The power of having a Hispanic family that have impossibly high standards is being able to manage multiple personalities/identities like a pro. Going to my Grandma's house? Boom, I'm suddenly a Catholic girl that loves dresses and sewing. Dad's house? I'm a carefree and forgetful girl. Mom's house? I'm a straight-A student, with perfect attendance that knows 5 languages and can draw. Honestly sometimes I forget how I really am until I go on social media or go with my friends.

Because I’m thinking about it now I want to ask people: what not-your-first-language words or phrases have you incorporated into your everyday speech? I don’t mean like loanwords, actual words or phrases that aren’t your first language.

Here’s some of mine!

Perdona: Italian, pardon/excuse me. This was incorporated into my personal lexicon after a period of being obsessed with this song. Now I will often say “perdona” instead of “excuse me”

Bienvenue: French, welcome (though for some reason my brain thinks of it as “good evening”). I cannot tell you how obsessed I was with Cabaret as a child. My mother would play the soundtrack all the time and I loved it. Did I realize I was singing about strip clubs and the rise of fascism in Germany? lol nope. But the greeting in this song, “Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome!” always stuck in my head. Willkomen was harder to understand and pronounce as a small American child (or maybe I thought it was just “welcome in”), so I guess “bienvenue” is the one that stuck. (Tangent, even though it is written for, ahem, like-minded characters, I am very upset that right-wingers lay claim to “Tomorrow Belongs To Me” because I always thought it sounded pretty.)

Mon ami: French, my friend. There are many things I could blame for this, but I’m gonna blame the Hetalia fandom. Hamilton brought it back into my vocal dictionary.

No me gusta: Spanish, I don’t like that. Double pronged, I took Spanish in school also while this was a meme. Everyone in my school said this so I just kinda picked it up and it never left.

¿Por qué?: Spanish, why? Again mostly because I took Spanish in school and for some reason it sounds nice to me.

Nani? (何?) : Japanese, what? Another double pronged one, I’ve been passively learning Japanese for ages, and “nani?” has become sort of a meme. I specifically often say “nani the fuck?” when I’m startled or perplexed.

Ee to... (ええと...) and Ano... (あの...): Japanese, um/vague thinking noise. I sometimes find myself mumbling this while thinking. I watched too much anime. I specifically blame Yu-Gi-Oh! for this because Yugi did this a lot if I remember right. Very uncertain boi.

Gomen ne (御免ねー): Japanese, sorry. Weeb + apologetic = saying this too much. Especially saying “gomennasai” ( 御免なさい ) is more formal and also felt more...cringey somehow. Probably didn’t help that there was a song called Gomennasai that was in English and kinda cringe.

Ne (ねー): Japanese, vague and varied but similar to “hey” or “right?”. I kinda say this long and drawn out. I blame Izaya from Durarara!! for this habit.

*rubs fist on chest in circular motion*: ASL, sorry. My mom taught me and the kids she watched basic ASL so the little ones could communicate when they weren’t good for talking at the moment. I am a very apologetic person and it’s actually become a nervous habit now to rub my chest when I feel bad.

*move flat hand from touching chin outward/downward*: ASL, thank you. I use this one a lot when I’m nonverbal. Simple and I’m grateful people put up with me.

Mum: Just the non-American English pronunciation of mom. I (unfortunately) grew up reading and watching Harry Potter. And had a Doctor Who phase. And adore Good Omens. I kept hearing and reading the word pronounced that way and eventually it just stuck.

I will add more as I remember them, but tell me yours! I want to know your weird language things!

random hcs/things i may make canon in my rewrite

zane, travis, laurence, gene, and aaron all have piercings

zane and travis has eyebrow, nose, ears, lip piercings. laurence has brow, lip, and ear piercings. aaron has his tongue and nose pierced. gene has his tongue, ears, eyebrow, and lip pierced

aphmau HAD her ears pierced but she forgot to wear earrings so they closed up

(zane took her to get her ears pieced and she held his hand for dear life)

gene, zane, lucinda, and nicole have tattoos

garroth and aphmau cannot be trusted alone in the kitchen, they need constant supervision or there will be a housefire

laurence teaches travis and dante to cook

aphmau, the ro'meaves, travis, nana, and laurence are all multi-langual

aph (spanish & english), nana (japanese & english), and laurence (italian & english) are all bi-langual. the ro'meaves (french, english, german) are tri-langual and travis (italian, french, english, and japanese) is quad-langual

travis is an language junkie and loves learning about different languages

katelyn is hard of hearing and everyone on mystreet is learning asl to support her

hc that all the ninja are multilingual.

at first, most of them just had a second (or third) language that they grew up with. But as they started saving more and more people, they all started learning more languages too better communicate with the people they save.

This can lead to some funny circumstances of them forgetting words in English or their native language. Sometimes, they don't realize they're speaking a different language.

Under the cut are my personal headcannons of what languages they're able to speak and understand.

They all know ASL and English.

Kai and Nya's native language is Spanish

Kai is fluent in Portuguese. He can get by in Filipino and Thai. He knows bits and pieces of Hindi and Mandarin.

Nya is fluent in Thai and German. She can get by in French, Latin, and Mandarin. She knows bits and pieces of Italian and Portuguesse.

Zane's native language is Russian.

After Zane was rebuilt, he was able to speak and understand every language.

Cole's native language is Tagalog and Hindi.

Cole is fluent in Spanish and Arabic. He can get by in Korean and German. He knows bits and pieces of Polish and Greek.

Jay's native language is French.

Jay is fluent in Italian, Vietnamese, and Japanese. He can get by in Polish and Hindi. He knows bits and pieces of German and Arabic.

Jay only learnt Italian due to it being Cliff Gordon's native language. It worked out when he found out he was Gordon's son.

Pixal was programmed to speak and understand every language.

Lloyd grew up speaking bits of Mandarin and Japanese- growing up at Darkley's exposed him to multiple languages, so he's able to get by in a few but he doesn't necessarily remember the names of them.

Lloyd is fluent in Mandarin, Japanese, and Thai. He can get by in Vietnamese and Spanish. He also knows bits and pieces of Hindi and French.

Lloyd can also understand Oni and Dragon. In some cases he's able to speak both. He doesn't realize when he's doing it.

Headcanon #1 (Magnus Chase)

Magnus is great with languages. He learned ASL in a few months, on the streets, with only Blitz and Hearth as teachers. Before his mother's death, he already spoke English, French, German and Polish. When he got to Valhalla he learned Spanish, Old Norse, Swedish, Latin, and Italian.

Alex watched in amusement as he learned Gaelic in 4 weeks, only so he and Mallory can insult people without them understanding a single word they're saying.

Cupid is like every normal middle school student, a pink-haired half-vampire totally not crushing on her girl best friend, seemingly born from every weird twelve year olds innate wish: make a video game.

Cupid journeys through the depths of hell to rescue her "girl best friend" (very subtle) from the evil Dark Overlord Xanata, who sealed her best friend into a crystal because she Also wants to be Cupid's "girl best friend".

she boasts a variety of super cool barely vampire related attacks that involve just straight up yelling at enemies! this girl has a sonic screech that can shatter glass, bulletproof bat wings, and a literal gun! you can practically hear angel with a shotgun (nightcore) blasting in the background.

why is the embodiment of love a vampire? because vampires are now ostensibly fallen angels. why is she fighting hell if she's a fallen angel? because it's cool.

She is so cool. My little self insert. My baby. Epic powerful magic.

Ash was part of a secret subspecies of humans (Homo sapiens dimutus) which could shapeshift, which she used to grow huge black wings or turn into a black leopard or look like a monster to scare enemies, anything as long as her brain stayed the same size or got denser to fit smaller. When she shapeshifted she would release green and blue fire from the power of the transformation (cause she has lots of copper in her blood that burns green. To protect against cancer, you see. Shapeshifting has lots of cancer risk so copper is sooo important)

She became one by genetic engineering at 15 so the dimutus could get more soldiers and spies for a war with the demon-like psyuedos (child soldier lol). She could come back to life because she had a failsafe that would activate where she would shapeshift away the wound and her brain would jolt back online. The only way to kill a dimutus was to kill the brain.

Like other dimutus, she could also dimension hop, so she'd travel the multiverse, from tv show to tv show or to the universe with dragons or with cool landscapes. She was good with a sword and something called a bladed quarterstaff, which is basically one of those two sided lightsabers but a blade. She was mentored by one of the most powerful dimutus of the war and is super powerful too compared to other dimutus.

Okay time for my propaganda once more!

Ash is my girl, my baby.

She has TWO dragons. The first one is Flicker, who is strong and agile with black scales and a violet belly. Ash rides on her back and she speaks dragon at her. Her other dragon is Zephyr, who she raised from an egg and he looks like a blue sky with white patches like clouds, and random little flecks of gold scales. He's lithe and fast and so agile. She can summon them from their alternate universes by calling out "Tul Lüg" for Flicker and "Zep-iagh" for Zephyr, and they leap from portals to fight.

She can speak so many languages. The language of Dimutus is actually Modernized Latin. She knows English, Spanish, French, Latin, Italian, ASL, and has the best translators.

She made friends with a shadowy wolf companion called a Shadowlupe who accepted her as part of the pack. She runs with him in hunts as a wolf.

She can do a double backflip. Enough said.

She would fly with huge black wings, it was her favorite thing to do. Knew how to do all the tricks. She is dimension hopping miles in the air just to fall for ages, then fly at breakneck speeds. And she was terrifying in battle, she would dodge and weave and slash as she passed, an airborne killing machine.

She could give herself big springy legs to jump so high and do crazy tricks. She adapted herself to move fast, bounce and parkour her way at insane speeds. She could traverse so well.

She also did normal parkour. It was a fun challenge to try with minimal modifications. Pretended a lot of parkour POV vids were her.

She had two cats trained to infiltrate bases cause they are kitties and can fit through the vents and no one suspects the kitties. Baya was a Bengal and Shadow was a beautiful medium hair black cat.

She could also dimension hop in a way that was like astral projecting. She'd just be floatin, near invisible. She'd keep her wings in that state to pull them from the dimension fast to use them quickly. Her friends would chill there and comment to her while she was doing boring things.

She had a ragtag best friend and copilot partner Katie that was the mostest important person to her. Her brother in arms, her guy in the chair, her support, and Ash was the same to Katie. They were ride or die, and they died a lot for each other. (I basically made a QPP a decade before I myself ended up in one. Probably an early sign I was aro.)

She lost her arm sometimes, and she'd have a badass prosthetic if she couldn't shapeshift it back right away.

So much trauma from being a child soldier will come later. Her future character with me a decade later is somethin.

My name is Claire but you can call me Eri or Echo! I go by they/them pronouns (also found in my bio). I'm an 18 year old based in the United States.

Since I was young, art and writing have played a major role in my life. Hense, it has been a passion of mine that I'm endlessly turning back to. I'm currently studying creative writing, book publishing, and graphic design online; later hoping to study art history and print production. If I could, I'd indulge in every form of art that there is. I deeply enjoy helping other indie writers and creatives alike out in their journey, from ARC reading to showcasing their small business'!

To date, my poetry has been published in nearly 50 magazines and lit journals across the globe. I plan on releasing 4+ poetry/prose chapbooks, so keep an eye out for any updates regarding them! Moreover, I'm in the process of writing a few novels in an array of genres, sneak peaks of the stories may be shone!

•It’s pretty much standard for Brotherhood officers to know communication like the backs of their hands..however Danse is a nerd and took it further.

•Although not necessarily a language..he is excellent at ASL. However going deeper, the Paladin can also speak Spanish. Maybe not perfectly but can still hold a conversation.

Deacon:

•He’s annoying.

•He has some innate gift for learning languages and knows just a bit about most common languages to render him an effective speaker to any audience. As such..he can speak English, French, Spanish, Russian and a bit of Mandarin..but not perfectly at all in any but English.

Hancock:

•You probably don’t wanna know why he knows these languages..

•Proficient speaker of English, Spanish and just a hint of Italian.

Maxson:

•Useless weirdo..

•He knows basic phrases in a couple but as far as actually being able to speak..well he’s stuck with French, English, and LATIN. That’s right. Huge nerd loves latin and is basically self taught so maybe not perfect but damn near it for wasteland standards.

As the resident Alfred authority (imo) what languages do you think he speaks?

Dude I am very flattered you think so, but I would argue that there are way more accurate depictions of this war criminal on Tumblr :sob: But hey! you're giving me an excuse to drag out my headcanon document.

So, to start with a bit of an indirect answer, I think he speaks near-exclusively in idioms, references, baseball metaphors, and aviator slang. I admit I tend to give him a Souther vernacular. It is mostly borne of my own patterns of speech, but also, for some reason, a large number of people claim the southern accent sounds kindly. Personally, I don't understand why. But I think Alfred - all about charisma - tends to code his speech in this manner. Now, it probably doesn't work on others that know him and his tendencies, but it works enough to make others put down their guard. Makes a man more amicable to negotiations or in listening to his demands.

To give you the direct answer: it kinda changes. I have a list, but I don't take it all that seriously. I think most of the Nations are borderline polyglots anyways. However, apart from English, here are some mainstays I play with:

ASL - Alfred subconsciously will sign along to his own words when he gets into a speech. He is already someone to speak with his hands (more like his whole body). ASL is his default in many situations where his voice chances to fail. On a side note, he also occasionally uses bits and pieces of other sign languages that he's picked up over time.

Spanish - Specifically Mexican Spanish and the dialects from his closest neighbor (apart from Mattie), María. Especially in my region, if something is not in English, it will be in Spanish, if not available in both. My view here is biased.

French - It's usually Cajun or Québécois-flavored because of Mathieu. He does not speak French often and it tends to come out rusty. That, or he purposefully mispronounces it to be a dick.

German - People forget he knows (a very standard) German and to be fair, he doesn't whip it out in most settings. But you must remember that there is a long history of Germans in America, just as there is a long history in the Anglosphere.

Russian - I feel like I don't need to explain this one much. Speaks it fine, but let's just say that his Cyrillic handwriting is piss-poor.

Honorable Mentions - These are some of the languages that change when I come back to my headcanons document and beat at it with a bat. There are other vernaculars and dialects of English that he may be familiar with given his family. I like to think he knows a fair bit of Italian, as well as Polish and Czech. Mostly in reference to major demographics of the immigration booms, though certainly, they weren't the only ones. I know many say he's probably learned or currently learning Japanese, which I can see.
