last night (09.09.22) i took a trip to the cinema with a group of my friends to see the newly released film: ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies’ which was directed by Halina Reijn and a screenplay by Sarah DeLappe.
these are my honest opinions about the film so spoilers ahead, obviously.
my view on the film as a whole was that it was an enjoyable film that made me laugh at a few times which is fitting because it’s a comedy thriller/horror. the film didn’t scare me as much as it just made me uncomfortable at parts such as when the characters just started making out during the film. the only part of the film where i feared for my life was when Lee Pace’s character Greg started howling like a wolf and lounging and chasing a group of terrified blood soaked woman.
now time to get into the actual film. i didn’t enjoy that the film opened with two of the main characters mid make out session, i felt it was unnecessary and just flat out made me uncomfortable. it felt like something i wasn’t supposed to be seeing. you don’t walk into a showing of what you believe to be a horror/thriller and then it opens with two people making out.
prior to seeing the film i had looked on the film’s tv tropes page and i had seen that the film had the trope of “accidental suicide” and also the trope of “anyone can die” so i knew slightly what i was in for without actually spoiling the film for myself.
i had a sneaking suspicion that David would be the first to die out of the group (and if it hadn’t have been him my second guess would’ve been Greg who did in fact die next) however i didn’t expect his death to be the accidental suicide that i saw listed in the tropes. during the scuffle between the girls to get the gun from Jordan i thought that Alice was the one to accidentally fire it and accidentally shoot herself, that however wasn’t the case as it was Jordan who fired the gun accident or not. even though david was the one who fit the trope i thought that he’d have died to an accidental overdose for his cocaine addiction and not a slit throat. it’s kind of ironic that the whole reason the plot of the film happened was because of a tik tok though.
i really do enjoy the trope anyone can die trope because like the name says anybody could be next nobody is off limits. it leaves you on edge the whole time you watch it and i just enjoy that as it keeps things fresh. unsurprisingly however both Bee and Sophie end up surviving until the very end of the film.
i found it nice that there wasn’t one psycho killer that was out to get the group and instead it was their own actions and fear that lead them to their own downfall. it’s an interesting concept that i think the film did a good job pulling off. i do wish that some of the deaths were less glamours and more realistic, specifically Jordan and Greg, as they should’ve looked way more messed up than what they actually did as it’s hard to maintain good looks after falling a few stories onto the hard solid ground. they should’ve done something more like Emma’s death which is portrayed as a bloody mess all down the staircase and walls with her face smashed in from the impact. it’s understandable why they didn’t do this for all the deaths though as this probably would’ve made them have to move the rating to an 18 instead of a 15.
i didn’t really like the songs they chose to use throughout the film. it’s probably just because i don’t like that style of music but i just didn’t really connect with it though i didn’t bother me too much. however i did enjoy the little repeated theme they had throughout the film that would crop up in some of the more suspenseful scenes.
as for characters Alice was probably my favourite of them all. all of the characters had very noticeable flaws but those are important because those flaws are what ended up getting them killed in the end.
i do wonder if Bee or Sophie faced any consequences after the events of the film for their actions because both of them did kill people.
overall i’d rate the film ★★★★/5
even if they didn’t have the scenes that made me uncomfortable i don’t think i would rate it any higher. i’d gladly accept this film into my dvd collection when it comes out though.

WONWOO HCs
+ just some headcanons i’ve thought abt during the past few weeks (read more link still isn’t working, sorry :/)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
will teach you how to play some of his favorite video games. he’ll be so patient with you. doesn’t matter if you suck, what matters is you’re trying your best to learn something that he loves to do
if you happen to enjoy some mobile games, he’ll lay his head on your shoulder watching you play. he loves the annoyed huffs you let out everytime you lose
when he’s not playing video games, he’s probably doing something else with you
like going to bookshops to look for new books to read
sometimes you based it on how cute the cover is without actually reading the synopsis of the book
he laughs everytime but also picks out some books he knows you'll like even if the cover design is ugly
since you two don’t live together, it’s sometimes hard to buy books especially if you two want the same one but they only have one stock
which will prompt the two of you to share. much like how other couples watch a tv show together, not watching the next episode if the other one isn’t there
that’s how you are with the book.
he probably has a goodreads to keep track of everything he’s ever read. it’s a private account with only you as his follower so you can look at his reviews and pick a book to read
sometime he’ll address you directly on the review section
“i know you’ll love this just as much as i did, it’s very perfectly written and i’m hoping you’ll give reading this a chance once you have the free time to do so.” or
“this book reminded me of you while reading it. everything that’s written here encompasses everything i admire about you. maybe one day, if you give me a chance, i’ll read it to you with you laid on my arms.”
treating goodreads like a post office for love letters
speaking of love letters
will let you borrow his books and midway through reading you’ll see a paper in between the pages
“how are you liking it so far? i hope it suits your taste. i can’t wait for you to finish this and talk about it with me. just seeing the look on your face when you talk about something that you enjoyed keeps me going.” swoons
will look at you funnily when you ask to recreate a scene from a book
like.. idk.. a kiss? slow dancing?
but he won’t refuse cuz he secretly want to do it as well <3
matching bookmarks hehe
either customized or something sentimental to you both
like the first note you gave him while you two were still new and vice versa
or maybe you two do activities like making bookmarks for each other?
watching the film adaptation of books
even if you or him fall asleep midway, atleast he/you know what happened in the end cuz you read the book
will probably rewatch it again after a few days, powering through the end just to see how well the film was
if you two didn’t like it, it’s fine. you can always count on the book
if you two ended up liking it though, he’ll add it to the list of movies you both liked.
ok…. are you ready…. letterboxd
he probably has one too
he has these types of account for you
so even if you two are away from each other, you can see his recommendations and what he’s been up to
the fact that all his reviews somehow ends up being about you and how you might like it/reminds him of you says a lot about your relationship
the way he thinks of you everytime he does something while you two are away from each other and he makes it known by writing reviews on goodreads or letterboxd <3
Tumblr media
notes. i feel like i always centered wonwoo around books so much cause when i was still learning about svt, my best friend sent me a video guide and the description for wonwoo was something about liking books and during that time i was reading soooo many books and thought “oh wow is he meant to be my bias” then a couple months later here i am.

Precure Daily's Sixth Anniversary
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On April 10, 2018, I posted the first review in the project that became Precure Daily. It wasn't actually on tumblr at that time, but on Facebook. The plan was to watch an episode every day and just post some thoughts, but it evolved into reviews and screenshots and that necessitated a whole blog, and here we are. That was six years ago today!
Six years. It's hard to believe. I honestly, truly didn't think I'd still be doing this. Whether I petered out before the end, or managed to get it all done in the 2-3 years I anticipated, I figured I'd have stopped by now. But somehow I haven't given up yet! I'm still watching, still writing, and still getting new fans to share with, and that makes it all worth it.
The past year was slow, I will readily acknowledge it. I only got about 7 reviews out in that time, including the one that just went up earlier today, but one of those was the Go Go movie. That was a whole undertaking, it took me nine months to get out. Granted, for about 6 of those 9 months it was just sitting there unchanged. I'd open it occasionally to poke at it but then not end up getting much done. Maybe it still wasn't the best it could have been but I'm proud of it nonetheless. It was a good review for a good movie. Also, I got to review the very first All Stars, even if it was a short film. Having recently wached the most recent All Stars brings that experience full circle and it's real nice.
One small hiccup is that, at the time of writing, I haven't yet gotten out the traditional Honoka birthday post. I just haven't had time to sit down and gather artwork for it. Hopefully that'll come out in the next day or two!
Outside of the blog, let's look at the wider world of the Precure series over the last year
I said last year that I hadn't finished Delicious Party, and that's still true. When it was on air, I was watching it with a friend and she was really into it; we are going to resume watching together to finally push through it.
HIrogaru Sky's second half was good, it lacked a little bit of the driving power of the first half and the villain plot never properly came together in my opionion. I still love the characters, I think they're my favorite cast in a good while.
I did not watch Otona Precure. Although I've watched Go Go before, I want to finish this current watchthrough for the blog before I jump into it. Maybe I'll even review it as I go, that remains to be seen. I've heard mixed things about it and I'm not very big on the idea that the girls just go back to teenagers when they transform, but I'll reserve judgment.
Wonderful Precure did not appeal to me when information started coming out, and I fell off it for a few weeks when the first couple eps didn't impress me, but I decided to keep going and it's thoroughly enjoyable. I don't think it's going to crack my top 10 but it should be a solid middle of the road series.
I watched the Delicious Party Precure movie and Precure All Stars F with friends in fairly close proximity, and wow do those movies exist on opposite ends of the spectrum. DeliPa's film was one of the weakest Precure movies I've seen, while All Star F was phenomenal. I need to rewatch it.
I did say last year that the blog would look different when I finish Go Go. That is still true. I should be able to wrap that up in a few months, then comes the next phase of things. Deets when it happens.
And also just because I can, here's some recommendations for shows outside of Precure you should watch that came out in the last year-ish:
Oshi no Ko
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (featuring Wonderful Precure's Tanezaki Atsumi as a monotone elf)
SPY x FAMILY (featuring Wonderful Precure's Tanezaki Atsumi as a psychic toddler)
Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger
The Last of Us
And I think that's it for this year's update! Here's to another year of watching and writing about Precure! Thanks as always to my loyal friends and fans for making this project a success: @sailorzombiestar, @vertixscribe, PaintedOutlaw, @hanasaki-tsubomi, yugimon135 (can't tag you for some reason), and my newest fan @nono-bunny.
Here's all my previous sappy anniversary posts if you want to go back and read them.

Update: new info about David Tennant's elusive 1996 short film Quality Control!
I've got a few new updates to add to this post I did a while back about a short film David Tennant did in 1996 called Quality Control. If you haven't yet read my first post about this short film, you can read it at the link I posted above. And then come on back!
Firstly, Quality Control was broadcast many more times than I thought it was! I thought it was only broadcast four times between 1996 and 1998, so imagine my surprise when I did some digging and found it had actually broadcast eleven times between 1996 and 1999. Oops!
But by far the biggest update I have on this short is that recently I've discovered why it was made...and by whom!
But first, the updated broadcast list:
BROADCAST DATES:
1996:
4 Jan 1996 - 1:55pm - Channel 4
10 Jun 1996 - 1:55pm - Channel 4
9 Dec 1996 - 2pm - Channel 4
10 Dec 1996 - 1:30pm - Regional S4C
1997:
18 Jun 1997 - 10:45am - Regional S4C
25 Jun 1997 - 10:45am - Channel 4 & Regional S4C
1998:
8 Feb 1998 - 3:30pm - Channel 4
26 Oct 1998 - 1:30pm - Channel 4
6 Nov 1998 - 1:30pm - Regional S4C
1999:
18 Jun 1999 - 1:30pm - Channel 4
29 Jun 1999 - 1:30p - Regional S4C
Of course now that I've found these, I'm aware there may be other broadcast dates I have yet missed. If so, I didn't find any past 2000. But I reserve the right to be mistaken, ha!
Now here's the bigger update: the why, and the who!
Published 23 June 1995 in The Scotsman, here's the article that broke it wide open for me, and its relevant quote:
"Simplicity and technical finesse marked this year's graduation films at the Edinburgh College of Art degree show. While Hannah Lewis's Quality Control makes excellent use of a superior comic performance by David Tennant as a youth trainee on his first day in a Leith sweatshop…"
Tumblr media
WOW, right?
But this new information leads to all sorts of other questions. If this short was initially part of a degree course, how did it make the leap to broadcast? Was it in one of the short film UK production schemes happening at the time which were helping new film creatives launch their ideas: i.e., First Reels, Tartan Shorts, New Found Land?
I'm not sure. At first blush, Quality Control doesn't seem to have been included in a larger broadcast of shorts like Bite and Spaces had been (Bite was shown on the program Don't Look Down on STV, and Spaces was shown on STV as a part of First Reels.) In its broadcast listings, Quality Control is always listed on its own.
The description the article gives on the short is also very interesting. The article says David played a youth trainee on his first day in a Leith sweatshop. But reviews and blurbs of the short's plot in newspapers say he was a job trainee who becomes a quality controller/inspector at a skateboard factory. It seems to me that a sweatshop and a skateboard factory are two very different places, but are they? Was that changed somehow between its showing at the College of Art degree show, or was it just the article writer's bad description?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blurbs about Quality Control from various newspapers
And just who is Hannah Lewis, its creator? Well my money's on producer Hannah Lewis, who's worked with Morag McKinnon and Colin McLaren. They all met at the Edinburgh College of Art, and had made three shorts together by 1999 (one of which, 'Home', won a BAFTA!) But if she is the right Hannah Lewis, Quality Control isn't listed anywhere on her IMDb. So while I can't be sure she's the short's creator, the time is right, and the place is right. A lot of the dots sure do line up!
Now we know why it was done - and who did it - can we find it? Is it archived somewhere? I haven't found it so far if it is - at least it's not archived at the Moving Image Archive in Glasgow, or at the British Film Institute. But I've yet to check to see if the Edinburgh College of Art may have it.
As far as all the other questions this raises - like how did David get involved with the project (since he was living in London at the time) and if he knew someone who knew someone who...ya know? Pfffft. Your guess is as good as mine! It's one more "I dunno" to add to the pile.
In conclusion, we may be as close as we've ever been to finding out more about David's elusive 1996 short, Quality Control.
I'll keep on searching!

An Honest Review of Mean Girls (2024)
I have seen so many negative reviews of this movie, and I have to say one thing to you guys: you obviously weren’t the target audience if you hated this movie.
First, let me break down some of their complaints, and then I’ll give you the rundown of my personal opinion.
Common Complaint Number One: Renée Rapp’s acting was bad.
Do I need to explain to you why you’re stupid, or are you going to see yourself out the door? If her acting was bad, I’m the next Queen of England. Not only did she bring life to a different version of Regina George, she clearly put some effort into portraying that character. She was probably the second best actor in this movie.
Common Complaint Number Two: Angourie Rice was miscast as Cady Heron; Her singing is bad, her acting is flat, ect.
If I was someone who had just moved to America from another country, I would be reserved too. I would show my emotions less, and I would probably try and do things to fit in with other people I wouldn’t normally do. While I admit her performance can’t match up to Lindsay’s, I also say: can YOU act that well? No. These are professionals. If you think that you can act better, then I’d better see you when they make a musical version of Mean Girls 2. And your complaints with the singing are unfair. She’s Australian- do you know how hard it is to sing with an accent? Oh, well she could just keep the accent when singing- DO YOU KNOW HOW DIFFERENT AN AUSTRALIAN ACCENT IS FROM A KENYAN ONE? The door is to your right.
Common Complaint Number Three: The Fashion is bad. (WARNING: Long segment)
This is… wow. I’m disappointed. Honestly, I am. While some of the choices are questionable, do you know how much effort was put into these outfit designs? The first time we see Regina, for example, we see her in all black. Black can represent power, but it can also represent hatred, as another thing; a reference to Cady being told she should hate Regina by her friends. Later on, at the end of the movie, she wears black, all the way up until she gets hit by a bus (which, contrary to what some people say, was not left out of the movie). To show her hatred for Cady. While the outfits may not be perfect, they are quite fitting. To introduce Cady in school, she wears blue- colors associated with sadness, but also nerves. Throughout the movie, Cady is nervous- first to be at school, then to lose her friends, and then to topple Regina, take her place, and be in power. Just because the fashion isn’t perfect and doesn’t make the characters look like models doesn’t mean the acting is bad. (Also, Regina would never use ELF? I am friends with someone who is essentially Regina George but less mean and not as rich, but still pretty up there, and I assure you, she uses ELF)
Complaint Number Four: ALL OF THE SINGING IS AWFUL
Are you deaf? Actually, no. That’s insulting to the deaf people. If you seriously think that all of the songs are awful, you need to never listen to music ever again because you are a disgrace to this society. I will admit, not all of the songs were bangers, but I still have What-Ifs stuck in my head (I agree with one thing, Stupid With Love, both the movie and musical versions, can go with Regina by that bus through)
Complaint Number Five: It’s too much like the original movie but not close enough to the original movie
This is the most common thing I see. People stating that it’s ’trying too hard to be the original movie’ but that it ‘left out key details in the movie that would make it more like the original movie’. Seriously, SHUT UP. Nobody wants to hear you being all ambivalent about your fake reason for hating the movie because someone else told you it’s bad.
Common Complaint Number Six: The acting is bad.
youtube
Look me in the eyes and tell me the actors did not pour their heart and soul into this film. You can’t. There’s the door. Go outside. Touch grass.
Common Complaint Number Seven: It wasn’t marketed as a musical!!!
youtube
youtube
Tumblr media
Do you… not see the music note? Okay, you’re blind. Got it 👍 But if you’re so blind, then almost none of the previous complaints are valid because you couldn’t see the movie.
But in all honesty, this one just legitimately pisses me off, because it just means that people can’t be bothered to pay attention to something that is made obvious to them. Sure, the first trailer didn’t include singing, but it was to get you hooked on the idea, not to advertise the movie. Wake up sheeple.
MY PERSONAL THOUGHTS:
I have my own flurry of complaints. Well, no I don’t. Just two or three. 1. Cady’s entire personality was liking Aaron. I’m sorry, I can’t like a main character who is, in effect, like half the people who dislike this movie, a sheep. And I will admit, there were a FEW times the emotion shown by Cady wasn’t as perfect as it could have been. But it’s not a movie killer. 2. I don’t think the movie addresses very well that Janis was also mean. The ‘At least me and Regina KNOW we’re mean’ gave Janis’s treatment of Cady more effect; made Cady come off less as a villain and more as a victim, whereas the new one completely glosses over it and makes it seem like Janis was the one in the right all along. And three, Cady should have kissed Regina at the beginning and none of this would have happened. If you’re going to give us gay Janis, GIVE US OUR CADINA DAMMNIT.
Otherwise, this movie was amazing! I am a lesbian tho so maybe that’s not objective :P
FINAL RATING: 9/10
LESBIAN O’ METER: 6/10 (Kinda Gay, NGL)

My Movie Review: "Dune: Part 2"
**Caution...May Contain Some Spoilers**
Tumblr media
Alright alright alright y'all.....
Tumblr media
Whew! Dune Part 2.... Where do I even begin??
Okay, FIRST of all.... FIRST OF ALL.... This movie was EPIC. Like, GRAND epic-ness. I haven't seen a movie this epic in a good while. The sound, the musical score, the acting, the cinematography, the costumes, etc... EVERYTHING was so on point! 🤯
When the end credits started rolling, I was sitting there liiiiike....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I couldn't believe what I had just seen lol... 😅 I think I was a little bit in shock and just needed to sit there and contemplate/process all that took place in this movie lol.
Let me tell you all... Love the Dune movies or hate them.... These movies are SO well-done! Idk about other Anons/fans who saw this film, but I just felt transported to a totally different world while watching it. Seeing this film in all of its IMAX glory was amaaazing! 👏🏾 I highly recommend seeing this movie in IMAX if you have the ability to.
Okay, let me get down to the nitty gritty of everybody in the film.....
Tumblr media
The Cast First of all... Can I just say? This cast did an AMAZING job in this film as a whole. Like, EVERYONE was awesome in this. Everyone was pulling their weight, and was hitting their marks...even the background actors.... I was like, "damn!" There weren't any weak links in this film (imo).
Timothee Timothee BABAAAY....Timothee suprised me! I'll be honest, I've seen a few of Timmy's films before, but none of his roles (that I had seen) had really wowed me, you know? But Dune Part 2?? Oh...he definitely served. 👏🏾 He started off in the beginning of the movie being the same ol' Timmy I know lol....But by towards the END of the movie?? Hunny chiiiiile.... He had me believing his character was feeling his own hype lol. 😅🤣 Timothee really outdid himself with this movie. His voice didn't even sound the same towards the end of the movie. And the foreign made up language that he (and the rest of the cast) had to speak? Superb! Paul's duel at the end with Feyd was awesome (more on Feyd later). It really looked like they were fighting to the death. I'm glad the scene didn't last too long though, because it was pretty intimate and intense. Overall, awesome acting by Timothee. Loved his transformation towards the end of the movie.
Zendaya Ahhh Zendaya! 😃 Zendaya's Chani was definitely the heart of this film as most reviews say. Her character was somewhat of a cynic, but only because she wasn't a "believer". I know Z's acting has been criticized in this film online, but I actually think she did a fine job? I was impressed by her action sequences and her portrayal of Chani's anger and frustration with Paul and those blindly believing in the Maud'Dib. I was SO happy that Z had way more screen time in this movie than in the first one. I also loved how she was given some action scenes/sequences!! I think this is her first action film on the big screen? She was shooting guns, fighting, etc. I was like, "Go girl!!" 👏🏾😃 Denis seemed to have a love affair with Zendaya's face lol, because I think she got most of the close-ups in this movie lol.😅 I actually thought that she and Timmy had pretty good chemistry in the film. It wasn't "passionate" or "sexy" chemistry, but they had good chemistry nonetheless. For those wondering.....YES, there is a love scene lol.... 👀 But it was tastefully done imo.
Rebecca Whew chiiiile, let me tell you... Rebecca scared me in this movie lol. 😅 I was liiiike....
Tumblr media
She put the "Mother" in Mother okay? LOL 😅 I always love Rebecca, she's a superb actress and infinitely amazing in EVERYTHING she's in. She had me believing she was the Reverend Mother okay? After she drank that holy life water or whatever it was, she totally changed into someone else lol. 🤣
Austin Lawwwd....this man... I didn't even recognize him onscreen okay? 😩 Austin did not come here to play, and he played Feyd Rautha beautifully. He was ruthless, cunning, yet charming, sexy, and actually had an honor code. During most of the movie, every time he came on screen, I didn't know whether to be scared or turned on... 👀🙈 The Gladiator Scene was like wow.... I always thought Austin was a good actor since "Elvis", but that Gladiator arena scene had me like: "Whoa...he's a good actor!" His acting with his eyes was amazing... Excellent job. 👏🏾 My only gripe was that he was in the movie for far too short of time! Believe it or not, I wanted more Feyd.... 😩 I'm so excited to see what's next in his career, because so far, based on what I've seen, Austin can really disappear in roles. Like chiiiile...this man.....I swear, I wouldn't have even realized it was him had it not been for his eyes and lips lol. 🤭
Florence Florence did an amazing job in the limited role that she was given. Although her role was small, her acting was on point. 🥰 Even Christopher Walken (who's the least Christopher Walken-like I've ever seen him in a role lol) was so subdued, but did a great job as well. I wish we were able to see more of Princess Irulan in scenes (I loved her costumes!), but I know she will have a much larger part in Part 3/Dune Messiah.
Javier LOL I loved Javier in this. He's always good in everything he's in. He had a much smaller role in Dune Part 1, so it was nice seeing him have a larger role in Dune Part 2. His character of Stilgar gave the film much-needed light-heartedness and some funny parts to chuckle at.
PROS
Everyone's acting was on point!!!
The movie had an EPIC vibe and really transports you to a totally different world
The music was haunting and amazing.... I LOVED "Chani's Theme"... Hanz Zimmer really created a beautiful score for this Dune World...I loved it 😊
The movie was 3 hours long, but it never felt boring to me. It was very interesting to me, and when the film credits roll, you're left thinking: "They're really gonna leave things like this???" I wanted MORE!! 😩
The film felt believable. I know it's sci-fi, but the way the film touches upon normal societal issues, it almost makes you feel that this type of world actually exists.
I loved that Zendaya had more screen time in this movie 🥰
CONS
There were just a few too many sand scenes lol... I kind of feel like Denis could have mixed up some of the scenes on different planets with the dusty sandy scenes on Arrakis. During most of the first hour of the film, I was looking at desert sand scenes like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ROTFL!! 🤣 Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad thing per se, and it didn't detract from the film's greatness, but if I were Denis, I would have given the audience a bit of a break from the desert scenes a little sooner in. I would have given longer breaks in btwn the desert scenes at least 30 mins in lol.
I felt like Lea Sedoux's scenes were way too SHORT! She was like the Zendaya of Part 2 lol. I don't even think she had as much screen time as Zendaya had in Part 1 lol. And Chiiiiile...I wanted to see more of her interactions with Feyd. 👀 Their chemistry was hawwwwt.... 🥵 Austin and Lea had more sexual chemistry in their 2-minute scene together than Timmy and Zendaya had in the entire movie imo ROTFL 🤣 (SORRY Timdaya fans! 😅)
Tumblr media
Speaking of Feyd.... Denis didn't give us enough of him! I liked that he was somewhat of a complex villain. But I kind of feel like it would have been nice to have seen a bit more about his background (like, why did he kill his mother??🥴), or know what makes him tick. 🤔
I think it would have been nice to have seen longer scenes with Timmy and Austin together, but I haven't read the books, so maybe they only meet once and that's for the knife fight lol. 😅
It would have been nice to have seen more of Anya in this film, but she will more than likely have more of a role in Dune Messiah.
Overall.... Amazing film. 😊 I know I'm going to have to watch this movie at least a second time to really process everything.
OVERALL SCORE: 8/10
😁

Translated Excerpts from the Beijing Premiere of One and Only
To be on the big screen, does it feel like you've gotten to fulfill one of your dreams as an actor? Yibo: I think it is a very fortunate thing, for me at this time in my life, to be able to do a combination of things that I enjoy is a very happy thing. Actually, it reminds me of my childhood dream, of a passionate summer where at that time I enjoyed dance. I took part in dance classes during middle school vacation. I spent the entire break in the studio. Similar to Chen Shuo, I would go to class after class, dancing from 2PM to 10PM or so. Just like Chen Shuo, I never found it tiring, as if I couldn't feel tired while doing something that I enjoyed. After watching [the movie], there's the sense that Yibo is Shuoshuo, Shuoshuo is Yibo.
(To Liu Mintao, actress who plays Chen Shuo's mother) Give us your review on Yibo's performance. LMT: The first impression I got from Yibo is that he is quite shy, and quite introverted. He doesn't usually express himself, he's not the type to chat with you a lot. He's quite a thoughtful person, I think, because we haven't had a lot of interactions in private. This is the sense that I got. He's very diligent, and his eyes are full of--I think of something very pure/sincere. Actors--not just actors--I think it is something we all need, that it is something worth cherishing. Da Peng: Let me add something, whenever I see Shuoshuo, no matter what the scene is, his eyes sparkle like he has stars in his eyes. Some scenes we film altogether, like the scenes in Chen Shuo's home, we filmed them all at once, including the scene with Uncle. Because we have to create the set, so in actuality, Shuoshuo and his mother's first scene is the emotional scene that everyone likes, where his mother is singing and shining onstage, and Shuoshuo sees his mother's efforts for him and ends up crying. This was actually their first scene, so they hadn't yet filmed any of the scenes at home, so there was this challenge right from the get go. The performance that day--Yibo completed it in one take. He was able to express these sentiments right away, and exceeded our expectations. So one can imagine that he must have done a lot of work on his own prior to filming, thinking about this role, to understand what his experience must feel like in this scene. For that day I feel a bit apologetic, because it was quite a large scene, where onstage with his mother there were a lot of wedding guests. But once Shuoshuo came, he cleared it in one take. I felt as though it couldn't be this easy, that filming could go so smoothly, so I tried to find different reasons to refilm the scene, to get Chen Shuo to perform a few more times. Otherwise, if we managed to finish it in one take, I was afraid it might get to his head. (said jokingly) But actually the scene that ends up in the movie is from their first take. MC: So you ended up using the first take? Da Peng: Yes MC: Wow, let's give it up for Yibo. Of course, I believe that for Yibo to be able to grasp the emotion so well, must also be thanks to Mintao-jie's performance onstage (Yibo nods) LMT: The two of us hadn't interacted at that time. Because onstage I couldn't see him either. MC: So it is completely based on immersing yourself in the role. Da Peng: Don't people think they also seem like a mother-son pair? Audience: Yes! Da Peng: When I watched afterwards I felt that the casting of their roles really was great
Yibo: I think for the storyline between Chen Shuo and his mother, the part that moved me the most is when his mother says, "I don't dare watch." This moved me because my mother also doesn't dare to watch some of my competitions, so this line really struck me.
Yibo: Street dance gets divided into a lot of different styles. Breaking is something I am both familiar and unfamiliar with. Because when I first experienced street dance, I tried breaking but ended up giving it up because it was too difficult and I would end up with a lot of injuries, so went to hip hop. So this time when filming- One of the cast members interjects: Let me explain, because Yibo was injured while breakdancing, I don't think you can say this is giving up, rather he was forced to give it up because his knees were injured. Like this I don't think you could say that he gave up. Yibo: Ah…where was I? Oh yes, because when I was young I thought their moves were really cool, but because I was young and experienced injuries, it felt too difficult so I chose another style of dance. So this time I feel the greatest takeaway is getting to experience the dance that I enjoyed the most when I was young, getting to do this again I was very happy.
Yibo is asked to say some closing words: Yibo: Wow, you're asking someone who's not very good at speaking to give the closing statement. First, I'd like to thank everyone for their compliments. I also really cherish that summer. I have also had a similar time of passion/enthusiasm (Chinese title of the movie), when I was young, when I liked dance, I have also had a summer devoted to one thing, and that was dance. So it was very similar to filming One and Only. Like when Chen Shuo went to practice dance after finishing work, I also did the same after finishing school. Everyone in the cast worked well together because everyone loved dance, so worked hard together on this. So I am grateful to everyone, I enjoyed this time we had.

When I was in school, there seem to be a camp of two types of girls when it came to literary choices. You had the Twilight/vampire romance girlies and the Hunger Games/dystopian gals, and you would have thought these two groups were the two families from Romeo and Juliet. Yours truly was part of the Hunger Games camp, and middle-school me was obsessed. I’m talking book and movie premieres, Team Peeta shirts from Hot Topic, wearing a mocking jay pin publicly, the whole gambit. God forbid if you read Twilight, that poorly written, low-brow, dumb, vampire romance. We were the readers of dystopian fiction, which was superior because it made you FEEL things about capitalism, broken societies, being true to yourself, etc. etc. etc.
It’s been over a decade since 2008. To all my Twilight girlies, I would like to offer you my most sincere apologies. I should not have judged you so harshly.
Recently I watched Twilight for the very first time as an adult. A friend of mine came over for a painting/movie night, and Twilight was our featured film. I knew the memes, I knew roughly what the plot was, but I wasn’t ready for the experience that was to come.
So without further ado, I’d like to offer my thoughts and review on the 2008 masterpiece, Twilight. If you aren’t familiar with the Twilight story, go read a quick synopsis and then come back.
🌘So, did you like it?
I had an absolute blast watching this movie. Would I say it’s a good movie? Probably not. Did it age well? Nope. But it was delightfully cringey, as you had to suspend all believe of realism. You couldn’t take this movie too seriously, because this movie took ITSELF way too seriously. It’s like they cranked the drama/teen angst meter up to 100 and everything seems so life-or-death…even though the main characters, Bella and Edward, are 17 year old juniors (ok so Edward actually isn’t 17 because he’s an old vampire but you get what I’m saying). It was very much that kind of relationship where “they can’t even bear to be apart or they will DIE” oh no how tragic (I think we now call that co-dependency).
When I was 17, I sure as heck didn’t know what love was. But again, this story is based in absolute fantasy, not realism, and that’s the fun part. Oh to be swept off your feet by a mysterious, handsome, brooding vampire that you met in your biology class!
🌓Favorite part of the film?
The script for this movie is pretty bad, I’m not gonna lie, and that’s part of the charm. It’s so bad, that it’s kinda good. Here’s some of my favorite quotes:
“You better hold on tight, spider monkey." -Edward to Bella because he can jump really high and run really fast. I about peed my pants from laughing when Edward said this.
“This is the skin of a killer, Bella." -Edward to Bella because vampire skin *literally sparkles* in direct sunlight. Again, almost peed my pants.
I will say that I love Edward’s family, the Cullens, as a whole. This vampire family tries to cook a regular meal for Bella, Edward’s human girlfriend, and oh my heart. Vampires don’t cook because they don’t eat normal food; the Cullen family had never used the kitchen in their house. The fact that they would go out of their way and attempt to do something so foreign to them in order to make the human girlfriend feel comfortable? Um, wow that’s actually really sweet.
Also, shout out to Bella‘s dad, Charlie for actually trying to connect with his daughter. Bella and Charlie have a bit of an awkward and tense relationship but this doesn’t stop Charlie from trying to be a good dad. I will say that one of my other favorite scenes was when Bella asked her dad if he wanted to meet her boyfriend Edward… while he was cleaning his shotgun. When he said, “sure, send (your boyfriend) in” and loudly snapped his shotgun shut, I about lost it. What a dad move! A national treasure.
🌒Would you watch it again?
Under the right circumstances. I would need either anesthesia or a large sangria. If I ever showed this film to my children, it would be for a study of what not to do in a relationship. If your significant other says “I can’t live without you” when you’re 17…that’s some big creepy co-decency energy.
🌑Team Edward or Team Jacob?
Um Team Charlie all the way. Hands down the best and most sane character in this whole film. We love to see a dad do his best and love his daughter…even when she starts dating a super weird pale dude.
🌘Conclusion
Watching this film made me think about guilty pleasures. We all have them, and they all look different at unique stages of our life. One of my favorite guilty pleasures is watching Judge Judy. My 70 year-old grandmother used to watch the Bachelor. For a friend of mine, it’s those cheesy Hallmark Channel movies. Others enjoy vampire romance novels. Are these things high-quality and sophisticated? No. Are they of good taste? Meh. But they are meant to be enjoyed, and that’s the whole point.
Twilight is the same way. Is it good? Not really. But that doesn’t matter, because it’s a cringey/angsty teen fantasy that’s meant to be enjoyed.
You can be both a Twilight girlie and a Hunger Games gal, and still have a pretty darn good time 🖤

Spider Man: Across the SpiderVerse Review
I have not felt this compelled to put my thoughts about a movie out there into the world for a while. The last time I did so was before the pandemic and a lot in my life has happened since then but I love it when I finally decide to watch something from a never-ending backlog of movies, especially for animation which is probably one of my first loves.
So I lied. It’s a review of 2 films; Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse and its recent sequel Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse. Both from Sony pictures Animation, a studio which prior to me watching these 2 films, only released disappointing to bad films in my opinion (looking at you emoji movie). I finally felt compelled to watch them recently mainly to watch Across the spiderverse in theaters.
First, I’ll make my thoughts on Into the spiderverse relatively brief. It truly is a game changer of a film for the would of animated movies. Amazing that it won an Oscar.  The animation alone really pushed the boundaries of what the medium could do, and the story was well contextualized and wrapped up. I loved the nots and references to comics throughout the film. Miles’ growth throughout the first film is truly a masterclass of storytelling of a young teenager finding his place in the world and taking on new challenges in his life. In the meantime, working to develop better relations with his supportive parents and carve out his own version of Spiderman. This is probably the best use of the multiverse concept that I have seen so far in film. The animation styles between each spider hero is great at defining characteristics. I loved how they went in the direction of Spider-Gwen for this film, it makes her more bad ass for sure and more of a character than a tragic plot motive. Her scenes with Miles are also so cute (Put a pin in that we will get into that more later for the 2nd film). Mile’s relationships with the men in this film, his dad, Uncle Aaron (aka the Prowler), and Peter B Parker are great representations of mostly healthy male relationships that I feel like isn’t as well represented in media these days. Each one of them helps Miles evolve over the first film to come into his own with his powers and with his feelings and interpersonal relationships with people. Loved the involvement of Aunt May and Penni, Peter porker and Spider Noir. Wish we got to see more of them, which hopefully we will in Beyond the Spiderverse (Put a pin on that too). I also love the influence of hip hop and the urban influence of Brooklyn in this film, the sound track is fire. Honestly what are you waiting for please watch this film.
Ok time for the big kahuna; Across the Spiderverse. WOW. Just wow. Into the Spiderverse is amazing in its own right but wow was it kicked up a notch tenfold for Across the Spiderverse. Starting off easy, the animation in this film once again is PHENOMINAL. But one element that really stood out over the previous film, the use of Color Theory, especially with Gwen. Holy Cow they nailed it with expressing subtle emotions through out this film using color theory, every single frame in this film should be in the Louve, I’m deadass. I loved the introduction of Spider-India and Spider-Punk. Loved how Pavitr literally called out Miles and Gwen having a thing lol, also the use of his bracelets, similar to a type of toy, being used in his web slinging is such a fun touch. Hobie really be that surprise MVP, who was actually punk this whole time, probably is the only one Miles trusts at this point, who loves chaos and taking down the Miguel influenced spider verse society. Also, him calling Miles Peter Pan and GWENDY…fucking iconic lol. I wish we could have seen more of Peter B Parker but happy to see him embracing Dad life with his little anarchist baby Mayday, who also helps confirm that the spider powers can be genetically passed on.
Some other notes before I get to the gushing part of this whole ass review. I loved how Miles’ parents and Gwen’s Dad evolved over the course of this film. For Rio and Jeff, they had to learn not to be helicopter parents to Miles, while also coming to grips that he is becoming an adult and still worrying over their baby. The parallels between them and my parents are astounding and the conversations very similar to what I had with them growing up at that age. Also exhibited in Gwen’s Dad, him falling upon duty as a police officer when he discovers his own daughter is Spider woman, thinking she killed her buddy but then its actually his daughter, and he resorts to being an officer. She was wicked lucky Miguel and Jess were willing to allow her through the portal, which makes sense because she did not have a home to go back to.  Also I really enjoyed all the easter eggs and the meta commentary on what Cannon is and the idea that a spider person has to suffer in order to be a spider person; and Miles being like FUCK That I’m not an abnormality and imma save my Dad and do me. Which comes full circle with what Rio talked to him about the world being harsh against him and to know that family will always be there and to nurture that inner child. Miguel clearly is drinking his cool aid too much on maintaining cannon but will he remain the enemy until all the spider people turn against him? Spot turning out to be the guy Miles threw a bagel at from the lab escape in the first film is wild. Also Spot over the film slowly becoming more powerful and will probably do something really bad to mess up the multiverse. Hopefully Miles and family are safe from all this. Also the fact the spider that bit Miles came from Earth-42, and Miles G Morales is the Prowler in that dimension. There better be an epic fight sequence in the beginning of the film between those three. Curious to see if Miles G will be an antagonist or not along with Aaron.
However, what ultimately really made me fall for this film is the decision narratively to make Gwen a significant part of the story and the relationship between Gwen and Miles. I can’t help it in a sucker for teen angst and pining. But let’s start off about dear Gwen. Good lord I feel terrible for her. She was put through the ringer in this movie. She is brought up to almost/Basically co main lead in this movie. We really get a much more fleshed out backstory of hers, dealing with how her Blonde Peter Parker died and dealing with hiding her identity from her father while he is unknowingly hunting her down. She, along with Miles are both struggling with hiding their secret super hero identities to their parents, main difference being Miles told his alternate dimension Mother, while at the end of the film when Gwen gets banished by Miguel back to her universe, she is forced to confront her father. The Color theory used on Gwen to convey her true feelings that she doesn’t state in the film is such a genius decision and it creates some of the most visually striking images in the film. The colors blue used to express her sadness and loneliness and the color pink, to express her happiness in her surroundings was a brilliant idea. I also loved how her Earth was just filled with water colors it’s like a painting I love it. Throughout the film, we see her struggling with dealing with her shitty home life, dealing with the cannon knowledge about Miles, feeling the need to follow the cannon timelines, believing she will die if she deviates from the timeline and her father would die as well, while trying to protect Miles but also having the desire to see him. She’s dealing with so much and is really put in a rock and a hard place, that in the process of trying to protect Miles, she unintentionally betrays him (same can be said for the other spider people Miles made friends with besides Hobie). Could she have told him the truth sooner, probably, but I think the outcome would be similar. However, after finally communicating with her Dad, taking the leap of faith if you will, like Miles, she is able to get through to her Dad and he breaks the Cannon event of himself dying on duty by quitting being a cop. This gives her the resolve, along with Spider-Punk’s wicked helpful homemade dimension watch to start looking for Miles and go from leaving a band and distancing herself from everyone around her, to getting people together who know Miles to help find him, and of course take down Miguel and Spot. What a beautiful arc for her, which I believe is not over yet, she still has some work to do to make up with Miles in the next film. But she’ll do so, she down bad for him lol.
Speaking of which, what really gave me life in this movie was the relationship between Gwen and Miles. Lord it is oozing young puppy crush love and I’m so here for it. It was clear from the 1st film Miles was into Gwen, and its only solidified further a year and change out from then. I mean stating you want to go to Princeton for Quantum Physics and dimensional travel…like boy we know why because you want to see all the spider homies again, especially the girl 15 months older than you that you draw from memory filling up almost every page of her, and adding her to your graffiti mural where you got bit. Looking at better photos of the note book he even drew her dancing like a ballerina, he drew her fresh drip, including new sweaters and chain chokers, and he drew her eating ramen like MY BOY you’re in a crush deeper than the deepest cervices of the ocean, you have it down so bad for her. Meanwhile Gwen while being sad, managed to still keep the half-buzzed hair cut from the 1st movie because Miles liked it. She’s shown to be constantly thinking about him, including the beginning drum sequence which is “Trust by Megadeath” (Look at the lyrics also btw, they honestly do foreshadow Gwen and Miles relationship as it stands at the end of the film), and throughout her universe missing him the one person she considers a friend. Also, she printed out a selfie of the two of them and looks at it every time she goes out as spider woman. That photo might as well be her social security card she treasures it so much. The only reason she is interested in joining the spider society also is to literally see him, which she doesn’t get to do until she convinces Jess enough to do an assignment in his world. And after finding out about his cannon events and getting an important assignment to go after Spot and stop him from messing up the universes, one of the most important missions to save the whole universes, and being warned to stay away from him, what does she do???? Ports straight to his bedroom, peroidt. She basically said Imma risk the universe for Miles; like im sorry that love bitch. Anyways she finds grounded Miles and he shook clearly. Gwen immediately goes in for the hug, and Miles be short circuiting, and trying to hide everything in his room. Gwen looking at all his drawings of her and very sweetly being all like “I missed you too”, only to slyly get Miles out of the house. They are so carefree swinging through Brooklyn and finally feel like they are their true selves. The sky also has a pink hue. And then when they get to the bank tower, their upside down talk is just so precious and done beautifully. Everything from Gwen being like I miss talking to you and Miles being like we the same. Miles inching ever so close to her about to Touch her hand MY BOYYYYY. Gwen going into how the Gwens fall for spider man, sees his hand inch closer, and then gives a very pained look mentioning that it doesn’t end well. Miles being the emotionally intelligent guy he is, respectfully pulls back and is all like “there’s a first time for everything” she gives him that look, you know that look of like I’m falling for you look, and purposefully LEANS INTO HIM. GIRL. She soooo into him but holds herself back due to all the bs she dealing with behind the scenes. At the rooftop party for Jeff, these two talking on the water tower, Miles almost finds out about Gwen tracking Spot, she gets briefly mad but apologizes, and then these two are so awkward teens to the point of like confessing a crush for real, and im sorry Is he looking at her lips wow. But before anything happens the parents show up. Gwen fumbles the bag by going on first name basis, and Rio is like “found a sweater, dis you?”. The parents come on to hard so I just feel second hand embarrassment for the both of them. Gwen makes an excuse to leave due to her tracking Spot you know the guy trying to destroy everything. She wanna touch Miles so bad she goes for the awkward hand shake. Damn. And of course what does Miles do later, he follows her to Spots portal hopping location and sees the exchange of Jess and Gwen, but Gwen before she leaves, looks out to the water tower, all the while Miles is invisible Upside down a la the spiderman kiss position. I cant yall. Also Gwen freaking out over Miles in Mumbatthan, and being all like “your amazing” to him after he changes the cannon event. That was so sweet. Its so painful to see how the ending of this film plays out with the betrayal. And his final sad goodbye to Gwen. She decides to talk to his parents, while using his jacket to hide her gear a la girlfriend vibes, to tell them how much he loves them and that she gonna find him. She is so determined and falling in love with him its not even funny. What really sealed the deal that these two I think will be end game, The fact that she can spidey sense he’s in danger IN A DIFFERENT DIMENSION!!!!! Oh My god, this is also similar to the first film where she had that spidey sense to go to the visions academy. Like lord if that’s not love idk what is at this point. They will need to work out some feelings which I hope comes up earlier in Beyond the Spiderverse so we can get back to some wholesome moments before all chaos breaks loose and hopefully, they will be endgame, and still alive.
TLDR: I love both of these films, go watch them please and Sony pay your animators better
ITSV: 4/5

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) review
Tumblr media
Someone should call child services, as Kong uses a baby monkey as a weapon and flails him around like a whip, using the poor little fella to bash against incoming enemies. Granted the little chap is durable, but like….. I’m sorry, this movie is ridiculous. Like I can’t even!
Plot: Godzilla and the almighty Kong face a colossal threat hidden deep within the planet, challenging their very existence and the survival of the human race.
2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong holds a special place in my heart in that during COVID-19 it was one of the first and only films to come out during lockdown. I recall sitting in my living room suffering from high depression (I mean, who wasn’t at that time, am I right??) and I stuck on the Godzilla vs Kong film with low expectations……and I had the greatest time ever. By no means was it a masterpiece. It’s even far away from being a good film, but at that time when I was cinema-deprived and life was in a constant state of limbo, a big trashy Hollywood blockbuster with two massive CGI monsters beating the living crap of each other was exactly the entertainment I needed.
In cometh Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Naturally we’re no longer in a pandemic so the WOW factor is gone, and also Godzilla Minus One only recently came out reminding us that Godzilla can be sophisticated when need be. That being said, am I opposed to seeing some ridiculously over-the-top kaiju brawls for absolutely no other reason other than Hollywood wanting to throw money against the wall and seeing what happens? Yes. Look, from the set-up the whole thing doesn’t make sense in the first place. I get it is fantasy and suspension of disbelief is required, but it’s a giant walking nuclear power plant that holds the title of king of the monsters against a bloody monkeh. I don’t care how cool or likeable Kong is, if we’re being realistic he’d get smushed just by touching Godzilla. Like, ain’t that lizard boi radioactive?? Last time I checked radioactivity is pretty fatal. Kong should have developed multiple forms of cancer since the 2021 film, I’m just saying. But again, that’s if we’re thinking logically, however as we’ve learned from these MonsterVerse movies, logic isn’t a word that exists. So let’s enjoy the lizard and monkeh for what they are - bring it on!!
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is exactly what you expect it to be… in the last 30 minutes. The first hour and a half is actually a casual sequel to Kong: Skull Island, with Godzilla a fleeting cameo just getting up to random shenanigans, with every appearance lasting no longer than 5 seconds. I’m serious, Godzilla to this movie is like Scrat is to the Ice Age movies. If you recall the little saber-toothed squirrel hardly ever connects to the main plot-line of those films, and instead is only obsessed with getting his stupid acorn. Same with Godzilla, he fights random kaijus just cause. He takes naps in the Colosseum just cause. He eats nuclear plants for breakfast just cause. He turns Barbie-level pink just cause. His entire role in this movie is just cause. Otherwise this is through and through a King Kong movie. Not that I’m complaining, if you want to make a somewhat engaging and emotionally resonant narrative (as if this movie has a plot!), it’s easier to focus on Kong as he has the baggage of being lonely and wanting to find a home and more of his kind, so there’s something there to work with. So we spend most of the movie wit Kong as he explores Hollow Earth that’s discovered from the previous film, and I quite enjoyed all that. Does the movie need to be 2 hours long? Nope, as the whole Hollow Earth story-line is dragged out so much when in fact all that happens could have easily been told in the size of a short film. Essentially nothing much happens is what I’m saying. Like the whole thing is a set-up for the inevitable and highly anticipated final showdown that we’ve all paid for.
About the final showdown - it’s so dumb. I mean the whole movie is dumb, but the final battle breaks any last remaining realm of reason and turns into this crazy bonkers monsters v monsters smashy-bashy bonkers beat ‘em up, and it was absolutely fantastic! Again, I fully admit the stupidity of it all, but watching this movie’s finale in a crowded theatre with everyone cheering, laughing, clapping and howling alongside all the CGI madness that is thrown at our faces - it was awesome! I’d give the final 30 minutes a 10/10 score easily, as it is exactly what we want from a Godzilla and Kong movie. Godzilla spears Kong through a pyramid and then immediately follows that up with a suplex. That right there is cinematic genius!! The rest of the movie is fine and has its moments, but is just a meandering set-up for that ending.
This being a MonsterVerse movie naturally there are also some human characters that we are forced to care about. Like I give a f***, gimme me more lizard and monkeh!!! I want them here, and I want them now! To be fair the producers must have listened to the audience feedback as there is much less human stuff in this movie. There’s a useless sub-plot with Rebecca Hall and her adopted daughter that was so boring and generic and was the dullest part of the movie. Brian Tyree Henry and Dan Stevens are a delight though, providing some enjoyable comedic tongue in cheek, with Stevens especially excelling at the one-liner quips. Nice also to see Stevens teaming back up with director Adam Wingard, the two having previously worked on the wonderful indie thriller The Guest. Honestly if you have not seen The Guest you’re missing out big time - a delightful slice of action horror with a fantastic atmosphere that sucks you in with a dash of dry black comedy edge.
Speaking of Adam Wingard, he’s evidently a good match with these goofy Fast & Furious-level silly monster flicks. He directs the movie using a fun colourful visual palette, with some fantastic sci-fi set pieces, and Hollow Earth is reminiscent very much of a Jules Verne-type adventure locale, very much in the vain of a Journey to the Centre of the Earth, or a Mysterious Island. There’s also a strong 80’s retro vibe to the movie with the techno-synth music score from Junkie XL that had strong Thor: Ragnarok feels to it. I must say through all its stupidity, visually the film is really cinematic and looks awesome on the big screen.
I had a solid time with Godzilla x Kong, especially with those last 30 minutes. Satisfyingly entertaining blockbuster fast-food. It does get a while to get there, and also the movie is fit with so many plot holes and inconsistencies, and also it really did feel like the writers were making things up as they were going along, but I don’t care. This was never intended to be high calibre award worthy filmmaking. It’s only a monkeh, standing in front of a radioactive lizard, asking him to fight together. Really entertaining and super fun. Best part was when it was revealed that Kong could talk and screamed “it’s KONGIN TIME!!’
Overall score: 6/10

like ya’ll i’m a dylan girl thru and thru, and gorgeous zoey is the main star of this movie
but mia
ya’ll don’t sleep on mia isaac
i know the proper reviews have agreed with me, she is absolutely brilliant and powerful and and empowering, every scene was so strong and she deserves all the praise, all the awards, hands down
her character’s story where it related to real life events.. her trauma was so heartbreaking, and the ptsd scene on the stage really truly got to me and i honestly started tearing up. that was a full panic attack... i’ve lived through many, and it was captured so upsettingly well. mia conveys emotion so so well and i hope you love her as much as i did.
AND DUDE ----- THE LAST SCENE OF THE MOVIE WITH MIA WAS AHHHHHHHHHHHH MY FAVE PART OF THE WHOLE THIINNG
now...  zoey, wow, her characterisation was SPOT ON
she just gulped up that fame, actual fame whore
like i hated her but i loved her and but at the same time i was holding my breath for her white lie to be unfolded
and PHEW it was nuts
“shit gon be nuts” - dylan o’brien, 2022, twitter.
zoey is a phenomenal actress, she can play all sorts of dimensions, but danni was just something else, in a very good way
she was a crafty lil bitch and i give her kudos, to an extent, and then yes she deserved to be #cancelled over and over again, never coming back from that one
i was shaking my head at her the whole time like..... honey you’re making it so obvi that you are not traumatised. you just want those likes, you just want that @WEEDBOIIICOLIN so bad.
also SHOUT OUT to the nightmares she was having, and her own personal haunting trauma with the green coat guy. i loved that continuity and how it built her guilt over and over again.
especially with the reveal.. i saw it coming at the last second, but was still surprised when you saw who it really was that was haunting her.
her hampster tho being the soul reason for her lie, giving her the idea, that was iconic. you go hamster. they also had similar hair???
her style was wild, very tik tok, very ‘on trend’ thank you quinn for crafting this crazy girl
zoey you need to be given like 150 gold stars right now, girl.

DYLAN O’BRIEN’S FUCKING MOANING WILL LIVE IN MY HEAD RENT FREE FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE AND I NEED IT ON ACTUAL FUCKIGN REPLAY RIGHT NOW THIS IS NOT A DRILL
his ****** game is also STRONG

it doesn’t last long but it was literally the set up for every dylan smut scene in fan fic okay
HIS WORDING WOOWWOWOWOWEVNBKJGE]
I AM STILL DEEEAASDDDDDDDD
ask @ slutobrien because i was messaging her the whole time and i was going craazzyyyyy
my fave is “youre so tight”
fuck thats dylan fan fic
in a good way.. a very, very, good way
he also says that he’ll protect her in a very sensual way and yes i believed it i still do i also need it RIGHT NOW.
but yes okay, thank you quinn once again for choosing this god of a man to portray this idiot of a man
other things i super loved: - the running jokes with kendall jenner loooool - quinn’s cameo!!!!!!!!!!! i squealed, like a lil piggy - the cinematography?!!?!!??! so good  - the support group hanging out together was too cute for words  - special shout out to NADIA for her portrayal of harper!!!!! the villain (?) that we really needed ((((( but like was danni really the villain the whole time and was harper the hero??? hmmmm????)))))) - still love mia isaac - MY 2ND FAVE PART THOOO ,....... OMGG... was when colin said some weird shit and harper was like “you’re from maine” and dylan puts his real voice on for a short moment since colin gets called out for his fakeness HAHAHA too good
Overall, NOT OKAY was a very good, eye-opening, funny film. It really makes you look at the craziness and toxicity that social media carries. It shows you how it can change people, literally, and the lengths they will go to to get those extra followers or those extra likes. Social media can be so dangerous. Watching Mia’s character get absolutely shit over for having a ptsd panic attack, saying she was being a fake victim.. that’s real, unfortunately. It happens so often. Dylan and Zoey have only recently done interviews where they explain that the truth is sometimes never believed, that the lies circulating gets the better of them and puts out negative untrue vibes.
This movie HAD to be made. And I am so glad that Quinn did it in such a captivating way.
But I think that there is also another important point made from this movie......
What I have learnt is that it is indeed.. okay... to not be okay. Don’t hide if you’re in pain, because it’s very most likely that the person next to you is also not okay.
OKAY THAT’S MY REVIEW BYE

Movies I Watched in February
Once upon a time I only watched 3 movies a year and all of them were bad. Then I learned about Real Culture (TM), and now my life is better.
mini movie reviews from January
February's movies:
Tumblr media
mini reviews:
Youth in Fury (1960): Masahiro Shinoda is one of my favorite directors, but I prefer his experimental stuff. Grade: C
Cría Cuervos (1976): A slightly surreal Spanish classic about childhood trauma and how we misinterpret/misremember our own experiences. Makes you feel exactly like you're back in the saddest moment of your own childhood, which, honestly, blows. Do not recommend. Grade: C
Tumblr media
Upgraded (2024): This is not a romcom. This is a movie about a woman achieving her career goals, and a guy happens to be in like 30 minutes of it. I thought I was watching for Archie Renaux, but my bi soul must stan Camila Mendes. Grade: B
Dorian Gray (2009): Ben Barnes stars as Dorian Gray. He is very pretty, and that's really all I have to say about it. Grade: B
Tumblr media
Viva Cuba (2005): My first Cuban film! I thought, "If I were a Spanish teacher, I'd show this to my students," but oops all the reviews online are from kids who had to watch this in class and hated it because everything that happens to you at school sucks, including all movies, but I really liked it actually. Grade: B+
Saltburn (2023): You all don't talk enough about what unironically classist conservative bullshit this movie is. Read or watch anything that inspired it instead. Grade: a middle finger
The Men of Tread on the Tiger's Tail (1945): A Kurosawa film. This was set where I used to live in Japan and I didn't know until I watched it. Wild. Grade: A
Death of a Cyclist (1955): Spanish film. One of those stories that feels like you know it already because now the narrative is a classic. Grade: A.
The Bodyguard (1992): A big dumb blond man falls for Whitney Houston?? I love this???? I love him? I love her? He eats a nectarine while beating the shit out of another man? It's a mess and I swooned and I love it!!! We don't make romance films like this anymore (see: Upgrade). Grade: A+
Tumblr media
The Executioner (1963): Takes place during Franco's Spain. A look at a reluctant executioner that feels, wow, oomph, very very relevant to a post-COVID world. Heavy themes with light storytelling. I REALLY liked this. Grade: A+
The Two Towers/The Return of the King: You don't need me to review LoTR.
Double Suicide (1969): Masahiro Shinoda, you dirty dog, you did it again. I ^%$^*$%^*ing loved this. Wild, experimental film that combines Japanese theater with cinema. It made me feel more alive for having seen it. Grade: A+
Tumblr media
p.s. ignore the numbering of the list. tumblr formatting is a butt.
Going Forward:
I really loved the Japanese New Wave and Spanish films I saw this month. Now I want to see more experimental Japanese stuff, dive into Indian cinema, and watch more swoony romantic movies that might get close to making me feel the way The Bodyguard did (like I had injected the best parts of AO3 directly into my veins). I also want to find where the cinematic lesbians are.
Onwards!

dystopian series that you have an extremely difficult relationship with - and worse, his character doesn't even get a happy ending
haha me too. He has the best character. I remember watching Catching Fire for the first time without knowing much. I had seen the first film, which I thought was so-so. So I was already bored at the cinema when he appeared, he suddenly became the most interesting character (I didn't even know anything about Finnick, I thought he was going to turn out to be a villain who would kill Peeta, I was already rooting for him hahaha), he left me intrigued, who is this guy? Of course he turned out to be incredible, a true hero. I only went to see the other films because of him. After finding out that he had scenes that didn't even make it into the film, it left me disappointed. I can understand, he managed to have chemistry with Katiniss, which the other male characters didn't have. He was better than the actors who played Peeta and Gale. Finnick was better than everyone.
Jess once posted an article about Finnick being the best character, I have to dig it up and reblog it.
I read the books first and I remember exactly where I was when Finnick made an entrance, that is how impactful he was. My most favourite character is Johanna actually, bc it tends to be female characters that are my faves, mostly (and she didn't get a proper ending either, like I once looked her up on the wiki and it said "it is presumed she went back to her district", wow, what a wonderful trilogy!), but Finnick is right behind her. So bc Mockingjay made me want to throw my kindle against the wall (sometimes I go on Goodreads and read one and two star reviews for it, you know, for therapy), I never bothered with the films, so it wasn't until I became a the Sam Claflin fan that I am now in 2020 that I watched them--well, the ones he's in, and that was only for his scenes and I fast-forwarded the rest. I don't know anything about what went on behind the scenes, but I was surprised at how little he appears in the two Mockingjays, somehow I expected him to have more screentime. And I will keep saying it, the films should have fixed Suzanne's mistake and let him live, at least then they'd have something going for them, compared to the books. We know that is a change that the majority of the audience would have loved!

i watched When Evil Lurks (2023) yesterday and I have thoughts! also this is literally just my letterboxd review copy and pasted with a bit more detail lol
spoilers!! ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️
first of all, I am not the biggest possession horror fan. It's not my thing. But wow I was actually so into this movie I completely forgot about it being a possession movie! It was sort of a mix between zombie/disease and possession which was interesting. The very first Rotten we see is hard to look at, not normally a sight you think of when someone is possessed. Usually these movies tend to be more bone-cracking, spine breaking, unnatural bending and scary voices. Seeing the "demon"/evil manifest physically with bodily fluids and boils and rotting flesh made my stomach turn a bit which was awesome!
Secondly, I admit I'm very partial to sibling dynamics in movies, I love my siblings and I would die for them. The only people I would want to be in this apocalyptic-end-of-days situation with would be my siblings and my mom. I think the film did a great job bringing to life that tie between family, that you would do anything to protect them even if it means leaving your entire life behind including people who may be close but not willing to believe you (the ex wife and new husband). Also I couldn't help but compare them a bit to mario and luigi in my head but I blame that on me watching the Mario movie right before this 😅.
Jaime (Jimi) and Pedro are fun contrasting personalities in the scenario they get put into. Their priorities are different and even the belief they have is split, while pedro is more sure about the Rotten, Jaime is so doubtful he can't even admit if what they saw was real and that leads to problems with everyone else believing them. He's seen as the "good" brother so of course if he's saying he isn't sure of what they see, then all the other characters would believe him over Pedro, the "bad" brother with a troubled past. One of the things I loved about it was that Jaime never waivers in his faith in Pedro, he may not be sure of the Rotten/evil but he always trusts fully in his brother.
Pedro does get on my nerves with some of his choices but cmon would it be a horror movie if you weren't mad at some character for making stupid decisions? The desperation that seeps from the actor (Ezequiel Rodriguez) is so palpable that it brings out sympathy for him, he may be dumb but he's trying his best okay?
The whole story with the autistic son was a little weird and I know everyone's reviews of this say it's ableist but I saw it in a different light. The Cleaner says the demon can't figure out the minds of autistic people, get stuck in their bodies and that helps them from fully becoming possessed. To Me it feels like the opposite of what movies would usually do in where the son would be autistic BECAUSE of the demon, whereas in this movie he is "normal" when the demon takes over. It isn't a cure, it isn't saying autistic people have evil in them that needs to be fixed, but that is something that people have said for a long time and tbh its probably still a thing idiots believe in. it's interesting to see that his autism actually kept him safe for as long as it did.
Let's talk about the kills! When the wife of the landowner whacks into him with the axe, I was caught so off guard, same with the dog attack on the little girl. oh god, the throwing up of the hair and necklace by the son got to me, I probably shouldn't have been eating while watching this. This may sound weird but I LOVED the scene of the mom eating her son's brains as she's walking alongside the car Jimi is in.
The movie was so bleak and nihilistic that I felt the need to repent so this doesn't happen in real life. I wish it could have expanded a bit more on the universe, some of the characters and the disease/possession but for pacing reasons I think they did a solid job of dropping enough hints to fill in information. I love foreign horror movies and Argentina you are on my watchlist now, i enjoyed this and I think its definitely worth a watch!
Be warned there are animal and child deaths in this movie so know your triggers. It has English subtitles that aren't 100% accurate so it can get a little confusing sometimes, just pay close attention and if you want more insight the reddit threads on this movie are so great.

STREAMERS AU STREAMERS AU STREAM ERS A U ????????
yeah streamers au!!!!! :D i'm thinking all of them also upload their own videos on youtube too, but some originated as streamers and some as youtubers (more streamer au hcs under!!)
like i said in the other post, i think zelda would be analogous to someone like pokimane or valkyrae, and does variety/just talking streams. i don't think she would take advantage of or even be aware of her simps/e-girlism, she's actually very sweet and a just bit naive :'>. she probably already collaborates a lot with urbosa, and has on done a video or two with mipha. i would say she probably started off streaming first and then eventually starting doing youtube to post her vods, then make her own videos
mipha would kinda be like the qtcinderella and urbosa would be like. corpsehusband lowk ☝️😳 mipha does a lot of cutesy stuff like acnh and stardew valley playthroughs, maybe cooking & baking videos, and also like lifestyle videos like GRWM or 'day in the life' vlogs. her first video was a first aid video because she wanted to be a pediatrician when she was younger 🥺 urbosa started off as a youtuber and is one of those like old legendary youtubers who's still around so she's seen the rise and fall of the internet fr. she's very wise and she's zelda's favorite youtuber growing up, role model, and mentor 🥺 mipha probably also watched some of urbosa's videos growing up and cites urbosa as one of her inspirations when she started her own youtube channel :)
revali absolutely started off as a streamer but he excels as a youtuber, as expected. he does a lot of speedrun or challenge streams/videos of video games and i lowkey think that he has beaten quite a few speedrun records, only bested by link who he has an ongoing rivalry with because they keep beating each other's records. revali mostly does stream highlight videos, but every once in a while he'll do a fun little collab video with someone else or on the rare occasion, a vlog or a grwm 😧 someone asked him how he keeps his hair so nice on stream and he was so proud he ended up making a whole video about his haircare routine, what products he uses, etc HAHAHA
link is definitely the type of guy who made dumb little videos as a kid but eventually evolved into a full-fledged content creator with high quality videos and excellent ideas. he definitely does a lot of nintendo game videos (people adore his acnh playthrough series and his collabs with mipha 🥺), but i think he would also upload a lot of like. scenic videos of places he's traveled to or hiked at because he's pretty good at filming and editing. link def found his love for streaming and speedrunning on accident by, get this— watching one of revali's streams 😳😳😳 but he forgets that it was by revali 😭 link is like, This looks fun I want to try, so he does and is actually really good at it. so he ends up streaming the same exact games that revali did and beating his records, and revali would get pissed that his records were getting broken, and thus the rivalry was born!
what daruk does as a streamer or youtube still escapes me though like i just don't know what he would do. i can't even see him streaming KDJHFKJD like what would he do? maybe make reviews videos about old gaming systems, retro games, or reviews on his favorite restaurants or something LOL feel free to offer any ideas for him bc i'm lost lowkey
my brain is stewing with ideas for growing sexual tension between streamers revalink...... imagine them slowly starting to do collab streams together........ collab videos........ the champions going to twitchcon and doing a panel...... revalink meeting irl right before twitchcon because champion meetup and not knowing what to say because wow they're even more attractive irl....... revalink sexual tension in the airbnb all the champions are staying at because link got out of the shower with only a towel wrapped around his waist because he forgot his clothes and revali's eyes bulging out of his head 😭 UGH I THINK I MIGHT WRITE THIS AS AN ACTUAL AU HAHAHAHA

So back in June I watched all the Ghostbusters films cause it was the anniversary of the original movie and I thought I'd do a quick bullet point review since it's been a bit since I watched them all together.
Ghostbusters (1984)
It's still a classic. Has memorable moments that will live on.
Fun scenes. Going after Slimer is always silly and chaotic.
Peter Venkman is a rough. I actually had a person tell me that Venkman is the reason why they never watched the first movie, and I don't blame them.
Wish there was a bit more build up to the confrontation with Gozer. Would be neat if they kept uncovering clues rather than just the moment they figured it out in the jail cell.
Ghostbusters II (1989)
I don't know why people dunk on this movie, it's great!
You can tell the cast and crew are having more fun and things are a bit more fleshed out.
Venkman actually has some good character growth and is not a total creep!
I actually like the build up to the climax on this one. Throughout the movie, there's a focus on the slime buildup in the city and the flow of the story feels good.
Some fun light scares.
I kinda don't like the whole "the ghosts just stop showing up" thing. It's a trope specifically for this franchise that's not really explained. Just "yeah nothing happened between the movies and people think, we're frauds again! Gotta do it all over again!"
Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016)
This movie gets a lot of undeserved hate thrown towards it for being the female lead reboot. A bunch of misogynist trolls threw a fit and never gave it a shot the moment it was announced.
The cast was great tbh. Everyone seemed to gel with one another.
Chris Hemsworth plays a himbo and we see him with his shirt off.
I really like the main antagonist in this movie. I think his character could have been fleshed out a bit more, but still fun idea.
The gear looks really cool in this movie.
Some scenes do keep going a bit too long and has like not good Saturday Night Live skit energy. I think they relied a bit too much on improv.
How the fuck is Chris Hemsworth the funniest motherfucker alive and why is he so cute?
There's a teeny tiny bit a queerness in this story, but I also feel like there's themes of found family going on here too and I like that.
Chris Hemsworth plays a himbo and we see him with his shirt off.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Trailers do this movie a disservice by making it feel like it's going for a Stranger Things feel, kinda relying a bit too much on nostalgia or even doing the "wow kids these days." It just felt like they didn't have any confidence on the movie itself when marketing this tbh.
The tone is a bit more serious, but honestly I'm fine with it. Still has some funny moments, but it's leaning more into the horror part a bit more.
Watching Phoebe learn more about her grandfather is honestly fun. And this movie does a great job with handing things off to a new generation in a way that doesn't feel like it's disingenuous.
Literally cried at the end. Honestly that ending felt wonderful and it felt like a good tribute to Harold Ramis.
I don't know why, but my first watch of this last year wasn't as good as the second watch this year. I don't know what happened. But I remember the first time I watched this and felt like it was just ok but not my favorite. Maybe it was just a bit of frustration that the sequel to Answer the Call got cancelled before it could even get into full production.
I appreciate the movie using some practical effects. There are just certain elements that you can't mess with in Ghostbusters movie and they nailed it.
Muncher is my least favorite ghost tbh. Idk, there are people who love Muncher and I do like the tardigrade inspired design, but idk, they didn't appeal to me like the other ghosts did.
