ATTENTION ALL VIRGINIA RESIDENTS!!
Your governor is currently trying to pass updated student model policies that mean, basically:
All schools must require a written consent form from parents in order to use a different name/pronouns for their child, and students currently using different names and pronouns will be forcibly outed to their parents.
As you can imagine, this is a Living Hell for all trans students. HOWEVER: YOU CAN HELP THEM!
There is currently a 3 day comment period ending TOMORROW AT NOON. email [email protected] with comments AGAINST the policy!
They’re also meeting on december 19 at 10am (get there early- around 8:30 so you get a seat) in the Pocahontas Buidling Senate Room A (900 East Main Street, Richmond)
There are anti-trans organizations going to the committee meeting as well, show up if at all possible so you can, to show power in numbers.
YOU CAN HELP TO KEEP TRANSGENDER STUDENTS SAFE! PLEASE REBLOG AND SHARE THIS POST AS MUCH AS YOU CAN!

Tufts University Resident Assistants (RAs) authorized a strike earlier this week in response to Tufts’ failure to make any offer for compensation in the form of a stipend. RAs at Tufts are currently only compensated with housing- they need to live on campus to do their jobs- but no stipend or wages during the semester or the three weeks of unpaid training they must attend in early august before other students are on campus. They also do not receive a meal plan.
Tufts recently sent an email communication to university students about Union activity on campus, failing to mention their bad faith attempt at bargaining over the past six months, and ending with a threat against potential strikers.
This portion of the email reads, “We anticipate everyone involved will respect our community values and one another’s right to enjoy the new semester without disruption. While we support the units’ engagement with our campus, any actions or activities that create a hostile campus environment, endanger public safety, or violate our Student Code of Conduct will be addressed by the appropriate members of our staff.”
This is a clear threat of conduct proceedings and potential expulsion against student workers who have a legally protected right to strike without retaliation. OPEIU local 153 is filing an unfair labor practices suit against Tufts University as a result of this threat and others from Tufts lawyers in bargaining meetings.
Support ULTRA, the Tufts RA Union, by signing this petition: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/tell-tufts-resident-assistants-deserve-pay/

Assistant Headteacher, Sheffield - Tes Jobs
This might be the maddest advert for a teacher I've ever seen.
But how have we reached the point where something like this is acceptable - for teachers or the students who are going to be sitting Saturday detention and contacted at all hours of the day?
Sometimes, it feels like education in this country has gone completely mad.

I think many students my age, especially in the west, don't realize what going to school actually means.
Yes, teachers treat us like shit, and are really entitled sometimes. The experience of going to school is hard, humiliating, very difficult to tolerate pressure-wise. And that is not ok. It is not good.
HOWEVER. It is not fair to think that just going to work instead is the solution. It is still vital that we keep going to school, clench our teeth, fight our way to graduation because otherwise we are fucked.
From the sixties up until i'd say the nineties, students were very politically active, trying to ensure their rights were respected, both as individuals, and as the collective group of students. Student's rights were one of the ways that people below eighteen could actually try to influence actively what concerned their lives.
This does not happen much anymore. The one thing i truly learned in school form the societal hierarchy point of view, was to keep my mouth shut as much as possible.
The effort that was put into making schools mandatory, so that lower class people could be at less of a disadvantage was insane. The hard work it took to get teens to go to school instead of working full time in factories or in the field is not something to forget. School is a right, and a hard earned right to be treasured.
And our government (italy), and i assume many others too, is trying to turn school into something made to churn out workers. They are exploiting our anxiety over not being able to make a living once we graduate, in order to get us to work instead of studying.
With the demographic change, the few young workers can no longer sustain the needs of the ageing population, but the government refuses to let immigrants in, because their whole voter base and popular support is based on the vestiges of fascism.
Young educated people flee the country like they are jumping into the water from the burning sinking ship that it is, choosing to work and study where they can actually get a chance at living a decent life.
All these factors contribute to a huge worker shortage, and the one way this country could think of as a remedy, was to get people into the mindset of finding a job as soon as possible. It's like entering the job market is the only important thing we are supposed to learn about in school.
They force us to participate in utterly useless unpaid internship programs, and it has happened before that students died on the job. There are so many activities that focus on what we want to do for work, not what we want to study or anything like that. And they just keep adding them. We had to endure conferences where the representatives of industries came to promote their corporate hell-scapes in order to convince us to stay and give up on anything else we want to do.
They are so fucking desperate and so fucking bad at appealing to us that it makes me both laugh and feel nauseous. Like wtf. WHY AM I MISSING FOUR HOURS OF PHYSICS TO HEAR A COP TRYING TO CONVINCE US TO BECOME COPS AS WELL. WHAT THE FUCK, PLEASE TEACH ME MAXWELL'S EQUATIONS INSTEAD YOU FUCKING COWARDS

Is it true that homeschooling in the U.S. is typically done for religious reasons, that's it's not regulated at all and that the children are at a disadvantage, or that they can be abused more easily? I hear about it but when looking it up all I see is stuff for COVID homeschooling reasons.
That it's typically for religious reasons? Not sure about that, especially depending on how one might define as "religious". Some people may talk about how the Christian g-d is their reasoning for pulling their kids out, but nothing they teach has anything to do with Christianity and more to do with conspiracy theories.
That it's not regulated? Unfortunately, this one is true. There are very few regulations, nobody's required to teach their children accurate information, or any information at all. There are a few regulations that basically make it so that the children/families aren't defying any compulsory education laws and the kids are accounted for, but each state is different in how this mandatory reporting works.
This is of course very dependent on what each state wants, but for the most part in the country there's very few defined rules. Here's a link that quickly goes over some of the legalities in homeschooling, and which states actually put effort towards educating children in the home.
That they are at a disadvantage? It can be true, yes, especially for the many parents who choose to "unschool" or otherwise remove schooling from their children entirely. While some have a much more structured approach on this, a lot of people have taken this to mean not even trying to educate their children. You can partly thank the internet for this, in my opinion, as it allows these types of knuckleheads to spread nonsense like that (think facebook mom type of groups).
There's also arguments made that homeschooling limits a child's social development, as they are around a lot less people and peers their age, and don't experience the typical interactions of the world.
This isn't always the case, however, as some homeschooling is done through actual programs offered by education experts, and classes kids can attend at their leisure. This allows them more socialization and to stay up to date, while also giving them the space and freedom to get what they need out of it.
So when it comes to disadvantages, it is heavily case by case.
That they are more likely to be abused? Well, it really depends on how you define abuse in this sense.
Of course, some people absolutely can and will argue that refusing to teach things like basic math or reading skills is abusive, or that forcing kids to believe your theories of the world is abusive, let alone that "withholding socialization" from them can be seen as abusive as well.
But some families abuse in ways that there are no gray areas about, such as families that intentionally leave their girls in the dark because they do not believe women have rights, or that use their older children to enforce punishment and be free babysitters under the guise of "homeschooling". These are pretty clearly abusive.
There was an uptick in abuse cases when children had to stay home as a result of the pandemic. The problem with these stats is that there are so many factors going into them that it's hard to say for certain any specific thing that makes the abuse more likely. Particularly big contributors include the stress of trying to juggle everything added with the fact that just being around someone more often increases the likelihood of abuse. These are two things that homeschooling can fall prey to.
So again, it's really a case-by-case thing.
The major problem is there isn't, and never was, a one-size-fits-all solution on education. That's why a lot of parents choose to homeschool - because their children are not succeeding in a formal public classroom as a result of needing something different than what is being presented to them. This is what a lot of parents with kids who have disabilities have to wrestle and contend with. In the same vein the lack of regulation of education can allow all the negative aspects to flourish. We see the same thing in public schools.
I'm not sure how things are run in other countries, maybe they have figured out something we haven't (which is very likely, considering the amount of things we are so far behind in).
But for the most part, what you've heard is true, it's just not always true for all homeschooled kids.

An actual serious post about a serious topic
(shocking, I know)
Ok, so, I’m a drama kid. This should surprise no one who knows me. I’m in drama class, some people say I'm a good actor, and I love Broadway. Now, fairly recently we watched Newsies in drama class. I expected to be completely bored and uninterested, but I absolutely loved it. Ever since then, I've been noticing more and more issues at my school (christian private school in the south, no other details shall be provided). From the Bible teacher enforcing the rule of “no shorts that don’t reach past your fingertips”, which I think is unreasonable in itself besides the misogynistic remarks, to the insane amount of homework we’re expected to complete each night (which is frequently blamed on my own procrastination when I have so many friends with the same problem). Just tonight, my best friend (who, unlike me, does not procrastinate) had a history essay, two math assignments, one English assignment, and, because it’s finals season, innumerable study guides.
It’s been proven in multiple studies that homework doesn’t improve student performance. It’s been proven that our current education system is actively worsening mental health. As stated in multiple popular posts about this topic, school barely gives us any time for anything outside of school, homework, and sleep. It’s actually managed to decrease the amount of sleep an average teen gets in a night. Our youth is being impaired by the thing that’s supposed to help it. Just think about how sad that is.
Having said that, something has to happen in the next few years. Our schools have been getting worse and worse ever since the 1900s. If we don’t do anything to fix it, things will continue to get worse. I’m talking peaceful protests, civil disobedience, and generally just any non-violent means of getting it through the Board of Education’s thick skulls that this is not going to cut it anymore. We’ve got to rise up. We’ve got to take a shot.
Please, please, please reblog this if you can.

Teaching as a Profession and Critical Race Theory
Chart #7, entitled “Most Teachers Say They Talk About Historical and Present-Day Racism, But Some Aren’t Sure if Systemic Racism Exists”, resonated with me as an ESL teacher. I was not surprised to hear that 23% of teachers do not believe in systemic racism, but I would be curious to know how this figure varies by student populations. I would imagine that teachers who primarily teach white students would be ignorant to the structural discrepancies that are often more apparent in diverse schools.
Virginia is one of the states that has banned critical race theory in schools, and this legislation affected the books that my co teachers and I chose for our novel study during the 2021-2022 school year.
I teach collaborative ESL English, so about 75% of the students in each of my classrooms are English Learners. The vast majority of my EL students come from Spanish-speaking households, so my co teachers and I incorporate books with Hispanic main characters into our curriculum. This past year, my co teachers and I considered teaching Efren Divided by Ernesto Cisneros as a read aloud. This book follows a Mexican-American boy who fights to support his family and get his mother home after she is deported to Mexico. When we began lesson planning for the book, we realized that the primary conflict is Efren vs. US Immigration Policy. Immigration officers are the antagonists in this story, and we did not feel confident that the county would support us if a parent complained about the book. Ultimately, we opted to read Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora, which discusses conflicts related to gentrification and heritage. The antagonist is personified as a cartoonish landlord rather than a political figure. Our novel study choice was greatly influenced by our concerns regarding parent reception.
Critical race theory ban threatens the professionalism of public educators by limiting teacher autonomy and the exercise of discretion. The professional code of ethics calls me to commit myself to encouraging positive development for my students by creating a classroom environment that helps diverse learners thrive. How does one connect curriculum to underserved populations in a meaningful way without touching antiracist themes?

Inspired by this post by @alex-just-vibing. PaliRev values the contribution of all people to the liberation of Palestine, and we encourage you to share this around your schools or with others to give accessible options for us all to show solidarity for the Palestinian people.
[image id: an image with a white background, bordered on the bottom left and top right with green, corner illustrations, an olive garden branch drawing on the bottom right, and a drawing of a boy sitting down with a backpack leaning on him, looking downwards sadly on the top right. there is a low opacity palestinian flag behind black text reading "HOW DO I SUPPORT PALESTINIAN RESISTANCE IF I CAN'T DONATE?" below this is a list in smaller black text, bulleted with light green arrows. the list reads:
"- Wear shirts, pins, keffiyehs, anything outwardly pro Palestine.
Email your Representatives, Congress, White House. Tell the people in charge you want a ceasefire.
Talk to your local library about holding an educational night about the genocide and/or Palestinian culture.
Make schoolwork about Palestine! Writing about news? Focus on Palestine. Making questions for a test? Use Palestine as an example.
Find social media accounts for your representatives and schools, and make a fuss. Comment and @ them!
Show up to local actions (i.e. protests), join and organization, and follow Palestinian journalists! (next line) - Motaz Azaiza, Plestia Alaqad, Hind Khoudary, Bisan Owda -
Educate yourself on anti-Palestine talking points (Palestine toolkit) and how to refute them in a calm manner.
Speak up! It's scary, but don't let other people's bigotry go unchecked. You'll find that other people agree, and speak up from your example.
Don't engage with people unwilling to learn. Your goal is to educate people who are and make those comfortable with genocide feel UNCOMFORTABLE."
below this in light grey text reads "@PALIREV.WEB". /end id.]

Students and Teachers are scared out of their own School Board under threat of N3o-N*z!
I am a high schooler from Hernando County Florida. There is a school board meeting that I, along with many of my peers and also teachers, was planning on attending to speak out and show our support for each other. If you are unfamiliar with what's happening in Florida, especially my county, right now, our governor has been putting unnecessary bans on our school curriculums and teachers. He is insistent that any minority or "woke idea" must be erased from our schools, specifically LGBTQ youth and POC youth. One of the members of our school board is besties with him and she is going on a rampage trying to erase rainbows, or anything else "woke". Her name is Shannon Rodriguez. She suspended a teacher for showing Disney's "Strange World" in her classroom on the pretense that it showed a gay character.
The meeting was originally going to be held at the school board office, but was moved to a school theatre to accommodate the larger expected audience. Myself and many other students had speeches planned but within the past three hours of this being written (currently its 1305), we have been told that Neo-N*z!s, and other conservative far right wing groups are going so far as to fly in from other states in order to attend. Their presence threatens my security/safety (as a white, female/straight appearing teen), my trans friend's, my Black friend's, and teacher's safety and security. So now many of us will not be there. Our county is a very Republican county, and the majority of those Republicans are extreme conservatives (guns, God, glory, Trump is my savior and my Jesus and my president, etc) and now children are not safe.
Please because Everyone needs to hear what we're facing here.
Here is the petition to remove Shannon: (actually written by one of my AP teachers)
Here is what I was going to say tonight
