Alexander Borodin In the steppes of Central Asia Orchestre national de l'O.R.T.F., conductor: Charles Munch Prince Igor Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, Conductor: Pierre Monteux "In the Steps of Central Asia" is a symphonic poem composed by Alexander Borodin. Inspired by his travels through Central Asia, Borodin sought to capture the essence of the region's landscapes, culture, and musical traditions through his composition. This piece embodies Borodin's fascination with the exotic and mystic allure of Central Asia. The composition begins with a gentle and mysterious introduction, akin to the vast and enigmatic Central Asian landscapes. As the music progresses, Borodin skillfully incorporates a variety of melodic themes, evoking the vibrant and diverse cultures of the region. The piece builds up to a powerful crescendo, symbolizing the energetic spirit and dynamic nature of Central Asia. Borodin's orchestration in "In the Steps of Central Asia" is a testament to his mastery of blending Western musical techniques with Eastern influences. He seamlessly integrates traditional Central Asian melodies, rhythms, and instruments into a Western orchestral framework, creating a harmonious fusion that transports listeners to the heart of the region. "Prince Igor": "Prince Igor" is an opera composed by Alexander Borodin, although it remained unfinished at the time of his death. Inspired by Russian history and folklore, the opera tells the story of Prince Igor, a legendary figure from the 12th century. Despite its incomplete state, "Prince Igor" is revered for its beautiful melodies, lyrical arias, and stirring choral sections. The opera showcases Borodin's ability to craft memorable and emotionally charged music. From the passionate arias sung by the opera's characters to the powerful choral arrangements, "Prince Igor" captures the grandeur and dramatic intensity of Russian opera. Borodin's gift for melody and his ability to evoke a wide range of emotions through his music are evident throughout the composition. Borodin, as a member of "The Mighty Handful," a group of Russian composers dedicated to creating a distinctive nationalistic style, infused "Prince Igor" with elements of Russian folklore and traditional melodies. This infusion of Russian musical heritage, combined with Borodin's own compositional style, contributes to the opera's significance as a symbol of Russian cultural identity. The musical works of Alexander Borodin, including "In the Steps of Central Asia" and "Prince Igor," are testaments to his innovative spirit and artistry as a composer. Through these compositions, Borodin successfully merged Western and Eastern influences, creating music that captivates listeners with its evocative melodies, powerful orchestrations, and cultural significance. As we continue to explore and appreciate the works of Borodin, we gain a deeper understanding of his contributions to the world of classical music and his lasting legacy as a Russian composer.

The Oats Goat of European folklore: . In the folklore of Eastern Europe, this is the name of the spirit of the growing oats and also the name given to the figure made from the last sheaf cut from the field of growing grain. In Prussia especially, the Oats Goat is a prominent field spirit, of whom children are warned, and reapers hurry with the work to keep ahead of the Oats Goat who pushes laggards from behind. In some parts of Germany, there are two such goats, a he-goat and she-goat. In the Grenoble region of France, a live goat is decked with flowers and ribbons and turned loose in the field: when the reaping is over it is caught and killed, and roasted for the harvest supper. It's skin is then made into a cloak, which is usually worn by the farmer during the threshing of the oats, but it can be transferred to any reaper who gets a backache. In Bohemia, a mummer dressed in straw and wearing goat horns is called the Oats Goat and is led from house to house during Shrovetide celebrations. He dances in front of houses, or enters and dances with the women of the household and is given food and money. . Art: @stitching_a_laugh_to_darkness thank you! #bookreview Hey everyone, Happy weekend!! I finally finished the Winternight Trilogy, and oh my god! What a fantastic series. I am devastated crying; but laughing too, and completely in love with the characters. I love the representation of Russian culture and folklore. The final book , The Winter of the Witch ended on a really sad but beautiful note. Their was grief, but also hope and light for future. It was just amazing. Katherine Arden's writing is so heart touching. I can say for sure that, these 3 books are equally beautiful as the covers. In Slavic folklore, an Alkonost is a beautiful woman with the body of a bird. Known for having a hypnotic voice, they have the ability to immobilize people to in order to hear her song. They lay eggs along seashores, then placed into the ocean where they lay dormant until hatched, causing tumultuous storms.

The Bergman's bear of Russian folklore: . Reports of a giant bear of Kamchatka, a "God Bear" in Russian folk traditions, have circulated for centuries. In recent years, indeed, some scientific evidence has emerged to validate reports of a cryptid known as Bergman's bear. In 1920 the Swedish zoologist Sten Bergman examined the skin of a giant, black furred variety of the Kamchatka bear. Bergman wrote that the pelt "far surpassed" the size of any bearskin he had seen. Most notably, the black bears pelt was shorthaired, unlike the long coat of the normal Kamchatka bear. Bergman's 1936 paper also described a huge paw print, 15 inches by by 10.5 inches and a report of an equally outsized skull. This giant cryptid animal may well be extinct. On the other hand, it may not be. In a book called 'Bears of the world', writer Terry Domico observes that much of the Kamchatka peninsula has long been closed off for suspicious military reasons. A former Soviet official who did have access to the area told Domico that the black giants were still reported. What do you think of this cryptid? Do you reckon the military is trying to hide this giant cryptid species? And if so, why? . Art: @teroporthan thank you! ᛉ Baba Yaga ᛉ Throwback. Natures profound truth and wisdom is so evident in times like these. We are forced to slow down if we want to survive. Pollution declines, people seek out spacious nature instead of crowded indoor spaces like malls and nightclubs. It’s pretty thought-provoking. Nature always wins, nature will always prevail and it’s useful to see what role you play in it. While you stay secluded and safe, think about that 🖤 As an absolute disclaimer: I don’t think the illness is a good thing, I think it’s awfully tragic. But meeting things like this with reflection and a broader perspective can offer some comfort and enlightenment. ——————————————————————————— #babayaga #wisewoman #naturewillprevail #witchyvibes #witchesofinstagram #russianfolklore #traditionalart #gouache #carandache https://www.instagram.com/p/B94Oc7fnB7X/?igshid=1gpjs7jr23ko
