Invisibility In Witchcraft
Invisibility is something we see in all different types of media for a very long time - superhero comics and movies, Harry Potter book and movie series, fairy tales and lore from several countries. It is one of those powers that even in modern science they have been trying to create true invisible cloaks and armor for military use. Though invisibility in literature and movies is not the same as when we refer to it in witchcraft. So let us talk about this aspect of magic today, a brief history and even some modern day spells.
Tumblr media
What is Invisibility Magic?
Invisibility magic is magic of concealing oneself, others, places and objects from detection. As stated above it is not in the literal sense of you vanishing from sight however think of it like a cloaking device - it helps you go unnoticed or makes you less likely to be observed. Of course take this with a grain of salt - magic has its limits. However, an invisibility spell can help you as an additional buffer of protection. Often times, invisibility spells are to ensure special items you have hidden away go undetected such as your grimoire on a bookshelf or sigils of protection scattered about your home, it can also be used for oneself or others to help them travel in safety.
History
Old manuscripts and grimoires dating back to the 1600s have been found describing spells for invisibility. These such spells include chanting, potions and rituals said to help the caster ‘vanish’ from people’s views or travel unseen. One of these manuscripts has been archived if you wish to see it here and another here please keep in mind these are old scripts and may not be safely done today - do your research on ingredients and if they are safe to use modernly.
Though invisibility in witchcraft is a bit harder to dig up, invisibility has a long and rich history in religion, folklore and tales. Many creatures, spirits and persons of lore, legend and story through the centuries are said to vanish without a trace or go unseen by normal people.
In the cases of witchcraft though it is harder to find information on it, as listed above some old manuscripts were found listing methods of invisibility. Some other methods listed have been carrying the heart of a bat or a toad or frog under one’s garments (or their right arm) can render you harder to detect. Others speak about how black hens and chickens may be related to invisibility by using their feathers as charms. Mercury historically was used as a method to be deemed invisible, with using it to make jewelry or charms a popular method - however perhaps not safe in modern day terms. Another grimoire called “The Second Book of the Secrets of Albertus Magnus” states that wrapping an Ophethalminus stone in a Laurel leaf will render the wielder invisible. What is an Ophethalminus stone? It is commonly accepted and believed he was referring to a Lapis Lazuli stone.

Correspondences
Of course modern day invisibility calls for more modern day correspondences - to help insure the user and caster are using ingredients that relate to what they seek. PROTECTION FROM POLICE SPELLJAR
Tumblr media
In the political situation we find ourselves in world wide, I think many witches would find use or know someone who would find use with this spelljar. Mine isn’t very fancy, but has the intent to protect myself and others from negative attention from law enforcement. I originally made this all the way back in 2020.
Two disclaimers before I share the recipe: debate me and I block you. I do not care. Also, this isn’t meant to help commit crimes or what not. This spell is meant to shelter yourself and other people from police brutality.
Tumblr media
WHAT I PUT IN MY JAR:
-sage
-the table of Jupiter, (pictured below the cut), which is associated with authority and law
-sigils for the following: invisibility, protection, safety, acab, and blm. The blm sigils I placed in there to extend protection to others, specifically protesters
-gold wire wrapped around the lid
And that’s it! Most of the power in this spell was made not from the ingredients, but the burning sense of righteous anger I felt making it.
I’d also recommend adding:
-war water
-pig motifs or bones wrapped in silver thread, for binding
-an oak twig
-iron bolts/washers/nails/scraps
-black and/or silver thread, or whatever color you associate with binding
Tumblr media
For accessibility:
A four by four grid square with numbers placed in each box, in exact order.
4 14 15 1
9 7 6 12
5 11 10 8
16 2 3 13

Though Roderick and his followers didn't realise it at the time, the magic in the circle and the glass orb meant that the only people who could see Dream were the ones that were there when he was summoned, so as far as the guards are concerned they're guarding an empty glass sphere that a delusional old man thinks holds something. And then of course, Hob gets hired as a guard and it's dealer's choice if Dream has realised by then that no one but Burgess and his Order can see him.
But then because Hob is sort of aware that magic and esoteric things do exist, he sees Burgess (sr or jr) talking to the globe and is like, huh. Maybe there is something in there. But maybe it's a demon like the rumours say and I shouldn't let it out. But Hob starts talking to Dream anyway while the other guard takes longer and longer smoke breaks.
Whichever Burgess is around at the time realises that there must be something about this guard, because the next time he comes down to yell/bargain/threaten, Dream has moved. He's hidden his face, there are handprints against the glass, and the dreamlord's shoulders are shaking.
It doesn't take him long to figure out the pattern - that this only happens around Robert, for whatever reason, and the man himself has no notion of what's in the circle - and eventually he sends the guards out so that he can tell Dream exactly what he'll do to this Robert if Dream doesn't comply. That he may not understand what it is about this one man that compels one of the Endless so, when he has been so unaffected by everything else but the death of his familiar, but that doesn't matter. He will find out, and he will leverage it, however he needs to.
He turns and leaves, and basically I want Hob to wander back in none the wiser and settle into his chair and his usual routine of talking all moony eyed about his stranger, while Dream is roaring his fear and fury and beating his fists bloody against the glass

Oh wait, lol, Gilear is Fig's warlock patron. That makes so much sense now. Every time Fig does warlock magic, something unlucky happens to her because that's the equivalent exchange. Fig gets magic and, in return, she absorbs Gilear's bad luck.
It's a contract. That's why there was such a focus on 'unspoken warlock contracts' and how 'they are more common than people think' and how 'they can be based on love', ect in the warlock class! Brennan is setting up the lore for the reveal.
I bet it's going to be that Fig asked her dad to be her warlock patron and she wasn't specific enough. Because Fig has 2.5 dads (legal/kinda-adoptive father, bio father, sorta-step father), so the offer to Gilear was just sorta... there. An open ended contract that Fig accepted in a moment of crisis during the Night Yorb quest.
Now, you might be saying 'How could Gilear possibly be Fig's warlock patron? He's Gilear' and I hear you, I do but it makes sense. Fig is an arch devil! She has the power to make these kinds of contracts. The power, as Brennan said during the warlock class, is coming from her. This is why I think the equivalent exchange part is important because, in a lot of ways, Fig is also Gilear's patron? He would do anything to protect his daughter and he promised that to his arch devil of a daughter (making a contract). He gets good luck and the cost for him is yet unknown to us, but I'm going to guess that it's like.... his health or his life force or something.

going back and forth between wanting nox to have minor cosmetic shapeshifting abilities, bc a career as a prolific serial killer and public-facing executive of the local murder cult is not especially compatible with being a 6’3” purple guy with horns and a tail, and not doing that, bc it would be rly funny if they met orin and were just so jealous they could die

insert really smart comment here that makes you go "wow that was really smart i like this guy"
his note i wrote under the cut
Dear Betty,
Firstly I want to thank you, for everything. All your sacrifices, your wishes, your love and care. I wont let them go unnoticed any longer. I was a fool, blinded by my own blissful ignorance. You were my princess but i failed as your hero. This experience has opened up my eyes, made me realize things I should have seen sooner. Its silly really, I cared so much for you that I ended up hurting you. I am forever sorry for the pain i’ve caused. I wont let you down again, I don’t think you’ll let me.
I will live every day to the fullest, for you but especially for myself. You’ve shown me I deserve to live, and I’m going to. I have daughters, both capable and intelligent. I have a family, I can no longer waste my life away, I am not alone. Thank you, for helping me realize that. Love, Simon

I honestly love how easy it is to cheese the Gauntlet of Shar, and all while working completely within the system of both the game, and the faith itself.
Like, the "cheating" solutions fit so perfectly into Sharran teachings that I'm pretty sure that's what you're meant to do, honestly. Sure, you can brute-force it by playing by the presumed (never explicitly stated!) rules, but in the domain of a faith the main point of which is secrecy and deception, completing the trials easily by skewing the rules but without violating any explicit ones and avoiding all penalties is what sounds to me like what would actually be befitting of a Dark Justiciar's thinking.
The Self-Same trial is defeated by being somewhat cautious, and just sneaking in through the door until you spot them. In one surprise round, you can quite literally vaporize all of the shadow clones without them ever getting to lay a hand on you. They are very easily defeated in one or two rounds just by a counter-ambush. That's perfectly logical, strategic thinking that's totally within the rules.
The Soft-Step trial, literally all it needs is for you to get one character to lockpick the door and waltz in, and you can have them stand next to the altar as someone on the other side activates it. You don't even need to sneak, you just have to think slightly outside the box and take what you want, which is literally written on the wall of the inner chamber, as part of Shar's wisdom.
But the Faith-Leap trial might be my favorite, because on top of any jump-enhancing technique making an utter joke of it, it's also literally defeated just by Shadowheart being Shadowheart. Like literally her base strength is high enough that she doesn't need the paths, she can just leap from platform to platform, and end up on the other side without ever needing to wade into the darkness. Her being her is the greatest folly to Shar's trial, which is just... so thematically fitting.
Shar ain't got shit on us.

Most Anticipated Queer Middle Grade: January-June 2024
The Curse of Eelgrass Bog by Mary Averling (January 2nd) Nothing about Kess Pedrock’s life is normal. Not her home (she lives in her family’s Unnatural History Museum), not her interests (hunting for megafauna fossils and skeletons), and not her best friend (a talking demon’s head in a jar named Shrunken Jim). But things get even stranger than usual when Kess meets Lilou Starling, the new girl in…

Everyone is talking about Astarion’s wonderful plotline, voice, expressions, et cetera et cetera, but no one is talking about what a monster he is in combat. I swear he could 1v3 the rest of my party. Sharpshooter is so busted with dual-wielded hand crossbows and thief rogue, holy shit. Why would I use a bonus action to hide when I have a 95% chance of hitting with a shot that does 1d6+1d4+19 damage (before counting sneak attack) and auto-kills enemies if they have <=10 HP afterwards?
Gloomstalker ranger multiclass means that I get 5 of these attacks on the first turn of combat (actually 7 with bloodlust elixir, i.e. permanent haste that stacks with Haste). Add in 2d6 sneak attack, which will often crit given all those attacks (plus blinding raven familiar + durge cloak invisibility giving advantage) and occasional 1d6 poison damage (if Astarion needed healing for some reason), and he is frequently killing ~200 hp worth of enemies per round.
And with the huge initiative bonus, he usually just wipes them before they even get a turn. Not that them getting a turn would matter—even if they get in range of him, he walks around with 22 AC, a charm reaction, and Protection from Good and Evil giving disadvantage to most everything in Act 2.
And this all consumes 0 resources per fight (though Hasted Astarion is obviously even better). I keep thinking I’ll have to long rest at some point, but I just… don’t. I’ve fought something like 15+ combats today since Act 2 start and everyone is still at full health. One of my short rests I took entirely to renew the charge on a ring of jumping.
I feel like I’m missing out on precious Astarion cutscenes and I have no one to blame but Astarion.

part of why i love comics so much is i think the comic scene, specifically the western published-in-printed-issues comics scene, produces a very specific type of intellectual yet mentally unstable weirdo that is a rare genus completely unique to the medium. part of it is specifically because of the british invasion and the influence of that specific crop of writers on the comic as a medium i think. but like you literally cannot find alan moore or warren ellis or grant morrison anywhere else and they regularly do things that if said by any other human being in any other form of employment would be considered weird and off-putting at best and indicative of career ending insanity at worst but will instead be preserved by fans and treated as evocative writing on the human condition because they write for little pictures of guys in capes. i love it so much hope to be one of those weird guys someday

bnha class 1-a randomly generated quirkswap au blurbs
(also in this au mineta is replaced by shinso)
Yuga Aoyama - Acid
He sparkles and shines, too bad he accidentally sprays acid everywhere with his grand gesturing. He just wants to be famous! Why does he have to have such a gross quirk?
Mina Ashido - Navel Laser
Her pink skin, hair, and horns were all very eye-catching, but most eye-catching of all is her ability to shoot a bright powerful laser from her bellybutton. Only for a second though or she gets massive cramps.
Tsuyu Asui- Zero Gravity
She accidentally floats herself a lot, so holds her arms out from her body to prevent this from happening. She loves the water, but swimming through the air is almost as good.
Tenya Iida - Brainwashing
Despite not having his family's prized quirk, he's resolved to prove that he can still become a hero and uphold their legacy. He makes a point to be as honest and straightforward as possible to make up for his more sinister quirk.
Ochako Ururaka - Frog
She comes from a poor mutant family that had to face a lot of discrimination. She's going to use her frog-like powers to become a successful hero that makes lots of money to support them.
Mashirao Ojiro - Explosion
He's a pretty normal teenager, and teenagers sweat a lot. Unfortunately his sweat is explosive nitroglycerin. With a lot of training, he makes it work for him.
Denki Kaminari - Creation
He can make anything if he knows its composition! Unfortunately he's... really bad at memorizing what different things are made of. Mostly he just makes useless junk.
Eijiro Kirishima - Dark Shadow
He's a friendly and manly guy! His sentient quirk, not so much. The shadow version of himself that emerges from his body in the darkness is a terrifying quirk, but if anyone can wrangle it, he can!
Koji Koda - Earphone Jack
He's a quiet gentle guy with a tough rocky exterior. He hears everything though, with his sound-boosting quirk. And he can get Real loud when he wants to be.
Rikido Sato - One For All
He grew up quirkless, and with no great ambition other than to be kind. He gave his food to a skeletal man he met on the beach one day. They became friends, and eventually, the man revealed he was truly All Might, the number one hero. He was chosen as his successor, and now he had a motivation, to do as much good as possible by becoming the next symbol of peace. Through kindness, anything is possible.
Mezo Shoji - Invisibility
He always wears a mask. Not that it covers anything up. He's tall, buff, and completely invisible.
Kyoka Jiro - Anivoice
She's a punk-rock music lover. Unfortunately, animals can understand her, and most of the time they don't agree with her style. If you need an angry swarm of any creature that might be nearby, she's your hero.
Hanta Sero - Half Cold Half Hot
He has one of the world's most powerful quirks by total luck. Too bad he just wants to chill out and have fun.
Fumikage Tokoyami - Hardening
He has an unrelated mutation giving him feathers and a beak. His quirk allows him to turn those features to steel by hardening them to an incredibly sturdy substance.
Shoto Todoroki - Tape
The pro hero Endeavor was trying to create the perfect successor. And sometimes, a kid with a perfect split of white and red hair develops a totally unique quirk through a strange mutation. He can create tape. And shoot it from his elbows.
Toru Hakagure - Dupliarms
She's a totally normal girl! With six arms. That she can grow extra body parts on. She just wishes there was a cute guy out there with a thing for weird arms.
Katsuki Bakugou - Tail
He's determined to be the greatest. He may be pretty normal aside from a powerful prehensile tail, but that thing is a constant lashing force of destruction under the force of his rage.
Izuku Midoriya - Sugar Rush
When he was a kid, eating sugar would make him absolutely bonkers. His mother cut it out of his diet, but turns out his quirk transforms sugar into the motherlode of all rushes, granting him superhuman speed and strength. Only, afterwards, his body totally gives out.
Hitoshi Shinso - Engine
He's got engines in his legs. He's a speedster but never really figured out how to use his quirk for combat, so didn't manage to make it into the hero course. He wants to prove himself though, and worked hard for this transfer.
Momo Yaoyorozu - Electrification
She is a top-level student, her intellect is her pride. Unfortunately, if she uses her quirk too much, that prized intelligence is shocked away to nothing as her IQ drops tremendously until she recovers.
