So I didn't really think too much about my choice of symbols in this design until recently. All I thought about was being afraid. What do you need? A light. Everyone is afraid of the dark on some level. But now I'm really thinking. We are all lights in some way or another. There's been a lot of extinguishing thoughts lately. Don't be that way. Good neighbors help motorcyclists (warning: distressing) Dramatic footage shows the moment a car ran over two motorcyclists in Myrtle Beach, SC—pinning one of them under the car in the process. Almost immediately, more than a dozen good Samaritans and nearby police officers rushed to the scene to lift the car, allowing the individual to escape. ‘We are lucky to live and work in a community where everyone is ready to work together to help others,’ Myrtle Beach Police wrote in a Facebook post. School shootings are scary—for adults and for children. It’s important to talk about it. Here are some things to say; (1) That news was scary- it makes sense to feel whatever are feeling. These emotions are valid and I am here to listen and work through them with you. (2) There’s a mantra that Dr Dawn Huebner and I discussed on my podcast, How to Talk to Kids about Anything, from her book, Something Bad Happened. “Even though I am afraid doesn’t mean that I am in danger.” 3) We have all heard the beautifully worded concept from Mr. Rogers- that during these tough times, to look for the helpers. In working with kids and helping parents and educators talk to kids about tough topics, one of the things I learned is that kids feel comforted not just by looking for helpers but “how can you be a helper?” Donating time or goods, making a video in support of the affected school, sending a card, raising money, this gives kids a sense of control in the chaos and that can help. As horrendous this experience was, it also showed me that there are good people. Don't get me wrong, there were far more who tried to protect abusive advisor, blame me, chose the easy way out rather than take real steps to help, or just didn't care. Yet, there were people who cared and helped.

Mr. Rogers said to look for the helpers. I got lucky in that the helpers found me. The cohort member who validated my experience and tried to use their priviledge to help in talking the chair. The professor who helped me qualify to graduate. The professor who reassured me I was a good student and not a problem causer. The university director who came and found me when they learned what might be going on.

It would have been easier for each of them to just not get involved, but they didn't take the easy option because they are good people.
