The eighth and final costume of "Unnatural Habits" (Season 2, Episode 12) is the triumphant return of Phryne's remarkable rooster kimono.
While it's impossible to tell which of her pajama sets Miss Fisher is wearing underneath, her rooster kimono serves as an elegant yet minimal outfit for her vulnerable talk with Jack late at night. The dressing gown itself is made of a black satin that serves as a backdrop to the intricate embroidery that adorn the shoulders and cover the back. A wide variety of threads paint a picture of a flowering tree branch going up from the hem of the kimono and reaching up to her shoulders, while two roosters battle it out in the air.
Essie Davis mentions the dressing gown specifically as her favorite item of clothing in both a video interview with Acorn TV as well as a written interview with NPR:
"I do have a favorite," she acknowledges. "Because I love the simplicity and the extraordinary detail of this beautiful black satin dressing gown that is in chinois embroidery, and on the back of it, are these two embroidered fighting cocks. And I think it is the most perfectly tongue-in-cheek piece of costume, and I love putting it on, 'cause I love the idea that there are fighting cocks." And then she cackles.
This is another item from costume designer Marion Boyce’s personal collection, and according to the Costume Exhibition Catalogue was “one of the last pieces that came out of China before they closed their trading borders in the 1920s”.
“I bought this years and years ago from a retro store, Gollyester in Los Angeles when I was doing Crocodile Dundee 3… it was the most beautiful thing I had seen. I’ve got a passion for Chinoiserie.” - Marion Boyce in the Series One Costume Exhibition Catalogue.
One of several robes designed for nightwear, this is certainly one of her most memorable ones, appearing in the very first episode, 1x01, and then showing up in 1x04, 1x06, 1x10, 2x08, before being bookended at the end of season two here.

The third ensemble of "Murder Under the Mistletoe" (Season 2, Episode 13) is Phryne's beautiful antique printed jacket atop her intricately beaded black blouse and black pants.
Combining detail and drama, Miss Fisher wears a black blouse with a sheer yoke decorated with intricate beading in a geometric art deco pattern, extending from a central point and curving around to the back. The blouse has long sleeves and tight fitted cuffs, and two ribbons connected by a zig-zagging thread along her neckline (known as a fagoted seam).
The short-sleeve silk jacket worn on top adds a layer of subtle festivity to the look with bright green silk lining and a pattern of papyrus branches and reeds printed on the outside. A vintage piece, this been described as one of Essie Davis' favorite costumes:
“Another one of my favorite costumes is what I wore on the very first day of filming - to meet Murdoch Foyle (Phryne’s younger sister’s murderer) in jail. It was black silk pants with a little black top in sheer black chiffon with beading and a fantastic antique short-sleeved jacket in an orange, gold and black design that reminds me of a Margaret Preston painting." - Essie Davis, Miss Fisher’s Costume Exhibition
Margaret Preston was considered the most prominent female Australian artist of the 1920′s and 1930′s. In a desire to create art that reflected her country, she was the first non-indigenous artist to use Aboriginal elements in her paintings. Her “Still Life” from 1925 appeared in “Raisins and Almonds” (1x05) where Miss Fisher declares “Margaret Preston is a talent to watch”, and hangs to the left of her fireplace in her parlor.
Phryne finishes her look with her classic black silk faille pants, long green teardrop earrings (seen on the right in the exhibition photo), and a black beaded necklace that feature larger beads on either side of the central beaded fringe. During a quick trip out into the snow to investigate with Jack, she dons a black fur wrap, seen in 2x01.
A fabulous ensemble, we've seen this exact outfit (apart from the jewelry) in both "Raisins and Almonds" (1x05) and twice in "Death By Miss Adventure" (1x10).

Soldier boy, what will you make of the stripped bones of your past selves? What meaning have you salvaged from your mangled body? In your closet are legacies of a thousand skeletons, in your wardrobe hangs the capes and sweaters you outgrew against your will. Soldier boy, once underground and then underwater, fathom yourself a life above the surface. Outlive the demon you worshipped, soldier boy, and cut your hair again when this world is reborn.
Hunter hands down have the most outfit changes than any of the characters in toh (while also rivaling amity in the hairstyle changes category). I think that says a lot about the character. Hunter was never given the space to define his reality and his own personhood. Discovering who he is outside of Belos' right hand means bumbling around and wear wacky red bird onesies and cosplays and blue watermelon sweatpants and custom wolf shirts. His fashion taste is not superb and often played for laughs but that's the whole point. He's instinctually trying to speedrun the self-exploration, the switching personas, and the interest-based phases that all teenagers experience. The variety of his clothes reflects his shaky sense of self. Speaking from experience (but also please correct me if I got something wrong factually), trauma disrupts one's ability to integrate various version of oneself in a functional/holistic manner (especially if you have to shift back and forth between different paradigms growing up).
