I don't know why but art nouveau is DRASTICALLY underrated. It makes me so mad.
Like:
People get art nouveau confused with art deco CONSTANTLY but they are very clearly not the same thing
Art nouveau is luscious and sexy. It's curves and swirls and vegetal forms. Art deco is squares and diamonds. They look very different!!! Stop labeling art deco as "nouveau" ahhhhhh!!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another good example of like....famously Art Nouveau vs Art Deco is Mucha vs Erté:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even mucha's less stylized art still doesn't look deco! You see:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
People are obsessed with mid century modern and like, real MCM is good in limited quantities but frankly you only like it because neo-mcm is flat pack ready and that's all companies offer now.
🙅🏽‍♀️🙅🏽‍♀️🙅🏽‍♀️🙅🏽‍♀️ just say no to mid-centuries of things. We demand century and millennium ending aesthetics ONLY. Y2K. La Belle Epoque. The world is full of beauty in endings and beginnings!!!!
WHY DO RESTORATION AND DECOR COMPANIES NOT OFFER MORE NOUVEAU THEMED ITEMS???? AN AFFRONT TO ME PERSONALLY. I want to buy art nouveau furniture appliques and overlays to make everything amazing. No one sells good swirly nonsense. Infuriating.
I do LIKE art deco I'm just forever mad everyone mislabels it as art nouveau.

Ok so, back from work and finally had a chance to rewatch the episode and do my thoughts about it not that I haven't practically said it all in reblogs already lol
Neo, baby, I love you... But it was honestly so disrespectful of you to change into Penny while fighting Ruby???? WTH! I know when I started watching this show I basically gave RT full permision to rip my heart apart, but do they have to take every chance they get to do it? The fuck?!
Honestly in love with the Wonderland aesthetic of this volume <3 which is funny because I'm not actually a fan of Alice in wonderland lol.
But like... It's so pretty???? Also it's exacto what the girls need right now. Can't wait for the character development this volume.
Ruby making alies and friends by being kind and helpful is always one of my favorite things honestly. We need more Rubys in the world.
Remember when Weiss was considered the most annoying character in the show? God following her journey is just so rewarding! I love her so much!
Seriously that scene of Weiss cheering lives rent free in my mind now lol precious little bean<3
I thought it would take maybe two or three chapters to have team RWBY all together, but I'm happy it was so fast! Specially with such a small volume, now it's time for adventure!
Yang being upset that everyone is there because she just assumed she had died 😭 baby no!!!
Ruby's "if you thought we wouldn't come for you, you forget who raised me" is now top-10 moments of the show for me 🥹 perfection in every way
The tackle-hug 😭😭😭 I can't!!!! I'm never gonna grow tired of watching it!!!!
Also that's the SOFTEST "Yang" that Arryn Zech has ever said and I will always thank her for her work! I've been fed!
Tumblr media
I have this weird feeling theory/idea that the weather in Wonderland is affected by the girls' emotions... Like, it literally started raining both when Ruby and Weiss started crying, while it goth Sunny when Blake expressed positive thoughts. O feel like it's no coincidence.
Also I can't stop thinking about how Oscar and Ozpin talked about The girl who fell through the world being about a girl who failed to learn from her mistakes and I'm sooooo excited to see how this is gonna play for the girls!
Like... We've gotten two fallen kingdoms in big battles that ended up with Penny dying and Cinder victorious and I think it's interesting.
Weiss having to tell everyone about Penny and Ruby just dropping to the ground 😭 I'm seriously never forgiving RT for doing that to my girl again.
Again: the new opening fucks! Which is not new and not surprising, but God sometimes I forget how much I love Casey's voice and just the Williams' talent in general <3
Also all the depressed Ruby shots in the opening are doing things to my heart and I don't like it! Let Ruby be happy 😭😭 with her girlfriend Penny
Also can I just say that I feel so proud about seeing Arryn Troche in the credits? 🥹 They deserve it so much!!!
I think that's all I can think... Now I'm gonna go keep rewatching the chapter <3

GIRLBOSS TOURNEY ROUND ONE: I SEE KNOW DIFFERENCE BETWIXT THESE FASHIONABLE LIGHT-HAIRED JAPANESE HIGH SCHOOLERS WHO WEAR THEIR HAIR IN PIGTAILS AND UNDERGO DRAMATIC TRANSFORMATIONS
Select which one you think is GIRLBOSSIER, i.e., which one is the better girlboss
Propaganda
Junko Enoshima:
She's the best at Everything and she decided she wanted to watch the world burn so she did; Literally ended the world by recruiting a group of people to cause the apocalypse for her while she fucked off to girlboss a killing game. We do stan.
Usagi Tsukino:
Okay Usagi is THE og girlboss !! She's the leader of the very first girlboss squad (literally! Sailor Moon was the first magical girl manga/anime to have a team of magical girls rather than just one solo). And magical girls are the definition of girlboss, they're superheroes that are made to appeal specifically to little girls and completely embrace the girly girl aesthetic and marry it with badass-ness and fighting. Also even though she's kind of the og girlboss, Usagi actually has a really interesting hero's journey, she starts off completely terrified and overwhelmed by the enormity of the role that's been put on her shoulders, she just wants to be a normal girl, and it's only over the seasons that she grows into it and eventually becomes Neo Queen Serenity the leader of future tokyo (that's girl boss in the literal sense!!)

The Steam Next Fest for June 2023 is live, so here's some potential game demos to check out this weekend!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sea of Stars | Press Kit
Turn-based RPG Sea of Stars offers a pretty polished looking package, using dynamic lighting to shade and light detailed pixel landscapes that offer a surprising amount of verticality and traversal options, inhabited by denizens animated with a delightful amount of character. In combat too, the game adds a surprising bit of interactivity to the turn-based combat with the option to react in real time to boost damage output or minimize incoming damage on top of the strategic "locks" and "combo" systems. What we've seen so far reflects the game studio's mission of "retro aesthetics, modern game design", with Sea of Stars building upon the traditional turn-based RPG formula to give it that little something extra.
And of course, it has fishing. The game is set to release August 29th, 2023.
Sea of Stars is a turn-based RPG inspired by the classics. It tells the story of two Children of the Solstice who will combine the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic, the only force capable of fending off the monstrous creations of the evil alchemist known as The Fleshmancer.

In Stars and Time | Website/Press Kit
RPGmaker-style time loop adventure In Stars and Time combines rock-paper-scissors-inspired turn based combat with plentiful party banter, creating a fun fantasy world to save from freezing time and capturing the feeling of having a bunch of friends all repeating the same phrase on Discord. This lightheartedness may be needed, if the crushing time loop shenanigans ahead are what they sound like.
But what seems like a handy trick to ensure victory quickly begins to weigh on Siffrin as he experiences the loop over and over with no end in sight. Unwilling to open up to their friends and companions, and with the literal weight of the world on their shoulders, can Siffrin find a way to break the loop before it breaks him?

El Paso, Elsewhere | El Paso, Elsewhere Is A Supernatural Take On Max Payne Shooting To Its Own Rhythm by Kurt Indovina for Gamespot
There's no dancing around it: El Paso, Elsewhere, the new action game from Strange Scaffold, is an unabashed homage to the 2001 seminal pulp-noir action classic Max Payne. It's an obvious influence that writer, director, and voice actor Xalavier Nelson Jr. isn't shying away from, but is hoping to elevate for a modern audience. During my hands-on preview of the game, he told me, "I'm not interested in recreating Max Payne; I'm interested in seeing what Max Payne could be next." And for eclectic developer Strange Scaffold, that means a supernatural neo-noir blood-stained journey through a dimension-shifting motel to stop the world from being overrun by vampires.... It's a sentiment that can be heard in the dialogue of El Paso, Elsewhere. A mantra that rings true to the studio's preceding outings in the medium: "So let's take it from the top, like a jazz standard, played in our own time, as loud as we dare," all of which is intersected with the sounds of guns being loaded, and hammers being cocked. It feels like Strange Scaffold is playing to the beat of its own gunfire with El Paso, Elsewhere. We'll have to wait and see how it all jams out when it releases in Fall 2023 for PC and Xbox Series X|S.

Loddlenaut | Press Kit
A relaxing yet satisfying game about cleaning a polluted ocean planet and taking care of the axolotl-like alien Loddles, Loddlenaut is a thesis-project-turned-commercial-release estimated to drop on Steam in 2023. Loddlenaut has you experiencing the satisfaction of blasting away grime and picking up garbage like gameplay out of something like PowerWash Simulator, but with a more relaxed style that streamlines cleaning and resource management in little ways. And the occasional cute swimming potato!
Loddlenaut takes inspiration from early-2000s pet-sims like Tamagotchi and the Chao Garden as well as more recent aquatic games like Subnautica and ABZÛ.

do you have any theories on the new nct u 2023? i feel like there was so much lore involved this time around
Hey, sorry for the long wait but here's what I can find.. and it's a long one
Ngl I've always had the impression that the lore in the Neos' universe was somewhat dead...? This year? But from what I noticed, yes they used their assigned Neo Number on the timeline.
Tumblr media
The Neos taking pictures in different places worldwide (somewhat) actually could strengthen the idea that they have entered the Reality and are expanding their universe. In 2020-2021, they were in the process of doing it and, this year is pretty much like the peak of their plan; hence called Golden Age. But what's unfortunate is that there aren't any bits that help that idea... which is why I am actually unsure of this theory. For example, in 2021 we had illustrations of their machines but now the concept pictures are just... normal. ESPECIALLY contents such as YearDream videos or NCTmentaries... it's all pretty vague. Album-wise, I think it's interesting that they are called Archiving and Collecting, it's like they are keeping memories or perhaps 'documentations' (in a scientific way) of their mission and what stage they are in. It's really odd that they call it Golden Age yet it's not that grand...
MV
MV and Archiving videos, each one of them has very different visuals and aesthetics. I think that there aren't any lore conclusions drawn from those because I see them mostly for stylistic purposes. There isn't a clear plot going on. One thing for sure Baggy Jeans was in the Dream world, many irregular stuff happening. The unit choice itself, the first NCT U unit, perhaps could mean a new beginning.
Though I do have a sliver of thoughts for Golden Age MV. The overall song sounds hopeful and 'inspiring' to an extent, all the Neos gathering. In the beginning, we have a droplet of water, Ether, so they are connecting. However, as a deranged theorist, I thought there were some slightly suspicious scenes and an underlying meaning behind all of it.
First of all, some members have their keys with their NeoNumber assigned (I saw a theory tweet from some time and OP added the numbers... actually that's not how it works). The keys belong to each one of them though not everyone's shown. Xiaojun's 08, Jungwoo's 05, and Ten's 10. But it's weird how Ten and Jungwoo joined Jaehyun to burn the keys. It is also odd that it is in the shape of an old key with a wooden keyring, it's not 'Neo'. I still don't know what the key truly means, what is it supposed to open? Perhaps for the archiving files? Or is it for a door? One key didn't have a keyring (Jaemin found it?) and Mark took it and showed it to the others? Why were Jaehyun, Ten, and Jungwoo burning the chair along with the keys? Are they letting go of something? Perhaps the past because they are moving on to a new universe, a new chapter?
(Another thought) Knowing Jaehyun and Ten's background there must be something. Doyoung was chosen as a special character as of 2021, Xiaojun could become one too now since he was the only one in the water (which I still don't know the reason for.. perhaps something to do with Ether too?). There were many destructions, these were used in BOSS' MV to show the empty and depressing Real World, unlike the Dream World where anything is possible. Are the destroyed structures a sign of them restarting something new? Or is it something bad? One last thing, Red Lights
Tumblr media
It isn't just any red light. I tend to go crazy with hints of (round) red lights because of their meaning. Back then, red lighting in the Neo world was used to represent them being in a dream, but this one is round... is there a villainous character present? Or is it a reach?
So what is truly happening in the lore? Is it all hopeful and positive?
End of post, I'm very sorry for throwing in so many questions but essentially I am still unsure of these ideas I have. I am rather skeptical with what I have because before this, the lore was vague to me.
So I hope this helps you :")
And I know with all of this I could've written a different lengthy post but I pretty much didn't think things through while writing 😅... have this as my official theory and thoughts post for NCT2023.

2023 Year End List - #6
Tumblr media
Red Moon In Venus - Kali Uchis
Main genres: Neo-Soul, Contemporary R&B, Psychedelic Soul
A decent sampling of: Synth Funk, Smooth Soul
Coming out as a Kali Uchis stan.
But for real, the Colombian American singer/songwriter seems to be the one artist that music hipsters, the English mainstream(ish), and the Hispanic mainstream can all collectively agree upon. Part of this is most definitely owed to Kali's versatility as an artist, with a primary basis of sound rooted in R&B (particularly neo-soul) but regularly dipping her toes into the waters of reggaetón, hip hop, bolero, and afrobeats.
Kali is also a definite lover of retro chic, given her clear appreciation for mid 20th century easy-listening pop and old Hollywood glamour. She cites artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Celia Cruz, and Curtis Mayfield as some of her biggest influences. At the same time, she modernizes these influences and aesthetics with a post-sexual revolution ethos of overpowering feminine-centred eroticism and fiercely wielded confidence and self-love.
Her voice is pleasant, mature, and strikingly womanly, in that same kind of way when you first discover as a child the sensation of being struck by the awe-inspiring beauty of a grown woman. Even as a gay man, I can confidently say that I think this is a sort of universal childhood experience, right?
Actually, I think a lot of Kali Uchis' success as an artist can be attributed to just how likable her musical persona is. I think that deep down, many of us want to be a Kali - completely liberated, in touch with our sensuality, and going through life as a warm and confident optimist. She makes music that isn't just well-written; it makes you feel good about life.
After making a big splash with her stellar 2018 LP Isolation and following it up with the success of 2020's Sin Miedo which was more invested in her Latin American roots and corresponding following, I was very curious to see where she would take things next with her career.
In the end, as it would turn out, Kali Uchis' 2023 record didn't really amount to anything that surprising. Instead, we were treated to a progression and evolution in her sound that feels very natural to her, culminating in an album that makes good on the typical promises of a Kali Uchis project.
That is to say, Red Moon In Venus exists in a rose-tinted world bedecked with lush palm trees and populated by curvaceous mermaids. The record is a creamy cocktail of smooth and funky soul jams with the sweet taste of cinnamon kisses and strawberry wine. A true musical oasis of the richest fruits.
Kali really is at the top of her game here. Everything is a subtle improvement on what already mostly worked for her on past projects, with a little more psychedelic flavour added into the mix, resulting in a final product that just sounds and feels really gorgeous and summery to listen to. Not all great music has to be challenging; this just does incredibly well at what it is already comfortable doing.
The record's first song proper is the lead single "I Wish You Roses", a beautiful parting gift to an ex-lover she holds no grudge towards. Petals flutter past the mind's eye as the world of this neo-soul paean springs to life with all the shades of a summer's rainbow. This song is a soft sigh of relief, heard quite vividly in the actual noticeable sighing melodies of those psychedelic keyboards in the chorus. A very classy song, expressing a sentiment not nearly heard often enough in most music about breakups.
"All Mine" is a lights off "wah-wah" slow jam describing a greedy lover's fantasy of having someone completely to themselves. The sound of the passionate id taking over the superego's domain.
Fans of the big city pop explosion that happened on the internet with the surge of Mariya Takeuchi's "Plastic Love" a few years ago may get a lot of mileage out of "Endlessly", a synth funk track that captures a similar kind of metropolitan utopianism. Kali really knows how to bring the kind of riding-passenger-in-a-red-convertible energy that a track like this one needs to really all come together.
"Moral Conscience", in mild contrast to "I Wish You Roses", is a cautionary tale of karma hunting down an ex-lover who hurt her. Even still, there's more of an air that she's simply warning the wrongful party here - it's not a threat, she's just stating a fact about how the world works (as she sees it anyway). Still keeping it classy. Musically, this is thick and fleecy, lounging languidly in a boudoir sofette with low humming synths.
"Deserve Me" is an elegant and drip-droppy hip hop soul duet with Summer Walker, who is now officially my new favourite random feature after previously popping up on last year's Kendrick Lamar record. Very killer refrain on this cut, almost as addictive as the track that follows it. Speaking of which...
"Moonlight" was quite possibly my SOTY for 2023. A lot can be said for how erotic round shapes are for basically all genders and sexual preferences, and I don't know how to explain this but the song simply sounds ROUND in every possible way. The funk bass is so bubbly and horny and sopping wet that it's probably illegal in many parts of the world. Kali is giving it her ALL on those verses. Absolutely luxurious production. The chorus has that subtle air of mystery that really ensnares the erotic imagination. I can't even remember the last time I heard a song that positively oozed sex like this, while also describing such a clearly healthy relationship. Is it possible to be getting drunk off of flowery bubble bath fumes? Because this is precisely what it would feel like. Interstellar spa getaway for two in the neon pink galaxy of Aphrodite. Perfect fucking song. A++ goddamn.
I could say a few words as to how this is a back-loaded record, but I think y'all have heard me call something front or back loaded at least a dozen times and I'm struggling to find original ways to express this sentiment. Either way, this is a milder case - more just that the second half is so consistently brilliant that it kinda blows the first half out of the water, particularly that early-mid section. The weakest moments here are the least imaginative ones.
But a very good chunk of this record is just pure gold. Red Moon In Venus is a vibrant and aesthetically immaculate R&B record, possibly the best of the new decade thus far.
As I publish this review, Kali has already dropped another album in the first few weeks of 2024 and it sounds almost as good as this one. I don't know how exactly she's doing it but she makes exploring a variety of genres and killing it at every one of them look so easy. Kali Uchis is the queen of her medium right now.
9/10
Highlights: "Moonlight", "I Wish You Roses", "Deserve Me (with Summer Walker)", "Moral Conscience", "All Mine", "Endlessly", "Not Too Late (Interlude)", "Love Between", "Happy Now"

BREAK OUT Magazine - January 2005
Oh, what hasn't already been speculated about Rammstein, interpreted in and out, speculated, argued about, philosophized and written about. And what remains after all the suggestions and half-truths, mostly brought into the world by people who are not really enthusiastic about Rammstein? What remains of all the reproaches, resentment and envy? It remains what every Rammstein concert ends with, whether in “Amerika”, in “Moskau” or in Frankfurt. In Rammstein's language, the smell of decay remains. Spoken in the language of the now refined feuilletonists, “the smell of burnt sulfur powder in the badly misty air”.
The fans aren't interested in any of that. He goes to a Rammstein concert because he likes it, because he likes the music, because he likes the show. It doesn't matter to him whether a pseudo-academic moralizer is still pointing out the rolling "R" of front man Till Lindemann with the double standard index, whether he is bothered by the Leni Riefenstahl aesthetics of many a video clip or promotional photo, or whether Wagner and Nietzsche are even trying to explain the Rammstein phenomenon.
And Rammstein doesn't care either. They do their thing and are still on the journey through all the reception phases of their work. In the concert, this is staged violently and loudly with the help of an infernal fire and the staccato of their album title "Reise, Reise" right at the beginning. No, masquerade, provocation or even false labeling cannot and do not want to be the solution for Mrs. Kleingeist's and Mr. Verleumder's misjudgment of sincerity and straightforwardness. But that doesn't matter to the fan either. He chooses what he likes. And what Rammstein offer seems to please.
Walking upright through the fire takes 80 minutes. What follows are two blocks of encores to achieve the saturation level of illumination, explosion and a musical material battle of industrial rock thunderstorms for the 13,000 Rammstein disciples in the Frankfurt Festhalle, who are thirsting for more and more.
From song to song, you're mesmerized by the spacious stage design, from which the Rammstein neon logo is carved into the heads of the pilgrims like a chisel in stone. From song to song you wait spellbound for what is to come. The group loudly celebrates alternately Sodom, masturbation, anal intercourse and Gomorrah and finally cannibalism in the form of the quite bizarrely staged song "Mein Teil". While firecracker Lindemann, disguised as a cook, lures keyboard virtuoso Christian ‘Flake’ Lorenz into an oversized cooking pot, he prepares the Rammstein-typical inferno of fire. With two self-constructed flamethrowers installed on the arms, Lindemann provides enough jets of flame to serve the columnists a new meal for their criticism. The reminiscence of the “Cannibal of Rothenburg” Armin Meiwes is successful. The staging too, and the feuilletonist is just as fed up as the applauding people. The amuse gueule (with songs like the swaggering "Links 2, 3, 4") tasted good, the starter (with the promising "Feuer Frei") was excellent, and the main course is served, as with the song "Rammstein" the long-awaited “Arrow of Fire” with arrows shot over the audience is offered. "Stein um Stein" traveled Rammstein in "Moscow" and "Amerika" until they finally see the "Sonne", with or "Ohne dich". The concert almost looks like a best-of show. Whether it's “Du hast”, “Du riechst so gut” or “Ich will”, none of the shout-along anthems are missing.
Rammstein just know how to put themselves in the limelight, be it with the ritualized setting themselves on fire, cultically revered neo-classics or new pyromaniac tricks. The journey through their oeuvre to date appears serene with 18 of their best songs, including the Depeche Mode cover “Stripped”. Rammstein nuance where they used to be excessive. And thanks to their marketing, Rammstein have become what they always wanted to be: the best rock band that Germany (after the retired Scorpions) ever had.

What kind of other movie do you want to see R and T star in together? Personally, and this is somewhat influenced by TBOSBAS and T’s own show Billy The Kid, but I think the idea of a sort of steamy, R-rated, movie that probably takes place in Texas or Louisiana in the late 2000s wherein R’s character is more of a crude and sensual protagonist (who may or may not have ASPD or sociopathy) dragging along T’s character into trouble, but he can’t help himself to her charms. Probably a lot to type in, but I just love the aesthetics for this movie I just made up
I love your idea! Haven’t heard of that one before. Personally, I want to see a TV show (for selfish reasons lol) but I’m fine with more movies too!
1. Romantic thriller (Bonnie & Clyde, End of The F***ing World vibes)
2. Bridgerton (would love to see them have their own spinoff like Queen Charlotte, separate from the main show)
3. A romantic comedy! Something light hearted and fun because I think the promo tour would be hilarious and amazing.
4. R mentioned she wanted to do a gangster/mob movie so her character is the daughter of a Big Mob Boss who killed T’s father and T’s is private detective determined to bring in down so he starts using R to get info but falls for her instead
5. Pure romance! A remake to An Affair to Remember or something very romantic and cheesy!
6. Romance-action! Think Speed (Keanu and Sandra were excellent!), The Matrix (Neo and Trinity!), Mr and Mrs Smith, Focus!)
7. Survival/horror/apocalypse story! Two people fighting for their lives in a destroyed society. Like 28 Days Later.

hello arcana whats it like working on the solus shield resistance?
Arcana Magnus: ah, that's an interesting story... you see, Solus Prime is my grandmentor. She and Amalgamous alongside Azimuth helped my laborer-teacher mentors Gallium and Feldspar to raise Galvatron and I. Primes where I come from are- not people with direct political power from their title. They are more advisors, who navigate their personal life with the help of the wisdom of a Matrix while taking a role in the collective good as a Prime. Sometimes of course, this does lead to them to become sages, knights errant, archivists, scientists, artists, in a different path than their life before, from the realizations a Matrix comes with... and when there is unfortunate need, war leaders. Solus- deeply cared for the iteration of the cosmos, whether the causality and variability around us or contextual formation and internal creation and imagination we are capable of, from dust to dust, a reflection of a deeper truth of the world. They loved to make things, forging tools for the people to use, teaching people to do so, building some of our first train lines, working on our first FTL engine, and, to her joy- presiding over aesthetic affirmation surgeries. She wasn't a blacksmith, so she couldn't help with initial protoform shaping the way dear Anode can just with hands, but sometimes extra help is needed then or after.
In my case, more than a century after, with her and Minerva's help, working with the parts I forged with tools to bring my own realizations into shape, but I couldn't quite add them to myself.
The Shield of Solus formed in my grandmentor's honor, to lead the defense the AllSpark and the Core of Cybertron as she had against the Functionist coup of our Cybertronian pluralistic democracies, and did again when the Decepticons attempted to strike at the same time Unicronists and Neo-Functionists did. When the Great War reached a point where it was clear it wouldn't end any time soon, she gave up her Matrix, now beared by Elita One- the head of the Shield of Solus, the vanguard command team of the Elite Guard.
It was hard, those millennia when Cybertron was blockaded and besieged by a Decepticon fleet from the Rim. Seeing polities and landscapes we had rebuilt after the Unicron incursion and the Functionist coup thereafter bombarded to rubble again... so many fleeing deep underground for protection from the Core once more... The team I fought alongside made it bearable. Greenlight, one of my dear loves, kept us alive with her hacking and intel skills, as darling Lancer also did as an engineer, and the two are both quite skilled combatants in their own right at range and up close. I often was in the role of a sniper duo with Moonracer, or wading into melee with Chromia, and advising Elita's command of the guerrilla defense of Cybertron while we waited for our galactic alliance to cut through as we tried to drive the Decepticons away. And Firestar dragged me out of the rubble or put out fires on my frame more than once, guarding me until Lifeline or another medic could reach me.
More than anything, the close-knit spirit, the endearing touch and care and friendship, made the three of us who were partners feel at home with them. We had moved to Caminus after the Functionist War, but the events leading up to the Great War brought us and our neighbor Firestar back to Cybertron often, and we were there for a strategy session when the Decepticon armada led by Six Shadow struck. Moonracer, a Velocitronian, was reporting in for defensive Wrecker duties in the Hadean, and Lifeline was a medic on staff for Paradron's delegation in the Autobot Alliance. Elita's flagship battlecruiser was the first ship to be struck, rammed in a surface repair yard by a Decepticon dreadnought, both ships lost in the process, devastating the Hydrax Plateau with a massive detonation from the sheer mass and acceleration, dwarfing any of your nuclear weapons, more akin to crashing a large asteroid into the Earth. I did not see the Hadean sun with my own optics for many years. So-
We gave them all our fury, and each other all our sweetness, and compassion and understanding to all. We fought as Autobots do. We cried, we laughed, we raged, we kept our heads cool most of the time, but it was hard.
The day we led a marine assault on Six Shadow's flagship and took down the Phase Sixer with our thermal weaponry and ununtrium rounds was one of the most relieving of my life, and to embrace Aileron, Grimlock, Galvatron, Windblade, Strongarm, Gauge, and Sideswipe, helped make it all feel real, that we had actually succeeded. By this point, we of the Shield of Solus felt close enough to try using an Engima of Combination to combine together, such was our trust. But that is a story for another time... <3

TWST - "OFF-WORLD"
youtube
Our own Hannah begins the D&B t.A.T.u revival...
[7.25]
Hannah Jocelyn: This gem was produced by Mike Spencer, whose maximalist EDM work graced Rudimental and Ellie Goulding's best music in the early 2010s. "Off-World", which TWST wrote with Lauren Aquilina and Marcus Anderson, brings that sound back to life with headier lyrics. The vocal sound is SO bright it's almost fatiguing, but that adds to the song's urgency; Chloe Davis will break through time, space, and the capabilities of de-essers to be their true self. Aquilina's previous song "Empathy" was about the perils of lacking emotional boundaries, but here, dissolving boundaries is a path to romantic transcendence: "Wanna float, wanna fly, wanna try to ascend this skin/Wanna feel what you feel, but I can't feel anything." I have a whole playlist of songs that attempt to verbalize that need for all-consuming intimacy, and in those songs it often ends up toxic. Davis is aware of this, which is why "I wanna give you it all" comes with the necessary caveat "...without giving myself away." Still, the most prominent queer art of the last quarter-century depicts this ache for a reason, whether it's Genesis P-Orridge and Lady Jaye using their bodies as performance art, Neo and Trinity becoming The One in Matrix Resurrections, or everything involving Steven Universe. As "Off-World" careens into its drops, TWST approximates what that bliss must feel like. [9]
Aaron Bergstrom: A warm-hearted, techno-utopian update on "All The Things She Said," which unfortunately means it isn't quite as good. [6]
Katherine St Asaph: "All the Things She Said" deconstructed into its three elements. One: The hook -- well, one of them. Two: Ethereal yearning, and the desire to escape into the fantasy worlds and heightened emotional reality found in saturated pastorals, cities at night, dark chromed spaceships, or whatever other AMV aesthetic you personally want to get isekai'd into. Three: The frantic, obsessive pace of that yearning, which takes physical form here as a drum-and-bass break (probably the next sound to bubble back up to mainstream offline pop). [8]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: The Expanse AMV-type beat [8]
Jackie Powell: It's been awfully hard to figure out why "Off-World" sounds so familiar. Is it similar to a video game theme? Or is this more like the theme to the French animated series Code Lyoko that ran on Cartoon Network for a few years in the 2000s? Sonically, not exactly. But what links them all is how they fit together as science fiction, with world-hopping. TWST explained that "Off-World'' is about "a cyborg girl who descends upon Earth, yearning to break free" who finds liberation in another place. TWST is best in the pre-chorus; the yearning and the struggle are there. But I question the potency of the chorus. Where is that conflict? Where's the payoff? It seems a little monotonous compared to the rest of this three and a half minute journey. The percussive elements in that hook, however, are exhilarating. Well done, Mike Spencer. [6]
Wayne Weizhen Zhang: An epic about a cyborg girl descending upon earth and trying to find liberation, personal freedom, and authenticity sounds amazing, but it shouldn't take TWST's long statement about the track for me to understand the story. The musical experience of "Off-World" doesn't speak for itself, and despite how pretty it sounds, the track's immense ambitions are let down by the hook's flatness. [5]
Taylor Alatorre: How do I justify not slapping an automatic [10] on what is essentially Springsteenian cyberpunk? In part it's that "Off-World" suffers from its own success. The pre-chorus is substantially more stirring and anthemic than the chorus, which leads to the latter feeling like a deflation of energies, or an artificial limit on the possibilities the song wants to conjure. Songs about escape, whether from the "swamps of Jersey" or from the burdens of meatspace, are more dependent than usual on structure and momentum, on both mapping out a compelling journey and ensuring the destination lives up to expectations. But if "Off-World" falls a bit short in its goal of ferrying us to a frictionless utopia, that cliché about the journey and the destination isn't wrong here. "Meet me at the borderline" -- most of us are there already, but TWST knows how to make it sound like an undiscovered country. [7]
Will Adams: There's a point at which desire transcends the bounds of a standard crush, when the promise of being with someone seems so out of reach it becomes science fiction. They exist in a whole other world, you think. How could I ever meet them there? This is what that feels like: swirling synths that conjure the cosmic chasm separating you from them, but a breakneck d&b pulse that launches you into that open space. "Off-World" embodies the feeling of reaching out your hand, unsure whether your fingertips will ever meet theirs. [9]
Frank Falisi: The pre-chorus is the most sci-fi of all song parts, tipping into the transformation that comes next but unfolding with what came before still rattling in the air. A lot of pop invokes sci-fi imagery, but to treat the parts of a pop song as linguistic elements might suggest actual future-facing strategies of realizing a speculative electronic. In the meantime, comics-brained love-borgs promising the kiss of a world beyond this bad rock is a sweet time fizz. [6]
David Moore: A lovely take on one of my absolute favorite tropes in pop music: escaping the burden of society, and maybe corporeality altogether, in outer space! My personal standard-bearer is t.A.T.u.'s "Cosmos," which is to say I'm missing another dollop of melodrama, and I have minor quibbles with the words tilting more toward metaphor than they need to -- can I get one reference to a spaceship or something? But that's probably just a taste issue. [7]
Kayla Beardslee: Pop music is escapism, and hyperpop is pop music taken to the extreme, so why not interpret hyperpop to mean escapism so extreme that it creates an entirely new world?="margin:> [7]
Alfred Soto: Drum 'n' bass skitters! I run lukewarm on 'em, but when the track has a solid hook and okay lyrics they function like a laugh track in a pretty good sitcom. [6]
Micha Cavaseno: The last couple years have had drum & bass-style breaks wreak their revenge on pop in both the mainstream and the sub-stream (oh my god all the precious kids making "breakcore"), and it's reminded me of the worst aspects of the genre: unimaginative chopping of the same two or three loops. "Off-World" is a delightful whispy yearning little piece of leydrift, and I can't imagine it without that little baby's first junglism flourish. But I wish it had something that would make it feel properly unearthly. Of course, it's just that I don't know what I'd want that makes the sense of an unknown future so tantalizing, and that's what I'd hope this song could've gotten. [6]
Ian Mathers: I know I've heard the drum break that gets used in the chorus many times over the years, but it absolutely works for me every time. The sci-fi stuff only sorta coheres, but I'm a sucker for that too. [8]
Brad Shoup: Look, Mike Spencer did "Feel the Love". He will see heaven. I dunno that the venerable breaks contribute anything to the sci-fi metaphor--maybe they make things cyberpunk--but I still love 'em. Everything that happens between the verses is exquisite: the long bass notes that are practically detonated, TWST's perfectly urgent adult-alternative chorus (I'm hearing... Paula Cole?), and even the title itself. Just a really evocative thing to sigh. [8]
Nortey Dowuona: thank u Chloe Davis. [10]

Blue Beetle: DC's Anime Breakthrough?
When you look at it, Blue Beetle could be the ticket for DC to break into the anime scene. It's got this cyberpunk vibe going on, all that high-octane energy, which is what anime thrives on. And here's the thing: it doesn't follow your run-of-the-mill superhero script. It has heart and soul, and the action is wild when Jaime Reyes and the Scarab team up. These two go from strangers to basically siblings on a mission to save the world.
Over time, they figure out they need each other, like on a deep human level. It doesn't matter that one's from Earth and the other's not. This bond is what makes Blue Beetle's ending so satisfying. Jaime becomes a one-man wrecking crew, and it's just incredible. incrediblThethe director, Ángel Manuel Sotalsohas, admitted that anime influenced the film. So, who knows, this might just be DC's golden ticket into the anime world.
DC's dipped its toes into anime, but it's never set things on fire. I mean, Suicide Squad Isekai looks decent, but it's not exactly the talk of the town. Disney hit a home run with Star Wars Visions, and people couldn't stop talking about it. It had substance and style, you know? DC fans have been wondering when they'd get something like that.
But Blue Beetle's got that cyberpunk energy that could make it happen. Jaime's world in the Edge Keys is like Akira meets Neo Tokyo, and it's a visual feast with all those neon lights and synth music. If they decide to make more, DC could use this aesthetic to bridge the gap between Blue Beetle films. And here's the genius part: they can bring in all those obscure villains that the movies and live-action shows don't have plans for.
Imagine seeing Jaime and Jenny, Ted Kord's heroic daughter, using tech for good and taking down bad guys with names like Overthrow, the Madmen, or Jarvis Kord. It's like a teen Iron Man but with a romantic twist. That's the stuff of a killer modern anime right there. The movie has that fast-paced, cartoonish action, so it's a natural fit.
And there's more potential here. Blue Beetle can dive into the DCU's past. You've got Dan Garrett and Ted Kord, the previous Blue Beetles, right? Well, an anime prequel could set the stage for Jaime's story. Show how Dan found the Scarab in Bialya and kicked off the Blue Beetle legacy.
It's also a chance to bring in other heroes, like Gunn's Justice League or the Justice Society, with their immortal Hawkman. This backstory could explain why Amanda Waller and Task Force X later join forces with heroes to keep tabs on these super folks. Plus, it could explore Ted and Dan's friendship, why the Scarab didn't bond with Ted when Dan died, and why Ted disappeared.
You could even throw in some military subplots with Victoria and Carapax, showcasing the OMAC project, armored soldiers, and mechs on secret government missions. This would give Victoria's character more depth and shed light on how she turned Carapax into DC's version of the Winter Soldier.
Sure, it might be expensive to do all that in a film, but in anime, you can show the scale of Victoria's vision and the destruction her weapons caused worldwide. After the movie's success, expanding on this winning formula is a no-brainer. It'd create a comprehensive roadmap, so no character gets left behind in the DC Multiverse.
Now, James Gunn has a mission to make the DCU just as emotionally gripping as the MCU. And he's been leaning into animation, as we've seen with Creature Commandos. So, diving into anime, a medium loved by fans worldwide, makes sense. It's a chance to explore Jaime's Latine culture, his family's journey as Mexican immigrants, and the Scarab's alien past as Khaji-Da.
This mix of mediums, periods, and characters has worked for shows like Pacific Rim: The Black and Skull Island. They might not have hit as big as Marvel, but Blue Beetle is building a dedicated following. It's a way to prove that the DCU is adaptable, open to blending styles, and can appeal to fans worldwide while still keeping its own identity.
So, Blue Beetle's in theaters now, but who knows, the real adventure might just be beginning in the anime world.
