Rick and Spanish:
I’ve always wondered why he never speaks Spanish, Sanchez is obviously a Spanish name and while I get not using it with the kids or Beth because he actually cares about them understanding him, it’s totally in his character to use it with other Ricks or to piss Jerry off knowing it would drive him crazy to be talked about and have no idea what he was saying.
My main premise to this is I honestly don’t believe Rick is a no sabo kid (nothing wrong with being one BTW) I’ve done the math and if we assume Beth is 34 at the beginning of the series in 2013 (Summer must have been born 1996 when Beth was 17 and Morty would’ve come 3 years later in ‘99) that makes her birth year 1979 and presuming Rick had a slightly more planetary mindset when she was born that makes him 23-26 as was average for having kids back then, making his birth year 1953-1956.
Historically I get Beth not being taught Spanish to avoid discrimination, maybe it wouldn’t have been as bad when she was growing up but If Rick’s parents immigrated during WW2 , just before or after Rick was born or when Rick was a very young child that makes him a first gen immigrants child and while northern states were better, they weren’t great either, he would have very much been subjected to some pretty intense racism that he wouldn’t have wanted for his daughter no matter how much it hurt him to not know part of her own culture.
However I also believe Rick’s defiance streak is probably genetic and like hell he would give up his first language just to assimilate like many children of that generation may have been forced to, it was a thing in immigrant homes in America, particularly South American ones ( I’m not sure where the name Sanchez would be from specifically) where the children were banned from speaking their own languages. He however, was Rick Sanchez and would steadfastly refuse to be ashamed of himself or where he came from. It would have been a massive scandal when he married Dianne in their small town, she was most likely pretty, popular and white, he would have been heavily targeted as the schools wouldn’t have been non segregated for very long by the time he was in high school. Marrying Dianne was probably a very satisfying “Fuck you” to people who’d tormented him.
Which leads to the question why do we never hear him use Spanish. Six seasons and 40 years of heavy drinking and drug use and we never hear him slip once, and it’s not like he doesn’t screw up in other areas, language would be a simpler one. He never switches, never even swears in it, but there has to be something that triggers it.
I always imagined it would be Morty getting mortally wounded in a way that he can’t seemingly fix with what’s available to him. His June-bug is bleeding out in front of him and he can’t do shit, another person he couldn’t save. He breaks down, clutching the limp body his grandson, begging a god he doesn’t believe for the first time since his teens in a desperate mix of Spanish and English to do something, and illogically, when he thinks Morty has died, giving him what he remembers of his last rights knowing that if there’s a God the fact it’s him administering his rights is probably not doing any favours for his Grandson’s eternal soul, but then Morty miraculously coughs up blood.
He coughs up blood, not good but it means he’s alive, he can think now, he can do something, so he does.
Morty survives. Barely. He erases the memory, even he considers it too traumatic for Morty to recall, but he has to live with it, it haunts him, it haunts him in a way he hasn’t felt since his Dianne and Beth were killed in his dimension. That’s when he starts speaking to Morty in Spanish, the occasional “mijo” here, the rarer story about his upbringing there and openly conversing in Spanish with other Ricks in Morty’s presence.
Morty learns almost fluent Spanish in four months just to try and spite him. That’s his June-bug, guess Beth did pass down that competitive spirit, and some of his smarts too. It’s nice talking regularly in his mother tongue again even if he’d never tell Morty that, and it’s adorable when his grandson can’t pronounce something properly, messes up the tense of a word or stumbles in Spanish when he’s pissed off, it reminds him of a little kid. He gently corrects the tense errors under his guise of grumpy, codgery old man, Morty doesn’t even know how much better he gets.
Jerry’s pissed that he now doesn’t understand his father in law or his son, but that’s okay, it’s Jerry.

Lowder Updates
This is going to be my last post of the year. You can now request for to review something but I will not do it until I finish the Zyuohger review and it has to be something that I can legally obtain.
So, I decide to mess around with Photopea to create my new banner.
Here it is.
Tumblr media
As you can see, there are some familiar faces from Larry, Pomy, Eddie, Sonic, Rock, etc to new faces near some familiar faces. Also, I'm introducing new characters to you with those being.
Bowser Jr., Wendy, Mickey, and Oswald are the supporting characters to Larry and Pomy with Jr. and Wendy being Larry's younger siblings and Oswald and Mickey being Larry and Pomy's masters, respectively.
Rex and Cody are the supporting characters to Eddie with them being his older and younger brother, respectively, that serve as his friends that generally help each other.
Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, and Sally serve as one of half of the supporting characters for Sonic and Rock, with them being there to help both of them when they need it.
Roll, Proto, Rush, Eddie, Beat, Tango, and the Servbots serve as the other half of the supporting cast for Sonic and Rock, with them helping with more technical things, combat, or both.
Tony Tony Chopper is one of the main characters who will appear in the fifth part but for now, he dreams about becoming a doctor capable of curing any disease and is the sworn brother to Luffy, Ace, and Sabo with the reason being unknown on how he met them but he has the potential to become stronger.
You should already be familiar with Komasan and his friends if you've been on my blog long enough but if you aren't Komasan is a Yo-kai that loves Tokusatsu that became a Kamen Rider along with his childhood sweetheart and later wife, Yuki, a yuki-onna that is half Oni, Jibanyan, a nekomata that is in love with Komasan, Usapyon, an otter Yo-kai that has anger issues, and Gilgaros, an oni that is honorable to his friends, with the help Tsukasa Kadoya AKA Kamen Rider Decade, the former "Destroyer of Worlds" that serves as a mentor figure to Komasan, and Daiki Kaito AKA Kamen Rider Diend, a dimensional thief that has a British accent for some and is possibly in love with Tsukasa, even though he already is married to Natsumi, that go on to save the Yo-kai world multiple times from any evil forces.
Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Noob Saibot, and Goro are some of the main characters of Phase 2 and early-Phase 3 that will appear, with Scorpion being an undead spectre that wields fire that was killed by the elder Sub-Zero, Sub-Zero is the younger brother to Noob Saibot that became Sub-Zero after his brother was killed, Noob Saibot is a wraith that is the older brother to Sub-Zero and was the previous Sub-Zero before being killed by Scorpion and was reborn as a wraith with shadow powers, and Goro is the prince of the four-armed species known as the Shokan, that was the previous champion of Mortal Kombat before losing to Liu Kang and went on to wield the spirit of Onaga the dragon king but was saved by Scorpion and Shujinko with Goro joining the Shirai Ryu after his life was saved by Scorpion and Shujinko but still has a part of Onaga's soul in his body that allows to gain wings.
Spider-Ham, Ch'p, Peni, and Lobo are main characters that will appear in Phase 2 after the beginning part and throughout the entirety of Phase 3, with Spider-Ham being a spider bitten by a radioactive pig that became Spider-Ham and gained cosmic powers accidently, Ch'p is a H'lvenite, squirrel-like aliens, that gained a Green Lantern ring and serves as the best friend to Ham, Peni is a girl that was bitten by a radioactive spider to pilot a mech called the SP//dr to help her friends and other heroes, and Lobo is an alien bounty hunter that is the last of species after he killed all of them for his science project, he helps Ham and Ch'p with his skills and healing factor.
If you are asking about the other characters, those are meant to represent most of the first batch of Lowder Reviews and previous reviews. I will see you next time when I create magic with the Lowder-verse. So, Merry Christmas or whatever you celebrate and Happy New Year. Also, this is my 100th post so uh happy 100th post.

hiii, how are you? may i ask angst alphabet for Ace? thank you ❤️
Tumblr media
Angst Alphabet - Portgas D. Ace
Tumblr media
a/n: hi hi!! here you go! OMG angst is still really hard LOL I don’t want to think about their rough life 😔😔😔😔😔 ANYWHOOOOO thank you for requesting and I hope you enjoy<3
warnings: on the letter S there is mention of self harm
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A-Accident (would they blame themselves if you died in an accident?)
Ace would definitely blame himself. He’s always thought he was a no-good demon child, son of a criminal that didn’t deserve to be alive (despite finding people that truly cared and loved him). You dying in an accident and him not being able to do anything about it would just reinforce what he already thinks of himself.
Regardless of your cause of death he is likely to attribute it to your association with himself, and because of that he will think it is entirely his fault, even if he wasn’t present at the time of your death.
B-Break up (How would they break up with you?)
His lessons with Makino really helped him develop manners and just a general sense of acceptable behaviour. So, Ace would just be clear and up front, no mixed messages, no miscommunication. He would take you some place quiet and away from others, and then he would be as honest and vulnerable as possible – it’s the least you deserve. The break-up would be very civil, you would definitely end on good terms (doesn’t make it any less sad though).
C-Crying (how would they make you cry?)
Sometimes Ace can take his teasing a little too far. Usually you can handle it, but there are just some days where his words cut deeper than ever intended (even if they have no malice behind them). It’s not his fault you’re having a bad day, or not realizing you are having a bad day. It’s just one of those things that happens sometimes. As soon as you start to cry though, he apologizes and reassures you so much, to make sure you known he doesn’t mean it and he’s only playing around.
D-Death (how would they react to your death?)
It would start out with a lot of confusion, like “what t-that must be some kind of a sick joke. H-how… w-what… they wouldn’t just die like that.” After it really sinks in that you have in fact died, Ace will just get angry. I don’t see him as much of a crier (spoiler alert – we only see him truly allow himself to cry on two occasions 1) when luffy got crazy hurt as a child and 2) when ace was on deaths door), so I believe he would react with anger.
Regardless of your cause of death (natural causes, accident, died in battle etc.) Ace would be unbelievably angry with himself, the world and you. He would be angry at himself for being unable to save you, someone he cares about and loves deeply. He would be angry at the world and whatever higher being there may be for choosing now to be your time. There are so many horrible, horrible people in the world, yet you had to die? It makes no sense. Lastly, he would be angry at you. Not a genuine anger but more so a “how could you just leave me like this? We were meant to be together forever.”
E-Emotion (what is one emotion they would try to hide the most and how would they do it?)
I think Ace tends to try his sadness. He tries to put on a brave face, not wanting anyone to see him cry as he doesn’t want to be viewed as weak or be even more of a burden on others.
F-Fight (how often do you fight? What do you fight about? Do you fight often? Etc.)
Fights with Ace, although they don’t happen often, can quickly get out of hand. He’s stubborn and his inability to accept that he’s not always right can cause a minor disagreement to escalate into an all-out fight. On a few occasions you have argued about him never turning his back on an opponent.
Your fights tend to be followed by cooldown time. Things can get quite heated (no pun intended) so you need some alone time and space to breathe. After that though, you comeback together and apologize.
G-Guilt (what is the biggest thing they feel guilty about?)
For his entire life, Ace has lived with the guilt of simply existing. He doesn’t think himself worthy of being alive. Can you blame him? It’s all anyone ever told him growing up. Despite eventually finding people who loved him for him, those feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness still remain and continue to plague his mind.
H-Heartbreak (what would cause them pain in the relationship? How would they deal during a break-up?)
During a break-up Ace is quiet. He doesn’t want to be around anyone or anything. He wants to be left completely alone so he can sort out his thoughts and feelings. He’d be quite devasted because he’s had so few people in his life love him on as deep a level as you did.
I-Injured (how would they react if you are badly injured?)
Ace would absolutely lose it if you were injured. He’d be concerned, upset, and angry all at once. First things first, he needs to know if you are going to be ok. Once that’s been established, he’ll be upset at himself for allowing this to happen. This will be replaced by the pure anger he feels at whoever, or whatever, caused this.
J-Jealousy (what do they do if they are jealous?)
When he gets jealous he turns into such a man child. He’s pouting and moping around while mumbling to himself. He develops quite a petty attitude. If you were to ask him “want to go get something to eat?” he’d respond with “why don’t you just go and ask ____ for some food.” But, as soon as you begin commenting on how jealous he’s acting he’s going to deny it to the end of his days.
K-Kill (would they kill for revenge?)
Ace literally hunted down Blackbeard so he could get revenge on him for killing Thatch. It’s not certain whether or not Ace had the intention of killing Blackbeard, however, he definitely had both the spirit and anger to go through with killing him. So, it is possible that Ace would kill for revenge. However, for the most part, he would prefer to just beat them senseless.
L-Loss (what is their greatest loss?)
Either Sabo or his mother’s death, would be considered Ace’s greatest loss. His mother died when he was a new-born, so he doesn’t particularly remember, or know, anything about her other than the fact that she was a kind wonderful woman. However, the loss of Sabo is something he remembers vividly. Losing Sabo had a major impact on Ace. It was an unfortunate wake up call as to how awful the world truly is.
M-Mistake (what is the worst mistake they ever made with you?)
One night, after a particularly bad day filled with a horrible series of events, Ace was letting off some steam (quite literally I suppose). Messing with his devil fruit power, throwing some flames around. He hadn’t noticed your presence and so his flames nearly burnt you. He was horrified, and he only felt worse after he noticed the pure terror in your eyes.
N-Nightmares (how often do they have them? What are they about? How do they deal with it?
Ace has nightmares frequently, they vary, but they all have the same underlying theme, that is, the people in his life don’t actually care about him and only view him the same way everyone else views the son of the pirate kind – a worthless devil with no right to life. He wakes up from his dreams in a sweat and finds himself in desperate need of fresh air (ya know to try and clear his mind). He ends up just sitting out on the deck of the Moby Dick looking up at the sky trying to tell himself it was all a dream. But his insecurity and self-doubt begin to resurface and soon he can’t discern imagination from reality. However, the moment someone else on the crew even speaks to Ace with something as simple as a “morning dude” he’s brought back down to earth and thinks to himself “no that’s right…. They love me… I wouldn’t be here right now if they didn’t.”
It’s a vicious cycle, but in the end, he manages to remember (even if it’s just for a little bit) that he is cherished.
O-Outrage (how and why would they get mad at you?)
When you continuously tell him there’s no need to stay and fight every single opponent. It’s okay to turn and runaway – in fact it’s safer to do that. When you say that he feels as though you don’t understand him. He’s not some careless, impulsive child who’s just looking for a fight (okay maybe he is a little bit). So he doesn’t really get super angry, it’s more so that he is frustrated and a little upset that you don’t try to see it from his perspective.
P-Past (what has happened in your relationship that changed the way you saw each other?)
It’s the same as the worst mistake he’s ever made with you – nearly burning you with his devil fruit. It made you realize that Ace can actually be quite dangerous (although you know he would NEVER hurt you intentionally). It made Ace realize that he needs to be more careful, the look of pure terror in your eyes has stayed with him ever since that incident, serving as a reminder.
Q-Quality (what is their most dangerous/toxic quality?)
His tendency to not back down from a fight is simultaneously his most endearing and toxic trait. He constantly places himself in dangerous situations with minimal concern for his own safety.
R-Rejection (how would they react to you rejecting their confession (or the other way around))
Having his confession rejected by you was definitely a blow to his self-esteem, but he respected and accepted your feelings. Instead of moping around about it he decides to laugh it off, trying to make light of a slightly disappointing situation.
S-Scars (battle or self-inflicted)
Ace does not have any scars, battle related or self-inflicted.
TW self-harm: I do think ace got worryingly close to self-harming, but Sabo and Luffy made him rethink it all.
T-Trust (have they ever broken your trust?)
The one and only time Ace broke your trust was after Blackbeards betrayal. You made him promise to take you with him when he left to hunt down Blackbeard because you didn’t want him to go alone. He promised but he had no intention of keeping that promise.
U-Urge (how badly do they want to see you after you guys separated?)
For a while Ace manages to get by by keeping himself preoccupied. But as soon as he lets up for even a minute, he realizes how much he misses you and is beyond tempted to just sail on back to wherever you are and tackle you to the ground plastering your face in lil kisses. When he’s not distracted, he really does miss you a lot. He hyper-fixates on what you could be doing at this very moment, whether or not you miss him too etc.
V-Vicious (what do they do when they lash out on you?)
When ace gets mad, he tends to get very loud. He raises his voice quite a lot and it becomes very, very frightening. He would never physically hurt you, but the anger and frustration in his voice is more than another to scare the shit out of you.
W-Weak (what makes them feel weak how do they try to avoid it?)
Constantly being reminded or associated with the Pirate King. Maybe it doesn’t make him feel weak, but it makes him feel horrible inside and stirs up a lot of feelings and remarks people would make when he was younger. Unfortunately, once word gets out there isn’t much Ace can do to stop this from happening, however, before this, Ace avoided this by not telling ANYONE. He only told Luffy and Sabo, with a very small handful of others knowing (i.e Garp).
X-X-ray (what do they hate and show it most obviously?)
He hates turning his back on a fight or turning his back on people that talk shit about those he cares about. This is seen during the Marineford arc. He doesn’t let Akainus words about Whitebeard slide. He doesn’t runaway. He has no tolerance for that shit.
Y-Yearn (what is one thing that they want but can’t have?)
Ok this may be dark as hell but, Ace just wants to not feel like a burden to the world. He wants to be viewed as something different/separate from his father, but he can’t change history.
Z-Zero (what do they do/say in your dying moments?)
He doesn’t let you go. He’ll hold on to you until he is forcefully separated from your body. He just starts to spout a lot of nonsense – things don’t make sense at all, but he can’t help it right now. He can’t think properly when you’re about to leave him. He just wants you to stay.

The home island of Whitebeard was a beautiful place nestled away in a valley hidden from prying eyes. You could only imagine what it once looked like; according to the elders, it was disarray. If only the residents knew who had given so much for the place where he grew up. Coming here with Marco was the best decision you had made since the disbandment of the remaining crew.
The sun was high in the sky as you made your way through the village, fresh produce in your grasp. You were greeted with welcoming hellos as you made your way to the edge of the town. Far up on the hillside resided the cottage which you shared with your lover. The sight of the doctor and the mink Nekomamushi made your heart warm. You knew the reunion of the two had been a heartfelt one.
You walked up the hill just as Marco let out a loud laugh which made the mink join him. They both turned as you stopped before them both Marco smiled at you as you shifted the basket in your grasp.
“(Name)-yoi,” Marco said as he took your appearance in.
“Marco-yoi,” You said back teasingly as Nekomamushi let out a laugh.
“I can see why now you like this one so much, Marco!” the mink said as you snorted.
Marco just sighed as he shook his head, “Yeah, yeah.”
“I’m going to start dinner. Are you joining us, Neko?”
The mink shook his head as he explained he would be heading out soon. Nodding you head into the home and set about making dinner.
You never imagined two years ago you would be here with Marco of all of the people. Though the world worked in strange ways, you supposed. You never had a personal attachment towards him, yes he was a comrade on board the ship, but your time was spent with navigation. The weather was your calling, and even now, your days were spent predicting the weather for the coming harvesting season.
Unsure of where you wanted to go after the pay-back war, you decided to tag along with Marco. The doctor was a rather sweet man with a mischievous streak about him. He made you laugh, and you reassured him when he was having a bad day. It all worked out in the end, looking up from cutting the vegetables. You noticed the orange rays through the window. The sun was finally getting ready to set, it seemed.
Marco hadn’t come in yet, so grabbing a rag, you cleaned your hands and went to find him. Opening the door, you peak out and notice he isn’t anywhere in sight. You frowned, knowing where he probably went off to.
Not far from the village was a field that overlooked the ocean and in that field was a hill with two graves that sat atop it. The heartache you felt seeing them so often soon became bearable. Though for someone like Marco, it was hard, and you often found him here when he was troubled.
It really was a beautiful sight with the lush greenery and the view of the water perfect for two free spirits. As you walked closer, you could clearly see Marco sat in front of Ace’s grave with Luffy’s fresh bounty in his hand. It had arrived with the paper only this morning, along with news of Sabo and the revolutionaries.
Finally making your way up the hill, you stood behind him as he turned to look up at you. You smiled as you reached out and squeezed his shoulder. He returned with his own smile as he went back and sat both articles of paper on the wooden crate.
“He would be proud of them both, you know, and I know he’s grateful for you keeping him updated.” You spoke softly.
Marco hummed as he sighed and finally stood up a wince on his face as he stretched. You laughed, which made him pout as he glared over at you.
“You are getting old there, birdy ~” You teased.
Marco just huffed and leaned down, taking your hand in his and squeezed it.
“Dinner is almost ready; I was wondering where you had wandered off to.”
Marco looked down at you and smiled at you softly as he lifted your hand and kissed it softly. A dusting of pink appeared on your face as the action your ears turned red as he peaked up at you. The lazy expression on his face had you memorized as he kissed your hand again before releasing it.
“Marco,” You whispered.
“(Name), I’m leaving for Wano yoi.” Marco finally said, your eyes widening at his confession.
Your posture stiffens at this, not in a maddening way more of worry because you knew what that entailed. “I won’t stop you, of course.....but I am worried.” You confess.
Marco sighed heavily as he wrapped his arm around you and brought you closer to him.
“I know, but I need to go,” He paused as he whispered the next part. “I wasn’t able to Blackbeard, but maybe I can stop Kaido and makeup for the time we didn’t know in the past.”
You hummed as you hugged him closer to you as he buried his face into your neck.
“You do what you need to do, alright.” You say as you pull away to look up at him; his face pulled into a frown.
You reached up and placed a hand on his face stroking it softly over the roughness of his beard. You pulled his face closer to your own and kissed him thoroughly with a softness to it. He hummed into the kiss as he pulled you closer to him again.
You pulled away with a heavy breath. “I’ll be here when you get back, alright? So don’t keep me waiting.”
Marco grinned at your statement, the last of the sun’s rays danced across his glasses as they shimmered in the light. He wrapped an arm around your shoulder as he began descending from the hill.
“Don’t worry, I will come back, I promise,” Marco said, making you smile, knowing his words rang true.

A Comprehensive Analysis of Eustass 'Captain' Kid
I've been wanting to write this for awhile now as Kid is undoubtedly one of my favourite characters in One Piece. Also, I'm majoring in Psychology so I can't help but think about why I love his character so much.
Disclaimer: As we all know, Kid doesn't have much screentime so it's quite difficult to understand his character completely. So, whatever you read will be my own intepretation of his character (based on the little amount of scenes that he has). Of course, you don't have to agree with it but it might give you a bit of a different perspective!
So, withour further ado, let's begin!
*P.s I'll try to make it flow in but it might end up really messy so I apologize for that*
Note: NOT SPOILER FREE!!!
1. Assumptions
I guess I'll begin with some of the common assumptions of his character based on posts/videos I've seen about his character. They frequently refer to Kid as 'cruel' or 'heartless'. Basically, there are many negative remarks about his character that makes him seem like a total psychopath.
Their reasoning for this would be because:
- He mentioned that he would kill anyone would mocked him
- His high bounty = He's notorious & violent
- The way he acts makes him come off as a bloodthirsty pirate
From another standpoint, I can see why people might think that way about him. The way he speaks and acts does make him look villainous. In addition, his primary role in One Piece is to be Luffy's rival. (I'll expand on this point later.) So, one might think that his morals would contrast Luffy. Whereas Luffy is the kind and benevolent pirate, Kid is the 'bad guy' who is cruel and heartless. The question is, though Kid is rival character, why does that necessarily mean that he would be a bad guy? I strongly disagree that Kid is a psychopath and that he is heartless. Firstly, the term 'psychopath' shouldn't be used so loosely. A true psychopath would have no regard for other's feelings which is not true of Kid because he cares very much for his crew. On the other hand, Doflamingo would be a good example of a psychopath. Next, even if Kid WERE a psychopath, not all psychopaths are violent. So it'd be nice if people stopped misrepresenting psychopaths.
Now, if there is one thing I learned in psychology, is that people tend to make assumptions about a person's actions as part of their personal dispositions rather than because of situation. This would be the Fundamental Attribution Error (FAE). What do I mean by this? Let's take a look at Kid's scenario. He mentioned killing people who mocked his dream. Killing people would make people automatically assume that Kid is 'violent'. But here is a different perspective, what if 'mocking him' had meant that they tried to start a fight with him? Provoking other people repeatedly would cause anybody to get angry. There are many other characters who acts this way as well. Sure, Luffy doesn't go as far as to kill them but I'm sure that many other characters do because they are PIRATES.
In contrast, I think of this situation as Kid standing up for himself. He believes in himself and he would beat anyone up who tells him otherwise. If you think about it, Luffy is kind of similar because he ends up fighting anyone who tries to stop him from attaining his goal.
That is pretty much all the assumptions that people make about his character. It's sad how they don't delve deeper but fret not!! I still have more to say.
2. Pre-Timeskip vs Timeskip Changes/Growth as a character
During Pre-timeskip, Kid is seen as overconfident. I actually agree with this statement quite a lot. His high bounty was a result of his reckless behaviour. He could easily triumph over anyone before the timeskip. That was when he started to become a little too full of himself. Consequently, he suffered heavy losses. His arm was taken by Shanks, his crew was utterly defeated by Kaido (curse you Apoo) and his reputation as the top supernova was instantly lost to Luffy. His true character development was in the Wano arc where we see how he starts to take a step back and re-evaluate his situation. The most obvious evidence for this was when he got captured in Udon. He was quiet (before Luffy's arrival) and deep in thought. So many things had happened to him, you could even argue that he was feeling slightly lost and helpless (not depressed) because he was utterly defeated. The motivation and drive he had in pre-timeskip was shattered- Until Luffy arrived of course. When Luffy arrived, he was battered and bruised but he was still ready to fight. Kid, who saw how Luffy still had his fighting spirit, was somehow inspired to keep on fighting. It's almost as if Luffy is Kid's drive to be stronger.
So, what does this all say about Kid?
I think that this makes his character believable as it can represent real life. There are some points in our lives where we could be the greatest but, sometimes, life can be pretty cruel too. If you get too cocky or overconfident, the world will punish you. I saw a comment that says Kid is Luffy but without the plot armour. That is very true. Kid isn't perfect. He made tons of crappy decisions and dealt which the consequences. I'd say he's as reckless as Luffy, perhaps LESS reckless than Luffy but he suffers more than Luffy does. While Luffy could bask in glory, all Kid got was the short end of the stick. I think that is the reason why I find Kid such an appealing character- because its an accurate representation of real life. Sometimes you can try as hard as someone else but you won't always get the spolight.
The other appealing aspect is his persistence. He made mistakes and bad decisions but he knows that he can't undo them and has to move on. Kid isn't as lucky as Luffy because he didn't have someone like Rayleigh to train him so, he had to put in more effort somehow. The main point is, he had to learn everything the hard way. Yet, he still strives to be the best which is very befitting of a rival character.
3. interactions & Personality
Another thing I frequently see when people Kid and Luffy is that: People say that while Kid makes enemies, Luffy makes allies which is why he has so much support from others around him. I was thinking about this a lot and I can't help but disgaree. I saw another post where they mentioned Kid's MBTI personality is INFJ which made me think even more about that statement. From here on, I will include several headcanons about his character as well.
Let me offer you a different perspective. Perhaps Kid isn't good at expressing his feelings. The way he speaks may come off as cold which makes other people dislike him because they think he is rude whereas he simply doesn't know how to communicate with others very well. Luffy is no doubt an extrovert, seeing how he is easily able to interact with others. Kid on the other hand, if he is an introvert, it could be an explaination to why he doesn't have many interactions with others. I don't see him as someone who's very 'sociable'. So he could experience some difficulty when communicating his feelings. He's shown to be closer to his crew more than anyone else. He is deeply respected by his crewmates because he is sensitive to their needs as well. He isn't the tyrant that everyone paints him to be, he earned that respect by first respecting his crewmates. Also, he would essentially DIE for any of his crewmates. This part is quite self explainatory if you've read the chapter where they revealed what happened to Kid and Killer in Wano.
I just want to add that while Killer suffered so much in Wano, imagine how much it hurt Kid to see his first mate suffer and how he couldn't do anything about it. The expression on his face is perfectly the anger he had towards Kaido, Apoo and more importantly, HIMSELF for not being strong enough. Yet, people call him heartless though he would literally die for Killer.
But anyways, Kid is an excellent listener and he cares very deeply for people he is close to. I just think he's bad at communicating. Look at the way he talks to Luffy. In Wano, you can see how Kid actually does LIKE Luffy as a rival. He just has trouble expressing himself. Anyways, this is just a headcanon but I think that he's rather sensitive to other's feelings- Especially when it comes to his crew. I really like the idea that he's an INFJ because he seems more like the 'advocate' type of character. I still think he makes a very good leader but his approach would contrast Luffy's.
4. Intelligence
I could probaly go on forever about why I love Kid but this is another thing that I see about Kid and kind of annoys me. I'm not sure why everyone seems to think he's a dumbass. Like REALLY. I think he's pretty intelligent. He even kept tabs on the whole SMILE situation and Doflamingo and planned the alliance. He IS intelligent but his recklessness just makes him seem like an idiot.
Kid isn't perfect, he is flawed just like a real human being would be. By no means is he a GOOD person but I don't think he is as 'cruel' or 'bad' as people paint him to be. He cares a lot for his crew. He is very driven by his own personal values and he wouldn't 'change' for anyone. He believes in himself and if anyone tells him otherwise, he would simply beat them up. He isn't happy go lucky like Luffy, he is much deeper than that. He would consider his options and plan- to a certain extent because he is also quite idealistic. Hence, the reason why I feel like his character is such an interesting one is because there is a lot of opportunity for him to grow and stray away from stereotypical anime character traits. His character is believable because his personality is realistic, it could reflect a real human being.
TLDR: Stop sleeping on Kid.
With that, thanks for coming to my ted talk.
Anyways, that's it for now! I'll make a part 2 if I feel like I want to add something. If people like this, I'll consider making another analysis for other characters. Currently I have Law, Ace and Sabo planned in mind but we'll see how it goes.
Thanks for reading!

I heard you wanted more Sabo fanfics, @akemichan007, so here you are (I’m sorry in advance). This short story was inspired by the “whump” prompt in my card for the One Piece Bingo hosted by @op-pirate-fleet.
Dying Flame Sabo woke up to the metallic taste of blood in his mouth.   He slowly opened his eyes but couldn’t see anything in the complete darkness. He tried to stand up despite his aching body, but he was chained to a wall and could only twitch his fingers or turn his head. As soon as he did the latter, though, he felt a sharp pain in his stomach and coughed more blood. An internal injury, probably.   I feel weak…ad cold.   Cold? Since when could he feel cold, now that he was fire itself? He had eaten his late brother’s Devil Fruit, the Mera Mera no Mi. He could turn into fire now; he had even mastered the fruit! His flames were so hot they turned blue-white, so why was he trembling?   Am I dying?   If he had an internal haemorrhage, probably he was. Sabo pulled on his chains with all his remaining strength, but he couldn’t get free of them.      Seastone?   That substance made Devil Fruit users like him lose their strength and feel a horrible sensation similar to drowning. Sabo felt nauseous, but he still tried to focus on his surroundings: he couldn’t see anything, but he still had his other senses.   And Observation Haki.   He could smell blood and some other unpleasant things. Probably, he was locked into some prison. Where, though? His best guess was Mary Geoise’s underground, but he couldn’t be sure of that yet. He felt dampness on his kin. Naked skin. Someone had removed his clothes and boots—his hat, even! He only wore his pants now, but their fabric was tattered and dirty. Next, he focused on sounds. The silence was almost absolute, only rarely broken by distant sobs and cries. Just once, he heard a high-pitched scream. He didn’t want to think what it was about, even if he probably knew the answer already. Finally, Sabo used his Haki. He could feel his “ambition” slipping away, but he was still able to detect the presences of a few other people in the dungeon—or whatever that place was. Some of them were just feeble presences—probably coming from injured or tortured prisoners—but others belonged to guards. He didn’t feel maleficence radiating from them, but just cold indifference—which was even worse. Anyway, he recognised those auras.   I’m still in Mary Geoise, and I’ve messed up.   The original plan was to declare war on the Celestial Dragons, but then he and his comrades had decided to save Kuma as well: a revolutionary like them whom the World Nobles had enslaved. It had been risky, but the rescue had been successful. However, another unexpected event had made things go downhill for them.   But I couldn’t let those bastards kill Luffy’s friend!   So, he had rushed to save Nefertari Vivi after leaving Kuma to Karasu and the others.   I hope you made it out of this damned place safely…   Mary Geoise reeked of arrogance, prejudices, and injustice. There, slaves died day after day both under the sunlight and in the depth of darkness, unseen by anyone.   And they have the nerve to call this place the “Holy Land”!   Sabo spat blood mixed with disgust. He needed to be out of there, but how? At least, he had managed to save Vivi. The princess of Alabasta should have left the Red Line at this point and should be searching for his brother using the vivre card he gave her. Her father hadn’t been that lucky, though: when Sabo had arrived on the scene, he was already dead. The late king had shielded his daughter, saving her from the CP0 members that had attacked them.   Sabo wasn’t fond of monarchy, to put it mildly. There were better forms of government, and monarchs were horrible people for the most part. However, the Alabasta rulers were different. Their ancestors had refused to leave their people behind, and instead of becoming Celestial Dragons like the other families that had created the current World Government, they had remained just regular nobles. Sabo grimaced, remembering some very different nobles—his family.   No, they have never been my family. The Revolutionary Army is.   The Nefertari, however, were admirable people. Now, Vivi was the last living member of their dynasty, and she would search Luffy for help.   What are you doing now, little brother?   Sabo tried not to think about him but to no avail. To make matters worse, his predicament was probably similar to what his other brother had gone through before dying.   Did it hurt so much for you too, Ace?   Luffy would be devastated to learn that his only remaining brother had been sentenced to death too, accused of a crime he had not committed. Sabo gritted his teeth, remorse and pain clutching at his chest. The weight of his failure and its consequences was suffocating, and his rapid breathing and heart rate made him feel dizzy. He couldn’t accept the idea, but he wouldn’t survive long enough even to step on the scaffold—one last chance to get his freedom back somehow. No, he would die in that dark cell, alone.   I’m sorry, Luffy. I’m sorry, Dragon, Koala…my friends!   Sabo had often asked himself what Ace had felt in his last moments, and now he probably knew. He wanted to scream all his frustration and pain but felt too weak even for that. He pulled at his chains again, desperately, only gaining more wounds around his wrists. He panted in that damp, lonely darkness until his breathing returned normal, trying to calm down. However, all he could think of was his failure, his comrades in the Revolutionary Army, his younger brother.   Forgive me, Luffy…everyone!   Since joining the revolutionaries and even before getting his memories back, Sabo had known that his life would have been probably short. As a pirate, Ace must have thought the same, too. They all chose their own path, and there was no point regretting it now. Sabo knew it, but it still hurt. It hurt that he hadn’t been able to taste full freedom in his life yet. It hurt that he hadn’t been able to party together with Luffy. It hurt that he had never completely opened his heart to his closest comrade.   Will you cry, Koala?   Heck! Probably Dragon, their stoic commander, would cry too upon learning about his death. Sabo owned him everything: a new life, a place to belong, a goal. He closed his hands in tight fists as he realised that, without him, the whole army was at risk. Dragon’s lifetime goal itself was at stake: Sabo knew he was the strongest among them, but he was getting old.   And I won’t be next to you in your final fight.   The awareness of that hit him hard, especially now that he knew the time of reckoning was near. The Celestial Dragons had gone too far by killing the king of Alabasta and attempting on his daughter’s life. They had grown too arrogant—even for their standards. They wanted to suppress any flame, any spark of rebellion, but that would make the freedom-seeking spirit always latent in people only grow stronger. Sabo’s only consolation was that, even if Dragon’s plan would fail, there was no way his younger brother at least wouldn’t change the world.   A world so rotten that any change would be for the better at this point.   Sabo coughed more blood as numbness was slowly replacing pain. That wasn’t a good sign.   How much do I have left? Days? Hours?   Sabo smiled bitterly. All of his life, he had searched for freedom and its meaning; yet, he would die in an underground prison.   Away from the sun, away from the people I love, away from the wind and the waves...   Even if it didn’t make any difference, he closed his eyes. No, it did make a difference. Now, instead of darkness, Sabo saw his memories. His precious childhood memories with his beloved brothers, when they were still young and untainted by the cruel world.   No, we were tainted even back then.   Sabo had met Ace not long after running away from his home, and Ace had been distant and cold at him at first—aggressive even. His first brother had suffered for the “sin” of being the late Pirate King's child, despised by most people even before they learned of his existence. Sabo, instead, had lived in a cage, unloved by his own parents and with his whole life already planned for him. And Luffy, despite his smiles and eyes always brimming with life, had had something dark buried in the depth of his heart, too.   Loneliness.   Sabo didn’t blame Dragon for cutting ties with his son, but Luffy had suffered because of it. Without a mother, without a father, and only a rude grandfather taking “care” of him sometimes. But then, the three of them had become brothers, and Luffy hadn't been alone anymore. Unrestrained, tears fell from Sabo’s eyes and flowed down his face, slightly warmer than his skin.   At least I’ll see you again soon, Ace.   Sabo reclined his head on his chest, feeling his life draining away.   Farewell…little brother.   After that last thought, the young revolutionary stopped fighting the torpor pervading him. Later that day, the brightest of flames died in the underground of Mary Geoise: far from the forests full of adventures, far from the ocean overflowing with dreams, far from the freedom-whispering wind. That same day, historians agreed, marked the start of the Revolution.

More University Headcanons!
Straw Hat Pirates Edition
Luffy
He's studying to become a photographer because he looked up to Roger, who himself was a professional photographer during the time he was alive.
Another reason for this is the fact that photographers get to see a lot of things their life, sometimes even danger, it's like an adventure.
Like most of his friends, he resides in Gold dorm and has done his fair share of stealing furniture for it.
He keeps a diary which he decorates with cute stickers and Polaroids.
He has a good eye, which helps him with setting the camera in just right way to get the perfect shot.
He's one of the louder residents which often makes people who need the silence to concentrate, like Law, go absolutely bonkers.
He's banned from the kitchen.
He keeps dragging people into the dorm.
Somehow? You just can't hate him.
Zoro
Decided to study social work when he realised how unfair the world could be.
Is also in the kendo club which he joined upon learning that the person who is seen as the best is its captain, he intends to best him.
Currently he supports one hundred and fifty-one wins and one loss.
The only loss was against Mihawk.
He's naturally good when it comes to dealing with people, but he truly shines when he's around kids.
He's often helping around the dorm by moving large objects in/out.
He was the one to clear the large area which later on came to support the workout area and the garden.
He often takes strolls on the woods located behind the dorm, he's easily the scariest being there.
His sense of direction is so bad that he was given his own device which tells him his location and how to get to the place he wants to go to. This device was made by Eustass and Usopp with Law telling them to turn it into a wrist watch which also measures Zoro's vitals so he can monitor his own health and sport related achievements. The data of his vital signs is transferred into his phone.
Usopp
He majors in engineering and thrives when it comes to inventions, his secondary is English literature.
He writes plays and stories on his spare time, some of them are pitched to the theatre club and art majors.
He's good at crafting and thus is often seen working on something for the dorm like name signs that all match the personalities of the residents.
He was the one who thought of turning the street sign poles into a fence around the dorm's garden.
He's also in charge of modifying the stolen property to ensure that nobody realises where they originally came from.
He was the one who turned that one car into a bed after he moved it inside in pieces. The car bed is in a room called "Silence Room" which was made to have no sounds get in or out of it. He and Killer designed the interior of it to help those who have hyper senses and are more proun to headaches (or just can't stand being around people too long). It's also used as a guest room from time to time.
He works the best with people who are smart like Sanji, Law and Eustass, he also gets very well along Chopper, the therapy dog that goes around the campus.
He's free spirited goof ball with very wide interests who gets along with almost everybody.
Being the jokester of the lot is his attempt to have people think of him as a good guy to be around with and to see that he's not just brain.
He struggles with seeing his own self worth and is very proun to feeling melancholic due to his high Intel making him realise things that he'd rather not know of. He has a low self-esteem because of being dismissed as a child due to his dreams and goals being too ahead of his time.
Sanji
Culinary arts and management major.
He was raised in a foster home, more specifically by the owner of the Baratier restaurant Zeff who he considers to be his dad more than his biological father.
He was kicked out of the Vinsmoke estate by his father Judge due to his wish to be a chef instead of becoming a lawyer or a doctor or a politician.
Technically he's still eligible of inheriting the throne of Germa Kingdom even if he was exiled.
He's still expected to marry a high class member of the society and thus Judge keeps messaging him about his choices, fully believing that Sanji will one day see his way and abandon his dream of being a chef in favour of the kingdom.
He even has a fiancé, Charlotte Pudding, though he never agreed to the scheme that was orchestrated by Vinsmoke Judge and Charlotte Linlin. Pudding also isn't too happy about the situation.
His foster father is the actual lecturer in charge of the culinary studies, but as he was in an accident and thus hospitalised, Charlotte Linlin is subbing him much to Sanji's demise.
He's one of the few people who who can cook in the dorm and he takes notice of other people's likes, dislikes and allergies.
Sanji's kindness is often noticed by others.
Nami
She's a architecture major, her second interest being banking.
When she moved into the dorm, she quickly noticed that the students who renovated it had no idea how things worked, so she had them redo few things. The dorm is now a lot easier to keep warm during the winter.
She was the one to pitch the idea of the Silent Room upon noticing how Law was struggling because of how loud the dorm had become as a result of the new first years moving in.
She works part time as a waitress at Baratier and she is known for her ability to negotiate the costs a lot lower that they usually would be.
She's a bit of a kleptomaniac, result of her growing up on a poor and unsafe area dictated by gangs.
She's also a honours student, who's part of the special program which basically ensures that she has enough money to buy her school items and food.
She often chats with the local witch coven to obtain more information, she also likes to hangout with Killer and Usopp.
Her best friend Vivi Nefertari is currently in an exchange program.
Chopper
A golden retriever akita mix.
He was originally Sabo's therapy dog, nowadays he's more or less the therapy dog of anyone who needs him. He still sticks by Sabo for the most of the time.
He's broken into the classrooms during lectures to deliver forgotten items to Sabo so often that he has his own attendance record and he's almost considered to be a student at this point.
His job includes going to the local pharmacy every Friday to pick up a specifically constructed herbal infusion packet and bring it to the Lair.
He's highly intelligent dog who was capable of deducing which herbs were part of the herbal infusion treatment and then retrieve the plants based on their scent.
He picked these herbs and spices from the garden of Gold Dorm.
His bestfriend is Bepo, a samoyed owned by Law, who also happens to be the only other dog on the campus.
Robin
Social Work major, secondary studies in history.
She chose her line of studies due to wanting to prevent other kids being forced to go through the same kind of neglect and abuse as she did.
She's fluent in multiple languages and writes her notes in one of the dead languages, which she self taught herself to read.
She prefers to keep her information confidential and she enjoys the confusion some of her antics cause.
She takes part in the weekly movie night and enjoys them greatly.
Franky
Robotics major.
The only member of the group who doesn't live in a dorm. Nobody knows if he even sleeps or eats, but if you need him, you can always find him form the workshop.
You need to drag him out forcibly to have him even leave the room.
Thanks to Luffy, he now visits the Gold dorm few times a week to hangout, but the second he sees something that gives him an idea, he bolts out back to the workshop.
100% workaholic, 0% sleep, 120% Cola.
Brook
Actual university cryptid.
Is literally dead and walking around.
Formerly a music major.
Nobody knows how long he's been there and frankly nobody cares, his flamboyant style is a mood and his cravings for food and drinks is something we all relate to.
He knows every nook and cranny of the campus.
He's been there so long that nobody even questions it and he even gets invited to university parties and to hang out.
The only time someone freaked out was when the group went to a fast food restaurant and forgot that the outside world isn't aware of him. He tipped the waiter generously with something that looked like an old coin. It was probably worth more than the whole restaurant.
If you talk to him, there's 80% chance of you triggering his natural response to anything which is singing and dancing.
He's literally a walking musical.
He's one of the few who has heard Katakuri's doughnut song and lived to tell the tale. Except that he's dead already yohohoho.
He's very likely to console you if you're not feeling okay.
When it comes to the modern technology and stuff, he's a bit confused, but has the right spirit.
Jinbe
The current captain of the karate club.
Nobody knows what he majors in nor from which dorm he's from.
When Shirahoshi from Atlantis (=Fishman Island) started her studies in the University, he was quick to form a protection team to her and her brothers from the members of the karate club.
He might be the instructor of the club? Apparently he's one of the strongest.
I woke up one morning and he was eating soba noodles in the kitchen, why and how is he in our dorm. Is he even a student here?!
Oh my god he's now fighting against Ace, I swear to god sport majors are so dramatic.
It was a tie. How am I supposed to feel about this.
They both are now emptying our fridge, someone please get them out.

Warning: The characters will mostly be ooc and for the most part will not have the same background as in the anime/manga. The reader’s age will be above consent; the exact number is up to you.
Disclaimer: These stories are based ‘loosely’ on the game Obey me shall we date. The major stuff will be the same, but here and there the story will be changed or embellished. It is just an AU and I do not own the game the characters, from both One Piece or Obey Me, nor do I own One Piece in general. It would be cool though…
Time is a Delicate Thing
Devildom!AU
(pt16/?)
Various Characters X Reader
When you first arrived to the past you stumbled out of Kid’s closet, quickly taking cover from the five demon brothers you’d seen in the room on your way down to the floor. They were talking about earlier this day when they decided to disappear into a fake game as a ploy to get you to have a one-on-one with Sabo.
It felt weird being back in time. Not in a physical sense, it was more mentally. Knowing that you weren’t in your original time, crouching down behind an unfinished project as you listen in on a conversation you would have never heard if it wasn’t for what happened later on this day.
You ducked around the room from one place to another as they moved, attempting to avoid detection. Eventually, though, the owner of the room did find you, releasing a loud and ‘you will totally not mention this again’ screech. “What are you doing here, Y/n? You’re supposed to be with Sabo right now!” Shocked by your sudden appearance, they wondered how they could have been so careless. Maybe you had seen one of them slip away? Ace, probably? He was the last one to disappear before you were left alone with Sabo.
You eagerly agreed with their theory, encouraging them to let you go through with their plan. “It’s the perfect opportunity to have a talk with Sabo.” You said, already rushing out of the room to go ‘find Sabo’.
Out in the hallway, you still couldn’t get away from the troublesome past. Two voices made their way down the hall. It was the past you and Sabo’s, both of you were discussing the brothers’ disappearances. Giving an exasperated sigh, you ran down the hall to get away from your past self and Sabo.
Your thoughts bounced around as you tried to think of a room you two didn’t go near earlier that day. Practically flying up the stairs to the third floor until you made an abrupt stop in front of a door you couldn’t quite remember ever seeing. With no time to think, you rushed into the room as your past self walked up the stairs.
On the other side of the unknown door, there was a room you seemed to recognize faintly. It was an inkling of a memory only, though. You hadn’t been in here before but there was a sense of familiarity wrapping itself around you making you feel at home.
A knock on the door startled you from your serened state. The person from the other end didn’t even give you the chance to collect yourself before barging in. “I knew I’d find you here.” It was Law who’d come in, looking relieved to find you. “Isn’t Zoro with you? He said he was coming over. Maybe he got lost along the way?” That was weird. If this was the past, then why would Zoro be outside the attic? A pit was growing in your stomach, something feels off about this time. It’s like it wasn’t you he was speaking to, but he seemed to notice you just fine. There was no mistake in what he said. You’ve met Zoro in this time, but it wasn’t your memory. It didn’t even feel like you were in your own body; just a disembodied being floating right above where you should have been standing.
Law declared he’d help you find Zoro and left the room, not sparing your stunned, immobile body a second glance.
You willed your out of body experience to end by moving your weighed down legs to take a step. It felt like trying to pull yourself out of quicksand. The seconds it took for you to reach the open door felt like hours, but alas you reached the entryway, quickly closing it behind you as you exited the out of body room and returned inside your own. You looked around the hall you stood in, cod sweat beading on your forehead. You had no other clues to find Zoro in this warped time; but if he was running loose around one of these memories the attic was the safest bet to the time you were trying to find.
An argument spilled down the staircase that leads to the attic, echoing in the vacant hall. Curiously, you eavesdropped into the argument, which sounded like Sabo and Zoro going back and forth about the former’s imprisonment. Zoro shouted at Sabo about how he'd changed. About how the old him would have never been as pathetic as to let someone control him like this.
Sabo paid him no mid, throwing a comment about how he’d changed too over his shoulder as he came down the stairs. You dashed towards the spandrel to hide from him, sneaking up the stairs after you thought it safe to come out.
Zoro called out from the room he was locked in, pleaded for sabo to reconsider what he was doing before falling silent. When you neared the door he was no longer right beside it, rather splayed out on the bed taking a nap. Was this a different time? The one you were looking for, you hoped.
You touched the bars that acted as a door, caging the room. The magic Sabo used on them wasn’t as strong as you remember, it just gave away with one small push...Was it you who opened the door when Zoro was released? That can’t be right, you only had five pacts. Had you missed the culprit you were looking for? Or was it really just a mistake Sabo had made?
You walked over to him, waking up a very confused Zoro. He asked how you got in here, but then he saw the opened door and stopped himself from further questioning you... He’s... free
HE’S FREE!
“You did it! You actually did it,” Zoro shot up from the bed, barreling to meet you by the door with a plastered smile, “I didn’t think a weak human could pull it off, but you actually...” He suspired, making a spall pin in excitement.
How ironic, to be saved by the one thing he wanted to destroy. “Sabo and Shanks could have never imagined THIS would happen. “I can now go and achieve what I set out to do, thank you for this.” Zoro opened his arms, a dark tint forming in his eyes. “Here, let me show you how grateful I am.” You backed away from him, not liking the way he was looking at you. It was maniacal, a stare full of hatred and elation.
“It’s rude to not accept someone’s gratitude, Y/n.” He spat his words out like venom. Horns sprouted from his head as a ruthless air came round him, just like his hands did around your neck. Your face was painted in terror as you clawed at his hands, only succeeding in making his grip tighten on you. Your head buzzed from the dual force of his hold and the smothering pressure from his emanating power.
“AhaHahAHa you should see your face right now! It’s so,” Zoro pulled you up to your tiptoes so you were leveled with him, “Pathetic.” Your neck strained as it tried to keep the weight of your body from snapping it in half. “Don’t blame me for tricking you, blame yourself for being so foolish.” Your hands went slack beside you. Your body didn’t have enough strength to keep resisting the cold, static-like feeling that was overtaking you, drowning out his voice. “But don’t worry, I won’t kill you. I want you to see the destruction of your world.” He squeezed your neck harder, eyes filled with glee that turned sour with his last words to you. “But if you get in my way, I’ll make sure to leave your body unrecognizable.” Zoro dropped you on the floor, not caring to stick back and see if he’d actually left you half-alive.
-
There it was again, the out of body feeling from before. Except this time you couldn’t see anything anywhere. You couldn’t even see yourself. You were just an out of body spirit that floated in complete nothingness. It would have been more comforting if where you were at had a discernible color; a pure black of death or a brilliant and blinding white of afterlife, but there was nothing. You couldn’t make out what it was supposed to be, it just WAS. It existed without existing. It was nothingness, but it enveloped you like it was everything. You couldn’t even say that it was blank or empty because the words entailed that there could be a something in this nothingness. You weren’t even here, yet your disembodied existence floated in and was what surrounded you. This place was a juxtaposition and a contradiction on its own.
Before you could give yourself a migraine by thinking about this, a voice called out to you. There was someone else here. But they weren’t here, there was no here. It was just the void, it was just you.
“Y/n,” the voice calls out again, “you have to wake up and help them, please.” You can’t even turn to try and look for the person; you already had an eagle’s eye view to the vastless nothing in all directions. “Who are you- where are we?”
“Don’t worry about that. Just know that my name is Kuina, and I’m worried about my brothers, especially Zoro.” The voice was familiar, but in a way that you would never be able to guess. “After my death, I remembered who I was. I forgot my way back to the Celestial Realm, but luckily I was able to stay with them.” Her voice grew quiet and melancholic, “watched over them… but now Zoro is being hot-headed again. Y/n,” she pleaded, “help them, please.”
You must have really had a streak of stupidity because you could just agree. There was something that drew you to her; made her feel like an old trusted friend. Even after what Zoro did to you, what he is going to do to Earth… You still agreed, for her. “...Okay... but first, why me?”
“That’s because you’re my-” she was getting cut off as you started to regain consciousness. “That’s why-” a sliver of color appeared and disappeared before you. “So please, if y-” Blurry light plagued your vision; finally cutting her off completely.
You laid on the floor, a headache threatening to make your head explode. Gathering yourself with a few deep breaths, you forced yourself to look for the danger that your body wanted to ignore.
You found it in the form of arguing. Walking closer, you saw a gory sight that you wished would have never been ingrained in your memories. Kid sat on the floor, a bloody mess in front of him and the others circling around him.
“Y/n, stay with me!” Kid shouted over the others, holding on to your cracked skull that threatened to spill your brain. The hit past you had taken was too hard, there was no way you could have survived that, yet a trembling hand slowly came up just to fall back down
Zoro laughed at the weak display, unaware that who he’d left battered and broken wasn’t the you he had talked to up in the attic. “Zoro, how could you do this?!” Luffy yelled at him with balled fists at his side, he didn’t know how to feel right now. Zoro was in the human realm and suddenly he’s just here and he’s hurt you.
The real you still stood atop the stairs, watching in on their woe. You should leave, you needed to. Benn said that you shouldn’t be seen, and yet that’s all you’ve done since you got here… But you couldn’t just leave them to suffer like this. Kid and Luffy were freaking out, Law and Sanji were screaming at everything they could, and Ace and Sabo looked like they were gonna explode!
You carefully went down the stairs so as to not startle them in their ongoing clamor. On the last step, you could finally get the full view of your beaten and bruised body. A milky white bone protruding from your arm, dripping with your blood. Your skull bashed in on one side with only Kid’s hand as a bandage to hold it in place. A leg bent in too many different angles for it to be normal. Labored and gurgled breathing wheezed out of your blood filled throat. The gory sight had you stunned in place.
The brothers’ loud gasps were what brought you back from your disassociated state. “Huh?! What’s going on?” Law looked at you flabbergasted, “how can this be?” Everyone was just as confused, giving their own variations of surprise.
“You were supposed to be dead!” Zoro lunged at you.
“No, wait! Kuina, she-”
“Don’t you dare say her name, human! You don’t have the right!” He shoved you down. “She-” you spluttered out blood, “ li-ived happily as a human!” You put your hands up, bracing for his next blow but it never came. “What.. what do you mean?”
You explained to them all that you had heard from the other Sabo. Kuina’s death, his pledge of loyalty, why he had to lock Zoro in the attic until things blew over. Your ‘’far fetched story only seemed more real when the past you disappeared in Kid’s arms.
“They uh… they can’t…Sabo?” They all looked at their big brother for guidance. It was like watching little kids look at their parent, hoping they’d provide clarity for their uncertainty. “... It’s true, what they said,” Sabo hesitantly confirmed, “How do you know that?”
“Kuina, she-”
“Don’t lie to me! There’s no way she could have,” His confusion was making his words bite, “Who are you really?”
“I can answer that.” You all turn to see Shanks entering the house with Benn in tow. “What they say isn’t a lie.” Shanks gestures at Benn, “I had his look into Y/n ancestry because something wasn’t adding up.”
“It appears that Y/n is a descendant of Kuina’s.”
That part did catch you off guard. Was that what she wanted to tell you when you asked why’d she picked you when you were passed out? A sharp pain made you grab at your head almost like Kid did with your dying body earlier. The throbbing increased until your eyes rolled back and you could see a vision. A time long passed, a memory that belonged to someone else. A promise etched itself into your brain. “No matter how far apart we may be, or how much time passes, even if you don’t remember who you are someday. I will never forget you. I hope you find happiness in your new life. I love you Kuina.” Aline of blood leaked out of your nose as you came back to your senses.
“Those words…. They were the last thing I told Kuina before she was taken away…. How do you know them?” Sabo was once again shocked into silence.
Shanks filled in the missing pieces. Kuina was an angel before being turned into a human, some of her powers must have stayed. A residue of them must have passed down from generation to generation until they got to you. With the limited power Kuina still had, she must have passed on some of her memories to you.
“... Kuina…” Sabo was taking in everything he’d heard. “Kuina...!” He rushed at you, enveloping you in a hug, the others soon doing the same.
Zoro stood back, not wanting to believe what he’d heard. It can’t be. It was too good to be true. He could believe that Kuina was reborn as a human but you, who so happens to be her descendant, manages to get chosen for the exchange program. It just….
“Kuina…” no matter how much he wanted to say it wasn’t true, deep down he wanted to believe too. That his sister lived as happily as they said she did. That she somehow managed to hold on until she made it back to them. “...Kuina” He lowered his heartbroken and guilt-ridden face. He didn’t want to look at you after what he’d done.
“Zoro, it’s okay,” you pulled yourself away from the embraces of the brothers. “It’s not. It’s my fault. If I hadn’t been so interested in humans, Kuina would have never-” a knot caught itself in the back of his throat.
“...Zoro… I didn’t know you felt that way…” Sabo neared him, “it wasn’t your fault. I wish I’d told you that sooner.” Those were the exact words Zoro needed to hear. After all these years, all the guilt that ate away at him.
He raised his head, finally ready to look you both in the eye, a tired smile spreading on his face. He feels a little bit lighter than he did before. “Thank you.”

Uff, these weeks I’ve been very busy with college, but now I could find time to draw a little. Here you can see the third part of my sketch collection for Necromancer Au.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
When Marco and Ace concluded the battle, the royal wizard was about to leave him in KO so he could take him to court to be judged. He broke the catalyst of Ace (the pearl of blood on his neck) and before he could finish the job, Sabo crossed in the road of his spell, stopping him. Marco could not believe that Sabo showed reasoning and free will. Using his magic, he glanced at his soul, and realized that it was different from what the necromancers known in history did. On the one hand, the sabo soul was tied directly to its body by a false chain made of magic. Normally necromancers tie the soul of the damned to an object or themselves to be able to give them orders and that they cannot act on their own. with that he confirmed that Ace has no power over the undead that accompanies him. that boy’s soul was too comfortable and free to be a slave. using necromancy is still a crime, but now he realizes that there is more there than just a dark wizard trying to create an army of the walking dead (as the report claimed). It is still a crime to be an unregistered wizard, a necromancer, and revive a deceased, but at least he deserves the opportunity to explain himself. For some reason, Marco doubts that that angry boy who seems about to cry is some kind of evil monster. Although Ace does not want to speak with him, Sabo invites him to his house (a hut in the forest) where they can speak more at ease. they end up telling him the most superficial part of the story (but true) about the death of sabo and Ace’s blood contract to keep him in the world of the living. he Spend a few more days, knowing and confirming the facts before making a decision. - You must enlist in the army of his majesty white beard, if you want to clear your name. Ace has no interest in joining anyone’s army and makes it very clear. but Marco is not giving options, he is giving an ultimatum. Ace cannot be left without supervision even if his intentions are not evil. He needs guidance and education, the curse that eats him for the improper use of his powers is the sign. Finally, he has to drag Ace.
-.-.-.-.-.-
Well, here I will give a little more explanations about the magic of Ace and Marco and the world of my AU in general.
the souls of people cannot be seen normally, they are in the body, fused with the flesh, so there is no way to distinguish more than the aura of people. The spirits are different. since sabo is dead, his soul left his body, but before he could go to the other side, Ace used his magic to create a chain with which to tie him to his mortal body. what resulted, he to revive as an undead. evil necromancers use their power to bind the soul of the deceased to an object or themselves, causing them to do nothing on their own, because there is a break in the flow of communication between soul and body. that would be a connection where the master gives the order, and the soul communicates this to the body. making the whole process very painful. Because being a magical user is very scarce, all countries keep records of their sorcerers and wizards and witches, etc. To avoid abuse of power with normal citizens, Ace is an unregistered sorcerer, and on the other making use of a taboo magic that most people fear. Black marks on the hands (and the curse on his legs) are consequences of using his magic improperly and without protecting his body.
They are on their way to meet the great White Beard, the strongest living sorcerer in the world.

the MAS Pirates of the Caribbean!AU I’m never gonna actually write
,,,with Nari’s encouragement, as always,,,
Ace is Elizabeth, Sabo is Will, Marco is Jack. Roughly.
Ace found Sabo post-capsizing, and there’s no pendant or anything, just the fact that he’s come off a pirate ship. Because of that Sabo’s a bit distrusted by the general populace, but Ace vows for his innocence time and time again and gets him the blacksmith job.
(Which is all sorts of awkward ‘cause Sabo kinda IS, in secret, an anti-monarchist. Akainu works for the monarchy, is a baddie. Garp is a lord/baron/whatever and Ace is his older charge.)
And then MARCO shows up. So he’s out and about trying to take down Blackbeard & recover the Moby. Marco... isn’t exactly human, but the details don’t matter. All we need to know is that the immortality curse went a little something like this: Marco’s been using his powers of immortality for Whitebeard and Whitebeard only, kind of as a rescued-selkie sort of situation where he’s giving his beloved dying father the chance to sort out the last moments of his life.
Because Whitebeard’s dying, he dismisses all his actual crew. Only Marco’s remained, which was when Blackbeard attacked. Teach wants immortality, a process that he believes is as simple as drinking Marco’s blood (aaaand here’s the whump).
ACTUALLY, Marco can’t share his immortality with more than one creature at a time, so when Blackbeard & all his crew drank the blood, they were all cursed with the “immortal but you won’t like it” aspect of the magic. Just before they drank it, Marco was forced to kill Whitebeard (he alone, through some ritualistic thing or another, can cancel the immortality) because he didn’t want Whitebeard suffering the curse he knew was coming.
As Blackbeard’s enjoying his immortality, they do the thing that happened to Bill Bootstrap Turner, to ensure Marco can’t come after them, but they knew where Marco was at all time, just in case they needed to fish him up for something.
But clearly, Marco escapes. He finds his way to the island where Ace & Sabo are at just ahead of Blackbeard, planning on taking his revenge there.
CUE PLOT
Marco saves Ace from drowning in the ocean, but is tossed in prison for it. The night Blackbeard’s crew attacks also happens to be the night Dragon’s revolution kicks off. It happens as a surprise, and Sabo’s trying to secure Ace first, leading Ace to find out Sabo’s been in the thick of inciting unrest all this time. He breaks off on his own, but then everything gets REAL messy when the immortal pirates attack.
Ace ends up fighting one of the pirates nearby Marco’s cell, and Marco did the blood magic thing that actually successfully kills the pirate. Ace is like “how did you do that??” Marco’s like “listen I’ll get rid of all of them if you let me out.” But then Ace is like “yeah I’ve had enough of trusting pirates.” He peaces out, fights Blackbeard on his own, tries to do the blood sigil (he doesnt know it has to be Marco’s blood). Blackbeard thinks Ace knows how to break the curse, and kidnaps Ace (the Nari Classic™)
Sabo and the Revolutionaries regroup. The monarchy is a bit in tatters, the people are upset, and Sabo had in mind that Ace would be a figurehead in restoring a more democratic order on the island. But Ace was kidnapped! Also he loves Ace, we know that. The RA sends him out to get Ace back, and so Sabo (having witnessed parts of the situation with the sigil perhaps) goes and gets Marco. They take to the high seas in pursuit of the Moby.
For Ace, it's about survival. He basically traded his life in exchange for the island, and he's really gotta sell this and keep Teach away. BUT THERE'S A SECRET SOMEWHERE IN THERE. They ask him for his name and he's like 'fuck my dad' and says Portgas D. Ace, and Teach is all like ::eyes:: 'Oh?? like the famous ocean witch (or something)?' and Ace is like '...yup, sure, mhm.'
(Tbh this is sequel content where Rouge is that ocean goddess person and the family reunion’s awkward)
so they fully believe Ace knows what he's talking about as Ace says they need to go back to the place where Teach & co got cursed in the first place (because it's very far, mostly).
THE COMPASS. It's Ace's, actually, the one he always has strapped to his wrist. It was his mother's, and because Rouge actually was a p badass witch-person the compass points to the thing the wearer wants most. It was meant to guide Ace. But Ace actually gave it to Sabo like, right before the whole mess with the revolution & the pirates. His intention was to make Sabo confront those damn feelings between them Sabo won't acknowledge. (But then Sabo lied to him and broke his heart.)
Marco & Sabo set sail. Sabo's like "hey i have this compass that points to Ace 'cause he's the one I want most" and Marco's like "well that's fucking convenient ain't it."
"So what, did you instigate this whole overthrow-the-monarchy effort just so you could get the guy yoi?"
Sabo nearly kills him for that. of course not. the revolution is about equality and freedom, and ace gets that more than anybody. they've talked and dreamt of change. He was actually getting around to telling Ace about the RA stuff, but shit blew up before he could.
"but you wouldn't understand."
Marco certainly understood. the whole reason he hung out with Whitebeard in the first place was because his own kind were obsessed and stingy with their immortality, walling themselves off. Marco just wanted to live and love freely. After Whitebeard though, he's gotten a bit wary of the whole feelings part of the equation.
Marco has all sorts of hangups about immortality because that’s just how he is. Basically, he really REALLY wants to just be mortal, to have uncomplicated loves, to not struggle under the burden of eternal life. He could only grant immortality to oNE partner, and he already curses his own immortality why would he wish it on anybody else.
Fun factoid alert, by giving his immortality to multiple people (unwillingly but still), Marco gets the punishment too. He can't eat or drink or fuck for pleasure. He's mostly fine with that, but when the ~attraction starts sparking between him and Sabo he's more motivated than ever to kill Teach.
So they get to the place where Teach stole the powers from Marco, and Ace is about to be busted. Luckily, Sabo and Marco also get there! Marco needs to prep (aka bleed himself??), so Sabo goes in on his own first. Cue that hilarious scene of Ace only getting vaguely cut and then Sabo spiriting him away into the shadows.
Ace isn't /really/ mad about the revolution thing, because ideologically he's fairly onboard. It's just the fact that Sabo's lied to him. But of course Sabo also ~followed that compass all the way to Ace so .,.. Ace is pretty damn happy, all things considered.
...And then they see that Marines/Royals were coming, having followed Marco and Sabo from a distance or something. They need to warn Marco and get them all out of there.
(Meanwhile Ace is like "you teamed up with the hot pirate????" and Sabo's like “you think he’s hot too??!??!!" and Ace is like “too?!!>@?”)
mARCO has set up a whole blood sigil situation that would kill every single immortal in its barriers, including himself (  : ) : ) : )  ). But the Marines started attacking and Sabo and Ace were suddenly there and Teach is also attacking so before Marco could set the whole thing off, Ace gets shot in the back by Akainu. Is dying.
Marco is like "mOTHErfucKER. Here's the chill and funny prince from the island that also kind of abandoned me to my fate in that jail cell. He's also the love of Sabo's life. Sabo whom I'm pretty attracted to. Like. What's an immortal supposed to do in this situation."
Of course he gives Ace some of his blood and Ace comes back to life. But now the big sigil can't be used and Ace is effectively bound to Marco/immortal forever (you can't get rid of the immortality without dying). It's awkward as fuck, but they all get shit done and kill Teach and escape from Akainu.
SO NOW here's the three of them. Sabo was a Revolutionary pursued by the Royal Marines. Ace has been labeled a dissenter to the throne as well 'cause he fought on the side of the pirates. He's also immortal. Marco's immortal too. Since there's just the two of them, they luckily don't suffer the can't eat-can't drink-can't fuck situation anymore, but it's all just sort of funny because Sabo and Ace clearly love each other and Marco feels like a third wheel but he's pretty bound to them at this point and it's not like he can just go away.
(They fall in love. There’s angst.)

What if: Marine!Luffy (technically)
I feel like a lot of people have touched on the AU if Luffy ever became a marine instead of a pirate, and I really like reading about them! I watched a video on YT that goes into it pretty in depth (check it out here), and I do agree that some of it is very plausable! But it takes away a lot of what I believe is integral to Luffy’s story (asides from the fact Luffy wants to be a pirate).
Honestly, this stemmed because I don't want Luffy to lose most of the integral part of his life-- which is meeting Shanks.
As stated in the video, it due to Shanks’ influence and Garp's absencenthat sets Luffy on the path to becoming a pirate, and I do see why Shanks has to be out of the picture for Luffy to even consider being a marine.
But what if Luffy raised to be a marine but still maintains his integrity that not everyone is bad just because of what they are? And thus we would still see OUR Luffy but Marine, which makes me happy :)
(Feel free to interact and share your thoughts too! I'm just trying to have fun fleshing my thoughts out. ‘tis long post)
Luffy doesn't grow up wanting to be a marine hero like Garp, bc I still maintain that he doesn't want to be a hero. He should still be a free spirit for the most part, but I think his main goal in this AU at first would be strong-- whether it's to be strong for the sake of being strong or to protect other people.
Or maybe he hears and listens to marine stories and learns how they travel through the Grand Line-- all romanticized, btw, but I do believe marines out there who do fight justice (not that Luffy is interested in that aspect at the age of 6) and go on "adventures" as they put it, making Luffy star eyed about the world. Regardless, he isn't off-put by the marine thing and that's the big point. Maybe if Garp hadn't just forced him to be a marine and instead instilled the aspect of adventure and camaraderie, Luffy wouldn't be so resistant.
When Luffy meets Shanks, I think most of the interaction remains, except Luffy's fascination is replaced with curiosity. Doesn't change much, but it does let Luffy still be as fearless as ever in the face of pirates and want to know more about Shanks. Maybe as a child he DID have the mindset that all pirates are bad, so he tries to fight them off much to Shanks' amusement and eventually realizes after interacting with them that not all pirates are bad after all.
"Take me to sea with you!"
"No way! You're too weak! Besides, aren't you afraid of sailing with a bunch of pirates?"
"Shanks is not a bad pirate!"
"So there are good and bad pirates now?"
"Yeah. Good pirates party all the time and have fun. Bad pirates do bad things," is what I'm sure Luffy at age 6 would think for the most part.
And they'd laugh and tease Luffy for being weak, Luffy would cut his eye to prove he's not, and at this point Shanks is more of a role model rather than a pirate role model: he shows what a man should do, how he should protect his friends, and when to stand up for yourself.
And in saving and sacrificing his arm for a Luffy who doesn't want to be a pirate but a marine, it solidifies the theme that it doesn't matter what you are, but who you are that counts.
And that teaching follows Luffy everywhere he goes for his entire journey.
As for the straw hat, I stubbornly refuse that Shanks does not give it Luffy. As we know, the hat plays in a much larger role than being the crown for the next king of pirates. It's evident in the large straw hat in Mariejoa and the significance the Gorosei puts on a symbol like that. Anyhow, I'm not going to go into that much but REGARDLESS, Shanks gives Luffy the straw hat and to return it to him once he becomes a great (read: powerful, impactful, influential) man.
I think a large bump in the road with this theory is that Luffy would have an insanely harder time in his childhood. As a big-mouthed child, he wouldn't shut up about being the next Marine Admiral (best position of power little does he know; Luffy just knows they tend to be the strongest Marines), and knowing Ace who would never EVER want to be a marine because of his influence with Sabo and his upbringing of bandits, this does not fly well. I could probably entertain that Ace could have been a marine because people hated his father so much, but I think his goal of being more than just his father's son really paves a path for him to be a pirate, regardless of other influences.
So if you think Ace hated Luffy before at this point in time, oh boy.
I mean, Luffy can't just DIE, so really the meeting between him, Ace, and Sabo go relatively the same except Ace and Sabo are much more suspicious of Luffy, which doesn’t really bode well for him. But I’m pretty sure, marine or not, even Ace and Sabo wouldn’t abandon Luffy if he refused to rat them out-- or they might even feel even more incensed that Luffy didn’t say anything because he wants to be a marine.
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
“If I said anything, you wouldn’t be my friend!”
“We’re going to be pirates; you’re going to be a marine-- we’re not even on the same side! We shouldn’t even be friends!”
“But why does that matter?”
And everything goes well, they become brothers, and Sabo “dies.”
And above all, I think this moment is a turning point in Luffy’s life (wow he’s having a lot of revelations as a ten-year-old; poor kid) because now he not only recognizes that not all pirates are bad but also know not all marines are good (because how could they be protecting someone who killed his brother?) and their system has a lot of fixing to do.
Ace has a lot of mixed feelings about this, because his baby brother may want to be a marine, but Sabo died from going against the government-- so what does this mean for their future? But in the end, Luffy is still Luffy, and Ace wouldn’t abandon his brother, especially not when after he announced he wasn’t going to die Luffy declares that he was going to be a Marine and destroy the system from within.
Not really sure how small Luffy would put that in words, but the feeling is already there, and that sets his beginning, seven years later.
Some Straw Hats are not going to be with Luffy, and it’s unfortunate but a must. Some will, like Zoro, who Luffy saves at Shell Town-- and honestly, it might just be easier for him to find Mihawk if he’s part of the Marines-- and Nami, whose mother was a marine and the Arlong Pirates never gave her any reason to like pirates anyhow. There is some sticky business considering Nami’s earned treasure was stolen by the marines, but I’m very sure meeting Luffy would definitely convince her that there are good marines out there.
Many of the Straw Hats would have never been pirates if not for Luffy, asides from Usopp and Brook, who were or had aspirations to be a pirate before. As such, Usopp’s village would be saved by Luffy, but he wouldn’t go be a marine because he’s always wanted to be like his father. Brook would probably go back to Laboon after getting back his shadow on Thriller Bark and Luffy wouldn’t have a musician and the One Piece Universe Beyonce would never be born :(
Tbh, there’s a high chance Chopper wouldn’t join either, considering his father-figure waved a pirate flag, but I wouldn’t put it past Luffy to defend that flag anyways because of its significance to Chopper and the bravery that Dr. Hiruluk conveyed through it. But for the sake of this indulgent AU, lets say he does. :))
Robin though... uhhh being a wanted women makes it pretty difficult for her to join Luffy and considering Enies Lobby and the whole Buster Call deal... probably not. I can see her joining the Revolutionary Army pretty early on as a result though, but Luffy’s choice to save her life would not have changed nor would his impact on her change as well. You know, low key, I kinda want her to hide out on Luffy’s ship for a while and his crew being all “wtf captain, she’s a danger to society; isn’t she a bad person?” and Luffy just shrugs and laughs and tells them it’s okay (his original Straw Hat crew that stuck with him as a marine just smh but they know him too well to think he wouldn’t save Robin otherwise) and to have them decide if she’s a bad person or not themselves.
And EVENTUALLY Robin will be recruited into the Revolutionary Army, maybe in like a intense, “You have to go Robin, because even I can’t save you if you stay” sorta deal. (This could also be a chance for Luffy to meet Sabo, but that’s like a whole ‘nother can of worms.)
So Enies Lobby doesn’t happen. Franky doesn’t join either :/ And I don’t see Jimbei becoming a pirate after all the shit that’s happened to him and his bros, and honestly I just ever see him as being a marine, no matter how much he admires Luffy. Maybe they’d be buddies when he’s a Warlord though :))
So Alabasta-- Vivi gets to save her country with actual marine support aka Luffy. He works together with Smoker (heehee!) and Tashigi (god I would die for the interactions between her and Marine!Zoro) and kicks Crocodile’s butt regardless of his title as Warlord. Luffy calls it as he sees it, and violent dictatorship and mistreatment of his friends is a BIG no-no, maybe especially as marine who upholds goodness.
He gets promoted and gets the credit he deserves, though he’s too busy chomping down on food to even notice.
Vivi stays with her people, and they leave.
Meeting Ace during the Alabasta arc would have taken a little more secrecy-- or maybe Ace goes undercover for a brief period of time like Oda drew him a while back; wouldn’t put it past him to meet his little brother while he chases after Blackbeard.
Oh wait, would Sky Island even happen??? Honestly, who knows, but if he fights Bellamy, it would just ruin his redemption arc during Dressrosa bc wouldn’t Luffy just capture him?? or maybe he just punches him and that’s punishment enough who knows I didn’t think about this part in particular
BUT MARINEFORD. oh marineford
You see, I think as a marine, Luffy is completely different from Garp from the fact that he would NEVER put his job over his family. Luffy has already had one brother die, and he isn’t going to let another die if he can help it.
So what does that leave us? Maybe a prison break? Maybe going behind the scenes (as per Nami’s suggestion and implementation bc Luffy can’t be subtle for shit) to rig the execution and fuck up the cannons.
But the real mega problem here, is if Ace dies, I don’t know if Luffy can be a marine anymore, and that’s a big problem. Or maybe in having his brother die in his arms, despite trying to help him escape, will incite him to challenge the system and destroy corruption once and for all. (Demotion be damned.) But when Sabo finds out Luffy let Ace die in front of him, I think the connotations would change with their reunion since Luffy is a marine and thus still, regardless of who Luffy is, “on the other team.”
In fact, the existence of the Marineford Arc makes it extremely difficult for Luffy to continue being a marine, so honestly, at this point, even though it goes against the entire Marine!Luffy AU, I think Luffy could just go rogue, like he was always meant to be in the original One Piece timeline. So maybe it’s a full-circle to Luffy being what he was meant to. Who knowssss but that’s all I’ve got.
Let me know what you think!! If you read this far haha I’m always down to talk about Luffy bc I love him sm.

Promises
20 Years at Sea Day 12: Promises
I could have kept going with this one, but I think I want to sleep at some piont tonight so I’ll leave it here. I think it’s already the longest of these from me yet.
Luffy had made many promises in his life.
He had promised to grow strong and form a crew stronger than even Shanks’. He had promised to become Pirate King and take care of Shanks’ hat and give it back when he was done.
He had promised that he would love and be the best little brother he could for his big brothers. He had promised also that Sabo would never be forgotten.
He had promised each of his crew that they were his, his friends. He had promised to that he would take care of their dreams and help each one of them reach them. He had promised not to get between Zoro and his goal to be to Greatest Swordsman. He had promised to protect Nami’s smile. He had promised to protect them and to come after them if they left without wanting to. He had promised to come back to them when they had separated, that they would journey on together again (he just knew that they all needed a little more time before that could happen).
He had promised that he would save Ace, but he hadn’t been able to.
(Ace had made a promise too. Had promised Luffy he would not die.
But he had also made a promise that predated that one, to a brother he thought forever lost. That he would protect their baby brother and that was the one he needed to keep the most. Because what would his life mean if he didn’t keep it.)
***
Zoro didn’t make promises lightly and he always kept them when he did. Though occasionally along the way the meanings behind them changed slightly and his personal code changed the outcomes.
He had promised that he would become the World’s Greatest Swordsman, that he and Kuina would battle for the title. Now he would still be the Greatest but instead of battling his rival, he would carry her spirit and blade into his challenge for the title. He would make his name reach the heavens to ensure she knew that their dream was accomplished.
He had promised to join Luffy’s crew, but he had also promised that should the rubberman get between his and his dream, he’ll kill him. He would be a pirate but on his own terms. (And now his dream was so entangled with his Captain’s it would be impossible for him to do so.)
He had promised his Captain (his King, for all that no-one had yet realised that was what he was yet) that he would never lose. He had not broken that promise, for all the Curly-brow had once brought it up, because he two of them knew it only applied to swordsmen/women, so the devil fruit morons that had knocked him down didn’t count, not that they had kept him down long. (The taining with Mihawk didn’t either; spars, not battle.)
The swordsman had also promised his crew that he would protect them as best he could. But that he would also push them to grow stronger for themselves and the crew as a whole. He and the other frontline fighters had their own battles to fight, and they each had their own potential that would be stifled if he continued to stand between them and what came at them.
He had promised that even though they were an unusual crew, with unusual dynamics, in some things their Captain needed to be respected. As painful as a decision may be to the crew, if it came down to it and Luffy made a decision, it was to be understood and followed. New crewmates could be tested to ensure they met the standards of the crew, loyalty wise, but somethings concerning safety of the crew could not be laughed off and ignored.
Zoro had promised that he would return to the crew, stronger and more prepared for the new calibre of enemies they would fight in the New World. Ready to sail on, journeying together. Whole again to show them all who the King truly was.
(Kuina had made promises to him as well. That she would join him on the journey to the top of the world of swordsman/womanship. That she would prove that women could have incredible sword craft, and hold their own in the world. Then she had died and left him only able to help with one part of her dream.
Zoro had to wait for the Copycat Marine to grow and prove herself to prove to the world the other part. Because as much as it annoyed him to admit it, she did have the skill if she stopped worrying so much about his reaction to her, and how the world currently saw her and actually reach for the top.)
***
Nami had made and broken a lot of promises in her life. She had been a thief and all but alone in enemy territory for years after all. But she had attempted to
She had promised that she would make the money to buy her town back from the monsters that had taken her mother from her. She had almost done so too, before the bastard pulled his little stunt.
She had promised a lot of things to her victims when she was stealing to make up the ransom. Very rarely had she ever come through on them though, they hadn’t been of any consequence to her except to keep in mind in case she came across them again.
She had promised to navigate the Straw-Hat ship through any seas they ever decided to cross. This she kept in the most surprising of ways, up mountains, up a vertical current, on cloud-seas, through random storms and sunny days that suddenly changed weather every two seconds. But she had kept it (and she will continue to do so for as long as she is able).
She had promised to chart a map of the world. A dream she had once given up hope for, but she had sworn it again in the fall of her nightmare and again at the end of the East. It will take time, but with the help of her crew she’ll get there.
She had promised that she would re-join the crew, separated as it was at the time. Follow he Captain’s order and learn all she could where she was in the time he had given them and then join them all back at Shabody to travel under the sea.
(Arlong had promised that he would set her and her village free as soon as she came up with the money to pay for it. The bastard had gone back on his promise, even as he wheedled his way around it when she accused him of it.
But it hadn’t mattered, because Luffy had already made a promise she hadn’t realised at the time. He had promised that he was her friend, had promised his and the crew’s strength to help her and he didn’t back out on his promises unless he was forced to.)

Stability - 2
Fanfiction: Stability Story Summary: It wasn’t because he was self-conscious or ashamed. No, it was because he was afraid. His greatest fear was being alone after all. Characters: Luffy, Zoro, Chopper, Nami, Ace, Sabo, Law Pairing: Eventual LawLu Rating: T Warnings: Swearing, AU/UA, canon-typical violence, angst A/N: Here’s part 2. When I’m coherent I’ll work on part 3
.xxx. = Time/scene skip
.+++. = PoV change
Read on Ao3
Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3
“These are for you Luffy.”
Vivi was smiling at him, her outstretched arms holding a few wrapped items.
Luffy blinked, tilting his head. “For me?”
That smile widened and Nami came up behind Vivi as well. She had that somewhat scary smile on her face – that one that knew everything. But, in this case it wasn’t that scary. They both nodded.
So he didn’t wait any longer, taking the gifts and tore off the wrapping. Clothes. They were clothes of some sort – like sleeveless shirts but… short.
Nami came up to him, placing a hand on his shoulder. “You can use these instead of the bandages. We asked Chopper, and he said they’re fine and to use them like you use your bandages.” She was smiling at him. “So don’t wear them all the time. And you can put them on yourself, instead of coming to one of us to do it.”
And Luffy just stared at the gift.
Vivi was still smiling down at him. “And if you break all of them, just send me a message, as I know you fight all the time.” She said with a soft laugh. “I can always get you some more somehow.”
“Thank you!” He laughed, feeling tears in his eyes and wrapped the two of them in his arms.
.+++.
They always ensured to just let each of their new crew members know eventually about everything. Mostly it was because they kept getting into more and more dangerous situations, and they couldn’t afford to risk a shocking discovery in the middle of a battle. Of course, everybody took it with ease. Nobody had a problem with it.
The general populace never knew. There were a select few people that knew, such as those who knew Luffy before he set out to become a pirate (Ace, the Redhair Pirates, Luffy’s hometown), and then there was the doctor from Nami’s hometown. Vivi and Carue knew as well, being there when Luffy had admitted it to the crew. (Not to mention Vivi was unofficially a Strawhat, even if she couldn’t be with them.) Bon Kurei, too, knew. But mostly that was because of his devil fruit, and he made no comments or judgements on Luffy either. Nor, did it seem, did he reveal Luffy’s secret, even when they were enemies or captured by the Marines.
And, in Water 7, they found out that Luffy’s grandfather also knew. And supportive to boot. Just not in the case of his piracy.
If they found anybody who had been opposed to their captain – well, the Strawhats would ensure that they paid.
.+++.
He woke up, finding himself surrounded by women. He could hear them mumbling things, but he didn’t quite understand it. His head hurt…
…Where was he?
“…doing here?”
“…mushrooms.”
“…she doing alright?”
“Oh, she’s waking up.”
Luffy sat himself up. What had happened? …Wait a minute
He was naked!
“Where are my clothes!”
He quickly brought up his knees to cover himself. Shit. Shit. Shit. A bunch of strangers just…
(He could hear them, all talking about him. No. Not him. Her. they said. She they whispered. That girl.)
“Shut up! Shut up!” He demanded, covering his ears.
Finally, somebody brought him a blanket and covered him up. He was trembling, and all he could hear was those words. Those words that described somebody that he wasn’t.
“G-Give me my shirts back. Please.”
“What’s wrong, young one?”
Luffy looked up at the only one that hadn’t referred to him incorrectly. Her voice was thick with an accent, and she made some sounds that resembled a cat.
“Give me my shirts back!” He demanded. And his pants too. But his shirts first.
The old woman gestured with her staff and a single shirt was brought over. It wasn’t the outer layer, but the inner one. Well, that one was the most important one at least.
“Your other one was destroyed and in tatters.”
Luffy quickly snatched it before putting it on, letting the blanket cover his lower half.
(There. That was better. Much better.)
“You seem calmer now.” The old woman noted.
Yes, yes of course he was. His top was dealt with. Not to mention these women around him had stopped their chatter and whisperings. And so he nodded.
“Hmm….” And then the old woman leaned in, closely looking at his face. Her head tilted, hand going up to her chin. “So, tell me what brought you here.” There was a pause and she continued to look at him. “Girl.”
Luffy flinched and narrowed his eyes. “I’m not a girl!”
(All the women around him were talking again. Saying stuff like how and why and what and just asking questions all to themselves.)
The old woman held her hand up, clearing her throat.
“Boy, then, is it?”
(There were gasps all around, but a stern gaze from the old lady stopped them from talking even more.)
“That’s right! I’m Monkey D. Luffy, the man who will become the Pirate King!”
And after that, all of the women in the room just… jumped him.
.xxx.
The next thing he knew, he was in a prison cell, a blanket still covering his lower half – but, hey, at least they kept his undershirt on.
His head was starting to hurt less. And he was starting to remember now.
Kuma. His nakama…
He wrapped the blanket around his waist awkwardly and walked up to the bars.
The women were outside of the cell, staring at him.
His clothes were mostly missing. Apparently his shirt was ripped. But what about his pants? And Rayleigh’s vivre card! And his hat! And Ace’s vivre card!
“Where’s my hat?”
When Luffy looked through the crowd of women, he found one that was wearing it. “Ah! There it is! Give it back!” The bars were going both ways, but he could still stick his hand through it. With a grin, he stretched out his arm, snatching his hat back. Ah, yes. Much better. Undershirt, check. Hat, check. Some more clothes would be nice too…
(This time these women were whispering better things about him. Him. His. That boy.)
Yes, this was much better.
“Oi, do you know where my pants are?”
They said his shirt was tattered, right?
“Ah, your pants were ruined too. Here, we made you new ones.”
(Okay, scratch that, this wasn’t better at all.)
Frills. Flowers. Girly things.
“I’m a guy, dammit!”
And, just like that, the women became aggressive again.
“As I thought. Typical.”
That woman looked like a guard.
“We save your life, and you show no gratitude?”
Wait – wait… “You saved my life?”
But they didn’t want to listen. Even though he apologised.
“Men are forbidden from stepping foot on this island.”
…An island forbidden to men? What kind of place was this?
“Elder Nyon says that, even though your body is that of a woman, your spirit is that of a man. And that makes you a man. And, by being a man and setting foot on this island is a crime.”
He tried to apologise some more. Tried to insist that he didn’t mean to be here. That Kuma had sent him flying here. He didn’t know.
But they just held their arrows at him, not giving in.
“Just let me go! I made a promise to my nakama!”
Damn it all. Looks like he just had to run.
.xxx.
Impel Down had been chaos.
But now they were on their way to Marineford, on their way to the war.
Luffy was disheartened to learn that Bon had stayed behind to get them free, but he understood it. It wasn’t fair though.
But the thought of Ace kept him going. He needed to save Ace.
(He remembered, too, something that Bon had said to him: Iva. The miracle worker. “Hey! Maybe she can help you out Mugi!”)
Luffy placed his hand on his chest. His undershirt had melted away from Magellan’s poison. The only thing keeping it in place was bandages…
He glanced back to Iva, and he remembered when Iva had…
"Iva?"
"Yes Mugiwara-boy?"
"Do you think you can fix me? I wanna be myself, and Bon told me that you could help me with that.” Luffy looked over to the sea and hugged himself. He remembered his friends and their smiling faces. Vivi’s laughter and her present. How many did he have left on the Sunny?
“Bon-boy did mention someving like vat.” Iva had nodded thoughtfully.
Luffy blinked. “What do you mean?” Bon had…?
“He said to make sure vour upper body was covered and vrapped. Tightly. Combined with the fact vat vour clothes had all been burned away, and how he referred to you, it vasn’t too hard to figure it out Mugiwara-boy.” Iva flashed a smile at him. “Very vell, it may be uncomfortable given your circumstances but Vi’m certain you are more than villing. Hormone Injection!”
The stab in his side was a pain he had been becoming familiar to, unfortunately. There was more pain. Here and there. As his body changed. It wasn’t just pain either but… strange sensations as well. Shrinking and growing. “A-Ahh! Weird. I feel…”
His voice was changing, getting deeper… coarser.
His face felt funny. As did his neck. No. Everything felt funny. A weight was lifted from his chest, but something else happened lower.
“I-I…” He was dizzy after all of it. His voice – it was similar but different. It wasn’t quite that of a stranger, but he wasn’t used to it.
“M-My voice.”
He lifted his hands up to this throat – feeling a pronounced bump there. He felt his face – wider, it wasn’t like before. And then his chest.
“Gone! They’re gone!” The weight that was lifted from there wasn’t just literal either. No, it was symbolic too. A weight that no longer held him back or pushed him down. Gone! They were gone!
He laughed, wrapping his arms around himself.
(He could hear Iva laughing softly in the background.)
And then he pulled open his pants to look down.
“Shishsihi!” He laughed.
Complete. Whole.
This was who he was.
“Thank you Iva!” He said, and just jumped onto the Queen, wrapping his arms around them.
.+++.
“Luffy!”
Why? Why was that bastard here?! Such a reckless idiot! “Don’t come here! This is my mistake! Don’t go butting into my business!”
That damn fool! Why couldn’t he have minded his own business?
“I don’t give a damn about any of that! You’re my brother!”
…There just was something about Luffy’s voice right now. It was different. Maybe it was just the war. Maybe it was just the fact that it was Luffy’s voice that was the only one he could truly hear right now. That it was his voice that stood out in all of this chaos…
Whatever it was though, it sounded different.
(He could still hear other voices and understand their words however. But it was like a muffled buzz. Confusion. Astonishment. What? Ace’s brother? No way? Roger had another son?)
And now it was Sengoku’s voice that boomed out for all to hear. “Don’t be fooled! These two are foster siblings! Luffy’s father is not Roger, but Dragon the Revolutionary! Both of these siblings carry cursed blood in their veins! Don’t let this rookie take control of the war!”
Well, at the very least Sengoku wasn’t that heartless to reveal Luffy’s biology to the world…
(If he had, everything be damned, Ace would have tried attacking the bastard.)
“You idiot!” Ace screamed out to Luffy. Damn it all. If Luffy hadn’t….
“Ace! Stay there! I’m coming!”
And came he did.
.xxx.
“Hey, hey, that’s my little brother you are attacking there.”
After the two of them dealt with the swarm that came at them, Luffy had just… pounced at him, wrapping his arms around him tightly.
“Ace!”
…Wait a minute… Something was missing! And Ace pulled Luffy away and took a long, good look at him. No way! No way!!
“Luffy!” He was beaming down at his little brother. “You’re—”
“I know, right?” And Luffy was grinning up at him with sparkling eyes. “Iva fixed me up! I even have–”
“Luffy! Watch out!” Ace grabbed the arm that tried to slice his brother in two before blasting the offender away. “Let’s get out of here. Tell me all about it later.”
And Luffy continued to grin up at him before nodding and laughing.
To think, Luffy finally was in the right body…
God… he was so happy right now…
.xxx.
…Where was he?
(Explosions. Screams. Agony. Loss. Pain! Oh God! The pain!)
There was frantic beeping. People yelling. Hands on his shoulders.
“Calm down. Calm down. It’s alright. You’re alright…”
The beeping was settling down now. And his head… it was foggy... It wasn’t enough for him to lose consciousness yet.
“Wh-Where am I?” He croaked out. (Why was his throat so dry?)
“I’m Trafalgar law. A surgeon. You sustained major injuries, but I was able to resuscitate you. You’re currently on my ship…”
That voice drifted off and he couldn’t decipher the words anymore. Injuries? Was that why he remembered those sounds? Memories began to flood in now.
(”Leave! Get away from here my children!”)
(”Ace!”)
(”Die!”)
Ah… shit…
Luffy… Luffy… Luffy was…. (For some reason he couldn’t even muster the energy to panic about his brother.) “Luffy…” Even his voice was weak. Tired. Exhausted. “Luffy… where’s Luffy?” The world was spinning. He could barely think… “…And the Old Man? Where is he…?”
Those hands were on his shoulders again.
“Mugiwara-ya is recovering in the next room.” The same voice spoke calmly to him.
Oh, Luffy was safe. Ace felt his lips curling into a smile as relief flooded over him. Good… Good….
.+++.
Law sighed as he sat at his desk. Dealing with these two brothers was exhausting. He needed to keep both of them heavily sedated, and they were each concerned about the other’s wellbeing.
Luffy had been the first to recover, and he would constantly look into the window to Ace’s room. And, since Ace would regain consciousness from time to time, Law had to keep the man under constant sedation. Well, at least until Law was certain that sudden movements wouldn’t tear or rupture anything.
Thankfully he didn’t have to really worry about that with Luffy. Sure, he had to tell the idiot to not overexert himself, but moving around was fine.
(Although there was that time when Luffy had finally begun to move around on his own that made him question himself. Did he mess up on the dosage he had last given Luffy? Certainly, it was plausible considering how tired he was and that he was treating multiple patients. For one of the first things out of Luffy’s mouth – aside from inquiring about Ace’s condition – was: how do I pee? And, as Law thought about it more, it only made him believe more and more that he had probably accidentally given Luffy Ace’s dosage of sedative and painkillers. Which produced a rather unfortunate scenario for him, as his crew had left to check up on Ace and he was the only one there to answer Luffy’s awkward question. So, woe he went, since his obviously high patient was rather insistent on lacking the knowledge of just how to empty his bladder.)
Eventually, Ace had become fit enough for Law to take him off of the sedatives.
When he had come to, it was apparent that Ace remembered the few moments that he had been conscious and when Law had to calm the man down until the sedatives kicked in.
Tears were flowing down his cheeks.
“The Old Man… he’s dead, isn’t he?”
Law could only nod solemnly.
Thankfully, it was Luffy who came in to support his brother, so Law didn’t have to attempt to do anything else.
.+++.
“Luffy – you’re… you’re…”
Luffy was beaming at Nami who was staring at him, her eyes wide in awe.
“I know right!”
Nami hugged him. And Usopp, and Brook, and Franky… Robin used giant arms while Chopped was hugging Luffy’s head. In fact, the only two had hadn’t joined in on the massive groups hug was Zoro and Sanji. But, when Nami spared a glance behind her as they began to walk, she could see the two men placing their elbows on Luffy’s shoulders, smiles on all three faces.
It made her smile as well.

Homesick
Also on AO3  Buy me a Coffee
Ace has been homesick for as long as he can remember.
It's a terrible feeling, being homesick, if you don't know where home is and only know where it is not. It's not here; not in the woods in a house with too many people and a blanket on the floor for a bed. It isn't in the scrap heap, nor is it in the city where people talk about how the king of the pirates got what he deserved. It is not, despite what Grandpa tries to tell him, in a navy barrack somewhere, surrounded by people who would execute him if they could read his blood like a book and see his family tree printed in it.
He begins to think he was born to be homesick; that it is a part of him as much as his blood and his freckles and his anger.
He doesn't know what he's angry at, but at least he always finds plenty of things to hit in response.
He’s usually angry at Grandpa, hates him sometimes, most times, and he wonders if he's capable of love, wonders if Roger was, if Roger’s blood hollowed out his heart before it had its first chance to beat.
He learns he can love when Sabo is gone, when he sees Luffy crying and he clenches his fists, thinking he will kill anything that dares to touch him, that threatens to take the one brother that remains. It's a terrible way to learn that he is capable of this feeling. Leave it to him to learn about the world’s favorite feeling by attaching barbs to it and letting it rip through his chest.
He doesn't love anyone else, he doesn’t think. There is some affection for Dadan, he will admit, privately, and there is a complicated tangle somewhere in his chest for Grandpa, but they are not Sabo and they are not Luffy and if it is love it isn’t the same sort.
He likes Makino. He doesn’t love her, but he likes her, and it’s simple, at least. He likes that she brings him presents and remembers his birthday when even Grandpa forgets sometimes, or else remembers but doesn't come.
A poisonous part of him - most of him is poison - wonders if she would still come if Luffy wasn't there. He will never find out and he will always wonder and he will never want to know.
He doesn't resent Luffy for it though. Luffy, somehow, has hollowed out a sanctuary in the poison and is never touched by the worst of it. The edges brush against him sometimes, but he never seems to notice. Ace is grateful for that. He can't poison Luffy the way he has everything else. He won’t allow himself to.
So he doesn't resent Luffy for the way everyone loves him and is dragged to him as though he’s a magnet, as though he is the center of the world’s gravity. It is not Luffy’s fault, and Ace can't think of anyone who deserves it more, and when he sets off in his little ship to become a pirate he thinks of that and knows that Luffy, when he leaves home in three years, will find a crew to look after him, because Luffy is so hard not to love. It makes it easier to leave, to not worry. He feels bad, debates about it a little, but as much as he loves Luffy, that homesickness is still tugging in his chest and he has to find a way to make it stop before it kills him.
He sets off onto the sea, still unbearably homesick day after day and he doesn't know where he's going, so he sets his sights on Raftel and a crown because sibling rivalry and everyone needs a goal anyway. Then, at least, everyone who hates him will have a reason to.
If Roger was alive, he wonders, would he have loved him? Or would Ace be a disappointment to him too?
You don't take after old Roger much.
It is not a compliment or an insult. Just a statement of fact. Garp always did use to say he took more after his mother, though Ace is pretty sure he just meant his looks. He thinks Pops might mean more. Look on your face when you came in here, I thought you had something important to say. No one had ever simply not cared. Sabo had stopped caring. Luffy has clamped down on his hero worship, and if he still cared he had stopped showing it to Ace.
But they had cared once. Everyone cared, at least for a minute.
Not Pops. And something unwinds from around Ace’s chest, lifts itself off his shoulders, and he can pull more air into his lungs than he ever could before. He hadn’t known breathing could be this easy. The Spade pirates notice the difference. Most of the crew does. Most attribute it to being a commander, say that leadership suits him. The other commanders look at him knowingly and Ace wonders what parts of their pasts Pops forgave and forgot.
He doesn't ask. Their pasts, their blood, it all matters so little out here. They don’t ask either, and it doesn’t feel like they’re hiding secrets from each other; it’s like not asking why the sky is blue or why the ocean is wet. The answers don’t matter, so neither do the questions.
Ace never knew he could love this many people this much. It doesn’t feel like he should be able to keep this much in his chest, and it somehow weighs a thousand pounds and nothing at all at the same time.
Then Thatch is dead in a pool of his own blood and everyone tells him to calm down and he doesn't understand because how could he be calm, how could they be calm? Teach has killed Thatch, has knocked out one of the walls of their home, and maybe Ace can't make him rebuild it, but he can make him pay. His grandfather is a marine. He taught Ace that people have to pay for their crimes. Their definitions of crime are different, they disagree on what sorts of punishments to dole out, but they see eye to eye on the necessity.
And so now Ace is here, at the end, and he is pulling air into his lungs and pushing blood back out, and he is in Luffy’s arms as though he is the big brother.
Its wrong. Luffy is the youngest, should have stayed that way, it's Ace’s job - and his alone - to be the oldest. He promised that, to the ghost of a boy who was shot down while fleeing for freedom.
He's breaking two promises for the price of one. He wonders if Sabo is watching, if he's angry, if he thinks it would have been better for Ace to die and him to live, because he wouldn't have failed Luffy like this.
He wonders if his mother can see him, if she thinks it was worth it to die or if she wishes she had given him to the marines.
He thinks of the children who died while they hunted for him, and wonders if enough of their spirits linger to curse him for living while their potential was snuffed out.
And now he's dying here, in the middle of a sea of corpses that died either to save him or to kill him.
Maybe it's for the best. He doesn't know if he could ever give another order while knowing their captain, their father, died to rescue him. He doesn't know if he could ever sleep again without seeing Oars Jr. collapse, without hearing his comrades scream because dying hurts, he knows that now, he knows what they felt as they fell.
What Sabo felt as he went to the water, all those years ago.
He had wanted to go home, but without Pops, without so many crewmates, with all that guilt, he doesn’t know if it would still have been home, and he thinks the only thing that might be worse than not having a home at all would be to walk into his home and find it had stopped welcoming him.
He would not have forgiven himself, so maybe it's better to die, though he hates himself for thinking it while Luffy begs him to live, begs for a doctor, reminds Ace that he promised.
He shouldn't have promised. What, had he thought himself immortal, capable of declining when Death came to call?
The answer, he knows, is yes. He had been strong, stronger than anything the forest could throw at him, stronger than the pirates in the bay or the criminals in the garbage or the nobles in the town. He had defeated everything he met, again and again, only losing to Sabo, and then only sometimes.
He had thought himself invincible. Luffy had believed it. Ace had allowed him to believe it.
And now he is dying and Luffy is learning Ace isn’t invincible, nothing is, and he is going to be alone, alone, being lonely is more painful than being hurt, and where is Luffy’s crew, why aren’t they with him, how could they have left their captain at a time like this, when he was going to need them more than he ever had before, more than he’s ever needed anyone.
He hopes they’re just waiting somewhere. He hopes Luffy has not lost them, not as he is about to lose his brother too.
He’s leaving Luffy alone. He doesn’t want to, but the only way around it is if he learns how to breathe blood in place of oxygen.
He can hear Vista and Marco shouting somewhere. He thinks he heard Pops roar, but maybe it was an echo, a memory. Everything is blurry and far away, like a fever dream, except for Luffy, who is warm underneath him and Ace can tell he’s bleeding all across Luffy’s clothes.
Luffy’s wearing yellow. He used to wear yellow a lot, but he favors red these days. It’s a shame he’s switched back, Ace thinks distantly. The red wouldn’t show the blood so much.
He wants to tell Luffy it’s not so bad as he thinks. Wants to tell him about how much pain he’s been in his entire life, and how Luffy and Sabo and the Whitebeard pirates took it away, but words don’t cover it, don’t explain it, and he can’t reach into Luffy’s chest and make him feel it, make him feel the way it had seeped into Ace’s bones and made them heavy, made them ache until he wanted to break them to make it stop.
There are not enough words in the world to explain that. He settles for thank you, hoping Luffy will understand, knowing he won’t. Ace doesn’t understand, he just knows that it’s true, knows that it’s right.
As long as Luffy doesn’t think he’s lying. That’s the important thing. Luffy will find a way to forgive himself, to recover from this - he bounces back, he always bounces back - as long as he doesn’t think Ace’s last words are a lie.
Thank you. Thank you for loving me, for keeping me alive because I didn’t know how to do it for myself. Tell my friends, the other part of my family, thank you for the home. Thank you for giving me a place where I could breathe, could sleep, could think about something other than the question of if I deserved to do either of those things.
That was what home was, the one he had spent nearly two decades searching for, and it’s terrible that he can’t keep it, but he had found it, and that would have to be enough. Home was Pops, was Marco, was Vista, Jozu, Izo, the Moby Dick, the Jolly Roger flag that snapped in the wind above their heads.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
A long time ago, a lifetime ago, when he was a child, not yet angry and bitter, all sharp edges and teeth, he had asked someone in Goa kingdom where people went when they died. She had said Heaven, and then he had asked her what Heaven was.
Home, she had said. It’s going home and staying there, forever and ever and ever.
So at least he knows where he’s going this time.

Our Loving Angel (ch.7)
Fanfiction | AO3 Age jumping now~!
“You take that back right now, fucker!” Ace growls as he stands in front of an upper classmen, teeth clenching tight as he glares in threat.
They were both fifteen now, being freshmen in the spring time and the year almost over coming up in May. Sabo had a hard time once they got to the high school as teenagers were brutal with gossip and he had scarring so bluntly obvious. Not only that, but the rumors about how his parents abandoned him and got merely a slap on the wrist and told to live in another state always brought disgust in him—not even getting Stelly taken from them because they showed so much ‘love’ for the boy. It made him always hide his emotions, but deep down it bothered him that he started using his hair to grow out enough to cover the left side of his face, tilting his head to help with that. No matter what, though, Ace stood by his side in reassurance and was always there to snap at anyone looking at the blond wrong.
“Or what, Freshie?” The guy with his two buddies standing are laughing as they had just told Sabo he was a walking freak show and other things to pull at the way he looked. Sabo was sure he would get over the name calling, but the pain of flames burning him were still very fresh in his memories no matter if it had been three years.
“I use your face to wipe the floor with!” Ace snaps as he defends his friend with a firm stance and head held high no matter if he hadn’t fully got his growth spurt for height yet, which actually made Sabo taller than him at the moment—even though he wasn’t done growing either.
Another fight broke out, Sabo never leaving his friend vulnerable even if he was still bothered by it all. A twinge always got to him as he easily twisted one guy’s arm and swung him into the lockers to have the face slam first. It caused the guy to stay down, letting him drop to the ground, and Ace pummeled another guy while kicking the other guy to back off and Sabo let’s his face twist in anger. It boils in him at the thought of someone hurting his friend and he easily shifts fingers to do a type of claw. Approaching the other guy that was kicked away, he grabs to his face and trips him to soon throw him onto his back down to the concrete hall floors heavily.
“BREAK IT UP!” A teacher is hollering as Sabo quickly grabs to Ace to get him to pull away from the student he had been wailing on, the one to make the comments in the first place. The guy’s face was no doubt going to be bruised, blood coming from a split lip and he could only crumple to the ground in whimpers.
“Don’t you ever talk about him like that again!” Ace roars out in anger and lets out a dangerous type of growl in his throat to show his displeasure of it even happening in the first place.
“Ace, Sabo! To the Principle’s office now!”
That wasn’t the first time they had heard those words and definitely was not the last.
~.~.~
Ace is such a free spirit; Junior year becomes more spontaneous for him as girls start noticing his dreamy body after he began to go on runs through town more. Along with him is Sabo, showing to be rather well-defined and showing to be able to control his emotions better. It fools everyone, giving a smile that is fake to all the people around him except Ace, where he shows a true one that reaches his eyes. As they grow older, it shows how much they would soon enough get people flirting with them, but Sabo was harder to persuade into a date than Ace.
Which Sabo gritted his teeth when Ace started to date and have a girl hanging onto him like he was some hanger and she was clothes. On most occasions it didn’t last long, but Sabo still had to hold his tongue at what his friend wanted to do and it was evident he placed himself by Ace’s side no matter what. A couple times he tried to appease others by giving in to date, but the girls always got irritated when he didn’t want to engage in any kind of touching with them, being bothered to the max. The farthest he gave was a hand or his arm for them to grasp onto to appease them, but anything more had him direct himself away as even the hand holding pushes his limits.
“Excuse you?” Ace asks out in disbelief at the new fling he has going on and Sabo approaches in time to witness as Ace shoves the girl off from him. It secretly gives Sabo satisfaction of such a sight and wish he could yank the woman’s hair to get her away from his friend. “Get the fuck away from me if you are going to talk like that!” The words have Sabo pause in his tracks enough away to not disturb what was happening, maybe a little too happy as it looked like a break-up.
“You pick him over your girlfriend?!” The girl shouts and they hardly noticed Sabo had approached as most people stare while somewhat gathering to have him blend with the crowd. They were right outside of the school and students gossip in hushed tones as they question on what could cause such a thing.
“Of course! Sabo will always be my best friend!” Ace snaps out with a snarl and the blond realizes how this is about him, making him elated that he was important to his friend still after these years. “And like I give a fuck about if he has a different preference! If you can’t get over yourself to realize I hold someone higher than you because I have been with him since kids then you can forget it!” A hand swings out as he holds himself firm with his words and sneers at the woman.
“Like I would want to get caught with some fag!”
“Well honey you dated a half breed!” It was startling to everyone on the words, even to Sabo as he didn’t know that about his friend. It felt like he missed out on something and tried to remember if Ace ever hinted at it.
“Disgusting!” The girl practically screams as she soon turns away while stalking away with a noise of being revolted. People stare on as Ace soon snarls at all the faces and soon turns to stalk away.
Sabo had still been a part of the crowd and could see the tension on his friend, making him move. Shifting by people, he soon catches up to his friend as they rode together to school and were headed to Sabo’s car. It was quiet between them as Sabo kept his neutral expression and was trying to understand how he missed something so important. Getting to the car, they got in and began to pull out with the rest of the traffic as Ace scrunches in the seat as he contemplates over something.
“I don’t want to go home right now.” The words leave Ace plainly and it only takes a couple roads before Sabo follows the request and heads down a dirt road where they knew of an area to park off to the side. Arriving and both getting out, they move along down the small path, not ever seeing anyone else here and Sabo was sure to stay patient for an opening. Feet moved along dirt of the bare path as they made it to the area of an opening in a field, a couple large boulders in place. It wasn’t until they got on the tallest one, sitting down, that Sabo let himself grab his friend’s hand.
“I’m sorry if I complicate relationships.” Sabo apologizes as he hated seeing some of them fall apart because of him, but at the same time he delved in the fact that Ace still stood by him.
“No, they don’t deserve me anyways…” Ace states out while turning his head and viewing to green eyes that show all the emotions he would give only for him. “I just can’t believe I let it slip out like I did…”
“Slip out?” The questioning is to only have Ace clarify more on the meaning behind it.
“The half breed thing…” Dark eyes stare to his friend and grips his hand with a strained expression pulling to his face. “That was a lie, really…” For some reason, Sabo feels his chest clench with ache at the thought his friend not being into males and he wasn’t quite sure on why.
“Lie? As in?” The soft questioning only shows Ace a coaxing of acceptance in any way that he would be with his preferences.
“I’m… I’m pretty sure I am gay.” Ace admits while his free hand rubs to a freckled cheek and drags dark eyes away nervously. “I’m still trying to figure everything out, but something in me is saying that I don’t cater to women like I should.”
“You shouldn’t have that feeling,” Sabo starts as he shifts to grip his friend’s hand in reassurance. “If you like men, then you like men. If you like both, the you like both. Or if you like women, then you like women. There is no set way, society only sets those and not consider that everyone is different.” He continues as he stares to shocked eyes and made sure to show nothing but full on support. “Ace, don’t rush yourself. Dating isn’t important, especially at our age. If it helps, I don’t even know what I am, but I don’t like concerning over it. I am happy with how everything is. I have you and that’s enough.” Admitting to that all, Ace stares in surprise and let’s his fingers tighten to the hand in his.
“Sabo,” the name leaves him as he smiles like the warming sun. “I don’t know what I would do without you.”
“Be dating those god-awful girls.” The blunt answer comes out and makes Ace laugh hard.
“Probably!” Ace admits while pulling on his friend to bring him closer to give a firm hug. “You are the greatest, Sabo!” The hold causes a festering in Sabo’s chest and returns the hug with a deep inhale as he thrums in bliss of the contact. For some reason, the hug felt to be on a deeper level and green eyes stare up towards the sky, letting himself enjoy the breeze as he noticed how his hands didn’t want to let go.
“I will always be the greatest for you.” Sabo reassures, his friend gripping tightly in appreciation and soon pulls away with a grin.
“I know,” Ace comes back with as he laughs with a large smile, eyes closing and let’s himself face up to the sky to let the sun beat down on him with warmth. Their hands find each other again and green eyes couldn’t help but stare in sudden longing at the glowing of his friend.
Sabo felt his heart skip a beat.
