“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.”

Concerning Almsgiving
1 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before others in order to be seen by them, for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 “So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your alms may be done in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Concerning Prayer
5 “And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 6 But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
7 “When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 “Pray, then, in this way:
Our Father in heaven, may your name be revered as holy. 10 May your kingdom come. May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.
14 “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Concerning Fasting
16 “And whenever you fast, do not look somber, like the hypocrites, for they mark their faces to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Concerning Treasures
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
The Eye
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If, then, the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
Serving Two Masters
24 “No one can serve two masters, for a slave will either hate the one and love the other or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
Do Not Worry
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to your span of life? 28 And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ 32 For it is the gentiles who seek all these things, and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
34 “So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today. — Matthew 6 | New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition (NRSVUE) New Revised Standard Version, Updated Edition. [Jesus said,] Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also ... Isaiah's outline of the steps to forgiveness
Isaiah’s outline of the steps to forgiveness
Today we will be looking at the core Bible principle of forgiveness, and how we have the ability, through faith in Messiah, to gain the privilege of being reconciled with our Maker when we recognize that our lives are not in alignment with his purposes. To accomplish this, we must repent of those things that are outside of his will for us. Isaiah 55:7 – Let wicked people abandon their ways. Let…

'If you ask for bread, your heavenly Father will not give you a stone.' The sages call this a kal va'chomer inference (i.e., קַל וְחמר, "light and weighty"), namely, that if a light condition is true, then a heavier one is certainly true. Jesus used this kind of reasoning all the time: If God cares for the needs of the birds of the air, how much more (kal va'chomer) will He care for your needs? (Matt. 6:26). If God so clothes the grass of the field, how much more (kal va'chomer) will He clothe you (Matt. 6:30)? If your heavenly Father knows the number of hairs on your head, surely He knows the state of your soul. And if God wants us to walk in righteousness, kal va'chomer does He want us to know His  love. Only God can give to us the love for Him that He fully knows we so desperately need; only God can deliver us from our "disordered loves" to take hold of what is truly essential. All we can do is ask, and keep on asking- even as we struggle on, despite ourselves- until we begin to understand what we really need. It's as if we are constantly being asked, "Is this what you want?" and our choices confess the truth of what we believe. Only God does the miracle of real change within the human heart- only God can give life from the dead!

As the Day Ends
Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV): “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Evening Meditation: As the day draws to a close and the quiet of the evening settles in, let us…

MATTHEW S.O.A.P. ~ CHAPTER 6
Thursday, 2/22/24
SCRIPTURE:
'“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.  "Otherwise, you have no reward with your Father in heaven.  "... "But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father Who is in secret.  "And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.  "When you pray, don’t babble like the Gentiles, since they imagine they’ll be heard for their many words.  "Don’t be like them, because your Father knows the things you need before you ask Him. " ~ Matthew 6:1,6-8
OBSERVATION:
Verse 1 leads into a discussion about giving, but righteousness is more than that...
My "righteousness" - my efforts at righteousness - are nothing compared to His...
...and the righteous that can be - is - mine through Jesus...
So it's nothing for me to brag about as if I had anything to with it...
...other than accepting the Father's grace and Jesus's sacrifice...
...and then bragging on Him for His blessings and the good in my life...
And in the same way, is some public confession confessing anything more than just the "need" for this same kind of "righteousness" attention?
"Look how much I sinned! I'm SO repentant..."
"I'm a worse sinner than you'll ever be..."
Such a fine line... making it all about me instead of keeping it all about Jesus...
APPLICATION:
Be careful not to practice my righteousness in front of others in order to be seen by them...
Go into my private room, shut my door, and pray to my Father in secret...
Even then and there, don’t babble on, imagining I’ll be heard for my many words...
"Brag on Him..."
Walk the fine line... ("the narrow way...")
PRAYER:
Father God - I ask forgiveness for my inappropriate displays of humility and self-serving righteousness - Keep me truly humble and thankful for Your grace and for Your Son and for Your Holy Spirit - In Jesus's Name, and for Your glory...
Walking the line with you - through Him...

What Do You Value? (Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21)
Is what you are pursuing today really going to matter in 50 billion millennia?
The Sermon on the Mount, by Beryl Lewis (1939-2021) “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their…

5 Marks of a Disciple: Prayer
Matthew 6.5-15 Prayer is something we have talked about before. Has it been woven into the fabric of your daily routine yet? Time spent with just you and your Father? If not, today’s a great day to get started. If you are new to prayer, having a plan is helpful. It’s going to take some intentionality to get started because as much as we may want prayer to just happen, unless we are intentional…

Real peace is generated by trust in God
Real peace is generated by trust in God
Today we will be looking at the topic of trust or faith in God, and how, regardless of our own abilities or resources, our ultimate trust in all things should be in God. Philippians 4:6-7 – Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace…

So, I tell you this: Do not be thinking all the time about how to stay alive. Do not have trouble in your mind about the food and drink that you need. Do not always be thinking about the clothes that you need to wear. Your life is more important than the food that you eat. Your body is more important than your clothes... Even if you are always thinking about your life, you cannot make it go on any longer, not even by one hour! [The length of your life will always be in God's hands.] It is God that gives [you each new day, and the things you need to get through it.] God will certainly take care of you, much more than He takes care of the [birds and the] grass. [If He cares for even a single flower so tenderly, do you think He would overlook you, His child?] You should trust Him more than you do! So, do not have trouble in your mind about these things. Do not always say, “What will we eat?”, or “What will we drink?”, or “What will we wear?” People who do not know God are always thinking about these things. But as for you, your Father in heaven knows that you need them. Instead [of worrying, then], always think about the things that are important in the kingdom of heaven. Always do what God shows you is right. Then He will also give you the things that you need each day.
