I am literally too tired to enjoy anything and it fucking sucks. like literally every type of Little Treat people give themselves I can't fucking use right now because all I can do is lay on the couch and look pitiful. it is not that high on the list of Fucking Problems but it is definitely not helping because I'm literally unable to take steps to cheer myself up. (other people are also straight incapable of cheering me up. there is nothing that can be done. I just have to fucking Be Sad until I'm physically recovered enough to be less fucking sad.)

On today's "I am SO not normal about Dead Friend Forever": Discussing Catholicism and Colonization in this gay Thai slasher series
Some background on me: I am from a Latine Catholic family. Raised as a non-practicing Catholic (we didn't go to church or pray). Then my parents enrolled me in a Catholic school that I attended from 5th grade to the end of 7th grade. Today, I am not Catholic and have never really considered myself as such.
Ok, so in the flashback episodes of DFF, I have been noticing a lot of things. My findings under the cut.
Let's start with this crucifix and photo of the Virgin Mary and a baby Jesus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Screenshot from ep. 5.
The camera lingers here a bit so we're obviously meant to pay attention to the phrase. I put the screenshot through Google translate's image translator and the translation it gave me was, "Think good, do good, be a good person." I didn't think much of it when I first watched the episode other than it was supposed to establish that the boys attend a Christian or Catholic school.
But then there was this image posted on Be On Cloud's Instagram (also from ep. 5): X
Tumblr media
Zooming in, we can see there's another picture of Mary in the background. Watching the classroom scenes, it's easy to miss because the series itself is more washed out than the official photos posted. But this emphasis on Mary led me to believe the school is a Catholic one. So out of curiosity, I looked up the schools the writers and directors attended because I felt I was onto something here. And boy, was I!
Tumblr media
Source: MDL
Ma-Deaw, if you didn't know, is one of the directors of Dead Friend Forever (he also directed Manner of Death and Inhuman Kiss , and lots of other things).
One Google search later (X) and I learned "Montfort College" is a Catholic school. It started out as a primary school that later added a secondary school as well.
Now let's take a closer look at some of the details of this school:
Tumblr media
First, the school's motto "Labor Conquers All Things". This reminded me of the phone conversation Tee had with his uncle:
Tumblr media
On my first watch, this sounded familiar to me but I couldn't really place why. It wasn't until I saw this other Tumblr post (X) that pointed out it's similar to a bible quote from the New Testament. The quote varies a bit depending on which version of the bible you're using but it's along the lines of, "He who does not work, neither shall he eat".
This is meant to discourage "laziness". Nevermind the fact that people deserve to eat simply because we get hungry and need food to survive. The idea that we only "deserve" things based on productivity is an extremely colonial one. — Reminder also that Tee is being forced into this "work" in the first place. He's just a high school kid. I don't need to like his character to understand how fucked up his situation is.
Then there's the patron of the school. St. Louis de Montfort was a French Catholic priest most known for his study in Mariology. What is Mariology (X)? The study of Mary, the mother of Jesus. I didn't know that was a thing but it's unsurprising considering how prominent images of Mary were in my own religious upbringing. And she's what started me down this rabbit hole in the first place. Mary is a big deal to the Catholics. I'm going to be paying even more attention now if more Mary imagery pops up.
The Garden of Eden and Original Sin
Now I want to draw attention to these images:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Screenshots from ep. 7
Here we have Non and Phee biting into an apple as they leisure around this lush green field. We know they've visited this location more than once because they're wearing different outfits in the screenshots. And I think it's important to note that it's Phee holding the apple and offering it to Non.
Tumblr media
The use of the word "bait" in the bts of ep. 7 is quite interesting too. (X)
The Garden of Eden was the paradise in which Adam and Eve resided. In this garden, there were many trees to eat from. The one tree Adam and Eve were forbidden by God to eat from was the Tree of Knowledge. A serpent (Satan), first tempted Eve into taking from the tree to eat it's fruit. And then Eve gave the fruit to Adam. That is Original Sin. And because Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge, all humans thereafter are born sinful and bad, and can only find salvation through God.
Of course in the scene between Phee and Non, the sin the apple represents is being gay. And it's after this, and after the bracelet scene, that Non becomes involved with Por's film and his tragedy begins.
Tumblr media
Zoomed in screenshot from ep. 5
And I wonder if the bracelet scene is the last time Phee and Non visit this forest location. It would parallel how Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden once they sinned.
Final Thoughts
You give me a story that criticizes Western religion and how it's used as a tool for oppression and colonization, and I'm gonna eat that shit up. I am gonna eat it up. Every. Single. Time.
I really wasn't expecting anything like this from Dead Friend Forever. This level in attention to detail is unmatched. I don't think I've watched a more well planned out show. And no matter where DFF goes from here, these seven episodes will always hold a special place in my heart. 💗

Summer Glow-Up Guide
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summer vacations have started for most people, meaning it's the perfect time to start working on yourself, adopt new habits and improve your health. You guys asked me for a glow-up guide, so here we go! <3
Eating healthier, let's be real; we all know that the first step to a healthy glow a healthy diet is. Try adding some smoothies, proteins (like yogurt, chicken, tofu...), and healthy fats (avocados, nuts...) to your meals.
Skincare. Now is the perfect time to try some new products! My favorite brands are The Ordinary, La Roche Posay, Pixi, Lancome, and Neutrogena.
Meditation, 5-10 minutes in the morning, is enough; it helps you to focus, calm down and be mindful. You can find guided meditation videos on youtube.
New Hairstyle, get a new haircut, and try some new styles! (inspo on my Pinterest)
Journaling, I started journaling not too long ago and love it! It helps me plan my day and get things out of my mind.
Haircare, get a trim, and say bye to your split ends! you can also try some new products; I personally like Lush and Olaplex. (let me know if you want a long hair guide <3)
Practice your make-up skills! Something that helped me improve was practicing right before I shower, so I can just wash it off!
Deep cleaning room, vacuum, clean your windows, empty your trash, and so on...
Get a manicure, I'm personally a long acrylics type of girl, but even if that's not your thing, a simple manicure makes a HUGE difference. Clean nails are a must!!
Drinking more, I probably don't have to tell you that, lol.
Self-tan contour, not having to wear make-up is such a flex so let's just fake that make-up-less beauty by contouring with self-tanner ;)
New outfits that fit, it's time to get some new stuff that makes you feel beautiful and confident!
Exercising and getting toned feels awesome! try some youtube workouts; my favorites are from Daisy Keech, she's so sweet <3
New jewelry, get some cute signature pieces; you can also look for some unique pieces while on vacation and keep them as memories.
Fresh Instagram feed, go and takes some pictures! You can look for inspiration on my Pinterest; I have a board called 'Pictures to recreate' that might be helpful!
Find a signature scent; this is something fun you can do with your friends! Go to Sephora and just try perfumes until you find one that fits you.
Sleep schedule, even though it's tempting to stay up late, now is the perfect time to fix your sleep schedule.
Go out every day, go for a walk, listen to a podcast, take some pictures, you know it...
Read more; it really calms your mind and helps you relax.
Facemasks, I do facemasks at least twice a week
Be nicer
Down below I also listed some 'Challange Days' that you can try when you don't have anything planned and don't want to waste your day!
•┈••✦ Self-care-day ✦••┈•
meditate + exercise
bubble bath
exfoliate

Tumblr media
You accidentally introduced Satoru to the world of Lush when you said you needed to grab a few things at the store, and he normally wouldn't go into a place like this but it quickly became a fun and enlightening experience for him. Seeing all the specialty bath bombs, massage bars, and fresh face masks just screamed 'take me home' so he doesn't hesitate to fill your basket and his until it was overflowing.
The moment you both returned home you knew Satoru wanted to test out some of the new products for himself, so after unloading your shopping bags his excitement got the better of him when he hears the water running. He's adorably peeking his head inside the bathroom to see you perched on the edge of the bathtub. "Babe? Why didn't you invite me for a bath with you~?" You offer him a sweet smile, "Because I knew you'd come find me sooner or later. I need to get a few things so can you finish drawing the bath for me?"
A small nod from him and a gentle kiss to his cheek from you, Satoru does as he's told meanwhile going through his massive haul to line up the products across the bath tray he's most excited to use. When you return back with two drinks in your hands 一 a deep cherry gradient over ice, sugar coating on the outside, garnished with a mint sprig, you find your boyfriend had changed into a white robe. "This is the best I can do for now, but we have hibiscus mocktails!" You chime delightfully, and Satoru swears he just fell in love with you a little more.
He gets a little cheeky when he helps you undress to rinse your bodies first under the shower before dipping into the color changing and fragrant water, and even though he's been to hot spring resorts before this feels like an entirely different kind of comfort and relaxation. You notice he had chosen a face mask he wanted to do so before entering you grabbed your bunny headband for him. As you both soak together and enjoy each other's company, you can look forward to Satoru making plans to bathe with you again.

i feel like pretty girl is such a lush girlie, and when she goes over to Harry’s house for the first time after soaking in her glittery bath, he is just ALL over her because her skin is sparkly and she smells so good and when he learns it’s because of her bath products, he ofc wants to buy her all of the bath bombs and bubble bars she wants, for his sake, and she thinks it’s just because he loves spoiling her (which we know is true anyway) but there’s just nothing better than having her fresh out of the bath with warm and soft skin, smelling like whatever she chose to throw into the water, and he just gets so cuddly and clingy every time and he secretly loves when he wakes up in the morning to see tiny specks of sparkles on his arms or on his chest and her scent lingers even more in his sheets, and whenever she gets something new that he just loves, he’s like a puppy just nosing at her neck while they lay on the sofa in their pjs, barely letting go of her for anything, stroking his fingers over her thighs and her arms and pushing up her shirt to rest his cheek on her warm tummy, and she knows that she’ll be gravitating towards that scent from now because it’s her new favourite :) - 🍓
NOOOOOOO I LOVE THIS SO BAD:( bc thats so true she is very much a lush girlie I love the idea of her taking baths at her house or his and theres all these glittery bubble bars or bath bombs and she smells so sweet and theres flower petals left behind sometimes and h just loves them:( they smell so sweet ofc and they make her skin so soft but he loves how much she loves it and makes a special night of it :( but im so obsessed w the idea of him finding extra glitters in his bed or on his chest and stuff like its just so sweet AND HIM PUSHING HER SHIRT UP AND PUTTING HIS HEAD ON HER TUMMY ALL SOFT AND GLITTERY AND SWEET SMELLING LIKE IM SO DOWN BAD FOR THAT ITS SO CUTE :(((((((

Do you have the werlyt screenshots? 👀
This is only because I love you, Nonny.
I also took time to transcribe these under the "Keep Reading" cut, cuz this is a lot of text and cannot always be read clearly. These images were taken with my tablet. Errors in said transcript are probably just mine. These are pages 120-121 and 169-170 of Encyclopedia Eorzea volume III. The timeline's a little weird (especially the Gaius to Valens handover), but Werlyt was an Imperial province for over 50 years.
There's also pages specifically about the Weapon project and how the Garleans tried to have a system similar to soul crystals in legatus armor, but they were behind the curve on such magic-technology and so the data's incomplete (as we saw in those fights). If there's interest, I may do a follow up with those pages, but this is long enough and I have FC things to do tonight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Werlyt
Following in the footsteps of its neighbor across the Ghimlyt Dark, Ala Mhigo, this small nation in the far western reaches of Ilsabard recently liberated itself from the Garlean Empire.
Flag: The flag originally bore the crest of the royal family. However, as their bloodline has long since run dry, and the nation now aspires to become a republic, the interim government has organized a committee to decide on a new design.
Motto: --
Government: Werlyt is presently led by an interim government. After careful deliberation, it has decided the nation will be rebuilt as a republic.
Leader: Talbot Hunte
Ruling Body: The interim government is formed of representatives from several rebel factions that fought against the Garlean Empire.
Racial Distribution:
Ilsabardian Hyur: 80%
Near Eastern Au Ra: 15%
Other: 5%
Religion: Though religion was largely discouraged under Garlean rule, the people of Werlyt were polytheistic, believing in thirteen gods. Their religious practices are said to be largely influenced by the traditions of their western neighbors in Eorzea and its teachings of the Twelve, as well as Corvosi mythology from the east.
Industry:
Livestock: The tending of cattle is a longstanding profession of Werlyt, made possible by its lush, far-reaching pastures. A knack for livestock breeding is evidenced by the myriad varieties of both beef and dairy cattle they raise, the latter including an especially rare breed said to number only one hundred.
Dairy: In tandem with their livestock industry, the people of Werlyt excel in the production of dairy products, including butter, yogurt, and milk-based beverages. They are well known for their high-quality cheeses, which became a mainstay export to Garlemald.
Fishing: The southern edge of Werlyt touches the sea, allowing for a bustling fishing trade in coastal towns. Its many steep cliffs, however, ensure their efforts are focused on but a few major ports.
Mining: In the northern mountain range of Werlyt, one can find four mines wherein copper, zinc, tungsten, and several other rare metals are extracted. The process was refined under Garlean rule with the introduction of magitek, and while the equipment remains, the country wants for the ceruleum to operate it. To that end, Werlyt has begin negotiations with Ul'dah to barter for fuel so they may resume their mining operations.
Beliefs: While the Au Ra who migrated from the Corvos region have ostensibly been welcomed in Werlyt, there yet remains a strong sense of social incohesion in this predominantly Hyuran nation. It remains to be seen if these disparate peoples can overcome their differences to flourish in this burgeoning republic.
Diet: Werlyt is perhaps best known for its stewed dishes made using local beef, dairy, and seafood. The intermingling of native wheat-based cuisines and rice dishes brought by the Au Ra also help distinguish Werlyt cooking. Dairy enthusiasts insist that milk produced in Werlyt is indispensable to strengthening one's muscles when training the body, and it is thought to be high in protein and effective in reducing muscle inflammation.
History
A Contentious Foundation
In ages past, the western reaches of Ilsabard, known today as Werlyt, were home to myriad Hyuran tribes. There was no harmony to be found between them, however--the ceaseless cycle of war and peace was no different than the changing of the seasons. Some brave few tribes thought to flee from this war-torn land, crossing the Ghimlyt Dark to pillage and plunder on Eorzean soil. They would inevitably return home, richer for their efforts, but these ventures westward would come to a halt when the leadership of Anshelm Cotter united Gyr Abania, Ala Mhigo becoming a shield from further incursion.
With dreams of pushing farther west dashed, and the Hyuran tribes growing weary of conflict, Au Ra outlanders hailing from Corvos saw this pall of languor as an opportunity. They formed an alliance with a handful of local tribes, and together they quickly subjugated the territories that would come to be Werlyt. Despite their pivotal role in its formation, however, the Au Ra would not seek the throne of this fledgling kingdom, knowing their alchemical knowledge and mastery of the mystic arts would prove no match for the sheer numbers of their Hyuran allies. Thus did they concede kingship to the Hyuran elders. With this, some Hyurs came to see the Au Ra as powerful allies, but others would continue to cruse them as ruthless invaders.
The Garlean Occupation
Unfortunately, the newly founded nation of Werlyt would not last. The advent of magitek and transformed Garlemald into a heretofore unseen military power, allowing them to take Corvos with ease and subsequently draw Werlyt under the Garlean yoke.
The province was charged with supplying foodstuffs and mineral resources to fuel the burgeoning empire, and in some ways the dissemination of magitek would prove a boon. The mechanization of mining, for example, was momentous, but any such innovations as the Garleans would bring ever remained beyond the reach of the subjugated. For thirty years the people of Werlyt toiled thus, but they would eventually be offered a glimmer of hope. The Empire had begin the second phase of its incursion into the Far Eastern territories, a campaign requiring a considerable portion of their military force. Even the occupying force in Werlyt had been greatly diminished, affording rebel factions the leverage needed to reclaim their home.
Their dreams of freedom were fleeting, however, as a young Gaius van Baelsar led imperial forces back to assault the capital of Werlyt and restore Garlean order. As the previous viceroy had been killed by the rebels, Gaius would assume command of the newly reclaimed province.
Two Sides of Governance
Reflecting on the plight of the Werlytian peoples that drove them to rebellion, Gaius, the newly appointed viceroy, well knew that drastic measures were needed to prevent a second uprising. He began by recruiting individuals he deemed competent and capable, paying no heed to their station, race, or place of origin. Indeed, no few Werlytians were sought out for their extensive knowledge of the land, serving in various bureaucratic positions. Over the next twenty years, Gaius would also oversee a more even distribution of the province's wealth; new infrastructure in the form of roads, ports, and harbors; an a compulsory education system that would substantially increase literacy rates throughout Werlyt. But the peace and order he established there was short-lived.
The invasion of Eorzea and its consequences, naturally, left van Baelsar unable to fulfill his duties in Werlyt. The man who would take his place was Valens van Varro, an otherwise unremarkable civilian who had somehow risen through the military ranks. After losing his position amidst political turmoil in the Empire, he was given command of a newly reformed VIIth Imperial Legion. The grim shadow he cast over Werlyt would undo all the good Gaius had achieved and so much worse. Forced labor, imprisonment, and executions quickly became normalcies of day-to-day living. So much so, that it was said one could only find rest under the mortician's roof.
The Treasonous Five
Rather than subjugate the enemy, Valens was satisfied with bleeding both their resources and people dry--a tyrannical approach to governance often said to be heinous even by his fellow countrymen. It was a path that would lead to ruin for the province of Werlyt. Yet despite appearances, he was an exceedingly brilliant engineer, and there was a method to his madness.
Emperor Varis had been assassinated, and as various parties vied for the throne, Garlmald's aristocracy was in the throes of chaos. That is why Valens labored to complete his Weapons project, that he might make a triumphant return to Garlemald, wielding the ultimate tool of war. He well understood the need for urgency, and was more than willing to bring ruin upon Werlyt if it meant assuring his place as emperor.
For all his genius, however, Valens remained ignorant of his coming downfall until it was too late. The orphans he intended to use as test pilots for his project were plotting to use his Weapons against him, and the fruition of their plan would bring the VIIth Legion to its knees. One must not overlook, of course, the significance of Gaius's contributions to their efforts, as well as the rebel factions that also conspired to overthrow the Garleans. Even so, it was ultimately the bravery and sacrifice of five orphans that would spell the end of Valens, and earn Welryt her freedom.
Faces of Werlyt
GAIUS BAELSAR
"I see now that true strength is not granted by others, but resides within us. Strength of character, of spirit, of resolve."
With his defeat at the hands of the Warrior of Light in Castrum Meridianum, this former legatus of the XIVth Legion realized that he had long been a mere pawn in the Ascians' plans. He swore revenge against them for his fallen comrades, taking up the mantle of Shadowhunter, and though his quest for vengeance would claim the masks of Altima and Deudalaphon, the hunt for Ascians was quickly set aside when he learned of the Empire's plans to produce the noxious weapon Black Rose.
En route to Garlemald, Gaius crossed paths with Alphinaud, forming an alliance to halt production of the deadly gas--and this was not his only unexpected encounter with the Scions. As he infiltrated the capital, Gaius chanced to meet Estinien, and together they breached the imperial palace. There, they witnessed the assassination of Emperor Varis at the hands of Zenos. The rogue prince swiftly departed, and not moments later, imperial guards found Gaius standing over the late emperor's corpse.
His relationship with his home nation soured further when he discovered the previously abandoned Weapon project had been revived by the reformed VIIth Legion, who planned to deploy their prototypes in an assault on Eorzea. Gaius set off for Ghimlyt, hoping to warn the Eorzean Alliance before it was too late. There he found the Warrior of Light at the ready--this time, to stand with him against their common for. In a tragic twist, the orphans Gaius once fostered would also be caught up in the conflict.
Now, at the age of fifty-six and with Werlyt freed from the imperial yoke, Gaius has joined hands with its interim government in efforts to restore the region.
VALENS VAN VARRO
"As they say, 'to err is human, to forgive, divine.' And you know how forgiving I can be. When it suits me..."
Legatus of the reformed VIIth Legion, Valens joined the army following the completion of his studies at the Magitek Academy. Known for his ruthless and innovative magitek-based battle tactics, it seemed nothing could stop his ascension through the ranks. Those who served under him, however, knew well his unethical practices and penchant for sacrificing allies to serve his ambitions. Moreover, despite his achievements, he never escaped the shadow of Gaius, who was ultimately chosen to command the XIVth Legion. Believing the position stolen from him, Valens developed a deep hatred for the legatus even as he toiled to recreate Ultima Weapon under Nero's direction. This selfsame spite is what inspired him to later resume work on the Weapon project, believing that, by succeeding where Gaius had previously failed, he might at last prove himself the superior military officer.
Valens has ever been a staunch believer in Garlean supremacy. This was made all too apparent by his heinous decision to use villagers from the provinces as test subjects, believing them to be expendable. In the wake of the Emperor's death, he had hoped to take advantage of the chaos in Garlemald to assume the throne, but his dreams of grandeur would remain unfulfilled. The Weapon pilots, whom he had treated with such disdain, rebelled and eventually proved his undoing. After losing in a duel against Gaius, the fifty-six-year-old Valens met his demise at the hands of the Diamond Weapon.
SEVERA SOUTHER
"All that hatred, festering away...Nothing good could ever come of it."
Daughter to a citizen of Werlyt and a Garlean soldier, Severa joined the army in the hopes of deterring those who would cast scorn on her family. Even as she served, however, the Garleans denied Severa's mother the medicine she needed to maintain her faltering health. Though Severa deserted in the wake of the XIIth Legion's defeat in Ala Mhigo, she returned to Werlyt too late to save her mother and could do little but flee once more, eventually finding herself in the company of Gaius. Now twenty-three, she can often be found offering counsel to young Allie.
VALDEAULIN GANATHAIN
"It's taken me a long time--too long--but I've finally found a reason to live for the present. For the future."
Until Ala Mhigo fell to the Empire, Valdeaulin had made his home in the Black Shroud. As the Garleans continued their expansion, he lost not only his village, but his wife and daughter as well--his family abducted as test subjects for the fatal gas known as Black Rose. He later joined the Order of the Twin Adder, intent on exacting vengeance agains the invaders. The forty-eight-year-old Duskwight would have his chance amidst the ruin of the Praetorium, where he found a wounded Gaius on the verge of death, but ultimately chose to spare the Black Wolf and aid him in his hunt for Ascians.
ALFONSE AAN BAELSAR
"If it is the duty of the strong to lead the weak, we will become strong and protect those who cannot protect themselves."
An epidemic claimed the life of Alfonse's parents when he was still a child, leaving him and his sister Allie living on the streets of Werlyt. The two were adopted by Gaius, and Alfonse soon became an elder brother to all of the children in the Black Wolf's care. Wishing to be of greater help to their adoptive father, the Auri siblings joined the military, serving in the XIVth Legion/ During Operation Archon, they remained in Werlyt on a supply mission, but were soon transferred to the VIIth Legion, where they were coerced into becoming pilots for the Weapon project. Faced with a dire situation, they plotted to take advantage of their position and use the Weapons against the Garleans to liberate Werlyt. Although inextricably fused with the core of the Diamond Weapon, Alfonse managed to kill Valens and secure a future for his home and sister both. He was twenty-one summers old at the time of his death.
ALLIE AAN BAELSAR
"The days we spent together were the happiest of my life, and no matter what happens, nothing can take that away from me."
Allie and her brother were adopted by Gaius and given the surname Baelsar. When they were reassigned to the Legion, the name caught Valens's eye, and he wasted no time in selecting them as candidates for the Weapon project.
The youngest of her foster siblings, Allie was dearly loved by them all. She wanted nothing more than to have their portrait painted together as a family, but it was not meant to be, as she alone would survive the Weapon project. Despite having experienced so much loss by the age of sixteen summers, Allie works dauntlessly at Gaius's side to realize her siblings' dream of a free and flourishing Werlyt.
REX AAN BAELSAR
"This is our way of upholding the ideals Father instilled in us. Our lives are a small price to pay for Werlyt's freedom."
Though he too was tragically orphaned, Rex's cheery disposition always brightened the spirits of his foster siblings. He cared deeply for his adoptive family, and would do anything to shield them from harm, even should it mean defying his superiors. He placed complete faith in his brother Alfonse, whom he held in particularly high regard, seeing the elder brother's dreams as his own. Tragically, the eighteen-year-old's life was cut short when he took the helm of the Emerald Weapon, his essence overwritten with combat data modeling his beloved father Gaius as he merged with the machine's core.
RICON AAN BAELSAR
"You all made me happier than I had any right to be. And now...I've finally found my purpose. I have no regrets."
Though timid by nature, Ricon would not hesitate to lay down his life to save his adopted siblings. Upon joining the XIVth Legion, his skilled hands earned him a place working under Nero to hone his skills as an engineer, and the wealth of knowledge he gained from his training was readily applied to the Weapon project once he was permitted to assist with maintenance. Although determined to help correct the mistakes of past prototypes, he well knew they lacked time to fully prepare the Sapphire Weapon. This did Ricon elect to pilot the Weapon in place of his brother Rex, and the life of another brave youth was snuffed out by the Oversoul system. He was seventeen years of age.
MILISANDIA AAN BAELSAR
"Father still needs you. Please take care of him...in our place."
One of several orphans taken in by Gaius, Milisandia had hair of crimson, though it was not always so kissed by fire. When they still lived in an orphanage, the young lady believed that Alfonse was enamored with one of the institution's matrons and, perhaps hoping to win his attention, dyed her hair the same color as the woman who captivated him. This youthful infatuation would remain unspoken unto her dying day, when she passed away aboard the Ruby Weapon at the age of only twenty summers.
AVILINA AAN HORNE
"There's a way I can make a difference. I know there is."
Ten years ago, Ternclif-born Avilina was conscripted to serve as a magitek engineer in the XIVth Legion. These she met Milisandia, and the two became close friends. After the XIVth's defeat at Castrum Meridianum, she fled back to Werlyt, but with her experience working on the Ultima Weapon, it was inevitable that she would be assigned to the Weapon project with the VIIth Legion. Though the liberation of Werlyt granted her her freedom, she still carries the guilt of having assisted with the Weapon project, knowing that it claimed the life of her one true friend.

Promise is lush and unhurried, reclining somewhere between jazz, Brazilian pop, and soul. The album's title was inspired by a letter that Adu received from her father, in which he wrote about the "promise of hope," a reference to a source of strength he found during his battle with cancer.
Multiple articles and reviews from the time of release leaned on the same descriptor for the singer, the band, and the music: "cool." It's mood music, at the purest definition: Stuart Matthewman's sax, Andrew Hale's keys, and Paul Spencer Denman's masterful bass envelope listeners, transport them. Their live recordings were a departure from the heavily programmed production of the era, and the sparse elegance that some found - and still find - too loungy is one of the primary factors in Sade's sound and catalog aging beautifully.
Promise's opener, "Is It a Crime," is Sweetback's (the name Matthewman, Hale, and Denman perform under as a trio) showcase. This is a definitive Sade song, with Hammond organs and djembes and Adu pleading over big-band style crescendos. She describes her love as one that "dives and jumps and ripples like the deepest ocean," and that's what the song does, waves of sax and piano cresting and breaking over Adu's insistent declaration of love.
While Sade's music is often categorized as relaxing or sensual, the smoothness of her vocals and the mellow instrumentation belies the melancholy in most of the album cuts. Lyrically, Promise is a collection of short stories exploring the varied stages of love and relationships; some autobiographical to Adu, who co-wrote every song on the album but one.
"War of the Hearts" frames the end of a relationship as a standoff; Jezebel is the deceptively simple story of a prostitute, told in innuendos, "Jezebel, what a belle/Looks like a princess in her new dress/How did you get that?/Do you really want to know? she said," and Maureen is about a friend she lost and all the new experiences she'll never get to tell her about.

There's a softness to the air.
It feels… complicated yet all the same simple and easy and freeing. A slight breeze; a tickle just on the apples of cheeks that are misted by the cool air of an early spring morning. It floats under the minds of everyone who awaken by the light, but those who swim in the darkest of hours find comfort that when the sun rises, there is a belief that for one aching moment, everything is alright is ever so peaceful.
He didn't feel as poetic as he should have.
The grass was cold. A light misting of dew had settled as the evening had folded in on itself, disappearing from thoughts as tired eyes closed and bodies molded. The fingers that skirted the very blades were painted with its water–a strange sensation when the mind is nearly numb.
Lover's Lake was beautiful. Hidden, in many ways.
Hidden beyond a swell of lush trees and bushes, homes that had been built by families' decades ago and rested overlooking a reflecting pool of pure, unbridled nature.
He believed just by stepping foot onto its land meant it was losing its beauty. A swirl of smoke lifted into the air as he breathed out. The pungent smell of a new batch filing the space.
Eddie Munson was at war with himself.
At war with what kind of man he wanted to be and the type people thought he was. Nothing he ever did made enough sense for the residents of Hawkins to think 'this kid isn't as bad as we think' or 'maybe what he likes isn't so… devious.' But he didn't pander to them, ever. What they wanted and expected wasn't him. It never would be.
And there was scarcely a soul who would accept him for him.
But at Lover's Lake, the early dawn did. Even if it didn't always feel like it.
It didn't care that he liked a mysterious, supposedly satanic game; that heavy metal is what melted his goddamn soul or that he took part in some unsavory activities just to bide the time—it was only a bonus when there was an uplifting element to its products. It didn't care that parts of him were broken, like fragments of glass waiting to be glued back together but when artificial tape was applied, it fell apart just as quickly as it was healed.
So he took another hit with let it out with a sigh, rubbing a hand over his tired eyes, musing his hair that had barely seen a comb in twenty-four hours.
There was something here… right before dawn broke the horizon and stroked the dark skies with its pinks, oranges, and yellows, that Eddie felt a cacophony of emotions surge within him. Wallowing in self-pity, he believed, was nothing short of self-destruction but he did it anyway.
Feeling like the world was unsteady, unforgiving when it came to him even if he had never done anything truly wrong.
That's why, in moments where happiness and truth begin to outshine the darkness, doubt becomes prominent. It comes in like a tidal wave, building and growing as the time begins to tick away at what is good; the crescendo only comes when the sky breaks. Like a spotlight it begins to expand.
Fully forming a stage of his life as the trees begin to cascade with colors and then the dock below. Suddenly gleaming on the bumper of his shitty van that he wouldn't trade for the world and slowly inching toward the open doors on the back.
He put out the joint on the dewy grass and let his mind go blank.
Tumblr media
There was a softness to the metal.
Like it could wrap around you and hold you still, comforting in an unnatural embrace. It made it so easy to fall asleep.
There was a hum from the crickets and the nocturnal beings that had kept you up, listening to them speak and call and prey amidst the forest just on the edge of Lover's Lake and if you were listening close enough, steady breaths were just as abating. The blanket itself was coarse. The yarn coming undone with every visit, its flowering fabric a statement for its use, for what it covers up as the moon rests high in the night sky.
And even as the doors remained open, the temple of a beat up van had brought a solace. Easing concerns about everyone, everything, but never faltering in its unlikely embrace. Deep inside its nuts and bolts, down to the tires that need to be filled, it set ablaze the forest.
Every Friday.
Every Friday it set this little patch of land just behind a small diving dock on fire.
In its wake it smoldered and confounded two people who wanted nothing more than the sheer happiness their secrets could afford them. Two chariots racing, running to a finish line that was being pushed further and further away as the elements around it tried to peak underneath its dark curtain for all its tales.
It’s a deal that was made—no whispers, no gazes, just these small moments in the woods. These moments lost in between space and time simply waiting to reveal themselves but cannot. The forces of nature binding two worlds as parallel lines forbidden to meet only to become complicated when they do.
A good girl, a bad boy. It sounded so cliché when you thought about it.
But when it happened, it felt as though two seas collided. There was no turning back from this.
You could see the moon shining on the lake as your head spun with thoughts. These late nights, the early morning rises that followed a routine that wasn’t certain although it had become conventional, ordinary when it shouldn’t have been. There was a slight breeze whistling through the trees; the fringe on the blanket exposed to the night air lightly blew upwards and trickled into the van.
The breeze, however, could not stop the ceaseless voices that filled your mind.
What if they called the Wheeler’s and Nancy wasn’t even home?
What if they could smell the weed and cigarettes on your clothes as you walked through the door as they made breakfast?
How would they forgive you if they had known you went against their rules?
It was always them. Your parents, friends, others who thought one thing of you while your mind and heart raced in the opposite direction. As the year quickly made its way to its close and you would walk across the stage with a diploma in hand, would he? Another year and what would that leave you?
This… it wasn’t easy, whatever this was.
And those curious thoughts always loomed when night had fallen and no delicate eyes nor smile could save you from them. They always won.
When you laid back against the metal of the van only covered with what he could spare, you looked over. Peaceful and content. There were no lines of concern taut on his face, no anger at the world in his eyes.
He was good. Kind.
Soft hearted and quiet when the time came.
He wasn’t bad. He wasn’t evil.
There was a tightness in your chest when you thought about it—truly thought about it. Just looking at him as nothing but a dim moonlight glided in from the window on his left, the wide open doors by your feet, and seeing nothing but him. Pure, unadulterated him.
You would fall asleep next to him a million times if it meant that you were content.
And you were.
That was the frightening part.
The kind that made you turn on your side, away from him, and let a tear slip out of your eye only to run along the bridge of your nose and onto the blanket.
Feeling this way… it was scary.
Tumblr media
The sun barely had traced the edges of the trees by the time Eddie had made it to the van. His shoes were misted with the dew, he could hear the birds begin to chirp at the sound of an unbroken dawn. When he approached the bumper, there was not even a stir at the sound.
Perhaps you had gotten more use to the simple sounds of nature compared to him.
For a moment, he hovered; watching in only a way he could.
You slept as he had left you—curled into yourself like a cocoon wrapped in a yellow blanket he had stolen off the back of Wayne’s sofa three months back. His uncle had never even questioned it when they took the van to have it serviced and he saw it in the back.
Eddie wanted it to be that way. The kind where no one questioned the choices either of you made but people were cruel and he knew that better than you, better than most. He wished he didn’t have to twist his rings in concern over the way he felt people would perceive you if they had known.
But he couldn’t get himself to stop. It was addictive, this fine line. He couldn’t shake it.
The way you slept soundly made him regret his path of thinking. What he wanted you to see over the deep slumber the bewitching morning had granted you; the choice he had lumbered to was stuck in his mind—the words he wanted to say but couldn’t always formulate them correctly out of sheer uncertainty that somewhere along the fine line he had taken a misstep. Maybe the sunrise would give him the courage today.
Eddie Munson believed he was no hero—but heroes didn’t need to be the only ones with courage to pave their way in life.
So he bottled that and conserved what it could before it started leaking out like a sieve.
He reached out gently, resting one of his ringed hands on your leg and shook you awake. Your head moved slightly under the blanket, tussling the fabric away from your face. You didn’t even look at him before rubbing your hands over your eyes to wake up.
“Hm?” Your hum was quiet, laced with sleep and deeper than it normally was. He thought it was attractive—these brief moments where any insecurity was brushed aside for the sake of recognizing the world once more.
Instead of responding, he just gently shook your leg a little more. Eddie roused you from your sleep without saying so much as a word, but his comforting hand never strayed. His hand stroking the area softly as you sat up, the blanket falling and the sweatshirt you had stowed away in his vehicle became an unwelcome reminder of uncertainty.
Yale.
In bright white lettering.
You sat up, resting your arms behind you and looked at Eddie with a concerned yet composed demeanor.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, nothing,” he nearly hushed as he removed his hand and held it out to you, “I want to show you something.”
“It’s still dark out.”
Although there was no other people in the vicinity, you both were whispering. Eddie nodded his head, flexing out his hand for you to take.
“I know,” he agreed, “bring the blanket. Come on.”
There was very little to question. Your eyes were still tired and the thought of trying to decipher words that barely contained a clue would have been taxing. It was early Saturday morning and when the timer on his watch went off, the reverie of what had been would have to wait another day. There wasn’t time to waste.
You took his hand and it was cold—meaning he had been outside of that metal shelter for longer than he probably should have been. He guided you out of the van, wrapping the blanket around your shoulders, pretending to tuck it into you as the ends met around your chest.
You couldn’t suppress the smile of his movements.
“Give me your hands,” you spoke quietly in the same manner as before but pulled your hands out from underneath the blanket as you both stood just beyond the van.
“Why?”
“Just give them to me.”
He held them out, palms up and you carefully scooped them together with your own, bringing them to touch but not intertwined and to your lips. He watched with concentrated eyes the way his fingertips barely grazed the skin of your plump lips.
You let a warm breath pass onto them. Then another. And another before holding them tightly with your own.
“Your hands are cold.”
Eddie didn’t say anything. He let you hold them for a few seconds before leading you to the edge of the grass where the dock began. The colors of the sunrise had just begun to emerge beyond the tree line and it painted the edges of the pine and oak and slim branches with carefully guided strokes.
“Here,” and he brought you to the edge, where a rickety old lawn chair had been left to die amongst the wilderness and sat through the seasons as they changed. Winter, into spring, and just as the seasons began to mix from spring into summer, the chair remained. Eddie let go of your hand to reposition the chair to face outward toward the water.
You had even noticed the sun had begun to rise.
“Sit down here,” he pointed toward the end of the chair so you obliged, watching as he shuffled out of his white reeboks and sat against the chair behind you. It didn’t take any coaxing for you to fall back against him and let him wrap his arms around you.
Your head fell against his shoulder; letting him rest his own just at the crook of your neck as your head tilted off to the side. You rested your hands on his arms, feeling the leather of his jacket cool your fingertips.
It was in these moments where you felt perfectly content. He was quiet then; the existential need for attention quelled as he relished in the minutes he had holding you molded into his own body.
"Did you know," He began in a inhibited voice, you could smell the trace of weed on him; a mixture of worn cologne and a recent smoke, "that right over there," Eddie took one of his hands and extended it in front of you, eastward, "the sun peaks right between those two trees."
You could see where his finger was pointing. Near the center of the forest across from you, two trees paralleled one another at near equal heights yet the ones between them were short. It framed colors of orange and pink.
"Every day, every Saturday, the same spot."
"Kind of like us, huh?" You leaned your head towards him, watching as the colors began to shine through. He turned his own head, letting his lips fall onto your forehead. You could feel his steady breaths behind you.
There was a lingering feeling as you both sat there, viewing the dawn. A stagnant air circling and encasing the 'what if' or 'what now' as the weeks began to dwindle. There were five blank spaces on the calendar in your bedroom–five days until spring break began and the months that followed would only be a sprint to the stage. The give and take to have a conversation that transcended whatever this was had been plagued by the hardships that may unveil when the truth of one person's intentions are made clear.
"Kind of like us," Eddie repeated, his warm breath brushing the skin of your face and his arms around you tightened in the slightest.
It was painless, being in his arms like this.
But it was painful remembering the world that existed beyond this small spot.
"Eddie…" He would never tire from hearing his name fall from your lips. There was something, however, that made him resort to the feelings that had been spreading earlier that morning.
He couldn't have known you thought the same in the moonlight.
"Yeah?" He responded, not sure if he wanted the morning to go like this. But there was a comfort in the way neither of you broke away; linked together, bound in the ease of daybreak and the amiability of yearning.
"What are we going to do?"
You had to say it. You did. And he didn't know how to reply, so he didn't. You let go of his arms, your own falling outside of the blanket and on the outside of his legs, resting your elbows on his bent knees as the silence passed.
Eddie always wore a version of ripped jeans. It had become something of a signature style for him and your fingers traced the rips, the fabric fraying and ready to tear again with the right amount of pressure. He turned his head into yours, resting his forehead at the top of your head above your left ear. It was the heavy sigh emitted from his chest. You imagined he closed his eyes just for a second before finding the words to speak.
He couldn't.
"I want you to graduate," you whispered in an attempt to sound more hopeful and confident than you were, "I don't want you to end up like…" the obvious trail that led straight to his core.
You didn't want him to end up like his parents. Hell, he didn't either but he had been fostered in the cycle of carelessness for so long that the likelihood that he would continue to fail and end up at a horrible job was increasing. Not every rock star made it.
Eddie took no offense to you for wanting the best for him. It's what any normal person would have wanted for their… other… but he hadn't been privy to it before you had shot an arrow through the center of his heart.
As you had believed, his eyes had been closed. Breathing steady and unwavering as your thoughts spilled just as the sun began to break the tree line. Strokes of a rainbow of colors spread above and reflected on the lake below. Instead of agreeing with you or pushing back, Eddie thought of all the scenarios that had plagued his own mind as the clock began to tick toward graduation.
"Would," he cleared his throat, not letting you go, "would I be holding you back?"
Eddie felt the air change. Maybe it was you, the slight stiffness in your body at his suggestion. It hadn't happened many times where he could tell the trajectory of a specific comment would shift the palpable air but he could feel it here. So close to you and knowing that these thoughts must have invaded your own mind too.
"Holding me back?"
"Yeah, you know," Eddie shifted slightly, his arms loosening as one of his legs laid flat against the lounge chair and the other remained bent. His eyes cast away toward the water and focused on the morning. The admittance wasn't something he could look you in the eye for, "that maybe I'd be… preventing you from… other things."
Eddie always claimed he wasn't smart, but when he coded words so eloquently wrapped in a self-conscious fear of what it meant to be devoted to someone more than he was to his own self, he was brilliant. You had always seen that in him when he didn't see it in himself.
And it did not take a genius to uncover his implications. By remaining committed hundreds of miles away, Eddie was scared he wasn't enough. If he didn't graduate, what would he do? If he couldn't find a steady job or a path for his future, what would he do and what would that leave you to do? He could already see you in the prestigious buildings of Yale laughing with trust-fund babies and jocks that sat a little too close.
Would he hold you back from finding something better? Someone who could provide for you and support you as much as you did them?
"Do you think you're holding me back from something?"
"I don't know," It was an honest answer, you weren't upset.
"Eddie?"
"Mhm?" The sound reverberated through his chest. You knew he was chewing on his lip anxiously. He couldn't give himself away by wringing his fingers or pacing. He could have really used a cigarette.
"Why do you think that?"
There were always going to be doubts that infiltrated your mind when the basis of your relationship was unknown to others. Yet, there was a constant.
The giddiness in your bones when you woke on Friday mornings, the emptiness that you felt when the week passed by so slowly and only a brief twenty minutes at lunch let you sneak a look or two without someone holding your attention. It never hurt because what had grown between you should never hurt–for anyone, especially not people trying to make good.
But there was a sting when he believed he wasn't good enough. What made you the prize? What was so great about you that a man good and compassionate feels less than because of the potential of your future?
So you asked, "why do you think that?"
Eddie shook his head. The light shimmy of his hair tickling the skin that it met at the back of your neck and just behind your ear. He was still looking beyond.
"I-" the silent hesitation began again, his eyes looking up to the sky where they emulated the colors that cascaded in his sparkling brown hue.
"I don't think you'll hold me back from anything, no," you replied instead. Eddie felt one of your hands meet his own, tracing the lines of his veins and to the silver of his rings. Your fingertips were soft.
"I want you to have everything you've ever wanted," Eddie had settled on as your confession rang through his brain. It felt funny having this conversation when you were both barely able to call yourselves adults, though it felt like the most important decision you'd ever make—if this thing was worth it or had it been a waste of six months of disingenuous behavior.
This kind of interdimensional fleeting feeling that was slipping from your palms like water.
"It's all here."
Here, at Lover's Lake. Everything you wanted.
"You will always occupy a piece of me," as your body was slumped into his, you looked up, trying to get his attention to see your truth. This was you. Not some dream of your parents that called you away to New Haven or the accomplishments of the people who surrounded you that meant somehow you belonged to that group of people.
Your person had been split into two the moment Eddie Munson held the door out for you when you were running late to class in early November. The choices you made to commit to that had distorted your own sense of want, need, and the future you had become uncertain about because not only had you wanted it to include him, you wanted it to be something that could be settled into with content.
You wanted to be content and you were with him, just wavering when the future was so close.
"I miss you when I shouldn't; thinking that maybe you're thinking of me when I do you… every day I wake up and hope it's the last day of the week just so I can see you, be with you… and sometimes I think it’s ridiculous but I imagine this is the feeling that authors write of. The kind that the girls in my class swoon over—Jay seeing Daisy again, Juliet’s speech to Romeo.”
Eddie had never had someone commit themselves to him. To want to be with him for more than a brief moment in time where nothing mattered, but times where everything came into focus and the spotlight shined like diamonds.
"You're not going to hold me back…"
He still wasn't looking and for a second, you thought maybe he was trying to push you away before it was too late. Before those final seconds when your father's car pulled out of the drive way in August to take you away. A clean break, months in advance where the heartbreak could simmer and eventually cool. Nothing more than a distant memory that could be looked upon with a fondness and a wonder of what might have been.
Except when you pulled away from him and his arms dropped to his sides, you knew he was listening because his eyes could never lie. The brown brilliance of his emotions were worn not on his sleeve, but his face and when you could admit your truth so freely amidst the foggy outlook of fate, he did not know it would hit him so hard.
Someone cared–you cared. Deeply and willingly.
You saw his glassy eyes. It had touched him. You moved away for a second, turning around to face him on your knees and pulled the blanket back around your shoulders. The balls of your feet dug into the back of your thighs and you realized you hadn't been wearing any shoes and the soles of your socks were wet.
"Eddie, I wouldn't be here if I didn't have the intention of keeping a good thing going."
A good thing. It was the best thing.
You leaned forward, taking your hand and cupping the side of his face to turn it toward you. Eddie Munson had stolen your heart and you took his and ran with it too. He'd never been lucky enough for that to happen before.
"I'm here. No matter what. It's you and me."
He looked at you now with eyes glinting. There was a small nod because you felt your hand that had been resting on his cheek move.
“I-I,” he started but a lump had formed in his throat quickly, so he resorted to a whisper, “I don’t deserve you.”
You saw it in his eyes that he was telling the truth.
“What?”
"I feel like I don't deserve you." You felt his voice was a fragment of what it was. The doubts overtaking his mind as they always did when things became complicated. He wanted to run. The urge was strong like a current ready to wash him away but you were there, holding his face tenderly. And he still said "I feel like I don't deserve you."
He let it spill.
"You're smart… so goddamn smart and I can't even finish one Click's tests… I'm going to end up living here my entire life because that's what's destined for me, sweetheart," he wanted you to let go. To let him run from this treacherous insecurity that festered within him. "You could have anyone and be seen because no one would judge. I don't think I'm ever meant to be happy. Freaks aren't supposed to win the girl and be a hero. I need you to see that, I need you to."
You felt your eyes reflect his own. The pain that he had felt that way and let it sit without knowledge that it was untrue. Hawkins had dealt him a cruel card that perpetrated facts and expectations of a person he was not.
"I need you to see that…" He barely whispered, a tear meeting the pad of your thumb that rested on his face and you shook your head definitively. "I don't want you to regret me."
"Stop it," You mumbled, trying to compose yourself to stake the claim that he wasn't saying what he was, "stop saying that."
"But it's true," He chuckled although it was far from amusing. His chest heaved, lifting with a stuttered breath and his leg that was bent on the chair landed with a thud against the wood of the dock, "everyone knows it is."
"But everyone isn't you! Do you believe that?"
"Why wouldn't I?" His voice was certain and firm and that hurt.
You felt you had failed in making him feel that he mattered too.
Throwing off the blanket, you let it fall behind you and you sat up on your knees, cupping his face with both of your hands with a tenacity you needed. Looking into his sad, innocent eyes made you want to give him everything. Every piece of you that you hadn't given–which was nothing but the words he needed to hear.
"You are the best goddamn thing that has ever happened to me, Eddie Munson," your voice broke at his name, "and you are the only one who sees me for who I really am."
The instant he saw you cry, he did too.
"You are good and kind and caring and the most annoying person I have ever met but I would never regret a life where I loved you," Eddie wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled you close, your foreheads touching as you clutched his face.
"I can't be scared about anything when you look at me."
"I don't deserve you," he whispered again while his hands gripped the fabric of your sweatshirt tightly.
"Please stop saying that… please," you hated to beg, "I need you to know that I would run to the ends of the earth for you."
Even with the doubts of his own path forward.
"I want you to see that, Eddie. You are my everything…"
You ducked your head, searching for his eyes and found them waiting. Running a hand over his face and brushing the hair just out of his eyes gave him a second to see the sincerity you emitted.
"Don't let them take you away from me."
Eddie's lip quivered. His hand moved to grip the back of your neck and he would make a deal with God if it meant he could have forever with you, like this, in the satisfaction of Lover's Lake.
“Don’t let them take you,” You repeated. The people of Hawkins couldn’t take him and run. He had to witness his own worth.
The sun had risen. The golden sunlight a halo above you as he gazed into your teary eyes that certainly were a duplicate of his own.
"You promise?" He asked honestly. He wanted to know you had been telling the truth. Vulnerability allowed him to ask.
"Of course."
Eddie slowly nodded his head, giving you a small, agreeing smile as his eyes watched your eyes then lips, waiting to pull you in to seal his concerns and lock them away for the time being.
He quietly agreed with a reticent 'ok' and kissed you.
You hadn't even realized that the sky had become bright. Day had come and as his salty lips met your own, your embrace shielded him in a tender storm. He cherished the way your hands slid from his face to hair, fusing them together while he pulled you flush to him; tilting his head upwards when your knees propelled you upwards and taller than his sitting form.
A quick rhythmic beeping broke you apart.
Time had expired.
There was still so much to be said.
You pulled away—unwillingly but necessary, wrapping an arm around his shoulder while the other wiped the access tears that had spilled from his eyes. There was a purity to being willing to express yourself in front of someone else. A tragic beauty unfathomable yet available to you.
“I promise,” You repeated and he nodded, resting his forehead on yours one last time before patting the side of your leg.
“You know what that sound means.”
Another week gone, one night spent only to be yearned for again. You frowned.
“Yeah, but it doesn’t mean I have to like it.”
“No,” he gave a closed-lipped smile, “I don’t like it either… but I have to get you back.”
You knew he did. It was how it always went—this one just felt a heavier than before. There wasn’t enough time to make him feel as though everything would be ok even if your words tried to convince him of such. He patted your thigh again.
“Come on,” you moved off of him and watched him pull on his shoes, wipe his eyes again, and while he didn’t have to, he stood and held his hand out to you.
You took it.
When Eddie drove you out of the hidden trails of Lover’s Lake, he didn’t let your hand go from his; where his arm purposefully extended along the center console that barely closed from the cassette tapes that filled it high. Even if the terrain was rocky, he held it tightly.
And it was quiet.
Any normal morning would have had his music blasting through the speakers and threatening to blow your eardrums.
All you could do was rub your thumb over the top of his hand and remain steadfast that although graduation was around the corner, things may not have to change if devotion was honest.
When Eddie pulled his van over just two blocks from your house in the subdivision. The air felt heavy but hopeful. He drew his hand intertwined with yours to his lips, placing a kiss on the back of your hand before letting you go.
The last thing he wanted was for you to be in trouble because of his inability to let go.
“I’ll see you on Monday, ok?” He said with an assured nod. You nodded and made for the door, shutting it close without a slam, then you walked away.
You mind begged to look behind. Begged to see him as he made sure you rounded the corner without a bother and then made his own way back home but you didn’t.
You couldn’t.
Because the nagging sense that his words of “holding you back” and the concept of what you deserved littered all your thoughts. All you could do not to cry before you got to your room was count the steps you were taking to get there.
Eddie would lie if he was ever asked if he thought about the conversation after you had left. He couldn’t even pick up his guitar because his mind was left racing.
Tumblr media
When Monday had arrived, you were nervous to see if he would be different; that fragile masculinity had breached his mind and an openness to be was suddenly taboo. The anxiety of walking to your seat in the lunchroom was eating away at you as you stood in line for the unappetizing food they were serving—only for it to build as the chaos of the room became clear just beyond the archway. Jocks, preps, nerds, and more filled their tables and the sounds of their conversations echoed loudly throughout the room. But you made your way to your seat beside Nancy as she worked on her calculus homework that had been assigned hours before–knowing that if you looked up, you had a perfect view of him.
Knowing that you had taken that spot for the sole reason of being able to steal a glance whenever you felt inclined to because the spot was directly across the vast room from his own.
“Hey,” Nancy spoke without looking up from her textbook, popping a celery stick into her mouth at the same time, “how was your weekend?”
You couldn’t even answer because you had lost control and looked up, hoping that those bleeding eyes were staring back at you and into your soul as they did every time. An unspoken appreciation for the person that knew you better than all, yet had to be held far away because of the forces at play. You hated that it still existed after what you both had said.
But as your eyes lifted from your tray and your head looked straight in his direction, those eyes were looking back at you. His knee perched on his chair and his hand fishing for a pretzel in his bag.
Just for a second, you had dismissed all the concerns you had mulled over because the gleam in his eyes as he looked at you from across the room made your heart stop.
He always had the same affect.
Suddenly, you couldn’t wait for Friday to come. Spring break couldn’t come fast enough.

⸻⸻ ﹕ WELCOME TO ⠀ › ⠀ GLASSHOUSE : EXTENDED.
Tumblr media
step into the mesmerizing world of GLASSHOUSE INCORPORATED, or just GLASSHOUSE as fans lovingly call it, a fictional entertainment powerhouse born in 2008 under the genius of the one and only DO GA-IN. this creative hub isn't your run-of-the-mill company; it's a dynamic force blending music, modelling, and acting into an electrifying mix.
GLASSHOUSE wears many hats – record label, talent agency, music production wizard. picture this: over ten groundbreaking groups emerged from its ranks during its golden era. at the heart of it all was the debut of LILYPAD, a four-member girl group that rocked the stage and put GLASSHOUSE on the map with a splash of resources and recognition. under the skilled guidance of DO GA-IN, GLASSHOUSE thrived, earning praise for its ability to produce star power and shape the careers of emerging artists.
fast forward to 2015, and a bombshell announcement: GA-IN, the founder extraordinaire, was taking a step back. in her place? none other than GRACE, the youngest member from LILYPAD. the news rattled cages, sparking protests and even a temporary boycott, but GLASSHOUSE weathered the storm, proving that change, though unexpected, is part of the game.
beyond the glitz and glamour, GLASSHOUSE is known for its tight-knit artist community. the company's knack for nurturing talent has created a haven where producers and staff members flourish. it's a vibe, a family, a place where creativity meets comfort.
but, like any good story, there's a flip side. GLASSHOUSE has faced its fair share of critique for the age-old issue of overworking artists. it's a tightrope walk – being hailed for its artist-friendly atmosphere while catching flak for potential burnout. this contradiction underscores the complexities within the entertainment industry and prompts ongoing conversations about the well-being of artists.
in the ever-evolving narrative of GLASSHOUSE INC, one thing remains clear: this fictional giant is a testament to the pulsating rhythm of the entertainment industry. a story marked by rise, fall, and redemption, GLASSHOUSE invites you into its world, where dreams are spun, challenges are faced head-on, and the show goes on.
Tumblr media
GLASSHOUSE INC is more than just a building; it's a mesmerizing architectural marvel that defies traditions. as you approach the structure, its brilliance becomes immediately apparent. a large building with set glass walls dominates the skyline, reflecting the surrounding structures and the vast expanse of sky. the play of light and reflections on its mirrored surface sets it apart, making it a standout gem in the urban landscape.
the exterior design is a testament to modern aesthetics, with sleek lines and a contemporary feel. the entire structure is encased in mirrors, creating a striking visual effect as it mirrors the cityscape, seamlessly blending into the environment while simultaneously standing out. this unique choice of materials adds an element of luxury and reinforces the company's commitment to innovation and uniqueness.
surrounded by a concrete jungle, GLASSHOUSE offers a breath of fresh air, literally. lush greenery in the form of trees envelops the building, providing a natural contrast to the urban setting. those trees serve as a visual break, creating a pleasant balance between nature and modernity. it's an intended nod to the company's dedication to creating a comfortable and inviting space for both its artists and the public.
inside GLASSHOUSE, they've got a knack for making things look exotic. you walk in, and there's this vibe like you're in a fancy jungle. they've strategically placed wild plants around, and it's like a mini nature escape right in the middle of the city chaos. it's not just by chance – they've done it on purpose to bring a bit of calmness into the busy city life. so, as you're strolling by, you get glimpses of greenery that make you forget you're in the middle of a concrete jungle. it's their way of saying, " hey, we're not just about business; we've got a bit of nature tucked in here, too. "
in some areas of GLASSHOUSE, the mirrored facade gives way to sections without windows, providing a mysterious allure. behind these walls lie carefully curated displays of plants that are visible to the public. this intentional blend of nature and architecture invites curiosity, offering a glimpse into the creative essence of GLASSHOUSE.
overall, GLASSHOUSE is more than a corporate headquarters; it's a symbol of sophistication, innovation, and a balanced coexistence with nature. the mirrored exterior reflects the surroundings and the company's commitment to pushing boundaries and creating an environment that captivates the imagination. as the sun sets, the building transforms into a dazzling spectacle, capturing the essence of GLASSHOUSE INC – a beacon of creativity in the heart of the city.

how to treat yourself on a budget
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I often get comments about my self-care routines being unrealistic, and I get it; not everyone can afford a facial, a professional massage, or some fancy lush products, so here I have a guide on how to tread yourself on a lower budget! <3
Got some oats and a banana? Great, try the oatmeal banana face mask! Mash a banana, add some honey, and add your oats; let that soak for a while, and put it on your face! (link down below)
Exfoliate, shave and put coconut oil on your legs. It will feel amazing.
Make yourself a green tea, and once your tea is done, put the tea bags on your eyes, it helps with dark circles, and you will feel great!
Make a new playlist with your favorite songs.
Slice up some cucumber and put the slices on your face; I don't know if it actually does something, but I've seen it In movies, and it looks fun.
Make a smoothie; my favorite is banana, frozen raspberries, and coconut milk! :)
Drink a lot of water.
Look for a yoga or stretching routine on youtube; my favorite is the Pamela Reif 30 stretching routine <3 (link down below)

in lieu of a commonplace book
saturday, jan 27, 2024
*brennan lee mulligan voice* heeeeeeeelllllllllllllloooooooOOOOOOOOO one and all and welcome back for another thrilling episode of...whatever this is. thank you for being here.
It's 2024! Say hi, intrepid heroes!
reading recently finished:
-orwell's roses by rebecca solnit (audio) - glad I listened, ultimately very gratifying - history, criticism, extremely lush garden-filled prose and love for growing things - nona the ninth by tamsyn muir - felt so much about [redacted] it made me cry. i can unblock ALL THE TAGS NOW - the blue sword by robin mckinley (audio) - catching up on old school fantasy continues -when the angels left the old country by sacha lamb (audio) - beautiful. not not in conversation with good omens but doing something different.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
recently begun: -the ministry of the future by kim stanley robinson - can't decide if it's a scifi novel or a policy brief about ways to combat climate change- reading on my mom's recommendation -babel: an arcane history by r.f.kuang - withholding judgment, but i know you probably want me to hate it and so far i don't, really! to my own surprise -the shadow of the wind by carlos ruiz zafrón (audio) - spooky, post-modern but incredibly good at sounding like it is of the time it depicts. many thoughts on the audio book narrator's accent work, most favorable -one corpse too many by ellis peters. wild that i have only just begun reading the cadfael mysteries
listening last week was about discovering and putting on continuous loop the group trousdale on the recommendation of @m2pixie (!) and other trusted friends; the energy, the harmonies! they fill a girl group void i didn't realize i had, it feels like the best kind of throwback, like old chicks or something, some desperately needed bops. exhibit a: bad blood.
Tumblr media
today my daylist introduced me to joy oladokun and i'm so glad it did. love her vibe, love this cover art. had to take a picture of my desk, the visuals were so satisfying.

watching the newest series of netflix's lupin!! so far i'm really, really enjoying where this season has been spending most of its time-- the new characters, the new heists, the new stakes. especially fun to watch with friends where we can all shout about the mrs doubtfire of it all, the betrayals, the misdirection, the 'he can't keep getting away with this!.' the original lupin series will always bring back memories of watching it in early lockdown; i'm glad that there's this now to think about and remember instead.
Tumblr media
playing hollow knight hollow knight hollow kniiiiiiight. bought it a few months ago when it was on sale, after hanging out and watching @dimir-charmer stream for us a bit, but playing it yourself is a different game. i'm having a blast. it's becoming a problem. i'm having to be so so good and mature in how much i let myself just get suckered in to a full day spent in my little buggy maze adventures. the temptation to keep going until i've made a meaningful advancement of some kind (today: got the longer nail! last time: beat hornet! saved zote the mighty, got the baldur shell charm, and beat the gruz mother!) is very, very real. have also gotten around this by listening to lots of lo-fi hollow knight beats to relax and study to while being 'productive.'

(found this screenshot online, and holy extra health batman)
making pancakes. lots and lots of weekend pancakes. sent a bunch of mail since new year's, and have some new arts and crafts (charcoal pencils!! those little paper cone blender guys! better paper) to fuck around with next time i want to get ~artistic. watch this space.
working on teaching is so all-consuming. it's great, i love it. the course (maps class! if you see that tag, this is that) is going well, i think! first three lectures down. the students i've gotten to know i really like, the material has yet to get old (see one - do one - teach one is so real. i understand this class now, finally, in a way i don't think i did just being the TA, even after three times). it takes so much longer to just copy-paste-change color and font on slides than it should! i've regularly been getting four-five hours of sleep on monday nights before teaching on tuesdays, but it has meant that i don't have the brain space to be self-conscious while i'm 'on', i just. go. having fun selecting teaching 'fits, having (less) fun handling all the students who joined in the second or third week and need help with catching up, but it's not their fault there was a waiting list and lots of turnover.
Tumblr media
(petrus roselli - portolan chart of the mediterranean, 1466)
non-teaching: - student letter of recommendation for dental school (DONE) - conference panel proposal (due 1/31) -submit revised conference paper for that prize (due 1/30) -send draft of grant application to A for her to be able to write a letter of recommendation (due IMMEDIATELY WHY ARE YOU ON TUMBLR) (you have until 2/15 to fix it but she needs the draft!) -chapter 3 edits (lmao) -read for that other course you're meant to be the TA for (oops) - give i. feedback on her thing (tonight) -RAship hours (c'mon these are actually paid work, please do them)

Loonatics Unleashed is honestly nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. I'm a big critic when it comes to writing but I mostly had no issues with it. The characters, at times, can be bland but they're not atrocious or annoying. The re used jokes can get old fast but it isn't a crime against humanity calling back to something. And sometimes loose ends are left untied (ex: Pink the Pug and Danger Duck) but it makes sense considering the show had a horrendous first impression which resulted in the hate sinking it. A lot of the problems the show has are a result of it being canned too early. It's clear from the second season that LU listened to its critics so I believe, if given the chance, a third season would have showed great improvement in all of the above.
So now that I've got my nitpicks- that are just that, nitpicks!- out of the way. One of my favorite aspects of LU is the animation. Which is, ironically, one of the more criticized aspects. Is it perfect? No. Does it have its wonky moments? Yeah. But does it do the job of portraying what needs to be portrayed? And does it treat us with cute little details sometimes? Absolutely! I might have skipped the season 2 intro every chance I got but it wasn't for the animation. The new clips they had were charming! The LU style in particular is reminiscent of anime, a common trend in shows at the time, but it's also got some twang to it that helps the characters really pop.
My favorite animation in particular is the final fight scene in the series. Intense, fast, with incredible choreography. And the shot moments later of Ace, sharp ears shriveled, weakly holding himself up with a smile as his teammates rush to him. It's full of so much character! You can feel the emotions in the scene!!
The backgrounds, too, are very gorgeous! The lush, subtropical forestry of the Apocalypso come to mind. That entire episode is an ethereal palette! It's also a great detail how well Lexi's pink and green blend so well with her environment- making her appear as if she belongs there, which can work as foreshadowing for her strong connection with the plant life.
And of course the cheesy dialogue with sometimes nonsensical reference but ultimately silly intentions. It's fun, it's snappy, and it's maybe a bit dated- but who said there was anything wrong with being a product of it's time? Maybe what everyone says isn't the most memorable but Rev's rambling, Tech's techno babble, and Ace's play on words are a distinct aspect of their characters. And distinction is very important with your cast- especially your main characters!
Lexi is Lola's descendant but not once in the show is she sexualized. She's a respected member of the team who is viewed highly by Zadavia and the other Loonatics- so much so that she took over for Ace as leader one time! She's the action girl who is kind and fierce and incredibly dedicated to her passions. And, it's a small detail but after watching lots of shows with the sole girl ending up with the main guy, it's refreshing that her relationships remain wholly platonic! She and Ace are more like best friends than future (romantic) partners. Small, I know, but for an aro like me who is sick to death of that trope it's such a cool thing!
LU is far from a perfect show. Everyone and their grandma seems to have slready swung a bat at it. But there's a lot to praise the show for! Moral of the story- WATCH THE SHOW!!!
