summary: Is fate playing with you when your one-night stand turns out to be the rising esports star, Jeon Jungkook, from your lifelong rival team? However, something tells you that Jungkook’s also not done playing with you as both of you will do anything to make your teams win.

author’s note: the game in this fic is just a figment of my imagination (just like everything else what will happen in this fic), inspired both by genshin impact and league of legends.

Chapter 1. Like a moth to a flame

The idea of spending your last free Friday evening at a party was ridiculous and Jisoo knew that. But when she heard about some peculiar game-themed party hosted by someone from your university, she knew that it was a match made in heaven!

And you couldn’t say no even though night outs or parties never were your thing, simply a waste of scarce resources which time is, you always said. And you couldn’t afford that squander. However, gaming was your thing. Almost part of your personality at this point and maybe even a dream vocation.

And if your ride to the destination was full of hesitation and even guilt (you could have been studying or practicing instead of this), all of that was gone the minute you stepped into the house party.

The living room decorated with all possible Vision of Fate themed items left you in awe. You didn’t even try to suppress your sudden squirm when you saw your favorite game characters on cupcakes. Looking around the room you’re faced with groups of your peers: some are interested in simply getting drunk, some are playing PS5 and no one seems to pay attention to the little corner of VoF in the kitchen the same way as you do.

Even the loud music isn’t bothering you once you’re able to catch the familiar theme song from VoF remixed which makes it almost unrecognizable yet quite conducive for the party. Weird choice but you are almost intrigued by the dedication of the party's host to the game.

Somewhere on your way to the kitchen, you lost Jisoo in the crowd of people as she waved to you “I’ll find you later, have fun!”. Well, with all this food and PlayStation, you might spend your time here with joy.

“Finally someone’s going to try these.” you were so immersed in choosing between cupcakes with your favorite in-game characters, that you didn’t notice a tall brunette approaching you. “I was looking from afar, wondering if those will be tasty.”

You toss a look over your shoulder, taken back by a sudden comment from a stranger. You eye him up and down, making sure that this boy is not someone you are supposed to know. Of course, how would you know anyone at this party? Your life consisted of university classes and gaming practices. Somewhere in-between — your household duties. You are sure that Jisoo, who isn’t even from your university, had more acquaintances here than you.

“So, you think I can actually eat this?” You try to sound unbothered, suppressing sudden excitement and nervousness in your voice. You find the stranger quite good-looking and, even though you’re reluctant to admit that, getting his attention might make you feel things that you have long forgotten.

It feels like ages since the last time you’ve encountered anything closely resembling flirting, and maybe tonight's the night for allowing yourself a little bit more of what you’re already spending your evening at a weird university party.

“Wouldn’t make sense if it was just for the decor,” replies the stranger, leaning on the kitchen counter; you feel his gaze studying you.

“What if you just wanna see me make a fool of myself?”

“Mmh not really into that type of shit,” the brunette casually blurted. He takes a quick bite of one of the cupcakes that you were choosing between. The taste of it leaves his brows drawn in a frown and you expect him to complain about the savoriness of the pastry but instead, he adds, “I’m Jeon Jungkook, by the way.”

“Nice to meet you, Jeon Jungkook.” You introduce yourself too, gaining some confidence to ask the question that’s been weighing on your mind, “You play VoF too?”

“Not really, just got interested in this little corner,” he firmly replies. Met with your overt disappointment, Jungkook quickly adds, “And you? You like this?” he asks while motioning to all the themed designs and goods.

“I do play, actually…” you answer hesitantly as his piercing doe eyes are watching you. “But now the more I look at this, the more ridiculous all of this looks,” Jungkook shot you a questioning glance, to which you hastened to add, “I mean, this is definitely not a place for this.”

“You seemed to like the theme at first.”

The excitement from finally socializing has quickly faded with a wash of crippling anxiousness as you find yourself trying to predict his reaction to your words. You are seeing him for the first and, probably, the last time in your life, yet you are seeking his approval.

“Yeah, I did but I play the game and love it, others definitely don’t give a damn about all of this and came just to party,” the moment the words fleed your mouth you again want to not seem even more judgemental, “Which is also totally fine, just feel like the target audience isn’t here.” you force a giggle, looking around awkwardly.

“Well, you never know,” his words go almost unnoticed by you, as your eyes wander around the room, hoping to find Jisoo by some miracle. Your friend is totally MIA. Maybe Junngkook notices your discomfort, because he suddenly adds, “are you looking for somebody?”

“Yes, my friend dragged me here.” Your eyes are finally back at Jungkook and for a moment you are startled. He was looking at you this whole time, his discerning gaze never leaving you. Jungkook is handsome, you think, and immediately get annoyed by yourself. Is this the right time to think about it? “But now she’s nowhere to be found.”

“Jisoo is a big girl, I doubt that there’s something to worry about,” he sighs heavily.

“You know Jisoo?” you raise your eyebrows in surprise while leaning in closer to Jungkook.

“Well, sort of… I’ve heard of her,” he pulled at the back of his neck, his eyes darting behind you surprisingly avoiding eye contact. Preceding further questions from you, he clears his throat and adds with no confidence, “she knows a friend of mine.”

You nod, contemplating if you should ask questions any further. For some reason, Jungkook didn’t want to talk about him being acquainted with Jisoo, which is currently the only thing that you have in common that you know of. And by the way his body has tensed you would even assume that he is slightly regretting that he’s mentioned.

Being usually the only introvert in any friend group made you accustomed to other people always trying to get you talking and doing the small talk. But if you and Jungkook were competing for the prize of the timidest person, he could definitely give you a run for your money. His erstwhile cockiness is long gone. Still, he isn’t going anywhere and you allow yourself to assume that he actually enjoys your company.

“I haven’t been to any parties for years, this is the first in a while, ” you decide to take the initiative for the sake of curiosity. You wonder where this all can lead.

“Glad you gave it a shot,” you catch a glimpse of a sudden spark in his eyes. He didn’t want this to end either. “You know if you are such a gamer girl, I have an offer that might be hard for you to decline.”

You shoot him a cautionary gaze, “I’m not playing games. Whatever that means.”

“Oh, something tells me you’ll like that,” Jungkook wets his lower lip, a snug grin plastering his beautiful face that leaves you smitten.

The new-made friend of yours beckons you to follow him and you look around at your surroundings, mulling over the idea. The loud music is starting to grate on you and getting drunk is not on your to-do list for today’s evening. The beloved PS5 in the center of the party has been taken by some wasted group of friends, which also makes your blood boil. Well, whatever Jungkook has to offer you cannot be worse than this.

As further Jungkook drags you through the endless corridors of this big house, the more alert you are. Jungkook isn’t a stranger, after all, he knows Jisoo and you trust your friend’s circle of acquaintances. Not to mention that Jeon Jungkook is quite attractive and being around him feels ecstatic, and you want to hold on to this long-forgotten feeling for as much as you can. But you’re not some naive person to let your guard down either.

Jungkook is slowing down which signals that you have probably finally arrived. “You know this place so well, is this your house?” You finally voice the doubt that has been crawling on you while trailing behind him.

“I’m just close with the owner,” he abruptly looks over his shoulder to assure you.

He stands before a door motioning you to take the first step into the room

“Ladies first,” he holds his hand for you while holding back a laugh.

You chuckle, “This house is ridiculously enormous, why would anyone—“ you cut off, gazing in awe at the room before your eyes.

An arcade room with a wide variety of games and machines opens up to you. You leave all your concerns behind carefully stepping forward. You don’t know who the owner of this house is but you feel a niggle of jealousy. How could someone live such a lavish lifestyle that they own the finest Arcade room that you’ve ever seen? The design of the room was surely inspired by the Japanese 80s cyberpunk aesthetic with all the lanterns and neon lights ornating the walls.

“I knew you would like it here,” Jungkook is right behind you, giving you time to look around a myriad of arcade cabinets, claw machines, and even VR games.

“At least it’s quiet here and I can properly hear you,” you don’t know how many tries you will have here, so you weigh on between playing the mini bowling or racing games.

“Can you hear me well now?” You feel the sudden warmth of Jungkook’s body behind you.

Not even trying to resist the urge to meet his mesmerizing eyes, you turn around, now facing Jungkook. Even through the dim lights of the Arcade room, you are able to catch the entrancing sparkle in his doe eyes that reel you in by the second. Your eyes flicker to his lips and you notice a cute little mole right beneath his mouth that sends warmth through your body.

And before it’s too late, your stare darted around the room hoping that Jungkook didn’t notice anything. Well, you’re sure he did, as a smirk spreads all over his face but maybe he decided to be a better person and doesn’t tease you about it.

“So, what can we play here?” You innocently ask, blinking up at him.

“Anything that you’d like,” he spreads his arms, and you can tell it took some willpower for him to fight the urge of answering your question not so innocently as he did.

You bit your lip, excitedly running from one machine to another as a little kid in a toy store not knowing what game to start with.

“But I thought, maybe you’d like to start with this one,” Jungkook’s smug voice reached out to you from the far side of the room.

He was leaning on a vintage arcade cabinet and at first, you were confused why he suggested this one in particular. That was until you came closer, recognizing the design of characters that you loved since you were a little kid.

“Is this for real the original Legends of the Wild arcade?” You find yourself glued to the machine, not willing to keep your hands to yourself. “Jungkook, this is literally what sculptured me into the person that I am today!” You both laugh as you continue examining the old arcade, getting ready to finally play.

You weren’t exaggerating for a bit, this game was profoundly responsible for your lifelong love for games. The minute you laid your hands on Nintendo’s joysticks, determined to play through the Legends of Wilds until you find out how the in-game story ends, was the minute your love for beautiful and meaningful games was found. And then later you stumbled upon an online game Vision of Fate which later made you a player of a rookie esports team where you met your best friend Jisoo. And your little esport romantic nature always wanted to even have a look at the original game’s arcade which was discontinued for a very long time.

But here it is, right in front of you, and your hands are tightly gripping the joystick, trying to score as high as possible. And it’s all thanks to Jungkook, who was a stranger just an hour ago that you might have never even crossed paths with, but for some reason you did. And now he sort of made one of your dreams come true while absolutely being clueless about games? Maybe it was fate, coincidence, or just an inevitable course of life that made you meet here someone who knew this house so well, while Jisoo left you…

“Shit, I totally forgot about Jisoo!” Your sudden wave of guilt leaves Jungkook in absolute shock.

“Didn’t she abandon you in the first place?” He kindly reminds you, which is technically true.

“That’s not how friendships work,” you take a step back, leaning on a table right next to the arcade. “I should at least text her,” you pull out your phone from the back pocket typing in the message, “You can try and play by yourself”.

You text a quick “where are you, everything’s fine?” message and click “send”. When your attention is back to Jungkook, you see the infamous “GAME OVER” plastered on the screen. You let out a chuckle, hurrying to save Jungkook.

“Need help?”

“Yeah, would be nice,” he beckons you to come closer to his side. And when you follow his instruction, he says, “Feel free to guide me however you want.” His smirk is irritating but you’re way too uplifted to think about a witty answer.

Plus, you can’t complain about having to stand in such close proximity to Jungkook. Not when everything about him is so ravishing.

You gently place your hand over his palm that is holding the joystick, fully ready to guide him. Was this ridiculous? Yes. Was this really necessary? No, Jungkook wasn’t even into games. But the warmth of his toned body right behind yours and his wide shoulders brushing yours were keeping you right at your spot.

When he leans in closer to you, his hot breath brushes your ear, as he mumbles hoarsely, “You are very good at this, Y/N, you know it?”

Gorgeous Company - DJ (idol) Johnny Suh x Shy Fem Reader

A/N: is it just me or May was a very long yet rollercoaster of emotions month? But anyways, there was already a spoiler that Johnny would be a DJ for a club here in my country, I just instantly thought of this fic and ofc, me being me, I had just to write something about it

Warnings: sexual comment, sexual theme, near sexual assault, pet name (kitten)

[02:09 am] - were you nervous and anxious about going to a club for the first time in your whole life which was both exciting yet nerve-wrecking. Honestly, if it wasn’t because of Johnny being the DJ and your other nctzen friends going, you would most definitely not want to go to a club. Ever.

Because you can’t seem to obvious that you were going to a club, you decided to just wear a slightly cropped grey top with long wide black pants. You took your “sleeping-over” back and bid goodbye to your parents as you went over to your friend's house to drop over your bag and pick them up.

After picking your friend up, the two of you drove off to the club. Arriving at the club, you and your friend were both amazed at how big the place was. After parking, you and your friend showed the security your IDs and ticket entry before being allowed into the club.

Inside the club, you were more than amazed that you were actually there. Being taught to be reserved ever since you were young definitely shielded you from lots of bad things out there. But because of your curious nature, you have always wondered what it would be like to just go out and have fun. To just enjoy life and explore.

You and your friend took several pictures before making your way to the dance floor. Luckily enough, you and your friend managed to get quite close to the stage. Meaning that you would be able to see Johnny up close.

Exactly at midnight, the event started and everyone started to gather around at the dance floor. For the first hour, it was someone else that opened the event and while your friend seemed to enjoy it so much, you were still nervous but tried to enjoy along. Surprisingly, 1 hour passed quickly and the announcer announced Johnny as the DJ which made the entire crowd shout with excitement.

Johnny thanked the announcer and went over to the DJ station and opened his session with a remix of Kick It, the song that introduced you to the NCT and K-pop world. Seeing Johnny up close and with the remix of the first NCT song you’ve heard really brought back memories of how you managed to find NCT during a tough time in your life.

Maybe it was because of the atmosphere or the song remix that Johnny did but you started to enjoy your time and the whole event. You started to slowly dance to the rhythm of the song which once again caught Johnny’s attention.

Johnny was just glancing at the crowd, making sure that everyone was having a good time when he caught you starting to dance which brought a smile to his face. Maybe it was because he first saw you originally being shy and awkward but when you started to enjoy yourself, pride slowly washed over Johnny as he felt happy that he could make even those shy and awkward ones actually enjoy themselves even if he didn’t do it through talking.

Unfortunately, Johnny’s time was almost up and he ended things on a lighter note by playing Regular. After the song ended, Johnny took the mic and thanked everyone, especially his fans for coming all the way to the club to support him.

“I know that not everyone here might be a club person nor have ever been out this late at night which is why I want to personally thank you all, especially my fans who came all the way here, this late at night and probably had to sneak behind your parents. It was a pleasure to be able to DJ for you tonight and see you all have fun. Stay safe everyone and good night!” Johnny stated, waving to the crowd and bowing before he headed back. Not forgetting to eye your figure as he left

Once Johnny left the stage, the announcer continued to announce other DJs that would continue the event. You asked your friend if they wanted to head back now which they were more than alright with it but they mentioned that they had to go to the bathroom real quick which you nodded and told them that you would wait for them at the corner of the bar because it was the most secluded, quiet area of the club.

As you were waiting for your friend, you scrolled through your phone and find some of pictures and videos during Johnny’s DJ session and can’t help but smile at the recent memory of meeting your bias and enjoying his DJ session and seeing him upclose.

“It was well worth the lie” you chuckled at your rebel behaviour for “lying” to your parents

“Damn. Didn’t think you were one to go to a club. But oh well, makes my heart flutter that you’re here. Even in that more modest clothing” your slightly crazy high school guy friend stated

Before you could even complained or fight back, the guy pushed you to the far corner, away from where most of the crowd and everyone’s sight. Tears were starting to build up in your eyes as you felt that this was your punishment for lying to your parents. But when you nearly felt the guy’s hand near your private area, the hand was immediately gone and suddenly, there was a tall figure in between you and the guy.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?! Don’t fucking tell me that you were going to touch her without her consent or worse, trying to rape her?! I don’t fucking think so” the soft lighthearted voice of Johnny turned into a strict dominated growl as he gripped the guy’s hand, nearly crushing it as you heard a bone crack

Seeing the guy in pain, you softly yanked Johnny’s shirt, just hard enough so that he would look back at you. Noticing your worried gaze, Johnny understood what you were implying and pushed the guy back until he stumbled to stand his ground. “Say a word out there and your broken hand would be the least of your problem” Johnny threatened. “Now scram” Johnny growled as the guy stumbles to leave the club

“T-thank you. For helping me. I, I thought you’ve left already” you stuttered, fiddling with your fingers

“Did he touch you at all? I can help you sue him if he did” Johnny stated, his voice was firm

“W-what?! N-no. He almost did but you came and helped me first. Don’t go after him. It’s not worth your time or energy” you replied

“You’re a fan, right? I saw you looking a bit awkward so I just assumed…” Johnny replied, his voice much softer compared to before

“Y-yeah. I am. Y-you’re actually my first and ultimate bias” you stated shyly, Johnny’s inner self was shrieking when knowing this information

“Fuck. I’m sorry that you had to see my angry self. I didn’t mean to. I hope that you’re not traumatised by it” Johnny apologised

“It was a bit scary but I know that you were helping me so I’m grateful for it. Really” you replied, slightly bowing, making Johnny smile

“You sure you’re alright, right? Also, is this your first time going to a club?” Johnny asked, leaning by the wall, hoping that his tall figure is covering you from the crowd so no one can see the two of you

“Yeah. I’m good. Still a bit shaken up but better now. And yea, it’s actually my first time. My friend accompanied me even though she’s not a fan but yeah, I came here because I wanted to support you. It’s one of your first times actually being a DJ in front of your fans, right?” you replied back, now Johnny knows that his little heart is warming up

“Yeah. It’s my first. Thank you. For coming all the way here to support me even though you might seem anxious and uncomfortable. I really appreciate it” Johnny mentioned, giving you his sweetest smile

“Oh, please, I should be the one appreciating you coming all the way to our country and being the DJ. I also actually somewhat lied to my parents about coming tonight” you admitted, slightly chuckling

“Oooh, you sneaky little one. Well, I have a sneaky information that would make everyone go nuts but I’ll just let you know since I feel that I can trust you. I can trust you, right?” Johnny asked, his gaze showcasing his more dominating aura, making you nod shyly

“Good” Johnny smiled. “Do you have a pen and paper with you?” Johnny asked again and you immediately rummaged in your bag and pulled out your little pocket notebook and pen

“Is this a sticker of us?” Johnny asked, amazed at the size difference between your pocket notebook and his hand while you just nodded. “Cute” Johnny complimented, leaning closer, making your face heat up. “My members are actually here, back in the VIP room. I’ll be back. I’m going to ask them for their sign, alright?” Johnny stated, leaving your stunned self

Leaving for a good 5 minutes, Johnny came back and gave you back your little notebook and pen whilst giving you his soft smile. “Here you go”. You took the notebook and were about to take a peek when Johnny stopped you. “Why don’t you look at it when you get home. I have a personal message for you” Johnny uttered, his bigger hands on top of yours, preventing you from opening the notebook

“Oh? You didn’t have to but sure, I’ll see it when I get back. Which reminds me. My friend just texted me that she’s waiting near the exit” you replied, keeping your pocket notebook

“Right this way then. There’s a backdoor exit that you can use to avoid any unwanted situations since I wouldn’t be able to help you much if you head out” Johnny insisted, directing you towards the backdoor exit that was exclusive for staff and VIP guests

“Here you are. You got everything you need?” Johnny asked as you slowly nodded. “Great. Take care of yourself, alright?” Johnny mentioned

“I will. And Johnny, is it alright to do one more thing?” you contemplated but asked anyways

“As long as it doesn’t involve anything illegal, sure” Johnny replied, anticipating what you were going to ask him but was caught off-guard when you suddenly went on your tip-toe and pecked his cheek whilst holding onto his bicep. “Thank you for today” you thanked Johnny, about to leave when he held you back

Everything happened both in fast and slow motion. Right after you pecked Johnny, you were ready to just leave but Johnny’s reflexes were quicker than your legs could take you. Johnny gently pulled you back and trapped you between his tall figure and the door.

“You really are a sneaky little kitty, aren’t you? Acting all innocent but you’re even more sly than a fox” Johnny commented, holding your chin between his fingers as he made you look up at him, making you feel small and nervous as he looked at you with that dark gaze

Worried that you pushed your luck too much tonight, you kept still and awaited his next words or move. As Johnny leaned closer to your face, you felt your whole body heat up and right when you feel his breath by your neck, you just called out to Johnny’s name which sounded almost like a moan.

Closing your eyes, you could feel Johnny’s thumb caressing the bottom part of your lip as he leaned even closer. But suddenly, you felt a soft wet stain on top of your forehead and when you opened your eyes, you saw Johnny kissing your forehead. Right then and there, your legs nearly give out if it weren’t for Johnny quickly grabbing you and holding you up.

“Looks like I also caught you off guard, didn’t I?” Johnny chuckled, holding you in his arms but slowly let you go once he was sure you could stand on your own. “You should go now. Your friend must be waiting long” Johnny stated, slowly letting you go

“D-did you just??” you questioned, still shocked from what just happened

“How about you just hit me up when you get home? Take care alright?” Johnny mentioned, winking at you as you left the club, still stunned

When you met up with your friend, they questioned where have you been, you told them that you met with another friend of yours who was a fan of Johnny as well. Without questioning you further, you and your friend headed back to your staying place.

Arriving back, you showered first whilst your friend waited for you. Once you were done, you changed as your friend went into the shower. As you dried your hair, your thoughts went back to Johnny’s words back in the club. How he told you to just open your notebook at home and to text him when you’ve gone back.

Taking out your pocket notebook, you started to peek through what kind of message did Johnny write. What amazed you was that Johnny was being honest about his members being at the club because every single of the other 127 members sign your notebook but once you got to Johnny’s signature, you noticed his long note right next to it.

“I know that we’ve only just met and that you might think that you’re just a fan but I must say that you caught my attention from the moment I stepped onto the stage. I was a bit worried that you wouldn’t enjoy yourself but am glad that you eventually did. I know that what happened was probably not the way you wanted to meet me but I’m partially glad that we met because you’re a genuinely sweet person. Since I’ll be in town for a bit. Hit me up if you’d like to meet again since having you as my gorgeous company whilst being here would make me ecstatic. Text me 0XX-XXXXXXX” - with love, Johnny Suh

Feeling your cheeks burn as you read his message, you hesitantly took your phone and tried to text his number which turned into a long chat throughout the night while your friend passed out and became the beginning of something more between the two of you.

A/N: gosh, I really want to see DJ Johnny, especially after seeing his talk with Eric Nam makes me want to go and support him but I'm not even sure if I would be able to get the tickets also will most probably have to sneak behind my parents if I do end up getting the tickets. We'll see. Cause I'm like so sure that the fans are going are mainly Johnfams and they're are all gorgeous, smart, independent alpha boss lady whereas I'm just a lost potato :') ahahaha, hope you enjoyed this fanfic and see you in the next one xoxo Vinet

Kinktober Gorou -Day Thirteen-

Tags for the day: Virgin and Dry Humping

Summary: Neither of them suspected they'd have any fun at a club until they met each other and took the time to have some fun. Giving the opportunity for more fun in the future.

I couldn’t handle the stupid halloween remixes that his bar was blasting. I don't know how many times Monster mash and the Ghostbusters theme song played. While drinking the strongest vodka I could buy I silently prayed to find those girls so I could drag their sorry asses home. I continued my waiting for what seemed like hours but in reality was merely a few minutes. I had zoned out waiting to just vanish when I felt something on my ass. I snapped my head back thinking some drunk got handsy only to see a cute boy who was covering his ears and whimpering.

“I-I’m sorry!” He shouted, the boy was smaller than me but his fluffy features were alluring. I looked around the club before taking the boy and hurrying outside. When I finally felt the piercing autumn wind on my bare arm I took a deep breath.

“Who are you watching?” I asked.

“O-Oh. . .um. . .A few friends.” The boy's voice wavered as he spoke, but I could tell by the slight wag in his fluffy tail he was happy to be outside, “What about you?”

“A horde of Drunkards deemed me the Designated driver.” I said leaning against the club building and looked to the sky, the boy swiftly followed me.

“I-I like your lola bunny costume.” I whipped my head to face him.

“Finally! Someone who knows who I am! Um. . .what’s your costume?” I asked

“O-Oh um. . . I’m supposed to be Cerberus. . .” I gasped, taking his face into my hands.

TS2 Nightlife Soundtrack DJs

I think my favorite part of the Nightlife soundtrack isn’t just that they featured actual DJs doing techno remixes of Sims 2 music, but the specific genres the DJs worked in were never as popular as they were in the 2000s, so it really is a time capsule for the sound of that era.

Note: The “known for” sections are limited to work the DJs had released earlier than 2005 (aka prior to being involved in Nightlife) just to get a better idea of what EA saw in their work to invite them onto the soundtrack as well as compare their music as contemporary to what they created for the game.

Only Friends Music EP5 (part 1/2)

The Extra Hour

Another installment of the Only friends music series. The details continue to be amazing, all praise Jojo.

Quick recap, music is used in three different ways:

Just background music (Background) - It’s important and creates an atmosphere, like using Disco Frog for Mew and Cheum’s chat at the bar. These I will not use unless I see a theme or something important later.

Playing with Music (Playful) - It’s like body language, the music will pause, start up, move along faster or slower. It's intentionally moving with what is happening on screen.

Verbal/Vocal - Music that is telling us things. It could be songs that have names that seem important or have lyrics that may or may not be in the show. If there are lyrics I will include them, but will specify if they are in OF, and where they start and stop.

This song starts as Sand cracks an egg into a frying pan and makes breakfast, an act of service and time for Ray. In the voice over, Sand had just described how his most precious thing is time, it keeps running like an hourglass, but Ray gives him one more turn. Now, he’s choosing to give that time to Ray by making breakfast. Today, Ray isn't an intruder demanding precious time from a reluctant Sand. Today, Sand is happily giving Ray his time.

Two important themes in this song are resilience and connection. Ray’s need for connection was front and center in the last episode, when we saw Mew and Ray’s past. Last episode Sand and Ray started to build their connection, their relationship, but it's foundation is built on sand, and once it rains and the waters rise, the house will fall. This unsteadiness will continue to be a theme this episode.

The second theme of the song is resilience. Love and relationships can and will be tough, but the song seems to allude to the fact that if they can find their way back together, then their love could survive.

Last episode we touched on the song, Almost the Same. “Without the words, feelings unheard, can be just as sincere. Something’s not right.” Their relationship isn’t quite right yet, they have not fixed their root problems, in this case, Mew and Ray’s past. Sand is unwilling to touch the subject of Mew, while Ray is unwilling to touch the subject of who they are to each other, because they fear their budding relationship will crumble around them.

Tell Me Something New is a prophetic song for the end of Ep5 and 6 from Sand’s point of view. Sand took his time to save Ray, only to find out that Ray really did have a past with “The glasses boy”. He thinks that Ray is using him to fill the gaps left by Mew. After they drive into that wall, Sand thinks that maybe it was all a waste of time and they’re unable to make a connection again and really Talk about it. If they had talked, and told each other “something new” before the end of this episode, they might have been strong enough to withstand Boston.

Later, they will be hurting, and Sand will protect himself by saying things he doesn't believe. But, for now, we get something nice.

If this is from Top’s perspective then it's telling how he's replacing the high from drugs and the pleasure from being a playboy with the high he gets from being with Mew.

Top’s song, Lonely Party from EP1, talks about needing someone to find him a soul and a purpose in life, that he’s lonely even though he’s surrounded by people. Here with Mew, he’s feeling free, feeling different with Mew. It might not be love, but for now he wants to keep Mew around while experiencing this high. Mew is introducing him to a fulfilling high, the likes of which he has never experienced before, and all the more fragile for it, whether or not Top knows it.

If viewed from Mew’s perspective, he thinks he’s learned enough to go forward. That he’s ready to try to fall in love, ready to feel that new high.

Either way, they’re asking the other to make them feel something more, “make my heart feel as much as I know it should”. From Mew, he knows of love from books, as for Top, we do know it has been a while since he’s even cared about another person’s pleasure in bed. So they both seem to be chasing a high that they believe the other can give.

Music starts after Top says “I am happy! As long as he doesn’t mess with me” and they get up to continue to bike. Music stops as Mew gets hit and his glasses break. Beginning the metaphor of Mew’s “sight” being taken away. Top could be feeling pressure from everyone but Mew to be perfect and a stereotypical ‘top’, and here he can try for a day where it feels alright.

This song plays twice. The first time is after Sand says “I don’t trust you with my life” which does hurt Ray. The moment passes quickly, but Ray sees that Sand doesn’t think of him as someone who can be trusted, an emergency contact.

Ray doesn't want to be a burden, he's got a car, air conditioning, why not use it and use him to go places? Ray is used to using his house, money, alcohol, as incentive to get people to be with him, like when he was trying to get Sand and the girl Sand was with to come keep him company. Or the song (Stay) True from EP3 when Sand and Ray make out in the car.

Ray's whining might seem like he's unwilling to go on the bike, but I wonder if it's because he wants to be useful. If Sand takes away his usefulness, what value does he have? Meanwhile, Sand might actually have only wanted to show Ray how his life is.

The guitar starts to play as Ray agrees to go with Sand. Another song, La Chapelle Dormant, plays while Ray and Sand tease each other for a moment. Falling Through starts properly as they drive off.

"Some day you’ll rise" the imagery of the sun rising brings to mind Ray. Specifically, Ray rising out of the darkness of his depression or rising above where he thinks he is, a burden on society, someone who only knows how to spend money, to be who he wants to be.

Ray wants to be a good friend, a dependable person, a happy person with true connections with the people around him. Ray wants to be an emergency contact. This faux date gives Ray a glimpse of a day where his money or material possessions are not the priority or his appeal. Sand is showing him that Ray can have fun, be valuable just as himself.

(Or it could be hinting at the song "Burst to life" in EP6, the song that plays while he's taring into everyone at the bar. But more on that in EP6. )

Even while they’re having fun together, the music tells us how they are still on unsteady ground in an undefined relationship, Sand waiting for it all to fall through and he’ll fade. The line, “I feel this is too good to be true” calls back to the song, The Happiest I’ve Ever Been earlier in the show:

I never thought that dreams could really come true I never thought I’d ever find someone like you

Both songs are optimistic, both songs have faith in love getting them through to the bad times, getting them through the night.

Song: Faster Car by Loving Caliber Scene: Top fixes Mew’s glasses in the café Type: Vocal

Song plays very very quietly in the background and the lyrics sound very muffled, which adds to the ambience of the cafe scene.

Song starts with the scene, Top is fixing Mew’s glasses. Mew’s blind now, his way of “reading” is gone, and he’s relying on Top to fix it. In this episode we're seeing Mew letting off the brakes, ready to go faster in this relationship.

The line, “I’m gonna make mistakes” and the earlier song I Wanna Get High On You, saying “You live and you learn, And I hope I’ve seen enough” are interesting because one is accepting that mistakes are going to happen, but the other almost mirrors Mew’s surety that he knows how to read people.

From Top’s point of view, he could be himself, or he could be what Mew wants him to be. Going back to Lonely Party from EP1 again with the lyric “You gotta help me find a soul”, Top seems to be only known for being Top-tier, and with Mew he doesn’t need to be that, but he does need to be what Mew wants. So even now it feels like he may not be his real (sober) self. Though what his real self looks like is debatable, on one hand, Top seems to be a critique of “tops” in the BL genre. He’s rich, handsome, strong, experienced and possessive. On the other, he seems to have a hard time saying no to pleasure, given how hard it is for him to say no to Boston in the earlier episodes. An earlier theory discussed with friends was the idea that Top was so numb from drugs that he just let things happen to him. Whether or not this is true, he still seems disconnected from himself. It will be interesting to see how his character arc and background unfolds in the second half of the series.

Song: So Perfect by Lindsey Abraham Scene: Top and Mew at the cafe, talking about glasses Type: Vocal

Top says, “I like you better looking like a nerd.” and the song starts when Mew retorts “Whatever happened to worrying about my eyesight?” and the music pauses while Top explains that he does want Mew to see him clearly, but the glasses make Mew look both cute and sexy. The song continues playing as Mew blushes. Top is saying all the “perfect” things to make Mew feel good, while nudging Mew to do something he wants Mew to do.

Song: Minimal Meaning by Marten Moses Scene: Top pays and Mew feels insecure Type: Verbal

Mew notices something a little off with the waiter when he hands off the check, and abruptly feels insecure. He rubs his arm in a self soothing gesture as Top pays the bill, seemingly unaware of what Mew is thinking. Is Mew looking for meaning when there is none? Either way the music conveys Mew’s feeling of unease.

Song: Sunset beach by White Bones Scene: Boston notices Nick’s change in appearance. Type: Background

The song is funky which is a departure from Nick and Boston’s normal genre. This genre shift paired with the piano chords of the song Strong Bonds that play while they’re in the pool hints at Boston’s feelings for Nick might be stronger than he’s willing to admit. Strong Bonds pauses while Nick asks about Boston’s other partners and continues as Boston talks to Nick about being recorded by Gap. The music builds as Nick tells Boston it serves him right, and Boston kisses Nick playfully. Boston goes on to talk about not sleeping around, how it feels empty lately. Boston might not be realizing his bond with Nick is making that feel empty. This is the first time Boston has talked to Nick without Nick having to sulk first.

Song: With You It’s Different by Blue Topaz (again) Scene: Boston and Nick in the Pool Type: Vocal

Starts to play when Boston says “There’s only you” and they kiss. Last time this played was with Top and Mew in the shower, Top saying he cares about Mew’s pleasure.

With You It’s Different, Nick is different for Boston, he feels safe, accepting of Boston’s worst sides, and Boston can be affectionate. There is a bond, but Boston is unable to or unwilling to put words to what he actually wants Nick to be since he’s assuming he’s moving to NYC after college.

The same song that plays in the café while Mew is insecure about the waiter and Top. Here it starts when Top sees Boston with Nick, mirroring his unease about what Boston might be planning with getting close to Nick.

Did everyone enjoy yesterday's April Fools bit? I hope you did, it was a ton of fun - and if you missed it, you can use Raft Ride ~ The Story So Far to get yourself up to speed. But now its time to move past my own silly April Fools joke and back to the SiIvaGunner channel's bit - for the one event I've wanted to cover on this day for months now. In terms of these events, its hard to top just how excellently executed and well-rounded Mario's death event in Season 5 with Your Best Nightmario was - but for me, the event held last year just narrowly takes the crown for me. April Fools of 2023, the Season 7 event held 367 days ago (leap year!), is one of the most heartfelt, silly, and outright fun events the channel has ever had. And yes, I couldn't narrow it down - I HAD to feature three rips from it. Hopefully, you'll understand why.

To start, I think it needs to be established just how BIG this event was. There have been far larger in scope events on SiIva before - the King for Another Day tournament basically lasted from September to Thank You, Everybody! across several months and over a thousand videos - but April Fools 2023 is different. All 248 rips uploaded were done so not across months, not across weeks - but ALL DURING April 1st itself, within a 24 hour timespan. Now granted, 21 of those were Trailer Stringers for Garten of Banban (don't worry about it) - but it still speaks to the sheer bredth of the event itself. It was downright agonizing to think of just three, two, let alone one rip to feature on the blog to cover this event, because unlike with Your Best Nightmario or Grand Dad Metropolis - there's not truly one set of rips that best encapsulate everything about it.

Which, then, brings us to the event's theme, the main hook, one that compared to the above mentioned April Fools events from prior years, is quite subtle. You may have noticed that each of the three featured rips share a quirk in common in their title - a (Beta Mix), or in the case of ...of 2023, (Beta Mix) (Beta Mix). What's that all about? Well, Season 7 as a whole can be best described as a loveletter and celebration to the *entire* SiIvaGunner channel - this is a large part of what RIP² was about as I covered in SING A SONG ABOUT HOPES AND DREAMS and Return to Collision Clouds. It wasn't just cheering for KFAD, wasn't just remembering The Reboot, wasn't just being nostalgic for Season 1 - every inch of SiIvaGunner's history, obscure or popular, was brought up, remixed, paid tribute to, and so much more throughout the whole year, and the year's April Fools event was the greatest testament to it. We all slowly realized what that (Beta Mix) suffix meant - that each of the many, many rips uploaded that day, were *direct tributes* to the rips uploaded in the channel's past, elaborations upon or spoofs or alternate takes on these classic - or obscure! - rips.

And that side of the coin is what I think Our Sweet Parsley in particular captures brilliantly. Sonic Adventure's My Sweet Passion saw two absolutely classic rips be made of it during Season 1: The first, Our Sweet Passion, is made in the channel's earliest months and is one of the most concise examples of a truly good bait and switch, playing the track's instrumentals but having its lyrics be read aloud, dramatically yet with a confused inflection, by ripper How2BeEpic, emphasizing the bizarre word choices and writing to comedic effect. In the season's final months, Harmony Friends of Coconut Gun fame mentioned back in CG Man HD Remastered Edition, gave us My Sweet Parsley, a rip that sentence-mixes these same bizarre lyrics in YouTube Poop-esque fashion whilst still playing the original instrumental behind it all. Our Sweet Parsley, then, sees cookiefonster pay tribute to both at the same time in a rip I'm sure many of us thought possible, yet had likely forgotten about by the time Season 7 was upon us seven whole years later: a perfect fusion of the two. That's right - the lyrics of the YouTube Poop-ified My Sweet Parsley are read out with the same dramatic, quite-unfitting voice as Our Sweet Passion, and its arguably even funnier: Since there's no sentence mixing done, we get to hear first-hand cookiefonster's descent into madness reading off how Amy "had to shave it". And to really bring the point home of how much of a loveletter this entire event was, the aforementioned descent into madness is immediately followed by a bait-and-switch performance of the DK Rap with changed lyrics, directly paying tribute to Harmony Friends' Coconut Gun Rap. And then there's a sly reference to Thunder, Rain, and Lightning just after that - ANOTHER Harmony Friends rip from Season 1!!

You see what I mean, right? This was just one of the 240+ rips uploaded this day, but a ton of them had this same sort of love and care poured into them, no matter how shitpost-y they may seem from the outside. For me, the entire day was like being continuously rewarded for having kept up with SiIvaGunner so closely since its inception - yet more than the average use of the term "fanservice" implies, it all felt like it was done with the most genuine and wholesome, mutual respect between rippers behind-the-scenes. And, well, I say rippers - but part of the fun with the event was that it extended far past just rips! ...of 2023 is a (Beta Mix) version of a fucking *VLOG* of all things, the Vlog that channel founder Chaze the Chat recorded to announce the end of SiIvaGunner Season 2 and the beginning of SiIvaGunner Season 3. In other words, the equivalent of an update video, not anything actually core to the channel - yet still a video that die-hard fans like myself have long kept in mind since it was made.

I have no clue who "Kai Cenaze the Evil Gyat" is, but I want to thank them sincerely for creating the funniest rip I've ever seen out of one of SiIvaGunner's few completely-straightfaced videos, one that I mostly remembered for its very funny thumbnail. In some ways, it's the most classic of YouTube Poop, with sentence mixing and edits done purely for the silliness of "he's not saying what he's supposed to!!". But there's little nods to the fanbase's running jokes in the background - The Christmas Comeback Crisis development hell, the Rave.DJ sticker in the bottom right of the whole video, and so on - all the while, prominently, the entire video is coated in modern-day-YouTube content mill slop from top to bottom. A reaction video cam of Chaze the Chat, based on the Season 1 ending announcement The nutshack theme but the first nutshack is replaced with me ending the channel but edited to basically do nothing but say "uhm", constant reminders to like and subscribe, sensory-video sound effects - its genuinely absurd in a hysterical way to see such a tranquil, normal "olden days" YouTube video be slathered top to bottom in this kind of stuff - and it shows just how far this event went to fuck around with our past knowledge of the channel's history.

But, you know me - I'm a lorehead - and alongside all these videos, we also got the very special morsel of Christmas Spirit [FILE-07] (Beta Mix). I've long since accepted that a lot of things that happen on SiIvaGunner, especially nowadays, don't really have any direct ties to greater channel lore - that's completely fine, and its allowed the team to flex their creativity and individual skills in ways they couldn't whilst being ran under Chaze the Chat's administration in the first four seasons. Yet for this silly, downright pure-fun holiday event, Mitchell goes back to (Beta Mix) up one of the old Haltmann's Archives videos, the videos made during Season 2 and Season 3 specifically to condense and help convey old and new lore to the audience. It is, admittedly, not very serious, likely not even meant to be taken *seriously* - but it depicts a sort of glitch in the system, with the log changing from a researcher team's findings regarding "Christmas Spirit", to suddenly focus on a new, unknown substance called Fools' Spirit, a substance that appeared out of nowhere yet able to "warp and corrupt the space around itself". The testing is described as fruitless, yet as the log ends, we're shown a peek into the elusive testing grounds previously only described verbally - now covered in mist as pink as the Fools' Spirit, and evidently causing glitches to the actively-running SiIvaGunner experiments.

The rip is far simpler and straightforward than the abovementioned two - its less rip and more textbox - but I think its the initiative and attention to detail that really speaks to me here. The original Christmas Spirit [FILE-07] was well over five years old by the time this event rolled around, covering lore that hadn't been touched upon since the last main Christmas Comeback Crisis episode from just about as long ago - lore that, compared to stuff like Figments as covered in Bowser's Finale, is far less relevant to the channel's status quo. To find a way to bring back that old lore, repurpose it for the intents of this new event, and all the while having it tie together with the current state of the lore as well!!! You can see at the end, the laptop screen describes "Illucidity Active", describing the dream environment in which SiIvaGunner exists within during the entirety of Season 7 in particular. This Fools' Spirit then infests the laptop, and by extension SiIvaGunner's own dreams - giving us the entire April Fools events' gimmick to begin with! And hell, depending on how you read into things, it could even be viewed as - unintentional or not - foreshadowing for some of the great reveals made during the Season 7 finale, One Last Chance [Episode 11] of the Christmas Comeback Crisis.

Do you see why this event was like heaven on earth for me, the notorious overthinker of SiIvaGunner lore? This channel is my autism fuel, it is my Pokédex - and the entirety of April Fools 2023 was like being personally thanked for 24 hours straight for my commitment and love for the channel. No, you silly doofuses - thank YOU for running the channel to begin with, for keeping it so incredibly fresh for eight years and running!! I could do this sort of breakdown for far more than three rips from this event - if you gave me infinite time, I would GLADLY repeat Raft Ride ~ The Story So Far but for April Fools 2023 -, but I think its best I leave you all to explore the event on your own. It needs to be emphasized just how magical Season 7 was for me - it was the thing that made me start this damn blog to begin with!! - and it fills my heart with such joy to see that so much of the SiIvaGunner team loves this channel in its entirety. Be it the love for rips, like with Our Sweet Parsley, love for lore like with Christmas Spirit [FILE-07] (Beta Mix), or love for quite literally everything inbetween like with ...of 2023 - I'm forever assured that SiIvaGunner will stay in good hands in the years to come. Godspeed, you beautiful bastards. April Fools.

"To the Hashira Training" Screening thoughts

Just got back from the theater a bit ago, so I thought I'd share my thoughts on the Hashira Training Special Screening! My brief spoiler free thoughts are as follows: Definitely give this one a watch if you have the time, Ufotable's animation is stunning, and while none of the content in this episode is unique per se, watching that animation on a large screen in a theater is simply wonderful. But for the rest of my thoughts, spoilers abound!

After seeing it in theaters, I have to wonder whether they'd planned this far in advance when making Episode 11 of Swordsmith Village, as it really shines on a big screen like this. I also ended up purchasing tickets to the English dubbed version accidentally, so this was my first time watching this episode in dub, and I have to say, they're really nailing it. Tanjiro, Genya, and Muichiro in particular really stood out with their performances. I also cried again at Nezuko's 'Sacrifice' which is the mark of really well done emotional execution, because I felt the tragedy despite knowing it all turns out all right in the end.

The main draw of this screening is obviously the early premiere for the Hashira Training arc, and this started off really strong. Giving the 'beginning season filler demon' utilized in Mugen Train and Entertainment District to the Hashira really was a nice choice. In particular giving more screen time to Sanemi and Obanai was greatly appreciated. I always felt Obanai's screen time was a little lacking in the original manga, and so giving some extra exposure to him is great!

While the rest of this episode is relatively fluffy, I feel like Ufotable accurately captured the dread of the Hashira Training Arc- this is the calm before the storm, and the Hashira know it. I also appreciated Amane getting some good screen time. I also, as a music nerd, enjoyed hearing all the returning motifs for the various Hashira was incredibly fun and even a little nostalgic, particularly for Uzui's theme. I am also a simple and predictable KNY fan, and I cried when I saw Tanjiro's new sword with Rengoku's tsuba. RENGOKU-SAAANNNN!!!!

The new OP absolutely slaps, and I love the imagery in it, and I can't wait until I can listen to the full song on loop. And the same goes for the absolutely transcendent remix of 'Kizuna no Kiseki' that plays over the credits. Seriously worth sitting through the credits for that alone! (Even though I always sit through the credits on principle).

I eagerly await news on when this season will hit the tv and wait with bated breath for my Tomioka Angst.

Perpetual Smiler (maybe not in fanart, but his MC skin is constantly smiling. And with how he talks, I could be convinced he is almost always smiling)

Purple (Due to S7 and Last Life, I’d say Scar is somewhat associated with purple)

Theme Song (while not his own theme song, the Sewer Cats song was made by Scar and remixed several times over. Also smth about Sewer Cats screams Sexyman to me. [EDIT] Super Fast Build Mode could also be his theme song, has no lyrics though which is why I didn’t initially count it)

Technically Antagonist (in S7, he played a corrupt politician who was screwing over an island. In 3rd Life, if you watch the Red Army’s POV, Scar is clearly the antagonist. He was also King Ren’s hired assassin. So)

Suit guy (Scar has several suit skins. He has the Convex suit, which is a black suit with diamond cufflings + tie. He has the Hermits in Black suit from A77. He has his Mayor suit from S7. He has his blue pinstripe suit from S7, as well as a green suit also from S7. His S8 outfit isn’t just a suit but it is suit enough to count, same with his Create Mod outfit)

Uniform (in S6 he has the General Angry Eyes uniform, and in S9 he is wearing a uniform while working on his theme park)

Long Coat/Cape/Robe (Both of his wizard outfits seem to be robes.)

There are more things on the checklist obviously, and I’m not entirely sure how to find the checklist cause fandom wiki (and thus sexypedia) sucks. But!! I just thought I’d say all of this to get it outta my brain

When (most) songs appear in Camp Here & There

**SPOILERS FOR CHNT**

Ok so I'm a little normal about CHNT. Just finished it recently, and I really loved the musical motifs. Big Will Wood fan. The full songs that came from the podcast are some of my fav Will Wood songs, so it was unbelievably cool to slowly realize they are actually about CHNT as it went on. I was confused on one thing though.

What's the deal with Yes, to err is human, so don't be one? I know that it's supposed to be about Adam, with the Vampirism/Cannibalism and all that. But I checked all points he's mentioned, Files 11, 16, and 28, and Yes to err is human doesn't play during any of them. Looking back, the slightly whimsical tune of the song wouldn't really match the vibe of someone horrifically eating their own. But here's the thing. It appears so much throughout the series. I could only recall a few instances of it appearing by memory, so I tried to look up some kind of list of when each song appears in the podcast, as background music or stand alone. I got nothing. I had some time and said fuck it, I'll do it myself.

To preface, I didn't include any instances of When Somebody Needs You or Your Body, My Temple, because I think the meaning and reason for inclusion are easy enough to pick up on: the relationship between Sydney and Jedidiah, and The Elephant Man (who I refer to as e man cause I'm lazy) respectfully. I did however include one instance of Your Body, which I'll go over later. I also didn't include any of the other background songs that didn't have a connection with the main album Will Wood posted for this podcast. I also occasionally added descriptors of the motif itself if I felt that it was noteworthy. If it simply says end, it played during after the episode during the end segment.

First off, the reason why I did this in the first place. Looking at all instances of Yes to Err, I'm starting to realize that it doesn't have a meaning. Or at least a specific one character, like with the other two songs. Yes to Err appears a whole 11 times, and no specific character/idea is really a throughline through any of them. One idea I have is that it might be a theme for dramatic irony. An innocent event/theme that will either end in disaster or turn rotten. In file 1, Sydney questions the e man's existence, which of course takes a spin throughout the whole series. In file 8, it appears when Sydney is playing the 3 questions game with Jedidiah's package. To me it seemed like innocent bickering between close friends at first, but then suddenly turned more heated. Weirdly enough, it played during both times Yvonne covered for Sydney's announcements. I don't really know how this connects to dramatic irony, maybe something to do with Sydney's weird handwriting? But like this, many other appearances feel loose at best when thought of from this angle.

Next up is the main theme, remixed to be played in the background. Like Yes to Err, this one doesn't seem like there is much connection between instances. While listening for the first time, I thought that the main theme was a motif for the whole camp or Lucille. This was mainly because of the instance with staff bonding, and Lucille was mentioned a handful of times while this played. But looking back, there are also plenty of instances where the current event isn't connected to the camp specifically or Lucille, like in file 28 where they are practicing astral projecting.

The final big one that I recorded was Rhumba of Death, which doesn't actually have lyrics but is still included in the main album, so I decided to include it as well. Like the others, no clear connector.

Which leads me to my depressing final point: there probably is no specific reason M&B put any of these background songs where they were. Most likely it was to fit the vibe of whatever situation was currently playing out. When researching, I also saw somewhere that M&B commissioned 2 full songs, but Will provided 4. So perhaps Yes to Err and Venetian Blind Man were unexpected, and so they didn't use either of them in accordance to the lyrics. I realized this like half way through doing this, but I decided to post this anyways. If anyone like me is curious about the motifs of CHNT, they can maybe find this post and find solace that someone had already done it and found no reason.

Extra little tidbits:

There is exactly ONE instance of Venetian Blind Man, another one of the songs that has lyrics. The lyrics talk about Rowan and his fear of the sky. It appears in the end segment of file 2, which is about penguins invading the camp and holding it under threat for fish. It has absolutely nothing to do with Rowan, which is a little funny. However the next episode, file 3, starts off with Rowan's introduction and depicts him freaking out about the sky. It does seem like a little bit too much for a coincidence, but at the same time they weren't even in the same episode. Just thought it was neat.

Another interesting bit is that Your Body, My Temple plays in file 9, when Joshua has his rant about Juniper not being an alpha male. This is noticeably missing any creepy men with masks shaped like a certain animal. M&B might have just wanted to use a song with a more sassy energy, but afaik this is the only time the song is used when not describing The Elephant Man. Weird.

Oh fuck yeah I was hoping someone would do this. This is going to be a massive wall of text and I'm sorry but also I'm really not. You have unleashed the infodump dragon and it's not leaving until it's run off some of its zoomies.

Why do you like or dislike this character?

You know a fun fact about me is that I was on Team Byron Disliker when I first started Season 5 just due to what I'd heard through pop culture osmosis. I even made a post to that effect after watching a couple of his episodes (deleted now because I was sick of seeing it in my notes) that got some circulation in the fandom. But the further I got into that arc and the more I thought about him, the less I saw what I expected to see when I started. Instead I saw someone who, though flawed, spent most of the time he was on screen trying to be gentle and compassionate and trying to protect his people in a situation that was hell bent on making it as hard as possible for him to do those things.

I do think he has a manipulative streak, and I do think he's the type to occasionally do very hurtful things because he believes he's doing so for the right reasons (see for example that fucking "doesn't it feel nice to be asked" scene between him and Lyta in The Paragon of Animals, even as a Lyta/Byron shipper that makes me SO ANGRY because that point could be made in LITERALLY any other way that didn't involve demeaning her and shouting at her, I get that you're pissed off at the people who did that to her but taking it out on her isn't gonna help anyone so stop) but those flaws when combined with his genuine good intentions and abundance of care are fascinating.

A big part of why I think people dislike him as a character is because those flaws are presented as an immutable Fact Of Who He Is, which, yeah, I can see why someone would find that insufferable, but I like writing character growth and he deserves some.

Tl;dr, I like him because he's complicated. I dislike the way canon never seemed to want to grapple with those complications.

Favorite canon thing about this character?

That scene with the one guy in Downbelow. You know the one. Letting someone punch you repeatedly because you want to teach them a lesson about how finding a target to beat up on isn't actually going to solve their problems is... genuinely fucking baller and I wish we'd gotten to see more of that side of him.

Also that thing with Lyta in Strange Relations that's basically a mutual "I'm not overextending myself YOU'RE overextending yourself! Please slow down and rest 🥺" is probably what made me ship them as hard as I do. Dipping out of canon and into my fic for a second, but that interaction is so different from their first interaction that I kind of have to wonder if someone talked to him about the way he treated her. (I may have written a missing scene about that but it needs some fine tuning before I feel good about posting it.)

What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?

oh my god!!! so many. SO MANY. But uhhhh I can narrow it down to like four?

Runaway by The National as a general theme song

I, Carrion (Icarian) by Hozier as a soft and sad song for him and Lyta

The Deserter's Song by Radical Face as a backstory reveal song

New World Coming (any version but I like the one by Nina Simone best because. Come on. It's Nina fucking Simone how can you top that) because I'm almost certain it was one of the songs JMS pulled from when he was writing That Song For That Scene.

What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?

I've been saying this from the very beginning— The Signless from Homestuck. (Yes, I'm a Homestuck enjoyer. Sorry.) I just love my pacifist resistance leaders with feral partners and tragic endings okay.
