Harry Styles Reacts to Banana Innuendo by Creating More Banana Innuendo
A little bit of Harry today but packing a big, uh, impact; there were pictures of the DWD set where one of the blurry blobs is distinctively Harold, and a much clearer fan pic of him driving a top down convertible in Palm Springs recently, personifying old Hollywood glamour looks even off the set, and! We see him in the Variety Hitmakers promo vid briefly, like very briefly, I literally blinked and missed it the first time, but the amount of information he gets across in those 4 or 5 frames! WOW. Okay so first of all he's wearing a necklace that is literally A DICK BANANA! It's a penis in a banana peel!! I mean we have always been knew that Harry was a big lover of... bananas... but he really just said no more subtext this time damn. It being Gucci is just the hilarious sprinkle on the sundae, they are really making the content Harry deserves huh? But let's not let that distract us from unpeeling the rest of this iconic look- his shirt says 'waiting for sunset', I see your sun reference there sir, and his sweater, an iconic cardigan first seen 3 years ago (it's the space boy sweater!!!), features daffodils, a heart pierced by an arrow (wait do those two things... go together or something...?), two birds, bugs and butterflies, and fish! Also it's beautiful. Someone make recreating these a tiktok trend please and tell me how to make one!
Comedian Nick Kroll, who is part of Don't Worry Darling, says Harry (er sorry I mean “ethereal demigod of love Harry Styles,” as per Vuture) was the first to know about his engagement, beating out even family by texting for up to the minute updates (“have you done it yet? What's going on?”). “He doesn’t know it yet,” Kroll says, “but he’s gonna be the guardian of all of our children.” Uh huh like that wasn't his play all along, he's even got this guy convinced it was his own idea! I assume Harry's plotting the tattoo space for their names even now, but hopefully he won't also be texting for constant updates on the babymaking process...
Who woke up with Liam today?? Well, if you missed that pleasure, he greeted us to say good morning and that it was “strange being the voice waking you up” but he hoped it wasn't too annoying and that we had a blessed day while Naughty List (#1 tik tok song third week in a row) played gently in the background. Thanks Liam! (Then Roman Kemp does what is I guess a Harry impression? Not his best tbh. Also no bananas or dicks, not convincing at all.) Liam also tells Roman that no, he's never done positive affirmations, what are those-- I was already looking forward to the advent for ME but now I'm excited for it for Liam too! No Liam, may YOU have a blessed day and learn all about saying nice things to yourself. The sleep story content isn't available yet, but lots of people went to sleep last night with Liam on their mind already even so; CelebTM, desperate to cling to their moment of notoriety and retain their directioner readers, published a ziam primer, and apparently their ploy is working cause suddenly everyone was talking about ziam. I mean okay but my dudes are you really letting CELEBTM guide your fandom? That just won't end well. But however suspect the source, ziam trended on twitter throughout the day yesterday, and then Gigi posted a pic of Zayn resting his face on her preggers belly from back in the summer, and then the fandom sort of split into the people trending Ziam harder and the people cooing at the pic for being cute so I guess if Gigi was trying to shush people as was the widespread theory, maybe it half worked? Or maybe it just made people about it talk more, hard to say. But! Either way it gave us an unseen of Zayn, so thats a win.
BBC1 will play Louis' christmas special from last year again this christmas day-- a whole hour of Louis playing great songs and chatting! (Remember how he played the same christmas song that Harry had called a family favorite when he covered it at Jingle Ball a couple weeks before? good times!) I guess you could be sad that it's a rerun, and yes who wouldn't want a new one, but also you could be happy cause it was super good and it's on again! Anyway judging by the influence celebtm is wielding, half of the fandom is new people right now anyway so I'm sure it will be new to many, so enjoy it friends. A registered but unreleased Louis song, One Track Mind, showed minor changes to a listing. Movement behind the scenes? Always, but if it moving closer to us, happy days!
Meanwhile on instagram Harris Reed said "I think the thing that's so beautiful about Harry is the fact that he does what he wants to do because he believes in it,” and “he immediately kind of understood I didn’t want to just make pretty clothes, I had a strong message for providing fluidity,” Louis liked posts from Liam Gallagher (about supporting crew) and Helene, Liam did what the grammys failed to- congratulated The Weeknd on his success (a whole year in the top 100), and Harry and Louis are up against each other-- no not like that, in a fan voted competition for 'Best Male'.  A pretty big hat to fill but better one of them than most anyone else! If you have a strong preference (and boy do some of you) go cast your vote! Let the infighting begin, uh, continue.

Sanders Sides D&D 2
Ooh fresh take: Jan is virge’s patron and that’s why there’s beef
Also: Jan is some sort of fae related being
Jan: i need you to do something for me Virgil: no Janus: that's not how this works!! Virgil: watch me :P
Okay so I was thinking of Patton as a cleric cuz ooh healer however, Patton as a Druid makes me so happy
I want logan to have Rage
(Also that could tie nicely in an arc about Logan learning to accept feelings)
but barbarian logan is going to be a scholar again and is gonna be smort
bc hes logan. he cant be not smart
Oh I figured he’d be the bbeg that eventually joins the party (hurt/comfort baybee!)(Remus)
he was the bbeg but then joined the party as a bardbarian or just a bard
plus, actual bard who accidentally casts vicious mockery instead of bardic inspiration
Side note: please include a scene where Remus attempts to seduce the dragon
also with this second au, i can start them at like level 5 so people can multiclass
Pat as cleric/druid
gasp logan as artificer/barbarian
janus sorcerer/rogue
because basically everything but alchemist would work well with barbarian, but alchemist feels very Logan
bc mad scientist being actually mad
alchemist logan making an experimental potion and going "here im not sure what this does but im sure its fine! someone drink it"
Remus does it voluntarily, but Logan usually tries to get Roman to drink it
Virgil will occasionally drink it when he's on his last legs and is just like.....100% done with the party
remus as a wild magic path barbarian and just fucking teleporting or doing something equally ridiculous whenever he rages
Oh my god Remus with rage would be a force to be reckoned with
You gotta describe the first time he goes into a rage really dramatically
obviously virgil is trying to "escape" his patron, Janus (really just do whatever he says to not do out of spite)
Eldritch knight roman
Feywild warlock virgil
hey so in the second d&d au, should roman and remus be actual full siblings but like remus went darkside and like romans just trying to get back at him for putting a dark stain on the family name
hey hey hey what about warforged Logan? (essentially a robot)(so like "i dont feel anything" becoming real)
okay hear me out. elf roman and elf base simic hybrid remus. so like maybe the reason remus went darkside was experimentation? so like. hes elf but special
FALLEN AASIMAR VIRGIL
virgil just transforming in the middle of a combat scenario and like his eyes turn into black pits and flightless skeletal wings appear on his back and like everyone near him has to make a charisma check and like he deals extra necrotic damage
Pat is the one human stuck in a band of misfits
so with it, roman would be a full elf, and remus would be an elf that has tentacles bc octopus
So robot logan
i meant literally he doesnt feel anything
like he has all the emotions, but he doesnt physically feel the need to like eat or sleep or stuff like that
he just.....he pretend he don't have the feelings.....but he do.....he feel so much and he hides it all in his littol mechanical heart <3
plus......if he warforged, then like.....AC huge
he stands in front of friends.....he protecc...."no, i don't have feelings, i am physically incapable of affection" but he do!! he do! he take hits for them because he do!! he care so much
Bro he spouts all this and then he uses a reaction to dive in front of someone and everyone’s just like oh
LIKE ROMAN STILL BEING MEAN TO LO BC HE THINKS HE DOESNT HAVE FEELINGS BECAUSE HE DOESNT HAVE A HEART BUT HE DOES
hey hey everyone needs to grow
and logan standing up for himself and other people stepping in and saying no stop thats not right
plus if canon wont give me roman facing the consequences of his actions towards Logan......
but also Roman learning how to properly handle his own emotions and how he interacts with others
logan who doesn't view himself as anything more than a machine to be useful to others
the party giving logan love and affection until he slowly learns his own worth as a person
Roman and Logan not getting along (maybe Roman has a Lore reason to distrust Warforged, maybe not) and slowly learning to trust each other
when Logan is feeling real down or having some issue, Roman actually comes through to help him, showing how far both characters have come
Okay yes but also can we please give Roman more confidence than canon? Like I’m sooooo sick of low self esteem being played for laughs or just being really really sad
this boy is going on a mission and will slap his brother upside the head and tell him to shut tf up remus youre not a monster just come back home and he will do it alone if need be
OKAY SO WHAT IF HE ORIGINALLY WENT ON THE QUEST JUST TO STOP REMUS ONCE AND FOR ALL BC ROMAN THOUGHT HE WAS A MONSTER, BUT ALONG THE WAY, AND AFTER LOGAN, HE CAME TO REALIZE THAT NO, JUST BECAUSE REMUS (AND LOGAN) ARE DIFFERENT, THEY ARENT MONSTERS, JUST DIFFERENT
AND LIKE IN THE FINAL PUSH TO MAKE REMUS JOIN BACK WITH HIS BROTHER, ROMAN IS PROJECTING HIS OWN FEELINGS ONTO REMUS AND EVERYONE IS LIKE WOW BRO YOU GOOD THERE, BUT ITS A BIG MOMENT FOR LOGAN, ROMAN, AND REMUS
im unsure as to how, but it happened when he was an older teen/young adult. a simic scientist either picked him (read: kidnapped), or remus volunteered (potentially to escape court life, unaware what exactly the experiment was going to do to him physically
bc also, remus and roman are royalty
so like. how best to get at the nobes/royalty/rich famous people than by turning their kid into a monster
wait, wait, wait, because i'm lowkey a sucker for this trope, but i'm not sure if it fits Remus: the experiments left him with some fairly significant physical pain/uncontrolled magical reactions. through some combo of trying to deal with that and trying find a cure for his pain, he keeps like....absolutely wrecking random towns on accident but also deliberately wrecking certain places looking for either a) vengeance on the guy(s) responsible or b) someone who can make the pain stop
SO LIKE. WILD MAGIC BARBARIAN DOING WEIRD SHIT TO HIM WHENEVER HE RAGES
AND LOGAN COULD MAYBE HELP WITH THE PAIN AND SHIT
BC ALCHEMY
Yknow, for simplification purposes, we could say the True Bbeg just gave Remus lycanthropy and Remus hasn’t managed to control it yet
lycanthropy but simic shit?
Mr. I-Don't-Have-Feelings sees the poor dude in pain and also Roman in emotional pain from seeing his brother in pain and is absolutely like "i must resolve this like right now, immediately" because he definitely doesn't hate seeing his friend suffering, or his friend's brother whom he's just met
he definitely doesn't relate at all to the idea of someone else shaping your body and absolutely does not sympathize with Remus's plight
i was thinking the grappling thing and either manta glide or the ability to breathe underwater for the simic stuff, but like he doesnt have control over the tentacles yet?
Manta glide seems like we could have fun battle scenes
he just jumps off a cliff to avoid mushy talk/dealing with his actions/roman
Roman: Remus just because you're a monster and though i wish i was an only child-- Remus, jumping off a cliff: byyeeeeee Patton: Roman, look what you did! Virgil: dammit jan what did you do? Janus: why do you think i had anything to do with that? im a fae, not a genie Logan, thinking: what an asshole. i wish i could do that
oh my god Logan always being tired mentally bc he cant sleep
Oh my gosh I love that. So Remus got kidnapped super young, (from royal family) they never found him, as a result Roman had to grow up super fast (side effect: lowkey inconsiderate and forgets to ask for others input). Meanwhile, Remus was experimented on by True Bbeg and came out with some trauma and super cool additives
yep! chronic pain and ptsd and all sorts of other shit!
so like, simic hybrids are usually created when they're adults. but what if the true bbeg decided to go younger to see what would happen, and thats why remus has chronic pain and stuff
he was still growing when his genes were spliced, so hes dealing with growth plates shifting and his body maturing and puberty and body changes and stuff
Pat is going to have a lighthearted story. Im saying that now. Hes the one without all the baggage
Sure, but his parents have to lowkey be the really kind people who are surprisingly always down for violence
everyone: multiple crises Pat: y'all need help Pat: love and affection in spades for his little band of misfits
Patton (which I think would be pretty simple, honestly he might just see danger and jump in and suddenly everyone in the party has Feelings)
Logan
Mhm. So how did he grow up? Was he just poof created? Wait
What if he was created by the king?
To make up for remuss disappearance
wait, wait....angst......he was created to fight (hence the barbarian stuff) but alchemy is his real passion
wait so like. a second son???
hes there to replace remus?
Yea! (But like in a sympathetic grief way) But that causes a bit of a complex in Roman and ergo Roman and Logan have a bit of a beef
okay so like. hes there to be a companion for roman, and like take remus' place, even though hes not actually in line for the throne?
LOGAN AS A KNIGHT
and just......the conflict of being created for a specific purpose (plus being, you know, robot and technically incapable of deviated from said purpose) vs the fact that he actually does have independent consciousness and like....wants to live life for himself
the parents made Logan a barbarian in hopes that him and Roman would be safe
okay. so logan was created by the king with the sole purpose to take remus' place as romans brother/companion, and to be his like guard? protector? and fight, but logan wants to be an alchemist and study shit
wait, wait, wait.....thinks about Asimov's Laws
he.....his first operative is protect (specifically protect Roman)
oh man. so hes literally just a shield
his second level operative is just like.....care for Roman's emotional well-being, but he doesn't really know emotions because he was kinda just spawned and nobody told him how
and he just....kind of....lets Roman treat him like garbage and take all his grief out on him because he's staunchly in denial of both having feelings or knowing how they work
Anyway Yea so Logan created by royal family in place of Remus which created angst between the two “brothers” and identity issues in Logan. Their arcs are learning how to healthily process emotions plus Roman apology and Logan commits to alchemy
So big question: why did virge make a deal?
Tricked
he gave janus his name
and instead of janus like killing him or whatever the fae do to people who break the rules of dealing with the fae, jan was like. hey. i'll give you magic, but do what i say
Janus is lawful neutral, but leans towards being selfish
hes self serving, but he has a strong set of morals and rules he follows
Tho I want to Virgil to also not be pushover so let’s say loophole happened and Jan has to stay with virge (hence why Jan is a part of the party)
okay so a couple of the rules are dont give a fae your true name and don't try to figure out their true name
So
what if virgil accidentally gave up part of his true name, and got stuck in the deal, but then figured out janus' true name
so in the same vein that janus had control over virgil, virgil now has more control over janus
he still gets his magic from janus, so he cant break free completely, but virgil has more freedom and can occasionally tell janus what to do or when to shove it
there should a running gag where virge can explain how he learned Jan’s true name but Jan can make something loudly censor him every time
(he learned his name bc once he heard janus practicing his evil genius voice and talking to himself in the mirror and janus said his true name)
so maybe janus sent virgil on the quest to protect a town or stop something related to remus, but virgil dragged him along
he might just be trying to protect a town thats close to a ley line, or something fae-related, and they just happen upon the whole thing
janus is selfish. but lawful vs chaotic is where he comes through, in morals vs doing whatever. janus has a strong set of loyalties to the fae, and to himself
so like....Remus is just too close to Jan's stuff and he wants to take him down
Virgil is just like....exhausted and said "fine, but if i gotta do this, you're coming, too"
or at least figure out a way to protect his place, even if it doesnt mean fully taking out remus. just moving him would work for jan
Janus: virgilllllllllll hes going to mess up my magic storage locker Virgil: Jan, its empty Janus: but its mine
Yea. Remus attacks a city away from the fae: Jan: Yknow I’m gonna sit this one out Virge: oh no you don’t, get up
Or
Janus vs Janice
so his real name is Janus, but Virgil calls him Janice
Virgil: This is Janice Janice: with a “U-S” Virgil: mhm, sure Jan
I'm a big fan of just like any of the old theory name being various aliases for Jan
Damien, Dante, Ethan, Declan, etc, etc

Fright Night But Make It Gay
Chapter 5 : Bitten
First | Last | Next | More
Pairings: Prinxeity, Intrological, moceit
Warnings: vampires bite, almost death, let me know if I missed anything
🎃🕸👻💀🕷🎃🕸👻💀🕷🎃🕸👻💀🕷🎃🕸👻
"Damnit!" Remus growled as he pulled bbn at his hair. "He fucking got away!"
"Most likely they will be back in his house. We can go there," Logan explained as he drove back home.
"We can't just storm into a vampires' house! He'll probably be waiting for us! He'll kill us as soon as we step into the house!" Remus yelled angrily.
Patton winced. "But we don't know that for sure. He could have killed us when he grabbed Roman but he didn't."
Remus rolled his eyes. "Yeah, probably because he didn't want to get caught. He's probably luring us back into his hideout so he can suck all the blood from our bodies!"
Patton's nose wrinkled in disgust. Janus groaned and buried his head in his hands. "Could you not describe these things in that much detail?"
Remus frowned. "It's not even that much!"
"Boys, enough." Patton sighed. "Let's just- give this guy a chance, okay? Roman really likes him."
"But he's a vampire!" Remus exclaimed.
"Oh, yes. Do please burst my eardrums," Janus scowled as he plugged his ears.
"Remus, please refrain from yelling. You're distracting me from driving," Logan said as he cast a quick glance to his boyfriend. Remus pouted. Logan sighed. "Look, I know you're worried about your brother. But we tried to get ahold of Peter Vincent and that didn't work. I think it's only fair to give this option a try."
"But what if he-"
"Remus, he has lived next to us for nearly a month now and Roman has spent multiple hours over there. This vampire has had plenty of opportunities to kill us for our blood. But he hasn't. He has chased after us because we took his boyfriend but he has not once tried to hurt us. He has not tried to cause an accident with us and he has shown no malice towards us. We should give him a chance."
Remus crossed his arms. "But he could be acting."
Logan sighed. "Yes, that's true but with the encounters we have had with him today, I believe he is harmless."
Remus' eyes blew wide. "HARMLESS?!?! HES A FUCKING VAMPIRE!"
"And there went my hearing," Janus groaned. There was no convincing Remus it seemed.
---------------
Roman happily cuddled Virgil in the vampires bedroom as they waited for his roommates to show back up. He nuzzled his nose into Virgil's neck while humming. "Virgil?"
His boyfriend turned to face him. "Hhm?"
Roman pressed a kiss to his boyfriends' neck. "Can you please bite me?" He whined.
Virgil let out a shuddering breath. "Roman, stooooop."
Roman grinned against the other's skin. "I don't hear a no."
Virgil whined, his face red as he buried his face into his boyfriend's hair. "What if we get caught?"
Roman's grin widened. "We can be quick. Just a quick bite and then we make out a bit before they get here."
Virgil groaned. "Your offer is very tempting….but," Virgil closed his eyes with a sigh. "Are you sure you're ready? I don't want to hurt you."
Roman sat up and positioned himself on Virgil's lap and stared down at the vampire seriously. "Virgil, I am 100% ready. If you asked me to marry you, right now, I would tell you that I'm ready. I'm ready, Virgil. I trust you. And I'm ready to prove it."
Virgil blinked away tears. "Roman-" he choked.
Roman took Virgil's face in his hands. "I love you, Virgil." He leaned forward and rested his forehead against the others'.
Virgil sighed. "Roman, I-" He stopped. It was silent for a few moments.
"It's okay. I understand if you're not there or you're not ready to say it yet. It's okay."
Virgil shook his head. "No, that's not it. It's just- I didn't expect this. I love you, too." He smiled. "You're still sure you're ready?"
Roman nodded. "Yes, Stormcloud, I'm ready."
Virgil laughed softly and pressed a quick kiss to the others lips. "Where-" he flushed red with embarrassment. Relax, Virgil. You're just asking your boyfriend where he wants you to bite him. Virgil's blush deepened. That didn't make it any better! Oh my Selene this is too intimate! I'm going to die from this!
Roman looked at Virgil smugly. "What was that?" He asked innocently.
"Fuck you! You know what I'm trying to ask!"
Roman paused and tapped his chin thoughtfully. "Hhm, I'm not quite sure I do. Could you help me out?" Virgil growled and opened his mouth to speak only for Roman to chuckle deeply and lean closer to him. "I think you know exactly where I want you to bite me. Here, let me help you." He laid his head on Virgil's shoulder revealing his neck for Virgil to bite.
Virgil whined. "You're gonna be the death of me, Roman."
Roman grinned. "You love me."
Virgil sighed. "Yeah, I do." He held Roman' hand and leaned forward. Pressing a gentle kiss to the others neck he said, "Are you ready my Prince?"
Roman suppressed a shudder. "Yeah," he said breathlessly.
Virgil leaned forward and gently pierced the skin before beginning to draw in the red substance. Roman felt dizzy in all the right ways. He let go of Virgil's hand and wrapped his arms around the other as if that would hold him there. Virgil sighed and nuzzled the other's neck with his nose before licking the wound to reseal it. Roman giggled and let the other pull him into his embrace as he leaned back on the bed.
They were silent for a few moments. Virgil slowly twisted his fingers through Roman's hair, playing with it to keep himself from panicking that he had somehow messed up and Roman didn't like him anymore. He tried to push those thoughts out of his head. "How are you feeling, Darling?"
Roman smiled lazily. "Like I'm in heaven."
Virgil snorted. "Wow, even with a little bit of blood loss you're still a raging sap."
Roman's smile widened into a grin. He pushed himself up and straddled Virgil's waist. "I believe I was promised a make out session." Virgil giggled and Roman swooped down to press their lips together, effectively stifling the vampire's laughter. Roman grinned. "You're so fucking adorable."
Virgil smiled brightly up at him. "Not as adorable as you."
"Why you-!" Roman exclaimed and tackled Virgil with more kisses.
---------------
Remus pouted with his arms crossed as Logan reached forward and pressed the doorbell. The resulting sound rang out loudly throughout the house. The sound ended and the four young adults stood in an awkward silence for a few moments.
"It's such a lovely house!" Patton exclaimed brightly in an attempt to break the icy tension that had settled between them all. Remus huffed. Janus rolled his eyes but held his tongue. Then the door opened. Remus gasped.
"Roman! You're okay!" He grabbed his brother's arm and tried to pull him with him so they could run. Roman didn't budge.
"Of course, I'm okay." He yanked his arm out of his brother's grip and stepped back. "Come on in. We have to talk."
Remus frowned. "I don't understand. If he's threatening you or hurting you, then why haven't you told me? We can help!"
Roman sighed. "I've already told you before Remus, he's not a monster. Come on and see for yourself." Remus folded his arms over his chest and stayed put.  Roman rolled his eyes. "Seriously?"
Patton and Janus shared a glance before stepping forward and going inside. Logan watched Remus for a few moments before following them. Finally, Remus followed them after letting out a frustrated sigh. Roman closed the door once they all were inside and smiled uneasily at them. "Thank you. It really means a lot to me that you're willing to give him a chance." His brother scoffed. He sighed. "Follow me."
Roman led the others into the living room where they found Virgil sitting on the floor and sorting through boxes. He looked up with a cautious smile. "Hello, its-" he paused and glanced at his position before jumping up and dusting imaginary dirt off his clothes. It was different actually talking to Roman's family considering all that had happened that day. But he still wanted to make a good impression on them. It was almost like he was meeting Roman's parents and that caused his anxiety to spike. "It's nice to meet you."
Remus, Logan, and Janus stayed quiet while Patton smiled and responded. "It's nice to finally meet you! I'm Patton!" He held out a hand for Virgil to shake but Remus yanked it back. Patton frowned at him as hurt flashed across Virgil's eyes. It's not like he did anything wrong.
Roman let out a frustrated sigh. "Come on, Remus. Give Virgil a chance and stop acting like he's a monster." Virgil flinched at the word and his boyfriend came over to him concerned.
Remus let out a loud laugh. "You have got to be kidding me!" He flung a hand at Virgil. "He kidnapped you not even three hours ago!"
Roman stared at his brother in shock. "No! He didn't! I left with him!"
Remus opened his mouth to reply only to freeze as he noticed a fresh bite mark on his brother. He snapped with a growl and pulled out a dagger he had hidden on him when he first found out his brother was dating a vampire. He rushed propelled himself forward and buried the blade into Virgil's chest. He pulled it back out as he stepped back.
Everyone froze. Virgil frowned as he looked down to find blood soaking through his shirt. He quickly became well aware that he hadn't had any blood since yesterday evening, aside from the small bit he took from Roman not too long ago. He didn't have enough blood at that moment to heal a wound of this size. He dropped to his knees.
"Virgil!" Roman exclaimed and dropped down beside him. He pushed him back to lean against the couch as he inspected the wound only to blanch at the amount of blood soaking through the others shirt. "Oh my God! No! Wha?! Virgil what do I do?!?!?!" He pressed down on the wound as Virgil winced.
"Remus! What the Fuck!" Janus yelled behind them as he pulled Patton into his embrace so the other could bury his face in his chest.
Remus stared down at Virgil unsure. "I-I don't-"
Virgil let out a ragged breath as Logan stepped forward with a towel he had found in the bathroom and handed it to Roman. "Here, press this down on the wound. I'll call the ambulance."
"No!" Virgil shouted.
Everyone stopped to stare at him. "I-stormcloud? Wha?"
Virg coughed. "I-in my fridge downstairs, I need blood." He paused to draw in more breath. "I don't have enough to heal properly."
Roman's eyes blew wide as Logan immediately ran to get the blood. "But, you just had some! I thought you were taking enough! Wha? Why didn't you take more?"
"Didn't want to take too much."
Roman frowned and stayed silent as Logan ran back in and handed him the blog bag. He handed it to Virgil as he quickly bit into it and sucked down the blood. He kept an eye on the wound and watched it close slowly. Virgil sat up slowly and inspected his chest to make sure the wound was gone. Then Roman slapped him. Virgil blinked. "Don't ever do that again!" He instantly latched onto Virgil and buried his face in the other's neck. "I was so scared, stormcloud." Tears began to fall from his eyes. "I thought you were going to die."
Virgil's eyes softened as he looked at Roman. "I'm sorry. I won't do it again. I promise, my dear."
Remus stood off to the side awkwardly. After a few moments Roman reluctantly sat up and took a deep breath before turning to Remus with a death glare. He stayed silent. Remus looked down and let out a breath. "I'm sorry, Roman. I should have listened to you and given him a chance." He turned to Virgil. "I'm sorry, Virgil. I shouldn't have stabbed you."
Virgil bit his lip. "It's okay, I forgive you."
Roman shook his head. "I'm very upset with you right now. I can't forgive you yet. But I accept you apology." He buried his face back into Virgil's neck.
Virgil cleared his throat and stood up with Roman in his arms. "We're going to go lay down." He looked between the four humans before him and then back at the blood left on the floor. He bit his lip. "Um, if you could clean that up, please. I'd really appreciate it. I can order pizza later or whatever y'all want just give us a bit to nap." He smiled at them and left the room with Roman.
The four men looked at each other. Janus asked, "Did that just happen?"

the only exception
Title: the only exception
Word Count: 4,549
Summary: College!AU, Musician!AU. Patton shows up to a music festival that Virgil—along with his twin brother, Roman—is headlining, hoping to surprise him. Turns out, it’s Virgil that surprises him first. Romantic Moxiety, brief background Logince. Song-fic.
Warnings: lots of fluff and softness and sappiness, mutual pining elements, declarations of love, description of crowds, cursing, discussion of anxiety, mention of anxiety attacks, kissing, Virgil “writes” a song that’s actually written irl by Paramore but ssshhh Paramore doesn’t exist in this AU, please let me know if I forgot anything.
A/N: Someone on tumblr once made a textpost that said “The Only Exception” was a Moxiety song, and weeks later I listened to it and realized they were right. And then I had this image in my head that wouldn’t go away for like. Months. And then eventually I decided to write this. It’s basically a song-fic. Crazy self-indulgent, heh. Also, I’ve never written Romantic Moxiety before, nor have I written a Patton-POV focused fic. So writing this was a whole boatload of new. I hope it turned out okay! Edited by yours truly, so all mistakes are mine.
You can listen to the song Virgil sings at the end here!

Present. March. Junior Year.
Patton shoulders his way through the crowd as rock music blares loudly over the speakers. The late March air is cool, and the breeze tugs at the COLLEGE-PALOOZA MUSIC FEST banner hanging from the amphitheater’s stage. A few people he recognizes from his classes wave to him as they nod their head to the music. Patton slows as he finds a small gap in the crowd, not particularly keen on getting into the tightly packed mosh pit that had formed right in front of the stage.
The sun is beginning to set, casting the sky in a light purple hue. Perhaps ironically, it reminds Patton of the guy he’s actually here to see perform. Patton glances at the stage, but there’s no sign of him. He checks his phone for the time. The group was supposed to be on now, but perhaps he’d missed them already.
He looks at the guy beside him—leather jacket and sunglasses, holding a Starbucks cup—and asks over the music, “Which group is this?”
The guy takes a long swallow and then jerks his head towards the stage. “Planets Align. They had trouble getting the sound system working, so they’re running behind.”
Patton nods his understanding, smiles, and thanks him. Planets Align was scheduled to go on right before them, if the pamphlet he’d found on Virgil’s desk was anything to go by. He’d felt terrible at the time when he realized that the band Virgil had formed with his twin brother, Roman, would be headlining a music festival the same day Patton had already promised to help with a group project.
But the other members of his group canceled the meeting earlier today and rescheduled it for next week. So Patton really didn’t see any reason why he couldn’t come support Virgil. And if he maybe didn’t tell Virge in the hopes of being able to surprise him… well.
Besides, he had a feeling Virgil could use a nice surprise. He’d seemed really nervous about the festival when Patton was talking to him about it when he found the pamphlet. Virgil often seemed nervous, but… more nervous than even Virgil’s normal.
Patton smiles a bit to himself when he remembers when they first met.
September. Sophomore year.
“For the purposes of this research presentation, I will allow you to choose partners. We will need one group of three, but that certainly seems manageable.”
Patton glances around the stuffy lecture hall. It was only the third time the class had met, so Patton hadn’t had the opportunity to talk to many of his classmates yet. On top of that, it was a pretty big class. Patton had a feeling that he wouldn’t know everybody even by the end of the year. The professor waves her hand to indicate that they should select a partner and begin discussing the project.
Chatter rose up—most people leaning over towards people they were sitting next to, a few calling to friends across the room—and there was shuffling movement and the scraping of chairs as students milled about to find a research partner. Then Patton caught sight of a black and purple hoodie in the back row.
What was his name? Patton couldn’t remember, despite the ice breaker during their first class. He does remember the snort the guy had released when Patton had made a pun about his name when introducing himself. He also remembers the way he’d immediately ducked his head a second later when Patton grinned at him.
Patton gathers his things and squeezes through his classmates. “Hey,” he says. The guy in the hoodie looks up, seeming startled. “Wanna be partners?”
The guy blinks at him, then shifts in his seat and motions to the empty chair on the other side of his desk. “Uh, yeah. Sure.”
“I’m Patton, by the way.”
“Virgil. What, uh, what are you studying?”
Patton pulls his laptop out of his bag. “Oh! I’m an early education major. What about you?” As he asks, Patton casts a quick glance at the laptop in front of Virgil and notices the stickers on it: SANDERS in messy black scrawl, a thundercloud with a bolt of lightning, a small circle with a paint-smear style gay pride flag, and a few music notes.
“Graphic design with a minor in music,” he replies. Patton notices him glancing at the buttons on Patton’s backpack that he threw in the empty chair beside him—some about cats, some about dogs, a heart with glasses that he thought was cute, and a pride pin from last year’s Pride week.
“That’s pretty cool. You play music?”
Virgil lifts a shoulder. “With my brother, mostly.”
“Wow. That’s… really awesome,” Patton says, sincerely impressed. He’d always loved music, but really only dabbled in the ukulele. He’d always thought musicians were cool: having skills like that took a lot of work, and a lot of dedication. That seemed pretty admirable to Patton.
Virgil smirks. “If you say so.”
“I do. I mean it.” For a fleeting moment, Virgil looks taken aback by the insistence in Patton’s voice. “What do you play?”
Present.
“Roman is totally the hot one,” Patton hears a girl behind him say to her friends.
“Elliot thinks he has a crush on Logan Berry, you know.”
“He’s gay?” The girl sounds surprised, but not hostile.
“Ace, I think. Panromantic, if the stickers on his laptop are anything to go by.” Patton recognizes that voice as one of the girls in the LGBTQ+ club that Patton was secretary for.
“You have class with him?”
“We had English 100 together freshman year. Elliot’s in class with him and Logan, though, and says they want to gag literally any time the two so much as talk to each other.”
Patton grins to himself. Subtlety when he had a crush had never really been Roman’s strong suit. That was another place where Virgil was markedly different from his twin brother. Both Roman and Virgil had ways of keeping their distance from others, but where Roman put up a front of fearlessness and confidence and friendliness… Virgil seemed more likely to withdraw into himself.
Patton had learned that, and many other things about Virgil, slowly as meetings for the research project gradually developed into hanging out regularly and casually. Patton picked up on things about Virgil relatively quickly. He gets quiet and irritable when he’s actually anxious about something. He tends to catastrophize, especially when it comes to academics. He hasn’t yet learned how to accept compliments—something Patton didn’t let deter him from giving them. He hopes that the more he’s able to expose Virgil to them, the easier it will eventually get for him to accept them.
Patton learned that Virgil is fiercely protective, too. The fastest way for Virgil to overcome his anxiety about a situation is usually when it’s related to someone he cares about. He still remembers the fire that had alighted in his eyes when someone had started harassing Roman when he, Patton, Roman, and Logan had been heading back from a party on a Friday night a couple of months ago. Logan had been the one to diffuse that particular situation, but Patton hadn’t missed the way Virgil hovered closer to his brother and looked ready to fight when he’d seen the shaken look in Roman’s eyes.
But then there were the softer moments from Virgil, too. The fleeting moments when Patton saw something gentle and relaxed from him that a secret part of Patton liked to believe were just for him. They were a sign of trust from Virgil, and Patton had always cherished that trust precisely because it was so rare.
   …
April. Sophomore year.
“What time is it?” Virgil asks with a yawn. He’s sitting on the floor of his dorm, his guitar in his hands. His back is leaned up against the drawers of his desk. Patton sits on the floor across from him with his back against the cinderblock wall and his legs stretched out in front of him.
Patton digs his phone out of his pocket and checks. “Almost 1 in the morning.”
Virgil nods and strums a few chords softly. “You’re welcome to stick around, Patton, but… y’know. It’s chill if you’d rather go home.”
Patton shakes his head “I like it here,” he says. For reasons he is still figuring out, there’s nowhere else he’d rather be.
Patton watches him; he watches the way Virgil’s bangs fall in a soft sweep across his face, the dark eyeshadow smudged under his eyes, the slight parting of his lips as he mouths unheard lyrics. He always loves watching Virgil play guitar. There’s something about watching him hold the light brown acoustic instrument—like it steadies him, like it’s a shield that protects him—that Patton can’t help but love. Virgil seems to… breathe easier when he has a guitar in his hands.
“Virgil? Can I ask you something?” Patton says suddenly.
Virgil glances quickly at him, then back down at the guitar in his hands. Avoiding his eyes. “Yeah. Sure.” His voice sounds oddly tight to Patton.
“Why do you play music?”
The question seems to catch him off guard. Virgil stops short for a moment, glancing back up at Patton. His hands still against the instrument, his eyes flit away in thought.
Then—to Patton’s surprise—he sets the guitar aside.
“It… gives me a space where I can… connect, I guess?” He rubs the back of his head, glancing at Patton as if unsure whether or not his own words made sense.
“Connect?”
“Well,” Virgil pulls his knees up to his chest and rests his chin on top of them, “Yeah. I’ve never been good at… at the whole…” He waves a hand and sighs. “At the whole ‘words’ thing that’s required for making friends or helping someone or… whatever. I’m always afraid I’m gonna say the wrong thing, or make them feel awkward, or… shit, I don’t know. But music is different. It…” He huffs a frustrated sigh as the words escape him. Then he tosses Patton a wry smile. “See what I mean? Words aren’t really my thing. Music is different, though.”
Patton nods. He glances around at the MCR and Dear Evan Hansen poster on walls of Virgil’s side of the room. “I think I get it. Music lets you speak from where you are emotionally at a given moment, and people can come to you—or your music—to find that connection and community. It… lets you express yourself, and by doing that, lets you connect to other people.”
When Patton looks back at Virgil, he’s looking at him with something like disbelief. But there’s a softness and light in his eyes that makes Patton’s stomach flutter. “Yeah,” Virgil says eventually. “Exactly.” Patton meets his gaze with a small smile, even as he feels suddenly like Virgil can see all the parts of himself that he wants to hide.
The corner of Virgil’s mouth quirks slightly and he digs a small purple leather notepad out of his back pocket. He grabs a pen from the top of his desk and scribbles something down.
“Whatcha writing?” Patton asks curiously.
Virgil folds it and slips it back into his pocket. “Nothing, Pat.” He still has that soft kind of smile and look in his eyes even as he grabs his guitar and pulls it back into his lap.
Present.
“Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Planets Align!” The emcee shouts into the mic as he runs on stage and the band waves as they exit to the cheers of the crowd. Patton applauds them and briefly considers moving closer to the stage before deciding against it. He’d never done well with tight crowds.
The sun has dipped below the horizon now, the sky darkening quickly. The lights from the stage bleed out onto the grass clearing, providing some lighting of the crowd itself as well. The air is a bit colder now, but Patton doesn’t mind. Besides, all the people around him moving and dancing have helped keep it from getting too cold anyway.
“Next up, the ones you’ve all been waiting for. Let’s hear it for… SANDERS!”
Patton lets out a cheer as the crowd screams. He sees Virgil’s twin brother—though you’d never know it from how differently they do make up and their hair—run on stage with his arms up to encourage the crowd’s response. The cheers get louder, and Roman grins and strikes a hero pose. He’s energized. Patton smiles at his evident excitement.
Virgil follows behind him, an electric guitar strapped to his back. Even from his distance from the stage, Patton can see him shaking his head at his brother’s antics. He gives a small, appreciative wave to the crowd. His eyes scan it, and a part of Patton can’t help but wonder if he’s looking for him someone.
Reasoning, though, reminds him that Virgil said he always tries to get a feel for the size of a crowd when he goes out on stage at a venue for the first time. It had started as a nervous thing—how many people might see me fail?—but as Virgil’s confidence in performing grew, it had mostly just become a habit.
“What is UP, everybody?” Roman says into the mic. He’s wearing a bright red leather jacket with a white shirt underneath, shiny gold skinny jeans, and red high top converse. “We’re so glad you could come out tonight. How about this awesome weather, yeah?”
More cheers. Patton watches as Virgil pulls the guitar from around his back with a smile. He’s in his familiar hoodie, purple shirt, black ripped skinny jeans, and his black sneakers with purple laces. At first glance, he doesn’t seem too nervous—Patton had long ago gotten in the habit of glancing at him to check if he’s okay when he knows Virgil might be getting anxious—but it’s hard to tell from this distance.
“My brother, Virgil, and I thought we’d kick things off with an original song. How’s that sound, guys, gals, and nonbinary pals?”  There’s louder cheering, and the two of them waste no time starting a song that Patton remembers from previous concerts of theirs he’d attended.
November. Junior Year.
Patton’s phone dings while he’s eating lunch in the student union and flipping through an education textbook to study for his quiz tomorrow on Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development. Exams are quickly approaching, and Patton had always struggled to remember theorists’ names for some reason.
It’s a text from Roman. Is V with you?
Patton frowns and types back quickly. No. It’s Tuesday. Then he sends a second text. Why?
The student union is bustling with students breezing through to grab lunch before rushing off to the library or their class. Groups are clustered around tables to hash out the details of final projects as their deadlines approach in the next week or two. Exhausted English majors slump over their stale coffee cups and computers as they edit their final paper for the eighth time. Engineering students running on caffeine and spite chug another energy drink before hurrying off to the lab building. A couple others that Patton can see are watching Netflix in a desperate attempt to give themselves a break before plunging back into the grind of end-of-the-semester assignments.
Roman’s reply comes almost immediately. He sent me a single letter text which usually means he’s freaking out but idek where he is
Patton stands up and forgets his half-eaten sandwich, dropping it in the compost bin as he slings his backpack over his shoulder and hurries out of the building. Have you tried calling him?  He texts quickly.
R: Yeah. No response… just lemme know if you see him or if he texts you or something ok
Patton rolls his eyes. As if he’s just going to go about his day and not try to help. Especially if V might be freaking out. We’ll find him, Roman. You check the science center and I’ll check the music floor of Stokes Hall.
R: ok.
R: Thanks
Patton turns his ringer on at full volume and braces against the cold air as he hurries to the building beside the Student Union. The November air is biting. Students bustle with their noses tucked into their scarves and red fingers curled around coffee cups. There was no snow on the ground, but the grass still crunches under Patton’s shoes as he hurries across the quad towards Stokes Hall. His light blue beanie is pulled low over his light brown hair.
He’s wishing he had a scarf to hide his nose in—instead opting to try to tuck it into the sleeves of the sweatshirt tied around his shoulders—when he walks straight into someone.
“Shit! I’m so sorry—”
“Virgil?” Patton asks, immediately recognizing the voice. He looks up, and Virgil seems frozen for a moment. It only takes Patton a second to realize that his eyes are red and sunken slightly. His usual sweep of hair is a disheveled mess under the hood of his sweatshirt that engulfs his frame.
If Patton’s being honest, he looks… rough. Concern twists in Patton’s chest.
“I’m so sorry, Patton. I’m an idiot, I just wasn’t watching where—”
“Hey, it’s all good, Virge,” Patton says, quickly but sincerely. He places his hands on Virgil’s shoulder to anchor him. “Breathe.”
Virgil laughs but it’s humorless and shrugs out from under his grip. Patton frowns. “I’m fine. I know I look like a mess, but really. It’s fine now. I was just. Um. Coming outside for some air.”
Patton considers the deflection and decides to meet Virgil half-way. “I could use some too.”
“You don’t have to do that—”
“Honest, V. The cold air is kind of nice.” Patton slips his phone out of his pocket and sends a quick text to Roman. Got him. He offers a small, reassuring smile to Virgil.“ You wanna take a seat?”
Virgil meets his gaze, then glances away. He seems to think about it for a moment, then relents with a slight sag to his shoulders. “Sure. Fine.”
Patton wanders over to a bench across the pathway and takes a seat. He looks around as students rush quickly towards their classes, smiling brightly as a service dog trots dutifully beside his owner and pushes the button to open the door as the student hurries inside. He intentionally keeps his gaze from lingering on Virgil, even as he hesitates before sitting beside him.
Virgil waits until most of the students have rushed off before breaking the silence between them. “You aren’t going to ask?”
Patton glances over at him. “I didn’t want to make you uncomfortable, and you seemed reluctant to talk about it…. Should I ask?”
“No. Yes?” Virgil groans, zipping up his hoodie against the chilly air. “It wasn’t anything like. That bad. Y’know? I just get… anxiety attacks sometimes, and sometimes they get…” He trails off. Patton senses more than sees the way Virgil glances quickly at him. “Anyway. I’m fine now.”
Patton isn’t sure what to say. He’d known for a long time now that Virgil struggled with anxiety. That Virgil had anxiety attacks doesn’t exactly surprise him, and it definitely isn’t off-putting or anything of the sort. But Patton hates the way Virgil keeps trying to deflect… something. Judgement. Concern. Patton suddenly and fiercely wishes Virgil would just let someone care about him. Let someone love him.
Patton thinks maybe he already does.
“Virgil….” Patton says softly, looking at his hands folded between his knees, “It’s okay. You know that, right? You can talk to me about it. And I’m not gonna judge you or think you’re weird or that there’s anything wrong with you.”
“I… I’m fine.”
Patton lifts a shoulder. “Okay. But… it’s okay if you aren’t, too. And either way… you’re definitely not alone. You know? You know Roman’s there for you, but… but I am too. I care about you.”
In his peripheral, he sees Virgil look at him. “Patton—”
“There you guys are!” Roman exclaims as he jogs up to the two of them. Patton smiles at Virgil—who looks, for all the world, like the ground has shifted underneath him.
Patton wants to ask him why. He never does.
Present.
SANDERS has played through five songs, which means they’re nearing the end of their set. Patton is beaming. Virgil and Roman play off each other so well, and their music seems to be a blend of both of them in a way. They balance each other on stage. They’re fun to watch. Patton can’t help but think, though he may be biased, that if they really wanted to… they could make a career out of it.
But then they do something that surprises Patton, and apparently everyone else too from the way the crowd starts to murmur.
Virgil trades out his electric guitar for his light brown acoustic one. Roman grabs a wooden stool from one of the wings and sets it in the middle of the stage. Virgil adjusts the strap of the guitar around his shoulders, nodding his thanks to Roman.
“So I hope you all don’t mind if we close out with something a little different than our usual pace,” Virgil is saying into the wireless mic attached to him. “But I lost a bet against Roman, and that means I gotta do this.”
“If I lost I was gonna have to wear jorts for this concert. You all should be thanking me,” Roman quips back through his own mic. There’s a chuckle from Virgil as well as the crowd.
“Yeah, well. This is a song I wrote over the course of… probably about a year. It’s about someone very… important to me. He couldn’t be here tonight, but… he’s pretty great. Anyway, it’s a little different, so uh.” Even under the stage lights, Patton thinks he can see Virgil flushing slightly. “I hope you all like it.”
Virgil starts strumming and all Patton can do is watch him, transfixed by the sound of an acoustic guitar and the sight of Virgil under a spotlight on stage. It’s a much softer song already than any other song in their entire set. Virgil ducks his head slightly, his black sneaker tapping out the ¾ meter. And then Virgil starts to sing.
“When I was younger I saw my daddy cry, and curse at the wind.
He broke his own heart and I watched as he tried to reassemble it.
And my momma swore that she would never let herself forget.
And that was the day that I promised I’d never sing of love if it does not exist.
But darlin’ you are the only exception. You are the only exception…”
As Virgil sings, Patton can’t help but feel rooted to the spot. Virgil sitting and playing his acoustic guitar reminds Patton suddenly of that moment again back in Virgil’s dorm room. That moment of honesty and openness from him that always felt so rare. Patton feels like he’s experiencing that again, despite the crowd and the spotlights. Because this is not performance-Virgil, this is just…. Virgil. At his most honest. At his mot exposed. And it’s breathtaking.
Patton doesn’t even fully realize that he’s moving closer to the stage until he almost trips over a girl that’s swaying and holding her phone with a flashlight up in the air.
Virgil breaks into the second verse, and Patton feels his stomach fluttering all over again at the sound of his voice.
“Well maybe I know somewhere deep in my soul that love never lasts.
And we’ve got to find other ways to make it alone or keep a straight face.
And I’ve always lived like this. Keeping a comfortable distance.
And up until now I had sworn to myself that I’m content with loneliness,
‘Cuz none of it was ever worth the risk.
Well you are the only exception. You are the only exception…”
And a part of Patton—a part he’s afraid to admit to—suddenly starts to grow insistent with the realization that he might be really, truly, unequivocally in love with the person singing on the stage in this moment. The one with his bangs falling into eyes that had always looked to Patton to be a little bit afraid and a lot brave.
This song, this moment, is no exception to that. Music, for Virgil, had always started from some place deeply personal. It is what allows him to connect to others, after all. And Patton doesn’t know if the song is about him, but he wants it to be. Because that deeply personal space that Virgil is singing from resonates with Patton in a way that leaves only one thought repeating in his head. I love you, I love you, I love you.
Almost as if he hears the thought itself, Virgil looks up and starts scanning the crowd again as he reaches the bridge.
“I’ve got a tight grip on reality
But I can’t let go of what’s in front of me here.” He’s scanning, scanning, scanning…
“I know you’re leaving in the morning. When you wake up,
Leave me with some kind of proof it’s not a dream. Oh…”
And then his eyes settle squarely on Patton, and Patton swears he hears the very faint catch of Virgil’s breath through the mic.
Patton gives him a small, faint smile. There’s a brief moment where uncertainty flickers through Virgil’s dark eyes, and then something sets firmly in them. As if he’s made some kind of split-second decision. Virgil stands up from the stool and starts making his way towards the stage stairs, continuing to play and sing as he does so.
“You are the only exception. You are the only exception….”
Patton loses sight of him as he steps down to ground level, the crowd blocking his view. But Virgil keeps singing that line over and over, you are the only exception, as if imploring Patton to hear it and understand it and know it is meant for him. As if perhaps Virgil has to repeat it himself to fully believe in its truth, but each time he sings it, Patton can hear the conviction growing. Far ahead of him, Patton can see people shifting around in the mosh pit in front of him.
Patton doesn’t move. He doesn’t think he knows how to.
And then through the crowd of people in front of him steps Virgil, still playing. Still singing. And Patton can’t help but notice his eyes look wide and scared and vulnerable—but unwavering—as he sings the final line.
“But I’m on my way to believing…”
He plays the final chord and stands there, looking up at Patton. He’s so close. The guitar and a few inches is all that separates them. Patton swallows past the lump in his throat and brings a hand up to cup Virgil’s jaw before leaning his forehead against Virgil’s and whispering.
“Can I kiss you?”
His eyes are closed, so he doesn’t see Virgil’s relieved, crooked grin. But he feels it when Virgil presses his lips to his own.

Chapter 62: Sometimes I Can’t See Myself
Rating: T Fandom: The 100 Pairing: Bellamy x Clarke Chapter: 62/66 Word Count: 3100 Words
Chapter Summary: The one where Octavia wants to celebrate Bellamy’s cast removal in a strange, misguided way.
Also on AO3;  Start from the beginning on AO3
It was time to take his cast off too soon. Bellamy had grown fond of the cartoon Roman war Clarke had created. It was silly, but having it with him every day was almost a reminder that there was hope for them. After all, she took the time to draw something amazing. People didn’t do that for just anyone.
In the end, he went the less obvious route and settled for taking a few pictures of it on his cell phone.
Octavia seemed to be even more excited than he was to celebrate his freedom from cast and bandages. She wanted to set up an easy hike, because she knew his ribs still hurt a bit if he exerted himself too much. It took a couple days for him to relent. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to go on the hike, but Clarke was still avoiding any one-on-one conversations, so he was a little (constantly) annoyed.
Before the kiss, she would have called shotgun in his car. He almost called her out in front of everyone, but she announced loudly that she needed to ride with Raven and Roan so that they wouldn’t crash the car trying to kill each other or breaking down and finally making out. The statement hit a little too close to home for him, so he didn’t argue as Octavia, Lincoln, and Wells piled into his car instead. The others piled into two cars and then they were off.
That was the first red flag. It was too many cars when no one had anywhere to be afterward, but they were already on their way and Bellamy was sure he was being paranoid.
Octavia had actually picked one of his favorite hikes; a three-and-a-half mile trail up to a waterfall. It was a hike he did on his own if he was in the mood for one and no one else could go. It was also one that he kept almost taking Clarke on, except it felt a little too romantic, so he always chickened out.
That was the second red flag. He did his best to ignore the alarms blaring in his head by falling to the back of the group, but Wells noticed and followed. While Clarke had been avoiding Bellamy, Bellamy had actually been avoiding Wells. At least one-on-one. And he couldn’t exactly sprint to get ahead without looking suspicious, so he nodded as Wells joined him.
“Are you doing okay?”
Bellamy felt a flash of guilt. He nodded again, unsure how to justify himself when he usually led the way. “I’m just trying to take it easy. Clarke will lose it if I push myself too hard.”
Wells nodded and for a moment, Bellamy thought he was in the clear. Until he realized he opened the door to talk about Clarke. “Does this mean that you’re ready to talk about whatever’s been going on with you two?”
All guilt Bellamy felt disappeared. “I’ve told you too many times. We’re fine.”
“Yeah, you sure seem fine.”
“Well, I’m recovering from a car accident. I think I still have some leeway with feeling less fine than everyone else.”
Wells scoffed. “You know that isn’t what I mean.”
“And you know that I’m not going to talk about it.”
Wells stopped in his tracks. Bellamy tried to keep going, but Wells grabbed his arm. “Dude, you are one of my best friends and I’ve known Clarke since before we were in diapers. I know when something’s up, especially when you’re both pulling this evasive shit.”
“I’m not being—”
“Bullshit. You’ve been miserable lately and you’re avoiding me. So is Clarke. And you’re avoiding each other. How am I not supposed to pick up on this?”
“I’m not avoiding Clarke. It’s the other way around,” Bellamy snapped before he could pull it together.
Wells raised his eyebrows. “Wow, you’re easier to break than I thought. I owe Octavia ten bucks.”
Bellamy rolled his eyes and started walking again, but Wells was right behind him.
“Listen, we all have our theories.” Bellamy turned to protest. Wells continued before he could say anything. “Really though, all I want to know is who I need to talk some sense into. Knowing her, I’d say you asked her out and she freaked, but I need confirmation and you know she’d never say anything.”
“You don’t need to talk sense into anyone.”
“Well, someone needs—”
“We can handle our own shit, Wells.”
Bellamy increased his pace a little, making his way through the group until he was at the front with Clarke again. She glanced at him and concern washed over her face. “Are you okay? Was this too much too soon?”
He couldn’t help but smile a little, but it was quick, because he was still annoyed. “I’m fine. We just have nosy friends.”
Clarke glanced back at the group and shook her head as she turned her attention back to the front. He thought he heard her mutter something about invasive assholes, but semi-awkwardness settled over them again. It was still better than walking with Wells.
The group made it to the waterfall without any additional forced conversations. Bellamy sat with Miller while Jasper tried to splash everyone who came near the river and Clarke hovered at the edge of the group. She had seemed wary since he started walking with her earlier and when Clarke was nervous, Bellamy was nervous, too.
Still, when Octavia suggested that everyone see the view from the top of the waterfall, it felt normal. Since Bellamy felt pretty good (physically, at least… emotionally was another story), there was no reason to say no. Of course, it should have been the third red flag. Octavia needed Bellamy to lead the way, because he’d been on the hike multiple times and it felt normal for Clarke to walk with him.
About halfway up the trail, Bellamy realized it was too quiet. All ambient chatter that had followed him most of the way through the wilderness was gone. He looked over at Clarke who seemed to be experiencing the same realization. They both turned around at the same time.
Bellamy tried to imagine a time in his life where the fact that all of their friends were gone would have surprised him at least a little. It might have been funny a few months ago, but he was so sick of people trying to force him into action.
“We clearly need new friends,” Bellamy attempted to joke as he turned to Clarke. As soon as he spoke, her entire body tensed up, and he was angry again. “Why do you do that?”
“Do what?” Her voice was resigned and a little shaky.
“You can’t even be alone with me without freezing up.” It seemed impossible, but she tensed up more with every word he said. It was frustrating and it hurt and everything from the past few weeks wanted to spill out of him. “You won’t be alone with me and this feels broken, but then we’re in front of other people and you’re practically in my lap and—”
“We have always been—”
“No, Clarke, it’s different! It’s different and you know it! You were fine until….” Bellamy realized he was yelling and trailed off. Clarke glared at him and spun rapidly to start walking down the hill. He hesitated for a moment before he followed her. As much as it pissed him off that Octavia or Wells or both had forced them into this situation, he couldn’t give up on the chance to finally talk. “Will you please just talk to me, Clarke? We need to fix this.”
She stopped and he almost slammed into her back. When she turned around, she gasped at the proximity and he took a quick step back. “Bellamy, just stop. Please. I want things to go back to normal.”
“But, they—”
“Don’t say they can’t! You are my best friend. Your sister is one of my best friends. Whatever this is that we’re feeling? It’s wrong and I refuse to jeopardize the group dynamic over a little crush. You guys are my family, Bellamy. I can’t lose you, okay? It isn’t worth the risk!”
Bellamy stared down at her, at a loss for words as her last declaration rang through the forest. Clarke glared a challenge at him, daring him to tell her that she was wrong. There were too many things he wanted to say. He wanted to tell her that she would never lose him or Octavia or any of their friends if things didn’t work out, but the words wouldn’t come. It wasn’t because they weren’t true, but he knew she wouldn’t believe them.
Instead of saying anything, he brushed past her and started back down the trail. Slowly. He didn’t pick up the pace until he heard her footsteps behind him.
They walked back down the trail in silence. Ideas for romantic declarations came and went. Bellamy wanted to tell her that, at least for him, it wasn’t a ‘little crush’ and he had probably been half in love with her since they met. The way she stood up to him in a way no one else ever had… it had always been intriguing. And frustrating. But intoxicating.
The longer he put off trying to change her mind, the more closed off she became. By the time they made it to the parking lot, where of course only his car was left, he could almost see the walls she had built up again. She grumbled something not very flattering about his sister, but Bellamy didn’t protest. He was essentially in agreement, even if he would never vocalize it.
Bellamy put some music on to fill the silence as they drove. Clarke leaned her elbow on the window and stared out into the distance. When he pulled in at a gas station, she barely glanced over. His hand was on the door handle when she spoke. “I’m going inside to get something. Do you want anything?”
“Surprise me,” he mumbled.
She frowned, but left him alone. He set up the gas pump and then stepped away from the car to pull out his phone. Octavia answered before the first ring finished.
“I thought you two would be up there for a while.”
“I cannot believe that you all ditched us like that, Octavia. What were you thinking?”
“You and Clarke have been acting weird for at least a month. You haven’t been stalking her while she’s working in her studio, she stopped studying at your place. We all agree it’s annoying, so we thought we’d get you into a situation where none of us were left to hide behind.”
Bellamy pressed his fingers to his temple. “Seriously, O? This was fucked up.”
“Did you guys at least talk?”
“No! I mean, for five minutes, but no.”
“Aaaaaaaand?”
Bellamy groaned. Clarke wouldn’t talk to him; his friends were annoying…. Everyone and everything was pissing him off. He snapped, quietly. “Me kissing her was a mistake. She thinks of me as family and she’s not going to ruin the group dynamic because I have a little crush on her, okay?!”
Octavia squealed so loudly that he had to pull the phone away from his ear for a moment. “When the fuck did you kiss her, Bellamy Blake, and how could you not tell me?!”
“Last month. And because it’s none of your business. Can you just let it go?”
“I will never let this go. What did she say when you told her that it’s not a little crush?”
Bellamy hesitated. If Lincoln was going to say anything to Octavia about that night at the hospital, he would have done it already. Maybe he was more transparent than he thought. “I didn’t say anything.”
“Excuse me?!”
“She doesn’t want this, O. If she did….” He trailed off when Clarke walked back out of the store. “I have to go, okay? Just… fucking drop it. This isn’t going to happen.”
He didn’t give her a chance to respond before he hung up the phone. After he printed his receipt and stuck it in his wallet, he climbed back into the car. Clarke wordlessly dropped a Twix, Cheetos, and a coke in his lap. It made his heart twist painfully, because of course she knew what snacks he liked on long drives. He didn’t understand how she could be so mad at him and do these things. He risked a glance over at her, but she was already staring out the window again.
There was nothing else he could say to her, anyway. He had to wait for her to be ready to talk and until then, he had to try to be her friend. If she would let him. He just hoped she would be ready sooner rather than later.
Clarke was livid. It was possible that she had never been so angry in her life. The only person she wasn’t mad at was Bellamy, because at least he was as dumbfounded as she had been. But their friends? They could fuck right off.
The anger trickled away slowly as they got closer to her house. Or, at least, she turned it inward at herself. She was still annoyed, but there was no point in dwelling on it. All she really wanted by the time she muttered ‘thanks’ in her driveway was to be alone with her self-loathing.
All of the lights were off and she breathed a sigh of relief. There was no one to judge her and she could just crawl into bed with ice cream and binge something harmless on Netflix.
As she kicked off her shoes by the door, a lamp clicked on in the living room. Clarke almost fell over in the middle of getting her second shoe off. She frantically searched for a weapon, grabbing her shoe before she realized Octavia had been sitting in the fucking dark.
“Oh my god, O, don’t do that,” she squeaked, dropping her shoe and clutching her chest.
“You and I need to talk.” Octavia’s voice was steady in kind of a creepy, murderous way.
“Where’s Raven? Lincoln?”
“They took Roan to the bar to celebrate his first hike with us. You and I need to talk.”
“Don’t you have to practice for the senior recital?” Clarke was really tired of how panicked her voice sounded, but Octavia was freaking her out.
“Damn it, Clarke, just sit the fuck down.” Clarke’s eyes went wide and she dropped into the chair on the opposite side of the living room. “I can see the way you and Bell look at each other when you think the other one isn’t looking, okay? Even when you know the other one is looking. Fuck, it’s so adorable and depressing at the same time, it’s disgusting. Point is, I talked to Bell. He told me what you said and I think you’re stupid.”
“Excuse me?”
“Do you think you’re doing me some kind of favor ignoring your feelings?”
“What? No! I’m doing all of us a favor.”
Octavia scoffed. “How is this a favor to all of us? The longer you pretend something isn’t there, the worse it gets. Or are you not paying attention? Bellamy is nearly unbearable to live with. Harper says Miller’s almost never home. Monty and Jasper used to go over there to play video games, but now it’s the other way around, and you know how much he hates their apartment. Bellamy’s driving Raven up the wall. So are you, by the way. Monty and Jasper are scared to come around the two of you, because they’re apparently your children and they’re worried that you’re fighting.”
“Do you not see my point?”
“I am not finished. Wells is torn between wanting to slap some sense into both of you and trying to support the obvious emotional issues you both have. Lincoln feels awkward, because he’s always been closer to you than Bell, but he apparently knows something about all this.” Octavia gestured between Clarke and the window. “He won’t tell me, because he’s worried I’ll tell you and he doesn’t want you to be mad that he didn’t tell you himself. And if this finally blows up, he’s worried that he’ll have to pick sides and that I’ll be mad if he picks yours.”
“O, this is exactly what I was talking about. Imagine if we dated and broke up. The entire group would fracture. Jasper would break and Monty would break trying to make him feel better. Wells and Bellamy are so close that I’m surprised we’re not having this conversation about them, but Wells would follow me out of a misguided sense of loyalty and I can’t handle them losing each other. I’d never see Harper or Miller again. Lincoln would follow your lead and don’t you dare try to fight me on that. And I’d lose you and Bellamy. I’d lose my family, O, and I couldn’t handle that. You and Bellamy… you’re the only people I’ve always been able to rely on. Even when shit gets bad…. If something happened right now, he’d be over here in a heartbeat. He’s always been there for me and I can’t lose that.” Clarke covered her face with her hands. It was almost a relief to finally say the words.
Octavia sighed. Her face softened as she crossed the room and sat in the armchair with Clarke, wrapping her arms around her. “Hey. When you two get your heads out of your asses and give it a shot, you need to know something. If things don’t work, you’re not going to lose me. Hell, you probably wouldn’t even lose him. Even if you broke his heart, you wouldn’t lose him. I’d be pissed at you for a while, because it would be totally awesome for us to legally be sisters, but I’m going to be angrier at you if you break his heart because you’re too scared to try. You’re our family, too, you know. You’re all we have left and that’s never going to change.”
Clarke hugged Octavia tightly, then wiped away her own unshed tears. “I need you to give me some time to figure this out, O. I can’t risk everything right now. It’s just…. The timing is off or something. I need to figure this out.”
Octavia frowned at her, but nodded. Clarke decided that meant she was free to go. She couldn’t hide forever, but she could at least hide for the rest of the night.

How to spend an incredible weekend in Albany, New York.
Before traveling to Albany, I really knew very little about the city. Sure, I knew it was the capital of New York State, but that was about it. However, I love exploring new towns and cities. Since I’ve been pleasantly surprised and fallen in love with other cities in NY (oh hi, Buffalo!), I thought it was about time I made it out to Albany. I recently embarked on a road trip from Toronto to Portland, Maine to attend the Women in Travel Summit. As it happens, Albany was right on the way. Of course, I had a total blast discovering the history, culture, and natural spaces of the city. Who knew there were so many fun things to do in Albany NY?
I’ve put together an Albany itinerary for you, designed so you can spend the perfect weekend there. While 2 days in Albany isn’t enough time, you’ll be able to check out many local attractions and get a good feel for it. There are tons of Albany attractions to check out, so I’ll write down my favorites (and give alternate suggestions where possible). I’m sure you’ll have such a fun weekend in Albany that you’ll want to return again in the future!
ALBANY TRAVEL GUIDE
WHERE TO STAY IN ALBANY: I loved staying at the centrally located Washington Park Inn. You can book your stay here [and read more reviews here]. Hotels are very affordable in the city. Feel free to compare prices between hotels as you plan your holiday. To have your own place in Albany, browse the available listings on Airbnb.
GETTING AROUND ALBANY: Albany is a very walkable city, especially if you’re staying right in town. You can also rent bicycles by the hour or day through the CDPHP Cycle App, which you’ll find all over the city. I also recommend having a car when you visit Albany, especially if you want to visit the nearby State Park. Be sure to rent a car if you don’t arrive by car.
MORE THINGS TO DO IN NY: For all of the best things to do in New York State, check out all of my other blog posts.
PHOTOS OF ALBANY: Check out our entire photo album of pictures from Albany to inspire your trip. You can also purchase prints, housewares, and all sorts of gifts made from any of our photos – just click the “buy” button on any picture.
Day 1 in Albany: For the History Buffs
Albany is one of the oldest cities in America, established in 1614. In fact, it’s not only the capital of New York, but it’s also the oldest city in the state. The English took control of the city in 1664 and named it after the Duke of Albany. With such a rich history, there are many Albany attractions that provide enlightening learning experiences. Let’s start our day by learning more about Albany’s history. A few of these places make for great rainy day activities in Albany, too!
Breakfast at Stacks Espresso Bar
Before your busy weekend in Albany begins, you’ll want to fuel up with some coffee and a bite to eat. Stacks Espresso Bar describes themselves as a cafe and community space where they feature coffee from various roasters. In addition to coffee and espresso beverages, you’ll find a small menu that’s ideal for breakfast or a snack. In terms of vegan offerings, they have bagels with Earth Balance spread, as well as a few vegan treats.
The Discover Albany Visitors Center
First things first, head straight to the Discover Albany Visitors Center to learn more about Albany. There are permanent exhibits about Albany’s history with lots of fabulous details and insights. There’s also a gift shop, an artist exhibit space, and an information desk where you can ask questions about the city and your trip.
If you happen to be traveling to Albany on the third Saturday of the month, you can check out the Saturday Star Show at the Henry Hudson Planetarium right on site.
The Empire State Plaza
As Albany is the capital of the state of New York, you’ll find an impressive collection of buildings and monuments at The Empire State Plaza. Most notably, be sure to check out the magnificent New York State Capitol building. Home to the New York State Legislature, the structure was built in 1899 for $25 million dollars (equivalent to $753 million by our current standards), which made it the most expensive government building of its time. It’s also listed on the National Register of Historic Places; in addition, it’s a National Historic Landmark.
I recommend walking a complete circle around the New York State Capitol to view it from every angle. You can also take a guided tour of the New York State Capitol building. On weekdays, you can walk in and join a tour without any reservations. On Saturdays, there are a limited amount of tours and you will need to make reservations in advance (you can make reservations online). It’s also possible to take a self-guided tour with an audio guide on weekdays. All tours are free.
There are several other amazing buildings at the Empire State Plaza. One of the most unique buildings that I’ve ever seen is The Egg. It’s a center for the performing arts, and you can even look into catching a show while you’re in town. The Egg looks more like an artistic sculpture than a building, and it appears as though a giant egg shaped structure is balancing on a small stem. However, the building actually transcends six stories down into the earth.
For one of the best views of the city, visit the Corning Tower Observation Deck. You’ll be able to see the Plaza, city views of Albany, the Hudson River, and the foothills of the Adirondacks and the Catskills off in the distance. Unfortunately, the observation deck is closed on weekends, so you’ll have to plan your trip on a weekday to check it out.
Facing opposite the New York State Capitol, the New York State Museum features all sorts of exhibitions that showcase brilliant and unique aspects of New York State. While I didn’t have time to visit, it’s one of the best Albany attractions and a worthy addition to your travel itinerary. Feel free to make time for it during your 2 days in Albany, especially if it ends up raining and you need to cancel one of the outdoor activities.
Albany Institute of History & Art
As it was raining for a short while during my visit, I decided to take a trip to the Albany Institute of History and Art. Guys, this museum is awesome! I expected that it would be a pleasant trip with some interesting exhibits, but it seriously exceeded my expectations. There were intriguing and inspiring displays that I haven’t seen anywhere else. It’s definitely worth adding to your 2 days in Albany itinerary. I don’t normally visit a lot of museums on my travels, but this is certainly one of the most fun things to do in Albany NY. Here are a few of the exhibits on display when I was there. These are always changing and rotating, so it could be an entirely different experience when you visit. I’ll put the closing dates of each exhibition in the section to avoid disappointment.
Bejeweled and Bedazzled: Jewelry and Personal Adornment
Until June 9, 2019
On display from the collections of the Albany Institute and private collections, you’ll see more than 100 works of jewelry spanning four centuries. It’s truly fascinating to see jewelry throughout the ages, whether it’s purely decorative or has some distinct purpose. Some luxurious pieces highlight a person’s affluence, while others serve in memory of a loved one. There are even works made out of human hair (it sounds gross, I know, but it’s actually quite fascinating).
Shape and Shadow: The Sculpture of Larry Kagan
Until June 9, 2019
I wasn’t expecting this unique exhibition, but I was really wowed by the sculptures and design of artist Larry Kagan. Using acrylic, scraps of discarded steel, or other found items, he manages to play with light and shadows to create mesmerizing art. His acrylic sculptures from the 1970s reflect and refract light using interesting means. In the 80s and 90s, he uses found pieces of steel and uses their patterns and textures to create new works of art. And then most recently (and what I found to be more fascinating) are his shadow pieces that use bent steel rods to sculpt light. It results in innovative shadow art on the walls, taking shape as various items and images of people.
Heavy Metal: Cast Iron Stoves of the Capital Region
Until August 18, 2019
I never would have thought of cast iron stoves as art until I saw them in person. However, these furnaces were not only functional, but they were beautifully designed. Many of them are influenced by Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Rococo motifs and intricate floral designs. Even though these were a staple in American homes in the 19th century, they were also designed to make the home more stylish. These stoves were produced in Albany and the nearby city of Troy, New York. They were among the largest producers of cast iron stoves in the entire world.
Ancient Egypt
Ongoing
I love anything relating to ancient Egyptian artifacts. To my delight, there are a couple of rooms at the museum that are all about Egypt. This exhibit makes the museum a worthy addition to any Albany itinerary, and all of the other rotating exhibitions are icing on the cake. There’s a 3000 year old mummy, a priest named Ankhefenmut. You can view this mummy, his coffin base, his coffin lid, and his robe. There’s also a partially unwrapped mummy that’s captivating (and a tiny bit horrifying), and there are even animal mummies (the cat mummies are quite cute!).
Rain or no rain, I urge you to add the Albany Institute of History and Art to your weekend in Albany plans. It’s one of the most fun things to do in Albany NY, whether you’re traveling on a solo trip, with your partner, or with your family and friends.
Lunch at Raw Juice Bar
I’m sure you’re pretty hungry by now, so it’s time for lunch. Head over to the Raw Juice Bar (454 Madison Ave) for a healthy and tasty meal. While their juices and smoothies look delicious, I opted for an acai bowl as my meal. There are delicious toppings, like banana, cacao nibs, coconut chips, walnuts, and peanut butter. Mine was bursting with flavor and was more filling than it looked. You can customize your bowl as you like it, too. Raw Juice Bar also sells kombucha and bars, in case you need to stock up on any snacks.
Bike Ride at Historic Washington Park
After you’ve refueled, it’s time for a bike ride around the city. I suggest taking your set of wheels around historic Washington Park. It’s easy to rent a bicycle in Albany. There are CDPHP Cycle stations with bikes all over the city. Download the CDPHP Cycle app to your phone. You’ll be able to load it up with money and see where there are bikes available in advance. It’s quite ingenious: the app will show exactly how many bicycles are left at each station. That way, you won’t visit a particular bike rack to find that they’re all in use. You can rent by the hour, the month, or even the season. With the wind in your hair going sightseeing by bicycle, it’s one of the most fun things to do in Albany NY.
Washington Park is a beautiful place to visit, and you should definitely make at least one visit over your 2 days in Albany. Calvert Vaux and Frederick Olmstead designed this 81-acre park in the 1870s-80s. Of course, they are famous for New York City’s Central Park. You’ll see statues, fountains, basketball courts, a skateboard park, picnic areas, playgrounds, and historic homes. During the summer months, there are free plays at the Park Playhouse at the Washington Park Lakehouse almost every night. When I visited in the spring, the tulips were just about to bloom. It’s such a peaceful and gorgeous area of the city.
Half Moon Market
When I traveled to Albany, it was a happy coincidence that I was there during the Half Moon Market. It’s a bi-annual handmade marketplace at the Washington Park Lakehouse. There are 40+ vendors selling handmade goods, bath and body products, clothing, pottery, yummy treats, and so much more. I happily browsed the beautiful wares, created by talented artisans and small business owners. Be sure to pop by if it’s happening while you’re in town.
Dinner at Berben & Wolff’s
If you follow a vegan or vegetarian diet (or you’re looking for delicious plant-based eats), head directly to Berben & Wolff’s. You might even want to visit more than once. It’s that good! It’s a vegan deli with a focus on quality food, originality, and ethical consumption. You’ll find so many of your favorite meaty eats, re-imagined entirely plant-based. On the menu, there are tasty dishes like a Popcorn Mushroom Po’ Boy, a Seitan Philly, and BBQ Pulled Jackfruit.
I ordered the Buffalo Wing Burger: buffalo breaded fried chicken style seitan, shredded carrot, celery, and ranch on a sesame seed bun. It came with a side of chips and a pickle. Oh em gee. It was so, so delicious. One of the best burgers of my life? Yep!
They also have delicious sweet treats to try after your meal, as well as salads for takeaway. You can even buy some of their vegan deli meat so you can prepare some of your favorite dishes at home. I was also delighted to realize that the seitan wings that I’d later order at The Hollow Bar & Kitchen are prepared by Berben & Wolff’s, so it’s wonderful to see their plant-based foods being used around town, too.
Capital Repertory Theater
After dinner, it’s time to check out a performance at the Capital Repertory Theater (known locally as theREP). It’s the only professional theater in the Capital Region. While I was in town, I watched a live theater performance of Shakespeare in Love, adapted for the stage from the screenplay. It was a riveting rendition of this romantic comedy that I’d known from the movies. Stay tuned for more upcoming performances in 2019, such as The Fully Monty and It’s a Wonderful Life. Seeing a live professional performance is one of the most unique and fun things to do in Albany NY.
Where to Stay in Albany NY
Now, it’s time to rest your head after an exciting and fulfilling day of exploring Albany. I stayed at the charming Washington Park Inn, a Victorian mansion built in 1884. The inn is a stunning home where I am certain you’ll have a cozy, comfortable, and delightful overnight stay. After spending two nights at the Washington Park Inn, I wasn’t ready to leave!
I adored my spacious room, which included many of the original structural details like the fireplace. The bed was very comfortable and the room was very quiet for a restful night’s sleep. The room and bathroom are quite roomy, and you can enjoy many modern amenities like complimentary Wi-Fi and hundreds of channels on TV.
Feel free to help yourself to the complimentary coffee and tea in the shared kitchen space. There are also lots of other beverages and breakfast food items to enjoy. I really enjoyed the common areas throughout the home, like the dining tables and couches. There’s even a small office upstairs should you need to use a computer. The owners at the Washington Park Inn have truly thought of everything to ensure that you have a memorable stay.
The location of the Washington Park Inn cannot be beat. You’re right across the road from Washington Park and a short walk from Lark Street and many Albany attractions. When I wasn’t leaving town completely, I left my car at home and walked everywhere from the accommodation. There’s lots of free parking spaces for your vehicle in the parking lot and driveway beside the home.
When you travel to Albany, be sure to book your stay at Washington Park Inn. You can also read more reviews from fellow travelers here. Book early when you can. This place books up fast because it’s just so lovely!
Day 2 in Albany: For the Nature Lovers
On your second day in Albany, I recommend taking an excursion outside of the city for the late morning or early afternoon. There’s a nearby state park with hiking trails, beautiful scenery, and waterfalls. You’ll spend the rest of your time in Albany wandering around the historic streets and staying active with a class. And of course, you’ll be eating and drinking the culinary delights of the city!
Brunch at Iron Gate Cafe
Head straight to Iron Gate Cafe for a delicious start to the day (ooh, that rhymed!).  They have a whole vegan section on their menu, perfect for a filling breakfast or lunch. There’s the Ultimate Vegan Breakfast Sandwich, a Tofu Scramble, a Buffalo Seitan Wrap, a Black Bean Burger, the TLT (Tempeh Lettuce Tomato), or what I ordered, the Vegan French Toast.
I was never a fan of French toast when I used to eat dairy and eggs, but I thought I’d give their vegan French toast a try. Oh my goodness, this dish turned me into a French toast lover! Made with almond milk, cinnamon, and nutmeg, this was absolutely delish, especially when topped with strawberries and crunchy granola. The maple syrup on top pleased this Canadian girl, too!
John Boyd Thacher State Park
Just 30 minutes outside of Albany, the John Boyd Thacher State Park will provide your daily dose of the great outdoors. High atop the Helderberg Escarpment, you can hike over 25 miles of trails and enjoy panoramic views of the county. Hiking at Thacher State Park is one of the most fun things to do in Albany NY.
Stop by the Visitors Center to take a peek at their geological and historical exhibits about the Helderberg Escarpment. Then, grab a map and hit the trails. It’s always a good idea to chat with a staff member at the center to learn about what trails might be closed or less ideal for hiking, depending on the time of year. As I traveled to Albany in early spring, one of the trails was closed and one was very muddy. I’m glad that I gained that insight before heading out on my hike.
I ventured down the Paint Mine trail, which connected to several other loop trails on the way. I enjoyed scenery of the river and two waterfalls on the way. Funny story: it actually started to snow while I was hiking! I was there at the end of April and I thought that the icy weather was gone (I mean, the tulips and flowers were starting to bloom!). As Thacher State Park is high up on the escarpment, it might be a little windier and cooler than down below. Needless to say, I forged ahead with my hike as the snow only lasted for a few moments. It was rather funny to have bits of ice and snow landing in my hair and staying on the ground for a few minutes.
Before you leave the park, drive over to the scenic overlook to catch glimpses of tree tops and mountain ranges off in the distance, like the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains. It’s super pretty up there, and definitely a key place to include on your 2 days in Albany itinerary.
Coffee Break at 3Fish Coffee
In need of some caffeine? Make a pit stop at 3Fish Coffee for some of the best coffee in town. The coffee shop is located inside a renovated former garage of next door neighbors, the Downtube, a local bicycle shop (that’s also owned and operated by the cafe owners’ parents!). They brew coffee from Irving Coffee Roasters in Millerton, who have been roasting for 20+ years and source directly from local farmers. If you’re hungry, there are some treats and desserts available, too. I spotted one square of chocolate cake there that’s vegan. Make yourself at home at this cozy little cafe or take your beverage away with you.
Lark Street and Center Square
One of my favorite and most fun things to do in Albany NY is simply walk around and explore the city. I recommend taking the time to wander around Lark Street, as well as Center Square / Hudson-Park Historic District. Walk around the city blocks between the Empire State Plaza and Washington Park. You’ll feel like you’re walking around a quiet area of New York City or Boston with some of the most brilliant architecture in the city. But, you’re not in NYC or Boston; you’re in beautiful Albany. In comparison to the bigger cities, Albany is so underrated for its charming homes and neighborhoods. I’m so pleased to shine some light on this wonderful city.
Many of the homes were built between 1850 and 1900. They’re eclectic and colorful, ranging from elegant cottages to brownstone mansions. I adored walking around and admiring the homes and architecture, as well as watching the people of this neighborhood go about their days. Even though I’m completely an outsider, I got the impression that this was a vibrant community of homeowners and renters alike, making up a vibrant community of residents and business owners.
At the center of it all, the Lark Street Village is home to so many small businesses, cafes, restaurants, bars, and shops. It’s easy to spend a good part of your day walking up and down the streets, popping into nearby coffee shops and stores when the mood strikes you. It’s an incredibly photogenic area, so don’t forget to pack your camera. Lark Street and Center Square is definitely a space you don’t want to miss when spending 2 days in Albany (or longer!).
Lark Street Yoga
After a long day of wandering and exploring, it’s time to unwind at Lark Street Yoga. It’s a yoga and wellness center providing a peaceful space for students of all levels to practice yoga. I popped in for their Happy Hour Core Flow yoga class, which was unlike any yoga class I’ve ever tried. It combined elements of pilates and yoga for a workout based on core strength exercises, along with vinyasa style sequences. It was a great way to stretch and get rid of any stress that I had. Furthermore, it was set to upbeat music, which really inspired my movements.
There was a strong sense of community in this yoga class, as I got the impression that many people attended on a regular basis. Even though I was only visiting, I was warmly welcomed into the class like everyone else. I’d love to return to try some more yoga classes there in the future as it’s one of the most awesome and fun things to do in Albany NY.
Dinner at The Hollow Bar & Kitchen
Last but not least, head out for dinner at The Hollow Bar & Kitchen in downtown Albany. The Hollow Bar and Kitchen has amazing food, an energetic atmosphere, and live music. The restaurant serves an absolute ton of vegan and vegetarian items, including meals featuring farm fresh ingredients.
While it was really difficult to choose, I went with the Seitan Hot Wings to start (the seitan is sourced from Berben & Wolff’s vegan deli), which were pretty hot and spicy in the best way possible. It came with a side of veggies and vegan ranch dressing. For my main course, I tried the Tempeh Reuben sandwich, which consisted of vegan Russian dressing, ale-braised tempeh, sauerkraut, and vegan cheese on marbled rye. All of the flavors paired perfectly with one another for a super yummy and memorable meal.
And there you have it! I hope that you’ll take my advice and head directly to Albany, New York, for some exciting days ahead. It’s the perfect destination to spend a few days or a weekend. You can use Albany as a base for exploring other regions in the Hudson Valley, too. I’ll be writing about my adventures in nearby Dutchess County very soon, so stay tuned. Please feel free to ask any questions that you might have in the comments below. Otherwise, please enjoy all of these fun things to do in Albany NY. I thoroughly loved my time in Albany, and I can’t wait to return again in the future (maybe next time with Justin in tow!).

161122 Goblin Cast Drama Talk — An English Transcript
Hello! Since I saw many people wanted to know what the cast of Goblin said during their nearly hour-long drama talk after their press conference, I went ahead and translated a Chinese-subbed video into English. If you take anything out, I’d really like for you to link back to this page.
Notes and observations are [in brackets], and I’ve bolded each speaker and important questions being asked. If there are any errors, feel free to comment or message me, and I’ll try to correct them! There are bound to be things lost in translation, since I’m not familiar with Korean and am instead translating from another source’s Chinese subs. (Also for the few times I use romanized Korean terms, it’s only if I feel like it would emphasize how close the cast are, ex: oppa, hyung, etc.)
I’d encourage you to follow along with the video to catch all of the cast interactions! The video can be found here. (Please message me if it’s broken - I’ve updated after Youtube blocked the first link.)
MC: tvN’s 10th Anniversary special production Goblin drama talk starts now! I’m Shin Na Yeong, the MC. Very happy to meet all of you.
[obnoxious clapping, Wookie starts a chant of the MC’s name, they’re like a bunch of little kids lmao]
MC: Wow, it’s lively in here. This must be the atmosphere of Goblin. Right now, this drama talk is streaming live through Naver’s V-App. During the livestream, we’ll directly reply to any questions you have for the cast. We also hope lots of viewers will click the “heart” button.
After watching the press conference and how excited the cast members were in welcoming me just now, you can tell the atmosphere is great here. I’m sure this lively atmosphere will be on display during our drama talk as well.
[MC gives short intro/summary of drama]
Although this drama has a great plot, the circumstances that bring these cast members together cause great anticipation. Right now, these cast members are sitting right next to me. Say hello to the main cast of tvN’s 10th anniversary special project Goblin!
[everyone is clapping and saying hello]
MC: Right now there are a lot of people who are watching this livestream through Naver’s V-App. Please give a simple introduction of yourself (and the character you’re playing) to the audience.
YSJ: Hi everyone [laughs]… Hi everyone, I’m Yook Sung Jae and I’ll be playing Yoo Deok-hwa. As a character, Yoo Deok-hwa is the third generation chaebol descendant of a family that has served the goblin for generations. I don’t know where I heard this from, but he’s a little proud [?] but also a very cute character. I hope everyone will like this character a lot.
KGE: Hi everyone, I’m Kim Go Eun and I’ll be playing Ji Eun-tak. Eun-tak is a very positive and cheerful girl who can see ghosts.
GY: I’m the goblin in Goblin [laughs]. Like water, wind, and earth, he’s everywhere at once. A lonely and shining god. Yes, a lonely and shining god named Kim Shin.
LDW: Hi everyone, I’m Lee Dong Wook and I’ll be playing the grim reaper in Goblin, who lives together with the goblin and Yoo Deok-hwa in the same house. There will also be interesting happenings with Sunny. And also my character has complicated relationships with Eun-tak and Gong Yoo, so please anticipate that.
YIN: Hi everyone, I’m Yoo In Na and I’ll be playing Sunny. My character is a woman who is a little immature, and she’s the owner of a chicken shop that doesn’t have a lot of customers. She’s known Eun-tak, who works at her chicken shop, for a long time. She also falls in love at first sight with Lee Dongwook’s character.
MC: Right now on V-app the hearts/questions/comments are coming in nonstop! Before we start the drama talk, to ease our nervousness a little, we’ll start by answering a question: What are your wishes/aspirations for Goblin? Let’s start from YIN this time.
YIN: Are these real-life wishes, or…? Ah… I wish Goblin could be 100 episodes.
[prolonged whining and groaning]
MC: Right now we’re hearing the actors groaning. Oh, GY has resurrected from the dead. LDW, do you have any hopes for this drama?
LDW: Obviously I hope Goblin will do really well, and I hope everything goes smoothly for all of us (the cast members). We’ve all grown really close while filming this drama, and I hope we’ll be able to stay close for a long time.
MC: And how about GY, who says Goblin absolutely can’t be 100 episodes? Do you have any wishes for this drama?
GY: I’d like it to be more like 10 episodes… [laughing] Ah, sorry. Well, wherever it is, it would be nice if I could be sent there quietly.
MC: Where are you going?
GY: Well, wherever I want to go. No matter where. Just give me that kind of power/ability. Hold my hand and lead me there. That would be good. After you watch the drama you’ll understand why I’m saying this.
MC: Ah, so now we’ve given the audience a little bit of suspense.
GY: We can’t tell you all of it.
MC: Right.
[LDW says something that isn’t subbed, YIN replies/hits him on the arm, more talking in the background]
GY: KGE, you know what I mean, right?
[everyone turns and looks at LDW/YIN, KGE tries to hand them the mic, YIN refuses]
MC: What a lively group we’ve got here! How about you, KGE?
KGE: It would be nice if the goblin would listen to what I have to say.
MC: It sounds like you’re saying this to GY.
KGE: Oh, I’m not. If I could have a little space to move around a bit, that would be good.
MC: Well, I don’t know the details to this either, but I feel like this has to do with something important in the drama.
GY: This has to do with a scene we filmed.
MC: Got it, I guess that’s all we’ll get for now. Last, Sungjae?
YSJ: A more real-life wish would be for gold to appear directly in front of me. Nah, I’m joking. I want a loveline.
MC: Ahh, a loveline.
YSJ: Just now when we were taking press pictures I was the only one without a partner.
MC: Ah, well I hope your wish will be fulfilled.
We just watched the highlight video, and the story/plot of this drama is really very powerful. I’m sure the cast members will have some special thoughts and feelings after watching it. Let’s hear some of these thoughts/feelings. You’ve gone over some of them in the introductions already, so why don’t you say/summarize how you feel in 5 syllables?
‘After the highlight video, I felt this way’  expressed in 5 syllables.
I’ll give you guys a little time to think.
Right now GY is picking up his microphone like he’s ready to talk… …but now he’s immediately putting it back down. Okay, let’s hear it.
GY: ‘Very exhausting.’ You just saw the 6 minute teaser—for the past week, in order to explain my character, I’m filming the part where I’m in human form. So I’m appearing as a ‘war god’ (?). This is my first time filming a sageuk/action sequence, and the costumes/props are really large and heavy. Wearing all of that while carrying the sword and moving around was seriously very tiring. So thinking of the action sequence, that’s why I’m saying this.
LDW: Then I should follow that by saying “(You) really worked hard.” If I were to say a sentence, then I’d want to address all of the cast members and the film crew/staff: ‘Let’s do well/better.’
MC: So far we have ’Very exhausting’ and ‘Let’s do better’…
GY: I keep saying it’s exhausting, I’m capturing the traits of my character. But Dongwook is the kind of heartwarming person who knows how to console people, he really knows how to put on [run?] a show.
MC: So in the drama we’ll continue to see this kind of ‘bromance’. Okay, what about you, YIN?
YIN: ‘Year 2016’.
MC: ‘Year 2016’?
YIN: Yes, because our drama Goblin wraps up/closes out this year. [turns to LDW] Ah, that’s not very good, I’ll just say whatever
GY: They told you to say 5 syllables.
YIN: [spelling out] ‘Year 2016’!
GY: Ugh, this is tiring.
[LDW and KGE tease him by exaggeratedly demonstrating how to count the syllables]
GY: Okay okay I got it!
[MC asks actors to talk into the microphones]
MC: KGE, if you were to say 5 syllables to express how you feel about this drama, what would say?
KGE: ‘Handsome and beautiful’.
YIN: Ah good job [everyone claps]
MC: And Sungjae?
YSJ: I don’t have anything special, so I’ll just say ‘Wooow’.
GY: Wooooooooow
LDW: That’s cute.
YSJ: I really only have amazement [literal translation: exclamations]. It’s really cool/entertaining. Although I think as long as I can appear more it’s good. But it’s really so cool.
MC: Now that we’ve each used 5 syllables to describe our characters and their personalities, let’s officially start discussing the drama.
YSJ: The replies say ‘it’s so boring’.
LDW: Ah, we’re boring?
YIN: All of us?
GY: Good thing it’s saying everyone’s boring. I thought they were only calling me boring. But that’s okay!
MC: Okay, let’s officially start talking about the drama! Through what opportunity/circumstances did each of you take on Goblin? You can speak your heart, whether it’s background stories or exposing the secrets of your fellow cast members. Since GY is holding a microphone, why don’t we start from him.
GY: I’m only holding it because you told us to hold our microphones!
MC: Then why don’t you start us off? [lmao]
GY: It’s been a long time—around 4 years—since I’ve been in a drama. No matter what, because this role/character isn’t a human character, I feel a little anxious, a little burdened. Even so, when talking with the scriptwriter, I could tell that she was really enthusiastic about this project. I could really tell how much she trusted the actors. I was really touched. Plus the director became popular through other projects/dramas, so I really trust the two of them.  Now that I’m approaching my 40s—please receive this sincerely(?)—
LDW: This is such a sad subject…
GY: Ah, seriously. So I was thinking of how—
LDW: It’s okay, we all have to go (through it), there’s no before and after [probably lost in translation idk]
GY:  So I was thinking, right now, when I at least still have energy [literally ‘vitality’], I could film and show everyone this kind of magical/fantasy drama. So after agonizing over this I decided to take this drama.
MC: When GY was talking, LDW said something like “We all have to go, there’s no before and after,” what kind of work do you think Goblin is?
LDW: Of course, I feel the same way as GY. I really trust the scriptwriter and director. And like I said (during the press conference), I was told that GY would be playing the role of the goblin, so I thought it would be pretty good to play the role of the reaper. In contrast, I actually first expressed that I wanted to play the role, because I really thought this role would fit me well. Plus, in the future, YIN and I will be able to show an interesting love story/plot, so please anticipate that.
But just now, after hearing that we were boring, it’s been making me feel burdened. Why don’t we go around and show some personal talents or something.
GY: No no no let’s not do that. Actually I’ve even done a V-App stream before and they never said we absolutely had to be entertaining—
LDW: Of course, of course.
GY: It’s more important for us to sincerely discuss the drama.
YSJ: Ah now they’re all saying ‘it’s interesting! it’s interesting’
LDW: There’s also… how do I say it, what is it… wasn’t our press conference just now also streamed live? So I wanted to say things/answer questions we haven’t already said just now.
GY: No but it would be better to carry on answering according to the questions, right?
LDW: Ah yeah, I understand. So YIN, what thoughts do you have about this new project—
GY: [talking over LDW to KGE]
LDW: Let’s do this freely then.
GY: Let’s all just say what we want to then.
LDW: So YIN, how did you decide to take on this drama?
GY: Do we do this for 30 minutes then? 30 minutes? Give every person a camera, whatever everyone wants to say, you can say it.
LDW: Okay, let’s laugh it out then. Which room do we go to. [gesturing at camera]
YIN: Well, for me, of course I really wanted to act in this scriptwriter/director’s work. I was the last one to join the cast, so I already knew which actors would be playing each role, and I thought this drama would be really great and would be a lot of fun. So with these thoughts, and with a lot of trust, I didn’t have any reason not to take on this role.
MC: When YIN was talking there were many comments appearing that said “kekekeke this is fun this is interesting”
YIN: They’re teasing me, right?
MC: No, no, don’t feel too pressured. Okay, then let’s hear KGE’s feelings.
KGE: I think I feel pretty much the same way. Wow, this is a lot of pressure [laughs]. Of course I also really trust the scriptwriter and director. Actually, at first, when GY confirmed his role, I was curious about to see who the female lead would be. Then shortly after that I received the offer for the role. It felt very magical. Plus I already was a fan of GY… and after I accepted the role, LDW, YIN, and YSJ all confirmed their roles, so I felt like accepting the role was a good decision.
MC: The comments keep saying “this is fun/interesting”. So last we’ll have YSJ share—what’s the attraction point of the drama?
YSJ: Attraction point… For me, first I already saw the confirmed lineup for the drama, and I thought, ‘Wow, if I could act/work with them I would definitely be able to learn a lot of things.’ It’s with spirit/sincerity(?).
LDW: Why are you looking over at us when you say that…
GY: It’s said with more spirit/sincerity than what KGE said just now [idk how to translate this]
LDW: Just now hearing KGE saying she was originally a fan of GY, GY and I both had to sigh.
YSJ: Oh and also my older sister really likes GY and LDW, she’s been a fan since a long time ago.
YIN: Actually in Korea pretty much every woman/girl is probably a fan of the two of them.
KGE: Right, right.
YSJ: And so she told me I definitely had to take the role. So I did. That’s all.
LDW: Then GY, why don’t you say a few things to Sungjae’s sister?
GY: Me?
LDW: Yeah, why don’t you say something first.
GY: Is her name…?
YSJ: Seonhyo. It’s Seonhyo.
GY: Hello Seonhyo, I don’t know if you’re watching, but I’m happy to be able to meet you like this. I’d like to ask how old you are.
YSJ: She was born in ’92.
GY: Ah, so young. Very nice to meet you. Well, looking at YSJ, you’re probably very pretty. Next time come please visit us onsite/here. Thank you.
YIN: [to LDW] You should say a few sentences to my older sister, her name is Ah-na.
LDW: How old is Ah-na…?
YIN: My sister has a kid already.
LDW: Ah, is that so… I hope you can become a good mother. Next time, come visit us here. Please love Goblin a lot, thank you.
MC: Ah, so far we haven’t actually asked many questions and already the chemistry [between the cast] is this strong. Everyone’s personality/role seems to be very clear, too. Please compare each character’s personality with their real-life personality. But actually, it seems like we’re gradually seeing these personalities come through; GY plays the goblin, LDW plays the grim reaper. If we were to compare the personality of your character to your actual personality in real life, what would be similar/different?
Ah but why is everyone just exchanging glances/looking at each other? Let’s give the microphone to LDW then.
LDW: Okay. Uhh… [gets distracted by microphone cord] Sorry but this mic cord is tangled with this chair. Uh… as for the grim reaper… …do you want us to talk/compare for just our own characters? Ah, then I’ll talk about the character Sunny/YIN.
YIN: …Don’t….
LDW: Ah, you don’t want me to? I’ll only pick good things to say. We’re in front of cameras, after all.
YIN: It’s just… right now I don’t think I’ve found anything in common with the character Sunny, have you found anything?
LDW: No. [laughs] If you haven’t found any similarities yourself how could I…
YIN: Then what were you planning on saying…?
LDW: No, because Sunny is a pretty reckless… the character in the drama is quite reckless, and her self-awareness is very strong… This is a very strong, clear character. But in reality YIN is a much gentler person, who can really listen to other people’s thoughts, and can really look after/care for other people. She’s a really great person.
YIN: Thank you.
LDW: Yes, congratulations. [laughing] What even was that ending just now?
MC: Who wants to talk a little about someone else’s character next?
GY: One way KGE is similar to Eun-tak is that she’s very open/cheerful. This is what’s most similar. As for differences… compared to Eun-tak, KGE is smarter. [to KGE] That wasn’t bad, right? Okay, now talk about my character next.
KGE: First, the goblin’s… uh…
[GY purposely puts a hand on her chair, KGE gets nervous]
KGE: You kept praising me and now I don’t know what to say! Because originally he doesn’t really praise me that much. A similarity between GY and the goblin character is… first… well… that prankster/joking kind of look/style? When going through lines with Eun-tak he’ll be noisy, excited… he’s also like that in reality. As for differences…
MC: Does [GY] really never praise people? Right now KGE has this really imposing(?) feeling… as you were saying?
KGE: Yes, well, as for differences, GY is a lot younger.
MC: The goblin is over 900 years old, after all…
GY: Yeah, well…
MC: Yes, so a large age difference, and…?
KGE: When the goblin is talking, there are times when he’s pretty indifferent/cold, but GY is warmer.
KGE: Not bad, right?
GY: Yeah, that was pretty good!
MC: Next, YIN?
YIN: First, in reality LDW really has a lot of charm [high-fives LDW]. If we were to talk about similarities and differences with the grim reaper, the reaper is a funny kind of man, and in real life LDW really is that kind of funny, interesting man.
[prolonged embarrassed pause]
LDW: Uh, then, lastly, I’ll…
[KGE and YSJ imitate LDW/YIN’s high-five]
LDW:… I’ll talk about Sungjae, then. Of all of us, Sungjae is the most similar to his character in the drama. He’s cheerful/open, cute, and refreshing/cool, and when I was watching replays, one time he was filming outside—I said this before, right? ‘You’re really very handsome’, like that. While I was watching replays, without even knowing it this phrase just tumbled out of my mouth, because he really looks so bright and clean. I really felt like, ‘ah, being young is so great’, ah… it was like that.
[If you’re following along with the video, we’re at 24:16.]
MC: So we just heard everyone’s comparisons to their drama characters’ personalities. Because it’s a romantic fantasy drama, the subject matter and characters of Goblin seem to be quite unfamiliar for the cast as a whole. I’d like to hear what everyone did to prepare for this drama. Also, there’s a sageuk (historical drama) segment, there’s a goblin, a grim reaper [literally ‘messenger of hell’], these kinds of strange characters… To play these roles, did the cast members have to specially prepare (for) anything? Characters like the goblin or the grim reaper, these roles really must not be simple to play…
GY: Right. Like you said, they’re not human (characters), so in the beginning I really was at a loss, trying to figure out how to play this character. But after filming, there were actually many parts that could be simplified. Because the characters are not human, there’s a kind of ability to do anything. Therefore, when I’m acting, there’s a lot more freedom. So this (fantasy) aspect was originally quite stressful, but as time went on, it actually came in handy.
As for the sageuk part, there were action sequences, but we had less time to practice than imagined, so it was a little unfortunate. But I was helped a lot by the martial arts crew and staff, and the director filmed the scene in a really, really cool/handsome way, so I was very satisfied with it.
LDW: As for studying and understanding the grim reaper character, I have the same thoughts as GY. Also, there was a lot of preparation before we even started filming… Actually while filming we exchanged a lot of thoughts and ideas, especially when GY and I were filming together, it was a little… Later when the drama is broadcast you’ll know what I mean. Because it was like we were acting out the reality/situations we were envisioning in our minds. We were discussing with the staff and cast members, ‘how do we act this out’. I thought that kind of creative process was very interesting overall.
MC: Then, what about KGE, who’s playing a high school student? Did you do anything to prepare for this? For example, imitating the expressions of contemporary high school students?
KGE: For language/expressions… In reality I didn’t really mimic them that much because scriptwriter KES designed the script very appropriately, so there wasn’t really that kind of problem. On set, I also discussed a lot of things with the director. Also, the first time I filmed with GY, it was also through discussion and collaboration that I was able to get used to the character.
MC: What was YIN’s situation like?
YIN: For me… actually Sunny is a pretty strong character, and in the beginning I introduced my character like that. When the character Sunny talks to other people, she’s not willing to concede to anyone, that kind of defiant attitude. But in reality my personality isn’t like that. I’m the type to immediately soften... [giggles] …so to not be like that, I put up pictures of KGE and the others at home.
[Cast laughs, LDW says something, YIN makes a small circle with her hands.]
Yeah, just ones that you could hold like this, not just pictures that I saw at other places. Photos that were taken to see what the profile shots would look like(?). I used really thick paper to make them into signs [that you can hold], So there was a picture of KGE where she was smiling really brightly, and in order to get/act a little tougher I would face the picture like this and just practice like that [laughs]…
MC: Ah, so you practiced before. Right now, looking at the comment section, new comments are continuously streaming in. Everyone is saying you guys are all very entertaining, so you guys don’t need to worry. Lastly, YSJ’s situation, you’re living with the goblin and grim reaper, right?
YSJ: Ah, yes.
MC: Your character is probably also not that easy to portray, right?
YSJ: Um… In reality it’s a little difficult. At first, because I’m originally nervous around strangers, while filming for the first time I was really just like my character Yoo Deok-hwa, bouncing(?) back and forth. It was pretty tiring. But gradually we became more comfortable with each other, so that kind of feeling I had in the beginning went away. Also in the beginning I knew that the character Yoo Deok-Hwa is a third generation chaebol(?), and not just a normal chaebol, he’s /very/ chaebol, so I was wondering how to seem more boastful/proud(?). And more like a chaebol. Once I went on set and put on Yoo Deok-hwa’s capable-looking(?) clothing… was in a huge house… drove a luxury car… naturally, that chaebol-feeling came to me. Those kinds of hand motions, that kind of gaze, all of that. I really felt like, ‘Ah, this drama’s sponsors are so awesome’.
[cast laughing at him]
Seriously, I was like, wow, they’re not fooling around here. Especially the car. You can even open the top cover.
GY: Aren’t you a little too simple/honest?
YSJ: It’s awesome, it can even make noise. The house is also super big. The fridge has a screen, and it’s even a touch screen! So it’s really pretty good!
LDW: That’s great. You’re too good at PPL (product placement), you just advertised everything.
MC: Okay, now we’ve heard everyone’s answers, and we’re really anticipating this drama. We’ve prepared some highlight pictures from filming, so now we’ll take a look at the pictures and then ask everyone to explain more in detail about them.
Let’s first show everyone the first picture. Can you remember this scene, GY? On the top picture, GY is acting as a warrior/general and as the goblin, [audio goes mute]…
GY: The top picture is when my character is still in human form, when we were still filming the beginning of the drama. When I was still living as a general. My appearance was that of a gallant general who is the people trusted and depended on. The bottom picture is when I was reborn as the goblin. I think it was the first time I filmed. This was when I was talking a walk. This is the part of the drama where the goblin is (most) terribly upset, so at this moment my character is actually in deep [gloomy] thought. Yes, it should be this picture. In my estimate, I was probably thinking about Eun-tak, the character played by KGE, who is sitting next to me.
MC: The first picture looks very intense, and this was even when you were still in human form, wasn’t it?
GY: Yes. It was probably during the Goryeo dynasty/era?
MC: This must be your first time acting as a general in a sageuk, right?
GY: Yes, it’s my first time.
MC: What kind of preparation did you do?
GY: I prepared armor! [cast laughing at him]
MC: Ah, right, and what else? You even had a sword…
GY: Yes, and after that there was a wig. I even put on a wig. Didn’t it look very natural? They made it look pretty natural. [The cast is snickering at him in the background LMAO] So I prepared a wig, and also… well, everything I mentioned was prepared for me by the staff. Originally I thought filming a sageuk really wasn’t suitable for me, so… although it wasn’t like I was specifically avoiding sageuks, since my debut I’d never acted in one. This time, in Goblin, I didn’t even know I’d be showing everyone this kind of [sageuk] appearance, but I’m very satisfied that I’m even able to create this special and handsome/cool appearance. Beforehand, I did have my worries.
MC: In reality, the GY that we’re familiar with is more like the feeling the bottom picture portrays, but the intense/strong appearance seen in the first picture leaves a deep impression on us.
Alright, then let’s look at what’s happening in the second picture. It’s the goblin and Eun-tak, walking together on the street. KGE, what kind of setting/scene is this?
KGE: Uh, this… The two of us went to Canada together. Because it was Eun-tak’s first time leaving the country, [my character] was really excited. And then seeing all of the maple leaves falling to earth, it felt like walking the red carpet, in the lively Eun-tak’s perspective. [gestures to GY]
MC: [to Sungjae] Do you need a mic to talk?
YSJ: No, no.
MC: Then I’ll say it. YSJ just said, it’s more like you were walking with a red carpet wrapped around your neck.
LDW: Isn’t it more like a piano cover?
[everyone looks at him like ???]
LDW: Ah sorry I’m sorry
GY: In this scene of the drama I’m a little impatient. Because it’s her first time outside of Korea, Eun-tak is especially excited/hyper, so she’s just incessantly following me. If she’s not scampering back and forth like a puppy by my side, I’m trying to lead her forward while walking, this kind of situation.
MC: Actually, after looking at the comments, I’m seeing people saying the two of you have great proportions/positions(?). It’s just like it’s from the perspective/angle/position of a girl who really likes someone. The two of you suit each other so well! It seems like the chemistry between the two of you is pretty special. When you were filming in Quebec, was there anything else [that happened] that was interesting/fun?
GY: Quebec is a place that has so many tourists, and in the beginning we hadn’t thought of that. Compared to filming in Korea, when we were filming in Canada, there were more people who would come over to record/take pictures of us. There were people from China, Canadian locals, people from Japan, tourists… if they weren’t really doing anything, they’d all come over and take pictures of us. So even though that made it a little more difficult to film, we got to advertise for the drama pretty effectively.
Additionally, the local Quebec news station also broadcasted a very eye-catching piece of news. So at that moment I could really feel the impact/influence of Korean dramas.
MC: ’This kind of appearance/scene, of course they would release news about it’… Okay, the comments have continuously been increasing, from ‘Really very compatible’ to ‘With this kind of goblin, I also want to be caught/taken’, ‘Really wish to be taken/caught’, it’s really getting very chaotic.
Alright, let’s take a look at the next set of pictures. Finally, we get to see the pictures of our grim reaper wth Sunny!
[In the corner you can see LDW spots YIN struggling to look at the picture, so he moves in front of her to block her view, which she protests. What a flirt.]
MC: In the picture, the two of them are standing face-to-face, looking straight at each other. But it also feels like you guys were just arguing with each other, what’s happening here?
LDW: [to YIN] Why don’t you explain?
YIN: Ah, this scene… Sunny is saying to the grim reaper… Wait, am I allowed to say this?
LDW: Yeah, we can’t tell you everything
YIN: Right. This… it isn’t like that.
LDW: What isn’t?
YIN: [laughing] Ah I don’t even know anymore either [bursts out laughing]
LDW: ‘Ding!’ [”Wrong!”] Uh… this is after the two of us meet for the first time. This is the second time we meet. It looks like I scolded Sunny, in this scene we were filming. This was actually the first time YIN and I filmed together.
YIN: Ah, that’s right.
LDW: You didn’t remember?
YIN: Of course I remember!
LDW: So originally that day I thought it would be really awkward, but the filming process was actually much more comfortable than I had imagined it would be.
YIN: Yes.
LDW: YIN voluntarily came up to me and asked if we wanted to go through/match our scripts, so I’m really very thankful to her for taking the initiative. She took the initiative to set the atmosphere.
MC: The first time you met, was it under really intense circumstances?
LDW: Yes, it was like that. The first time we meet, it’s really intense. Uh… there’s a reason. There’s a reason for that.
MC: A reason… we’ll just have to watch the drama to find the answer to that, then.
LDW: Yes, of course.
MC: Okay, we’ll quickly move on to the next picture. Ah, this picture… it’s like it was secretly taken. Bromance! In the second photo, GY has his back to LDW like that… what’s the situation here?
GY: There’s no way to explain the details of this…
LDW: Right… This… I’m really sorry, we can’t tell you all the details because then it would be a spoiler.
YSJ: In this scene…
LDW: Good job.
YSJ: …this is a picture where the grim reaper is staring at the goblin’s back.
[everyone starts laughing/cheering]
LDW: [laughing] Ah, correct! Wow, YSJ is doing so well!
MC: Ah, yes, I really hope everyone could speak into the microphone. [turns Sungjae’s mic around for him] See, everyone’s answering correctly!
GY: Okay, this is when I slightly injured the grim reaper’s self-esteem [pride/ego?]. So the reaper is a little angry in this scene. But I’m immersed in my own emotions, and I didn’t even notice.
LDW: At this scene, where the goblin yells at me to “Go away!”, this kind of scene.
YIN: Here LDW looks kind of like a female lead, doesn’t he?
GY: It looks like his eyes are shining with tears.
LDW: [embarrassed laugh] Uh…
GY: Okay but LDW’s eyelashes are really pretty. It sounds strange when I say it like this but—
MC: No, no, please continue
LDW: It’s very strange. Very strange.
GY: For a man’s eyelashes, your eyelashes are really very pretty. Even from here, you can see that his eyelashes are so long!
LDW: Omo, cham… [hits GY on the shoulder]
GY: I really…
MC: Could you turn to the side so everyone can see? Show the camera, too…
LDW: How?
GY: It’s like Bizarro.
LDW: I don’t think you can see them.
GY: Ah his eyelashes are so long
LDW: Why would you say Bizarro, you complimented me so why would you mention Bizarro
MC: Right now in the comments there are people saying ‘It’s like GY and LDW are playfully arguing/flirting’
LDW: Yes, well, in the drama there will be a lot of scenes where we’re just bickering back and forth. That will be one of the interesting features of this drama.
MC: It’s a little like a relationship that’s somewhere between love and friendship.
LDW: Yes, it is. A love-hate relationship between the goblin and the reaper.
MC: A love-hate relationship, right. Okay, let’s look at the next picture.
[We’re at 38:40 in the video.]
MC: We finally get to see YSJ! These three are mysteriously together—there’s GY at the door, but also LDW and YSJ, what’s happening here?
YSJ: Well, even though we can’t explain in detail, this is when we got kicked out of the house.
MC: Kicked out?
YSJ: Yeah, we got kicked out.
LDW: YSJ and I were kicked out of the house.
MC: GY kicked you guys out of the house.
LDW: Yes.
YSJ: Also if you look closely, there’s a thin layer of ice on the ground around reaper-hyung (LDW). You could emphasize/focus on that, I guess.
MC: Ah, looking here at this photo, there is a thin layer of ice. So although we can’t explain further, this is a point of emphasis.
YSJ: And...
LDW: Ah, well, to put it simply, if the goblin is fire, then I’m ice. The reaper is ice. We can think through this kind of comparison.
YSJ: Also the outfit I’m wearing is one of the most eye-catching out of the collection... people kept saying it looks like the principal from Crayon Shin Chan...
LDW: No no it suits you!
YSJ: It suits me?
LDW: It suits you, it’s very cute.
YSJ: If I put on sunglasses I’d become the principal [from Crayon Shin Chan].
MC: Actually, the bromance between these three is something we can really anticipate from the drama, and a lot of people are saying that they’re excited for this just from seeing the talk.
Right now YSJ feels a little sad because he’s the only one without a loveline, Are there any episodes where you have bromance [with the older brothers] instead?
YSJ: [looks toward GY and LDW, laughs] Is there anything?
LDW: Well... how do I say it... the bromance...
YSJ: Up until now, I haven’t experienced anything particularly deep...
LDW: Well, we can be certain that amid the complicated relationship between the goblin and grim reaper, Deokhwa is a very important character. He acts as a wall that can keep the two from colliding.
YSJ: Right now I’m basically stuck between goblin and reaper hyungs, not knowing where I should go next...
LDW: Ah, like a love triangle?
YSJ: [laughs] Yes, because I also want a love line...
MC: So even in a situation this forced, you want to find something to make a loveline out of...
GY: But it’s not like he absolutely doesn’t have anything going on. I always feel like in the latter half of the drama, YSJ’s character will have some kind of importance, especially because the scriptwriter never really talked about it. I feel like there definitely will be some other person of interest that appears later.
LDW: I also feel that way.
MC: Do you also hope this will happen, YSJ?
YSJ: Well, I definitely hope so.
MC: Right now there are a lot of comments about YSJ. When he mentioned how his clothes look like the principal from Crayon Shin Chan, a lot of commenters were saying that fashion depends on the face. A lot of these comments have to do with YSJ, so I’ll ask YSJ again - you just said there weren’t a lot of significant bromance episodes, so let’s slightly change the question. Do the hyungs treat you well on set?
YSJ: Oh! [looks over at GY and LDW, starts laughing]
MC: Oh, he got a little nervous!
YSJ: No, no.
LDW: He hesitated a little...
YSJ: No, it’s because I’m still a little shy/unfamiliar, but the hyungs have been really easygoing/treated me comfortably... right? [laughs]
GY: Sungjae is so busy, he just released a new album and is in the middle of promotions. Honestly sometimes I feel so sorry for him. He gets to the filming site, and because he has a little less screen time than us, he has to wait a long time before filming, too. There were also times where he’d wait a full day and still not get to film, too. Idols originally have super busy schedules, and on top of that he has to promote a new album, so it honestly seems like a level of ‘busy’ that we can’t even imagine. But even when he comes to film, he doesn’t show that he’s exhausted, always greeting us with a clear/bright face, so I’m really thankful to him for that.
YSJ: Every time I go for filming I always feel really excited, like, ‘Oh, I get to see GY and LDW hyungs now!’ [starts laughing]
LDW: BTOB fighting!
GY: Everyone please love BTOB’s album a lot, there’s not a lot of promotions left so please support them till the end!
LDW: [untranslated] Fighting!
MC: Ah, it’s so nice to see that the hyungs really treasure Sungjae so much. Just now, in response to Sungjae’s wish for a love line, there were a lot of comments coming in saying ‘Absolutely not!’
YSJ: ‘Absolutely not...’ well... Acting is acting, please don’t misunderstand! If the scriptwriter is watching right now... could you give me a little bit of a loveline... Right now this is my fourth project, but I haven’t had a successful loveline/love experience.
MC: So this time... you want to experience (a loveline)?
[YSJ nods]
MC: I see. Wow, right now, since the actors have been talking nonstop, there are 46,960... almost 47,000 people who are watching our live broadcast.
GY: How many people have ‘liked’ the broadcast?
MC: As for likes (’hearts’), there are already 980,000. I just added one myself.
LDW: Ah, is it good that there are so many hearts?
MC: Of course.
YSJ: If we reach 100,000 hearts...
LDW: Will they give us something? [Look at GY cracking up and hitting him on the shoulder lmfao]
YSJ: ...you have to show them aegyo as a thank you.
LDW: We do?
YSJ: Yes, you.
GY: In the past when I was promoting for a movie, I did a V-app broadcast, and I asked the same thing you just did.
LDW: Ah, ‘is getting more hearts a good thing?’
GY: Yes, ‘if we get a lot of hearts will they give us money?’
LDW: Oh, exactly. Something like, every time we reach a certain stage it goes up by 100 dollars.
GY: See, the reason why we became close is because we’re so similar.
LDW: That’s true.
GY: We really don’t get anything from it.
LDW: Of course more [hearts] is better. Because they’re giving us love, right. It’s like just the two of us are talking now.
YSJ: From what I know, if there are a lot of viewers and hearts, the broadcast can get on the main page.
MC: Ah, as you were talking we just reached 10,000 hearts.
YSJ: 100,000!
MC: Ah 100,000, my mistake. We’re over 100,000 hearts now. It seems like it’s time for you guys to show some aegyo... [laughs] Right now everyone is asking questions, I’ll ask everyone to personally take a look at them and try to answer. So the number of hearts passed 100,000. Just now I took a quick glance at questions for GY. From Train to Busan, then The Age of Shadows, and now Goblin, you’ve been incredibly busy this year. So for you, GY, what kind of a year has it been? I just saw some questions like that.
GY: Yes. Since my debut, I think this is the first time I’ve had this much work within a single year. As an actor, it felt like my career was almost fit to burst [?], and the results were all really positive. It was a year full of blessings. So I hope this kind of good luck can extend to Goblin, and I hope Goblin will be able to receive everyone’s love.
MC: Alright, next let’s take a look at LDW’s questions. LDW, you too have been continuously active in your projects; what’s driving you to film projects so continuously?
LDW: Ah... well... in this capitalist world, I have to eat and live... Actually this is my only television drama of this entire year, so it’s not like I was continuously working. Because Gong Yoo’s had a phenomenal year, I also hope the success can transfer to Goblin and yield great results.
MC: Right now the number of hearts keeps increasing. We just hit 100,000 hearts, and now there’s 60,000 more of them. Okay, so in KGE’s case, a lot of people said this: 'You seem just like a real high school student! How did you maintain such a youthful appearance? You're clearly around the same age as I am, it’s so fascinating! What's the secret to your youth?’
KGE: The secret... um... there’s nothing special. If I get chubbier it all just goes to my face, so it’s probably just because of that?
GY: Ah, so because your face gets chubbier you look younger? More child-like?
KGE: Yes, that’s it.
GY: Well the way I see it, it’s because she’s very cheerful/open, and laughs a lot, so she appears younger, brighter.
MC: I see. Then for YIN, just now you showed great chemistry with LDW. I saw a lot of comments saying you’re so cute, or that you two are going to start rumors/scandals, these kinds of comments. But there were a lot of comments about your voice, too, asking stuff like ‘How do I make my voice as sweet [honey-voice] as yours?’ Is there a secret to that?
YIN: The secret to my voice... uh...
MC: Were you born with it?
YIN: Actually, even though my voice is originally like this, but I think it’s also because I was a radio DJ for a really long time. When I first heard my own voice I just couldn’t stand it, so among the sounds I could make, I practiced how to make my vocal tone soothing to the ears.
KGE: Not only is YIN’s [vocal] tone is so nice to listen to, but the way she talks is beautiful as well. She can really brighten the mood of anyone who’s listening to her.
LDW: That’s true. She’s really talented [skilled] in speaking—
[KGE and YIN bashfully pretend to swat each other from across the table, YIN hits LDW on the shoulder, everyone starts laughing]
LDW: [sighing] Ah, seriously. When she’s praising others, or when she’s talking with other people, she’ll never make the other person feel bad [cause them to be in a bad mood]. Her speaking skills are really strong.
KGE: Her praise is really genuine.
LDW: Exactly.
KGE: She doesn’t make people feel like it’s only out of courtesy/just for show.
LDW: Her reactions are very honest.
MC: Let’s all take a look at the real time comments. There are a lot of questions for YSJ. Just before we started on questions, we talked about aegyo, right? Because we’ve gotten over 100,000 hearts now, there are a lot of people that would really like to see you do aegyo [literally, ’the voices yelling for aegyo are louder and louder’].
YSJ: It seems like I’ve heard them, too. Uh. I’ve done this way too many times. [Looks over at the rest of the cast, who probably suggested he sing.]
The new song, huh? [clears throat] sings chorus of I’ll Be Your Man]
GY: Finish it up with aegyo.
YSJ: Okay. [Sings part of the chorus of “I’ll Be Your Man”] Please give a lot of love to BTOB’s “I’ll Be Your Man”! [finger heart]
[cast is clapping, LDW gives him a standing ovation]
MC: You can’t lose/go wrong with that! Is there anyone else here who’s prepared some aegyo?
YIN: The oppas here will act as representatives for our team.
MC: Who are they, YIN?
YIN: LDW, how long has it been since you debuted?
LDW: This year would be my 18th year since debut.
YIN: It’s already been 18 years, but a lot of people might not know that LDW is actually really good at aegyo. He’s really a very cute guy.
LDW: People not knowing about that is perfectly fine with me...
YIN: [laughs] Please let everyone know...
LDW: You want me to do aegyo?
YIN: Yes, I do.
LDW: Ah... [fake sighing]
MC: Once we say you have to do aegyo, now everything’s a mess, plus there’s YIN’s testimony now...
LDW: Ah, this is a big problem, what do I do now? What should I do for aegyo? GY [hyung] should do it with me.
[GY turns away from LDW immediately]
MC: Just do finger hearts.
LDW: Yeah why don’t we just do finger hearts together?
MC: Why don’t GY and LDW do finger hearts together.
LDW: [bursts out laughing] What are we even doing here?
GY: Right now it seems like we don’t have much time left in this live broadcast, I still have a schedule coming up.
LDW: Let’s just face the cameras and do finger hearts at it.
GY: Everything’s out of order now.
MC: Where? Where? They’re saying it’s fine, they’re telling you to hurry up and do [aegyo] it...
LDW: Alright, we got it.
[GY’s soul is leaving him.]
MC: Okay, so the two of you can do finger hearts together. Or you could form a large heart together, that’s fine, too. KGE suggested that you two just make a large heart together.
GY: You might as well just pour alcohol over me at this point. [?]
YIN: Why don’t you two just do something like this? [demonstrates LDW’s signature move where he pretends to shoot you in the heart etc]
LDW: What? Ah...That’s something we did during filming.
[GY and LDW form a large heart with their arms]
MC: Okay, so the cast has brought to you a very cute and lively atmosphere for this Goblin drama talk. Now, like GY said, we don’t have much time left. Sadly, we need to bid farewell to the cast of Goblin. Although we’ve talked [about] a lot, let’s all just say a few final things for the viewers of this V-App live broadcast. This time we’ll start from YIN.
YIN: The year of 2016... Right now we’re in the middle of a very cold winter, and there are many bad things happening. Even though we may feel frustrated/uneasy, I hope we can end 2016 on a good note through this drama. We’re working very diligently, and we hope everyone will love Goblin a lot!
LDW: A troubled [disaster-filled] year is about to end, and I hope that together with Goblin, everyone can welcome the end of 2016 with a cheerful mood. Also, the weather is getting colder, I hope everyone can stay healthy. Please love Goblin a lot, thank you!
GY: After a long time, I’m once again meeting you all through a television drama. Along with these great actors and friends who are sitting next to me, we will show everything we can, without regrets. Please anticipate [this]. Even though it sounds a bit arrogant if I say this, perhaps we will be able to present a drama whose quality [literally ‘handsomeness/coolness;] can live up to/match the level of expectations. So I wanted to carefully say, please anticipate. Thank you.
KGE: I... oh, do I look here? Okay. Right now, we... [laughs] ...are in the middle of filming, and it’s very interesting. Although a lot of heart-wrenching things have happened, everyone who has worked on filming this drama has a lot of energy, and are really enjoying the filming process that’s going so smoothly. [I think] If you watch it, you’d really enjoy it as well. Please cheer for Goblin a lot!
YSJ: Of course, I also think the drama is really awesome. The opportunity to meet these handsome and beautiful brothers and sisters is the honor of my life, and I’ve really learned a lot. I hope this is a drama that will help me grow/mature. Also, I kept seeing people telling me to greet the fans in the comments, they were asking me that in Korean. [waving] Hello!
MC: So in this way, the Goblin cast members have each given their final thoughts. Right now, the number of hearts has almost reached 127,000, and there are still a lot of people watching live. So we can see that a lot of people are really excited for the first broadcast of this drama. Unfortunately, our time here is up, and we have to end the drama talk for Goblin here. Thank you everyone! Let’s all face the camera and wave goodbye together. Next Friday, at 8 pm on December 2 is the live first broadcast on tvN, please anticipate Goblin! Thank you.
[Cast waving and saying their goodbyes/thank yous]

Night 05! Rise of the Vampires!
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome back to DMCrossroads! Before I get into today’s post, I feel like I need to warn you; this is going to be the most hyped post I’ll have written here so far. It may be the most hyped thing I’ve written in a long time, if not simply EVER! There’s going to be a lot of ALL CAPS WRITING and exclamation points to properly convey, in text, just how excited I am!
You see… Today is day 3 of the Commander 2017 spoiler week. And today…
They spoiled some Vampires.
If you don’t understand why that makes me hyped, then I’m going to quickly explain: I love Vampires. I. LOVE. VAMPIRES! There are very few Vampire products or sagas or universes that I don’t enjoy. Maybe a total of three or so, now that I think about it. In all the Vampire-related things that have ever been created, there MAY be three instances I was unhappy about.
And this Commander 2017 deck is NOT one of those things. I. Love. This. Deck.
And I can’t wait to talk to you about it. But before we do, I feel the need to do some house-keeping. Yesterday’s post came out before I saw two of the spoilers from the 8th of August. For the sake of being organized, I want to quickly talk about those two cards before we get started on today. Let’s go!
Mirror of the Forebears
Tumblr media
Mirror of the Forebears strongly resembles a Tribal-dedicated Mirage Mirror. If you haven’t been following the Commander VS episodes over at the StarCityGames YouTube channel, then you may not realize this, but the Magic Mirror (as Jeremy Noell and Stephen Green have nicknamed it) is an amazing piece that can find a home in nearly any and every deck. Mirror of the Forebears does something similar, albeit it limited to working within Tribal decks. Still, I can’t imagine what kind of deck I wouldn’t want to run this card in because if ONE awesome thing is awesome, TWO awesome things is TWICE AS AWESOME!
Qasali Slingers
Tumblr media
Qasali Slingers is an awesome card in the fact that it is basically a creature version of Aura Shards. And honestly, Green and White is really good at getting rid of pesky Artifacts and Enchantments, so the fact that this provides even more removal for those types of cards and aligns with Cat tribal is such a win! And the fact that it triggers off the Cat entering the battlefield and not on cast is very important because Flicker effects and token creators just became even more awesome!
Okay, so those two cards were awesome additions! I don’t want to downplay them in the slightest. BUT! … Let’s talk about some Vampires. And like the past couple of posts, I want to start with the big shebang RIGHT UP FRONT!

Hold on a second, I’m still trying to collect my thoughts and excitement for this. Don’t judge me, you don’t understand the over-hype that I’m currently over-hyping right now!
Let’s start with the simple stuff, like his name. You may or may not have noticed, but Legendary Creatures tend to come with a “,” somewhere in their name, followed by a title. They could have called this card “Edgar Markov, Father of Vampires” or “Edgar Markov, Lord of Innistrad” or even “Edgar Markov, Ruler of the Night”. But they didn’t. And I think I know why. Edgar Markov doesn’t need a title. Think about it. This IS the Father of Vampires on Innistrad. And seeing that Vampires were SUCH A THREAT to humanity that Sorin Markov felt they needed to be policed and created Avacyn to do so, I would wager that calling him the Lord of Innistrad or Ruler of the Night is EXTREMELY appropriate. But that’s all just fluff. Because THIS is Edgar Markov. No fluff needed.
Then we look at his art. We got to see it last week when the Commander 2017 page on Wizards.com had his art as splash art, but he wasn’t centered on the page. He was aligned to the right just a bit so they could fit the title of the page and some description wording without overlapping his face or armor. I agree 100% with how they handled the situation, but now seeing the art on the card, it’s amazing. Lord Markov (let’s be real, we’re not worthy to call him by his name!) is centered, surrounded by tending fledgling Vampires, a look of nobility and strength. His golden, black eyes are looking right at the player (or any poor fool of an opponent who picks him up to read his text) and staring into your soul. This is some prime art. THIS is the art… of Lord Edgar Markov!
Finally, let’s look at what he does. And wow, does he do it all or what? Sure, he costs 6, but he’s also a 4/4 with First Strike and Haste. That means he’s going to enter the battlefield SWINGING! But that’s not all he does. Let’s say you play him turn 6, but you were able to set up with two or three other Vampires in prior turns. That means you’ve gotten two or three Vampire tokens because of his Eminence ability. I want to draw very SPECIAL ATTENTION to this ability. Not only do we get tokens while casting Vampires and Lord Markov is in the Command Zone. We STILL get them while he is on the battlefield! We’re going to bring an ARMY of Vampires to fight! And Lord Markov empowers his forces, making them gain strength with just his command to attack! Unlike Drana, Liberator of Malakir, you can prevent Lord Markov’s damage, block him, but you cannot stop the benefit he is giving to his warriors. Honestly, the only complaint I have about this card is that he’s a Vampire Knight. Let’s be honest. Lord Edgar Markov is the Vampire King!
I could go on and on about this card and how I plan to make this deck. Because, trust me! I am going to be running Lord Edgar Markov at some point in the VERY near future! But there’s a ton of other cards and I don’t want to take up your entire evening. After all, there are Vampires about! You may want to ready your defenses before nightfall…
Licia, Sanguine Tribune
Tumblr media
I will openly admit that I was not nearly as excited about Licia, Sanguine Tribune as I was for Lord Edgar Markov (no, Lord is not leaving his name for most likely… Ever. Expect me to always refer to him as Lord from here on out!) despite the fact that I think they’re an interesting Legendary Creature. Why, you may ask? Well, for starters, the CMC on this one is REALLY high. I see that the cost is reduced by gaining life, but I have this stereotype of Vampires for Magic: the Gathering in my head that makes me think more of the “growing in strength via combat” by them gaining +1/+1 counters instead of thinking of a lifegain deck. Now, with that being said, if I stop thinking of Licia as a Vampire Commander and more of a Lifegain Commander, I start getting more excited. I once ran Karlov of the Ghost Council as a WB Lifegain Zombie Tribal deck, so utilizing lifegain to gain counters is not new to me. Then, I also notice that you can activate Licia’s +1/+1 counter ability once EACH TURN! Not each of YOUR TURNS, EACH TURN! So in a four-person game where I’m gaining tons of life, I could pay 20 into this Commander and get a 16/16 after a single round? Um. Yes. Yes, please. I think Karlov will be a great part of the 99 for a deck like this and I’m excited to see what Licia can really do!
I’ll also note that Reddit got super hyped over Licia because their armor appears to be Roman-esque in nature. Some people theorized that they may be from Theros and we’ll see a Greece vs. Roman style conflict in a return to Theros while others are hoping and praying for a Roman-based plane in the future that has Vampires incorporated into the government. Honestly, if it has Vampires in it, I don’t truly care where we go!
Mathas, Fiend Seeker
Tumblr media
Wizards, STOP WITH THE AMAZING ART! This guy looks EXTREMELY badass, and I can only imagine that the branding tool in his hand is either about to be used or just was used on some poor fool. Then I look at the stats on the card and I can’t help but get excited. A 3/3 body with Menace for three mana is awesome. And then I read the Bounty counter ability and it SCREAMS politics! “Hmm, see this creature we all don’t really like? I’m going to put a Bounty on it. Now if we get rid of it, we all benefit!” Definitely something I would play. And this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Bounty counters, so there’s some pre-existing synergy to build with in a deck led by Mathas.
That’s it for the Legendary Vampires that have been spoiled thus far. Someone on Reddit noticed that there are five Legendary Creatures spoiled for the Dragon deck, four for the Cat deck and only three for the Vampires, so there’s some theorizing that there will be another new Legendary Vampire at some point. I’d like to also provide the possibility that perhaps there will be more reprints in the decks that have fewer new Legendary Creatures. Vampires have tons of Legendary Creatures they could bring back, including two Drana’s, two Olivia’s, two Kalitas’ and more! So who knows what we’ll see once the decklists are revealed? For now, let’s talk about the non-Legendary Vampires we saw today.
Bloodsworn Steward
Tumblr media
Commander 2016 had a very unique card in one of the decks called Bastion Protector. My wife, Dani, fell in love with this card because it was another Aegis Angel for her Kaalia of the Vast deck. It looks like Vampires are bringing the “buff Commander cards” idea back and instead of giving Indestructible, the red-colored card is giving Haste. I’m excited to see the mechanic return and Haste is fine, but I almost wonder if Trample wouldn’t have been better. Haste is super important ONCE each time you play your Commander. Trample matters every attack phase it’s on the battlefield and we’ve seen Red start to share Trample with Green over the past couple of years. Remember the Red Archetype of Aggression from Theros? Still, this is a four mana 4/4 with flying that buffs your Commander and gives haste. All in all, an extremely efficient card!
Crimson Honor Guard
Tumblr media
I like everything about this card. The stats are spot on with a five mana 4/5 body with Trample. But the fact that it encourages people (or punishes them!) for not having their Commander on the battlefield seems hilarious! I mean, part of the reason we all love and play Commander is because you get to build this awesome deck around this awesome Legendary Creature! (Most of the time… I acknowledge some people build cards around COLORS instead of the Creature itself, but I will stand by the statement that normally, decks are built with what the Commander provides in mind). The only issue I could have with this card is if your own Commander is hard to cast, it may be a dud. Still, if you’re in a group that runs a lot of big stompy Commanders that you know won’t be out until turn seven or you plan on regularly sending back to the Command Zone… This might give you the upper hand with some nice damage!
Patron of the Vein
Tumblr media
Any time I see graveyard disruption on a card, I instantly want to buy as many as I can fit into decks with those colors. As a graveyard player (Hail the Golgari!) I know too well how crazy decks that rely on putting their own cards in the graveyard can get. A healthy amount of graveyard hate has a place in ANY DECK and I would say it’s as necessary as having ramp and draw. Not only does this card provide graveyard hate, it’s still very tribal by boosting EACH VAMPIRE YOU CONTROL when something gets exiled for dying. Sounds like a win/win for me!
New Blood
Tumblr media
So this spell obviously isn’t a Vampire itself, but as you read it, you can tell while I’m classifying it with the rest of the Vampire cards. I love taking people’s stuff. The first Vampire Tribal deck I ran was Commandered by Olivia Voldaren (as, I believe, most Vampire Tribal decks tend to be led by) and nothing was more fun than taunting my opponents by pinging their creatures and turning them into Vampires and then taking them. This card goes a step further and REPLACES TEXT ON THE TAKEN CARD so that whatever creature type it previously referenced now references Vampire instead. This doesn’t just turn the taken creature into Vampire, it can take an Elf Lord and make it a Vampire Lord. As a Krenko, Mob Boss player, I giggled with glee when I thought of taking Krenko from someone and making Goblins now say Vampires. Imagine making 1/1 Vampire tokens for each Vampire you control?! Please, Wizards, stop TOYING WITH MY EMOTIONS!
That was all the Vampire and Vampire-esque cards that were spoiled today! But we’re not done. Actually, we’re only about halfway… Because some AWESOME other cards were also spoiled! The first ones I want to talk about was the cycle of Curses!
Curse of Vitality
Tumblr media
Curse of Verbosity
Tumblr media
Curse of Disturbance
Tumblr media
Curse of Opulence
Tumblr media
Curse of Bounty
Tumblr media
I’m not going to go over each and every ability because you can read them for yourself and figure out which of your decks they will do the most work in. I do, however, want to mention that I am in love with Curses and have been since they first came out. I’ve been talking about wanting to run a Curse Commander deck and am constantly upset that there isn’t a Grixis colored Legendary Creature that I can work with. I’ve resigned myself to work with Nekusar the Mindrazer, since he’s the right colors, helps you draw cards and I don’t have to worry about losing my Curses like I would if I ran the deck under Jeleva, Nephalia’s Scourge. With that in mind, I noticed something VERY important about these Curses, since they’re new and improved! Remember that any time an opponent triggers one of these new Curses by attacking the cursed player, they’re not the only one getting the benefit. THESE Curses pay the attacker AND the owner of the curse! THAT IS SO COOL! It’s the ultimate political play. Sure, you want to attack this person because who doesn’t want 2 life, to draw a card, a 2/2 Zombie token, a Gold token or to untap their nonland permanents? Just know that anything you get, I get. You have to pay taxes on that benefit! Fantastic!
Finally, there was three other cards spoiled today and nearly all three were instantly gobbled up by the people as being awesome. Let’s talk about them before we wrap this SUPER LONG post up!
Disrupt Decorum
Tumblr media
Teferi’s Protection
Tumblr media
Kindred Charge
Tumblr media
For starters, seeing Kindred Charge after Kindred Discovery yesterday leads us to believe there will be five cards in a Kindred Cycle, just like the five Curse cards. This means there’s a White, Black and Green Kindred card that we haven’t seen yet. For today, though, Kindred Charge was instantly seen and loved by Krenko players. You mean I get MORE while I keep getting MORE from Krenko?! I’ll definitely be adding the card to my own Krenko deck!
Disrupt Decorum tickled the fancies of another set of Goblin players; Grenzo, Havoc Raiser already loves forcing chaos by making people attack each other with Goad. This spell can basically hit everyone at once and may put you in a position to sweep in for a win, or to just keep the chaos going by constantly hitting people with JUST ENOUGH creatures to keep the War of Goading going! I saved Teferi’s Protection for last because I think it made the biggest splash in the community. For starters, it’s an amazing card. It basically says you get a turn off from being touched, which is awesome on its own. Then you read the card and realize that Wizards printed a NEW card with Phasing on it. We haven’t seen this mechanic for YEARS, so the fact that they’re printing it now may be a hint that we should expect to see it in the future. While I’m loving the card, I’ll be the first person to admit that I don’t fully understand the rules behind Phasing and I’m not super excited to see the mechanic return en masse. However, if this is the only printing of it, I could definitely deal with that!
Wow. Again, this was a really long post and I hope you readers at least enjoyed it! I would love to hear from you on what you think about the new cards, what you think will come of the Wizards tomorrow, what decks you’re planning on putting what cards into, etc.!  NEW- [Past teaching- verses below]
Today I spent the whole day with my friends- I decided to turn on the video for a little bit.
But it actually turned out to be an in depth discussion about Predestination.
It was interesting to see how Crow watched some of my past teaching videos [good thing by the way] and had very insightful questions.
So I shared some of the history of the church- and the different views some hold to.
We actually got into an in depth talk about Universal-ism [the view that all get saved at the end- even satan]!
And what the historic church teaches about these different views.
Most of all you get to see my friends- and truly they live on the streets- all of them.
Some of the guys go to work- they come ‘home’ and are back out- like Claire likes to say ‘children who live under the stars’.
I found it interesting how Allen and Charlie both brought up a subject earlier in the day- yet neither of them realized they brought up the same thing- while the other was not there.
To me that's confirmation of how God speaks.
I actually was going to just let my friends talk a little- and was going to do my walk and teach something else [Zechariah].
But it worked out better this way.
The things I brought up- sometimes are considered taboo to even speak about.
But over the years as I have studied lots of church history its important- at least in my mind- to see how different churches have had different views about things.
That does not mean we should all change our views- but to try and understand how sincere Christians- thru their reading of the scriptures- have come to see things in different ways.
I also noticed thru my years of studying church history- that often times we are too quick to label others a cult- or not even saved.
Yes- there are important doctrines that one must believe in order to be a true Christian.
But there are many other doctrines we find in the bible- that are not fundamental to being saved.
When believers disagree on these- it’s better to have grace with one another- and not cut people off because their views are different than ours.
Ok- that's it for today- hopefully the discussion might peak your interest into studying some of what we talked about on your own.
God bless all-
John- and his friends.
NOTE- Right after I shut the video off- Bobby told me Danny died on Good Friday- not Easter.
PAST POSTS- [below are parts of past teaching I did that relate to today’s video- ‘Homeless friends ’- and complete studies I did on the bible that relate to today’s post]
https://ccoutreach87.com/protestant-reformation-luther/
https://ccoutreach87.com/romans-updated-2015/
I mentioned Origen on today’s video- below are my past teachings where I spoke about him-
(958)1ST CORINTHIANS 6: 1-7 Paul rebukes them for taking each other to court. He tells them ‘don’t you have any wise people among you who could handle this? Why go before unbelievers!’ he also tells them ‘plus, why even fight for your rights, if you think you have been wronged in some way by your brother, then simply see it as part of the cost of carrying your cross’. Paul contradicts the prevalent mindset in much of Christianity today. He doesn’t teach ‘get what’s yours, know your rights!’ he teaches the ethos of self denial, of living with the expectation of giving up your rights and dreams. Of taking loss, if it glorifies the Father. Now we get into some ‘stuff’. Paul appeals to them by saying ‘don’t you realize that we shall judge angels some day, we shall judge the world’. A few years back there was a debate going on in theological circles. Some theologians popularized a new way to look at God’s sovereignty. This new system was called ‘Open Theism’. Scholars like Clark Pinnock and others held out the possibility that God doesn’t foreordain all future events, they actually went further and said ‘he doesn’t know all future events’. Well of course this sparked off a firestorm among the Calvinists. Does scripture teach that God is sovereign and does know all that will happen? To be honest about it, yes. But the idea of open theism was saying ‘because God has chosen to give man free will, he, by his own design, has chosen to limit his knowledge in the area of knowing all of mans future choices’. In essence that God purposely ‘does not know’ the future outcomes of decisions that have not been made by humans. If free will is real [of course the Calvinists say no] then God must limit himself to knowledge in these areas. I personally do not believe this, but I think I needed to share it to explain this section of scripture. Paul does tell them they will judge the world and angels. In second Peter 2, the apostle says the fallen angels are being held for a future day of judgment. In Matthew [19-?] Jesus says those who follow him will play a part in a future ruling over human government. These scriptures do indicate that believers will play a role in future judgment scenarios. So if we ‘judge angels and the world’ we should be able to arbitrate between ourselves! Now, in the world of theology you have sincere questions on ‘is it fair for God to judge people who have never heard the gospel’ or ‘if God is truly sovereign in all things, even in predestinating certain people to salvation, then this is unfair’. Many have turned to universalism, or a belief in ‘no hell’ in order to quell these questions. I want to simply float a scenario to you. Jesus says ‘whosoever sins you remit [forgive] they are forgiven. Those you retain [not forgive] will be retained’ while there are differing views on these verses, I want you to see how these scriptures, in keeping with all that I just showed you, might leave us room for another possible way out of all the so called questions on Gods ‘fairness’. Say if at the judgment, we are all gathered [Calvinists, Arminians, Catholics,…] and say if we are all waiting to see who’s right ‘I’ll show that Arminian…I’ll show that Catholic…’ and we are at the day where the future destinies of millions are at stake. What will God do? It’s possible that much of the final decision will rest in the hands of the church. I know it sounds heretical, but keep in mind all the verses I just quoted to you. Say if all of our pompous pontificating [wow!] amongst varying theories of the atonement and universalism and all the other stuff. Say if Jesus turns to us and says ‘You are now going to make the most important judgment of your lives, you shall judge the world and angels’ and all of a sudden all of our scrutiny of God’s fairness turns on us. We see in the crowd of masses, faces of people who we hate. People who have been demonized by history [Darwin, Hitler]. Those we always wondered about [eastern religions] and now much of their final destiny rides on us. Even the possibility of fallen angels being forgiven! [Hey, maybe Origen was right?] The whole point of this scenario is to simply say we might have been asking the wrong questions all along. Now for sure, no one gets in without Jesus and his blood! But there are also a few other verses [Peter] that seem to indicate a second hearing [or first!] of the gospel before the final day. The point being how willing are you to really carry out something like this? Are you really ready for the great responsibility of having someone’s destiny depend on how forgiving you are? I really don’t believe 100 % in this scenario I just floated. But Jesus does put us in positions of responsibility all thru out our lives. He does say ‘whoever’s sins we don’t forgive, these sins will be held against them by your own choice’ we keep people in ‘chains of bondage’ today! Never mind the future. God has committed to us great responsibility as believers, if we are still fighting each other over insignificant things [taking our brothers to court, if you will] then we are truly not ready to ‘Judge the world’.
[parts](1227) 2ND CORITNHIANS 5- Paul speaks of the Christian hope- resurrection! This chapter can be confusing if not taken in context. You could think that Paul is saying when we die we have a house/room in heaven ‘waiting for us’ and this seems true enough. But he is really saying something more along the lines of ‘in heaven [Gods realm] we have a promise of a new body. The Spirit in us is the down payment, but full redemption will be complete when we are raised from the dead’ the hope is a new body, not our souls living some type of disembodied existence in a heavenly mansion. Now, Paul teaches us that this new covenant [last chapter] is one of reconciliation, not condemnation. That because of the work of the Cross, all men have been reconciled to God! It is therefore our job to tell them. In the field of Christian thought there have been thinkers [Origen, Carlton Pearson, etc.] who have dabbled with the doctrine of universalism. They believe that ultimately all people will be saved. I do not believe in this doctrine myself [though I wished it were true- I mean wouldn’t you want everyone forgiven and with God?] but those who embrace it find there reasoning in these types of verses. The New Testament teaches a theme of redemption that says ‘all men have been reconciled to God; Jesus has died for all men. God wills for all to be saved’ and it is because of this theme that some have held to universalism. The point I do want to make to all my orthodox friends is the New Testament message is one of total acceptance based on Christ’s death for us. Sometimes Christians ‘make it hard’ for people to ‘get saved’. The bible doesn’t make it hard, it says it’s a free gift that anyone can have [I know my Calvinist friends are upset right now, but heck I cant please all the people all of the time]. We want the world to know that ‘God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself’. These major themes need to be engrained into the mind of the church and the world. I am not talking ‘easy believism’ in the sense that God requires no repentance, but I am talking the reality of the free gift based upon what Jesus has done. There are so many people struggling with so many things, many have prayed and pleaded with God for change. Many have given up; they see God as a demanding judge whom they could never please. The message of the Cross is ‘you can’t please God, make up for your own sins. God placed those sins on Jesus, that’s why you can be accepted’. He was made sin for us, who knew no sin. That we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Once you see this truth, God will set you free. You will change, you will become ‘righteous’ but it’s a result of the Cross, not your own efforts.

[1568] ALEXANDRIA- EGYPT. Last night I was watching the news coverage of the demonstators in the streets of Egypt- they were protesting the government’s response [or lack] to the bombing of the church in Alexandria, the second largest city in Egypt [around 4 million people live in the city]. As I watched the sad story- in my mind I recalled all the times I have run across Alexandria in my studies of history. The city was founded by Alexander the great in the 4th century b.c.e. It had the largest library of the ancient world and was Egypt's capitol for around 900 years. When the Muslims took over in the 7th century Cairo became the new capitol [under another name at the time]. Alexandria was one of the great centers of Christian learning during the first few centuries of the 1st millennium of Christianity. I remember reading about the great church father Origen- he lived in the 3rd century and eventually would head up the school out of Alexandria- one of the first Christian schools of the day. The famous philosopher Plotinus also had a lot of influence in the city. It was sad to see the destruction on the news- so many years later. This morning I read Revelation chapter 13. The apostle John writes about the persecution of ‘the beast’ against the Christians- the apostle says he makes war against Gods people and overcomes them. We often neglect to see this aspect of scripture- I mean how many songs have you heard that say ‘the beast overcame us and killed us’. We like to sing stuff like ‘we overcome by the Blood of the Lamb’ [another verse from Revelation]. Yet the apostle foresees a time of persecution of the church that will include the deaths of many believers. Those who think the book of Revelation was written early [before a.d. 70] see Nero as the one who bares the mark of the beast- yes the popular 666 is in this chapter. Others who date the book later [around a.d. 90] see the emperor Domitian as the beast- either way John was speaking about a future ruler who would severely persecute the saints [and of course the most popular view today among evangelicals is the anti Christ is yet to come]. In verse 10 of the chapter John says those who kill with the sword, must die the same way- this is the patience of the saints. John is communicating to the 7 churches that he is writing to that they should not retaliate against their oppressors- they should patiently endure- knowing that the persecutors will eventually ‘hang themselves’ with their own rope. Of course the great empire of Rome would finally fall- and for those who see Nero as the 666 guy [my view] he eventually dies a shameful death as well [he killed himself].

(1335) GALATIANS 5- Paul’s main theme is if we possess the Spirit as believers [being indwelt by God’s Spirit] then let us also walk in/by the Spirit, as opposed to trying to please God by the law and being circumcised. Paul will use the somewhat controversial term ‘ye are fallen from grace’ which simply means that these Gentile believers started by faith and went back to the old Jewish system, much like the themes in the book of Hebrews. Paul says when you go back to the law you have left grace. Christ has ‘become of no effect to you, you who are justified by the law’. This is a good example of how words and certain phrases can develop over the centuries of church history and develop a different meaning over time. In essence the bible does teach that a person can ‘fall from grace’ but this does not describe what the modern reader might think. The first church father who attempted to formulate the Christian doctrine of the Trinity was a man named Tertullian, he lived in the second century and was what theologians refer to as one of the Latin fathers [as opposed to the Greek ones- Origen, etc.] Tertullian was famous for the sayings ‘what does Jerusalem have to do with Athens’ and ‘I believe because it is absurd’ he was resisting the influence of Greek philosophy on the church, he felt that Greek wisdom was influencing the church too much. He was trained in law before becoming a theologian [like Luther and Calvin of 16th century Reformation fame] and he used the words ‘God is one substance/essence and also three persons’ later church councils would agree with this language. But the word ‘person’ at Tertullian’s time was the Latin word ‘personi’ which was taken from the theater and meant a person/actor who would put on different masks during the play; the word had a little different meaning then what we think of today as ‘person’. Later centuries would come to condemn certain Christian groups who seem to have formulated language on the Trinity that expresses the same thing as what the original developer of the doctrine meant to say, but because words and their meanings change over time we get ourselves into disputes that might be getting us off track. Paul also tells the Galatians that if they become circumcised that they are obligating themselves to keep all the law. Of course the medical procedure that many have done in our day is not what he is speaking about, but in Paul’s day getting circumcised was the religious rite that placed you into the religion of Judaism, and this is what Paul is refuting among the Galatians, he tells them not to go down that road. This chapter has lots of good ‘memory verses’, the famous lists of the works of the flesh versus the fruit of the Spirit are found here, and it seems pretty clear to me that Paul identified circumcision with the moral law of the 10 commandments, that is he saw being circumcised as an act that obligated you to ‘keep all the law’ some theologians are discussing whether or not Paul meant the law of Moses when speaking about going ‘back under the law’ some think Paul was speaking only of the ceremonial law and the system of animal sacrifices when he was telling the gentiles that they should not go under the law, I believe if you read Paul in context both in this letter and the book of Romans, that he is speaking of the moral law too, not just the ceremonial law. All in all Paul exhorts these believers to fight for their right to be free from the past restraints of religion and bondage, he tells them to not desire to go back under a system of bondage, that Christ has made us free from that legalistic way of life and he has liberated us by giving us the Holy Spirit- if we ‘walk in the Spirit we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh, for the flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh, and these two are contrary one to the other, so that you cannot do the things that you would’ amen to that.

[1770] TREASURY OF MERIT
Let’s pick up where we left off 2 posts back. We were talking about Martin Luther and the events that led up to the Protestant Reformation.
In order to understand the key act that caused the protest- we will have to teach some Catholic history/doctrine.
In the 16th century Pope Julius began the effort to build St. Peters basilica in Rome. He got as far as laying the foundation and died. Pope Leo the 10th would pick up after him.
The church needed to raise money for the project- and the German prince- Albert- would play a major role.
It should be noted that both Catholic and Protestant scholars agree that the Popes of the day were pretty corrupt. They came from what we call the Medici line of Popes.
If you remember last month I wrote a post on the Renaissance- I talked about the Medici family and how they played a major role in supporting the Renaissance that took place in the 13th century in Florence Italy that would spread to the region.
Well this very influential family also played a big role in who would get top positions in the church.
At the time of Luther and prince Albert- if you had the right connections and the money- you could literally buy a position in the church.
Albert already held 2 Bishop seats- and there was an opening for an Archbishops seat in Mainz [Germany] and he wanted that one too.
It should be noted that official Canon law [church law] said you could only hold one seat at a time- Albert was bidding on his 3rd one! And he was too young for all of them.
So even the Pope and the officials held little respect for what the church actually taught at the time.
So Albert opens up negotiations with Leo- and the bidding starts AT 12,000 Duckets [money] Albert counters with 7,000- and they agree on 10,000. How did they justify the numbers? 12- The number of Apostles. 7- The 7 deadly sins. 10- The 10 commandments.
Yes- the church was pretty corrupt at the time.
So Albert works out a plan with Leo- he will borrow the money from the German banks- and pay the banks off by the Pope giving Albert the right to sell Indulgences.
 What’s an Indulgence?
Okay- this is where it gets tricky.
The ancient church taught a system called The Treasury of Merit. This was a sort of spiritual bank account that ‘stored up’ the good deeds of others over the years.
You had the good deeds of Jesus at the top- but you also had Mary and Joseph- the 12 Apostles- and other various saints thru out time.
The way the ‘bank’ worked was you could tap into the account by getting a Papal indulgence- a sort of I.O.U. that had the Popes guarantee that it would get so much time out of Purgatory for a loved one.
The actual sacrament that accesses the account is called Penance [confession].
When a penitent does penance- he confesses his sin to the priest- and he is absolved by the authority of the church that the priest has. The priest usually tells the person ‘say so many Hail Mary’s- Our Father’s’ and that’s a form of penance.
One of the other things the church practiced was called Alms Deeds. This term is found in the bible and it means giving your money to the poor- it is a noble act that Jesus himself taught.
In theory- part of the sacrament of penance was tied into Alms Deeds- you can access the account thru the practice of giving to the poor- which also meant giving to the church that helps the poor- and in the hands of the Medici line of Popes- meant outright giving money to the Pope.
So now you see how the abuse worked its way into the pockets of the faithful.
Albert now had the permission from Leo to sell these indulgences in Germany- and he would pick a certain corrupt priest to sell them in a place called Saxony- the region where Luther operated out of.
It should be noted that the Catholic Church never taught the crass act of ‘buying your way out of Purgatory’. The practice of including giving money as a part of the sacrament of penance was tied into the biblical principle of giving to the poor- a good thing.
But Tetzel and others abused the official meaning of the indulgence- and did make it sound like you could by your way out of Purgatory [in theory- a loved one might be in Purgatory for so many years- and through the indulgence you are actually getting time off for them- because the good deeds of others are now applied to the account].
The money Albert would raise- half would go to Rome for the building of St. peters- and half would go to pay off the banks in Germany- it was a sad system- and a sad time for the church as a whole.
It would be wrong to judge the entire church at the time as being corrupt- you did have many sincere Priests and Catholic men and women who saw the abuses and did not take part in them.
But there was corruption at the top- and this would eventually lead to the breakup of the church- and the launching of what we now call the Protestant Movement.
As a side note- it should be said that many Catholics and Protestants are not aware of the whole treasury of merit system- and the church never officially changed her position on the doctrine.
There were 3 Church councils since the time [Trent- 1500’s, Vatican 1- 1800’s and Vatican 2- 1962-65]. The Treasury of Merit never came up for change.
Obviously Protestants don’t believe in Purgatory- and it’s not my purpose in these posts to change Catholics into Protestants or vice versa- but to give all sides a clear view of the issues that divided us- and to try and be honest- and respectful during the process.
Does the bible teach anything like a Treasury of Merit? Well actually it does. The bible teaches that the righteousness of Christ is the treasury that people can access- by faith- and become righteous in the sight if God.
The idea- applied to Christ- is good.
But in the hands of the Medici Popes- and the ambitious prince of Germany- it would lead to disaster.

(955)1st CORINTHIANS 5:6-8 Okay, lets get back to Corinthians. ‘Your glorying is not good, get rid of the old leaven. Don’t you know that a little yeast can affect the whole lump? Get rid of it, you are all unleavened, Christ is our new Passover Lamb who has been sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with the old leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth’ [my own paraphrasing]. A few things. I want you to see something here, over the years I have read and studied lots of great theologians. It is common for these brothers to go back to the reality of the early church fathers belief in the ‘Real Presence’ of Christ in the Eucharist [Lords supper]. It is also becoming less common [in theological circles!] to defend the symbolic view of the Lords Supper. I believe Paul is presenting the idea of all believers spiritually sitting at the ‘table of life’ on a daily basis and receiving from Christ’s new life in a spiritual/symbolic way. He clearly says ‘let us keep the feast with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth’ [clearly symbolic!] Peter writes of the new sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving. Jesus speaks in an interesting way about this in John chapter 6. The Jews ask him ‘show us a sign, Moses gave us bread to eat from heaven. If you’re from God then prove it like Moses’. I find it interesting that in the key chapter of Jesus being the bread that comes down from heaven, the conversation turns to Moses. The beginning of the chapter does say the Passover feast was getting close, but the imagery is Moses and Manna. Moses represented the Old system of law and works, John’s gospel tells us that ‘the law came from Moses, but grace and truth from Jesus’. Jesus contrasts himself with Moses. He says ‘I am the real bread that has come down from heaven, if men eat my flesh and drink my blood they will live’. Now we must understand the tremendous offence this statement caused. The Jewish people had Levitical laws [commands in their law] that forbid the drinking of any type of blood, never mind the blood of a person! But yet Jesus would speak this way to them. In the conversation the hearers acknowledge the difficulty of the saying, Jesus will say ‘the flesh profits nothing, it is the Spirit that gives you life. The words I am speaking to you are Spirit and life’. At the last supper [which was the symbolic end of the Passover and the beginning of a new celebratory meal centered on the final sacrifice of Jesus, the Lamb of God] Jesus seems to be saying ‘from now on, as long as you do this, you are showing my death until I come again’ [we get this from Paul later on in Corinthians]. As you put all of this imagery together, you get the sense of the New Covenant being one of an ongoing continual New Covenant meal from which all believers daily eat from and ‘keep the feast with the new leaven of truth and sincerity, not the old leaven of sin and wickedness’. You clearly see a symbolic element in this language. Now, I do not discount the importance of the actual ordinance of the Lords Table. I recently defended the Catholic idea to an ex Catholic who is now Protestant. They said ‘how can people believe something so silly’ I had to say that many serious intellectual believers accept the Real Presence doctrine by faith in the literal reading of Jesus words. Luther himself believed it, he made no bones about it when he slammed his fist on the table in his dispute with Zwingli and said ‘this IS MY BODY!’ [I think he slammed his fist, he might have carved it in the table?] Standing for the literal interpretation of the sacrament. John Wesley, the founder of the great Methodist movement, wrote many hymns speaking of the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. So make no mistake about it, many good believers hold to the literal belief. I just wanted you to see that it is also in keeping with the scripture to see the entire Christian walk as one huge ongoing ‘feast’ that is kept with spiritual sacrifices and symbolic language. Jesus is the bead that came down from heaven, those who would stay with ‘Moses bread’ [law] would die, those who would eat from this new table would live forever.

(1076) Being we are in between studies I thought I might talk a little on the books I recently read. One was an older scholarly work on revivals and ‘revivalism’. It covered the history of the great awakenings [18th-19th century America], while I am familiar with this period and have read on it before, the interesting thing I learned was the intense disagreement between the Arminians [those who reject the classic doctrines of Predestination] and the Calvinists. The degree of anti-Calvinism was surprising. Many average readers of church history do not realize the role that Calvinism played in the beliefs of many of the famous reformers [Spurgeon, Edwards, Whitefield]. Also the intense disagreement between the ‘new measures’ [altar call] and the more reserved churches. I must admit I personally came to distrust the amount of weight that is put on the evangelical ‘altar call’. I remember as a new believer, being excited about the things of the Lord, I was working for a construction crew and worked with a bunch of good old boys. They were around my age [19-20] and were local Texans. I was this Yankee from New Jersey, but I liked the brothers. I remember how after witnessing to them non stop for a period of around a year, one of them sincerely tells me ‘Oh, we are all saved, we all got saved as kids in our churches’. I realized the popular terminology of ‘getting saved’ and associating that with the evangelical altar call, was just as legalistic as some of our Catholic brother’s trust in infant baptism and the sacraments. That is the Protestants would criticize the Catholics for ‘trusting in tradition’ while they were just as bad! So in the recent book they showed the intense disagreements over this, many reformed brothers felt that telling people to raise their hands ‘in church’ and come to the altar to ‘get saved’ was simply giving false hope to many people who clearly had no real understanding of the gospel. But the other extreme was the strong Calvinists who seemed to indicate that total passivity was the way to go. Some got the impression that you could not make ‘a choice’ to follow the Lord, so they didn’t. For the most part I recognize that it is possible to have gone thru all the motions [whether Protestant or Catholic] and to lack a real trust and faith in Christ, but some carry this too far and judge others as ‘not being saved’ because they did not say ‘the sinners prayer’ or ‘accept Jesus into their heart’. The scriptures clearly teach that those who believe in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, that they are children of God. Now, I realize this is not speaking of simple American ‘I believe in God’ type faith, where people have no real walk with the Lord. But we also don’t want to reduce salvation to an evangelical [or Catholic] technique that you blindly follow in order to ‘get saved’. My well meaning friend who told me ‘we are all saved’ was simply viewing ‘being saved’ from a religious lens, just like a cradle Catholic might view the sacraments. I believe we should encourage people to have a strong commitment to the faith, trusting and relying on Christ’s work for our redemption, but we need to be careful that we are not viewing ‘being saved’ only thru our own religious paradigm.

(846)ROMANS 8:29-30 ‘for whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed into the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: whom he justified, them he also glorified’. Let’s talk a little. When I first became a Christian I began a lifelong study of scripture, where I continually read a certain amount of scripture every day for many years. Over the years I have varied on how fast I should read [that is how many chapters per day and so forth]. But during the early stages I always took these verses to teach predestination in the classical sense. Simply put, that God ‘pre chose’ me [and all whom come to him] before we ‘chose him’. The Fundamental Baptist church I began to attend [a great church with great people!] taught that ‘classic Calvinism’ [predestination] was false doctrine, and they labeled it ‘Hyper Calvinism’. I simply accepted this as fact. But I never forgot the early understanding that I first gleaned thru my own study. I also was very limited in my other readings outside of the scripture. I did study the Great awakenings and Charles Finney. I read some biographies on John Wesley and other great men of God. These men were not Calvinistic in their doctrine [which is fine], as a matter of fact Wesley would eventually disassociate from George Whitefield over this issue. Whitefield was a staunch Calvinist! Over time I came to believe the doctrine again, simply as I focused on the scriptures that teach it. Eventually I picked up some books on church history and realized that Calvinism was [and is] a mainstream belief among many great believers. I personally believe that most of the great theologians in history have accepted this doctrine. Now, for those who reject it, they honestly struggle with these portions of scripture. Just like there are portions of scripture that Calvinists struggle with. To deny this is to be less than honest. The Arminians [Those who deny classic predestination- the term comes from Jacob Arminias, a Calvinist who was writing and studying on the ‘errors’ of ‘arminianism’ and came to embrace the doctrine of free will/choice] usually approach the verses that say ‘he predestined us’ by teaching that Gods predestination speaks only of his foreknowledge of those who would choose him. This is an honest effort to come to terms with the doctrine. To be ‘more honest’ I think this doesn’t adequately deal with the issue. In the above text, as well as many other places in scripture, the idea of ‘Gods foreknowledge and pre choosing’ speak specifically about Gods choice to save us, as opposed to him simply knowing that we would ‘choose right’. The texts that teach predestination teach it in this context. Now the passage above does say ‘those whom he foreknew, he also did predestinate to be conformed into the image of Christ’ here this passage actually does say ‘God predestinated us to be like his Son’. If you left the ‘foreknowledge’ part out, you could read this passage in an Arminian way. But we do have the ‘foreknowledge’ part. So I believe Paul is saying ‘God chose us before we were born, he ‘knew’ ahead of time that he would bring us into his Kingdom. Those whom he foreknew he also predestinated to become like his Son.’ Why? So his Son would be the firstborn among many. God wanted a whole new race of ‘children of God’. Those he predestinated he ‘called’. He drew them to himself. Jesus said ‘all that the Father give to me will come to me, and him that cometh to me I will in no way cast out’. Those who ‘come’ are justified, those who are justified are [present tense] glorified. Gods design and sovereignty speak of it as a ‘finished task’ like it already happened. God lives outside of the dimension of time. I believe in the doctrine of predestination. Many others do as well. You don’t have to believe it if you don’t want to, but I believe scripture teaches it.

VIDEO- [I cover stuff on the videos that are not in the post- here are a few]
.Council of Trent- what did the Church say?
.Do we get the final say- at the Judgment?
.What are the Catholic virtues- did Paul teach them?
.Augustine, Calvin, Whitfield and Wesley.
.Infusion or Imputation? How bout both!
At the bottom I added some quotes from the Catechism of the Catholic church- to show that the official teaching of the church DOES NOT TEACH SALVATION BY THE LAW- BUT BY CHRIST.
. REMINDER- This is a commentary I wrote years ago- the videos are new.
.CHAPTER 8- FEW POINTS;
1- Did God choose us to believe- or did we choose him?
2- When Paul says ‘he makes our bodies alive’ is he only speaking about resurrection?
3- Does God use difficulty- or is it to be rebuked?
4- Was Paul a ‘hyper- Calvinist’?
(839)ROMAN 8:1-4 ‘There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh [sinful nature] but after the Spirit [new nature]’. Now, having proved the reality of sin and guilt [chapter 7] Paul teaches that those who ‘are in Christ’ are free from condemnation. Why? Because they ‘walk according to the Spirit’ the ‘righteousness of the law is being fulfilled in them’. Having no condemnation isn’t simply a ‘legal function’ of declared righteousness, and Paul didn’t teach it that way! Paul is saying ‘all those who have believed in Jesus and have been legally justified [earlier arguments in chapters 3-4] are now walking [actually acting out] this new nature. Therefore [because you no longer walk according to the flesh] there is no condemnation’! This argument helps bridge the gap between Catholic and Protestant theology, part of the reason for the ongoing schism is over this understanding. After the Reformation the Catholic Church had a Counter Reformation council, the council of Trent. They dealt with a lot of the abuses of the Catholic Church, things that many Catholic leaders were complaining about before the Reformation. They did deal with some issues and reformed somewhat. To the dismay of the more ‘reform minded’ Catholics [with Protestant leanings] they still came down strong on most pre reform doctrines. This made it next to impossible for the schism to be healed. But one area of disagreement was over ‘legal’ versus ‘actual/experiential’ justification. The Catholic position was ‘God can’t declare/say a person is justified until they actually are’ [experientially]. The Protestant side [Luther] said ‘God does justify [legal declaration] a person by faith alone’. Like I taught before, both of these are true. The Catholic view of ‘justification’ is looking ahead towards a future reality [The same way James speaks of justification in a future sense- He uses the example from Genesis 22, when Abraham does a righteous act] while the Protestant view is focusing on the initial legal act of justification [Genesis 15]. Here Paul agrees with both views, he says ‘those who walk after the Spirit [actually living the changed life] have no condemnation’.
(840)ROMANS 8:5-13 Paul will teach the impossibility of the ‘carnal minds’ ability to submit to Gods law. Those who are ‘in the flesh’ [the unregenerate nature- not simply ‘in the body’. We will get into these distinctions in a minute] can’t submit to God. Society spends so much time and effort trying to get the ‘lost man’ to do what's right. The prohibition movement [outlawing liquor], the increase in the severity of punishment for crimes dealing with drugs. Making the child kidnappers crime punishable by death. While all these laws are necessary and good [though some debate the wisdom of the kidnapper one, they think the kidnapper might just go ahead and kill the victim if the same punishment applies to both crimes] they have little effect on getting ‘the carnal man to submit’. Paul also says ‘if the Spirit of him who raised up Christ from the dead dwells in you, then he that raised up Christ from the dead shall quicken [make alive] your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwells in you’. Let’s do a little teaching here. Most commentators see this as speaking of the promise of the resurrection ‘your mortal bodies’. I see this more in line with the context of chapter 7. The discussion of ‘mortal bodies’ [your actual body, the flesh- which is different than ‘the fleshly nature’ which refers to the sinful nature] speaks of your actual life now ‘let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies’. Also in verse 13 of this chapter the same theme is seen ‘if ye thru the Spirit mortify the deeds of the body ye shall live’. I believe Paul is primarily saying ‘if you are in the Spirit [born of God] the Spirit of life will make alive your physical life in such a way that you will glorify God in your body and spirit, which are Gods’ [Corinthians]. Chapter 12 says your bodies are living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God. Now later on in this chapter [8] we do see the resurrection, which is called ‘the redemption of the body’ [verse 23] so these two concepts work together. The fact that the believer is ‘training his mortal body’ for God [thru obedience] is sort of a precursor to the resurrection! Now, some believers confuse the resurrection of the body and the work of regeneration in ‘making you alive’ [Ephesians 2]. The work of regeneration brings your dead spirit back to life [born again] when you believe [which is a Divine imputation of faith at the moment of conversion, a sovereign act]. This ‘coming alive’ is purely spiritual. This qualifies you for the future physical resurrection of the body [Ephesians calls this the ‘down payment’, the ‘earnest of our inheritance, until the redemption of the purchased possession’. The word ‘earnest’ here is used in the same way as ‘earnest money’ in a real estate transaction. The fact that we have been ‘sealed’ with the Holy Spirit is our ‘guarantee of future bodily resurrection’]. Bishop N.T. Wright, the bishop of Durham [the church of England- Durham is the 3rd most influential post in the Church of England. Canterbury is at the top] has recently written on the truths of the resurrection of the body. He is an excellent scholar, way way above my league. He has been instrumental in ‘re introducing’ the reality of Christ’s resurrection as well as our future resurrection as a very real Christian belief [and historic truth as well]. I have read some of Wrights stuff and am a little surprised at some of the ideas on ‘soul sleep’ and the immortality of the soul. Bishop Wright seems to side with some of the ideas that certain restorationist groups [7th day Adventists] espouse, that the Catholic Church kind of corrupted the ideas of heaven and the soul by being overly influenced by Greek thought. While it is possible for Bishop Wright to have come to his understanding entirely thru scripture and history, yet I felt it a little strange to see him make these arguments. For the most part I like brother Wright and totally agree with his stance on the future ‘new heavens and new earth’ as the final place of rest [as opposed to dying and going to heaven now, which is a temporary place] but there is the biblical reality of a present ‘heaven’ and this doesn’t only come from Greek thought. I have often used the Christian doctrine of the new heavens and new earth while speaking with the Jehovah’s witnesses, I always agree on the reality of a future kingdom on earth. I simply steer the conversation back to ‘who qualifies for it’ and get straight to the gospel. Well anyway we have a promise of a future resurrection, and also a ‘quickening of the body now’ [God actually using our physical life to glorify him]. These are both great truths!
(841)ROMANS 8: 14-18 ‘For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the Sons of God’. Many of us are familiar with this verse [I hope!]. We often see it as saying ‘Gods direction in our lives is proof that we are Christians’ true enough. But in context ‘being led by Gods Spirit’ means living the new life thru Christ. The putting to death of the old man and being ‘made alive’ thru Christ is what this is saying. Paul agrees with John [1st John] ‘those that do what is right [led by the Spirit] are of God’. Paul says ‘we have received the Spirit and a natural result of this is crying “Abba, Father”. I don’t want to do too much here, but Paul sees the ‘confession’ and heart cry of the believer as proof, a result of being ‘a habitation of the Spirit’. A sign, if you will, of being born of God is confessing/ praying to the Father. Paul quoted David in chapter 4 ‘for this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found’ [Psalms 32- actually Paul quotes a different section from the Psalm, but this theme is consistent with Paul’s view]. Paul knew the reality of ‘the godly calling upon God’ they have an inner cry of ‘Abba, father’. ‘We are heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ’. For many years this has been a popular verse among many believers, often times it is used to say ‘God owns the cattle on a thousand hills’ [which he does] therefore if we are heirs ‘give me some cattle’! [stuff]. Here Paul uses this term in speaking of our identification with Christ’s sufferings. ‘If we suffer with him, we too shall share [joint heir!] in his glory’ [future glorification at the resurrection- we shall see him and be changed in a moment, at the twinkling of an eye. This mortal shall put on immortality]. It’s a symptom of modern American Christianity to view all these scriptures thru a materialistic lens, Paul held to the promise of a future reward [at the resurrection] that enabled him to go thru great difficulty and suffering in this present life. He counted the suffering as a privilege that he shared with Christ.
(843)ROMANS 8: 19-25 ‘the sufferings of this present time [are you ‘presently’ suffering?] are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us’. Paul compares the difficulty to the reward. The reward here is the future resurrection. Paul did not see suffering as ‘from the devil’ or the reward as something material [monetary stuff! The resurrection body will be ‘material’ - real]. Paul teaches that the whole creation is waiting for this day. Not only will we get a ‘makeover’ but there will be a new heaven and a new earth! The creation itself longs for this [almost as much as Al Gore!] This resurrection is called ‘the redemption of our body’. The next verse says ‘we are saved by hope’. John also says [1st John] that the future reality of the resurrection ‘causes us to be pure in this life’ [every one that has this hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure]. Why? Because we know God has a purpose for our bodies as well as our spirits! The ‘getting saved by hope’ simply means the future hope of the resurrection ‘encourages’ us to live clean now. Once again ‘saved’ is a neutral term. In can apply to all sorts of things. I always found it funny how when you read certain commentaries, that you see the difficulty Christians have when coming across these types of verses. There’s a verse that says ‘the woman will be saved thru childbearing’ geez, you wouldn’t believe the difficulty some writers have when they come across this stuff. Some teach ‘she will be ‘saved’ thru the birth of a child [Jesus]’ and all sorts of stuff. I think if we simply changed the word ‘saved’ for ‘delivered’ [which are basically the same thing] that maybe this would help. But thank God that we have a future resurrection to look forward to, let this truth ‘deliver’ you from the temptation to think ‘what’s all this suffering worth, why even go thru it?’ Because we have a great promise at the other end!
(845)ROMANS 8:26-28 ‘Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities’ why does Paul say ‘likewise’? He is saying ‘not only does the future hope of the resurrection sustain us, but also Gods Spirit helps us’! He knows how to make intercession for us in ways that we cannot. I just finished an hour prayer time, not an ‘official’ intercession time [which I do a few times a week now]. But an ‘unofficial’ time where I try and hear what the Spirit is speaking. When you are ‘praying in the Spirit’ [which can include the charismatic expression of tongues] you are depending upon the Spirit to transcend your limited ability to articulate what needs to be said. ‘All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are ‘the called’ according to his purpose’. A very famous verse indeed. What does it mean? It means what it says! Over the years I have heard so many excuses for trying to get around difficult things. Why do the righteous suffer? Some taught it was because of their ignorance of scripture. Why did the things that happened to Job happen? Some said it was because he ‘feared’ that the things would happen [this group seems to miss the whole underlying reason for the book. Job’s friends are continually looking for a reason thru out the book. The point is, sometimes there is no reasonable explanation. I realize you can pick apart certain statements from Job and come up with ‘reasons’, but the meaning of the book is God is sovereign and we shouldn’t always think we can figure him out or ‘work the system’]. Here Paul says ‘whatever is happening to you right now [even very bad stuff!] will eventually work out for you benefit’. What about Hitler? Did he love God? I don’t believe so. This scripture says ‘to them that love God’. Your only responsibility thru the difficulty is to ‘love God’.
(846)ROMANS 8:29-30 ‘for whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed into the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.  (847)ROMANS 8: 31-39 ‘What shall we say then to these things? [what things? The fact that God predestined us and has guaranteed completion of the purpose he has designed us for!] If God be for us, who can be against us?’ Paul teaches that Christ is the only one with the ‘right’ or authority to pass judgment. If the only person in existence who can ‘officially’ condemn and pass legal judgment has actually died for us for the purpose of ‘freeing us from a state of condemnation’, then who ‘gives a rip’ about others opinions and views of us? Most of us struggle with how others view us. Paul did teach that Elders should have good character and a fine reputation in the community. But there is another type of ‘persona’ that preachers can fall into. A sort of ‘concern’ about what the critics are saying. In this context Paul says ‘If the opinion of the only person in existence whose opinion really matters, is one of “I accept you unconditionally, I declare you free from what others think, you are my beloved son in whom I am well pleased. Ever since I have known you, you have been pleasing in my sight” [all true scriptures by the way] Then who cares what others think! Paul also teaches that nothing can separate us from Christ’s love ‘not tribulation or distress or famine or persecution’ IN all these things we are more than conquerors thru him who loved us. Most times we view this passage from a ‘Calvinistic’ lens. I want you to see the impact of this statement thru a different lens. In the American church we have taught people ‘would a good father not pay the bills of his kids? Would a good father allow his kids to suffer? If you were really partaking of the New Covenant you would have it made’. While I do realize that many well meaning ministers have taught these viewpoints with honest and sincere hearts, I also have seen how this mindset accuses the saints. It basically tells the struggling believer ‘what kind of father do you have? If he really loved you would you be going thru these things’? In essence we are saying ‘tribulation and distress and persecution’ are all signs that ‘you have been separated from Gods love’! Paul blows this false [materialistic] mindset out of the water. He says it is thru these things that we are more than conquerors. It is the ability to look into the face of Pontius Pilate and say ‘you have no power over me, my father has permitted these things to take place. I am here to lay my life down for his glory’. Paul said all these things we are suffering are opportunities to glorify our father. To look into the face of society and say ‘nay, we are more than conqueror's thru him that loved us’. The early church set the world on fire when they were laying their lives down for the cause, refusing to deny their Lord even at the point of death. They were ‘more than conquerors’.
 ROMANS 9-
.PAUL- SPURGEON- AND DAVE HUNT- DID THEY BELIEVE IN PREDESTINATION?
.HOW DOES PAUL DEFEND AGAINST THE SEEMING ‘UNFAIRNESS’ OF IT?
.WHAT DID THAT RUSSIAN ATHIEST SAY?
(848)ROMANS 9: 1-8 Paul returns to an earlier theme ‘Christ came, as pertaining to the flesh, in response to the covenants that God made with Israel’ [my paraphrase!] Paul says that natural Israel played a very important role in the coming of Messiah. He was [is] the fulfillment of the prophecies that came as a result of Gods interaction with ‘the commonwealth of Israel’. Now Paul again says ‘they are not all Israel, which are of Israel, but “in Isaac shall thy seed be called’”. Understand something here, Paul is not teaching ‘another’ natural lineage to Christ. The mistake of the worldwide church of God [Herbert Armstrong] which teaches British Israelism, trying to trace the natural lineage of Europeans and saying ‘these are the lost tribes’. Paul is simply saying ‘those who are of the Law, the natural tribe of Israel [Jews] are not automatically counted as ‘the seed’ [children] but those who ‘are of promise’. Paul also uses this in Galatians 3 and 4. ‘Of promise’ is simply saying ‘those who have been born of Gods Spirit [Jew or Gentile] are the children that God promised to Abraham’ he is the father of ‘many nations’. All who would believe. These themes are building upon Paul’s earlier theology in this letter. This letter [Romans] has a little more ‘weight’ than say a pastoral epistle [Timothy, Titus]. Now, I am not saying it is ‘more inspired’ but I want you to see that even in the book of Acts you see Paul place special emphasis on ‘I must make it to Rome’! Paul fully realizes that this letter will be read among the believers and Jews at Rome. Rome is the capitol city of the Empire. He wants the early believers to understand the role and purpose of God for Israel. Paul’s efforts are being seen by some Jewish believers [Jerusalem] as antagonistic. Paul wants to make it clear that he was not trying to start some type of movement that rejected natural Israel. At the same time he wants natural Israel ‘my kinsman according to the flesh’ to receive their Messiah! So in this context Romans is a theological treatise saying ‘God wants to bring both Jew and Gentile together as one new man in Christ [Ephesians]’. When he argues ‘they that are the children of the flesh ARE NOT THE CHILDREN OF GOD[verse 8] but the children of the promise are counted for the seed’ he is simply saying ‘all people, both Jews and Gentiles [which includes all races that are ‘non Jews’ even Arabs!] can partake of this free gift by grace’. The promise is to all who ‘will believe’.
(849)ROMANS 9:9-23 now we get into predestination. Paul uses the example of Jacob and Esau [I spoke on this in the Genesis study, see chapter 25], he says God chose Jacob over Esau before they were born. He also uses the story of Pharaoh and says God was the one who hardened his heart. Paul says these things show us that God’s mercy and choice are a sovereign act. He specifically says ‘God chose Jacob, not on the basis of any thing he did [or would do!] but because of his own sovereign choice’. Now, this is another one of those arguments where Paul says ‘you will then say to me, how can God find fault? If everyone is simply doing the things he preordained, fulfilling destiny, then how can God justly hold people accountable’? First, I want you to see that this statement, that Paul is putting into the mouths of his opponents, only makes sense from the classic position of predestination. Second, if predestination only spoke of Gods foreknowledge of the choices that people were going to make [like asking Jesus into their heart!] then the obvious response to the argument would be ‘Oh, God chose Jacob because he knew what a good boy he was going to be’. Not only would this be wrong, Jacob [the supplanter] was not a ‘good boy’, but Paul does not use this defense in arguing his case. He simply says ‘who are we to question God? Can the thing formed say to him that formed it “why have you made me like this”? It seems as if Paul’s understanding of predestination was in the Augustinian/Calvinistic Tradition. A few years back a popular author on the west coast, Dave Hunt, wrote a book called ‘what kind of love is this’? He took on the Reformed Faiths understanding of predestination. Dave was a little out of his league in the book. He seemed to not fully grasp the historic understanding of the doctrine. He quoted some stuff from Charles Spurgeon that made it sound like he was not a believer in predestination. Spurgeon did make strong statements against certain ideas that were [are] prevalent in classic Calvinism. Some taught that Christ’s Blood was shed only for the elect. This is called ‘particular redemption’ or from the famous ‘Tulip’ example ‘limited atonement’. Spurgeon did not embrace the idea that Christ’s Blood was not sufficient to cover the sins of the whole world. The problem with Hunt using this true example from Spurgeon, is that he overlooked the other obvious statements from Spurgeon that place him squarely in the Calvinistic camp. Some refer to this as ‘4 point Calvinism’. I myself agree with Spurgeon on this point. The reason I mention this whole thing is to show you that major Christian figures have dealt with these texts and have struggled with the obvious difficulties involved. I think Paul does a little ‘speculative theology’ himself in this chapter. He says ‘what if God willing to show his mercy and wrath permitted certain things’. He gives possible reasons for the seeming ‘unfairness’ of this doctrine. The point I want to stress is Paul never tries to defend it from the classic Arminian understanding, that says ‘God knew the way people were going to choose, and he simply ‘foreordained’ those who would choose right’. To be honest, this argument does answer the question in the minds of many believers, I simply don’t see it to be accurate.
(851)ROMANS 9:24-29 Paul quotes Hosea and Isaiah to show that God has a purpose for both Jew and Gentile. He uses a few verses from Isaiah 10 and 13 to say ‘except the lord had left us a remnant, no one would be left’. Now, once again we come up against the mindset of always reading ‘saved’ as meaning ‘born again’. In context, God ‘saving’ a remnant simply means ‘he spared them from ruin and total destruction’. There is a verse in Revelation that says ‘the nations of them which are saved shall enjoy the new heavens and earth’. Some commentators will show you how some versions leave out ‘which are saved’ which would leave the text as saying ‘the nations [that are left, remain!] shall walk in it’. This is the context here. Paul is saying God always had a few from Israel that remained, he didn’t utterly wipe them out. Now, this of course fits in with ‘having sins forgiven’, being ‘saved’ or redeemed. There are prophets who say ‘the Lord will turn away ungodliness from Jacob’ [delivered from sin] and ‘the lord comes to those who have turned away from their sin’ speaking of Israel. So I want you to grasp the biblical concept of God saving [sparing] a remnant. The word ‘remnant’ actually speaks of the part of cloth/ material that is ‘left over’ from the whole piece. Jesus also said ‘unless those days were shortened, their would no flesh “be saved”’. Once again meaning ‘no human would survive unless God cut short his wrath’. Paul also uses this language here ‘the lord will do a quick work on the earth and cut it short [shortened!] in righteousness’.
(853)ROMANS 9: 30-33 ‘What shall we say then? That the Gentiles which followed not after the law of righteousness have attained it, even by faith’.  Paul concludes the chapter by summing up his ‘righteousness by faith’ argument. Natural Israel, who sought to become righteous by law, who were always striving for perfection thru the keeping of the law. They did not attain that which they sought after. Why? Because they sought it ‘not by faith, but by law’. No law could ever make a man righteous. The Gentiles, which were not even looking! They got it. Why? Because they simply believed in the Messiah, it was the best message they ever heard. They were told their whole lives ‘you are separated from Gods promises. You are not included in the commonwealth of Israel’. They never dreamed that the Jewish Messiah would say ‘neither do I condemn thee, go and sin no more’. They received Gods righteousness by faith. Israel ‘stumbled’ at the stumbling stone. Jesus is called a precious stone and also a rock of offence. To those who believe, he is great, precious. To those who don’t believe he is this tremendous obstacle. The unbelieving world doesn’t know what to do with him. I was watching Ravi Zacharias the other night. He is a good Christian apologist. He was telling the story of being in Russia and speaking to a large group of Atheists. During his talk they were really aggressive, making motions with their hands and all. He was told ahead of time to be prepared. At the question and answer time a Russian Atheist asked ‘what are you talking about when you say God? I have no idea what you mean by this false concept’. Ravi asked him ‘sir, are you an Atheist?’ He replied yes. ‘What is an Atheist’? Ravi asked. The man responded ‘someone who denies God’. Ravi said ‘what exactly is it that you are denying’? The unbeliever has come up against this ‘rock of offence’. He tries to get around it, to develop all types of systems and philosophies to deny it. The rock is there, you can either ‘fall on it’. That is admit he is who he claims to be. Submit and be ‘broken’. Or it will eventually ‘grind you to powder’. You will pass from the scene and the next crop of Atheists will rise and face the same dilemma. This rock ‘aint going away’.

3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.
4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

25 He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

I wrote all these on the same page but I made breaks in between enjoy!!
John 15:5 I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him he will bear much fruit apart from me you can do nothing
We can literally do nothing without God He gives us everything we need for every situation. Apart from Him we are dead spiritually. My life was a tragedy I was working 4 hours a week at Starbucks my life was full of hate and drugs I was on a high way to hell. But God saved me He gave me everything I needed when I came to Him he showed me the way of life and good living He showed me to keep going through tough times He gave me those hard times to purify my faith and to keep going no matter what. I know God has got me he directs my every step he helps me to see things through his eyes!!
Application: remember that I can do nothing apart from Him
Numbers 6:23-26 The Lord bless you And keep you The Lord make his face shine upon you And be gracious to you The Lord turn his face toward you And give you peace
Man what a great verse that is!!! Peace that surpasses all understanding is amazing. Having the Lord shine through you is what we need to constantly walk in. Gods grace is so beautiful just comprehending how amazing grace really is. I never understood how grace worked I thought I always had to work for grace and I had to earn it. Which striving leads to bondage in some ways or form. And peace is amazing it's better than any drug or anything from this world you can experience. Peace that surpasses all understanding as it says in Isaiah 26:3 is what Jesus offers us!! What a great gift that is along with his mercy and grace that we do not deserve by no means. What a blessing that is. God shows me his grace and mercy everyday.
Application: continue to live in peace and remember His gifts of grace and to not strive anymore for it
Romans 15:7 Accept one another then just as Christ accepted you
Accepting others before Christ was difficult. I always made fun of people I made fun of big people and I hurt a lot of people along the way doing that. I would automatically shut girls off if they didn't look the way I wanted to. I was racist against my own race it was insane I didn't really accept no one except my little inner circle. Even after becoming a Christian I had trouble accepting people. But one day some non believer my uncle kind of convicted me I don't remember his exact words but man he basically said its not cool to make fun of others. From that day on I really watched my mouth and really became aware of making fun of others. As my Christian walk continued I really started to have a heart for people. When I came to Potter's Field I did not like Kids really but the Lord has given me a heart for them. Christ accepted me I should do the same to everyone else.
Application: grow in accepting others and keep a watch on not making fun of others or gossip
Jonah 3 It talks about the Lord coming to Jonah saying go to Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you. How awesome is that that the Lord gave Jonah another chance to obey his command!!! He had a lot of mercy on Jonah he should of been dead after being swallowed by a whale. But the Lord is good. The Lord has been good to me in those kind of ways to make things right giving me a second chance. It's just amazing how awesome God is willing to give someone like us a second chance!! Man and it says the Lord came to Jonah how amazing is that to meet you. Gods meets us!!! He meet us and is with us ALWAYS. And he gave mercy to Nineveh it's cool how God displayed His mercy in that situation He had all the rights to just demolish it and make it never exist but He had mercy on both of them. What a great testimony of mercy that was!!! He reigns forever and ever!
Application: when I mess up don't beat myself up just repent and ask the Lord for grace and mercy and do better next time
Jonah 4 I remember when Pastor Jim came down he talked on a Thursday night talking about this specific chapter. This chapter spoke to me a lot. When God provided a vine to provide shade for Jonah and then the worm ate the vine Jonah got angry to the point of just saying I want to die! How often do we find ourselves getting angry at the little things? I still get upset if I have a bad hair day or if things don't go the way I wanted. What do we have to be angry about? We have the hope of Glory living inside us!!! Every time I found myself getting angry over the next couple days after Pastor Jim spoke about Jonah I remembered how useless it was to get angry over things that won't matter in a 1000 years let another the next minute or so.
Application: when I get made just go back to knowing I have everything I need in Christ hope of Glory,
Matthew 12:39 He answered "a wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah"
A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! Wow...how convicting is that!! 2-3 days ago I was reading an email about this topic. It really spoke to me because I am always asking God for some kind of sign. It's amazing how God spoke to me saying isn't my grace and mercy enough? I was in shock His love is good enough for me I don't have to have Him prove His love to me. He already did that at the cross sending His one and only Son. After that I just realized how amazing His grace was and His mercy!!! It's only been a couple days since letting that sink in but I find myself not looking for signs every time. I'm just learning to be still in the Lords presence and hear His small still voice! He already guides my steps He does everything and without Him I am nothing. John 15:5 you can nothing apart from me!!! This also deepened the thought of just learning to rely on Him for everything that I can't even breathe without Him!!! He sustains me.
Application: stop asking for signs but if I do just remembering that His grace and mercy is beyond good enough!!!!!
Matthew 14:28-30 "Lord if it's you" Peter replied "tell me to come to you on the water" "Come" he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind he was afraid and beginning to sink cried out "Lord, save me"
Peter took a leap of faith to get out of the boat and that was the first step of faith. He had his eyes fixed on Jesus but as soon as he saw the wind he cried out!! Save me Lord!! How many of us can say that they keep there eyes focused on Jesus during the storm? Man I wish I could say that my eyes were fixed on Him all the time during the biggest of storms!!! I had a dream right before I left during my 6 month field time in Guatemala to get home to get treatment on my back. In my dream I saw these big 100 foot waves coming at me they kept knocking me down but I continued to get back up! I felt that if a huge storm was coming in my life. Well I got home had treatment on my 4 messed up disc in my back and then I found out that my mom had cancer and that her work closed down. Then my mind started to go insane I literally thought I was going crazy because all the stuff that happened. I easily got focused on the storm of life and not the One who gives me Life!!! But the Lord definitely showed me things through those trails. Man He is good no matter what!!!! Just have to keep focused on His goodness and keep the faith!!
Application: apply my faith during all parts of my life especially in the storms
Luke 12:4 "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more"
What do we have to afraid of? I've actually been scared of death ever since my last drug experience I had. I was afraid of death and it ate me up. I'm still working on my fears of death but I know the Lord is good and will deliver me!!! I know His perfect love cast out all fears!!! To die is gain and to die is to be with God forever! People can only kill our physical bodies they can't kill my spirit! That means we shouldn't be afraid of men but of the One who determines our eternity!!! Lord give me an eternal prospective!!! The Lord is good no matter what thank you that I don't never ever have to be afraid! Because He lives I live I will die physically one day unless Jesus comes back in my lifetime but I will live spiritually forever! Thank you for my salvation Lord almighty!!!
Application: get over my fear of death with believing in His perfect amazing Love
Luke 12:8-9 "I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men the son of Man will also acknowledge him before the Angels of God. But whoever disowns me before men will be disowned before the Angels of God"
Man makes you think when Peter disowned Jesus 3 times. But I would hate to be in a life or death situation and being asked if I am a follower of Jesus or not and straight up deny him just to save my very very short life. In Job describes how short this life is and that its passing by quick. I am getting to that point where I can say I can die in that situation for the name of Jesus!  I wish I could 100% say I would but Gods working on that part in my life. The fear of death has engulfed me for the last year and a half. But anyways I just don't want to be the guy to deny Christ. He gave me everything and I want to give my life to Him and live this thing out.
Application: get to the point of just dying for the name of Jesus where I can say 100% I would die for Him!!'
Romans 5:3 not only so but we also rejoice in our sufferings because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character, and character hope"
This cannot be more true. The times the Lord has shown me the most is through suffering. Though suffering my faith was boosted the trails made me didn't break me. They got me closer to God and made me rely on Him more. The harder the trail the more grace and mercy He supplied for me to get through it. He is the Way. Trails and suffering definitely develop an increase of faith. My faith Has been boosted. Seeing my mama go through cancer with perfect peace was just amazing. It tells me that we can have perfect peace no matter what we go through!! And hope is amazing a little later in Romans Romans 12:12 to be exact says rejoice in HOPE patient in affliction and faithful in prayer! What a great verse of hope to just keep going! Those trials can either break you or make you. You decide!
Application: apply these verses to my trials and to keep my eyes focused on Him through it all
2 Timothy 2:22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart
When I was trapped in sin one of my leaders I have in my life gave me this verse. Resist the devil and he shall flee. That is truth!! The hard part is resisting the sin. My leader told me that I had to starve my sin and replace it with Gods word!! This verse after the past weeks have helped me resist this sin! Been just remembering parts of that verse every time temptation comes around. It's hard to sin when you really believe that Jesus is here with you. You wouldn't do certain stuff in front of your parents but you can look at it as you wouldn't do that in front of the Lord!!!
Application: remember that the devil flees when I resist it
