notes: 18+, top reader and bottom characters. includes: america (alfred), canada (matthew), france (francis), england (arthur), china (yao). i think some of my opinions on this are unpopular but pls don’t attack me for it lmaoo, as always, reblogs are appreciated!

first of all, those who would be most interested in it would be francis who is just kinky as fuck, feliciano who is down to roll around however and yao who is so old and easily bored nowadays that you have got to switch it up often anyways. the least would be ivan, who is just overall not a super big fan of bottoming and arthur who is similar and just. struggles to get into most things involving toys. alfred and matthew are in the middle area.

francis loves sex. something has to be really bewildering for him to be particularly opposed — hell, it’s likely that he brought it up himself if you’re more hesitant to. if you bring it up first, he’s pleasantly surprised and causally agrees; he has high expectations! but, honestly, even if you suck at it, he just takes it as an opportunity to teach you. he’ll tell you how to fuck him right through his breathy, soft moans, encouraging and awfully sweet about the whole thing. but, if you do know what you’re doing or are more confident, he’s more than happy to take it. he actually cums a lot harder when something is in his ass to be honest. he’d most certainly want it to become a more regular thing.

like francis, yao might end up bringing this up himself. he is old and, honestly, very few things shock him. he’s not someone who needs super niche hardcore stuff to get off, but he thinks it’s beneficial for everyone involved to switch things up often enough!! he’s used to bottoming to begin with, so this is by no means his first rodeo. bigger the better

alfred is not very opinionated about these things, to be honest. by default, he likes getting his dick wet, so he doesn’t think about bottoming very often. when presented with the idea, though, he’s by no means opposed! he takes it like a champ, and if you didn’t already have it, he got plenty of lube! would be very embarrassed by the fact he got fucked though. he doesn’t really have a reason to be, he just gets flustered if you remind him outside of the bedroom

ivan isn’t inherently particularly dominating in intimacy, but he very much likes to be the one deciding the pace with sex. and while you can argue that bottoming isn’t a forfeit, because that’s true to him it feels like it. he’s just…. very stubborn and would likely be dismissive of the idea. if he trusts you a LOTTTTT i think he’d be more open to the idea. you’ll have to unlock ivan level 99 first though. good luck adventurer

i was having very mixed feelings on matthew. i do think he’d be down though. at least post 2020 matthew would be. prior to that, i dont think he’d be downright opposed to it, but he doesn’t entirely get it…. once it happens though, he doesn’t think it’s a huge deal. doesn’t love the feeling (just isn’t really into the feeling if the toy, thinks its a bit uncomfy regardless of lube) but if your thrust game is good enough it can compensate for the toy feeling!

arthur has bottomed before, but it was almost, if not just straight up always, because his companion for that night had a willy and refused to bottom themselves. arthur isn’t against it, even if it isn’t what he naturally gravitates towards — but… pegging? maybe a younger, more adventurous arthur would be a bit intrigued, but the man barely accepts that vibrators can help spice things up. he just… struggles to see the point, but he’s likely to try it out if you two are long term partners. i can’t see him being very into it, but he’ll indulge you once in a blue moon to please you because he loves you <33

Hi ! So, I don't know if you're familiar with Chinese dramas, but I would like to recommend one that might remind you a little of Darklina. A good old enemies to tragic lovers, where the heroine will unfortunately not end up with the bad boy (with whom things will never come to fruition and will remain unsaid on both sides) but with the nice guy. It's called Lost You Forever. And to give you a quick description of the interesting relationship in this series ; We are Xiao Yao is in love with Jing (Whom I very like. He is clearly the archetypal nice guy she'll end up with, but like, a really good guy, on top of being a good character, not like that trash Mal Oretsev), but let's be realistic, that would never have happened if a relationship with Xiang Liu (the best male character in this series) was possible from my point of view. It's very clear that she's in love with him and it's circumstances that are keeping them from letting go and being together. I have no doubt that if circumstances would have allowed, Xiang Liu would have been Xiao Yao's first choice and vice versa. Jing and Xiang Liu are literally the two males characters that Xiao Yao is canonically in love with, but there is no doubt who in my eyes she loves the most.

Sorry, but Xiao Yao knows in this moment that Jing is in a dying coma, could die at any moment, and when she wakes up, the first person she hopes / wants to see is Xiang Liu and her bird takes her to see him ? And when she understands that she won't see him, she takes her time to lie down where they both were to cry ? Okay he healed her and she wants to thank him, but that's definitely not the type of reaction you get when the love of your life is in mortal danger and you can't see another man you're close to, technically your enemy on top of that, who just saved you, and whom you supposedly just love platonically.

But the thing is, you don't always end up with the person you would have chosen. They love each other, but know their relationship is doomed to failure given the circumstances they are in, so they do not act on their feelings and will never allow themselves to. It's so tragic. Typically the kind of story I love, even if it tears my heart out.

At least that's my interpretation, as well as that of many people.

Xiang Liu is your characteristically gray character who first appears as a villain to ultimately be much more complex (with good and bad actions) who will end up in love with the heroine he will protect, despite the fact that they are technically enemies. In addition to that, they will obviously be entitled to a great magical connection which re-connects their sensations (like, she is physically injured, he is) and emotions (like, their hearts beat to the same rhythm).

But of course, there will always be anti-complexity people who will come and tell you, to the point of contradicting themselves to justify a non-romantic love on the part of the heroine, that she only cries because she has the heart too good and feels sorry for him (I remind you that at the same time, the lady knows very well that the other guy she supposedly loves, Jing, is dying...), but also that she uses for her own personal purposes because she has no real affection for him ! We like contradiction, simply because we don't like that a heroine can have contradictory feelings for a morally gray guy !

And the fact that of all the male characters, Xiang Liu is the only one of whom the heroine wanted to keep a trace in her magic mirror ?! Why is that also just her using him or only having a platonic feeling towards him ? Let's be serious for two seconds and let's accept the complexity of a human heart !

Or there are obviously simply those who will tell you that despite the fact that the guy is a gray character he is only toxic and bad for the heroine, treating her really badly ! (I still want to say that without this guy who causes her apparently so much pain, well she would have been dead and buried a long time ago !)

In fact, if I really had to compare Xiao Yao with Xiang Liu and Jing, I would say Xiang Liu is a call from the heart and Jing is a call from the head. She loves them both, but Jing brings her a trust and loyalty that she could never have from Xiang Liu given the circumstances of their respective responsibilities which technically categorizes them as enemies, even if they never really acting like that in my eyes. Also, we could see Xiang Liu as a character / creature of the order of fantasy in terms of symbolism, and therefore with whom the heroine could never have a real future, and that she will have to leave at one point or another, but which has importance in her present life in order to help her develop as a person.

Afterwards, as another story that could remind Darklina, I will recommend the Chinese drama Love Between Fairy and devil. In terms of books, I would say the trilogy a forbidden game by L.J Smith with Jenny & Julian, the shadow men, or the Empirium trilogy with Corien & Rielle. Dragonlance with Raistlin & Crysania. Only ships associated with light and darkness basically.

Either way, I'm a sucker for enemies-to-lovers or villain / gray / anti-hero characters in-love dynamics. It's so fascinating, and above all much more interesting than with a cute and nice guy without much personality in comparison... There is no worse crime than being boring in fiction.

Honestly I wish there was more Amechu and black triangle, the contrast and similarities of rusame could also be applied to Amechu and I wish the fandom would take advantage of it

unfortunately the fandom refuses to take advantage of it because most people here just don't care about yao LOLLLLLL...alfred and ivan are both very popular characters in their own right so naturally their ship will have that advantage. and I love rusame! their dynamic is so good! but it is INCREDIBLY baffling that amechu does not get that same level of love from the fandom when their ship dynamic would logically be what most ppl see rusame as if not even more fucked up and toxic lol. it's the way that they are so similar in their self-absorbedness and their love for money and power and material things and it's ALSO the way they could be juxtaposed as the ancient dark-haired androgynous being who knows what it's like to be at their lowest and knows how to play the long game versus the young blond-haired archetype of the all-american boy who rose to the top and has stayed there and is terrified of losing it all and it’s also yao saying to alfred “america…we’re friends, right?�� in the most unserious NEKOTALIA STRIP.....okay I'm in my feelings about them rn. but I digress.

Final thoughts on Mysterious Lotus Casebook~

Things I loved:

The main characters! Fang Xiaobao for character of all time. Who’s doing it like him? That ponytail should win an award for best supporting actor. Li Lianhua is obviously incredible but I’m going to hold a grudge against him for making Xiaobao sad. Di Feisheng was unexpectedly hilarious. Man comes out of a ten year recovery period and his first words are ‘I need a rematch’.

The minor characters! Princess Xiaoling was amazing. Yang Yunchun constantly simping for Shi from Baichuan court was hilarious. Shoutout to Murong Yao for being super hot. Qiao Wanmian for queen of everything.

The villains (mostly)! Shan Gudao and Xiao Zijin being parallels because nobody was comparing you to Li Xiangyi except you (but it’s still so understandable that they would be so envious even as it doesn’t excuse their actions)! Shan Gudao not actually being secret royalty! Local man needs to just get a grip (but won’t)!

The themes! Dealing with grief and loss! Finding closure! Learning to live after a tragedy! Great job everyone, hit the showers.

The hurt/comfort! Enough said.

The wonderful trope I will choose every time: you don’t have to go along with your biological family when they’re toxic as fuck! I kept waiting for Xiaobao to be like ‘but he’s my real father, I have to do what he wants!’ but every single time Xiaobao was just like ‘wow fuck that guy, I’ve got parents who raised me and who love me and that dude fuckin’ sucks’. 1000000/10, no notes.

Things I did not love as much:

Although I don’t think JLQ is supposed to be particularly relatable, her whole motivation was like. Lady. He’s just not into you. Get a grip. Got very annoying by the end.

Most mystery shows, I like to try to solve things as clues are revealed and that was just not possible in this show. It felt like every single case ended with LLH giving a five minute monologue on stuff that there was no possible way the audience could have known, but he personally had figured out. I could barely track it even while he explained it. I’m still not sure who murdered Jin Mantang. Don’t get me wrong, the cases were fun and interesting, but Agatha Christie, they weren’t. Especially egregious towards the end, what with Li ‘I’ve deduced the entire imperial line is illegitimate based on two seconds looking at this mural which the audience hasn’t even seen’ Lianhua.

The ending didn’t thrill me. Like, it’s sad but you see it coming so you can kind of make peace with it. I even get why LLH wouldn’t let FDB even try to save him, because he didn’t want FDB to feel like he failed. But in that case, why the ambiguity? Couldn’t he have gone to his master’s grave and let them find his body or something? Just feels very rude lol.

tl;dr solid show and a lot of fun, definitely enjoyed it but don’t feel it rewiring my brain lol

So the ask got deleted accidentally, but @autisticharrywells asked me about SANGYAO for toxic ship bingo, and now that I have forcibly dragged them through all 50 episodes, i can at last go off---- you FOOL! you have fallen directly into my trap!!! Muahahaha

I do not know how I ended up here. I don't know WHY I ended up here, except that I'm some kind of masochist.

Like I was all prepared to be 100% team wangxian otp and read all the fic and shit, and I started out so promising. (And I do love them...) But then. Then. That little demon brought a bird to class. And the other little demon protected him during the Wen thing. The stabbing ?? The warning as Meng Yao was leaving to huaisang DESPITE actively bleeding. The pleading to Mingjue to let Meng Yao stay despite no evidence of Huaisang ever really standing up to question NMJ decisions before like that (esp in front of other clan members) (other than with things like blowing off Sabre practice) THE FAN CLENCH. MY HEART. And THEN they committed their various atrocities during which the no turning back point was hit for them so many times and yet i do believe the remorse was there and so too was some affection still, twisted as it was by time and hatred and isolation and i... I just....I slipped?

There's so much there!!! (and please keep in mind I'm mostly talking from a cql/the untamed perspective, though I have seen the donghua and am aware of book cannon, I just kinda prefer the show as the version I take to heart (with some notable jgy or Huaisang based exceptions bc i'm nothing if not willing to excuse their pretty boy mid-divorce war crimes))

These two have such a deep shared history that spans the entirety of the cannon, and their relationship is extra fascinating on rewatch as you can more clearly track the downward spiral of events.

There's also the tragedy that it COULD have been avoided, was so close to being avoided several times bc JGY is not really EVIL, (any one who says this is being super reductive imo) but he does preserve himself above all other things and people through sheer learned necessity (with the exception of xichen and isn't that also a beautiful part of sangyao tragedy?? That so clearly xichen and JGY were destined to be the tragic counterparts to wwx and lwj's relationship not nhs and jgy? That xichen was the only thing JGY ever sacrificed true parts of himself for, that huaisang knows that he could have done the same for him, but didn't? Because there was too much history with Mingjue to let it go, and also bc the devotion or affection he held for huaisang when they were both on the mountain never surpassed that point. He had too much caution to truly be himself, and Huaisang, I don't think could ever truly see past JGYs status in the way that xichen was able to since he served as his big brother's vice general and also his appointed companion to a degree. ) And where does that leave huaisang? Where he always is. ALONE. On a mountain he never fit in on in the first place. Where does it leave JGY? Stuck in a permanant customer service role to his awful father and branded further untrustable as a spy. Humilated and broken down to the point of just. So much murder. (Some of which I still maintain tain as a public service coughcoughJinGuangShancoughcough)

They are so much alike and yet so different in such key aspects, that I also have to believe they were meant to act as parallels to one another, just like wwx and jgy, or xichen and wangji. The planning and manipulation they both do (in their own ways bc i am in the camp that while huaisang is smarter than the average bear, smarter than he ever wants to let on bc it makes his life easier, he isnt able to truly outpace JGY's ability to craft a situation. What he is good at is manipulating people and social situations, and adapting his outlined plan extremely well on the fly- with the exception of maybe xichen. I dont think he meant to truly hurt xichen like that. I think that was a natural panic that if JGY was allowed to live it would mean Huaisang actually had to die at some point instead, Though I do also think perhaps there is some lingering resentment there that leads to it to bc why is JGY worth pardoning after his crimes to xichen? Doesn't this mean he inherently valued JGY over Mingjue, over Huaisang’s own pain and anguish? (he did, but not maliciously, lans are love blind we know this))

The tragedies of nie huaisang are inextricably linked to the tragedies of jgy and vice versa! Technically, huaisang, as a bastard of the clan leader with one of his concubines, (I think that's right) should be discounted as a noble son, esp considering his weaker nature and lack of talents dictated to be valuable by the standards of the nie clan. He should have the same status really or at least a status more closely similar to jgy who is constatly looked down on because of his mother's position and bastard status, despite his constant hyper competency, as we see so vividly. And yet Huaisang is given title and rank and (some) respect where JGY gets trodden into the mud and shit of life, even as he succeeds in raising the jin clans success through his actions and talents. Meanwhile, huaisang is thought to be a useless leech by others, untalented in the ways of ruling or anything that's deemed an actually respectable skill by clan leader standards. A pathetic little dude who doesn't know how to do anything, and yes, he does get cast as a headshaker in the eyes of the people, but it's never his background thats brought into question as to why he might be failing. It's considered a result of his personality, not his upbringing. And even then he doesn't get shit talked as much as JGY does. Huaisang has all the privilege that JGY was never afforded, and does that color JGYs view a bit? Does it make him just bitter enough that, when combined with his father’s looming threats and taunts, and Mingjue’s inability to ever let anything JGY does go, that he's willing to hurt huaisang in such a way, even just as a byproduct of his mission?

Huaisang’s plan is successful, bc people discount him as incompetent, yes, but also bc they still see him as a noble, as someone of enough inherent value, diminished though it may be, that he weilds that influence even when playing the fool. JGY doesn't get that respect even at his height of his power and competency as a ruler.

They are, neither of them, strong cultivators. But that factor only really affects JGY bc it means he has to fight even harder for acceptance and validation. Huaisang also gets the luxury of CHOOSING not to be a strong cultivator. Because his position in life IS secure, he can slack off. He is allowed to try his hardest to avoid the fate of his family and do his utmost not to cultivate in that manner. Which I think, too, causes some of the resentment. On both sides. Huaisang never has to work a day in his life, has barely any expectations to live up to and still gets the respect Meng Yao is constantly robbed of. And for huaisang- On top of killing his brother via musically-induced, full-bodied rage embolism, JGY is now also the reason that huaisang is thrust into a position he was entirely unprepared for way before he was supposed to be.

And we know, we KNOW that JGY is responsible for so many of Huaisang’s pretty little things. His beloved indulgences granted not by his own brother, but by his doting san-ge. Things that got burned or destroyed by Mingjue simplu for the fact that a) they were from JGY and B) they are not the type of things NMJ cosidereds respectabke hobbies or skills. A large number of his fans and painting supplies are gifts from JGY, and he stood up for and encouraged those hobbies against the person he probably fears the most at that point, Mingjue (even if he's already actively trying to kill him by then). And huaisang seemed genuinely pleased that JGY had found acceptance and was getting what he (thought he) wanted. The friendship and affection was real, just not near strong enough to withstand the crimes of the other.

And oh boy that divorce was rough and bloody and beautiful and tragic and I just love the messy nature of the relationship, how deep and how twisted it went and became. And i think, right up until the very end, JGY didn't truly want to believe that Huaisang was capable of doing this to him, I don't think he ever wanted to hurt huaisang again the way he had to when he killed Mingjue. Use him? Maybe. But not in a malicious way, not by his standards.

I am happy to read any sangyao content I can get, however! I love reading about them as companions on the mountain, growing together, bonding. Maybe young and in love? I love reading the gradual drifting apart. The years they schemed and used each other. The final divorce. And what comes after. Or what could never be. Any content, I will take, and it depends on where in cannon we are that a particular square is filled in.

Jgy had to fight for both acceptance and sheer survival, and huaisang never really had to do either. Except maybe during the ~10 years of the gap when Huaisang had figured him out, but was pretending to be useless to achieve his ends. You could argue the mindset that aside from just avenging his DaGe, he was also concerned about his own survival bc what if he became an Inconvienience instead of just the annoyance he was playing up to be? If he actually stood in Guanyao's way? It would be much easier to take him out than Mingjue, realistically. But what would be that threshold to have JGY actually do anything? Are Huaisang’s histrionics and uselessness useful to him? Or a result of guilty indulgence? Or left over fondness from a ti.e they were so close? Some combo of all? Who can say and I fucking love that uncertainty about them

Saying all that, these two are the poster child for OTP I don't want to end up together in Canon, lol. Unless it's one of the many time travel fix it aus, they simply have too much history and shared issues and rage between them to ever make sense working out. But their stories are so incomplete without the other, they are inexorably linked, and I just think they're neat!

(Please don't come for me cql fans. im sure I've misunderstood or posted an opinion that's utterly debatable on here. But like, also. I'm tired and I love them and I don't care.)

I have more to say about them that you'll probably get to hear at some point when we talk, but for now, they have BROKEN MY BRAIN.

Tenar granted her the honorary warband name Kitetail, and they wandered northern Elona together, struggling to survive and find a way back to their Legion, or failing that, a new home & purpose in Elona. The Zephyrites were the answer. When the Zephyr Fleet was able to offer passage back to Ascalon years later, Tenar and her granddaughter, now called Cirrus, refused, having fallen in love with their new people. Cirrus joined Dragon’s Watch after the Dry Top crash. Bubbly, combative, short attention span.

Gonna be real with you, I’ve never heard of that pairing! So gonna say, definitely a rare pair.

I don’t know about any historical context that would spark the ship (like how FRUK is just enemies to lovers to enemies and back in a never ending cycle). I’m not gonna get into the intricacies of nationverse because I don’t personally know enough about Chinese and French histories beyond broad understandings from my high school AP studies. Also, I’m not gonna consider canon material because I don’t think Fran and Yao have interacted much since seasons 1-4 and I hate early France characterization

If I were to throw them together in some sort of human AU, I’m not sure they’d get along and not in a fun enemies to lovers or toxic codependency kinda scenario. I think Yao can be dramatic in his own right but can’t stand Francis’ particular brand of over-the-top Drama Queen. These two definitely have their differences, but they have similarities that make them clash. You know how “opposites attract?” Yeah, the opposite of that.

In my head they’re both artistically inclined men who have refined tastes in food. They’re both Pretty And About To Make It Your Problem (Yao was the OG Pretty Boy but Francis is loud about his own attractiveness). Both of them experiment with their gender expression through clothing (I don’t think this would set them apart, but it’s definitely something I think about often with the two of them because I Envy Them). Both of them try to take on a mentor-figure to the younger people in their lives (For Yao it’s Kiku and Yong Soo and for Francis it’s Mattie and Alfred). Both are stubborn, proud, and opinionated.

I don’t know what would draw them together, but if this is a ship of yours Anon, I’d love to hear about it because this isn’t something I’ve heard of!

I’ve been thinking of a Bakery AU when I’m at work and Yao and Francis are actually the managers. Yao was formerly the cake decorator but ended up moving to be the department manager and regrets the decision immensely. He hates corporate because the way they do things is stupid and the way he runs the bakery is efficient. Francis is the assistant manager and is vying to become department manager but Yao doesn’t trust him. Francis is skilled and in theory is capable to be more in charge than he already is as assistant manager, but his ambition and need for validation would clash with the systems Yao’s set up and trained their employees with. Also!! When they train new employees Yao is very to the point and is a good teacher with some patience (he’s a perfectionist and likes to stick to his routine) whereas Fran handholds the whole way though. Yao is more reliable than Francis is but is prone to being a hardass. In the end they can get along at work, but their relationship is best left at that, especially since they’re rarely on shift at the same time if ever at all.

I don't know why but Xiang Liu reminds me a lot of Gongzi from Bloody Romance in how deliciously toxic and volatile he is, yet he emerges as a tamer version of him as well, since Gongzi did a lot of shitty things that, from my scarce knowledge based on the small amount of eps of Lost You Forever I've seen since I'm saving myself for when it finishes airing, are not truly on par with what Xiang Liu has done. Now yes, Xiang Liu is forceful in his own way, his mistreatment of Xiao Yao is enough to make the poor girl scurry away whenever he tries to touch her, not to mention how he never even asks for permission before practically stabbing his fangs into her neck. But that is NOTHING compared to what Gongzi did to Wan Mei. Like I hated Gongzi with all my heart for torturing Wan Mei purely due to his insecurities and basically toyed with her, making her prove to him constantly that she was deservant of him, despite the fact she didn't even want him to begin with. But I also couldn't help but feel attracted to him ya know? His greed for affection and understanding, a trait I find Xiang Liu to also possess which is why I think they're similar, made him so attractive in my eyes. I absolutely loved it, when he sat into his aesthetically pleasing room surrounded by his expensive furniture, drinking his wine or medicine in a melancholy way, looking gloomy and mysterious. There's always something about a male character in a Chinese drama sitting somewhere alone with a bottle of wine into his hands, pensively lamenting something, reminiscing about the past... THEY LOOK SO GOOD WHEN THEY DO THAT, I swear it, it gets me every time.

At this rate I think I have a type and it's not exactly the healthiest one either.

Rarely. I used to all the time, when I didn't get very many comments and I knew most of the fandom (when I was writing for Discworld) and then All In became VERY unexpectedly popular, and keeping on top of responding to comments just became impossible and I fell out of the habit. If someone asks a specific question or challenges something I have written I will respond but that's it.

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I don't often write angsty endings, but Soulmate Words and Solemn Promises is a "your soulmates last words to you are written on your skin" AU so. that was pretty much fucking guaranteed to be bleak as all fuck.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I pretty much exclusively write happy endings haha but I think special shoutouts have to go to the ends of All In and Harmony is the Value

Do you get hate on fics?

I have done before - the VC fandom is pretty catastrophically toxic, so I wasn't surprised to get hate on those fics, and I think I got one personal visitation from the infamous Xiyao Troll?

No, not really... though I am currently working on a secret project with @eleanorfenyxwrites that has changed that 👀

I think the only direct crossover I've been involved with are the les trekables fics I wrote with @dotsayers

I've had people ask if they can translate my work but I don't think any of the translations ever got posted, that I'm aware of...

I don't feel like it's fair to say because I love them all equally, my brain just fixates on different ones at different times 😆

I've actually made a rule for myself where I only post stuff once I've finished writing it to specifically avoid this!

I'm gonna say... dialogue, and exploring character emotions

What are your writing weaknesses?

I really struggle with action scenes, and with describing backdrops or props further than, like, The Vibes. where are the characters? they're in a room, don't worry about it.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I've done little phrases or words in other languages (french for VC, and honorifics for CQL) but I wouldn't be confident going further than that

All In will always have a special place in my heart because it reminds me of @spicyshimmy-blog 💜 the While There Are Green Hills, There Will Be Wood To Burn trilogy took about three full years to write and I am HUGELY proud of it, and Where There's A Will, There's A Road is my first fic to get podfic'd so I like to listen to it all the time, which has definitely made it one of my favourites!

Forgive me if this is incoherent as I'm half asleep after 2 all-nighters and lying in bed. One of the characters I don't talk about much despite really liking is Arthur, and honestly, that's because my feelings towards the UK are so complicated, but let's forget all that and zoom in on Arthur the character first! disclaimer: it's as I see him, based on canon but with certain other elements etc etc it's personal bias yk

I honestly don't know that much about British history outside of the basics, but! Concerning both relations to history and also characterization in general, Arthur is such a fascinating little man to me. He just really hits the spot, his little contradictions, when interacting with Wang Yao in my fav era (late 1800s to early 1900s) he's so arrogant but you start to see weariness creep in as well esp when he gets irritated or riled up, the way his old inferiority complex from being beaten up and the former runt of Europe seeps into his 'gentleman' facade, etc. He's a little plain and it shows in his design which I think is really cute, his spiky hair that's not super soft, big eyebrows, can't escape his rough and tumble past no matter how much he slicks back his hair. He's really Someguy but also not at all, I love the whole tsundere thing actually! I don't necessarily like it exaggerated too much but I love this guy who does feel things but would rather die than show it clearly, who keeps a distance from those he loves as well as those he hates, and who pays too much attention to this concept of etiquette and pride and respectability but also feels things so strongly it becomes hard to cover up. Tying into this weird relationship with showing emotion is the stiff upper lip thing. He can be foolhardy too, he becomes quite good at planning and is certainly less rash than Alfred but he's definitely not the inherently patient type, his pride overwhelms his common sense at times, his little tantrums when he's frustrated or angry that seem to contradict his determination not to show open emotion (but i suppose it's the 'anger isnt weak emotion' type beat. v toxic) his penchant for smugness when things go his way. He's not very glamourous and filled with little contradictions struggling against each other and he's somehow both suitably elegant and intimidating, while also being an absolute pathetic fool of a man, and it's great it's great love that
