on couches and the universe
(buddie) (683 words) (6x11 coda) in which margaret buckley is NOT allowed to be the solution to the couch problem <3
The couch doesn’t fit.
It takes everything Buck has not to burst out laughing, because of course it doesn’t. Why would it? It’s not like his Mom had painstakingly measured the entire apartment while Buck watched bemusedly from the chair. Oh wait.
“I just don’t understand,” Margaret says, hands on her hips. “It should be perfect!”
“Maybe it’s a sign from the universe,” Buck says with a half grin. “I have to find my own couch.”
Margaret frowns. “I can find the right one for you, I know it.”
“Look, Mom, it’s fine, I’ll get one when I get one. It’s not like it was with my leg, I can get up the stairs just fine.”
Margaret swallows and looks away uncomfortably. “Evan—” she starts, but then doesn’t say anything to follow.
Buck grimaces. Instinctively, he wants to apologize for bringing it up, but— the voice in his head that apparently turns into bizarro Bobby when he’s in a coma tells him he’s got nothing to apologize for, and he’s pretty sure it’s right.
After a moment of tension, Margaret sighs. “I’d better go call the store to return this.” She steps back into the kitchen, away from the couch that refused to wedge itself in place under the stairs.
Buck hesitates a moment, then steps out on the balcony to make a call of his own.
“Hey,” Eddie says, soft and warm and familiar, and in a moment all the tension Buck hadn’t realized he was carrying seeps from his shoulders.
“Hey yourself,” Buck replies, leaning against the wall and looking out at the city.
“How’s the new couch?” Eddie asks, and this time Buck doesn’t even try to stop himself from laughing.
“It doesn’t fit,” he chuckles.
“And that’s funny because…?” Eddie asks. Buck care hear the bemused smile he’s sure adorns Eddie’s lips.
“Because!” Buck says, gesturing wildly. “The universe or something.”
Eddie is silent for a few moments. “You know,” he says, a little more deliberately, “I think I’m starting to buy into this universe you keep talking about.”
Buck gasps dramatically. “You, Eddie Diaz, a believer?”
Eddie huffs out a small breath. “Yeah, well, something obviously has it out for you and couches,” he says.
“Nah,” Buck replies. “It’s just helping me keep the space open for the right one.”
“Maybe so,” Eddie says softly.
A comfortable silence envelops them, interrupted only by the distant sounds of traffic. Buck’s pretty sure he could stay like this for hours, quiet, resting, listening to Eddie breathe on the other end of the line. His mind wanders, though, and within minutes, Buck speaks again.
“I think I need to ask my parents to go home,” he admits, glancing back at the sliding glass door to make sure it’s closed.
“Why?” Eddie asks, not judgmental or even particularly curious. Just… giving him space.
Buck chews on his lower lip. “In my dream, my parents were there, right? And it was—it was almost happy, you know?”
Eddie hums an acknowledgement but says nothing.
“And they’re trying, I know they are,” Buck continues. “But there’s all this history, and I can’t help but think they wouldn’t be here if they hadn’t been, you know, already here.”
“You’re allowed to need some space,” Eddie reminds him gently.
Buck ducks his head and smiles. “I know,” he says. “I think I just—need some time to separate this version of my parents from the ones in my head.”
“Well, you might not have a couch,” Eddie says, “but I do. It’s yours, no questions asked.”
Buck laughs softly, “I might just take you up on that,” he says.
“You’d better,” Eddie says. “I know it’s only been a day, but Christopher’s been vibrating out of his skin asking to see you.”
“I miss him too,” Buck says. “I think—I can’t just run away from this, you know? But uh—”
“After,” Eddie says, when he doesn’t complete the thought. “Talk to them, and then as soon as you’re done—we’ll be waiting.”
“I’ll be there soon,” Buck says softly.
“I know you will.”

✨ 2023 writing round-up ✨
Edit: must have accidentally copied someone else’s intro without realising 😂
I’ve posted 57,184 words to ao3 this year (I also started in June) I have almost the same number of words in my wips 😭 This year has been crazy and this fandom has provided me so much joy, not just writing but getting to know all my wonderful mutuals <3 The 911 brainrot is strong and I can’t wait to see what 2024 brings!
I posted the more words to Ao3 this year than I have in any other previous year, which is wild since I only really started writing again in June. It's wild the choke hold that Eddie Diaz and Evan Buckley have on me. Here's my writing round-up for 2023 :)
June
I posted my first fic on June 20 and in nine days I had posted 6 fics 😂
I ain't proud of all the punches that I've thrown
Teen | 826w
Rage, like a broken window to an oxygen-deprived room that’s already in flames, explodes within him and almost takes him out. He resists the urge to slam the phone’s receiver into the wall until it's just fragments of plastic that dig into the palm of his hand, drawing blood. He breathes through his nose and then out of his mouth and repeats that until he gets himself under control. or Eddie's in Jail and he almost calls Buck.
You with the dark curls, you with the watercolour eyes
Mature | 1.6k
Blue eyes meet his, washed out in the morning light, he's like the watercolour paintings they had seen in the museum with Chris last week, soft and fuzzy around the edges, with just a hint of bright colours. Blue like the sky, splashes of pink at his eyebrow and lips. Those lips, that still looked bruised from last night. Or The morning after Buck and Eddie finally get together.
asking all these questions, just to be polite, while dying inside
Teen | 1.2K
But Eddie looks good, like really good, like how is anyone allowed to look that good in jeans and a green henley? His hair is all fluffy which means he hasn't put any product in it, he wonders if it still smells like the green apple conditioner that Eddie and Chris liked to use. There's a new wrinkle at the corners of his eyes like he's been smiling a lot these last few years and it shouldn't hurt this much to know that Eddie's been happy without him but it does. or Buck dreams of what it would be like to lose Eddie as a friend and run into him five years down the line and having to ask all of these stupid questions just to be polite while dying inside.
Tapping Morse Code into your heart
Explicit | 2.8k
Buck can’t keep still. It was a known fact that some part of Buck’s body will be in constant motion, and when it wasn’t? You should be concerned. A bouncing knee, an elastic band wound around his fingers, head bopping, fingers tapping Morse code he had learned on a whim after Eddie told him that he knew it. So Buck can’t stay still even if his life depended on it. Or in this case an orgasm. And Eddie-well Eddie is annoyed. or Buck and Eddie use Morse Code to communicate when words can't be said.
I want you to be selfish with me
Mature | 4.6k
When Eddie gets the call is 12.24 am. He’s lying awake in bed, trying to avoid spiralling but failing when his phone lights up, vibrating and blaring out the stupid song Buck had changed his ringtone to. “So you know it's me calling.” Eddie didn’t say that he always knew it was Buck calling even without the ringtone. Buck’s the only one that calls him this late at night, it's also the only time Buck calls since he prefers to text during the normal hours of the day. Eddie sighs, dragging a hand over his face, looks like trying and failing to fall asleep is going to have to wait. His other hand reaches for his phone, answering. “Buck,” He says, he can hear a lot of background noise, voices and music, so it’s not an ‘I woke up from a nightmare and I needed to make sure you're still alive’ call. “Eddie,” Buck slurs, drunk, “Eds, Eds, did I wake you?” or Buck called Eddie while drunk and Eddie ends up using some of his military training to save him.
You bring me comfort
Teen | 4.1k
Frank asks him “When was the last time you were hugged?” He’d hugged Chris that morning. “No, I mean the last time you were held” He didn’t really understand the difference, he regularly hugs Christopher, Tia Pepa, Abuela, and even a few quick hugs with Buck which never seem like enough. “Not you holding someone else, comforting someone else, just purely someone holding you because you need it” Eddie thinks back to the hospital, thinks back to seeing Shannon’s body on the gurney, the way Bobby’s arms had gone around him and held him up. “When Shannon died, Bobby, my Captain, he-he hugged me” It had been so long ago, years and before that? He couldn’t remember. Frank doesn’t exactly give him homework called “get hugged” but he suggests that Eddie should ask for want he wants next time he needs comfort instead of putting on the sweater. or Eddie is touched starved and just needs a hug instead, instead he has his sweater.
July
I Can See You
Teen | 3.1k
Eddie gets out of his truck and watches as Buck sings along to whatever song is playing in his car. It’s captivating but Eddie thinks many things about Buck are. He’s unashamed as he belts, singing into his phone like it’s a microphone. Buck looks up and makes eye contact with Eddie, who can feel his lips stretched in a smile. Buck smiles back, continuing his impromptu show, now singing to Eddie even though he can’t hear it from across the parking lot. Eddie watches for a minute or so before walking over to Buck’s jeep, drawn to him like he has his own gravitational pull, stronger than the earth's as if Buck is the only reason Eddie hasn’t gone floating off into space yet. As he gets closer he can hear the muffled music, he can see the blue of Buck’s eyes as they gleam from joy. Eddie can barely make out the words: I see you, I see you, baby, Oh, baby OR Buck’s a Swiftie and he makes Eddie listen to Speak Now (TV) and accidentally confesses his love because of the song I Can See You
Alright, Cowboy, Go Get 'Em
Explicit | 17k | 2/3
“What can I get you?” The bartender asks as Eddie slides up to the bar. “Whiskey, neat, thanks” “Make that two” A voice says from beside him, Eddie turns and takes in a black leather protection vest that’s undone over a bright blue button-down shirt. He drags his eyes up, over pale skin, an adam apple and stubble to blue eyes a shade or two lighter than his shirt. His white cowboy hat is back on, it makes the pink mark on his eyebrow stand out. There's a small smirk on his lips that Eddie does not linger on. “Evan Buckley,” He says, holding out his hand. Eddie clears his throat, “Eddie Diaz” He says shaking the offered hand, noticing the callous and firm grip before pulling back. OR What if Eddie had never left El Paso? What if Buck became a bull rider after being a ranch hand? After Eddie gets back from Afghanistan and Shannon divorces him some of his high school buddies decided to drag him to the rodeo to cheer him up. I don’t think they had in mind Eddie getting blown by a rodeo star behind the stable but it sure did improve his mood. Now Eddie can’t get Buck out of his mind and he might just become a rodeo regular.
Under the Guise of Violence
Explicit | 3k
Buck was kneeling. Not in the way Eddie had too frequently fantasised about, though from the lascivious smile on his face, maybe in a way Buck had fantasised about. There’s a cut above his right eyebrow, it’s a reflection of his pink birthmark, his nose is broken and blood-half dried-is trailing down to those plump pink lips. Eddie has to force himself to drag his eyes away. His hand tightens on the pummel of his sword, careful of its sharp edge that rests against the fragile skin of Buck’s neck. He doesn’t know how they got here. OR Eddie can't touch Buck unless it's to hurt him, after a sparring match Buck confronts him and it leads them back to Eddie's bedroom.
August, September and October I didn't post any fic- I was moving country and could not finish a fic to save my life 😂
November
nicknames, supernova similes and the family we make
Teen | 800w
“Bobby, I’d like you to meet, Robin Buckley-Diaz,” Buck looks at the small bundle in his arms, bright blues staring right back up at him, “This is your Grandpops.” Bobby clears his throat, “Grandpops?” Buck looks up at the man who’s been more of a dad to him than his own blood, who had been by his bedside at every hospital visit and helped him grow up into the man he is today, “If that’s okay with you?” OR Bobby and Athena meet Buck and Eddie's new baby girl.
let me cradle your body (be a safe place to rest)
General | 1.9k
“Seat theif,” Buck pouts, “Where am I supposed to sit?” He asks and look, if he purposely makes his eyes all big and puts a little whine in his voice in a deadly combination that usually has Eddie folding to his whims that it’s between him and the universe okay? “Here,” Eddie says, patting his thigh and it shortcircuits Buck’s brain for longer than it probably should’ve. Eddie doesn’t actually mean that, he’s just messing with Buck right? Because as much as they’ve been accused of practically sitting on each other, they’ve never actually sat in each other’s laps. Buck opens and closes his mouth a few times before deciding that if Eddie is pulling his chain then he’s going to regret it and if it’s being earnest then it probably is comfier than the floor and better than being squeezed into a too-tight spot. “Okay,” Buck says, Eddie offers him a smile and his hand, as if daring him to do it. Buck takes the offered hand and Eddie pulls Buck onto his lap. OR What starts out as a normal 118 gathering ends with Buck sitting on Eddie's lap.
December
even when the heat breaks I’m still yours
Explicit | 6.1k
Eddie has many regrets in his life, lying on the floor of the cabin in the middle of a heat wave with his six foot two best friend pressing into his side while they were both trying to stay cool under the pitiful breeze of the ancient ceiling fan had the possibility to be high on that list. He turns his head to be confronted with a tattooed and freckle-covered shoulder, he can’t remember when they decided to strip down to their boxers -he might have suggested it after Buck’s third shirt had been soaked with sweat and had been clinging to his muscles in a dangerously distracting way- but at the time it had seemed like a good idea, he wasn’t sure about that now considering this was the third time in the last hour that he’s found himself turning to stare at the miles of bare skin. OR Buck and Eddie get stuck in a cabin during a heatwave, they finally take the next step and fuck nasty on the floor.
We might end up real close
Explicit | 2.2k
“Said you wanted us to bond. We might end up real close.” When Buck said those words to Bobby just merely few hours ago, it had been a joke about how if the bomb went off they would be reduced to blood, shards of bone and flesh, mixed so together that you wouldn’t be able to tell them apart without DNA testing. He hadn’t meant it in the way that it was now true with Eddie balls deep in him as he fucks Buck against the tile wall of the firehouse showers, both of them still fully dressed, uniform pants undone and pulled only down to mid-thigh in their haste. Though he thinks maybe Bobby wouldn’t be too surprised by this development given Buck’s recent past. OR the 2x01 Rewrite where Buck and Eddie fuck after removing the bomb.
They don’t know (your name is already mine)
General | 7.6k | 3/4
“Sir, can you tell me your name?” Buck opens his mouth, his tongue feels like lead, “E-ed-” “Ed? Is your name Ed?” Buck shakes his head and winces when he sends a spike of pain through his head. Hands pull at his shirt and he feels the cold metal of scissors as they cut his brand new shirt. He’s supposed to be wearing that to tomorrow's Christmas Eve dinner. Eddie had said the colour makes his eyes pop. “He’s wearing dog tags…Eddie Diaz,” Buck moans, blackness at the edges of his vision seeps in, he tries to blink it away, no, they need to call Eddie, “It’s okay Eddie, we’ve got you,” is the last thing he hears before the darkness takes over. OR Buck gets in a car accident on Christmas Eve Eve and the only ID he has on him is Eddie's dog tags. A case of mistaken Identity, a trip to the hospital and a Christmas Surprise.

Buck was supposed to come home in a couple months, pretty close to Eddie's birthday. He was finishing his tour with the Navy and then they'll get their happy ending. That's how it was supposed to go.
Then two officers showed up at Eddie's door with a flag and thanking his husband for serving their country.
And everything changed.

"I think— I think we should go to therapy. Together." Eddie says one night and takes Buck completely by surprise. "Therapy? Together?" "Yeah, like, couple's therapy or something. Frank told me he can recommend someone for us." "Eddie…" Buck says slowly, as if he's trying to explain the hardest math problem in the universe to a five year old. "We're not, uh— We're not a couple." "No, I know." Eddie frowns and looks down, fidgeting with the beer in between his hands. "But we're partners." He says, this time a lot lower that Buck barely hears it. "Right?"

"Hey, how do you feel about an impromptu romantic date at a fancy restaurant with the love of your life?" He asks once he hears the call has been picked up. There's silence on the other line for longer than it's normal and Buck is about to check if Hen hang up on him when someone finally speaks— and Buck suddenly feels sick to his stomach. "Okay." Says the voice that is certainly not Hen's. The voice that's been haunting Buck's every dream for forever. "Eddie?" Buck chokes out, stuttering and hoping to God it's not him. "Yeah…" Of course it is..Buck looks up at his ceiling again, cursing the damn universe and its awful sense of humor. He's sure its laughing at him at this point. "Why? D-Did you mean to call someone else?"
or: Buck's date cancels but he has already made the restaurant reservation, so he decides to call Hen and ask if she'd like to take Karen there. He dials the wrong number. It all works in the end.

Authors notes: I told myself I would be better this year and write stuff ahead or in the day but here I am 11 minutes before midnight posting this. All mistakes are my own, this is a dumb little fic but it's a warm up. Can we go 31/31 this year?
You had always prided yourself on having a strong stomach when it came to being a paramedic. Dislocations? Easy. Blood, vomit and other bodily fluids? Didn’t phase you in the slightest. At one point during your training you thought you had no squicks and prided yourself on it until one day you encountered a particularly gruesome injury where you were called out to a factory to a worker with a foreign object in the eye. As soon as you saw the patient you felt the blood drain from your face and the next thing you knew you were on the floor surrounded by your colleagues’ concerned faces.
Thankfully, since joining the 118 you hadn’t come across any injuries of that sort. No one knew about your past dealings with it and for all you knew you had outgrown that response, after all you were new to the job and still in training on that last encounter. That was, however, until today.
The team had been dispatched to a medical call in a quiet suburban neighborhood. You hadn’t gotten a lot of detail from dispatch, just that the wife was clearly distressed and the husband had some sort of facial injury. When you arrived on scene, Bobby ordered you and Chim to assess the patient while he calmed down the wife and Buck and Eddie were on crowd control and were there as an extra set of hands.
There was a man on the floor, clutching his hand to his face, blood seeping through his fingers and clearly in distress. Chim knelt by the man’s side as you opened the kit and rummaged for supplies to stem the bleeding. You weren’t prepared for what happened next as the man lifted his hand away from his face. The sight made your stomach churn.
Taking a deep breath, you tried your best to maintain your composure and keep your mind focussed on the job at hand as Chim began his assessment, asking questions and reassuring the man. Unable to hold back any longer and feeling the nausea rising and your vision tunnelling you had to excuse yourself before you made a scene.
“Hey Chim, can you take over for a minute? I just need to grab something from the ambulance.”
Thankfully, Chim didn’t seem to notice your response, too engaged with the patient to have noticed your reaction. He nods, easily taking over as you hurried away from the scene towards the safety of the ambulance, attempting to keep your breathing under control.
Your heart is pounding in your chest as you try to calm yourself down and get the images out of your head. The memories of the scene you’d just encountered mixing with the memories of your training days. Your stomach twisted again in response.
Unbeknownst to you, Buck and Eddie had seen you move away from the scene and towards the ambulance. They didn’t miss how unsteady you were on your feet as you placed a hand on the side of the ambulance to steady yourself. The pair exchanged worried glances before they made their way over to your side to check if you were okay.
You’re so focused on keeping yourself upright and taking deep breaths that you barely hear Buck and Eddie approaching before your vision begins to grey around the edges and your body sways once more as your legs give out from beneath you.
Strong arms wrap themselves around you, saving you from hitting the ground as they keep you steady and in place.
“Easy now. I’ve got you,” Eddie asks, his brow furrowing in concern as he sees how pale and shaky you look.
You hold onto him tightly, fighting to maintain consciousness as he and Buck carefully help you towards the ambulance and sit you down on the edge.
“Y/N? Are you alright?” Buck asks as he kneels in front of you.
Eddie joins him, reaching out to take your wrist and feel your radial pulse. You can feel how fast it’s thrumming against his touch, hating how much of a reaction this is getting out of you.
With the initial shock over with, shame quickly replaces that feeling and you can feel the tears threatening to spill over.
“Take a deep breath for me sweetheart. You’re alright. We’ve got you,” Eddie reassures.
You do as he says and take a deep breath, trying to push down the nausea that still threatened. “It’s the eye thing…I just can’t…”
Tears began to spring at the back of your eyes from the distress and embarrassment of the situation. “I’m sorry. You must think I’m an idiot. I’m a paramedic, I should be able to handle this.”
“Hey, it’s okay.” Eddie reassures you with a gentle squeeze of your hand. “We all have our thing we can’t stand. For me it’s field amputations. I don’t know, I just can’t after the war.”
“Okay, but that’s understandable,” you begin, “mine sounds dumb in comparison.”
“You should hear the first time I ever encountered airway secretions on the job. Let’s just say I didn’t handle it well either and Chim followed me around for the next week making suctioning noises and whispering ‘sputum’ in my ear.”
You burst out laughing, feeling a little lighter about the situation. “Secretions? Seriously Buck?”
Buck smiled back, helping to keep the mood light, “listen, I can handle almost every emergency but something about that sound just gets me.”
Eddie joined in unable to contain his laughter and you felt the tension and worry you had from earlier slowly melt away.
“See, we all have things that just gross us out and things we can’t handle. It’s part of being human and part of the job,” Eddie reassures.
“I’ll tell you what, I’ll handle the eye stuff from now on if you handle the suctioning and airway?” Buck held out his hand for you to shake.
You let out another laugh, and took his hand, nodding in agreement, “Deal.”
With that, Buck left you and Eddie alone, taking your place in helping Chim with the patient, feeling a little lighter and a little better about not being able to handle everything this crazy job threw at you.

summary : Buck gives one look to Eddie and brings one arm to his chest where his talkie is, “118, this is firefight Buckley and Diaz, we need assistance.” He grumbles into the machine. After more than five seconds with no answers, he goes again, “118” this time his voice is more tense, “This is firefighter Buckley and Diaz and we need help.” He begs through gritted teeth, “Anyone hear me? WIP Wednesday
Tagged by the wonderful and amazing @prince-buck-diaz, @homerforsure, @heartbeatdiaz , @spotsandsocks and @wikiangela. Thank you!
Alright ya'll, so I am still working on this fic, but writing is going to slow down a bit this week because I finally scheduled shadowing hours for the program I'm applying for. So may not see much from this fic the next few tag days. But as it has been for awhile, here is NFL Buck!
“I talked to Christopher. He gave the gist of what went down during his visit to your firehouse today and a bit of an attitude.” Evan tells him with a dejected expression. Eddie draws a rough hand down his face, “Yea, he didn’t like that we had to have the talk again, add in teenage hormones and general need for rebellion, we get broody Chris.” “You think he said too much to your co-workers.” A distressed groan rips out of him, “They’re so damn nosy and I understand they’re curious and want to get to know me.  That I have this air of mystery around me with the whole cryptic boyfriend thing.  And I’ve tried to warn them off, I tried to explain that you-that we like our privacy. Then Christopher came, and I know they were just being nice and wanting to get to know him. But then Chimney caught him watching the training camp interview you did, and Chris loves to brag about you, loves to tell people he is your biggest fan.” “No bigger fan than him. And I’m his.” Buck interrupts with a delicate smile. Eddie softens a bit at that, “We both are.” He sighs, “It took Bobby using his Captain voice to get everyone to calm down, shut up and back off.  Lunch got too awkward for Chris and Carla to stay and then we had the talk, which upset him, so he ignored all my goodnight texts and calls. Carla had to put me on speaker phone so he would at least hear me say it. So, I feel like the worst dad in the world right now and all I want besides a hug from my son, is you.”  He needed Buck physically here with him, to sooth him and talk him through his stress and anger.
Hope you enjoyed!

Buddie Week Day 4 - Eddie calling Buck 'Evan' - falling asleep on each other - "Because I fucking love you!
read on ao3 here
“Because I fucking love you”  Buck shouted at Eddie. The second he processed exactly what came out of his mouth he felt the anger drain out of him. This was somehow always how it was going to go. When things were easy, he could keep his love under wraps. It still spilled out sometimes, but the friendship lines had been blurred long ago. Their casual domesticity had been through enough that Eddie could overlook the love overspill as just their friendship. But now, there was no real going back. It was out there, and Buck would have to deal with the consequences.
It hadn’t been Buck’s intention to end up in the hospital again. Given the choice however, he would do it all again. He and Eddie had been sent back into the crumbling building for one final sweep. There were reports that there should still have been a family in the building. Neither man knew at the time, but the family wasn’t even in the state at the time of the fire. The two had searched where they could before the orders were given to evacuate. Eddie ran in front, with Buck close behind in. The creaks were ominous in the building. Buck only saw the ceiling starting to cave because he was further back. There wasn’t enough time to do anything. He knew Eddie would be mad at him. It was a risk Buck was willing to take to be sure Eddie was safe.
Buck sped up and shoved Eddie outside the door. He watched for a split second as Eddie stumbled but made it out. His relief was brief, as Buck felt one of the ceiling beams hit the side of his helmet and fall onto his shoulder. He had broken enough bones to know that he definitely broke his collarbone and potentially his shoulder. He considered himself lucky that it was only the end of the beam and he could get himself out. He did know if he hadn’t shoved Eddie, odds were Buck would not have been hit, but Eddie would have.
It didn’t matter to Buck if he got hurt. What was another broken bone. It was more time off work, probably some grueling physical therapy, a session with a therapist to remind everyone he was fine. Yes, Buck did always calculate the risks, it was just he would rather he get hurt and see all of his friends safe.
The two made it far enough from the building they could have a second to recover without worrying about the building. They both ripped off their helmet and mask, taking deep breathes. Buck saw the anger brewing behind Eddie’s eyes. He knew Eddie would be mad at him. Eddie almost always was a little mad when he got hurt, especially when it was at the expense of someone else. Safest course of action here was to avoid the confrontation now. He could handle being yelled at once they were off the scene, once he knew for sure Eddie would be safe from the building. He could never explain to Eddie why he did what he did. There was no way to express his feelings on it that were healthy. It was something he should eventually address, but he sometimes just wanted Eddie to hear him out. Let him know that yes, he knew he was important to those around him but it was always just easiest for Buck to be the one getting injured. He could tell Eddie was about to start yelling, but their radios crackled to life.
“Buckley, Diaz. Come in.” Bobby’s voice came through the speaker.
Before Eddie could even think of saying anything back, Buck made sure to speak first. “We both made it out before it came down Cap. Whole place was empty, so the family must have gotten out a different exit. We’re heading back your way.”
Buck started walking back towards the trucks. They were on the far side of the building, so it wouldn’t be the quickest walk. He did not need to say anything to Eddie, knowing he would be following behind. The dull throbbing on his right side was getting worse. He could have told Bobby over the radio, but it wouldn’t have done any good. Hen and Chim could take care of it when he got back to the ambulance, as long as there weren’t any patients who needed it more. He was pretty sure he could help still. He couldn’t man the hose, but he could be in charge of the water flow. He only needed one arm for that.
“Buck. Stop. You can’t keep doing this!” Eddie shouted. He still hadn’t started to follow Buck yet. Buck kept walking. He really did not want to have this conversation right now. Based on the heavy footfalls, he didn’t get much of a choice in that. Eddie was suddenly in front of him, blocking his way forward. “We would have made it out fine, you didn’t need to risk yourself to make sure I got out.”
“We both got out fine, we need to get back to Cap to go help with the rest of the fire.” Buck was trying to keep his tone level, but he could tell he probably had a concussion. Between Eddie’s voice and all of the other sounds that came with a structure fire he knew what the pounding in his head meant. He tried to step around Eddie, but the older man moved into his way. “Eddie, we have to get back.”
“No Buck. This is the third time in the last week you’ve done something like this. I can’t keep standing by as you just keep putting yourself in harms way.” Eddie was trying to reason with him, Buck knew that. He just didn’t want to hear it. Not now at least. He could let Eddie be upset once they were back with the team.
“We have a job to do. You can yell at me later.” Buck started to walk around Eddie, but there was suddenly a searing pain in his arm. He stifled down his cry he wanted to let out, but a whimper slipped past his lips. He prayed that Eddie didn’t hear it over the other sounds. However, his luck for the day had run out.
“Are you injured? Did something catch you? Why didn’t you say anything?” Eddie’s anger turned to worry. He tried to start undoing Buck’s turnout jacket so he could inspect whatever damage it was hiding.
Buck pushed his hands away. Eddie looked hazy, but it must have been smoke from the fire. “I’m fine Eddie, Cap’s going to send someone to look for us if we spend much longer here and it’s not safe for them.”
“You always say how you hate when I’m hurt. Why can’t you understand it might be the same for me. Please just let me look.” Eddie was pleading now.
Buck got it, normally. He knew that Eddie cared. He wanted Buck to be safe. It was one of the many things he loved about Eddie. But he was in pain, and he could feel all the adrenaline crashing completely only making it worse. If he was able to think straight, he would have realized that the concussion was worse than he thought. It was a real miracle Eddie wasn’t picking up on the symptoms.
“I know it isn’t the same Eddie, and you know it.” Buck spoke through gritted teeth. An wave of nausea came over him. He swallowed the bile down. He couldn’t read the emotions in Eddie’s eyes now. Normally he could. He knew what he was looking at, but his head was fuzzy. It was just outside his grasp.
“What do you mean it isn’t the same? We’re partners. We look out for each other.” Eddie’s tone was soft. That was a bad sign. It meant he knew something was up. Buck was not going to be able to hide his injury. At this point he didn’t plan on it, but he just wanted to be away from the roaring fire.
“Because I fucking love you”  Buck shouted at Eddie. Buck’s anger drained out of him, and so did his consciousness. He remembered falling to the ground. He could hear Eddie yelling at him again.
“Evan!”
Buck didn’t remember much besides flashes of the ambulance, and the bright white lights of the hospital. When he finally came back to some level of consciousness, he didn’t want to open his eyes. He did slowly crack them open. The lights in his room had been significantly dimmed. He felt floating in the way that indicated he was on the heavy painkillers. He didn’t love being on them, but from what little he remembered it was probably best to not feel whatever was going on with his shoulder. It was in a hard cast that he could feel wrapping around his torso. Must have been a pretty substantial break.
It was then Buck noticed the figure next to the bed. Eddie’s head was resting right next to his hip on his left. His head was on his left arm, his right resting on Buck’s thigh. There was still soot in his hair, indicating he stayed after the fire. Buck was shocked he hadn’t woken when Buck did. He was usually a light sleeper, especially in the hospital. The edge’s of his thoughts got hazier and hazier, probably because he needed more sleep. He laced his fingers with Eddies before falling back into his slumber.

so i had a dream earlier during my nap, and i really need to write it down or something because when i woke up i went feral (i really should be asleep 'cause it's 12 am and i have to get up at 6:30 but here you go).
It's been a week for Eddie. Work, Chris' school schedule, and these odd, reoccurring dreams about all of his loved ones dying, one by one. First Chimney, then Bobby, Athena, Maddie, Hen, Chris, and just today, Buck. And what do you know, Buck was right outside of Eddie's room on the couch, and had to be awake when Eddie awoke at 3 am, screaming 'Buck!' and hyperventilating. And that night, Eddie really was thankful for the fact that his kid was somewhat popular, being at a sleepover with his best friends. And, to be honest, Eddie didn't really know what to do when he woke up. He was either gonna go get Buck, cry, or have a panic attack, he guessed, although Eddie Diaz "wasn't one to panic".
______
"Go get 'em cowboy." Eddie said, patting Buck on the shoulder. The other man turned around and smiled at him that beautiful, bright smile, showing off all of his pearly whites. God, did Eddie love that man. He was just so perfect, so sweet, so handsome, so...Buck. A few minutes later, Buck was at the very edge of the ladder, looking up at the sky. Eddie couldn't hear or see Buck say anything, but he saw the sky turning blue in that one spot above Buck and thought, "What the heck is that?" It's like Eddie blinked and Buck was dangling in the air and he was on the ground. His back hurt and was probably bruised, but he didn't care. He only cared about Buck, who wasn't moving. Buck, who looked lifeless by the way he was being put on display for everyone on the ground like some kind of animal. "Buck!", was the next thing Eddie heard coming from himself. His throat was gonna be wrecked later, but he didn't care. He had to make sure Buck was okay, even though he probably wasn't by the looks of it. "Buck!", he called out again, now climbing up the ladder at his highest speed, which was pretty difficult with the fact that it was raining. "Buck!", his voice cracked, he slipped, didn't fall though. "Buck!", he kept going, finally reaching the top of the ladder. "Buck! Can you hear me? Buck!", he yelled, trying to pull Buck's rope up to him, trying to get Buck back on the ladder. But the rope started going down, started lowering. "No, Buck! Can you hear me? Buck! Buck!", no response. He kept pulling and the rope kept falling, falling, until- SNAP! The rope broke and Buck fell. For a moment, Eddie wanted to follow him. Throw himself over the railing too. "Buck! Buck! No, Buck!", he yelled, screamed for his best friend. Even with the loud noises and rain pattering all around him, he still could hear the heavy thud when Buck's body hit the ground. "Evan! Evan, no!", Eddie screamed, voice cracking, grip on the rail weakening. He felt his knees buckle, and felt his body hit the ladder. He was sobbing now, rain mixing with tears. "Buck."
______
Eddie awoke with a loud gasp, immediately bursting into tears. "Buck!", he sobbed, calling out for his best friend. He heard a thud hit the floor and heard mumbling, then loud, running footsteps following after. "Buck.", he whispered, tears rolling down his face and sobs taking away his breath. Eddie was shaking now, on the edge of his bed. His door burst open, and he fell with a loud thud. Buck basically leaped over the bed, trying to get to Eddie as quick as possible. "Hey, Eds. Eddie. Eddie! Listen!", but he couldn't. Eddie couldn't move, couldn't breathe. His chest felt tight, heart beating too fast for his liking. "Eddie, you're having a panic attack."
Buck automatically knew what to do since Eddie wasn't cooperating. He grabbed Eddie and placed his head over where his heart was to get the man to listen to it, to match it, to breathe. Eddie had stopped crying now, but the panic attack was still going. "Eds, I need you to listen to me, okay? I need you to breathe." Eddie took in a shuddering breath, and a few more, finally calming down a little. "Good. Good, just breathe, baby. You're doing so good." The pet name slipped out, but Eddie couldn't help but smile. After a few more minutes, Eddie was calm, Buck now holding Eddie safely in his lap, rubbing his back with both hands.
"Wanna talk about it?" Eddie shook his head. "Okay, but what happened? Did you have a bad dream about me?" Eddie nodded. They sat in comfortable silence for a few minutes.
"You died."
It was quiet, but loud enough for Buck to hear it.
"We were back at the call where you got struck, and I tried to pull you back up on the ladder, but you fell, then..."
Buck only squeezed Eddie tighter.
"I'm sorry. But you know that it was just a dream, right? I'm right here, baby. Right here." Eddie was so giddy and warm now, but he was enjoying this moment too much to move, so all he did was smile to himself.
"Baby, huh?"
Buck froze, the hands on Eddie's back stopping. "Buck, if you like me, just say that."
"I love you, Eds. In that way."
Buck lifted Eddie's chin with two fingers, locking their eyes. "I love you too, Buck."
And oh, my God, Eddie was kissing Evan Buckley. The man he'd been pining over for more than two years.
The kiss was soft, tender, passionate. It was everything Eddie thought kissing Buck would be like. Buck pulled back, Eddie definitely not being bothered one bit. "Yeah. I love you, Edmundo Diaz."
"Well I love you too, Evan Buckley." Eddie kissed right over Buck's heart where his head rested and got up, reaching a hand out. Buck got up as well and they both got into the bed, immediately tangling themselves up in each other like it was a routine. Eddie kissed Buck's birthmark, then smiling into Buck's neck. "Talk tomorrow?" Asked Eddie. "Yeah. Talk." They shared another kiss and were out after that.

using this to show a wip that i have no idea will be finished but has been in my head in a while and is inspired by a hallmark movie a friend and i once watched while drunk :D the movie has lived in my mind rent free for years and i've always thought it'd be a good fanfic trope
Buck sits at the outdoor area of the ice cream shop nervously eating his rocky road ice cream. It's been a while since he's gone on a date. Been even longer since he's gone on a date with someone he met on a dating app. But the guy - Eddie Diaz - looks hot and from the profile it seems like they have a lot in common. There are a couple pictures of him in a firefighter uniform so at least they have any crazy calls to compare with. There was also one particularly cute picture of him and what appears to be his kid of him making something in their kitchen. And Buck has always had a soft spot for kids.  He opens the app to see if there's a new message from Eddie. He's not terribly late by any measure. Five minutes isn't going to make him worry he's getting stood up. But the only message greeting him are the last ones from this morning of him confirming that they were still on for their ice cream date -an unusual pick, but hey, Buck likes ice cream, so he isn't going to complain - and Eddie replying, “Slay.”  Also a bit unusual. Buck only hears that type of slang from people in their lower twenties or younger when he's out on calls. Not people in their early thirties like Eddie states in his profile of him. But then again, maybe this guy is chronically online and runs a Tiktok account. He's been tempted to look this guy up, however he's learned from past experiences that stalking a person before a date never goes well. "Buck, as I live and breathe!" a familiar voice calls out. It takes a moment for the voice and the face to register. "Carla?" He hasn't seen her in years. Not since he dated Abby. And wow, isn't that a mess of emotions he doesn't want to unravel. “What-how are you doing? I haven't seen you in forever!” He gets up from his seat to give her a hug that she enthusiastically accepts. “Well, I'm actually here to introduce you to someone,” her eyes sparkle in mischief.  Buck is about to ask her what she's talking about when a kid around thirteen years old walks up in crutches next to her. "Hi Buck! I'm Christopher!” He smiles widely at him.  For a brief moment, Buck panics thinking that somehow he's this child's father. Except the longer he looks at Christopher, he realizes that no, there's no trace of Evan Buckley in him. He looks back at Carla in confusion. "Uhh, sorry. I think there's some mistake. I am here to meet someone, but it's actually-” “My dad,” Christopher interrupts. Buck's eyebrows shoot up to the top of his head from him. OK. Now he's really confused. Carla still looks at him with an amused expression, clearly enjoying the scene before her. He remembers back when he was dating Abby and the three of them would sometimes hang out watching a soap, Carla would have this same look on her face whenever something juicy was happening.  “Eddie. Diaz.” Christopher continue. “You thought you were meeting him, but you're actually here to meet me.” He grins sheepishly as if asking for forgiveness. “Sorry for tricking you, but this was the only way to get my dad a date.”
"Uh, what?" Christopher rolls his eyes. Like Christopher laid out all the clues for Buck and somehow Buck still needed someone to spell it out for him. He turns to Carla and asks, “Since we’re here, can I get some ice cream?” “Sure, Chris. Your usual? Cookies and cream?” “Yeah!” It isn’t until Buck sees Chris’ smile that he realizes what it means for a person to light a room with one. Or, in this case, the outside of an ice cream shop.  Carla leaves and it’s just Buck and Christopher.  “So, explain this to me again?” Christopher sighs. It’s the type of sigh that only a teenager can give. “My dad needs to start dating again but he’s too stubborn.” He looks at Buck imploringly through his red glasses. “He doesn’t think I see how lonely he is, but I can tell. I’m not stupid. I know after what happened with my mom-” he stops, snapping his mouth shut. Buck doesn’t press. He doesn’t know the kid or this Eddie guy. Whatever happened with his mom is his business. Clearly, there’s some pain still there, and Buck’s heart goes out to them.  “I think my dad needs someone. And I think that someone is you.”  He can only blink back at Christopher. That’s…that’s a lot to hear, especially coming from a thirteen year old.  Carla comes back, one bowl of ice cream for Chris and one for her. “So, did you ask him?” She asks Christopher. “Um,” Buck starts. “I just…wouldn’t you rather have a…wouldn’t you want your dad to date a woman instead?”  Both Christopher and Carla look at each other. Then Chris states simply. “No, I think my dad would be happier with a guy,” before going back to his ice cream. “Also Carla knows you and says you’re nice. And I trust Carla.” Buck switches his bewildered gaze to Carla, who only shrugs. “It’s true. I always did like you, Buck.” “Okay, so what’s the plan then? You take me to see your dad and-and see if there’s some connection?” Christopher groans, like Buck still isn’t getting it. “No! That would be too obvious! He’s a firefighter, you’re a firefighter!” When Buck is still waiting for Christopher to continue, Chris mutters something under his breath. Something that sounds like why do I have to do everything? “You go to his work and introduce yourself, duh! He works at station 6.” Buck tries to hide his grin. He does. From the way Carla is chuckling, he doesn’t think he’s succeeding. “Okay, and what makes you think I’m going to do that?” Now Chris is looking at Buck like he’s the dumbest person alive. “Because you liked my dad’s dating profile. And you came here to meet him.”  The kid definitely has a point. And honestly? Buck has done crazier things in his life. Meeting a guy because his kid wants his dad to start dating? Well, what’s the worst that could happen?

Is it me or does it feel like Buck and Eddie were each other's first best friend? Like they've had casual and childhood friends but it feels different with them. They are so devoted and open with each other that it makes them unable to be soft and vulnerable with other people even though they try to. And like the instant they met, they knew their trust would be well placed.
This makes me wonder if they're aware, even partially, that they're friendship is certainly deeper than most, and that there is a possibility for them to become more somewhere down the line.
Dayna, it’s so good to hear from you, lovely! :D *HUGS*
Oh, I full on believe that they’re each other’s first best friend. I think it’s completely supported by everything we know about their history in canon.
For Buck, we see him in ep 405 at the age of 20, a football star, and yet who does he go to when he’s in need? His sister. When he wants to leave, who does he want with him? His sister. Not for a second do we see him being sad about leaving anyone else behind, or feeling like there’s a best friend he has to at least say goodbye to. Then after he leaves, we see him bouncing around between places, never mentioning any significant friend to Maddie in his postcards. Nor do we see anyone like that featured in any of the flashbacks to the key moments of his journey. The one other person we see is some guy who's ready to ditch Buck for a hookup, and who’s only featured in this trip down memory lane because he unintentionally put Buck on the right path to find the 118, his first real family outside of Maddie. But does Buck have a best friend there? In s1, we don’t really see that. He has a dad figure in Bobby, a great friendship with Hen and Chim, but best friend? No. We never see him choosing to hang out outside of work with any of them one on one, just to hang out and fill each other on stuff. Not like we see Hen with Athena, or Chim and Bobby during that season, or Hen and Chim in later seasons. Edmundo Diaz, Buck’s first ever best friend, confirmed.
In 315, we don’t get to see Eddie before Christopher’s birth, but we still can deduce a few things. We know that he’s becoming a father, but no best friend is in sight at the hospital, nor is one even mentioned. Since Eddie at that point still lives where he grew up, that would imply he doesn’t have a best friend from high school he still hangs out with. And again, one isn’t mentioned either, not even when Eddie decides to leave. We also don’t see Eddie, while he’s serving, talking to a best friend about his issues in his home life, not in a phone call to a friend in the States, and not to another soldier in his unit. We know from his interview in 206 that he did enjoy the camaraderie he had in the army, but it seems like that didn’t develop into having an actual best friend at any point. We don’t see one from the army when Eddie is lying there, injured, after he saved the other soldiers from the helicopter, and we also don’t see a best friend when he returns home. Again, not even a mention of one. Evan Buckley, Eddie’s first ever best friend, also confirmed.
So yes, I have no doubt that a part of the reason they’re so oblivious isn’t just that they’re morons, it’s also that they sincerely don’t get how special what they have is. They cared about and trusted each other almost immediately, which is a profound kind of connection. Then they form this beautiful friendship where they’re there for each other right away, and it’s especially lovely since neither one of them has any experience with being another person’s best friend. But you can see how naturally they fit into that role for each other. But then they become fully partners, they share with each other everything, including a kid! They do that in a way none of the other good friends on the show do. Think of Athena going through her divorce from Michael in s1 and becoming a single mom. Hen’s there for her, but at no point does she become May and Harry’s other parent, or Athena’s partner in raising them, unlike what Buck becomes to Chris and Eddie. They’re fully a family. And they don’t even realize that their bond is so much more intense than a normal friendship. I just love them and I can’t wait for them to realize what they have isn’t simply friendship, and what more they can have as official boyfriends...
Thank you for this ask, I adored it! I hope you’re having a great day, hon! xoxox

get to know your fic writer + WIP Snippet
Tagged by @jesuisici33 @hippolotamus @your-catfish-friend
When did you post your first ever fanfic?
God, I definitely posted 1D fics on Wattpad back in the day, probably in 2013 but I started posting again only in June of this year.
First character(s) you wrote for:
It was probably something 1D related either Larry or an OC/Harry Styles
Main character(s) you’re currently writing for:
Buck and Eddie of course.
Character(s) you haven’t written about before but plan on writing about soon:
Hmmm I don’t have anything planned, I’m just following the hyperfixation but probably someone from the 911 world, maybe Ravi or May?
Fandom(s) you’re currently writing for:
9-1-1
Platonic pairing(s) you currently write for:
Buck and Chris- you can't really avoid Buck as Chris's other parent when writing Buddie. Bobby and Buck- another father-and-son relationship. Eddie and Sophia- the Diaz siblings. The entire firefam I suppose.
Romantic pairing(s) you currently write for:
Buck/Eddie
Your top 3 tags on AO3 (if you post your works on AO3):
Not Beta Read, One Shot and Pre-Relationship Evan "Buck" Buckley/Eddie Diaz
Your current platform where you post your works:
AO3
Snippet of the wip you’re currently working on:
I haven't written in weeks but the inspiration hit tonight so here a bit from a new wip- something for Halloween:
Eddie could hear the creak of the tree outside as the wind tumbled through its branches, someone calling for their dog a few doors down and a motorcycle roaring down the street adjacent to his. He could also hear Buck’s heartbeat, its usual slow and steady thump, thump, thump. Normally he would hear Christopher's soft breaths and fluttering heartbeat from the room down the hall but the house is empty tonight.  He can still taste the tequila from the shots they’d decided were a good idea after finishing their usual six pack. The alcohol warming his stomach, making his limbs feel like they belonged to someone else. Without thinking about it, they place themselves on Buck’s broad chest, his skin a contrast to the dark blue button-up Buck decided to wear tonight. Eddie can feel the sharp intake of breath beneath them and his eyes drag themselves up to Buck’s face. His usually pale skin is flushed ever so slightly, confusion dragging his eyebrows together in a look that would be comical if Eddie wasn’t so damn in love with him.  “Eds?” Buck whispers, so quiet that if it weren’t for his enhanced hearing he wouldn’t have heard it. Eddie doesn’t respond, not verbally at least, he just steps in closer, placing his forehead on Buck’s shoulder, face tucked into his neck. Buck’s hands automatically come up to rest on his arms and Eddie thinks just for a moment that he’s going to push him away but instead, Buck’s fingers curl around his biceps, holding him tightly.  Eddie breathes in, taking in Buck’s scent, citrus, honeycomb and sunshine on snow, it’s just as intoxicating as the alcohol. He’s nuzzling into Buck’s neck chasing that scent before he can stop himself. Buck shudders but doesn’t pull away instead, he bares his neck and tries to relax despite the vulnerable position. Buck has to know he’s not going to hurt him, Eddie could never hurt him.  He opens his mouth and sucks in a breath, “Buck…” his name is as sweet as the taste of him on Eddie’s tongue. It so distracting that he forgets what he is going to say and instead, his hands slide up and one around Buck’s neck and into his hair, using the grip to tilt his head so Eddie has better access. Buck gasps, his fingers digging in painfully before relaxing again but Eddie barely registers it, drowning in Buck’s scent until it was just Buck and only him.  Eddie’s teeth and claws lengthen as the primal need takes control, he manages to loosen his grip enough to avoid piercing Buck, the need to protect is just as strong as the need to mark and claim.

Hurt Evan "Buck" Buckley
Protective Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV)
I am californian and fire season is a genuine thing
AO3 LINK
Usually there's four seasons. Fall, winter, spring, and summer. In California, there's five seasons. Fall, winter, spring, summer, and fire. Fire season comes every year without fail. It's a staple of life you get used to when you live in the sunshine state. However, with climate change, the fires get worse every year. And this year is the worst one in decades.
"118! Listen up!"
Bobby's voice rings through the fire house as silence falls. Everyone gathers around him.
"As you all know, this years fire season has been bad. Our station has been assigned to fight the fires on the southern ridges. This is going to be a five day assignment, but it could go longer. We're expected to arrive by eight AM tomorrow. I know this is short notice, and I apologize, but I just found out about this myself. After shift today, please make any arrangements you need to. If you require assistance or have questions, feel free to ask me. Thank you all."
There's murmuring from the crowd, but it dissipates as everyone scatters.
"I was hoping we wouldn't be dispatched for a bit longer," Eddie sighs.
"It comes every year like clock work. Do you know if Carla can watch Chris?"
"Honestly, Buck, I don't know. I'll call and ask."
"Karen said she could watch the kids after work. Chris can stay with Denny, it'll be like a super-long sleepover," Hen interjects. "So as long as Carla can watch Chris during the day, everything should be fine."
"Hen. Have I ever told you and Karen that you two are the greatest people on the planet?"
"Yes. But hearing it again never hurts."
Hen goes off to chat with Chim, who's calling Maddie. Eddie turns to Buck.
"I was going to invite you over for a movie night tonight, but you'll probably want to pack."
"I've got everything I need at your place. I can throw it in my travel bag. Plus, I promised Chris I would make Bobby's lasagna tonight."
Eddie has this soft smile on his face. It's one that's reserved solely for Chris and Buck. Hen calls it his 'love-sick smile'. And in all honesty, Eddie knows she's right. He's head over heels for Buck. Has been for years. It's as familiar to him as breathing. Maybe one day he'll tell Buck. But for right now, he doesn't want to risk losing Buck completely. He can't handle that. He just got him back after the lightning strike. He won't lose him again just because he can't keep his feelings in check.
The alarm goes off, spurring everyone into action. Eddie forces himself to clear his mind.
*******************
Buck knows Eddie's kitchen like the back of his hand. Partially because he reorganized it while stressed, but more so because he cooks here more than he ever does in his own home. He spends more time at Eddie's house than he does his own house in general. He's become a staple in the Diaz household. And he'll forever be grateful that they want him here.
"Okay, the lasagna is almost ready. Chris, can you grab the water from the fridge?"
Chris does so, Dodging Eddie as he goes to grab the plates. The timer goes off and Buck grabs the food from the oven. He places it on the table, taking his seat next to Eddie.
"This smells amazing."
"Lucky for you, you're getting the first piece," Buck says as he serves Chris a slice.
They all dig in. They chat about their day. Chris updates them on the gossip from school. It's the domestic moments like these that Buck loves the most.
After dinner, Buck washes the dishes as Eddie dries them. Chris runs off to his room to get into PJs.
"We have to tell him we're being dispatched," Eddie whispers.
"I know."
"I hate leaving him."
"Me too."
He bumps his shoulder into Eddie's, a silent show of support. Eddie smiles at him. They stay like that as they wash the rest of the dishes. Eventually, Chris comes back in, now clad in dinosaur pajamas.
"Hey Chris, before we start the movie, we gotta talk about something really quick."
Chris shoots them a nervous look. Buck quickly assures him it's nothing bad. That seems to relax the boy a bit, but he's clearly still worried.
"You know the fires going on? Buck and I are being sent to go fight them. We'll be gone for a couple days. We have to leave tomorrow. Carla will watch you during the day like usual, and you'll stay with Karen and Denny."
"How long will you be gone?"
"We don't know. Probably about five days. I promise I'll take care of your dad, alright?"
"And I'll take care of Buck. We'll be back before you know it."
Chris nods.
"I'm not worried. As long as you two stay together, you'll both come home," he says confidently.
"Exactly. Now, what movie do you want to watch, mijo?"
*******************
Buck spends the ride to basecamp doing crossword puzzles. Occasionally he'll ask Eddie for help with a question, but on the whole his collection of random knowledge makes the puzzles easy. Eddie passes the time scrolling on his phone. He has a bunch of articles that Buck sent him, so he works his way through those. They're about a variety of different subjects. Buck tends to go on research binges, and he'll send Eddie things he finds interesting. Eddie loves it.
When they arrive, Bobby orders everyone to disembark. The moment Eddie steps outside, he's hit by a wave of smoky air. The sky is a shade of orange. It's apocalyptic. Bobby leads them over to the main tent, where everything is being organized. A woman comes out to meet them. She's rather short, but she exudes intimidating energy. Her salt-and-pepper hair is tied back in a tight bun.
"Hi, everyone. I'm Captain Hestwen. I'm the one in charge here. In a minute, you'll be getting your assignments. Over to the left is the field hospital. That tent right there is the bunks, grab naps whenever you can. A full nights sleep won't happen. Food is at the green tent, and the tent next to that is where we're storing gear. If you need me, I'll be here. I'll be seeing you all later at the briefing."
She heads inside just as Bobby comes out. He starts listing off their different positions.
"Chim, Hen, you're on med. You're going with a team from the 159 to help with evacuations and injuries. Andrews, you're joining the 35. Jefferson, you're going to help with heli-rescue. Diaz, Buck, you two are going out with the 128 to help with search and rescue. I'm staying here to help Captain Hestwen. Keep your radios on. The wind could shift, so I want to make sure I can get in touch with you all if I need to. Stay safe, everyone."
With that, everyone heads to their designated positions. It takes Eddie and Buck a moment to locate the 128. They find the crew resting around a table. There's about four of them. A young man comes up to greet them.
"Buckley and Diaz? I'm Ryan. I'm heading up this crew. That's Teri, Hartley, and Muniz."
"Nice to meet you. Call me Buck."
They all shake hands before heading over to the table. There's a map laid out, marked by red pins.
"Okay. There's a campsite that was right along the fire line. Most of the campers got out, but there's still three missing. There's a teenage girl named Jocelyn who was doing a solo trip, and a young couple, Nick and Theo. The wind is shifting fast, so we need to move faster. There's no way to get a helicopter out in this smoke, so we're taking ATVs down. We need to cover a large distance, so we're going to take different areas. Muniz, you're with me, taking the North campsite. Teri and Hartley, you're taking the east. Buck and Diaz, you're taking the west corner. You'll all get a map. Keep in mind that the fire line will be constantly shifting, so the map may be inaccurate."
Ryan leads them to the ATVs. Buck opts to drive, since Eddie is better at reading maps. It's a skill he picked up in the army. After making sure they're all on the same radio channel, they go their separate ways. Eddie directs Buck along the side trails. The road is thin and rocky. The smoke gets thicker as they head closer to the fire line. Buck can feel it settling on his skin. He calls out all three names, praying that they hear a response.
"To the left! A tent!"
Buck pulls over when he hears Eddie yell. They get out to investigate. There's two sleeping bags, so it must be Nick and Theo's. There's not much of the tent left. It looks like the fire swept through, charring everything in it's path. Buck calls out their names, even though it's unlikely the two men are anywhere nearby. They likely would have run from the fire.
"Let's head further down the trail. My guess is that they ran when the fire came."
Eddie nods in agreement. They climb back in and start to drive again. They see the evidence of the fire all around them. They're getting closer to the fire itself. When Nick and Theo ran, they didn't know the fire line would shift with the wind. They had no idea they were running straight towards it.
"Theo! Nick!"
Eddie's voice is hoarse from the combination of yelling and smoke. Nevertheless, he yells out their names again.
"Down here! Help!"
Buck abruptly stops. They run out of the ATV, heading towards the voice. They end up on a steep ridge. Down below, the two men are sitting. One appears mostly okay, but the other has a badly cut leg. Eddie can see the white of bone from where he's standing.
"The ridge collapsed! We can't get out," one yells.
"Grab the med bag," Buck orders. When Eddie returns, Buck has already scrambled down the ridge. He's putting pressure on the man's wound with the gauze from his pocket. "Throw down a rope! You'll have to pull them up, okay?"
They don't have access to their usual gear. All they have is some rope and carabiners. Eddie ties one end of the rope around a large boulder. He gives it a tug to make sure it's secure. Then he tosses the other end over the ridge, watching to make sure it doesn't get snagged on anything. Buck quickly ties it into a rescue knot.
"Theo, you need to go up. Eddie is going to help you."
"I'm not leaving Nick!"
"I promise I'll take care of him."
"Go," Nick croaks.
Theo hesitates, but grabs onto the rope. Eddie instructs him to put the loops around his legs. Once Theo is secure, Eddie uses all his strength to pull him up. Even with his gloves, the rope bites into his hands. The moment Theo appears over the edge, Eddie pulls him fully to safety.
"Are you hurt anywhere?"
"No. I mean yes, I have some cuts and a sprained wrist, but you need to take care of my boyfriend first, please-"
"Buck's got him. Go get in the ATV, we're going to get you both out of here."
The radio attached to Eddie's chest crackles to life. Bobby's voice comes over the line.
"All search and rescue teams, be advised that the wind is shifting. Fire is rapidly heading west."
Eddie swears. The fire is heading right for them. He can see it in the distance, getting closer with each passing second. They need to get out of here. He runs back to the edge of the ridge and throws the rope back down. Buck helps Nick up, carrying the majority of his weight. Buck has tied a tourniquet just above his wound. With a good bit of help, Nick gets secured to the rope. Buck gives Eddie a thumbs up.
It's when Eddie gets Nick to the top that the ridge collapses, taking the rock and rope with it. Eddie barely grabs Nick in time. Half the ridge falls, boulders tumbling down. He pulls Nick to safety before running over to check on Buck. He breathes a sigh of relief when he sees that Buck is stumbling to his feet.
"You okay?"
"I'm fine. Ankle might be broken though," Buck says. He's leaning heavily on his right side.
Eddie can see the fire getting closer. It'll reach them in only a couple of minutes. He has to get Buck up and out of here fast. Theo has already helped Nick into the ATV. Eddie searches the back for another rope, but there's none. Fuck. Eddie races back to the edge, wary of the fact that the ridge is unstable.
"You need to climb! Can you?"
"I don't think so. Eddie, you need to get Nick and Theo out of here. I'll find a different way up."
"I'm not leaving you."
"The fire is heading this way. You need to go!"
Eddie looks at Nick and Theo. Theo still has a small backpack on.
"Theo! Do you have any rope on you?"
He checks his bag, smiling when he pulls out a thin line. Eddie grabs it, testing its strength. It's enough. It has to be. He finds another hefty boulder and ties one end of the rope around it, making sure it's tightly knotted. He throws the other end down. He can feel the heat emanating from the fast-approaching flames. Buck knots the other end around himself. He looks warily at the flames, now eating through the trees only a few feet away.
Eddie begins to pull. His muscles scream at him, exhausted from all the work, but he ignores the pain. All that matters is getting Buck to safety.
The rope creaks.
It snaps.
Eddie lunges forward, grabbing Buck's hand just in time. The rope drops into the flames below. Eddie tries to pull Buck up, but he gets dragged towards the edge. The only thing holding him in place is the root his foot is lodged in, but that's about to give way too.
"Eddie, you have to let go, I'm going to pull you down with me," Buck begs.
"No," Eddie chokes out through gritted teeth. If he lets go Buck is going to fall. And if the fall doesn't kill him, the inferno waiting below will.
"Chris needs you."
"He needs you too!"
"Tell him I love him, okay? And- and there's notes for everyone. Just in case. They're in a box in my closet. Tell everyone I love them, alright?"
"Buck, please-" Eddie's cut off by his own strangled sob. The root gives way a little more.
"It's okay. I love you, Eddie."
With one last smile, Buck lets go. Eddie watches him fall.

The missing scene from the end of 6x07
"Mr Edmundo Diaz?" Came the slightly tinny voice through the phone.
"Yes," Eddie replied cautiously, "May I ask who's calling?"
"We have you listed as the emergency contact for Evan Buckley?"
Eddie froze. Buck was hurt, again, and once again Eddie wasn't there to help.
"Yes, that's right." He muttered into the phone, "which hospital is he at?"
"Oh." The woman sounded confused, "we aren't a hospital. I'm calling from the Sunset Clinic. Mr Buckley was booked in to donate sperm today but I think something has gone wrong. He's not opening the door and he sounds like he's in pain."
Eddie let out a breath, he could deal with this. Not life and death, as it were, although potentially very embarrassing for everyone involved. He pinched the bridge of his nose,
"I'll be there in 15"
*****
The drive to the clinic was remarkably uncomfortable for a drive by himself. He'd known for all of 24 hours that buck was donating sperm and from what he'd heard of the man before Eddie had arrived at the 118, he seemed to be fully operational so he wasn't completely sure what the problem could be. Pulling into the clinic parking lot, Eddie hopped out of the car and hurried inside.
"Can I help you?" A voice called out from one side. Spinning around, Eddie quickly walked to the desk,
"Uh yes. I'm Edmundo Diaz, I think you called me about one of your patients." He lowered his voice, "Evan Buckley?"
The woman's eyes widened in recognition,
"Yes. Right this way Mr Diaz."
Stepping out from behind the desk, she lead Eddie to a room at the back of the clinic, away from prying ears.
"He's in room 3," she directed, pointing to the room at the end of the corridor.
Eddie stepped up to the door before raising his hand to knock,
"Buck?" He called out, "it's me. You ok in there?"
He was met by a groan,
"Buck?" He called out again, starting to get a bit worried now, "the lady gave me the key to your room. I'm... I'm gonna come in ok? If you're by the door I need you to let me know, try and move away if possible?"
Hearing no shuffling from the other side, just heavy breathing, Eddie carefully unlocked the door, opened it just enough to squeeze through, and slid inside the room.
The first thing that hit him was the smell. The second thing was Buck, slumped in one of the seats, eyes dazed, pants unbuckled, breathing heavily, and with what Eddie could only imagine was a used donation pot clutched in one hand.
"Everything ok, Buck?" He asked getting a dopey grin in response "the receptionists were a bit worried about you so they gave me a call as your emergency contact."
"Eddie," Buck breathed, eyes clearing up a little bit, "what are you doing here?" He fumbled with the pot as he tried to put it on the table, Eddie catching his arm. He gently pried the pot out of Buck's hand, slightly taken aback at the heaviness and warmth coming from it.
"What's happened Buck? You look like you're high."
Buck cleared his throat nervously,
"I... I might have held off for five weeks. It took me a bit by surprise. I uh... I wasn't quite ready for the force of everything. I'm not sure I can walk,"
Pursing his lips, Eddie let out a long breath,
"You know they only recommend 48 hours of abstinence before a donation... A maximum of 7 days," he let out a snort, "I cannot believe I'm going to have to carry you out of a sperm donation clinic. Mierda."
He checked the donation pot was secured before reaching over the magazine's buck had been given. He paused. That was a not a female magazine Buck had left open on the table. In fact, he was pretty sure the man on the double page spread that he could see looked really quite similar to him. His eyes flicked back to Buck's face, watching as the younger man realised what he had seen.
"Let's get you out of here, Buck." He sighed, "think you can do up your pants for me? You're still looking a little bit... Unfinished?" He made a show of looking away as Buck looked down at himself, only now seeming to realise he was still hard in his underwear, a stain spreading out across the front.
"Uh... y...yeah," he stuttered out, slowly pulling his trousers taught, doing up the zip and button. He tried to stand, stumbling a bit as Eddie caught him, hooking one of Buck's arms across his shoulders.
"Think you can hold onto those mags? I'll take you..." He cleared his throat uncomfortably, "...donation? It would be a shame if you dropped it after all this."
"Oh. Um... yeah. That would be great. T...thanks Eddie,"
Hoisting Buck it his feet, Eddie gave him a moment to get settled and grab the magazines while he took the donation pot himself. He walked the two of them back to reception and placed the pot into their donation tray, along with the key to donation room 3.
"Is he going to be ok?" The lady who had called him originally asked, "does he still want to go ahead with this?"
Eddie sighed, "he'll be fine. There's nothing wrong with the donation. He's just been incredibly stupid. I'll knock some sense into him."
He turned and helped carry Buck to his car, noticing the jeep wasn't anywhere to be seen.
"Ok, we're gonna get you home. I'm going to collect your Jeep. And then we're gonna have a chat that I think is long overdue. How does that sound, Buck?"
Buck flushed, "uh great. Sounds good, Eddie."
Eddie let out another sigh before biting the bullet,
"and you're not going to run away while I'm out collecting your Jeep are you? Anyway, if you wanted photos to help, you could have just asked me instead of using a generic magazine. I photograph well."
Buck's head whipped round to where Eddie was smirking, eyes not leaving the road, "what?"
Eddie let out a snort, "I know what I said."

In another life
Tumblr media
Lighting never strikes twice. That was what Eddie hoped as he climbed the ladder screaming Buck’s name. His ears were ringing not hearing the shouting of the 118, demanding him to come back down and stop. How could he stop when Buck, the man he knew he loved but would never share, was dangling for his life? Or the worst dead.
The rain poured harder mixing with Eddie’s tears as he continued his climb. Lightning strikes again a couple of inches away causing him to lay low still gripping the ladder while Buck still hangs 40 feet above the ground. Eddie sucked in a breath continuing the climb just a few more rungs.
“Buck, hold on,” Eddie yelled. He grabbed hold of the rope, which was heavy in his hands. Eddie had held Buck’s life in his hands a million times. Each time he never felt like he was going to lose hold. Tonight was different as he slowly lowered Buck down knowing Hen and Bobby were down below waiting for him.
Hen and Bobby grabbed a whole of him as Eddie cut the rope leaving the last lifeline he had of Buck. He ran down the ladder as fast as he could to meet them on the other side of the gurney. They all have been here before.
“His breathing is swallow,” Chim called, “Starting chest compressions.”
“His heart stopped beating, we need the AED,” Hen commanded.
Eddie shook away the fog running into the ambulance to grab the device and hand it over to Chimney. At that moment Eddie had never felt so useless and scared.
Eddie stood as he watched Buck rise and fall off from the gurney. Each shook trying to bring him back to life. Seconds felt like minutes and minutes felt like hours. Clear, one, clear, two, clear, three, clear, four, clear, five.
“We have a heartbeat load him in,”
Eddie scrambled picking up the end where Buck’s head laid, unconscious and still. He sat next to him grabbing his hand, sending a plea, a wish. Everything would be okay.
—-----------------------------------
“What a man, whatta man. Whatta mighty good man” sang from the radio.
“That was What a man by Salt and Pepper. Stay put because more great hits are coming your way at WJ 1.03 the place to get the hits and the classics in LA.”
Evan turned his car off reaching in the back seat of his car for his book bag. He unzipped it looking frantically for his badge. Each pocket comes up empty. Today was not a day to be late with it being Monday and the copier was already jammed with last-minute copies. Then it dawned on him, Evan had put it in the glove box.
Evan scrambled out of his car running into the school building as the bell rang.
“Good morning, Mr. Buckley. Crazy morning.”
“Good morning, Carol. More like a busy weekend. My brother is staying with me because a pipe burst in his apartment.”
“Tell Daniel, I said hello.”
“Will do" Evan called over his shoulder as he ran down the hallway to his classroom.
“Good morning, my friends. Has anyone done anything recently for the history books?”
Evan paused waiting for his students to think of anything. Finally, a hand shot up. Teachers aren’t supposed to have favorites but Christopher was definitely Buck’s favorite. He was such a smart kid.
“Yes, Chris,”
“My dad saved someone from a fire.”
“Your dad is a firefighter,” Evan asked. There was a point in time he thought he was going to become a firefighter. Plans changed and teaching was more his calling anyways.
“He’s a hero,”
—---------------------------------
Evan and Chris stood outside the school waiting for his dad to come to pick him up. Something about his shift ran over and would be late. Evan didn’t mind. Chris was telling him stories about how he moved to Texas and went to the zoo with his tia Peppa.
“I am sorry for being late. Hello, mijo,” a man called wearing an LAFD shirt running up the sidewalk and scooping up Christopher in a tight hug.
Evan smiled as Chris laughed in his dad’s arms. He had the biggest smile he had ever seen.
“It’s not a problem, Mr. Diaz. Chris is such a wonderful kid. We were just about to discuss which is a better predator. A lion or a tiger.”
Mr. Diaz smiled at Evan. Evan nervously laughed. This man made him feel a certain kind of way and he couldn’t put a finger on it.
“He just loves the zoo. Begs to go every weekend. It’s just so hard to go with my shifts and to find childcare but that's my problem,” Mr. Diaz laughed, “Christopher say bye to Mr. Buckley.”
“Bye, Mr. Buckley,” Chris called.
Evan watched as they walked away. For a moment he could feel his feet moving towards them. Wanting to go with them like it was a natural thing. Evan shook it off, grabbed his bag, and headed home.
—----------------------
A teacher's salary didn’t get you far in LA but a small apartment with a wonderful view of the brick wall of the apartment across from you. Luckily Evan also had to walk up several flights of steps since his apartment was on the eighth floor.
“Maddie, they said the pipe wouldn’t be fixed for two weeks. Besides, Evan doesn’t mind.”
Evan walked in to find his older brother sprawled across his green couch. Daniel was the cool older brother that Evan looked up to. Everything Daniel did, Evan wanted to do too. Daniel moved to Los Angeles to become an actor. Evan knew he was going to move to LA once he graduated college. Daniel was his best friend until now. He was kinda a mess.
Evan walked around cleaning up the Chinese takeout and dirty dishes that were piled up in the sinks. He loved his brother but he had to go. Daniel walked over to sit at one of the bar stools so Evan could see Maddie.
“Hey, Mads. Two weeks isn’t so bad. Now tell me when are you coming to visit.” Evan questioned.
“It’s pretty busy here at the hospital, but I will get out there for the summertime. Save a spot for me at the beach.”
“Will do. How are mom and dad?”
“Evan, they’re mom and dad. Mom is obsessed with her book club and dad is still busy at the college.”
Sound about right, Evan thought. Their parents were so busy with keeping up appearances. Country club on Saturday. Church functions on Sunday. Dad flew for conferences. Mom joined a million clubs and sponsored the next charity event. It was the Buckley siblings on their own for school and making dinner. Maddie was the mom and Daniel was the dad for Evan when he was a small child. There was never a point in time where he was wondering where they were when he had Maddie and Daniel.
—----------------------------------
Eddie paced back and forth in front of Buck’s room. It’s been twelve hours since they brought Buck in. Twelve hours since Eddie begged for his partner’s heart to reset. Pray for him to be okay. To not die under his hands but to live. Eddie couldn’t bring himself to go into the room or look through the window. Couldn’t bear to see Buck hooked up to all of the machines, unable to breathe on his own. So, standing guard was all Eddie could do.
“He looks so small. When Buck was young, he was always a reckless kid. Making ramps to jump higher and higher even though half of the time he would miss the landing. I would run out to clean up the scratches. Scrolling him for being reckless. Buck has broken every bone in his body and came out of it with a smile. I always thought he was,”
“Invincible,” Eddie whispered, finishing Maddie’s sentence.
Maddie turned to Eddie with tears in her eyes. Eddie didn’t know Maddie. He knew her as Buck’s sister and Chim’s girlfriend. Eddie felt bad for not getting to know her more.
“When will this be done? If it isn’t Buck in the room, it's Chim or you.”
Eddie gave her a perplexed look.
“Me?”
Maddie nodded, wrapping her arms around her waist. Shielding the cold that was not there. If Eddie knew the feeling because he could still feel the cold wet rain on his skin even though he had been dried for hours.
“Yes, you. I wasn’t there for Buck during the sniper situation but I heard enough stories about Buck’s actions. He was reckless and emotional. Chimney would come home a wreck after begging him to open up or say anything. He wouldn’t. Chimney said Buck came to work and went back to Christopher. They would ask him to stay just for a quick meal and each time he said no. He had to go home and be with his,” Maddie didn’t finish the sentence.
Buck had been running home after a long shift, half asleep when the crew asked if he wanted to get breakfast. He just shook them off, saying he had to get home because he needed to drop his son off at school. The crew stared at each other not saying a word because he was that child’s second father and Eddie would agree that day he was discharged from the hospital.
“We’re firefighters. This was what we signed up for right? Protect others and bring them home to their families even though we know that we might not make it back to ours.” Eddie said.
Maddie gave him a solemn look, laying a hand on his crossed arms.
“Eddie, why don’t you go home and get some sleep?”
Eddie laid a hand over her hand dropping it back to her side. “Maddie you know I can’t,”
“I do,”
—--------------------------------------------
“Daniel, is there a full moon? Did you know full moons cause dysregulates in the gravity of the Earth causing people’s moods to fluctuate,” Evan closed the door behind him as he walked in from a long day of teaching the children of America. It had to be a full moon, he thought, with how wild they were. “Wait are you cleaning?”
“Evan, don’t act so surprised.”
“Okay, why are you cleaning?”
“Because little brother we are going to be having a guest so make yourself look presentable,”
“I am.” Evan gestured down at his outfit from school. Teacher clothes are the best kind of dress clothes.
“No, change into something else. You look like a teacher.”
“Well because I am,” Evan pouted.
“Please for one night look like a guy that doesn’t.”
Evan shrugged his shoulders walking into his room to find something to wear. The only thing he could find was a white striped button-up that he didn’t even know he owned. He picked up and a flash of a scene hit him.
“Are you hurt?” echo in his mind. Evan looked up to see blood all over him with him in that shirt. His hands shook with fear. He brought a hand to his face feeling nothing. He blinked to find his reflection go back to normal. Evan tried to shake off the uneasiness as he heard his brother call for him in the kitchen.
Step into the kitchen to find a man about six foot with broad shoulders. Wearing a black button-up and black jeans with pointed boots. The man turned around and gave him a shocked look.
“Mr. Buckley?”
“Mr. Diaz?”
The two men stared at each other in shock seeing each other. It was weird for them since Evan was his son’s teacher.
“Do you know each other?” Daniel asked.
“Yeah, I teach his son,”
Diaz put his beer down, trying to scramble his way out of the door. “I’m so sorry this is awkward, I should go.”
Daniel clapped him on the shoulder pulling him back before he could escape. “Nonsense, I invited you over to play poker and that’s what we are going to do besides Eddie, Evan is a terrible player.”
Eddie
Evan was feeling deja vu and he couldn’t for the life of him understand why this stranger seemed so familiar to him. Did he feel it too? Evan had to know.
Eddie laughed, shrugging his shoulders and sitting down. Evan followed suit sitting next to him like it was natural. The game went as planned and Evan lost several games. Throughout the game, their shoulders hit against each other and the jokes flowed between the two. They were having such a good time they didn’t even notice Daniel had left.
“Do you feel deja vu?” Evan finally asked.
“Yes, but I don’t believe in that stuff,”
“Like, it feels like we have met before right,”
Eddie nodded. The wave of realizing he wasn’t crazy made him feel like it was hard to breathe. Evan grabbed his chest trying to suck in air but none was coming in. Panic rose in his chest as he tried to reach out to Eddie for help.
“Buck!”
—-------------------------
Twenty-four hours had passed and the only sleep Eddie had was the few minutes he dozed off in the bathroom trying to change his clothes that Carla brought him. He continued to pace as visitors came and went. Each member of the 118 begged him to go home and get some rest. Eddie knew he wouldn’t rest until Buck woke up. He had to wake up.
Eddie stood in the doorway for the first time taking in the image of Buck. He thought he would never have to see the love of his life ever lay in that bed with a tube in their throat. Life had a funny way of mocking you.
As Eddie watched Buck sleep the machines started to beep. Buck’s chest jerked as he was struggling to try to take a breath.
“Help, he’s not breathing,” Eddie yelled. The stinging behind his eyes betrayed him as tears spilled watching the nurses try to get him stable.
Eddie sank against the wall cuffing his hands in his head. The words he wanted, needed to say burned as they were trapped. He needed him to be okay, not just for him but for Christopher.
—----------------
One second he couldn’t breathe, the next the air in his lungs restabilized. He was okay. How was he suddenly okay? Evan stood up to find Eddie in utter panic. His hands froze in midair on his way to save him.
“Did you call me Buck?”
Eddie frowned his eyebrows giving him a side-eye. “Dude, you almost died and you are questioning me if I called you Buck.”
Evan shrugged his shoulders agreeing.
“What the fuck? No, I didn’t call you Buck. How are you all of the sudden okay? We need to get you to the hospital. I think you’re having a heart attack.” Eddie’s voice went into a slight panic mode.
Evan waved him off. “No seriously, I am okay. Like no pain or anything.”
Eddie continued to stare at him with a what the fuck look but Evan just laughed.
“Will you at least allow me to check you out for my peace of mind as I am a trained paramedic? My stuff is just in my truck.”
Evan nodded seeing why not so, he could prove he was okay.
—------------------
Eddie held Buck’s hand while he listened to his steady heartbeat again. Five minutes it took to bring Buck back to stabled. It took five minutes for Eddie’s heart to come back to him. Five minutes was all it took for Eddie’s life to end and the future he never wanted to see again begin.
“Buck, you scared me.”
—--------------------
“Evan, you scared me.”
—-------------------------
“I thought I had lost you and I couldn’t do anything about it. I still could.” Eddie cried. The dam broke. Eddie laid his head against Buck’s arm allowing the emotions he was so afraid to fear for years. He loved Buck. Buck was the one smiling in the face of death even though Eddie hated it. Buck was the one with the heart of gold willing to do anything for anyone. Eddie just wished that Buck would know that everyone else would do the same for him.
“Eddie?”
Eddie shot up wiping the tears from his eyes to see Bobby standing at the door.  He leaned against the door with his rosary beads in hand.
“Go home,” Bobby said.
“I wish everyone would stop saying that,”
“We will when you do,”
“I can’t go home when my home is here.”
Bobby nodded understanding probably better than anyone here. He walked over sitting next to Eddie. Both men said nothing as their eyes stared at the man they both loved in a different ways.
—------------------------------
“I scared you,” Evan laughed.
Eddie gave him a smirk removing the blood pressure cuff from his arm.
“Yeah, kinda, you were not breathing and I for a second,” Eddie didn’t finish.
Evan stared at him. Evan’s whole life felt like a ghost in his own world. No one ever saw him as who he was. Chasing that person to love him. The second Eddie appeared in his life, Evan felt that longing disappeared.
“Your heart is beating fine. Evan, you have a clean bill of health.”
“I told you I was fine.”
“I’m really happy you are,”
Buck leaned forward staring into Eddie’s eyes. Eddie leaned with him. Their faces were only inches apart.
“Relationships are stupid. The girl I was dating just dumped me because she couldn’t deal with my lifestyle,” Daniel yelled barging into Evan’s and Eddie’s moment.
Evan and Eddie pulled back glancing back and forth from each other.
“So, who’s ready for the next round?”
—------------------------------------------
A father’s love transcends time and blood. Being a father meant loving a child with all that you could give. Your child was an extension of you. Like having your heart walking on the outside of your body so you would be careful who you allowed to have it. Eddie didn’t think twice when he gave his to Buck. As he rounded the corner to find his son sitting in the hospital he shouldn’t have been surprised.
“Chris,” Eddie said sternly, squatting down to meet his son’s eyes, “does Carla know you are here?”
“Yes, dad, she’s at the vending machine.”
“Why are you here?”
“I need to see Buck,”
“You know kids can’t be in the ICU,” Eddie grimaced. He hated that his son knew that.
“I don’t care. I want to see Buck,” Chris demanded.
Eddie sucked in a breath pinching the bridge of his nose. He knew he wasn’t going to win this battle. Eddie looked around to see if anyone was coming. He led Christopher into the room. Christopher went right over unscared. Once again he hated that his son had been in this position before. He was the bravest person Eddie had ever met. Braver than Eddie could have been.
—--------------------------------
“Okay, my friends, single file line and quiet. Everything will be fine.” Evan directed his class outside after the fire alarm went off unexpectedly. “Now stand on the sidewalk while we wait for the firefighters to come to give us the all-clear.”
“It’s going to be my dad,” Chris chimed in.
Evan smiled nodding seeing the 118 engine pulling up. The company Eddie worked for. Eddie jumped out of the truck running over to Evan with fear in his eyes.
“Is Christopher okay?”
Buck laughed pointing to Chris telling his classmates all about fire safety. “I think future firefighter over there is doing just fine.”
“Clearly he is. I couldn’t imagine anything bad happening to him. After losing his mother, I've become more protective than I already was.”
“He lost his mom?”
“Yeah, but it’s funny. Ever since Christopher has been in your classroom, he has been happier. He has finally come to be himself again. I just wanted to thank you for that.”
Evan never realized that. He had changed this one kid’s life but in reality, this kid changed his. Evan was about to quit teaching after having a tough year but the second Christopher walked into his classroom, he knew everything was going to be okay.
Everything was going to be okay kid.
“Dad is the school on fire,” Chris asked.
“No buddy. Your school is all clear,” Eddie bent down scooping his son into a hug.
“Diaz, time to go,”
“Text me when you get off. We can play some pool.” Evan called as Eddie jogged away.
“It’s a deal.”
—---------------------------
Christopher laid a hand on Buck’s arm. Eddie tried to answer all of the questions his curious son had. Some were easier others made him want to break down. He had to be strong for his son.
“Buck, it’s Chris. If you can hear me. I just wanted to say I love you and I know you can come back where ever you are. You have to come back because dad and I will miss you a lot. Dad most of.”
Tears ran down Eddie’s cheek as the words his son said that sounded like they were from an older person.
“Buck, please wake up,”
—-------
Firefighter Eddie Diaz was shot and killed today while on duty. Sources say there is a sniper targeting firefighters. They are still at large. Public please be advised. If you see something please say something.
Omg Christopher, Evan thought. He fell to his knees in his classroom dropping his phone on the ground. Chris was so young and lost both of his parents. Then there was Eddie. Eddie was special and different. Evan might have not known him for long but it felt like a lifetime.
"Mr.Buckley, are you okay?"
Evan looked up to see Christopher standing over him. He stood up but still bent to meet Chris's eyes. He was the one that had to tell this kid.
"Christopher, your dad loves you so much. More than you will ever know."
Chris shook his head understanding
"Chris, a bad man shot your dad. This means your dad isn't coming to pick you up. He died saving people."
Tears streamed down Chris's cheeks. Evan wrapped his arms around his student pulling him into a tight hug. An ache in his chest swelled leading to tears falling from his own eyes.
"It's okay," Chris said. Evan pulled him back looking at him in shock. "Dad said if anything would happen to him I would live with you Buck."
Buck. Evan took a step back from that name. No one had ever called him that but at that moment he felt like it was right.
In a blink of an eye, the world fell away and turned black as the cries for Buck echoed around him.
"Buck, please wake up."
—-----------
Buck gasped awake to find himself in a hospital bed with Chris and Eddie crying. Buck reached out a hand laying it on Chris’s shoulder.
“Hi, bud.” Buck croaked out.
“Buck!” Chris cried.
Eddie looked up wrapping his arms around him tight. Buck grimaced underneath the embrace from still being sore. Eddie pulled away, apologizing.
“I’m sorry. Did I hurt you more?”
Buck shook his head no. “I had the craziest dream.”
“I can’t wait to hear all about it once you get better,”
Buck smiled, letting out a small laugh. He held out an arm gesturing for Chris to hug him. Buck held on tight not wanting to let go. “I love you both so much,”
“We love you. I love you. Now never scare me like that again. For a second I lot I had lost the love of my life.”
“Trust me I know that feeling. I promise to never scare you again. Since I never want to almost leave my family again.”

wip fuck it inspiration seven sentence sunday
tagged by @alyxmastershipper @mysteriouslyyounggalaxy @spotsandsocks @shortsighted-owl @swiftiebuckleys @buddiefication and @eddiesbuck multiple times over the past couple weeks i’m so sorry i haven’t been participating (things have been hectic) but i have several snippets to offer in apology!!! thank you all for the tags and your lovely snippets <333
this turned out pretty long so all the snippets (including: texas au, sa fic pt. 2, and a couple surprise wips) are below the cut!!
texas au:
“I’m… perfect?”
Eddie lets out a soft breath. “You’re perfect for me, at least. And I don’t let my dad near things that are perfect for me.”
“Why not?”
“Because I like to protect what I love.”
Evan blinks at him slowly. “And you love me?”
Eddie gives him a silly, dramatic frown and raises an eyebrow. “Of course I love you. You’re my family, remember? Family protects each other.”
“Not always,” Evan says, softly, without thinking. A strange expression crosses Eddie’s face and he squeezes where he’s taken Evan’s hand in his own.
“No,” Eddie agrees, “not always. But we will, okay? You have my back…”
“And you can have mine,” Evan finishes, holding out his pinky finger on instinct. Eddie smiles, hooking his own finger around Evan’s.
“Deal.”
other wips:
sa fic pt. 2
“Buck.” Eddie’s soft voice breaks through his thoughts and then there’s a warm hand covering Buck’s and a solid thigh pressed against his. Buck blinks rapidly, heat behind his eyes warning of tears. Eddie squeezes his hands and Buck glances up at him. Soft brown eyes meet his and the concern in them makes his stomach twist.
“I’ve never said no,” Buck whispers again, but his voice cracks and the words are heavy on his tongue.
Eddie’s head tilts and suddenly he just looks sad. “But did you always say yes?” It hits Buck like a punch to the gut. Because… he never thought about that. Like, he always knew he needed to hear the person he was with say yes because, well, some men suck and he was not about to ever do anything that wasn’t completely and crystal-clearly consensual. But him? He never really thought about it that way. Maybe because he never thought he would have to say no. Or maybe- maybe because he never exactly thought he could.
“I don’t know,” he admits finally. The words shake and he makes himself take a deep breath. “I- they always said yes.”
prostitute/ringfighter (really need a better name here)
A quick, wounded expression flitted across the man’s face and Eddie almost felt bad. Looking the way he did, he was probably not used to being told no. But the man quickly schooled his expression, appearing more bored again than anything else. He shrugged, removing his hand and taking another long hit.
“Your loss.”
“Oh, I’m sure,” Eddie said lowly, the words heavy with intent. Something glinted in the other guy’s eyes and then, with a small grin, he started to turn.
“Wait.” Eddie grabbed his wrist and the other man stopped immediately. “You got a name?”
Piercing blue eyes studied him for several long moments and then, “Buck. You can call me Buck.”
“Get home safe, Buck.”
The lopsided smile returned. “You too, Eddie Diaz.” Then Buck slipped from Eddie’s grasp and he was gone.
Since then, Eddie’s seen Buck around the club a lot. Often adorned by a man or woman hanging off him, but always with his gaze trained on Eddie. He would bring in his date for the night, and all but ignore them as he watched Eddie with a stare that made Eddie’s skin crawl, and then a while later, with a slight nod, he and his date would leave.
Eddie doesn’t understand it, this peculiar relationship they’d developed. There’s a strange sense of trust there, with the small incline of Buck’s head before he left, with the burning gaze that egged Eddie on during his fights. Eddie couldn’t quantify it, couldn’t put a name to the buzz that lit under his skin at Buck’s attentiveness.
and finally a mostly abandoned wip simply called “bed fic”
“I promised Chris I’d take a ton of photos on the drive up and I don’t wanna have to keep leaning over you constantly… d’you mind?”
“No,” Buck says, because Eddie’s invoked Chris and Buck will never argue against that. “It’s fine- as long as you get good photos for him.” Eddie offers him a small smile, and Buck turns to Ravi with a hopeful head tilt.
“I get super carsick, sorry,” Ravi tells him, nearly grimacing. “This is probably preferable to me hurling every twenty minutes.”
“Yeah,” Buck sighs, accepting his fate. “Definitely preferable to that.” And then he maneuvers his way around and squeezes in between Ravi and Eddie. Luckily, the row is wide enough so they’re not completely squished together, but still-
“H-hey,” Buck tries, leaning forward in between Chim and Lucy as Bobby pulls away from his apartment complex. “Shouldn’t the… physically larger people get the more spacious seats?”
“Seniority,” Chim replies instantly.
“Lucy is the newest member here.”
Lucy turns to grin brightly at Buck. “Yeah, but I was picked up before you.”
