Chapter four, Do you believe in myths?
“Good grief… I’m starving…!”
Y/n breathed out as she clenched her notebook in her hands. She got up from her kneeling position since the stone platform was hurting her knees and walked over to Joseph who was leaning on a stone wall and quietly sleeping.
‘Should I wake him…? I mean there’s no point since Kars won't show up anytime soon… And he seemed pretty tired before…’ Y/n thought as she stopped her hand from touching Joseph’s shoulder.
He was peacefully sleeping as his chest rose and fell slowly. His arms were crossed and his head rested on the side.
“Let’s go back to translating then…” Y/n muttered under her breath as she went back to the last painting and crouched down to look at the writing.
It wasn’t finished, the last symbol was half way done and unlike the other paintings, the writing beneath this one only reached halfway to the bottom of the stone platform.
The tragic tale of the race of Pillar Men. They were a prosperous nation and worked hard to provide the best life for their people. They had fierce warriors and brave leaders. But since being powerful as they were wasn’t enough, the leaders turned to a more dangerous and mightful source of magic.
The Red Stone of Aja
By the writings, it was a gift of the gods to the leader of the Pillar Men. It wasn’t just a pretty red gemstone that could only be worn by the leader, it had its own magic to it. Quite literally.
There was a quite gruesome ritual that had to be performed in order to activate the power of the necklace.
The holder of the Red Stone of Aja had to bring a worthy sacrifice to the gods in a secret chamber inside the temple, and then the user would be granted the power of the stone.
It wasn’t quite described what exact powers one gets from the Red Stone of Aja but it was something that could easily be taken away by just removing the necklace of the user.
The stone was passed on from generation to generation, but after the war broke out and the next heir to the throne was sent away to sail through the ocean, it was placed into the secret chamber and forgotten by the time.
Y/n sighed as she trailed her fingers over the carved symbols on the wall.
This was probably one of the most interesting finds she has ever researched. So much was written yet so many things were missing…
As she got up she walked to Joseph and crouched in front of him.
“Mr. Joestar-”
But before she shook Joseph awake, a loud splash echoed through the chamber. Y/n whirled her head to the dark tunnel and narrowed her eyes.
The hairs on her arms stood up as she heard the person swimming towards them.
“Mr. Joestar… Wake up!” Y/n panicked as she quickly shook Joseph awake and he groaned.
“God dammit… Where am I?” Joseph grunted as he opened his eyes and focused on Y/n and noticed her distressed expression.
“Dear, what is going on?” Joseph questioned as he got up and grabbed her shoulders in concern. Y/n pointed to the tunnel and all of a sudden Kars emerged from the dark and swam up to the platform.
He got up and swept up his wet hair, “Dear colleagues, I’m so sorry for such a long wait… I went to get a rope from the tent and it took me a while to find one. Hope you can forgive me.” he sighed as he walked closer to Y/n and smiled.
“Hopefully, Mr. Joestar didn’t give you a headache did he?” Kars asked as he went to grab her hand but Y/n backed off a little and a frowning Joseph walked over to stand next to her.
“No need to worry, sir. He didn’t. He helped me translate the writings in this chamber.” Y/n lied as she clenched the notebook in her hand.
Kars laughed a little but stopped as soon as he spotted the leather notebook in Y/n’s hands, “Ms. L/n… Do you mind if I read some of your translations?” he asked as he noticed Y/n clenching her notebook even more.
She anxiously gulped and shakily gave the notebook to Kars who smiled graciously at her, “Why are you so anxious, dear? You are not hiding anything here, are you?” Kars joked drily and Y/n shook her head.
“Of course not! Why would you think that?” Y/n asked as she glanced at the Red Stone of Aja and then at Joseph who was still frowning at Kars.
Kars noticed Y/n looking at the red gemstone and his eyes widened.
“Ms. L/n! What is this?” Kars asked as he approached the stone plinth and took the necklace in his own hands.
“Mr. Kars! Why are you touching the artefact-” Joseph chided in but the stone chamber started to shake.
“SEE!? THIS IS WHY YOU DON’T FUCKING TOUCH ANYTHING!” Joseph shouted as his legs wobbled beneath the stone platform. Y/n tried to hold onto Joseph and scold him for being a hypocrite since he did the same thing as Kars did but that wasn’t the most important thing now.
The wall with the painting on that was ahead of them started to part away and revealed a dusty wide and tall dark tunnel with torches lined up on the sides.
The torches lit up and illuminated the long and dusty hallway.
Kars awed at the sight and opened the notebook and started to read. “-the next heir…. The Red Stone of Aja… Secret chamber… Ms. L/n- Was this the secret chamber you were describing in your translations?” he asked as he began to slowly walk towards the tunnel.
As Y/n was about to answer, Kars came to a halt as he stepped on an object. “Oh… Would you look at that…” he murmured as he picked up the object and observed it.
It was the dagger Joseph picked up before.
The dagger looked much smaller in his hands than in Joseph's which made it look like a mere kids toy.
“Mr. Kars, how about you put that down…?” Y/n squeaked out as she pointed to the dagger in his hands. Kars laughed and gripped the dagger, “Oh, Ms. L/n… You are so hilarious! We can’t leave such valuable artefacts laying around just like that? Now follow me.” he said as he motioned for Y/n and Joseph to follow him through the tunnel.
Y/n anxiously looked at Joseph, “Mr. Joestar… I have a bad feeling about this…” she mumbled out nervously.
Joseph nodded his head, “Me too, dear. When I put the necklace around you nothing happened but after Kars merely touched it… this happened.” Joseph said as he motioned at the torch-lit tunnel.
The h/c haired archeologist nodded her head at Joseph, “You are right, Mr. Joestar. Then what do we do with the necklace?” she asked him. Joseph quickly walked over to the plinth, took the necklace and carefully placed it around her neck.
“-We put it somewhere safe.” Joseph said as he adjusted the necklace around her neck.
“Mr. Joestar-” Y/n went to argue but Joseph put his finger against her lips, successfully shushing her. “Don’t argue now, doll. Now let's hurry if we don’t want Kars to bite our heads off.” Joseph laughed and both of them headed towards the tunnel.
It was a two minute walk to the much bigger stone chamber that was also lit up with torches.
In front of Y/n and Joseph were huge golden statues of two men with their arms put into an ‘X’ position and a rectangular stone platform between them.
“This-This is truly marvellous!” Kars breathed out as he walked around the huge stone chamber.
Y/n gulped as she touched the necklace that was around her neck in anxiety. “Mr. Kars, can I have my notebook back?” she asked as she started to walk towards Kars slowly.
Kars laughed, “Of course, dove. I apologise for not giving it to you sooner.” he smiled a little as Y/n walked over to him and outstretched her hand to take the notebook back into her hands but Kars grabbed her hand and pulled her closer to him.
“My my… The necklace suits you so well, my dove…” Kars purred as the stone blade of the dagger brushed up against her upper arm.
“I… You can let me go now…” Y/n muttered as she swallowed her spit as she looked into his narrowed eyes.
Joseph who was side eyeing Kars this whole time went on to break them apart but the room started to shake violently.
“Not this shit again-” Joseph wheezed out as he turned around to see the stone wall starting to close.
“Y/n! KARS! WE HAVE TO GET OUT! THE WALL WILL CLOSE!” Joseph screamed as he tried to steady his legs.
Y/n’s eyes widened as she tried to trash away from Kars' grip, “Let me go, Mr. Kars! Don’t you see that we don’t have the time!?” she shouted but Kars didn’t even flinch.
He only lowered his gaze at her and gripped her forearm.
Joseph, in great panic, looked between the closing wall and Y/n who tried to get out of Kars’ grip.
“She said that you let her go, you idiot!” Joseph roared as he ran to Kars and yanked Y/n by her wait away from Kars, and began to run to the closing stone wall.
“I think we’re going to make it!” Joseph exclaimed as he held Y/n closer to him. But just as he was about to slide through, the stone wall closed.
The dust blew into their faces making them cough and swat away the remaining dust particles.
“We’re… We’re stuck…” Y/n mumbled out in disbelief as she jumped out of Joseph's arm and began to look around the wall.
Her heartbeat quickened as tears started to form in her eyes.
“Come on Joseph, help me!” she shouted as a lump in her throat began to form. Joseph only stood behind her, not saying anything. “Dear… There is nothing we an do-”
“Or maybe there is?”
Kars began to laugh as he gripped the dagger in his hand and kicked away Y/n’s notebook that fell out of her hands.
Y/n’s heavy breathing stopped as she turned to look at Kars. Joseph narrowed his eyes at Kars and went to stand closer to distressed Y/n.
“What… What do you suggest Mr. Kars?” Y/n asked as she slowly began to walk back through the tunnel.
Joseph went to grab her hand but just as his fingertips were about to touch her hand she moved away.
“Come closer dear, I can’t see you well when you are that far away from me.” Kars said in a calming tone.
Y/n gulped as she walked closer to Kars and whipped a tear in her eyes. She turned to look at Joseph who was quick to follow her.
“So, what is your plan Mr. Kars?” Y/n asked as he raised her eyebrow at the purple haired archeologist.
Kars smirked as he motioned to the stone platform between the two tall golden statues, “See this, my dove? This is the ceremonial table… A place where the next heir makes his sacrifice to become one of the gods…” he breathed out as his eyes casted down to the necklace around her neck.
Joseph scrunched up his nose and walked over to Y/n, “Alright Kars, enough of your bullshiting and tell us exactly what you’re planning..” he snarled and Kars rolled his eyes.
“Well if you want to know so badly, Mr. Joestar, then let’s get straight to the point.” Kars sneered as he walked up to Joseph and lightly poked him with the stone dagger.
Before Joseph could move the dagger away from him Kars grabbed him by his collar, lifted him up and slammed him on the floor.
“JOSEPH!” Y/n cried out as she tried to run to Joseph but Kars yanked her back by her hair.
“You, my dear- You stay with me…” Kars said as he pushed her back, making Y/n fall on her back and groan in pain.
Kars smirked as he glanced at unmoving Joseph with his head bleeding.
He turned to Y/n and slowly started to walk towards her, “Ah, Ms. L/n, you must be so confused right now… But do not worry, I’ll explain everything.” he laughed as Y/n started to move away from him as she was still on the ground.
“While you and Mr. Joestar were stuck in that chamber, I took some time to look around the temple’s throne room and guess what? I found another secret chamber. It was filled with writings on the walls and it was littered with paintings… And after reading it, everything clicked…” Kars breathed out as he gripped the dagger in his hands.
Y/n scrunched up her eyebrows in confusion, “W-What do you mean by that…?” she asked as she lightly touched the Red Stone of Aja that was around her neck. Kars chuckled as he walked to her and crouched to her level.
“Ms. L/n… Do you believe in myths?” Kars asked the distressed archeologist. “I… I would say I do…?” Y/n replied, not knowing what to answer to such a question.
Kars started to laugh as he grabbed Y/n by her arms before she could back away more and lifted her up to his level.
Her breath hitched as she looked into his fiery red eyes.
“Then I think you won’t mind hearing this one, would you?” Kars said with a smirk as he began to walk to the stone platform between the two golden statues.
Y/n didn’t even try to trash away from his strong grip, knowing he will hurt her even more. She felt the dagger pressing up on her arm as she was put on to the stone platform.
“You see…” Kars said as he lowered his face closer to Y/n’s, “The last heir to the throne on this island was sent off to sail the oceans with low chances of surviving. But luck was on his side and he was found stranded on the shore of what today's known as New York.”
Kars sighed dramatically as he picked up the Red Stone of Aja and looked at his reflection in it, “The family that took him in was overly penniless. But they gave him a good life. But as they grew older, he stayed the same. After everyone died, he was forced to live on his own and survive the fast-paced world.” he said as he took off the necklace of Y/n’s neck.
She listened to his speech but kept glancing at an unmoving Joseph. He sure wasn’t dead but as minutes passed her worry grew bigger.
“He was once again left to be all by himself, searching for his place of origin. So after many many years… He saw an opportunity to work for the W.A.O. and the man himself, Dr. Jenkins took him under his wing and taught him everything he knew about the world of archeology.” Kars said as put the necklace around his neck and looked deeply into Y/n’s eyes.
He smirked as he placed the dagger on her neck, “Does that remind you of somebody, Ms. L/n? I’ll give you a moment to think. But I know you’re a smart girl and you already know the answer.” he laughed as Y/n’s eyes widened and she shivered in fear.
She was petrified, she couldn't even move.
“That… That orphan… Is you.”
And all of a sudden everything clicked in her mind. This was the reason he left his expedition to come with them, and since he knew Dr. Jenkins on a personal level, it was easily arranged.
Kars chuckled as he shook his head, “I knew you would connect the dots easily, my dove. Now I presume you know what’s going to happen next?” he glided the dagger up and down on her exposed arm.
Y/n’s throat tightened as her face paled.
“I know, I know… But did you really think that after finally finding out my true origin, I’ll just take notes and leave? This will make me much more powerful than any force on earth! Even if you try to escape, the wall won’t open until my transformation is done. So I suggest we get this over with.” Kars whispered the last part as grabbed Y/n’s wrists in one hand and pinned them above her head.
Y/n yelped as she felt the dagger being placed on top of her skin on her left arm. “Please! Don’t do this!” Y/n cried out but Kars didn’t listen. He pressed the sharp blade down on her arm and started to carve in the symbols.
The burning pain on her skin made her hollow out in pain as she tried to trash around but to no avail. “P-Please stop!” Y/n hollered out as she felt blood trickle down her arm.
“Do not cry, my dove. The calmer you are, the faster this is going to be.” Kars sneered as he gripped her wrists thighter.
He continued to write the symbols and Y/n grind her teeth to focus on something else.
“There we go… All done- GAH-” Kars choked up as he pulled away from Y/n and started to cough.
The blood from her arms was smeared across the dagger which fell on to the ground and Kars dropped on his knees and hands.
Y/n felt herself being drained of her energy as she saw Kars starting to illuminate in prism light. She covered her eyes from the blinding light and curled up on top of the platform.
The chamber was filled up with Kars’ screams of agony as he trashed around the ground. His clothes ripped as his hair grew longer.
Tears streamed down his eyes as he felt every inch of his body burn in excruciating pain.
“AH- THIS- GAH-” Kars roared as his whole body was sent ablaze.
All of a sudden everything stopped.
Y/n slowly uncovered her eyes only to see steam coming off Kars' body. His clothes were ripped and his hair was longer. She glanced in Joseph’s direction and she saw him move up his head.
She quietly scrambled off the platform and tip-toed towards Joseph and cupped his head in her palms.
“Joseph… are you alright?” she whispered almost inaudible to him. His vision was still a bit blurry but he could identify Y/n’s features.
“I think… I am. Where is Kars?” Joseph asked as he slowly sat up but he felt pain across his whole body.
“I didn’t think he was this strong…” Joseph groaned as he took a deep breath.
As Y/n was about to tell Joseph about what happened, Kars rose from the ground and touched the Red Stone of Aja that was still around his neck.
“So… This is what being a true Pillar Men feels like...” Kars whispered as he turned to look at Joseph and Y/n.
Joseph’s eyes filled with horror as he looked at Kars in disbelief. “What- What have you done to yourself?” Joseph breathed out shakily.
“I, Joseph, became the ultimate being! And all thanks to dear Ms. L/n.” Kars laughed as he started to walk towards them slowly. But all of a sudden the wall started to open.
But, it was a long time ago when the temple was in use and all of these sudden movements are making the temple start to shake even more.
The temple started to shake and small flakes and fragments from the ceiling started to fall on to the ground.
“We have to get out before everything collapses onto us!” Y/ exclaimed in worry as she grabbed Joseph's arms and ran away from Kars.
“You won't get away from me that easily, Ms. L/n!” Kars roared as he went to run after them but his new and much larger physique made him fall behind and as he was about to hit the ground he grabbed the two golden statues and since he didn’t know his full strength he tore them down on him.
The loud clash echoed around the chamber and Y/n and Joseph suddenly stopped.
They turned to look behind them and they saw Kars struggling to push away the two golden statues.
“Come on dear, leave him! If we don’t hurry, we’ll also be smashed by a stone!” Joseph exclaimed as he tugged Y/n to him but she tore her hand from his and ran to Kars.
She ran to Kars without being smashed by the falling ceiling and stopped near his head. “I- Gah- Why did you come back?!” Kars spat as he tried to lift up the statues off of him.
“I came back to help you! Just- SHUT UP WILL YOU?!” Y/n exclaimed as she tried to help him out. Kars’ eyes widened as he stopped pushing, “But WHY!? You have no gain from saving me!” he yelled in puzzlement.
Y/n’s heartbeat quickened as a rock fell next to her, “Come on, cooperate!” she yelled as she tried to push the heavy statue.
“I… I can’t- I don’t know why my powers don’t work!” Kars screamed as he tried to wrangle out. After a few moments he stopped again.
“You stupid human! Why are you trying to free me?! Don’t you see you will be crushed by the falling ceiling?!” Kars yelled out loudly.
Y/n exhaled and gripped her hands, “There- There has to be-”
“But there isn’t! You will die by your own stupidity! What are you waiting for?!” Kars argued. He managed to wrangle his arm out and took off his necklace and threw it at Y/n.
She caught it and with widened eyes she looked at Kars, “What- Why did you do this!?” she asked in surprise. Kars closed his eyes as he felt the heavy statues starting to crash his limbs.
“I- just take it and go!” Kars screamed and as Y/n went to argue a huge piece of stone fell on top of him.
“Oh- Oh my God-” Y/n whimpered as she saw blood spilling from beneath the statues.
Joseph had enough of her stupid antics and ran to her, "If this was his grave, I would've spited on it" he sneered as pride feeled his heart after saying that.
"Joseph there is no time for threats; he is dead! And if we don't run away we'll be too!" Yn exclaimed as parts of the ceiling started to collapse.
"Do not worry darling, I will use the Joestar family secret technique!" Joseph exclaimed with a smirk.
"What- AAH JOSEPH JOESTAR LET ME GO-" Y/n screamed as Joseph picked her up and started to sprint away through the tunnel and into the other chamber.
He ran to the water and jumped in, his hand strongly wrapped around her waist, holding her closer to him.
Once he arrived on the other side he grasped the rope and started to climb up the stone wall.
“WHAT KIND OF FAMILY SECRET TECHNIQUE WAS THAT!?” Y/n screamed as she held close to Joseph. The brunette adventurer laughed as they reached the top.
“I’ll explain it into more detail later, dear! Now hold tight!” he exclaimed as he climbed to the top of the pit.
The shaking didn’t stop and they had to get out quickly. Joseph spirited away and got out. “Look! My camera!” Y/n exclaimed as he pointed to the fallen camera and Joseph picked it up and gave it to her.
She put the necklace around her neck and gripped the camera.
“Is this all you have here!?” Joseph exclaimed as he looked around the collapsing temple. “No! I don’t! NOW RUN!” Y/n yelled and Joseph began to sprint out of the temple.
Once they left the temple they noticed it collapsing. Heavy smoke rose from the top as the stones fell on to the ground.
After some time of tireless running they arrived at the beach where Kar’s tent was. Joseph put Y/n down and held her down by her arms.
“You know dear, I would like to apologise for grabbing you like this-” “THERE IS NO TIME FOR THIS JOSEPH WE HAVE TO GO ON KARS' PLANE!" Y/n interrupted him as she looked around and surely she spotted a polished jet plane waiting.
Joseph grumbled as they began to run towards Kar’s plane and entered it. "Okay doll, this is my time to shine." Joseph smirked as he walked to the pilot cabin and strapped himself.
Y/n stumbled inside as the island continued to shake. "Joseph, I didn't know you knew how to fly a plane... I guess the rumours about you being able to do anything is really true." she said with a small smile as she sat down.
Joseph laughed, "I'm sorry to disappoint sweetheart, but I've never flown a plane in my life!".
"Oh really- WAIT WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY-" Y/n went to scream but she was thrown to the ground by the sudden force of the jet.
"JOSEPH FUCKING JOESTAR YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE US CRASH!" Y”n hollored as she held onto the seat from the floor of the plane.
"Do not worry! I have everything under my control! You can take a nap if you want!" Joseph laughed as he steadied the jet.
"Wzoom, wooom!" Joseph made some sound effects as he was pressing down the random buttons he found interesting.
How they didn't crash by now, only God will know.
Y/n grasped the camera in her hand as she felt nausea kick in from Joseph's God awful piloting.
After Joseph found a map and found where he needed to land he began to normally fly the plane.
After a few hours, Joseph noticed the same airpot that they took off from.
“My dear! We have arrived! Prepare for some turbulence!” Joseph exclaimed and Y/n nervously grasped her seat.
Once they landed, and by landed I mean Joseph almost crashed ten planes on the runway.
“I’m… I’m never flying a plane with you again, Joseph…” Y/n groaned as she felt the world around her spin.
“Oh come on dear I wasn’t that bad.” Joseph smirked but noticed her unsatisfied expression.
“Alright, alright I’ll work on it later- Wait- What are these markings!?” Joseph exclaimed as he rushed to Y/n and looked at her arms.
Y/n swallowed as she looked down, “These are the markings Kars made with the dagger…” she whispered in a quiet tone.
Joseph sighed, “Oh dear, come here…” he whispered as he tugged her closer. “I’m sorry I let him do this to you…” Joseph apologised and Y/n nodded.
“It’s alright, Joseph… Now let’s call Mr. Speedwago please…” she said as they both headed out of the plane and into the airport.
They got many weird starters for their dirty and bloodied attire.
As they finished their call with a distressed Speedwagon, they sat outside the airport. After ten minutes Speedwagon and his people arrived.
“Oh my God- What happened to you two!? And where is Kars!?” Speedwagon exclaimed a question after the question and Y/n and Joseph both went to explain everything as the paramedics cleaned them up.
“And this… This is the Red Stone of Aja that we were talking about…” Y/ said as she slowly took off the necklace.
Speedwagon marvelled at it and his eyes widened in wonder, “It’s like something out of this world… Have you perhaps saved some of the writings?” he asked the duo.
Y/n went to shake her head as she only had her camera with her, which she had already handed over, and her notebook was probably in a pile of ruins.
But all of a sudden, Joseph pulled out her notebook and handed it over to Speedwagon, “As Y/n was with Kars, I noticed her fallen notebook and I took it.” he laughed and Speedwagon smiled.
“You two have done so much for this expedition… I’m at a loss of words… And I think we have asked you everything we needed to for now.
Y/n’s chauffeur, Tony Castellano is waiting for you over there. Have a safe trip home you two.” Speedwagon said as he pointed to the shiny black limousine.
Joseph and Y/n walked to the limousine and entered it. Tony smirked as he saw Y/ and Joseph enter, “Wow! Who would’ve thought you two were gonna come back alive! Congrats!” he snickered as he started up the engine and started to drive in direction of Joseph’s apartment.
Both of them stayed quiet and Y/n slowly started to close her eyes, the lack of adrenaline finally catching up to her.
As they drove, Y/n’s head rolled onto Joseph’s shoulder and he gently wrapped his arm around her and brought her closer.
Joseph sighed as he kissed her forehead. “I could certainly get used to this…” he whispered as Tony continued to drive to his apartment building.
Once they arrived, Joseph thanked Tony and took Y/n out of the car gently, trying not to wake her up.
Tony drove off leaving Joseph and Y/n alone as he carried her to his apartment.
Once he entered he walked over to his bed and placed her on the right side. She will get dressed and freshed up in the morning. Joseph laid down next to her and looked outside the window.
The silver moon illuminated the room and the stars sparkled across the midnight sky.
Joseph’s eyelids became heavier and heavier and finally sleep caught onto him. He pulled Y/n closer to him and kissed her forehead once more.
“Good night, love… sleep well…” he softly whispered as he slowly fell asleep in the warm embrace…
The Temple of the Pillar Men, along with Kars, is now gone… Now, The only memory of them will be the treasured Red Stone of Aja…
