Hello! I just found both your IF's today and I love them both, and apologizes if this has been asked before- but what advice would you give someone that also wants to start writing Interactive fiction? I've been wanting to for a while now but don't have the courage,,
I’m so glad that you’re enjoying both of my IFs! I’ll admit it’s kind of a boost to my ego to hear that someone enjoys my IFs enough to ask for advice ☺️.
Some general writing tips:
-Figuring out the story you want to tell. Try sticking to something you know will keep your interest and something that you enjoy writing.
- Developing your world. I can not emphasize this enough. Before you even start thinking of starting to write, make sure you have developed enough of the world and characters that you want to create so that you don’t end up stuck or contradicting yourself later on.
- Your writing doesn’t have to be perfect. Sometimes simply getting words out of your brain and onto the paper is the most important part of the process. You can always go back and correct your grammar later.
- It’s okay to take breaks. Make sure not to overwhelm yourself. You’ll just end up burnt out.
Advice for IF Creation:
- Make sure to develop your other characters. Their lives shouldn’t completely revolve around the MC. If they do, the characters end up feeling flat.
- Make sure you feel comfortable coding. There are two main sites/apps that people use to code, CScript and Twine, look into both and see which one suits you.
- Don’t feel pressured to make everything an option. This is something I struggled with when I was first creating Aequitas. While options are definitely important, it’s also important to have a believable story with a consistent plot.
- Don’t be afraid to look for resources or ask for help. I had no coding experience before writing Aequitas - absolutely none. I looked through a bunch of posts on COG to learn how.
- Play other IF games! In my experience playing other IFs definitely helped me with figuring out how the pacing of mine should go and how I should implement certain options/stats into the story.

i saw some of your posts about the recent update to the website and i saw a mention of how the character anthony has gone over theories on how ghosts work in the story’s universe, would you happen to know where that info is on the site or if there is a post that compiles that info?
Yes! Anthony has a whole section on findjackwalten under /brightonghosts where he has pages on 'known' ghost interactions and his own speculations.
lets run through them briefly
/ghosthaunt where we get an introduction to what ghosts are and why they might exist. There's a paragraph where a therapist discusses the relationship between the dead and the living which is really interesting to apply to the series as a whole
/endghost, which is a seemingly joke page until you scroll to the bottom and it drops this really harrowing line: 'haha just kidding, I have no idea. There's never been any well-known instance where one has to defeat or neutralize an Un-Dead being' which is TERRIFYING to imply
/ghosttalk, where there's an in-depth perspective on interaction between the dead and the living shown through a man using sentimental objects and paper to communicate with his dead wife. It's really interesting to see the process described as ritual-like, and the ghosts being almost non-sentient. They seem to exist as vaccums of emotion and presence depending on the circumstance. On this page we see pages Ferrel's wife is claimed to have written on, deciphered here:
(courtesy of thewaltenarchives on neocities)
/poker. the page currently has a tip-off to find /rosemarysartroom. The original page used to reply to the prompt 'can I play poker with a ghost', saying "No, it's not possible to play poker with a ghost, they're dead, after all."
and finally, 'can a ghost kill me?' which leads to /missing, the page that the first version of the site that functioned as a missing poster for jack used to have as a link-in to contact if you had found Jack Walten. spooky.
I would definately reccomend poking around yourself. These are the only links on Anthony's section that seem to directly promise ghost-related content but the whole website is obviously full of them LOL. Anthony is also a fun character.

keep seeing undergrads on social media saying “oh if a prof has a strict no-AI academic integrity policy that’s a red flag for me because that means they don’t know how to design assignments” like sorry girl but that just sounds like you’ve got a case of sour grapes about not being allowed to cheat with the plagiarism machine that doesn’t know how to evaluate sources and kills the environment! I have a strict no-AI policy because if you use AI to write your essays for a writing course it’s literally plagiarism because you didn’t write it and you’re not learning any of the things the course teaches if you just plug a prompt into the plagiarism generator that kills the environment, hope this helps!

this is a poster i made for my call to action assignment in humanities! it's a bunch of basic and easy stretches for people who sit and work at a desk all day (me)
the idea is that you'd put the poster up above ur desk and do the stretches every 30 minutes or so,, the whole routine won't take more than about 6 minutes to complete and when done regularly it can prevent wrist, shoulder, neck and back pain! :)
all these stretches can be done while sitting (although i HIGHLY recommend you stand up and move around while taking a break from working)
you can get a free digital copy of this poster here on my gumroad!
and you can order a print/poster here from my inprnt!

When Senshi was young in the dungeon the majority of the adults he were with ostracized him. All except Gillin, who died to make sure Senshi had something to eat: unseasoned boiled meat that may or may not have been one of their comrades.
It really puts into perspective why he was so nurturing towards Chilchuck. When Chil reveals he’s 28 to the party, Senshi responds by telling him that he thought he was older. Senshi was in his 30s when he and his comrades got trapped in the dungeon, so it’s safe to assume that he thought Chil was at a similar age.
He met a young boy who was, from his perspective, forced to do dangerous work in the dungeon just like he was, and so, Senshi made an effort to look after Chilchuck in the same way Gillin looked after him.
Mind you, when Senshi was young in the dungeon he had to starve for weeks, eat the horse he loved, and finish it off spending the next i don’t know how many years wondering if he committed cannibalism.
Senshi understands first hand the value of nutrition and proper eating, so when he’s with the party he makes an effort to make sure they’re all eating a full and balanced diet. Not only that, but Senshi INVOLVES them in the process of getting food to eat, always preparing it in front of them and narrating every ingredient in the process so that there’s no doubt about what they’re eating.

Ahmed Saad or @/90-ghost's brother in law is currently doing his best to organise the evacuation of his family from Gaza. This family suffers from a combination of ailments that all require medical attention. This is the description on their GFM page:
Hello, I hope you all are doing well!
My name is Mohamed Monir Ahmad Mahmoud, I’m a hemophilia patient from Gaza. I decided to start this campaign with all the hope that you could support me in evacuating Gaza to do surgery for me and my daughter and start a fresh life with my 5 kids out of the ongoing genocide in Gaza [...] I was supposed to go out at the end of 2023 to have surgery on my knees but since 7 October, I had no chance due to the procedures on Rafah crossing, the gate of Gazans to the world. Now, my knees and elbows are bleeding with no access to any type of care and if things stand as they are in Gaza, I won’t be able to walk or make any effort because of the bleeding (currently I am barely able to set up a small fire in front of the tent to prepare food for my kids).
What I ask is 60,000, for travel costs because each one would need to pay 5,000-8,000$ to be allowed to leave Gaza through Rafah crossing and we need around 3000$ more in Egypt for our stay and to obtain visas. We will be heading to Brazil where my brother Diaa lives and there is a huge chance to do the surgeries and access health care as the health care for Hemophilia patients in Brazil is one of the most advanced in the world.
please give generously!!

Today my therapist introduced me to a concept surrounding disability that she called "hLep".
Which is when you - in this case, you are a disabled person - ask someone for help ("I can't drink almond milk so can you get me some whole milk?", or "Please call Donna and ask her to pick up the car for me."), and they say yes, and then they do something that is not what you asked for but is what they think you should have asked for ("I know you said you wanted whole, but I got you skim milk because it's better for you!", "I didn't want to ruin Donna's day by asking her that, so I spent your money on an expensive towing service!") And then if you get annoyed at them for ignoring what you actually asked for - and often it has already happened repeatedly - they get angry because they "were just helping you! You should be grateful!!"
And my therapist pointed out that this is not "help", it's "hLep".
Sure, it looks like help; it kind of sounds like help too; and if it was adjusted just a little bit, it could be help. But it's not help. It's hLep.
At its best, it is patronizing and makes a person feel unvalued and un-listened-to. Always, it reinforces the false idea that disabled people can't be trusted with our own care. And at its worst, it results in disabled people losing our freedom and control over our lives, and also being unable to actually access what we need to survive.
So please, when a disabled person asks you for help on something, don't be a hLeper, be a helper! In other words: they know better than you what they need, and the best way you can honor the trust they've put in you is to believe that!
Also, I want to be very clear that the "getting angry at a disabled person's attempts to point out harmful behavior" part of this makes the whole thing WAY worse. Like it'd be one thing if my roommate bought me some passive-aggressive skim milk, but then they heard what I had to say, and they apologized and did better in the future - our relationship could bounce back from that. But it is very much another thing to have a crying shouting match with someone who is furious at you for saying something they did was ableist. Like, Christ, Jessica, remind me to never ask for your support ever again! You make me feel like if I asked you to call 911, you'd order a pizza because you know I'll feel better once I eat something!!
Edit: crediting my therapist by name with her permission - this term was coined by Nahime Aguirre Mtanous!
Edit again: I made an optional follow-up to this post after seeing the responses. Might help somebody. CW for me frankly talking about how dangerous hLep really is.
