Introducing Clay to your family for the first time and he brings all the guys with him for support 😂

Bringing In Reinforcements
Clay Spenser x Reader
Clay Spenser Masterlist
Summary: Clay gets super nervous over meeting your family for the first time, so he gets his brothers to come with him as reinforcements.
The house was still, the only sound was the low hum from the radio as you started getting everything ready for the post Christmas buffet that your family had every year. This year it was your turn to host and as the family was getting bigger every year it made sense as you had the biggest house. Looking around the kitchen you looked at all of the sides covered in trays of finger food. All of the packaging tossed onto the island in the centre of the room. Grabbing your notebook you started to work out the timings for when each tray needed to go into the oven.
You had decided to leave Clay sleeping in bed, he didn’t get back from the spin up until the early hours of the morning. The plans you had for the Christmas season changed due to his work. This was your first Christmas together so he hadn’t met your parents yet, but today was the day they would finally meet the guy who had stolen your heart.
Clay woke up to an empty bed, causing a frown to appear on his face. Rolling out of bed he pulled on a pair of sweatpants before coming to look for you. He knew you would have gotten up early this morning to prepare for your family coming round later today. The moment he walked into the kitchen he felt like his heart was going to explode, the sight of you with bed hair and wearing nothing but one of his shirts not only made his heart skip a beat but made his dick twitch as well.
“Morning Babygirl.” He hummed, wrapping his arms around your waist, holding you in his strong arms. His chin resting on the top of your head.
“Morning Baby.” You breathed, letting your body sink into his touch. “Did you sleep okay?”
“Like a baby.” He chuckled, kissing the top of your head, stepping back from you to make a coffee. As he was getting two mugs out of the cupboard he glanced around the kitchen chucking at the sight of all the food. “Are you expecting to feed the whole of the Navy?”
“Trust me there won’t be much left of this lot once my family get their claws into it.” You giggled, as your next timer had gone off to put the next tray into the oven. Glancing over you shoulder you could see the nerves bouncing off him, it wasn’t normally like him to get so nervous but he knew how close you were to your family so he wanted to make a good impression.
Tumblr media
The moment Clay walked down the stairs in his black jeans and a tight fitting white dress shirt, you nearly spat your drink across the room. Your Dad and brother raising their brow at you. Ignoring their expression you pushed yourself to your feet, making your way over to Clay. placing your hand on his chest and the other on his cheek, you gently kissed him before smiling lovingly at him. The moment was disrupted by the sound of the front door swinging open. Looking over you saw Sonny standing there with a keg and a bottle of whisky under his arm, and the rest of the team standing behind him.
“You invited the boys?” You laughed, raising your brow at him.
“For reinforcement.”
Your heart melted at his words, this was someone who lived their life kicking down doors for a living, a man that never got nervous but here he was nervous about meeting your family. To the point he invited his brothers round for moral support.
“They will love you, trust me.” You said softly with a smile on your face. “Now come on, now you have your back up lets go formally introduce you to my tribe.”

“Dad!” You yelled, walking into his house uninvited as usual. Did you really need an invite to the place you called home for the longest time, though? He wasn’t there, that was evident by his cat, Whiskers, still needing to be fed for the morning. You filled his bowl with kibble, petting the old boy who used to keep you company on dark and stormy nights.
You walk further into his kitchen, seeing the note on the counter that said that he’d be back later. You write a note back, telling him that you’ll be at your boyfriends, and to call you later. You pet the cat once more, before leaving the home, suddenly nervous at the thought of your dad knowing about you and Brock, and your plan for them to meet.
-------------------------------
Full Metal came home a couple hours later, petting Whiskers and putting the groceries away. You and him had a weekly gumbo night, where you all eat and either watch a movie or play some games, getting your time with each other you two needed in in one night.
He’s been a single dad for over twenty years, your mom having left him and you when you were just three years old. He bared no hard feelings, his life and job was complicated and she never truly wanted to be a mom. So, he took time to figure out how to parent you while being home all the time, and figured who’d watch you when he was away. You two made it work, and now you’re closer than ever.
He found the note, noticing your handwriting right away, and visibly paled as he read its contents. A boyfriend? Who? and when? He could have sworn you would have told him before now about any boy you were seeing. He needed to take a breath, calm down. You were a grown adult, with an apartment of your own and a stable job, it wasn’t the end of the world that his baby had a boyfriend.
He took a second, making sure his hands stopped shaking before he picked up the phone, dialing the oh-so-familiar number.
----------------------------------------------------------------
You were straddling Brock’s lap, your tongues colliding as you moved in sync. His lips had then attached to your neck, causing you to moan. Your hands were tangled into his hair, causing him to groan when you pulled it accidentally. His hands travelled down your back, resting just before the opening of your jeans. One hand slid up your shirt, his hands feeling rough against your soft skin, you giggling as he flipped you over, so he was on top.
He opened your legs, putting his knee right next to your covered core, letting you grind against it as he continued his trail of kisses down your chest. He almost took his shirt off when you heard your phone ring, interrupting the fun that was about to come. You quickly grabbed it, groaning as it was your dad. Brock nodded in understanding, moving to lay beside you on the bed as you answered, “Hi Dad!”
“Y/N, you left a note. Boyfriend? Who the fuck are you dating? Why haven’t you told me about this guy beforehand?” Metal shot off at an impressive pace, not impressed that she told him this through a note, for fucks sake.
“I’m great! How are you, are we on for gumbo tonight? I brought him up because I thought about bringing him.” You said sarcastically, moving to snuggle up to Brock, who happily wrapped his arms around you, his leg intertwining with yours.
Metal was pacing in his living room now, rolling his eyes at the sarcasm he heard at the beginning of your response. “You want to bring him? To our tradition?” He asked, shocked you’d even consider it.
“Well, yeah, Dad, it’s just one gumbo night for you to meet him and get to know him outside of work. Besides, you bring Trent sometimes!” You retorted, huffing at the hypocrisy. You could hear Brock chuckling beside you, causing you to stick your tongue out at him.
“That’s different, it’s Trent!” He shot back, stopping his pacing as he was worried he was going to step on Whiskers. He then continued, “Trent’s being invited if you bring him. Wait,” he spoke, his mind registering what all you said thirty seconds ago, “Outside of work? HE WORKS AT DEVGRU?!?!?” He yelled, feeling his face getting hot with anger. One of those idiots is dating his kid?
You put the phone away from your ear, he’s always deafening when he’s angry. Brock kissed your shoulder, one of his hands moving up to grab your breast, massaging it gently, causing you to roll your eyes. “Yes, he works at DEVGRU. He’s on Bravo, with Trent. Invite him! You know I love T,” you say easily, your breath hitching as Brock continues to tease you.
Metal doesn’t even know what to reply to that. He’s full on having a meltdown. His kid, his sweet, caring, loving child is dating someone in Bravo. Oh, Oh god, They’re dating that cocky ass kid. “I gotta go, see you two tonight.” He said quickly, before hanging up without you getting a word in. He rubbed his face with his free hand, before calling Trent to come over.
“He hung up,” you said simply, putting the phone back down on the nightstand, before focusing on the man beside you. You adored him, not just physically, but the kind soul he has, and the willingness to do whatever was necessary to keep you safe and happy. You knew your Dad was a bit... much, but you hoped once he saw you two together, he would calm a bit. “Now, where were we..” you trailed off, giggling as he turned over onto you, starting where you both had left off.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trent was a little worried when Full Metal called him, panicking at the apparent fact that Clay was dating his kid. Trent had been around you since you were a little kid, becoming very close to Metal as they started working together at DEVGRU.
He was incredibly amused at the fact that Metal was having a meltdown while simultaneously starting the gumbo for the night. He wouldn’t interrupt the man, he’s just here to listen and watch his friend chop and cook everything the gumbo needed ingredient wise, while yelling at how Clay was too arrogant foe his own good.
“Of course Y/N would go out with him. Why go for one of us, anyways?” he asked rhetorically, chopping up the andouille sausage, probably imagining it was Clay’s.. well... you know.
“Because they were raised by you? And surrounded by a Naval influence their entire life?” Trent shot back, chuckling as Metal glared at him. Man, if looks could kill...
“Scott, take a breath. You raised Y/N well, they must see something in Clay to not only go out with them, but to want to introduce him to you,” Trent tried to reassure the man, who this time took a deeply breath and nodded.
“I just don’t want them to get hurt,” he spoke quietly, shaking his head at the thought. You were his child, his only one at that, he hated seeing you cry, especially over some dumb ass kid.
Trent nodded, standing up to go over to him, rubbing his back. He didn’t say a word, he didn’t need to. He’s helped Scott raise you since you were a kid, he felt similarly about keeping you safe.
They were silent for a while, before Trent felt like he needed to reassure Scott one more time. “Tonight will be fine, you’ll meet the boyfriend, be polite tonight and then tomorrow you can threaten all you want,” he offered up, and it worked, as he saw Scott smile for the first time today.
“Come tonight?” Metal asked, he didn’t want to have to deal with this alone. Plus, he could just have it on his head that this is just the team hanging out and you just so happened to be there.
Trent nodded, smiling at the offer. He knew Scott needed someone here with them to keep him calm, and he was secretly hoping he’d ask him to stay anyways, the guy makes a mean gumbo.
——————————
It was three hours later, and Brock was suddenly incredibly nervous. He knew Metal was going to kill him, especially because it was his only kid that we’re talking about. He was in love with them, though, so he guessed he’d make it work.
“It’s going to be fine, Dad’s just a big teddy bear,” you reassure him, watching him chuckle nervously. You smiled, taking his hand and giving it a squeeze. Your boyfriend may be a man of few words, but it was no secret he was worried about your dad’s reaction.
The silence was comfortable as he drove you both towards your childhood home. He was quiet, taking in the site of the place where Metal raised you, squeezing your hand when he heard you take a shaky breath.
“Hey,” he said quietly, catching your attention as you were getting lost in your worries. “I love you, Y/N/N.”
You smile brightly, saying “I love you too,” before he pulls you in for a kiss, all and full of adoration. He breaks away for a few moments, kissing your nose in the process, causing you to giggle.
You lead him up the steps to the front door, noting that Trent’s bike was in it’s usual spot. You smiled a little, happy your dad’s boyfriend was here to enjoy the chaos. You whispered to Brock, “I told you my dad and Trent were together, right?”
Brock’s eyes widened, shaking his head. Oh, this was going to be fun, he thought, before taking a deep breath. You smile at him, before opening the door, going into your family home, which was warm and the smell of the spices in the gumbo. You picked up Whiskers, who was hanging out in the cat tree by the entryway, and said to Brock, “This is Mr. Whiskers, he used to keep me safe when it was storming and Dad was on a mission.”
Brock saw the way your eyes lit up with you saw the cat, and his heart melted a little bit. He pet the furry creature, personally he wasn’t a fan of cats but he couldn’t help but pet him.
You put him down, taking his hand as you guide him further into the home, yelling, “T, Dad! We’re here!” You give his hand a squeeze, bringing  him to the living room.
Trent came out from the living room, smiling as he saw you with... Brock. “Hey kid,” he hugged you tightly, before finally breaking, laughing hysterically at the fact that it was Brock you were with.
Oh, this was going to be fun.
Metal left the kitchen, hearing his boyfriend of five years laughing hysterically. He walks in, seeing Trent doubled over in laughter, looking at you, smiling. “Hey baby,” He spoke softly, opening his arms for a hug, looking at who she brought with her, completely expect Clay, and not... Brock?
“Brock? Dog boy? Seriously?” He asked, causing Brock to laugh a little bit.
You backed away from your Dad, going to your boyfriend, who immediately wrapped his arm around your shoulders. You shot back, “Well, yeah? Who else would I have gone for, Sonny?”
Oh, yeah, that broke Metal.
He just stared at you two, trying to form words, but his brain was short-circuiting. Trent was in tears, laughing so hard he couldn’t breathe. “Didn’t.... see that...coming,” he finally got out, grabbing onto Metal’s shoulder yo hold him up.
“I thought you were dating Clay,” your dad said slowly, shaking his head at the fact you brought the weird one home... typical.
You look at him confused, “No... Brock and I have been together for almost a year,” you tell him gently, smiling as your feel Brock kiss your forehead. You leaned into him for comfort, worried about what your dad will say.
“I... alright,” he sighed, smiling as Trent kissed him on the cheek. Trent was proud of him being calm, and not threatening your boyfriend. In reality, he was planning Brock’s death a very violent way, and where to hide the body.
The night went smoothly, a little too smoothly, if you were honest. Everyone ate and had a good time, the night ending with each Carter cuddled up to their significant other, watching a horror movie.
Brock had went to start the truck after the movie was over, letting you to hug your dads. “Thank you,” you whispered, smiling at Metal.
“what for?” he chuckled, letting go so you could hug Trent.
“For being nice to him, and not threatening to kill him,” you chcuckled as you hugged Trent, who went back to having his arms wrapped around Metal when you let go. Metal nodded, as you said goodbye, not knowing his plans for in the morning.
“You did good, babe,” Trent mumbled, kissing his cheek before making sure the food was away, getting ready to go to bed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All was quiet on the base the next morning, the hustle and bustle of the military operation at it’s usual pace. All of Bravo trickled in one by one, no one understanding the scene in front of them as they entered the cage room.
In front of Brock’s locker, there was a hatchet, a bag of lye, and a shovel; along with a note which was written in, what looked like, blood.
“Brock,
You hurt my kid, these tools will be used in removing you from the situation. The hatchet will be used to cut you up into bite-sized pieces for Cerberus to enjoy. What is left of you will be dissolved by the lye, and you will be buried where no one can find the evidence.
They’re my child, I will do whatever it takes to make sure they are happy and safe.
I’m watching you.”
Bravo watched Brock visibly pale as he read the note, causing Trent to smile, shaking his head at his boyfriend’s antics. He should have known last night was too calm, that Metal was being polite because Y/N didn’t want their father to be overprotective.
Oh well, at least Brock understood now the consequences if he fucked up.

never fallen from quite this high
read on ao3
There’s a knock at the door, but Eddie doesn’t hear it, focused instead on the pinks and oranges of the sunset coming through the window and trying to stop his mind from reeling like it’s been for the past week.
Because a week ago, when he broke up with Ana, she looked him in the eye and said, “I hope he makes you happy,” and he didn’t have to ask who she was talking about.
He knew. And that scared him more than any war zone or tsunami or lungful of mud ever could.
Another knock, one Eddie registers, but he still doesn’t move. Now he’s replaying the last conversation he had with the person on the other side of the door — when Buck had innocently, nonchalantly asked why he had broken up with “his perfect teacher” and his response, without a minute to let himself think, was “because of you”. The room became a vacuum, completely airless as they stared at each other, Buck slack-jawed and Eddie wide-eyed. He could have done a thousand things — explained himself, laughed it off, denied denied denied, anything.
Instead, he ran away, peeling out of the parking lot to put as much distance between Buck and his dumb ass as possible, drowning in the shame he brought on himself.
He should’ve known Buck would follow him anyway.
A third knock, a little louder and more deliberate, and Eddie’s fingers twitch, itching to let Buck in like his heart has been begging for for days — probably years, actually — only to be beaten into submission by his thoughts and reminders that Buck is good and he is not. That no matter how deep his feelings for Buck may be (which, as it turns out, are deep enough to brand themselves on bone), he refuses to taint him, will not spread whatever bad energy even his parents can see, not after watching Buck rebuild himself brick by beautiful brick until he loved himself half as much as Eddie does.
There’s scraping and jingling as the door is unlocked, and Eddie braces himself for whatever conversation is about to unfold. Buck walks into the room, curls loose from his post-shift shower, expression unreadable in a way that Eddie hasn’t seen in a while, not since he’d memorized every tick and twitch Buck makes. The last remaining rays of sunshine light him up as he comes to a stop in front of Eddie, wrapping him in an ethereal glow, soft and almost angelic, even with his arms crossed and his walls clearly up.
It’s a little unfair, Eddie thinks, that Buck looks this gorgeous, this inviting, when he can’t even appreciate it fully.
They stare at each other, a silent game of chicken while they each wait for the other to crack. Eddie won’t break, he can’t, because if Buck walks out of his life right now because he couldn’t keep his feelings in check, he knows there’s no way he’ll be able to put himself back together. Luckily, Buck moves first, sighing through his nose and sitting down on the coffee table across from Eddie.
“So,” he starts, “because of me, huh?”
The bluntness is enough to kickstart Eddie’s self-preservation instincts. “Let’s just forget it, Buck.”
“No, no way.” Buck scoots forward, pressing his knees to Eddie’s, preventing any kind of escape. “I don’t want to forget it or ignore it or pretend it never happened. But I would like an explanation.”
The words get stuck in Eddie’s throat, undecided on whether they’re going to come out or retreat back in and hide themselves away again. He looks away and Buck follows, staying in his line of vision, looking smaller and sadder as the silence drags out.
He breaks it, finally, along with Eddie’s heart. “Was it something I did?”
Eddie sighs. “No, it’s not—”
“Because I did like her. She made you happy, so of course I liked her—”
“Buck—”
“And I didn’t mean to keep blowing off hanging out with you guys, it’s just— you and me and her— I was worried about it being weird and I know I shouldn’t have been but—”
“Buck.” Eddie grabs his hands where they’re hanging between his legs, tries not to think about how Buck squeezes back even tighter instead of pulling away. “You didn’t do anything.”
“But you said—”
“I know.” He hadn’t even noticed threading their fingers together, but they’re here now and neither of them are moving, so he just squeezes again and takes a deep breath. “Ana was great, and I liked her a lot, but she didn’t...fit.” Because the hole Eddie thought he needed her to fill was already taken up, he just hadn’t let himself realize it. And he liked Ana — she was nice, pretty, safe, the epitome of the girl he should want, but she didn’t set his skin on fire with a brush of her fingers, didn’t flip his heart with an easy smile, didn’t make him ache for her.
She was perfect, but she wasn’t Buck.
“She didn’t fit, but someone else does?” Buck asks, like he hasn’t figured it out already, like Eddie hadn’t made it so blatantly obvious you could see it from space.
He nods anyway, confirming it. For Buck and for himself. “Yeah. You do. You fit.”
Buck’s eyes widen just a little, his face still unreadable but edging towards something like joy, only to crumble again as he searches Eddie’s face. “But that’s...bad? You don’t want me to fit.”
“No, Buck, I—” I need you to fit so bad I can’t breathe. “I want you to be happy.” More than I want myself to be happy. “I just don’t know if I can make you as happy as you deserve to be.”
Buck’s reaction is instant, without hesitation, like he knew what Eddie was going to say and already had an answer. He disentangles their hands and instead of leaving, like Eddie feared, he brings them up to either side of Eddie’s neck, thumbs resting on his jaw and holds him still so he can’t look anywhere but at Buck.
He doesn’t want to look anywhere else. It should be scary, but it’s not. It’s liberating.
“I don’t know if you know this,” Buck starts, voice low and just for Eddie, keeping secrets from the shadows that have crept into the room, “but I’m an expert at leaving when the going gets tough. Every relationship I’ve ever been in — even Abby — had me fighting some part of myself that wanted to run away as soon as things got a little hard.” He takes a breath and his eyes blaze brighter, full of conviction and absolutely mesmerizing. “I never had to fight myself for you. You and Chris fit for me too, and I am happy, happier than I ever thought I would be, because of you.”
Eddie swallows, lost in the determined, deep blue that is so uniquely Buck, and feels his walls start to fall apart.
“I’m not gonna be good at this,” he whispers — confesses — in the stillness of dusk.
“Neither will I. We’ll learn together.”
“What if I stop making you happy?”
“You won’t.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
Eddie opens his mouth to argue again, to keep up the facade of the fortress he built around himself that he knows Buck has broken through, but something stops him. Some part of him that’s long been buried, something he thought he lost in the sands of Afghanistan, emerges from its hiding place and whispers Take it. Take him. He loves you. Let yourself be loved.
And it’s easier, then, to lean in instead of fight against. His hands frame Buck’s face, mirroring each other, and he hardly has to pull before they’re meeting in the middle. Buck’s lips are perfect, softer than he imagined but still firm and getting everything he wants, and he tastes like mint and sunshine and home. Eddie’s already trying to figure out how he can make sure he kisses Buck like this every day for the rest of his life.
Judging by the enthusiastic reciprocation and small, happy sounds he keeps drinking up, Buck’s on the same page.
They only break apart because they have to breathe, but they don’t go far, foreheads resting together, noses brushing. And as happy as he is, Eddie’s still a little scared — scared that this is all temporary, that it won’t work out, that he’ll lose one of the most important people in his life when he inevitably makes the wrong decision or does the wrong thing.
But then he hears it again, the long forgotten voice, saying He loves you. He won’t let you go and he won’t let you forget.
The last reservations Eddie has break away, and they fall back in, slotting together like puzzle pieces, drenched in moonlight and peace and hope.

My Type
(Hufflepuff!*)Reader X Draco
Fourth Year
There was a time when I was alone
Nowhere to go and no place to call home
My only friend was the man in the moon
And even sometimes he would go away, too
Summary: (Original request form @darcypottah) The events of the summer between fourth and fifth year unfold and you find yourself at Malfoy Manor more than you expected.
A/n: Okay, so I might have said that these summer ones would be shorted, but that was before I started writing it... so yeah it’s like 10k words. But every one of them is so cute and ugh, I’m in love you guys. It’s got fluff, it’s got angst, it’s got magic, what more could you want? Let me know what you think!! Also see the end note for some thoughts from me and my posting schedule!! Love y’all so much
Tumblr media
“Malfoy?” My mother asked. “You want to go to Malfoy Manor?” She was trying very hard not to yell at me and I could tell as I bit my lip and looked down.
“Draco invited me,” I argued weakly. “He... um.”
“He what? He’s tormented you for three years Y/n. And now you want to go to the lion’s den?” Her voice was raising as the invitation in her hand fluttered about with her spastic movements.
“It’s not like that mother,” I insisted. “He’s... you wouldn’t understand,” I shook my head, wrapping my arms around myself defensively. “No one understands.”
My mother took a deep breath and set the parchment on the mantle, facing the fire, her back to me.
“Your father would understand,” She whispered softly. “He always saw the best in people...”
My eyes dropped to the floor as my stomach sank because we were thinking the same thing: it was his trust in people that had led to his death in the first war, and now my mother thought it was happening again. After what happened with... Cedric and the rumors about...she was frantic about protecting me.
“Mother, please. Draco asked me to come. He sent an invitation,”
I looked to the fancy paper marked with the Malfoy seal: an invitation to a Summer Solstice Ball at the manor. I took a deep breath.
“He’s alone, mother. You have to see that,”
It killed me that she had kept me here all summer because of the news of what occurred during the Triwizard Tournament. My thoughts often lingered to Draco as I wrote to Abby explaining why I couldn’t come over to see her, as was the usual of my summers. I didn’t write to him, explaining, and though I wanted to... I found myself staring at a blank page with too many words and not enough to say.
“Very well, you may go,” She finally sighed out. “But Abby will be your plus one,”
My heart soared as I thanked her, hugging her and taking the invitation, rushing to my room to write to Abby and to tell Draco I was coming after all.
Abby was ecstatic about the invite and teased me about liking Draco still, but again, I insisted that we were friends, and that was all. It was a friendly thing to do, invite me to the Ball, and it was friendly when I responded:
~
Draco,
I’ll be there, I promise. Mother’s making me bring Abby—not that I don’t want her to come as my plus one, but it is first and foremost my mother’s wishes. I can’t wait to see you.
Your Hufflepuff,
Y/n
P.S. Yes, I’ve sent the invitation back with the proper RSVP. It’s included with this letter.
~
It was two weeks before the party, I could wait two weeks. Right?
_______________________
“What is that?” His father demanded, coming up behind him.
Draco flinched and quickly hid your letter behind the invitation.
“Another has RSVP’d to the ball, from school,” Draco responded coolly, counting the seconds until his father responded in tense anticipation.
“I see,” His father’s eyes narrowed. “Very well. Your mother and I are going out for the evening. We shall be back in the morning.”
“Yes father,” Draco sighed.
All summer, since the Dark Lord had returned, his parents had been going to meetings non-stop, leaving him alone at the manor. In the quiet of the house, away from the house-elves, he had read through your book about three times, pouring into the pages, finding comfort in knowing that the book was all that he had to know that you were real and not a figment of his imagination.
Behind the locked door of his room, he took your letter out and smiled. Though he was bitter that you hadn’t come, or written to him all summer, it all went away when he saw the letter upon the dining table.
Taking out his own parchment, he stared at it, wanting to write you back, but having no idea what to say, or how to respond that would make sense and not make him look like he was holding onto your every word—because he wasn’t. He was just fine. And you were just a friend.
A week remained until the ball, and his parents were barely at the manor despite the fact. The house elves were cleaning religiously each day, so he spent his days outside, under a tree, reading your book.
________________________________
Abby arrived two days before the party, and after the initial excitement of seeing each other, we had time to fawn over our dresses and laugh at the ridiculousness of it all.
“Is there a reason your dress is green,” Abby drawled. “To match a certain Slytherin we know?”
“No,” I refuted, growing red. “It was my mother’s. I’ve made adjustments of course, but it has nothing to do with Draco,” I defended.
“Who said I meant Draco?” Abby grinned.
I gave her a pointed look and rolled my eyes, failing to hold back a smile.
“I can’t believe you got invited to a Malfoy party,” Abby sighed wistfully as we lay awake, the stars coming out to play.
“It’s not that big a deal,” I laid on my back, staring at the swirling stars that lingered on my ceiling. “And, I did say I would come visit him over the summer,”
“You miss him,” It wasn’t a question, it was a melancholy statement.
“Somedays, yes.” I confessed, taking a breath in. “It’s harder at night... after you know...”
“What did happen between you two on that day? At the tournament? There was something that you knew, that really freaked you out. I know you Y/n, you rarely get that bad for Pomfrey to give you all three,” Abby sat up, looking over at me.
“I know, and... what Dumbledore said... about... you know... and my dad... and Cedric... It was too much that night, it still is most nights,” I sat up and hugged my knees. “And he was right there. He was as scared as I was... and he still... stayed.”
“I know I tease you about it a lot, but you know it is okay to like him, right?” Abby looked over at me, a soft look on her face.
“I know,” A smile touched my lips. “But I don’t know if either of us is ready for anything more than what we have now.”
That thought stopped me from writing to him constantly or doing something Slytherin worthy to go and see him. We needed to figure out what we needed, and right now, a friend was that.
The night of the Ball, Abby and I spent hours getting ready in my room, music playing for hype. It was great fun, preparing for the unknown with Abby. It calmed my nerves about seeing Draco for the first time in about a month.
“See, you should have gone to the Yule Ball with us,” She pointed out, setting an embellished headband in my hair, her options now much smaller that I had cut it, not that I was complaining. It was the easiest getting ready I ever had.
“Like I would have made it through that night,” I scoffed.
“What makes this one different?” The challenge caught me in my tracks, and I knew the answer deep down, but I was in denial about it: I had said yes to Draco this time.
The Malfoy Manor held up to its expectations as Abby and I arrived, greeted by a house-elf that asked for our names. After giving them and being escorted inside, our coats ushered off, I paused, taken aback by the glittering scene before me. It was like I had stepped into one of my books and it was a proper royal ball. My eyes scanned the sea of people, looking for silvery blond hair that I knew to be Draco, but I couldn’t see him in the crowd.
Abby took my arm and we headed into the throng of people, and I tried to ignore the stares that lingered on the two of us. I recognized several people from the Ministry, and professors from school, and of other places that were highbrow. Many greetings were exchanged, and I was becoming slightly overwhelmed, making my way to the outskirts of the noise.
“Miss Y/l/n,” The icy tone tipped me off that I was being called by a Malfoy.
“Mr. Malfoy,” I smiled politely, dipping in a slight bow. “May I congratulate you on your party,” My compliment was light and airy, opposed to the deep dark look Lucius Malfoy was giving me.
“Yes,” The word held disappointment and a thousand meanings. “You look so much like your mother,” His eyes all but stripped me. My hands clenched as I took a sharp breath in. “I believe she wore that before you,”
“Yes,” I responded blithely.
“It suits you as it did her, a fine Slytherin at Hogwarts,” There was a challenge in his eyes, as if he were trying to find what would make me come undone.
“She was,” I smiled, thinking of her and the comfort the thought gave.
“I heard that you are Hufflepuff, like your father then?” His eyes narrowed, disgust in his voice.
“Yes sir,”
“A shame he died in the war,” Lucius gave off hand. “Must have been difficult to grow up without a father,” There was no pity or sentiment in his voice.
I grit my teeth, pursing my lips together.
“He died for something he believed in,” I whispered. “It was the greatest example he could have set for me,” There was a fire in my eyes as I looked into a cold stare.
Lucius opened his mouth to say something, but I felt a hand at the small of my back and from my peripheral vision I could see blond hair and a cold look.
“Father, I see you’ve met Y/n, she attends Hogwarts with me,” His voice dripped acid as he took a small step in front of me.
“Yes, she is quite charming,” It was a lie. “If you’ll excuse me. And Draco, do not forget, you owe your mother a dance,”
As soon as his father was out of sight, I all but sagged in relief, turning to Draco. There was a small smile on his lips, and I greeted it with one of my own.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
“You’re okay?” There was concern in his voice.
I nodded and looked back to the way Lucius had left. I took a deep breath and let his comments slide off of my shoulders. I wouldn’t let him ruin my night.
“You... um... look lovely,” Draco stammered as we stood there, quite awkwardly.
“Thank you,” my cheeks flushed a slight pink like his. “You’re rather handsome yourself.” He was in a well-tailored suit with a green tie that held the same hue as my dress.
“Thank you,” A smile caught his lips as his cheeks reddened.
“So, this is a Ball,” I mused, looking out onto the happy party goers. “It’s very warm,”
“Depends on the company you keep,” His voice got colder for the moment, no doubt his thoughts directing towards his father.
“Well, I hope I’m good company,” I baited, grinning at him.
“You’ll do,” He grinned back, offering his arm.
I took it, walking along the halls surrounding the party, all lit with hundreds of fairy lights. A few hellos and introductions were made as we walked along. Seeing Snape outside of the school halls was a bizarre experience.
“Why didn’t you write sooner?” The question was soft as Draco and I found another moment alone.
“I’m really sorry about that. My mother was being overly protective,” I muttered as we walked among the outskirts of the party. “I did want to,” I clarified.
“It’s been so dull here. My parents are always out...”
“And they just leave you here?” I was slightly appalled. “You could have written me, we could have figured something out,”
“You said your mother was being overly protective,” he pointed out. “Besides, it’s fine. It’s done now,”
“I’m sorry Draco, if I had known,”
“Well, you’re here now, aren’t you?” He gave a hesitant smile. “A few others from school are here as well, I believe Abby already found them.” He changed the subject quickly and put up a front I knew all too well.
“I’m sure she did. She has a knack for that,” My tone became somber as I found the same mask he did and donned it.
He led me to a sitting room off the main foyer where a group of students from Hogwarts chatted and lounged. Most of them I recognized from Slytherin but there were a few others from different Houses.
“Y/n!” Abby called. “I was wondering where you went, you just vanished,” she scolded in a soft voice not to raise attention.
“I’m sorry, I don’t like large crowds, you know that,” My voice dropped to a mutter, while I fidgeted with the lace on my dress.
“I guess it’s a good thing I brought her back then?” Draco smirked, joining our conversation and bringing Pansy with him.
“Oh, like you didn’t go looking for her,” Pansy baited. “Merlin, you two,” She muttered under her breath
I felt my cheeks blush as Abby handed me a glass of what I hoped was not alcoholic. A gentle sip and I knew it wasn’t. I didn’t prefer the carbonated drink however, so I held it politely with no intention of drinking more.
“Is it better in here?” Draco’s voice was low and soft, I barely heard him.
I gave a small inconspicuous nod and a smile.
“Let me know if you need a break,” he whispered and then went to talk with Crabbe and Goyle.
My face warmed up again as I leaned against the wall, talking with Abby and Pansy about the party and the people and what we had done over the summer thus far. It was great fun, and a warm atmosphere but I found myself slipping into a sort of panic, as too many questions were asked, and the noise rose. My fingers thrummed against the glass as I got more fidgety.
“Excuse me,” I whispered, setting my glass down.
“Do you need me to come with you?” Abby asked concerned.
“No, I just need some air... I’ll... yeah,” I swept out of the room without another word and found myself hopelessly lost in the large house.
“There you are,” Draco’s annoyed voice came from behind me. “Seriously, Y/n you can’t just roam around here alone.” He hissed; fear hidden in his eyes letting me know that it was dangerous to be alone tonight.
“I’m sorry,” my gaze dropped. “I...” sighing, I shrugged.
“If you don’t like crowds and lights and noise, why did you come?” He asked, his tone softer as he led me in a better direction, it still stung though.
“I don’t know,” I confessed softly. “I thought I’d give it a try... and I... I missed you.”
“You missed me?” He scoffed, rolling his eyes as if he couldn’t believe it. “Am I not allowed to miss you?” I demanded, watching disbelief flit across his face.
“I guess,” he led me down a long hall, and to a smaller foyer that had a door leading outside.
Guiding me through the door, he took my hand in the moonlight and led me with practice down a path to a small garden of roses. I took great care in walking, not trusting myself completely in the heels I wore. The lights around us began to illuminate, and fairy lights twinkled all around, lighting the rose garden and the two of us.
“Is this quiet enough?” His demeanor had changed, his voice now colored with concern again.
I nodded and sat upon a bench, taking a deep breath, toying with my dress again. He sat beside me, as the same awkwardness from the Tournament and earlier hovered over us. Like whatever walls we had between us were gone, and it was just him and I out here; not Houses or expectations or our pasts. It was nerve wracking. Instead of focusing on that, I watched the stars swirl in the night sky above us.
“Lovely view,” I commented softly.
“Too bad it’s just us out here,” He sighed.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked, curiosity stretching a smile on my face as I stole a glance.
“Well, isn’t it a bit... I don’t know,” He took a sharp breath in and shrugged. “Romantic?”
I let out a soft laugh, hope fluttering in my chest, in vain of course, but it was there all the same. A blush rose to my cheeks as I focused on anything that wasn’t him.
“Maybe,” I murmured.
“Some other couple would love this,” He gestured softly, and I rolled my eyes, finally giving in and looking at him.
“And why can’t we enjoy it?” I challenged. “Shame to waste a lovely night,”
He gave me a flat look and stood.
“You can’t be serious,” Draco scoffed and faced away from me. “You’re not my type.”
A laugh bubbled through my lips as I stood.
“Really?” I dared. “And who is? Pansy maybe?” I took the few steps that laid between us, so that we were side by side again, gazing over the night sky.
He shrugged and didn’t say anything.
“I think I’ll be the one to make that call though,” I decided. “Of course, I’d never fall for you,” I scoffed at the mere thought and rolled my eyes, seeing if he would play my game.
“And what makes you think you get to make that decision? Are you going to make it for me?” His eyes found mine, his eyebrows raised.
“Of course not,” I narrowed my eyes at him, “But, you’re right, this would be nice for some girl who feels the chance that there’s some sort of romance but,” I shrugged teasingly. “I’m feeling nothing,” A smirk played at my lips.
He paused a moment, and I could see the gears working in his head. Would he play the game, or would he call me out on it? What call would he make?
“Is that right?” He was playing. Game on.
“Could be less than nothing,” I pressed further, turning from him, facing the rest of the manor and the rolling hills that were bathed in moonlight.
“Good to know,” He came up behind me, placing his hands at my waist. “What a waste of a lovely night then,”
______________________________
A million thoughts were swirling around Draco’s head. He had caught your game after a few comments that couldn’t be anything but teasing from your lips. He knew you too well. So, he’d play along.
You denied it, and so did he. What it was, however, was another matter. You didn’t seem to take his negating words to heart though and maybe he didn’t either.
If he would share this night with anyone, he would want it to be you. He didn’t feel this... different about anyone else. You mentioned Pansy, but he couldn’t imagine her out here with him like you were. There was something different about how you treated him that made him want it to be you.
With you so close to him, relaxing in his arms like you did the night you two accidentally ended up in the same bed, he felt the similar peace that you held about yourself.
“Draco,” His mother’s voice called softly from behind him. “I thought I’d find you out here,” Draco turned, and so did you, a blush creeping across your face.
“Mrs. Malfoy,” You greeted softly. “My apologies for keep Draco away. I’m afraid I’m not one for large crowds,”
You held such decorum that he was honestly impressed. The way you spoke respectfully and with dignity was a sight to behold. It was almost devious in the way that you did it.
“Think nothing of it my dear,” Oh, his mother liked you, he could tell from the use of the pet name. “But your father is looking for you,” Her eyes met his, but all he could notice was how your face dropped.
“Of course,” He answered coldly. “Come Y/n,” He urged softly, leading you inside.
You followed wordlessly, lost in thought again by the look you held on your face. He was so preoccupied with thinking about what you were thinking, he had missed what his father said to him.
“Draco,” His father scolded sharply. “You are not to be skirting around alone with her. You have a reputation and people to impress tonight. Now, bid her a goodnight and find your mother to offer her a dance,”
How could his father still sap any joy from him with a few words?
“Goodnight Draco,” Your voice was somber as your eyes didn’t leave the floor, “Excuse me,”
Before he could get a word in, you pushed past him, down the hall toward the sitting room that held the rest of his friends, leaving him alone with his father.
“Father,” Draco snapped. “That was uncalled for,” His glare matched his father’s.
“Excuse me?”
“Y/n is a friend,” Draco stressed. “And I won’t let you treat her that way,”
Following your lead, he left before his father could get a word in, knowing that there would be hell to pay for what he was doing, but he couldn’t get the image of how broken you looked out of his mind as he raced off to find you.
And he did find you. With Abby by your side, you looked as if you were about to cry. Clenching his fists and pressing back the rising anger against his father, he made his way to you quickly.
“What are you doing?” You asked hoarsely. “You need to go socialize, impress people,” It wasn’t malicious, but he still took a hit from your words.
“I’ll just... leave you guys to it,” Abby muttered, quickly making her way out of the room.
You attention turned back to him as you awaited an answer, and honestly, he did too. He had no idea why he chased after you instead of doing what he was bred to do. He should have had no problem going out into the mass of people and charming them into liking him. But their opinions didn’t matter to him. Yours did.
“Come with me,” He blurted out. “Come... out there, with me. Socialize, and...” he trailed off knowing he was crazy and stupid for asking.
“Draco, that’s... I can’t.” Your voice was hopeless. “I can’t do large crowds and people...”
“I know,” He cut you off. “But you’ll be with me, that... that always seems to help you,” It was a long shot that his observation was correct, but he was desperate on making this work at the moment.
And to his surprise, you nodded and agreed to go with him. He led you to the main room, and though you spoke softly and rarely, he could tell that people were enamored with you, wondering who you were and why you would be on his arm. You’d absentmindedly tug on his sleeve when you became overwhelmed and he’d take you to a quiet spot for a moment and let you gather yourself again before meeting someone else.
He only left you when his mother finally found him for the dance that was promised and as the night closed, he couldn’t find you again.

As soon as Draco let go of my arm, I felt panic slip over me as I was alone. Abby was by my side before I could blink as she grabbed my hand and led me to the coat room then outside for fresh air.
“You okay?” She asked, animate.
I nodded and pulled my cloak around myself tightly.
“Let’s get home then,” She encouraged, and we used the portkey as before and were standing outside of my front door.
Inside, I sank onto the couch, ignoring my mother’s questions as tears started to fall softly. All of my emotions came crashing down all at once and it was too much. Abby explained it all to my mother, who understood and quietly took me upstairs and helped me out of my dress and makeup, finding me soft pajamas as she brushed through my hair.
“You like this boy, don’t you?” My mother asked softly.
I nodded hopelessly, a few more tears slipping out.
“Oh sweetheart, it’s okay,” She gathered me into her arms, and I felt safe enough to come completely undone, crying into her shoulders.
“He’s so alone momma,” I whimpered.
“I know sweetheart,” She soothed, petting my hair softly. “You remind me so much of your father, he had a heart just like yours,”
“What am I supposed to do?” The question was hopeless as I fumbled for an explanation.
“For right now, you’re going to calm down and unwind,” My mother chided. “No use worrying in something that can’t be changed right now,”
I nodded at the familiar words and took a deep breath, getting my thoughts under control. Again, and again I repeated the words my mother said. There was no use in worrying about it now. It could be dealt with in the morning. Tomorrow was another day. I had done what I could with the day and that was good enough.
Abby was waiting for me, sitting on my bed, three familiar vials in her hands.
“I’m okay,” I confirmed. “I don’t think I need them,”
“You need to take them anyway, there’s no harm in it,” She chided, placing them in my hands. “This is twice now that he’s gotten you this worked up.”
“It’s not his fault,” I snapped venomously. I took a deep breath and composed myself. “It’s not him.”
“But these situations he’s getting you into,” Abby tried again. “This isn’t good for you Y/n,”
“I’m getting myself into these situations, well, the first one I had no control over, and I don’t know if I could have done that one without him, and tonight...” A sharp breath in and I sat on my bed beside her. “I knew it was a bad idea, I just thought I’d try,”
“You can’t do this to yourself, it’s self-destructive,” She stood, allowing me to curl up under the covers.
I toyed with the first vial, running through my fingers. Abby turned off the lights and got into her bed, settling down for the night.
“He needs someone,” I argued softly. “And... I think I do too,”
“And you think that it should be him?”
“Yes... I think so,” I whispered, taking the first vial, making my way through the next two and falling into a dreamless sleep.
________________________________
“Draco Lucius Malfoy!” His father roared. “How dare you speak to me like that!?”
Draco flinched, and stayed quiet, knowing that saying anything would make the outcome worse. The guests had gone and all that was left in the big empty house was him, his parents and the house-elves.
“After everything that I have done for you! I even let you invite that filthy little blood traitor! And you chose her over your family!?”
Draco clenched his fists, gritting his teeth, knowing it was going to be a painful sleepless night again. Not even his mother could stop his father when he was like this.
............
Looking in the bathroom mirror, the bruises and cuts on his face and skin started to heal already from the vial he kept under the sink for nights like these. It wouldn’t be long until he could wash away the dried blood. It didn’t matter what his father did to him, he still had to look presentable, and he always had a knack for potions.
He shed his suit as quickly as possible, finding comfort in sweats and a t-shirt, neither of which were tight fitting nor insulating. It was the middle of the summer and he was shoved into a three- piece wool suit. Whose idea was that anyway?
Pacing his room, muttering under his breath, he attempted to control his thoughts and anger but failed, letting tears fall behind locked doors. He let out a yell of despair and rage, scattering the things from his desk onto the floor, staring at the carnage.
He quickly panicked when he saw spilled ink weaving its way toward your book that had been thrown about in his fury. Rescuing the book, he smoothed the pages, repressing the dandelion on its proper page, rereading the words:
“Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he is good.”
Draco had spent the few months from when you had given him the book trying to figure out why you had underlined that. He memorized it accidently and found himself repeating it whenever he felt lost. After tonight, maybe, he thought, the reason was because that’s what you saw in him.
“She’s such a Hufflepuff,” He muttered, smiling to himself. “She’s going to get herself hurt one day,” The thought sobered his mood.
He brought the book to his bed and with the bedside lamp turned on, he began to read once more, getting lost in a world filled with hope and redemption. The thoughts of his father faded, of tonight faded, of the harsh words and expectations... they all slipped away.
Consciousness faded from his eyes as sleep welcomed him like an old friend. He found himself in a wintery forest, hopelessly lost. The chill was getting to him as he wrapped his arms around himself. Crunching through the snow, he saw a light ahead, and followed it.
“Bloody hell,” He muttered, finding a lamppost. “Maybe I’ve read it one too many times,”
“Hello?” The voice was soft and gentle, holding a familiar decorum.
He turned and saw you standing there, in a light blue long-sleeved dress with white fur accents, your hair falling about your shoulders, sweeping down to your waist—it made him miss your cropped hair, it didn’t quite look like you any longer. The frost caused your nose and cheeks to hold a red hue. You looked like you belonged in the scene around him, except for the mass of black fur in your arms.
“Well, what are you doing out in the cold?” You asked, talking to him like he was crazy, like you weren’t out in the snow as well.
“I didn’t choose to be here,” He muttered.
“Well, come on then, let’s get you warm,” You offered the mass of fur in your arms out to him and he realized that it was a thick coat.
Just as he reached for it, the dream faded into nothing.
When he woke the first bits of dawn shined through his window, and the book laid open across his chest. Rubbing his face and running a hand through his hair he sighed, setting the book on his bedside table.
“Get a grip Malfoy,” He muttered. “Fairytales aren’t real, they’re just stories... it’s stupid to believe in it,”
_____________________________
I woke in the morning, unusually early for me in the summer, and Abby was downstairs having breakfast with my mother. I paused on the stairwell—not because I almost tripped down the stairs.
“I’ve never seen her like this,” I heard Abby’s soft voice. “There’s something about him that just makes her... I can’t explain it.”
“Is she in danger?” My mother retorted. “I know the Malfoys. I know Lucius. I fear that Draco might be just like his father,”
There was a pause and I sank to the nearest stair, leaning against the railing, listening in.
“He was, for the first few years of schooling, you know it as well as I do. But when Y/n came back last year, she got a lot of attention... and I think he got jealous. She was close with Cedric last year...” Abby’s voice became somber. “I just feel like I’m missing something, something she won’t tell me,”
“She does that,” I heard the smile in my mother’s voice. “Every time I think I have her figured out, she’ll tell me something or do something that has me on my toes again. Her father was like that,”
“I think that’s a part of whatever’s going on too,” Abby noted. “Since... You-Know-Who has been rumored to be back... she’s been...”
“I know. I try so hard to keep her from it all. Which is why I don’t know if I want her to keep seeing Draco, his family was on the wrong side of the first war,”
That wasn’t new information to me, it was quite public.
“Forgive me if I’m stepping out of line, but I don’t think keeping Y/n from Draco will end well in any circumstance.” Abby muttered, chuckling darkly.
“She is stubborn that way, isn’t she?” The smile was back in my mother’s tone as I stood, deciding I had heard enough.
“Good morning sunshine,” Abby grinned obnoxiously. “Sleep long enough?”
I gave her a flat look and lumbered to the kitchen bar and sat at a stool, flopping my arms on the counter, laying my head on them. Breakfast came and past, and Abby said her goodbyes before heading home, leaving me alone by the fireplace, staring at nothing and thinking about everything.
“Why don’t you send an owl to Draco,” My mother suggested softly, setting a cup of tea near me.
I took a breath in and sighed.
“He probably hates me,” I voiced my thoughts aloud. “I left without saying goodbye... and I know he got into trouble because of me.”
“Well, if that’s the case, you can at least apologize,” There was something mischievous in my mother’s tone. “Write to him, dear,”
I sat at my desk, staring at the crumpled parchments that I had failed to write a cohesive letter on. This shouldn’t be that hard. Determined, I started again.
~
Draco,
I’m sorry about last night. I hope I didn’t get you into too much trouble and that you don’t hate me.
If you still want company and you’re not to upset with me
I hope you’re not upset with me,
Y/n
~
There, that would do wouldn’t it? Before I could second guess anything, I sent it off. Putting it out of mind, I set outside to work on my spells for next year and to read in the summer sun. The family owl, Herman, returned later that evening, as the sun was setting over the mountain range. The barn owl dropped the letter and dove off into the wheat fields to hunt.
The parchment was expensive, I could tell by the weight and grit of it. The green wax seal held a recognizable mark. Anxiety fluttered in my chest about what was inside, and part of me worried it might not be from Draco at all, but another Malfoy.
I took a breath and opened the letter.
~
Y/n,
Why would I be upset with you? It baffles me to know what goes on inside that head of yours.
And I can handle my father’s temper. I have for years. There’s no need to worry about that.
If you want to come to the Manor, my parents are going to be gone the next month. That is if you want to, and don’t mind the circumstance. I’ll have my mother write to yours.
I’m not mad at you, stop thinking that,
Draco
~
I ran my thumb delicately over the words on the page, a smile reaching my lips. He wasn’t mad at me. That was the biggest relief. His cryptic remark about his father worried me, however, but that could be worried about another day.
Fate was with me, because my mother consented to let me spend the afternoons at the Manor, as long as I was home for dinner. I sent a letter to Draco as soon as I found out and began to look forward to the next afternoon.
Draco met me outside the large front doors, looking as if he were trying not to smile. I didn’t care that a grin stretched across my face. Before I could stop myself, I jumped into his arms, hugging him. He was shocked a moment but returned the gesture. I pulled away quickly, blushing.
“Sorry,” I offered.
“No, it’s alright,” There was a suppressed teasing smile on his face. “Shall we?”
The house seemed even bigger now that it was empty, and it didn’t quite hold the same magic as it did the night of the Solstice Ball. He led me through the house and back down a familiar hallway and out to the rose garden once more. It was different during the day as the old oak trees created a canopy for us.
_________________________
Draco never actually thought that this would work and that you’d be here with him. Good things didn’t just happen to him, ever. But now he wasn’t alone, for the first time in his life. Maybe this month would be bearable.
“I... I brought the other books, if you want to read them,” Your voice was timid as sat in the same spot you did the night of the Ball, hugging your bag to your chest. “We don’t have to though, I just thought maybe,”
Your innocence made him smile, the softness of your demeanor. He never really noticed before.
You and he sat on the grass of the small garden hidden in the rose bushes to anyone onlooking, and he watched you read as he did at Hogwarts. The words fell from your lips, creating a moving picture in his head once more about the Pevensie children in Narnia.
“How much do you know about the muggle world?” The question slipped through Draco’s lips before he could stop it.
“Oh,” You closed the book, setting it in your lap. “Well, I mean, I know a bit more than most, not like my parents are muggle, but my father had a fascination for certain things, music, movies, books, stuff like that,” A shrug left your shoulders as you stretched out your legs, crossing your ankles.
Draco tried very hard not to notice that this was the first time he had seen you in shorts, ever. Your entire wardrobe changed in fact, it was void of school uniforms—sweaters and skirts—and heavily relied on shorts and cut off t-shirts with designs he didn’t understand. It almost suited you more, seeing you this carefree.
The summer sun faded, and you paused your reading, a sigh falling from your lips.
“I’ll see you tomorrow?” The question was hopeful from your lips as you stood. He gave a small nod and saw you to the door, watching you leave.
Dinner was quiet as he ate alone, wishing that you were still there with him. The house-elves had made it, as usual and set it in the dining room, like always. It was maddening, being alone. He never grasped how deafening it was until you were gone.
All he could do was wait for tomorrow as he tossed and turned all night.
“You look awful,” The quip came with a smile and an air of concern.
“Didn’t sleep well,” He muttered, leading you to a random sitting room that held a grand piano that he watched you eye enviously. You sat up right, in the corner of the couch, taking up the least amount of space possible as you began to read once more.
Knowing he was pushing his luck with whatever this was, he had no qualm about stretching out across the couch and laying his head in your lap.
You raised an eyebrow at him, and he challenged you with a smirk, daring you to say something. You didn’t. Instead you continued to read to him, your other hand falling and resting on his chest, counting the soothing breaths he took.
He wondered if you knew that you absentmindedly rubbed his chest with your thumb as you read. Or that you were driving him absolutely mad by doing it.
___________________________
When my words began to slur together too much to understand, I gave up reading and placed the book on the end table, realizing that Draco was fast asleep in my lap. It hurt, to see him like this. There was no fear or worry in his eyes, no look of distress or a façade of power in his features. He was at peace, like the weight of the world was off of his shoulders.
Carefully, I ran my hand through his hair, combing it back and out of his face. It was soft and silky. His eyes fluttered open.
“Hey there, sleepyhead,” I teased softly. “Have a nice nap?”
He sat up instantly, groaning and rubbing his face.
“Sorry?” He offered, defeated. “I wasted the entire afternoon, didn’t I?”
“I don’t mind, though I have no idea where to start the book again,”
He gave a hopeless laugh. I pulled my feet onto the sofa and angled myself towards him. He sat, his head in his hands, elbows resting on his knees. He was a burning man again.
“I’m sorry Y/n,”
It didn’t go unnoticed when he flinched as I reached out to rub his back comfortingly. My thoughts drifted back to his cryptic remark about his father from his letter and something burned within me.
“Don’t apologize for sleeping Dray,” I soothed, moving closer to him. “I’d rather you do that than be miserable all afternoon trying to humor me,”
The clock chimed and I sighed in defeat.
“I’ll see you tomorrow Draco, please get some rest,”
I laid awake in bed that night, wondering if Draco was taking my advice and sleeping, but I knew that it was probably a long shot to hope that.
I don’t know how it happened, but three weeks slipped through my fingers. I spent every afternoon with Draco, most times reading, inside or outside: in different rooms of the house, walking along the trails of the yard, under trees.
Sometimes he would fall asleep in my lap, or we’d just lay and watch the clouds and sleep claimed us both. There were days when he’d play the piano for me and I would sit beside him, watching quietly. Each time I saw him, he looked miserable, but it would fade by the time I left, a true smile touching his lips.
I arrived one afternoon, and Draco wasn’t outside as usual to greet me. Hesitant, I let myself in, my eyes searching for him. Hearing a clatter and shouting upstairs, I rushed up, nearly tripping in my fervor.
“Draco!?” I screamed, bursting through the door that separated us.
I was startled by the scene around me. Books were strewn everywhere, and a large armoire was thrown across the room, its doors fallen unceremoniously to the floor. Shredded clothing littered the room and the bed was barely standing, all of its four posts mangled. The wallpaper was sliced into nothing. But it wasn’t what was the most heartbreaking.
Draco was curled up on the floor, his head buried in his arms, his wand clutched in one of his hands as his shoulders shook. I barely heard his muffled sobs.
Taking out my wand I began to mutter the Repairing charm but paused. Instead, I put my wand away and made my way over to Draco, sitting beside him. I stared at the mess around us and slowly laid my head on his shoulder. He didn’t acknowledge me.
__________________________________
Draco wanted nothing more for than you to go away. He didn’t want you to see this. He didn’t want anyone to see this. He was a failure and a mess of a wizard who didn’t deserve anything. So, he most certainly didn’t deserve you sitting beside him, unafraid.
“I know you’re scared,” Your voice was soft and low. “I know you’re lonely, and I know it eats at you. I know that’s why you lash out,”
You paused, and he dared to peek at you. You were looking up at the ceiling, tears caught in your eyes as your lip was caught between your teeth.
“I know he abuses you, and it’s why you flinch whenever I try to touch you,”
Draco hung his head, his hand tightening around his wand.
“And I can only imagine what your father is doing now, being away. I know it can’t be good, even though some part of me wishes it was. And I know you wish that too,”
He looked up at you, and slowly your eyes met his. Carefully your hand rose, and he wasn’t afraid. Not of you. Your fingers brushed through his hair, moving it away from his eyes.
“There,” You whispered softly, a kind smile on your lips. “Not so bad is it? Words are powerful, Draco. Speaking them, even though you’re afraid, takes some of their power.” You eyes dropped down and you took a small breath in. “And pressing on despite them makes you stronger,”
For the first time, Draco saw the sadness you held in your eyes and the weight that you carried on your shoulders. And it occurred to him, you had a lot to carry. Your father had died when you were young, and you had lived with your mother alone in a house that probably reminded you of him every moment.
You spoke with such wisdom he wondered how long it took for you to learn the same lesson before you could teach it. You never liked large crowds and you probably missed a lot of incredible things because of it. Then, you had to go and become his friend. You took a chance on him when you had every reason to walk away.
A girl who ran away and hid in books that you shared with him. A girl who ran to stories because they were better than what went on around her. A girl who showed him the same escape.
Lost in his thoughts, he hardly noticed that you slipped his wand out of his hand and stood slowly, offering your hand to him.
“Let’s fix this, yeah?”
He didn’t know if you meant the room or him, but he nodded, wanting to do both. A smile spread across your face as you helped him up.
“Here, my aunt taught me,” Tucking his wand into your back pocket, you took his hand, standing beside him looking at the wreckage.
“In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun.” Your eyes shined. “Find the fun and snap,” You snapped your fingers. “The job’s a game,”
All around him he watched his room piece itself back together. The ruined walls mended themselves and the armoire reassembled and returned to its rightful position. The books picked themselves off the floor and reassembled and his bed made itself.
“What kind of spell is that?” His eyes darted around as the room continued to restore itself.
“Cleaning spell,” You smiled softly, “My aunt used to watch me when I was little, showed me how to clean up after I made a mess doing accidental magic,”
“You’re strange, you know that?” Draco smiled shaking his head.
“I know,” You quipped. “But you love it,”
There was a beat between the two of you as it dawned on you what slipped through your lips. Before you could amend it, he responded.
“I do,” And it was the truth.
You looked down; a smile still stretched across your face.
“I thought I wasn’t your type?” You drawled mischievously.
“Oh, I’m never going to live that one down, am I?” He dismayed, a chuckle leaving his lips.
“As if I’d let you,” You reached up and he still didn’t flinch as you wrapped him into a hug. “Thank you for letting me in,”
His arms wrapped around you in return. You were so warm and soft, and a chill ran through him as your fingers curled in his hair.
“Thanks for taking a chance on me.”
You two spent the rest of the afternoon curled up in his window seat. You didn’t read to him, and neither of you really talked. Instead you held him in your arms, absentmindedly petting his hair and humming. You watched the view outside the window, and he watched you.
And for the moment he felt safe and didn’t feel alone. Even when you left that evening, he still didn’t feel isolated. He knew you would be back for the few days that he had left before his parents return. And though that thought was worrisome, he didn’t let it bother him.
“My parents will be back soon, but so will she,” He spoke aloud to an empty house.
__________________________
“Draco?” I called to the nearly empty house again. “Draco!?”
“Here!” He responded, coming from in front of me somewhere. “Come on!”
“Come on where!?” I asked, following the sound of his voice.
“Come on!” “Draco,” I whined.
I finally found him, he was in the kitchen, a large basket on one arm offering his other hand to you.
“What are we doing?” I complained lightly as he pulled me through the grassy backyard, down a path we’d never taken together before and into the woods.
“Will you trust me?” He bantered back, throwing me a playful questioning look.
“Sure, sure,” I rolled my eyes and dodged a tree branch. “Trust me, he says,”
Draco stopped short and caught me before I went barreling down a muddy slope and into a small lake that resided in the neck of the woods. Sunlight filtered in golden and green through the trees lighting the water and scene softly.
“You do know how to swim don’t you?” He asked softly, grinning at me.
“I can swim circles around you, Malfoy,”
“Is that a challenge?”
“Isn’t it always?” I smirked.
I don’t remember laughing so much or having that much fun in an afternoon ever. Being with Draco seemed to make everything hurt less. Between slash wars or simply just hanging onto his shoulders as he chauffeured me around the crystal water it was a shining moment.
“You know it’s okay to like him, right?” Abby’s words echoed in my mind.
All I could think in response was how could someone not?
Wrapped in a fluffy probably over-expensive towel on the lake beach, I watched Draco in the fading sun as he lounged, his eyes closed, smile reminiscent on his lips.
“It’s that time again isn’t it?” He asked softly.
I nodded, even though he couldn’t see. I’d have to go home soon, and our days were running out. A piece of me wished we had figured it out sooner. What it was, however, I didn’t know. But we would have had more time to figure it out.
Sighing I stood, casting a Drying charm and slipping his shirt over my head and my shorts back on, leaning over him.
“Well, are you gonna say goodbye?” I mused as he peeked an eye open.
“That’s my shirt,”
“Not anymore,” I grinned, and he sat up as I crouched down beside him.
The awkward energy the lingered between us changed to something a bit more nervous and potential. His eyes matched the crystal water behind us, though his hair slicked back with the water reminded me of our first few years at school, so I reached up and ruffled it out so that he looked like my Draco once more.
“I’ll see you tomorrow Dray,” Standing, a smile remained on my face as he squinted up at me before standing himself.
“Y/n,” He called as I started to ascend the small bank.
His hand caught mine and he pulled me back to him, steadying me with his hands on my waist. Raising an eyebrow, I looked up at him expectant. His hand came up and tucked a stray strand of hair out of my face, lingering on my cheek.
As he leaned down, my eyes slipped closed as I felt his lips on mine, the anxiety in my chest turning into butterflies fluttering beautifully inside me. I pressed up on my toes and wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, our lips dancing trying to find the right rhythm. His hand cradled my face softly and his other held my waist steady.
I pulled away reluctantly, nuzzling my nose to his.
“Still not your type?” I breathed out.
“Not even close,” He chuckled, pressing a chaste kiss to my lips. “Go before you get in trouble,”
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” I promised meeting soft blue eyes.
“You’re awfully happy,” My mother commented offhand as I walked through the door. “Have a good time this afternoon?”
I nodded, smiling to myself and headed upstairs. After dinner there was a letter sitting on my desk as Herman, our owl, preened his feathers on my sill. The recognizable green seal offered me comfort as I sat on my bed and opened the letter.
~
Y/n,
I’m so sorry, but my parents came home early. I hoped that we would have more time, but it looks like our time is up. I’m sorry. Please don’t be upset.
Yours,
Draco
~
My heart fell at the letter as tears stung my eyes. I laid back on my mass of pillows and stared at the words, wishing them not to be true. No matter how much I stared, they didn’t change. I sprang from my bed and found parchment, writing him back immediately.
~
Draco,
You don’t need to apologize, but I do want to see you again. This can’t be it for us, for whatever this is. Please, I don’t want to lose this, and I don’t want to lose you either. You’re too important to me.
I won’t let this be goodbye,
Y/n
~
I sent the letter off and stared at the setting sun.
_______________________________
Draco reread your letter again, laying on his bed, not sure of how to make this not be goodbye. He didn’t want it to be goodbye either. He didn’t want to lose you.
The sad part happened to be that as soon as school started again, he would lose you. There he had to be a Slytherin and you were a Hufflepuff. He had a mask to keep on and you... you’d fight against him because of it. The thought made his stomach churn.
Couldn’t he have just one good thing without his family—his father—getting in the way?
There was a knock on the door and his mother entered his room. He sat up quickly and threw the letter under a pillow.
“How is she taking it?” His mother asked, a knowing look in her eyes. “Don’t try to lie to me,”
Draco sighed and hung his head.
“Not well,” He answered truthfully.
His mother came and sat beside him, rubbing his back softly.
“Part of loving someone is doing whatever it takes to keep them safe,” Her voice was gentle and despondent. “It’s a hard lesson, my dear, but you must keep her safe, and keep her from your father,”
Draco nodded mutely.
Taking his mother’s words to heart, he hid you from his father. He gave no sign that anything was out of the ordinary, nor that you were here at all. It was torture, seeing your ghost wander around the house or the yard, smiling and waving at him, knowing it wasn’t his anymore.
Draco tucked your book away, in the bottom corner of his school chest under an old spell book, your letters folded inside. And as much as he’d like to tuck you away the same way, he couldn’t. You were in his dreams that seemed too real. It left him awake late in the night, craving your touch, your kiss, your laughter, for you just to smile at him one more time.
Even though it seemed impossible, September arrived.

Chapter 3
End Note: So, hi, I hope you liked it. Anyway, I know i have a few different timelines up with Draco and different Readz, and that a lot of you are invested in my Gryffindor!Reader one, and that’s amazing and more than I deserve honestly. And I will continue ro write for it, but I need time to get all of my thoughts down and fleshed out. There are a lot of things that I want to do, and will do, but to get from A to B I need to find the right path. So there isn’t a posting schedule, though I do write daily as a practice. I know you all are excited to see what happens next, and so am I on some things, but I ask your patience and to not be upset when I post something different. I am human, I do have anxiety and depression and executive dysfunction as well as a life outside of writing unfortunately, so cut your girl some slack. I love all of you and what means the most to me is seeing reblogs and comments, not just like/kudos. I have extreme anxiety and those really help me calm down and feel like I’m wanted and doing the right thing. It’s stupid sure, but it’s me and I can accept and love that part of me too. I love you guys so much.

Riley’s POV
A knock came on my door way too early for my liking. I swung my legs over my bed, recognizing that I was late for breakfast with Daniel. After I told him I needed to talk to him, though he was out with a date, he asked if we could grab breakfast. I checked through my peephole, recognizing my best friend scrolling through his phone, waiting for me to open.
I unlocked the door, and Daniel immediately walked in, urging me in and closing the door quickly. “If you need to talk to me about that man next door I just saw walk down the stairwell, I’m all ears.” He fanned himself as he fell back on my couch. “Did he look familiar to you?” I asked, taking a seat next to him, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes.
Daniel looked away from me at the wall, appearing as if he was trying to put the face to someone. “He doesn’t ring a bell. Should he?” I nodded as I sat back. “Well, tell me! Did you hook up? Was he an old fling?” Unfortunately no.
“No, but you might recall the best friend I borrowed your parents boat for.” “Wait, oh my gosh. The prince. That was the hot best friend that you had intentions with.” It started to come back to him. “Oh my gosh, this is your chance.” He grabbed the pillow next to him and placed it in his lap.
“You know I told you, no more random hook-ups. I’m past it.” “Look, I know you were going through a lot and I’m not saying go hook up with him, but you can’t deny he’s hot and yeah, he seemed like a dick that night, but there may be more to him than what meets the eye.” I laughed as he wiggled his eyebrows. “Now, go get ready and I’ll wait on you. A chai tea latte and cronut is calling us before we go to hell.”
I pulled one of my work shirts out of the closet, matching Daniel, and a pair of black shorts. I grabbed my tennis shoes and placed them into my bag that carried my extra clothes.
Daniel and I walked into the place we’d been into so many times before. “Ah, we were starting to get worried! We hadn’t seen either of you in a couple of weeks.” Abigail, the owner exclaimed as we walked in. “Life has been crazy, Abbi, but we’re back and better than ever.” Daniel said as we made it up to the counter. We grabbed our usual and walked out the door to head to work.
As we walked down the sidewalk, enjoying our sugary goodness, Daniel talked about the plan he had made for my birthday already. “Just promise me it’s not a night of clubbing this time.” “What? Last year’s shindig didn’t make you want to do it all over again?” I recalled the hangovers Daniel and I had both experienced last year while we were living together. We fought desperately all morning for the bathroom and we didn’t speak of alcohol for a few weeks.
“No, but really I want to go more your speed this year. I say we go back to my place, games, drinks, music, and just chill out. Good food, it’ll be great. We can all go out for dinner and it’ll be a good night. Maybe you can even invite you know who.” I shook my head. “It sounds like a perfect night, I’m down. But, I doubt Drake will say yes to that, we’ve barely talked, remember?”
The day went by slowly as the customers were in and out. Surprisingly enough, Joe didn’t come in until right when Daniel and I were leaving. He made his typical snide remarks as we walked out the door without so much as a goodbye. It was seven at night so we each grabbed some food on the way home. My apartment came before Daniel’s, though his wasn’t that much farther. We said our goodbyes and I walked towards the door of my building.
“Here, let me grab that for you.” Drake rushed up behind me, coming from the other way with a bag of food in his arms. He grabbed the door as I walked in. I could feel Daniel watching and knew I’d be getting a phone call later that night. “Thank you.” I said, giving a smile. “I’m going to take the elevator, it’s been a long day. Want me to hold it for you?” I asked, walking past the stairwell. “Uh, sure.”
“I recognize that shirt.” Drake said with a small grin. I looked down at my work shirt. “Oh, this old place? I hope you got good service.” “Service with a smile.” I shook my head as we both got off on the third floor.
“Hey, do you actually want to come over and eat dinner at my place? I know eating by yourself can get lonely, I’ve done it for a few months now.” Bold move, Riley. “Are you sure? I’d hate to intrude.” “You’re not at all intruding.” I said. “But, don’t feel forced either! I was just pitching the idea, I can give you some tips about the city, I don’t know.” Stumbling over my words was an art.
“I’d like that.”

Cinderella au - aftg
Ok ok, I know that I’m supposed to be working on my vixen!neil au (and I am! It’s just taking a bit because I apparently can’t write short fics to save my life), but I just watched the live action Cinderella and I have Thoughts.
Neil is Cinderella, because while Andrew is totally the one with the evil barely-related family, it wouldn’t make sense for Andrew to go to a ball. Also, when Neil’s mom dies, his situation becomes worse, like Cinderella.
Lola is the evil stepmother but Nathan never goes to jail or dies. There’s no stepsisters (there could be if you want the Moriyamas, but I don’t because that just adds a whole other layer that I don’t want to deal with, also we like things soft) but the rest of the inner circle fills that role of pushing Neil down
Nathan has some high rank and is affiliated with the army. He’s not a captain or general by any means but has a reputation of being lethal.
Mary was the one with the real power (maybe a countess or foreign duchess), so Nathan married up. When she died, Stuart wanted to take Neil under his wing, but Nathan didn’t want to lose hold of the one thing that tied him to power so he argued that Neil should stay with him because Lola could provide some “maternal love”.
Neil is forced to do household chores and clean up after his father and his circle’s kills. He’s also forced to learn how to use knives to help them in the future
Bee is the queen, she is sisters with Abby, who marries Wymack
Andrew and Aaron are Bee’s kids, Kevin and Dan are Abby and Wymack’s
Wymack is part of the army, maybe the general or something. He teaches Dan the people skills while Kevin cares more about being the best swordsman
Aaron follows his aunt and becomes a healer while Andrew becomes a skilled cavalier
They all play a sport *cough exy cough* that they made up when they were little kids (and that’s why the rules are so screwed up)
Aaron wants a ball because he fell in love with a foreign princess (Katelyn) but Andrew doesn’t like her so Aaron wants Bee’s approval to trump Andrew
When he were younger, Andrew was kidnapped by Drake and he saw some human trafficking and Drake almost got to him. Renee saved him and got him to the royal guard. Andrew became an advocate for cleaning up the kingdom and became close friends with Renee
Bee adopted Andrew and Aaron when Tilda first abandoned them. Tilda tried to take one back but Bee made her realize that guilt wasn’t going to make her a good mother so Tilda left them in Bee’s care
Nicky and the twins know each other and their relation. Nicky’s parents are influential so although Bee has tried to save him, she can’t really take him away without causing a scandal, which she doesn’t think will be good for him. Instead, she suggests that he study under an ambassador. Nicky gets to travel and meet Erik, the prince of some place more powerful than Bee’s, and thus Luther’s, kingdom. Nicky is happy and lovesick and takes over as ambassador to Erik’s kingdom
ANYWAY
Aaron wants a ball
Bee says yes
Andrew is upset because Bee says everyone has to go, so he spitefully says that EVERYONE includes commoners, so now the whole freaking kingdom is invited
Bee privately thinks this is funny and that maybe it will mean that Andrew will find a nice boy
Dan thinks its hilarious and while Kevin is upset that it’ll take time away from practicing, it’s making Andrew take out his anger during practice
Invitations go out, announcements are made
Nathan decides he wants to go in order to social climb
He doesn’t want Neil to go because having a kid will make him look less serious
Neil doesn’t care but Matt, who is one of the servants (stable boy), wants to go and wants Neil to go because he wants his friend to have fun
Lola sends Neil to Allison’s dressmaking shop to order a dress
Allison has Renee over when Neil goes. Renee takes one look at Neil and sees someone who’s been hurt and needs help. Allison sees a fighter with horrendous fashion taste. Allison tells Neil she’ll make the dress only if Neil agrees to let her make a suit for him and if he’ll save the money to get something decent to eat
Neil agrees because while the suit thing might be weird, he’s not about to give up free money
Renee goes and tells Andrew because she thinks he might want to know about the corruption in the nobility
Andrew decides he wants to see this for himself so he decides to lurk around when Lola goes in for a fitting
Neil accompanies Lola because she wants to flaunt her power over him
Andrew sees Neil and is like “ooh pretty boy”
Neil sees Andrew and is Suspicious and kinda recognizes him as one of the princes
Allison sees all this and makes Andrew measure Neil for Neil’s suit
Renee laughs at Andrew’s pain
The “yes or no”s start here, but with Neil flinching away from Andrew when Andrew goes to measure Neil’s torso
Andrew is suspicious and a bit angry at what this might mean, because he saw how the trafficked kids reacted to other people and he know how he reacted the weeks and months after getting kidnapped so he knows something is up
Allison drags out Lola’s fitting as much as she can to give Andrew and Neil time to talk, as well as to give Neil time away from Lola
Andrew tells Neil to meet him in the woods if he wants to get away from his father
Neil is still suspicious but figures it couldn’t hurt, and besides, he’s definitely faster and a better fighter than some prince, right?
Neil and Lola go home and Lola complains to Nathan about how long Allison took, Nathan lets her at Neil
They meet in the woods the next day
Andrew wants to grill Neil when he sees how hurt he is, but Neil doesn’t really want to talk, so they exchange truths
They meet a couple more times like this (the ball isn’t happening for another three weeks because it takes time for this stuff to be planned and organized)
By the second week, the rest of the royal family has noticed and elected Dan to follow Andrew because Aaron and Kevin are both annoyed at Andrew for various reasons
The day Dan follows Andrew is also the day Matt comes with Neil. Matt had followed Neil because he wants to meet this person who is making Neil happy when he isn’t with Matt
Andrew is annoyed and tells Dan to annoy someone else, so she goes and talks with Matt. Matt now wants to go the the ball too
Slowly the foxes come together, and by the week before the ball, the royal cousins have taught the others exy.
Also, as the ball has been approaching, Nathan has swung between ignoring Neil and causing immense amounts of harm
This causes the foxes to rally even more around Neil
The week leading up to the ball, Nathan was scarily calm because the royal guard has lightened up on patrols and so Nathan isn’t as worried about getting caught
Neil tells the Andrew this privately and Andrew makes a note to get Neil away from his father asap
The day of the ball, Nathan and the inner circle go. They make plans to leave at midnight.
Neil isn’t really planning on going still, but Matt shows him the suit Allison had made for him (Allison gave Matt the suit because she didn’t trust Neil not to ruin it before the ball) and Dan had sent them a carriage, so it would be a waste not to go.
They don’t their names called because only the women and distinguished guests get to be announced
Andrew abandons Aaron when he sees Neil
Bee has already given Katelyn her stamp of approval when Katelyn was the first to arrive and she saw how lovesick both Aaron and Katelyn were
When Andrew gets to Neil, Matt leaves him to find Dan
For a solid hour everyone is happily paired off, Renee watching fondly as Allison makes snide remarks on others’ outfits, Aaron and Katelyn dancing, Matt and Dan talking, Neil and Andrew in the gardens. Kevin is talking with the daughter and apprentice of a blacksmith (Thea) and Nicky is pissing his parents off with Erik.
Then, when Neil comes back inside with Andrew, he sees a) the time and b) Nathan
He’s not sure if Nathan’s seen him, but he tells Andrew that he’s got to go, so he runs like the speedy little fucker he is. In his haste, he leaves a shoe, because Renee and Matt annoyingly made him change into bad-for-running shoes because his shoes were too dirty
This makes Renee, Dan, and Allison the Fairy Godmother(s)
Andrew picks up his shoe and decides that when he finds Neil, he’s going to get him shoes that fit better
At home, Neil finds that the inner circle minus Lola is back. They start to beat him up, and when Nathan and Lola get home, they continue to do so. Nathan can’t cripple Neil permanently because everyone would notice, but he does break his leg and slash him up
He’s about to break the other leg when the Foxes break down the door. Kevin, Renee, Dan, and Andrew utterly ruin Nathan, and since they’re royals, they’re untouchable
Nathan and the inner circle go to jail
It turns out Aaron proposed to Katelyn at the ball, so Andrew proposes with the shoe Neil lost. Neil is confused, but elopes with Andrew.
Dan, Allison and Nicky laugh, Renee and Kevin shake their heads for different reasons and then Nicky freaks out because he wanted to throw elaborate weddings for his cousins, but now Andrew has ruined it

My thoughts on “Buddie”
 1. I think if Fox could realize that sometimes you can’t *plan* for chemistry, it just happens, and when it does it’s magic and you need to let it play out, they would be so far ahead of the curve of other shows and fans beyond their core audience would take notice.  The material IS there to defend it actually happening against claims that they just bowed down to the shippers.
2. On the one hand, I believe that the writers are very deliberately writing a lot of subtext and the directors are leaving in scenes where the actors are making certain choices, both Ryan/Oliver and Peter/Kenneth/Aisha/JLH. But is it just as a “shout out” to the Buddie shippers, or an actual deliberate effort to make a point of how close they are and how dependent they’ve become on their relationship?
3. I’ve talked before how I think deciding on your character’s sexuality before you actually write them out for a while just doesn’t make for believable humanity based on reality. If we’re looking at these two examples,
Buck has been written in a way that could very well make him bi/pan and not everybody who is and is secure in their identity will go and talk about it constantly. I would also like to remind everyone that bi does not mean you have to stick to a certain quota, like keep your relationships 50/50 male/female. There are many people who are bi who tend to end up in more relationships/even just sexual ones with one gender, and that doesn’t make them less bi or pan. So just because we have only seen him have female love interests during the show, there are some scenes (”Your man crush on Eddie”/”I’m not setting you up with my brother/Hey Now”) that could be interpreted to mean that might not always have been the case, Maddie being the one who would have been there to witness it. We also see Buck not really caring about the social conventions - not only of who he dates - he is consistently written as meeting every person he meets on eye level - even making sure the guy who stole his identity to catfish women wouldn’t lose his dignity in death, but also romantically, we can see him building a connection with Abby through the phone first and falling in love with her as a person, and not caring about her being quite a lot older.
Eddie, and I’ve written about this before, is a little bit of an enigma. Again, we have only seen him in one relationship, and while it doesn’t seem like it was the happiest of marriages, in the end it really did seem like he loved Shannon and wanted to make it work. Up until Ms. Florez we have also seen him almost making a point of not looking to date (”They’re not my type”/”You didn’t set me up, did you?”), and that is pretty much all we know about him. Again, the fact that he was married to a woman and once flirted with one briefly, does not prove or disprove anything. He grew up in Texas, in latino culture, and spent a good amount of his formative years in the US Army, all of these can traditionally be quite conservative. From personal experience even I have seen many people who grew up in conservative environments fall in line with the expectations set for them by their communities (often very early, and Eddie and Shannon did get married quite young), especially if their community doesn’t provide a lot of LGBTQ-visibility or role models. Yes, Eddie does “act” straight, whatever that means and whether that is an actual concept, but the way he behaves in a lot of scenes with Buck, and I’ll get back to this in point 8., could be interpreted in other ways.
4. TV today has gotten a lot better at showing LGBTQ relationships that aren’t a) just on the sidelines b) serving as collateral emotional damage to drive the plot or c) are written in a way that is basically just taking a hetero-couple-storyline and casting two people of the same gender in it. I am worried that they think they can’t do the “coming out later in life” storyline again with Buddie because they already have Michael (which brings me back to point 1. Let the damn magic happen when it’s right in front of your eyes), and they can’t have another main cast LGBTQ character - or two - because they already have Hen (and Karen). Obviously these are not valid reasons, look at other shows like 911 Lone star for representation within the main cast, but of course, this is a double edged sword because there is a concern that they gave us 911 Lone Star to do what they wouldn’t or couldn’t do with the original. (On a side note, Owen Strand is the fairy godfather of Texas and I live for that show)
5. Parallels. This has been talked about a lot, and there are much better posts about it than this one. But writers aren’t stupid, or careless, so I do believe that to a certain extent they’re aware of how they are setting up parallels between Buck and Eddie’s love lives. We have them agreeing to “have each other’s backs” in contrast to Shannon telling Eddie that he never had hers. We have Eddie telling Buck that there is no one he trusts more with Christopher than him, while he makes it clear that while he thinks he can forgive Shannon, he doesn’t think he can trust her. We had Shannon coming back just as Buck decides to leave Abby behind finally, and we had Ali showing up when Shannon dies, and now Ana when the writers point out how single Buck is.
6. Themes. The episode themes in 9-1-1 are kinda like horoscopes, they’re meant to be able to work for multiple storylines and connect all the main characters through one focus. But we’ve seen a lot of themes surrounding family or trust or love that have an obvious connection to a Buddie moment on the show. Chosen Family. Home. Being able to trust your partner. Seizing the day. And even when it’s something that doesn’t immediately connect the two, the scenes are cut in a way that imply there’s a connection, like Eddie telling Chim to tell Maddie he loves her, because tomorrow isn’t promised. Chim calls Maddie to invite her to dinner to finally do this, and right before this we see Eddie asking Buck to lunch - this is probably just a coincidence, right? But we can be sure that the director, writers and cutters were aware of this, and made the choice to do it this way, for whatever reason. Because this is their exact job, telling stories through how they cut scenes together. 7. Christopher. So this might be what makes Buddie a little more unique compared to the, admittedly, dozens of other seemingly “straight bromances” that people have shipped. Most scenes we get with Buck and Eddie that are outside of work, involve Chris in some way. It’s probably safe to say that part of the reason they became so close is because Buck and Chris have a connection that I would wager goes beyond what most friends have with their single-dad-friend’s kid. We see how important Buck becomes in Christopher’s life, and vice versa, pretty much a few episodes after they meet for the first time. Eddie trusts Buck with Chris’ life, and he trusts him with any problems relating to Christopher that he needs to work through. Buck’s his sounding board for his role as a parent, which is interesting considering Eddie has other friends at the 118 that actually are parents? *cough* Chosen family *cough*
8. Closeness. As I said above, sometimes writers plan one storyline, but the magic happens somewhere they didn’t expect, and if that is the case, and you want to be faithful to your characters, you should seize that opportunity. I think we can all agree this is one of those cases where the chemistry is just off the charts. There are long looks, there is a lot of being in sync, there’s constant physical contact when they’re sitting or walking next to each other. Personal space, who? Again, this is something the director could discourage, or use a take that didn’t have Buck grab his belt buckle and invading Eddie’s personal space in his own kitchen, but they decided on this take. They decided on the take of Eddie clearly checking out Buck’s behind and Chim noticing. Now Buck seems to be pretty comfortable with closeness anyway, but Eddie isn’t the most touchy guy with anyone else, so this is noticeable. And it works.
9. Look. Somebody sat down and wrote “You want to go for the title?” and I would pay a lot of money to see the stage directions on that script because holy fuck. There’s a lot of info in their exchanges - and it implies that there are lots of moments that these two talk that we don’t get to see - Buck immediately knows about Eddie and Ana, and he knew about the situation with Shannon too (and didn’t hide his jealousy very well). When they don’t talk, it clearly gets to Eddie, who doesn’t have that many other people he really trusts and can open up to. Cue “husbands fighting in the supermarket”. But what’s also interesting to me is that their dynamic involves a lot of Eddie teasing Buck. “Exoskeleton” “Aren’t you still in that phase?” “You would have talked me into buying a more expensive one”.. and Eddie sometimes uses it to keep their conversations from getting into dangerous, emotional territory, like during the kitchen scene. And I don’t know about y’all, but that sounds like something I’ve done before when I knew there was something to get into, and I just didn’t know how or when.
_______________________________________
Wow I could keep going but this is already so long. I’m so sorry everyone. But I figured we all now have two weeks so we have time to do a lot of reading 😅Thanks everybody for reminding me about the things that do make it seem like Buddie is an actual possibility, because most of the time, I have to admit, I’m like 70/30 against the hope of it becoming reality. Long live fanfiction! In conclusion, please make it happen, or explain all the choices you have made. YOU CAN’T!

Essays in Existentialism: Atlantis 6
Tumblr media
Previously on Atlantis
The moment she woke, Clarke kept her eyes closed and just listened, realizing that things were not what she’d expected. She felt the familiar weight of her blankets, and she smelled the smell of her parent’s house, the smell as old as time, that she often never noticed, but after being removed for so long, inhaled greedily as she dug her face in her pillow.
There were noises downstairs that finally registered before she opened her eyes, held her breath, and hid in the pillows. She heard some clamor of her parents making breakfast, coffee steam sifting up through the vents. She heard the squeak and chatter of some birds in the trees outside her window. For a moment, Clarke pretended that she was miles underwater, and there might be a beautiful girl awkwardly standing outside her door.
But there wasn’t, and there wouldn’t be. Clarke rolled to her back and stared at the ceiling before digging the heel of her hands into her eyes and sighing. A day ago, she was in a beautiful palace, and now she was back at her parent’s house, without a job, without a career, without a mentor, without any idea of what was to come forward.
Her body was completely healed, a feat that was mind-blowing considering her wounds and condition after the explosion and being stranded at sea. But now, when it was quiet, and she was safe in the familiar, Clarke realized the massive grief heaped upon her, that surviving came at a cost.
When it got to be too much, when she cried silent tears that covered her face and left her chest fluttering and aching, Clarke wiped her face and took a few deep breaths, hoping to find some sort of center amidst the flood of absolute pain that washed over her entire body. She wanted to take another sleeping pill and pass out until her heart didn’t hurt anymore, but that seemed unwise.
As soon as she made it down the stairs and stepped into the kitchen, Clarke realized she’d made a horrible mistake and should have stayed in bed.
“Clarke! Oh my God!”
“We were--”
“I’m so glad you’re--”
“You look!”
The chorus of voices erupted and she took a step back, confused and overwhelmed by the outpouring of her closest friends as they began to circle and reach out and smother.
“Okay, okay, back up everyone,” Abby jumped in carefully, keeping the horde from her terror-stricken daughter. “Give her a moment to breathe. I’m sure she’s not used to being around people, they had her in isolation due to exposure during the explosion.”
“But luckily, she didn’t come in contact with any of the pathogens she was studying,” Jake smiled graciously behind the island as he added more pancakes to the pile forming on the large breakfast display. “Better safe than sorry though.”
“You should have seen your mom. I think she nearly got arrested for trying to break into a government installation,” Raven offered with a smile as Abby hit her shoulder.
“Come sit,” Octavia hurried, clearing more of a path. “You must be hungry.”
“Not really,” Clarke smiled softly and took the seat anyway.
The friends shared a look as Clarke sat there and looked at the display of everyone trying to be normal. Abby hovered, rubbing her daughter’s back, soothing away the worries that remained. No one knew about the ten minutes ago, where she broke down and clawed at her chest in her bed. No one.
“Your appetite will come back,” her mother promised. “Let me make you a little plate. Everyone can dig in. Your friends have been anxiously waiting to see you.”
The general hubbub of people moving about the kitchen really only settled well after Clarke had a plate set in front of her. She ate a blueberry and nodded, smiling at her mother to tell her not to worry. It felt like before, like how it always was, since middle school, the whole gang fighting over this and that, piling over each other to eat. Even when college and life took them different ways, they were never far off. There was something grounding in it, just like her sheets, just like the noises of the morning.
“So what happened, Clarke? We only heard bits and pieces on the news,” Raven explained between mouthfuls of Jake’s famous pancakes. “They kept repeating the same things, over and over again.”
“What did they say?”
Clarke already knew the story. She’d been held in a government facility for six hours and briefed on how to behave and what to say. She had a business card with FBI on it and Agent Barne’s number hidden in her sock drawer.
“Just that a bad storm led to the ship sinking. I can’t imagine how bad it must have been,” Octavia shook her head. “At first they said no survivors. We all thought you were dead for seventeen hours.”
“I’m… I’m…” Clarke furrowed and shook her head, looking guiltily at her food, afraid to meet their eyes. “I’m so sorry.”
“But you’re not,” Bellamy interrupted. “And you don’t have to talk about what happened.”
A pointed look was exchanged between him and the rest, warning them to behave and not push.
“There isn’t much to tell,” she shrugged, perking up a bit and deciding to pick up her fork. “The storm was bad, and then I woke up in a government hospital. I wish there was a better story. I was checking weather reports in the navigation center, and I think we hit a wave or gust and I must have hit my head and blacked out.”
“It’s not every day that a concussion is a blessing,” Jake offered, finally taking his seat with the rest. “But it must have saved you.”
“A blessing,” Clarke repeated, contemplating the word for a moment before taking a big bite of breakfast. “Like these pancakes. I feel better already.”
The group chuckled and refused to talk about the accident again, while Clarke ate and smiled until she couldn’t any longer. She explained that she was still a little drowsy, and wanted to lay down. Every person promised to be back and see her again, demanding that she call if she needed anything at all. With grateful and long and tight hugs, her lifelong friends filed out as Clarke slipped upstairs.
It truly was exhausting, to finally think about it, to remember the storm and her colleagues and all of the people who died. The numbness-- that was the true blessing of Atlantis. There wasn’t time to grieve when her body was overloaded with stimuli, unlike now, where everything was mundane and allowed her to think.
Clarke slipped into her childhood bed again, and she pulled the blanket over her head, rolling into herself tightly before drifting off to an uneasy sleep.
XXXXXXXXXX
For about a full week, Clarke existed in a fairly mundane routine of recover that all at once suited her and drove her nuts. Simultaneously, she felt prepared to do something-- anything-- and yet, could not imagine doing anything other than nothing. Her body and mind and soul needed time to come back, and she knew it. It didn’t make it any easier for her to stomach, but she begrudgingly listened.
Every morning she got up and had a special breakfast her father made, even though her appetite was minimal and favored banalities. And then she would take a walk, sometimes with a friend, sometimes alone before coming home to shower and read or watch tv before a nap. Usually someone came by in the afternoon before dinner to occupy her, keep her busy, keep her doing something. Then came a family dinner, every night, her mother arriving right on time to join them. Dinner led to a movie, which then led to sleep.
It was a safe and easy schedule in which she didn’t talk about anything with anyone.
Until the arrival of the invitations for the funerals for the people finally confirmed dead after the concluded investigation into the crash and retrieval of bodies from the water, an initiative led by the Atlanteans as a gesture of good faith.
Two weeks after her return, Clarke found her schedule consisting of funerals, nearly every day, each more difficult than the last, but as the final crewmember standing, as the only representative of her research team, she sat there at each and remembered with everyone else, commiserating in their grief. It helped and hurt, as any cathartic thing is meant to do.
The third week she returned somewhat to her normal schedule with an intermittent funeral, the last residual ones ending quickly.
A month after her return, Clarke felt marginally normal, except that she had no idea what the future held.
It took five weeks for her to schedule an appointment with the university, despite her mother and father telling her she could take more time.
Only after six weeks, did Clarke allow herself to really think about her time in Atlantis. Most of the time, she found herself daydreaming about Lexa in some form because it was one of the few thoughts that made her feel unburdened and less heavy in her chest. But, she actively kept herself from thinking too much, often shaking away the thoughts when her mind began to drift.
After the nightly movie, and after she excused herself to sleep, Clarke sat at her desk and look at her laptop, knowing full well what was about to happen. She moved to lift the lid and then stopped, closing it and drumming her fingers along the top before looking over her shoulder at her closed door, straining her ears to hear anything.
Though it was quiet, she hurried to place an old sweatshirt near the bottom of her door to block out any light, listening again, closer to the hall, at the familiar noises of her parents getting ready to go to sleep.
Satisfied that no one would see her, Clarke ripped open her laptop, and quietly as she could type, logged in and began to type her query.

A-L-E-X-A-N
Backspace.
P-R-I-N-C-E-S-S O-F A-T-L-A-N-T-I-S

In the dark room, the glow of the screen colored her face, but she didn’t care. She bit her lip and looked at the photos first, and upon not finding many, looked through the first few search results. Little was known about Atlantis, let alone the heir to the throne, and any pictures that existed were not good.
Mildly disappointed, Clarke slumped back in her chair and toyed with the scroll, debating what to do with no information and how deep, exactly, she was willing to dive into conspiracy theories and doctored photos.
Backspace.
A-Q-U-A-G-I-R-L
Enter.
Clarke paused only to look back at her door and close her laptop slightly, though not all the way, when she heard a sound in the hall. She held her breath and waited for her parents to go to bed before opening it fully again.
There were more search results for that name, and Clarke mildly regretted it, because the images of Lexa, in a skin-tight suit, with a weapon, was a little disorienting. And then she stood beside her father, who was, even though it was an understatement, an actual mountain of a human. Lexa had his eyes, his chin, his grin, and goodness, did she have a similar fitness regime.
Slowly making her way through the gallery, Clarke smiled to herself when she thought about Lexa, shy and with red-tipped ears, kind and gentle and soft to her for no reason at all. And then she looked at Lexa’s biceps.
“Fuck,” Clarke sighed and shook her head.
Backspace.

Clarke hesitated before smiling to herself.

The meeting at the university didn’t turn up much good news, as the semester was just ending and the summer was approaching. With an epic catastrophe to handle and fix, the powers behind all decisions, didn’t have any answers other than to enroll Clarke the following semester to finish her degree requirements.
It was fair and just and gave Clarke time to recover and get back into thinking about existing again. Of course, Clarke found anything reasonable to be exhausting, in and of itself, and so she hated having to wait, hated losing her research, hated everything about everything that left her stuck.
Three days later, however, she found herself back at the Spindrift, unsure of why she was there, and marvelling at how it operated when it was opened. People were buzzing about, familiar with their duties, as if it hadn’t opened merely two months prior.
“It’s nice to see you again, Agent Barnes,” Clarke smiled, shaking the agents hand as she approached the waiting area.
“Thanks for coming down.”
“I don’t think I had a choice.”
Clarke looked over her shoulder at the two men that picked her up for her ‘appointment.’ When she looked back, the agent was not amused.
“You are being formally offered a position here, at the Spindrift.”
“I might formally ask why?” she furrowed and looked at the blue folder that was handed to her, complete with the seal of Atlantis on it. “I’m still in my degree program for the Masters, and haven’t decided to complete the doctorate…. Is this salary serious?”
“Government salaries are never a laughing matter.”
“I could make three times this in the private sector.”
“Yes,” the agent nodded. “And you would never work with any Atlantean healers or products ever again.”
“Why me?”
The agent opened another folder she was carrying.
“You searched Atlantis comma Princess Lexa six times,” Barnes read from the folder, dragging her finger along the words there. “And Biceps comma Aquagirl, approximately a dozen.”
The manilla folder shut quickly.
“Per the queen herself, in conjunction with your university and the United States government, you are being offered a position at the Spindrift for research in intercontinental knowledge sharing.”
Clarke furrowed and shook her head, not sure of what she was following entirely. There was certainly some mortification in there, she knew that, felt it eating her alive in front of the agent with an inability to change her inflection at all.
“I find this idea the best case scenario, and you to be a complete risk to yourself and the sanctity of Atlantis,” the agent muttered, tossing the folder on the table. “Accept it so that I can watch you behave yourself and stop doing searches online of a reclusive and dangerous foreign entity that only you have visited.”
“You… you-- you hacked my computer?”
“You are an intern and only living non-Atlantean who has been to Atlantis, of course your government is watching you.”
“But why? I don’t know anything.”
“You know enough.”
“Who else has seen this?” Clarke blushed, though she attempted to hide it as best she could. There surely was no surviving this level of mortification.
“No one.”
“Was my offer made because of-- because I know--” she paused and took a breath. “Who did this?”
“This offer was asked for by the Queen herself on behalf of one of her greatest medical researcher. Apparently you are the only person this researcher could tolerate.”
That feisty old broad, Clarke thought to herself as she shook her head.
“How is… um, how-- How is the-- uh-- How is Aquaman? I heard about a battle before--”
“You have seventy-two hours to think about this. I will only ever communicate with you regarding official matters in this office, and anything relating to activities done by Atlantean royal family are unofficial until commented upon by official state representatives.”
“You sound like a blast at parties.”
The agent didn’t move at all at the comment.
“I’m sorry,” Clarke apologized. “That was rude. You are just so-- intense.”
“I’ve worked fifteen years with the King to make this a reality. If I wasn’t intense, it would be for nothing.”
“Can I ask about, um, the Prin-- about Lexa?”
“Officially, no.”
“Unofficially?”
“Unofficially, no.”
“But you just set it up like you would say something unofficial.”
“I cannot control any inferences made.”
With growing frustration, both at the agent and herself, Clarke pursed her lips and looked down at the seal on the folder. It was something, and some sort of direction in a time when she very badly needed it.
“Unofficially,” the agent finally started, lowering her voice. “Just save the pictures. Why would you keep searching the same thing?”
“After a brief, embarrassed pause, Clarke nodded and looked back at the agent.
“I’ll look this over and get back to you. Unofficially or officially or whatever, thank the Queen, if you see her.”
The agent nodded instead of arguing, nudging her head slightly so the agents would continue to escort the scientist back toward the entrance.
XXXXXXXXXX
Three months after her shipwreck and rescue to an untouched land, hidden in the depths of the sea by a beautiful princess with a mythical bloodline and inheritance in the shape of a trident, Clarke sat at her desk in a very small cubicle, in a very small office, with six other research associates.
It was a very tedious job for the first few weeks, and just on the horizon was the actual research that Clarke hoped would lead to figuring out what the healer did to heal her so quickly, and if she could figure out how to help other people.
There was an element of escapism to worke each day, enough that Clarke found herself staying late to avoid her worried family’s glances and the mothering that all of her friends did. It was appreciated but also extremely stifling for someone who was stubborn and willingly admitted it.
“You heading out soon?” Wells asked as he shouldered his bag and looked over the cubicle wall to see Clarke’s small desk, covered with pictures of Atlantean books.
“Yeah, in a bit,” Clarke nodded, not looking up from the notebook she was writing something down quickly.
“I could wait around and we could go grab dinner. There’s this great place in town. Only like fifteen minutes from the main gate.”
“I’m not sure how long a bit is going to be. I want to finish looking at this property sheet before we get samples next week.”
Kind and bright, Wells was a soft-spoken doctoral student with a knack for keeping an eye on Clarke without being overbearing. Always firmly pressed in his khakis and tucked primly with his button downs, he hid behind thick-rimmed glasses, but ran marathons. He wasn’t overwhelming in the eye he kept on his co-worked. Sometimes, Clarke thought he might even fancy her a little bit.
When Wells didn’t say anything, Clarke looked up and offered a smile as he debated the next step for the evening.
“Get out of here,” Clarke told him. “I won’t be too much longer, and some quiet will help me.”
“If you’re sure.”
“I’ll see you on Monday.”
“Have a good weekend.”
Clarke watched him nod and returned to her work, doing her best to transcribe an ancient language with limited training and the most basic knowledge of what some of the ancient plants used. She felt like an archaeologist, investigating something she would never truly understand, and yet she’d been there. She’d heard the words spoken.
The ‘little bit’ she mentioned gradually turned into a while, and the evening settled outside on the water, calming it until the waves were nearly non-existent. There was still a fading light outside when Clarke closed her notebook and shut her laptop for the evening, and it only truly disappeared after she shouldered her bag and shoved in a few folders to work on over the weekend.
With a final look around the office, Clarke nodded and made her way to the door, preparing for two long days of her parents making sure she was alright. She needed her own place, and enough space to stop thinking about--
“Lexa?”
The same smile, the same caught look in her eyes, the same stance, the same eyes-- the entire package looked back at Clarke expectantly. Gone were the formal Atlantean clothes, and in their place was simple jeans and an old sailor’s sweater, a shoulder lovingly patched by expert hands. Gone were the intricate braids and armor, and instead a wild mane perched itself atop Lexa’s head, blown about by the wind and her hands in equal measure.
“You’re here late.”
“You’re here.”
“You said you’d be close.”
Without meaning to, Clarke took a step forward before catching herself. Lexa tucked her arms behind her back, ever vigilant to remain proper and royal.
“Have you eaten?” Clarke finally broke the quiet.
“You were my first stop after my grandfather’s. I don’t know my way around land that well.”
“I’m honored.”
“Care to show me around?”
The question came with a grin, and Lexa extended her elbow willingly, waiting for Clarke to take it again as she hadn in the Hanging Gardens. That was all she needed, to remember that it hadn’t been a dream, that three days, three months ago happened.
There really wasn’t a question to it at all.
Clarke nodded, smiled, and took the arm offered to her, and whatever else would come attached.

hi there! loving your "Buck is Eddie's love interest" gif series with the tropes. Wondering if you might also have an "Eddie as Buck's love interest" set planned? I think you have a great eye for finding and exemplifying the tropes at work in the narrative. thanks!
Thank you so much! I do have something in the works atm, though I still need to go back through Season 1 to get a better grasp on Buck and Abby moments that would best illustrate the points I hope to make. Buck is a bit of a harder one to map for the main reason that his arc isn’t nearly as clearly mapped out and resolved as Eddie’s (arguably) is. It doesn’t help that we don’t have a Buck Begins or much of anything on his past. But I think there’s definitely enough scenes and moments to work with. I just have to find the time to put it together. :)
Some thoughts under the cut because I love these boys and may as well ramble a bit at the opportunity?
-
I think the most obvious thing pointing to Eddie being Buck’s love interest is the way their arcs complement each other. In the series, one of Buck’s most well established fears is his fear of abandonment. It's hinted at from the first episode but especially driven home in season 3 (in 3x16, for example). And it’s really remarkable considering that Eddie was introduced as a character who is known for abandoning those who needed him. Eddie’s entire life and marriage collapsed because he kept running away, and he’s shown as someone who is deeply aware of the damage he did, and trying to make up for his past and to move on and grow as a person. And even at the first level, these two arcs match perfectly, as for Eddie to develop and mature, he has to learn to demonstrate  courage and commitment to those important to him. And in turn, for Buck to grow, he has to learn to recognise his own value and worth to others, and he needs to see that others are willing to stand beside him when things get tough.
It’s what it made it so significant when the show chose for Eddie to be the one to drag Buck out of his post-injury slump. Because at this point Buck is at his most vulnerable, and it is the moment that would justify any other characters drifting apart. But Eddie is shown to consciously make that effort. A character who used to run away the moment things got too hard was the one who went and showed Buck that he still stood beside him, that Buck still had a friend in Eddie (and Christopher), and that he wasn’t being left behind. And it’s such a beautiful progression for both of their arcs.
-
Another more obvious sign of course is the fact that Buck thinks he has nothing in his life aside from his job. It’s in part what drives his character angst for the entirety of season 3, all the while he is slotted into every possible scene with Eddie to show the viewer that he’s actually already part of Eddie’s family whether he believes it or not. And again, this so perfectly echoes Eddie’s own search for a co-parent and his desire to complete his family again. From the start of season 2, it’s Eddie’s aunt who remarks to Buck how Eddie struggles being alone, and in that same episode, Buck shows himself as the answer to that loneliness.
For the two seasons, the writers have only built up this family unit more and more. It’s why so many fans found it ridiculous that Buck didn’t say yes when Eddie invited him to Christopher’s sleepover. Buck has more than his job, he isn’t alone, he has Eddie and Christopher. The show has set it all up perfectly, and all that’s left is for Buck to realise that fact for himself.
-
911 has a habit of using failed love interests to reflect the fears and flaws of the male heroes. The thing that strikes me about Shannon and Eddie, and the way that relationship developed and resolved, was that Eddie wasn’t ever going to escape the mistakes he made as Eddie 1.0. With Shannon, he would always have been a husband who ran away from his struggling wife and young child when they needed them most. And in turn, Shannon also ran away, and wallowed in guilt for years. The trust they had between them was so mangled and broken, they may never have been able to truly move on, with the shadow of their past decisions hanging over them. And at the end of it all, Eddie was left feeling inadequate, not good enough, suffering still from the consequences of Eddie 1.0
Buck and Abby, in turn, echoes this to a certain extent that was really only established/acknowledged in 3x18. With Abby, Buck entered into the relationship as Buck 1.0. And no matter how happy they are, how much Buck grows, he will always be haunted by the man he used to be. And this is in turn what Abby hints at and reflects when she properly broke things off with Buck in the s3 finale. With Buck, Abby will always be afraid of falling back into the person she used to be, the person she was not proud of being. And by extension, Buck carried that same stigma with him, the fear and danger of falling back into Buck 1.0, or worse, of not fully maturing into his properly-realised self, because of how eager he is to not fall back and do the wrong thing again. Abby knew him first as who he used to be, and unless they leave each other behind, that history can always come back to haunt them again.
And Eddie, being introduced when he was, only ever knew Buck 2.0 - someone who was devoted, loving, endlessly caring for others. And in turn, Buck has only ever known Eddie 2.0 - a responsible and loving father who fought for the people he loved no matter what. It’s telling, in a sense, that they put Eddie’s mistakes in his past, instead of letting it unfold in real time. He could just as easily have been a character who abandoned his wife and child in El Paso and moved to LA to ‘pay the bills’. But he isn’t Eddie 1.0, he’s Eddie 2.0. Buck and Eddie are set up to meet each other right at the cusp of each other’s fresh starts.
And that’s what the lawsuit conflict really drives home in terms of development, is that it’s the first time Eddie and Buck truly glimpsed each others flaws, and the echoes of their 1.0 selves, in a way that hurt each other. Eddie saw a Buck who acted (out of pain, but still) selfishly without regard for how his actions affected and hurt others. And in turn, Buck saw Eddie who turned to avoidance to an extent that it hurt another (and toward violence, but that’s a whole other thing to unpack).
Then, they reconciled. They saw those ugly parts of each other, they saw those flaws, those imperfections, and they told each other - hey, I forgive you. I care about you. I believe in you.
-
And all of these things... that’s where this pairing comes from. They have grown as people, and you see them both toward the end of that growth, seeing how far they’ve both come. You have Buck who is desperate for family, for connection, for someone to love. And in turn, Eddie is someone who is desperate to be loved, to have someone see him as who he is beyond the mistakes he’s made, and to be enough.
And, well, they complete each other.

TRIGGERS: divorce, mentions of crime, drug and alcohol use
the youngest child of ted and elaine mccarrick, wes was a kid who is full of life. she’s the kind of kid who did things to make you smile, and it usually worked. she was warm and inviting, a little naive, but she had a strong support system.
her parents divorce when she’s six, she doesn’t quite understand it but her dad moves out, and her grandma and multiple cousins move in. it’s a lively household, between her mom, who works as a nurse, and her siblings, and her cousins, it was never really quiet and there was never a lot of room.
despite the split, her parents maintain that their children have a relationship with both of them, and truthfully, wes is a daddy’s girl. she and her dad were cut from the same cloth, happy go lucky, fun loving, a bit silly, he’s the one who introduces her to movies. it’s their thing, watching and critiquing them together, and it’s not whatever is in theatres either. they went for all times of filmmaking, new wave, surrealist, and more.
it really stuck with wes, who herself had begun making movies, mostly horror/fantasy/scifi stuff with her friends-- she writes and directs and occasionally, she’ll don a costume and star in them. they’re silly little things, but her family always sat down for her “premieres.”
her formative years are marked with plenty of things, sports, deaths of distant family members, a cousin or two who gets caught in the wrong crowd and ends up in jail, and throughout this, wes remains a rock for her family.
she’s in high school, and she gets into the eclectic crowd, the outcasts, the weirdos, the ones who smoked under the bridge, and partied out in an abandoned trailer near the desert. these freaks were her freaks. they accepted her with open arms, as she them.
she chooses thales because she always wants to see the east coast, and frankly, as much as she loves her family, she wants to be free of them. and they have a fantastic film program. so!
she meets steven in their first film class together, and they’re fast friends, despite her usual weariness of YET another film bro, steven proves to be a good egg. so she thinks. she finds out through him talking that he might not be the most faithful to his girlfriend, and as much as she doesn’t like meddling, she thinks it’s only right to let clarissa, who she doesn’t really know well, know. however, before there’s a chance, everything happens-- now she’s stuck wondering if she should reveal the truth, or let sleeping dogs lie.
nana is different, nana and her dated her sophomore year, nana’s freshman year. it wasn’t serious. but they were fond of each other. they eventually break up, but they stay friendly, waving to each other in the halls, chatting at parties.
both the disappearance and the murder is weird for wes, who by all accounts, isn’t great at dealing with bad shit. she prefers to laugh about things. laugh about everything. because if she doesn’t laugh, she’ll cry.
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘
wes is a mess, a free-spirit, a walking contradiction. she’s very independent minded, the kind of person who does things without thinking so much about the consequences, this leads her into trouble sometimes. like nicking something from a convenience store, or stealing a stop sign as a prank. she’s definitely the kind to goof off and not exactly dedicate her full attention to something. and while she’s in genuinely good spirits on most occasions, she has a staunch ‘no asshole’ policy. the type to defend the underdogs, and go after bullies. she’ll punch you with a smile on her face, and yet it ends up being more unnerving than you realize. she’s a bit of a ditz, as well, never the best at school, but can talk your ear off about the going ons of the world. she’s a lovable dumbass, for sure, and loyal to a tee once you get her as a friend.
𝐓𝐈𝐃𝐁𝐈𝐓𝐒
horror movie fan! her favorites are some of the oldies, like dracula and  the bride of frankenstein! and some new ones! big fan of jordan peele’s work, as well as ari aster’s! but mostly really advocates for women directors and directors of color!
also does roller derby! she picked this up her first year at thales and fell in love with it, i can’t think of a name for her yet, but she’s a blocker, won’t hesitate to elbow some dick at the bar
kinda a tomboy? she’s always been! she’s rough and tumble and not afraid to get down and dirty with someone, i.e. will join those football games on the quad or crawl through the mud for a scene to shoot
doesn’t know if she wants to be a director/writer or a cinematographer honestly.... she loves the technical aspects of film as much as the making the stories
definition of a bruh girl, says it a whole lot, but also just if you tell her you love her, she’ll just roll her eyes and be like you’re an idiot (which means she loves you too) she’ll be affectionate if she’s close to you
kinda a wh*re oops....... texts multiple girls at a time and doesn’t want to hurt any of their feelings she doesn’t know how she keeps ending up in these situations... also a bisexual disaster
a stoner as well..... always has a massive jar of weed
unclear whether she lives on campus or off campus but if she does live off campus she has a pet turtle named elsa lanchester after the bride of frankenstein actress
a drummer! she’s in a band (name tbd) she started drumming at a young age and found it was a good way to manage her aggression
doesn’t really do well with emotions, so she’ll either be like there, there, or try to make jokes.... she really said kids can you lighten up
walking meme... such a walking meme... doesn’t know so many things she’s like a cute puppy with no thoughts head empty but she’s so fun to be around
life of the party.... nana she came fr ur spot and she took it and she’s not sorry but she does miss u a lot
doesn’t rly feel like she’s allowed to be upset anyways bc some people have it...... way worse.... can u say Imposter syndrome
kind of an enabler...... will be that person to push u to try things but not in a peer pressurey way, more like if u are unsure abt sending a text she says do it
wears fun earrings and socks! think lollipops or gummy bears or found objects like she collects that shit it’s her lifeline
boxes! she’s been boxing since she was abt 12, courtesy of her older brother (who is now a doctor thx ruby) and it’s a good way to exercise and release stress
𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒
best friend -- two of a feather, cut from the same cloth, or complete opposites it doesnt matter to her (the abbi to her ilana)
roller derby friends -- she’s p close to the team, margs on her
makeup artist pal -- i think it would be neat fr someone to try and teach her makeup whether its normal or sfx bc she wants to look like a monster or smthn
she’s gullible, u take advantage of that -- u just tell her lies p much and she’s like yeah ok that sounds right
party friends
classmates
fwbs (f/m/nb) -- tbh she might have one or two of these but they literally are the def of pals who bone sometimes... like v good abt being like you good? u dont want more? cool me too
exes (f/m/nb) -- mostly dated women or nb people but def cld have had a guy
she smokes you out -- p much the only reason u hang out w her is bc she has good weed
someone she’s fought -- like fully decked in the face, prob said something that rubbed her the wrong way and it just devolved from there
people who dislike her -- she could definitely be seen as annoying bc shes loud and dorky and funny so ??
breaks someone out of their shell -- p self explanatory, pushes them to have fun, w everything happening shes rly like lifes too short to not take the opportunities around u
cousins! probably on her dad’s side! i figure she has some east coast fam

My servant Devil - Session 2
Lucian and Abigail walk to the town together to get some shopping done. They visit multiple shops, buy dresses, shoes and matching gloves - until then the mark on Abigail’s hand is covered by a ribbon. Along the way back, Abigail is addressed by a young stranger.
"Abby? Is that really you?“ The voice belongs to a young man, dressed in smart-looking probably expensive suit. He has chestnut coloured hair and brown eyes. He’s only half a head taller than Abigail, who’s very short. The moment Abigail turns around, he hugs her and attempts to spin her around, which is not a good idea because he can't really lift her up and just stumbles backwards and probably would have fallen over. Abigail notices for a flash of a moment Lucian appearing behind him and steadying him before he puts her back down.
When he places her back down, there are tears shimmering in his eyes: “Oh Abby! I am so glad you are here and alive! I heard the rumours and I thought... well I thought…”
During a little chat, Abigail finds out that she has been gone for two months, this is the person who stopped by in the morning. She lies about what happened to her parents and the rest of her servants, saying that they’re in America and she just returned early. They agree to meet again later for tea.
Upon return to the mansion, Abigail visits her father’s large office. Sad, cold and empty. Nonetheless Abigail has respect before it. Remembering moments from her childhood when she runs her fingers over beautifully decorated desk. She finds papers with logos of her father’s company - Maglocke’s finest teas, and a key however no keyhole for it. She decides to keep it. After exploring the office, which is now hers, it’s time to have tea with Oliver Whitlocke.
Abigail meets him in the tea room of the mansion. Oliver is impressed by her new dress, Lucian’s cooking abilities and… does he blush when Lucian is around?
“Tell me everything about America! Are the buildings there really so tall that you cannot see the sky? And do the people really all talk in this funny accent?” Oliver asks enthusiastically. Abigail remembers her prior conversation with Lucian and based on his advice she decides to tell Oliver the truth. Well almost. She tells him about the ship being attacked and sunk by some criminals, about her parents’ death and her memory loss.
He freezes: ”You... you forgot about me? If you're joking this is really not funny.” Abigail confirms. “Uhm... so you really don't know who I am? Nothing? I am... we are well… I'm your fiancé” he replies after few stutters. Apparently, she and Oliver grew up together, their families were very close. Their marriage was arranged when they were just children. “That... that doesn't mean I don't like you or anything! I like you, you are my best friend in the world, Abby,” he says with a smile. Best friend in the world, huh? After that they wrap up the conversation and Oliver leaves the mansion.
Abigail stays in the tea room, just sadly sitting there, trying to process everything. Admitting out loud what happened makes it all so real… and now this. She has a fiancée. Eventually Lucian prepares dinner for her, cooking far too many courses again.
“You don't have to cook that much, I can't eat all of that alone!”
“But I don't know which dishes my lady likes best,” he explains dishearten and watches her eat curiously, carefully watching her reaction on each dish. Abigail eventually makes a compromise with him to only cook three dishes for one meal. During dinner discussion Abigail learns that Lucian is an immortal being, entertains himself by watching humans, closing pacts with them, helping them in exchange for their souls, which he then devours.
Next morning, Abigail is once again woken up by sun rays and smell of tea, Lucian standing next to her bed already. Lucian helps her get dressed and ready for the day, serving breakfast in the dinning hall. Abigail also receives a letter - invitation to tea from Her Majesty Queen. Addressed to Abigail. Not her parents. How does she know that she’s back home? What could she want?
Most of the day, they spend by Lucian teaching Abigail manners and how to behave at the court in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Victoria. Abigail feels like she has done this before, she knew all of this… at some point.
Time flies by quickly and Abigail has to prepare to meet the Queen. She attempts to take a bath and wash herself but although she perfectly well knows what to do from matching her maids do it so many times before, her hands are clumsy and instead she just gets soap in her eyes, creates bruise on her forehead and yields no good result. Eventually, she gives up and defeated calls Lucian to help her wash her, ordering him to do so without looking. He washes her body carefully, trying to not look. His hands are soothing and pleasantly warm without the gloves. There is a mark engraved on the back of his hand, same as the one on Abigail’s.
Once Abigail is all ready and good to go, they depart, riding in a carriage to the city. The landscape changes very soon from fields to the grey London streets. The carriage stops in front of the golden gates of the palace.
Abigail is led through the palace to the tea room, Lucian following her. There a woman with grey hair sits on the chair, enjoying her cup of tea, but despite the colour of her hair she still looks very royal and full of a strong aura. She gives Abigail smile, offers her condolences and a seat. Queen seems to know everything and immediately recognises Lucian, very unhappy about his presence. Soon, she moves on to Abigail’s fathers business. Apparently, dealing with tea was only a hobby, or rather a coverup. Since ancient times the family Maglocke has been holding a special mission, working for the Crown. They have been the keepers of the secrets of the magical world. Abigail learns that magic is very real and it is living in the shadows and the sewers of London and the whole world. It is her family’s and now her job to make sure it doesn't interfere with the lives of the casual people. Her father travelled so much around the whole world, dealing with problems caused by magic. Making peace between both realms, being mediators of the two worlds. That was also the reason of the journey to America. Abigail is then given a letter, first mission. Abigail is released and leaves the palace, but only after she has learnt about the ability to telepathically communicate with Lucian, presumably due to their pact.
Back in the carriage Abigail reads the letter which talks about boy running around, causing troubles in Camden and there’s also a list of witnesses. They travel to Camden and talk to few people. They are very mistrustful and don’t believe that such a young little fragile girl could possibly do anything to help. And neither does Abby.
With a lot of persuasion Abigail learns that he’s been going through bins, looking for food, stole laundry, walks around at night. Some describe his as a little boy, a poor child, others talk about a dangerous beast which might kill a person soon.
Abigail sends Lucian to get some food while she finds an abandoned house to set out a trap - preparing a trail of food to lure the boy/beast in, see what it actually is, possibly capture him.

Chapter 13: The Ascension Ceremony
In the main square of Polis, the crowd is already waiting for the arrival of their new Heda. Everyone is standing in front of a large platform built for the occasion. On the platform, there are 13 chairs, one for each member of the Coalition, placed on the right and on the left of the Commander's throne. They're positioned in a wide semicircle, and the leaders are already sat in their places, waiting for Aden to make his way up. Actually, all the leaders except for Marcus Kane. Technically, he’s the one supposed to represent Skaikru, but both him and Abby have decided to let Clarke take his place for the occasion. They thought Aden could use the support of a friend during the ceremony.
Since Clarke was with Aden when Titus came for him, she didn't have time to precede him to the main square. So, pushing her way through the crowd, Clarke manages to reach the platform just before Aden does, gaining a suspicious look from everyone as she takes her seat. Thankfully, though, Aden climbing up the platform brings everyone’s attention back on him, and no one makes comments about her being late. As soon as Aden is standing in front of them, all the leaders move from their seats to kneel down before their commander. At that Aden responds with a small bow of his head, which counts both as greeting and as permission for them to get back up. When everyone is back on their feet, Aden turns around to face the crowd, who is clapping and cheering for him.
It’s time for his ascension speech. The boy does his best to look stoic, but Clarke can tell he’s quite nervous. Taking a deep breath, Aden raises his hand to ask for attention. As soon as the square grows quiet, he begins. "People of the 13 clans, it is an honor for me to be standing here as your new Commander. I feel even more honored to be given the chance to continue what Lexa has started. She was by far the greatest leader we've ever had. I think we can all agree on that. Lexa kom Trikru was a visionary: she believed traditions are important, but she also wasn’t afraid of changing them for a greater good. During her time as Commander she managed to unify all of us under one Coalition. Enemies became allies, and together we became stronger. Lexa was wise, compassionate, strong, and she wasn’t afraid of making the hard decisions. I can't promise to be an equally great leader, but everything I know about leadership I've learned from her. And I do promise you that I will do all my best to rule as smartly as she has." As the crowd cheers, Aden pauses and turns to look at Clarke with a smile on his face. Clarke doesn't understand the meaning of that smile until he continues.
"Wisdom, compassion, and strength. These are the three pillars of being a commander. That's what every Natblida is taught during their training to become Heda. But there’s one more pillar Lexa taught us by her example: that of love. Our oldest traditions say that to be Commander is to be alone, but that’s not true.” No one makes a noise this time when he pauses. They're listening carefully to see where he's going with this.
“We are just kids when we're taken away from our families. Our lives, our friends, our homes. All of that is left behind, and we're left with nothing but ourselves when we get here in Polis. The tower becomes our new home then. The Commander and Fleimkipa become our guides. Somewhat like our parents. The other Nightbloods become our family and friends. That love is what keeps us going, what gives us the strength to live away from our dear ones, and what makes us work hard to be ready to take command one day. A Natblida is never alone, and neither should be a Heda.” This time light murmurs fill the crowd, and Aden needs to raise his hand to have everyone’s attention again.
“I know you must be wondering why I’m telling you all this. It's simple, really. As your new Commander, my first action is to change those traditions. From now on, love is going to be the first pillar of being a commander, and leaders will no longer be judged unfit to command just because they've opened their hearts to another person. A commander who wants to marry will be allowed to do that. Because no one can be a good leader without knowing the notion of love. Do you know why Lexa was so much better than any other leader before her? Because she understood love is not weakness, and she loved her people more than anything. And so will I.” With that Aden turns away from the crowd to face the clan leaders who are still standing behind him.
Everyone in the crowd is looking at him in silence, wondering what else he’s going to do. The leaders look confused, and a bit worried. Changing the traditions won’t be easy, Aden knows it. But he has to do it for Lexa, for himself, and for all the leaders to come. So, with a deep breath, he does what no other commander has publicly done before him: he bows to his people. The clan leaders look at him in shock. Clarke is the only one who doesn’t seem surprised, but that’s because she’s lived this moment before. With Lexa.
As if the scene alone wasn’t already bringing back all the memories of that day, Aden begins to utter the exact same words as Lexa. But this time they are directed to all the clan leaders and not just to her. "I swear fealty to you, members of the Coalition. I vow to treat your needs as my own. And your people as my people."
When he's done, Aden remains knelt down and moves his gaze up to look at Clarke. He knows how much those words mean for her. He knows Lexa said them before him, because it was Clarke herself who has told him about the vow, and how Lexa had bowed before her. So, he is not surprised to find tears running downs Clarke’s cheeks, just like he's not surprised when she moves forward to help him up to his feet. Aden doesn't hesitate before taking her hand. It's not a sign of weakness, not anymore.
"Heda." Clarke addresses him with his new title when he’s back on her eye level, and then she bows to him. It feels a bit off to be calling that someone other than Lexa, but she’s going to have to get used to it. Even though acknowledging Aden is the new Commander makes Lexa’s death even more real. It is like coming to the realization that the world has moved on, while she is still having a hard time coming to terms with the truth. Because, honestly, how do you move on from the love of your life?
As Clarke kneels down right in front of Aden, all the other clan leaders follow her cue and bowing to their new Heda. When the formalities are over, Clarke and Aden move to their seats, and them and the leaders sit down on their chairs. That's when the crowd explodes into loud cheers and applauses for their new young leader. Aden doesn't stop them this time, and he just waits for everyone to calm down and grow quite again. When silence takes over the main square, Titus moves on the platform to announce the ceremony is over, and to invite everyone to the feast in celebration of Aden’s ascension.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Right after the ceremony he had to perform his duties. First, the feast, where basically all of his people came to congratulate him one at a time. So, pretty much he spent two hours watching everyone eating and drinking, while all he could do was waving, smiling, and nodding in appreciation of people’s respects. Then, he had to take part in four different meetings, without any break to go get something in his stomach. After that, there was the paperwork, an incredible amount of paperwork that needed to be done. It's impressive how Lexa made it all seem so easy, while in reality it's mostly boring and exhausting.
Even meals are boring apparently. When he finally gets the chance to eat something at the end of the day, he finds himself all alone in the big dining room. The only company he has is that of a servant who brings him the dishes, without ever uttering a single word. This was just his first day as Commander, but Aden already misses the good old times when he'd eat with the Nightbloods, or with Clarke and Lexa. Speaking of Lexa, if only she could be here to help him out a little. When he comes to theory, he knows everything about leading the Coalition, but on more practical terms he still finds himself a bit at a loss. Imagining what Lexa would do in his position is helpful, but it would be so much better if he actually got the chance to ask her for advice.
He's so tired by the time he finishes his dinner, he doesn’t even realize he's going the wrong way and, instead of heading to his quarters, he's going to his old room. It’s the sound of loud laughter that brings him back to reality, and that's when he recognizes where he's standing at. For a moment, he considers turning away and going to his new room, but the voices of his friends convince him to knock on the door and get inside. As soon as he steps into the room, all the kids rush to him to bring him into a tight group hug. They're all cheering and congratulating him, and Aden is so moved by their words that he's only seconds away from crying.
"Hey, guys. How was your day?" Aden asks, swallowing back his tears.
"How was our day?! You mean how was your day, Heda!" Skye interjects excitedly.
"Well… let's just say I've had one hell of a day." He jokes, making everyone chuckle.
"I bet you did."
“Clarke.” Aden says surprised to find her there. Somehow, he’s missed her presence when he got into the room. And not just hers apparently. Marcus and Abby are there as well.
"We were just having a nice chat with the kids, but we can leave now." Kane says when he notices Aden's surprised look. None of them were expecting the boy to come over, honestly, but he understands he must've wanted to be with his family after the long day he had.
"Oh, no, it's fine. You can stay. We can chat altogether." And with that everyone goes back to sit on the floor.
They talk for hours about everything and anything, and when everyone but the adults, Clarke and Aden have fallen asleep, Abby and Kane leave to go back to their room. Carefully, Clarke and Aden put all the kids into their beds before sitting together on what used to be Aden's one. They stay quiet for a long time, the boy's head resting on Clarke’s shoulder. At last, it is Aden to break the silence.
"I really miss her, you know?" He whispers, knowing Clarke understands perfectly who he is talking about. "I just wish she were still here to show me what is the right thing to do."
"Yeah… I get that feeling a lot too." Clarke hesitates a moment before asking. "If... If I told you I saw her... Like, last night... Would you believe me?"
Aden raises his head and turns to look at her directly in the eyes to see if she's playing with him or something. But Clarke is looking at him in all seriousness, so he responds with a curious rise of his eyebrow.
"But… how's that even possible?"
"With a chip...” Aden gives her a very confused look, so she tries to explain. “It's a sort of key to another world, a virtual reality where there is no death. Look, it's difficult to explain, but it-"
"What… You mean like some sort of vision in your dreams?" He interrupts, trying to understand.
"Well... Yeah, sort of..."
"And what did she say?"
"That she's proud of you." Of course, Clarke knows exactly the kind of answer Aden is looking for. "Aden, you can't even imagine how proud she was to know you are the new commander."
"And what about the Conclave? Was she mad that we went against the rules to save the kids?”
"No. Not even a little." Clarke smiles remembering Lexa's words. "Actually, she told me she's always wanted to change those stupid rules, and she was really glad no one had to die in the Conclave." Her smile turns into worry when she notices Aden's eyes are filled with unshed tears.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing, it’s… it’s stupid.” Aden says turning away in shame.
“Is it though?”
“It’s just that... I don't wanna disappoint her." He states looking back at Clarke and with a voice so small it makes Clarke emotional as well. In this moment, she realizes that Aden might be the Commander, but he’s also still just a kid.
"Aden..." She doesn't know what to say so she just moves forward to embrace him in a tight hug.
"I'm sorry..."
"Mmh?" She hums questioningly.
"I'm sorry if I'll ever disappoint you in the future. Any of you. I really want to be a good Heda for all of my people."
"And you will be. I know you'll make us nothing but proud." She says before breaking the hug to kiss Aden lovingly on his forehead. "Get some sleep now, Heda. It's been a long day."
"Will you stay with me?" He sounds so much like a little kid tonight rather than a Commander of 13 clans.
"Always." She whispers lowering both of them to a lying position on the bed. “Reshop, Heda.”
“Reshop, Clarke.”
Aden is fast asleep before Clarke can even cover the both of them with some blankets. When she sets her head on the pillow next to his, she can't help but smile at the sight of his peaceful sleeping face. Suddenly, she becomes aware of just how tired she is as well, so she lets sleep take over her features. But of course, there’s one last thought on her mind before sleep overcomes her.
Lexa.
Reshop, ai hodness.

It Lives No More- Part 2
Tumblr media
Summary: It’s been a 6 years since the events of It Lives Beneath have happened and the crew has mostly moved on from it. Parker’s nowhere to be found,  Danni has become the top writer for ClickIt, Tom’s graduated from Hartfield with his robotics degree and is working on starting his own shop, and Imogen is happily married to Athena Vance in Athena’s old home. One day in the summer the gang decides to get back together for a reunion trip to see each other.
Last Chapter: The gang (sans Parker, obviously) has gotten back together after years of going on thier own paths and are on their way to the movies to watch “Desire and Decorum: II”. Athena suffers a horrible nightmare about what happened in the events of It Lives Beneath. Even though she’s moved away from the town, the memories continue to haunt her.
“…so I was in a really low place when Sonia broke up with me at Hartfield, and the band and I decided to go on tour out of the country for a while,” Kaitlyn recalled, looking out the window. “We went to Japan, which is where I finally met Danni…”
The girls were getting set up at a local club in Tokyo. Amara offered to set up on the stage, Rachel had fucked off to God knows where (thankfully she always shows up just before the concert starts. So Kaitlyn was all alone in the VIP lounge room. She nursed a cup of champange, looking wistlessly at her phone.
For whatever reason, she went on social media to see how everyone was. Zack and Grant got engaged, Abbie and Tyler broke up but split the profits of the game they made equally, so now Abbie owns a museum with world famous artist Nadia Park. There have been rumors that she’s been seeing famous actress Gem of Hollywood, but neither has either confirmed and denied it. As for Tyler, he’s working with a team of techies to build what will be known as the Atlas so people can finally move out of Earth to other planets. Most people think he won’t be able to do it, but he’s teamed up with some of the top technicians in the country. No one knows their exact location, and aside from announcing the project, nothing’s been revealed yet. Zig’s been teaching in Japan, and he tweeted that he was gonna visit the concert soon. Chris is all over American news, but no one’s really surprised. Becca moved to New York and is gunning for the district attorney position.
Then…there was Sonia. After they broke up and  Sonia refused to get back together in London, she went back to London after graduating. She hesitated to look at Sonia’s page, but she clicked on it anyway. Sonia’s been featured on literature magazines around the world, been invited on several talk shows, and even helped with writing the script for the Desire and Decorum movie series. But that wasn’t what she was most focused on. Her most recent pictures…she had gotten with James while they collaborated on more playwrighting projects They were moving in with each other, and it looked like James was going to propse with the way he and Sonia talked about each other online. It hurt a lot to see, since she spent the past couple years trying to push Sonia and all her friends at Hartfield  out of her mind and only keep in contact with Abby.
A barista came over and placed a drink on Kaitlyn’s table.
“I didn’t order anything?” Kaitlyn said, confused.
“It’s from the lady sitting at the bar. Says her name’s Danni. She wants to talk to you.”
Kaitlyn wanted to say she wasn’t really intrested in talking to anyone when she got a glimpse of the woman the barista was  referring to. Within seconds, she was sitting with the girl at the bar.
“So we talked  for while before the concert,” Kaitlyn continued, back in the present. “She interviewed me for her company, but we also decided to sneak out of the concert for a while…we were back in time of course!”
“Her bandmates wouldn’t stop teasing her about it when we came back. Damn Kaitlyn was on fire that night,” Danni added. “You know she kept eye contact with me the whole time and blew me a kiss.”
“I invited her back to our hotel room to hang out with her during our stay in Tokyo and promised to see each other once we got back in America. We’ve been together ever since.”
“Awwww!” Imogen gushed. “Meeting the love of your life at a concert sounds so poetic and romantic.”
“Yeah, I met my wife here fighting lake monsters and trying to take down an evil cult,” Athena laughed. Imogen laughed as well, but not as earnestly. She looks down at her stomach. Athena noticed Imogen’s look and placed a gentle  hand on her stomach.
“For all I know, my mom could have been pregnant with me while she was working with the society,” Imogen murmured. “How long was she planning to keep all of that from me?”
“Genny...” Athena whispered softly, trying to ease her mind from her awful parents. Personally, she didn’t miss their controlling behavior towards Imogen and was secretly glad they were dead. Well, maybe there were less gory ways for them to die.
Imogen on the other hand, was unable to let them go. Athena didn’t blame her, as much as she despised her parents. In one summer, she lost her best friend, her parents, and her horse. Athena swore she’d do anything in her power to make her feel better about it.
“Getting close to your due date, huh, Genny?” Tom asked suddenly. “You sure this road trip is a good idea?”
Imogen snapped out of her funk. “Huh? Oh, I’ll be fine, as long as I don’t do anything too extreme. “
The van pulled up at the movie theare and they all climbed out. They paid for their tickets and headed inside.
Tom and Andy voluenteered to get snacks while the girls found their seats.  A few minutes later everyone was settled and ready to watch the movie. Kaitlyn and Imogen sighed as they watch Lady Clara woo Annabelle in the movie.
“I can’t wait till Clara does away with that awful Duke so she can live happily ever after with Miss Parsons,” Imogen whispered.
“Me as well. If that were me I would have probably killed the duke by now, keeping me away from the woman of my dreams,” Athena responded with a frown. Imogen rested her head on Athena’s shoulder in response. Athena pressed a gentle kiss to her wife’s forehead.
The two of them giggled a little and continue watching the movie. They’re about halfway into the movie when they heard soft snoring coming from behind them. Athena turns around and sees Tom and Andy sleeping peacefully, but clumsily.
“I guess the movie wasn’t their thing,” Kaitlyn giggled, only to find that Danni had also fallen asleep on her shoulder. “Damn, and I wanted to sneak in some movie kisses.”
Imogen gave Athena a coy smile, sliding into her lap.
“Normally I would complain about being unable to see the movie, but this view is 100 times better,” Athena chuckled as she wrapped an arm around Imogen’s waist and pulled her closer. Imogen tried to stifle her giggles as Athena peppered kisses on her cheeks.
Soon, the movie ended, and Athena turned around to wake up the sleeping young men behind them. Andy was the first to wake up, his face barely inches from Tom’s. He smirked.
“Not bad,” he said with a grin. Tom opened his eyes wide, blushing.
“Andy! I uh…I mean…I didn’t see you there!”
Tom and Andy untangled themselves from each other and got up from their seats. Andy stretched.
“I’m gonna go grab more snacks for the road,” he said, walking off.
“You’ve been dating him for what, 5 years? How do you still get so flustered around Andy?” Danni asked Tom.
“There’s a distinct difference between seeing someone as your best friend and seeing someone as the love of your life that you want to spend forever with, ok?” Tom stammered. “Yes, we’ve been dating for 5 years but I still feel the same way I did when he asked me out.”
“Seems you’ve got it bad for Andy then,” Kaitlyn joked. “If you love him so much, why don’t you marry him?”
“Well…” Tom trailed off. He stopped when he noticed the girls grinning at him. “N-not that I was planning for that to happen or anything!”
“Planning for what?” They hear Andy ask from behind them.
“Planning for this awesome night on the town Tom wanted to take you on once we got to the hotel,” Athena cut in, winking at Tom.  Tom frantically sliced a hand across his throat, but it’s too late.
Andy eagerly pulled him out of the theatre and into the car. Over his shoulder, Tom mouthed something but Athena can’t read his lips. She just smiled and mouthed, “You’re welcome.”

Samuel and James Fraser Chapter 35 Jamie and Claire
Tumblr media
She feels very much alone as she prepares for her wedding. Her first one. Her parents could be here, of course. Jamie and Sam had both asked her. Several times but, it just felt to strange and non-traditional. Besides, she wasn’t dressing up like her version of a real bride.
She is wearing a dress. Her fanciest. Her hair down for that is how Jamie likes it. Minimal make-up. Gold drop earrings in, a pearl necklace that Jamie had given her when he officially asked for her hand. She moves the engagement ring over to her right hand and took several steadying breathes.
They will have a few guests, Mary and her daughter. Sam had explained that they needed two adult witnesses so that is why he had invited her.
“Besides the little lass will enjoy it.” She agrees and tells herself she has no problem with it. No problem with her being here to keep Sam company while Jamie and her head off on their honeymoon? She should be okay. She is a mate. Just a mate. In a month, she will be hand fast to Sam.
A deep sigh as she thinks about that month. They had decided that the focus would be on her and Jamie. After they returned from the hotel their honeymoon will be at, they will be sharing a room exclusively. She will do the same with Sam in a months time. It makes as much sense as anything can in this situation.
She has them both. Is she a horrible person for wishing Sam had never meet Mary? He deserves someone he can talk to, vent to. In truth, she has no reason to be jealous, no reason at all. But she is.
“Caitriona?” She jerks around to Mary standing in her doorway, “Sam thought you might need help.”
“That is quite sweet but I am ready.” She finds a smile for her. She is a nice woman. Sweet and kind. Besides, it is her wedding day. She will be joining herself to aa man she loves very much. She can't let unfounded jealousy ruin her day.
“You are quite lovely. Shall I go tell them you are ready then?”
“Yes please.” She takes a few more steadying breaths before she walks out. Her breath catches when she sees her groom. He wears a kilt with a modern dress shirt and tie. His eyes alight when he sees her. She walks on steadier legs over to him. His hand encloses on hers and she hears Abbie sigh with a soft, ‘so romantic'.
Sam chuckles. She doesn’t search for him. She keeps her eyes fixed on Jamie as the register begins the ceremony. They have chosen traditional vows. It is simpler in a quite complex situation. They only part they request left out is ‘ forsaken all others.’
Holding tight to each other, they promise to love, honor, and cherish. To stay true through good times and bad. To fully share a life.
Abbie hands them the rings and they slip them on each others fingers.
“May I present Jamie and Claire Fraser. You may kiss.” They do as Abbie cheers.
“Thank you for being here to witness.” Claire tells Mary over lunch after.
“You’re welcome. Sam asked. I understand you needed two witnesses. I also understand that Sam needed a mate today.”
“Yes, he did. Thank you for that too.”
“So when will you commit yourself to him?”
“In a month. We all discussed it. A month dedicated to each seems, well, as reasonable as it can under the circumstances.”
“Yes. Under them.”
“Claire. Mrs. Fraser. Come love. The honeymoon suite awaits.” Jamie interrupts their conversation.
“Yes.” She turns away from Mary to her daughter and Sam. “Abbie, thank you for doing such a good job with the rings.”
“You are welcome. Thank you for inviting mam and I. It was my first wedding.”
“I am glad you enjoyed it. Sam, we are leaving now.”
“Aye Mrs. Fraser. See you in three days.”
“Yes.” It feels awkward not to kiss him. But, that was the deal. She owes her husband faithfulness and Abbie would never understand. She hugs him instead. Jamie also thanks their guests, hugs his brother, and they are off.
