are your rat sons rat sized after their mutation or person sized? somewhere in-between?

an excellent question! heres what im thinking:

so despite being exposed to the mutagen at exactly the same time as Splinter, i think it takes a few years for the boys to develop any physical signs of mutation (ie size or more humanoid proportions). instead they show more signs of mutation in their intelligence, rapidly developing skills in things like verbal (and non verbal) communication, problem-solving, recognition of themselves and the concept of other people, etc etc.

basically they mentally develop like wickedly smart and chaotic little human toddlers, but in only-slightly-bigger-than-average rat bodies, up until theyre about two or so. then they start getting growth spurts. (yes this is largely because drawing tiny rat babies clamoring over an entirely unfazed happy turtle papa fills my heart with endless joy)

around age four ish is when i think theyre approaching like clearly anthropomorphized 'oh that is a child' status. theyre much smaller than a human kid their age would be, and they face a lot of mishaps in which they learn the hard way they can no longer squeeze through every tiny gap in sight (donnie def gets stuck inside serval appliances).

around seven ish they also cant all fit on splinters back at the same time anymore :(

now, while this is very much an Alternate Universe and not really gonna be more than vaguely parallel to the '03 verse, it is born of the 03 verse, and one of my favorite things of '03 is how those boys feel like absolutely massive tanks of turtles that are in fact hilariously miniature whenever on screen next to any average sized human person. in a similar vein, no one in this house is getting even close to 6ft. short kings all around.

so the answer i suppose is, eventually, mostly human sized, just very short human sized!

I will always consider both Harmony and Roque to be rats, and though I hate Harmony far more overall, I find Roque’s betrayal to be worse.

Harmony ratted on Darrow, Fitchner/Ares and the Rising in a moment of rage and desperation. She felt (un-rightfully) justified in what she perceived as revenge against “golds” (Darrow, Fitchner, and others). She also traded information in exchange for freedom and survival, which is a “decent” reason for ratting. Even though nothing she does in this instance is even remotely right, she still has reasons for doing what she did. She was up against a wall, being tortured with no way out, and she felt like Darrow and Ares had betrayed the cause (even though they had not). I could never justify her actions because they were atrocious and she’s a piece of shit, but she did have reasons for doing horrible things in the heat of the moment when it was her life or someone else’s, and there was no clear way out. Her betrayal in this instance is infuriating because if she hated Ares for being gold she didn’t have to rat on Darrow too. Everyone wanted to know who Ares was. No one was looking for Darrow. Regardless, she was desperate. She was surviving. She was alone. She is utterly horrible and did not think it through. This was not a long term thought-out plan on Harmony’s part.

But Roque? Roque’s betrayal was cold-blooded. It was calculated. His life was not in jeopardy. He did not do it out of desperation, revenge, rage, or need for survival. He did it because he could. He thought it out. He had time to sit on it and decide what to do. He was not backed into a corner. He could have warned Darrow. Instead, he was an active participant in a scheme against Darrow. What Roque did, he did on purpose with intent and precision. He was not overwhelmed, manhandled or blackmailed into participating in a coup against his will or better jugement. He was scheming. He was a key participant in a planned out coup, that involved being right in the centre of the betrayal. Cassius killed Fitchner because he was a threat, but I seriously doubt he did so out of malice and it is highly unlikely he killed Fitcher via decapitation (if they fought). Which means that Fitchner’s head was removed after he died. It means that Roque saw them put Fitchner’s head in a box, and carried it over to Darrow without so much as shaking. He wasn’t even supposed to “crown” Darrow that day during the ceremony. He most likely volunteered to paralyze Darrow and present Ares’ head to him. Even though he logically knows it was Aja and the Jackal that killed Quinn, he still sided with them over Darrow. He chose to pin Quinn’s death on Darrow. He decided Darrow was more at fault because of his colour. That’s cold. That’s vicious. That’s shameless. He had a thought-out plan that he executed with intent and extreme lack of remorse.

Harmony betrayed Darrow and Ares in a hot-blooded attempt at “revenge”.

Roque betrayed Darrow in cold-blood, because he believed in racial supremacy.

Since Roque loves poetry so much, I’ve decided to end this post with a little interlude on rats. 💗💗

Okay okay okay so in canon, Donnie kept trying to make retromutagen so that Splinter could be human again. That feels like an important part of 12 Donnie and Splinter's relationship, so I was wondering how that would translate in DDMG, and also if it could translate into the au.

I think the way that would work would be Donnie ending up being the most fixated on finding out who Splinter used to be and why he is the way he is. Like what happened to Sensei to make him a mix between a ghost and rat demon and why does he black out every night and wander around NYC?

Mikey is also eager to figure this out, so this is a team effort between these two. After they reunite with Venus, she is also heavily involved in this, because Tseng is training her on all the spirit stuff, so she's got a lot of books and old texts the boys wouldn't otherwise have access to.

Donnie also gets fixated on finding Shen and Miwa, thinking maybe if they find them, that might fix some of Splinter's issues. Like as time goes on, Splinter's memory issues are going to get really, really bad. We're talking forgetting where he is, what year it is, what he was doing a moment before, not being able to remember what was said to him in a conversation whilst he's still in said conversation, and forgetting who the people around him are. Donnie thinks if he finds Shen, that might fix something in Splinter and he'll stop forgetting everything.

This is also very likely an extension of Donnie's fear of losing people, only in this situation he's taking the gamble of Splinter's obsession being fulfilled and rat dad crossing over to the Land of the Dead properly, meaning Donnie and his brothers lose their father because he's now dead and gone vs Splinter forgetting everything and becoming little more than a feral rat demon who doesn't know who they are anymore.

But this means that a lot of DDMG has a background plot of Tang Shen, who has gone to extreme lengths to keep herself and Miwa hidden, vs Donatello, who is determined to find them and in doing so unintentionally wingmanning for his adopted father

okayokayokayokay so pretty much all of these questions will be Officially Answered properly in the character design/intro pages im working on but also i am physically vibrating with excitement about the fact that you noticed all these details and i have very little self control so! lore dump time!!!

(minor tw for mentions of leos self-harm/self-destructive anxious behaviors and unhealthy coping skills)

- mikey does indeed have curly fur! i believe he would be considered a 'rex' rat (pictured on the left) for this trait? though the curls can be more easily seen on mice (pictured on the right). or, at least it seems that way. have not delved too deeply into the details of rodent genes and husbandry, but id assume its the same sort of mutation considering curly haired mice are also referred to as rex sometimes? either way hes a extra floofy bby 🧡

-as for raphie, unfortunately being more fluff and less shell than the average rapheal comes with its downsides. especially if you and your brothers occasionally encounter things like territorial dogs, hungry cats, or sewer crocodiles while exploring places ur dad said not supposed to go. (most of his scars will have more ninja related stories, but his ear i think got messed up from something very animal. probably around age 11 ish? old enough to sneak out from dads protection but young enough to not fully know how to handle himself alone against real danger. thankfully his ear injury looks worse than it actually is for the most part, as the damage was largely to the outer ear. his hearing wasnt super affected, except that he now has a bit of a harder time being able to track/pinpoint noises origins if its on his right side.)

-also yep! dons got some glasses that just clip/rest on the bridge of his nose! theyre mostly just for home use, as they do fall off if hes knocked around. in the field he has some goggles he tends to use (theyre helpful as they have multiple additional functions like heat-imaging, extra zoom/telescoping, and recording capabilities. but also theyll give him headaches if he wears them for too long without breaks). contacts are theoretically also an option but he absolutely hates the sensation of putting them in. so sometimes when hes tired he'll just not bother with either clips or goggles and just squint and struggle. leo hates when he does that lol.

-speaking of leo, he is def an anxious baby :) he has a few patches of fur missing on his hand cos he has the tendency to tug on it while hes thinking. he yanked and chewed on his own tail a lot when he was younger too, which is why when hes older he usually wears some wraps to cover the scars left from that behavior. he finds those scars specifically to be kinda embarrassing and shameful because they werent from any battle or life-lesson, just his own 'inability to control himself'. all of his brothers have repeatedly called him out on the fact that that is not a healthy way to think about his anxiety or mental health, but leo insists hes fine. hes kinda convinced himself that a proper warrior always has control over his own body* and his own thoughts, thus he should be able to just like willpower-brute-force his way into 'being better'. (this line of thinking pisses raph off so much he has to leave and go hit something)

Splinter also tries to talk him through some of that internalized guilt/shame/everything, but splinters very metaphorical, poetic, and indirect when it comes to talking about Big Things, which combined with how much leo gets caught in his own head, makes it kinda hard to gauge how much these talks actually help

*this is made extra fun considering leos also ftm trans, so he is faced with a body that fundamentally disobeys him perhaps more than the average rat-man.

-and im still going back and forth between a few species for splinter, but im leaning mostly towards an African Spurred Tortoise! they have these beautiful if kinda subtle geometric shell patterns and are the third largest species of tortoise in the world. the only thing that doesnt fit perfectly with Splints is that (allegedly) their lifespan in captivity is around 50ish years, whereas im p sure Tortoise Splinter is well over 75, probably closer to 90 when the boys are born and hes mutated into Old Man Papa.

but maybe hes just a particularly long lasting African Spurred Tortoise.

the Hamato family has taken very good care of him for many decades after all. :)

☾ GOJO SATORU  

“C'mon guys, it’s time to go,” Satoru yells for his twins who are running around the park. “Ten more minutes Daddy.” His boy yells back before sliding down the slide. “Daddy already gave you guys ten more minutes—thirty minutes ago. It’s time to go home now.” Satoru firmly tells his kids as he walks towards them. “I don’t wanna go!” His boy screams back. “Me either!” The little girls say. “You guys, the sun is setting and we gotta get home to your mom and baby brother. Let’s go.” He sighs, it’s not like he’s being unreasonable, they’ve been at the park all day long. “No no no!” they yell before taking off. “Hey, get back here now!” He yells before he starts to chase them up the small stairs, he trips immediately, failing to take into account that these are kid stairs. “Oh, fuck me!” He cries holding onto his shin. “Ouu, we’re telling mommy you said bad words!” Satoru looks up at his twins from his place on the dirty stairs before getting out “Ten more minutes.” He grits out and they cheer, thinking they won, but truthfully, he doesn’t think he can stand back up. 

☾ GETO SUGURU 

Suguru pulls out of the school parking lot after picking his daughter up from school. “How was your day, baby?” he asks, looking in the mirror to see his daughter glaring at him with her arms folded. “Baby?” He questions. He swore she didn’t have this attitude when he buckled her in her booster seat. “Leave me alone ugly.” She spits out from her booster seat. “Woah,” he chuckles. “Where is that attitude coming from?” He inquires but his daughter just rolls her eyes in return. “Baby? What’s wrong—” he’s cut off by a kick to his seat. “D/n!” He exclaims. “You rat!” She yells and kicks the seat again. “Baby, what has gotten into you today?” Suguru asks. “You said you’d bring me a smoothie!” She cries out. Shit, Suguru thinks he does remember promising her a smoothie this morning. “That’s because I wanted to bring you to the smoothie shop to make your own baby!” He lies, turning back to smile and caress her knee. “R-really?” “Really.” She huffs and looks out the window. “Okay, but you’re still ugly.”  

☾ CHOSO KAMO 

Choso places small kisses on your shoulder as he lies behind you in your dark room. You feel small butterflies in your stomach, but they abruptly stop when your bedroom door is swung open. Choso turns around to the sight of your son grinning. “Why aren't you asleep?” Choso asks, letting go of your hips. “I wanna sleep with you guys tonight!” he exclaims as he walks up to the bed, dragging his stuffed dinosaur on the floor behind him. “Not tonight,” Choso tells him as he starts to get out of bed. “Yes, tonight!” He exclaims and starts to climb the bed but before he can get up Choso grabs him and slings his small body over his shoulder. “No baby, tonight you’re gonna be a big boy and sleep in your bed, say goodnight to mommy.” “No! I wanna sleep in your room!” He screams the entire way back to his bedroom, hitting Choso with his dinosaur. “I want to sleep with mommy!” “Are there monsters under your bed again? I can scare them away.” “No, you’re the monster, the big dumb monster!"

☾ NANAMI KENTO 

“I want this, Daddy!” Kento’s daughter yells as she pulls him towards the snack shelf. “Not today sweetheart, remember we came here to get some ingredients?” He says trying to walk out of the aisle. “No Daddy, I want cookies!” She whines pulling Kento’s belt loop. He grunts, cheeks turning a dusty pink when she almost successfully pulls his pants down. “Baby you’re gonna pull my pants off,” He tries to wench your knuckle tight grip. “We have cookies at home sweetheart.” He explains but all she hears is her father yelling her no. “I want a cookie now!” She stomps grabbing the attention of other shoppers. “D/n, what did Daddy say? We have those exact cookies at home and if you're good and stop crying you can have some when we get home.” He reasons as his daughter starts to tear up. “I want five cookies then!” she demanded with a loud sniff that caused Kento to smile because her stubbornness reminded him of you.
