This post contains all the new information about Spamton revealed on September 17th and 18th 2022 through the Spamton Sweepstakes and the Twitter Q&A, ranging from the most important reveals to small details, in no particular order!

Spamton might be dual typed, with his two elements being Puppet and Cat. It could also be, however, that he merely meant that the Puppet and the Cat elements share the same elemental weaknesses and that his sole element is Puppet.

Spamton once considered Swatch a close friend who always listened to him and was a shoulder for him to cry on.

Spamton seems to be especially fond of the Mike person he mentions in the game, citing him as the only one he’d spare if he got revenge on all of those who he feels have wronged him and declining to give people any information about him in order to protect him from “THAT [Cathode]’S CREW”.

Spamton is aware “haters” want to inflict bodily damage onto him (especially cover him in milk and throw him against a wall) and his official stance on the subject is “[Cool down with a]!!! WHAT IF ONE DAY, YOU ENDED UP [Killed] ME!?” and “WE DON’T DO THAT WITHOUT [A 72 hour paid Appointment]!!”

Spamton met Noelle before her arrival to Cyber World through her replying to his spam e-mails (implied to be about a supposedly “friend finder” website she tried to find her sister through). She was the only one to ever reply to one of his e-mails and, in return, he sent her a code that, when input into the Cat Petterz 2 game, produced a pipis reminiscent to the Bad Egg glitch from the Pokémon games.

The Pipis Spamton sent Noelle is implied to be the only gift he ever gave someone, since he seems unable to give people goods without trading them for money, even symbolically, either because of his corruption or as a trait of his species.

Spamton is aware people find him attractive and attributes it to his “MASSIVE [Ass]”.

Spamton doesn’t know what his Spamton EX form would have looked like.

Spamton claims that first three letters of the hidden, garbled lyrics hidden in BIG SHOT and as a voice line in the Spamton plush are “F I N”.

Spamton recognizes that his speech contains “[Brackets]“ and “[Random sp4m quotes]” to someone who’s looking at it in text form.

Spamton can repeat pieces of phrases he reads or is told, something he does in four different occasions between the Sweepstakes and the Q&A, which implies some of the things he says might be fully copied and pasted together from other sources.

Spamton claims his favorite food is Mexican food, but very specifically from the Pipis “The Original” restaurant, which is a reference present in the original game.

When answering this particular question, he answered it by repeating phrases taken directly from the restaurant’s Facebook page almost word for word.

Spamton might know about Jockington and thinks he’d disapprove of his “Pipis Big Shot Fantasyship Ring” product, maybe because Pipis isn’t a real sport.

Spamton is in a certain amount of denial about his downfall.

I love your art!! I really admire your work and I love your deltarune fanart, especially how you draw noelle :) whenever I look at your art I always feel like you have such a firm grasp on anatomy and all your drawings feel like they really exist in 3d space, and i love how the characters in your drawings are shaped :0 do you have any tips for a learning artist?

well gosh, after you buttering me up like that, how can i refuse? (jk but in all serious, thank you so much this is SO sweet) anyway, let's see, tips..... (this ended up turning into a whole tutorial lmao)

so one thing you'll hear a lot of artists say is to start with a warm up first, but not a lot about what "warming up" actually means. some people take that to mean they have to start with a whole other drawing, personally i find that takes away too much energy and i end up spending way more time on it than i want to. i like doodling little cubes and cylinders, but if i have something to color sometimes i just do that to warm up. whatever works for you best, just anything to get your hand used to the motion of drawing.

for starting the actual drawing it really is important to begin with a line of action. think of it as a basic guideline for how you want to pose a character. it will help the pose flow better, trust me. (im going to draw noelle bc obviously im pretty used to that)

some artists start with just the line, i like to do the guide for the head first and then the line, whatever

you dont absolutely have to follow the line for your pose btw its just good to have an idea of what youre doing before you do it

after that is when you start worrying about shapes, usually. an important thing to remember when drawing is that absolutely everything is made of shapes, first and foremost. humans, animals, objects, drawing anything starts with shapes. circles squares and triangles. this goes for drawing from life too! it's why you want to start with a light pencil or a sketch layer cuz this is the stuff youre gonna erase later, but it's essentially the skeleton of your drawing

btw, i give noelle a very basic "average thin teenage girl" figure but it's good to practice other body types too and learn what shapes work best for drawing those

you mightve heard the advice to "draw the person nude first and then draw the clothes on top of them" and that's only partially true- it's good to know what the shape of the body is before you dive in with the clothes but you dont have to do like, a whole nude model first. you just need enough to understand how the fabric is going to fall on the body

also, and this is sort of off-topic, but when it comes to clothes its good to understand how different fabric works and how it's going to react to a body underneath it. some fabric clings, some is very loose, some is thin and some is thick. basically what im saying is that you dont have to shrink-wrap the clothing to the body, especially when it comes to a character with breasts or anything else that sticks out. thats a mistake a lot of beginner artists make. in this case, noelle's robe is very loose but i still want it to conform to her body a little bit so the pose isn't totally lost

aaaaand there ya go! after all that is when im ready to actually draw the dang thing. you can tell if you look close that i didnt totally follow the guidelines i made for myself, and that's okay. for example i tend to almost always draw the head too small and then have to enlarge it afterwards. one of the perks of being a digital artist is i can make mistakes and not have to re-do the whole drawing to fix them.

one other thing as to how to get better at actually drawing the body right in the first place- FIGURE DRAWING! as cliche as it might sound it really helps. it's best to draw from life, but if you can't get into a class for it there are plenty of websites out there with good photography of nude models. i also reference a lot of my poses from those websites, or sometimes from videos of figure skating or ballet if i think the situation calls for it.

this is a good website for figure drawing practice- it lets you set a timer so you can practice getting a pose down quickly or spend a lot of time on one model, your choice

also, yknow, always make sure you're having fun and dont stress out too much about whether what youre drawing looks good. the more you draw, the better, and don't think you have to post everything to social media if you dont want to. draw for yourself first and foremost and observe from life and artists you admire what you WANT to draw and want to get better at, and what looks like fun. that's the most important part

Summary: Valeria made it through her wedding and now is enjoying her reception with her dearest friend and maid of honor. [Solus x Empress, continuation of Prompt 6. Not necessary to read the first part, but adds some context.]

Valeria, despite having stayed at the palace for over a month, gazed upon the lavishly decorated ball room with wonder that almost had her tripping over her own feet. Soft lights at the edges of the room were almost completely drowned out by the bright lights of the brilliant chandeliers above. What are surely very expensive fabrics draped over what felt like endless tables laden with fulsome plates of food, many of which were traditional Garlean dishes, though some were foreign foods Valeria had never seen before. A large, open area in the middle of the room made up a dance floor, a small stage set out of the way for the quartet to play for the evening.

It was more than Valeria would have ever dreamed for herself, and she still wasn’t sure that this wasn’t all some dream. Perhaps she’d been in some accident and was trapped in a deep slumber, but if she was, it was certainly an improvement and so she didn’t complain. She spotted Noelle taking her place at one table, clearly uncomfortable with attending as a guest and not a servant, but settling well enough to shoot Valeria a smile and a thumbs-up from across the room.

There was dining and speech making and, honestly, Valeria was so overwhelmed it all kind of passed in a blur until everything settled down and people started wandering from their seats to speak and dance. Despite clinging to her new husband like she was afraid of getting lost in the crowd if she let go, they ended up swept away by various groups. Ambitious military types were seizing their chance to pick Solus’ brain and try to get into his favor while the rich, the noble, and the social climbers approached without cease to interrogate Valeria — who was she, where did she come from, how did they meet, and other such questions that carried the undercurrent of looking for leverage against the new Empress.

Perhaps Noelle could see that Valeria was drowning in conversation, or perhaps she just wanted to talk to the only person that didn’t look down on her, because the tiny hyur approached and chased away the high class Garleans harassing Valeria and took up a spot next to her, handing her a glass of wine.

“Gods, they’re persistent,” Noelle grumbled, glancing none too subtly at the more desperate to grasp for favor lingering nearby. “How are you holding up?”

“Honestly, pushy nobles aside, this is the easy part,” Valeria took a sip of her drink. “The food’s good, the drink is better, and the decorations are beautiful.” Noelle grinned widely; she’d picked most of the decor and food, Valeria having deferred to her taste when overwhelmed by choice.

“So…” Noelle’s face turned mischievous. “Feeling less nervous about tonight, then?” Valeria choked on her wine, though she knew she should have known that, now that she didn’t need to get her down the aisle in one piece, Noelle would bring back their former discussion.

“Could you…not? I was kinda hoping to just forget about those particular nerves,” Valeria blotted stray wine from her face, though there was no wiping away the way her face reddened.

“What, and then have to deal with all of them on the spot? I’m doing you a favor,” Noelle gave the most innocent expression she could muster, and Valeria rolled her eyes.

“I don’t think ‘thinking about it’ is going to make it better later,” she turned the glass in her hands, watching the wine gently slosh around inside. “It just…it is what it is. It’s my new job, after all, to make an heir happen, so—“

“Val, that is such a bad way to look at this,” Noelle sighed. “Just make yourself a list of your concerns and talk to him about it. I hear good communication is important for marriages— Your Radiance!” Noelle suddenly dropped into a low curtsy, Valeria turning her head to see Solus approaching, reaching one hand towards her.

“Shall we dance?” he asked, and she couldn’t contain her (only a little bashful) smile as she took his hand and let him lead her to the dance floor, Noelle deftly snagging her wine out of her hand before Valeria could forget about it and spill the wine.

“You looked like you needed rescuing,” he gently teased as they slowly spun across the floor. “What were you talking about?”

“Oh, n-nothing!” Valeria felt her cheeks warm, knowing she wasn’t fooling anyone, least of all her husband. “Just…um…girl things.”

“’Girl things’?” Solus raised an eyebrow at her, smirking in amusement. Valeria gulped.

“I’ll…tell you later?”

“As you wish.”

Protagonists (the two duos that the story switches back and forth to)

Isaac (last name is secretly Drakul) a vampire! (Vampires happen when you drink dragons blood. This involves a craving of flesh and blood, sensitivity to sunlight, slit pupils. Patches of scales, tiny horns and a tiny tail, and sharp retractable claws) he was forcefully turned into a vampire at 7 years old but his mind just blanks when he tries to remember it, like a black hole in his head. As of the story, he’s 26. He’s 6’2 and a himbo in denial. He’s rather reserved and quiet, a consequence of being raised by an abusive noble family. Most vampires are of noble blood and are rarely seen in public. Isaac ran from home at 20, where, after he got his stuff stolen and started crying in an alley, met his future partner in crime/murder soulmate/whatever the fuck they’ve got going on…

Alice Wonder (Absolutely not her real name): An Oceanid (one of dozens of types mystical fae that arent nearly as cool as they used to be). She possesses the forgotten, thought to be dead magic of song, descended from the now extinct Sirenids. She was from a moderately poor family, and stole here and there to support her sickly parents. Eventually, a wealthy man offered her hand in marriage and to take her out of poverty. This man was a scientist with a license in weather magic. She eventually grew attatched, but he used that to take advantage of her. He mutilated and experimented on her, unlocking her power of song. She was heavily scarred on half of her body, branded with various magic seals that didn’t work. She eventually killed him, and like Isaac, her years of torture feel like a black hole in her head. She got out, found out the Novald Police force killed her parents since they were killing off those with the Shade Plague (which was turbing people into violent smoke ghost). Alice then became the Sadistic mass murdering Jessica Rabbit knockoff that’s loved by the crime world of Novald. Once the story starts, she’s 28, and around 5’7. She’s extremely snarky, but has freakishly good charisma. When she was 22, a year after killing her abuser, she walked home after a thrilling night of collecting bounties and singing people into killing each other. On her way, she bumped into a vampire bawling his eyes out in a filthy alley.She offers him a hand, advising that life will only get worse if all he does is cry about it. Now they’re unstoppable, and I can’t define what they’re relationship is for the life of me.

Now to the next duo

Detective Noelle: A private detective that works closely with the N.P.F (Novald Police Force). She, like most of the police in Novald, have Talons (Chains with eagle claws with a lightning seal, basically works like a taser) and doesn’t seem to realize how utterly fucked up and borderline cultish the NPF is. She tries to do good, but that blinds her to the fact that she’s supporting a horrible group under the guise of delivering justice. She wants to be a good person and help people, but she’s in denial about being just like the rest of the NPF, and doesn’t acknowledge that she has to actually change her principles. She’s calm, but gets confrontational very easily, she tries to keep up the facade of politeness and respect that cracks very easily. She kind of sucks, but not as much as her partner.

Detective Alexios: A head detective at the NPF and engaged to Noelle. He seems stoic, but is pretty much lifeless in how he speaks and acts. He rarely tries to listen or spend time with Noelle, and that’s because he doesn’t see her as anything other than a meat shield or assistant. He saw constant death wherever he looked while growing up in the lower levels of Novald, which lead to him rarely connecting to anyone. He can be quiet sadistic on the job while still sticking to the whole “dead inside” bit. He’s even planned to become director of the NPF, wanting to crush the criminal underworld of Novald, which the police force only empower and enable. Crime is pretty much the only way to live in Novald if you aren’t born into wealth. So Alexios sucks even worse than Noelle.

and that’s our protagonists! All four of them are horrible, but Alice and Isaac are actually having fun with it. We’ve got partners in crime (murder soulmates edition) and partners in crime (the U.S police force edition) if you couldn’t tell this story has an ACAB metaphor already.

Answers & Headcanons Below the Cut [because this post got a bit lengthy]

(Warnings: Contains Spoilers for and through the Spade Arc)

2. When I think I truly started to like them (or dislike them, if you've sent me a character I don't like)

I think my perception of Nozel really began to change in the Elf Arc during the battle at Silva Castle. We learned so much about Nozel's deeper motivations and saw that he did actually care for Noelle and wanted to protect her (he just went about it in the absolute worst way possible), and he does admit he was wrong about Noelle and her abilities and actually apologizes to her there which helped paint him in a more sympathetic light to me.

All that said, I think it was really in the Spade Arc when we learn even more about why Nozel acted the way he did--that on a certain level he was really almost forced into this more antagonistic role because he literally couldn't explain that Noelle wasn't responsible for Acier's death due to the curse. Suddenly, in my mind, I have this incredibly vivid and heartbreaking mental of Young Nozel a literal child forced to carry the weight of the world alone. Not only has he lost his mother but he has also been quite literally cursed with such a heavy burden. The pain and the loneliness of that has to be unbearable for even an adult, but Nozel was only a teenager. And I think when looking at the situation from that kind of perspective, it's easy to have a lot more sympathy for him. Yes, he didn't handle the situation as well as he could have especially with Noelle, but I just started thinking to myself: would I have been able to do much better under those circumstances at only 14 years old? Would anyone, honestly? And that isn't to excuse away what he did, especially when he got older, but it does make him more sympathetic to me and I feel genuinely bad for how much he suffered and wish him good things and a reconciliation with his sister going forward.

4. How many people I ship them with

This is a very difficult question for me to answer, honestly, because I am much more invested in Nozel rebuilding his relationship with his sister, Noelle, than in any potential romantic relationship he could have. My personal view of shipping in general is as more of an actively wishing or wanting certain characters to get together with other characters, and in this particular case I'm not sure I am actively wishing for Nozel to end up with anyone in particular. There are certainly a handful of ships I like or would be okay with for him (Nozel x Dorothy and Nozel x Vanessa come to mind off the top of my head, and I also like several Nozel x OC ships created by some talented writers and artists in the fandom). Ultimately, however, I think in my mind, Nozel just has so much internal turmoil and a lot of things he personally needs to work through before I can see him really getting into a relationship with anyone (and, honestly, on some level, before I can see him even wanting to get into a relationship--but that's just my personal interpretation) so I really think I am actively wishing for him to take time to heal and to work on himself more than I am actively wishing for him to find love, if that makes sense?

If I had to put a number on it...um...I guess, since I'm not really set on any particular ship for Nozel, I'd honestly say the possibilities are kind of endless. I'd really like to see him marry for love someday, but my more practical side thinks he has probably already been betrothed to somebody and he's not really the type who'd break that kind of commitment even if he wanted to. But who knows?

7. A quote of them that you remember

I remember just my jaw dropping in this moment. (I watched the anime first, but it was also an important moment in the manga). It was such a big thing for Noelle to have her brother finally show he believed in her and suggest they fight together side-by-side. Another that comes to mind is his entire little speech at the end of the battle where he reveals to Noelle his reasons for treating her coldly were that he was trying to deter her from joining the Magic Knights and he admits that he was wrong about her and that he's sorry. It was the first step in repairing their broken sibling relationship, and though they still have a lot of work to do to see Nozel actually admit he was in the wrong and apologize for that was a big step in the right direction.

14. Best storyline they had

As of writing this, Nozel's arc in Spade and his battle versus Megicula, but we'll see if this changes with whatever Tabata has in store for him in the final arc.

18. How do you think they were as a kid? (Like, were they shy, noisy, wild, etc)

Nozel was always an old soul--wise beyond his years, quiet, serious, and responsible. He worked hard and studied conscientiously, and he very rarely got into trouble. If anything was a bit of a stick in the mud when it came to more imaginative, raucous, and childish games, and I imagine Acier often had to encourage him to stop working so hard and have fun every once and a while so he'd remember to actually be a kid while he was still young.

19. The most random ship you've seen people have with them

To start with a disclaimer: I actually like this ship, but I think I'd have to admit that Nozel x Vanessa is pretty random to me seeing as they haven't ever really interacted in the canon and I honestly would have never thought of it as a pairing if I hadn't seen it in the fandom. I think imagining the potential of it and what it could be like is part of the fun of that particular ship, but I'd classify it as random even if I feel positively about it.

27. If they could meet a character from another show/movie/etc, who would be the most fun for them to meet?

So for a very silly answer, I'm going to say Rui from Demon Slayer just because my sister and I have this running inside joke that he's basically a Nozessa love child since he has this thick, angular silvery-white hair like Nozel and a thread-based magical ability (blood demon art) similar to Vanessa's magic (Rui also has an attack called "Murderous Eye Basket" that looks very similar to Nozel's "Silver Star of Execution"). He is a villain though, so I guess you'd have to ignore that... 😅😂 Still I could see Rui wanting to adopt Nozel into his "Spider Family" and Nozel just having no patience for these kinds of shenanigans which could be a fun mashup. (I also wouldn't mind watching these two battle too, so either way, I think it might be an interesting meeting).

i think anthony would really understand mental illness. after his fathers death, and the treatment from his mother, as well as the new pressures of becoming the lord of the family, he’d have so many new burdens. there’d be moments where he felt like he was drowning, unable to pull himself up to the surface. but you’d always be there to pull him back up, and he’s of course do the same for you.

maybe one day, either you or him weren’t having a great day. but there was a ball that evening, and you both begrudgingly got dressed. that night, you’d head downstairs in your finest to see there was no carriage awaiting you.

“anthony?” you’d call, and he’d waltz in from the back door. “where’s the carriage?”

he’d grin, holding out his hand for you. “we’re not going.”

“what? your mother will be furious, you know we’re expected to be there. for eloise at the very least, we can’t leave her there alone.”

“mother is more than capable of chaperoning,” he’d say, pulling you into the backyard. “and if not, benedict is there as well. i think they can survive one night without us, don’t you think?”

you’d sigh, letting him pull you. “and what are we to do tonight, then?”

“other things…” he’d grin, kicking of his shoes. you’d fall his lead, kicking off your heels.

hand in hand, you’d run through the gardens, laughing as you traipsed through the flowers. he’d huff as he chased you, laughing until he couldn’t breathe. he’d sit down on the swing, looking up at you with a toothy grin.

“push me, darling.”

you’d laugh, rolling your eyes. “as you wish, my lord. as you wish.”

I am thinking so hard about ticklish Finral rn I can’t stand it I love him so much

*slams hands on desk* YES! Oh my goodness ticklish Finral is a godsend!

Right off the bat? He's the type to have that Pillsbury dough boy laugh and reaction to getting poked in the belly! Vanessa especially loves to do it- just a quick jab and he's doubled over and giggling like a child, twisting away at each poke. Sometimes he goes in circles helicopter helicopter

Sometimes when he makes portals he gets stuck- not because they're too small but rather someone *coughMagmacough* will grab him and keep him there while someone else *coughLuckcough* Will squeeze his sides and hips until he's shrieking and dying of laughter. Whomever's on the opposite side is usually left in confused amusement at why he was suddenly a laughing mess.

Oo, you know what? He'd have really ticklish neck and ears too. Don't ask me why- he just would. Stray hair out of place? Vanessa's already over there smoothing it back for him while sneaking a few tickles in. Is he flirting with the ladies again? Yami will pick him up by the back of his neck just gently enough that it tickles like crazy while he drags him away. And because I'm such a Zora x Finral shipper; neck and ear kisses from the older man because they are deserved.

Cheer up tickles because Finral deserves them. Especially once we learn more of his backstory and just his overall insecurity in himself and his place at the Black Bulls. He even sighs sadlike? The gang is upon him. He's simply not aloud to feel depressed for long around his team- they will make him smile and laugh forever.

He has only one person he'd ever beat in a tickle fight and that is Asta- but mainly because Asta is the most ticklish Bull and literally anyone can defeat him (even Noelle and her lack of real tickling experience). Still- if he's not careful Asta will pull his "Smol but strong" move in which he picks up Finral, tosses him over his shoulder, and tickles his thighs and legs like no one's business. Sometimes they fall on the floor. It's a disaster but in the best way.

Characters: Noelle, Nozel and Finral

Synopsis: Noelle prepares to go visit home, and has a discussion about Nozel with Finral

Genre: General, with an angsty mood, but a fluffy (?) ending

Fanfic type: Oneshot

Noelle was packing to visit home in the Royal Capitol. She wasn’t planning on staying for long, but it felt like something she both needed, and wanted, to do. It was strange, a thought that amused her at times. Because she could never have imagined that spending so much time apart of her siblings, would have made her grow closer to them.

Though, of course, it wasn’t just the fact that they had spent more time apart. It was also the fact that she, and they all, had discovered things about their mother and the whole tragedy that had plagued their family. Or, rather that Nozel-oniisama was finally able to tell things that he previously had been unable to speak out due to the curse. They were finally able to talk it through and move on, which they had begun to do. Even if they were still in the early stages of healing as a family, it was all progress.

Baby steps.

Not that they, Nozel especially, had ever been… talkative. Even Nebra couldn’t recall Nozel ever being good with his words. By which she had meant that Nozel was able to speak out official, captain and royal lingo, when need be, but when it came to elaborating or explaining something more personal, he always had a look of… being lost.

A quiet giggle passed Noelle as she thought about it. Because that was very much Nozel-oniisama. He was a stoic person. But it didn’t mean that he wouldn’t have had thoughts and feelings.

If she was perfectly honest, she didn’t always know how to voice her emotions either. And she supposed that everyone struggled with it at times. But Nozel was particularly… he could use a lot of improvement.

“Ready to go?” Finral asked, having emerged to the doorway.

“Yeah,” she replied with a nod.

There was a pause, during which Noelle waited for Finral to open a portal, and Finral… he thought about how to ask a question that was in his mind. Or rather if he should ask it.

“How long are you staying?”

“Four days.”

His eyes averted for a moment, but the moment ended with him humming out something that sounded like an agreement.

“What is it?” She asked with a slight frown.

“Nothing, don’t worry about it,” he insisted waving his hands in front of himself.

But it only made her frown intensify.

And Finral knew, that she wasn’t going to just let it go. “I hope you’ll be okay, and it’ll be a nice visit.” There was a smile accompanying the statement; it all wrapping into a veil of melancholy, because he understood how it could be, living in a household so devoid of love. But still, it didn’t mean that they wouldn’t have cared for their siblings.

She wasn’t sure how to reply to him. “We’re growing closer,” she still said, meaning it.

He nodded, still hesitating if he should continue. But. He did. “Nozel-sama seems… strict, and withdrawn, but… I hope you… I hope you’re able to talk things through.”

She averted her eyes, knowing that it wasn’t exactly easy between Finral and Langris after what had happened during the elf-invasion and all that it entailed. But. They, too, were trying to work things out, little by little.

“Nozel-oniisama is… withdrawn,” she replied with a frown that came from thinking about what she was going to say. “Yami said that he’s cold, and… I guess in a way he is,” she was being honest, much more so than she had intended. But perhaps it was all things she was supposed to get out. “But he has always been… distant, so it’d be strange if he was something else all of a sudden. Because Nozel-oniisama is Nozel-oniisama.” Her eyes turned back to Finral with the words that sounded too much like something Asta would say.

But. That, too, was true.

Nozel was who he was, and he was trying to be a better version of himself. And… there was a kind of security, and dare she say warmth, in his coldness. She knew what to expect being portrayed out from him. And she knew that he cared for her, for all of their siblings. He was cold, but it was a kind of warm coldness in him.

For the character bingo thing, King, Queen and Lancer

All right, I'll just do these one at a time:

So first off...King. I'm going to keep this short because I could honestly go on a full rant about this...King is critically underrated and misunderstood by the MAJORITY of the Deltarune community, NOT all. I see a fair amount of folks actively dislike King or even outright despise him, which I don't really understand. King's not the best character morally, but he's not the worst character Toby Fox has created either. There's likely a lot more to him than we currently know. There's also a few people who misdraw King, such as presenting the blue part of his face as being a hood, suggesting the spade part of his face is mask of sorts, drawing King as if he has fur, etc. From what I can tell, this sort of thing isn't as extreme or common with King as it is with another certain character, but I'll get to him later. That explains most of the Bingo squares I put x's in. And the ships involving King don't...make sense. I'm not trying to condemn anyone who ships King with other characters, as it's a major part of the UT/DR community and there's no rule stopping anyone from doing so. But from a logical, game-presenting perspective, I see no ship that makes any sense at all. That, and I don't ship characters together, so I'm more inclined to reject shipping as a whole. This explains the last couple squares I filled in.

Boy, this is likely going to ignite some flames...I'm not a major fan of Queen. It's not that she's a bad character. I do find some aspects of Queen fairly unique and interesting, such as her dialogue and her protectiveness of Noelle. But I never felt interested in her. I never wanted to sit down and go into brainstorming mode regarding her. In my opinion, she's overrated and is in Chapter 2 too much. She also seemed a lot less...threatening as a villain. She never intimidated me at all, whereas King did. There's just wasted potential with her. Yeah, my opinions about Queen are likely very controversial compared to what others think. I don't have anything else to say about her, so...next!

WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT WE HAVE A BINGO! Where to begin...Lancer is my all-time favorite Deltarune character, hands-down. I love every single thing about him. There is nothing wrong with him whatsoever. He has never done a single bad thing, ever. The one issue I have with him lies within the Deltarune community...again, not every single person does this, but like King, people often depict Lancer as...not being the character he actually is. Some misrepresent his appearance. Some examples would be the same examples I used for King. This...drives me bonkers. I can't stand it. And there are apparently some people who even ship Lancer with other characters...I LITERALLY did not know about this until a friend of mine told me. Just...why? Lancer's a CHILD...probably ten years old maximum. Shipping him with other characters is not right at all...and THEN there are some people who depict Lancer as being younger than he seems to be, like toddler age. I'm pretty sure Lancer's not a toddler...he displays awareness, intelligence, and emotions a toddler does not possess. Anyway, Lancer rules, best Deltarune character ever, the end. I'm highly considering writing a similar essay with Lancer like the one I did for King, because I could go on about this bouncy little pumpkin for ages. But I'll leave it here for now.

Keep in mind that this is all my opinion...you have every right to have a different opinion. That's part of why so many different types of characters exist in the Deltarune universe...there are characters who suit everyone.

"I'm just asking a question, you know." Noelle says as she opens her locker. "You're acting like I've done something wrong or something." She sighs after Berdly keeps up with the 'look at me' act.

Berdly rolls his eyes. "Whatever. If you don't want my opinion then don't ask for it." He replies smugly as he walks away.

Noelle grits her teeth and shakes her head. She shuts her locker and turns around to face him again.

"That wasn't nice! You're being a jerk!" Noelle yells, but Berdly continues walking away.

She huffs and slumps against her locker. Why do people have to be so mean?

Noelle looks down at the ground and tries to calm herself before going back to class. Berdly is one of the few students that she knows. In fact, she only has a handful of friends, including Kris and Susie. The three of them are all very close and hang out together whenever they can. Noelle is definitely the quietest of the group, but she does her fair share of helping out.

Right now, she's supposed to be getting her books for English class, but she's having a hard time focusing. She keeps thinking about what happened with Berdly earlier.

Is he just trying to get under my skin or is he serious? He seems pretty sure that I did something wrong, but I honestly don't see how. And if he thinks that I'm a bad person... then why is he still hanging out with me?

Noelle sighs and puts her book bag away. She'll deal with Berdly later. Right now, she needs to focus on her classes and not let anything upset her too much.

In spite of her efforts, Noelle finds herself shaking off and on throughout the day. She keeps thinking about Berdly, and it's just making her feel worse. It's almost like he's right about her. She's a weirdo who doesn't deserve to be here.

The thought sends chills down her spine. What if someone else starts to think that way? Will they all start treating me differently? If they do, will I be able to keep myself together? How long until I crack?

Noelle glances over at Berdly during lunch. He's sitting by himself, eating a burger and fries while reading the new issue of Teen Vogue. Noelle wants to go up to him and ask what he's thinking about, but she feels intimidated by him. He looks intimidating, and he probably wouldn't understand anyway. Even though he's a jerk, no one likes to believe that people dislike them because they're rude and inconsiderate.

Berdly notices her staring at him and glances over. His eyes narrow and he gives her a glare. Noelle immediately looks away, embarrassed and nervous.

"What?" Berdly asks suspiciously as he looks back down at his magazine.

Noelle blushes and takes a bite from her sandwich. "Nothing," she replies.

Berdly ignores her and goes back to reading his magazine. Noelle feels her cheeks burning and she can barely look at him anymore.

He's probably right. I am acting weird. Maybe I shouldn't have asked him about anything.

The bell rings and Berdly stands up, throwing his trash into the garbage can. "See ya later." He says, giving her a small wave as he leaves.

Noelle watches Berdly leave and sighs. She looks down at her hands and frowns.

Toriel and Asgore don’t want Lo around because she has powers or can take care of the house, they want her around because she’s a kind person who genuinely cares about their children and they think of her like a daughter.   Toriel is always so excited when Lo comes to cook with her and Asgore loves giving Lo big hugs simply because she “looked like she needed one”.   they love her.

Kris doesn’t want Lo around because she’s ‘everything’ for them, they want her around because they can relate to her and they think she’s a great person and this little corner of the world is brighter because she’s here.   they don’t just care when they’re exchanging food wars, they also love it when the two of them are sitting at some bar drunk at 3 in the morning crying to each other about everything.   they love her.

Chara doesn’t want Lo around because she’s strong or is able to ‘handle’ them when they’re being difficult, they want her around because she’s one of the few adults who’s respected them and they like being able to make her proud of them.   they couldn’t care less that she can lift the couch with one hand and vacuum under it with the other, they just like being able to trust someone new and think that maybe their presence actually does make someone happy.   they love her.

Frisk doesn’t want Lo around because she’s a super cool hero or because she’s able to make plans to manage their energy, they want her around because she’s one of the few people who doesn’t think they’re ‘too much’ and they can’t wait to exchange kisses when they see her and they get to ask her about her day.   who cares that she saved the world yesterday ??   not them !   (ok, well, maybe they do a little bit because that’s awesome.)   they just like hugging her whenever something is wrong with either of them, they know it won’t fix things but it’s still kind of nice.   they love her.

Asriel doesn’t want Lo around because she cooks for them or because she takes them to fun places a lot, he wants her around because he can feel how much she loves them all when she hugs them and she doesn’t think there’s anything ‘wrong’ with him because he’s a crybaby and she doesn’t leave the bedroom until she knows he’s asleep.   if she lost all her powers tomorrow and lost the ability to cook and was too tired to go to the park, it wouldn’t matter to him, he’s just glad she’s there.   he loves her.

hell.   even Flowey has not-completely-selfish motives for wanting her around.   he’s a little fucking bastard, but he still loves her.

Susie and Ralsei and Noelle and Berdly love her too, even if they’re all a bit distant simply because of the fact that (barring Susie who is incredibly obnoxious) they don’t want to presume she wants to hang out with them or don’t want to invite themselves along to places or it just never crosses their mind that she might enjoy their company.

I mean.   of course friends and family don’t ‘fix’ anything.   love doesn’t ‘fix’ anything.   it’s not going to cure her depression and water her crops and make her the physically-and-mentally-healthiest person in the world.

but even though love isn’t going to “fix” what’s making her hurt ... at the same time, I don’t think she truly realizes how much love she’s actually got, and how much of it is genuine love rather than admiration or idealization like she might think it is.

all these people sincerely love her, very much.   for who she is, not what she is and not what she can do.

if (or actually when) they all tell her that, if it all somehow clicks into place, I just ... wonder if that might make her feel some type of way.   you know ?   =)

Deltarune: Whose Choices Matter? (major spoilers for all routes)

I'm so extremely sure others have discussed this to death already, but I'm obsessed with the themes of "choice" in Deltarune. What's really stuck in my head are these three things:

1. At the start, you, the player, are told no one can choose who they are in this world and that your choices don't matter. The character you make gets thrown away.

2. Pretty much the second you're in the dark world, Ralsei starts telling Kris that their "choices are important too."

3. Toby has said many times that there is "only one ending" and, in one interview, that there's "something more important than reaching the end."

Lots of people have said that Toby was lying since there obviously are differences in both chapters depending on the choices you make. But I don't think that's true. Toby's the type to use clever wording to tell half-truths, but not straight up lie.

It's technically true that there's just one ending. No matter what the player does, the king still ends up in jail. Queen still stops her plan and joins you. Kris still opens up another dark foundation.

The changes in each playthrough are only indirectly the result of the player's actions. They are instead direct results of how the characters treat Kris and each other because of how you acted. Your actions don't matter and can't effect how the story plays out in and of themselves. But because all the key moments - the pillars, Ralsei revealing the story of the Roaring, etc - hinge on the characters' actions, their choices are the ones that matter and the ending is always more or less the same. This theme of choice and the effect of your actions on others is central to pretty much every "changeable" part of the story.

Let me provide some examples.

1. Minor Details

If you toss away the manual Ralsei gives you in chapter 1, he'll put a trashcan in Kris' room instead of a stand for the manual.

This is a really small, pretty insignificant detail. It doesn't affect the story. I personally never touched the manual again even though I kept it. If you toss it, Ralsei still gives Kris/the player tips on how to play. But Toby still programmed it in. He programmed Ralsei to notice you threw away something he worked on, and to treat you differently as a result. Maybe just as a joke, sure. But there's many other instances of characters remembering your actions and treating you accordingly.

Another example: If you step off one of the first electric wall switches before Noelle is done crossing to the other side to stand on the other button, she scolds you and then pulls the same prank on you. Kris looks hurt in response - because they're getting punished for something you did. It's a lot harder to brush this one off as just a joke when it ends with someone feeling hurt.

2. Kris' Dialogue

The player chooses a lot of dialogue for Kris. But sometimes Kris speaks on their own or chooses how they say what they're told by the player to say.

After the Spamton NEO fight, if you choose to tell Susie you're okay, Susie will think about how Kris is speaking hoarsely, and so she thinks Kris probably isn't okay. If you choose to say you're not okay, Ralsei says Kris is yelling. No matter what option you choose, Kris chooses to do their best to communicate that they are definitely not okay. It's Kris' choice here that matters and effects how the characters react, not yours.

3. Recruiting

Chapter 2 hammers in the idea that sparing enemies is important by introducing the recruiting mechanic. But recruiting doesn't seem to actually do much yet, aside from giving you some extra dialogue and dojo challenges.

At one point, there's some tutorial text from Ralsei that mentions how from now on, fighting an enemy instead of sparing it will make it unable to be recruited. Then it specifically mentions that there might be times where breaking bonds will make you stronger. There was something like this in chapter 1, too, where Ralsei seems to realize after fighting the king that the party can't always spare everyone.

This is in pretty stark contrast to Undertale, where the fight/spare mechanic basically meant choosing between life and death for any character. The character you're fighting doesn't get any say in the matter in Undertale. In Deltarune, you (or, more accurately, Kris) don't have the power to kill someone. You can only beat them up badly enough that they choose not to join you. At some point in the later chapters, making someone not want to join you might be a better decision.

4. Berdly

If you just focus on the Queen, Berdly tries to remove it himself, damaging his arm in the process. When he wakes up in the light world later, he still can't move his arm.

In the first battle with Queen, Berdly is attached to one of her plugs. You can loosen it to free him, like you did with the Werepires.

You didn't hurt Berdly. But if you choose to ignore him to focus on finishing the fight instead, his own actions in response cause him to be hurt anyway.

5. Snowgrave

Kris doesn't seem to have the ability to kill. Neither does Susie or Ralsei.

But Noelle does.

It's important to note that the player doesn't have complete control over anyone in the party except Kris. At the start of chapter 1, Susie makes her own choices in battle. Even in chapter 2, you can't take equipment off her unless you're swapping in something else (she tells you "Hands off!" if you try). The characters can just straight up refuse to follow your/Kris' orders if they want.

If you command Noelle to brute force puzzles, to "get" the ring, to ice all the Darkners, she gets used to hurting others to feel stronger. Then she can use Snowgrave - the only action that specifies it is lethal - in the fight with Berdly. When you tell Noelle to use Snowgrave, she refuses several times. She even tells you that she "doesn't know a spell called Snowgrave" to get you to stop. If you keep badgering her, she finally snaps, and chooses to cast it.

The wildest part about the Snowgrave route, in my opinion, is that there doesn't even seem to be any reward for doing it. In Undertale, the whole appeal of the No Mercy route was the epic boss fights that couldn't be played on any other route. The reward was the challenge. In Snowgrave, you skip almost half of the story and multiple boss fights. And for what? A slightly harder version of a boss you can also fight on any other run?

You can manipulate Noelle into making a terrible choice and presumably killing Berdly, seemingly just for the hell of it. After you return to the light world, the only things that change in the story are that Berdly doesn't wake up and Noelle is scared out of her mind if she sees you wearing her watch. Susie still walks you home. Toriel still asks Susie to stay over. Kris still slashes the tires on Toriel's car and opens a new foundation. Nothing major changes.

All Snowgrave seems to do is get you to the same ending faster.

Deltarune is about choices, sure. But more accurately, it's about how your choices affect the people around you, and how that informs their choices, and so on.

So, what's more important than reaching the end? It's how you - and the characters - chose to get there. It's about the journey, not the destination.

Why is Weird Route so Weird? (DeltaRune spoilers)

So here’s my thoughts on why Chapter 2's Weird / Snowgrave route exists (on a meta level) and why it in some ways feels even more upsetting than UT’s equivalent. Spoilers under the cut, obviously.

(For those who don't know what this route is, here's the breakdown. Yes it's all real, I've played through it myself.)

In UnderTale, there are little hints that suggest the player isn't Frisk, or Chara. Post-paci, Flowey tells you to let Frisk live their life. At the end of No Mercy run, Chara speaks to you, asking why you want to bring back the world after *you* destroyed it, and, if it's your second run of this type, why you'd then destroy it again. "I cannot understand these feelings anymore."

DeltaRune seems to be taking this idea of the player being a separate entity from the character you control and expanding it by making it the focus of Kris's story. Noelle at the end of Weird Route, in fact, makes it very clear that the voice Kris used to command her to do bad things didn't sound like their voice at all.

That's not my main point here, though. My main point is that, where DR as a whole is expanding on that aspect of UT, giving a different perspective that more so focuses on the horror of being controlled by an outside entity, and which clarifies that the human being controlled in these games is, in fact, their own person...

The Weird route is an expansion and alternate perspective on the No Mercy route, highlighting an aspect of it that many fans - Chara demonizers in particular - seem to miss: the corrupting effect we have on the character being controlled.

In UT's No Mercy route, we see Frisk/Chara become more aggressive, we hear from other characters that they're emoting even less than usual, and the narration becomes much more cynical, dry, and focused on the task at hand. We are teaching Chara that they were brought back for power's sake, that it has been kill or be killed all along, and that there's nothing in this world worth saving.

However, the route's focus is generally more on the destruction and hurt you're causing to the Underground. Frisk as a presence basically disappears, and Chara doesn't confront you about what you've done to them until the end - and by that point, they're fully on your side (as long as you agree to finish what you started). The main source of horror and angst is seeing the towns empty, the monsters' responses to this ongoing tragedy, their futile attempts to stop you, the "but nobody came"s. Hell, you literally get a counter for how many monsters you have left to kill in each area.

It's different in DeltaRune's Weird Route. There's still some of that brand of angst; enemies running away from you after a certain point, and their frozen bodies remaining on the map. But you're never made to kill any characters you're attached to in the same way as UT's bosses (unless you're a big Berdly fan, I guess, and that's still just 1), and you don't see any of the Darkners reacting to the loss of their friends and family. The cars in the streets disappear, but it's not quite the same as seeing Snowdin Town abandoned.

The focus has shifted, from the way you're ruining the world at large by killing, to the way you're corrupting, ruining, the character doing the killing.

But how do you make that focus clear, when Kris's emotions and will are already so suppressed by the player?

You bring in another character under your command, who's even more hesitant to fight than Ralsei. And you break her.

You teach her that it's okay to use whatever methods to get what you want. You teach her to see everyone else as just enemies to cut down. You teach her that getting stronger is the most important thing.

And Kris changes too in this run - you're only able to push Noelle so far (after the first few murders) because crueler dialogue options come up for them, and Susie can tell when they reunite that something's off. But the focus is on Noelle, because it's a lot easier to see how horrible it is when it happens to her. To a character you can't write off as just a mold for you to pour yourself into, or as the embodiment of your own desire for power.

TL:DR;

In UnderTale, you primarily feel bad for killing your friends, and for being a murderer.

In DeltaRune, you primarily feel bad for making someone else a worse person, and for using them (still to kill people).

And if you see how horrible it is to do that to a person - a kid ("teens are just bigger children") - who never asked for it in DeltaRune...

Consider turning that lens of analysis back on UnderTale proper.

Don't forget about Frisk and Chara. Don't forget what you did to them.

P.S. - Some more factors which don't really fit into the rest of this analysis:

UnderTale is a fantasy game through and through. DeltaRune has a clear divide between its fantasy world and the "normal" world. It's one thing to fight, even freeze, all these fantasy creatures. It's another thing when the consequences come home to roost in the real world.

Chapter 1 is set up to make us think a route like this wouldn't be possible. And even in Chapter 2, fighting enemies normally isn't enough to trigger a significantly worse ending. It can only happen because you go against the script (the whole thing starts with you backtracking to Spamton's shop, after all) and make both Kris and Noelle act so out of character.

I honestly hadn’t really considered this one until I joined the fandom. Vanessa is one of my favourite Black Clover characters, and there’s not a lot of content about her in terms of fanfictions and such so I went on this big binge where I read a wide variety of fics with her in them (regardless of pairings ect.), and this included several about her and Nozel. It’s a fun concept that has grown on me, and I can see the appeal given that they have such wildly different personalities. I really like the idea of Nozel ending up with someone who gets him to lighten up, given that he is so tightly wound and serious most of the time, and I could see Vanessa benefiting from a relationship with someone who has a more grounding, steady influence since she’s a bit wild and free-spirited. I think I’d need to see them interact more in the canon before I'd say I ship it, but I can see the potential. 😊

Honestly, Vanessa is one of those characters who I could see ending up happy in lots of different relationships with lots of different people, so I suppose it’s really just up to her and the type of person she would choose to share her life with. Nozel is a bit of a trickier one because I’m not sure if he even knows what type of person he’d want to be with if he had that choice. In my mind, he has probably just expected to eventually be forced into a political alliance, arranged marriage, and he has such a strong sense of duty and responsibility that I think he wouldn’t even allow himself to wish for or even entertain the possibility of getting to make such decisions on his own. That said, they are both royalty (or at least I headcanon that there are since, in my mind at least, Vanessa is the Witch Queen’s biological daughter and the “crown princess” of the Forest of Witches) so I don’t think it would be too much of a problem if they decided they wanted to marry each other. I suppose the question for me is whether that’s something they would want—whether they’d choose each other. We haven’t really gotten to see them interact in the canon yet (and I wish we would) so it’s hard to say what they’d think of each other. I could see them not getting along at first—especially given how protective Vanessa is of Noelle. In the beginning, I think she’d probably view Nozel with the same kind of distaste she has for Langris (given her friendship with Finral and how nasty Langris has been to him). But I can imagine Vanessa overcoming that with Langris and them becoming friends, so I think she and Nozel could eventually reach a similar kind of understanding and become friends one day too, once Nozel shows her that he has genuine remorse for the way he treated Noelle and is making a genuine effort to make amends with his sister.

As for their personalities, I can see them either growing to really appreciate their differences and having this lovely balance with each other or just completely butting heads and struggling to get along. It’s a hard call for me there. On the one hand, it’s possible that she’d find him too stuffy and too much a stick in the mud, and/or perhaps he’d find her too wild, reckless, and irresponsible. But on the other hand, it’s also possible that they’d come to love these differences in each other—that he’d love her independence, strong will, and free spirit and she’d love his loyalty, his depth, and his desire to do the right thing. I’m not sure if I can say how they would feel about each other and how all of that would shake out without more context from the canon, but if they grow to love each other and did decide they wanted to be together, I could get behind it. The circumstances just have to be right, I think. 💖

Some headcanons about them:

Nozel is affectionately nicknamed “Braids” by the Black Bulls the first time Vanessa brings him round to properly meet her friends. He does not like the nickname, but unfortunately, it sticks even to the point that he ends up as “Uncle Braids” for a period of time once the Bulls start having kids.

Vanessa and Nozel keep their relationship a secret for a while, only because they don’t want things to be awkward (with her friends especially) if things don’t end up working out. Vanessa often teases him that all the sneaking around is exciting, but Nozel, even though he is a private person and doesn't think his love life is anyone else's business, would much rather have their relationship out in the open so he doesn’t feel like he’s doing something wrong and also so Vanessa won’t think he has ill-intentions towards her. He is quite the gentleman and rather old-fashioned in that way, and Vanessa thinks it is very sweet.

When they finally do decide to tell their friends, Fuegoleon and Finral are told first and are both extremely happy for them. Their other friends have varying reactions when they are told. Dorothy thinks it’s hilarious and is very supportive, and the majority of the Silver Eagles’ squad is surprised that their Captain is actually interested in romance, as he’s usually all business. The Black Bulls are mostly surprised and take a bit to come around to the idea. Captain Yami just laughs, and Charmy thinks Vanessa has settled but not as much as she could have. Asta has to be told several times before he finally understands, and Luck and Magna immediately challenge Nozel to a sparring match so he can prove that he’s “worthy” of her.

Noelle doesn’t exactly know how to feel about their relationship at first, but she is eventually very happy for them and loves having Vanessa as a sister-in-law (even if, on some level, she thinks Vanessa sort of settled for her brother 😅). Vanessa does not put up with any rubbish from Solid or Nebra, but I could imagine she would eventually be on cordial terms with them if they put in the effort to make amends with Noelle. Vanessa gets along fairly well with everyone, after all, but she doesn’t have any patience for people hurting her friends. Her ability to hold her own against the Silvas, earns her their respect on some level, I think, and it's definitely something Nozel really likes and admires about her.

Vanessa is extremely touchy-feely and openly affectionate, but Nozel is very shy about that kind of thing. He does not like showing affection in public, and Vanessa holding his hand under the table at a fancy dinner with the other magic knight captains is enough to make him blush a distinctive pink. He cares about her, however, and wants her to feel loved so he does his best to learn how to be more affectionate at home—mostly through little things like patting her shoulder when he walks by or pushing her hair out of her face or kissing her forehead.

Nozel likes to show his affection through giving gifts, and, over their years together, he has given Vanessa a wide variety of beautiful and expensive jewelry, including a necklace that belonged to his mother, Acier.

Nozel dates Vanessa for a long time before proposing, to the point that even Vanessa who really wasn’t in that much of a hurry to get married to begin with, is questioning, “Are you ever going to ask me?” 😂 Nozel wants the big, somewhat stuffy, traditional wedding befitting Clover Kingdom nobility (not because it’s what he wants for himself but because it’s what is expected of him), and Vanessa eventually concedes since she knows this is important to him. She does get her rowdy, high-energy reception though, which (to the embarrassment of most of the stuffy nobles and royals in attendance) is a huge party with lots of booze. 😂

They have three children together: fraternal twin girls, then a boy. One of the daughters is named Acier after Nozel’s mother. (I know it’s very popular to have the name go to Asta & Noelle’s kid, but since Nozel had such a deep connection with his mom, I’ve always liked the idea that Noelle lets him have the name for one of his kids). I love the idea of Nozel as a “girl dad”—I imagine he’s a very devoted father (if a little protective, especially of his daughters). Vanessa as a mother is one of my favourite things too—she would be such a good parent, and I love the idea of her having twins given all of the Rapunzel vibes in her backstory. 💖 (Though I am sure it came as a big surprise to Nozel who was already very stressed about having one child--let alone two. Vanessa helps him lighten up about it though, and they both love their children very much). One of their daughters takes after Nozel and the other takes after Vanessa. Their son takes after his Aunt Noelle. 😊
