This little ape is pretty iconic on tumblr, having a niche popularity as a meme from the "and me" post that is around ten years old! That's a long time for this mysterious (and cute) face to circulate.

I get a decent amount of people both in real life and online asking me about her, which makes sense because as a big advocate for primate welfare I can tell you the golden rule is primates are not pets and should not be kept in domestic human contexts. People attuned to the inherent cruelty of keeping primates as pets and raising apes like human children are wary of images like this, because that is exactly what it looks like.

Good news! This baby (as with all babies with Silver Tree Nursery watermarks) is completely fine. Because she's a doll.

Many people know about reborn dolls-- The hyper-realistic baby dolls that look and feel like the real thing-- but not everyone knows that there are also ape reborn dolls. Silver Tree Nursery is a (now defunct) Facebook page for an artist named Gemma who painted and customized reborn dolls and specialized in apes. The artist behind this doll has done several orangutans as well as some gorillas and chimps. While the iconic "and me" model above is a little too cutesy to be perfectly realistic, some of her work is so realistic that it would fool me (if not for the handy watermark). I'm not the first person to post this-- while searching for more pictures I found this tumblr post which seems to have been the big reveal for most people that these are dolls. However, I thought I would tackle 2 follow up questions:

Are these dolls ethical?

Well, yeah. Some might ask if these dolls encourage the idea that this is an acceptable way to treat primates, but personally I think that the very small community of primate doll enthusiasts is a non-issue especially when you consider the impact of social media accounts that promote actual primates being kept as pets and treated like babies. Frankly if you want to snuggle a baby ape this would be the only way to do it (short of working as a surrogate caretaker for orphaned wildlife) without seriously contravening the endangered species act. Still, being vigilant against primate exploitation content is important, so:

How can you tell the difference between super realistic dolls and real primates?

In this case it was as easy as following the watermark. Googling Silver Tree Nursery brings up the Facebook page of the artist who makes the dolls. In general, sourcing is everything. If you know where an image comes from you can determine what the larger context is and whether what is happening is good. Here's an example:

Is this a reborn doll or a real baby? The framing makes it look very similar to the Silver Tree dolls with the stuffed animal and baby blanket, but if you were to reverse Google image search the picture you would find out that this is Yakini, a gorilla from the Werribee Zoo when he was a baby in 1999. Reverse searching is your friend, and it only takes a minute.

I'm shaking. In my search for a reborn doll to soothe the pain of probably never having a child of my own, I managed to find a feisty little girl who charmed me with her fussy expression. My mom says she kind of resembles Queen Elizabeth as a baby which made me laugh. I feel like she'll be a good fit in my rather matriarchal family - I think I never mentioned this so far, but the primary reason why my family has feminist roots is because we're a mostly female clan. My two male cousins are the first men to be born in my maternal bloodline in generations. (which is why I've been comparing my family to a pack of Hyenas since my teenage years). I am just going to let her photograph sink in and process my feelings about it this coming weekend. I'm ordering my babygirl next week. I promise I'll try to post another TWP chapter and the second teaser this weekend, but I might just be too busy with creating a list of babynames I can pick from and scouting for cute baby stuff with my mom because despite the baby being fake (unfortunately), my mom is still struck by grandma fever and wants to spoil her granddaughter.

I was just hit with a sudden idea. Because I wanna see if I could be Simon for Halloween or something (I probably can't because I don't have the right stuff but AWE MAN THE IDEA I JUST HAD)

okay so to explain to the best of my ability, I remembered my sister has got a Jughead Beanie. (From Riverdale, which, I've never seen the show or read the comics, but I at least remember that his beanie looks like a crown.)

Fellas can you see where I'm going with this

I need to learn how to crochet so I can make a beanie that looks like Ice Kings crown. If I can't do it myself, I'll see if I can buy the yarn and get my aunt to do it she's great at crocheting. (All I would need is yellow and red, which I'm sure she has already, but I have sensory issues I need a specific yarn so my skin doesn't feel itchy cause I touched yarn that I don't like)

Other idea, which falls more in line with one of my special interests, is making a Reborn Doll of the baby Ice King from Fionna and Cake. God is my witness I will do it myself if I have to.

To explain, reborn dolls are a form of art dolls that are sculpted and painted to look like real babies, and are weighted as well. Most dolls are sculpted by an artist and made into a vinyl kit to be sold online that can be bought as blank, and then can be painted by someone. Each doll when completed is hand painted with every detail, depending on the artist, if it has hair, it's hand sewn into the vinyl. Every. Single. Little. Strand.

Not every doll is sculpted by an artist, just the majority. Sometimes there are Reborn dolls that are sculpts of REAL babies, and these are called Realborns.

These dolls are of course very expensive, as you're buying a piece of art, not a toy. Someone sat there for hours, maybe days or months painting this doll. The person who sculpted it sat there for longer, and then had to WAIT to get their doll into a mass produced sculpt. (Some sculptors don't get that, and their doll has limited amounts of sculpts made)

There's so much about this thing I like that I feel bad for rambling about it but I have to say EVERYTHING.

Not only are there vinyl kits, there are also silicone. Both types of kits require their own types of paint.

With vinyl, the most known paint to be used on a doll is Genesis Heat Set, which has been discontinued recently. Genesis was the most durable type of paint (at least in my opinion, because I handle my dolls a lot). You would use this paint on your vinyl kit, and paint in layers. You'd wait for the paint to dry, then place the painted piece in the oven for a bit, let it cool down, paint the next layer.

Again, since this paint has been discontinued, most artists have moved to painting with air dry on their vinyl dolls, which I'm not fond of. I have a couple dolls painted with air dry, and the paint comes off too easily, no matter how much sealant you use on the paint.

You can also use acrylic paint, but that's a given for any project. But if you're working on a vinyl doll, you'll have to seal the paint well, because if you don't it's just gonna peel off or flake with time.

I don't have any clue what sort of paint is used on silicone dolls, but I do know that you have to use paints specifically for silicone, or else it will peel right off and not stick at all.

Also, a tip for anyone that wants one of these dolls, never buy from Amazon, these will always be counterfeits of the real doll kit. There are so many other sites that sell fakes, but it would take forever to list them all. Just make sure to do the proper research beforehand.
