“The effect of this cannot be understood without being there. The beauty of it cannot be understood, either, and when you see beauty in desolation it changes something inside you. Desolation tries to colonize you.”
— 📚Annihilation, Jeff VanderMeer // 🎞 Annihilation, Alex Garland (2018)
Trying to read more fiction and the Autism and Queerness and Transcendent nature of these books truly has me in a chokehold. Like there’s something so liberating in The Weird, the eco and the body horror, the undefinable, The transcendent nature of area x ugh

No matter how desperate or dire, never pray to the gods that answer after dark.
I've always wanted to draw this scene, and I've been trying to practice backgrounds so the forest setting was perfect. I also really like the way the 2nd panel turned out!

This is one of my favorite scenes because of its layers and I’d like to share it with everyone!
The symbolism for every character here is rough.
The tangerine trees and flag weep as Nami and Chopper stand around Brook and Carrot.
Bellemere, with her beloved trees, and the pirate flag Hiriluk loved so fondly; they cry for they died in a similar way, and now they’ve lost another.
Brook. Has lost another. Carrot, lost a brother.
She doesn’t move, drawn in on herself as she knows the news and is handling it the best way she can as a child, however Brook does something very, very different.
He THROWS himself violently to the floor, and in a rage we NEVER see him in, not like this, he curses himself, and apologizes to the air about him, a mantra of sorts.
I don’t think it’s just an apology to Pedro, no, but to the Rumbars he failed in the EXACT same way.
To Brook, who was acting captain, those men died due to a mistake on his part, an error he didn’t think about or prepare for, and they were butchered, one after another like ants under a stronger man’s boot. The left overs and rotten remains hung about him for 50 years, and he knew he failed Yorki entirely.
He believes in this moment, that he, after being given power by Luffy, has failed Pedro ALONE entirely, just like he did before.
“If only I.”
Chopper was there with him. It was a we if anything but no, not to Brook.
“If only I was stronger,”
A chant he probably already has said before many, many times during the nights and days and hoary mornings and fantasy moments of the dusk alone and with others; if only he had been stronger, maybe those men would have made it to live like he’s been blessed to now.
Jinbe speaks up, giving advice just like Fisher would have, and now we see TWO captains, one disabled, throwing his beloved hair into the dirt, forgetting his own promise to a little boy who waits beside an aging tired man, and a man who’s lead strong since his mentor died.
It’s such a wonderful scene of morals, and reactions, and grief and loss and even PTSD.
Oh Brook,, it’s not your fault. Never was, but, will he ever forgive himself?

"You wouldn't know chiaroscuro from chicken giblets!" What a difference 8 years makes in one's art! 🥹💖
I rewatched one of my all-time favorite films, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and realized I hadn't drawn Monsieur Gustave and Zero in forever! Behold, my redraw and scene study! 💖

The Admin and the old man
Tumblr media
Can you imagine what it felt like? After wanting nothing but to face Flynn again, to scream at him, to yell and kick and scream and cry— this is a man you thought of for cycles wanting to destroy him— wanting to ask him, why? You finally face him after thousands of cycles it’s happening and… he’s old.
Clu is faced with this remorseful old man. He looks so impossibly tired, so weak and sad that it practically breaks him. Then Flynn opens his mouth and starts to apologize, the anger becomes confused and it lessens— he’s sorry. But he can’t even apologize right. He makes the effort and he still fails— in fact he essentially calls clu a mistake to his face and makes it about himself then a full apology- he sees clu as his mistake but not his own program. can you fucking imagine that mix of emotions ? Seeing this sad old man in-front of you who can’t possibly be the same man you’ve been harboring all this hate for. But you’ve known nothing but anger and confusion for most of your runtime, what else is there to feel? Then he apologizes… but he’s not… then he’s doing everything in his power to stop you for some stranger— a son. Is that not what you are? The two of you were supposed to build the perfect system (same team? We’re always on the same team.) doesn’t he see this is all you have left- escape is the only way out? No he’s never seen- the anger returns.
Anyways… thinking about how the concept of Aging and children being non existant to programs (there is old programs but it is not a fast process. You’d need to be ancient) and how that plays into the final fight with Clu. How Flynn is so close but so far to understanding where he had messed up, how Clu is in a way the forgotten son.
The absolute desperation of Clu’s face to reach the portal for some mythical better place. It becomes so clear in that moment it was never about domination or control, and it hits me almost as hard as when Sam and Flynn reunite.

HI INFO DUMP TIME
👇👇👇👇👇👇
A scene working on for a study. It's about a creature the character on the right caught to study why creatures in their world are growing very large suddenly. He thinks it has something to do with stuff the leader of their continent is hiding and is trying to figure it out.
His main goal is equality between the species, and the leading species(his species) has been more territorial than usual, so he wants to figure out a way to settle the tension to prove to his mother that he would be a good replacement for her when she retires.
His mother, Sargent Lailac, is the continetal leaders chosen soldier to watch over the wyvers territory and has to make sure the wyver species (character on the lefts' species) stays in line. She knows what the counselor is hiding but wants to keep it from her son and tries her best to stop him from finding anything out (failed)
The last part goes by fast cause I had to leave but here's what it says
Olive: "I was thinking of building a small study for her, closer to the forest."
Sil: "Did you tell your mom yet?"
Olive: "No..I was going to tell her after the festival."
Sil: "Wait.."
Sil: "Do you really think that's a good idea? Lailac seemed pretty clear she didn't want you snooping around in counselor business."

Revisiting the conversation scene on my last rewatch made me appreciate this scene more for its subtleties.
Initially I saw it as Dave being dismissive and changing the subject. It’s actually a misunderstanding. Hal asks his questions in a more rhetorical manner/asking if Dave felt anything was off/had similar concerns. He’s not outright saying it’s his own worries until the end of the conversation. Thus dave comes to the conclusion that Hal must’ve sensed some doubt and apprehension from him or Frank and was checking in on him. It’s more “oh, you’re working on your crew psychology report” > “give me the report.”
It makes additional sense when you think about the context of emotion. Never certain if Hal has those genuine emotions, it feels like he does but you can’t know. He’s never expressed worry/doubt before… at least that’s what it seems like in the way he discussed it as a question and how “silly” he claims he’s being. Also that Dave doesn’t catch on, it’s understandable because the first thought shouldn’t be the computer developed anxiety.
It’s all a bit sad looking back on it, as it’s a logical misunderstanding to make but if Dave caught on or agreed maybe things would’ve gone better for their little crew. Questionably, as this would’ve eased Hal but not suddenly fixed the mental break.
Tumblr media
Side note Hal’s “of course I am🥺” gets me every time. The little guys so nervous and unsure and doesn’t know how to express it.
