fusions are also allowed even if it isn’t one of the given prompts for the event. Basically, anything goes, and the only criteria is that it has to be UraIchi-centric.

Kära Hillisar, dear followers, my fellow Young Royals fans,

Season 3 filming has started today, and what better time to announce a celebration of everything the show has already given us? So wet your pencils, chuck that writer's block down the drain, and mark your calendars, because with deepest pride and greatest pleasure we welcome you to the very first Hillerskalibrary fandom event:

Young Royals week 2023!

The week will run from the 24th to the 30th of April and is open to all content creators who are active in the Young Royals fandom. A playlist for Stedrika? Hell yes. A 5k fic centered on aro-ace Sara? Bring it on! A quick stick figure Wilmon doodle on the back of your Espresso House bill? We wanna see it!!!

What is Young Royals week? A fandom event where all YR content creators are invited to create new content for the YR fandom. Each day of the week, we here at the hillerskalibrary will post a new prompt to inspire creators to come up with a short fic, a quick doodle, or something else entirely. The end result will be a sort of potluck of new content to read, admire, enjoy, share and discuss!

Sounds cool! How do I sign up? You just did! Because this is an open event and we want to encourage as many people as possible to participate, there are no formal sign ups. If you wanna join, you can, simple as that!

What pairings/characters are allowed? All of them. No really! We might do more specific events in the future, but for this one there is no limitations for certain pairings (canon or not!) or characters - as long as they feature in YR somehow.

What type of content is allowed? All of it. No really! Many people think of fic, of course, but there's plenty of other possibilities: playlists, meta, headcanons, gifsets, collages, picrews, ... (amigurumi wilmon, anyone? no?)

I'd love to participate, but I'm not sure I'll be able to create something every day. What if I don't have time? Or am not inspired by the prompt? Then you skip a day. Or two. Maybe you'll do nothing all week and create seven things on the last day. Maybe you'll do three things for one prompt and none for the next. It's all good! No stress, okay?

I'm not much of a content creator... can I still participate? Look, someone's gotta comment on all the fic and reblog all the art, no? (also I think you could TOTALLY do that stick figure doodle)

Gah see the one thing I can't do with the EDAs, and it drives me up the wall nuts, no matter how much I do agree that they are meant to be books and that's the point of them, that they only metatextually and even thematically work as books, and obscure forgotten books at that - the one thing is, I can't make vids. Gifsets either. God, you have no idea how much I wish I could vid this series.

So many things, so many astonishing visuals and cinematic parallels, so much I want to string together in a coherent form and I can't, I just can't. Like, the actual factual thing that caused me to fucking Mandela-effect myself into misremembering the series as a 90s tv show in the first place was imagining a fanvid about Fitz's fashion sense set to Macklemore's Thriftshop, of all fucking things, BUT. While yes, obviously that would be a work of unrivaled genius, it's not just that. Over the years it's become this endless want, this constantly seeing gifsets and screencaps and vids, vids, above all else, vids, of all the different moments there are.

There is (of-fucking-course) a blog (at least one, but maybe many more) dedicated exclusively to making gifsets of every time destiel touch each other in all contexts. Of fucking course there is. I scream with envy over this because like. That could be us, if only the EDAs had any footage at all, but it's a goddamn (brilliant, daft, exceedingly stupid) BOOK SERIES instead. Every time Eight/Fitz touch? Fitz is in fifty books and they are both extremely touchy; you could absolutely dedicate an entire fucking tumblr blog to making a gifset of each of those moments; you'd be making gifs for fucking years.

I want to bestow upon them the highest honor I could give: a fanvid about their insane nutso relationship set to Vienna Teng's Never Look Away. I want a Sam vid set to Marina's Oh No! I want an Eight vid to the Indigo Girls' Galileo. I can see all these so so clearly and I want to share them with the world. I want a gifset of thematic uses of the color red in Sam's early books episodes books. I want to hear Sail on Sailor and know how the fuck the diagetically composed Dr Who theme would actually sound on violin or acoustic guitar, with its unspeakably tender lyrics. I want someone's painstakingly color-corrected, digitally restored, hi-res slo-mo shot of Fitz in his princess fairy tale wedding dress flying around on a jetpack.

Like they are books and they're supposed to be books and it's significant to what the silly things are trying to say, and also quite frankly there is no way in hell any doctor who ever, even now, could pull off even half the shit they got away with via the infinite budget of the page, and they certainly could not have made say, YIT in the 90s and have it look anything but silly and cheap when it needed to look real, BUT. I wish I could see it. I wish I could make the vids I see playing in my head when I reread these silly, edgy, annoyingly smug, painfully earnest, wildly creative and visually stunning FUCKING books.

Why do you think there is so much animosity between Sansa fans and Dany fans? I can understand how conflict comes up between Sansa fans and Arya fans given the conflict between the characters but I can’t figure out what the issue is with Dany fans vs Sansa fans. It can’t JUST be because of shipping, right? I’m a big fan of Dany, Arya, and Jon, but I still do like (canon) Sansa as a character and honestly see a lot of similarities between her and Dany. Their stories have definite parallels and anti parallels and I don’t really know why I don’t see anyone else talk about it. Every time I try to talk to a Sansa blog or a fellow Dany blog about it, I never hear back. What gives??

I don't like the both siding in this ask. Sansa fans keep spewing hateful nonsense, farcical theories and made up headcanons in the form of 'intellectual' discourse in the Dany/Arya/Jon tags and then when book fans of those characters respond, the so called 'neutral' bnfs pretend both sides are to blame.

All this explained very clearly here.

And while I personally feel that Dany and Sansa have very little in common as characters, there's a lot of fandom metas/essays/gifsets and fanarts paralleling these two as fandom faves. You should be able to find them on many of the character blogs if you are interested in that sort of thing.

IMO, Daenerys is clearly written as a tier I main character. She drives her story more than any other character in the series as the sole representative of her house and considering how isolated she is from every other POV character. The story in her POV is about her.

If we are looking at parallels, then it's Daenerys and Arya who have a lot of commonality in their way of thinking, their concern for the little guy, in their ideas of justice and dispensing that justice, right and wrong, their toughing it out on their way to the top, their proactive nature in getting things done, to be in charge, their love of nature etc.

With respect to the increase in toxicity from the Sansa fandom post show, then yes, that's because of shipping and Jonsa. A lot of the hate that the character of Daenerys gets is from Sansa fans - especially on Tumblr - because of her foreshadowed future relationship with Jon Snow and they want fanon, self-insert Sansa to have Dany's plot importance and story in the books. It's different on asoiaf sites like Reddit and Westeros.org - the majority of Dany hate on there is from Stannis/Jon Snow fans who are not big fans of a female character being the prophesied chosen one/top dog of the series.

And I point to shipping being the big reason because of my personal fandom experience on this site. This is me going down memory lane but I remember around 2015/16, I wrote these angry, frustrated posts calling out the TV show for taking Jon's book plot and writing that for show Sansa and Sansa's actions in the Battle of the Bastards in season 6. At that time a lot of Dany fans were also big Sansa fans and attacked me for being a 'misogynistic dudebro'. I am not naming names - shit's in the past - but I used to get blocked and get hateful inbox messages for criticizing show Sansa's actions.

During season 6 there were so many posts about Jon Snow being an useless idiot who deserved to die, Sansa was right to not tell him because he's a moron, Sansa's the politician/general who knows best, she deserved to be queen, Jon's the worst for stealing Sansa's birthright else Sansa and Dany would have ruled as best queens of westeros etc. - all from Daenerys fans!!

This was some kind of superficial notion of girl power with Sansa and Dany girlbossing around Westeros, bow down before these Queens sort of thing and fuck the actual book story. Arya was never included in these conversations because she did not wear dresses and Maisie Williams was not conventionally beautiful like Emilia Clarke and Sophie Turner and therefore did not fit into these Girlboss headcanons.

And then before season 7 was when we got the leaked spoilers of Jonerys meeting at Dragonstone. And this was when the full toxicity of the Jonsa shippers was unleashed. This was when we got 'Political!Jon' and all sorts of vile hate for Daenerys and more and more Dany fans started to react to that hate from the Sansa fandom.

Fandom always, always influences our likes and dislikes of characters (This is why I stay away from some fandoms - I don't want to end up hating characters) And this is what happened here. The Sansa/Jonsa fandom was so vile that a lot of Dany fans on tumblr stopped stanning for Sansa.

Fast forward to 2019 and the same Dany stans - again, not naming names but the very same Dany stans - who attacked me for being a sexist, male dude for critiquing show Sansa in season 6, started critiquing show Sansa when Dany got the same treatment that Jon, Arya and Bran got before her with the show tearing down these characters to prop up Sansa. Suddenly it was no longer misogynistic to call out how these characters were being torn down in order to prop up Sansa when they share scenes with her 😂😂😂.

That’s why I don’t hold much stock in words like ‘misogyny’ and ‘sexist’ randomly thrown around without context by the stans of female characters to attack people for critiquing said female character. I have been at the receiving end of this for years from the Jonsa fandom because I call out their utter nonsense.

The sexism and misogyny occurs when a female character is criticized for doing the same thing a male character is praised for - for ex. Daenerys gets a lot of this because she has parallel arcs with Jon Snow and very often she gets attacked for doing the same things that Jon is praised for. Even the show did this - Dany getting unfair flack for executing traitors when Jon Snow and the North do it all the time. The sexism is in how Arya gets attacked as being ‘male-coded’ because she’s not the right kind of girl. The sexism is in the slut shaming and commentary about how Daenerys is not the right kind of rape victim. The sexism is in the popular theories like political!Jon - wherein Jon Snow turns into LF 2.0 and sexually manipulates and seduces a rape victim.

Sexism is not simply liking a male character or critiquing a female character - there needs to be context. One does not simply throw around these heavy words simply to attack other bloggers to win fandom points. The word then loses it’s meaning.

So yeah, I ended up going on a tangent about my fandom experiences when the show was running. I do think a lot of the beef and toxicity in this fandom comes from shipping and Sansa fans wanting her to be something she is not. They want her to be a tier I main character with the story revolving around her love life as she Disney princess rules the North with sewing and dancing. And this leads to them diminishing the actual main characters and taking away from main characters to give to her. Naturally fans of the main character are going to push back against this.

And Sansa is a classist, sexist character and so her fans espouse classist, sexist viewpoints to justify her actions. Their love for all things 'traditional' and sticking to the status quo - 'Jon being KITN would be boring, he should stay a bastard, Arya being lady of WF is not right as she does not want to wear dresses, Dany will be mad like her father she can't escape her genes, Tyrion is doomed' etc. is based on Sansa being a traditional, pro-status quo character. Hence why there is so much clashing of ideas and discourse happening in the fandom.

So yeah. Honestly, I am just tired of seeing all these posts bothsiding fandom drama and making it seem like all the stans are equally responsible when the majority of fandom toxicity is started by stans of one character - Sansa - with the result being fans of other characters pushing back against their nonsense.

🥺🥺🥺 AWWWWWWWW...... thank you so much for asking!! I LOVE talking about my sweet boy, I really can't get enough -- or should I say... Kenough™ HAHA AM I RIGHT-- [gets yanked off the stage]

What made me laugh the hardest?? Oh my gosh... there's so many moments to choose from... that's like, nearly every line he says... I gotta list a few, I can't pick just one!

There's that scene where Barbie says "you're very brave, Ken", and he WHIPS HIS HEAD AROUND SO FAST. And just stares at her for a long moment before saying breathlessly, hand over his heart, "thank you, Barbie." It makes me laugh because there's NO music, you just hear the creak of the medical table and you see him whipping his head so quickly I'm shocked he doesn't sprain himself. Then, even more dead silence, him just staring at her with widened eyes for a few more moments. That scene will make me laugh so much that it's kind of concerning. I don't think that scene is supposed to be as funny as my brain is taking it. I will be inconsolable every time that scene shows. I have to try to laugh as silently as possible in the theater as if I'm not fucking dying. Afterward the way Doctor Barbie says to him "and what a GOOD JOB you do at beach :)" her tone is not unlike the way someone praises their dog for being a good boi 😭💖

The expression he makes when dancing next to Barbie. my god. it makes me crack up every single time 😂 I couldn't get a good screenshot without it being blurry, but here is a gifset of the scene. and the little disappointed rejected dance he did when walking away during girl's night makes me giggle...

Can't forget ☆ "SUBLIME!" ☆ because that made me laugh so hard the first time I heard it in the theater, I had tears in my eyes

Ken walking away from Barbie and staring at her the entire time. His swagger in his stride. The little "not now, Margaret" imitation he did. The growl when Barbie told him not to get into trouble and his excited "I'm gonna see if there's any books on trucks :D" smile DROPS into a snarled "I WOOOOON'T!!!!!" A lot of moments in his western outfit were hilarious. Oh my God. "Do you have the time?" "You respect me?" The -- what was that little bow/tip of his hat when he walked away saying "I shall seek my fortune there" for!!! god everything he did in the real world was just so fucking funny

So many other things made me laugh so hard I was wheezing but I'd better stop here.

What part made my heart soar the most??? Oh my goshhh ummm... wow lots of parts... I think the time I can feel my heart really physically swelling in my chest, genuinely to the point where I am SO FULL OF LOVE that I can't help but SIGH it all out of me, every single time, is when I'm Just Ken is playing. Especially when they show that move in the beginning where he folds his hands over his chest, and when he's rolling his fists toward the camera. OH. And when he's crossing his hands over his face while running, showing that he's hiding/running from his own vulnerability as he suppresses his emotions while falling further and further into toxic masculinity... I'm sighing a LOT during that song but I know it's consistent when it comes to those three scenes specifically.

THE CUTEST! THE CUTEST THE CUTEST SCENE EVER THE CUTEST IS HIM GIVING BARBIE THOSE PUPPYDOG EYES WHEN HE SAYS "HEY BARBIE. CHECK ME OUT 🥺" AND THIS NERVOUS BREATH HE TAKES TO PREPARE HIMSELF ... and when he pleads Barbie "what if there's beach? 🥺" and the little smile he gives her after. oh my god. oh my goddd!!!! and the HUGE smile when he asks "can I sit in the front?" 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 AND THE PROMO PHOTOS WHEN HE'S LOOKING AT HER SO FONDLY AND AND AND WHEN HE'S 🥺🥺🥺🥺 SMILING SO BIG JUST SO HAPPY TO HOLD HIS GIRLFRIEND 🥺🥺🥺

THE BEST OUTFIT??? Oh. Okay. Okay. Okay. I have many favorites. My Ultimate Favorite™ changes everyday, rotating between his denim outfit, sailor outfit, faux mink, western outfit (I love the swagger in his step when he wears it)... also LOVE the all black in I'm Just Ken, also when he wears nothing but pants in the beginning of that song while dramatically sitting on the bed slkfjsfsdf I love so many of his outfits. His Barbie jumpsuit... his camper van shirt... that swirled magenta & blue shirt he wears when he's standing at Barbie's pool... the iconic Kenough™ sweater... basically anything he wears, I'm looking at him with big ol' heart eyes and appreciating them all for one reason or another 😍😍😍😍😍😍

I MUST mention that I have a certain fondness for his... I call it his "lightning jacket"? I think he looks so soft in it. I wanna hug him so bad. I know he's the BIGGEST ASSHOLE during the scene when he's playing the guitar at Barbie for 4 hours straight (a song about an unhealthy relationship, no less) but hear me out: he looks SO hot while doing it 😩 I like to imagine him having a protective, even somewhat possessive arm around me when he wears this jacket, his collar barely covering my sparkly lipstick mark on his neck. He'd learn all of Nick Blaemire's songs on that guitar just for me, I KNOW it!!! I think I'd pick this outfit to be my Top Favorite if I was forced to pick just one...

I always think about him giving me his necklace too, because of Ryan saying in the "Top Ken Things" video "who knows, maybe one day, you'll get the baddest Barbie in the game to wear your chain" and I rly rly RLY love to think about him being SO PROUD to put that pendant around my neck and he tells me to wear it everywhere I go so everyone (especially the other Kens) knows I belong to him. Even when the patriarchy thing is over and he's somewhat "better" (I cannot bring myself to say the word "redeemed") he says to me "you don't have to wear it, Keri, I know I messed up and I lost your trust" and I'm like "no bitch are you kidding this thing is mine forever wtf no take-backs!!! my love is unconditional babygirl!!!! now let's get you some therapy <3"

A year ago today, I posted the last chapter of my Arthur Returns fic, so I feel like celebrating by sharing it with you. Again...

A Little Unsteady by Saltedkiss

"I’m tired,” Merlin said quietly as he stared into the flames. “I feel like an old man, even though I don’t look the part. I can’t even remember how long I’ve been wandering around. The lands around me are changing and I just... don’t.”

He knew Freya was looking at him, but couldn’t bring himself to meet her eyes.

“I’ve lost my magic. I’ve lost - ”

“Arthur.”

Just hearing the name was enough to make his stomach clench. Freya threw another piece of driftwood onto the fire, allowing him some time to gather his thoughts.

“I’ve lost my purpose. Even if he ever returns, what use would I be? I couldn’t even protect him with my magic, how could I ever be enough without?”

After fifteen hundred years of waiting for Arthur's return, with little more than his own mind for company, Merlin's memories of his life in Camelot have faded almost entirely.

All this time, Arthur has been watching from behind the veil, desperate to find a way to help Merlin restore his magic. When Arthur finally makes his way back into a now unfamiliar world, he'll soon learn times have changed since he's last set foot in Albion. Retrieving what's been lost might not be as easy as he'd once thought...

Writing this fic has brought me so much joy. It’s my take on what happens after diamond of the day. As it did to so many of us here, that episode left me utterly broken. Anyone who isn’t in the fandom might think I’m exaggerating. You’re reading this post so you know I’m not. So I decided to fix it. To give our boys a happy ending. Even if the road to this happy ending would be covered in capital-A-angst.

A part of the show’s finale kept replaying in my mind. The “I don’t want you to change. I want you to always be you.” Over and over and over again. What if that’s why Merlin lives forever? What if that’s what happened? And I went with it. Started writing. The story starts right after Arthur dies in DOTD, but the first part I wrote was actually the scene in which we see the state Merlin is in after 1500 years of being haunted by images he’d rather forget but never really can. My Merlin in this story is a broken mess, much like I was after the finale. Slowly healing him throughout the story did the same for me.

This story has inspired beautiful gifsets, memes and a moodboard by my dear friends and cheerleaders @camelotsheart @forever-rewatching-merlin and @shana-rosee and one of the story’s scenes has been brought to life by Fynnian on AO3

A Little Unsteady means so much to me, and every single comment is cherished and reread more often than you’d think possible. So this is me, one year later, sharing it with the world. Again.

The imitating-the-head-movement thing is soo great, tbh, I wonder if he was directed to or if he did that on his own. There's some really brilliant "little acting" in this show that's just so very good. I rewatched the S2 finale, and that scene with Cathy (not her eyebrows!), when she has that discussion with Ma Mary, he's full on beaming at his mother's pathetic claims about how much she's missed him, face completely dropping at Mary's "well you did dump him here quite a long time ago!", the way he says "Mum's had a lot going on" - that was sooo nailing the abandoned child in denial about their parent's lack of affection, brilliant, but also Mary's reaction!! When her eyes stay on James for a second before going back to Cathy going on about her business, you can literally watch Ma Mary's heart break for him! Considering there's some quite silly slapsticky comedy and over the top physical stuff in there as well, in some moments we really get to see how much *serious* acting talent there's assembled in this cast! ("Serious" acting talend in addition to comic acting talent, which is obvious in practically every scene I mean)

yes, totally agree! there's some really, really top tier "little acting" from the entire cast (face acting, i think it's called? idk, don't quote me on that, i am not a trained actor).

in the same vein as the "little acting," the background acting in derry girls is just so excellent. i remember an interview with one of the main cast members where they talk about how tiring some of the long filming days would be because, even if they didn't many lines, they are always in the scene, reacting or doing something in the background. orla/louisa harland gets a lot of recognition for their/her background antics, but i think james/dylan llewellyn is really, really excellent with his background acting too. and, imo, it leads to a really rich text to work with as a fic writer and makes the show endlessly layered and rewatchable. i still feel like i pick up on new things when i revisit the show.

mine and @derrygirlstrash's fic, making moves, is grounded in only a look that erin gives james in the dark when the gang is sneaking into the protestant boys' room in 2x01. she's concerned about how she "doesn't have any moves," looks back at james anxiously, he very clearly notices, and then his next line is about how "boys like girls who are confident." like! why was she looking at him? had they talked about this together before? he's so quick to reassure her, to make sure she's not worried. boom - we wrote a fic about it.

or in 3x03, when james is about to sneeze on the train and erin is looking at him encouragingly, hoping she'll get to hear about his "hopes and dreams," and michelle is looking between the two of them like she suspects something, like whatever is about to happen needs to be stopped. did michelle really just happen on them kissing in 3x04 or had she been watching them for a while, seeing this develop right in front of her eyes and try to interrupt it? because i think it's fun, my headcanon is the latter and it's based literally on that one look in 3x03 alone. i'm not gonna write it, but someone give me a "5 times michelle suspected" fic!

there's just so much there if you've got an eye to it, so many spaces for fun ideas. it's the way i like to write and think about fic - to find those spaces in a source material, to find those opportunities within it to really explore what else could be there and to better understand who the characters are to themselves and to each other. imo not all source material has those spaces, but derry girls has it in spades.

Due to overwhelming pressure from (1) followers, I'm going to be sharing more of my chronological star trek thoughts. I've seen maybe a dozen trek episodes across all the different shows (mostly TOS and TNG... I don't think I'd seen any Enterprise, Voyager, or DS9)... and the JJ Abrams movies. Most of what I know is from friends who are fans or gifsets on tumblr.

Typically when I work, I put something on in the background. Crit Role or music or a Movie Chain (pick a movie, pick an actor from that movie, pick a movie with that actor, repeat ad infinitum- the last one I did before Trek was 30 movies long from Pitch Perfect to Gunpowder Milkshake)... but then I decided it was taking too long to pick movies each time so why not take more of the choice out of the equation? Look at what @sniperct just said about how there's So Much Trek out right now that it could get them through the strike? Maybe... it's time.

But why watch them by release date when you can watch them chronologically? (I did hear the terrified shouts of 2 whole people when I said this before.)

Anyway, I'm near the end of season 2 of Enterprise. Surprisingly Trip has grown on me. I hate how they dress T'Pol and how she is seen as the object of attraction to like every dude on the ship. I think my list of main cast in order of how much I like their characters goes Travis, Trip, Hoshi, Reed, Phlox, T'Pol, Archer.

I still don't understand... why Archer feels the need... to add such long pauses in everything he says. It sounds like... the way people make fun... of Shatner. Was it... intentional?
